The outbreak of war across Europe changed the tenor of every border she had crossed and every map she had drawn. Routes that had once served caravan trade became tracks of strategic interest; ancient wells now meant the difference between military success and disaster. Her notebooks, once primarily focused on inscriptions and strata, began to fill with entries of a different kind.
