- 0:00There is a considerable history within the religious and
- 0:04spiritual traditions of the world of the use of various
- 0:08forms of self-inflicted physical suffering to restrain the basic
- 0:13sexual impulse. Part of this arises through an
- 0:16attempt at disciplining the physical being to not stray from
- 0:20whatever the specific objective of the particular path happens
- 0:24to be. Another part arises through the
- 0:28dogma that sex is a sin and the body is born sinful and thus
- 0:34needs to be punished. Yet another part comes through
- 0:37the vital nature's desire for excitement, attention, and
- 0:41action. If it cannot get it through
- 0:43sexual activity, then it substitutes various forms of
- 0:47painful suppression as a sort of sadomasochistic alternative.
- 0:53And part of it comes through a sense of frustration at the
- 0:57inability of the mind and will to simply bring about compliance
- 1:02by the vital nature and the physical body.
- 1:06Whatever the reasoning behind adopting any of these methods,
- 1:10the reality is simply that they do not actually succeed.
- 1:15The result tends to be weakening of the body and the focusing of
- 1:19the attention on the suppression of the sex drive and the
- 1:22physical means being employed rather than on the aspiration,
- 1:27the tuning of the consciousness to the spiritual force and the
- 1:32strengthening and increasing the positive supportive action of
- 1:35the body, life and mind in the spiritual transformation.
- 1:40As we know, harsh suppression tends to increase the power of
- 1:45the force being suppressed so that in the end it can become
- 1:50even more aggressively powerful when it gets the opportunity to
- 1:54escape from the active conscious will that is suppressing it,
- 2:00Sriorobindo notes quote. Hurting the flesh is no remedy
- 2:05for the sex impulse, though it may be a temporary diversion.
- 2:10It is the vital, and mostly the vital physical that takes the
- 2:14sense perception as pleasure or otherwise.
- 2:18Reduction of diet has not usually a permanent effect.
- 2:22It may give a greater sense of physical or vital physical
- 2:25purity, lighten the system, and reduce certain kinds of tumus,
- 2:31but the sex impulse can very well accommodate itself to a
- 2:35reduced diet. It is not by physical means, but
- 2:39by a change in the consciousness that these things can be
- 2:44surmounted. End Quote Reference Sri
