0:03
[SPEAKER_00]: Money.
0:04
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not about the money.
0:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Money.
0:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Money.
0:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Except it is because that's what we're going to talk about today.
0:08
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
0:10
[SPEAKER_00]: Here we go.
0:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Hi everybody, welcome back to GoMortise with Tara and Haley.
0:22
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm Tara.
0:23
[SPEAKER_01]: This is Haley.
0:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, Haley.
0:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, Tara.
0:25
[SPEAKER_01]: We're here to talk about money.
0:26
[SPEAKER_01]: That's why Haley is wearing a green scarf.
0:28
[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
0:28
[SPEAKER_00]: I put it on and I was like, cash money.
0:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Green money.
0:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Della Della bills, yo.
0:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Meanwhile, I am wearing my Walt Disney World t-shirt.
0:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Also money.
0:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I spent money on this.
0:39
[SPEAKER_01]: So there you go.
0:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
0:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Look at us.
0:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, look at us.
0:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Look at us.
0:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Look at green.
0:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Cute.
0:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
0:45
[SPEAKER_00]: Pinko's good with green.
0:46
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
0:46
[SPEAKER_00]: It feels very summary.
0:47
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're sure.
0:49
[SPEAKER_00]: August.
0:50
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe we're in August.
0:52
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe it.
0:52
[SPEAKER_00]: There's summer really slipped away.
0:54
[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like an August by no means is the end of summer.
0:58
[SPEAKER_00]: It just feels like no.
1:00
[SPEAKER_00]: No.
1:00
[SPEAKER_00]: I had to slip a little August Taylor Swift reference in that.
1:03
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
1:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:05
[SPEAKER_01]: or I love August.
1:06
[SPEAKER_01]: You guys know what you've heard me talk about it.
1:08
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that August September October is like the perfect trio of really good run.
1:12
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a really good run.
1:13
[SPEAKER_01]: You get the end of summer.
1:14
[SPEAKER_01]: It can be a little hot, but you're starting to do you're kind of like basking in the end of summer.
1:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Then you transition into September, which is that like almost like a sunset, right?
1:22
[SPEAKER_00]: And then it's, you guys are not on YouTube, Tara just did a little like, you know, some jazz hand.
1:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And then you get October and October is just like crispy leaves and fall.
1:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And oh, I'm so excited.
1:37
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna know a really good fall.
1:39
[SPEAKER_00]: And I, I'm not a summer girl this year.
1:42
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm waiting for fall.
1:43
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm deeply positive people have said that.
1:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Can I be honest with you?
1:46
[SPEAKER_01]: I am a summer girl this year.
1:47
[SPEAKER_01]: It's really weird.
1:47
[SPEAKER_01]: I usually am not, but I've been asking in it.
1:49
[SPEAKER_01]: I think because I have the wedding scaries a little bit.
1:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's so fair.
1:53
[SPEAKER_00]: See, now that I'm scared to get married, I'm excited.
1:55
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just over that it's like the wedding is coming.
1:57
[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's not, it's not just the thing we talk about anymore.
2:01
[SPEAKER_00]: But we also have so much, I think, to look forward to this fall.
2:04
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm kind of like in that mindset of like summer's just like this, we're in between time.
2:09
[SPEAKER_00]: It's also being in Florida for the summer.
2:11
[SPEAKER_00]: The summer has been quite difficult.
2:13
[SPEAKER_00]: It's my return.
2:14
[SPEAKER_00]: It's 100 degrees outside most days.
2:16
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's really difficult to always raining every day.
2:19
[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like I'm waiting for that break in the weather to like have that fall, like have a real summer with this fall, you know what you totally.
2:28
[SPEAKER_00]: And also we have so much to look forward to.
2:30
[SPEAKER_00]: We have a really busy August.
2:32
[SPEAKER_00]: Some things we're still trying to work out.
2:34
[SPEAKER_00]: But we have a lot of trips between the two of us coming up.
2:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Not to mention our Kelly Bishop event that we are a part of in September.
2:42
[SPEAKER_00]: September 10th in rock center.
2:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Rock rock center.
2:45
[SPEAKER_00]: I always forget what it's called.
2:46
[SPEAKER_00]: Rockville Center New York.
2:48
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to moderate the event for Kelly Bishop's paperback release for the third Gilmore girl.
2:53
[SPEAKER_00]: I still can't believe it.
2:54
[SPEAKER_00]: That is insane.
2:56
[SPEAKER_00]: I realized after our little mini Kelly is what you're calling it.
3:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Little like the mini Kelly.
3:02
[SPEAKER_00]: The breaking news episode we did.
3:03
[SPEAKER_00]: I guess it was a couple weeks ago now.
3:06
[SPEAKER_00]: that the word that I was looking for that I don't actually think I ever landed on that I like thought about it to know last night was I'm just so grateful like I just have such gratitude for this moment in like gallery trusting us to have a conversation with Kelly on stage that people will listen to yeah so I cannot wait you can still get your tickets they're in the show notes
3:24
[SPEAKER_00]: We can probably, we're recording this a couple of weeks ago as of July 22nd, you can still get your tickets.
3:29
[SPEAKER_00]: So fingers crossed you can still on August 4th when this episode comes out.
3:33
[SPEAKER_01]: But oh, just so excited.
3:35
[SPEAKER_01]: This is going to be the best fall ever.
3:38
[SPEAKER_01]: That is what Danielle said to my best friend Danielle said to me this morning.
3:41
[SPEAKER_01]: We were talking and she was like, you're about to have like one of the best falls of your life.
3:45
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, it's going to be so high.
3:48
[SPEAKER_01]: I actually got like kind of emotional when she said that because we were of course talking about the Kelly event, but then also me getting married it was just like, we're so right.
3:55
[SPEAKER_01]: So many things on that.
3:57
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's so much to look forward to.
3:58
[SPEAKER_00]: I also feel very grateful.
4:00
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's why I'm kind of basking in summer is because like I'm excited for it to be here, but I don't want to rush it because it's gonna be such a, so busy.
4:08
[SPEAKER_01]: A couple of months.
4:09
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to savor it, you know?
4:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
4:11
[SPEAKER_00]: It's gonna be bus club, another club, like vibes this fall.
4:16
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I think it is taking a deep breath.
4:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Breathe in deep folks smells like summer smells like the best fall.
4:24
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's coming so save for the summer Exactly exactly so that's that's on the the horizon for us We've got a lot happening and we're very excited and then of course and the beginning of October will be in Ann Arbor first star's whole of Saturday
4:38
[SPEAKER_01]: And it also kind of spans over the whole weekend.
4:39
[SPEAKER_01]: We have a lot to look forward to.
4:40
[SPEAKER_01]: We've been doing this with Lisa and Lane for this is the third year we'll be doing it.
4:44
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm really excited to just continue the fun.
4:48
[SPEAKER_01]: We love our Ann Arbor Besties and we love seeing you guys.
4:50
[SPEAKER_01]: So be sure to get your tickets for a really, really excited.
4:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's just gonna be such fun time.
4:55
[SPEAKER_01]: It's gonna be so fun.
4:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, my mom's coming.
4:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's coming, it's coming, it's coming.
4:59
[SPEAKER_00]: And you're on the most excited for it, this is insane.
5:02
[SPEAKER_00]: But I found out that my favorite cherry preserves.
5:05
[SPEAKER_00]: There is a storefront across the street from rock paper scissors where Star's Holocenernese hosted.
5:13
[SPEAKER_00]: And when I found out that cherry a public was across the street, I was like, oh my God, it's over.
5:17
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm bringing them to suitcase and just come back to the jam.
5:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Each jam elixir.
5:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Just a suitcase full of jam.
5:24
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if it's my suitcase at TSA, and they're like, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
5:28
[SPEAKER_00]: Are you okay?
5:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Are you smuggling something?
5:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes jam for my cherries or herbs?
5:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, hello Oh, I'm excited And our burger, go my girls jam jam perfect time Anyway, I know there's a lot to look forward to on the horizon, but we are in the now we are savoring this moment and speaking of saving Let's talk about money
5:50
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, let's talk about money.
5:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
5:53
[SPEAKER_00]: Talk about the money, money.
5:55
[SPEAKER_01]: This was a lot of fun because we got to answer some of the questions in the question box.
5:58
[SPEAKER_01]: We posted on Instagram because money is such a hot topic on this show.
6:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Money drives this show forward in so many ways.
6:08
[SPEAKER_01]: It's basically a plot point.
6:09
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a funny, it's a theme.
6:11
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a core idea that Amy is working with here.
6:20
[SPEAKER_01]: it's true.
6:20
[SPEAKER_01]: And from the very beginning, because that seed is planted in the pilot, I mean, it's all about the money money money money.
6:27
[SPEAKER_01]: So a lot of you had a lot of questions about money or relationships that pertain to money.
6:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Storylines that pertain to finances.
6:34
[SPEAKER_01]: And so we thought that we would do a little episode.
6:37
[SPEAKER_01]: all about money and this is pretty general.
6:39
[SPEAKER_01]: There are a lot more specifics that I feel we could get into maybe a GTC or separate episode later on but we just wanted to talk about the general kind of questions that surround the Gilmore's finances, lower-life finances, Luke's finances and I thought that we would start with some financial basics from the year 2000 and before because of course this starts in fall of 2000 that's when we meet everybody but
7:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Some of the things that are pertinent to people's finances involve kind of what the financial landscape of Connecticut looked like in years before that.
7:15
[SPEAKER_01]: And the 80s and 90s, yeah.
7:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
7:17
[SPEAKER_01]: So to start the federal minimum wage in the year 2000 was $5.15 per hour.
7:22
[SPEAKER_01]: and that rate had been in effect since 1997.
7:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, Laura Life was not making minimum wage.
7:27
[SPEAKER_01]: She was already salored.
7:29
[SPEAKER_01]: But when she was making minimum wage, when she decided to go out on her own and go to the independence in and land on me as doorstep, that was in 1985.
7:39
[SPEAKER_01]: And the minimum wage in Connecticut was $3.37 per hour.
7:43
[SPEAKER_01]: and so you figured that that's kind of where she was starting and a lot of people were like if she worked as a maid for eight years before, you know, she'd worry we're able to buy that house it's like I don't think that's really what happened.
7:53
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that it started to grow and grow and evolve.
7:56
[SPEAKER_00]: I imagine Mia started her out minimum wage and then slowly she was making more.
8:03
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that for those eight years she was making that level of minimum wage.
8:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
8:07
[SPEAKER_00]: in relationship to like her first, her first role there at the independence in it probably expanded.
8:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, totally.
8:15
[SPEAKER_01]: So just starting there with the basis of where we were at in the year 2000 and where Laura life was at in 1985.
8:21
[SPEAKER_01]: We thought that it would be a fun idea to kind of talk about money in like almost like a treasure map kind of way of the money map.
8:28
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to start like where is the Laura house?
8:31
[SPEAKER_00]: It's giving Joel Mazzle exactly.
8:33
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a money treasure map.
8:35
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a money treasure map.
8:36
[SPEAKER_00]: We know what the money is.
8:37
[SPEAKER_00]: We know what we know.
8:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for the most part, we know what the money is.
8:39
[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to start with questions about Laura lie.
8:42
[SPEAKER_01]: and then kind of dabble into the Gilmore's because of course those kind of work in tandem with each other, pertinent to the storyline.
8:49
[SPEAKER_01]: And then we're also going to talk a little bit about Luke, which is also very financially connected to the lower levels.
8:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it's true.
8:57
[SPEAKER_01]: So, as I mentioned, the minimum wage in Connecticut was in 1985 was $3.37 per hour.
9:01
[SPEAKER_01]: So if she worked,
9:04
[SPEAKER_01]: 40 hours a week at that time, she was only making like $135 a week and subsequently about $7,000 a year.
9:10
[SPEAKER_01]: That is not a lot of money, but she was living in the shed outside of the independent sense, so she didn't have to be rent.
9:16
[SPEAKER_00]: That we know of.
9:17
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see a lot of people were wondering if they thought that Laura L.A. salary was going towards her room in board for living there.
9:26
[SPEAKER_00]: And my thought about that is, is if Mia is making her pay to live in a shed,
9:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think they live in a potting shed.
9:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the shed was for me.
9:36
[SPEAKER_01]: I think she said you need somewhere to stay.
9:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I've got a shed with that.
9:40
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not that she was losing money on a room.
9:43
[SPEAKER_00]: No.
9:44
[SPEAKER_00]: The way that Mia talks about like, Laura like coming up to her doorstep with this like bundle and her arms of like little baby.
9:50
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that she's going to look at her and be like, okay minimum wage and all of your wage court goes towards me to pay for the room.
9:57
[SPEAKER_00]: I think she's going to be like, you can live here.
9:59
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll pay you.
10:00
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that Laura, I probably saved like 99% of that.
10:05
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that she was like thrifting Roy's clothes.
10:08
[SPEAKER_01]: She was making Roy's clothes.
10:10
[SPEAKER_00]: She even talked to, yeah, that she made her like a Harvard onesy out of a t-shirt.
10:14
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think that most of what they were doing was probably, like, as Lori says in a family matter,
10:22
[SPEAKER_00]: when she's like, are you scrimping?
10:23
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's probably what her existence was at that time.
10:26
[SPEAKER_00]: She was probably scrimping, probably getting food from the kitchen, warriors, you know, younger.
10:31
[SPEAKER_00]: So there she's not feeding two full people, two full grown people.
10:36
[SPEAKER_00]: So I imagine that it was not super expensive for her, for her life.
10:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Totally.
10:41
[SPEAKER_01]: And we don't know when Mia decided to give her raise.
10:45
[SPEAKER_01]: I imagine that based on the way she speaks of her in,
10:48
[SPEAKER_01]: the ins and outs of ends when we meet Mia.
10:50
[SPEAKER_01]: She climbed to the ranks rather quickly in the sense that Mia saw a lot of potential in her and saw her work ethic and therefore I think that she probably got a lot of raises and promotions a lot faster.
11:06
[SPEAKER_01]: I think someone who maybe wasn't under the same circumstances and didn't have the same like scrappiness and grit and determination or like even like if someone
11:18
[SPEAKER_00]: and didn't want to expand beyond that, like, lowerly very clearly did.
11:21
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think a lot of it was out of need.
11:23
[SPEAKER_00]: That she felt, this is how little I make.
11:25
[SPEAKER_00]: If I work harder, I will rise in the ranks this in until I'm the manager, exactly.
11:31
[SPEAKER_01]: And based on like the limited information that we know, she did eventually, it sounds like, by the end of the century.
11:40
[SPEAKER_01]: By the end of, by the turn of the century.
11:42
[SPEAKER_00]: By the turn of the century.
11:43
[SPEAKER_01]: But I imagine that if she was maybe,
11:47
[SPEAKER_01]: climbing the ranks up to being the manager by like the mid-90s to the point that she was able to purchase a house because she had Lori moved into that house somewhere around 1995.
11:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because Lori was born in 1984 and Suki makes mentioned in concert to interrupt us about like you had an 11-year-old kid and you were just moving into this house.
12:08
[SPEAKER_01]: So we imagine around 1995 she bought the house, the liberalized house that we all know and love.
12:14
[SPEAKER_01]: And so maybe by that time
12:16
[SPEAKER_01]: If she was, like, say in the mid-90s, I don't know if she was maybe the executive manager yet, but she was a manager at the end.
12:23
[SPEAKER_01]: She might have been making somewhere around $35,000 a year, because in 1995, the US national average annual wage for all workers was about $27,000, but according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Connecticut had the highest pay level amongst the states in 1995, which was averaging at about $35,000 a year.
12:42
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that in those 10 years that she was at the end, she was very frugal and very much saving her money, because I think Celora-ly money means control, but when she has it, money means freedom.
12:55
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I think that the more that she accumulated adjustment that she in worry could have a more, a more free life than the one that she had left behind.
13:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Totally.
13:04
[SPEAKER_01]: And we have to remember that Connecticut does sit amongst like some of the wealth, like one of the wealthier states.
13:09
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that when we do a US national average, some of the flyover states that don't have as high a cost of living as it does on the coasts.
13:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Depending on where you're at, I didn't realize that is someone who lived in Connecticut.
13:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Never.
13:21
[SPEAKER_01]: I never knew that.
13:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it wasn't until also doing research for this set.
13:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, I have to remember that Connecticut's minimum wage was a little bit higher.
13:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
13:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Then the US federal minimum wage or the average.
13:31
[SPEAKER_01]: And so that did kind of work in lower life favor even if she was lower middle class.
13:35
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
13:36
[SPEAKER_01]: And so by the year 2000, it's likely that lower life is making closer to like $40,000 a year.
13:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Some of the research I did said maybe even $50,000 a year, which is a lot.
13:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Tourist attraction, which in the year 2000 was a good amount of money.
13:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they were definitely very middle class.
13:51
[SPEAKER_01]: And they talk about the independence in, you know, having people like Billy Joel stay there.
13:56
[SPEAKER_01]: And like when they open the Dragonfly Norma Mailer comes in, like people, they talk about celebrities coming in and out of this.
14:03
[SPEAKER_01]: and because Star's Hollow is a big tors to traction.
14:06
[SPEAKER_00]: And you also have to think of it in terms of the inspiration for it, which was the Mayflower Inn.
14:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
14:11
[SPEAKER_00]: And us having been to the Mayflower Inn, I know that it was renovated.
14:15
[SPEAKER_00]: So this was, I guess we were in there in 2024.
14:18
[SPEAKER_00]: So they had recently, 23, 2023.
14:20
[SPEAKER_00]: And they had recently renovated it.
14:22
[SPEAKER_00]: So it wasn't exactly what Amy Sherman Paladino was inspired by in the late 90s.
14:27
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's a very, it's an expensive place to stay.
14:30
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a cheap place to go for the weekend.
14:33
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm imagining that level of a customer coming and paying that much money to stay at the end.
14:40
[SPEAKER_00]: Which is why it's such a big deal that the Bracebridge dinner group just...
14:45
[SPEAKER_00]: we're like, okay, can't make it.
14:47
[SPEAKER_00]: That's it.
14:48
[SPEAKER_00]: I like, yeah, probably insane amount of money, but I'm that's what I imagine.
14:52
[SPEAKER_00]: I imagine a lot of people who are coming there are paying a rather expensive rate to stay there.
14:58
[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that that would reflect in the manager salary.
15:02
[SPEAKER_01]: So with that in mind, Laura Lies buying a house in 1995.
15:06
[SPEAKER_01]: And I tried to look up what a house like hers in a town like Washington
15:13
[SPEAKER_01]: It's interesting because the town of Washington Depot is actually like more affluent than some of the smaller towns like with Gilmore girls I think that stars hollow was intended to be yes a tourist attraction but like small town like more of like a rich field
15:29
[SPEAKER_01]: or maybe even a new millford where it's like apparently Washington Depot, it's like some of the houses in the late 90s and early 2000s based on my research, were a little more expensive than like the average home in Connecticut.
15:39
[SPEAKER_00]: You know who I should have asked, to a Susan Lee, do you remember?
15:43
[SPEAKER_00]: She bought like a weekend house in Connecticut in Washington Depot because of Gilmourne girls.
15:49
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
15:50
[SPEAKER_00]: I thought that's your body.
15:51
[SPEAKER_00]: But I like looked, and I remember when we were there, the people who we spoke to were talking about it like we were out in the boonies is what they kept saying.
15:58
[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, this is like a, this is a nice area of my friend.
16:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly, yeah, yeah, yeah, but I will say someone who lives in Connecticut and grew up in a very small town.
16:06
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're there, you don't, especially as a kid, like you don't.
16:10
[SPEAKER_01]: No, you don't know where you're at.
16:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like your in your bubble and you don't really understand I was like, oh, yeah, I just live in kind of this like small little town It wasn't until it was older and I had a better understanding of finances and money that I was like, oh Our town was actually like a little more on the wealthier side.
16:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't, but Countless the town was a good job town.
16:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Good job for you.
16:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Good job everybody but
16:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Based on the research that I did, the House at Lourlay had would have cost at the time between $150 and $200,000.
16:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what I found.
16:39
[SPEAKER_00]: There was a lot of references online to their house being $2.8 million.
16:45
[SPEAKER_00]: And first of all, I was like, uh, this is delusional, this isn't sane.
16:49
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a multi-million dollar home.
16:51
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a two-bedroom house with one maybe a surprise bathroom someplace else.
16:55
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a crime on the other side of the room.
16:57
[SPEAKER_00]: Like a closet bathroom combo.
16:59
[SPEAKER_00]: And I realized that a lot of that misunderstanding came from because I was like trying to like get people sources to like go back to like who was the first person that said this?
17:08
[SPEAKER_00]: And it was from like, I forget the exact website, but it was based on like TV shows, like how much it would cost to quote unquote like be their neighbor.
17:16
[SPEAKER_00]: And they were saying that her house cost that much because they thought that Amy Sherman Paladino based lower-rise house on the Mayflower Inn.
17:25
[SPEAKER_00]: And so they were basing that on how much the Mayflower Inwood cost to have purchased in the 2000s, or like in 90s.
17:33
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
17:34
[SPEAKER_00]: And so that was not the case.
17:35
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I was like, oh, I was like more of a Gilmargles expert.
17:38
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm recognizing that your facts are wrong here.
17:41
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
17:42
[SPEAKER_00]: In was based off not her house.
17:44
[SPEAKER_01]: But I will say that the house in like the original house that they shot the pilot in Ontario, Canada.
17:50
[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of for sale.
17:51
[SPEAKER_00]: You just want to for sale for $2.8 million.
17:54
[SPEAKER_00]: So when you set that, I was like, no, but that house is a lot bigger.
17:58
[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you look at it, like from like the actual house that they shot like the actual pilot in.
18:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the one in Unionville.
18:04
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that one is also bigger.
18:06
[SPEAKER_00]: The housing market now.
18:08
[SPEAKER_00]: So different, so different, but I thought maybe that was the just the oh, yeah, yeah, that's so interesting But yeah, it was because the Mayflower Inn is what they were basing it off of because they were misattributing the kind of like origin story of But yeah, I staying I was looking for two bedroom one bath Maybe like one and a half bath face yeah
18:31
[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, in the specifically in Connecticut, I was kind of like going back through the archives, trying to find houses, like listings, and it was anywhere from $100,000 to $200,000.
18:41
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I was guessing on the lower end of it, simply because I was like, this is stars hollow.
18:48
[SPEAKER_00]: Something's weird about this town, that like, I don't know, Laura Lies is going to get a discount somehow.
18:54
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, here's the thing, is that we have to kind of suspend our disbelief here in the world of stars hollow,
19:00
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a fictional TV show, and so we're trying to root this in reality, and I'm sure some of it was based on research, and I'm sure they were trying to be as accurate as possible, but also we really have to suspend or disbelief here.
19:12
[SPEAKER_01]: I know, I have this episode to really have to be like TV magic.
19:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you just have to remember that if you have a single mom living in a two-bedroom, one bathroom house, you guys are having very different lives in this TV show where this
19:27
[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
19:28
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a different.
19:29
[SPEAKER_00]: It's different.
19:29
[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
19:30
[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm also basing it like I'm brooding it in the year 2000.
19:33
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, or like this one, I like went back to the 90s.
19:35
[SPEAKER_00]: Like the early night when she would have bought her house and like more getting like a 20 to 30 year mortgage on this that she would have been paying like probably less than $1,300 a month which now would be over $2,500 a month for her mortgage.
19:50
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I imagine she did.
19:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Like either whether she put like a down payment on or she did a
19:55
[SPEAKER_00]: I was trying to look up like different types of mortgages, like zero down payment, like what that would be.
20:01
[SPEAKER_00]: And it kind of shook out that it would be around $1,300 a month.
20:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if she had safe safe safe.
20:07
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I found a lot of money while she wasn't paying rent at the Independence Inn for the potting shed.
20:12
[SPEAKER_01]: I imagine that she was able to put down about like 15,000 dollars.
20:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
20:15
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I thought.
20:16
[SPEAKER_00]: That there was a certain level of savings that she had had that was specifically for, like, I'm going to provide a house for me in this girl.
20:24
[SPEAKER_00]: Me and my best, yeah.
20:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
20:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry.
20:26
[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
20:26
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
20:27
[SPEAKER_00]: So I was like looking, I was like, trying to look up like mortgage rates in 1995, which I was like this,
20:33
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to deep.
20:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Just look it up.
20:35
[SPEAKER_00]: We've gotten it in the weeds.
20:36
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
21:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but something that we know for sure, and I will say that a lot of this is pulled from 2007 because of the season seven of it all when lower-rise car breaks down, but we know that she had a 1999 Jeep Wrangler.
21:14
[SPEAKER_00]: We think she had a 1999.
21:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think she bought her car new?
21:17
[SPEAKER_01]: But that's the thing is like,
21:20
[SPEAKER_01]: It is a 1999 Jeep Wrangler.
21:22
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, yes, I'm like that's that's another moment of like TV magic I feel like.
21:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, of like I don't think that Lord I brought bought a brand new car in 1999.
21:31
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm as she did.
21:32
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know what?
21:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, now that I'm looking it up, it's a possibility that it was in 1995.
21:37
[SPEAKER_00]: So she could have bought her car used.
21:39
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I thought.
21:40
[SPEAKER_00]: I thought she bought a used car.
21:41
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was always actually my, okay, some fan fiction that her down payment ended up being a lot less than she thought it was going to be.
21:49
[SPEAKER_00]: And so she was able to put some of her savings towards getting a new car for her.
21:53
[SPEAKER_00]: Totally, totally.
21:54
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm looking up Tangy Brangler's like 1995.
21:58
[SPEAKER_01]: 1996, like it's possible, but it looks like it's a 1999.
22:01
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and so that's so WB though.
22:05
[SPEAKER_01]: It is very WB.
22:07
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, no, that actually isn't who owns the car?
22:09
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, there is there is a person who owns the car
22:12
[SPEAKER_01]: There is, they do have it tan 1997.
22:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, well, this is 1997, 2006.
22:16
[SPEAKER_01]: So I actually don't know for sure.
22:19
[SPEAKER_01]: But let's say that she was able to buy it new and she financed it.
22:24
[SPEAKER_01]: It was it costs between 14,000 and 22,000 depending on the model you got.
22:29
[SPEAKER_01]: So she put 10% down, but $1,400 down on something and then like how to car payment.
22:34
[SPEAKER_01]: That is, that is an expense, but you know, she was like, listen, I need to get to and from work every day.
22:39
[SPEAKER_01]: She had that car for many, many years so much so that she didn't want to like go of it in 2007, which I definitely believe.
22:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I believe that would have been a good person.
22:46
[SPEAKER_00]: Even if it was season 7, you know, we'll touch them.
22:48
[SPEAKER_00]: OCD attachment to a car.
22:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it's also, you know, kind of thinking about secrets and loans, and when she ends up going to the first national bank with Emily and Mr. Regal's, is it Mr. Regal's?
23:01
[SPEAKER_00]: No.
23:01
[SPEAKER_00]: No.
23:02
[SPEAKER_00]: Mr. Gorkowski is the one who was like rejecting her over the phone, right?
23:06
[SPEAKER_00]: Regal's, Regal's ski.
23:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, did I say?
23:08
[SPEAKER_00]: Greg Alskie.
23:09
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh no, who that is.
23:10
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that's the sky.
23:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Who's Greg Alskie?
23:13
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm having such a hard time with names lately that just completely disconnected from my brain.
23:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Like two weeks ago on Marvelous Time, sorry, sorry to those men.
23:24
[SPEAKER_00]: I mixed up everyone's names all episode long.
23:28
[SPEAKER_00]: It was interesting.
23:29
[SPEAKER_00]: I found it for Ken to be.
23:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you were talking about Susie.
23:31
[SPEAKER_01]: We were talking about, so if you were talking about magic, I was like, who are you talking about?
23:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I had no point knew what was going on, and here it was coming out of my mouth, so yeah.
23:40
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what it seems like what's happening right now.
23:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so Mr. Grigowski and Emily I don't remember his name is something like Simon or something but either way Yeah, she has someone who can sit down with her and help um, you know co-sign with her for a loan and one of the things he says to her was like and you've taken two Loans out previously and I believe he says on this home and so it's like
24:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Does that have anything to do with mortgage?
24:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Did that have anything to do with repairs?
24:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Was this house a little bit of a fixer upper?
24:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe that's why it was a little cheap.
24:09
[SPEAKER_00]: That was my thought, too.
24:10
[SPEAKER_00]: Is that like she befriended Luke and Luke has always been around fixing the house?
24:16
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I imagine that it was on the cheaper end because it was a house at the end of the street that no one wanted.
24:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and Laura I was like, oh a house at no one once that one's mine
24:25
[SPEAKER_00]: that feels very little alive that me totally she paid less than expect like that I'm like writing like financial fan fiction for them that like financial fan fiction that like she ended up like spending last on the down payment for her house so she like put it toward a used cheap
24:42
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, you know, maybe she bought a second hand from someone directly exactly that's the thing is that like living in a small town and having the connections that they seem to in the year 2000 and being as beloved as the Gilmourkels were.
24:55
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
24:56
[SPEAKER_00]: And like, Laura, like, using her wiles, you know.
24:58
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a thing.
24:58
[SPEAKER_00]: She's not sleeping with anyone.
24:59
[SPEAKER_00]: She's not sleeping with anyone.
25:00
[SPEAKER_00]: She's not sleeping with anyone.
25:00
[SPEAKER_00]: She's not sleeping with anyone.
25:01
[SPEAKER_00]: She's not sleeping with anyone.
25:02
[SPEAKER_00]: She's not sleeping with anyone.
25:03
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like maybe they were able to get, like, to have some opportunities that came from a place of, like, love, help care from the town, rallying around them, yeah, things like you said secondhand, we're like, I know this prison, the dealership.
25:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
25:15
[SPEAKER_01]: It's actually selling a car connections.
25:17
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
25:18
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, they can vouch for her.
25:20
[SPEAKER_00]: or it's like not like she's a snake charmer or like a what is it snake oil salesman like it's just more that she I think is really endearing and charming and can talk to people in a certain way but also is beloved by the town in such a way that they're like oh this girl give her give her the good deal give her the good discount you know yeah totally agree so with all of this in mind the number one question from everyone in regards to Laura lie and
25:46
[SPEAKER_01]: is how can the girls afford to eat out all the time?
25:49
[SPEAKER_01]: And that is the question on everybody's minds.
25:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, how are they able to afford loops?
25:53
[SPEAKER_01]: How are they able to afford owls and pizza and all of this stuff?
25:56
[SPEAKER_01]: But what she says to Richard, in Richard and Stars Hollow, when he is like kind of shaming her for the list of Chinese food that she's about to order,
26:04
[SPEAKER_01]: and that it's wasteful, it's teaching her daughter wastefulness and gluttony.
26:08
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, get into the seven deadly sins.
26:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, she says to him, Dad, we do this all the time.
26:13
[SPEAKER_01]: We order way too much and then we eat like a third of it and live off the leftovers for a week and a half.
26:17
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a finely-honed system and I believe firmly.
26:21
[SPEAKER_01]: that this was a learned behavior at the end.
26:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that when they've grown in the past, yes.
26:28
[SPEAKER_01]: And so it's like, let's order a bunch of Chinese food.
26:31
[SPEAKER_01]: I do that sometimes.
26:32
[SPEAKER_01]: I pull a lure like Gilmore with my Chinese food.
26:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Email prep with their local Chinese restaurant.
26:36
[SPEAKER_01]: When I'm ordering in, I'm getting, you know, chicken and broccoli and rice, I'm not eating that whole thing.
26:41
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm saving half of it.
26:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Or like I did a little step.
26:44
[SPEAKER_00]: And then I have like a couple of, you know, lunch dinner.
26:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, lunch lunch.
26:49
[SPEAKER_01]: And my Chinese food costs like 10, 11 bucks.
26:52
[SPEAKER_01]: That's like what an order in New York City, which is one of the most expensive cities in the world.
26:57
[SPEAKER_01]: My Chinese food costs $10 for me to have chicken and broccoli over some rice.
27:02
[SPEAKER_01]: That's actually insane.
27:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
27:04
[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
27:05
[SPEAKER_01]: A good deal.
27:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Evergreen Chinese don't blow a Chinese spot.
27:08
[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
27:08
[SPEAKER_01]: It's offensive.
27:09
[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
27:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe I shouldn't talk about it.
27:10
[SPEAKER_01]: But I wanted to take a look at what Chinese food cost in the year 2000 in early 2000s.
27:17
[SPEAKER_01]: An egg roll ranged between 75 cents in a dollar 25.
27:20
[SPEAKER_01]: A wonton soup was like a dollar 25 $2 same with like any other any other soups.
27:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Chicken low-main was 525 to 650.
27:27
[SPEAKER_01]: These growlies are sharing everything and they're getting a bunch of stuff.
27:30
[SPEAKER_01]: That is so smart.
27:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Order a bunch of food.
27:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Save it.
27:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Put it in the fridge.
27:35
[SPEAKER_01]: You'll live off the leftovers for a week and a half.
27:37
[SPEAKER_01]: You probably should live off the leftovers for like three to five days.
27:40
[SPEAKER_00]: No, actually, it really should be up to three days and then you should throw it, depending on the item.
27:45
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, exactly.
27:46
[SPEAKER_00]: But like, like food safety.
27:47
[SPEAKER_01]: General sauce was like between like around 750, same with sesame chicken, sweetens our chicken to $6.50.
27:54
[SPEAKER_01]: and this is just an average it could have been cheaper in a small town in a local restaurant like Alice Pancake world, which isn't supposed to be selling Chinese food, so it's supposed to be like pancakes.
28:03
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow!
28:03
[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't really master pancakes.
28:05
[SPEAKER_00]: I also say one of the things that I love about there's the rub is in that episode at the end, Vory says August check, and it's because she wants to go up to the counter and talk to Luke and Jess.
28:18
[SPEAKER_00]: And Mr. Jess Marianne does something absolutely fantastic, and he tells us exactly how much their breakfast was.
28:24
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, he does.
28:25
[SPEAKER_00]: It was 1250, and like going back and looking at their table, it was also quite fun because Mr. Kirk, Glyson, was standing there hovering, waiting for their table.
28:35
[SPEAKER_00]: And you could kind of hear what he's talking about their breakfast.
28:37
[SPEAKER_00]: So they both, both of the two of them, they got full breakfast, like egg, toast, bacon, whatever.
28:42
[SPEAKER_00]: And so that was 1250 plus two, like two plates, plus two coffees was 1250.
28:47
[SPEAKER_00]: And I like did the inflation on that.
28:49
[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, that was like $25 for breakfast, which seems normal.
28:53
[SPEAKER_00]: Like that seems pretty standard for breakfast.
28:55
[SPEAKER_00]: but they're not going to lukes for full breakfast every day.
28:58
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes they stop in for a donut, a muffin, a coffee, yes.
29:02
[SPEAKER_00]: I do think that as like regulars like that and regular pains and lukes ass, that when they order a coffee and that's all they're getting, I think that lukes sometimes is just like,
29:15
[SPEAKER_00]: You can run out on this bill.
29:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he does sometimes say it's on the house.
29:19
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, so There's no, there's some times, but I think that when he fills him up a two-to-go cup and that's all they're getting his coffee I don't think he always charges them.
29:27
[SPEAKER_00]: I completely agree.
29:28
[SPEAKER_00]: I also think when they're getting refills I don't think he's charging them.
29:31
[SPEAKER_01]: No refills are so Luke special on lit the special was 425.
29:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah 425 that includes
29:39
[SPEAKER_00]: home fries toast like yeah so and also we have to remember that they've been tipping the proprietor which they were not supposed to be and so I wonder if Luke has this little stash of like tips the Gilmors have given me that they weren't supposed to and he was like okay they took a donut and two cups of coffee take it from the first stash totally but like you also have to remember that like it's not always going to work for the scene to see them pay
30:04
[SPEAKER_00]: That one it did, because you know what, we want to see Rory at the counter with Jess, with Loreline Dean standing on the street, looking through the window at them.
30:13
[SPEAKER_00]: But I would never lie.
30:14
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't.
30:16
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not always going to work for them to pay the bill.
30:18
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, it's not always working for the scene.
30:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes they're going to run out, you know, and we're not kind of seeing the transaction.
30:23
[SPEAKER_00]: But we have to assume that like, you know, for the most part they pay for their food.
30:27
[SPEAKER_00]: But there is a, a Luke's honor system that only applies to the government roles.
30:34
[SPEAKER_00]: crush on her.
30:36
[SPEAKER_00]: If your crush comes into your establishment, and you don't give them a free cup of coffee, what's the crush even worth?
30:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know.
30:43
[SPEAKER_01]: And here's the thing is we also have to remember that their main food groups are diner food, Chinese food, and pizza.
30:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Those are famously like some of the cheapest with the exception of fast food, which they also indulge in.
30:56
[SPEAKER_01]: That's some of the cheapest food.
30:57
[SPEAKER_01]: They're not fine dining ever.
30:59
[SPEAKER_01]: No, these are food.
31:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Day.
31:01
[SPEAKER_00]: No, if it's Luke's, we went to a Luke's that was quite nice.
31:04
[SPEAKER_00]: It was quite nice.
31:05
[SPEAKER_00]: It was quite nice.
31:06
[SPEAKER_00]: It was quite nice.
31:07
[SPEAKER_00]: It was a 425 for the special though.
31:08
[SPEAKER_00]: No.
31:09
[SPEAKER_00]: And we didn't get a cup of coffee.
31:10
[SPEAKER_00]: Let me tell you.
31:11
[SPEAKER_00]: No.
31:12
[SPEAKER_00]: But it was delightful if you were in the winter park area and you want to go to a Luke's for nice restaurants.
31:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Really nice.
31:17
[SPEAKER_00]: not this looks, you know, we're getting burgers, we're getting Cobb salad with, you know, if we could talk to Paul Newman, find out what was in his season dressing.
31:26
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
31:27
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, this is, this is, it's not cheap food, but I love diner food.
31:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's what love diner food.
31:33
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's part of why they put this out of diner is because these girls were not wealthy by any means.
31:38
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they have, they not to mention like their access to
31:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, then to privilege, but like specifically they did not have many dollars on hand in this regard So like they're eating cheap and I think yeah, that's probably a lot of why they said it out of diner like I was a diner agree.
31:54
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not like a French restaurant in the middle of town But we get that from Suki and so we also have to remember they're probably eating at the inn We're like probably eating lunch.
32:02
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean sometimes she leaves and she goes and he's lunch at Luke's I'm like girl.
32:05
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's let's bring out of this
32:07
[SPEAKER_00]: We're you're stealing time.
32:08
[SPEAKER_00]: We're a chef time.
32:09
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, tough.
32:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, tough and also you have a gourmet chef to chef is your best friend.
32:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a thing is that like food was already kind of bestowed upon them in a lot of ways between Friday night dinner and suki who will just whip something up for them No problem and their friends with the diner owner and a diner is already like $3 for stack of pancakes anyway
32:30
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
32:30
[SPEAKER_00]: And also, I bet, like, once Suki, I forget Suki was at the inn.
32:35
[SPEAKER_00]: How long did she been there since Lorela had been there?
32:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Because she, I forget the exact amount of time.
32:40
[SPEAKER_00]: But Suki and her became fast friends.
32:43
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I imagined Suki took a liking to Lorela and Rory and would make them things.
32:49
[SPEAKER_00]: So, like, I imagine that contributed to Lorela's savings as well because Suki was making them food.
32:54
[SPEAKER_00]: And she came in the time, yeah, she was a single income single gal living alone.
33:00
[SPEAKER_00]: It seemed like so I imagine she took a liking to the maid and or whatever job she had at that point and her young daughter.
33:08
[SPEAKER_01]: And then like to bring this home when it comes to food and how the affordability of food pizza.
33:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Pizza was like $10 for a large pizza.
33:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, put it in the freezer, put it in the fridge.
33:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
33:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Cold pizza.
33:19
[SPEAKER_01]: They love cold pizza.
33:20
[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
33:21
[SPEAKER_01]: It's another food group, you know.
33:23
[SPEAKER_00]: In terms of food, they also don't spend much on groceries.
33:26
[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you think about going to the grocery store and trying to budget, they're really eating out and then candy and cookies at home.
33:33
[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
33:34
[SPEAKER_00]: It's really just supplementally.
33:36
[SPEAKER_00]: So,
33:36
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, a suspended disbelief when it comes to their income, but also when it comes to their eating habits, a lot of people like to comment on the fact that these are very thin women, I need food that would otherwise like maybe make them put on weight, yeah, maybe make them a little unhealthy.
33:51
[SPEAKER_00]: So we kind of make their tummies hurt, make our tummies hurt, they eat so much sugar tear and I had such sugar hangovers after we were in Disney World, like we were like kind of, I felt like actually hungover, like I had like consumed
34:03
[SPEAKER_00]: like mass amounts of alcohol that they like day after like a true hungover, a true hungover, a true hangover until like the amount of sugar that these girls eat, how their tummies don't hurt all the time.
34:14
[SPEAKER_00]: I know, I don't know.
34:15
[SPEAKER_00]: So we just have to suspend our disbelief in a lot of ways.
34:18
[SPEAKER_01]: But on the topic of food, let's talk about Luke because there were a lot of questions about Luke and his finances.
34:25
[SPEAKER_01]: And I actually kind of walked away with more questions than I did answers.
34:28
[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, something that we have to remember is that Luke's was originally William's hardware.
34:33
[SPEAKER_01]: He inherited this store from his dad.
34:37
[SPEAKER_01]: So when it comes to the actual purchase of this building, I think his dad already owned this building.
34:42
[SPEAKER_01]: He was the apartment upstairs.
34:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
34:48
[SPEAKER_01]: And so he'd really just had to turn it into a diner, which is not cheap.
34:53
[SPEAKER_01]: But I wonder if there was an amount of money that had been left to him when his dad passed when his mom passed that allowed him the space and opportunity plus in season five.
35:02
[SPEAKER_01]: We kind of get this weird backstory thrown in that buddy and maizey helped him turn it into a diner.
35:08
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the owners of skippies.
35:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
35:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I was really taking the investment level of that out of the equation and it's funny I actually found in New York Times article from July 2nd 2000 title business heaping Helpingz of nostalgia a child's plate of profit and it was talking about how there's This like annual I could tell if they call it a conference, but I couldn't tell if it was like a festival It's called diner Rama
35:36
[SPEAKER_01]: And so there was this, they interviewed this man named Bob Arena.
35:40
[SPEAKER_01]: He was a 61-year-old New Englander, who has run his, his diner called the C-plane diner in New England for the past 25 years.
35:49
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I thought it would give us kind of a nice reality check on in the year 2000, what he was making because he makes mention of it.
35:56
[SPEAKER_01]: He said, it took a decade of 90 hour weeks before he began bringing home the 35,000 to 40,000 he makes in a good year.
36:04
[SPEAKER_01]: And I found that to be really interesting because in all of my Googling it sounded like a diner owner in like the early 2000s in Connecticut would have made closer to like meeting him as a person not his business what he takes home after it would make closer to like 50 or 60 thousand dollars a year as a business owner.
36:21
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's the context of it's important like did he pay rent?
36:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Did my own miss building because he bought the building for this man, Mr.
36:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Arena.
36:30
[SPEAKER_01]: He bought the building for $95,000 back in 1975.
36:33
[SPEAKER_00]: Shit.
36:34
[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
36:35
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
36:35
[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
36:36
[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy.
36:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
36:37
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that in this regard, it's probably like a situation, like as you were talking about like at the financial fanfiction of Luke's family, that I bet he was wild William's hardware.
36:49
[SPEAKER_00]: And there was also a sum of money that his father had.
36:52
[SPEAKER_00]: That was split between him and Liz.
36:55
[SPEAKER_00]: And I have to think that that's probably why Liz left.
36:58
[SPEAKER_00]: Liz got money from her father's will and bounced and used it.
37:02
[SPEAKER_00]: I bet that Luke probably used that to turn into a diner.
37:05
[SPEAKER_00]: So like I'm not saying that he had tons of money as a result of it, but I think that he's probably starting it more of like a net zero than a net negative in terms of like being in debt to purchasing a building, which we get into in a minute.
37:21
[SPEAKER_00]: talk about purchasing a building, but I think that he probably owned that owned the apartment, had no living expenses, or the same shirt every other day, buys his socks in bulk.
37:31
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, someone who's buying their socks in bulk, you know, like either they're really wealthy or they have or they are like, not.
37:38
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's the range of that is quite, quite frightening.
37:43
[SPEAKER_01]: 100% and I do think that.
37:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Luke and Laurel, I share in this kind of scarcity mindset, and that he also believes that like money is freedom, less from the purview of escaping a kind of a family where Laurel, I felt very bogged down by the control that money offered her, but I think that with Luke, it meant like, I have financial freedom to like be my own boss.
38:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
38:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's to do something I really
38:14
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, fully of the month.
38:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Employee of this.
38:16
[SPEAKER_00]: We agree.
38:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
38:19
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that like similarly to how Laura lives been able to live and operate, though she's been like raising another human being, which Luke does not have to do, up until just comes into town for a brief moment.
38:32
[SPEAKER_01]: And he really just buys him a box of cereal.
38:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
38:35
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that Luke had a lot of expenses built in for him.
38:38
[SPEAKER_01]: He runs an establishment that has food.
38:40
[SPEAKER_01]: So he already can
38:42
[SPEAKER_01]: eat via his business.
38:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, isn't it, Laura, when she's upstairs and she's like, wait, this is the stuff away from the diner.
38:48
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
38:49
[SPEAKER_00]: And so he's just like taking from his own business.
38:51
[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, he's not like, I imagine the place was furnished exactly how his dad had it and like again.
38:56
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think that there's like a frugal nature to someone with a lot of money that maybe used to not have a lot of money, so like him buying, like I imagine he's a frequenter of Costco.
39:05
[SPEAKER_00]: He buys a couple of flannel shirts, a couple of undershirts, and he does
39:11
[SPEAKER_00]: he buys his socks in bulk, and I think that that really is just probably a mindset of like he doesn't need much, he doesn't like much, and so he ends up with a lot of money as a result, because yeah, what is what is loop by?
39:25
[SPEAKER_00]: He has a boat that he's been fixing up, but like,
39:29
[SPEAKER_00]: But it was a shit boat.
39:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, he goes fishing.
39:32
[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't really do a lot.
39:34
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's something that he also, yes, he works.
39:38
[SPEAKER_01]: And something he also has that Laura, I think, has as well is that he has a very sturdy relationship with the town.
39:44
[SPEAKER_01]: They have known him for a very long time.
39:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, up here.
39:47
[SPEAKER_01]: And so when he says to Kirk in the episode where they're going back and forth about the toast and subsequently, the toy come house, he says like, I'm star, star's hollow banks oldest customer and Kirk is like, well, I'm star's hollow banks biggest customer.
40:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was like,
40:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but it seems that Luke has a really, really steady and sturdy relationship with that entity and the bank is a pretty, that's one you're going to want to have a really good relationship way.
40:16
[SPEAKER_00]: And he wears callers Luke never gets dressed up, but he gets dressed up to the bank because he respects the bank.
40:22
[SPEAKER_01]: which is interesting for him.
40:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
40:24
[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I genuinely think that so much of him, like his business started at zero, like he inherited this, which is to be said, like for like a lot of the situations financially in the show, that there is a lot of...
40:38
[SPEAKER_00]: proximity to privilege and proximity to wealth, which yes, they don't necessarily address they address it in a very like two thousand's way where it's kind of like Laura like pulled herself up from her bootstraps, but she was never that far from falling down.
40:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Like she could go to her parents, she could access them.
40:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And the same way that Luke we imagine got left this business that like he's not having to like in diner Rama,
41:04
[SPEAKER_00]: see what it was called, the C, the C plane diner, the C plane diner that like he had to see something like that out and like invest in it where his loop was maybe left this and like had him, you know, a step up above what someone might have had if they were starting from scratch.
41:23
[SPEAKER_00]: But Luke is also, I think, Luke and Laura live in that same place of being fruitful, about certain things, and Luke is not screaming well.
41:30
[SPEAKER_00]: He's been wearing the same baseball hat.
41:32
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, to be fair, that was from Laura.
41:33
[SPEAKER_00]: I saw, of course, he's going to wear it's his crush, of course.
41:36
[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I think the only thing that could potentially crush his business is giving the Gilmar Gold's food for free.
41:40
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the amount of money that he could have made off those girls.
41:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but do you think that Luke invests?
41:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think that he's investing because he does in season two lost in found out in a fit of rage by his a building?
41:55
[SPEAKER_01]: I just spent $100,000 and it's all your fault.
42:00
[SPEAKER_01]: More like goes to him for money and the incredible sinking war lie.
42:03
[SPEAKER_00]: She's going to ask him much to that scene and she's like, I was going to ask you for $30,000 and he goes $30,000.
42:09
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
42:10
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, right.
42:11
[SPEAKER_01]: He gives it to her.
42:13
[SPEAKER_00]: He gives it.
42:13
[SPEAKER_00]: He slides it across the, I love that scene so much because he just slides it across.
42:18
[SPEAKER_00]: She's like, what is this?
42:20
[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like open it later.
42:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, she opens it.
42:22
[SPEAKER_00]: And then the slide back and forth the terms on that little napkin.
42:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but it seems like he doesn't care.
42:27
[SPEAKER_00]: No, like he doesn't, but I imagine, at least for me, if he's investing in that, that's the extent of his investing.
42:34
[SPEAKER_00]: He's not going out of his way to invest in things.
42:37
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
42:38
[SPEAKER_00]: He's, or he has like a high yield savings account.
42:41
[SPEAKER_00]: He definitely has a high yield savings account.
42:43
[SPEAKER_00]: And I also think that he has a lot saved.
42:47
[SPEAKER_00]: he's not buying anything so like anything I think that he is making from the diner other than his like you know annual Costco trip to get his clothes like I think that he is just all unsafe and so more for me the question is in terms of Luke's finances is how loreline knows that she could ask him for $30,000 because like personally no offense if I needed $30,000 I wouldn't come in mine in dine you for it you know what he mean it's like I don't think that
43:16
[SPEAKER_01]: you know, thank you for for knowing that.
43:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah and so that's like my question is like that's like a close personal friend of hers that she's like okay let's ask Luke and I know that he had offered it sort of in secret in loans he did that he was like I could give you the money or like I could pay these guys and then like we could pay them back like
43:38
[SPEAKER_00]: He was exactly around the way and so she knew that he had money to offer.
43:42
[SPEAKER_00]: But I just think that going to your friend and being like, I need to borrow 30,000 dollars.
43:46
[SPEAKER_00]: You have to know they have that much money.
43:49
[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
43:49
[SPEAKER_00]: Like a surplus of that.
43:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
43:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Like at least double that because like I'm going to know I have your savings to do this.
43:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Totally.
43:55
[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
43:56
[SPEAKER_01]: It's it's interesting and I don't know if any of you would home have an idea of like how she would know that outside of secrets and loads of
44:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Let us know.
44:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Let us know.
44:05
[SPEAKER_01]: But speaking of borrowing money, let's talk about the Gilmourer's because that was outside of the of Laura Lyon worry and how they're able to afford their lifestyle.
44:15
[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of the questions we had were about Emily and Richard and they're the weapons one says.
44:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Mane characters.
44:22
[SPEAKER_00]: I was about to say what the money really show.
44:23
[SPEAKER_01]: But right, our money really stems from the relationship that they have with Laura Ly and the gap between them and why it is so hard for Laura Ly to have a relationship
44:34
[SPEAKER_01]: of their wealth and what they do with that wealth and how much that means to them having a place in society and their societal standing doot in proximity to their wealth.
44:45
[SPEAKER_01]: So how much money to the Gilmore's really have was one of the biggest questions.
44:50
[SPEAKER_01]: And to put it into perspective, what we've learned about Richard and Kilney now, when he's golfing with warriors, he says, I am the executive vice president of the German Driscoll Insurance Corporation.
44:59
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a very big company, one of the largest in the United States, and then he says that he oversees the International Division.
45:05
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
45:06
[SPEAKER_01]: My research offered a range of income for him, but likely a base salary for someone with his title would be between $500,000 and a million dollars.
45:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
45:16
[SPEAKER_01]: In the year 2000, and that is base salary.
45:20
[SPEAKER_01]: That is before bonuses, stocks that they also kind of give you in when they when they make you an offer, that puts them closer to an annual income of $3,650,000 and $222 million
45:35
[SPEAKER_00]: I have to, like, that was my guess.
45:36
[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, if he's not making a million dollars, it's like just a couple hundred shy that like annually, he is pulling in a lot of money.
45:45
[SPEAKER_00]: That that's just the way of it.
45:47
[SPEAKER_01]: And according to the New York Times in the year 2000, it was the peak of corporate options age as they call it.
45:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Executive compensation packages were heavily weighted towards equity, meaning that these executive vice presidents, their actual earnings could multiply significantly depending on the company's stock performance.
46:04
[SPEAKER_01]: that feels very much in line with Richard Gilmore.
46:07
[SPEAKER_01]: So even if his base salary is at the low end $500,000 a year, which is insane, it's multiplying 10 fold because of the stock options that are available to him.
46:18
[SPEAKER_00]: But I will say, and that is a lot of money.
46:21
[SPEAKER_00]: That truly is a lot of money, even then.
46:22
[SPEAKER_00]: But the way that they live their life is not it feels way, like they have way more money than that.
46:28
[SPEAKER_00]: Like thinking about their mates, like the company that they work for, the amount of money that they put just specifically towards that aspect of their life, feels like they make a lot more.
46:37
[SPEAKER_00]: But I really do think that it's just because between Emily and Richard, they both come from a significant generational wealth.
46:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's a thing.
46:49
[SPEAKER_01]: We have to remember that at least Richard, because we don't really know a lot about Emily's background, but at least Richard and we're going to talk about a little bit more of that next week, but Richard came from a hardworking but well-off family.
47:01
[SPEAKER_01]: You were a young man, your father was a young man, like you don't just go to Yale, maybe in like the mid-century, like the mid-20th century, it was a little bit easier and more based on merit, but like you have to have some sort of
47:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, now it looks like a nail is need blind, so it's like, whether or not you can afford it, it's not dependent on any acceptance, but it's also like access to education, access to those like connections totally land there, but based on grants, presents, yeah, and like everything she has to say, they have a significant amount of money because she had to marry already as a trust fund.
47:38
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, she had to bill Richard out in his studies exactly.
47:42
[SPEAKER_00]: So, there's a lot of money there, and the reason that Emily, like in my mind, at least has a lot of money is because for her 21st birthday she wanted invitations trimmed in real pearls and her mom found them and got them for her.
47:55
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I know.
47:56
[SPEAKER_00]: That's giving...
47:57
[SPEAKER_00]: I just haven't visioned that all.
47:59
[SPEAKER_01]: And I want to talk about it next week.
48:01
[SPEAKER_01]: But I just haven't visioned that all the time.
48:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Personally, I have a little vision that, like, I don't know.
48:06
[SPEAKER_01]: There's part of me that doesn't think Emily would go more with lie.
48:09
[SPEAKER_01]: But there's also a part of me that's like, that's like, wait, let's save that for next week.
48:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
48:15
[SPEAKER_01]: I need to, you just opened so many doors in my brain and I want to shut the wall really fast.
48:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
48:20
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
48:21
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about it next week.
48:22
[SPEAKER_01]: But that does back the question of like, what were the Gilmore's worth?
48:26
[SPEAKER_01]: And based on all of my research, I would say somewhere in like the tens of millions, like $10,000,000,000,000 dollars, like net worth.
48:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
48:34
[SPEAKER_01]: And that also then leads us to another question people had, which is the comment that sheira makes in season six about like, well, there's your money and then there's our money.
48:44
[SPEAKER_01]: And it had me thinking about the great Gatsby and how like old money versus new money was such a theme in that book.
48:50
[SPEAKER_00]: And I remember reading that too.
48:52
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's here.
48:52
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
48:53
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that Richard and even though like he comes from like a seemingly well off family based on
49:02
[SPEAKER_01]: They came from like a very hard working, like yes, we're Gilmore's, there is a name attached to that, but like we work hard for our money.
49:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Whereas the Huntsburgers seem to come from this like old money standpoint where it's like January.
49:15
[SPEAKER_01]: I had to see other way.
49:16
[SPEAKER_00]: My thought, I genuinely thought that Gilmore's were old money and that they had money that existed, but the Huntsburgers, who I imagine also had some old money to their name,
49:27
[SPEAKER_00]: just given like the the grandfather and like the statue of their house.
49:32
[SPEAKER_00]: But like I'm seeing him more of like a media mogul like that he's pulling in millions like if not approaching billionaire status like Being like owning media companies and now that like I think they have so much money now that like they fit into the circles that they fit into
49:51
[SPEAKER_00]: because of like the wealth of, like maybe even like a great-grandfather to Logan, like I think that maybe that's as far back as it goes.
50:00
[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that I think that Hound Spirgrers actually have a lot of 20th century money and like that came from like newspapers, media, and they slowly built their fortune that way or rather, they quickly built their fortune that way, whereas the Gilmournos came over on the Mayflower.
50:16
[SPEAKER_00]: So,
50:17
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that they actually have real old money that like runs deep, whereas the huntsburgers may be have newer money, but it is, it's runs deeper in the sense that the zero skit longer.
50:29
[SPEAKER_00]: So I actually think that the huntsburgers are newer money.
50:33
[SPEAKER_00]: And just stay.
50:33
[SPEAKER_01]: That's where Smith Scheer is.
50:35
[SPEAKER_00]: I guess maybe insecurities come from is that like there's your money and then there's our money, our money, there's more of it.
50:41
[SPEAKER_00]: and like her money might be less of it, but it might mean more in circles because the name might mean more.
50:47
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't know, like, history of the Hunsburgers, because they don't give us like a ton of that.
50:52
[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's like, you should read great, big, beautiful life because like, I'm getting like, Ives family from the Hunsburgers.
51:01
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
51:02
[SPEAKER_00]: It would if you read that, because like, she comes, she's like kind of a socialite that came from a media dynasty, if you will, that's kind of like, because that's the dynastic plan, is what?
51:10
[SPEAKER_00]: Logan says, so I imagine they have like a media empire and media dynasty, right?
51:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Sort of, yeah, I didn't think of it that way.
51:19
[SPEAKER_01]: I thought that there was like this legacy and the snobbishness that came from the side of the Hunsburgers that had more to do with like,
51:27
[SPEAKER_01]: how far it dates back, but yeah, maybe that truly is.
51:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there are many things we're turn of the century in the sense of, in terms of, like, we have because of hundreds, especially because of what Mitcham does, he's a newspaper mogul.
51:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
51:43
[SPEAKER_00]: And so, like, we know that Logan's grandfather went to Yale.
51:48
[SPEAKER_00]: And so, I think that maybe it goes back, maybe it was, like, his grandfather's father or his grandfather's grandfather, but like, I don't think it goes back as far
51:57
[SPEAKER_00]: the colonial days.
51:59
[SPEAKER_00]: The first to write, like, first to write into the US.
52:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Interesting.
52:02
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm curious with the besties thing if they know so we're under that impression, because I really did think that hard about it until we were doing this episode.
52:08
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I was like, oh, I wonder where like that old money new money in line is for the Hansburgers versus the Gilmore is it's very interesting.
52:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Very interesting.
52:16
[SPEAKER_00]: And like if you go either way, you know, we could argue that for the Hansburgers that it goes way back.
52:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's true.
52:21
[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm speaking of Logan.
52:22
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's backtrack through Yale, back to Chilton, back to the origin of the show itself, to asking for money.
52:31
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, you need money, you need money.
52:32
[SPEAKER_00]: And someone mentioned like, do you think that Lorelei was asking them for money frequently?
52:37
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think so.
52:37
[SPEAKER_00]: No, I think this was the first time she'd come to them, but they saw it in her eyes.
52:42
[SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to come here.
52:43
[SPEAKER_00]: And let's see, you need something unreasonable for us.
52:45
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that you feel.
52:47
[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that that was the first instance.
52:50
[SPEAKER_00]: And looking up different prep schools in Connecticut and what their tuition were.
52:54
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, or what their tuition was in the year 2000.
52:57
[SPEAKER_00]: I found anywhere between 17 to $22,000 a year for us today.
53:04
[SPEAKER_01]: school because there's a boarding school.
53:06
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, but they also have a school.
53:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
53:08
[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that it's completely accurate that when Richard gives Laura lie to $75,000 that she decides not to spend on Jimmy choose, but instead decides to pay back the loan.
53:20
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that that's a very reasonable amount to offer for three years of children based on everything I looked up because a lot of people were like, why didn't they just pay for the first year and the lower life finance at the rest of it?
53:31
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's because it's just the idea of money is controlled to money's evil from the Gilmourers.
53:37
[SPEAKER_00]: And so in that regard, it was a way to get their claws in as low as I feel.
53:43
[SPEAKER_01]: But also it was for Laura like it was kind of this like all right, I have to be here But you know what this is gonna make my life a lot easier because when they say when she says in the pilot like that's a lot of zeroes behind that five I think I always thought it was like fifty thousand dollars.
54:01
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was five thousand dollars to if you think about it being on the higher end like somewhere between fifteen and twenty thousand dollars.
54:08
[SPEAKER_01]: That's twenty five percent down that feels like
54:12
[SPEAKER_01]: and what she would have to pay to get started.
54:14
[SPEAKER_01]: And at the time, Laura didn't have that to spare.
54:16
[SPEAKER_01]: And if she did, it would have wiped her out.
54:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
54:19
[SPEAKER_01]: And so she's thinking to herself, if I have to make every quarter this payment of $5,000, it's like, it's a small price to pay to have my parents by me and it's big.
54:27
[SPEAKER_01]: It's big deal to her.
54:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
54:28
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's like having her parents pay it, financing that would still mean somewhere along the line, children was going to expect her to pay $5,000 a quarter that she did not
54:39
[SPEAKER_01]: And so, but a lot of people were like, did she not look up how much it cost before she had her daughter apply?
54:44
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was very much like a, we're gonna apply and then like, we'll figure it out for a couple of years.
54:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Laura Lye has always been able to figure it out clearly based on everything we talked about today.
54:54
[SPEAKER_01]: So, I think that that is what the number, like I think it was $5,000.
54:58
[SPEAKER_01]: That's a lot of zeros behind that five.
55:01
[SPEAKER_00]: And in terms of Yale, in terms of paying for Yale, I just looked it up.
55:04
[SPEAKER_00]: There was a bulletin from, yes, 2003.
55:06
[SPEAKER_00]: I think we talked about this before how much it was.
55:09
[SPEAKER_00]: It was in 2003, it was $37,000 to go to a year.
55:14
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it is now looking up now, almost $100,000 a year to go to Yale, which is insane.
55:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
55:21
[SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of people ask that they think that we're paid back that loan to the Gilmours, a question we don't know the answer to.
55:28
[SPEAKER_01]: we truly will never know because that was the agreement was that she insisted on paying it back Richard said without interest and he said that he didn't want her to start paying it back until I think she was four years removed with a good job with a good job.
55:41
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
55:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe she never got one.
55:44
[SPEAKER_01]: She may not have gotten one.
55:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
55:45
[SPEAKER_00]: And then on top of Yale, the other question was about where he's building, which I also looked up another article of from Yale specifically from their newsletter of someone who paid towards a building in 2010.
55:59
[SPEAKER_00]: And it was actually a 1964 alumni, which would have been around the time that Richard would have been an alumni.
56:05
[SPEAKER_00]: But it was someone who paid $50 million towards the building to be built for the School of Management.
56:12
[SPEAKER_00]: So it would have been anywhere from $25 to $50 million for the Gilmore's to buy a building in a race name.
56:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god.
56:22
[SPEAKER_01]: So this is in six plot line or a season seven.
56:24
[SPEAKER_00]: It was season six because it was Emily's botched eye surgery and they got a tidy settlement and Richard says a tidy settlement deed.
56:31
[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like tidy, this was certainly tidy and they decided to give it to Yale and they were gonna name a building.
56:38
[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, that day, 50 million dollars to have his name on this building for the school of management.
56:46
[SPEAKER_00]: Insane, but yeah, so I learned astronomy building is a lot less desirable than a school of management building, so it's to my opinion, so maybe it was less than 50 million, but crazy insane.
57:02
[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy.
57:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but on the note of Rory and honestly at first when you said the building, I kind of forgot about about all of that.
57:12
[SPEAKER_01]: But I was also thinking about like her paying back Richard and where we see her end up in the revival and a lot of people had questions about Rory's trust fund.
57:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think we'll ever be able to answer to that.
57:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, did she ever get grants?
57:24
[SPEAKER_01]: We don't know.
57:26
[SPEAKER_01]: I imagine she would have gotten something perhaps from Richard passing as well.
57:30
[SPEAKER_00]: maybe not because it would have been Emily, she would have been like, there is something for Luke in the will and for Laura lie.
57:39
[SPEAKER_00]: So like, there might have been something from her, but there's like a lot of unaccounted for money in terms of her trust fund from Grant, her money, like her Christopher money, like we're like, he finished paying for Yale.
57:52
[SPEAKER_00]: And so maybe that is in part
57:59
[SPEAKER_00]: Chris covered it but like Chris I I think that he inherited like 300 million because he was talking by in lower life fucking castle after he set up Gigi for life.
58:08
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I can't imagine that he didn't give anything to Rory to set her up.
58:13
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like why is Rory cost playing as a broke person?
58:16
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
58:17
[SPEAKER_00]: Like sell your brick in.
58:18
[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like with Rory in terms of like revival.
58:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like most inconsistent things is like where is all the money that she could have and should have had.
58:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because part of me was like, wait, an actual really good second revival is Lori's daughter finding the Berkin and being like, can I have this?
58:35
[SPEAKER_00]: Who is this from?
58:36
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
58:37
[SPEAKER_00]: And she's like, it's from your father.
58:38
[SPEAKER_00]: And so she has to go find her father, who gifted her mother, the Berkin bag.
58:43
[SPEAKER_00]: And we have Pia, pop of Pia and D. The search for the Birkin buyer.
58:49
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think all in all, like, one of the questions that's stood out to me that I think can encapsulate all of this is, was it an easier time economically in the year 2000?
58:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Or was the Gilmore Girls lifestyle just unrealistic?
59:00
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think both can be true.
59:02
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was an economically easier time, but also we have to suspend our disbelief in this television show that their lifestyle was a little unrealistic.
59:11
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that putting all of this and perspective that we talked about today made it a little more realistic.
59:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Like we're thinking about the food that they eat and the connections that they have, and maybe the income that Laura and I had at the time,
59:22
[SPEAKER_01]: It does put it into perspective.
59:24
[SPEAKER_01]: The support they were getting from the people around them, not just Emily and Richard, but the town, Luke, Suki, they live in a real community.
59:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, they have a village and have a village.
59:34
[SPEAKER_00]: They also have a very close proximity to wealth.
59:38
[SPEAKER_00]: So like, I think that between those two things and also TV magic,
59:42
[SPEAKER_00]: It all kind of makes sense, but the last question that we asked on our stories is a very, this was something that people ask a lot of questions about before we even asked this question.
59:53
[SPEAKER_00]: And that is what everyone thinks is in those little envelopes that Richard is handing out.
59:58
[SPEAKER_00]: I would love to get a little Richard envelope, which my personal belief is that when
1:00:04
[SPEAKER_00]: He said this is for Fez to Rory and her birthday, that was a thousand dollars.
1:00:08
[SPEAKER_00]: When he said Fez is an expensive and at her birthday party at the house I think he ever five hundred dollars because I wouldn't be surprised by that.
1:00:16
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a success.
1:00:16
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a success.
1:00:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and what do you think lower lies and Velopad at her graduation?
1:00:22
[SPEAKER_00]: I think a thousand dollars.
1:00:23
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because he said put it for something fun and then the real is just given out a thousand dollars
1:00:28
[SPEAKER_00]: He just said in full of, he had a Jason you won't want.
1:00:31
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I just think he had him ready.
1:00:33
[SPEAKER_00]: But I do think that when he says, put it toward something fun.
1:00:36
[SPEAKER_00]: I think to Laura lie that meant, I'm going to put this towards mine and race life because what is more fun than the two of us just live in our life together.
1:00:44
[SPEAKER_01]: or towards their chip to your up.
1:00:45
[SPEAKER_01]: You're up, or backpacking trip, you know, a movie night.
1:00:49
[SPEAKER_00]: So when they go to dosies, I don't know.
1:00:52
[SPEAKER_00]: They're just throwing shit in.
1:00:53
[SPEAKER_00]: They went to so true.
1:00:55
[SPEAKER_01]: But I loved doing this episode.
1:00:56
[SPEAKER_01]: We're obviously not done talking about it.
1:00:58
[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's still so many fun and deep questions that I have.
1:01:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I could, I know.
1:01:03
[SPEAKER_01]: We could have like a three hour long episode.
1:01:05
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so true.
1:01:06
[SPEAKER_01]: But we'll definitely have a money GTC.
1:01:08
[SPEAKER_01]: So call in.
1:01:10
[SPEAKER_01]: or comment on YouTube, your thoughts, your questions, things you may be disagree with us on, do you think that's the amount of money that Richard had in his envelopes?
1:01:18
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
1:01:19
[SPEAKER_01]: That was about where people landed.
1:01:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Anyone, everyone's to think that is.
1:01:23
[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone said anywhere from $250 to $2,000.
1:01:26
[SPEAKER_00]: Someone's 10k and I said, so what's that 10k?
1:01:28
[SPEAKER_00]: He saw that and I was like, oh, I'm in that envelope now.
1:01:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
1:01:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Just casually handing out $10,000.
1:01:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, given the amount of money we think they're making, not unreasonable.
1:01:36
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think it's something like a history that Richard has?
1:01:39
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think that like he is like, this is not something new to him that like he's been doing this for a long time as little gifts or do you think it's just for his girls?
1:01:49
[SPEAKER_00]: I just like to, I'm thinking of, because next week's topic, I'm literally so excited about we are going to do a little bit of what Emily and Richard Prequel would have been like, and I just love the idea of college age Richard having little money envelopes in like a very sarcastic way, like using that.
1:02:08
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I can see it.
1:02:10
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I think if that a thing, but there's so many questions to answer to about that.
1:02:16
[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll have more to say on that in the next episode.
