- 0:03Speaker 1: Happy Monday too well, inasmuch as Monday has its moments,
- 0:09Speaker 1: whether they be happy or no, but we hope it
- 0:12Speaker 1: goes well for you.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Good afternoon.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 0:17Speaker 1: under the Zone and where you can always listen to
- 0:20Speaker 1: us for free on the iHeartRadio app. My name is
- 0:22Speaker 1: Craig Waite, Thanks very much for joining us, joined by
- 0:25Speaker 1: the producer Jay Carman, and we go with you from
- 0:31Speaker 1: two to five each and every weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday. Okay,
- 0:36Speaker 1: first things first, a little bit of cleanup business. As
- 0:40Speaker 1: you know, the prior three weeks we gave way copies
- 0:43Speaker 1: of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine.
- 0:46Speaker 2: They're all done. We gave them all away.
- 0:49Speaker 1: If you have won a copy and you need to
- 0:55Speaker 1: get it, you can make arrangements to come down here
- 0:59Speaker 1: and pick it up at the radio. We can just
- 1:00Speaker 1: come down here during business hours and someone will get
- 1:03Speaker 1: your copy to you. So we're glad to do that
- 1:06Speaker 1: every year. We've been doing that continuously since nineteen ninety eight,
- 1:10Speaker 1: and glad to do it again. Okay, things to get
- 1:14Speaker 1: to on the program this afternoon. The Loghorns come off
- 1:20Speaker 1: the Saturday scrimmage, which and we're going to let you
- 1:25Speaker 1: hear kind of a mixed bag between what Steve Sarkisian
- 1:29Speaker 1: said after the scrimmage on Saturday and some things he
- 1:31Speaker 1: said in a media availability today, and we'll hear more
- 1:33Speaker 1: of that tomorrow, that there was a mixed bag. There
- 1:39Speaker 1: were some good things he saw, there were some things
- 1:40Speaker 1: he did not like out of that as well. And
- 1:44Speaker 1: having been at the scrimmage on Saturday, I can tell
- 1:46Speaker 1: you I understand that there's things he likes and things
- 1:50Speaker 1: that he didn't like. And so as they go down
- 1:53Speaker 1: here inside of two weeks to kick off twelve days out,
- 1:58Speaker 1: the emphasis is continue to be on sharpening and getting
- 2:02Speaker 1: better in all of those things. So we'll hear from
- 2:05Speaker 1: sark about that. We're gonna he from Brian Schottenneimer, the
- 2:08Speaker 1: Cowboys head coach. Cowboys came up with another pre season
- 2:12Speaker 1: victory as they won in Arizona on Saturday, and now
- 2:16Speaker 1: they're back in Frisco and their preseason finale is Friday
- 2:21Speaker 1: night at Jerry World at AT and T Stadium, the
- 2:25Speaker 1: host of New Orleans Saints. Hopefully the two sides will
- 2:29Speaker 1: be a little more civil to one another than they
- 2:32Speaker 1: were when they had the joint practice in LA a
- 2:34Speaker 1: week ago and accrued their respective teams a one half
- 2:40Speaker 1: million dollars fine. I've not seen I know Jerry Jones
- 2:44Speaker 1: said they were planning to appeal that, but I've not
- 2:46Speaker 1: seen anything any update on that on whether the NFL
- 2:50Speaker 1: heard the appeal yet or did and said forget about it,
- 2:55Speaker 1: fork over the five hundred grand, or if they said Okay, yeah,
- 2:58Speaker 1: you only have to pay two hundred or whatever.
- 3:01Speaker 2: If something comes down on that, we'll let you know.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Also some other football topics that we'll get to and
- 3:11Speaker 1: major League Baseball topics as well. We have special guests
- 3:14Speaker 1: this afternoon, four o'clock hour Lifetime Loghorn and fourth going
- 3:20Speaker 1: into his fourth year as an NFL pro Rochean Johnson,
- 3:24Speaker 1: we'll join us to talk about how things are going
- 3:28Speaker 1: in fall camp and getting ready. He had a great
- 3:33Speaker 1: twenty twenty four season, had the injury problems of a
- 3:36Speaker 1: year ago, and we'll be trying to bounce back with the.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Bears this year.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And we'll visit with a rochean to talk about that
- 3:45Speaker 1: and talk about something that means an awful lot to him,
- 3:48Speaker 1: an initiative that's kind of local here locally based as
- 3:52Speaker 1: well here, So we'll do that coming up and that's
- 3:56Speaker 1: in the four o'clock hour. How is your weekend, Jay Carmon,
- 4:00Speaker 1: did you was this another sprint down the Houston weekend
- 4:04Speaker 1: for you?
- 4:05Speaker 4: It was further, Craig, it was a further sprint. It
- 4:07Speaker 4: was at times a crawl down to port A, Ransas.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Oh yeah, for an engagement party a couple of my
- 4:13Speaker 4: college friends, and it was my first time there. I
- 4:16Speaker 4: did see a lot of Longhorn gear, which surprised me.
- 4:19Speaker 4: But yeah, it was a pretty beach. It was a
- 4:26Speaker 4: fun place to spend a weekend and get together with
- 4:29Speaker 4: some friends that aren't all together in the same place
- 4:31Speaker 4: enough anymore.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Okay, a couple of things work at first.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Of all, anywhere in the state of Texas, you should
- 4:37Speaker 1: ever be surprised to see longhorn gear.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I just hear.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I got a text the other day from my friend
- 4:43Speaker 1: Brett Dolan. He does a lot of national play by play.
- 4:45Speaker 1: He was one of the Asteroids broadcasters for about five years.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Does a lot of college football. So Brett Dolan text
- 4:51Speaker 1: me the other day and he goes, saw a couple
- 4:53Speaker 1: of people decked out of longhorn.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Gear, and I was like, are you in Houston? He said, no, Maine.
- 4:59Speaker 5: Oh hello, it.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Was in Maine.
- 5:02Speaker 3: So long.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Wring fans are everywhere. That's one two. You said you
- 5:07Speaker 1: went down there for a friend's engagement party. Yes, Allison,
- 5:11Speaker 1: get any ideas or something got nudged and elbows and
- 5:15Speaker 1: stuff like that.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Hey, you're paying attention here.
- 5:18Speaker 4: At one point I handed her a ring shaped cookie.
- 5:20Speaker 4: So don't get any ideas just yet.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Look at you. Look at you trying to be a
- 5:26Speaker 1: little bit beat the punch on the thing, or or
- 5:28Speaker 1: at least uh trying to get out front of it.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Good move.
- 5:33Speaker 5: I gotta lead block for myself sometimes.
- 5:35Speaker 2: There you go.
- 5:35Speaker 3: I understand.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Got to run the ball.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, I understand. Okay.
- 5:40Speaker 1: So one of the things that I want to get
- 5:43Speaker 1: into is this story about a name that now all
- 5:50Speaker 1: of a sudden, has become a household name, because until
- 5:56Speaker 1: a few days ago, the only place you were really
- 6:00Speaker 1: hearing the name Daikwon Wright was in the state of Mississippi,
- 6:04Speaker 1: where he had played for Lane Kiven, and in the
- 6:07Speaker 1: Cleveland Browns training camp where he was trying to earn
- 6:10Speaker 1: a roster spot.
- 6:12Speaker 3: He didn't.
- 6:14Speaker 1: He was released now for a lot of players, especially
- 6:21Speaker 1: a tight end like Daiquon Wright. Uh the release of
- 6:26Speaker 1: an NFL training camp, usually from an NFL training camp,
- 6:29Speaker 1: usually signals one of two things. Either you could be
- 6:33Speaker 1: invited back to the practice squad, or you could try
- 6:37Speaker 1: to catch on with another team. That's what a lot
- 6:40Speaker 1: of players do. The third option, the least attractive for
- 6:44Speaker 1: a lot of those guys, is to say, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 1: my time in football has been great, but it's done.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Ud Guan Wright is trying a fourth option that has
- 6:54Speaker 1: never before been attempted in football. He apparently has an
- 7:03Speaker 1: agreement in place for the twenty twenty six season to
- 7:08Speaker 1: play football at LSU. I think about this. He just
- 7:14Speaker 1: got cut from the Cleveland Browns if he clears waivers.
- 7:20Speaker 1: According to his agent Drew Rosenhouse and Kyle Lincoln, who
- 7:25Speaker 1: told Adam Schefter this yesterday, mentioned it to him that
- 7:32Speaker 1: he is going to be the first player to have
- 7:35Speaker 1: an agreement to return to play in college after signing
- 7:41Speaker 1: with the NFL as and here's the key word here,
- 7:44Speaker 1: an undrafted free agent. He signed with the Eagles after
- 7:49Speaker 1: the draft and then was cleaned on waivers by the
- 7:51Speaker 1: Browns a couple of weeks ago. Now for those of
- 7:56Speaker 1: you who are immediately.
- 7:57Speaker 3: So, we can't do that.
- 7:59Speaker 1: It's pro athlete. Now, he's getting money, he's in games.
- 8:02Speaker 1: He can't can't do that, can't can't return. Well, here's
- 8:06Speaker 1: the first thing. He did not appear in either of
- 8:10Speaker 1: Cleveland's first two preseason games, so he's not set foot
- 8:14Speaker 1: on the field in a game.
- 8:16Speaker 5: It's like Bettioco in the NBA.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Yeah, he hasn't practiced in more than a week, but
- 8:24Speaker 1: he did dress.
- 8:25Speaker 2: He did.
- 8:25Speaker 1: He got into uniform for the brown second preseason game
- 8:28Speaker 1: against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. Brown's head coach Todd
- 8:34Speaker 1: Munkin said right was sideline because of an injury, and
- 8:38Speaker 1: on Wednesday of last week, he officially entered the transfer
- 8:42Speaker 1: portal after he and a group of athletes who filed
- 8:45Speaker 1: the lawsuit in Louisiana were granted a temporary restraining order
- 8:49Speaker 1: to return to college for one more season. I know
- 8:51Speaker 1: we've got you can probably pull it up that SoundBite
- 8:53Speaker 1: with Todd Munkin talking about it's been all over Sports
- 8:57Speaker 1: Center and everywhere else where. He's talking about, man, that's
- 8:59Speaker 1: crazy and anywhere. He got the call from Lane Kiffin.
- 9:02Speaker 5: I might have to clean that sound bite up before
- 9:03Speaker 5: we can remember what he said, right, Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yeah, there was one for us. Yeah, there was an
- 9:08Speaker 2: S bomb in there.
- 9:10Speaker 5: I have Lane Kiffin talking about it too, if.
- 9:12Speaker 2: You yeah, yeah, yes absolutely.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Now, of course here's the rub, and this is why
- 9:17Speaker 1: I mentioned the Old Miss thing right, played for Kiffin
- 9:23Speaker 1: at Old Miss. Kiffin, of course has since moved on
- 9:26Speaker 1: to LSU, and now Wright is trying to transfer to LSU.
- 9:34Speaker 1: He had filed a lawsuit because he was not included
- 9:37Speaker 1: in that ncaa new rule which is less than two
- 9:40Speaker 1: months old, that grants most Division one athletes five years
- 9:43Speaker 1: of eligibility over five years. It doesn't take effect until
- 9:47Speaker 1: next season, and several other court injunctions have allowed players
- 9:52Speaker 1: who had completed forty years of eligibility to be granted
- 9:57Speaker 1: the fifth year to be able to go back. Cole
- 10:00Speaker 1: Hudson's one of those guys with the with the Longhorns. Now,
- 10:02Speaker 1: Cole was never drafted, was never in an NFL training camp,
- 10:06Speaker 1: if I remember correctly, It wasn't picked up by anybody,
- 10:09Speaker 1: and then and then went back obviously never appeared in
- 10:13Speaker 1: a game or anything like that.
- 10:15Speaker 2: So he went ahead. You have you have an update
- 10:20Speaker 2: on it.
- 10:20Speaker 4: He went to I remember seeing pictures of him in
- 10:23Speaker 4: a Brown's uniform. That's because he went to a rookie
- 10:25Speaker 4: mini camp. So he never had a contract, never had
- 10:28Speaker 4: a contract. He was in a rookie mini camp, uh,
- 10:31Speaker 4: but was never in actual training camp after.
- 10:34Speaker 3: That, and didn't and and and didn't get a contract.
- 10:38Speaker 1: So then he went back and he you know, filed
- 10:41Speaker 1: and got the t RO and he's in a long
- 10:44Speaker 1: worn uniform and he's been practicing. In fact, he got
- 10:46Speaker 1: into fall camp maybe five days after the long warn started.
- 10:50Speaker 2: It wasn't long.
- 10:51Speaker 1: It was like when inside of a week that he
- 10:53Speaker 1: got there, because we were at SEC Football Media Days
- 10:58Speaker 1: when Sark was being asked about it about you know,
- 11:02Speaker 1: because at time at that time he had filed for
- 11:06Speaker 1: the restraining order, it filed for the injunction, and it
- 11:10Speaker 1: had not yet been granted at the time, and then
- 11:16Speaker 1: it ultimately was granted. But the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals,
- 11:21Speaker 1: and we mentioned this story last Friday, that the Tent
- 11:24Speaker 1: Circuit Court of Appeals granted the NCAAA a stay on
- 11:29Speaker 1: Friday morning in order to reverse the federal judge's decision
- 11:35Speaker 1: that had opened the door for all athletes who started
- 11:39Speaker 1: college in the twenty twenty two twenty twenty three academic
- 11:42Speaker 1: year and played for four consecutive seasons to return for
- 11:46Speaker 1: a fifth season. That's what the Louisiana judge had granted.
- 11:50Speaker 1: The NCAA was no but the stay. That stay does
- 11:54Speaker 1: not wipe out the dozens of athletes who have already
- 11:58Speaker 1: successfully petion for restraining orders to play a fifth season
- 12:03Speaker 1: in state courts around the country. So the Browns, by
- 12:07Speaker 1: the way, activated starting defensive tackle Malik Collins from the
- 12:11Speaker 1: physically unable to perform list and a corresponding move when
- 12:15Speaker 1: Wright was waived.
- 12:17Speaker 2: So we're gonna hear coming up here in a few
- 12:20Speaker 2: minutes long.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Worn's head coach Steve Sarkisian's thoughts on this, as well
- 12:25Speaker 1: as other comments from start, some coming from the scrimmage
- 12:30Speaker 1: on Saturday, as well as always, we invite you to
- 12:34Speaker 1: join in the conversation.
- 12:35Speaker 2: You can do it via text.
- 12:37Speaker 1: You text the program by texting the word texas followed
- 12:41Speaker 1: by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
- 12:44Speaker 1: So you text the word texas followed by your questioner
- 12:46Speaker 1: comment to eight one five to three zero.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 12:52Speaker 1: You can also use the talk about You know, the
- 12:54Speaker 1: talkback isn't just for contesting. You know, we did that
- 12:58Speaker 1: and everybody who who accessed us via the talkback feature
- 13:04Speaker 1: was in the running to get a copy of that magazine.
- 13:06Speaker 1: And those who did receive copies of the magazine were
- 13:10Speaker 1: successful either by answering a trivia question correctly and got
- 13:14Speaker 1: to us first in line on that or their talk
- 13:19Speaker 1: back entry was randomly selected because they were like whatever
- 13:23Speaker 1: the number seven.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Entry that we designated in advance.
- 13:27Speaker 1: But having said all that, if you want to just
- 13:30Speaker 1: talk to us on the talkback line, you're certainly welcome
- 13:34Speaker 1: to do it. All you have to do is download
- 13:36Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app. It's very easy to do. You can
- 13:39Speaker 1: just download it from your app store wherever, and it's free.
- 13:44Speaker 1: It doesn't cost anything. So once you download it, then
- 13:47Speaker 1: you'll go into your search bar, search window, whatever and
- 13:50Speaker 1: type in AM thirteen under the zone. It'll pop straight up,
- 13:53Speaker 1: and then when it does, you'll see two buttons. One's
- 13:55Speaker 1: a little white triangular shape button that's to listen to
- 13:57Speaker 1: what's going on in the air.
- 13:58Speaker 3: At the time.
- 13:59Speaker 1: But there's a red button with a little white microphone
- 14:01Speaker 1: in it. You tap that button opens up the talk
- 14:04Speaker 1: back line, and you have up to thirty seconds you
- 14:06Speaker 1: can leave us a message.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Don't go over thirty it'll cut you off.
- 14:09Speaker 1: But you got thirty seconds you can say, hey, I
- 14:11Speaker 1: think this is crazy about this daykwon Right thing. The
- 14:14Speaker 1: NCAA should be against it, or hey, man's got right
- 14:17Speaker 1: to test the waters. He didn't play in a game.
- 14:20Speaker 1: He should be allowed to come back. Whatever you think
- 14:22Speaker 1: about it, you can let us know on the talkback
- 14:25Speaker 1: line as well. All right, coming up, we're gonna hear
- 14:28Speaker 1: from Long wrn's head coach Steve Sarkisian. We're also going
- 14:30Speaker 1: to hear from Cowboys head coach Brian shot Namber. We'll
- 14:33Speaker 1: do that on a Monday afternoon right here on Sports
- 14:35Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app
- 14:42Speaker 1: Night True Here on a Monday on Sports Radio AM
- 14:47Speaker 1: thirteen hunderd Zone.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Why to have you with us?
- 14:52Speaker 1: I mentioned this, you know this, this story about day
- 14:59Speaker 1: Kwon Right and and how it's you know, taken on
- 15:02Speaker 1: a life of its own. Really after the Cleveland Browns
- 15:06Speaker 1: waived him a tight end who played at Ole miss
- 15:10Speaker 1: and in twenty twenty four and twenty twenty five. Last year,
- 15:15Speaker 1: he caught thirty nine passes for six hundred and thirty
- 15:17Speaker 1: five yards in five touchdowns for the Rebels. He graduated
- 15:20Speaker 1: from high school in twenty twenty two. His college eligibility
- 15:24Speaker 1: ended last season. Had filed a lawsuit because he was
- 15:27Speaker 1: not included in that new NCAA rule that grants most
- 15:31Speaker 1: Division one athletes five years of eligibility over five years,
- 15:34Speaker 1: but it doesn't take effect until next season, and a
- 15:36Speaker 1: lot of people have challenged that, saying, look, I played
- 15:39Speaker 1: four years, I should get a fifth and retroactively. They've
- 15:42Speaker 1: been granted that, Like I said, Cole Hudson one of
- 15:44Speaker 1: those guys as well.
- 15:46Speaker 2: So this is a different thing though, now where a.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Guy actually winds up on an NFL training camp roster
- 15:57Speaker 1: and as being paid in training camp, had not appeared
- 15:59Speaker 1: in the game yet and now having been waived by Cleveland,
- 16:06Speaker 1: is wanting to join LSU, where Lane Kiffen is now.
- 16:11Speaker 1: First of all, here's some comments from Lane Kiffin about
- 16:14Speaker 1: this whole thing.
- 16:18Speaker 5: What comfortable are you with NFL players coming back to college.
- 16:25Speaker 6: That's a good question. I think that situations are different,
- 16:36Speaker 6: So you know, in general, should NFL players come back
- 16:41Speaker 6: to college I believe it doesn't matter necessary what I
- 16:44Speaker 6: believe that answer would be.
- 16:45Speaker 3: No.
- 16:46Speaker 6: I think there every circumstance should be looked at differently,
- 16:50Speaker 6: that this is a very unique circumstance, again because I
- 16:55Speaker 6: think there's not a lot of education on this how
- 16:58Speaker 6: this all happened. The judge found that these players should
- 17:03Speaker 6: have been told and should have known that they were
- 17:06Speaker 6: going to be eligible for a fifth year, which every
- 17:09Speaker 6: player moving forward, every athlete moving forward in all sports has,
- 17:15Speaker 6: and so they should have known that in December when
- 17:17Speaker 6: they were making decisions. Had they known that, they would
- 17:19Speaker 6: have stayed, they had no eligibly.
- 17:22Speaker 3: So this is not.
- 17:24Speaker 6: Many other circumstances have been discussed over the years about
- 17:26Speaker 6: professionals coming back.
- 17:28Speaker 3: They did not know they had a year.
- 17:31Speaker 6: Since then the judges said, you do have a year,
- 17:34Speaker 6: and so because of that, this is a different situation
- 17:37Speaker 6: in that where they're just going back to play, they're
- 17:40Speaker 6: wanting to go back to play the year that they've
- 17:41Speaker 6: been granted, not an individual case where one player went
- 17:45Speaker 6: somewhere to try to win a case. This is a
- 17:48Speaker 6: lot of athletes in these and a lot of these
- 17:50Speaker 6: around the country that for my information isn't stopping. You
- 17:56Speaker 6: know that there are cases right now that are going
- 17:59Speaker 6: to come amount where there's other athletes in the same cases,
- 18:04Speaker 6: and so you may end up having hundreds of athletes
- 18:08Speaker 6: in this case that that are told they have.
- 18:11Speaker 3: A fifth year.
- 18:12Speaker 6: And so this is just a really unique circumstance. It
- 18:14Speaker 6: isn't a traditional you know, just pros going back to college,
- 18:19Speaker 6: you know, just because.
- 18:20Speaker 3: They went in case.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Okay, point may that by Lane Kiffen. Now we're gonna
- 18:28Speaker 1: hear sound in fact where you're quite a bit of
- 18:31Speaker 1: here coming up just in a moment from log Worn's
- 18:35Speaker 1: head coach Steve Sarcasian from what do you have to
- 18:38Speaker 1: say after the scrimmage on Saturday? But they're at another
- 18:42Speaker 1: media availability this morning, sark was asked about this take.
- 18:47Speaker 2: One right thing and what his thoughts on all of this.
- 18:50Speaker 7: We are I don't even know you know this this
- 18:54Speaker 7: stuff is we are like changing every day right now.
- 19:00Speaker 7: It feels like almost every three hours, you know, there's
- 19:02Speaker 7: a new message from Commissioner Sankie about something or something
- 19:09Speaker 7: that somebody's reporting in the media that this is what
- 19:13Speaker 7: might occur or what's occurring. I think it's important for
- 19:16Speaker 7: us here, especially like we have a really good team,
- 19:19Speaker 7: and focusing on our team, to me is paramount and
- 19:24Speaker 7: the most important thing right now. Anything auxiliary outside of that.
- 19:29Speaker 7: I'm not in so much of a rush to say, oh,
- 19:31Speaker 7: let's go do that now, or let's go do that now.
- 19:33Speaker 7: Like I like our team, if and or when, if
- 19:38Speaker 7: there's something that popped up to where we could upgrade it, great,
- 19:41Speaker 7: but we don't even know. Like today you can take them,
- 19:43Speaker 7: tomorrow you can't. I don't know what's going to happen,
- 19:46Speaker 7: and I don't even know if it's good or not.
- 19:47Speaker 7: I'll be honest with you, I don't know if it's
- 19:49Speaker 7: good because like for us, I know we've got a
- 19:52Speaker 7: locker room full of guys who have been working together
- 19:54Speaker 7: and their connectivity is so good for the last eight months.
- 19:59Speaker 8: Is it worth? Is it worth rocking that boat?
- 20:02Speaker 7: You know, by bringing somebody in that isn't familiar with
- 20:04Speaker 7: your program. Cole was a little different. He'd been with
- 20:08Speaker 7: our program for four years. He knows who we are,
- 20:10Speaker 7: he knows Coach Flood, he knows those guys in that room.
- 20:12Speaker 7: To bring in a true outsider and to think like
- 20:17Speaker 7: all of a sudden, he's gonna be our quarterback, like
- 20:19Speaker 7: I don't know how to do that. Like I wouldn't
- 20:21Speaker 7: know how to do that. And I get every situation
- 20:24Speaker 7: is a little bit different, and maybe there's better coaches
- 20:27Speaker 7: out there than us, you know, But I just think
- 20:29Speaker 7: it's a delicate situation. The powers that be are ultimately
- 20:35Speaker 7: going to get to a final decision, and then when
- 20:37Speaker 7: the final decisions made, then we're gonna have choices to make,
- 20:40Speaker 7: or maybe we will have no choices to make. I
- 20:42Speaker 7: don't know, you know, we'll have to find out.
- 20:44Speaker 2: All right. So that's where that is.
- 20:48Speaker 1: And like I said, this thing is is so new,
- 20:53Speaker 1: so different. There's gonna be there's gonna be a lot
- 20:57Speaker 1: that's that's going to be different. And I think starting
- 21:01Speaker 1: makes a good point when he says, seems like every
- 21:04Speaker 1: fifteen minutes something's happening. They're getting So with that in mind,
- 21:11Speaker 1: we'll let it rest for the moment, and if we
- 21:14Speaker 1: even during the course of the program this afternoon, if
- 21:16Speaker 1: there's an update on that, because remember one of the
- 21:20Speaker 1: one of the things that's involved here is that the
- 21:24Speaker 1: Southeastern Conference has a rule where you can't transfer inside
- 21:30Speaker 1: the league from one school to the other. And you know,
- 21:40Speaker 1: while you can't transfer inside the league from one school
- 21:44Speaker 1: to the other. Off of that, the case that Daikwon
- 21:49Speaker 1: Wrights agents and representatives are making is that he wasn't
- 21:54Speaker 1: planning to transfer at LSU. He's trying to go to
- 21:56Speaker 1: the NFL and couldn't make it there, and so now, oh,
- 21:59Speaker 1: I'm going to go went to the portal, and.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Now I go to LSU and play for my former coach.
- 22:03Speaker 2: All right.
- 22:03Speaker 4: And for people that are confused thinking, wait, Parker Livingston
- 22:06Speaker 4: transfer from Texas to Oklahoma, it doesn't apply during the
- 22:08Speaker 4: main window.
- 22:09Speaker 1: That's exactly right, in the transfer portal window. That's that's
- 22:14Speaker 1: the key off of that. Yeah, all right, let's hear
- 22:17Speaker 1: from some regular football stuff from Sorry. This is the
- 22:20Speaker 1: wrap up of what he had to say about what
- 22:22Speaker 1: his thoughts were on the scrimmage.
- 22:24Speaker 3: After the scrimmage on Saturday.
- 22:27Speaker 7: I thought a good and bad scrimmage. I know that
- 22:33Speaker 7: sounds kind of like, how's it good and bad? I
- 22:36Speaker 7: thought it was good. From the standpoint of this. We
- 22:39Speaker 7: ran I think one hundred and twenty plays today in
- 22:41Speaker 7: the scrimmage. It was one hundred and five degrees in
- 22:45Speaker 7: the field. On the field, it was just close to
- 22:47Speaker 7: one hundred and fifty degrees and so the fact that
- 22:50Speaker 7: our guys fought through those conditions and getting comfortable in
- 22:55Speaker 7: those conditions, I thought it was good for us. And
- 22:59Speaker 7: I thought that, uh, coming out of this scrimmage of
- 23:02Speaker 7: one hundred and twenty plays and having no no injuries,
- 23:05Speaker 7: that's a positive. When a lot of teams around the
- 23:07Speaker 7: country are having this scrimmage and and guys are going down.
- 23:10Speaker 7: So I think it speaks to the conditioning of the team. Uh,
- 23:13Speaker 7: the where the kind of where they're at. I thought
- 23:15Speaker 7: I'll start on defense. You know, I thought defensively, they
- 23:20Speaker 7: really showed up ready to go today. I would probably
- 23:23Speaker 7: argue that the last two days, you know you some
- 23:26Speaker 7: would argue the offense got the better of the defense.
- 23:28Speaker 7: I thought the defense came ready to go today. I
- 23:31Speaker 7: think they created four turnovers. I think they they created
- 23:35Speaker 7: plenty of third longs. I think they they they rushed
- 23:38Speaker 7: the passer, they were sticky and coverage. With that being said,
- 23:42Speaker 7: there were there were things that they need to improve
- 23:45Speaker 7: upon too. I thought offensively, it just was it was
- 23:48Speaker 7: too sloppy for my liking. I feel like we should
- 23:50Speaker 7: be better, more efficient from an offensive perspective. You know again,
- 23:56Speaker 7: you know that not to say that there weren't some
- 23:58Speaker 7: good things, you know, to think that all all three
- 24:00Speaker 7: starting wideouts caught touchdowns or at least two of them,
- 24:04Speaker 7: I know for sure.
- 24:05Speaker 8: I know Emmitt caught two.
- 24:06Speaker 7: Excuse me, Ryan Wingo caught one, and then and then
- 24:09Speaker 7: Jermaine Burton got one. So the fact that the ball
- 24:12Speaker 7: is getting spread around the way that we want to
- 24:14Speaker 7: was good. But again, just just too many errors occurring
- 24:19Speaker 7: on the offensive side of the ball today. That is
- 24:21Speaker 7: uncharacteristic for what we've put on tape in practice, and
- 24:25Speaker 7: so we've got to get back to that mentality, regardless
- 24:28Speaker 7: if it's a scrimmage format, a practice format, a game format,
- 24:31Speaker 7: because the game is going to be here in two weeks.
- 24:34Speaker 8: But but all in all, I like.
- 24:36Speaker 7: The intent of kind of for the most part of
- 24:39Speaker 7: what the majority of the guys brought. There's some guys
- 24:42Speaker 7: that need to be better, and that's that's not uncommon
- 24:45Speaker 7: to think that every guy is going to come out
- 24:47Speaker 7: and just have a great scrimmage every time and go out.
- 24:49Speaker 7: That's probably not fair, but it's our job as coaches
- 24:52Speaker 7: to get as close as we can to one hundred
- 24:54Speaker 7: percent of the guys performing at optimal level.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Okay, all right, we'll hear some more from sark and
- 25:00Speaker 1: we'll hear from Ryan Schottenheimer coming up.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Next hour as well.
- 25:03Speaker 1: But up next inconceivable here on a Monday afternoon. We'll
- 25:06Speaker 1: do that xt when we continue on Sports Radio AM
- 25:08Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app. Second hour
- 25:31Speaker 1: of the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 25:33Speaker 1: the Zone here on a Monday afternoon, and we're glad
- 25:38Speaker 1: you joined us. Craig Way alongside the producer Jay Carmon,
- 25:41Speaker 1: we're ready up until five o'clock this afternoon. Coming up
- 25:44Speaker 1: at four o'clock hour, Roshawn Johnson, the former long worn
- 25:49Speaker 1: running back lifetime long worn now is Chicago Bear. We'll
- 25:52Speaker 1: join us. So we'll visit with Row. Coming up in
- 25:55Speaker 1: the four o'clock hour. In a few minutes, we'll hear
- 25:59Speaker 1: more from Longhorn's head coach Steve Sarkisian, and also from
- 26:02Speaker 1: Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer, coming off the Texas scrimmage
- 26:07Speaker 1: of the weekend and the Cowboys preseason game. Now, a
- 26:11Speaker 1: couple of those topics lead us to clean up from
- 26:14Speaker 1: our number one on the text line.
- 26:18Speaker 2: First of all.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Somebody asks where can we get a recording in the
- 26:20Speaker 1: interview with Rojo? Work commitments? Understand those work commitments. So
- 26:24Speaker 1: going well for you? The easiest thing is go to
- 26:29Speaker 1: a podcast page at AM thirteen under the zone dot com.
- 26:34Speaker 1: It's there, it's there, Am I right, Jay Carman into perpetuity, right.
- 26:39Speaker 4: Yeah, you can find you can find shows going back
- 26:42Speaker 4: a couple of years on there.
- 26:43Speaker 1: So if you go to AM thirteen under the zone
- 26:46Speaker 1: dot com, then what you go to the podcast page right, yep, okay,
- 26:51Speaker 1: And then you go to the podcast page and you
- 26:54Speaker 1: find the date of the show that you're looking for, correct.
- 26:56Speaker 5: And I'll sort most recent at the top.
- 27:00Speaker 2: So can't be any more recent than today.
- 27:02Speaker 4: If you're an Apple Music, if you're a Spotify person,
- 27:05Speaker 4: search the Craigway Show or AM thirteen hundred zone on there.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Or better yet, if you're already listening to us on
- 27:09Speaker 4: the iHeartRadio app, you can find it there as well.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Sure, so it's all there, and the conversation that we'll
- 27:16Speaker 1: have with Rojo next hour will wind up on that
- 27:20Speaker 1: podcast page after the show is done today.
- 27:23Speaker 3: So I hope that answers that question.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Let's see, okay, question here, and I will preface this
- 27:33Speaker 1: by saying I know who this is, because this is
- 27:37Speaker 1: the same person who Texas quite often about their displeasure
- 27:40Speaker 1: with the Texas offense. I respect their opinion on that.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Don't agree with it, but I do respect it, and
- 27:46Speaker 1: therefore I'm more than willing to read their opinion he
- 27:51Speaker 1: said two weeks or he or she says two weeks
- 27:54Speaker 1: out from the start of the season. The following issues
- 27:56Speaker 1: are a little concerning to Texas fans. One players being
- 28:00Speaker 1: dismissed from the team due to contact. Is this an
- 28:02Speaker 1: example of underlying issues within the team? To the offense
- 28:05Speaker 1: continues to show signs of zero improvement from scrimmage to scrimmage?
- 28:09Speaker 2: Is this result of not.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Hiring an offensive Cornado Tour address the offensive woes of
- 28:14Speaker 1: last year.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Okay, let's go point by point.
- 28:17Speaker 1: First of all, following issues are a little concerning to
- 28:22Speaker 1: Texas fans. If you're speaking for others other than yourself,
- 28:28Speaker 1: that's fine, and maybe there are other famis not denying that,
- 28:31Speaker 1: by the way, but just saying this sounds I know
- 28:34Speaker 1: it's concerning to you. To the text or on this
- 28:38Speaker 1: players being the players would be incorrect. A player has
- 28:44Speaker 1: been dismissed from the team due to conduct, not players.
- 28:51Speaker 1: A player has meant, so the use of the plural
- 28:55Speaker 1: players makes it sound like a collection of them going
- 28:57Speaker 1: one guy has been Is this an example of underlying
- 29:01Speaker 1: issues within the team? Apparently not from what the little
- 29:04Speaker 1: that I do know about it. This goes back to
- 29:08Speaker 1: some issues the player. Of course, we're talking about Sayah
- 29:11Speaker 1: Anthony Smith, who was dismissed from the team. This goes
- 29:16Speaker 1: back to some unhappiness that he had expressed and also
- 29:27Speaker 1: had lost his starting job at the linebacker spot as well.
- 29:32Speaker 1: So I think there was some history about it and
- 29:34Speaker 1: it led into him. But I do not think it's
- 29:36Speaker 1: an example of underlying issues within the team, because when
- 29:39Speaker 1: you hear from the other teammates they do the same thing.
- 29:43Speaker 1: They say that this is a really good group and
- 29:47Speaker 1: doesn't mean that everybody is going to be happy. Unfortunately,
- 29:52Speaker 1: it's going to be the way of the world on
- 29:54Speaker 1: that that some folks are going to be disappointed with
- 29:57Speaker 1: some of the guys with where they are. You know,
- 30:00Speaker 1: one thing that Sark does talk about is they'll they
- 30:05Speaker 1: have the very real conversations and they sit down with
- 30:08Speaker 1: these players and tell them where they are and why
- 30:12Speaker 1: they are where they are, and what they need to
- 30:15Speaker 1: work on and how to be better in things of
- 30:17Speaker 1: that nature. So I think that's more the issue than
- 30:20Speaker 1: quote unquote underlying issues. And then the third thing you said,
- 30:26Speaker 1: show signs of zero improvement from scrimage discriminat We just
- 30:29Speaker 1: heard Sark say that there were things he did like
- 30:33Speaker 1: about it, so that wouldn't be zero, But there were
- 30:36Speaker 1: other things that were sloppy this There was mistakes. I
- 30:38Speaker 1: was there, I saw it myself, and that is correct
- 30:41Speaker 1: that that's not improvement when those things do happen.
- 30:44Speaker 2: And you're right, however, and you and I have been on.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Opposite sides of this fence where you say, is that
- 30:51Speaker 1: the result of not hiring an offensive coordinator to address
- 30:53Speaker 1: the offensive blows of last year? We're never going to
- 30:56Speaker 1: agree on that. I know you're a dog with a
- 30:59Speaker 1: bone on that deal. I know how you feel about it,
- 31:01Speaker 1: and that's okay, but we're not going to agree on
- 31:04Speaker 1: that that element because I don't think you're going to
- 31:07Speaker 1: have a better person in position to call the places
- 31:10Speaker 1: on that than sorry, on this football team, as he does.
- 31:13Speaker 1: But that's okay. That's why I read the text and
- 31:15Speaker 1: you're welcome the text any time. Okay, somebody else in
- 31:19Speaker 1: talking about this story that has really captured a great
- 31:27Speaker 1: deal of the the the imagination, if you will, and
- 31:32Speaker 1: certainly the headlines with regard in college football, and that
- 31:36Speaker 1: is the Daykuon Wright situation where Daikwon Wright played for
- 31:43Speaker 1: a couple of years at Ole Miss and played for
- 31:49Speaker 1: Lane Kiffen at Old Miss, figured his eligibility was expired.
- 31:54Speaker 1: We heard that Lane Kiffin SoundBite about that that you
- 31:58Speaker 1: know about the eligibility they these players were under the
- 32:03Speaker 1: impression that they had no more eligibility remaining, and that's
- 32:08Speaker 1: why their next option is going to be to go
- 32:11Speaker 1: to the NFL. Failing that not making a team that
- 32:16Speaker 1: they were going to have a chance to go back.
- 32:20Speaker 1: So that's what this day Kalon Wright story has been
- 32:22Speaker 1: all about. And the Texter here says, if the definition
- 32:29Speaker 1: of a professional athlete is one who gets paid to
- 32:33Speaker 1: play a sport, then all Division one athletes are in
- 32:36Speaker 1: the minor leagues. Not that I agree, but that line keeps.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Getting more and more blurred, and.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I agree that it can get blurred. I think it's
- 32:48Speaker 1: important to be sure we understand at least how it's
- 32:54Speaker 1: legally defined. When the texter says the definition of a
- 32:59Speaker 1: professional athlete is one who gets paid to play a sport,
- 33:02Speaker 1: you're exactly right. The way that it is defined, however,
- 33:07Speaker 1: is that the student athlete is not being paid to
- 33:10Speaker 1: play a sport. The student athlete is being paid for
- 33:14Speaker 1: use of their own personal name, image, and likeness. Hence
- 33:19Speaker 1: the acronym we got all familiar with nil, name, image,
- 33:23Speaker 1: and likeness. Not that they're being paid to play football,
- 33:28Speaker 1: but that are being paid for the use of their name,
- 33:31Speaker 1: their image, their likeness, selling jerseys you know, at the
- 33:36Speaker 1: university shop or at the you know, at the co
- 33:40Speaker 1: op or wherever, going in finding a number sixteen manning
- 33:45Speaker 1: jersey at academy, name, image, likeness. Now, I totally understand
- 33:52Speaker 1: and do not disagree with you about the blurred lines.
- 33:56Speaker 1: When you say one who gets paid to play a sport,
- 33:59Speaker 1: then all D one athletes are in the minor leagues.
- 34:01Speaker 1: It's a good way to describe it. I think it's
- 34:05Speaker 1: if it's going to be like that, that that would
- 34:09Speaker 1: be the definition of a pro athlete. But where the
- 34:12Speaker 1: NCAA has its demarcation comes down a name, image and likeness.
- 34:18Speaker 1: You're being paid because the university is using your name
- 34:23Speaker 1: to put on a jersey, your face on whatever, a
- 34:28Speaker 1: T shirt or a cop or or something like that.
- 34:31Speaker 1: That's where this thrust and parry goes on, if you will,
- 34:37Speaker 1: with regard to whether they're being paid as a pro athlete.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Now I understand again the blurred lines, and we can
- 34:45Speaker 1: certainly discuss even probably not even have to debate, probably
- 34:51Speaker 1: be on the same side of the fence as this
- 34:53Speaker 1: on the fact that the aforementioned Parker Livingston pays certain
- 35:00Speaker 1: amount for his name, image, and likeness to play football
- 35:04Speaker 1: at the University of Texas. He came back after the
- 35:07Speaker 1: season and wanted a larger amount, to which the university
- 35:12Speaker 1: the football program agreed. Then he went to Oklahoma because
- 35:17Speaker 1: he was told they would give him more for that name,
- 35:20Speaker 1: image likeness. They offered him more. He went back to
- 35:23Speaker 1: the university, went back to Texas, and they said, we
- 35:26Speaker 1: already offered you the rays that you requested. We have
- 35:29Speaker 1: allocated our money in other areas now. So he winds
- 35:32Speaker 1: up going to Oklahoma, his choice, his decision on that.
- 35:38Speaker 1: But this is all supposedly done in the name of name,
- 35:42Speaker 1: image and likeness. That that's what it's all about when
- 35:47Speaker 1: in reality we know and I'm not picking on part
- 35:52Speaker 1: of Livingston. I mean Texas player at cam Coleman is
- 35:55Speaker 1: now on campus. He got the name, image and likeness
- 36:00Speaker 1: offer that suited him to come to the University of Texas.
- 36:06Speaker 1: We all know what that euphemistically means about. Like you said,
- 36:10Speaker 1: if they're getting paid to play a sport, then it's
- 36:14Speaker 1: minor leagues, some would say. Some would argue, in the
- 36:17Speaker 1: case of the Cleveland Browns, maybe it's not to minor league.
- 36:19Speaker 3: About coming back and playing.
- 36:22Speaker 4: College football from the city that brought you major league
- 36:25Speaker 4: on the baseball side.
- 36:26Speaker 1: And Deshaun Watson as their starting quarterback has was announced
- 36:30Speaker 1: this morning. Oh, brother, Deshaun Watson announced as the starting
- 36:35Speaker 1: quarterback at the Cleveland Browns.
- 36:36Speaker 3: That was announced this morning.
- 36:39Speaker 4: So and we've got people in this building giving up
- 36:41Speaker 4: on their own NFC East teams. Myself and the former
- 36:44Speaker 4: producer Cameron Parker included, imagine being a Browns fan.
- 36:48Speaker 1: How difficult would that be? Look, we if and this
- 36:53Speaker 1: gets us off track from the daycon Riot thing, but
- 36:55Speaker 1: that's okay. I've said this before that if you are
- 37:03Speaker 1: an ardent fan of a pro sports team, well, we'll
- 37:07Speaker 1: come back to college in a moment. But if you're
- 37:09Speaker 1: an ardent fan of a pro sports team, you're probably no, no,
- 37:16Speaker 1: not probably.
- 37:17Speaker 2: There's no doubt.
- 37:20Speaker 1: That you have experienced in your lifetime, especially if you're
- 37:26Speaker 1: beyond say thirty five or whatever. But it doesn't have
- 37:31Speaker 1: to be that way. I'm just saying, especially more anguish
- 37:37Speaker 1: than elation. As a sports fan. You can pick out,
- 37:42Speaker 1: you can line item some examples. If you were a
- 37:45Speaker 1: Patriots fan in the first decade of the twenty first century,
- 37:49Speaker 1: you had very little to be displeased about. Really even
- 37:52Speaker 1: the first couple of decades, very little, but there were
- 37:55Speaker 1: still some years.
- 37:57Speaker 2: I mean, I hear. I know.
- 37:59Speaker 1: A good friend mind is John Rook, who is a
- 38:02Speaker 1: play by play voice of the Providence Friars. He's also
- 38:05Speaker 1: the public address announcer for the New England Patriots. John
- 38:08Speaker 1: is a graduate of the University of Texas, by the way,
- 38:11Speaker 1: started off its broadcast career down here in the state
- 38:14Speaker 1: before he went back to his native New England. And
- 38:17Speaker 1: John said, you know, as thrilling as it's been to
- 38:23Speaker 1: be around the Patriots. And as we talked about this
- 38:25Speaker 1: at the Sportscaster Awards, one year, and he said, as
- 38:33Speaker 1: cool as it's been. He said, there were years when
- 38:35Speaker 1: there was a lot of English for Patriot fans. And
- 38:38Speaker 1: I'm not talking about pre Belichick, Tom Brady. I mean
- 38:41Speaker 1: that has its own decades of misery.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:46Speaker 1: They never won an AFL title, got to one AFL
- 38:48Speaker 1: Championship game and got blown out by the Chargers fifty
- 38:51Speaker 1: one to ten in nineteen sixty three. They were a
- 38:54Speaker 1: wild card team in eighty five and made it to
- 38:57Speaker 1: the Super Bowl and got blown out the Bears forty
- 39:01Speaker 1: six to ten in Super Bowl twenty. The fridge, yes,
- 39:04Speaker 1: Walter Payton, the whole bet, yes, Jim McMahon. Super Bowl
- 39:08Speaker 1: shuffled a little bit, then the Patriots made it, I
- 39:12Speaker 1: guess with Drew Bledsiel quarterback when the lost to the
- 39:14Speaker 1: Packers and Brett Farv in the Super Bowl. So the
- 39:17Speaker 1: productive years were few and far between until the arrival
- 39:21Speaker 1: of Belichick and Brady and all that. But even in
- 39:24Speaker 1: that period, he said, there were years of anguish. The
- 39:27Speaker 1: thing that's always going to stick with them is that
- 39:28Speaker 1: two thousand and seven season when they're eighteen and oh
- 39:32Speaker 1: going into Super Bowl. I think it was forty two
- 39:35Speaker 1: going in the Super Bowl and Eli Manning and the Patriots,
- 39:38Speaker 1: you know, and they beat him by Eli Manning and
- 39:40Speaker 1: the Giants beat the Patriots.
- 39:41Speaker 5: The old headline eighteen and no.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Yeah, So that still sticks in the crawl of a
- 39:48Speaker 1: lot of Patriots fans, even with all the Super Bowl wins.
- 39:50Speaker 5: Sticks to the helmet, specifically.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Ah David Tyree.
- 39:53Speaker 3: Yes.
- 39:57Speaker 1: But other than those examples, most people have experienced more
- 40:02Speaker 1: anguish than elation. If you're a pro sports fan, I mean,
- 40:07Speaker 1: I'm I'm a fan of the Dodgers, and obviously I'm
- 40:10Speaker 1: enjoying the greatest period in their franchise history right now,
- 40:13Speaker 1: two in a row, trying to go for three in
- 40:14Speaker 1: a row, and they may or may not get it
- 40:16Speaker 1: or whatever.
- 40:17Speaker 2: But they didn't win a World Series.
- 40:19Speaker 1: For thirty two years, from the time I was twenty
- 40:21Speaker 1: eight until the time I was sixty, they did not
- 40:23Speaker 1: win a World Series. So I have plenty of miserable
- 40:27Speaker 1: years and playoff shortcomings and things like that.
- 40:31Speaker 4: I'm sure these days people are like, yeah, yeah, Dodger
- 40:34Speaker 4: fan complaining, But you're like, no, I've I've got the
- 40:37Speaker 4: scars A bunch of receipts here.
- 40:39Speaker 5: Yeah, two generations of waiting and.
- 40:44Speaker 1: If you're a Braves fan. The Braves won it all
- 40:47Speaker 1: finally in ninety five in Atlanta. They won one world title.
- 40:50Speaker 1: When they were the Boston Braves in nineteen fourteen, they
- 40:52Speaker 1: won one world title, and then there when they were
- 40:54Speaker 1: the Milwaukee Braves in nineteen fifty seven, and then they
- 40:57Speaker 1: didn't win another one until they were Atlanta Braised in
- 40:59Speaker 1: nineteen ninety one five, and then didn't win another one
- 41:02Speaker 1: until twenty twenty two.
- 41:05Speaker 3: Or twenty twenty one, twenty twenty one, so.
- 41:11Speaker 2: They'd have lots of Yankee fans.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Yankees won more World Series than any other franchise twenty
- 41:16Speaker 1: seven and they've been sitting on twenty seven since two
- 41:19Speaker 1: thousand and nine, so it's been seventeen years since the
- 41:24Speaker 1: Yankees have won.
- 41:24Speaker 3: The World Series.
- 41:25Speaker 5: Yankee fans in my generation are frustrated.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, because they weren't around for a lot of
- 41:32Speaker 1: that stuff. They weren't around for the three Peete or
- 41:35Speaker 1: or that very little recollection of the three peat ninety nine,
- 41:39Speaker 1: ninety eight through two thousand, which followed by the loss
- 41:42Speaker 1: to the Diamondbacks in one and then they had a
- 41:45Speaker 1: loss to the Marlins and three you know, lost to
- 41:49Speaker 1: World Series that they were favored to win in So
- 41:53Speaker 1: my point is is that in all measure pro sports,
- 41:56Speaker 1: there's going to be more anguish than the resolation. And
- 42:00Speaker 1: I will add that that goes through to a lot
- 42:02Speaker 1: of fans of college sports teams. When Texas won the
- 42:07Speaker 1: national title in football in two thousand and five, my
- 42:10Speaker 1: call at the end, I said, a championship thirty five
- 42:15Speaker 1: years in the waiting, eight years in the building under
- 42:17Speaker 1: Bac Brown. It was thirty five years. It's been twenty
- 42:20Speaker 1: one since then. So yes, logrun fans are anxious about that.
- 42:26Speaker 1: There's other programs that are anxious. Heck, Greg Sankie's probably
- 42:30Speaker 1: getting a little bit antsy there with three straight wins
- 42:32Speaker 1: by the Big Ten, right, that's happening.
- 42:35Speaker 5: Eight ten's talking a lot of smack this offseason.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Hey, they have scoreboard right now.
- 42:40Speaker 5: AP voters not giving the SEC a lot of respect.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Big ten has scoreboard. In fact, there was a piece
- 42:45Speaker 1: in the Athletica read this morning about if they did
- 42:48Speaker 1: kind of like how the the SEC and the ACC
- 42:52Speaker 1: would do that basketball challenge. What would happen if they
- 42:56Speaker 1: had that for football and they had two riders to
- 42:59Speaker 1: do a one?
- 42:59Speaker 2: Right?
- 43:00Speaker 1: Had it ten to six big ten the other head
- 43:04Speaker 1: at nine to seven sec.
- 43:07Speaker 5: Very productive exercise, clearly.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Right, So they're like Ohio State against Georgia, at Texas
- 43:12Speaker 1: against Oregon. Both of them had Ohio State winning. Both
- 43:15Speaker 1: of them had Oregon winning beating Texas. So in other words,
- 43:21Speaker 1: they've got scoreboard right now. So they're going to do
- 43:23Speaker 1: they have the right to chirp. I suppose with regard
- 43:26Speaker 1: to that, all right, coming up more to hear from
- 43:30Speaker 1: Sark and from Brian chotmammer when we continue on thirteen
- 43:33Speaker 1: under the zone. This number is right smack dab in
- 43:45Speaker 1: the middle of the medley on the B side of
- 43:47Speaker 1: Abbey Road. It feels wrong to start with it right now,
- 43:49Speaker 1: just right now, you just died right into polatine.
- 43:52Speaker 3: Tam off of that.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Okay, all right here on a Monday on thirteen hundred
- 43:56Speaker 1: the zone, we had a question. Like we said, we
- 43:59Speaker 1: all always offer up the talk back line to you.
- 44:03Speaker 1: All you do is reach us via the iHeartRadio app.
- 44:06Speaker 1: You search am thirteen under the zone and you push
- 44:09Speaker 1: that red bunt with a white microphone. You can leave
- 44:11Speaker 1: us a message like this, gentleman, did.
- 44:14Speaker 9: Hey, Greg, I understand a great complainity with what you're
- 44:17Speaker 9: saying about the NIL money. But the nimail money was
- 44:21Speaker 9: there before the university started getting this twenty million dollars
- 44:26Speaker 9: per team money too. And that's not for nil, now,
- 44:29Speaker 9: is it. I mean, if you could clarify that, I surely.
- 44:31Speaker 3: Would appreciate it.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Sure that had no Yeah, that had to do with
- 44:35Speaker 1: a house settlement there on the money that was being
- 44:38Speaker 1: So that's you know, what that's turned out to be
- 44:41Speaker 1: is more of a guidepost really for athletic programs. There
- 44:44Speaker 1: are many many college programs spending a lot more than
- 44:50Speaker 1: that with regard to NIL.
- 44:52Speaker 4: And that's what folks are calling for more strict regulation
- 44:57Speaker 4: of in part with this Save or Protect College Sports
- 45:00Speaker 4: Act that keeps you know, spinning its wheels on Capitol Hill.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Right right, And that's where it is right now. Here's
- 45:07Speaker 1: some more from Sark. First of all, was asked about
- 45:08Speaker 1: the symmetry and maybe this goes a little bit to
- 45:11Speaker 1: what the text was asked about with regard to the
- 45:13Speaker 1: offense and the struggle and the scrimmage on Saturday. Sark
- 45:17Speaker 1: here on the symmetry of the offensive line and the
- 45:19Speaker 1: concerns that he has over the continuity that they as
- 45:24Speaker 1: a unit on the offensive line have I.
- 45:26Speaker 7: Mean, I would I would agree with you on that
- 45:29Speaker 7: that it's always great when you have that continuity for
- 45:33Speaker 7: an entirety of training camp. But I also know that
- 45:38Speaker 7: like Andre Kojo's getting some invaluable reps at left tackle
- 45:42Speaker 7: right now, and if he goes into the season, which
- 45:45Speaker 7: it's looking like as our third tackle, the fact that
- 45:48Speaker 7: he's getting.
- 45:48Speaker 8: These quality reps right now with the ones.
- 45:53Speaker 7: And having a block you know, calling and Lance and
- 45:56Speaker 7: Xena and these guys and you know, Rahem and Bile's
- 45:59Speaker 7: coming off the edge, I think those are those are
- 46:00Speaker 7: great opportunities for him. You know, naturally at left guard,
- 46:05Speaker 7: you know, it's been a pretty healthy competition. So the
- 46:08Speaker 7: idea that you know, Dylan and Jackson are getting you know,
- 46:11Speaker 7: one reps there at left guard.
- 46:13Speaker 8: Lawrence will be back Monday, and we.
- 46:16Speaker 7: Could we have had him back and and and and
- 46:19Speaker 7: kind of held him some. Sure, but my idea was
- 46:22Speaker 7: let's just rest him completely, Let's get him, let's get
- 46:24Speaker 7: him rehab and then get him back full steam on Monday.
- 46:28Speaker 7: And Trevor, I think is making really good progress. So
- 46:30Speaker 7: I do think we're going to get the left side back,
- 46:33Speaker 7: But on the same token, I do think these reps
- 46:36Speaker 7: are good for these guys because knock on wood, I
- 46:38Speaker 7: don't know if, when, what, how when injuries might occur
- 46:41Speaker 7: in season, and the fact that these guys are getting
- 46:44Speaker 7: some reps with our ones against high level defenders, I
- 46:47Speaker 7: think is good for them preparing them for the season.
- 46:51Speaker 8: So again, I'm not naive.
- 46:52Speaker 7: I would love to have, you know, continuity, five guys
- 46:55Speaker 7: all training camp long.
- 46:57Speaker 8: I don't know how realistic that is.
- 46:58Speaker 7: That guys aren't going to be down on some but
- 47:01Speaker 7: at some point we're gonna want them all back and
- 47:03Speaker 7: we're gonna want them all working well together. And I
- 47:06Speaker 7: think part of that will start Monday, when when we
- 47:08Speaker 7: get Lawrence back on Monday, and then we'll see what
- 47:10Speaker 7: when we can get Trevor back.
- 47:11Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Next, ask to elaborate on ty Anthony
- 47:15Speaker 1: Smith's departure from the team or or you know, at
- 47:20Speaker 1: this point being dismissed from the team.
- 47:22Speaker 7: He was dismissed conduct detrimental of the team, and that
- 47:26Speaker 7: that's just what it is. I did. I didn't like it.
- 47:29Speaker 7: It's not it's an unfortunate situation, you know, for him individually,
- 47:34Speaker 7: I again, I hate that for us as a team.
- 47:38Speaker 7: I hate that he's a quality player. But but I
- 47:41Speaker 7: have to think about the team first from from the
- 47:44Speaker 7: linebacker perspective. You know, when you when you really think
- 47:46Speaker 7: about it and you think about the amount of nickel
- 47:49Speaker 7: you really play in season and what that looks like,
- 47:54Speaker 7: you know, you're thinking about two backers the majority of
- 47:56Speaker 7: time on the field. You want as many healthy, good
- 47:59Speaker 7: players as you can have at every position, right, But
- 48:02Speaker 7: but part of this is, you know, we recruit some
- 48:05Speaker 7: high level people too, and how fast can we get
- 48:08Speaker 7: them ready to go? And we've got three really good
- 48:10Speaker 7: young players and Cozy Ak Paula had a great interception
- 48:13Speaker 7: today that probably returned.
- 48:14Speaker 8: For a touchdown. So those guys are coming.
- 48:17Speaker 7: But but we also know we've got great experience and
- 48:20Speaker 7: in Crier and Biles and and Brad Spence is an
- 48:23Speaker 7: experienced guy who gives us a position flex and versatility.
- 48:28Speaker 8: But guys are going to have to grow into into.
- 48:30Speaker 7: Certain roles and then you know, I think, I think,
- 48:33Speaker 7: you know, when we do want to go into our
- 48:34Speaker 7: base package, that we've got the right people on the field,
- 48:37Speaker 7: whether how many how many snaps of game that really
- 48:40Speaker 7: is depending on the opponent.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Next, he was asked about another guy, and this is
- 48:45Speaker 1: part of the reason ultimately, with the departure of ty
- 48:49Speaker 1: Anthony Smith is the guy who kind of supplanted him
- 48:52Speaker 1: as the starter at that linebacker spot, and that's the
- 48:55Speaker 1: Florida State trans for Justin Cryer, and Stargar's very happy
- 48:59Speaker 1: with the progress he should.
- 49:00Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, I think one thing, you know, every player,
- 49:04Speaker 7: you know, when they come into our program, whether they're
- 49:07Speaker 7: transfers or freshmen, whatever, that looks like everybody's kind of
- 49:12Speaker 7: path and journey is always a little bit different than others.
- 49:16Speaker 7: I will say this about Justin Kryer. This guy is
- 49:19Speaker 7: doing everything in his power to maximize this opportunity this
- 49:24Speaker 7: season for his personal growth and success, but also to
- 49:29Speaker 7: be part of a championship caliber team. And you can
- 49:32Speaker 7: feel it in the way that he walks into the
- 49:35Speaker 7: building every single day, his intent and meetings, his intent
- 49:39Speaker 7: and culture Wednesdays, his intent and walkthroughs, his ability to
- 49:43Speaker 7: communicate coach muss Champs defense, the way he practices, the
- 49:51Speaker 7: level of intensity that he plays at. And I think
- 49:55Speaker 7: that's why his teammates raise so much about him. This
- 49:59Speaker 7: guy has squeezed seeing every ounce of juice that he
- 50:02Speaker 7: can out of this opportunity to be at Texas. Uh,
- 50:05Speaker 7: and it's it's greatly appreciated, and I think it serves
- 50:08Speaker 7: as a great model for a lot of the other transfers.
- 50:11Speaker 7: Like this guy didn't wait and feel it, feel it
- 50:14Speaker 7: out to like where do I fit in. He's gone
- 50:16Speaker 7: for it, and I think he's reaping the benefits of it.
- 50:19Speaker 7: He's playing at a high level for.
- 50:21Speaker 8: Us right now.
- 50:21Speaker 1: Next, Stark was asked about arch banning as he is
- 50:24Speaker 1: after every practice and and uh, the the growth that
- 50:28Speaker 1: he has shown, not only you know, through the scrimmages,
- 50:30Speaker 1: but also throughout the course of the spring, end of
- 50:33Speaker 1: the summer, in the fall camp.
- 50:35Speaker 7: I thought he had a really good week of practice.
- 50:37Speaker 7: I mean there was you know, especially yesterday Friday. We
- 50:42Speaker 7: did a bunch of situational stuff, move the field. I
- 50:44Speaker 7: thought he was I thought he played very efficiently. I
- 50:48Speaker 7: felt like today, similar to last week, at the start,
- 50:52Speaker 7: a little bit ineffishent you know, I feel like he
- 50:55Speaker 7: could be he could be better, But I love the
- 50:57Speaker 7: way that he finished. I mean to to touchdown was
- 51:00Speaker 7: there at the end in a highly competitive situation. Touchdown
- 51:04Speaker 7: to wingo touchdown to Mosley, and so you know, I
- 51:07Speaker 7: think he played I don't know, fifty or so fifty
- 51:10Speaker 7: some odd snaps today close to if not more, you know,
- 51:15Speaker 7: and had a few touchdown passes. You know, I think
- 51:18Speaker 7: there's some opportunities in there when he watches a tape,
- 51:20Speaker 7: scrimmage is always hard, where maybe he can use his
- 51:22Speaker 7: legs more. And I think we all know the value
- 51:25Speaker 7: of him using those legs, especially in some of those
- 51:27Speaker 7: third down scenarios, fourth down even for that matter. But again,
- 51:33Speaker 7: I was kind of thinking about this walking up to
- 51:36Speaker 7: the press conference, and Arch is no different than the
- 51:38Speaker 7: wide outs of the lineman or the dbs, the linebackers.
- 51:41Speaker 8: I always have to remind myself that, you.
- 51:44Speaker 7: Know, we're nearly three weeks into camp and we're we're
- 51:48Speaker 7: a little fatigued. I'll be I'll be quite frank. You
- 51:50Speaker 7: know that we're working hard, and those guys are working hard,
- 51:53Speaker 7: and you could feel a little a little physical fatigue
- 51:57Speaker 7: and maybe a little mental fatigue. You know, I felt
- 51:59Speaker 7: a little bit from Arch today, and that's that's not
- 52:02Speaker 7: that's not uncommon, and that's you know, we're working hard,
- 52:05Speaker 7: we're in the heat, we're pushing ourselves. We'll obviously switch
- 52:08Speaker 7: gears this coming week to more of a mock week.
- 52:12Speaker 7: School starts Monday. We'll be exclusively practicing in the morning.
- 52:15Speaker 7: We'll treat it like a game week, and so we'll
- 52:17Speaker 7: find that rhythm and routine of you know, base install,
- 52:21Speaker 7: third down, install, red area, two minutes, so on and
- 52:23Speaker 7: so forth throughout the week while the mock game Saturday,
- 52:26Speaker 7: then we'll do it again.
- 52:26Speaker 8: Texas State Week.
- 52:27Speaker 7: So I think it's important for us as a staff
- 52:30Speaker 7: this week to get legs back, get guys a little
- 52:33Speaker 7: bit more fresh physically, a little bit more fresh mentally.
- 52:37Speaker 8: And I'm I know I'm answering a question.
- 52:38Speaker 7: About arch but I think arch Is is a great
- 52:40Speaker 7: kind of microcosm of the team that you could feel
- 52:44Speaker 7: a little bit of that today to where you know,
- 52:46Speaker 7: I think that that we can be a little more energized,
- 52:48Speaker 7: a little more sharp. I think he can too, and
- 52:52Speaker 7: that that'll that'll lend itself to a little bit more
- 52:54Speaker 7: of a complete positive performance. There was a lot of
- 52:57Speaker 7: positive things today, but we're always strying having for a
- 53:00Speaker 7: complete positive performance.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Sark was also asked about the types of practice the
- 53:05Speaker 1: running and would he like to see the NFL style
- 53:08Speaker 1: joint practices like what the Cowboys did with the Saints
- 53:11Speaker 1: minus the fisticov uh and uh or even preseason games.
- 53:16Speaker 7: I surely real don't want joint practices because I think
- 53:19Speaker 7: it's disgusting when I turn on ESPN every night and
- 53:22Speaker 7: I watch fights from every joint practice. You know, it's
- 53:24Speaker 7: like the players know if we get in a fight,
- 53:26Speaker 7: they'll stop practice and so we get to go home.
- 53:28Speaker 8: That's what it looks like in the NFL to me.
- 53:30Speaker 8: So that's my soapbox on that one.
- 53:32Speaker 7: You guys can write that however you want. Is there
- 53:36Speaker 7: is there room for a exhibition or preseason game?
- 53:39Speaker 3: You know?
- 53:40Speaker 1: Uh?
- 53:41Speaker 7: Maybe you know with officials and do the whole thing.
- 53:43Speaker 7: And I think the majority of us in those types
- 53:47Speaker 7: of games probably would hold a lot of our elite
- 53:51Speaker 7: type players, but it would be a serve as a
- 53:54Speaker 7: great opportunity for a lot of the younger guys to
- 53:56Speaker 7: be in more game like settings. We try to create
- 53:59Speaker 7: those in scrimmage forms, but it wouldn't be bad to
- 54:01Speaker 7: be able to create some of those settings for your
- 54:03Speaker 7: younger players just to get used to what a game
- 54:06Speaker 7: feels like rather than just relying on that first ball
- 54:10Speaker 7: game when you when you run out of the tunnel,
- 54:12Speaker 7: and here we go. We got to go play in
- 54:13Speaker 7: front of one hundred and five thousand people, and you
- 54:16Speaker 7: hope the guy lines upright and hope he gets the
- 54:18Speaker 7: right check on defense, and we don't blow coverages and
- 54:21Speaker 7: we run the right routes right, And so I do
- 54:23Speaker 7: think there may be something to that.
- 54:25Speaker 8: I would say this, though, we got a.
- 54:27Speaker 7: Hell of a lot more issues in college football going
- 54:29Speaker 7: on right now than that, So I think we should
- 54:31Speaker 7: focus on what's right in front of us. Then you know,
- 54:34Speaker 7: our scrimmages are okay for right now, We'll be.
- 54:36Speaker 1: All right, Yeah, all right. We're gonna hear more from
- 54:39Speaker 1: sar coming up next hour. Well, here's some from Ryan
- 54:42Speaker 1: Shannamber next on thirteen under the Zone, Jake Carmin the
- 54:47Speaker 1: prouser getting nearly chump on yacht rock here. Well, maybe
- 54:51Speaker 1: come back from the player that's right in the wheelhouse
- 54:56Speaker 1: at right.
- 54:57Speaker 5: Hey, how about the.
- 54:59Speaker 4: Sentiment though, I mean players coming back to schools all
- 55:03Speaker 4: across the country.
- 55:04Speaker 5: You got more and more guys say they're going to
- 55:06Speaker 5: go back.
- 55:06Speaker 2: To college, no doubt about it.
- 55:08Speaker 1: Not so with those Dallas Cowboys getting ready for the
- 55:11Speaker 1: coming season. Coming off the Saturday night win over the
- 55:16Speaker 1: Arizona Cardinals, Brian shot Memmer was asked about how important
- 55:20Speaker 1: is it for guys to be playing in preseason and
- 55:22Speaker 1: winning in preseason?
- 55:24Speaker 10: Yeah, I think, you know, the wins are great. I've
- 55:28Speaker 10: always thought, because my dad said it, the preseason record
- 55:32Speaker 10: is never remembered. But I think what we've show in
- 55:35Speaker 10: the last two games is there's a play style about
- 55:37Speaker 10: this team, whoever's in the game, and that's one of physicality, effort,
- 55:42Speaker 10: playing together.
- 55:43Speaker 11: And I do think that we played that.
- 55:45Speaker 10: Way tonight for really four quarters, and I'm proud of
- 55:49Speaker 10: guys for that.
- 55:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good.
- 55:51Speaker 3: You know.
- 55:53Speaker 1: I mentioned the other day when the Texans had the
- 55:54Speaker 1: big lead, then the Raiders came back and won the game.
- 55:58Speaker 1: That was your classic preseason had another one last night.
- 56:00Speaker 1: By the way, if anybody saw the Seahawks and Titans,
- 56:03Speaker 1: Seahawks pretty much controlled the first half and then the
- 56:07Speaker 1: Titans backups were better than the sea Hawks backups in
- 56:11Speaker 1: won the game.
- 56:11Speaker 3: So anyway that happens all that.
- 56:14Speaker 1: How about his thoughts on the quarterback situation? Now, it
- 56:17Speaker 1: looked like those of us who were watching on Saturday,
- 56:21Speaker 1: it looked like Joe Milton took command of the race
- 56:26Speaker 1: for the backup spot behind Dak Prescott, ahead of Sam Howe.
- 56:29Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, you know again, I think you know,
- 56:32Speaker 10: Joe's put together two really really good halfs. You know,
- 56:36Speaker 10: Sam really made one mistake, you know, down in the
- 56:38Speaker 10: red zone. You know, kind of got fooled on one
- 56:40Speaker 10: and turned it over. That can't happen. But you know
- 56:42Speaker 10: this is long from over and uh, you know, going
- 56:45Speaker 10: back to Frisco thankfully and get a chance to be
- 56:48Speaker 10: home and put some more training camp days in. But uh,
- 56:53Speaker 10: got to give Joe's credit, he's played really well the
- 56:55Speaker 10: last two games. But we have a lot of conferences
- 56:57Speaker 10: Sam as well.
- 56:57Speaker 1: Yeah, Milton also in a long past that there's that
- 57:00Speaker 1: man again, Camden Brown.
- 57:02Speaker 10: And how about the shot these thoughts on that, Yeah,
- 57:05Speaker 10: I think you know, it's funny because we you know,
- 57:07Speaker 10: we threw the double move to Mingo off of a
- 57:10Speaker 10: timeout and that was kind of the last reminder that
- 57:12Speaker 10: Steve Shimko gave him as Hey, you know, put good
- 57:14Speaker 10: air on it.
- 57:15Speaker 11: And Joe's been doing that.
- 57:16Speaker 10: I mean, he's just you know, the fade to cam
- 57:18Speaker 10: Brown last game, you know, under duress. You know, this
- 57:22Speaker 10: game is about, you know, control of the RPMs of
- 57:24Speaker 10: you of the football and throw it with different speeds
- 57:27Speaker 10: and touches, and he's done that at a really high level.
- 57:30Speaker 10: But I thought the scramble to his left to Cam
- 57:33Speaker 10: was a was a big play as well.
- 57:34Speaker 11: And then you know, was able to get in with
- 57:35Speaker 11: his legs.
- 57:36Speaker 10: So the touchdown to the lak, you know, stepped up
- 57:37Speaker 10: in the pocket, you know, run into his left just
- 57:39Speaker 10: kind of just from me to you a little bit,
- 57:41Speaker 10: you know, and he just kind of, you know, took
- 57:43Speaker 10: a little.
- 57:43Speaker 11: Something off and gave him a leak a chance to
- 57:44Speaker 11: catch him and go.
- 57:46Speaker 1: So really proud of him. Okay, all right. Then there's
- 57:49Speaker 1: that battle for that backup running back spot, and that
- 57:52Speaker 1: includes Jayden Blue, who had kind of a little bit
- 57:54Speaker 1: of a Sports Center move there when he hurtled one
- 57:57Speaker 1: would be tackler there.
- 57:58Speaker 10: But his thoughts on Blue, Yeah, we wanted to see him.
- 58:01Speaker 10: He always been banged up a little bit. He had
- 58:02Speaker 10: a shoulder, and we wanted to see how you would do.
- 58:05Speaker 10: But I thought, again, I want to see the film,
- 58:06Speaker 10: but I thought he ran hard and we wanted to
- 58:08Speaker 10: lean on him early in the third quarter and see
- 58:10Speaker 10: how he did. But you know, all in all, I
- 58:12Speaker 10: thought he ran well, had some really nice runs, a
- 58:14Speaker 10: couple eleven twelve yards. I thought they were really good.
- 58:17Speaker 10: But he ran physically, which I think is important.
- 58:21Speaker 1: Which is important when you're trying to bounce back from
- 58:23Speaker 1: injury and dealing with the competition that Blues involved with.
- 58:27Speaker 10: Yeah, I think I think he feels the competition. I
- 58:30Speaker 10: think he feels the fact that this is a deep room.
- 58:33Speaker 10: I mean, you know, I can't step up to a
- 58:36Speaker 10: podium and answer a question about the running back room
- 58:38Speaker 10: without mentioning Izzy.
- 58:39Speaker 3: I mean.
- 58:39Speaker 10: And then film Offa has a touchdown and Malik is
- 58:42Speaker 10: what he is and Jaden you know, so these guys
- 58:44Speaker 10: got to go. I mean, you know, and it's a
- 58:48Speaker 10: it's been fun for us to watch him, you know,
- 58:49Speaker 10: in past protection. But yeah, you don't practice. It's hard
- 58:53Speaker 10: to go in there and perform the way he did.
- 58:55Speaker 10: So that's progression for him and something that he should
- 58:58Speaker 10: take a lot of pride in.
- 58:59Speaker 1: Okay, all right, and then Jonathan Bingo caught a big
- 59:03Speaker 1: touchdown pass.
- 59:04Speaker 2: He had another one of those young cowboy receivers.
- 59:07Speaker 10: Yeah, he's playing with so much confidence. You know, Calvin
- 59:10Speaker 10: and each week in and out, you know, beating man
- 59:14Speaker 10: to man. The double move was awesome. But the confidence
- 59:17Speaker 10: is real and he knows he belongs and he knows
- 59:20Speaker 10: that he can, you know, make plays. But you know,
- 59:24Speaker 10: he's back returning kicks, he's making tackles on special teams.
- 59:27Speaker 11: Like he's a football player.
- 59:29Speaker 10: And I don't think I could have said that about
- 59:30Speaker 10: him when we got him, you know, two years ago
- 59:32Speaker 10: or whatever it was.
- 59:33Speaker 11: But he made no mistakes. He is a damn good
- 59:35Speaker 11: football player.
- 59:36Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Well, here's some more from Shotty next hour,
- 59:41Speaker 1: and and that you know, also being packaged with the
- 59:44Speaker 1: fact that we're going to visit with Roshawn Johnson next
- 59:47Speaker 1: hour as well, who, of course now is getting ready
- 59:50Speaker 1: to start his fourth season with the Chicago Bears after
- 59:54Speaker 1: you know, his time at the University of Texas. All right,
- 59:58Speaker 1: coming up next, we'll be back to wrap up our
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: number two of the program here on sports Radio AM
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone of the iHeartRadio app third and
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: final hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone with you on a Monday afternoon. Hey,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: if you've done it five, you're on the home stretch.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: Even if you've done at six, at least you're on
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: the backside of the first day of the work week.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us here. We're gonna hear
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: some more here coming up in just a moment from
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: Long One's head coach Steve Sarkasian.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: We'll do that.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: Also some more from Ryan Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach Dallas,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: coming off the win against the Arizona Cardinals. Do you know,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: Jay Carmon, the last time the Cowboys started a preseason
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: with a two and oh mark? Even though you didn't
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: grow up a Cowboys fan, which would you happen to
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: know that? A little historical tidbit, No, it is. It
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: can't be that long ago.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Years.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: Wow, it's been nineteen years since they started two and
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: oh in the preseason. The last time it happened was
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: two thousand and seven. And what happened that year? I
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: think they started eight and oh. They started off it.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: They were being coached by Wade Phillips, won the NFC
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: East and then got upset late in the game by
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Eli Manning and the Giants, who went on to win
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: the Super Bowl and ruined the Patriots. Unbeaten start that's
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: the last time the Cowboys started too, and oh in
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: the preseason, how about that?
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: So maybe it's good things.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: Everything that I'm hearing from Cowboys camp is that there's
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: a different feel, there's a different mindset, all that other
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: kind of stuff.
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: There's that.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: We'll get back to that a little bit later.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Let's cut the Longhorns, because coming up in a few minutes,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: we're gonna visit with a lifetime long horn, Rosehawn Johnson,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: the former Law one running back who is getting ready
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: to start his four season with the Chicago Bears, and
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Row will be with us and we'll ask him about
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: going into the into his fourth season. We'll ask him also,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: you're gonna you're gonna hear a SoundBite from sark here
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: where he invokes the name Roshan Johnson. We'll ask him
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: a little bit about that and about the initiative that
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: he really backs and believes in as well. If you
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: haven't heard about this brain vault, I think we'll we'll
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: let you hear and let him explain what that's all
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: about as well. All right, as I mentioned the long Worns,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: of course, come off the scrimmage on Saturday, and we've
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: already heard some things from Sark about the scrimmage, what
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: he liked, what he didn't like, and as they get
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: ready and heading down the home stretch of fall camp.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: But one of the guys who is starting to earn
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: some trust with Sark and this team on that offensive
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: front of Andre Kojo, Yeah.
- 1:03:00Speaker 8: I think, I think, I don't.
- 1:03:02Speaker 7: I don't want to say people forget, but you know,
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: just as a reminder, you know, a year ago, this
- 1:03:07Speaker 7: guy's competing to be our starting right tackle with Brandon
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: Baker and and and he was, and he was, and
- 1:03:12Speaker 7: he's doing well, and you know, then he gets injured,
- 1:03:16Speaker 7: which was unfortunate, and you know, it's a long road
- 1:03:19Speaker 7: back from that injury. And so the fact that you
- 1:03:22Speaker 7: know he worked the way that he worked, he you know,
- 1:03:24Speaker 7: he's got his weight to where you know, he's a
- 1:03:26Speaker 7: big man, but he he's lying on his.
- 1:03:28Speaker 8: Feet, he can move, he's explosive.
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: I think now the biggest thing that he learned coming
- 1:03:33Speaker 7: out of today is the mental and physical conditioning you
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: have to have to do it for fifty sixty seventy
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: snaps consistently, especially against high caliber, high level players that
- 1:03:47Speaker 7: that you know he's having to go against and block,
- 1:03:49Speaker 7: you know, every single play, and so again I think
- 1:03:52Speaker 7: he's making you know, incremental progress each day.
- 1:03:54Speaker 8: I thought he's had a good week of practice.
- 1:03:57Speaker 7: You know, I would I would argue there was two
- 1:03:59Speaker 7: or three days this week you didn't notice that it
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: was him at left tackle, And that's a great thing
- 1:04:04Speaker 7: as an offensive lineman. When you're not noticing who it is,
- 1:04:07Speaker 7: that just means that guy's doing his job really well. So, hey,
- 1:04:10Speaker 7: he's got still got room to grow and still can
- 1:04:12Speaker 7: can continue to improve. But I have been I have
- 1:04:15Speaker 7: been pleased with his ability to step in at that position,
- 1:04:21Speaker 7: and I think it gives us confidence for the future
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: if something were to occur that he could step in
- 1:04:26Speaker 7: and play well for us.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: One of the other things that Sark was talking about
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: was the intensity that he wants to see for practice.
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: This was something he said this morning after media availability
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: about the importance of what he's looking for out of
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: his guys from say the examples that were set from
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: players who were here before they were.
- 1:04:48Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, I will say this, We've been practicing
- 1:04:51Speaker 7: really hard, Cedric Like, it's been physical, it's been tough.
- 1:04:57Speaker 7: They these guys like to practice and so you can
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: get a real sense and a feel of real speed,
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: what real speed looks like. Because we're practicing fast, we're
- 1:05:06Speaker 7: practicing hard, we're practicing physical. And when you don't right now,
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: you stand out. You know, it used to be the
- 1:05:14Speaker 7: other way around here we first got started. You know,
- 1:05:16Speaker 7: when demarga An Overshown or Roshawn Johnson practiced really hard,
- 1:05:20Speaker 7: they stood out because maybe not everybody else was. Now
- 1:05:24Speaker 7: everybody else goes really hard, and so when you're not,
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: you stand out the other way.
- 1:05:28Speaker 8: And so it's easy, it's easy to fix, it's easy
- 1:05:30Speaker 8: to rectify.
- 1:05:32Speaker 7: But I don't know necessarily that it's as difficult to
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: evaluate because of just the way these guys work in practice.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Which then brings us back to something that Sark was
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: talking about after the scrimmage on Saturday, about how important
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: it is for his players to prepare properly, not only
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: when they're on the practice field, but to prepare properly
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: for each practice.
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: I think the most practical thing is right their body, Okay,
- 1:06:00Speaker 7: and so you think about how are they fueling their
- 1:06:03Speaker 7: body right? What food are they putting in their body
- 1:06:06Speaker 7: for for this type of these types of conditions, what
- 1:06:10Speaker 7: type of what type of you know, electrolytes and water,
- 1:06:13Speaker 7: and how are they fueling their body from a hydration standpoint?
- 1:06:17Speaker 8: What does their sleep look like?
- 1:06:19Speaker 7: Right, And so you're trying to educate them on taking
- 1:06:22Speaker 7: care of their body from food, hydration, sleep.
- 1:06:26Speaker 8: I think that's the first part.
- 1:06:28Speaker 7: And if they do that, then they then they've kind
- 1:06:30Speaker 7: of fueled their body up with the right things to
- 1:06:32Speaker 7: then make sure they got a full tank of gas.
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: And that full take a gas isn't only physical, it's mental.
- 1:06:39Speaker 7: And when you when you when you feel fresh, when
- 1:06:41Speaker 7: you feel like you're hydrated, you've got you got the
- 1:06:44Speaker 7: right type of food in your system. You walk in
- 1:06:46Speaker 7: the building with a little different energy. And I think
- 1:06:48Speaker 7: that's what these elements require. They take an energy about
- 1:06:52Speaker 7: you individually and collectively to where you use the heat
- 1:06:57Speaker 7: to your advantage.
- 1:06:59Speaker 8: The heat should be our friend. We're used to it.
- 1:07:01Speaker 7: It's a it's an advantage to us if we use
- 1:07:04Speaker 7: it the right way.
- 1:07:05Speaker 8: How do you use it the right way?
- 1:07:06Speaker 7: You got to You got to prepare for it, and
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: you've got to prepare for it physically and mentally so
- 1:07:11Speaker 7: that we can absorb that heat and use it in
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: a way that is a positive for us.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: So coming out of the scrimmage, out of the things
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: that he liked and he didn't like, what did Sarta say?
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: It was the number one thing coming out of the
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: scrimmage that he wanted to see cleaned up from his team.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: Just one.
- 1:07:31Speaker 7: Let me get one, oh man, the ball. It's always
- 1:07:36Speaker 7: the ball. Like I can't I can't impress upon everybody enough.
- 1:07:40Speaker 7: And I know everybody wants some you know, intricate answer
- 1:07:45Speaker 7: about something. But I'll tell you it doesn't matter what
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: eleven guys are out there on offense. It doesn't matter
- 1:07:50Speaker 7: well eleven guys are out there on defense. If we
- 1:07:52Speaker 7: can possess the ball and if we can create turnovers,
- 1:07:56Speaker 7: we give ourselves an enormous chance to win the game.
- 1:08:00Speaker 8: The numbers just tell us.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: So.
- 1:08:04Speaker 7: I think in the SEC last year, if you won
- 1:08:06Speaker 7: the turnover battle, eighty percent of the time, you won
- 1:08:08Speaker 7: the game. Like, just think about that stat alone. If
- 1:08:12Speaker 7: you win the turnover battle in our conference eighty percent
- 1:08:15Speaker 7: of that you have an eighty percent chance to win
- 1:08:17Speaker 7: the game. I think the last time we lost a
- 1:08:21Speaker 7: game where we won the turnover battle was the alimable. Like,
- 1:08:27Speaker 7: just just put that into perspective. It's like, that's how
- 1:08:30Speaker 7: valuable the ball is. That's how valuable turnovers are. And
- 1:08:34Speaker 7: so walking out of today with four turnovers, I love
- 1:08:38Speaker 7: it from a defensive perspective. I hate it from an
- 1:08:40Speaker 7: offensive perspective, right, And that's that's this, Like you know,
- 1:08:44Speaker 7: tug of war you have as a head coach, because
- 1:08:46Speaker 7: I want us to continue to attack the ball and
- 1:08:49Speaker 7: put pressure on our offense to take care of it.
- 1:08:51Speaker 8: But I also know, man, we have got to protect
- 1:08:54Speaker 8: that ball with our life.
- 1:08:56Speaker 7: It's it's two of the last three national champions. We're
- 1:09:00Speaker 7: number one in the country in turnover margin. To put
- 1:09:03Speaker 7: that into perspective too, So I'm just giving you some
- 1:09:05Speaker 7: sheer numbers that when you start talking about the value
- 1:09:10Speaker 7: of the ball and what it means to winning and
- 1:09:12Speaker 7: losing games. That's what's on my mind, probably more than
- 1:09:16Speaker 7: anything is is making sure that we take care of
- 1:09:18Speaker 7: it offensively and that we keep finding ways to generate
- 1:09:21Speaker 7: turnovers on defense.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: And then there's one other thing I want to I
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: wanted to reiterate.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: This is something we brought to you in a two
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: o'clock hour, and it was something that came from this
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: morning's media availability. By now you've you've you've probably especially
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: if you you know, watch Sports Center and seeing this
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: whole thing about Daiklon Wright being released by the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Daikwon White, right, played for Lane kiffinet Ole Miss and
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: now his intent is to transfer to LSU. Now, there's
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: a lot of things in play here. First of all,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: there is an SEC rule that prohibits players from inferring
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: intra conference in from one to the other. But this
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: is looked at, at least from their perspective de Kwon
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: Wright's camp and his agent, and I'm sure Lane given
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: as well differently, because he went to try out in
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: the NFL, didn't work out, was released. Therefore, he should
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: be able to return to college for his senior year.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: So that's where the debate is and where this ultimately
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: winds up down the road. We'll find out soon enough
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: from the SEC and from others as well. In the meantime,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: Sark was asked today for his thoughts on this. Is
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: it continuing what many have referred to as wild wild
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: West approach by schools? Is it a good thing? Is
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: it a bad thing for college football? Sark was asked
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: about that after today's practice.
- 1:10:50Speaker 7: I don't even know you know this stuff is we
- 1:10:54Speaker 7: are like changing every day right now. It feels like
- 1:10:58Speaker 7: almost every three hours, you know, there's a new message
- 1:11:02Speaker 7: from Commissioner Sankie about something or something that somebody's reporting
- 1:11:08Speaker 7: in the media that this is what might occur or
- 1:11:11Speaker 7: what's occurring. I think it's important for us here, especially
- 1:11:14Speaker 7: like we have a really good team, and focusing on
- 1:11:18Speaker 7: our team to me is paramount and the most important
- 1:11:21Speaker 7: thing right now. Anything auxiliary outside of that. I'm not
- 1:11:26Speaker 7: in so much of a rush to say, oh, let's
- 1:11:28Speaker 7: go do that now, or let's go do that now.
- 1:11:30Speaker 7: Like I like our team, if and or when, if
- 1:11:34Speaker 7: there's something that popped up to where we could upgrade it, great,
- 1:11:37Speaker 7: but we don't even know. Like today you can take
- 1:11:39Speaker 7: them tomorrow you can't. I don't know what's gonna happen.
- 1:11:42Speaker 7: And I don't even know if it's good or not.
- 1:11:43Speaker 7: I'll be honest with you, I don't know if it's
- 1:11:45Speaker 7: good because like for us, I know, we've got a
- 1:11:48Speaker 7: locker room full of guys who have been working together
- 1:11:50Speaker 7: and their connectivity is so good for the last eight months.
- 1:11:55Speaker 7: Is it worth Is it worth rocking that boat? You know,
- 1:11:58Speaker 7: by bringing somebody in that is it from me? With
- 1:12:00Speaker 7: your program, Cole was a little different. He's been with
- 1:12:03Speaker 7: our program for four years. He knows who we are,
- 1:12:05Speaker 7: he knows coach Flood, he knows.
- 1:12:06Speaker 8: Those guys in that room.
- 1:12:08Speaker 7: To bring in a true outsider and to think like
- 1:12:12Speaker 7: all of a sudden, he's gonna be our quarterback, like
- 1:12:14Speaker 7: I don't know how to do that, Like I wouldn't
- 1:12:16Speaker 7: know how to do that. And I get every situation
- 1:12:19Speaker 7: is a little bit different, and maybe there's better coaches
- 1:12:22Speaker 7: out there than us, you know, But I just think
- 1:12:24Speaker 7: it's a delicate situation. The powers that be are are
- 1:12:29Speaker 7: ultimately going to get to a final decision, and then
- 1:12:31Speaker 7: when the final decisions made, then we're gonna have choices
- 1:12:34Speaker 7: to make, or maybe we will have no choices to make.
- 1:12:36Speaker 7: I don't know, you know what we'll have to find out.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: I know for sure we're gonna hear more about all
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: this in the coming days, and we'll hear more from
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: start tomorrow on the program as well. Let me jump
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: to the Cowboys real quick. Coming off the win of
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: the Cardinals after the game and seeing several different guys
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: really step up at the wide receiver spot. Clearly they're
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: making the decision for Schottenheimer and for his offensive staff
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: more difficult to decide how many wide receivers, he thinks,
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: so keep yeah.
- 1:13:08Speaker 10: You know, we'll start playing those numbers games here in
- 1:13:10Speaker 10: a couple of weeks. And uh, but it's talented room,
- 1:13:13Speaker 10: you know. And uh, you know, it's like I said,
- 1:13:17Speaker 10: I'm proud of of the Joneses and Jerry and Steven
- 1:13:20Speaker 10: and Will McClay and the personnel group. I mean, we're
- 1:13:23Speaker 10: a much better football team on paper. But the play
- 1:13:26Speaker 10: style is right and that's what these guys will even know.
- 1:13:29Speaker 10: And it's cool when you're when you're young guys or
- 1:13:32Speaker 10: the guys that are battling do that. It puts a
- 1:13:34Speaker 10: lot of fun pressure on the vets because they got
- 1:13:37Speaker 10: to step up and do the same thing, which I
- 1:13:38Speaker 10: know they will.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: And one other from Shotti, Uh, one thing that's been
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: described differently. I mentioned in the Cowboys is a different field.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: But the other thing is the depth thing, whether you're
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: talking about a running back or in the defense and
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: the overall depth and shot members ask how much different
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: does the depth of this football team feel when compared
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: to last season's team.
- 1:14:03Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean I think, you know, we can all
- 1:14:04Speaker 10: do the do the assignment and put the two depth
- 1:14:08Speaker 10: charts down next to each other last year this time
- 1:14:10Speaker 10: and and today this time, and you know, taking nothing
- 1:14:14Speaker 10: away from our football team last year. You know, we're
- 1:14:16Speaker 10: more talented on paper, and I'm really excited about the
- 1:14:20Speaker 10: defense and the way they're playing. And you know, you
- 1:14:24Speaker 10: sit twenty nine guys and you're still able to do
- 1:14:26Speaker 10: what we're able to do.
- 1:14:28Speaker 11: You're getting those.
- 1:14:28Speaker 10: Guys invaluable reps to help us make these these decisions.
- 1:14:31Speaker 10: It will be very tough decisions.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: So there's Brian shot Hiber will hear more from Cowboys
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: and Texans throughout the course of this week as they
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: head toward their final preseason games. Coming up next, we
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: visit with Roe Shawn Johnson, the former Longborn and now
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: Chicago Bear. When we continue on this Monday afternoon on
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone, and.
- 1:14:53Speaker 12: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the voice
- 1:14:55Speaker 12: of the Longhorns. Craig Way. Follow Craig on social media
- 1:15:00Speaker 12: and boys, we.
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: Want to be back to the program this afternoon.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: It's not often that we come back from a break
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: here on The Craigway Show with Texas fight. Even though
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: we are the flagship station of the long Horns, even
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: though I am the play by play voice of the
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: long Horns, we don't do it that often, but we
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: do it.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: On special occasion.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: We do have special location there because we're visiting with
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: a lifetime Longhorn, a guy who not only is the
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: pride of Port Arthur, Texas and certainly a big pride
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: of the Texas Longhorns, but making a lot of people
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: proud of what he's doing with the Chicago Bears in
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: the NFL. Roshawn Johnson joins us now row, I appreciate
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: the time, and especially as training camp is winding down
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: and you guys are getting ready for the start of
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: the season.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: How you holding up through all this?
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: Yeah, man, thanks for having me on. Craig feeling good man.
- 1:16:01Speaker 13: I'm just you know, glad to be up and healthy
- 1:16:03Speaker 13: and you know, back playing ball again and looking to
- 1:16:06Speaker 13: make some noise this season.
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm just glad to be back.
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: I want you to hear a sound by This is
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: from from your head coach down here. Steve Sarkisi said
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: it just this morning at practice when he was asked
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: a question about intensity of practice in fall camp and
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: getting ready for the season, and how there have been
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: examples went from when he first got here on how
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: to do it right.
- 1:16:28Speaker 7: We're practicing fast, we're practicing hard, we're practicing physical, and
- 1:16:33Speaker 7: when you don't right now, you stand out. You know,
- 1:16:37Speaker 7: it used to be the other way around here we
- 1:16:38Speaker 7: first got started. You know, when demarve On Overshowing or
- 1:16:41Speaker 7: Roshawn Johnson practiced really hard, they stood out because maybe
- 1:16:45Speaker 7: not everybody else was. Now everybody else goes really hard,
- 1:16:49Speaker 7: and so when you're not, you stand out the other way.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: See, you you and Demo were setting an example back
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: in the day, I imagine for hard practice.
- 1:16:59Speaker 12: How did that?
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: Uh?
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: And then we talked about it after games in the
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: past when he played at Texas about how hard and
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: and you and de Marvi and and Bijean and and
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: several of other guys who worked so hard in practice,
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: how did that become habit for you? And how has
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: that helped you now that you've taken the next step
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: and you're getting ready to enter your fourth year in
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: the NFL.
- 1:17:21Speaker 13: Right, Yeah, I think we had some great competition down
- 1:17:24Speaker 13: there on the forty acres. Like you said, I mean,
- 1:17:26Speaker 13: he's going against the Marvion oversawan like you better bring
- 1:17:29Speaker 13: it because he's gonna bring it every day. So there
- 1:17:31Speaker 13: was a lot of iron shopping and iron down there
- 1:17:33Speaker 13: on that campus while I was down there. And yeah,
- 1:17:37Speaker 13: I feel like we just had a mentality that we,
- 1:17:40Speaker 13: for one, we took from the guys before us. I mean,
- 1:17:43Speaker 13: I think Sam Elliger did a great job of just
- 1:17:44Speaker 13: playing that to me, as long as guys like Malcolm Rose,
- 1:17:48Speaker 13: Steven Duberne, you know, the list goes on. But yeah,
- 1:17:52Speaker 13: I think it was really really just a mindset and
- 1:17:53Speaker 13: us just wanting to win, us just wanting to like
- 1:17:56Speaker 13: change change the culture while I was there and finding
- 1:18:00Speaker 13: a way to do that.
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: And I mean the only way that I really knew
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: was you know, hard work, so uh, day in and
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: day out, whether that was you know, competing with Demo.
- 1:18:07Speaker 13: Or competing with the guys on the offensive side of
- 1:18:09Speaker 13: the ball, Like, uh, my motto was like I'm gonna
- 1:18:12Speaker 13: try to be the hardest worker.
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: On the team.
- 1:18:14Speaker 13: So I feel like we we definitely as time went on,
- 1:18:17Speaker 13: invited that mindset and uh, you know, we would have
- 1:18:22Speaker 13: surely liked to have went one more games than you know,
- 1:18:26Speaker 13: we won. While while I was there, But I think
- 1:18:28Speaker 13: we definitely instilled a culture that uh is uh you know, prolonging,
- 1:18:32Speaker 13: prolonging today.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's one of the things that Sarks talked that
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: Sark has talked about, is the culture that was established
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: by you guys. And we bring up these names, We
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: bring up Demo, and we bring up Bjeon and we
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: and we bring up some of the other guys you managed,
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: Malcolm wrote several of the other guys as well. Several
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: of the guys that you just talked about are uh
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: playing in the NFL now some are household names obviously
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: in the NFL. Uh here you are getting ready to
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: start your your fourth season with the Bears. How much
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: do you keep in contact with those guys other than
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: you know, we always see the shots after a game.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: When when college teammates get together, maybe there's a jersey
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: swap or maybe just a hug and well wished and
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: all that. How how would you describe what it's like
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: when you're not seeing them every day as you did
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: as college teammates, but you know that they're in the
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: league and they know you're in the league.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: Do you get a chance to keep in touch with
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: these guys?
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:19:29Speaker 13: You know, it's obviously not as often, you know, as
- 1:19:31Speaker 13: guys you know, go to different teams and you know,
- 1:19:34Speaker 13: lives start to change, and you know the expectancy of
- 1:19:37Speaker 13: the league is very demanding, so obviously the relationship is
- 1:19:42Speaker 13: kind of altered.
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: But we all have the same respect.
- 1:19:44Speaker 13: From time to time, we tap back in and you know,
- 1:19:46Speaker 13: text each other and uh, you know, just kind of
- 1:19:48Speaker 13: keep in touch.
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: Definitely not as often you know as college.
- 1:19:52Speaker 13: But yeah, I mean, for sure, when we see each other,
- 1:19:55Speaker 13: it's all love and we you know, when we get
- 1:19:57Speaker 13: the opportunity to to you know, reunite, it's just like
- 1:20:01Speaker 13: old times. So yeah, but you know, as guys grow up,
- 1:20:04Speaker 13: guys start to have families, and it's definitely cool to
- 1:20:07Speaker 13: see as you guys you grow up and as it
- 1:20:09Speaker 13: just you know, I guess game more experience within the
- 1:20:14Speaker 13: league just to see people's lives change for the better.
- 1:20:16Speaker 13: So yeah, but it's all of once once we see
- 1:20:19Speaker 13: each other and can get the opportunity to talk again.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: We're visiting with Rochean, John said here on sports Radio
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred of the Zone. Rochean, one thing that
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: you established in addition to that, toughness was how you
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: were willing to contribute and by whatever means, whether it
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: was running the football, catching the football, blocking, and then
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: on special teams as well. And you carried that mindset
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: on to the NFL. You know, the amount of hits.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: We always hear there's a finite amount of hits and
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: it can take its toll. And obviously you've had to
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: battle some injuries as well. How has that mindset for
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: you been able to stay aggressive, to stay physical even
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: in a sport where over time those kinds of hits
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: and things like that can take its toll.
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:21:03Speaker 13: We play a barbaric sport, you know, in football, So
- 1:21:06Speaker 13: I try my best to be proactive towards.
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: Any type of injuries, you know.
- 1:21:11Speaker 13: So I think for me, the most proactive measures that
- 1:21:15Speaker 13: I can take is, for one, knowing what my assignment
- 1:21:18Speaker 13: is and how to do it the best that I
- 1:21:20Speaker 13: can do it in the smartest and most effective way.
- 1:21:24Speaker 13: And you know that that that a lot goes into that,
- 1:21:27Speaker 13: you know, not just from the things that I wear,
- 1:21:29Speaker 13: but how I.
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: Play as well.
- 1:21:30Speaker 13: So, uh, yeah, I feel like I've taken a lot
- 1:21:33Speaker 13: of preventive measures as it pertains to you know, injury,
- 1:21:37Speaker 13: whether it be you know, bodily injury or uh, you know,
- 1:21:41Speaker 13: head injuries, any type of injuries.
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: I feel like I've taken a lot of preventive measures,
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: uh by.
- 1:21:46Speaker 13: My diet, my workouts, and even the esssiies that I
- 1:21:49Speaker 13: were on the field as well. I mean you might
- 1:21:51Speaker 13: see me, uh I wear the Guardian cap along with
- 1:21:53Speaker 13: a Q collar and a brain bowl mouthpiece.
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: That helps me, you know, be as proactive to injuries
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: as as I can.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: Roachean brings this up in our conversation with Rochan is
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: brought to you by a brain vault, and you brought
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: it up, so I want to give you a chance
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: to talk about it. This is something that's a mouthguard
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: that has scientifically proven to significantly increase next strength, a
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: key factor in helping reduce the risk of head related injuries.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: This is backed by published science and research, and it's
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: been in the league for like sixteen years. You go
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: back with this a little bit, don't you, And how
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: did you get involved with in it and explain to
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: folks what it does to help make the game safer
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: for you?
- 1:22:40Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:22:40Speaker 13: Yeah, So as a pertains to the brain ball mouth guard, essentially,
- 1:22:44Speaker 13: what it does it aligns your jaw in such a
- 1:22:48Speaker 13: way that is the pressure is evenly distributed within your
- 1:22:52Speaker 13: mouth and which allows your neck to stabilize better. So
- 1:22:56Speaker 13: it essentially acts as a sea boat for your brain
- 1:22:58Speaker 13: within these many cos legends that you may take on
- 1:23:01Speaker 13: when you play the game of football. So yeah, I
- 1:23:04Speaker 13: feel like it does a great job and stabilizing my
- 1:23:06Speaker 13: jaw and helping me brace my neck for impact, and
- 1:23:11Speaker 13: you know, it helps me dish out the impact as
- 1:23:13Speaker 13: well without taking as much of a toll on my body.
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like it's it's done.
- 1:23:19Speaker 13: Great for me thus far, and it's definitely just another
- 1:23:22Speaker 13: tool that I feel like, Uh, it's something that you
- 1:23:24Speaker 13: can add to your toolbox to prolong you prolong your
- 1:23:28Speaker 13: career and just keep you on the field. So yes,
- 1:23:31Speaker 13: it's been great, and it's been something that I've I've
- 1:23:33Speaker 13: worn throughout the latter years of my career thus far.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: And I've heard the other former long Horns also been
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: Michael taff It has been one of those guys and
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: and several of the other guys. One of the things
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: I like about it is that they they say to
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: get locked in because of what brain Vault can do
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: for you. I mean, like you said, kind of lotch
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: in place so that you can brace for impact by
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: having that mouthpiece in there, right.
- 1:23:58Speaker 13: Yes, it essentially disperses the pressure in which you on
- 1:24:05Speaker 13: your bite force bites down. It disperses it evenly in
- 1:24:09Speaker 13: order for your neck to stabilize better, so on impact,
- 1:24:14Speaker 13: you're you're able to utilize all those muscles, little tiny
- 1:24:17Speaker 13: muscles within your neck in order to reduce, you know,
- 1:24:20Speaker 13: your head from rattling and ultimately reducing the chances of
- 1:24:25Speaker 13: a concussion.
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: And then the other thing role.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: I think it's important to point out here what I've
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: heard about it is it's comfortable. A lot of people think, boy,
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: if you're taking preventative measures and you're doing certain things, uh,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: it's gonna it's gonna take out of your comfort zone
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: and make it. Make it where you're not comfortable, where
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: your head's not comforta where your mouth isn'tcomfortable. That didn't
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: like this with this brain ball piece, is it?
- 1:24:47Speaker 10: No?
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: No, No, not not at all. It's definitely something that's very.
- 1:24:53Speaker 13: Very easy, very easy to use, barely noticeable if any
- 1:24:58Speaker 13: When you wear it, you're able to talk, you're able
- 1:25:00Speaker 13: to move around. It's not something that's s bulky or
- 1:25:04Speaker 13: something that gets in the way. I think of it
- 1:25:07Speaker 13: almost like an visil line in a sense. But yeah,
- 1:25:11Speaker 13: I mean it's not not a house at all, I
- 1:25:14Speaker 13: would say.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: And and this is the thing also in hearing from
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: from other guys that while it's been approved and in
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: league used for the past sixteen years, and then going
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: all the way back to Sam Bradford was one of
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: the first to do it, is that, uh, there's still
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: there's still an education process, isn't there? Just a little
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: word getting out And imagine you've probably had some teammates asking, hey,
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: what is it you're doing? You know that that sort
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: of thing, And and at that point that bit of
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: curiosity on their their part gives you the opportunity and
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: the platform to educate them on it a little, doesn't
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: it right?
- 1:25:49Speaker 13: Yeah, yes, sir, I belay that's the most important thing,
- 1:25:52Speaker 13: just kind of knowing what does what and seeing if
- 1:25:55Speaker 13: it makes sense. Especially with a lot of guys in
- 1:25:57Speaker 13: the league, I feel like long ngevity is really really key.
- 1:26:00Speaker 13: I mean, guys want to play for as long as
- 1:26:02Speaker 13: they can, so I feel like guys are very receptive
- 1:26:04Speaker 13: to that information, and not just with guys in the league,
- 1:26:07Speaker 13: but you know kids at the youth level as well.
- 1:26:11Speaker 13: I mean, you want to do anything you can to
- 1:26:13Speaker 13: protect your loved ones and make sure you know they
- 1:26:16Speaker 13: don't have any type of injuries in any regard, but
- 1:26:20Speaker 13: any productive measures that make sense.
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: I feel like it's an no brainner right.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: The one other thing I wanted to mention that brain
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: Vault is currently doing some custom fittings here in Austin
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: at local area high schools and teams groups and all sports.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: And they've also set up fittings at their local office
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: right here in Austin and you can go to brain
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: vault dot com for more information brain vault dot com.
- 1:26:42Speaker 5: Roachan.
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: Before I'll let you go, I want to ask you
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: about this Bears teamt you guys come off getting into
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: the playoffs cause the big win over Green Bay and
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: had the heartbreaking loss to the Rams. But I know
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: you guys feel pretty excited about what you have going
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: into this twenty twenty six NFL season.
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: Yeah, sir, Yeah, most definitely.
- 1:27:02Speaker 13: I think last year was definitely a foundational step in
- 1:27:04Speaker 13: the right direction for this organization. I feel like we
- 1:27:08Speaker 13: learned a lot from that season and what to do
- 1:27:11Speaker 13: and how to handle things and how not to handle things.
- 1:27:13Speaker 13: You know, we had a lot a lot of thriller
- 1:27:15Speaker 13: games that we felt like we we deserve to win,
- 1:27:19Speaker 13: and then you know, a lot of games that we
- 1:27:21Speaker 13: did we felt like we didn't have to make so close.
- 1:27:23Speaker 3: So there's a lot of things we can learn from
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: from that season. But at the same time, I think
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: Ben has done a great job.
- 1:27:28Speaker 13: Of instilling within this team that like that was last year,
- 1:27:32Speaker 13: this is a whole new year and we can't really
- 1:27:34Speaker 13: get complacent with how that result went went for the team.
- 1:27:38Speaker 13: We know the city has a lot of you know,
- 1:27:40Speaker 13: expectation coming in in this year, But in the same sense,
- 1:27:45Speaker 13: I don't think anybody anybody's expectations trump ours. So yeah,
- 1:27:49Speaker 13: I feel like we're taken the right steps in the
- 1:27:51Speaker 13: right directions and we'll we'll capitalize on it this season.
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: A final thing here, I always hear about this from
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: players in whatever work.
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: If you have Texas players.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: Former Longhorns, former Oklahoma suitters, former Aggies on the same
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: team that you guys kind of even if you don't
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: have the friendly wager with one another way, you have
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: to wear a jersey or something like that. You guys
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: do kind of give each other a little bit of
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: Greek good natured grief in business.
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: Will that be the be the same with some of
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: your teammates.
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: I know Kayla Williams also played USC clearly, but merely
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: the fact that he was an Oklahma suiter. And you've
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: got guys from other teams that you went up against
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: when you're in college. You guys still give each other
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: a lot of good nature grief about that.
- 1:28:34Speaker 13: Oh, yeah, for sure. Yeah, Kayla is one of the
- 1:28:37Speaker 13: main ones. He always likes her of that one particular
- 1:28:41Speaker 13: game that he had versus US. But yeah, we always
- 1:28:43Speaker 13: have some you know, friendly banner back and forth as
- 1:28:46Speaker 13: we go throughout the years, and as you know, college
- 1:28:48Speaker 13: football ramps up, and then you know, everybody's obsessed with Texas.
- 1:28:52Speaker 13: Whether you hate him or you love them, everybody always
- 1:28:55Speaker 13: has something to say about Texas, So we tend to
- 1:28:58Speaker 13: garner a lot of attention.
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: So, I mean, I love it.
- 1:29:01Speaker 13: I mean I'm always hard repping the school every every
- 1:29:04Speaker 13: Saturday that I get while I'm up there in Chicago.
- 1:29:06Speaker 13: So uh and even you know, I'm it's always cool
- 1:29:10Speaker 13: for me to see from this perspective because I mean
- 1:29:12Speaker 13: the In the off season, I go back down to
- 1:29:13Speaker 13: Austin and you know, run with the team sometime and
- 1:29:16Speaker 13: uh work out down there at the facility. So I
- 1:29:20Speaker 13: get to see, you know, certain young guys play and uh,
- 1:29:24Speaker 13: you know, it's just cool to see from the outside
- 1:29:26Speaker 13: looking in now you know guys, young guys coming in
- 1:29:29Speaker 13: and working hard, working their way up and having.
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: Success on on Saturdays. So yeah, it's it's always fun.
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: That's terrific. Hey, ro I appreciate you doing this. Like
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: I said, I know you're getting near the start of
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: the season. It's great to visit with you. Wish you
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: continued health and happiness and uh, and we look forward
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: to seeing what you and the Bears do uh this season.
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: I know you'll be looking in on the long runs
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: as well. Thanks so much for joining us. Again, I really.
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: Appreciate it, Yes, sir, appreciate you. Correct.
- 1:29:54Speaker 11: All right.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: That's where Seawan Johnson and again our conversation with Rochean
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: brought you by brain Vault. Can go to brain vault
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: dot com for more Flat.
- 1:30:03Speaker 8: Street Chicago.
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: I had a lot of fun visiting with Roshawn Johnson,
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: the Chicago Bear.
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: From his days is a Texason is this the Blues
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: Brother's version.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought it was Oh, that sounded like the
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: late John Belushi there along with dan Ackroy was tweenyed
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: Home Chicago. If you've ever seen the movie, you know
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: this is the big number that they're doing. They're doing
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: this number when they make their escape down through the stage.
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: Have you ever seen the movie?
- 1:30:38Speaker 4: No, I need to, because we've brought it up on
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: this show multiple times and Alison's family loves it well.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: Among the things that the footnotes that came from that movie,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: it's one of the most expensive movies ever made. And
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: when you've seen what happens in the movie, you'll understand
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: why it's one of the most expensive movies ever made.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: The scores of crashed and wrecked Chicago police cars to
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: a mall, a shopping mall that we all found out
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: later was targeted for closure. You think about this, that's
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: nineteen seventy nine. I think when they did this movie, Uh,
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: seventy nine or eighty was right around that time, yeah,
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: nineteen eighty Yeah, and some malls were already being targeted
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: for closure. Now we know the shopping malls are are
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: a dying breed. Now there aren't as many of them
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: as as there used to be used to be the
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: thing to do when I was a teenager, I think
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: were going up to the mall.
- 1:31:40Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: I had some of that.
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: My daughters when they would go up to Lake Line
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: monitors and I used to refer to them as mall rats.
- 1:31:46Speaker 5: They didn't like that, you know, they like to hang out.
- 1:31:50Speaker 5: They're mall rats. Mall rats.
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: You know, they didn't never leave the mall.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: They're just in the They're in the they're in the stores,
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: they're everywhere, you know, that kind of thing, and that
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: it's been in more recent years of as shopping malls
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: have died a slow death. You know, Highland Mall was
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: a really really nice mall here for many years. That's
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: where the ACC campus is, Austin Community College Campus ACC
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: Highland Campus.
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: There was a big shopping mall there.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: They had a card collecting shop in there, and I
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: bought fools still in the package sets of Pokemon cards
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: for my two oldest kids back in the day. They
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: probably be worth something today. And last night on the
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: ESPN telecast from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, at the Little League World
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: Series the Braves Brewers game, they had Chris saalong with him,
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: and he was talking about one of his big things
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: and visiting with Jacob Mizerowski and the Brewers about his
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: collecting Pokemon cards and that he has like a ten scale.
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: Blah blah blah charizard and all that other kind of stuff.
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: So we keep learning more and more about the miss
- 1:32:57Speaker 4: There's a lot to unpack. He is a card to
- 1:32:59Speaker 4: be played with.
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: That's true. That's absolutely true. So anyway that.
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: All of that to say that shopping malls are kind
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: of dying a slow death now. But this one particular
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: mall of was targeted for closure. They just tear it
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: to pieces in cars driving in the mall.
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: There's some malls that I've seen in well, in Bismarck
- 1:33:26Speaker 4: in particular. Not to put it on blast, I really
- 1:33:28Speaker 4: enjoyed my time there, but there were some malls that
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: had clearly seen better days that might have been you know,
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: maybe you could have shot some things there and worked
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: it up in post production to save everybody some time
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: on that.
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: It's funny you bring that up.
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: There was a game several years ago, this is twenty fifteen,
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: twenty sixteen. Right around that time, Texas women were in
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: ames to play Iowa State. And I believe it was
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: a late tip time that now, like eight o'clock and
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: Karen Ashton was the coach of Texas, and they had
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: their shooting but they had to have their shoot around earlier.
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: They couldn't have it later in the day, so they
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: had to have the shoot around earlier. It's the only
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: time they could be inside Hilton Coliseum. So they do it,
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: and so they got all this time to kill. So
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: they take the team to this mall and tell them
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: they've got like an hour, hour and a half or
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: whatever if they want to walk around in the mall.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: And so I happen to be with them on the bus.
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: So I get off and I start walking around, and
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: I'm walking in this mall. I'm looking and I'm going,
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: there's nothing here. There's not anything good here. Reminded in
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: recent years and reminded of that that iHeart podcast promo
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: that runs on this station. The other one is about
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: the about the prisoners that they let go shopping them
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: all and one dude doesn't come back and he's still
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: on the lamb. He's still at large even today all
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: these years later, or something like that. They turn them
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: loose into shopping mall. And when I first heard that,
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: the first thing that went my mind was, Oh, I
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: wonder if it was the shopping mall in Aimes. How
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: it was, I don't know, Maybe maybe it was, I
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: don't know. All right, we'll be back. We've got a
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: couple of things to wrap up before we get done
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: with today's program here on sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: the Zone, and where you always listen to us, right
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: here on the iHeartRadio app.
