- 0:00You know, once again, want to thank our
- 0:01fans. Um, you know, another unbelievable
- 0:04environment, another sellout. Um, you
- 0:06know, our guys talked about in the
- 0:08huddle after shoot today. You know, I
- 0:10kind of let them talk because they hear
- 0:11me talk enough. Um, and I said, you
- 0:13know, what do you guys got? And, you
- 0:15know, Keshan Hall and KO said, you know,
- 0:18we got to do this for our fans because,
- 0:20you know, they continue to show up even
- 0:23though we've had a couple of rough tough
- 0:24results on the road. you know, they
- 0:26continue to just support our team and uh
- 0:29you know, they just they recognize that
- 0:30and they appreciate that and you know,
- 0:32they came out and gave you know, our our
- 0:35fan base their best effort and
- 0:36obviously, you know, a phenomenal
- 0:38result. Um, you know, I thought our guys
- 0:40did a really good job of just executing
- 0:42the game plan and some of the things
- 0:44that we really talked about being
- 0:45important and, you know, a couple of
- 0:46those things would be, you know,
- 0:47transition defense was going to be
- 0:48really important. Uh, they averaged 25
- 0:51points in transition a game and they
- 0:52only had 13 tonight. So, we were able to
- 0:53almost cut that in half, which is such a
- 0:55significant thing to do against such a
- 0:57great offensive team. We limited our
- 0:59live ball turnovers. You know, we had
- 1:01two sloppy ones in the first half, but
- 1:03to only have 10 turnovers and 20
- 1:04assists, you know, 2 to1 assist turnover
- 1:06ratio against that team is really good.
- 1:08Um, but I thought our defense just
- 1:10really answered the bell in this game.
- 1:12That was probably the best we've
- 1:13collectively played defensively against
- 1:15a really good team. you know, we've done
- 1:16it against some lower competition, but
- 1:18to do it against a team, you know, with
- 1:20the firepower that Arkansas has, I
- 1:21thought our guys did a great job in
- 1:23communicating their switching um and
- 1:25making some adjustments in their ball
- 1:26screens. And uh, you know, they were
- 1:28excited about, you know, obviously
- 1:29playing a really good team. You know,
- 1:30they got a couple guys that are going to
- 1:32get their name called in June in the NBA
- 1:33draft. And, you know, our guys got up
- 1:35for that. The challenge now is, you
- 1:36know, we got to do that every night
- 1:38because you've seen what it looks like
- 1:39when you don't do it. You know, you uh
- 1:42lose to Georgia in overtime and you lose
- 1:44to&m at home. Um, so, you know, we just
- 1:47got to continue to build off of that.
- 1:49Um, but I thought, you know, after
- 1:51Tuesday night, you know, um, lesser
- 1:53teams would have kind of continued to
- 1:55harp on that and let that affect their
- 1:57performance and get too low. Well, we
- 1:59got to do the same thing after tonight.
- 2:01Like, we beat a top 15 team. Um, we
- 2:04can't let that get us too high now.
- 2:05Like, we, you know, we we felt like we
- 2:08we should win the game playing them at
- 2:10home. Um, you know, obviously have a ton
- 2:12of respect for those guys. like they do
- 2:14such a good job and Kyle's done a great
- 2:16job with this group and they're going to
- 2:17win a lot of games this year. Um, but we
- 2:19can't let that one result, you know,
- 2:21make us feel like we've done something
- 2:22because, you know, we're still one and
- 2:24two in conference and we still got some
- 2:25ground we got to make up. So, just got
- 2:27to stay locked in and just continue to
- 2:29work to get better. But, you know, I'm
- 2:31proud of the guys because, you know,
- 2:32since the Queens game, we've had a lot
- 2:34of really good practices and um, you
- 2:37know, it it showed tonight. So, um,
- 2:40excited about the result, happy with the
- 2:42result. Um, so yeah, take any questions.
- 2:46>> 20 assists for you all only 10 10 turns.
- 2:49Talked a lot about the assist to
- 2:50turnover ratio. Just the ball movement.
- 2:52Was that like the best you've seen this
- 2:54season? What was what was the key to to
- 2:57making that happen?
- 2:58>> Yeah, I mean against a really good team,
- 2:59probably probably one of the better ones
- 3:00we've done offensively. Um, you know,
- 3:03Tahad, but when you're when your two
- 3:05best players have 12 assists, that that
- 3:06makes a difference. you know, they're
- 3:08such they are willing passers, you know,
- 3:10and but they're very capable passers and
- 3:12Tahad did a really good job, you know,
- 3:14after, you know, he recognized that they
- 3:16were putting two on the ball and trying
- 3:17to get it out of his hands. Um, he
- 3:19didn't just receive the trap, he
- 3:21attacked the trap and then our guys did
- 3:22a better job in the first half of being
- 3:24receivers. Then once we were able to get
- 3:26off the ball, we were able to attack
- 3:27them because we had them kind of spread
- 3:29out. And we, you know, this team is a
- 3:31team that's got guys that can really get
- 3:32downhill and get to the rim. You look at
- 3:34Sebastian, Tahad, KO, Kei, Elijah, all
- 3:38guys that can get past their men
- 3:39one-on-one. So, once he was able to get
- 3:41off it, a lot of really good things
- 3:43happened and um did a good job of, you
- 3:45know, knocking down open shots. You
- 3:47know, we we we attacked the paint, you
- 3:48know, outsc scored them 48 to 28 in the
- 3:50paint. So, we did a good job of just
- 3:51attacking the rim, playing off two feet,
- 3:53using shot fakes. You know, they only
- 3:54had three block shots and that's a
- 3:56really good shot blocking team. So, they
- 3:58we just did a good job of just executing
- 3:59the game plan. you know, we we were
- 4:01aggressive in transition and but then
- 4:03when we didn't have anything in
- 4:04transition, we talked about wanting to
- 4:06pull it out and run offense because, you
- 4:08know, um you know, we can't have any
- 4:11middle offense against Arkansas and we
- 4:12were trying to keep this game below 73
- 4:15possessions. I don't know what it ended
- 4:16up being. Um but, you know, that's you
- 4:19know, obviously something that we
- 4:20focused on and you know, it was
- 4:22productive.
- 4:24>> Stephen, I asked you on Tuesday after
- 4:25Tahad didn't start for the second game
- 4:27in a row what you were looking for. you
- 4:29had to handle stuff off the floor. He
- 4:30was back in the starting lineup tonight.
- 4:31What is it that that made the difference
- 4:33from then and now? And also Kaden not
- 4:34not having any events.
- 4:36>> Yeah, I mean, you know, it's it's more
- 4:38about, you know, for us like guys got we
- 4:41we we have an issue with guys being on
- 4:42time and you know, I've told the guys
- 4:45after before the Queens game like after
- 4:47Purdue, sorry. So that would before the
- 4:48Queens game. If you're late to
- 4:50something, you're not going to start. If
- 4:52you're or if you're come off the bench
- 4:53and you're late to something, you're
- 4:54going to miss a rotation. So that it's
- 4:56as simple as that. And that's, you know,
- 4:57kind of where, you know, we as a program
- 4:59have got to continue to get better and,
- 5:00you know, we got to be a little more
- 5:01responsible and, um, you know, that was,
- 5:03you know, the result of, you know, that
- 5:05tonight. So, um, but, you know, on the
- 5:07flip side, like really, really happy for
- 5:10Blake. You know, Blake is a guy that in
- 5:12practice is one of our best players.
- 5:14And, you know, um, people, you know, on
- 5:17Twitter can go crazy when he gets in the
- 5:18games, but like if you come to practice,
- 5:21and some of you do, you you watch how he
- 5:23is in practice. He's our best defender.
- 5:25Ask Ferg, like he sees it. Ask Hope,
- 5:28they they see it. Like he makes shots
- 5:30and it pisses me off because like, you
- 5:32know, we we'll like play great defense
- 5:34for an entire possession and then Blake
- 5:36will hit like a step back three. I'm
- 5:37like, dude, why don't you do this in the
- 5:39game like he he and he can drive by his
- 5:42man and you saw tonight what he's
- 5:43capable of. So, you know, in 10 minutes
- 5:45he's plus eight, but you know, he had
- 5:47that bad stretch at the end. So, he was
- 5:49plus 12 going into the last minute of
- 5:50the game. So, you know, he did a great
- 5:52job of getting us into our offense. He
- 5:54didn't turn the ball over. He got a
- 5:56steal. You know, he fouls more than I
- 5:58did when I was in college, which is hard
- 5:59to do. Um, but I love his
- 6:02aggressiveness. He does all the right
- 6:03things and I'm I'm happy for him.
- 6:05>> Nathan,
- 6:06>> Stephen, I know you have been pleased
- 6:07with how you guys rebounded the ball.
- 6:09How much of a difference did that make?
- 6:10And I think you guys are plus 30 now in
- 6:12three SEC games. How much of a
- 6:15difference has that made?
- 6:15>> Yeah, I mean it obviously it just gives
- 6:17you an opportunity to win the game. They
- 6:19they had um 33 missed shots and they
- 6:21only got eight of them back. So that's,
- 6:23you know, for a team that we we thought
- 6:25was a really good offensive rebounding
- 6:26team, that's that's significant and
- 6:28that's, you know, important and it's,
- 6:30you know, something that, you know, we
- 6:31just got to continue to do because we're
- 6:33not very we're not huge on the inside,
- 6:35but um we we're a really good offensive
- 6:37rebounding team. Um and if we put bodies
- 6:39on bodies and we're able to check out,
- 6:41you know, we can be a pretty good
- 6:42rebounding team. Now, um we've play like
- 6:46we're about to play some really good
- 6:47rebounding teams moving forward. You
- 6:48know, Missouri's huge and they crashed
- 6:50the offensive glass like crazy, so it's
- 6:52going to require some more step up
- 6:53moving forward. But so far through the
- 6:55first three results, very pleased with
- 6:56our rebounding.
- 6:58>> Stephen, coach K said this is a big time
- 7:00win for you and he wants you to do well
- 7:02because he also has a son coach and a
- 7:04little bit extra meaningful to be your
- 7:06first win against a guy his caliber
- 7:09coach.
- 7:09>> Yeah, I mean, well, first off, like
- 7:11coach Ian Borders had the scout um and
- 7:13coach Cory Williams had the scout. So,
- 7:16you know, they did a phenomenal job in
- 7:18our preparation. You know, Ian
- 7:20specifically is a a Louisville boy and,
- 7:23you know, he obviously has watched, you
- 7:25know, Patino and Cal specifically for a
- 7:28very long time. And he had the St.
- 7:29John's. He and Cory had the St. John's
- 7:31and the Arkansas scouts. So, you know,
- 7:33obviously happy for that for for Ian
- 7:35specifically because this was a really
- 7:36important game for him because he's
- 7:38always just had such an admiration for
- 7:39for Cal and everything that he's done.
- 7:41Um, you know, for me personally, like
- 7:43obviously I'm it's more about the
- 7:44program for me. Like this team has
- 7:46beaten three Hall of Fame coaches, you
- 7:48know, this year with with Coach Alman,
- 7:50Coach Patino, and now Coach Cal. Um, you
- 7:53know, just have always had so much
- 7:55respect for for the job that he's done.
- 7:56He doesn't get enough credit for how
- 7:58good of a coach he is X's and O's wise.
- 8:00Everybody talks about how he has such
- 8:01great players. Like, there's a lot of
- 8:03teams that have great players and they
- 8:05run shitty offense. Like, he he does a
- 8:07good job of putting his guys in position
- 8:08to be successful. That's why they've
- 8:10been so good. And I I really like his
- 8:12group this year. You know, he's got
- 8:13eight really good players and it just
- 8:15wasn't their night tonight. You know, I
- 8:16thought our our switching bothered him.
- 8:18And you know, um you know, Brad's is is
- 8:21such he's going to be a great coach one
- 8:23day as well. So, he's learning from he
- 8:24he's similar to me like just learning
- 8:26from you know, such a unbelievable coach
- 8:28and learning from one of the best. So,
- 8:30um yeah, I mean it's it's a it's we we
- 8:33just need we had to get that win. you
- 8:34know, it didn't matter who it was
- 8:36against. You know, we had to win that
- 8:37one because, you know, you can't dig
- 8:39yourself into 0 and3 hole in this
- 8:40conference and, you know, expect to
- 8:42have, you know, any real success. So,
- 8:44really important win and, uh, obviously
- 8:46against a top 15 opponent, uh, and a
- 8:48really good Arkansas team.
- 8:49>> We'll take two more.
- 8:51>> Ke was the first Auburn player to have
- 8:5330 back toback 30-point games in 32
- 8:56years. Missed a shot tonight. Just kind
- 8:58of what,
- 8:59>> you know, what was the what was the key
- 9:00to him to be so successful against this
- 9:02defense? I know he can score anybody,
- 9:04but this was this felt a little bit
- 9:05different.
- 9:06>> Uh, I mean, he I don't know. He's been
- 9:09doing this all year, so he doesn't get
- 9:11recognized or talked about enough. Um,
- 9:13like his offense has been his offense
- 9:15all year. Obviously, you know, making
- 9:17four out of five threes, you know, um,
- 9:19impacts that a little bit. I'm more
- 9:20pleased with his defense. like he he had
- 9:24two block shots tonight and I'm going to
- 9:26watch the film, but like every time
- 9:28there was penetration and he rotated
- 9:30over, he did such a good job of walling
- 9:32up and just getting vertical and not
- 9:34slapping down. That's something that
- 9:35he's really struggled with cuz he always
- 9:37rotates, he gets there, and then he
- 9:38slaps down and draws a silly foul.
- 9:40tonight. You know, he had three fouls,
- 9:42but like, you know, he had two block
- 9:44shots and I thought he had a lot of
- 9:45really good collisions at the rim where
- 9:47we made them miss tough contested twos.
- 9:50And um, you know, that's that's that's
- 9:52just, you know, what he's wanted to do.
- 9:53He wants to come here to become a better
- 9:54defender. And I think he's starting to
- 9:56do that. So, you know, offensively,
- 9:57that's just who he is. And um, you know,
- 10:00the the way Arkansas guarded allowed us
- 10:02played more a little more space. We
- 10:04spread him out a little bit and we were
- 10:05able to attack one-on-one closeouts and
- 10:07play off two feet. And you know, he's
- 10:08just he's such a talented scorer and he
- 10:10can just do it in a number of different
- 10:11ways.
- 10:12>> Last one.
- 10:13>> Elijah Freeman finished the game plus
- 10:1426. How much growth have you seen from
- 10:16him since he got on campus really? But
- 10:19specifically within the past couple
- 10:21games since he started coming off the
- 10:22bench.
- 10:23>> Yeah, I mean I think you know in his
- 10:25last five I think he's averaging like 14
- 10:27or so coming off the bench. And you know
- 10:29tonight, three assists, no turnovers. I
- 10:31don't love all the east west dribbling
- 10:33he did tonight. Like he's such an
- 10:34explosive player. I would like for them
- 10:35to go north and south more as opposed to
- 10:37side to side. Um because better team,
- 10:40you know, sorry, really good teams are
- 10:42going to strip and rip that. And it
- 10:43looked like a million times they were
- 10:44going to come get steals. But um he's so
- 10:47talented and he I thought he was really
- 10:49good defensively tonight. Um had six
- 10:51rebounds. You know, he just does a
- 10:53little bit of everything. And for for
- 10:54for me Taylor like you know you're right
- 10:56like the growth and the improvement that
- 10:58he's shown and but like for me the
- 11:00unselfishness that he's shown like he he
- 11:03recognized that you know Sebastian would
- 11:05probably be better in that starting
- 11:07lineup and he came into my office and
- 11:09you know volunteered to come off the
- 11:10bench and it's it's helped him play
- 11:12better and it's helped us give a spark
- 11:13off the bench. So, you know, um he's
- 11:15just a guy that's just going to continue
- 11:17to, you know, be so effective in games
- 11:19and, you know, um when he's out there
- 11:21doing the things that he's really good
- 11:22at, plus 26 just kind of proves that
- 11:24right there. So, you know, he played
- 11:26more like the minutes that we want him
- 11:28to play, we need him to be in that 25 to
- 11:2928 range, um in order for us to have,
- 11:32you know, a chance to to be the best
- 11:33version of ourselves. So, really proud
- 11:35of Elijah. I need him to, you know, do
- 11:37it on the road against another really
- 11:38good team on Wednesday.
- 11:39>> Thanks, coach.
- 11:40>> Thanks, guys.
