- 0:25globally, operates a huge network of satellites in low
- 0:28Earth orbit, approximately 342 miles above the Earth.
- 0:33And since its first launch of Starlink satellites in 2019,
- 0:36Starlink has seen exceptional growth.
- 0:39SpaceX has seen exceptional growth through Starlink,
- 0:42currently boasting over 2 million active customers across
- 0:46all continents and in more than sixty countries.
- 0:49Now, Brent Prokosh, a Senior affiliate consultant at
- 0:53Euroconsult, remarks on the remarkable subscriber growth of
- 0:56Starlink of feat unparalleled by traditional satellite service
- 1:00providers. Physics expansion not only
- 1:02highlights Spacex's technological prowess, but also
- 1:06its strategic market penetration.
- 1:08Starlink's ability to reach such a wide customer base rapidly
- 1:12sets a new benchmark in the satellite services industry,
- 1:16reflecting a significant shift in global Internet access
- 1:19capabilities. Now Starlink has transcended its
- 1:22initial consumer market focus, venturing into enterprise
- 1:26sectors such as maritime and also aviation, and this
- 1:30diversification taps into the burgeoning consumer satellite
- 1:33services market, projected to value over $92 billion in 2022.
- 1:38And analysts from Euro Consult predict that by the end of 2023,
- 1:42Starlink could constitute up to 40% of Spacex's overall
- 1:46business, generating upwards of $3 billion In this projection
- 1:51underscores Starlink's critical role in Spacex's future
- 1:54strategies and also revenue streams.
- 1:56And by offering versatile and high speed Internet services,
- 2:00Starlink is not just a subsidiary arm of SpaceX, but a

- 3:35consequences. And as Starlink continues to
- 3:38expand its satellite network, addressing these concerns
- 3:40becomes imperative to maintain a balance between innovative and

- 3:47And a recent study published in Astronomy and Astrophysics has
- 3:51brought alight to significant issues concerning Spacex's
- 3:54growing fleet of Starling satellites.
- 3:56This research, conducted using the Low Frequency Array
- 3:59telescope in the Netherlands, has revealed that the satellites
- 4:02are emitting unintended electromagnetic radiation.
- 4:05This radiation, originating from the satellites onboard
- 4:08electronics, poses a potential threat to astronomical
- 4:11observations. Now, the study, which observes
- 4:1368 of Spacex's starlinks, detected this radiation in a
- 4:17frequency range that is crucial for radio astronomical
- 4:20observations. The implications of these
- 4:22findings are significant considering Spacex's plans to
- 4:25expand its constellation to about 42,000 satellites with
- 4:29more than 4000 already orbiting Earth.
- 4:32This expansion raises concerns about the impact of such large
- 4:35satellite constellations on the field of astronomy and the need
- 4:38for regulation and mitigation categories.
- 4:42Now, radio astronomy, a field that relies on detecting
- 4:44electromagnetic waves from celestial bodies, is
- 4:47particularly vulnerable to interference from these
- 4:49satellites. These celestial objects emits a
- 4:52range of electromagnetic radiation, which astronomers
- 4:55observed using sensitive equipment tuned to specific
- 4:58frequency ranges. However, the radiation from
- 5:01Starling satellites, albeit equivalent to that from a
- 5:04television set, becomes problematic due to the sheer
- 5:07number of satellites emitting it simultaneously, and this concern
- 5:11is echoed by Federico de Bruno, spectrum manager of the Square
- 5:15Kilometer Array Observatory or the SKAO and author of the
- 5:19study. He highlights the potential for
- 5:21significant interference with radio astronomy given the
- 5:24planned scale of Starlink and other satellite constellations
- 5:27like One Web and others from Amazon.
- 5:30And the cumulative effect of the satellite's emissions could
- 5:33severely impact the quality of astronomical data, making large
- 5:37portions of it unusable for scientific research.
- 5:40Now, the study's findings have brought attention to the lack of
- 5:43regulations protecting terrestrial radio telescopes
- 5:45from such interference, and while SpaceX has not violated
- 5:49any existing rules, the current regulations do not adequately
- 5:53address the challenges posed by large satellite constellations.
- 5:57This oversight is particularly concerning given the
- 5:59encroachment of detected radiation on a protected band
- 6:03allocated by the International Telecommunications Union, and in
- 6:06response to these challenges, SpaceX and the National Science
- 6:09Foundation have reached an agreement to limit interference
- 6:12from Starling satellites in certain frequency bands.
- 6:15However, the broader issue is regulating and mitigating
- 6:17satellite interference remains unresolved.
- 6:20This situation underscores the need for updated policies and
- 6:24collaborative efforts between satellite operators in a
- 6:26scientific community to reserve the integrity of astronomical
- 6:30research. And the dilemma presented by
- 6:33Starlink's expansion epitomizes the modern challenge of
- 6:36balancing technological progress with the preservation of
- 6:39scientific and environmental resources.
- 6:42And while Starlink Project promises to revolutionize global
- 6:45Internet access, its unintended consequences on astronomy
- 6:48highlight the complexities of this balance.
- 6:51The increasing prevalence of large satellite constellations
- 6:53necessitates a nuanced approach. They considers both the benefits
- 6:58of technological advancements and the need to protect
