- 2:32Speaker 3: they come in contact with the Word of God. Now
- 2:36Speaker 3: we learn more from Jesus as he proclaims truths about
- 2:39Speaker 3: the greatness of God's kingdom, inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:49Speaker 4: Bible in a Year podcast. In our last episode, we
- 2:53Speaker 4: heard the parable of the sower, an illustration of how
- 2:57Speaker 4: different hearts receive and respond to the Word of God.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Jesus described four types of soil, from the hard, unreceptive
- 3:04Speaker 4: ground to the good, healthy soil that produces an abundant crop. Today,
- 3:10Speaker 4: we'll hear more about the kingdom of God as Jesus
- 3:13Speaker 4: continues to teach in parables to show His followers the
- 3:16Speaker 4: glories of His eternal kingdom. So, let's listen now to
- 3:20Speaker 4: God's Word.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Jesus was walking along the shores of the sea with
- 3:24Speaker 3: his disciples. A large crowd trailed behind him, waiting for
- 3:29Speaker 3: something miraculous to happen. Jesus and the twelve spoke of
- 3:32Speaker 3: the kingdom of heaven. Ever since the parable of the
- 3:35Speaker 3: four soils, the disciples were curious for more examples on
- 3:39Speaker 3: the will and desires of God. So Jesus told more
- 3:43Speaker 3: stories filled with deep meaning. Jesus walked and spoke to
- 3:47Speaker 3: the people. At the corner of his eye he could
- 3:50Speaker 3: see the Pharisees trailing next to the crowd. They whispered
- 3:53Speaker 3: amongst themselves and to the people. Jesus looked back to
- 3:57Speaker 3: them and then turned to his disciples and spoke, I
- 4:00Speaker 3: have told you that the kingdom of heaven is like
- 4:03Speaker 3: a farmer sowing good seeds in his fields. Here is
- 4:06Speaker 3: another story of a farmer. A farmer goes into the
- 4:10Speaker 3: field with his men to sow seeds. They toil and
- 4:13Speaker 3: work all day planting seeds in good fertile soil. After
- 4:18Speaker 3: a good day's work, the farmer and his men returned
- 4:21Speaker 3: home to their beds. However, when the men were sleeping,
- 4:25Speaker 3: a neighboring farmer snuck in through the cover of night.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Under the black cold evening, the competing farmer planted weeds
- 4:32Speaker 3: among the wheat seeds. Weeks later, the grain sprouted forth
- 4:37Speaker 3: tall and mighty, yet the weeds circled them. The farmer
- 4:41Speaker 3: and his men looked upon their field. It was filled
- 4:44Speaker 3: with beautiful grain and blighted weeds. Both existed with one another.
- 4:49Speaker 3: He clenched his teeth and said, This is the work
- 4:53Speaker 3: of my enemy. His workers turned to him and said, Master,
- 4:57Speaker 3: do you want us to uproot the weeds? No, the
- 5:00Speaker 3: farmer said. If you uproot the weeds, you risk uprooting
- 5:04Speaker 3: the wheat as well. Let both of them grow together. Then,
- 5:08Speaker 3: when we harvest, we can separate the weeds from the grain. Afterwards,
- 5:12Speaker 3: we can burn the weeds. What does the story mean?
- 5:17Speaker 3: the disciples asked Jesus. They were craving more wisdom. It
- 5:21Speaker 3: satisfied their souls. Jesus and his disciples kept walking, and
- 5:26Speaker 3: he explained to them its meaning, saying, The farmer is
- 5:29Speaker 3: the son of man. The field is the world he
- 5:32Speaker 3: loves and pours into. The good seed are the children
- 5:36Speaker 3: of God and the goodness of the kingdom. The one
- 5:39Speaker 3: who sowed the weeds is the devil, and his weeds
- 5:42Speaker 3: are those that would seek to choke out the goodness
- 5:44Speaker 3: of the kingdom of God. The disciples grew worried as
- 5:48Speaker 3: they heard Jesus speak. They had not considered that there
- 5:52Speaker 3: was an enemy seeking to choke out the good work
- 5:54Speaker 3: of God. Jesus sensed their worry and said, The weeds
- 5:59Speaker 3: and the grain were allowed to grow side by side.
- 6:02Speaker 3: This is the mercy of God. However, at the end
- 6:05Speaker 3: of the age, the weeds will be burned. The disciples
- 6:09Speaker 3: considered the cost of a cause that had an enemy.
- 6:12Speaker 3: It worried them. Was it worth the battle to follow Jesus,
- 6:17Speaker 3: they thought. Jesus nodded to himself. He wanted to remind
- 6:21Speaker 3: everyone to count the cost of following him. Most people
- 6:25Speaker 3: gathered by the water to follow Jesus. He stopped walking
- 6:29Speaker 3: with his disciples and climbed a small hill for the
- 6:31Speaker 3: crowd to hear him. The kingdom of heaven is like
- 6:35Speaker 3: buried treasure, hidden in a vast and open field, Jesus proclaimed.
- 6:40Speaker 3: A man found the treasure, then covered it up. He
- 6:43Speaker 3: sold all he had to buy the field so he
- 6:45Speaker 3: could have the treasure for himself. It was nothing for
- 6:49Speaker 3: him to give up his belongings, since what he gained
- 6:52Speaker 3: was far greater than what he lost. The crowd nodded
- 6:56Speaker 3: in understanding. Jesus continued, saying, The kingdom of heaven is
- 7:01Speaker 3: like a merchant who was searching for fine pearls. When
- 7:04Speaker 3: he finally found the perfect pearl, it was nothing for
- 7:07Speaker 3: him to sell all he had so he could have
- 7:10Speaker 3: the pearl of great price. Jesus looked upon the sea
- 7:14Speaker 3: of faces below and smiled. He raised his hand to
- 7:17Speaker 3: the boats on the shore and said, The kingdom of
- 7:19Speaker 3: heaven is like a net that was thrown into the
- 7:22Speaker 3: sea to gather fish. When it was full, men drew
- 7:25Speaker 3: it in and counted the fish. Some of the fish
- 7:28Speaker 3: were good and others were rotten. So the men preserved
- 7:31Speaker 3: the good fish and threw away the rotten ones. So
- 7:34Speaker 3: it will be at the end of the age. The
- 7:37Speaker 3: righteous will be preserved and the wicked preserved. will be
- 7:40Speaker 3: thrown away into the fiery furnace.
- 7:44Speaker 4: In today's passage, the disciples are listening intently as Jesus
- 7:49Speaker 4: continues to teach them the secrets of the kingdom of God.
- 7:53Speaker 4: The kingdom of God is the reign and rule of
- 7:56Speaker 4: Christ in us. So he speaks in parables so that
- 7:59Speaker 4: those who know him can receive this truth and have
- 8:02Speaker 4: real understanding. Jesus told stories that his audience could relate
- 8:07Speaker 4: to using terms and settings that were very familiar to them.
- 8:11Speaker 4: Though Jesus knows the most profound and complex mysteries of
- 8:14Speaker 4: the universe, Jesus met them as he meets us, right
- 8:19Speaker 4: where we are, speaking to us in words that we
- 8:22Speaker 4: can comprehend, often simple but very clear. The next parable
- 8:27Speaker 4: he told them was about a farmer who planted seed
- 8:29Speaker 4: in good soil. This is the soil that should produce
- 8:32Speaker 4: a good crop. But while he wasn't looking, another farmer
- 8:36Speaker 4: scattered weeds among the seed and the good soil. And
- 8:39Speaker 4: so when the wheat sprang up, it grew among the weeds.
- 8:43Speaker 4: The servants asked the farmer if they could pull up
- 8:45Speaker 4: the weeds, but the farmer told them to let the
- 8:47Speaker 4: good and the bad grow together. At harvest time, the
- 8:50Speaker 4: weeds would be gathered up first and burned. Then the
- 8:54Speaker 4: good crop, the wheat, would be gathered and brought into
- 8:56Speaker 4: the barn. Jesus was telling us that there would be
- 9:00Speaker 4: among us agents of the enemy, the devil. that weeds
- 9:03Speaker 4: would crop up and choke out the Word of God.
- 9:06Speaker 4: It was a warning to all disciples who need to
- 9:09Speaker 4: listen as we face opposition and those who try to
- 9:13Speaker 4: cancel out the message of the gospel. This is all
- 9:16Speaker 4: a vision of a future reality when God's angels would
- 9:20Speaker 4: come to tear out the weeds destined for destruction. This
- 9:24Speaker 4: was judgment. But in the meantime, there would be struggles
- 9:27Speaker 4: for those who accepted the Word and sought to produce fruit.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Jesus was reminding them that there would be a cost
- 9:36Speaker 4: to following him, and that they should count the cost.
- 9:40Speaker 4: But then, as if to demonstrate that a proper accounting
- 9:43Speaker 4: of the cost would always prove worth the hardship for
- 9:46Speaker 4: the sake of God's kingdom, Jesus told two more parables.
- 9:51Speaker 4: One about a treasure buried in a field. The man
- 9:54Speaker 4: who found the treasure would gladly sell everything that he
- 9:57Speaker 4: had to buy the field and claim the treasure. In
- 10:01Speaker 4: the same way, he compared the kingdom of God to
- 10:03Speaker 4: a pearl of great value. When a man found the pearl,
- 10:06Speaker 4: he also gave up everything to get this precious pearl.
- 10:11Speaker 4: The lesson was clear. No cost could ever equal the
- 10:15Speaker 4: greatness of God's kingdom. Any suffering or hardship pales in
- 10:19Speaker 4: comparison to the wonders and the glories of the kingdom
- 10:21Speaker 4: of God. Counting the cost isn't a matter of deciding
- 10:25Speaker 4: if it's worth it to follow Jesus. It's about realizing
- 10:29Speaker 4: that when we have even a basic understanding of the
- 10:32Speaker 4: riches of the gospel, we will willingly give up anything
- 10:35Speaker 4: and everything to follow Jesus. No reserve, no retreats, no regrets. Finally,
- 10:43Speaker 4: Jesus drove home his point by telling a parable about
- 10:46Speaker 4: fishermen who pulled in their nets full of fish, some
- 10:49Speaker 4: good and some rotten. The good fish were kept while
- 10:52Speaker 4: the rotten fish were tossed into a fire. When we
- 10:56Speaker 4: think about it and understand the meaning of the words
- 10:58Speaker 4: of Jesus, it's clear that the cost of not following
- 11:02Speaker 4: him is infinitely greater than any monetary cost of following Jesus.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Dear God, we thank you for today's scripture and the
- 11:10Speaker 4: stories that Jesus told in order that we might understand
- 11:14Speaker 4: who he is and why he came and how we
- 11:16Speaker 4: can know Him. Thank you for calling us into your kingdom.
- 11:20Speaker 4: May you rule and reign in our hearts. May we
- 11:23Speaker 4: be willing to pay any price, count every cost, that
- 11:26Speaker 4: we might follow you, because we know it is worth it.
