- 1:49Speaker 1: In this edition of Disguised Coverage, we will be diving
- 1:53Speaker 1: into several pieces of kind of the Buffalo Bill's victory
- 1:58Speaker 1: in Pittsburgh against the Steelers this past but more so
- 2:00Speaker 1: kind of talking about what it means for this team
- 2:03Speaker 1: going forward, especially with regard to several prominent areas that
- 2:08Speaker 1: were on display positively and negatively against the Pittsburgh Steelers,
- 2:12Speaker 1: and kind of putting those into perspective with where they
- 2:16Speaker 1: are as a team. You know, how much of you know,
- 2:19Speaker 1: the performances that we saw in several of these areas
- 2:21Speaker 1: for individuals, for size of the ball, for certain areas,
- 2:24Speaker 1: how much of it was due to the opponent they
- 2:26Speaker 1: were playing the game, the elements versus you know, are
- 2:29Speaker 1: we starting to see some course correction? Are we starting
- 2:32Speaker 1: to see some improvement? Are we starting to see some
- 2:34Speaker 1: things that are giving us breadcrumbs and clues that, you
- 2:38Speaker 1: know what, things are starting to trend up, Things are
- 2:40Speaker 1: starting to move in the right direction, which would be
- 2:43Speaker 1: phenomenal to see as this team looks to make a
- 2:46Speaker 1: push for the playoffs and kind of get themselves right.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And so that's where you know. The theme of this
- 2:51Speaker 1: episode came in terms of the title with you know,
- 2:54Speaker 1: are the Buffalo Bills Back on track? I thought it
- 2:55Speaker 1: would be fun to dive into, you know, a lot
- 2:58Speaker 1: of the elements that we've talked about in the show regularly,
- 3:00Speaker 1: especially last week, in kind of the last week's theme
- 3:03Speaker 1: of the episode of you know, how did we get
- 3:04Speaker 1: here and talking about the struggles that we're seeing with
- 3:07Speaker 1: this team and how it's more than just this season
- 3:11Speaker 1: or an individual game, how it's more systemic, how it
- 3:13Speaker 1: starts really from the top down, and it goes from
- 3:16Speaker 1: roster build and construction to all the way to identity
- 3:18Speaker 1: and philosophy and player development and scheme and structure and
- 3:22Speaker 1: all those pieces. So I thought this would be a
- 3:24Speaker 1: good follow up to that, considering what we saw for
- 3:26Speaker 1: the Buffalo Bills in Pittsburgh. That's a funny comment that
- 3:29Speaker 1: just came in from Bill's camp who said, Ken the
- 3:31Speaker 1: Bills were the same play again. We're going to talk
- 3:34Speaker 1: about that tonight in this episode, as we do here
- 3:37Speaker 1: on this show. It kind of has come about organically
- 3:40Speaker 1: a bit. For those tuning in live, Thank you drop
- 3:43Speaker 1: Alke if you have not already, but if you're joining
- 3:46Speaker 1: us here live, Questions, thoughts, comments, concerns, anything and everything
- 3:49Speaker 1: you folks have on your mind, put it into the
- 3:52Speaker 1: live chat. We've kind of started off a good chunk
- 3:54Speaker 1: of these episodes with a lot of discourse and engagement
- 3:57Speaker 1: and back and forth, which I think is understandable given
- 3:59Speaker 1: the the course that the Bills have run this year
- 4:03Speaker 1: so far. And so yeah, I'm gonna keep that theme going.
- 4:05Speaker 1: We always like to make these episodes very engagement focus
- 4:08Speaker 1: as much as I humanly and possibly can. So questions, thoughts, comments, concerns,
- 4:12Speaker 1: put it into the chat. As always, super chats get
- 4:14Speaker 1: priority because I respect the monetary donation, and the color
- 4:17Speaker 1: distracts me from my notes and it gives me a
- 4:21Speaker 1: little alert. But I would get to anything and everything
- 4:22Speaker 1: as much as humanly possible. And so let's dive into
- 4:25Speaker 1: some of the comments here and questions and thoughts and
- 4:29Speaker 1: back and forth, and then I'm going to dive into
- 4:31Speaker 1: the topics that I got and some stats and some
- 4:34Speaker 1: metrics and some graphics and some scheme and structure, conversation
- 4:37Speaker 1: and a whole bunch of good stuff. Well and maybe
- 4:40Speaker 1: not some good stuff, depending on I view this team.
- 4:42Speaker 1: In certain players grabbing this comment here from RJ. What's
- 4:45Speaker 1: up RJ? RJ says, hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Appreciate you. Hope you did as well. R J says,
- 4:49Speaker 1: I am glad we won, and I understand. I understand
- 4:52Speaker 1: they needed that game that need Oh I am fumbling
- 4:55Speaker 1: all over myself already. I am glad we won, and
- 4:58Speaker 1: I understand they needed that game plan and due to
- 5:00Speaker 1: the injuries on offense, but it still concerns me that
- 5:04Speaker 1: they only scored nineteen points on offense. I think that's
- 5:07Speaker 1: a a fair concern to have. It ties into one
- 5:11Speaker 1: of my main points in this episode. I think, if
- 5:14Speaker 1: you know, I don't want to give away too much,
- 5:15Speaker 1: but if you know, I don't even think it's a
- 5:18Speaker 1: silver lining. On the one hand, the weather and the elements,
- 5:22Speaker 1: and the injuries to pass catchers, especially important ones no
- 5:26Speaker 1: Josh Palmer, no Dunkin Kaid, the injuries to both of
- 5:29Speaker 1: your starting tackles, and knowing what the Steelers have at
- 5:33Speaker 1: edge and how that can kind of impact you and
- 5:35Speaker 1: attack you. I think it did make sense for that
- 5:38Speaker 1: kind of game plan coming in, and it's awesome that
- 5:41Speaker 1: they needed to run the ball in this game, and
- 5:44Speaker 1: they were able to run this ball, run the ball
- 5:46Speaker 1: in this game to a record setting performance in Pittsburgh
- 5:50Speaker 1: from a franchise perspective and that individual stadium perspective. But
- 5:55Speaker 1: on the other hand, and again we're going to dive
- 5:58Speaker 1: into it in this episode, there was several areas of sluggishness.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I also think the run game, for as good as
- 6:04Speaker 1: it was, once you dive into it and watch the
- 6:06Speaker 1: tape and then pair that with the metrics, it wasn't
- 6:09Speaker 1: as great as you may assume. You might see, like,
- 6:12Speaker 1: oh my god, two hundred and forty nine rushing yards
- 6:14Speaker 1: and hear the record conversations, you must think like or
- 6:16Speaker 1: you might think, man, they must have had like an
- 6:18Speaker 1: amazing week statistically or from an advanced metrics standpoint, and
- 6:21Speaker 1: it was not that not the case. And I just
- 6:23Speaker 1: think when you watch the tape, there were some more
- 6:26Speaker 1: negative runs than you kind of might think. And then
- 6:28Speaker 1: if you tie that into the pass game, I think
- 6:30Speaker 1: the success of the run game and the victory in
- 6:33Speaker 1: general really glossed over and rightfully or not rightfully understandably so,
- 6:38Speaker 1: glossed over the struggles from a pass game perspective that
- 6:42Speaker 1: we saw once again. But I think that's a fair comment,
- 6:45Speaker 1: Our Jane. We're going to dive into it. Charles says,
- 6:47Speaker 1: good evening to everyone accept the College FOOTBA playoff committee.
- 6:51Speaker 1: This distracted me when I initially did my intro, and
- 6:53Speaker 1: it's why I kind of stumbled over myself a bit.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I didn't see what's happened. Yet as a Miami fan,
- 6:58Speaker 1: I'm expecting to be frustrated disappointed. I mean, they only
- 7:01Speaker 1: have theirselves to blame. They should have took care of
- 7:05Speaker 1: business against Louisville and or SMU, they did not. I
- 7:08Speaker 1: think what's more annoying is how everything shook out this
- 7:11Speaker 1: past weekend and knowing that Duke is going to the
- 7:13Speaker 1: ACC Championship and Miami got no help from LSU. Realistically
- 7:18Speaker 1: could have beaten Oklahoma they did not. Alabama took care
- 7:22Speaker 1: of business in a close game against Auburn. Notre Dame
- 7:24Speaker 1: did their thing. Even though Miami should be ahead of
- 7:26Speaker 1: Notre Dame because they beat them, I think that should
- 7:30Speaker 1: hold more weight. I'm expecting to be disappointed, but I
- 7:33Speaker 1: don't know what the results are as of now. Come
- 7:37Speaker 1: in here core question here, I should say, am I
- 7:39Speaker 1: crazy for thinking the Bills would be playing with house
- 7:42Speaker 1: money if they make the playoffs, and that would be
- 7:43Speaker 1: a good thing for them. I think you can debate
- 7:48Speaker 1: whether or not they're playing with house money, but I
- 7:50Speaker 1: am very much. I said it going into this year,
- 7:53Speaker 1: I've said it throughout the year. I want the division
- 7:58Speaker 1: title for the sake of the streak and no one
- 8:01Speaker 1: else getting it right. I every fan base is annoying,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and that includes Bills fans. Like there's a lot of
- 8:06Speaker 1: toxicity and terribleness purely from a fandom perspective. I hate
- 8:11Speaker 1: any conversation that starts with like, oh, are the Patriots back? Oh? Winning? Like,
- 8:16Speaker 1: I'm annoyed that they're probably gonna win the AFC East.
- 8:18Speaker 1: And I wanted the Bills to continue to win the
- 8:20Speaker 1: AFC's for the sake of like the streak and continue
- 8:22Speaker 1: it going. You know'll make it six seven eight, six seven, eight, nine, ten,
- 8:26Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. But my thought going into
- 8:29Speaker 1: this year was, really, they could be nine and eight,
- 8:32Speaker 1: they could be ten and seven, whatever. I don't care.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Be the best version of yourself going into the playoffs
- 8:39Speaker 1: and in the playoffs, and I do not care what happens.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I in a perfect world, I wanted the division title
- 8:45Speaker 1: for the sake of the division title in the streak,
- 8:47Speaker 1: I would have loved to get multiple or at least
- 8:49Speaker 1: one more playoff game at high Mark slash Ralph Wilson
- 8:53Speaker 1: slash Rich Stadium. In a dream world, they would have
- 8:56Speaker 1: gotten the one seed and hosted the AFC Championship, had
- 8:59Speaker 1: gone to the Super Bowl and close down that stadium
- 9:04Speaker 1: with all that history and the success they've had there.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Granted the drought happen there as well, but kind of
- 9:08Speaker 1: going back to those nineties Bills teams and that stadium
- 9:10Speaker 1: gets a send off with an AFC Championship game and
- 9:13Speaker 1: a Super Bowl berth. I wanted all that storybook kind
- 9:16Speaker 1: of feel and ending for them, but logistically be the
- 9:20Speaker 1: best version of yourself going into the playoffs and in
- 9:22Speaker 1: the playoffs, and I did not care. I do think
- 9:24Speaker 1: that they make the playoffs. They, like several other teams,
- 9:28Speaker 1: are dangerous. I know Baltimore laid an absolute egg against
- 9:34Speaker 1: the Bengals. The ironically had a playoff performance against the
- 9:36Speaker 1: Bengals last week, and I know they've always been a
- 9:38Speaker 1: question in the playoffs. But I think the Ravens are
- 9:40Speaker 1: in a similar boat. And I think there's a multitude
- 9:43Speaker 1: of teams in the AFC where you can make the
- 9:45Speaker 1: case that they can win the AFC. I think the
- 9:48Speaker 1: AFC is extremely wide open, which is both good and
- 9:51Speaker 1: bad for the Bills. But yeah, if they make it,
- 9:54Speaker 1: I don't see why they can't get out of the AFC.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I could also see them losing in the wildcard round
- 10:00Speaker 1: and us having to have a very difficult or multiple
- 10:03Speaker 1: difficult conversations this offseason. But yeah, just get to the
- 10:06Speaker 1: playoffs and let it come to you. Whatever happens happens.
- 10:09Speaker 1: And I think you kind of tie it into Yeah,
- 10:11Speaker 1: I think they are playing with house money a little bit,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and who knows, Yeah, maybe them being doubted a little bit,
- 10:16Speaker 1: maybe having all road games, not being you know, at
- 10:19Speaker 1: the comforts of home, or being you know, applauded and
- 10:21Speaker 1: talked about as a strong, you know, contender, Maybe everybody
- 10:24Speaker 1: kind of forgetting about him and putting them on the
- 10:25Speaker 1: back burner. Maybe that does help them a little bit.
- 10:27Speaker 1: And we know Sean McDermott is a huge fan of
- 10:29Speaker 1: bulletin board material and motivational things. And if you believe
- 10:34Speaker 1: the Bills tapped into some stuff after Patrick Queen hit
- 10:36Speaker 1: Josh Allen, you know who knows maybe that stuff is real.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Bill's camp. Earlier he has saying can the Bills run
- 10:42Speaker 1: the same play again? We're gonna talk about that, especially
- 10:44Speaker 1: from run game perspective. I have I charted well, I
- 10:49Speaker 1: chart everything every week, but I brought a bunch of
- 10:51Speaker 1: my charting notes from the run game perspective into this episode.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So we're gonna talk about midzone, We're gonna talk about
- 10:56Speaker 1: some inside zone, We're gonna talk about duo, all that
- 10:58Speaker 1: type of stuff. Obviously, our jam hat to ask you
- 11:00Speaker 1: this on Twitter because you quote two to one of
- 11:02Speaker 1: my things, as RJ here says, but they ran the
- 11:04Speaker 1: same play quote unquote twenty nine times. What is the
- 11:06Speaker 1: twenty nine times referencing I tune out a lot of
- 11:09Speaker 1: everything until I'm done with the film. I know you
- 11:11Speaker 1: quote two this on Twitter and I meant to respond
- 11:15Speaker 1: to you and I didn't, So I'm gonna ask you
- 11:16Speaker 1: now because you're here, what is the twenty nine times?
- 11:19Speaker 1: Who said that? And where is that coming from? I
- 11:22Speaker 1: obviously feel like I missed it somewhere. Just a tipik
- 11:25Speaker 1: News says, what's your spahetti possy? I don't know if
- 11:27Speaker 1: this is a joker not but I don't like spaghetti.
- 11:28Speaker 1: It creeps me out. I don't like the stringing nature
- 11:31Speaker 1: of but I love pasta. I'm Sicilian, so I eat
- 11:33Speaker 1: a lot of pasta. It's just because spaghetti is No
- 11:36Speaker 1: Bill's camps is. Watching that game, I felt like I
- 11:38Speaker 1: was spamming the same run play on Madden. You are
- 11:40Speaker 1: kind of accurate in a good way. But also Pat Jeffrey,
- 11:44Speaker 1: what's up? Says Morgan Fox? Active this week? Maybe Bosa out? Yeah,
- 11:47Speaker 1: Bosa's got a hammy, soft muscle injuries, soft tissue injuries,
- 11:53Speaker 1: extremely volatile, hard to predict. The cold and the elements
- 11:58Speaker 1: that helps you less. I think there's a good chance
- 12:02Speaker 1: Bosas out this week. We'll see. Yeah, maybe Morgan Fox
- 12:05Speaker 1: gets activated. I'm really worried of Bosas out. Even though
- 12:08Speaker 1: he's been playing with one hand, he's still very effective,
- 12:10Speaker 1: as we saw with that you know, sack and force
- 12:12Speaker 1: fumble of Aaron Rodgers. That really completely turned the trajectory
- 12:15Speaker 1: of that game around. Man. Yeah, uh, between the hand
- 12:20Speaker 1: and the hammy, it starts all. I feel like all
- 12:22Speaker 1: the Bosa, it's not major, but all the Bosas. He's
- 12:26Speaker 1: had a major injuries in his career, but a lot
- 12:28Speaker 1: of boas stuff is usually like a nagging back injury,
- 12:30Speaker 1: a glue, like a hammy, a hip. It's these injuries
- 12:33Speaker 1: that he can play through, but they diminish his impact.
- 12:35Speaker 1: And I feel like we're getting that now with the
- 12:37Speaker 1: hand or the wrist, and now the hammy. Frustrated Charles says,
- 12:41Speaker 1: I don't think the Bills are fixed. They have real flaws,
- 12:43Speaker 1: but so does every other team. Doesn't mean they can't
- 12:45Speaker 1: get hot and win it all, especially with seventeen ak
- 12:48Speaker 1: Josh Allen, Yeah, I agree. I think the two best
- 12:51Speaker 1: teams in football and the two most complete teams in
- 12:54Speaker 1: football are the Los Angeles Rams and they Seattle Seahawks.
- 13:01Speaker 1: But I think both those teams are beatable, as evidenced
- 13:03Speaker 1: by the Rams losen to the Panthers this week. I
- 13:06Speaker 1: think the AFC is more open than the NFC. I
- 13:09Speaker 1: really do think the NFC is the Rams and the
- 13:10Speaker 1: Seahawks and everybody else, just like I think it is
- 13:13Speaker 1: in the NFL as well, and in the AFC. One
- 13:19Speaker 1: through oh, I just forget it now, Like what one
- 13:21Speaker 1: through eight? Who may one through seven? Who make it
- 13:24Speaker 1: odd number? Always throws me off. You can make the
- 13:26Speaker 1: case for anybody depending on how it shakes out. But
- 13:28Speaker 1: whoever sneaks in as the seven or the sixth seed,
- 13:32Speaker 1: I think they have just as good shot as whoever
- 13:33Speaker 1: ends up as the one or the two, or the
- 13:35Speaker 1: three or the four. The AFC is wide wide open.
- 13:39Speaker 1: What's up, Joshua? Joshua says, Hey, I don't mind the
- 13:42Speaker 1: repetitive nature of the offense this weekend because it worked
- 13:44Speaker 1: and I expect to seed again against the Bengals. Do
- 13:47Speaker 1: you have any concerns of our identity versus good d lines, Yes,
- 13:53Speaker 1: mainly from a past perspective and how that ties into
- 13:57Speaker 1: the run because the book is still the especially when
- 14:00Speaker 1: the Bills played better defenses or defenses with good or
- 14:03Speaker 1: athletic corners, the book is still going to be, don't
- 14:07Speaker 1: let the run game beat you. Dare them to beat
- 14:10Speaker 1: you with their wide receivers. Dare them to beat you
- 14:13Speaker 1: on the outside and or vertical and good and or
- 14:17Speaker 1: better defenses or teams with athletic or good corners are
- 14:20Speaker 1: gonna have a good chance to do that to the
- 14:22Speaker 1: Bills pass game, stemy it load the box with numbers
- 14:27Speaker 1: and then you're gonna get into scenarios like they got
- 14:29Speaker 1: into Baltimore last year like they got into Houston last
- 14:32Speaker 1: year like they got into Houston this year. Where you're
- 14:35Speaker 1: going to be in these third and non passing situations,
- 14:38Speaker 1: or third and known passing down in distances, and or
- 14:41Speaker 1: third and long where good defensive lines can tee off
- 14:43Speaker 1: on you and game up you know your guys. From
- 14:46Speaker 1: a protection rules standpoint or just from a one on
- 14:48Speaker 1: one standpoint, I think this offensive line is very good.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I think they are well coached, and I do think
- 14:53Speaker 1: they have good players, But I don't think the Bill.
- 14:55Speaker 1: I think the Bills offensive line is very good as
- 14:57Speaker 1: a group with several good individual players, but I don't
- 15:00Speaker 1: think they're this standout like group that's loaded with like
- 15:03Speaker 1: all pro caliber guys. They execute well, they're well coached,
- 15:06Speaker 1: and they function good as a unit. If they go
- 15:08Speaker 1: up against you know, good defensive line that have studs
- 15:11Speaker 1: or stars, you're gonna need some chip help from a
- 15:14Speaker 1: tight end or from a running back. You're gonna need
- 15:16Speaker 1: to do more six and seven man protection type stuff.
- 15:18Speaker 1: And if you can't run the ball, then you just
- 15:22Speaker 1: make yourself more siloed and predictable, and I think that
- 15:25Speaker 1: gets worrisome. So I'm more from a pass game standpoint,
- 15:28Speaker 1: but from a run game standpoint too, especially with a
- 15:30Speaker 1: team that has like people movers on the interior or
- 15:33Speaker 1: guys that are like mean and physical and nasty allah
- 15:37Speaker 1: kind of what the Patriots are where they're spine. I'm
- 15:39Speaker 1: talking interior defensive line, through the linebackers, through the safeties.
- 15:42Speaker 1: It's all about downhill mashers. I do have a bit
- 15:46Speaker 1: of a concern with that aspect as well. Well, you
- 15:50Speaker 1: know what Williams says, was the pass rush as unproductive
- 15:53Speaker 1: as people are saying. I am not sure if I
- 15:55Speaker 1: am blinded by the Bosa strip sack and the results.
- 15:59Speaker 1: That's a good question. Let uh grab some data here.
- 16:06Speaker 1: I looked it up earlier and I told myself, you
- 16:08Speaker 1: know what, I should write this down, and you know what,
- 16:11Speaker 1: I did not write that down. Let's go to pressure
- 16:14Speaker 1: rate for week thirteen. So week thirteen, the Buffalo Bills,
- 16:22Speaker 1: out of thirty two NFL teams were thirtieth in pressure
- 16:24Speaker 1: rate at twenty four percent, which I think tracks with
- 16:29Speaker 1: what you saw on the tape. Again, the Steelers in
- 16:32Speaker 1: their protection and kind of how they do things with
- 16:34Speaker 1: you know, more bodies there, I think lends to that
- 16:37Speaker 1: as well, But yeah, there wasn't a ton of individual
- 16:39Speaker 1: wins from a past rush standpoint. I think you saw
- 16:44Speaker 1: good performances against the run, which we're going to talk about.
- 16:46Speaker 1: But yeah, it's funny. I you know, I knew the
- 16:49Speaker 1: numbers were starting, and that's why I wanted to go
- 16:51Speaker 1: and pull it up on next gen. Uh yeah, twenty
- 16:53Speaker 1: four percent pressure rate, which again was thirtieth on the week.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And what else? What else subscribes some more numbers. Well,
- 17:04Speaker 1: we're here a sack rate of four percent, which was
- 17:07Speaker 1: twenty third. An average time to pressure not bad two
- 17:12Speaker 1: point nine three Well two point nine three seconds. Three
- 17:14Speaker 1: seconds is a lot of time, but that was oh yeah,
- 17:16Speaker 1: so that was the tenth highest on the week. I'm reversed.
- 17:19Speaker 1: They were twenty third in average time to pressure and
- 17:24Speaker 1: from a get off standpoint, number twenty fourth and average
- 17:28Speaker 1: getoff at zero point nine two, so almost a full second.
- 17:31Speaker 1: So yeah, not a not a great passwords performance. I'm
- 17:35Speaker 1: going to continue to say it. Joey Bosa being hurt
- 17:39Speaker 1: impacts this passwords group a lot. He really kind of
- 17:42Speaker 1: was the saving grace. I think Groot has been better
- 17:44Speaker 1: as a rusher than he's gotten credit for this year,
- 17:47Speaker 1: but he's still not an edge one is a pass rusher.
- 17:51Speaker 1: I put out a tweet last week, you know, I
- 17:52Speaker 1: think amongst like ninety something qualifying edges, he's like thirty
- 17:57Speaker 1: to thirty fifth in most advanced metrics, like talking about
- 18:00Speaker 1: efficiency metrics, total pressures, all that kind of stuff. Sacks
- 18:03Speaker 1: he's lower. I think he's like ty for eighty first
- 18:05Speaker 1: with sacks or something like that league wide, not just
- 18:08Speaker 1: amongst those ninety edg rushers. But you just don't have
- 18:11Speaker 1: that impact. Ed Oliver's hurt, like who's providing you that
- 18:14Speaker 1: pass rush? Dion Walker is doing more run defense stuff,
- 18:16Speaker 1: so he's not getting a ton of penetration. T J.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Sanders is playing on the edge, saw some flashes against Pittsburgh,
- 18:21Speaker 1: but he's still not a needle mover. Larry Ogunjovi's kind
- 18:24Speaker 1: of just there. Aj Panessa, I think, is quietly doing
- 18:29Speaker 1: some things off the edge, but he's playing run defense
- 18:31Speaker 1: and doing a lot of early down stuff, so he's
- 18:33Speaker 1: not really this hunter. Third you don't have Michael Hoyt.
- 18:37Speaker 1: It's I think it's kind of scary. I think it's
- 18:40Speaker 1: kind of scary from a pass Russ perspective with Bosa
- 18:43Speaker 1: being hurt, and you're seeing it in the numbers week
- 18:46Speaker 1: after week. They've been poor since he got hurt. What
- 18:49Speaker 1: midway through the Kansas City game in week nine, Week
- 18:51Speaker 1: ten and after, it's been bad from a pressure standpoint,
- 18:54Speaker 1: and this week against the Steelers was not great. Good
- 19:01Speaker 1: comment here. The Bills game plan was to control the ball,
- 19:04Speaker 1: lead the clock, and get out of town. The turnover
- 19:05Speaker 1: is hurt in the first half, but they dominated the
- 19:07Speaker 1: time of possession. They absolutely did when they had to.
- 19:09Speaker 1: They ran the ball, They controlled the ball, they controlled
- 19:11Speaker 1: the clock, they controlled the line of scrimmage on both
- 19:14Speaker 1: sides of the ball, and did the heck Kay Morrey said, no, An,
- 19:16Speaker 1: don't go there into the six seven sixty seven. It's
- 19:19Speaker 1: good stuff. Josh says, I wanted it for the streak,
- 19:24Speaker 1: meaning the division title, too, but I also wanted to
- 19:26Speaker 1: host playoff games because home games seem to be such
- 19:28Speaker 1: a big advantage for the Bills. They do, and I
- 19:31Speaker 1: know there's been variables in their last two home playoff losses,
- 19:35Speaker 1: but we've seen this team lose with the Bengals in
- 19:37Speaker 1: the playoffs. We've seen this team lose with the Chiefs
- 19:38Speaker 1: in the playoffs. I want the home field advantage. I'd
- 19:41Speaker 1: rather have it than not. I don't think it's the
- 19:43Speaker 1: end all be all or the saving grace, which kind
- 19:46Speaker 1: of falls into my overall feelings as well. Charles says,
- 19:50Speaker 1: right now, an AFC six seed is a trip to Jacksonville.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Sign me up. I would take that. The Jags are
- 19:55Speaker 1: an enigma. You might go into Jacksonville in the playoffs
- 19:58Speaker 1: and get absolutely how or you might absolutely house Jacksonville.
- 20:02Speaker 1: They are okay, they continue to be an enigma and
- 20:05Speaker 1: such a wonky team. Are you gonna get you know,
- 20:07Speaker 1: the Trevor Lawrence that makes like throws that only three
- 20:10Speaker 1: or four dudes can make? Or do you get the
- 20:12Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence that is missing throws that no one should
- 20:15Speaker 1: miss in the NFL? Uh? Yeah? Ah. Connor says Shack
- 20:20Speaker 1: Thompson feels like such a good piece for the Bills
- 20:22Speaker 1: this season. Should he be considered for an extension? I
- 20:24Speaker 1: say yes, We're going to dive into a good chunk
- 20:26Speaker 1: of Shack loss in here in this episode. In just
- 20:28Speaker 1: a little bit bum bum bum, Jeffrey says, are we
- 20:31Speaker 1: rooting for Casey over Houston? This week? Logistically? I think
- 20:35Speaker 1: we should because you want Houston to pick up another
- 20:38Speaker 1: loss and stay away from the Bills, knowing that they
- 20:39Speaker 1: have the head to head in the advantage and they're
- 20:41Speaker 1: only behind the Bills by one in the lost column.
- 20:44Speaker 1: But this isn't even just from a fan perspective, from
- 20:47Speaker 1: a heart perspective. Until Kansas City is dead. I am
- 20:51Speaker 1: rooting against Kansas City until they are in the grave,
- 20:55Speaker 1: dead and dusted, and their head has been cut off
- 20:58Speaker 1: and their heart has been removed, until they are six
- 21:01Speaker 1: feet under and they cannot return. I am picking against
- 21:06Speaker 1: Kansas City. I am not gonna play this game of Well,
- 21:08Speaker 1: Kansas City doesn't look good. Who cares if they limp
- 21:10Speaker 1: into the playoffs or Yeah, Kansas City can win this week.
- 21:13Speaker 1: They still got a hard schedule. It's the odds say
- 21:15Speaker 1: they're not gonna make it. I don't care. I'm rooting
- 21:18Speaker 1: for whoever's against Kansas City until the king is dead.
- 21:22Speaker 1: They are the king, and so I'm rooting for Houston. Also,
- 21:24Speaker 1: I kind of like Houston, which is not helpful for
- 21:27Speaker 1: the Bills. They got their defense is so fun. I
- 21:29Speaker 1: love Kamari Lassiter and Will Anderson. But last year, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 21:35Speaker 1: bum bum bum what else. Ah, thank you every multiple
- 21:39Speaker 1: people answering Kay Moore, He said, some film watching account
- 21:44Speaker 1: Steelers base said it, and oh, I guess the twenty
- 21:47Speaker 1: nine times not a Steelers count but if oh an
- 21:49Speaker 1: account called film watchers, I've never heard of it, and
- 21:53Speaker 1: I go follow up here. I love how everybody's so collaborative.
- 21:56Speaker 1: The twenty nine times thing was a video from a
- 21:58Speaker 1: Steelers film breakdown kid, or maybe that film watcher's account.
- 22:01Speaker 1: In reality, they ran a bunch out of the same formation.
- 22:04Speaker 1: He didn't run the same comp but didn't run the
- 22:06Speaker 1: same concept. Oh. Eric said he was wrong. Oh, I
- 22:08Speaker 1: wonder what did they say? If anybody remembers what did?
- 22:13Speaker 1: I wonder what play they said? They ran over and
- 22:15Speaker 1: over again. I'm very interested now now I kind of
- 22:19Speaker 1: want to like know even more. Oh, good job. ARJ
- 22:22Speaker 1: came saying to you have twenty nine times a video
- 22:25Speaker 1: film breakdown from someone on YouTube. They said, the bills
- 22:27Speaker 1: ran the same and now everyone's running with it. Oh,
- 22:29Speaker 1: I did not know that. That's also what happens too,
- 22:31Speaker 1: when people get the stuff like first and they just
- 22:33Speaker 1: throw things out there. It dominates the new cycle of
- 22:35Speaker 1: the narrative or whatever. I wonder. You know what's funny
- 22:38Speaker 1: is I said during the game, because essentially what they
- 22:41Speaker 1: did and we're going to get into this in the
- 22:42Speaker 1: episode and talk about what it means for the grander scale.
- 22:45Speaker 1: But they run and this is what they've done for
- 22:47Speaker 1: a couple of years under Brady. They can run duo
- 22:50Speaker 1: and then mid zone week from the exact same formation.
- 22:55Speaker 1: And you know, if you're trying to picture in your head,
- 22:57Speaker 1: and I put it on Twitter, so if you want
- 22:58Speaker 1: to see you go to my Twitter or loose Guy.
- 23:01Speaker 1: But usually there's trips or a bunch to one side.
- 23:07Speaker 1: We'll kind of play it, say it's to the right.
- 23:08Speaker 1: So say in the Steelers game, you'll have a good example, right,
- 23:10Speaker 1: Say it's you know, Jackson Hawes on the line of
- 23:14Speaker 1: scrimmage in line tight end and then you've got Khalil
- 23:16Speaker 1: Shakir and Terrell Shavers right next to him. Then you've
- 23:19Speaker 1: got Brandon Cooks all the way on the as the
- 23:21Speaker 1: X all by himself who cares. So that's the strong
- 23:23Speaker 1: side of the formation where the trips is where you
- 23:26Speaker 1: got that bunch, where you've got Hawes, Shakir and Shavers. Right,
- 23:28Speaker 1: they'll run duo to that side, And that's a run
- 23:32Speaker 1: that they ran nineteen times in this game. So that's
- 23:35Speaker 1: that run where you're running play side, Cook is reading
- 23:38Speaker 1: that linebacker the play side linebacker. You are getting those
- 23:41Speaker 1: double teams Cook. For those trying to put in perspective
- 23:44Speaker 1: as well, what I'm saying doesn't make sense. Those are
- 23:46Speaker 1: the runs where through the second quarter and on where
- 23:49Speaker 1: he was immediately he was going like straight up field
- 23:52Speaker 1: and bouncing it outside and attacking Joey Porter and whoever
- 23:54Speaker 1: corner was on the outside, usually Joey Porter, sometimes it's
- 23:57Speaker 1: Sante Samuel who had a couple of really good tackles.
- 24:00Speaker 1: But they can run duo from that formation and from
- 24:04Speaker 1: the exact same look, the exact same presentation and same
- 24:07Speaker 1: personnel and all that. They can run mid zone to
- 24:11Speaker 1: the opposite side, to the weak side, same presentation, so
- 24:14Speaker 1: whatever it looks like, they can kind of pick and choose,
- 24:17Speaker 1: which helps them with tendencies and tells and all that,
- 24:20Speaker 1: because if you're overplaying your hand for the duo side
- 24:23Speaker 1: or for the midzone week side, they can flip it
- 24:25Speaker 1: at the line. You can alert that you can can
- 24:27Speaker 1: and kind of if you have two plays kind of
- 24:29Speaker 1: baked into one another, let alone just kind of calling
- 24:31Speaker 1: it off the hip like Brady does and going from there.
- 24:35Speaker 1: But they also do a little bit of a change
- 24:37Speaker 1: up as well by doing more of an inside zone
- 24:39Speaker 1: track off the mid zone look this game, but yeah,
- 24:41Speaker 1: they run duo and then the mid zone week stuff
- 24:45Speaker 1: from They can run it from the exact same presentation,
- 24:48Speaker 1: but they don't look the same at all. So I
- 24:50Speaker 1: don't know how someone could say that. And you know
- 24:53Speaker 1: what's funny is from my charting, and I'm going to
- 24:56Speaker 1: get this in more in depth, they ran mid zone six,
- 25:00Speaker 1: they ran inside zone five times, and then they ran
- 25:03Speaker 1: duo nineteen times. Those added together are thirty one. So
- 25:07Speaker 1: I'm guessing that account thought all of those were the same.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Hence the twenty nine because it's close. I find that
- 25:12Speaker 1: two coincidental, but they don't look the same post snaps,
- 25:15Speaker 1: so I don't I don't know how you'd get that
- 25:18Speaker 1: unless he counted the inside zone ones. But again it's
- 25:20Speaker 1: to the difference. It's it's just different rules. You're not
- 25:22Speaker 1: getting big on big blocking on that side. It's not
- 25:24Speaker 1: running the tight end side. But teach dhow Ah Joey says,
- 25:31Speaker 1: I want to buy back in because I love the Bills,
- 25:33Speaker 1: but this Heckle and Jeckyll team scares me. I one
- 25:36Speaker 1: thousand percent agree. Travis says, I love it when Cook
- 25:39Speaker 1: slammed his helmet into Porter's helmet after the Steelers hit
- 25:41Speaker 1: Josh Late. Yeah, a little bit. It was chippy, and
- 25:44Speaker 1: I like that. I like the cold. I like games
- 25:46Speaker 1: in the cold played on natural grass and the chippiness.
- 25:48Speaker 1: I want it, I want it, I want and I
- 25:50Speaker 1: want it. Claude, what's up? Claude? Claude says for the
- 25:53Speaker 1: Bills to win the Super Bowl, they need four consecutive
- 25:55Speaker 1: games with good run defense and Josh Allen to get
- 25:57Speaker 1: really hot. In an ideal world, yeah, you have both.
- 26:01Speaker 1: I really just think it's down to match up more
- 26:03Speaker 1: than anything. If they get the right matchups, I think
- 26:07Speaker 1: they can not coast, but I think they can be okay. Like,
- 26:13Speaker 1: for for instance, I know Daniel Jones isn't scaring anyone,
- 26:17Speaker 1: but Stichen's a good offensive mind. They have good pass catchers,
- 26:21Speaker 1: and they have a crazy good run game. Like I
- 26:22Speaker 1: don't want the Colts. I don't want to face the Colts.
- 26:26Speaker 1: You know, if you get the right matchups, I think
- 26:28Speaker 1: that's okay, but yeah, they have to show up the
- 26:30Speaker 1: run defense, which I don't think is naturally a realistically
- 26:33Speaker 1: gonna happen, although it could. But you really just need
- 26:37Speaker 1: you need the run game to do its thing, and
- 26:39Speaker 1: you need Allen to get hot and the pass catchers
- 26:41Speaker 1: to be healthy, and then you kind of hope and
- 26:42Speaker 1: pray for the best. David says, I just want to say,
- 26:47Speaker 1: I'm really sick of mesh Fair. Also, did anyone watch
- 26:49Speaker 1: Kurt Warner's breakdown of Josh's interceptions? I counted two out
- 26:52Speaker 1: of five on Josh. I have not watched that breakdown,
- 26:54Speaker 1: but Josh has made errors this year throughout the year
- 26:59Speaker 1: that are on him him. Yes, the scheme and structure
- 27:01Speaker 1: and play calls and concepts and layering and sequencing aren't great.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Yes the weapons aren't great, but he's also kind of
- 27:09Speaker 1: put himself into bad spots regardless. Charles's MVP of the
- 27:14Speaker 1: Steelers game was Cam Heyward never poked the bear. You know,
- 27:16Speaker 1: it's funny, like, I think Cam Hayward is awesome and
- 27:18Speaker 1: he's a good dude by all accounts, That old situation
- 27:21Speaker 1: is weird. He doesn't seem like the type of guy
- 27:23Speaker 1: to like make something up or get mad for no reason.
- 27:26Speaker 1: But it kind of looks like he did. I don't
- 27:30Speaker 1: know what happened there. It's still weird. I'm not going
- 27:32Speaker 1: to jump on the bandwagon and kind of like make
- 27:34Speaker 1: fun of him, like I know a lot of people
- 27:35Speaker 1: are and dunking on them if that old situation is weird,
- 27:37Speaker 1: Like he's not the type of guy to do that
- 27:39Speaker 1: or get or get that heated in general, let alone
- 27:42Speaker 1: for nothing. So yeah, I still do think it's uh, yeah,
- 27:46Speaker 1: the situation is still weird. As Claude says, the Bills
- 27:48Speaker 1: let Davis Mill stand there all day. Yeah they held
- 27:50Speaker 1: for those who, uh who don't remember. So yeah. So
- 27:52Speaker 1: they twenty four percent pressure rate against the Steelers this week.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Not great, right, they had a sixteen percent pressure rate
- 28:00Speaker 1: team point one pressure rate that I didn't look that up.
- 28:02Speaker 1: That number still burned in my brain. Sixteen point one
- 28:04Speaker 1: percent pressure rate against the Texans the week before, while
- 28:07Speaker 1: also giving up a sixty seven or sixty four percent
- 28:11Speaker 1: rushing success rate in the first half to a team
- 28:13Speaker 1: that had a thirty five percent rushing success rate on
- 28:15Speaker 1: the year. Not great, Pop says, two trees, Yes, thank you,
- 28:21Speaker 1: it's Christmas time, I have moved the baby tree over there.
- 28:24Speaker 1: It's decorated in Christmas Garland. You just can't really see
- 28:27Speaker 1: because the lights are so bright. And then yeah, rocking
- 28:29Speaker 1: the bigger frosted tree, red garland, red ornaments. I got
- 28:33Speaker 1: some different colored ornaments, Ryan, you just can't see. I
- 28:35Speaker 1: also got a nice little red starrup top that you
- 28:37Speaker 1: can't see. I'm gonna have to rectify that. I didn't
- 28:39Speaker 1: realize that wasn't gonna show with the borders, So I'm
- 28:41Speaker 1: probably gonna attach it even though it's right on the
- 28:43Speaker 1: top of the tree. Now, I'm probably gonna attach it
- 28:45Speaker 1: there so that way it can be seen. But yeah,
- 28:49Speaker 1: Josh says, anyone know what in the world happened to
- 28:51Speaker 1: our pass rush? Yeah, a lot of it was dependent
- 28:54Speaker 1: on Ed Oliver Joey Bosa when it was kicking, and
- 28:58Speaker 1: then Bosa got hurt and I'll ever got hurt, and
- 29:01Speaker 1: then Hoyite matters a lot for the scheme and the
- 29:03Speaker 1: design and the nastiness that they brought. So yeah, really,
- 29:06Speaker 1: as terrible as it sounds like, the success of their
- 29:07Speaker 1: pass ruts was really contingent upon three players, and one
- 29:11Speaker 1: of them is out for the year, the other one
- 29:14Speaker 1: is out for likely the regular season, and the other
- 29:16Speaker 1: one has been banged up and things are kind of
- 29:17Speaker 1: falling apart. Good call Doug talking about the double corner
- 29:23Speaker 1: blitz and the Bills defensive play callback saw burst Kansas City.
- 29:25Speaker 1: They brought it versus Pitt along with the two other
- 29:28Speaker 1: ben for corner blitz one of the most second Yeah,
- 29:30Speaker 1: corner blitz on the sack and scoop and score. He
- 29:32Speaker 1: had a corner blitz on a second down run that
- 29:35Speaker 1: he got to stop, and then he had another corner
- 29:37Speaker 1: blitz later in the game that he got to stop
- 29:39Speaker 1: on as well. I disagree with this from Joey. Joey
- 29:42Speaker 1: says aj Panessa has dropped off badly. I disagree his
- 29:45Speaker 1: advanced metrics from a pass russing standpoint are better than
- 29:48Speaker 1: people realize. I also think his tape is better than
- 29:50Speaker 1: people realize, and he is making plays against the run.
- 29:52Speaker 1: He's never going to be a top of the depth
- 29:54Speaker 1: chart guy. Aj Panessa is never going to be Edge
- 29:58Speaker 1: one or edge two, but he can be a really
- 30:00Speaker 1: good rotational three or a four. I know that's not
- 30:03Speaker 1: sexy and that's not fun. I think he's a quality
- 30:05Speaker 1: rotational body. The problem is their top of the depth chart.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Guys aren't through top of the depth chart guys in
- 30:14Speaker 1: certain areas or they're hurt, so he has to take
- 30:16Speaker 1: more on his shoulders or plate and he's just not
- 30:18Speaker 1: that guy. What a Nick nixys Dwayne Carter coming back
- 30:26Speaker 1: to rush off the edge like he did in college. Obviously,
- 30:28Speaker 1: I like that now. Kam Morris as a we led
- 30:31Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence score like he did against Kansas City for
- 30:33Speaker 1: a winning score. I think the world ends there. I
- 30:35Speaker 1: probably don't with football, yeah, oh, Charles says, yeah, we
- 30:37Speaker 1: probably get both. Trevor Lawrence is in the same game.
- 30:39Speaker 1: From playoff standpoint, that's absolutely right. But by going through ah,
- 30:46Speaker 1: thank you, Ka Moury. Sorry, I know I'm making way through.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Cammorry said, he dm me the twenty nine Times video
- 30:52Speaker 1: on discording it. You are the man, Thank you very much.
- 30:54Speaker 1: I will get into that. I kind of want to
- 30:56Speaker 1: get into it now, but I'll get into it after.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Oh man, Kevin's saying I think the account said it
- 31:02Speaker 1: was on. That's great And so for those who don't know,
- 31:05Speaker 1: I don't like to be influenced by anything from the
- 31:07Speaker 1: outside or see anything. So until I've completed all of
- 31:09Speaker 1: the Bills tape, you'll see me posting it on socials,
- 31:13Speaker 1: but I don't look at anything else. I literally open
- 31:15Speaker 1: up Twitter and Blue Sky, I post, and then I
- 31:19Speaker 1: close the app and I put my phone down. I'm
- 31:22Speaker 1: also not a big social media person anyway, Like I
- 31:24Speaker 1: don't scroll Twitter. I'm not really on there like that.
- 31:27Speaker 1: So I post and I run away, but especially when
- 31:30Speaker 1: I haven't finished the tape yet, so I consume nothing.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Eric and I talk about it all the time, like
- 31:35Speaker 1: what Eric thinks of the Bills game and what I
- 31:37Speaker 1: think of the Bills game. Neither one of us know
- 31:40Speaker 1: what the other thinks until we get into the film
- 31:42Speaker 1: room and start talking about stuff, like we build everything
- 31:45Speaker 1: independently of one another, like in a vault, kind of
- 31:48Speaker 1: blocking each other out. And then I take it even
- 31:50Speaker 1: further and I block out everyone and everything. I don't
- 31:52Speaker 1: talk to anybody about it. I don't look at anything.
- 31:54Speaker 1: So I'm interested to kind of go back and see
- 31:56Speaker 1: what happened with this account and the drama that's not funny.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Oh there's a super chat, Carl. Thank you very much
- 32:04Speaker 1: for being here, and thank you for the super chat.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Carlo says, Joe Brady dialed up the perfect game plan
- 32:08Speaker 1: to defeat the Steelers. Oh, if you were preparing for
- 32:11Speaker 1: Joe Burrow in the Bengals, what game plan are you
- 32:13Speaker 1: dialing up? Man? For me? It starts with if t
- 32:17Speaker 1: Higgins is healthy. If he's not, I'm doubling Jamar Chase
- 32:21Speaker 1: every chance I get, whether it's like true bracket man
- 32:24Speaker 1: coverage type stuff, or even bracketing him kind of in zone.
- 32:27Speaker 1: I'm throwing a cloud corner his way. You just you
- 32:31Speaker 1: have to. I don't. I don't, And this isn't a
- 32:33Speaker 1: knock against the Bills. You can't cover Jamar Chase one
- 32:35Speaker 1: on one unless your pats are ten or Derek Stingley.
- 32:37Speaker 1: You're not covering Jamar Chase one on one. It's just
- 32:39Speaker 1: not happening. So I refuse. I start with refusing to
- 32:43Speaker 1: let Jamar Chase beat me, and then you have to
- 32:48Speaker 1: change the pre and post snap picture as much as
- 32:49Speaker 1: you can. Now that's a little tougher if you're allocating
- 32:51Speaker 1: two bodies as resources to Jamar Chase. But you have
- 32:54Speaker 1: to change the pre to post snap picture. Against Joe Burrow,
- 32:57Speaker 1: I know he gets a lot of jokes made about him.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I think Joe Burrow is awesome. I have no problem
- 33:04Speaker 1: with people who say Joe Burrow is like the best
- 33:08Speaker 1: quarterback in the league or second best or third best,
- 33:10Speaker 1: like if people rank Burrow ahead of Alan or Lamar Mahomes.
- 33:14Speaker 1: I recognize it's a bit of a stretch, but I
- 33:15Speaker 1: think Burrow is awesome. He's such a good processor. He's
- 33:18Speaker 1: such a good reader of the game and understanding like
- 33:21Speaker 1: the pre picture, the pre snap picture, but then also
- 33:23Speaker 1: like diagnosing post snap and knowing where to go. It's
- 33:27Speaker 1: hard to like make him hold the ball, it's hard
- 33:29Speaker 1: to make him inaccurate. And he's just a really good quarterback.
- 33:34Speaker 1: And he had got that first game back under his
- 33:36Speaker 1: belt last week. He's had about a week and a
- 33:38Speaker 1: half to prepare for you. Along with Zach Taylor, I
- 33:42Speaker 1: am doing everything I can to change the pre to
- 33:44Speaker 1: post snap picture. I'm getting creative with my coverages as
- 33:47Speaker 1: much as physically possible. I'm not talking just like show
- 33:50Speaker 1: single high spend it, you know, split safety and vice versa.
- 33:53Speaker 1: I'm talking non traditional Tampa stuff. I'm talking some simulated pressures,
- 33:57Speaker 1: some creepers. I'm talking some slop blitz to some corner
- 34:00Speaker 1: blitz is I think you have to like not empty
- 34:03Speaker 1: the clip, but you have to do a lot from
- 34:06Speaker 1: a mental standpoint to get after him and throw him off,
- 34:10Speaker 1: you know, from a comfortability and processing standpoint. Now what's
- 34:14Speaker 1: helpful with that is their offensive line is not very good.
- 34:17Speaker 1: So in an ideal world, you can win with your
- 34:19Speaker 1: front four and play with seven in coverage. I don't
- 34:24Speaker 1: holistically have faith in the bills front four to do that,
- 34:26Speaker 1: So I think you're gonna have to get creative and
- 34:28Speaker 1: how you attack a little bit. We'll see if the
- 34:30Speaker 1: Bills do that, But yeah, you just have to get
- 34:34Speaker 1: Burrow off a spot and you have to change the
- 34:36Speaker 1: picture on and an ideal world, you win with your
- 34:39Speaker 1: front four and you let coverage do the rest, and
- 34:42Speaker 1: you also have to stop the run. But that's every
- 34:44Speaker 1: single week for the Bills. That's not unique to the Bengals.
- 34:46Speaker 1: So it really is limiting Chase and changing the pre
- 34:50Speaker 1: to postnat picture on Burrow. If Higgins is out there,
- 34:53Speaker 1: it's tougher to play that kind of bracket double game
- 34:55Speaker 1: on Chase. Then it becomes more of changing the pre
- 34:58Speaker 1: to post that picture and doing what you can to
- 35:00Speaker 1: scheme and game up front, So you just have to
- 35:02Speaker 1: have a lot of creativity. You need to have more
- 35:04Speaker 1: of a match up specific game plan rather than just
- 35:07Speaker 1: your your lock stock and barrel. Yeah we're gonna play
- 35:10Speaker 1: Cover three. Yeah, we're gonna play some quarter Yeah we're
- 35:12Speaker 1: gonna play Cover six. No, it needs to be a
- 35:15Speaker 1: tailored game plan for the type of quarterback he is
- 35:19Speaker 1: and the type of offense that they have. David says,
- 35:25Speaker 1: and what's your thoughts on Morgan Fox filling the height
- 35:28Speaker 1: role to a lesser degree, no disrespect. I think it's
- 35:31Speaker 1: much of a lesser degree. Of a lesser degree, I
- 35:36Speaker 1: I don't think I mentioned on the show when they
- 35:38Speaker 1: signed him. I went in and I watched some of
- 35:40Speaker 1: his tape with the Land in the preseason. I stopped
- 35:43Speaker 1: after like a handful of plays just because it didn't
- 35:46Speaker 1: do anything for me. I don't think he can fill
- 35:49Speaker 1: the height role. It's hard to fill that role in general.
- 35:51Speaker 1: I don't think he could even to like a lesser degree.
- 35:53Speaker 1: I don't think he can do like the poor man's
- 35:55Speaker 1: Michael Hoyt type of thing. You're looking more at like
- 35:59Speaker 1: Dorian Williams and Javon Solomon trying to do it more
- 36:01Speaker 1: so than Morgan Fox I did. I didn't like his
- 36:04Speaker 1: tape from Atlanta in the preseason this year. That okay, oh,
- 36:20Speaker 1: Bill says Anthony, how would you attack that option that
- 36:22Speaker 1: Brady presents from the same formation monster man Creer? Oh cool? Yeah,
- 36:25Speaker 1: So if I'm like shutting down, you're talking about like
- 36:28Speaker 1: if you have that same presentation where they can run
- 36:30Speaker 1: duo or they can run the mid zone stuff. It
- 36:33Speaker 1: starts with if you can get guys to win individually,
- 36:36Speaker 1: that's the biggest thing. And that happened on some some
- 36:38Speaker 1: plays in the Steelers game. Right, JJ Watt, JJ Watt
- 36:41Speaker 1: TJ Watt was able to jump inside a tight end.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Cam Hayward was able to kind of long arm David
- 36:46Speaker 1: Edwards and get penetration. Dugger would make a play. It
- 36:49Speaker 1: starts with if you can get a guy to win individually. Cool.
- 36:52Speaker 1: If you can steal some gaps, you know, meaning you're
- 36:54Speaker 1: a gap short. You have seven defenders for seven bodies,
- 36:57Speaker 1: but that means there's eight gaps. If you can get
- 36:59Speaker 1: somebody to win, squeeze a gap, steal a gap, penetrate,
- 37:03Speaker 1: blow it up. You start there. Second you gap out
- 37:06Speaker 1: a little bit, that would have been my choice. The
- 37:09Speaker 1: biggest you know, kind of confusion for me with the
- 37:12Speaker 1: Steelers game plan is throughout the game it was a
- 37:16Speaker 1: hat on a hat for the Bills. So even when
- 37:18Speaker 1: the Bills were lining up in these formations but running
- 37:20Speaker 1: the ball in general, if they had a seven man surface,
- 37:23Speaker 1: the Steelers had seven in the box again and again,
- 37:26Speaker 1: so you got a hat on a hat, seven defenders
- 37:28Speaker 1: for seven blockers. But as we sat on the show
- 37:30Speaker 1: all the time, howeverybody blockers there are, there's one more
- 37:33Speaker 1: gap than that. So if there's seven blockers, there's eight gaps.
- 37:36Speaker 1: So if you only have seven defenders, you're a gap short.
- 37:39Speaker 1: The Steelers continue to just go half for a hat
- 37:43Speaker 1: and match bodies. If the Bills had seven, they gave seven.
- 37:45Speaker 1: If the Bills had eight, they gave eight. And it
- 37:48Speaker 1: was just hat on a hat and people moving. And
- 37:51Speaker 1: then they were coupling that with also not having guys win.
- 37:55Speaker 1: They would change some things at times in their front,
- 37:57Speaker 1: but a lot of it was just static kind of
- 37:59Speaker 1: going forward and match in numbers, and that was not
- 38:01Speaker 1: working for them. So if I really wanted to attack
- 38:05Speaker 1: that option from Brady, it's a little bit risk reward,
- 38:08Speaker 1: but I if I you know again to stop it.
- 38:11Speaker 1: If you get some individual wins, cool or if you
- 38:13Speaker 1: gap out and win with numbers, cool. But to answer
- 38:16Speaker 1: your question, like straight up of like attacking it, do
- 38:19Speaker 1: some gap exchanges, you do some scrape exchanges. You can
- 38:22Speaker 1: do some run blitzes right, slant your end, slant your tackle,
- 38:25Speaker 1: bring a corner blitz, kind of like what the Bills
- 38:26Speaker 1: did with Benford. Or he can give us run some
- 38:28Speaker 1: basic gap exchanges right like the defensive tackles lined up
- 38:31Speaker 1: in the b he slants or stunts into that a
- 38:33Speaker 1: gap in your middle linebacker scrapes over the top, and
- 38:36Speaker 1: he's now in the b anything you can do to
- 38:38Speaker 1: disrupt the coordination, because you know, the Bills are either
- 38:43Speaker 1: running duo or the Bills are running that mid zone play.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Both of those are contingent upon coordination and movement. Duo
- 38:50Speaker 1: is on double teams, everybody working together from that perspective
- 38:53Speaker 1: and getting north and south and kind of going at
- 38:55Speaker 1: you and creating vertical displacement. Mid zone is and even
- 38:59Speaker 1: an inside own pieces more. Let's all step to the
- 39:02Speaker 1: left or all step to the right, wash everyone down,
- 39:04Speaker 1: move in coordination and kind of go from there. Either way.
- 39:09Speaker 1: If you get a guy who backdoors something or who
- 39:12Speaker 1: messes up, like, hey, we think the three tech is
- 39:14Speaker 1: going to be here, all of a sudden, he shot
- 39:16Speaker 1: a gap backwards and they're running to straight you know
- 39:18Speaker 1: that type of thing. Anything where you can disrupt the
- 39:21Speaker 1: timing and the coordination goes a long way. So if
- 39:25Speaker 1: that is the attack mindset, That's what I'm doing, if
- 39:28Speaker 1: I'm attacking it. But in an ideal world, you can
- 39:30Speaker 1: either just win with numbers or you have guys who
- 39:33Speaker 1: can you know, kind of just went up front, which
- 39:35Speaker 1: they had more than they got credit for, but a
- 39:37Speaker 1: lot of it was just static, not really attacking, just
- 39:39Speaker 1: kind of letting the Bills get hat on a hat
- 39:41Speaker 1: hoping somebody would win, and they didn't, and then when
- 39:44Speaker 1: they did win, at times James Cook was like, no,
- 39:46Speaker 1: I'm just gonna do something different here and play above
- 39:49Speaker 1: that the Steelers defense is right cool, I'm gonna make
- 39:51Speaker 1: them wrong that type of stuff. Question here saying you're
- 39:58Speaker 1: a Bills fan, right, I am a Bills fan. I'm
- 39:59Speaker 1: more of a football fan than a Bills fan, but yes,
- 40:01Speaker 1: absolutely love the Bills. If so, what do you think
- 40:03Speaker 1: of sending five sometimes at Burrow with that offensive line. Yeah, absolutely,
- 40:06Speaker 1: I mentioned it a bit earlier. I am I'm blitzing.
- 40:09Speaker 1: I'm sending sims, I'm sending in creepers, I am attacking.
- 40:13Speaker 1: I'm going I'm doing anything I can to attack that
- 40:16Speaker 1: offensive line while not completely sacrificing bodies and coverage. If
- 40:20Speaker 1: there's Chase An Higgins, if Higgins is out, I feel
- 40:23Speaker 1: a little bit better. But you can't completely sacrifice numbers
- 40:27Speaker 1: in coverage with how this team, this Bills team is built.
- 40:29Speaker 1: But yes, you got to send some five sen six,
- 40:32Speaker 1: send a non traditional rusher from time to time. You
- 40:34Speaker 1: can still rush for, but have it be a sim
- 40:36Speaker 1: or a creeper. All of these pieces. Uh what else?
- 40:40Speaker 1: What else? I'm gonna let you ask a couple of questions.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Kaplitz is, Yes, I am bringing those any not every
- 40:47Speaker 1: time they're into the boundary, but yeah, if there's four,
- 40:49Speaker 1: if their formation is into the boundary, I'm bringing it. Oh.
- 40:53Speaker 1: What do I think of Taron Johnson. He's having a
- 40:54Speaker 1: down year and I'm very disappointed. He's having a down
- 40:58Speaker 1: year in coverage and is a run too. It's disappointing.
- 41:05Speaker 1: There was a lot of Okay, I think we got
- 41:07Speaker 1: a lot of things. Ah. I like that Bob Bob
- 41:13Speaker 1: saying fellow pies on here from the island, not the boot,
- 41:15Speaker 1: same here. So Sillian's all day, alright, cool. I'm gonna
- 41:21Speaker 1: still get into comments as we go forward and go through.
- 41:24Speaker 1: I really should, with how we're already forty minutes and
- 41:26Speaker 1: I really should just I feel like once we get
- 41:28Speaker 1: like really flowing in these episodes, I'm really just like,
- 41:29Speaker 1: I feel like I should just scrap scrap my notes
- 41:32Speaker 1: and we just go forward. I am going to continue
- 41:35Speaker 1: to bring up questions and comments and thoughts and everything
- 41:37Speaker 1: from the chat. I wanted to start out with Shaq
- 41:43Speaker 1: Thompson and talking about Chef Thompson. I know it's on
- 41:45Speaker 1: the forefront of forefront of a lot of folks minds.
- 41:48Speaker 1: I thought of doing a Shack Thompson film breakdown in
- 41:51Speaker 1: this episode. I just didn't have the time to put
- 41:54Speaker 1: everything together. Plus with how YouTube is with the video
- 41:57Speaker 1: laws and everything and fighting that it's so frustrating annoying.
- 42:01Speaker 1: But I want to talk about Shack Thompson and I
- 42:05Speaker 1: wanted to talk about him in juxtaposition with Terrel Bernard
- 42:08Speaker 1: and then also kind of putting both of those guys
- 42:10Speaker 1: into perspective with the run defense, So Shack Thompson, I
- 42:13Speaker 1: don't think it's at this point. It's very well known.
- 42:16Speaker 1: The team is the defense is better with him out
- 42:18Speaker 1: there on the field, right from a run defense standpoint especially,
- 42:20Speaker 1: but I think from a standpoint in general, the Bill's
- 42:24Speaker 1: defense is better with Shack Thompson out there. And I
- 42:28Speaker 1: do want to say all of this the caveat of
- 42:30Speaker 1: this conversation of him versus Terrel Bernard, right, Terrel Bernard
- 42:34Speaker 1: this whole year has been playing injured. I'm not giving
- 42:37Speaker 1: him a complete pass, and I'm not just making that
- 42:39Speaker 1: excuse just to kind of save his behind or anything
- 42:41Speaker 1: like that. But he's playing on one leg. He's playing
- 42:44Speaker 1: I don't know if the ankle, the knee, whatever it is,
- 42:46Speaker 1: he's playing on one leg. You can see it in
- 42:49Speaker 1: his movement. He he just doesn't have it in close quarters,
- 42:52Speaker 1: in space, change a direction, start stop, kind of burst
- 42:57Speaker 1: eight un habit, and he's been playing through that, and
- 43:01Speaker 1: he's suffering for it, and the defense is suffering for it.
- 43:03Speaker 1: What's tough with Bernard is, especially with the type of
- 43:06Speaker 1: injury that he has, the type of player he already
- 43:09Speaker 1: is even when he's one hundred percent healthy. Trel Bernard
- 43:12Speaker 1: has very short arms, and as we all know, he's
- 43:14Speaker 1: a smaller linebacker. He's not very big. He's not very
- 43:17Speaker 1: you know, kind of menacing with his size, frame length,
- 43:21Speaker 1: any of that stuff, right, So he is not built
- 43:24Speaker 1: to take on blocks. He's not built to stack and shed.
- 43:27Speaker 1: If you are a climbing, interior offensive lineman, he's trying
- 43:31Speaker 1: to beat you to the spot with quickness and processing
- 43:35Speaker 1: and angles. He's trying to prevent you from getting hands
- 43:39Speaker 1: on him. At most, he's trying to play through his shoulder.
- 43:41Speaker 1: He's trying to dip and move. If you think about
- 43:44Speaker 1: all the good plays to Rol Bernard has made against
- 43:45Speaker 1: the run in his career, they come from a quick trigger,
- 43:49Speaker 1: you know, shooting, reading, diagnosing, processing quickly, and then beating
- 43:54Speaker 1: blocks to the spot. He is not a guy who
- 43:56Speaker 1: is built to take on blockers, stack, shed, play through
- 43:59Speaker 1: con He's not built for that. That's not a skill set,
- 44:02Speaker 1: that's not his body type. So if your game is
- 44:05Speaker 1: predicated on beating guys to the spot, your lower body
- 44:09Speaker 1: is very important. He's playing with a knock to his
- 44:12Speaker 1: lower body, so he's slower to those spots, and on
- 44:16Speaker 1: top of that, when guys get their hands on him,
- 44:19Speaker 1: something he already struggles with even when healthy, but guys
- 44:22Speaker 1: get their hands on him, he doesn't have that base
- 44:25Speaker 1: to be like, Okay, let me kind of ground myself,
- 44:28Speaker 1: let me anchor a little bit. Someone's pushing me to
- 44:30Speaker 1: the right, let me kind of sink my hips in
- 44:32Speaker 1: my feet and drop and push back. He can't do
- 44:34Speaker 1: that because he's playing on one leg essentially, So this year,
- 44:40Speaker 1: his skill, his vulnerabilities as a player are magnified time
- 44:44Speaker 1: as a thousand because he doesn't have any ability to
- 44:48Speaker 1: kind of mitigate those vulnerabilities once guys get hands on him.
- 44:52Speaker 1: That's why you've seen this year more than others, offensive
- 44:54Speaker 1: linemen getting to him at the second level, pushing him
- 44:57Speaker 1: on a frame, burying him into the ground, chucking him.
- 45:00Speaker 1: He'd done to have a base, and he's not healthy.
- 45:02Speaker 1: I've been saying for weeks. Shaq Thompson has been and
- 45:05Speaker 1: is the Bill's best linebacker this year, and a good
- 45:08Speaker 1: chunk of that is because Torell Bernard is hurt. Matt
- 45:10Speaker 1: Malonald has been hurt as well, but Bernard is more significant.
- 45:12Speaker 1: Bernard is hurt I don't think this is a death
- 45:16Speaker 1: sentence for Bernard. I don't think this means, oh, Bernard
- 45:19Speaker 1: is done in this contract is garbage. Let's see what
- 45:21Speaker 1: he looks like when he's healthy and go from there.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Now that being said, unless Torell Bernard is one hundred percent,
- 45:32Speaker 1: Shaq Thompson needs to be the starting middle linebacker on
- 45:35Speaker 1: this team. There is no questions about it at this point.
- 45:38Speaker 1: And then even when Bernard is healthy, I still think
- 45:41Speaker 1: you can make the case that Shaq could be the starter.
- 45:44Speaker 1: But I would understand if Bernard is one hundred percent healthy,
- 45:48Speaker 1: he was the incumbent starter. He's a captain, one of
- 45:51Speaker 1: the few they have here. Cool I can understand them
- 45:54Speaker 1: wanting to put him back in, but Shaq needs to
- 45:56Speaker 1: be the starting linebacker on this team, especially while Bernard
- 45:59Speaker 1: is banged up, and honestly even potentially when he comes
- 46:02Speaker 1: back as well. And that's not great for Bernard, and
- 46:05Speaker 1: I understand the position that that puts Bill's management and
- 46:08Speaker 1: the coaching staff in, and maybe even this team in.
- 46:11Speaker 1: It's not ideal. I also don't think from a position standpoint. Again,
- 46:15Speaker 1: it's not ideal no matter how you spin it. I
- 46:18Speaker 1: think people forgot how good Schef Thompson is. Like, he's
- 46:22Speaker 1: a really good linebacker and has been for a while.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Lower body injuries have kind of derailed him a bit,
- 46:27Speaker 1: like knee injuries, achilles injuries. He's missed a bunch of time.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Even with the miles on the tires and the injuries,
- 46:34Speaker 1: you can still see that dude can play like. He's
- 46:36Speaker 1: got a bunch of experience. He's got some size around
- 46:40Speaker 1: two hundred and thirty pounds, so he's not a monster,
- 46:42Speaker 1: but he pairs that with athleticism and movement and experience
- 46:45Speaker 1: and processing and a trigger and long arms, and he
- 46:49Speaker 1: works so good in this defense and especially from a
- 46:52Speaker 1: run defense standpoint, because he can play through blocks. If
- 46:56Speaker 1: in tier offensive lineman get to him at the second level,
- 46:59Speaker 1: he has no problem, you know, kind of stonewalling somebody
- 47:04Speaker 1: in the hole or in the gap, or playing into
- 47:07Speaker 1: somebody stacking and shedding, moving and make a play playing
- 47:10Speaker 1: through his shoulder because he's bigger, somebody leans on him.
- 47:13Speaker 1: He can sink his hips and lean back and kind
- 47:15Speaker 1: of stay in the gap and not get washed and
- 47:17Speaker 1: not get displaced. And the way he lets things flow,
- 47:21Speaker 1: how he processes, how he diagnoses There are several plays
- 47:23Speaker 1: in the game against the Steelers where the snap happens
- 47:26Speaker 1: and you can see he's reading his keys and the
- 47:29Speaker 1: snap happens and his eyes are here or his eyes
- 47:32Speaker 1: are here, and a happens, and bang, he's gone, and
- 47:36Speaker 1: he's beating the ball to the spot, and he's beaten
- 47:38Speaker 1: blockers of the spot. He's playing over the top, he's
- 47:40Speaker 1: going a little sideline to sideline. He's meeting guys in
- 47:43Speaker 1: the hole. There's one in front of him where uh
- 47:47Speaker 1: Daikwon Jones kind of the double team stays on Daiquon
- 47:50Speaker 1: and he battles with it and eats the double. But
- 47:52Speaker 1: him and Daikon are both going to the left. But
- 47:54Speaker 1: he sees Daikwon going there, and he sees the cutback
- 47:57Speaker 1: from Warren. But more importantly, he feels and sees what's
- 48:00Speaker 1: going on with Daiquon, so he just lets Daiquon go
- 48:03Speaker 1: this way. He falls off and he just meets Jalen
- 48:05Speaker 1: Warren in the hole. You get those kind of plays
- 48:08Speaker 1: from Shaq Thompson with regularity. You're not getting those from
- 48:11Speaker 1: Bernard Shack. Thompson needs to be the starting mic linebacker
- 48:15Speaker 1: for this Buffalo Bill's team. He's got the experience, he's
- 48:18Speaker 1: got the knowledge, he's been to a Super Bowl, he's
- 48:20Speaker 1: played with all pros. Like he's he he's just a
- 48:23Speaker 1: good player. Again, I know it sucks for Bernard and
- 48:26Speaker 1: it sucks to have that conversation. And it's not even
- 48:28Speaker 1: just like, oh, it's a nice feather in the cap
- 48:29Speaker 1: for Shack Thompson. Shack Thomps has been a really good
- 48:31Speaker 1: football player in the NFL for like a while. Injuries
- 48:34Speaker 1: have just derailed him the past several years. But you
- 48:38Speaker 1: can see even like he's thirty two years old, he's
- 48:40Speaker 1: had significant, multiple significant lower body injuries, and he's still
- 48:44Speaker 1: out there like making crazy plays. Doe was a former
- 48:47Speaker 1: safety that turned into like a big nickel linebacker for
- 48:51Speaker 1: the Panthers when like Keith Lee and Davis were there.
- 48:54Speaker 1: He learned under those guys and then became more of
- 48:56Speaker 1: a true linebacker and a mic like dude is just
- 48:59Speaker 1: gifted and a monster and really smart and he understands
- 49:02Speaker 1: what it takes to win in this league. He needs
- 49:04Speaker 1: to be the guy. Sean McDermott also mentioned, I want
- 49:08Speaker 1: to bring up this quote that I told myself to
- 49:11Speaker 1: put in my notes, and I didn't because I said,
- 49:14Speaker 1: you know what I can do, I can just look
- 49:17Speaker 1: it up on my Twitter, and I hope it comes
- 49:19Speaker 1: up right now, because sometimes Twitter is not there. We
- 49:22Speaker 1: go Sean McDermott talking about Shaq Thompson. He said, quote,
- 49:27Speaker 1: he knows the defense coming from Carolina. He's a dog,
- 49:30Speaker 1: he plays with an edge, he leads, he leads with
- 49:33Speaker 1: his voice. He did a great job leading the team
- 49:35Speaker 1: this week. He spoke to the team. I think it
- 49:38Speaker 1: was Friday, I believe it was, and he stood right
- 49:40Speaker 1: up there and he challenged them. That's what leadership is
- 49:43Speaker 1: right there. There's a couple of different ways to lead,
- 49:45Speaker 1: and that's one of them. So you get the on
- 49:47Speaker 1: field play, which is awesome, but you also get the leadership.
- 49:50Speaker 1: And I do think that challenging of them from a
- 49:52Speaker 1: run defense standpoint showed up. They played with a different
- 49:56Speaker 1: edge and violence and physicality in this game against Pittsburgh
- 49:59Speaker 1: then they previously against the run shack. Thompson needs to
- 50:02Speaker 1: be the starting linebacker middle linebacker for this team, especially
- 50:06Speaker 1: while Bernard is banged up, because when Bernard's out there,
- 50:08Speaker 1: he's not helping himself, he's not helping the defense. You're
- 50:10Speaker 1: not helping him, sit him, let him get to health,
- 50:14Speaker 1: let him get to one hundred percent. Shack Thompson needs
- 50:16Speaker 1: to be the starting middle linebacker for this team. The
- 50:18Speaker 1: writing has been on the wall for several weeks. It
- 50:21Speaker 1: just has to continue. Shack's got to be that guy.
- 50:23Speaker 1: There are some deficiencies right He isn't the most fleet
- 50:26Speaker 1: a foot because of the injuries and the miles on
- 50:28Speaker 1: the tires, so speed will get to him every once
- 50:30Speaker 1: in a while. But he's the better option for them
- 50:33Speaker 1: at middle linebacker right now. He also had a couple
- 50:35Speaker 1: of good coverage reps in this game, some match coverage stuff.
- 50:38Speaker 1: He was the one who got underneath that throw on
- 50:40Speaker 1: the sail route that Rudolph you know, kind of roofed
- 50:43Speaker 1: and Christian Benford got the interception. That's because Shack matched
- 50:47Speaker 1: I think it was Darnell Washington. He matched the route
- 50:50Speaker 1: from Washington on the sail or the out and got
- 50:53Speaker 1: underneath him, tried to undercut it. Rudolph sailed that ball
- 50:56Speaker 1: and Benford picked it. He also had a nice pass
- 50:58Speaker 1: off with Tarren Johnson later with some match stuff. Shack
- 51:01Speaker 1: needs to be the starting middle linebacker. In that theme,
- 51:06Speaker 1: I'm going to bring up some data now from where
- 51:12Speaker 1: are you? Where are you there? You are? Nope, yes,
- 51:16Speaker 1: there it is Screenshair's going crazy for me right now.
- 51:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna bring up some data per Sports Info solutions.
- 51:23Speaker 1: These are on and off splits for Terrel Bernard and
- 51:28Speaker 1: Shaq Thompson. They are whatever. I haven't pulled it up yet.
- 51:30Speaker 1: I'm just kind of giving you guys the intro too,
- 51:32Speaker 1: because once I bring it up, I want to talk
- 51:33Speaker 1: about it. These are essentially kind of advanced metrics for
- 51:38Speaker 1: the team when Bernard is on the field and off
- 51:41Speaker 1: the field, and when Shaq Thompson is on the field,
- 51:44Speaker 1: and when Shack Thompson is off the field. Now what
- 51:45Speaker 1: I want to say, there is some noise because Shaq
- 51:49Speaker 1: Thompson and Terrel Bernard have been on the field with
- 51:52Speaker 1: each other at the same time this year. Also Shack
- 51:55Speaker 1: Thompson getting more reps as the season has gone along
- 51:59Speaker 1: and more under the Sean McDermott version of this defense
- 52:02Speaker 1: where McDermott took over at halftime of that Atlanta game
- 52:06Speaker 1: and has been running the defense going forward. Shack getting
- 52:09Speaker 1: more time under that version of the defense is also
- 52:13Speaker 1: a little bit different, right, So it's not complete. The
- 52:14Speaker 1: apples to apples, there is some noise, not even talking
- 52:17Speaker 1: about opponent quality and game script and all that kind
- 52:20Speaker 1: of stuff. There is some noise with these data points. However,
- 52:24Speaker 1: I will say the differences are stark. So I'm gonna
- 52:27Speaker 1: pull this up right now. First, we have here, as
- 52:29Speaker 1: you can Seerel Bernard is pulled up again. This is
- 52:32Speaker 1: all courtesy of Sports Info Solutions, really good advanced metric site.
- 52:36Speaker 1: This is there on and off report. We're gonna talk
- 52:39Speaker 1: about some of this. So let's start from a basic standpoint.
- 52:42Speaker 1: And for those who don't know, when you're on defense
- 52:44Speaker 1: individually or as a team, you want to be negative.
- 52:49Speaker 1: You know, plus stuff is usually good for the offense.
- 52:51Speaker 1: You want negative for a defense. So, for an instance,
- 52:55Speaker 1: EPA per play up here right with Terrel Bernard on
- 52:58Speaker 1: the field, their EPA per play is zero point zero seven. Okay,
- 53:03Speaker 1: not you know, a crazy number, but if you look
- 53:07Speaker 1: at the EPA per play when he's off the field,
- 53:09Speaker 1: it's negative zero point two to one. When you see
- 53:12Speaker 1: that and you say, oh, it's negative. Negative is better
- 53:15Speaker 1: for the defense in this regard, when you're looking at
- 53:17Speaker 1: EPA per play metrics, you want negative for instance, uh,
- 53:21Speaker 1: you know, kind of as we talk about defenses here
- 53:25Speaker 1: in general, the Houston Texans for example, or even we'll
- 53:30Speaker 1: just look at team defense in general. Per I know
- 53:32Speaker 1: you can't see it because we're still looking at this,
- 53:33Speaker 1: but per next gen stats, if you want to look at,
- 53:37Speaker 1: you know, the best defense in terms of EPA per play,
- 53:40Speaker 1: the Texans are number one in the league at negative
- 53:43Speaker 1: zero point one eight. Then it's the Browns, the Seahawks,
- 53:45Speaker 1: the Rams all at negative zero point one six, negative
- 53:48Speaker 1: zero point one six, negative zero point one five, so
- 53:50Speaker 1: on and so forth. You want to be negative if
- 53:52Speaker 1: you are a defense. So if you're looking at this,
- 53:58Speaker 1: this is stark this type of difference Terrel Bernard on
- 54:02Speaker 1: the field total EPA per play zero point zero seven,
- 54:07Speaker 1: off the field negative zero point two one, for a
- 54:10Speaker 1: difference of zero point two eight. That is a healthy
- 54:14Speaker 1: difference from an EPA per play standpoint. That means from
- 54:16Speaker 1: an EPA advanced metrics standpoint, the Bills defense is significantly
- 54:21Speaker 1: better with Terrel Bernard off the field. Again, their EPA
- 54:25Speaker 1: per play is negative zero point two one, and different
- 54:28Speaker 1: sites kind of measure EPA per play differently, right, But
- 54:32Speaker 1: if you take the EPA per play here at negative
- 54:34Speaker 1: zero point two to one. What did I just say
- 54:37Speaker 1: about the Texans, right, The Texans have the best defense
- 54:41Speaker 1: in the NFL, and their EPA per play is negative
- 54:44Speaker 1: zero point one eight. Their EPA per play is negative
- 54:47Speaker 1: zero point one eight. For the Bills with Bernard off
- 54:49Speaker 1: the field, it's negative zero point two to one. By
- 54:52Speaker 1: that comparison, the Bills would have the best defense in
- 54:54Speaker 1: the NFL with Terrel Bernard off the field. I'm not
- 54:56Speaker 1: saying that's the case, but from a number perspective, kind
- 54:59Speaker 1: of put that in to your brains or put that
- 55:01Speaker 1: in perspective if you're looking at it just from a
- 55:03Speaker 1: pass standpoint. On the field, EPA per play zero point
- 55:07Speaker 1: zero one off the field negative zero point twenty five. Again,
- 55:10Speaker 1: another Stark difference of zero point twenty six for reference.
- 55:14Speaker 1: If you want to say, well, hey, what's the best
- 55:17Speaker 1: defense in terms of EPA per pass, it is the
- 55:20Speaker 1: Houston Texans at negative zero point twenty five. So the
- 55:23Speaker 1: Bills defense with Terrell Bernard off the field is in
- 55:27Speaker 1: the conversation with the Houston Texans from an advanced metrics
- 55:30Speaker 1: standpoint of EPA per pass. Now, let's look at rushing
- 55:34Speaker 1: also Stark on the field zero point zero one five,
- 55:38Speaker 1: off the field negative zero point one five for a
- 55:42Speaker 1: difference of zero point three, so more than a quarter
- 55:45Speaker 1: of a point difference per play. That is again Stark,
- 55:50Speaker 1: that is significant. And if you say there, hey, who's
- 55:53Speaker 1: the leader in EPA per rush right now in the NFL,
- 55:55Speaker 1: I'm glad you asked. It's the Seattle Seahawks at negative
- 55:58Speaker 1: zero point one point eight. So this off the field
- 56:00Speaker 1: run defense for the Bills had negative zero point one
- 56:04Speaker 1: five would give them the third best run defense in
- 56:07Speaker 1: the NFL. And again, I think that speaks to the
- 56:11Speaker 1: struggles in the spine for Bernard individually. But you pair
- 56:14Speaker 1: that with you know, three techs on the interior and
- 56:17Speaker 1: guys that are penetrators and guys that struggle vers doubles
- 56:20Speaker 1: and guys that want to shoot gaps and not eat
- 56:22Speaker 1: up blockers and anchor right, that also doesn't help your
- 56:26Speaker 1: second level. That meant, because of the way the Bills
- 56:28Speaker 1: have built their interior defensive line, it's easier for offensive
- 56:32Speaker 1: linemen to climb to the second level to get their
- 56:34Speaker 1: hands on Terrell Bernard, which is why we talked about
- 56:37Speaker 1: it last week. It's confusing, not confusing. But if you
- 56:40Speaker 1: build your entire spine out of like smaller shooters, that's
- 56:44Speaker 1: tough if guys get their hands on them. And it's
- 56:46Speaker 1: that way through the entire spine, right Like you can
- 56:48Speaker 1: get hands on an interior defensive lineman and chuck them,
- 56:50Speaker 1: you can get hands on Bernard and chuck them. But
- 56:52Speaker 1: especially for Bernard this year, where he's got a bum
- 56:54Speaker 1: wheel and he needs protection and he needs help, he's
- 56:57Speaker 1: not getting it. So this year, even more so so,
- 57:00Speaker 1: Shack is a better fit because he can take on
- 57:03Speaker 1: those blockers. He can shit, he can stack and shed
- 57:06Speaker 1: and move and play through shoulders and play through chests
- 57:09Speaker 1: and not get thrown off the club. Now let us
- 57:14Speaker 1: take a peek at Shack Thomps's numbers. Then again, there's
- 57:17Speaker 1: more if we really want to go into it, like
- 57:19Speaker 1: further you can go you know yards after contact per
- 57:22Speaker 1: attempt with Bernard off the you know further from a
- 57:24Speaker 1: run standpoint, With Bernard off the field, it improves by
- 57:27Speaker 1: one point six yards per attempt for running the ball
- 57:30Speaker 1: here with him on the field, at six point three
- 57:33Speaker 1: off the field, it's three point eight. The difference is
- 57:35Speaker 1: stark in a lot of a lot of these areas.
- 57:38Speaker 1: Now let's go to Shaq Thompson. Scroll scroll scroll, scroll,
- 57:43Speaker 1: scroll scroll scroll. I feel like I'm saying scroll like
- 57:48Speaker 1: and Captain Marvel, where am I? Hh? There we go,
- 57:52Speaker 1: Shack Thompson. Now with Shaq Thompson, you will see a
- 57:59Speaker 1: bit of a difference in terms of the on the
- 58:02Speaker 1: field and the off the field. So, on the field,
- 58:05Speaker 1: the Bills defense EPA per play is negative zero point
- 58:08Speaker 1: zero nine. When he's off the field, it's positive zero
- 58:10Speaker 1: point zero seven. So again, like we talked about, positive
- 58:13Speaker 1: for a defense is worse. So when he's on the field,
- 58:15Speaker 1: they are much better than when he's off the field
- 58:18Speaker 1: overall from a past standpoint. Again, good chunk of difference here.
- 58:22Speaker 1: When he's on the field EPA per play negative zero
- 58:24Speaker 1: point one to five. For the pass off the field,
- 58:27Speaker 1: it's an even zero difference of point fifteen. Run defense
- 58:31Speaker 1: the biggest one of all, but still close to overall
- 58:33Speaker 1: and even close to the pass as well. When he's
- 58:35Speaker 1: on the field, their defensive EPA per play against the
- 58:38Speaker 1: run negative zero point zero two. When he's off the
- 58:41Speaker 1: field zero point one five. Again, they have played next
- 58:46Speaker 1: to each other. They have been on the field at
- 58:48Speaker 1: the same time the defense has changed this year, and
- 58:51Speaker 1: as the defense has changed, right even going into that
- 58:53Speaker 1: Atlanta game, McDermott takes over at halftime of that Atlanta game.
- 58:58Speaker 1: Bernard is hurt in that game, and he's been more
- 59:00Speaker 1: significantly hurt as the year has gone on after that game.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Has kind of played worse in ten with that, although
- 59:05Speaker 1: we had some good flashes against the Bucks, but he's
- 59:08Speaker 1: missed time, he's been injured. Mcdermot's taken over, Shack has
- 59:12Speaker 1: come in, So Shaq is playing in a better version
- 59:14Speaker 1: of the Bills defense. But Shaq is playing better than
- 59:18Speaker 1: Terrel Bernard and he's a better fit right now. So
- 59:20Speaker 1: we talked about the scheme and the structure advantages, the
- 59:22Speaker 1: body type advantages, the skill set advantages, all that kind
- 59:25Speaker 1: of stuff. I also wanted to bring this up. I'm
- 59:28Speaker 1: gonna put this out tomorrow on socials. These differences are stark.
- 59:32Speaker 1: They weren't as bad yesterday before Sports Info solutions added
- 59:36Speaker 1: in the Steelers game, and once they did. Yeah, it's again,
- 59:40Speaker 1: it's not even just looking at the metrics when Shack
- 59:45Speaker 1: is on the field and off the field, but looking
- 59:46Speaker 1: at it when Bernard is off the field versus when
- 59:49Speaker 1: he's on the field, and then comparing those two, Shaq
- 59:52Speaker 1: makes this defense better right now, and he's the better
- 59:56Speaker 1: guy at the middle linebacker spot. Again, a lot of
- 59:58Speaker 1: this is tied to Bernard be hurt. Like I mentioned earlier,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Bernard being out there and being as banged up as
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: he is, he's not helping himself. He's not helping the
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: team that so somebody's got to get in his ear
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: and be like, hey man, you gotta sit down. You
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: got to rest and heal up. But that's something that
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: they've been hesitant to do for any of their guys.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: We talked about it last week against Houston. Spencer Brown
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: is out there with one arm and they're just leaving
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: him out there to fend off you know, Will Anderson
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: and Denil Hunter, and that didn't make sense, but they
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: kept rolling with it. Ah Jack Thompson is the better
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: fit for this team right now at that middle linebacker
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: spot again, schematically with what they are on the interior,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: with his body type, his length, his size, his skill set,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: his mentals, the processing ability, the ability to he can
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: still beat blockers to spots, he can diagnose a run
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: scheme and a concept and headed off at the pass
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: or stay over the top and stay clean and if
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: it gets muddy, he can fall off and fit and
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: you know recognize, okay, like someone got pushed into the B.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Let me take over to the A. Let me take
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: over the A or vice versa, and he can get
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: off blocks, which is a huge thing for this interior
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: right now. And again, I don't think Bernard's struggles are
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: because he fell off a cliff or because he's terrible.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: He is hurt, he's banged up. It's limiting him as
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: a player, and he's the type of player that can't
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: afford those type of limitations because he already has limitations
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: in size and frame and then the defense and how
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: it's built and constructed. He doesn't get protected. There is
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: no Hellodi Nada in front of him. There is no
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Vita Vea, there is no monster space eater that keeps
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: the second level clean. So dudes on the interior are
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: gonna get to the second level, They're gonna get hands
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: on him, and dude already kind of struggles to fend
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: them off. That's why he's got to beat him with
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: speeds and speed and trigger and process and angles and
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. And if he can't move
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: the way he needs to to beat him, dudes are
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: gonna get hands on him and he can't go anywhere.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: So yeah, so I hope that conversation kind of put
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: that in perspective. I think that I wasn't expecting the
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: numbers to be that stark. I want I need to
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: take a peek at it now that we had good
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: sample size. Again. I know there's still some noise in
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: the data. I talked about it and I prefaced that,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: but the number, the metrics are crazy on all just individually,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: on off for Shack, on off for Bernard. But then
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: if you compare the two crazy times, crazy crazy crazy times.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: I want to use that to segue into the run
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: defense better against the Pittsburgh Steelers in this game. Big
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: callout better tackling yards after contact per rush in this
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: game for the Bills, Well, if the Bill's defense can
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: Steelers offense two point two to two yards after contact
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: per rush. That was the sixth lowest in Week thirteen.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Going into this game, the average yard the yards after
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: contact per rush for the Bills on the season was
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: four point three, historically bad by far. The worst in
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: the last eight seasons of football or seven going from
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: twenty eighteen through twenty twenty four, by far the worst.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: No one's been over three point eight since twenty in
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: the last seven or eight seasons, whatever that is, going
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: back to twenty eighteen. So the Bills at four point
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: three historically bad, two point two two much closer to
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: kind of the mean, and again sixth lowest on the
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: week against the Steelers. The Steelers were twenty ninth and
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: success rate at twenty seven point eight percent. The Bills
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: also had the fifth highest stuff rate on the week
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: at twenty two point two percent, that's runs they go
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: for zero or the less, and the Steelers were thirtieth
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: in EPA per rush. Again, Shack Thompson makes a difference,
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: and it helps that the Steelers offense isn't very threatening
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: through the air from a weapons standpoint, from an air
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: yard standpoint, from Aaron Rodgers standpoint. Also, the weather helped.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: Just like it hit, the weather hindered the Bills pass game,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: it hindered the Steelers pass game, and the Steelers pass
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: game was already hindered. So you know, the cards were
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: kind of into Bills favor a little bit. But similar
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: to the Bills offense, if you were the Steelers, you
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: knew like, Okay, we got to come in, we got
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: to run the ball. We know the defense knows that
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: can we do it or can we not? And the
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Steelers could not. They busted off a couple of chunk
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: plays throughout the game, one that really didn't didn't count
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: at the end of the first half where like a
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: couple of seconds they'll just let them run and made
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: a tackle. But Shaq Thompson made a difference again, his size,
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: frame processing, athleticism, the length, the ability to flow off
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: of the interior defensive linemen and make maintain run integrity
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: in terms of gap fits and making fits right was nice.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: But as I talked about too, there was just a
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: different mentality against the run versus Pittsburgh. Now, I don't
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: have a way to quantify, but just watch it on tape.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: They were more physical up front. There was more pop
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: in their hands. They got penetration, they beat guys up,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: They strung wide runs out to the sideline, They squeezed gaps.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: And I read that quote from McDermott on Shack Thompson earlier.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: You know, maybe it was you know, Shack challenging them.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: Maybe it was, you know they had to come to
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: Jesus moment after that Houston game and get run all
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: over again against Houston. Maybe they knew, hey, we know
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: what the Steelers team is, we know what the weather is.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: We cannot let them run the ball. And so they
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: gave more emphasis and in this game, whatever it was,
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: they just played different from a physical standpoint, from a
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: physicality standpoint, I should say, in a violent standpoint, which
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: was nice to see again better tackling. Also some good
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: scheme stuff, like we talked about the well timed corner
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: blitzes from Benford in this game. One leads to you know,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: it's not a run, its pass, but at least to
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: a scoop and score for a touchdown. The other two
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: were both stops and helped stall some Steelers drives which
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: were nice. Daikwan Jones had a good game. I thought
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: he did well to mitigate displacement but also get penetration
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: like Jordan Phillips of all people, at a couple good
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: plays against the run. Greg Russeau had a couple good
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: plays against the run, including that fourth and two stop
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: that starts with Jordan Phillips getting penetration. It forces Jalen
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: Warren to make a cut right into the waiting tree
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: arms of Greg Russou, who makes the stop. They were
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: just different from a run defense standpoint, which was awesome
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: to see. Now again, the Steelers offense is limited, So
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: I don't think this means the run defense is fixed,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: all the problems are solved. We don't have to worry
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: about body types and positional archetypes and everything's fine, and
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: they're gonna be monkey with the cameracks are moving too much.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: It doesn't mean everything is fine. It doesn't mean that
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: everything is fixed. It doesn't mean that we have gotten
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: to the spot where we can breathe like the run
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: defense isn't a concern anymore. I do not agree with
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: that we are going to have to monitor this weekend
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: and week out for the entirety of the season. I
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: still think it is a concern. I do not think
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: it is something that can holistically be fixed this year, because,
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: like I've talked about last week, I think the way
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: to fix the Bills run defense issues is going to
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: take a change in philosophy and identity defensively, and also
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: a change in positional archetypes that they subscribe to in
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: their spine. We'll see if that kind of comes to pass. Also,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: for what it's worth going into this week, the Bengals,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: for all their struggles this year, the quarterbacks that they've played,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: they have the eleventh best run game in terms of
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: EPA per rush. And I'm going to look up what
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: they are from a dvo A standpoints. But you know,
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Chase Brown can move, you know, he Brown is kind
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: of a nice, real like piece out of the backfield,
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: especially when Chase and Higgins are both healthy. But you know,
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: the Bengals have never been this like dominant mall In
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: type of team when it comes to running the ball
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: and what they're able to do. Oh and then also
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: from a DVA standpoint, they're seventh in rushing DVOA. So
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: the Bengals can run the football and then being able
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: to do that while not having Joe Burrow for a
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: chunk of the year, that's even more of a testament
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: to the offense and Zach Taylor and what they've been
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: able to do. I am hopeful for the run defense. Again,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: I still think it's going to be a struggle and
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: I still think it's going to be issue, but it is.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: I don't care that the Steelers are a bad football
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: team on offense or Aaron Rodgers or the weather, the
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: elements or whatever, or you knew in this game that
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: you had to stop the run and you stopped it.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: That's awesome. Let's start there and try and continue to build,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: try and continue to go forward again. We got better
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: play from the interior, we got better gap category, we
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: got better run fits. I do think Shaq Thompson is
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: an important part of that run defense being better because
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: of his ability to make the defense right even when
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: they're wrong, or make individual guys you know right when
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: they get moved or they're wrong. His ability to set
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: the defense, call the defense, and then his individual play
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: and flow within each play. He makes a difference. But
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: the team as a whole, I think played better from
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: a run defense standpoint on a week where they had
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: to and again Pittsburgh passing offense. It helps that they
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: didn't have to allocate a ton of resources to shut
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: that down, so they could allocate more to the run defense.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: Game script also helped to right. The Steelers in this
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: game only ran the ball eighteen times to the Bills
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: fifty one, So yeah, you know, J the warrant had
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: ten carries, gain Well had five, Caleb Johnson had two
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: in garbage time, and then Aaron Rodgers had won. Again.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: Those Caleb Johnson ones came in garbage time, So the
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Steelers really only ran the ball like you know, fifteen
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: or sixteen true times, so they didn't test the Bills
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: run defense. A bunch game script also helps, so a
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: lot of things worked in their favor, but they still
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: had to come out, they still had to execute. They
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: did cool, build on it, hope for the best going forward.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: I still think it's going to be an issue. It's
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: just going to be a matter of how much of
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: an issue it can be. Again, they're not going to
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: become an amazing run defense this year. What they did
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: against the Steelers from a run defense standpoint, I don't
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: think they're going to replicate that weekend and week out.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: They just have to be middle of the pack. They
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: just have to not be the worst run defense in
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: the league. That's it. Don't be thirty second, don't be
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: twenty sixth get to like eighteenth or nineteenth, Get to
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: be somewhere around there, because that means you're having some
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: good games. Oh you're getting got a little bit, but
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: you're getting yours right. Increase your stuff rate, tackle better
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: and be okay. It was encouraging to see the play
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: there and again as they get healthier, maybe down the stretch,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: as you get some dudes back, maybe that improves a
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: little bit as well. Um, yeah, I am uh, I'm excited.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: Bills are electric. Says yeah again Cincinnati, our run defense
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: will be will be tested again. Absolutely, and bos was
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: probably doubtful, yes, likely. I'm disappointed. And Swin say is
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: gonna have to put up a lot of points to
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: win this weekend. Yeah, I feel like the beat Cincinnati,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: you gotta put up at least thirty. I don't think
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: the Bills are holding Cincinnati to under twenty five, but
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: we'll see. Thank you James. James says he loves the
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: dueling trees. I appreciate it. Yeah, holiday tree is up,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: or the Christmas tree is up? And uh that the
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: little tree there. Yeah, happy Holidays is a good time.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: I'm very excited. The only thing I want to incorporate
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: I love blue lights. I love blue garland and blue lights,
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: and I want to incorporate that more. But I think the
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: white pops more on the screen and the show. I'm
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: still torn though, but I appreciate you, um Charles saying
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: this same Bernard conversation applies to you. Aaron Johnson also
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: this season. Yeah, he's man. Terreon Johnson was never the
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: best athlete in coverage, although he did have that game
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: against Dallas where he locked up Ceedee lamb well in
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: Buffalo against Dallas. But yeah, he's he struggled at coverage
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: in coverage at times this year. But the run defense
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: has been the biggest one. Just him, you know, not
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: having that quick trigger. Not We've watched Taron Johnson take
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: on pulling guards and get off them and make plays.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: He's just not even in the picture at times, Like yeah,
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: it's it's disappointing to see what Terren Carl again with
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: the super chat. Thank you for still being here, Carl,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: Thank you for the super chat, Carl says. Mina asked
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: CBE today, hold on, I need to know who CB is.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: Tell me who CB is. As I read the rest
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: of your I think I know what it is, but
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: I want to make sure. But you said Mina Kimes
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: ask CV today, and I wanted your take in defensive
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: passing yards per game in twenty twenty four, the Bills
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: were twenty first. Oh so so literally asked Christian Benford. Oh,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: that's cool. She talked to Benford. That's really cool. So
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: Mina Chimes, thank you, appreciate you chat. Everybody in the chat,
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: thank you very much, Carl says. So I'm gonna start
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: from the beginning. Mina Chimes, asked Christian Benford. I figured
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: it was Benford. Now I feel dumb for I was like,
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: I should have just rolled with it. Someone also commented
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: something to me today and said c B. And I
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: was like, do you meet Are you abbreviating cornerback or
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: are you abbreviating Christian Benford. I'm just all over the
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: place of this. So again, thank you Carl uh for
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: the super jat and the question and for putting this
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: on on my radar. I didn't know, so Mina Chimes
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: ask Christian Benford today, and I wanted to take in
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: defensive passing yards per game. In twenty twenty four, the
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: Bills were twenty first with two hundred and twenty three
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: point one, But in twenty twenty five they're first with
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: one sixty three point two. Why the turnaround, Poyer, Trey Bishop, Yeah, oh,
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: so it was Kay Adams. The chat is maybe saying,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: I don't want to put water on this fire damp
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: in it. But I'm gonna say a couple of things
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: that probably aren't like great for the turn around conversation part.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: I'll say from total yards one, you know, yards aren't
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: necessarily indicative of how good you are one way or
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: the other. This is a really good example for it, right, Like,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: so the Bills don't have a lot of you know,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: passing yards per game on them, and so you might
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: sit there and think not you, but a person in
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: general might sit there and be like, man, you know what,
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: Like they have a great pass defense because they're only
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: giving up like the lowest pass yards in the league
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: per game. That must be amazing. And even if I
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: go to next Gen, yeah, they're first in the league
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: and one hundred and sixty three point two, but juxtapose
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: that with their rushing yards per game allowed. Again, I
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: don't like to go by yards, but the Bills have
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: the third most rushing yards per game allowed at one
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: hundred and forty one point three. So for me, it's
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: a simple answer of teams are just running the ball
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: on the Bills and they don't have to pass Like
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: I I go back to that Tampa Bay game and
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: I said it, like, I understand, you can't silo yourself.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: The Bucks offense started to hurt themselves by passing the football.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: All they needed to do was just keep running the
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: hell out of the football and they would have been golden,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: Like that's all they needed to do. So I think
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: some of the turnaround is teams are running the ball
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: more than they are passing the ball, and they're having
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: success on the ground, so they don't have to pass
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: as much. I also think yards per game in general
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: are probably a bit down. I would imagine across the
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: board in the NFL, because of the kickoff rules, you're
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: seeing more teams starting drives at the thirty, the thirty five,
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: the forty, So there's not a lot of drives or
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: yards being had per drive. Even if someone scores all
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: the way, they're not really putting up these seventy five
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: eighty yard drives on a touchdown. Now it's more sixty
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: sixty five. And then the type of you know, teams
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: running the ball more, there's less possessions. The game is
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: getting shorter. So I would imagine yards per game in
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: general are down across the league from a totality standpoint,
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: and then in particular for the Bills. The biggest thing
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: for me, in conjunction with the yards being down because
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: of starting five position going up on kickoffs, I would
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: think it's just because defenses are running the ball more
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: on the Buffalo Bills and finding success, and that would
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: be the big thing for me. Now, I will say
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: since Sean McDermott took over, they've been better in coverage.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: They have run significantly less spot drop zone, they have
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: run more match coverage. They have been attaching to guys
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: and it's there. They're running man match, they're running zone match,
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: they're passing off and communicating well. I do think their
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: pass coverage is good this year, but I think that
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: from a total yards perspective or standpoint, it's due more
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: to teams just running on them and having success running
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: on them and deciding that they don't have to pass
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: the ball. And yeah, and I do again, I think
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: they have some good I think Poyer has helped stabilize
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: some things a little bit. I think Trey's having a
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: better year than he's given credit for. I think Bishop
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: has improved. I'm not completely all aboard the Bishop hype
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: that I know some folks are. You know, I think
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: he's made He's improved this year. I think he has
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: raised his flo and he's made some crazy splash plays
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: and I do think you know, Jordan Hancock and cam
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Lewis coming in on third downs, which allows him to
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: either play deep cold bish of that allows him to
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: either play deep or play as that monster man big
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: nickel in and around the box where he is still
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: that is where he's still at his best. Even though
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: he's improved farther and deeper, he's still at his best
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: in and around the box on the line of scrimmage.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: I think that's helped him kind of unlock, you know,
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: his ability a little bit. I still don't think he's
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: a work in progress, and I'm I'm not in love
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: with him as much as as some other folks are.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: But he has played well this year. But again to
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: your point, and this is a good they can put
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: this on a radar and a good question. Yeah, I
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: do think from a yards perspective, it's I think there's
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: less yards across the league because the kickoff return stuff.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: But with the Bills in particular, in this teams are
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: running on him a ton, so they just don't have
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: to pass. M hm hmmm, Cam, well, yeah, fair Bills
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: are saying teams for to run on the bills. That's right. Yeah,
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: Cam Moorey says you don't need to pass on the
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: Bills when every other running back as a career high
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: rushing day. Yeah, we you have Sean Tucker looking like
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: h l Danny and Tomlinson. You are you are in
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: a in a rough spot, uh, to say the least.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: And yeah, we will. We will see what their past
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: defense looks like this week against Cincinnati. It will be
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: a tough task even if Higgins is out. But if
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: Higgins is in and it's Higgins and Chase and Burrow
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: and Kasiki doesn't block, but he's fairs like a wide
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: receiver three and a slot worker. Yoshavask can do some stuff.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: Chase Brown catches the ball in the backfield. They like
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: to get the ball to him out of the backfield.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: We'll see what their past defense can do, and uh,
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: what the run defense can do. Also within that James's
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: and have you discussed our most ferocious block or Tyrol
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: Shavers I tuned in late? I have not yet. I
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: am getting to the Bills run game, uh shortly, and
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: when I do, I will be talking about him. Jason says,
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: do you think Babbage will be the defensive coordinator next season?
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: I don't think so, and I apologize for saying it
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: because I don't like to call for anyone's job. Ever,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: I also hope not. I don't between what I saw
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: last year from run defense standpoint and then the turnaround
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: in the defense this year or the changes I should
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: say once McDermott took over. You either got to bring
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: in an experience or better DC, or let McDermott run
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: this defense. That's it. Like I I'm out on Babbage unfortunately. Okay, Oh,
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: I want to grab this question real quick as it
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: ties in how concerned are you about how the offenses
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: looked this year when the opponent has had extra time
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: to prepare. It's a small sample, but it could say
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: something about predictability one thousand percent. The Bills already are
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: a predictable offense, so if you get more time to prepare,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: you can see much how predictable they are, and you
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: can pick up more on their tells and their tendencies
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: and they're telegraphing percent That's one of the first things
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: I thought of with you know, how the Patriots played
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: him because they had a bunch of dudes in that
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: building who were so experienced with playing the Bills and
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: they kind of knew what was up a little bit.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: But it's also part of why I'm really nervous for
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: the next Patriots game, because they have a bye week
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: and they already played the Bills. And yeah, so I
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: think they're predictable already in their offense, unfortunately. And you
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: tie that into teams having more time to watch and
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: more time to prepare and have more sample size. Yeah,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: it it. It definitely says something about predictability. They are predictable,
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: and then teams having more time to prepare. It just
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: leans into that as well. And yet, exactly your point,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: Cincinnati has a minibie they played on Thursday, they played
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: on Thanksgiving night. They do have that mini by sucks.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: It is not helpful, and that's another very worrisome point.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Actually was gonna mention that later, but now I don't
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: have to mention that in my notes because you brought
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: this question. Now absolutely one thousand percent. This next piece,
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: after the run defense, I talked about this person a
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: little bit in relation to it. Christian Penford. Multiple run
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: stops in this game, but just a really strong game
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: in general, multiple run stops. He shadowed DK Metcalf. I
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: do want to talk about that a little bit, because
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: he did have help when shadowing DK Metcalf, you know,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: even in true man or just kind of his own stuff,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: like he would have help over the top or like
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: true brackets where he could he could jam and get
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: physical with the line and kind of get into a
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: trail technique and play underneath. But he played well. He
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: played physical, he battled, not just against DK, but in general.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: The multiple corner blitzes and the run stops were nice.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: The interception was really nice to see. Yes, there's the
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: overthrow and you've got the help from you know, Dorian
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: sinking a little bit and then Shaq Thompson matching that
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: intermediate route which helps sail the throw from Mason Rudolph.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: But Benford is able to make that interception because he
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: puts himself in position by spacing the deep route from
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: DK and then the route underneath. And I you know,
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: I think he talked about it. I saw the postgame
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: interview with him. He talked about it. Like that they
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: ran like double sevens. He saw it coming. He was
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: reading the quarterback. He was reading Mason Rudolph like the
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: angle of his shoulders and trying to decipher is he
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: trying to hit the deep seven to Metcalf or is
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: he trying to hit the one underneath? And Benford spaced
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: them appropriately while reading the quarterback and still being able to,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: you know, kind of get to either route in the distribution.
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: And then he read the QB came up, was in
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: the right place at the right time, and then he
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: makes the pick, gets both feet down in bounds, really
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: really really really really nice play for Christian Benford, and
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: I think he's continued, do you know, get better as
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: the year has gone on. I never thought he fell
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: off a cliff, like seemingly the whole world. Did you know?
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: His contract is terrible, what a horrible resigning. He's awful.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: He's more like a CV three than a CBE one
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: all the hyperbole that was around him. I never thought
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: he fell off a cliff like a lot of other
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: folks did. I also don't think he's in this rare
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: or top tier form right now like others might. I famously,
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: for those of you on the show, I said, going
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: into the year, I thought he had a chance to
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: firmly play himself into the top ten corners in the
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: league this year. I did not think he was a
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: top ten corner coming into this year. I think this
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: year has kind of also, you know, kind of lended
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: more support or lent more support to that claim from me,
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: not patting myself in back, just saying, and I know
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: he's been banged up this year, So the healthier is
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: he's gotten shocking, he's gotten better. But it's nice to
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: see his improved play and it's very helpful for this
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: defense if he can get back to the form where
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: some people think he's in the top ten or some
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: people think he's in the top five, or at worst
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: he's top fifteen or whatever. If you can get to
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: him to a spot where he is a true CB
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: one for you, again, it does a lot for unlocking
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: the rest of this defense. And him shadowing and traveling
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: with DK in man An Zone was really cool to
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: see getting in some press stuff, some off stuf, some
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: low red zone stuff, seeing him take the fight to DK.
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: In an ideal world, if T Higgins is healthy, I'm
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: putting Benford on Higgins everywhere he goes, because I think
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: that's fighting fire with fire. I don't think Higgins has
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: an athleticism advantage against Benford like Chase does. Where it
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: can over it can, it makes a big difference and
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: swings the pendulum. Yes, T. Higgins is a monster. Benford
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: is also kind of a monster. Is a corner. I
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: like the idea of letting those two I don't know,
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: terodactyls or whatever kind of dinosaurs they are, Like, I
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: like the idea of those two dudes battling it out.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: And then I'm putting Tray White or Max on Chase,
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: and I'm giving safety help over the top, and I'm
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: letting benfor I'm telling Benford like, hey, man, if Higgins plays,
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: you're on him all day, beat the hell out of him,
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: and see what's good. That's it. He's gonna get you.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: You're gonna get got. But I'm putting Benford on Higgins,
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: and I'm letting him battle and fight and punch and
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: jam and beat the hell out of him for four
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: quarters and the cold and the snow, and then go
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: from there. And if he gets Moss at some point
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: or T. Higgins does one of the prototypical. You know,
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: makes a fifty to fifty ball and eighty twenty ball. Cool,
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: tip your cap and move on. Beat the hell out
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: him for four quarters and see what it gets you.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: That is what I would hope if t Higgins plays.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: If he doesn't, you can change things up a little bit.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: I'd still do the Bill Belichick idea of then I'm
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: still if Higgins is out, I'm doubling Jamar Chase, and
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: I'm putting Benford on whoever's out there, and I'm like, yo, Benny,
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: they got a wide receiver three out there, go be
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: a CB one, lock them up and make sure the
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: ball doesn't go that way ever. But yeah, Benford's improved
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: play matters a lot because you can do those types
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: of things. And for a defense, this is how I
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: like to connect things here for a defense that has
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: struggled to stop the run this year, helpful not cure all,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: but a helpful way to combat struggling against the run
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: is use more bodies gap out right instead of Okay,
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: there's seven potential blockers, let's put seven in the box. Nope,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: let's put eight up. There's eight potential blockers. Okay, let's
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: put nine. Like we have to gap out. We have
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: to see what we can do. Right. That idea gets
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: more power to it when you have corners outside that
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: you can leave on an island, when you know, like, okay,
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: we can go single high and we can shade our
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: post safety a little over to this side to help
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: our CB two because we have a true CB one
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: out there and we can just let him rock, whether
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: it's true like man coverage and Cover one or if
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: it's Cover three and it's like, hey, it's Cover three
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: and you have a deep third, but that's your dude.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: You're on him. We're gonna shade everything everywhere else. Right.
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: It helps coverage, but it helps to run defense as well,
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: knowing that you have a dude out there that doesn't
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: require safety help and can fight fire with fire by
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: himself on the outside. So shout out to Benford for
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: a scoop and score touchdown, multiple nice corner blitzes and
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: run stops in this game, and an interception. You know,
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: he really helped kind of turn this game on its
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: head a little bit. Really awesome to see him starting
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: to trend upwards again as we move towards the playoffs,
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: move into the home stretch, crazy. That is, he's getting healthier,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: he's you know, or as he's probably getting healthier, he's
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: getting better. Shock how that works? Really cool to see?
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: Now the next piece I want to talk about here
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: Where's where is it? I want to talk about the
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: run game in particular, you know, becaus I'm phrasing it
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: here like can the run game keep this up? Slash
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: and or carry the offense? What I want to talk
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: about and you know I mentioned earlier with you guys
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: put in the what was it the film the film
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: watchers or whoever said the twenty nine times thing? Oh,
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: let me stop? Kay Moore asked a good question, Kam Moore,
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: He says, in your semi realistic dream world, oh what
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: experienced defensive mind? Would you want to shake free? To
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: be the DC? I see a clean house. I see
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: a clean house. Wow? Why am I struggling today? I
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: see a house cleaning coming in Atlanta with Raheem Morris
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: and Jeff Olbrich. Any interest there anybody else? You know?
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: What sucks?
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: Is?
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: I wish this was last year. I wanted lou Ana Roumo,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: I wanted Robert Salah. Those were the guys that you
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: know to kind of use your phrasing here that shook
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: free last year, that those are the guys who I
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: wanted right now, I'd have to see, like who actually
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: let me go into the NFL standings right now? Uh,
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: but let's see who. Let's let's kind of divert from
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: our regular schedule program and see. Okay, so I don't
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: know Titans, no Giants, no Saints, no Raiders, no commanders,
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: know Brown Who who I would say the Brown's defensive coordinators,
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: Jim Schwartz. M I wouldn't be opposed to that. If
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: they do a house cleaning in Cleveland and Stefanski goes
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: and oh, you guys both should sports, that's funny. Yeah.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: And if Schwartz comes in, if I mean the Bills,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: would Minnesota's kind of fallen off a cliff. If Kevin
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: O'Connell gets clipped, I'd love to get Brian Flores in here.
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: I don't think that would jibe with McDermott. That would
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: be my of guys who I think could get who
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: could shake loose, it'd be Schwartz and Flora's. I think
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: Schwartz you could get into Buffalo because I think him
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: and McDermott could get along from a identity standpoint, But
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: that's also part of it too, Like you have to
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: find somebody who will run the McDermott system, And that's
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: part of it too, right, Like all of like the
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: realism or the dream world, it all comes down to,
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: like how much McDermott is willing to change his defensive
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: philosophy and or identity and or him and Bean and
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: or him or Bean and Bean or whichever are willing
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: to change the positional archetypes on the interior, because like
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: that's you can knock so many dudes off the list
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: because they don't fit what be wants and or what
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: McDermott wants from a body type standpoint, archetype standpoint, and
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: identity philosophy standpoint. But if I had my druthers again
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: going through, Yeah, I look at the vikings are four
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: and eight, and things seem to be falling off terribly there.
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: You know, maybe O'Connor, I would take both guys. Actually,
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: if they both got clipped, I would take Kevin O'Connell's
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: offensive coordinator, take Brian Flora's defensive coordinator. But even though
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: you have Flores or O'Connell's had the head coach there
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: that's what I would rock with. I also like Arizona's DC,
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: but that ain't gonna happen here. Yeah, so that would
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: be me Flores or Jim Schwartz would be where I go.
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: Or if things really fall off a cliff, maybe Steve's
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: Bagnolo gets fired, I would bring Steve's bagnolo. That would
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: be awesome. But we'll see what happens. After that, good
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: question came more you think I I think you're again
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: for sending me to the DM and the Discord. I'm
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: gonna check that out as soon as the episode is done. Ah,
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: Claude says it. Yeah, I said it last week. You know.
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: McDermott learned under Jim Johnson in Philly, and Jim Johnson
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: was play on the front foot attack and smashed dudes
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: in the face and blitz zone blitz his pressure. Again,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: the game is different, right, Like Jeremiah Trotter is the
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: type of linebacker that could live in today's NFL. Like
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: he let alone like the other guys that they had
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: on that defense. Right, So I understand the nature of
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: not being like that completely, but yes, I would think
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: because he has that Jim Johnson blood in him, I've
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: said it for years, like I don't know he the
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: Carolina defense, And again I was understood the Carolina defense.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: You have a nasty front four, and you've got two
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: all pro linebackers. You had an all pro corner. I
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: get just rushing for and dropping seven and playing corverage
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: left and right. I get it. But you don't have
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: that in Buffalo. I'm surprised every year that doesn't tap
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: into more of the Jim Johnson Philly defense. But yes,
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: it was a different game then, it's a different game.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: Now you can't necessarily live that way. But I say
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: it every year. I said it on last week's episode.
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: I don't get it. Don't get it. Now, let's talk
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: about this Bills run game. Those who don't know, two
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: hundred and forty nine yards most versus a Steelers team
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: in Pittsburgh since nineteen seventy five. They also set the
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: opponent rushing record at this Steelers stadium. James Cook and
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: Ray Davis h ran the ball very well. We talked
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: about the concepts a little bit earlier, mid zone, inside zone,
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: and do them. We talk about those as we go forward.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: Here some metrics and a little bit of some raw stuff.
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: Eight runs of ten or more yards for the Bills
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: in week thirteen, that was the most on the week.
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: But then the metrics, and I talked about this a
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: little earlier, they were ninth and success rate at forty
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: seven point one and the twelfth in EPA per rush.
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: Like I think, you sit there and you say, man,
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: they ran for two hundred and forty nine yards. They
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: set this record, Oh my god, Like they probably had
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: an amazing day. Like I talked about, there were more
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: negative runs slash plays than it may seem given the
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: volume stats and the record talk in all of that
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: kind of stuff. The duo runs are a good example.
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna I charted every single one. We're gonna go
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: over each one of them and the results. And I
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: think that kind of is a good microcosm for this.
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: And you've said it before, Joe Brady lived by the Sword,
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: Die by the Sword. I guess you could adjust it
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: this week to do live by the spam, Die by
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: the spam. You know, he's running duo back to back
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: to back. He's running you know, mid zone back to
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: back plays, he's running inside zone. It's the drive starters
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: on the first two drives, like the tendency the telegraphing,
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: the tells the predictability. It was there. But Pittsburgh had
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: an issue stopping the run and stopping you know, their
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: runs from this particular presentation, and had an issue with
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: mid zone and issue with duo, and the Bills rode that.
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: But again, there were a little more downs than I
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: think people kind of think considering all the ups they
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: had in this game. So the Bill's first duo run
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: came roughly midway through the second quarter, at the eight
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: to oh four mark. They had fourteen runs before their
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: first duo run, so that means nineteen of their next
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: thirty six thirty seven runs were duo. So more than
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: fifty percent of their runs from middle of the second
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: quarter through the end of the game were duo. And
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: here are all their games. Because again I talked about it,
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: this run duo as a concept, it worked this presentation,
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: whether from eleven personnel or twelve personnel, it worked because
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: they could get to duo on this side, they could
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: get to the mid zone stuff or inside zone on
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: this side, same presentation, same personnel groups, same motion, trying
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: to kind of they know what we know, but we
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: know that they know that we know. Type of deal.
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: It worked for them, but there were more struggles than
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: I think were kind of giving credit for her, kind
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: of acknowledged a lot of their work here again, Tyrrel Shavers,
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: as James mentioned earlier in the chat huge week, whether
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: it was the front side stuff on duo or even
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: when they kind of put him hipped off of Ryan
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: Vandermark on the left side and they ran duo opposite
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: of him to the tight end side, whether it was
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: him washing dudes down on the mid zone runs, the
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: inside zone runs, Tyrol Shavers was a monster. Kalusha Kiir
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: was a good blocker in this game. Dawson Knox was
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: a good blocker in this game. Jackson Hawes was a
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: good blocker in this game. Hawes was good. I think
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: he had He's another one. I think he had some
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: more downs that are beging talked about. I saw some
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: people talking about him being like the best blocking tight
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: end in the league. I don't think that's true. And
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: this game he again he got beat at times, but
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: he watching him block. You high Black who's three hundred
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: and seventy pounds, He's blocking JJ watt uh tj I
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: did it again and giving him a little bit even
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: if he gets beat after, but he's holding him initially
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: at the point of attack and doing what he needs
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: to do, let alone digging out like linebackers and safeties
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff. It's a really good execution.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: But these duo runs, so again, it started midway through
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: the second quarter. Here are there gains on all the
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: duo runs from the first one midway through the second
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: quarter to the last one towards the end of the
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: fourth quarter. Fourteen yards three yards, seven yards, four yards,
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: nine yards, two yards, six yards, three yards, seven yards,
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: one yard, thirteen yards, zero yards negative three yards three yards,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: seven yards negative three yards, five yards, three yards, zero yards.
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: So again on the whole eighty one yards on nineteen
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: carries for duo in particular, that concept that is a
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: yards per carry of four point two two that well,
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: four point two six around up to four point three.
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: That is successful. That is a good chunk. That's nice.
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: But again I think that concept ties to like, Okay,
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: that's why they only had a forty seven point one
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: success rate on the weekend. We're nice. That's why their
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: EPA per rush was twelfth on the weekend, not super high,
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: because they had some good chunks again, they ripped off
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: you know, fourteen yards seven yards, nine yard six seven
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: thirteen seven, like five healthy chunks. But then you also
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: add three two three one zero negative three three negative
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: three three zero. A lot of these done out of
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: eleven and twelve personnel. I'm gonna go so same same
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: plays that I rattled off the yards for, I'm gonna
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: rattle off the personnel in order from middle of the
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: second quarter through the end. Eleven personnel eleven eleven, eleven, eleven, eleven, twelve, twelve, twelve, eleven, twelve, twelve,
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: twenty two, twelve twelve, twenty two, eleven eleven, twenty two.
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: They started to work in some gigillium towards the end,
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: when things were like twenty three eight to seven and
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: twenty six to seven in the game. Wasn't hand a
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: little bit, but they were leaning into Shakir Shavers and
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: that eleven personnel and then usually throwing Cooks out as
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: the solo receiver as the X, but they could have
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: been anybody gave Davis two, it didn't matter, and then
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: leaning into Hawes and knocks in twelve personnel. Good stuff
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: from them, really mashing, and then even two being in
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: twelve personnel and having it be Knocks and Hawes, and
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: then one of your two receivers is Tyrrel Shavers still
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: attached to them working really well. And again everything was
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: that trips or tight bunch type of deal. So if
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: we're going to the right here you have your five
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: offensive lineman, it goes to Alec Anderson. In line next
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: to him is Jackson Hawes, and then you'd have Khalil
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: Shakir on his inside foot or on his outside foot,
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: and then Tyrol Shaver's on his inside foot, and then
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: the twelve personnel stuff you would have Hawes or in
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: line usually Hawes. Then you'd have Knocks hipped off of him,
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: slightly off the line, and then Shavers would be behind
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: the two of them. So it's still like a not
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: a traditional type of bunch look, but it's still a
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: tight trip still kind of a bunch look. There they
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: leaned into the same presentation, the same personnel groupings, the
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: same formula, essentially over and over and over again. Also
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: a fun note, I tweeted this late last night, but
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: bye the bills. Uh. They were in twelve personnel on
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: thirty six thirty six point five percent of their snaps
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: versus the Steelers. That was their highest rate of twelve
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: personnel on the year. Their previous high was against the
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: Bucks and it was seventeen point nine percent. So they
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: doubled their previous twelve personnel their previous highest twelve personnel
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: rate from several weeks ago against the Bucks. They leaned
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: into twelve ran the ball, leaned in to eleven ran,
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: the ball mashed, mash, mashed, mashed, mashed, mashed, and on
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: the whole it worked out. But again, as I went
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: in those numbers, I don't think it was as strong
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: of a performance as it may seem. It got the
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: job done. They set a record from a volume standpoint,
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: but from a metrics standpoint and an efficiency standpoint, still good,
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: right twelfth and EPA per rush ninth and success rate.
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: But you're putting up a record and you're rushing for
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: two hundred and forty nine yards. I think it's fair
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: to assume all they must have been like top three
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: at worst, or probably first or second in EPA per
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: rush and success rate, and they were not, which I
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: think is interesting. Now I want to also actually let's
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: grab this comment here, but can you bring this knife
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: to a gunfight. We won't find out. I still think
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: you know, and Jason, I see your comment as well
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: or your question. I'm gonna tie that in now. I
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: still think it's going to be tough for them to
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: run against teams that are better run defenses, you know,
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: teams that have better players and or better coaching, and
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: or teams that have good corners. Again, the Patriots, I
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: think are gonna be an issue because Gonzales and Davis
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: are a good corner tandem on the outside, and Barmore
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: and Williams are a problem on the interior, let alone
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: the linebackers and how they fit against the run. So
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: as you face better teams and teams you're gonna face
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: in the playoffs, like if the Colts are healthy, You've
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: got Bucker and Grover Stewart on the interior, and then
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: behind them you got Pratt, and you got Zaire Franklin,
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: and then behind them it's cam Bine him and Nick Cross.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: We'll see. I didn't see the injury to Sauce Gardner
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: was confirmed there, but oh no Williams next week. That's helpful,
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: good call, kay More, you thank you for that. So
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: you're just dealing with Barmore and then what's his face?
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: Whose name? I can never they put him in on
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: offense too. Oh what is his name? I forget all
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: the time. Ah, well Tong is hurt too, that's the
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: other guy I was talking, so man, So yeah, the
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: Pats might be down on the interior in a couple
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: of weeks. No Tonga, I always forget his first name, yea,
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: No Tonga uh and no million Williams would help. But yeah,
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: thank you, Kay Moore, your crushing. I appreciate you. I
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: see your follow ups there. Yeah. I think they'll struggle
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: against teams that have more talent on the interior and
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: or teams that have good or athletic corners on the outside.
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: If they face teams with both, it's going to be
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: a big problem. They still need to be able to
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: pass the ball in some way. I don't think they can,
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: you know, kind of going into my question here, can
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: they can the run game keep this up? Carry the offense.
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: I think they will continue to be a successful running team.
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: I don't think it can completely carry the offense like
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: it did this week where Josh Allen completes the ball
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: fifteen times for one hundred and twenty three yards and
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: you win that game. Like, that's going to be tough
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: sledding in the playoffs. To be that one dimensional in
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: that side of they are going to have to push
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: the ball downfield and win on the outside and win
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: downfield at some point and generate chunk plays. They are
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: going to have to do that. If they don't, I
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: think it likely likely is a death sentence for them. Now,
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: could they still win without during that? Without doing that? Sure,
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: maybe they can run the ball gun good enough. There's
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: a chance they can. Maybe they get more turnovers on
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: defense and that and it flips the pendulum right and
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: kind of makes the difference. There are paths to success
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: without the pass game kind of pulling its weight like
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: it needs to. But I think it's gonna be tough
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: slim also. Again, so we went through the duo plays.
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: So again nineteen plays, and this is me charting this.
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: This is I'm not pulling, you know. I went to
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: this site and looked up duo runs. I charted all
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: these These are just my charting notes. So nineteen carries
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: for duo, six for mid zone, five for inside zone.
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: The mid zone runs and the inside zone runs essentially
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: start out kind of the same way. Again, that similar presentation,
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: that similar type of look, and you're getting the running
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: back in the backfield, so single back, backfield look, and
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: you are getting that drop step from them, and they
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: are getting their shoulders like forty five degrees. On the
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: mid zone runs, their ain point is the inside leg
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: of the offensive tackle, So you're essentially looking at like
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: the B gap, but the inside leg of the offensive tackle.
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: On inside zone, their aim point is the inside the
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: leg of the guard. What we were seeing early on
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: is there was more inside zone, which the Bills don't
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: do a ton of. They've done some more this year,
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: but they traditionally in majority this year, been a mid
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: zone team when they run zone runs, especially out of
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: this presentation. So you'll get that drop step from the
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: running back, they'll turn their shoulders essentially to the B gap,
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: and they'll go right for that inside leg of the
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: offensive tackle. Maybe they'll stay there, maybe they'll cut back,
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: go wherever. You know. Leg zone runs do flow like water,
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: find the hole, go from there right. But the inside
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: zone runs early you were seeing that drop step and
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: that shoulder turn, but instead of continuing on that angle,
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: it was a turn and an upfield getting into more
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: of the inside leg of the guard, getting into more
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: of that a gap immediately downhill presence, which I guess
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: is under stainable or more understandable why that dude thought
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: it was they all the same run because duo can
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: look like inside zone, but this didn't present like that,
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: So I don't really think that's excusable, But to each
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: their own whatever. Not to mention too, they ran a
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: bunch of mid zone in this game, but there runs
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: in this game. Early on it was mid zone and
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: early on it was inside zone. Then they started adding
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: in duo, found duo, stayed with it, got back to
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: some of their mid zone stuff. During the game, Ray
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: Davis had a couple of successful runs on midzone and
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: some duo stuff, and that's what they leaned into in
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: this game again because like we talked about, they can
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: get to either run from the same presentation and there's
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: minimal tells. Now, yes, there is kind of a tell like, Okay,
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: they're in this look, they're either gonna run duo or
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: they're gonna rund like midzone week Like, yes, that's a tendency,
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: Yes that's a tell. One you still have to stop it.
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: So if you can execute at a high level cool
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: you can get you can play above that if you're
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: the bills, but also the accounting for both of those
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: require you to have numbers or ass kickers or winners
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: on both sides. You have to do it on the
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: front side, strong side, you have to do it on
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: the weak side backside, like you have to do that
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: either way on both sides. That's a tough ask. So
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: it may be like, well, we know it's either going
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: to be A or it's going to be B, but
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: it's hard to allocate resources to simultaneously stop A and
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: B at the same time, which is a nice little
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: thing for them, So there's a chance they could ride
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: this wave going forward. I also think it's interesting that
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: they kind of debted that blast counter look that I
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: love so much, but because they run it from only
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: one presentation or they don't really run anything else out
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: of that presentation, teams have included on it and keyed
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: in on it. They even got into it a little
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: bit this week, but then would run like zone to
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: the weak side, opposite of the strong side of the forum,
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: opposite of the strong eye or the offset. I it
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: got shut down both times. I think I ran it twice.
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: It did not work, but I liked that they were
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: showing that, making you think like, here comes blast counter
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: and then it wasn't that run. But the issue was
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: it was still going to the same side, and I
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: think Steelers were still kind of sensing it or thinking
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: that the blast counter was coming in either way. Playing
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: for that led them to stop that run. But it's
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: nice to see the Bills can lean into this piece.
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: I've talked about it last year when they did the
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: same thing, like they can run mid zone week and
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: they can run duo, and they can do it from
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: the same personnel, the same presentation, the same alignment, the
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: same motions, the same formation. They could do it into
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: the boundary, they can do it into the field. It
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: doesn't matter. Like they can run both and you can
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: sit there and be like, well, they don't really do
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: anything else out of that. One thing that was nice
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: is they showed that presentation later in the game in
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: the fourth quarter, and you thought, do what was coming
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: and they went play action and they hit Dawson Knox,
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: which was nice. Now you are limiting yourself to a
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: degree if you're only going to run out of this presentation.
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: I do think more play action out of this presentation
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: would help in particular Boots, but that's just my general philosophy.
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: In gen what was nice in this game. They did
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: have a thirty four point eight play action rate on
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: this in this game, which was seventh highest on the week.
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: Nice to see. But I think they can ride this
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: presentation in this grouping, you know, with how their wide
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: receiver room is built, with how their tight ends are built,
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: and go forward from there. And again it may be, hey,
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: eighty five percent of the time, we know it's gonna
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: be mid zone or it's gonna be duo. But even
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: though you know it's probably gonna be A or B,
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: it's hard to equally allocate resources to A and B
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: to stop A or B. And that's where it comes
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: down to, do you have guys that can win one
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: on one if you're the defense. If you do, your
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: odds increase, so on and so forth, And that's where
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: the chess match begins. So I think there's a chance,
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: but it's still gonna be tough if the past game
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: can't do its part. And again, the past game was
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: ugly in this game. Yes, the weather did not help. Yes,
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: there's no Dalton Kincaid. Yes, there's no Josh Palmer. Yes,
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: both of your starting tackles are out all understandable by
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: thought in general. Just the pass catchers, no matter who
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: it was, really just they look slow and sluggish across
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: the board. There was minimal separation shock Alan was skittish
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: at times even when he didn't have to be. I
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: think the past game is still very much a work
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: slash watch in progress with very real concerns. They are predictable.
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: They don't push the ball down the field, you know
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: with Alan and or conceptually and or by design, you know,
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: they run the kind of the same old stuff in
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: high leverage situations as drive starters. Is the feel good stuff. Like,
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: there's not really a lot of variability. There's not a
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: lot of talent, there's not a lot of creativity or effectiveness.
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: I do think there's struggles in the past against Pittsburgh,
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: like I mentioned earlier, are glossed over, understandably so by
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: the overall win and the performance on the ground. And
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: I do like that play action rate. But they are
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: going to have to get more from the past going forward.
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: I just even though the AFC is wide open, I
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: think it's the odds of them getting the right game
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: script working in twofold. The odds of them getting the
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: right game script working for them where they don't have
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: to worry about their run defense and they don't have
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: to worry about their passing offense. The odds of them
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: getting that game script are gonna be too hard. Even
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: for one of those things, it's going to be hard.
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: Is it impossible? No, odds are low though for one
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: of those, let alone both. But it's a good performance
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: in this game, obviously, Tom in here saying I like
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: to see more play action out of that strong formation.
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: Look boot out and hit Reggie in the flat. Give
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: me some more slide routes, give me something. They should
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: be a high play action team. They have a dominant
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: run game. They should be a high play action team.
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: They should be a thirty five play action team. They're not,
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: which I remember someone saying it last year, like maybe
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: Allan doesn't like play action or turning his back to
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: the defense. I'm kind of getting into that boat because
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: it makes absolutely no sense that they don't run more
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: play action like it. It's especially this year where they're
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: struggling to pass the ball. Play action is an easy
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: way to get some you know, some chunk plays or
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: some explosives or just get some depletions in general, and
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: it ties into your run game. It's criminal that they're
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: not doing it this year. I don't I don't get it.
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: I don't understand, which makes you think there has to
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: be something else going on. But we'll see. Uh with that,
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: John Devine says, Adam theeling to Buffalo, that would be, uh,
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: that would be I tweeted it yesterday to kind of
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: the that one gift of the lady being like no, no,
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: well and kind of playing that game. I I wouldn't
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: hate it. I wouldn't have a ton of hope for it.
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: I think at this point it dart throws don't hurt
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: because there's not really anywhere to go but up with
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: the wide receiver room. No disrespect, but the feeling would
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: be tough in this offense. But we'll see, we'll see,
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: we'll see. I want to grab some on their RJA
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: talking about play action Yep, yep, yep, Nicholas, yep. More
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: boots would be great, especially with the wide receiver cords,
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: the struggles with operation, plus how good Alan is on
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: the run. I agree, Carl, great comment, he says Josh
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: Allen got a rushing touchdown to set the record, but
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: I gotta say that touchdown belongs to Alec Anderson. Josh
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: will stop and Alec picked Josh up and carried him
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: in from like the three yard line. Yeah. Torrents mashed
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: and then fell down, and then Anderson mashed and picked
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: up and carried it. Was Uh. I tweeted it when
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: it happened that like rugby coaches and rugby teams would
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: be impressed with how good of a mall that was. Like,
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: that was an a tier, classy mall, even though you're
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: not supposed to like lift it. But they got in
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: like mid level they drove. Yeah, and then Anderson carried
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: him up. Beautiful mall for that touchdown. We've seen that before.
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: Uh for the Bills and uh for Allen. Oh steel
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: the Steelers picked up feeling, Oh that's so petty, that's
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: so rude. Understandable but rude. Oh I'm annoyed. I didn't
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: even care that much, but like now I'm annoyed. I'm
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: just annoyed because it's that I hate the Steelers, not
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: because of that, but I just like don't like the
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: as a franchise. I think I've Saithing before on the show.
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: Like Ed Reid's my favorite player, so I would root
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: to I would root for the Ravens when the bill
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: seasons would be done. I also love Terrell Suggs, So
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: I have a healthy hatred for the Steelers and I
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: probably will for forever. Yeah, you know what, I don't
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: have a healthy hatred for the best pizza in Buffalo,
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: New York. One Pie Pizza. I don't say they're the
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: best pizza in Buffalo because they sponsor the show. They
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: sponsor the show because I sincerely believe they are the
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: best pizza in Buffalo, New York. Sweet sauce pie cup
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: and char Pepperoni, a great cheese, the sauce ratio, homemade
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: blue cheese. They make great salads. They have a catering
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: division called Elevated Catering a Buffalo where they do they
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: can do different events or parties or whatever you got
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: going on. They have all these great mac and cheeses,
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: different types of mac and cheese. You can still get
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: the pizza, you can get the salad options. They do
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: a really good chicken and rice and all that stuff.
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: Appreciate you, Joey for recognizing the smooth transition. Wasn't playing,
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: it just happened, Thank you very much. They really are
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: absolutely amazing with their food. The Toys for Tots drive,
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: we are in full effect. I will be getting a
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: list of what the prizes are and options are that
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: I'll be following up on with them. But we got
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: Toys for Tots coming. So go in, get yourself some
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: food that is amazing, like sincerely, and also bring a
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: toy or multiple toys at the same time for that.
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: So go in, treat yourself and your taste buds and
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: or you know, just enter yourself an opportunity to win
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: some stuff in a raffle. Again, a lot of it's
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: a prizes are usually buffalo bills or sabers or sports
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: like merch autograph stuff, helmets, jerseys, tickets. There's also like
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: free pizzas and different stuff. There's a ton of like
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: awesome options. And even if you don't care about any
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: of that, I say it every year. I love Christmas. Obviously,
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: I love this holiday season. It's unfortunately not as awesome
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: for everyone around the world and around the country like
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: it should be. So if you are in a position
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: to donate, if you are in a position to give
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: back if you are in position to make a kid's
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: Christmas or a family's Christmas, or alleviate some stuff from
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: a family or parents that are struggling, and just bring
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: some joy to anyone in any way, shape or form. Again,
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: even if it's not with toys for Tots for One Pie,
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: if it's with donations somewhere else, whatever the hell, if
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: you are able to do some good and try and
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: make a difference to a kid or a family in
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: need this holiday season. So I always encourage that. And
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: I know what One Pie does with the toys, and
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: I know toyster Toots is awesome, and I know you
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: can also get some food at the same time, So
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: that's why I plug that. But in general, donate, do good,
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: you know, give back all that kind of stuff. And yeah,
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: One Pie, They're pizza is fantastic. Guys, I say all
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: the time. They're good people, making really good food, toys
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: for tots, stuff, partnering with Roswell, the SPCA, the Alzheimer's Foundation,
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: just a ton of drives and initiatives to help make
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: the city and the community at large a better place
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: here in Buffalo. And I think that's awesome. So yeah,
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: donate get some pizza all that kind of stuff. Oh, Carlson,
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: I'm going to Buffalo for the Eagles game. Do I
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: get a disc on One Pi Pizza? If I mentioned your name, Yes,
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: mentioned that you are there at One Pie Pizza because
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: you watch this guy's coverage and you love the show
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: and the show is always talking about how amazing One
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: Pie Pizza is and you need to get some One
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: Pie Pizza. Yes, drop the show, drop my name, all
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. They also have a pizza named

- 1:56:24Speaker 1: the ingredients because I always forget. And there's a couple
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: that are absolutely just phenomenal. So it is. They're homemade
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: red sauce, goat cheese, chicken fingers, mozzarella cheese, red onion,
