Sean: Welcome once again to Scenes from the Screen, where we talk about all types of films: obscure, forgotten, prestigious, rotten; big screen and small, we cover it all.
0:10
Sean: Who knows?
0:11
Sean: You might discover a new gem or be reintroduced to an old favorite.
0:14
Sean: My name is Sean, and I'll be your host.
0:16
Sean: All right.
0:16
Sean: Well, for those of you who may or may not have noticed, I decided to change up the intro a little bit...
0:20
Sean: shorter, more streamlined, peppier, touch of jazz, pizzazz, and razzmatazz.
0:24
Sean: And today we...
0:26
Sean: I'm joined again by my lovely wife, Holly.
0:28
Sean: Say hello.
0:30
Hollie: Hello, everyone.
0:31
Sean: Now, a few weeks ago when uh we did Grosse Pointe Blank, we said we were going to be back with a more of a modern film, which uh we did.
0:38
Sean: We watched one over the weekend.
0:40
Sean: It's it was on my radar a couple months ago.
0:43
Sean: I read a little bit about it, and I thought, oh, this sounds really interesting, and then I completely forgot about it.
0:49
Sean: But the other night when I was searching for something to watch, it came up, so I kind of sprung it on you a little bit.
0:55
Hollie: Yes.
0:55
Sean: Well this movie...
0:55
Hollie: A little surprise.
0:56
Sean: ...right, but now so the movie's called Dust Bunny.
0:59
Sean: Now, Dust Bunny is about an eight-year-old girl who hires a hitman to kill the monster under her bed, which is the titular Dust Bunny.
1:08
Sean: Now, I think she's what eight years old, and she says that her the Dust Bunny ate her her family, uh, which you really don't see.
1:18
Sean: You kind of hear screams, so you you know you don't know if it's for sure, if it's her imagination.
1:23
Sean: But yeah, I I want you to go first because you said you made a comment after the movie.
1:29
Sean: So I I guess my question to you is did you like it?
1:33
Hollie: I did like the movie; it was very odd.
1:36
Hollie: And when we first started watching it, I couldn't quite figure out exactly what kind of movie it was.
1:43
Hollie: So I was trying to think of what it reminded me of, and the best thing I came up with is a...
1:49
Hollie: it kind of looks like a Tim Burton, a little bit with the look, mixed with some Wes Anderson with the colors and stuff.
2:00
Hollie: So it was like a Tim Burton meets Wes Anderson meets Marvel.
2:04
Sean: Right.
2:04
Sean: I I would agree that the first two, I thought the third would have been like a John Wick type.
2:08
Hollie: Yes, I yeah, I was thinking like that action, that very very artistic action too.
2:14
Hollie: Like it it was very it was pretty cool.
2:16
Hollie: I actually I like I did like it, yes.
2:19
Sean: Well, I mean it you know it's it's funny because I I I actually thought about it, and and again, I I went in kind of forgetting about what I read about the film.
2:28
Sean: So when I'm watching it, I thought, wow, is this it looks like maybe it was the director was Asian, you know, because it has that sensibility about it.
2:34
Hollie: Yeah, it does have that anime almost like an anime type.
2:37
Sean: Right.
2:37
Sean: It's very whimsical, and you're right that Tim Burton.
2:39
Sean: That's I thought about that immediately.
2:41
Sean: Tim early Tim Burton, like Beetlejuice.
2:43
Sean: It was like it was like Beetlejuice meets almost like John Wick meets.
2:46
Sean: It was so basically it is it's a combination of fantasy, action, black comedy, and horror.
2:54
Sean: So it's not an outright horror film.
2:56
Hollie: No, not at all.
2:57
Sean: Yeah, I because that's what I thought it was gonna be, but it's really not.
2:59
Hollie: No, which I'm glad with the little girl, because I I think the best part of the movie was the little girl.
3:05
Hollie: I thought she was awesome in it.
3:07
Sean: I agree, she's excellent.
3:08
Hollie: Like you really were drawn to her, and you you just wanted to, you know, you would just really hoped he helped her because he she was just so cute and she was she was really good.
3:16
Hollie: The actress was awesome in it.
3:18
Sean: She was, she was she was very believable.
3:20
Sean: And at the point where, so you know, when her family tucks her into bed the one night and they say goodnight, and she says goodbye...
3:27
Hollie: Yes.
3:28
Sean: ...which I I first went, did I just did I just hear that?
3:30
Sean: But she does say goodbye.
3:32
Hollie: And she says it again...
3:32
Sean: Right.
3:32
Hollie: ...to the other parent.
3:33
Sean: Right, to the other.
3:34
Sean: So she says it to both parents at two separate times.
3:36
Sean: So it wasn't a slip-up, that was intentional.
3:38
Sean: And then she hears something, she has the covers over her, and she hears screams, and then when she wakes up in the morning, neither of them are there.
3:46
Sean: So that's when she hires the hitman, played by Mads Mikkelsen.
3:51
Hollie: Mads Mikkelsen, yes.
3:52
Hollie: I...
3:52
Sean: It's pronounced it's actually pronounced Mass, as I learned.
3:54
Sean: But he said he doesn't.
3:55
Sean: I read where he doesn't mind if English pronounce it with the...
3:59
Hollie: Well, he better not care because one of the things I know I do like him...
4:04
Sean: Oh I I love him.
4:04
Hollie: One of my favorite people to watch.
4:07
Hollie: He's just so cool, but I still don't always understand him.
4:11
Hollie: And you know, it's about time where his English needs to be a little bit clearer, and there is a running kind of almost like a joke throughout the film because he can't say something, he can't say her name.
4:23
Hollie: And they do it over and over again.
4:25
Hollie: And I'm like, Yeah, because I don't understand him some of the times.
4:28
Hollie: But I absolutely when you told me there was one of our favorite actors were in this, and then the first what 10 minutes you don't see anything, it almost looks animation too.
4:37
Hollie: And I'm like, what the hell are you making me watch this time?
4:40
Hollie: And then when he finally appears, I'm like, okay, now this is gonna be a cool movie because he just makes everything cool.
4:46
Sean: Yeah, I mean he yeah, like I said, when I when I read the premise and I saw he was in it, that was enough to sell me.
4:52
Hollie: Right.
4:52
Sean: Because I I will watch anything he's in.
4:54
Sean: I think I think he's he's fantastic, he's he's just got that certain presence on screen.
4:59
Sean: And yes, sometimes you're right.
5:00
Sean: I did, I I found it a little bit hard to understand him as well.
5:04
Sean: But then again, it makes sense as to why he did this film because when I I looked, and I'm glad I went into not knowing anything, and it was Bryan Fuller.
5:13
Sean: Now, Bryan Fuller was the creator of Hannibal.
5:16
Hollie: Was he a writer also on Hannibal?
5:18
Hollie: I think it was this is the first direction.
5:20
Sean: Yes, it was.
5:21
Sean: I mean, I think it's his first foray into film.
5:23
Hollie: Right, yes.
5:24
Sean: And that I mean, he's immensely talented.
5:26
Sean: I've always thought so.
5:27
Sean: Because you remember when we were when Hannibal was gonna come on.
5:30
Hollie: The TV show.
5:31
Sean: When...
5:31
Sean: TV show, right?
5:32
Sean: When Hannibal was gonna come on, I almost didn't want to watch it because, like, what else can you show me that they haven't I haven't already seen about Hannibal Lecter?
5:39
Hollie: Yeah, and I wasn't really excited about the main character, their choice for the actor, but which was that what's that guy's name?
5:48
Sean: Let me think about that one.
5:49
Sean: I I mean I know who you're talking about.
5:51
Hollie: He and Mads Mass Mikkelsen were also...
5:55
Sean: It's Hugh Dancy.
5:56
Hollie: Hugh Dancy. They were both in the first time I ever saw Mads in anything, which was King Arthur.
6:01
Hollie: They were both in King Arthur together.
6:03
Hollie: So I would which you probably didn't see with Clive Owen.
6:07
Sean: I did not see that one, no.
6:08
Sean: I mean...
6:09
Hollie: One of my favorite movies, because I like that King Arthur mythology.
6:12
Sean: So do I, and I think you know, and we'll talk about it at another point, which are my I have my favorite, nothing tops this King Arthur film, but we'll go into that uh later on.
6:20
Hollie: This King Arthur was real, was like a realistic version of it of King Arthur, like almost more of a historical type record.
6:27
Sean: Right.
6:28
Hollie: But the two of them were in it, so like we found out Hannibal was going to be Mikkelsen, and we're like, okay, that's interesting, that would be kind of cool, but I really wasn't sold on Hugh Dancy, but then having them both together, I really liked it.
6:41
Hollie: And then...
6:41
Sean: Well, he played he played Will Graham, so which is taking it back to before Silence of the Lambs, which you know, if you if you've seen if you've seen the movies, Manhunter is fantastic.
6:52
Hollie: Yes.
6:53
Sean: That has Will Graham in it.
6:54
Sean: Now, when they did the remake Red Dragon, that was awful.
6:57
Sean: But the Manhunter is the one to see.
6:59
Sean: But yeah, when I saw that Bryan Fuller was doing it, and because again, I didn't want to watch Hannibal, but we started watching it, and that that was an amazing show.
7:08
Sean: It was so artistic and it was so well done and riveting that, and you knew all this stuff, but yet you were still...
7:14
Hollie: It was very creative.
7:15
Sean: It was, and it got a little artsy in the last season, I will admit that.
7:18
Hollie: Yeah.
7:19
Sean: Sometimes a little bit too much so.
7:20
Hollie: Yeah.
7:20
Hollie: But...
7:21
Sean: But still it looked great.
7:22
Hollie: Yeah.
7:22
Hollie: And it was really uh being someone who read the books, like I read the Thomas Harris, right?
7:27
Hollie: Thomas Harris?
7:28
Sean: Thomas Harris, yeah, so did I.
7:29
Hollie: Yeah, I read the book, so I was like, okay, you know, I don't really care for this, but we watched it and it actually was really an interesting take on the character.
7:37
Sean: I would highly recommend going back and finding that wherever it's on, you know, wherever it's streaming.
7:42
Sean: I think let's see, it's uh it's on Prime, it's on Amazon Prime.
7:46
Sean: Um so if you have that, I don't know if you have to pay for it or not, but it's it's well worth it.
7:51
Hollie: I looked up Brian, I looked up Bryan Fuller right away because I'm like, who directed this odd movie?
7:57
Hollie: Like within the first few minutes before I even saw Mikkelsen in it, yet when it was just this weird setting, it was like animation, but not animation.
8:06
Hollie: It was definitely computer generite generated, but you could tell that she was a real actress and she wasn't computerized.
8:11
Hollie: It was very weird.
8:12
Hollie: So the first thing I did, I'm like, I gotta see who the hell directed this.
8:16
Hollie: And then so then I went that down that little rabbit hole and I could see, oh you know.
8:21
Sean: Yeah.
8:21
Sean: I mean, he did Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me...
8:24
Hollie: Which I really liked.
8:24
Hollie: Yeah,
8:25
Sean: ...he did some of the Star Trek series too, which I didn't know, and American Gods, which I've kind of wanted to watch.
8:30
Sean: I think that's on Amazon Prime as well.
8:32
Sean: And yeah, I like I said, he's immensely talented.
8:37
Sean: And I'm glad I came upon it because I again I had totally forgotten about it, because it wasn't promoted.
8:42
Hollie: No, not at all.
8:43
Sean: I think I was reading an article about him and his his issues in in Hollywood.
8:47
Sean: Like they had, I don't know, somebody had come out and said something about him, and they tons of people came to his defense.
8:53
Sean: So you know that's yeah, basically the the accusatory thing probably isn't correct because if all of his co-workers and staff, I mean, I'm not just talking about actors, but there were crew members and everything that came out on his behalf and you know defended him.
9:07
Sean: But that's yeah, obviously that's here nor there.
9:10
Sean: But yeah, he uh and I thought at first the movie was and it was for at the beginning and maybe the whole thing set in Chinatown.
9:16
Hollie: I did, I wrote that down too.
9:18
Hollie: Setting was it Chinatown?
9:19
Hollie: Was it China?
9:20
Hollie: Was it New York City?
9:21
Hollie: Was it it almost looked futuristic, kind of like like after a war, where a lot of the futuristic movies you see cultures kind of combine, and you see a lot of Asian culture in America, like almost like the Asian countries took over American culture, and they talk about that in the future a lot, where you see symbols in different languages and things.
9:43
Hollie: I felt like it was futuristic in a way, and I couldn't tell the setting at all.
9:49
Hollie: I couldn't tell the timeline, I couldn't figure out anything, but it's it's almost fantasy, like it's...
9:54
Sean: Right, it's fantasy as well.
9:55
Sean: Yeah, I mean that's it's like I said, it it you start to wonder, well, well, he thinks it's in her imagination.
10:02
Hollie: Right.
10:02
Sean: So he thinks it's someone that that killed her parents.
10:05
Sean: They were assassins that were meant for him that killed her parents, and she thinks it's the Dust Bunny under her bed.
10:12
Sean: Well, they're both right, as they you come to find out.
10:16
Sean: So it's yeah, that shouldn't deter you from watching it all.
10:19
Sean: It's I mean the movie's called Dust Bunny.
10:21
Sean: I mean, so you know it's...
10:23
Hollie: Yeah, there's something with the with the Dust Bunny.
10:25
Sean: Right.
10:25
Hollie: But for the longest time, you really didn't know if it really was there or if it was her imagination.
10:30
Hollie: But I did like how they went just just slightly into her history of that little girl because you did get an odd sense when her parents disappeared, we'll say, that she didn't have such a sentimentality to it.
10:45
Hollie: And you're like, why isn't she more upset?
10:47
Hollie: But then you find out as the movie progresses that that was her third, second or third foster family, because this keeps happening to her.
10:57
Hollie: Killed her real her birth parents, killed another foster.
11:01
Hollie: The these people keep disappearing, and she loses families.
11:04
Hollie: And so I I did think that was a nice, interesting take on her situation.
11:10
Hollie: So you kind of found out more about the girl, and she was my favorite character, she was just so cute.
11:15
Hollie: I really liked it.
11:16
Sean: Oh, absolutely.
11:17
Hollie: Sad. Very melancholy and sad, and you knew why.
11:20
Sean: Right, right.
11:21
Sean: I mean, you think about it, the monster under the bed is not a fresh idea.
11:24
Sean: The hitman is not a fresh idea.
11:27
Sean: The hitman with a child is not a fresh idea...
11:28
Hollie: No, they remind me of that movie...
11:29
Sean: The Professional.
11:30
Hollie: Yes.
11:30
Sean: Yeah, I thought about the professional a lot too.
11:32
Hollie: It did remind me a lot of The Professional, only more modern and more interesting and and better, to be honest.
11:38
Sean: Yeah, I mean, I love the profession.
11:39
Sean: I mean, you know, I think it's called that they call Leon : The Professional, but it is, I mean, I did love that movie a lot, but this is I think it's more our style because it's it combines a lot of different genres...
11:49
Hollie: Right?
11:50
Sean: And as I said it's very well acted.
11:52
Sean: I mean, there Sigourney Weaver's in it, which kind of was was a surprise.
11:57
Hollie: It was a very big surprise, and she she was the quintessent quintessential Sigourney Weaver, too.
12:04
Hollie: So cool, so uh aloof, is that the word?
12:07
Hollie: Like, she's so like doesn't really have a care, like she's very direct, she's very like this is the way it is.
12:14
Hollie: I did like her in it in it a lot, but I I like her in just about everything.
12:18
Hollie: So...
12:19
Sean: Same.
12:19
Sean: Now there were a couple a couple lines in there that I wonder if they threw in as references because in the restaurant she said something about dim sum...
12:26
Hollie: Yes.
12:27
Sean: ...and there was a line about dim sum in Working Girl...
12:29
Hollie: Oh, I...
12:30
Sean: ...and there was another one where the little girl says something about the monsters that come out at night, like mostly come out at night, which reminded me of Aliens, like they come out at night mostly.
12:38
Hollie: Oh, maybe yeah.
12:39
Sean: So I don't know if that was you know if that was maybe Fuller, right?
12:41
Sean: Like it's throwing that in for her and David, and forgive me if I pronounce his name, uh his last name wrong, Dastmalchian.
12:48
Hollie: Dashmalian.
12:49
Sean: I think I think it's Dastmalchian, as I looked at, but I don't know if that's pronounced correctly either.
12:53
Sean: He's he I he pops up in everything, but he's he's great.
12:56
Hollie: Yeah, he's a neat character actor.
12:57
Sean: Yeah, he really is.
12:58
Sean: I I really enjoy, you know, and I you didn't say you you said you looked ahead and saw who was in it, but you know, I didn't know because the credits at the beginning don't tell you who's in it.
13:06
Hollie: But I wanted to see who directed it, and when I did that, I found out who was in it.
13:11
Hollie: Like I said, I'm like when I first saw it, I'm like, um, this is a Tim Burton movie, nope, kind of a Wes Anderson movie, nope, but it wasn't.
13:18
Hollie: And it was just so weird that I I went down that as we were watching, which usually I try not to do, but this movie was so visually different than anything I'd seen.
13:29
Hollie: It kind of combined the special effects...
13:32
Hollie: in the the colorization too.
13:35
Hollie: Like if you've noticed, there was so much yellow in the film...
13:38
Sean: Yes.
13:39
Hollie: ...and I and I can't figure out why he chose to use all the yellow, like clothes were yellow, everything was odd, and and their wardrobes were very, very odd.
13:49
Hollie: And the elevator in the apartment building that they lived in because he was her neighbor, was like an old-time elevator, like something right out of a Wes Anderson movie.
13:59
Sean: Yeah, I did you you know what?
14:00
Sean: Yeah, you did mention Wes Anderson before, and you're right.
14:02
Sean: That that popped into my head too.
14:04
Sean: I'm like, God, it's really Wes Anderson, Wes Anderson-ish.
14:07
Hollie: I almost expected Ed Norton to pop up somewhere in it.
14:10
Sean: Yeah, or God, I can't think of his name.
14:13
Sean: Owen Wilson.
14:13
Hollie: Owen Wilson.
14:14
Sean: Yeah, somebody along those lines.
14:15
Sean: I thought here's one thing I'm gonna point out, and I don't know if you noticed this.
14:19
Sean: So at the very beginning of the film, when she, Aurora, she is following Mads Mikkelsen, the hitman.
14:26
Sean: I don't think he ever has a character name.
14:28
Sean: He's the concerned neighbor or Resident 5B, stuff like that...
14:32
Hollie: Yeah, I don't think you ever get his name.
14:32
Sean: ...so I don't think he really had a name.
14:34
Sean: Um, so she's following him.
14:35
Sean: And and well, one thing, I don't know if it was a nod to Pulp Fiction, I'm sorry, not uh Kill Bill, but he had a yellow tracksuit on.
14:41
Hollie: Yes, he did.
14:42
Hollie: And again, but also in the one movie with Wes Anderson, the the father and the two sons wore track suits...
14:50
Sean: Right.
14:51
Hollie: So you know, but yeah, he did have the yellow tracksuit, and he had did he have a sword or he had something that he used like a sword.
14:57
Sean: Yeah, it wasn't.
14:58
Sean: I don't think it was exactly a sword, but yeah...
15:01
Hollie: Yeah, those special effects were awesome.
15:03
Sean: They were...
15:04
Sean: so two things about that whole scene.
15:05
Sean: One, thank you, Bryan Fuller, because when she put that mask on, you saw eye holes for a second, and then you saw it as a normal shot, which it would be because when you're looking through a mask, you don't see eye holes...
15:18
Hollie: Right.
15:18
Hollie: It was...
15:18
Sean: ...but everybody done has done that for years, and I never really thought about it until somebody pointed it out.
15:22
Sean: I'm like, You're right, that is that is kind of stupid.
15:24
Hollie: Yeah, that was me.
15:25
Sean: You know, so it was like, yeah, she put it on and like the eye hole, but then you she just saw it as her normal vision.
15:30
Hollie: Right?
15:30
Hollie: I like that too.
15:31
Hollie: I caught that.
15:32
Sean: But that whole sequence with and they play a lot with shadows in that sequence, the dragon...
15:37
Hollie: Yes.
15:38
Sean: ...because it's set in Chinatown.
15:39
Sean: So the men that are uh you know coming after Mads Mikkelsen, they are all in this under the big dragon that they have for you know the parades and everything, the festivals.
15:48
Sean: But at some point she's seeing it and she sees it as a a shadow dragon...
15:54
Hollie: Right.
15:54
Sean: ...which is against the side of the building.
15:56
Sean: And I mean that it's such it's such a great scene, it's so well done.
16:00
Sean: You know, and that's just the beginning of the film.
16:02
Sean: So I mean you can imagine what happens at the towards the end.
16:05
Sean: There's another scene later on where a woman's grabbing for a doorknob, too, and but the shadow looks like this long claw type hand.
16:12
Sean: So he, I mean, God, he's just I can't even tell you like how great this movie is.
16:17
Hollie: Yeah, he did a lot with color, a lot with wardrobe, a lot with the shadows.
16:22
Hollie: And even when she was following him, if you notice, it didn't look like a real city, it almost looked like the city in Sin City when she was following him on the rooftops...
16:33
Sean: Yes.
16:34
Hollie: ...because she was up high and she was doing like acrobatic stuff that you're like, how does this little girl know what she's like flipping and rolling and going on top of rooftops?
16:43
Hollie: But then the scene with the dragon and when the he's ...those people are attacking him and he's fighting back, and the little girl's interpretation of what she sees as it being a monster is why she hires him because he can kill monsters because he killed the dragon, so she thinks he can kill the monster under her bed.
17:03
Hollie: That's that was neat.
17:04
Hollie: I I that was uh it's just a really good story, too.
17:07
Hollie: On top of all the visuals and the acting and all of that, it's a really sweet story between a hitman and the little girl, and and she finally finds someone to take care of...
17:19
Sean: Yeah, like a figure, uh parental figure.
17:21
Hollie: And I I the very end, I think was awesome.
17:24
Hollie: I think he nailed it at the very end.
17:26
Sean: I I agree, and there's a mid-credits scene too.
17:28
Sean: So you want to stick through the credits for a little bit.
17:30
Sean: I don't think there's an end credits, but there is that that mid.
17:33
Sean: So after you see the director and you know some of the you know actors, then it'll go back to the the scene.
17:39
Sean: My favorite line in the movie though is...
17:42
Hollie: Curious to see if it's mine.
17:43
Sean: It probably is.
17:44
Sean: So he says "The happiest I've ever been was believing in something impossible".
17:49
Sean: And she says, "Then you're gonna be very happy".
17:51
Hollie: Yeah, that was good.
17:52
Sean: Because he thinks you know, he he is under the impression that she it's her imagination.
17:57
Hollie: But she knows it's true.
17:59
Sean: Right.
17:59
Sean: And she knows it's true.
18:00
Hollie: She keeps trying to tell people, no, this is true.
18:03
Sean: Yes, and so go ahead.
18:06
Sean: What was your I thought it might be a different line.
18:08
Hollie: No, my favorite line, and it like I said, it happened multiple times, is and it I think it's kind of a nod to his accent in a way, too, because her name was Aurora, which is a hard name to say anyway, but she would say her name and he would say back and she would say it again, like they would go back and forth.
18:25
Hollie: And then the last time they did it, she said Aurora and he went Aurora, and she goes, No, Aurora, and he did it again, and then she finally and said it, and then he goes, That's what I said, and I just loved that back and forth with them.
18:38
Hollie: And and their the way...
18:40
Sean: They had great chemistry.
18:41
Hollie: ...yeah, and the way they went back and forth with this, you know, adult man who doesn't even know this little girl, you know, they live next door to each other, it's not like they were friends and she saw them in the you know, it was just really neat when he goes, That's what I said, and he puts this little cheeky smile, and it just showed that connection right there between them, you know.
19:00
Hollie: That...
19:00
Sean: Yes.
19:01
Hollie: I really that was my favorite part.
19:03
Sean: Yeah, I mean, I thought uh during the whole thing it was almost like a children's book come to life, like it was very whimsical, but also graphic.
19:10
Hollie: Where the Wild Things Are.
19:11
Sean: That's yeah, that's another thing I thought about too.
19:14
Hollie: It kind of reminded me of that too.
19:14
Sean: Yeah, those kind of uh the books...
19:15
Hollie: But it's not a children's movie.
19:17
Sean: It is no, it's not a children's movie at all.
19:18
Sean: Well, I mean, depending on what you let your children watch, you know.
19:21
Sean: I I probably would have watched that when I was a kid.
19:24
Hollie: And you I was always expecting to see blood and gore, but you never did...
19:28
Sean: No.
19:28
Hollie: Which was really cool.
19:29
Hollie: I mean, you knew people were dying and being killed and sometimes painfully, but you never saw the gore, which I thought was really...
19:36
Sean: Right.
19:37
Hollie: It was...
19:37
Sean: A lot of stuff is off camera.
19:39
Hollie: Yes, off camera, and you just heard it.
19:41
Sean: Right.
19:41
Sean: Right.
19:42
Sean: Yeah, so yeah, like I said, I was I was very impressed with that film.
19:46
Sean: I'm glad I I remembered it.
19:48
Sean: Yeah, I remember the the name of it when I went by, you know, just looking for something on on HBO, it's currently on HBO Max.
19:54
Sean: I do know that because that's that's where we found it.
19:56
Hollie: Yeah, and I already recommended it to a friend of ours.
19:59
Sean: Good, good, yeah.
20:00
Sean: Like I said, uh you know, we don't want to really talk about it because again, when you mentioned that, you know, after when the movie finished, you said, well, that was weird or something like that.
20:10
Sean: And I go, no, no, no, don't talk about it now.
20:12
Sean: We'll talk about it on the podcast because I think this would be it'd be a good one.
20:16
Hollie: Right.
20:16
Sean: And I want to draw attention to it because it's it's so phenomenal.
20:18
Hollie: Right.
20:18
Hollie: And and I'm not gonna spoil the very end, but the very end is almost like a happily ever after type thing, and it it was just so cute.
20:27
Sean: In a way, right.
20:28
Hollie: It was just really made the movie the dark comedy part is second to the to me, to the action and that part.
20:38
Sean: Right, the fan the fantasy.
20:39
Hollie: Yeah, but there is a huge there is some very good dark comedy in it.
20:43
Sean: Oh, absolutely, yeah, absolutely.
20:44
Sean: There is, and like I said, every every one of them delivers their lines perfectly.
20:48
Sean: I mean, it's almost like if you think about it, it it is kind of like a Beetlejuice...
20:52
Hollie: Yes.
20:53
Sean: ...in a way.
20:53
Sean: With that with that, what I mean, in terms of that kind of horror, in a way.
20:56
Sean: Now, the action is more probably what got it the R rating.
21:00
Hollie: Yes, because he does the very it, it was very quick and like our acrobatic action, too.
21:06
Sean: Right.
21:06
Hollie: Like it wasn't like just people shooting each other, it was very acrobatic and very f very dance-like and and very...
21:14
Sean: Like a choreographed well...
21:15
Hollie: Yes very choreographed, very creative, and I I did it, I liked it a lot.
21:19
Hollie: Like John Wick, like without the blood.
21:21
Sean: Right.
21:22
Sean: And yeah, from like a child's perspective in a way.
21:24
Hollie: Yeah, very much from her perspective, a lot of the movie.
21:27
Sean: Well, good, good.
21:28
Sean: I'm glad you liked it because I was a little worried about that.
21:29
Sean: I'm thinking, like, what if she didn't?
21:31
Sean: Because I loved it.
21:32
Sean: Yeah, like my first thought was like, you know what?
21:34
Sean: I honestly it's kind of funny because I've had to make the podcast explicit because if you let any swear word in, they said they can kind of, you know, they may ban you from any one of the platforms.
21:43
Sean: Not ban you, but they'll flag it.
21:44
Sean: Yeah, which is weird.
21:45
Sean: So I fucking loved it.
21:47
Hollie: You know what?
21:48
Hollie: All the podcasts I listen to, they swear all the time.
21:50
Sean: And that's what I'm saying, but you have to flag it as explicit.
21:53
Sean: I'm like, Well, we're not talking about yeah, we're not wearing robes and you know, like it's I mean, it's just odd.
21:59
Sean: So but like so I've had to do that.
22:00
Sean: So I'm like, no, I'm like feel free to say fuck.
22:02
Hollie: Yeah.
22:02
Hollie: And and and if you're a fan of Mads Mikkelsen, which every person who likes movies should be, I definitely this is one of my top things I've ever seen with him.
22:13
Sean: Yes.
22:14
Hollie: He was just in he came off like a hitman.
22:17
Hollie: And you know, we're in this hit man phase, I guess, right now too.
22:20
Hollie: ..came off, but he came off very likable, almost like the Grosse Pointe Blank hitman.
22:25
Sean: Yes.
22:25
Hollie: He was a hitman you really liked, and you he was sweet and he was funny and he...
22:30
Sean: He was a little like...
22:31
Hollie: ...yeah...
22:31
Sean: ...churlish at first.
22:32
Sean: You know, he was very curt because obviously he didn't want to trust, you know, believe the little girl, and you know...
22:37
Hollie: ...and he didn't want her around him because he thought people were getting killed around the area in that apartment building because of him.
22:44
Hollie: So he didn't want the little girl around him because he didn't want anything to happen to her, which was very sweet.
22:48
Sean: Right, it was.
22:49
Hollie: It was just...
22:50
Sean: Very protective.
22:50
Hollie: Yes.
22:51
Sean: And it it seemed like it kind of alluded to the fact that he didn't have that upbringing either...
22:54
Hollie: Right, well...
22:55
Sean: ...so not a great, not a great upbringing...
22:57
Hollie: And you do kind of find out...
22:58
Sean: Right.
22:58
Sean: You do, yes, and you do kind of find out why.
23:00
Sean: So, and like I said, they don't beat you over the head with stuff like that.
23:02
Hollie: No.
23:03
Sean: It's very subtle.
23:04
Sean: Like I said, this is this is definitely a winner, you know.
23:06
Sean: Fuller wrote and directed it.
23:08
Sean: I I hope he does a lot more, uh
23:10
Hollie: Yeah, I I would love to see more movies like this.
23:13
Sean: Yes.
23:13
Hollie: Like I think...
23:14
Sean: It's it it feels like it like it hasn't been done before in a way.
23:17
Sean: But like I said, yes, it has all the elements have, but in this way it has not been.
23:21
Hollie: And I think too, you get tired of movies who are, and and you know, I complain about this all the time, artsy just to be artsy, you know, like like just to have those creativity and the the weird colors and do all that stuff computerized...just to do that.
23:36
Hollie: This movie had a story to go with the creation...
23:41
Sean: There was a reason for it...
23:41
Hollie: ...and the visuals...
23:42
Sean: Yes.
23:42
Hollie: ...and that I really liked because sometimes you only get one, and this time you got both.
23:45
Hollie: You got the really cool story, great visuals, really cool music, too, in the background.
23:51
Hollie: I noticed it wasn't really I wouldn't call it a soundtrack, but there was some really interesting music, and it it wasn't and the music also didn't help you pick a setting.
24:00
Sean: No, no, yeah, it was like that, and that was I think that works to the film's advantage because...
24:04
Hollie: I agree.
24:05
Sean: There's it's it's almost timeless now, you know.
24:07
Sean: It can be anytime, anyplace.
24:09
Sean: And that's why you think, like, well, maybe it's all in her imagination.
24:12
Hollie: That's what I thought.
24:12
Sean: But I don't think so.
24:13
Hollie: I thought the beginning was in her imagination until until we get to about mid-movie, then I figured it was no longer in her imagination that all this was happening.
24:21
Sean: Yeah, I mean, that's the impression I got too.
24:23
Sean: It was it was real.
24:24
Sean: All right.
24:24
Sean: Well, is there anything else you'd like to talk about about the film?
24:27
Hollie: No, but if Mads Mikkelsen ever hears this podcast, I'd like to say I'm a big fan.
24:33
Sean: Yes, and Bryan Fuller, actually, everybody, everybody who was involved, a huge fan.
24:37
Hollie: And I would like to see him do more movies.
24:40
Sean: Yes, yes, absolutely.
24:42
Hollie: The movie's awesome.
24:42
Sean: All right, well, thank you again.
24:44
Sean: We will come up with something again soon.
24:46
Sean: We might even go, we're probably not maybe something, maybe from the past.
24:49
Sean: I actually have one I want you to watch from the 60s, so that I don't think you've ever seen.
24:54
Hollie: Oh no.
24:54
Sean: So maybe we'll um...
24:55
Hollie: Oh no.
24:56
Sean: Oh yesss.
24:57
Sean: I think you'll enjoy it.
24:58
Sean: And I have not seen it since college, so it's been about 40 years since I've seen it, but I really enjoyed it.
25:02
Hollie: You're not that oh my god, did I marry someone that's...
25:05
Sean: You did, I, I'm...
25:05
Hollie: ...been out of college 40 years.
25:07
Sean: Um yeah, I know.
25:08
Sean: Well, that's not what it is, yeah.
25:09
Sean: 35 since I I graduated, but it was about almost 40 since I saw the film.
25:15
Sean: So all right.
25:17
Sean: Well, again, thank you, and I look forward to what we're doing next.
25:21
Hollie: Me too...
25:21
Hollie: uh talking and movies.
25:23
Hollie: There's what two best things I could do with my time.
25:25
Hollie: I'm I'm here for you.
25:27
Sean: All right! That wraps up another episode.
