- 0:01Speaker 1: On Friday, June twenty first, twenty fourteen, twenty six year
- 0:05Speaker 1: old Diana Duvay went missing. Diana's last message to her
- 0:10Speaker 1: mother early that morning stated only that she would not
- 0:13Speaker 1: be returning home. Then there was silence. Investigators tracked clues
- 0:19Speaker 1: left behind from her last night out, friends and witnesses
- 0:22Speaker 1: who helped piece together a timeline and point them towards
- 0:26Speaker 1: a suspect. Days later, Diana's car was discovered abandoned in
- 0:30Speaker 1: a store parking lot an hour from her home, and
- 0:34Speaker 1: yet more devastating discoveries were still to be made. Hi there,

- 2:45Speaker 1: as well as PC. Lena Andrews arrived at the Via
- 2:51Speaker 1: Beach Police station at just after eight am on June
- 2:54Speaker 1: twenty first, twenty fourteen. She was there to report her daughter,
- 2:58Speaker 1: twenty six year old to Diana Duvet missing. The last
- 3:02Speaker 1: communication she had with Diana was a text message sent
- 3:05Speaker 1: just past one thirty a m. The previous day, stating
- 3:08Speaker 1: that she would not be returning home that night. That
- 3:11Speaker 1: message was sent in her native Russian, the language Diana
- 3:14Speaker 1: used to communicate with her mother. Every message Lena sent
- 3:18Speaker 1: following that, asking where she was and when she would
- 3:21Speaker 1: be home, went unanswered. Eventually, Lena made contact with Diana's boyfriend,
- 3:28Speaker 1: thirty one year old Mike Jones. Mike told Lena that
- 3:32Speaker 1: Diana was sleeping at his house he would have her
- 3:35Speaker 1: call later, but no call was ever made. Even more troubling,
- 3:41Speaker 1: following this exchange with Lena, Mike Jones also dropped out
- 3:45Speaker 1: of contact. Beginning that Saturday, June twenty second, no one
- 3:50Speaker 1: could reach the young couple, and neither Diana, a dedicated nurse,
- 3:55Speaker 1: or Mike, a successful wealth planner, had shown up for
- 3:58Speaker 1: work on Friday, thirty one year old Mike Jones had
- 4:07Speaker 1: earned a Masters in Law degree from the University of Miami.
- 4:11Speaker 1: After launching his career at the investment bank Merrill Lynch
- 4:14Speaker 1: based in Fort Lauderdale, he had accepted a role at
- 4:17Speaker 1: PNC Wealth Management in Vero Beach. Mike oversaw millions of
- 4:22Speaker 1: client funds, and by most accounts, he was respected and
- 4:26Speaker 1: well liked by colleagues and clients alike, a regular on
- 4:31Speaker 1: the local bar scene. It was at one of these
- 4:33Speaker 1: establishments that Mike had met Diana roughly six months earlier.
- 4:39Speaker 1: By the spring of twenty fourteen, they were living together
- 4:43Speaker 1: in Mike's residence at sixteen twenty forty two square. According
- 4:47Speaker 1: to friends, Diana was never as smitten with Mike as
- 4:51Speaker 1: he was with her. The twenty six year old has
- 4:54Speaker 1: always been popular and made friends easily. It had taken
- 4:57Speaker 1: some effort from Mike to win her af over. Born
- 5:03Speaker 1: in Moldova, Diana had moved to Florida with her mother
- 5:07Speaker 1: at the age of thirteen when Lena married stepfather Bill Andrews.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Arriving as a young teen without a word of English,
- 5:15Speaker 1: she had learned rapidly and fit in just as quickly
- 5:19Speaker 1: Diana graduated college with a nursing degree with a specialization
- 5:22Speaker 1: in oncology. She worked with cancer patients at a local
- 5:26Speaker 1: medical clinic, a role in which she was deeply committed.
- 5:30Speaker 1: That Friday, however, she did not show up for work,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and no one at the clinic had heard from her.
- 5:40Speaker 1: A search warrant was drawn up for Mike Jones's house
- 5:43Speaker 1: in Vero Beach. It was the last known location for
- 5:46Speaker 1: both Mike and Diana. When they entered, they found no
- 5:49Speaker 1: one at home. It also seems that not much appeared
- 5:53Speaker 1: out of place. Neither Diana's black Nissan nor Mike's gold
- 5:57Speaker 1: Maasda was at the residence, though a neighbor told police
- 6:01Speaker 1: they were called seeing Diana's vehicle parked out front on
- 6:04Speaker 1: Friday night. In the garage, on the floor near the
- 6:08Speaker 1: base of the door, investigators identified droplets of a blood
- 6:12Speaker 1: like substance. The need to locate the couple intensified. Notifications
- 6:18Speaker 1: to law enforcement agencies across the state were made in
- 6:21Speaker 1: an effort to find Mike and Diana's vehicles and hopefully
- 6:24Speaker 1: lead to their location. Meanwhile, detectives began to retrace their
- 6:29Speaker 1: movements prior to those early morning texts on the twenty first.
- 6:36Speaker 1: On the evening of Wednesday, June eighteenth, two days before
- 6:39Speaker 1: the disappearance, Diana and Mike went to the Scampy Grill
- 6:43Speaker 1: for dinner. Michael Major had been their server. Michael recognized
- 6:47Speaker 1: the couple as soon as they came in. He and
- 6:50Speaker 1: a co worker had been out for drinks just a
- 6:52Speaker 1: few days before at a bark Halt the Grove where
- 6:55Speaker 1: they had encountered Mike and Diana.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Able to introduce myself. They seemed a little on edge.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Did you know him at that time?
- 7:06Speaker 4: You know, we had seen him actually, one of the
- 7:09Speaker 4: employees here, Kevin and I had encountered him.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Who are you talking about, Michael?
- 7:18Speaker 2: Okay, talking about Michael Jones. Yes, sir.
- 7:22Speaker 6: We were at the grove having a couple of beverages
- 7:24Speaker 6: after work, and Kevin made contact with the girlfriend at
- 7:30Speaker 6: the time.
- 7:31Speaker 3: And just casual conversation, and he came.
- 7:33Speaker 6: Up with attitude and stuff, and we were already a
- 7:35Speaker 6: few drinks into the night.
- 7:36Speaker 2: We're like, you know, it's startish, we're on a long day.
- 7:38Speaker 7: Let's just leave it at that and golf.
- 7:41Speaker 2: So we did.
- 7:41Speaker 6: We left it at that and went on. So when
- 7:43Speaker 6: they came in Wednesday night. Kevin was working with me
- 7:46Speaker 6: and he goes, that guy looked.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Familiar to you.
- 7:48Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, he does.
- 7:49Speaker 6: He goes, that's the guy from the grove that tried
- 7:51Speaker 6: to get into.
- 7:52Speaker 2: It with me.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Michael told the detective that a short exchange Kevin had
- 7:56Speaker 1: with Diana at the grove caused a jealous reaction from Mike,
- 8:00Speaker 1: who unnecessarily confronted them in a threatening manner. The servers
- 8:04Speaker 1: de escalated the exchange and left, only to see the
- 8:07Speaker 1: couple show up at the Scampy Grill days later. Their
- 8:11Speaker 1: demeanor was tense. Michael noted how they seemed to maintain
- 8:15Speaker 1: a heated exchange throughout their dinner, though keeping their voices
- 8:18Speaker 1: low enough to conceal their words.
- 8:20Speaker 2: You could visibly see that something was going on with her.
- 8:23Speaker 2: The demeanor didn't change at all.
- 8:25Speaker 6: And I looked through service window at the table they
- 8:28Speaker 6: were so often miss a check on them, and you
- 8:30Speaker 6: could see that there was agitation between the two of them.
- 8:34Speaker 6: I was talking to Kevin about it too, him, I
- 8:35Speaker 6: do that is not a happy table.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I'm like, there's a lot of agitation going.
- 8:38Speaker 1: On, and he noticed it too.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Would you say that He's aggressive with her all the
- 8:43Speaker 2: way he was talking to her.
- 8:44Speaker 6: Absolutely, his body motion was absolutely aggressive.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Mike and Diana left scampy Grill at around eight thirty
- 8:52Speaker 1: that evening. An hour later, Mike was back at the Grove.
- 8:57Speaker 1: He was alone. A friend who saw him there later
- 9:00Speaker 1: told detectives that Mike was visibly upset and had been crying.
- 9:06Speaker 8: I saw Mike jone on Wednesday, and he was sitting
- 9:11Speaker 8: by himself. He was texting on.
- 9:13Speaker 1: His phone, and then he left shortly thereafter.
- 9:16Speaker 3: But I just thought it was really the.
- 9:18Speaker 9: Zar behavior for hend to be.
- 9:21Speaker 5: Thought that in public.
- 9:22Speaker 10: I got the compression that he'd been.
- 9:24Speaker 9: Given like some really bad dues.
- 9:28Speaker 1: By all accounts, Diana and Mike had ended their relationship
- 9:31Speaker 1: over dinner at Scampy's Grill on Wednesday night. Mike complained
- 9:35Speaker 1: to coworkers the following day that Diana had left without
- 9:38Speaker 1: removing all of her clothing from his apartment. He also
- 9:42Speaker 1: told them that he had plans to visit friends in Orlando,
- 9:45Speaker 1: which served as an explanation for his absence, but he
- 9:49Speaker 1: did not leave right away. Despite their apparent breakup, he
- 9:53Speaker 1: and Diana were spotted out together once more the very
- 9:56Speaker 1: next night. A bartender at What a Time reported that
- 10:01Speaker 1: after having a drink, Mike paid their tab by credit card,
- 10:04Speaker 1: and the two left together at just after one am.
- 10:09Speaker 1: It was the last sighting of Diana before she lost
- 10:12Speaker 1: contact with everyone, and she was getting into her car
- 10:16Speaker 1: with her now ex boyfriend. This was not the first
- 10:21Speaker 1: time that the two had parted ways. Diana's best friend
- 10:25Speaker 1: and sometimes roommate, Chelsea, told detectives that their first split
- 10:29Speaker 1: had taken place back in April, during a heated argument
- 10:32Speaker 1: at their home. Mike's yelling and threats caused a neighbor
- 10:36Speaker 1: in the building to place a call to nine point one,
- 10:39Speaker 1: concerned for Diana's safety.
- 10:42Speaker 11: She called me a starting and crying.
- 10:44Speaker 12: She asked me where it was, and they said I
- 10:45Speaker 12: was working.
- 10:46Speaker 13: I'm still at the bar closing up.
- 10:47Speaker 5: She's like, okay, I'm coming up there.
- 10:49Speaker 11: When she came up, hysterical talking about how they were
- 10:52Speaker 11: in a fight and at one point during the fight
- 10:55Speaker 11: he ended up choking her.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Chelsea said she could clearly see the signs of the
- 10:59Speaker 1: attack on her friend's neck. They had documented the incident
- 11:03Speaker 1: with photos. The next day, accompanied by Chelsea's father, they
- 11:07Speaker 1: went to Mike's apartment and collected her things. She moved out,
- 11:11Speaker 1: and that was meant to be the end of it.
- 11:14Speaker 11: They went through a period of time of not really
- 11:18Speaker 11: talking or speaking, and then I guess over time they
- 11:22Speaker 11: ended up back together and everything seemed fine.
- 11:25Speaker 3: That night was cut everybody off.
- 11:28Speaker 13: Their no and saw that one happen.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Though Mike's temper on that night back in April had
- 11:34Speaker 1: come as a surprise to many of Diana's friends, it
- 11:37Speaker 1: seems it was not out of character. Mike was described
- 11:41Speaker 1: as a controlling and jealous partner and a man with
- 11:44Speaker 1: a bad temper. Diana's friend Kyle told detectives that he
- 11:48Speaker 1: tried to warn her off of Mike, sensing that he
- 11:51Speaker 1: was not a good person. On one occasion, they ran
- 11:55Speaker 1: into each other at a bar and greeted each other
- 11:57Speaker 1: with a hug. Spotting the exchange, Mike wasted no time
- 12:01Speaker 1: confronting Kyle in what he described as a jealous rage.
- 12:05Speaker 1: It was behavior reminiscent of what Michael and Kevin had
- 12:09Speaker 1: experienced only days before the disappearance, and.
- 12:13Speaker 2: He pursued again with aggression, more aggression, to try to.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Fight, You fight, what exactly say to you?
- 12:20Speaker 2: Go didn't really say? Nothing, just stared at me and
- 12:24Speaker 2: started walking towards me, like with anger. Did he have
- 12:27Speaker 2: his finches, yes, fists were clenched. He was ready to fight.
- 12:33Speaker 2: He has a rage and jealousy, not much. I believe
- 12:37Speaker 2: you know it was it was a while back, but
- 12:38Speaker 2: I believe he said get that fuck off her and
- 12:42Speaker 2: it was a simple hug as a friend.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Okay.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Would you say he's got some jealousy issues.
- 12:47Speaker 9: Yes.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Further digging into Mike Jones's past revealed a criminal history,
- 12:53Speaker 1: a conviction in Fort Lauderdale for aggravated stalking of an
- 12:57Speaker 1: ex girlfriend, a felony. On Sunday, June twenty second, only
- 13:05Speaker 1: days after Diana's last confirmed communication, Mike Jones's gold Masta
- 13:10Speaker 1: was spotted in the parking lot of a Hampton Inn
- 13:13Speaker 1: on Reynolds Drive in Fort Pierce. Despite his apparent plans
- 13:17Speaker 1: to visit friends in Orlando. Surveillance footage captured him checking
- 13:21Speaker 1: into a room only twenty five minutes away from his
- 13:24Speaker 1: home in Vero Beach. He paid cash and gave explicit
- 13:28Speaker 1: instructions to hotel staff do not put through any phone
- 13:32Speaker 1: calls and do not tell anyone that he was there.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Detectives were nonetheless handed a key card to his room
- 13:40Speaker 1: and they paid him a visit.
- 13:42Speaker 13: He had a pretty good reason why we're here.
- 13:44Speaker 14: I'm sure you know.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Basically you know the.
- 13:46Speaker 13: Reason why we're here. I'm still trying to find it out. Okay,
- 13:51Speaker 13: that's the biggest reason why we've been doing the last
- 13:52Speaker 13: couple of days. That's what we're going to continue to do. Okay,
- 13:57Speaker 13: I'd like to talk to you about her whereabouts. Okay,
- 14:01Speaker 13: but after read you Moranda. Warning first, Okay, you understand
- 14:06Speaker 13: that so far. I know you got a little of
- 14:07Speaker 13: your lot. You so you're really intelligent.
- 14:10Speaker 15: Remember again, while we're here, and that's to find find her.
- 14:13Speaker 14: I'll tell you unquickly, I don't know her seats. If
- 14:15Speaker 14: you are wait my right, I'll tell you I don't know.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Just Following this brief statement, Mike asserted his right to counsel,
- 14:25Speaker 1: and the conversation ended. Less than twelve hours after Mike's
- 14:31Speaker 1: Masda was spotted in Fort Pierce, Diana's black Nissan was
- 14:36Speaker 1: located in a public's parking lot in Melbourne, a nearly
- 14:39Speaker 1: hour drive from her home in Vero Beach. Officers opened
- 14:43Speaker 1: the trunk of the car to find Diana duvet dressed
- 14:47Speaker 1: in only her underwear. She had likely been deceased for days.
- 14:53Speaker 1: An autopsy would later determine that Diana had suffered blunt
- 14:56Speaker 1: force trauma to her head. She had also been strangled.
- 15:01Speaker 1: It was a devastating outcome to the missing person search
- 15:04Speaker 1: that family and friends had desperately hoped would result in
- 15:07Speaker 1: locating Diana alive.
- 15:10Speaker 10: Anybody they got a chance to meet Diana knows that
- 15:13Speaker 10: she just brought a smile to their face and was
- 15:16Speaker 10: a bright spot in their life. You get to know
- 15:18Speaker 10: who people are, and she's one of those people that
- 15:22Speaker 10: you won't find anybody that has anything bad to say
- 15:24Speaker 10: about her. You could see from the outreach from the
- 15:26Speaker 10: community that just speaks volume of volumes of who she was.
- 15:30Speaker 10: It's devastating loss.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Detectives spoke with a public's employee who had arrived for
- 15:35Speaker 1: her shift just before five am on Saturday morning. The
- 15:39Speaker 1: employee recalled watching as the black Nissan drove in and parked.
- 15:44Speaker 1: She did, not, however, get a clear view of the driver.
- 15:47Speaker 5: So I said, well, I seen whom the partsull that
- 15:49Speaker 5: holts it in my car and the baker man. She said,
- 15:53Speaker 5: what you seen the cars full off, which day, and
- 15:55Speaker 5: I was like, so sat either Saturday or Friday with
- 15:57Speaker 5: like four forty five in the.
- 15:58Speaker 10: Morning, so that he.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Did you see who was driving the black vehicle.
- 16:05Speaker 1: The employee thought that perhaps a second vehicle which entered
- 16:09Speaker 1: the lot only moments later, could have been traveling with
- 16:12Speaker 1: the black Nissan. If so, it would suggest the killer
- 16:16Speaker 1: had an accomplice, though the witness did not see an
- 16:19Speaker 1: interaction between the drivers, so investigators began to contact local
- 16:24Speaker 1: taxi services. They reasoned that the driver who abandoned Diana's
- 16:28Speaker 1: car needed to leave the parking lot. Somehow, this logical
- 16:32Speaker 1: deduction proved accurate. A black Diamond taxi reported collecting a
- 16:37Speaker 1: fair a quarter mile from the publics from the local
- 16:40Speaker 1: Wendy's restaurant at roughly eight thirty am on Saturday morning.
- 16:44Speaker 1: The destination was Vero Beach. The driver told detectives that
- 16:49Speaker 1: he collected a thin built white man and a red
- 16:52Speaker 1: hoodie from the bus stop. He remembered it clearly because
- 16:55Speaker 1: it was the only fair he had that day, and
- 16:58Speaker 1: it was unusual to collect someone from the side of
- 17:00Speaker 1: the road for a long journey. They made small talk
- 17:03Speaker 1: on the way, how did you.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Get down here?
- 17:07Speaker 12: And they said, well, he came down. He came down
- 17:10Speaker 12: with a front of his and he's her card wrote
- 17:16Speaker 12: now okay, and he had no way to get back,
- 17:23Speaker 12: so she's going to get a car fix. And they
- 17:25Speaker 12: said said, oh, I don't know. Yeah, she was pretty
- 17:27Speaker 12: pissed anyways, so I doubt you will gave me a
- 17:30Speaker 12: ride back.
- 17:32Speaker 1: The taxi driver dropped off the man in the hoodie
- 17:34Speaker 1: at an address in Vero Beach, directly across the street
- 17:38Speaker 1: from the apartment at sixteen twenty forty two Square. When
- 17:42Speaker 1: as to identify the man in a police lineup, the
- 17:45Speaker 1: driver identified Michael Jones. On Wednesday, June twenty fifth, one
- 17:54Speaker 1: week from the day Diana broke up with him, Michael
- 17:57Speaker 1: Jones was formally charged with first two murder. He was
- 18:01Speaker 1: held in custody without bond.
- 18:03Speaker 15: This is a tragic case of dating and domestic violence
- 18:07Speaker 15: by a weak, insecure, cowardly individual who felt the need
- 18:11Speaker 15: to control his relationship with Diana Duvey by way of
- 18:15Speaker 15: verbal and physical abuse. Quite frankly, Michael David Jones discussed
- 18:20Speaker 15: me and his very poor excuse for a man.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Upon his arrest, officers located a second burner phone amongst
- 18:28Speaker 1: his things, the same phone that had been used to
- 18:31Speaker 1: call the taxicab company for a ride from the Melbourne Wendy's.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Had he used this phone exclusively instead of occasionally powering
- 18:39Speaker 1: on his regular device, detectives may have been unable to
- 18:42Speaker 1: track him. As it was, they could trace the purchase
- 18:45Speaker 1: of the burner phone to a Walmart in Pombay at
- 18:49Speaker 1: approximately six fifty two am on Saturday the twenty first,
- 18:53Speaker 1: a black four door Nissan was captured arriving at the store.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Cameras in the parking lot and inside showed only Mike
- 19:01Speaker 1: Jones emerging from the vehicle and entering the store. He
- 19:04Speaker 1: purchased the flip phone and was captured to leaving. Though
- 19:08Speaker 1: he drove Diana's car, she was not seen with him.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Of course, if the timeline established by detectives was correct,
- 19:16Speaker 1: Diana was already in the trunk when Mike drove her
- 19:20Speaker 1: car to the Walmart that morning. Michael Jones pleaded not
- 19:28Speaker 1: guilty to the murder and awaited his trial from County jail.
- 19:32Speaker 1: He refused to speak with detectives.
- 19:36Speaker 9: I want to point out to you the first time
- 19:37Speaker 9: I talked to you, we were there to talk to
- 19:39Speaker 9: you about a missing person. Okay, now we're here to
- 19:42Speaker 9: talk to you about the murder. Okay, that being said,
- 19:46Speaker 9: how might I go ahead and read you Maranaes you understand?
- 19:49Speaker 7: Yeah, using my right to silence and unquotically rest of
- 19:55Speaker 7: my right to cancel, so you don't want to talk
- 19:57Speaker 7: to us, I requested my right to cancel. Okay, That's
- 20:04Speaker 7: all I had to say to us.
- 20:07Speaker 1: During this period, investigators were learning more about the wealth
- 20:10Speaker 1: Planners sorted past ex girlfriends, reported controlling behavior and a
- 20:15Speaker 1: pattern of emotional and physical abuse. It also emerged that
- 20:20Speaker 1: Mike had a history of telling grandiose overt lies. Though
- 20:25Speaker 1: he drove a ten year old Mazda, he claimed this
- 20:28Speaker 1: was only to keep his other car, a Porsche, from
- 20:30Speaker 1: becoming damaged. He also spoke about the penthouse he claimed
- 20:34Speaker 1: to own in Fort Lauderdale. While in law school, He
- 20:38Speaker 1: told professors and some fellow students that he was battling cancer,
- 20:43Speaker 1: which made it difficult for him to regularly attend classes
- 20:46Speaker 1: and meet project deadlines. And apparently he was also a
- 20:51Speaker 1: self made man. He claimed to have been adopted and
- 20:55Speaker 1: raised in poverty. These lies helped him get admitted to
- 20:58Speaker 1: academic programs and boost his reputation with colleagues, but his
- 21:04Speaker 1: tales were a stark contrast to the wealthy upbringing and
- 21:08Speaker 1: private school education that his biological parents had actually provided him.
- 21:14Speaker 1: After his arrest, his many connections abandoned him. His lawes
- 21:19Speaker 1: had been revealed. While awaiting trial, Mike was supported by
- 21:23Speaker 1: a single coworker who visited him only a few times.
- 21:29Speaker 16: Okay, I ask you an honest question. Sure, other than
- 21:33Speaker 16: you and her, do you think I really have any
- 21:37Speaker 16: friends left?
- 21:40Speaker 14: Don't consider that they're not your friends. They're just not
- 21:43Speaker 14: in a good place, you know, And I hope they
- 21:47Speaker 14: still are your friends, you know. Okay, have you seen
- 21:51Speaker 14: your family at all? Michael?
- 21:54Speaker 16: Now you're the only person that has it is to me,
- 21:58Speaker 16: and literally I got one letter from guy and one
- 22:00Speaker 16: letter from you, and method.
- 22:02Speaker 14: Do you want me to contact your family?
- 22:05Speaker 16: No, my attorney talk to them.
- 22:07Speaker 14: The police detective has said to me that I've tried
- 22:11Speaker 14: to talk with you and that you won't talk with them.
- 22:16Speaker 14: And I guess I'm I don't care for It's not
- 22:22Speaker 14: what I want to know why you won't talk to them.
- 22:25Speaker 14: I want the best for you, Michael, and I'm just
- 22:30Speaker 14: wondering why you think it's beneficial to you not to
- 22:35Speaker 14: talk to them.
- 22:38Speaker 16: Yeah, that's something I can't talk about.
- 22:41Speaker 14: You know, Michael. They don't tell us details and stuff.
- 22:44Speaker 14: But and this is upset for you, I'm sure. But
- 22:48Speaker 14: they tell us that they have lots of evidence. If
- 22:53Speaker 14: you don't weigh in at all, that your voice is
- 22:58Speaker 14: not going to be heard, Michael. And the next thing,
- 23:01Speaker 14: you know, will be in the middle of some big
- 23:04Speaker 14: sensational trial. I just don't want to see you. I
- 23:09Speaker 14: just don't want to see you publicized or damaged further
- 23:12Speaker 14: than you need to be.
- 23:15Speaker 16: Yeah. I don't know that I have much choice of
- 23:18Speaker 16: that matter, though I like that in the next few days,
- 23:28Speaker 16: I think they're going to decide whether they go with
- 23:31Speaker 16: the death penalty or not.
- 23:34Speaker 14: I don't know what the facts are, but you can't
- 23:38Speaker 14: change the facts, Michael. And if the facts aren't good,
- 23:42Speaker 14: you need to find a place to You don't want
- 23:48Speaker 14: to die, do you.
- 23:51Speaker 16: No, that's a pretty scary thing.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Michael Jones stood trial for Diana Do They Murder? In
- 24:00Speaker 1: October twenty nineteen. The state declared their intention to seek
- 24:05Speaker 1: the death penalty should the jury return a guilty verdict.
- 24:08Speaker 1: The defense argued that the evidence for murder was circumstantial.
- 24:12Speaker 1: They suggested that Diana could have sustained her fatal injuries accidentally.
- 24:17Speaker 1: If that was the case, Mike was only guilty of
- 24:20Speaker 1: panicking by placing her in the trunk of her car,
- 24:23Speaker 1: abandoning it in a parking lot, and hiding at a
- 24:26Speaker 1: Hampton inn. A medical expert for the defense testified that
- 24:30Speaker 1: the blunt force injury to her head alone could have
- 24:32Speaker 1: killed her, or Diana could have still been alive when
- 24:36Speaker 1: she was placed in the trunk. Under intense cross examination, however,
- 24:41Speaker 1: even this expert conceded that her death was best categorized
- 24:46Speaker 1: as a homicide. Michael Jones elected not to testify at
- 24:51Speaker 1: his trial. Whatever his version of events, it would not
- 24:55Speaker 1: be heard. It took the jury only forty five minutes
- 25:00Speaker 1: to convict him of first degree murder. The same jurors
- 25:03Speaker 1: would return the next month for the sentencing phase of
- 25:06Speaker 1: the trial, when they would decide if he should be
- 25:09Speaker 1: put to death.
- 25:10Speaker 3: You know, Michael David Jones can never be let back
- 25:14Speaker 3: out into the public. You know, he's a murderer. He
- 25:16Speaker 3: stole the life from my daughter, and you know I
- 25:21Speaker 3: don't want him to even stay the rest of his
- 25:25Speaker 3: life in jail. I want murder, one sentence now.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Lena Andrews spoke extensively during the penalty phase. Diana had
- 25:35Speaker 1: been her only child, the two had been extremely close.
- 25:39Speaker 1: She spoke of the plans that her daughter had made
- 25:41Speaker 1: for her own life and how thoughts of that lost
- 25:44Speaker 1: future would haunt her forever. Despite these heartbreaking pleas, when
- 25:49Speaker 1: the jury returned, there was one holdout. The vote was
- 25:54Speaker 1: eleven to one in favor of imposing a sentence of death.
- 26:00Speaker 5: Honestly find that the defendant, Michael Town should be said yeah, no.
- 26:06Speaker 1: A recent change in Florida law meant that for the
- 26:09Speaker 1: sentence to be imposed, the decision needed to be unanimous.
- 26:15Speaker 12: You gave one hold you see at my table, and
- 26:20Speaker 12: you took my daughter away from me.
- 26:22Speaker 9: There is no punishment, no harsh.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Enough for what you do for me.
- 26:26Speaker 13: You know you ain't good killed.
- 26:28Speaker 6: You would be dead now.
- 26:30Speaker 3: For what you do me.
- 26:33Speaker 1: In November twenty nineteen, Michael David Jones was sentenced to
- 26:38Speaker 1: life in prison without the possibility of parole.
- 26:43Speaker 3: It's all gone for me.
- 26:46Speaker 5: I'm never gonna have grandchildren, and they're gonna see my daughter.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Get you hold.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Wies.
- 26:55Speaker 12: You know get married, be happy.
- 27:01Speaker 3: I know she's gone, but it's so high to.
- 27:08Speaker 1: And that was the case of Diana Duvey. Thanks for watching,
