- 0:02Arsenal left side to the middle. What a move by Philip Forsberg.
- 0:06One of the best from Scoresberg. It's the podcast that loves the
- 0:12hockey team you love. Sorrow stops him with the
- 0:15blocker. This is the Predator's official
- 0:18podcast with Cara Hammer and Max hers for the empty net and hits
- 0:22it on about on one O 2 five and one O 6 three.
- 0:26The game at nashvillepredators.com, the
- 0:31Predators official podcast is on the road with the Predators 5
- 0:36game roadie that started on Monday night with an overtime
- 0:39loss in Colorado against the Avalanche.
- 0:42We've got two Preds games to recap including a four nothing
- 0:45shut out win against Utah on Saturday night in Smashville.
- 0:49We're going to do it right now. My name is Max Hers from Fred's
- 0:51radio along with Kara Hammer from Fred's TV who was also a
- 0:56road dog in Denver this week. Hello Rd.
- 0:59Hammer. What's up Max I I'm feeling
- 1:01pretty good, although I was a little bummed with just picking
- 1:04up the one point last night against the Avalanche.
- 1:06I mean, what a solid way the boys went out on Saturday night
- 1:10in Nashville. I was feeling good about the
- 1:12road trip after that game. Yeah, 2 pretty fun games over
- 1:18the last three nights here to finish up a busy stretch for the
- 1:21Preds. They played seven games in 12
- 1:24days, which is a really, really tough challenge in terms of
- 1:27rest. They finished two, four and one
- 1:30in those games. So could be better, could be
- 1:33worse. Predators are now 59 and two and
- 1:36have consecutive days off for the first time in two weeks,
- 1:40going into three games in four days in the middle part of this
- 1:44road trip. Edmonton Thursday night at 8,
- 1:46Calgary Friday night at 8 and Vancouver Sunday night at 9:00.
- 1:51So three games in four days in Western Canada coming up.
- 1:55We're going to go back to Saturday night in Smashville.
- 1:58First ever meeting against the Utah Hockey Club. 4 Nothing win
- 2:02for the Preds. Cara 26 save shut out for UC
- 2:05Soros. Yeah, going into that game, I
- 2:07had Gus Nyquist as my skateup interview.
- 2:09Obviously the the guys had a tough road trip right before
- 2:13that dropping the the game in Washington and I said, hey, you
- 2:18know, how important is it to pick up some points here before
- 2:21the road trip? And he goes, hey, we need
- 2:23points. It doesn't matter if they come
- 2:24on the on the road or at home, He said.
- 2:27We just need to get out. We need to get back to our game
- 2:28play connected. And the guys did that really
- 2:31well. I mean, Phillip Forsberg got the
- 2:32scoring started with the power play goal and I felt like that
- 2:35kind of set the tone. And one thing I really noticed
- 2:37in that game, Max, and one thing the guys kept saying is they
- 2:41simplified the game. And I think we saw that there
- 2:45wasn't a lot of of the mistakes we were seeing earlier.
- 2:48They were just, they were playing better.
- 2:52They were supporting each other and I think a lot of the things
- 2:55that we saw come together in the Predator system along the way
- 2:58last season have finally returned. 1st in small doses and
- 3:04then the last two games in bigger doses, which were really
- 3:08the first two games all year where the Predators played well
- 3:12in consecutive games all season. And it started, like you said,
- 3:15on the power play in the first period Saturday night against
- 3:18Utah. Gus Nyquist drew a penalty on
- 3:20the 2nd shift of the game. Top unit went to work.
- 3:23They had a long shift. They were out there for almost a
- 3:26minute and a half. Great to see those guys get a
- 3:28longer leash on the power play. Phillip Forsberg's first goal
- 3:32buried a wrister on the power play.
- 3:34Got a little bit of room. That's all he needed to let it
- 3:36fly. First of two on the night for
- 3:38Phil. And then UC Soros had what I
- 3:42thought was his best save of the game and what would become a 26
- 3:45save shutout going up against Nick Schmaltz right in front a
- 3:48falling save. Is that the right way to
- 3:51describe this? It was unreal.
- 3:54It was a save. It was not textbook whatever it
- 3:57was from juice. Soros was unbelievable that
- 4:01night. I feel like he was, but you
- 4:03know, I, I think overall it was the best defensive effort we've
- 4:06seen from the Preds. But Soros, he's been in mid
- 4:08season form and again, he just had a stellar showing.
- 4:12Yeah, it was impressive, and the Preds gave him the goal support
- 4:15from the beginning, so they end up going back on the power play,
- 4:18drawing 2 penalties in the same shift.
- 4:20Gus Nyquist was in the middle of it again.
- 4:23Logan Cooley hooked Roman Yossi and then during the delayed
- 4:26penalty, only Mata high stick, Gus Nyquist.
- 4:30They determined it was a 4 minute high stick on Mata.
- 4:35So the Preds got a full 2 minute, 5 on three and then
- 4:39potentially 2 more minutes of five on four on the back end of
- 4:43that. And the crazy part about it,
- 4:45Kara, the five on three was not amazing.
- 4:48They did not score. They generated shots, but it
- 4:53wasn't exactly what you want to see from A5 on three, and we
- 4:55heard that both after the game and heading into the next game
- 4:58from some of the Preds power play guys.
- 5:00Five on three didn't play the way we wanted it to, but then
- 5:04the top unit got another shift, five on four and got a massive
- 5:08goal. Roman Yossi's shot tipped in by
- 5:10Jonathan Marshiso made it 2. Nothing Preds after one.
- 5:14I think that's a great sign that even when a pivotal moment in
- 5:18the game doesn't go well, that same group of five able to
- 5:22bounce back and get it going on their next shift, 5 on 4.
- 5:25Yeah, and obviously a a huge boost for Jonathan Marshall.
- 5:28So, but leading into that, Max, I mean, we kind of saw the same
- 5:31thing in the second period. You saw Utah start to push back
- 5:34a little bit and Phil Forsberg, you know, grabs the the third
- 5:38goal of the game. That one comes unassisted.
- 5:40And that was a massive goal at that time in the period to kind
- 5:44of stave off any sort of pressure that Utah was putting
- 5:46on. Yeah, Filthy Phil, the one man
- 5:50show, just putting the team on his back right there to put that
- 5:53game out of reach for good. Flying through the defensive
- 5:56zone, flying through the neutral zone.
- 5:58He split Nick Schmaltz and Ollie Mata just inside the offensive
- 6:02blue line, then got in alone, cut to the right side, went high
- 6:06glove on Connor Ingram. Perfect shot, perfect cut,
- 6:09perfect everything from Phil. And I think my favorite part
- 6:13about this goal, by the end of the play, Coyotes defenseman
- 6:16Mike Kesselring was the closest guy to him.
- 6:19Big, tall, skinny defenseman who does not move amazingly well.
- 6:24And I don't think he even knew which way to look by the time
- 6:26the play was over. And he actually ended up falling
- 6:29about 3 full seconds after the goal went in because his brain
- 6:33was tied in such deep knots and. You just don't want to be that
- 6:38guy, right? Like you don't, you don't want
- 6:40to be that guy. You know, he's getting chirped
- 6:42when he comes off the ice. But Max, you know, for me, that
- 6:46was one of the best games we've seen from Phil.
- 6:48We we've seen Scoresberg, we know who Philip Forsberg is.
- 6:52But for this season, I felt like that was one of his best
- 6:55performances. I asked Coach Richards about it
- 6:57going into the third period and he said, well, you know, I, I
- 7:00asked him about Phil's game. He goes, this is Phil showing
- 7:03his power. When I say that, I mean he's
- 7:05using his size, he's using his body, he's skating well.
- 7:08He's able to get the shot off because of his power that he's
- 7:11using tonight. I think Andrew Brunette's words
- 7:15in the post game press conference were Phil was Phil
- 7:19tonight, yeah. I like when Phil is Phil, Things
- 7:22are good. Yeah, Phil was Phil, and Phil
- 7:25was full. Phil was fed.
- 7:28Have we ever used any of these puns before?
- 7:31We're not. OK, do we have something here or
- 7:34am I just an idiot lost on the road?
- 7:37I don't know what's Phil's full or Phil's fed.
- 7:39Phil is full. Well, he got two goals.
- 7:41Stat sheet was full. Fred's got an empty netter to
- 7:43seal it and make it for nothing over Utah.
- 7:46The goal was originally credited to Jonathan Marsha, so it
- 7:49actually ramped off of Gus Nyquist stick who was standing
- 7:53pretty much right next to him in the defensive zone.
- 7:56And Marsha so actually went out of his way to notify the stat
- 8:00keepers to change that goal to Gus Nyquist.
- 8:02So a golden assist for Jonathan Marsha.
- 8:05So in that game, his first multi point game as a Pred, two goals
- 8:08for Philip Forsberg, two power play assists, both primary
- 8:12assists for the captain Roman Yosi who played very well, and
- 8:15an empty netter for Gus Nyquist and a 26 save shutout for UC
- 8:19Soros Kara. Also, it was Hockey Fights
- 8:22cancer night in Smashville. Every time there's a Hockey
- 8:25Fights Cancer night, we have an exceptional Hockey Fights Cancer
- 8:30ambassador kid from Monroe Carroll Junior Children's
- 8:33Hospital at Vandy steal the show.
- 8:35This time it was the incredible 7 year old Harper, a beautiful
- 8:39little girl coming out by herself for the puck drop and
- 8:43just hamming it up beyond belief, pumping her fist for
- 8:47what felt like an hour and just being so happy to be out there
- 8:51before dropping the ceremonial first puck.
- 8:54I mean, shout out to Harper, she got the energy started that
- 8:57night. I feel like that's what the guys
- 8:59were able to feed off of. But Max, there really wasn't a
- 9:02dry eye in the building when you're watching this little 7
- 9:05year old. Roman told me after he dropped
- 9:07the puck that he had tears in his eyes on his way back to the
- 9:10bench. I know Willie Donnick and Chris
- 9:12Mason, they were both choked up on the broadcast.
- 9:15I mean, gosh it, it's so cool to see a a little kid who was
- 9:20fighting through something so difficult and so challenging and
- 9:25to just show you, you know, the, the glass is half full.
- 9:29Life is just out there. I I mean just what a cool
- 9:33moment, every second of it. Yeah, we learned that Harper has
- 9:37two more infusion treatments and is expected to be cancer free by
- 9:41New Year's. Incredible.
- 9:44What a star, what a star she is. And we raised $52,000 for the
- 9:48365 Pediatric Cancer Fund on the first of two Hockey Fights
- 9:53Cancer Nights this season. There'll be another one in the
- 9:56back half of the season. It is 2 a year now.
- 9:59Thanks to everybody who helped us.
- 10:00Pink. The rink wore their lavender and
- 10:02told us who you fight for and made their donations to Hockey
- 10:05Fights Cancer in Smashville on Saturday night.
- 10:07How about the donor recipient? Because they were also
- 10:10highlighted during hockey fights.
- 10:12Cancer where you're unaware that somebody gave the gift of life
- 10:16and the two people get to meet for the first time.
- 10:19I mean, it's just magical. There's just so many cool
- 10:21moments happening. Yeah, an absolute hit.
- 10:25An absolute hit for sure. Fred's beat Utah 4.
- 10:27Nothing on Saturday night. Big win on home ice to send them
- 10:31off to a road trip. I like the way Philip Forsberg
- 10:33said that to you Kara in the interview after the game.
- 10:36Thanks for sending us off fans. Onto a long road trip. 5 road
- 10:40games over 10 days starting Monday night in Denver.
- 10:43A three to two loss against the Avalanche.
- 10:46Fred's played ahead again first shift for the last minute line,
- 10:51the kid line, some even calling them the hairline.
- 10:55Luke Evangelista, Yuso Parson and Phil Tomasino going to work
- 10:58getting the goal of a minute 45 in.
- 11:01Evangelista puts the rebound home.
- 11:03What a silly he had scored one goal this year in the 1st 15
- 11:07games. It was an empty netter.
- 11:08You could feel the release from the pretty boy finally getting a
- 11:11real 1 to go. Yeah, that was awesome.
- 11:14I was at the game. I was sitting in the stands with
- 11:16my nephew and when he was coming back to the bench, I told I told
- 11:19my nephew Beau. Hey, his nickname is Pretty Boy
- 11:21Vincenzo. And.
- 11:23What did your nephew say? It's.
- 11:25Like Claw? Pretty Dang cool.
- 11:29Well, the pretty boy got the goal.
- 11:30It was a little bit of a greasy goal.
- 11:31Not a pretty goal. A minute 45 in assist to you.
- 11:34So Parsonen, who now has a four-game point streak, that is
- 11:37a big deal for Parsonen, casing down his seven game point
- 11:41streak. He had his rookie year Parson
- 11:43and certainly looks the best he's had since his rookie year
- 11:45two seasons ago. Mark Delgaizo, the secondary
- 11:48assist as well, did a great job getting that puck on net.
- 11:51He continues to play well as the young Preds come together for
- 11:56that initial goal. Preds took a one nothing lead in
- 11:59the first period of that game, gave up two goals to the ABS in
- 12:02the second period, found themselves down to 1 going into
- 12:06the third period of play. And then Roman Yossi started
- 12:10making plays like crazy. He had some huge defensive
- 12:13moments and block shots early in the game.
- 12:15Yossi did. And then in the third period he
- 12:18put the puck on a string first to draw everybody and set up
- 12:22Colton Sissons for the game tying goal early in the 3rd.
- 12:25And then nearly scored what would have been the game winner,
- 12:29going all the way around the offensive zone and it took a
- 12:33miracle save from Alexander Giorgiev to keep it out.
- 12:36I think I texted the group. How did that puck not go in?
- 12:40That was skating right there on the line.
- 12:42It just shimmied its way right back out.
- 12:45But Max, I felt like the guys were buzzing at the end of that
- 12:48period. I felt like they had numerous
- 12:49chances. I I had the feeling that they
- 12:52were going to come back and get the game-winning goal.
- 12:55Unfortunately, they were only able to just pick up the point
- 12:58and push this one into overtime. Yeah, and UC Soros was a big
- 13:02reason why I got into overtime. He had some massive saves, A ton
- 13:06of stops on Nathan McKinnon in this game.
- 13:08McKinnon was flying around as usual.
- 13:10Felt like he did not come off the ice.
- 13:13He had five shots. Sorrow stopped all five of them
- 13:16from the Nate Dogg lacking him, ranting in in tow the fellow
- 13:20Fins of UC Soros, his former World junior teammates.
- 13:24I think the Preds did a good job on those guys.
- 13:26It really felt like they played the entire game.
- 13:28And his biggest save was on guys from the second line, a Parker
- 13:31Kelly wrap around, which was a huge toe save to begin with, and
- 13:35then coming back across the other way for a glove save and
- 13:40hold on the rebound after the wrap around by Logan O'Connor.
- 13:44I I don't even want to say it was Soros's best save of the
- 13:47season because there have already been some insane ones
- 13:50here in the first month, but was that his best save of the
- 13:54season? I don't know.
- 13:55I think what if I was, I had to pick.
- 13:57I'm gonna go back to the Utah game in that first period save.
- 14:00I mean, they're spectacular saves.
- 14:02And for me, Max, that might have been the one for me.
- 14:04Yeah, they keep getting better. That's the crazy part.
- 14:08So overtime we went three on three, was fun with the big
- 14:10names we have in that overtime period.
- 14:13The Predators best chance came from Steven Stamkos, who looked
- 14:16like Nathan McKinnon streaking down the right wing.
- 14:18And Kara, we have been informed by NHL Edge that Stamkos
- 14:23carrying that puck in was the fastest any NHL player has
- 14:27skated this season, 24.2 miles an hour.
- 14:32He was moving. I mean, Stamkos was buzzing out
- 14:35there on the ice, Max, you could feel it.
- 14:37He just, he looked like he was, he was the Steven Stamkos we saw
- 14:40in Tampa. He he was shining in the
- 14:43overtime. Yeah, I couldn't quite get that
- 14:45puck on net on the final chance there as he took it in front.
- 14:49Avalanche end up winning on a giveaway by Brady Shea, who did
- 14:52play a solid game but had a crucial mistake and a crucial
- 14:55moment. Former Pred Sam Gerard took it
- 14:57from him and buried the breakaway.
- 14:59ABS beat the Preds 3:00 to 2:00 at overtime Monday night in
- 15:02Denver. It's little things right now as
- 15:06the Preds are still tied for last in the NHL, but they've
- 15:09played well each of the last two games.
- 15:11And stinks to say a full month into the season, but this is the
- 15:15first time they've played that competitively in two games in a
- 15:18row all year. If I'm going to quote the fans
- 15:23behind me at the game, the the, the, the real people with
- 15:28knowledge said, gosh, the preds always give us trouble.
- 15:32And and it kind of just summed it up right.
- 15:35Like it you always know they're going to bring it.
- 15:37But Max, I know it was frustrating for them to lose
- 15:40that game, but I still feel like it was, you know, picking up the
- 15:43point. They need all the points they
- 15:44can get right now. And I feel like it could just
- 15:47get the road trip going now that they're in Canada.
- 15:50I think it could help set the tone.
- 15:51They could build off of it. Yeah, two days off in a row,
- 15:54then they'll play the Oilers Thursday, Flames Friday and
- 15:57Canucks Sunday. Three games and four days
- 16:01against these Western Canada teams for the Preds.
- 16:03Speaking of things that sound tiring and dizzy stretches, I
- 16:07got to give a shout out to Jeremy Lozon for that ABS game.
- 16:10He had two very, very physically taxing defensive shifts in the
- 16:16second period of that game. First one was on the PK.
- 16:19He was out there for about a minute and a half and also wore
- 16:22a shot blocking it in front and then got back to the bench and
- 16:27basically had nothing left. His head was on the floor by the
- 16:30time that shift was over, both from the fatigue of the shift
- 16:33and the pain of blocking the shot.
- 16:35And then he had a 2 minute shift at even strength, with Roman
- 16:39Yosi, Gus Nyquist, Yusuf Parson and Jonathan Marshall all out
- 16:42there for over a minute and a half going up against the ABS
- 16:45Big 5, McKinnon Ranson and Lekinen Makar, Devon Taves.
- 16:51And they found a way to survive it.
- 16:54Yeah, they're coming together it looks like.
- 16:57You know, I think one thing that that fourth line to Max, we want
- 17:00to highlight them. They they had a bout of
- 17:04struggle, right? There were there was some
- 17:06moments where Bruno wasn't high on what they were doing.
- 17:08He benched on a Karen healthy scratch.
- 17:10But now they're back and they look like they're mentally all
- 17:14out there playing together. Yeah, they they've had the puck.
- 17:17It's been fun to see. And Zach LaRue had a couple of
- 17:20rink flipping plays in that Avalanche game as well.
- 17:23And as you said, Kara, you were at the game as a fan out there
- 17:26in Denver. There was a road hammer spotted
- 17:29on Fred's TV getting hyped for overtime.
- 17:32Is this true? This was true.
- 17:34I'm just glad that at least when the shot came to me, I wasn't
- 17:37eating the nachos that I was enjoying previously during the
- 17:40second period. I can't describe how exciting it
- 17:43was to go to the game and sit with the fans and enjoy it and
- 17:48watch the guys play. You know, when you're at
- 17:50Bridgestone Arena, there's still that sense of I'm working, we're
- 17:53here, you know? But just being on the road,
- 17:56watching them, I had a great time.
- 17:59It was so fun. The road hammer, ladies and
- 18:03gentlemen. She got the prints an overtime
- 18:05point. Prints are five, nine and two.
- 18:07Be back Thursday night in Edmonton against the Oilers, who
- 18:11the Preds have already lost to twice this season.
- 18:14Then three teams left on the road trip.
- 18:17Friday night Calgary, who the Preds have not yet played this
- 18:19season. Sunday night Vancouver, who the
- 18:21Preds have not yet played this season.
- 18:23And then next Wednesday, Seattle, who the Preds have
- 18:27played once at home so far this year.
- 18:30We'll have all that for you on Preds Radio and Preds TV.
- 18:33As usual. We'll take a break, come back
- 18:35and talk about a special night in Toronto earlier this week at
- 18:38the Hockey Hall of Fame. Preds GM David Poyle, Preds
- 18:41Captain Shay Weber are the 1st 2 homegrown Preds to go into the
- 18:47hall. Brooks Bratton was there.
- 18:48We'll talk to him about the Hall of Fame coming up next.
- 18:51She's Cara Hammer from Preds TV. I'm Max serves from Preds radio.
- 18:55This is the Predators official podcast.
- 19:08Welcome back to The Predator's official podcast here on ESPN.
- 19:11One O 2 five and one O 6 three. The game.
- 19:14My name is Max, hers from Preds Radio.
- 19:16Cara Hammer will be back with us next segment from Preds TV.
- 19:20We are joined now in Edmonton, AB, Canada by the original host
- 19:26of this Predator's official podcast, who is out of
- 19:29retirement as the Predators beat reporter back on the POP for the
- 19:32first time in over two years. Brooks Bratton is here.
- 19:36Hello, Brooksy. Max never did I think I would
- 19:39ever be in Edmonton ever again, let alone sitting in a hotel in
- 19:45Edmonton talking to you on the POP.
- 19:47But what an absolute pleasure it is to be back in the mix.
- 19:51POP trotting the globe, going back in time.
- 19:54A little reverse retro action here on the POP with Brooks's
- 19:57return. You know what?
- 19:58And I've done a podcast in this hotel.
- 20:02Every time I come back to Edmonton, I get flashbacks to
- 20:05the bubble, right? We were holed up here for, for
- 20:0810 days back in 20, I think back in 2020, I think I've done a
- 20:11podcast or two in this very venue.
- 20:14So it it feels right. It feels right to have you on
- 20:17and you were at the Hockey Hall of Fame this past weekend.
- 20:20The 1st 2. How are we terming this?
- 20:23Like you don't go in as a Pred like the Baseball Hall of Fame.
- 20:27The 1st 2 Homegrown Preds Hall of Famers went in.
- 20:30Yeah, I, I, I think that's fair to say.
- 20:32David Poyle and Shay Weber. Now, all of the artwork that the
- 20:36Hall of Fame produced had Shay in a Predator's jersey, even on
- 20:40his plaque, which the plaques, the drawings of the faces are in
- 20:45black and white. But he's clearly wearing a
- 20:47Predators jersey. And I think that's how everybody
- 20:49thinks of him, right? Especially for us, obviously had
- 20:52a few years there in Montreal at the end of his career was the
- 20:55captain LED them to the final in 21.
- 20:59But yeah, for all intents and purposes, he is a Nashville
- 21:02Predator. David Poll as well.
- 21:04I mean, he was AGM in Washington for 15 years before he came to
- 21:07Nashville. But again, to to your point, the
- 21:11first two home grown Predators. And I don't think I've ever used
- 21:15the word monumental so much in a, in a three or four day
- 21:18stretch. But I, you know, I, I really
- 21:20tried to emphasize that to me, it is a monumental occasion to
- 21:25have the 1st 2 homegrown Preds go into the hall representing
- 21:30Nashville. Just showing how far the
- 21:32franchise has come in 2526 years and, and what an honor to be
- 21:38there to cover it. It was really something special.
- 21:40And I say homegrown Preds. We know Paul Korea and Peter
- 21:43Forsberg are in the Hockey Hall of Fame and played for the
- 21:47Preds, so trying to find the best way to differentiate that.
- 21:50But this was these are the two monumental dudes, like you said.
- 21:54Who do you want to talk about first, Shay or David?
- 21:57Oh gosh, well let's start. So Sunday when we got there and
- 22:01it's a whole weekend. It's a 3-4 day event.
- 22:04So there were things going on Friday and Saturday before I
- 22:08even got there on Sunday. But the first thing that we
- 22:12really did on Sunday was David Poyle had a welcome dinner at
- 22:16the Hall, and not only at the Hall of Fame, but in the Grand
- 22:20Hall, which is where the trophies, the cup is that all
- 22:24the plaques are there. If you've ever been there, you
- 22:26know what I'm talking about. And you know, I was saying to
- 22:29someone earlier, I've been in that room a number of times as a
- 22:32fan and as a visitor, but I've never had Cabernet in that room
- 22:37before. Little Cabs Ave. in the Grand
- 22:39Hall. I was living my best hockey
- 22:41life. But you know, what a special
- 22:44occasion for David. I think the thing that stood out
- 22:46to me most was just the amount of people, the caliber of people
- 22:53who were there. And we know, you know, not only
- 22:55was David Poyle a general manager, obviously, but he
- 22:59worked a lot with the league, too.
- 23:01He was on the competition committee.
- 23:02He's been on the induction crew for the Hall of Fame as well.
- 23:06Obviously wasn't this year since he was, he was up and willing
- 23:10and able to join. But yeah, just the people who
- 23:13were there, I mean, you know, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman,
- 23:16Deputy Commissioner Bill Daley, lots of people from the league
- 23:19were there. So many people that David has
- 23:23known or worked with over the years.
- 23:25Some of those folks that we talked to, we talked to the
- 23:27commissioner, talked to Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette, of
- 23:31course, a former coach in Nashville, John Hines would have
- 23:34been there. But Minnesota, I think they were
- 23:37either playing that night or the next night.
- 23:38So he couldn't be there. But you know, guys like Paul
- 23:42Fenton, who was an assistant GM with David in Nashville, Ray
- 23:46Shiro, an assistant GM at one point in time in Nashville, just
- 23:51a lot of people, you know, you kind of look around the room and
- 23:55think, wow, there's there's a lot of hockey people here, a lot
- 23:58of really notable, impressive hockey people who came out to
- 24:03pay their respects to David to say thank you to David,
- 24:06congratulations to David. So I think that was really where
- 24:10it started. And I have to tell you this too.
- 24:12Again, it's all about the wine and food for me, right?
- 24:14But it wouldn't be, I think that I love chocolate, but David Poil
- 24:19loves chocolate even more than I do.
- 24:21And they had these little kind of chocolate Bundt cakes with
- 24:26the David Poil builder. He goes into the Hall of Fame as
- 24:29a builder. So they had that logo on top of
- 24:32it. And then they had chocolate lava
- 24:33cakes as well. We were kind of saying that we
- 24:35were wondering is the night was going on.
- 24:37We were like, when's the chocolate going to show up?
- 24:39There's got to show up at some point, right?
- 24:42But yeah, just a just a really cool night for David again, to
- 24:46be able to welcome so many people, receive some folks and
- 24:49for them to say thank you and for him to to say that back as
- 24:52well. It was it was a really great
- 24:53start to what led into the big day on Monday.
- 24:57Well, I feel like we've gone through this process locally in
- 25:00Nashville with David Poyle twice recently.
- 25:02First with him becoming the winningest GM in NHL history in
- 25:062018, then with his retirement and when he had his jacket
- 25:10fitting, his blazer fitting for the Hall of Fame, he said.
- 25:13I thought it was done being about me.
- 25:14I'm sorry guys, this is our last thing.
- 25:17So my question to you on that note, being there at the Hockey
- 25:19Hall of Fame for David Poyle, how was this different than the
- 25:23times we've honored him locally? Yeah, I, I think well, and, and
- 25:28you could say to Max, right, Like he's in the US Hockey Hall
- 25:30of Fame as well. And that celebrate that ceremony
- 25:33was held in Nashville a few years back, 2019, I want to say
- 25:3718 or 19. So I just think that this is
- 25:41different. And David had said it a number
- 25:43of times leading into it, that this is really the pinnacle of
- 25:47the sport. You know, it's one thing to
- 25:50become the winningest GM or to have these other honors along
- 25:54the way. But if you're someone in hockey
- 25:58and and pinnacle, you could go back and forth and say, yes,
- 26:01obviously you'd love to win the Stanley Cup.
- 26:03I think that at least as an NHL hockey player is a pinnacle.
- 26:06But you've got international tournaments, you've got Olympic
- 26:08medals, that sort of thing. But I think overall, it doesn't
- 26:12matter if you're a player, a coach, a manager and executive,
- 26:16a referee, an official, they can get into the Hall of Fame, media
- 26:19members can get in. I think if you are anybody
- 26:22involved in the game of hockey, that truly is the pinnacle.
- 26:25So I think that's why this is different and this matters more
- 26:30than anything else is there's nothing greater than this in
- 26:35hockey as far as recognition and celebration and just, you know,
- 26:41realizing the fact that you are now enshrined for the rest of
- 26:46time among the greatest people who have ever been involved in
- 26:50the game. And so I think not only for
- 26:52David but for Shay, I think that's why this matters more
- 26:56than probably anything else that could have happened in in this
- 26:59regard. Shay Webber into the Hockey Hall
- 27:01of Fame. The greatest predator of all
- 27:03time. You could argue the first home
- 27:05grown pred into the Hall of Fame.
- 27:07Just a player who commands the rink, commands any room, and he
- 27:13did such an exceptional job commanding the podium in his
- 27:17usual captain leeway, but also doing so in a very vulnerable
- 27:21and personal way that I know a lot of people in Nashville did
- 27:25get to contact Shay in that way, especially through his charity
- 27:28work. But I just love the contrast
- 27:30between the 105 mile an hour slap shot and the heart of the
- 27:35small town Canadian kid who made it.
- 27:37Yeah, and I, you know, for people like you and I, Max, like
- 27:41when you interacted with him in a locker room setting over the
- 27:45years, he's very stoic. He he's a private person, which
- 27:49he's obviously very entitled to. And, and it's funny, you know,
- 27:54his former teammates that I talked to as well have the
- 27:56chance to to talk to Peckerine on the red carpet, which we all
- 28:00love Pecks, of course, and. When is when is Peck eligible by
- 28:03the way? 2 years from now.
- 28:06Whenever it's so it's three years from when he retired, so
- 28:09he's got to be he's probably eligible, if not next year, then
- 28:13the year after. OK, let's make that happen.
- 28:15We'll, yeah, we'll check that out.
- 28:17And I think, you know, that's going to be a big debate going
- 28:18forward too. I, I think it's probably 5050.
- 28:21We're all biased, right? I mean, I think he, he deserves
- 28:24to get in. But yeah, Pecks.
- 28:25And he said that was first time he was ever there.
- 28:27Pecks is like, I'm such a fan. I'm so starstruck with all these
- 28:30guys. He had never been to to the
- 28:32ceremony before, so hopefully he gets up there one day.
- 28:35But yeah, with Shay, like, you know, Pekka brought it up, Other
- 28:39guys that I talked to brought it up.
- 28:40They said, you know, you probably don't get the side of
- 28:44Shay that we all see as a person, as as a captain of a
- 28:49hockey team, just on the ice, everything you could possibly
- 28:53want from a captain off the ice as a captain.
- 28:57He did the media thing. Didn't always love it, but was
- 29:01very respectful of it and and did it and understood it.
- 29:06But even, you know, I had the chance to talk to him on the
- 29:08phone last week before he went up.
- 29:11And it was great to just catch up with him for a minute and and
- 29:14hear him, you know, as as a husband, as a father and really
- 29:20kind of reflect on it from that perspective.
- 29:22He had a great moment at the podium where, you know, I think
- 29:26his brother, his father, his late mother, holding back some
- 29:30tears at that moment. And then moving on to his wife,
- 29:33Bailey and his three children. You know, he just he he thanked
- 29:37them for obviously the sacrifices that wives and
- 29:42children of hockey players make so that they can essentially
- 29:46live out their dreams. And, you know, he's he's so
- 29:50excited to just be able to pay all that back now and be there
- 29:53for them. And so it was really special
- 29:56just again, for Shay to go in the kind of player he is, but
- 30:01the kind of person he is. I think that's a theme that
- 30:04really kind of stood out as, yes, these guys are Hall of Fame
- 30:07players, but they're Hall of Fame people too.
- 30:09And you're not going in because, Oh yeah, he's a really good guy,
- 30:12right? But I I also think that that's
- 30:14still part of it or it should be part of it.
- 30:18And yeah, just for Shay again, as, as a Nashville Predator,
- 30:21everybody I think really thinks of him as a Nashville Predator.
- 30:25And I think he's more than happy to, to have that distinction.
- 30:29And I love too, he's heard him say on an interview that, you
- 30:34know, the only bad trade that David Poil ever made was
- 30:36trading, trading him away. I, I really, I really think that
- 30:39they both appreciated going in with each other.
- 30:42You know, we all talk about the trade, we all know the trade in
- 30:452016, but I think that meant a lot to both of them just because
- 30:50of what David means for the Prez franchise, what Shea meant for
- 30:53the Prez franchise. For them to go in together I
- 30:55think was really special. My favorite part of Shea's
- 30:59speech, which you included Brooks in your article on
- 31:01nationalpredators.com, talking about his family.
- 31:03Like you said, he said his dad worked in a sawmill and sold his
- 31:08prized possession, his Mustang, so that Shay and his brother
- 31:10could continue to play hockey. That is the hockey lifestyle
- 31:15right there. That is the love of the game.
- 31:18I think that's front and center of what the Hall of Fame should
- 31:21be showcasing about the sport. Well, and the sacrifice too,
- 31:24right? Like it's an individual award,
- 31:26but I think that was another theme that really stuck out to
- 31:29me from the weekend is that nobody gets there without a
- 31:32village of people. David Poyle was very just really
- 31:36made sure to make it a point to talk about that the whole time
- 31:40the village that he had to get them there to get him there.
- 31:44And the same with Shay. Like that's but that's the
- 31:46parents sacrifice that you know what?
- 31:49This is my prize Mustang. But if my two boys can play
- 31:53hockey, can have better opportunities, if we can bring
- 31:55in a little cash, if I can get rid of this, that's what you do,
- 31:58right? And I'm sure it was worth it at
- 32:00the time. It's certainly worth it now.
- 32:03But, yeah, that's just the love and the respect.
- 32:05And I think for David Poyle, too, you know, his wife,
- 32:07Elizabeth, they've been together for over 50 years.
- 32:09They met when they were in high school and he told Elizabeth
- 32:13when they were in high school that he was going to be an NHL
- 32:16general manager one day. And she has been by his side
- 32:19through the entire journey. And he said, I love what David
- 32:23said about, you know, I've scored the hat trick of life,
- 32:27right? It's the person that you marry
- 32:29and spend the journey with. It's the your job that you get
- 32:32to do, which I mean, NHL general manager isn't really a job.
- 32:36It's a job. It's a lot of work, but it's
- 32:39still one of those pinch me jobs.
- 32:41And then the places you get to live too, They've loved, you
- 32:43know, starting out in Atlanta, they went to Calgary,
- 32:46Washington, Nashville. The hat trick of life.
- 32:49I love that. That's the way that David Poyle
- 32:50put it. And that is very apropos of what
- 32:53the weekend was really all about was the people that got them
- 32:56there. We'll close with this on that
- 32:58note, Shay Weber, a big shout out to partner in his speech,
- 33:02the beloved locker room attendant.
- 33:03Yeah, I and I have to imagine that because like you said, Paul
- 33:06Korea, Peter Forsberg therein, but I have to imagine the
- 33:10partner has never been given a shout out in a Hockey Hall of
- 33:13Fame speech. Every, everybody loves partner,
- 33:16right? Like everybody around the
- 33:17league, not just Preds players, but everybody knows who Partner
- 33:21is, players, coaches, equipment, staff and how well deserved for
- 33:27Craig Partner BA to get a shout out from Shay Weber, who we know
- 33:30will be excited to see when Shay is there in a couple weeks to be
- 33:34honored. November 23rd, I think it is
- 33:37before Winnipeg that game he and David will drop the puck.
- 33:40But you know, we love Partner. And then now the whole hockey
- 33:44world knows how much a guy like Shay Weber, how much he meant to
- 33:47him. It'll be a lot of fun to see
- 33:49David Poyle and Shay Weber in Smashville for the Preds next
- 33:52home game. The two newly minted Hall of
- 33:54Famers Saturday night, November 23rd.
- 33:57The Preds next home game at the end of this long road trip.
- 33:59It's against The Jets. It's at 6:00.
- 34:01Shay Weber and David Poyle will be there with their Hall of Fame
- 34:04Blazers. Rings any other bling they may
- 34:09have picked up over the course of the weekend.
- 34:11I think that was, I don't know if the I got a program, I got a
- 34:17program. I did get a signed David Poyle
- 34:20puck too. That was pretty cool.
- 34:22But yeah, I don't know if they're bringing anything else.
- 34:25They're bringing, they're bringing smiles, they're
- 34:27bringing positive attitudes, but they're bringing, they're
- 34:30bringing a heck of a weekend experience too with them.
- 34:32So obviously so well deserved. Really excited to see them here
- 34:36in a couple weeks again. Brooks Bratton Smile is back on
- 34:39the Predators Official Podcast for the first time in two years.

- 36:25and an amazing view. Highly highly recommend that.
- 36:28It's awesome. I've been to a couple of
- 36:30concerts there too. It's cool and it it in a good
- 36:33way, doesn't feel like you're on Broadway.
- 36:35Just like when you're at the Preds game, you feel like you're
- 36:38in a different world even though you're on Broadway.
- 36:40You're not sucked into all the noise of Broadway.
- 36:44It's a good spot. It's a great spot.

- 37:29Kara. How Gill lives at the Hap and
- 37:33Harry's tap room. It's Hap, Harry and Hal I think.
- 37:37There's a reason to. Rebrand this.
- 37:39There's a reason HAP is only one letter away from Hal.
- 37:43Hal and Harry's. Hal Hap and Harry's.
- 37:44Harry is short for Harold, which is given name.
- 37:49We also want you to get together this holiday season in

- 38:39fans in your family or in your group.

- 38:45And we already mentioned how Gil wants Kara.
- 38:48We got to give a big shout out to the Gil family this week
- 38:51because on Wednesday morning, how's daughter Sophie?
- 38:55Part of National Signing Day. She's signing to play college
- 38:58lacrosse at the University of Rhode Island, where Hal's oldest
- 39:02daughter Izzy is already part of the inaugural team at Roadie
- 39:06this year. So big Congrats to Sophie.
- 39:08Congrats to all the Gill family. We love you guys.
- 39:13Oh my gosh, so happy for Sophie Gill.
- 39:16I mean the girls, Izzy and Sophie, obviously just a part of
- 39:19our family and couldn't couldn't be happier for her.
- 39:24Sad that Hal can't be there, but the Edmonton to Nashville flight
- 39:29didn't quite line it up. But there will be plenty of
- 39:32celebrations when we return. You know that for some people at
- 39:38home that are listening may not know this, that skill seeds
- 39:40actually work, has worked as a lacrosse coach.
- 39:42So This is why the girls are so involved.
- 39:44This is kind of like his his thing outside of hockey that he
- 39:48does. It's awesome to see how lacrosse
- 39:51has grown in Tennessee. It's blown up in the last 1015
- 39:55years, especially for the girls and women's game, which is
- 39:57amazing. Maybe this is what we need to
- 40:01gear Remy towards Max. I have not thought about
- 40:03lacrosse. I mean, I've been so focused on
- 40:05what sport I'm going to start her with.
- 40:07Obviously soccer. Soccer is like the best sport to
- 40:10start any toddler at. It helps them learn like playing
- 40:14together as a team and just running around and kicking a
- 40:16ball. I mean, this is what kids do.
- 40:19But but maybe it's lacrosse. I think she's a horseback rider
- 40:24based on the footage I've seen. I think she's just going to do
- 40:28it all. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:31I couldn't agree more. So Remy will get on it.
- 40:34We'll take a break and come back with our interview of the week.
- 40:37Speaking of multi sport activities, we'll talk about the
- 40:41players in other sports that Philip Forsberg was compared to
- 40:44by his teammate and head coach after his highlight reel goal
- 40:48against Utah on Saturday night in Smashville.
- 40:51That's our interview of the week.
- 40:52Coming up next, she is Cara Hammer from Fred's TV.
- 40:55I'm Max Hurst from Fred's radio. You're listening to the
- 40:57Predators official podcast here on ESPN 102.5 and 106.3 the
- 41:02game. Yeah, sometimes we laugh,
- 41:13sometimes we cry, but I guess you know now.
- 41:23Welcome back to the Predators official Podcast here on ESPN
- 41:26102.5 and 106.3. The game talking to you from
- 41:29Edmonton where the Prince will play the Oilers Thursday night,
- 41:33game two of their five game road trip start of three Rd. games in
- 41:36four nights. Thursday night at 8 against the
- 41:39Oilers, Friday night at 8 against the Flames, and Sunday
- 41:42night at 9:00 against the Vancouver Canucks.
- 41:46My name is Max Ers from Fred's radio, with Kara Hammer from
- 41:49Fred's TV. Kara.
- 41:50I didn't realize this until after the game Saturday when we
- 41:53were kind of talking it out on the air.
- 41:55I knew that the Grey Cup, the Canadian football championship,
- 41:59was this Sunday. I didn't.
- 42:01I didn't realize it was in Vancouver, literally right next
- 42:06door to where the Preds will be playing and the games are three
- 42:08hours apart. That could be pretty crazy.
- 42:11Oh my gosh, do you think he'll try to go?
- 42:13I would like to, but we definitely wouldn't be able to
- 42:16stay the whole game. Do we know the CFL team's play?
- 42:21It's the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Jay Moore's beloved Bombers.
- 42:25OK. And the Argos, who are the big
- 42:28city Yankees of the CFL? Toronto.
- 42:34All right, I'm up. Well, I went to College in
- 42:36Wyoming and a few of the Wyoming Cowboy players who were on the
- 42:40team while I was in college or that I covered post, spent time
- 42:44in the CFL, but I think I don't know any of the guys up there
- 42:48now. You would be forgiven if you
- 42:51didn't. So I think it would be a lot of
- 42:53fun. But yeah, we got to look at the
- 42:56feasibility of the timing of all this.
- 42:58The other fun wrinkle is the halftime show is the Jonas
- 43:03Brothers. What?
- 43:05Yeah. So like that alone might be
- 43:08worth going. Are they Canadian?
- 43:14I they accept Canadian currency I guess for this gig.
- 43:19Interesting. Yeah.
- 43:21I mean, I I feel like, I feel like this, this needs like a
- 43:25little. I don't know, I got nothing.
- 43:31I don't either. I would like to go, but I can't
- 43:33think that far ahead. That's three cities away right
- 43:35now. But yeah, we'll let you guys
- 43:37know what happens. I I kind of do really want to
- 43:40go, but we'll figure it out. But yeah, it could be an
- 43:43interesting weekend in Vancouver.
- 43:44Preds will be there for a couple days.
- 43:46The Grey Cup will be there. Obviously an amazing city to
- 43:49begin with. Preds were there for the
- 43:50playoffs last year. So playoff rematch, Grey Cup on
- 43:54the line. But just like, imagine that if
- 43:58the Super Bowl, when it does come to Nashville in five years,
- 44:02whenever that is, for the first time, imagine if the Preds had a
- 44:05game that started 3 hours after the Super Bowl started down the
- 44:09street. Like that's the Canadian
- 44:10equivalent of what's going on here.
- 44:12Seems a little tight to me, but we'll make it work.
- 44:16Maybe they have better logistics, I don't know.
- 44:19Maybe they do, but maybe they don't.
- 44:21We'll figure that out over the weekend.
- 44:23We'll finish up the podcast today with our interview of the
- 44:26week. We talked about Philip
- 44:27Forsberg's highlight reel goal against Utah on Saturday night.
- 44:30In the first segment, he started galloping through everybody, put
- 44:33the team on his back. And after the game, Fred's
- 44:37goalie UC Soros had a nice cross sport comparison for Phil's
- 44:42goal, answering a question by Tennessee and reporter Alex
- 44:45Doherty. You see a guy like Forsberg make
- 44:49that play on that second goal. What does that do for you at the
- 44:52other end of the ice, seeing them, that kind of effort, that
- 44:54kind of skill? Yeah, yeah, obviously that's
- 44:57that's pretty cool. I think that obviously brings
- 44:59energy, kind of reminded me of like Anthony Edwards or
- 45:02something like that, like just attacking the rim.
- 45:05But yeah, that was that was impressive.
- 45:08Juice pulling out the basketball comparison.
- 45:11We know Juice is a basketball guy, his dad is a basketball
- 45:16referee in Finland, which is the coolest job of all time.
- 45:20What do you think? Hammer, Ant Man going to the
- 45:22rim? Phil taking it to the hole.
- 45:25I think I like it. And you know, what's interesting
- 45:27about this, Max, is Willie Donnick also had a had a
- 45:29basketball reference that he was so proud to tell me about last
- 45:33night. There was a move in the game and
- 45:34he said he came up the ice and he goes he he was shifty, a
- 45:37little like Jamal Murray. Oh, Nuggets for you.
- 45:41I know Willie was so proud he couldn't wait to come and tell
- 45:44me. So I I think when you have the
- 45:46basketball knowledge and you grow up in that world, you, you
- 45:49see a little bit of it translate over to hockey.
- 45:52Well, the ABS Arena is also one of the places where we walk past
- 45:55the NBA locker room to get to the hockey area in the press
- 45:58box. And I'm always hoping, like
- 46:00Nicola Yokich is just going to poke his head out as I'm walking
- 46:03by and say hey. Same, same.
- 46:06I mean, I would just love to meet the Serbian at some point.
- 46:09Yeah. I think everybody has that, that
- 46:11athlete that you would love to just, hey, that to me, that'd be
- 46:14like Nicole Yokich. Yeah, I think he'd vibe with the
- 46:17podcast. So we got we got the basketball
- 46:20comp on the goal. I wanted to take this even
- 46:23deeper, so I asked Andrew Brunette what he thought of the
- 46:26comparison. Philip Forsberg had two goals in
- 46:29that game. His even strength hole was a
- 46:31thing of beauty. UC Sorrow said after the game
- 46:33that he looked like Anthony Edwards attacking the rim.
- 46:36Do you like that description? Oh wow, yeah, I never heard that
- 46:38one. I just said maybe, you know, I
- 46:40know there's soccer guys. I was thinking maybe Pele or
- 46:42Messi going through the whole team.
- 46:44But yeah, no, it was a it was a Bobby Orr's for the people who
- 46:47don't remember Bobby Orr, those that kind of goal.
- 46:50So we got it switched to soccer now Pele, Messi, it kind of did
- 46:56have that feel getting on your hopes on the dribble.
- 47:00Yeah, we'll have to ask. We'll have to ask Bill what?
- 47:04How he would describe it. Well, here you go, Kara.
- 47:07Your wish is my command. UC said after the game that the
- 47:11goal looked like Anthony Edwards attacking the rim.
- 47:14Did you hear that? Do you like that?
- 47:15He told me that. Before.
- 47:16And yeah, I mean, I'm not. Super familiar with basketball
- 47:19but I know him and he's obviously one.
- 47:20Heck. Of a player, so I'll take that
- 47:21anyway. Well, I asked Bruno what he
- 47:23thought about it. He went right to soccer, so he
- 47:25said you looked like Messy or Pele.
- 47:26Is that better? That's in.
- 47:27Yeah, that's now again a. Little bit out of control, but I
- 47:29yeah, certainly, certainly. We'll take that.
- 47:35And we know Phil is such like a soccer guy, loves football as
- 47:38they refer to it. It's cool.
- 47:43I love everybody pumping his tires a little bit.
- 47:46Yeah, he gave a little let's slow the deal here, but also
- 47:50I'll take being called the messy of hockey.
- 47:53That will work well for me, says Philip Forsberg.
- 47:56So fun stuff. I think the Preds do have a
- 47:58little bit more of the fun aspect back in their game.
- 48:01Big tests on the road coming up this week.
- 48:03Oilers on Thursday night at 8, Flames on Friday night at 8.
- 48:07Canucks on Sunday night at 9:00. We'll talk to you late night on
- 48:11Preds Radio how Gill and I will have the call for all those
- 48:13games and then the finale of the road trip next Wednesday night
- 48:17at 9 in Seattle. And then we will finally be back
- 48:20home 2 Saturdays from now to start Thanksgiving week on
- 48:24Saturday night the 23rd of November at 6:00 against the
- 48:28Winnipeg Jets. That's a 6:00 start your
- 48:31Saturday night in Smashville because of Hockey Night in
- 48:34Canada with Winnipeg in town. Good stuff Hammer, the road
- 48:38Hammer brought it. We'll get some points for you up
- 48:40in Canada hopefully and talk to you later this week or early
- 48:43next week on our next show All. Right.
- 48:46Have fun and have fun. He's Kara Hammer from Freds TV.
- 48:50I'm Max Hurst from Freds Radio. Thanks to Connor Newt for
- 48:53producing today's episode back in Nashville.
- 48:56And thank you for listening to the Predators official podcast.
