- 0:03Hey guys, this is the Daily Ripples.
- 0:06This is Corey.
- 0:08Our friend Pastor Mike is out for a couple days, so he asked me to fill in.
- 0:13And so today's June 11th, Faith at Home.
- 0:18The Stone, a meaningful spiritual life shows up where I live.
- 0:23It is not proven in public spaces alone, but in how I treat those closest to me.
- 0:29Ripple 1. Practical. Today I will give my attention to my family and those closest to me.
- 0:34I will listen, show patience, and be present. Real change is not what I say. It is how I constantly
- 0:41show up. Ripple 2. Spiritual. Jesus lived out love in everyday relationships. As I follow him,
- 0:48the Holy Spirit shapes my actions at home. The Father's work in me becomes visible not through
- 0:54words, but there's steady kindness, patience, and care. I was thinking about this, and I
- 1:02was thinking about where I show up at home and where I practice this stuff, and I was
- 1:10thinking about my yard. My yard, we had these people come over and cut the yard every other
- 1:16week. And two weeks ago, I think it was, man, it didn't even need to be cut. So I texted him and
- 1:24said, hey, it doesn't need to be cut, but I'm on this rotation of every other week. And then last
- 1:30week I told him, I said, hey, you know, it needs to be cut. And anyways, but, you know, I wasn't on
- 1:40that rotation. And, you know, I don't know. I think about that a little bit. And I think about,
- 1:46I was mad the other day because my yard's kind of grown up,
- 1:49and now I'm talking to my significant other,
- 1:52and I was like, what are the neighbors going to think about me?
- 1:55And she was like, what do you think they already think about you?
- 1:59She made a good point.
- 2:01But some of my neighbors now today do like me,
- 2:03and that's really cool because it hasn't always been that way.
- 2:08I wave at them.
- 2:09I get to wave at them.
- 2:10Those are the people closest to me.
- 2:12They live closest to me, and I affected their lives.
- 2:15you know, quite a while ago.
- 2:19But, you know, today I don't affect their lives like that.
- 2:22And today I'm like, you know, in my mind,
- 2:25I'm like worried about my yard when I used to be running around,
- 2:29you know, at all times of the night and different things would happen.
- 2:34But, you know, my yard, it's funny because, you know,
- 2:37that's close to me and you maintain these things and keep them up
- 2:43because you want to keep the neighborhood up.
- 2:45And I used to not think like that.
- 2:48I used to not care about things like that at all.
- 2:51That was not in my life.
- 2:52To care about it was, you know, it was more on selfish needs and selfish wants.
- 3:00And where it says public spaces alone, it says it is not proven in public spaces alone.
- 3:07And I don't know, but today I find that, you know, I try to practice this stuff more at my house than I...
- 3:14do in public spaces because all I did was practice this stuff in public spaces for so many years.
- 3:25It was always a front.
- 3:27It was always a front of being someone I wasn't.
- 3:32And today I'm trying to be the person I am, that God wants me to be.
- 3:37On page 19 of the big book, it tells me where I'm supposed to demonstrate this stuff.
- 3:41And it says in my home, occupations and affairs.
- 3:47And doing it in my home is probably the hardest thing to do sometimes
- 3:54because I don't always get to get the...
- 4:04Man, when I see a guy come in and he's broken and his life starts changing around
- 4:10and I get to watch that, there's a lot of happiness from that,
- 4:17just to be a part of something bigger than me and watching God do those things.
- 4:23When I do it at home, in the beginning, I guess,
- 4:26when I first started just doing the dishes, I didn't get much out of it.
- 4:34Today I do.
- 4:35Today I get a sense of being in this family.
- 4:38I mean, we were talking to my son the other day, and he's a spitting image of me.
- 4:47And I was telling him, I said, you know, man, we're in this family, and this family's a unit.
- 4:53And everybody contributes, and we all do different things.
- 4:57And we were talking about chores.
- 5:00But, you know, I'm not always seeing it like this, but, you know, today I see it, you know, we all participate.
- 5:06And participation is important to be a part of.
- 5:11Just like in, you know, the rooms of the Anonymous is, right?
- 5:16It's, you know, getting a service position so I can be a part of.
- 5:22You know, getting a home group, getting a part of that home group.
- 5:25Because, you know, I can get so lost on the other two sides of the recovery side or different pieces of that.
- 5:32But, like, you know, I have to be a part of.
- 5:35And, you know, because that's what alcohol did for me.
- 5:39It gave me unity with most people.
- 5:41It gave me unity where I never had it, you know, because I felt lost.
- 5:48You know, I never knew.
- 5:51Well, I was adopted, and, you know, I always thought it was because of that.
- 5:55I always thought that I didn't feel a part of this family because they weren't my real family.
- 6:02And, you know, I found out today it was just a spiritual malady because there's millions of other people that are adopted.
- 6:09And, you know, I would find other things, you know, because if you had some siblings, I was like, man, those kids have siblings.
- 6:16And my ego just separated me from you constantly.
- 6:20And so I've lived my life like this, and I think it's the coolest thing because, you know, this weekend we went to church.
- 6:29And, you know, my sponsor and his wife came with us.
- 6:34And they've been instrumental in my life since I've been back in the Alcoholics Anonymous and recovery.
- 6:44And I was thinking about that because, you know, when we first started, we used to have dinner with them every Sunday.
- 6:51Probably for close to a year, we had dinner with them every Sunday night.
- 6:56And we'd go over there and they'd cook dinner and my sponsor would pray.
- 7:05And, you know, he would do dishes and this and this.
- 7:09And, you know, what a demonstration that is to me of how I need to be.
- 7:14And, you know, not too far off from when we first started doing that, I started praying.
- 7:22And I do dishes.
- 7:24And, you know, he just being that demonstration to me has led to so many different things in my life today of how I need to be to my family, how I need to be to my son.
- 7:37And it's so important, though, because I can get caught up.
- 7:41And I had got caught up, you know, previous years ago.
- 7:46I remember I was kind of new into the recovery deal.
- 7:52And this is one of my first stint in this deal.
- 7:57And, man, I was going to as many meetings as I could.
- 8:00And I found that that's exactly what I needed to do at the time.
- 8:06But I'll tell you that I used to go to and drink and go out as much as I could, too, as well.
- 8:16And I found that I was hiding away in these meetings.
- 8:21And I was.
- 8:22I mean, you know, I would get off work at 2.30, go to the 2.30.
- 8:27Then I'd go to the 5 o'clock, 5.30 meeting.
- 8:31Then I'd go to another 7 or 8 o'clock meeting.
- 8:38Because I was scared to face life.
- 8:41I was scared to face the people in my life because, you know,
- 8:44I knew how much damage I've caused them.
- 8:49I couldn't look people in the eye.
- 8:52But, you know, at that time, that's what I did.
- 8:55And it was a Sunday, and I was living with the mother of my son.
- 8:59And I went to a noon, went to a 12 o'clock meeting, and then I went to a 2.30 meeting.
- 9:08And I got home, and that house was empty.
- 9:12She'd taken all his stuff out and all the furniture.
- 9:16And I came home to an empty house.
- 9:19And, you know, people, you know, that's why I think, you know,
- 9:27I see from my life, at least, it's so important to put my family first.
- 9:31And it's a really interesting deal because on 164, it tells me that,
- 9:38and I used to contribute this to a different thing,
- 9:42but today it means a lot more to me.
- 9:49It says, our book is meant to be suggestive only.
- 9:53We realize we know a little.
- 9:56God will constantly disclose more to you and to us.
- 10:01Ask him in your morning meditation what you can do each day for the man who is still sick.
- 10:08The answers will come if your own house is in order.
- 10:12In that part right there, I used to think, you know, well, that's just in my house and my house in my head with God and my life.
- 10:19And, but then it goes on to say, but obviously you cannot transmit something you haven't got.
- 10:29See to it that your relationship with him is right and great events will come to pass for you and countless others.
- 10:35This is the great fact for us.
- 10:37And, yeah, I find today, you know, that it is, you know, it is.
- 10:41You know, it is a great fact for me in my life that I'm able to sit down with other men and talk to them.
- 10:50And, you know, because it goes on to say on page 100, if you have been successful in solving your own domestic problems, tell the newcomers how that was accomplished.
- 11:03You know, and how that was accomplished was very, I mean, it seems more simple than it really is.
- 11:08it, you know, was bringing God into it, bringing God into our meals, bringing God in, you know,
- 11:17when we get down on our knees together, you know, we, you know, God is the central fact
- 11:22of our relationship.
- 11:25And it gets kind of out of whack.
- 11:26And I think that getting out of whack thing kind of, you know, it kind of can go into,
- 11:31and I've talked about this before on here, but it kind of is like meditation, right?
- 11:35you know, my breath. And if you've ever meditated, you know that you're following your breath. And
- 11:40if you've ever done a guided meditation, it'll, you know, it'll say in there too. It'll be like,
- 11:45you know, hey, if your thoughts come, you know, thoughts get out, could go left or right or whatever,
- 11:50you know, just come back to your breath. And I find myself in, you know, sometimes in that today,
- 11:56you know, but I don't beat myself up about it because it's just part of it. And,
- 12:02you know, I just come back to it and I come back to God. But it's the, you know, but what I don't
- 12:09come back to because I don't stop it is my daily practices. My daily practices of waking up on my
- 12:16knees, my daily practices of doing my readings, doing my prayers and doing whatever that looks
- 12:23like for that time. But, you know, it's really, you know, a great example, page 84 through 88,
- 12:28You know, it says on page 85, it's like, you know, hey, you know, what's God's vision for today?
- 12:32Well, I might want to ask him.
- 12:34I might want to ask God what the vision is for my day.
- 12:38And I do.
- 12:42And so when I do these consistent things, you know, God is the central fact of my life.
- 12:46But, you know, sometimes I can get into a little bit of self and something will make me mad or she'll say something or I'll say something.
- 12:53I always say something wrong, you know.
- 12:55I've never been always saying the right things at the right time.
- 12:59I've been more of saying the wrong things at the wrong time.
- 13:05But today it gets better, and today it is a lot better.
- 13:12When we eat dinner, we get to pray over these people that we know that are closest to us,
- 13:16that are going through things.
- 13:19It's a cool thing because we come back into one.
- 13:25So then it goes on to say,
- 13:28Jesus lived out love in everyday relationships.
- 13:32As I follow him,
- 13:34the Holy Spirit shapes my actions at home.
- 13:38And it has.
- 13:41And so we're going to end this with a prayer.
- 13:44Father, help me live out my faith at home.
- 13:47Through your spirit, teach me to love with patience and consistency.
- 13:51Reflecting the heart of your son is my closest relationship.
- 13:55Amen.
- 13:56Thank you.
