- 0:27the sand, the surf, the beaches.
- 0:30Tonight on a special profile episode of Break Fix.
- 0:32We talk cars, movies, and more with special guests, Paul Wilky.
- 0:37We're very excited to have Paul on the show.
- 0:39Some of you might remember him from his days coaching at Hooked on driving events
- 0:43in the Northeast before he moved to Sunny California, but did you know that he's
- 0:48an avid motor sports enthusiast, amateur photographer, and all around Petrolhead.
- 0:53And as always, I'm your host Brad.
- 0:55And I'm Eric.
- 0:56So let's roll.
- 0:57Pauly.
- 0:58Paulie.
- 0:58Paulie.
- 0:59What's going on?
- 1:00How you doing?
- 1:03It's been a minute, man.
- 1:04How are you?
- 1:05Good dude.
- 1:07Doing well.
- 1:08I've only been here for, what, two and a half years or whatever it, it
- 1:11is the rainy season in la It's weird.
- 1:15It gets pretty chilly for la.
- 1:17It gets, uh, like highs in like the fifties, low fifties, and at
- 1:22night it gets into the, it could get into the forties, low forties.
- 1:26Do you have the may gray just like they have in San Diego?
- 1:29No, we don't.
- 1:30Uh, it's like December gray.
- 1:33Yeah, it can get kinda shitty.
- 1:34And, uh, LA drivers are horrible to begin with.
- 1:37Like the worst.
- 1:39Honestly the worst drivers I've ever seen.
- 1:41I've driven all over the world and I, I put 'em, I put 'em up with like India, you
- 1:46know, where it's like a, it's a fucking free for all, you know what I mean?
- 1:50Exactly.
- 1:51Um, and then when it rains, it's like New Yorkers trying to drive
- 1:54in the snow 'cause they don't know how to deal with it, you know?
- 1:58So they don't know how to deal with rain here 'cause it rains four times a year.
- 2:02Yeah.
- 2:02So I'm doing nine, you know, 80, 90 on in the left lane.
- 2:05People are doing like 40 in a 70 and stuff like that.
- 2:09And like, it's a shit show.
- 2:11But you haven't worn a stitch of actual long winter clothing
- 2:15since you've left, I'm assuming.
- 2:17It's funny that you say that.
- 2:18A week ago I wore my only winter jacket for an evening, and it
- 2:24was, I was like, holy shit.
- 2:26I actually brought a winter jacket here and I wore it.
- 2:29First question to that though is, was it either Tweed or Hounds Tooth.
- 2:34And did you wear that freaking cravat that you used to bring to the track?
- 2:39No, it was a, it a, it was a barber, you know, barber, that British company?
- 2:42Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:43Barber jacket.
- 2:44And, uh, you can't get away with that shit in la, you know,
- 2:48all that people wear here.
- 2:49Honestly, it's weird, man.
- 2:51Like, people either dress to the nines if you're in, um, you know,
- 2:56Beverly Hills or something like, yeah.
- 2:57Yeah.
- 2:58Everyone else is like shorts and a t-shirt or a sweatshirt.
- 3:02It's so laid back and, uh, so, so what you're saying is the Ralph
- 3:05Furley look is totally out for you?
- 3:07It doesn't work.
- 3:08Totally out, dude.
- 3:09I wear like, I'm wearing like a zip up cardigan and, and a t-shirt
- 3:14and I probably look like an idiot, but, uh, and I live alone.
- 3:18I've got two cats, so, uh, no one was complaining.
- 3:22So you're playing the part of De Niro as the crazy cat lady.
- 3:25I get it.
- 3:25Pretty much.
- 3:27So let's talk a little bit about your car enthusiast past, like all the
- 3:31different kind of cars you've had.
- 3:33You and I have a similar background that people just happen to hand
- 3:36us keys a lot and we get to drive some really interesting cars.
- 3:40I noticed the other day on Instagram you were behind the wheel of a, uh, RS 4.0.
- 3:45And so, you know, we can go anywhere with this.
- 3:46So let's talk about your background.
- 3:48Okay.
- 3:49Well growing up my dad owned my de Muffler franchises.
- 3:54So I was always around shops and my dad thought he was a good driver
- 4:00and uh, he taught me a lot of stuff about how to do oil changes,
- 4:04spark plugs, blah, blah, blah.
- 4:06When I was in college, I had a good friend, Mike Musto, who is a,
- 4:12is at Hemmings right now and he's a big online uh, uh, journalist.
- 4:16He bought a Ducati and I wanted a bike.
- 4:21So after college we lived near each other in Astoria, Queens and I bought
- 4:26a triumph speed triple started riding.
- 4:29Then I bought a second speed triple, and then he really got into cars and
- 4:33he's like, dude, you're a big car guy.
- 4:36You should get a car and go to the track.
- 4:39I said, okay, and I had a BMW 1 35 I with DCT, and I'm a manual guy.
- 4:47Every car I've had has been manual, but for some dumb reason, I got the DCT.
- 4:52So I go to a hooked on driving event at Limerock.
- 4:57You know, coach gets in the right seat, shows me that I
- 5:00have no idea what I'm doing.
- 5:02I have no idea what an apex is.
- 5:03I have no idea about anything.
- 5:06Obviously the first session, that was horrible.
- 5:08Second session, that was horrible.
- 5:10Third session, things started to click a little bit at Limerock,
- 5:14and by the end of the day, I mean I was so much faster and hooked.
- 5:18That was towards the end of the season.
- 5:21So over the winter, I was talking to Musto and a couple other people and
- 5:25I was like, look, I don't like this.
- 5:26BMW, what do I get?
- 5:29I want something really fast and stupid.
- 5:31So the 2013 Shelby GT 500 came out.
- 5:37Yeah.
- 5:38That's about as fast and stupid as you can get.
- 5:40I know, man.
- 5:41And I put a Ford cap back racing exhaust on it and 662
- 5:47horsepower, 631 pounds of torque.
- 5:50It was a beast, but it's not a track toy.
- 5:54I went with hooked on driving to New Jersey Motorsport.
- 5:58It was Thunderbolt and Lightning.
- 5:59I can't remember the setups, but most people, when they go to do de events, they
- 6:05do what, four or five events a season?
- 6:08I did 30.
- 6:11You're drinking from the fire hose.
- 6:13Dude, I was so hooked and I had great coaches and all that, and I was so hooked.
- 6:20The second year I started doing about, it was about 15 events in.
- 6:24Now this is not just hooked on driving.
- 6:26This is like PCA, Audi BMW and all that, and it was all over the northeast,
- 6:31so it was Watkins Glen, Poconos, Monticello, Jersey, and Lime Rock.
- 6:37So I was at Watkins Glen and I can't remember who it was, but
- 6:43it was someone who's the Joe?
- 6:46It was Joe.
- 6:47Uh, do you, you know Joe from Joe.
- 6:49Joe with the nine 11 or with, I think it was Joe with the nine 11.
- 6:53He and, and Scott Scott's the cop.
- 6:56Yeah.
- 6:57Nine 11.
- 6:57So those guys are like, we're watching you on the track, dude, with the Shelby,
- 7:01you're fast as hell going up the S'S on the back street going into the bus stop.
- 7:07You're like driving Miss Daisy and the car just doesn't want to go.
- 7:11Right.
- 7:12I'm like, it's so hard to handle this car.
- 7:14No, that's that's right.
- 7:15It only wanted to go left.
- 7:17You're right about that.
- 7:19Just left.
- 7:20And I was really struggling with the car.
- 7:23Someone said, have you ever driven a Porsche?
- 7:25And I said, no, not really.
- 7:27Like when I was a kid, I drove a 9 44 for about an hour.
- 7:31That as an extra On 16 candles or, or what?
- 7:34Yeah.
- 7:34Right.
- 7:35With uh, what, what was the guy's name on that?
- 7:37The dreamy guy that owned it?
- 7:39Jake,
- 7:42I always think about Molly Ringwald.
- 7:44Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:46So.
- 7:47Someone lent me a, uh, 9, 8, 7 Cayman S at Watkins.
- 7:54They got in the right seat and after a couple laps, I'm starting
- 7:58to get used to the car instantly.
- 7:59It's so easy to drive without even trying because I was only, you know,
- 8:04driving five tenths or six tenths.
- 8:06'cause it's not my car.
- 8:07I was one and a half or two seconds faster than the Shelby.
- 8:10So this is a, a car that's a thousand pounds less if not more, and half
- 8:14the horsepower that started to click.
- 8:17So I sold the Shelby bought a 9, 8, 1 came an s only things I really did
- 8:22to it was add a third radiator pads.
- 8:26What else did I do?
- 8:27Stainless lines, you know, SRF, fluid and all that.
- 8:30Yeah.
- 8:30And boom.
- 8:31And I went out and I was having a blast.
- 8:33And then I hired, what's his name?
- 8:35Uh, Andrew.
- 8:37Andrew, so Andrew became my mentor.
- 8:40I was getting quicker and quicker with the car, and he said, the only way
- 8:44you're really gonna get faster in this car is if you put in a five point.
- 8:49That was where I got to that gray area.
- 8:51Do I wanna turn the car into a ra, you know, into a race car and it's gonna
- 8:55be really annoying on the, on the street, or do I want to not go that way?
- 9:00So I put the harnesses in.
- 9:02I just didn't like it.
- 9:03I started doing like co I was gonna do coil overs and all that kind of stuff.
- 9:07It, it just turned it into a complete awesome track car.
- 9:11But not a street car.
- 9:12So I capped it at that point.
- 9:15Let's pause there before you transition out of the Cayman, because I think that's
- 9:19right around the time that you and I met.
- 9:21Were you already instructing at that point when you were in the
- 9:24Cayman or was that just before?
- 9:26Yeah, I was instructing.
- 9:27Yeah.
- 9:27So then we were in the instructor court together, but then we started hanging
- 9:30out at that first event at Palmer when I had the BMW and we were paddocked all
- 9:35there, all miserable together at Palmer.
- 9:37And then, you know, things continued from there because then we continued
- 9:40to work together as group leads.
- 9:42And then I was the interim CI for a while and all that back and
- 9:44forth kind of stuff right there.
- 9:46So you transitioned out of that, came in and unexpectedly went into a mini.
- 9:54It's a fun wheel drive.
- 9:55So, so here we go.
- 9:57So Palmer was interesting because.
- 10:00I went to it, I've never been on the track before.
- 10:03Have no idea about that track and that that track is no joke.
- 10:07Yeah.
- 10:07And you really gotta pay attention at, at Palmer.
- 10:10So they're like, okay, you're gonna instruct.
- 10:12And I'm like, I don't even know where the apexes are.
- 10:14I have no idea.
- 10:15So Jay takes me out and I do a lead follow for like, I don't know, 20 minutes.
- 10:19He's like, you got it.
- 10:20I'm like, yeah, I, I think I got it.
- 10:23Yeah.
- 10:23'cause I remember you were coming up to me going, what are you doing in turn?
- 10:25Whatever.
- 10:25And I'm like, I dunno.
- 10:26It's my, it's my first time here.
- 10:27How the hell do I know What the hell doing?
- 10:30Thank God that the, the student I had was completely like, such a beginner.
- 10:35Yeah.
- 10:36That, you know, I looked like a pro and I had no idea what I was doing.
- 10:40See listeners fake it till you make it as a coach.
- 10:43That's, that's the mantra.
- 10:44And Jay Teper actually qualified.
- 10:48Mike Musto to be an instructor back in the day.
- 10:52And coincidentally, he was the, uh, Jay qualified me to be an instructor
- 10:56with hooked on Driving and stuff.
- 10:57So, you know, he, he, it was fine.
- 11:00I mean, that's a great track.
- 11:01I really love the elevation changes and, and the, and all that.
- 11:05So anyway, what happened was, I worked for 12, almost 12 years,
- 11:11I worked for Harvey Weinstein.
- 11:13Ooh.
- 11:14Ooh.
- 11:15I mean, I was doing, you know, behind the scenes movie stuff.
- 11:18And when that started to go downhill, this was all before the whole Me Too movement.
- 11:26The company was sinking.
- 11:28We had no idea what was really going on.
- 11:30I got laid off.
- 11:32Oh, wow.
- 11:32And, um, so it was re it's really hard in the film industry.
- 11:37To get a position at my level in New York, because we were the big
- 11:42boys, the bad boys on the block in New York after that went tits up.
- 11:47The, all the little companies just weren't paying what I,
- 11:50what I'm used to getting paid.
- 11:51That's the whole reason why I moved out here.
- 11:54So when I had the Mini Cooper and I was doing all that stuff with
- 11:57hooked on driving, that was the, what's the word I'm looking for?
- 12:01Uh, I was in purgatory.
- 12:03Um, like I didn't, I I, I couldn't afford the Porsche.
- 12:07I, you know, I had no money coming in, but I had, my daily driver was
- 12:12this Mini Cooper, it was like a 2015 Cooper s and I was not a big fan of it.
- 12:17The fifteens, like the newer ones are bloated.
- 12:20They're completely numb and front wheel drive.
- 12:23So, um, you also had an Acura in there too, didn't you?
- 12:27That's my daily driver, dude.
- 12:28It's a, a 2005 Acura, TSX, uh, six speed.
- 12:34I put Conies on it, Coney yellows on it, pads, and it's a hoot.
- 12:41I drove that in 42 hours from New York to LA Wow.
- 12:47With a, with a friend.
- 12:48Not, but you had it on track as well, right?
- 12:50Or was there another Integra in the mix there?
- 12:52As from what I remember, wow.
- 12:53I think I took the TSX, I never had an Integra.
- 12:56I think I took the TSX once or twice on the track, but the
- 12:59car has 150,000 miles on it.
- 13:02I wasn't gonna push it.
- 13:04I got to drive a lot of other people's cars, you know, and
- 13:07uh, that was a lot of fun.
- 13:08But as you know, there's something to be said that driving someone
- 13:12else's car is a nerve wracking Yes.
- 13:15Experience.
- 13:16So I'm very, very safe on the track.
- 13:19I've seen some crazy shit.
- 13:21I have a video actually, I should send you.
- 13:23I was in a, what was the last gen vet, the zero seven.
- 13:28The, the C seven.
- 13:31C seven, uh, I was in a c The good looking.
- 13:33The good looking one.
- 13:33Yeah, the good looking one.
- 13:35Yeah.
- 13:35The new one is, so I'm not a fan of it.
- 13:38Uh, so we were going down the front, the front street at, uh, Watkins Glen.
- 13:44There's a guy in a Mustang in front of us, and he's putting along at like a hundred.
- 13:50And so were you ha were you immediately having flashbacks going?
- 13:53He's not gonna make it through the bus stop.
- 13:54I already know this.
- 13:55I already know this, but, but like, so, and he's got, you know,
- 13:58he's got the chrome rims and all that stuff, so I'm like, oh boy.
- 14:02So in front of him is an S 2000 trying to pass him on the,
- 14:07on the inside, on the right.
- 14:09So, oh, I remember this incident.
- 14:11Yeah.
- 14:12So he gives him the point by the guy goes and he raises him to turn one and
- 14:19they hit, I think the Mustang did a 180.
- 14:23So did the, uh, the S 2000 and I'm watching the whole thing happen and
- 14:29you know, as you know, you get that spidey sense when something bad's
- 14:32gonna happen 15 seconds out, I'm like, something bad's gonna happen dude.
- 14:37And sure enough, it was, uh, that was the only contact I've ever seen with
- 14:43all the years of being on the track.
- 14:45It only takes one stupid thing to ruin everyone's day.
- 14:49Thank God the David wasn't too bad on the cars.
- 14:51Eric, was that the same event where two Miatas not to be named, were involved in
- 14:59some, uh, Miata on Miata concept negative?
- 15:01And Mike Crushfield knows exactly this situation.
- 15:03This was the weekend of the MSF level two training.
- 15:07Oh, that, that, okay, now I get it.
- 15:08So you and I and the rest, half of GTMs coaches were in, were in with
- 15:13Ross Bentley getting trained and we heard about it 'cause it had happened
- 15:16while everybody else was on track.
- 15:17Paul, let's go back to your, your history, your car history a little bit here.
- 15:21Yeah.
- 15:21So when you were a kid, I mean your dad owned a shop, what were some of
- 15:25the posters you had on your wall?
- 15:26What were some of your dream cars?
- 15:28I had the Kosh, you know, I had my man, my man.
- 15:31See, see?
- 15:32Petrolhead of a certain age all had kunts on their wall.
- 15:36I'm telling you.
- 15:37Had the Kosh, you know, I think it was a white one too.
- 15:40I think I had tester on there.
- 15:43I mean, everybody had a test.
- 15:44My, I didn't have the Kosh, I had the tester.
- 15:47Yeah, I had that.
- 15:48And then I only had like one.
- 15:51Other poster, and I can't remember what it was.
- 15:53Was it a Fiero by chance you took my, I knew it.
- 15:56I knew that was coming up with the speakers in the
- 15:59rear, in the, in the headrest.
- 16:01Was it a, was it a Fiero with a big breasted blonde on the hood?
- 16:04No, but I, or on the front or Heather?
- 16:06It was Heather Thomas.
- 16:07No, it was Heather Locklear, whoever was on the fall.
- 16:11Uh, my, oh, that was Heather Locklear?
- 16:12Yeah.
- 16:13Oh, Heather Locklear.
- 16:14It was like her on like a, like a, like a, a TransAm, yeah.
- 16:18Oh yeah.
- 16:18TransAm or whatever.
- 16:19Musto has, uh, the exact smoke in the Bandit TransAm.
- 16:24He got rid of that and just got like a funky blue TransAm, a light blue, almost
- 16:30like a baby type, baby blue type thing.
- 16:33And those things are great.
- 16:34They're, I mean, back in the day when we were kids, we thought they were so fast.
- 16:38I think the car has like 180 horsepower or something like that.
- 16:41Yeah, I Out of seven liters.
- 16:43Right.
- 16:43It's like ridiculous though.
- 16:45So you get those burnouts for the movie.
- 16:47I got to drive one of those, A buddy of mine bought one for
- 16:50literally 50 bucks in high school.
- 16:52He bought a, it was a Navy blue TransAm with the screaming chicken
- 16:55on the hood and the whole nine yards.
- 16:57And he rebuilt the motor.
- 16:57He went to auto diesel college and then some places down in North
- 17:00Carolina to learn all that stuff.
- 17:02And I remember helping him put it in.
- 17:04And after we got it built, we drove it and I was.
- 17:06First it was a really difficult car to drive, but that was the
- 17:09first time I learned that valuable lesson of never drive your heroes
- 17:13because you will be disappointed.
- 17:14Right.
- 17:14You'll be disappointed.
- 17:15Yeah.
- 17:16Even before I moved to LA I've been fortunate enough to go to,
- 17:19um, Monterey for the Pebble Beach.
- 17:23Oh, nice.
- 17:23The whole week, you know, I would stay at a friend's house and stuff like that.
- 17:27So saying that I used to drive so many of these cars around Monterey, so I drove.
- 17:34Do you know who Alex Roy is?
- 17:36He's another guy who did like a Cannonball record.
- 17:39He's done, he did a cannonball, I think in a Morgan.
- 17:42So he does like crazy shit.
- 17:44Anyway, he had like a Citron, Citron Citron, an old one with the
- 17:48airbags, like the seventies one, and he was like, so like a, a devo.
- 17:52I, I guess it's like a, or Ds, the one that looks like a water bug or pill bug.
- 17:56Is it in your Instagram feed?
- 17:58'cause I think it was a Ds.
- 18:00Um, I hate that car.
- 18:01God, I hated it.
- 18:03But what was really weird about it was either the clutch pe no, it was the
- 18:08brake pedal, or the gas pedal wasn't a typical pedal, it was just a button.
- 18:14You just hit the button.
- 18:16So now self French, dude, I'm driving this car.
- 18:19It's got a gated shifter and I'm driving it through Carmel.
- 18:23Okay?
- 18:24So now I have like three F Forty's behind me.
- 18:27I have Mike Musto and a Daytona in front of me.
- 18:31Millions of dollars of cars all around me.
- 18:33And I'm on a hill like this and I'm like, dude, I'm gonna hit that F 40.
- 18:37And everyone's sitting there laughing their ass off knowing that I'm sweating.
- 18:41You know, my balls off.
- 18:42Yeah, I was, I was fortunate enough to drive a lot of these cars and
- 18:46stuff, but again, going back to.
- 18:49Driving someone else's car.
- 18:50It's not fun for me.
- 18:51No, I feel you.
- 18:52And, and you know, I don't know what it is.
- 18:54Maybe, maybe it's your, your rugged New York charm that people
- 18:57just hand you their keys and that maybe you're just trustworthy.
- 18:59That's what it's, right.
- 19:00Yeah.
- 19:00I, I think it has a lot to do with, I'm, I'm, I'm not the
- 19:03fastest driver on the track and all that, but I am extremely safe.
- 19:07My situational awareness is very good.
- 19:10I learned from the best and I'm still learning every day.
- 19:14I was absolutely.
- 19:14Oh, absolutely.
- 19:15I was at Button Willow, uh, yesterday, uh, which is a, a racetrack, uh, about
- 19:20an hour and a half north of here.
- 19:22And I was with, uh, Billy Johnson, pro Driver was hired by Ford Hired, he set
- 19:27up the GT 500, the new GT 500 Oh, wow.
- 19:31Before it went on sale.
- 19:32He helped develop it.
- 19:33And the Ford GT.
- 19:35And did Laman four times in the gt.
- 19:40Wow.
- 19:40This guy is no joke.
- 19:41He's like probably one of the best drivers I've ever seen
- 19:44spending 10 minutes with him.
- 19:45He showed me how to correctly heel toe.
- 19:48Nice.
- 19:48He's like, you're doing it all wrong.
- 19:49You're doing it all wrong, dude.
- 19:50He's like, you suck at it.
- 19:52This is why.
- 19:53And um, I soak it in and I was fortunate enough to be around Jay Tepper, you
- 19:59know, Mike Arrigo, Brock Hs, Jr. Solomon Rosenthal, Billy Johnson and all that.
- 20:06And all.
- 20:06And Mike Musto.
- 20:08And I, throughout the years, had amazing coaches.
- 20:11That's really the secret sauce, right, that most people forget, is that
- 20:15when you go to these de events and you spend a lot of time, you are the
- 20:19culmination of all your instructors.
- 20:21You pick something up from all of them, you pull a thread, you're
- 20:24not gonna take away everything.
- 20:26You're gonna find the stuff that works for you, and then
- 20:28that becomes your driving style.
- 20:31And then as you become a coach, you try to instill some of the core values
- 20:35and things to other people, so then they inherit some of your racing genes
- 20:38or whatever you want, call it, it.
- 20:39It's an interesting ecosystem, the way it works.
- 20:42And we're all a byproduct of all the people that we've had experienced with.
- 20:46Absolutely.
- 20:47And I love paying it forward.
- 20:49You know this, when you're in the car, you, when your student has that aha
- 20:54moment, that moment of clarity where it clicks and they do it correctly
- 20:59and they're happy and you know they're happy and they're, and they get it.
- 21:02It's great feeling.
- 21:04I never thought that I would be a coach.
- 21:08It's, I never thought my personality, 'cause I'm a New Yorker, I, I don't
- 21:12have the patience for a lot of stuff.
- 21:17Listen here, wise guy, you're doing it wrong.
- 21:21You know this what you gotta do.
- 21:23But I was able to do it and just mellow out.
- 21:27Honestly, with all the students I've had, I'd say there's only about.
- 21:32Two or three that I couldn't get to.
- 21:36Like, they were just not having it and they didn't, we didn't click.
- 21:41But everyone else, I love it and I love it when, and this happens off
- 21:46often when I'll get like a random text from someone, and this actually
- 21:51happened a couple months ago.
- 21:52Like, Hey man, how are you?
- 21:53And I'm like, who, who are you?
- 21:55And they're like, you instructed me at, you know, Pocono
- 21:58like for the whole weekend.
- 21:59And, and I did this and I did that.
- 22:01And I'm like, that's amazing.
- 22:03I can't remember who you are, but I'm glad that you reached out.
- 22:07'cause he wanted to buy a Cayman and, uh, so he had questions on
- 22:11what to buy and blah, blah, blah.
- 22:13And I just bought, I'm back in the game, baby.
- 22:15I just bought a Cayman.
- 22:17Oh, nice.
- 22:18Yeah.
- 22:18Which, which, which generation of Cayman.
- 22:21'cause there's several now a 9, 8, 7, which is first gen. It's, it's a 2007.
- 22:26I found it with 33,000 miles on it.
- 22:29Wow.
- 22:30Yeah.
- 22:31So it's a great car.
- 22:32I actually prefer it driving wise over the 9 8 1.
- 22:36It's a more analog feeling car.
- 22:39It's great.
- 22:39I just put a cap back exhaust on it, a short shifter, and I'm
- 22:43flying through the canyons now.
- 22:45So Why, why the Caymans over the nine 11?
- 22:49The nine elevens that I've driven are.
- 22:52My favorite are the 9 9 7 generation.
- 22:559 9 7 9 9 7 2. Mm-hmm.
- 22:58Uh uh.
- 22:59You know an S right?
- 23:01My favorite, what I really want is a GTS.
- 23:03Are you familiar what the differences are?
- 23:06Yeah.
- 23:06The two inches in the back, you know, so I love that big ass in the back.
- 23:11It's the hips are amazing.
- 23:12Gotta love a big ass.
- 23:13Yeah.
- 23:14It's a 70, I mean, that's what it says on his license plate.
- 23:16Just like Kramer.
- 23:17Right ass man.
- 23:19Enthusia ass man ass man.
- 23:22It's a $75,000 car.
- 23:24Yeah.
- 23:25With thousand miles on it.
- 23:26So what I like about the Cayman, I think reflects off my personality
- 23:32where I like to be safe.
- 23:33And the Cayman is such a point and shoot car.
- 23:37There's no drama to it.
- 23:38It's very hard to get the back end to come out when you're pushing it.
- 23:42When it does come out, you really gotta know what you're doing to get it back in.
- 23:46But it's so hard to really mess up in that car.
- 23:50And it's small, which I love, and it's quick.
- 23:54It's got, with the exhaust and all that 310 horsepower
- 23:58at 2,900 pounds, it's a blast.
- 24:01Yeah.
- 24:01You know, it's not a fast car, it's a quick car.
- 24:04It's a little scalpel.
- 24:05Now, why not the nine 11?
- 24:07The ones that I want are a lot of money.
- 24:09I will only get an SI will only get.
- 24:12A 9, 9 7 or maybe a 9, 9 3, which is kind of archaic if, if
- 24:18you guys know that kind of car.
- 24:19It's archaic.
- 24:20Yeah, it looks beautiful.
- 24:21But inside looks like it's from the sixties.
- 24:24The nine nine ones I, I believe are the next gen after 9, 9, 7 are big.
- 24:30They're grand tours now, not sports cars.
- 24:32Yeah, they're GT and, and I mean they're not as big as like the
- 24:36BMWs, you know the m threes?
- 24:38No, no.
- 24:39Nothing's as big as the M eight.
- 24:40Let's be real that thing's like a school bus.
- 24:43Oh man.
- 24:43So I really like the nine nine sevens and I probably will get one, you know, uh,
- 24:49that gts, that's my unicorn right now.
- 24:52I'll get it over time, but.
- 24:54For now, the, the 9 8 7 s, it's a $30,000 car.
- 24:59And if you look at it, you know, people who don't know Porsches
- 25:03think it's a 50 or $60,000 car.
- 25:05And the car's in immaculate condition.
- 25:07And I love it.
- 25:08I, every time I get in it, it always puts a smile on my face, especially
- 25:12after a cold start, you know, it's a great car man for 30 grand.
- 25:16Now, saying that the roads here in, in Southern California are the best I've
- 25:23ever driven on the, the canyon roads.
- 25:26Well, coming from New York, well, yeah, well, in New York I would go up to
- 25:30like Bear Mountain and stuff like that.
- 25:32And there's like, you know, it's like a three mile ride
- 25:35up and down and that was it.
- 25:37You know, we had some nice back roads in Connecticut and stuff, but they were
- 25:41all, for the most part, uh, residential.
- 25:44So it was, you know how it is, you really gotta take it easy on those roads.
- 25:49Blind driveways, what have.
- 25:51Here, the canyon roads, like Angela's Crest, the Santa Monica
- 25:56Mountains by Malibu and all that.
- 25:58These roads are legendary and they're so fast.
- 26:02If you screw up, you'll die.
- 26:04You'll fly off a cliff again, being safe, I have fun, but I'm not pushing it.
- 26:10Like some of these people that I've watched, these roads
- 26:13are hundreds of miles long.
- 26:15Even the PCH is gorgeous and it's a lot of fun.
- 26:17I mean, not nearly as fast or technical, but if you're out that way and you wanna
- 26:22go for a drive, just jump on the PCH.
- 26:24Absolutely.
- 26:25So when I'm going to Malibu to the mountains, I'll take PCH up.
- 26:31For about 15 or 20 miles, and it's a beautiful scenic,
- 26:35sweeping, you know, sweepers.
- 26:37It's 50, 60 miles an hour because there's a lot of cops there.
- 26:41As soon as you turn right and go up the hills, it turns
- 26:43into, uh, like Tour de France.
- 26:46It's just like this for, you'll see signs, you know, like the, like squiggly Yeah.
- 26:51Next 30 miles or something like that.
- 26:53Yeah.
- 26:53You're just like, so it's so is is Mulholland Drive included on that?
- 26:59Mulholland is great.
- 27:00There, there, there, there's some houses on Mulholland though, aren't there?
- 27:03Yeah, Mulholland is, it's a beautiful road, but it's extremely narrow and
- 27:09there's a lot of blind curves on it.
- 27:11And And is it as creepy as they make it out to be in the movies?
- 27:14Oh yeah.
- 27:15The Lynch film.
- 27:16Yeah.
- 27:16It's creepier at night.
- 27:17Especially, that's another thing in LA everything is pitch dark.
- 27:20Like there's like one lamp post, light post every like half a mile.
- 27:25Mulholland is fun.
- 27:27It's better on a bike because you have a lot more maneuverability.
- 27:31Mulholland Highway is a bit more open and uh, that's fun.
- 27:35There's tons of stuff.
- 27:36There's one curve, it's called like the dragon something.
- 27:40It's a famous curve that goes uphill and people are always hanging out
- 27:44there watching motorcyclists crash.
- 27:47Yeah, I've seen that.
- 27:47I think I've seen the videos.
- 27:48I saw a BW flip over or something there once.
- 27:51Yeah, it happens like daily and it's all because of the riders not looking ahead.
- 27:57Yeah.
- 27:58And that's all it is.
- 27:59Which is something that we, we basically repeat constantly.
- 28:03Get your eyes up, be situationally aware.
- 28:06Yeah, right.
- 28:07Look ahead.
- 28:08Yeah.
- 28:09So it's been like a few years since I've actually been on the track.
- 28:13So those daily rituals, you know, when you're on the track, look up, look ahead.
- 28:18They haven't faded completely, but when I'm driving on the roads, I have
- 28:23to keep reminding myself, now look up, look up, look far as far as ahead.
- 28:27Look through the apex, look through the turn, look through apex, look
- 28:30at that car that just, you know, a half a mile up and stuff like that.
- 28:33And it's great because it's embedded in my brain.
- 28:36It's, it's it's muscle memory.
- 28:38Exactly.
- 28:39But I still to this day have to remind myself to look up because you get lazy.
- 28:44You know, you, you just look at the car in front of you and react with them,
- 28:48and that's the worst thing you can do.
- 28:50We touched on your current dream car being the 9, 9 7, but what was
- 28:54the dream car when you were a kid?
- 28:56It was definitely the Kosh and the, because of Miami Vice.
- 28:59It was the, uh, the, actually I perf, I really liked the day,
- 29:04the Daytona that he drove before.
- 29:07Yeah, he got the tester.
- 29:08But yeah, it was the white tester until I found out that there were fake.
- 29:13Yeah, they were, all of 'em were, yeah, all, they're all like, like
- 29:16Corvette engines or something like that on and, and all that.
- 29:19And that kind of turned me off.
- 29:20But it was definitely Ferrari.
- 29:22Porsche was, uh, I love the nine 17 and uh, that was just a beautiful looking
- 29:28car, but I would have to say the Kosh, it was definitely because of the doors.
- 29:32And uh, so do you think that was the sexiest car of all time?
- 29:35Or do you have something that's even further out?
- 29:37It's still hold up, dude.
- 29:38It, like Matt Farrah has one, he's got like a red one with gold wheels on it.
- 29:43And I like was hanging out, looking at it and I'm like, this car is amazing.
- 29:47And then the reality kicks in because it's pretty funny.
- 29:50You can't see behind you.
- 29:52No at all.
- 29:53So when he had to reverse the car at Rad Wood, do you know what Rad Wood is?
- 29:57Yes.
- 29:58So there was Rad Wood at the Peterson, which is a big famous car museum here.
- 30:03Yep.
- 30:03In la He was backing it in and he had the door open, his ass out of the
- 30:09car, goes backwards to go through.
- 30:12And I'm like, that really sucks, dude.
- 30:14Yeah.
- 30:14'cause the, the side mirrors are useless too.
- 30:16So it's the only way to see.
- 30:18Well, how does Mad Farah fit in one of those?
- 30:20Isn't he like 6 3, 6 4?
- 30:22He's about six three, I would say about 280 pounds.
- 30:2670 pounds.
- 30:26So he, he's a little smaller than I am.
- 30:28I don't understand how he fits in a car like that.
- 30:30I don't know.
- 30:31He just bought a 3 0 8 I think.
- 30:33Yeah.
- 30:34Now there's a car that, oh man.
- 30:37The Magnum PI was a 3 28 though.
- 30:40No, a 3 0 8 GTS.
- 30:41And then, then the later ones he had a 3 0 8 GTS qv.
- 30:44But the four valve head, so, and I heard you like destroy the clutches.
- 30:48Dude, those were his car.
- 30:49Those were Tom Sellecks cars.
- 30:51Oh, I did not know that.
- 30:52Yeah.
- 30:53And that, so what's really funny is, and I've talked about this before in
- 30:55another episode, there's a crossover he did with Carol Burnett where there's a
- 30:59green one and that was the loaner car because of what you just said, where
- 31:03the clutch was out on the red one.
- 31:05So they gave him this green one and it's like one episode.
- 31:08But yeah, they were all his cars and apparently he bought one for
- 31:11Rick and TC and like everybody and Salt, they were like multiple cars
- 31:14on set and they would use 'em and then, uh, they did a crossover also.
- 31:18This is where I'm nerd now.
- 31:20They did a crossover with, um, Richard Dean Anderson on MacGyver, and he borrowed
- 31:25Tom Sell's car and used it for an episode on the show for whatever stupid reason.
- 31:29You know, those cars are great.
- 31:30I've driven a 3 28.
- 31:32It's much bigger, no more head height than the 3 0 8 does.
- 31:36Mm-hmm.
- 31:36It took a minute to get used to the gated shifter, but I tell you what, man,
- 31:39there is nothing like those high strung Ferrari v eights where it's like, yeah.
- 31:44Where is Red Line?
- 31:45'cause the gauge goes to 12,000 and you're just like, I don't know,
- 31:48somewhere around nine you shift and it doesn't care and they sound glorious.
- 31:53Oh, amazing.
- 31:54And then you, then you realize it's in there sideways and you scratch your head
- 31:57and you're like, wait, it's transverse.
- 31:59You're like, what?
- 32:01So who thought, who thought this was a good idea?
- 32:03Tom Sellick is tall as well.
- 32:05I think he's like 6 3, 6 4.
- 32:07He can't drive that thing with the roof on.
- 32:09That's why they, they could never shoot with the rain or whatever.
- 32:12I think I just put two and two together.
- 32:15I forgot.
- 32:15The reason why I love the Kosh so much and everything comes full circle
- 32:21here is because of Cannonball Run.
- 32:23Yes, yes.
- 32:24So the intro to Cannonball Run, which we all know is the TransAm
- 32:28cop chasing the, uh, the, the Lambo with the two girls in it.
- 32:32And it's.
- 32:33Amazing.
- 32:34And then years later I got to meet Brock h Jr. You know, and, and all that.
- 32:39And telling him that I've watched a Cannonball run 150 times.
- 32:44I know it verbatim.
- 32:46And that was pretty cool.
- 32:47Was that the first one or the second one?
- 32:48Where did the color change on the car?
- 32:51Where they like hosted.
- 32:51That was the second one where they went to the drive through and Yeah.
- 32:54Yeah.
- 32:54They hosed it down and it came out black or went in black,
- 32:57it came out white or whatever.
- 32:59Yeah.
- 32:59That was the second.
- 33:00Well, the second one I wasn't a really big fan of.
- 33:02I'll watch it because you know, it's Burt Reynolds and Doug.
- 33:04Oh yeah, of course.
- 33:06Funny story about Brock h Jr. There's a, a famous guy, he's
- 33:11super rich, has his own racetrack at his house in upstate New York.
- 33:16It's a pretty cool racetrack, and it's, it's a, it's a like crazy
- 33:20that he built a racetrack there.
- 33:22So, Solomon Rosenthal, uh, who's associated with one lap of America, he
- 33:28was doing an event there for veterans.
- 33:31They were doing a TV show for wounded veterans, doing kind of
- 33:35like a marathon with race cars and doing this and doing that.
- 33:39And the segment was them driving.
- 33:42Roush Mustangs.
- 33:44So we had Jack Roush Jr there, Brock h Jr. And a bunch of other people.
- 33:49Solomon called me up and said, listen, would you, could you help out?
- 33:52Uh, we need someone to that knows, you know, working in a hot pit and
- 33:57there's gonna be a lot of people there that have no idea what they're
- 33:59doing, so I need you to supervise it.
- 34:01Said, absolutely.
- 34:02So I did that and then at the end of the day they're like, Hey, if
- 34:06you guys want to take your cars out on the track, go right ahead.
- 34:09So I had my Cayman and I'm going around the track and Brock Yates Jr.
- 34:14Is behind me and a piece of crap.
- 34:17Subaru Outback.
- 34:19Okay.
- 34:21Young in his car and all that.
- 34:23And dude, I am trying to drive quickly and he is right up my butt the whole time.
- 34:30And we get out and he's like, dude, you suck.
- 34:36Busting my chops.
- 34:38And I looked down and he has no shoes on.
- 34:41He's driving barefoot.
- 34:42Did you just, you did that barefoot?
- 34:44He's like, yeah, like I like to drive barefoot.
- 34:47And I'm like, and you were up my butt in a Subaru Outback.
- 34:51That's amazing.
- 34:52He's not the fastest driver in the world now 'cause he's getting up there in age.
- 34:56But he is.
- 34:58One of the smoothest, one of the most consistent drivers I've ever been around.
- 35:02Lots to unpack here.
- 35:03Tons of stories, but let's, let's switch gears for a minute.
- 35:05So coming from the East coast and going west.
- 35:09Yeah.
- 35:09And I'm assuming you've been out to the west coast before
- 35:11traveling, but now you've, you've changed residency and all that.
- 35:14The car culture on the East Coast is very different than the West Coast.
- 35:18Like, you know, we have our stance bros. There's a lot of autocross out here.
- 35:23There's a lot of tracks, a lot of famous tracks on the East coast, like
- 35:26you mentioned, lime Rock, Watkins Glen, VIR, road, Atlanta, Sebring,
- 35:30the list goes on and on and on.
- 35:32The track culture in California is very different, but also the
- 35:35car culture's extremely different.
- 35:37So what have you experienced now being there, especially in Southern California
- 35:41and being in the midst of, you know, some of these great fabricators and, and
- 35:45cars and car shows and things like that.
- 35:47What's it like from my limited experience here, because I've only been here for
- 35:52about, what, two and a half years.
- 35:54One of 'em has been stuck in my house like everyone else.
- 35:59So what I've noticed is I think car culture was created here, you know, in
- 36:05like the fifties and sixties and all that.
- 36:07With hot rods and all that.
- 36:09You have that element.
- 36:10Okay?
- 36:11You have cars and coffee and car meets.
- 36:15There's 50 of them a day.
- 36:17Okay?
- 36:17It's insane because the weather here is always, for the most part, great.
- 36:22You can always go to some sort of car show, some club, doing some drive.
- 36:29All that and it's amazing.
- 36:30It's very different than what I'm used to in the Northeast, which was kind of
- 36:37the car shows for the most part were high-end car shows at like Greenwich and
- 36:42the Greenwich Concourse and, and the big event at Lime Rock where they had like
- 36:47everyone's car around the whole track.
- 36:49That's like, what, a mile and a half long.
- 36:52Here it's more just kind of like impromptu, A lot of them are, and.
- 36:57There's a lot of money here.
- 36:59A lot of money.
- 37:00So you'll go to a car show and you'll see $10 million Ferraris and
- 37:05Bugattis and you know, uh, NDAs or whatever, like all this crazy stuff.
- 37:11Mike Musto told me this when I moved here.
- 37:14He said, listen, you're gonna come across a lot of people that
- 37:17you're just not gonna wanna hang.
- 37:19And you know, they have more money and all they do is show
- 37:22off their cars, which is cool.
- 37:24But I like hanging out with people that go to the track.
- 37:28Wanna drive.
- 37:30And, and have that kind of personality.
- 37:32It's been difficult to find those people.
- 37:36Honestly.
- 37:36I just started finding those kind of people that I like going out on
- 37:42the canyons with and driving and knowing that they're not gonna do
- 37:46anything stupid and try to, you know, have huge egos and stuff like that.
- 37:51And that's what I gravitate towards.
- 37:53So it's great when, just like you guys, it'll be a Sunday morning.
- 37:58It'll be, I'll meet someone in Venice Beach at seven o'clock in the morning.
- 38:03We'll go up PCH, we'll go in the mountains for a good hour and a half, two
- 38:07hours, and then go to this tiny little.
- 38:11Restaurant that's outdoors that Steve McQueen used to hang out at all the time.
- 38:16You know, it's called the Old Place, have breakfast and then you're
- 38:19home by like 11 and that's it.
- 38:22And that's great for me.
- 38:24The track culture here is pretty cool.
- 38:27People go to the track here all the time.
- 38:30The thing is, is that there's only really like two or three tracks around la I
- 38:35think it's Button Willow, which I was at, which was about an hour and a half away.
- 38:40There's Adams Motor Sports Park, which I've run at.
- 38:42Adams is out in Riverside, so if you ever in Riverside wanna try Riverside.
- 38:45Yeah, if you wanna try something different.
- 38:46I've never had, there's Willow Springs, which is super famous and maybe like,
- 38:51and there's like the Porsche Experience Center, which is not really the same.
- 38:55Yeah, there's one other one, but that's about it.
- 38:57So, everywhere else, like, you know, if you really want to go to serious
- 39:02racetracks besides Bun Willow, you have to go north to like Laguna,
- 39:06Sega, uh, Sonoma and all that.
- 39:09And that's cool because Musto, my good friend for 30
- 39:12years lives in San Francisco.
- 39:14So now that I have the Cayman, I'm like getting the itch
- 39:16again, you know what I mean?
- 39:17And I'm like, let's go to Laguna and stuff.
- 39:20And that's inevitable.
- 39:22I'll be doing that soon enough.
- 39:23I'll be living vicariously through you, Paul.
- 39:25So just like, dude.
- 39:26No, we're gonna, we're gonna be visiting is what you, what you meant to say.
- 39:29Absolutely.
- 39:29Dude, I've got an extra bedroom.
- 39:31You guys can crash here.
- 39:32No problem.
- 39:33Yeah, the car culture here is.
- 39:35Amazing.
- 39:36So you'll be driving down the street and you, you'll stop and a, I don't know,
- 39:42some crazy cougar or, or, or barracuda or, I'm glad we're still talking about cars.
- 39:49I just wanted to make sure.
- 39:50Yeah, I was, I was thinking that, I was wondering.
- 39:52That's a whole other conversation, uh, altogether here.
- 39:56It's insane.
- 39:56A cougar in a barracuda.
- 39:58A cougar in a, isn't that that song by heart, right?
- 40:02I mean, so, so yeah, there's.
- 40:06Every kind of car, you'll see everything around here.
- 40:09A lot of 'em are more bespoke than like what we're used to on the east
- 40:12coast, which all the stance bros. Where everybody's putting 'em on bags and
- 40:16doing whatever they're doing and they're very flashy and very well put together.
- 40:20But I, out west I see, I feel, still feel that there's a lot of custom
- 40:25fabrication going on to make everybody's experience in car very unique.
- 40:30Absolutely.
- 40:30So a good friend of mine, uh, her name is Katherine Sutton.
- 40:34When I was at Weinstein, I was her client for like 10 years.
- 40:39She worked at Technicolor, which is a big vendor for the film industry.
- 40:43We hit it off really well.
- 40:44She's super sweet.
- 40:45She's got a 3 56 and a Cayman just like mine.
- 40:50So when I moved here, I lived like five minutes from her and she's on
- 40:54the board of the Peterson Museum.
- 40:57You know, the doors swung wide open and I got to tour Outlaws
- 41:02the Outlaws, you know, rod Emery?
- 41:03I was at his facility.
- 41:05Peterson had an event there.
- 41:07So yeah, I got to watch the fabrications there.
- 41:10I've seen a lot of, uh, the singers, Porsches, which are gorgeous.
- 41:13They're out here.
- 41:14Have you been by Magnus Walker?
- 41:16His, his shop?
- 41:18I haven't, but I see him at least once every other week.
- 41:22At some cart thing?
- 41:24Yeah, all the time.
- 41:25All the time.
- 41:26So that road that I was telling you about, Angela's Crest, there's a really
- 41:30famous restaurant called Newcombs Ranch.
- 41:34You're going up these mountains for 30 miles and there's
- 41:37nothing there except mountains.
- 41:39And then all of a sudden there's this tiny little restaurant in the
- 41:42middle of nowhere, and that's the meeting point for cars and coffees,
- 41:47guys riding bikes, what have you.
- 41:49It's closed because of COVID, but it's got a huge parking lot.
- 41:55And I was just there two Fridays ago.
- 41:58I drove up at seven in the morning to get my Yaya's out and who's there
- 42:02is Magnus and he's hanging out, he hangs out all at all these events.
- 42:07So you see him all the time.
- 42:08I like what he does with his nine elevens and he's kind of like a singer light.
- 42:12I, I would, would say.
- 42:14Yeah.
- 42:14Yeah.
- 42:14I, I, I, I actually was contemplating talking to him saying, what
- 42:18could you do with a Cayman?
- 42:20You know, and I just like, I'm curious to see what he would say on it.
- 42:24He actually just bought a 9 9 1 Turbo that had like 150,000 miles on it or something
- 42:32like that, but he got like 50 or 60 grand.
- 42:36So, uh, that's, that's a deal and a half.
- 42:39And I think that's like, its first modern nine 11.
- 42:42So do you just see it as different, better?
- 42:44Do you miss the east coast ways or is it just the whole new chapter?
- 42:49Yeah, I miss certain things about New York and the Northeast.
- 42:52Uh, obviously the, the main thing is my family and my friends.
- 42:56I, I miss that tremendously.
- 42:58You know, I'm trying to make new friends out here.
- 43:01Being stuck in my house for a year doesn't really help.
- 43:04The Cayman does help.
- 43:06That's a nice little gateway to, to the Porsche community.
- 43:10Well, I think it also brings you back to your East coast roots.
- 43:12'cause you had one when you were over here.
- 43:14So you kind of get back in that mindset.
- 43:16There's a bit more culture in the Northeast than la.
- 43:20There is culture in la, don't get me wrong.
- 43:23LA is a gigantic city.
- 43:25It's huge.
- 43:26I still get lost.
- 43:27I use Waze every day.
- 43:29But you have to search for some really cool stuff while New York,
- 43:36maybe I'm just being biased.
- 43:37'cause in every it's 'cause in New York, everybody's got a guy.
- 43:40They got a guy that knows a guy and they know the place to go.
- 43:43People, people have guys here.
- 43:44They're, they're funny.
- 43:45Someone just said, I got a guy the other day and I started cracking up.
- 43:49I'm like, wow, that's so New York.
- 43:51Yeah, the people are nice here.
- 43:53Everyone is throttled back here for the most part.
- 43:56Being a New Yorker, I was coming full tilt boogie.
- 44:00People were scared.
- 44:01So they're like, you, you gotta chill, dude.
- 44:04Like smoke a joint.
- 44:05It's legal here and, and, uh, relax.
- 44:08People are nice.
- 44:09The food is great.
- 44:10It's much more health orientated here due to the weather.
- 44:14I'm not hibernating like I did in New York since I moved here.
- 44:17I lost like 35 pounds.
- 44:20And, uh, the tacos here are frigging great.
- 44:23That's what everybody says, right?
- 44:25The best tacos.
- 44:26I can't imagine why I'll say.
- 44:27So let's shift into third and let's talk a little bit about Hollywood, right?
- 44:30So you don't have to go into all the gory details.
- 44:33I think some of the listeners would love to know if you worked on anything that
- 44:36maybe they've seen that was popular.
- 44:37Anything related to cars.
- 44:39All right, well, we'll start with like movies that I
- 44:41worked on that involved cars.
- 44:44I would say, if you guys remember the Quentin Tarantino Robert Rodriguez
- 44:49double feature called Grindhouse?
- 44:51Yes.
- 44:52Uh, the one with Kurt Russell driving the Nova.
- 44:54With the big duck on the, uh, so I worked on that film.
- 44:58That was like one of the first films I worked on when I started at Weinstein.
- 45:02The Tarantino film is called Death Proof.
- 45:05Yes.
- 45:05That was amazing.
- 45:06And we posters and one of the cool posters on it is it's very
- 45:10retro, sixties, seventies, and it's just the hood of the Nova.
- 45:15And so I worked on that film trying to think of other car stuff, uh, or
- 45:20even notable films that, that people were like, oh man, you worked on that.
- 45:23I, I just saw on your Instagram you worked on, uh, sound of
- 45:27Metal, which I, I haven't watched.
- 45:29It's on my list to watch like really soon.
- 45:31Yeah, that's a really cool movie.
- 45:32So the company that I work for now has a Canadian, a sister, Canadian
- 45:38company, and we had the rights to sound of metal for Canada.
- 45:43So I was dealing with the producers every day and Amazon and all that.
- 45:48I got all the materials to successfully market.
- 45:51And release the film in Canada.
- 45:53That movie was a pain in the butt to deal with because the movie is about a drummer
- 45:59losing his hearing and what they decided to do, you know, closed caption files
- 46:05where you could turn it on or turn it off.
- 46:07Yeah.
- 46:08They wanted it burned in, so it's their 24 7 because it's, you know
- 46:14about people losing their hearing.
- 46:16They have to use the closed caption, so they're trying to
- 46:18get the point across Awareness.
- 46:19Yeah.
- 46:19Everything was up the 25th hour to get this done.
- 46:22That's not an easy task to do.
- 46:25I'm trying to think of other films.
- 46:26Silver Linings, playbook, the reader, the artist, do they all start with the.
- 46:32Oh yeah, the King speech.
- 46:35That was a good one.
- 46:35I saw that one.
- 46:36Yeah, that was a good flick And glorious bastards.
- 46:39I saw that too.
- 46:41That's the second Tarantino flick.
- 46:44It was Inglorious Django and the Hateful eight Oh oh wow.
- 46:50Which is Western.
- 46:51And then, um, yeah, and then death proof and Grindhouse and uh, nice
- 46:57Grindhouse thing was a. Huge issue.
- 47:01So the movie was about three and a half hours long.
- 47:04It was a double feature, right?
- 47:06Had fake trailers at the beginning of it, fake trailers between the two movies.
- 47:12And when it was released in the United States, people didn't understand that.
- 47:16So most people left after death proof after the first movie, not
- 47:20knowing that it was a double feature.
- 47:22Funny though, when I saw it, 'cause I saw both of 'em, I saw
- 47:25the double feature in the theaters.
- 47:27Death proof was the second one when I saw it.
- 47:29Is that right?
- 47:30The Rodriguez film was the first one then.
- 47:33Uh, you know, I might, I it's been so long, it might have been people
- 47:37left after Planet Terror, which was the, uh, the Rodriguez one.
- 47:41Yeah.
- 47:41So saying that I dealt with international, so I deal with the
- 47:44whole world releasing our films.
- 47:47No one wanted to release this film now because it's three and a half hours long
- 47:51and no one's gonna stay in the movie theater for three and a half hours.
- 47:54So we had to split the movies up and release 'em as two separate films.
- 47:59Now think about it, if you've marketed and did all your post-production and
- 48:03everything for one film, now you have to completely redo everything and release
- 48:08it for international, and we did that.
- 48:10And those films became like the director's cuts that were like
- 48:1410 minutes longer and all that.
- 48:16So that was a nightmare.
- 48:17So, uh, you know, which other movie had fake previews at the beginning?
- 48:21Tropic Thunder.
- 48:22I'm just gonna throw it out there.
- 48:23Oh yeah.
- 48:24Booty Sweat.
- 48:25So I love Tropic Thunder.
- 48:29Make 'em like that anymore, but they don't, they don't.
- 48:32It was great.
- 48:33Before we get into the secret Petrol heads of Hollywood, let's actually
- 48:37talk about your thoughts on some of the more recent car related films
- 48:41that have come out of Hollywood.
- 48:42So kind of your hot take on maybe the Fast and the Furious or Rush or Racing
- 48:47in the Rain or some of those movies.
- 48:49I love Rush.
- 48:50I think that's a well made film.
- 48:53I've always been a fan of Nikki Lauda and, and James Hunt and the,
- 48:57and the rivalry there and all that.
- 48:59And, you know, they were at Watkins Glen and all that, even though
- 49:02they didn't shoot it on location.
- 49:04A lot of it was all CGI and stuff like that.
- 49:07I really enjoyed that film, and I'm a big fan of Ron Howard, the director, the fast
- 49:13and Furious films, I'm not a big fan of, I mean, they're just completely stupid, you
- 49:19know, they, they defy the laws of gravity and all that stuff, but I watch 'em, I'm,
- 49:25I have to see 'em, you know, it's, it's just, it, it's pop, it's entertaining.
- 49:30Yeah.
- 49:30I mean, so don't get me wrong, I mean, I love Fast Five, the one
- 49:33that's in like Rio and stuff.
- 49:35Like that's that one, that's the best one.
- 49:37Yeah.
- 49:38I love Tokyo Drift.
- 49:39And, uh, what about Ford versus Ferrari?
- 49:42I liked it.
- 49:43Very much so.
- 49:44You didn't get all up in arms about when he, you know, he is doing 200
- 49:48and suddenly he shifts and then the pedal goes six feet further.
- 49:52It's funny that you say that 'cause there's a couple times I'm like,
- 49:54how many times is he shifting gears?
- 49:56Every card Fast and Furious is a 14 speed.
- 49:58Like a tractor trailer.
- 49:59Right.
- 49:59So besides those inaccuracies, I did enjoy the movie.
- 50:04Nine Outta 10 people are not gonna know that there's, you know, the
- 50:06engines are inaccurate, the sounds are inaccurate and all that.
- 50:10I really enjoyed it.
- 50:11I thought I'm a big fan of the director.
- 50:13It's a very inviting film.
- 50:15Yeah.
- 50:16It's kinda like you can watch it over and over.
- 50:18It's got a very warm feeling to it.
- 50:20It was shot with a lot of available light.
- 50:23So it's a beautiful looking film.
- 50:25I love that.
- 50:26The CGI is really, really down to a minimum in that film, if at all.
- 50:30That is probably my favorite car film in the past few years.
- 50:33Did they film at Willow Springs?
- 50:36I think they did.
- 50:37I don't know, but just watching the film, you can tell that
- 50:40it, it was at Willow Springs.
- 50:41Yeah, it looked legit at Lamont.
- 50:43They didn't, that was fake.
- 50:45Uh, I think they shot that in Georgia.
- 50:47There's probably some establishing shots and stuff like that.
- 50:49Yeah.
- 50:49In the town that's legit.
- 50:51But the actual track stuff, no, I think that's fake.
- 50:54So I've got a question for you.
- 50:55You, you mentioned like the original Cannonball Run, uh,
- 50:58you really liked that film.
- 51:00What about the original Gone in 60 Seconds?
- 51:03Because we reviewed that film Yeah.
- 51:04Did on our podcast we did.
- 51:06I haven't seen that film in years.
- 51:08I, I, I, I think the last time I saw it, I did a, like, a double feature
- 51:11with that in, uh, vanishing Point.
- 51:13So yeah, I mean, I love those films.
- 51:16But I'm gonna say the best driving films I've ever seen is Ronan Ronan's.
- 51:22Fantastic.
- 51:23All right, so here's a little backstory on Ronan.
- 51:25You know who's driving in those in the cars, right?
- 51:28It's all F1 drivers.
- 51:29Really?
- 51:30I didn't know that.
- 51:31Yeah, so it's all F1 drivers and just Google like the behind the scenes on
- 51:36that film and you'll learn all about it.
- 51:37That's how I did.
- 51:38I love the driving in that film 'cause it's all real.
- 51:42They're booking through niece and and stuff like that and I know
- 51:46niece and can I know those areas?
- 51:48'cause I go there for work every year.
- 51:50Fantastic.
- 51:51And John Frankenheimer is uh, who was an amazing director.
- 51:55So that film Vanishing Point, gone in 60 seconds.
- 51:59I liked, I have a soft spot for the remake.
- 52:03Don't.
- 52:04Don't be mad, but, oh, the Nick Cage.
- 52:06I like the Nick Cage one.
- 52:07I thought the first one was trash.
- 52:09I liked the Nick Cage one.
- 52:10They digging them Cannibal run still holds up.
- 52:12But you, you know, you know what the common thread with all those older movies?
- 52:16I mean, you could even lump lemons in there.
- 52:18You could lump bullet in there.
- 52:20The seven ups, stuff like that.
- 52:22They had these epic car chases.
- 52:25Yeah.
- 52:25And they were, they were legitimate car chase scenes.
- 52:28Not like the stuff that we're used to today where it's stuff's
- 52:30exploding and it's mostly CGI and whatever is, uh, fast edits nowadays.
- 52:35Like, you know, like the average shot in a Fast and Furious movie is
- 52:38about a half a second to a second.
- 52:41You know what I mean?
- 52:41It's like the older movies are long takes like one take camera in the car,
- 52:48you know, French connection, you know, like that to live and die in la Have
- 52:51you seen that movie that I haven't seen?
- 52:54Check out.
- 52:54Watch it.
- 52:55It's the same director as the French connection.
- 52:58It's William Friedkin.
- 52:59Okay.
- 53:00Okay.
- 53:00He did the ex as well.
- 53:02To live and die in LA has amazing car chases in it.
- 53:06So, uh, I highly recommend it.
- 53:08I mean, there's some terrible car Chase scene movies too.
- 53:10We reviewed some of those as well.
- 53:12And much like you talked about Miami Vice, all of them used the nine 11
- 53:15as the soundtrack for all the cars, regardless if it was a V eight or a
- 53:19four cylinder, I never understood that, but whatever, it was always a nine 11.
- 53:22Yeah, I, I just found out recently I was watching, uh, rendezvous.
- 53:29Okay.
- 53:29I just found out that it was a Mercedes.
- 53:32With a, uh, camera on the hood with like a gimbal or something
- 53:36like that in the seventies.
- 53:37But the sound is a Ferrari.
- 53:40Correct.
- 53:40And so everybody thinks it's like a Ferrari two 50 or whatever.
- 53:44And it So it's a Mercedes.
- 53:45Huh?
- 53:45It's a Mercedes.
- 53:47And the guy who filmed it, it was his Mercedes and his Ferrari,
- 53:52so he, oh, he was doing it.
- 53:54So it was a Mercedes.
- 53:55That was an impressive film, dude.
- 53:56It was shot in one go in the middle of the morning and all this crazy.
- 54:00There's a lot of myth around that movie, and, and so.
- 54:03You never know what's the truth and what is it.
- 54:05I've watched it so many times and it, it, it just, it holds
- 54:07up after, what has it been?
- 54:0960 years if not more.
- 54:10Something like that.
- 54:11I mean, it's like, what, a 10 minute film?
- 54:138, 8, 10 minute film, all one take.
- 54:15It's, I think it was shot at like five o'clock in the morning on a
- 54:18Sunday in Paris, and I've heard that there was only about three or
- 54:23four spotters in the entire thing.
- 54:25I think they were using radios or walkie talkies and stuff like that.
- 54:29And there was like one hairy moment in the whole Yeah, where the truck is
- 54:32backing up and the ladies walking out and you're like, whoa, this isn't gonna work.
- 54:37So that was amazing.
- 54:38I, I watched that over and over and they just remastered it too.
- 54:41So it really, yeah, it looks and sounds great, man.
- 54:45Too bad there isn't footage from the outside.
- 54:47It would've been really cool to see how it was made, but
- 54:49again, that's part of the myth.
- 54:51Of that movie is not knowing what's really going on.
- 54:54Yeah.
- 54:54And then people have tried to like copy it over the years as an homage and it just
- 54:59doesn't have that same, yeah, exactly.
- 55:02Well, speaking of French films, we also, if you go back and listen to some
- 55:06of the other podcast episodes we've done, we reviewed a new film that came
- 55:09out of France last year during COVID.
- 55:11It's called The Lost Bullet.
- 55:12And apparently there's gonna be a sequel to it or a trilogy, something like that.
- 55:16And actually we tweeted about it and the director responded back to us,
- 55:19which we thought was super awesome.
- 55:20But that was surprisingly good film.
- 55:23And some just like low budget cars and stuff.
- 55:26Good chasing scenes.
- 55:27Good action.
- 55:28And we were like, excuse me.
- 55:29What?
- 55:31Yeah.
- 55:31So I was dating a French woman here.
- 55:35For about a year.
- 55:36One of the main reasons I was dating her and how we clicked is 'cause she had a a 9
- 55:419 7 2 C four s cab, PDKI, I won't hold it against her, but anyway, she's, you know,
- 55:48a, a big film fan as I am and she turned me onto that film and I'm like, really?
- 55:54And I started watching.
- 55:55I'm like, this is kind of goofy, but the chase scenes are awesome.
- 55:58Exactly.
- 55:58You know, I was like, this is actually pretty good.
- 56:01It's like a cheap, uh, Lu besant, so I love Lu Besant films.
- 56:06So yeah, the French do make some great, great stuff.
- 56:09There's some really, and, and actually, and I don't know if it's part of your
- 56:12world, you're talking about international.
- 56:14We're starting to see a lot more international
- 56:16programs and films come over.
- 56:17Things like Money Heist, Lu Pen.
- 56:20There's a lot of really cool stuff like on Netflix and whatnot, and it, and
- 56:24they're being dubbed in English, which is good for, you know, American audiences.
- 56:27You can watch it in the native language or native tongue if you want.
- 56:30Right.
- 56:30I like the fact that we're cross-pollinating now.
- 56:33But, you know, talking about Lost Bullet.
- 56:34I'm with you.
- 56:35I mean, that opening scene where he puts like the Lambo motor, the back of
- 56:38his cle and he, he's trying to like run through the bank and stuff and I'm like.
- 56:42What the heck is this?
- 56:43And then after that it just, it kind of opened up and I was like, hello?
- 56:48I'm like, Hey, I got sucked in.
- 56:50Yeah, exactly.
- 56:51In, and I was exactly like, you looking at my girlfriend,
- 56:53like, what, what is this shit?
- 56:56And, and then, and she's like, just stick with it.
- 56:58And I stuck with it and I was like, oh, this is great.
- 57:00I agree with you that I'm really enjoying the fact that films and, and
- 57:05television shows from around the world are becoming more mainstream now.
- 57:09When I was growing up, when I was in film school, we were watching John Wu
- 57:13films and, and Hong Kong stuff free and stuff like Old Boy and all that stuff.
- 57:18That was really a niche market, you know, only certain film cinephiles
- 57:23would dig and now it's all mainstream.
- 57:26Yeah.
- 57:26So every show that you've just mentioned, Lupin and, and
- 57:30have you guys seen the Bureau?
- 57:31No, I haven't watched it yet.
- 57:33No.
- 57:33Watch it.
- 57:33Yeah.
- 57:33It's a French show.
- 57:35It's a espionage type thing.
- 57:37Oh, nice.
- 57:38Slow burn.
- 57:39Fantastic.
- 57:39One of the best shows I've seen in 10 years.
- 57:42I'm a big fan of Money Heist Man.
- 57:44That is, that's, you know, there's a lot of stuff around the world and I'm
- 57:48glad that Netflix, you know, they have the money to make the card shuffling
- 57:53that's going on right now, you know, with the, the Paramount Pluses and the
- 57:57Discovery Pluses and the Hulus and the Disney, and they're all plus now, right?
- 58:00Plus this and plus that.
- 58:01I think it, it helped Netflix actually diversify the portfolio because I've
- 58:06been with Netflix for such a long time.
- 58:08I mean, in the early days, you know, going back to the DVD era, and then it was
- 58:12like, oh, we have the streaming service.
- 58:13Do you want to try it?
- 58:14It was like in the A OL CD in the mail, you know what I mean?
- 58:17The stuff that was on Netflix back then, it was like, oh, it's, it's
- 58:21Muskrat manner with like, what's his face, you know, Sam Wise Gaji from
- 58:24the Lord of the Rings is the narrator.
- 58:27What's his, I can't remember his real name right now, but you know
- 58:29exactly what I'm talking about.
- 58:30John Austin.
- 58:31Sean Austin, exactly.
- 58:32So I'm like, that's like the beginning days and there was a lot
- 58:35of like, really indie stuff on there and it became so mainstream 'cause
- 58:39it was like one stop shopping.
- 58:41That was the well that everybody drank from.
- 58:43And now I'm kind of glad that we're back to some of the more diversified portfolio.
- 58:48And, and I'm, I mean, I'm a big Ang amplifi.
- 58:50I love British tv, so I like tapping into that kind of stuff.
- 58:54And, you know, getting exposure to what's going on over the pond.
- 58:57Let's talk about who are the secret petrolhead that we don't know about.
- 59:01You know, we know Tom Cruise, we know Paul Walker, we know Steve McQueen and,
- 59:05and, and, you know, all those guys.
- 59:07Were all petrolheads, but there's gotta be some other ones that maybe
- 59:10we're, we're not familiar with.
- 59:11So let's, let's go with that.
- 59:12Was Weinstein a Petrolhead?
- 59:14No, I don't think he ever drove.
- 59:16He always had a driver.
- 59:17I don't know about Secret.
- 59:19I mean, I've seen and met.
- 59:20Keanu Reeves with his ARC motorcycles.
- 59:23Mm.
- 59:23I've seen him.
- 59:25He's got a Chevelle too, right?
- 59:26Yeah.
- 59:27Brad Pitt I heard is a, uh, a big Petrolhead.
- 59:31The wrestler Goldberg.
- 59:32Oh, Goldberg, yes.
- 59:33Yeah, he's a, he, he was on a show, I thought it was on History Channel.
- 59:37They did a lot of, uh, the car stuff.
- 59:39He did a show way back in the day called The Bull Run, which
- 59:42is now like a rally, I think.
- 59:45Oh, okay.
- 59:45And Mike Musto was a contestant on that show with this.
- 59:49Oh, okay.
- 59:5068 Charger.
- 59:51I'm trying to think who else.
- 59:52I mean, so let me, I'll rephrase the question.
- 59:55Celebrities you have run into at some of these car shows that
- 59:58you didn't expect to see there.
- 59:59Jay Leno, you see all the time.
- 1:00:02I have a funny story about Jay Leno.
- 1:00:03Really quick.
- 1:00:04I was on that road, Angela's Crest, and I was in my Catherine's
- 1:00:08Haman and I'm flying up a hill.
- 1:00:11I'm probably doing about 90.
- 1:00:13In a, in a 40.
- 1:00:14Uh, but you know, it was a straightaway easy.
- 1:00:17I'm flying and coming down the hill is a yellow McLaren and it's flashing
- 1:00:22its lights at me, letting me know that there's a cop, and the closer it got.
- 1:00:27I was looking like who's driving it?
- 1:00:29And I see this big head.
- 1:00:31You mean big chin, right?
- 1:00:33He's got a huge no in it's like smoking.
- 1:00:37Yeah.
- 1:00:37And you could see it's Jay Leto.
- 1:00:38And I'm like, cool.
- 1:00:39And then it was like a month or so later I bumped into him at another
- 1:00:43car van and I said, dude, you saved me from getting a ticket.
- 1:00:46He's like, what are you talking about?
- 1:00:47And I told him and he is like, oh yeah.
- 1:00:49He is like, no problem.
- 1:00:50Uh, I was doing that for everyone.
- 1:00:51I'm like, well that, that was a cool little story.
- 1:00:54Nice.
- 1:00:54Um, there's a really big Porsche event every year in la.
- 1:00:59I can never pronounce it.
- 1:01:00It's like loof loin G in.
- 1:01:02There's something like that.
- 1:01:03It's huge, but it's put together by Patrick Long, I think Patrick Dempsey and
- 1:01:10another famous actor, I forgot who it was.
- 1:01:13And they do this huge air cooled nine 11 event every year.
- 1:01:18And the last time they did it was in 2019 and they did it
- 1:01:23at the Universal Pictures Lot.
- 1:01:26Oh wow.
- 1:01:26You get to go into the lot, which is huge.
- 1:01:30You walk around and there's all these air cooled nine elevens everywhere, like
- 1:01:34a thousand of them, and it was amazing.
- 1:01:36So I'm walking around and I'm like, wow, that's a really cool nine 11.
- 1:01:40But why am I getting this deja vu here?
- 1:01:44And I look around and sure enough, I'm standing right in the middle of
- 1:01:48the town center where back to the future was filmed, the clock tower.
- 1:01:53Oh wow.
- 1:01:54So everyone's freaking out about nine elevens and stuff.
- 1:01:56I'm freaking out because I'm standing next to the clock tower and that was
- 1:02:00pretty, I heard there's a DeLorean still rotting on the property there.
- 1:02:04Not too far from that set.
- 1:02:05Really?
- 1:02:06Yeah.
- 1:02:06It's one of the last of the, of the film cars that didn't
- 1:02:09get, is it still in the bush?
- 1:02:11Uh, yeah, I think so.
- 1:02:12It's, it's like one of the last film cars that didn't get either dismantled
- 1:02:15sold off or destroyed, and it's like still there on the property.
- 1:02:18I've seen on the street, I've seen, uh, DeLorean that are replicas of
- 1:02:24the one from the film, you know, with all the stuff complete with, um, Mr.
- 1:02:28Fusion.
- 1:02:29Yeah.
- 1:02:29Mr. Fusion.
- 1:02:30The, uh, the, the, there was, um, fog shooting out of the
- 1:02:34exhaust ports and all that.
- 1:02:35I've seen the Ghostbusters Ecto one, the Cadillac seen that.
- 1:02:39I've seen the Batmobile, the original Batmobile.
- 1:02:42Lot of cool stuff.
- 1:02:43Well, since you brought it up and you're talking about, you know, famous movie
- 1:02:46cars, there's been a lot of movie cars kind of destroyed over the years and
- 1:02:50there's, you know, rumors and wives tales about like, these big just parking lots
- 1:02:54full of Dodge chargers that are out there that are just kind of rotting in the sun.
- 1:02:58I mean, is that, is that, you know, from Dukes of Hazard or whatever, I
- 1:03:01mean, is that true or are there movie cars that you can get your hands
- 1:03:04on out there and do something with?
- 1:03:06I know if there is, I have no idea about it, but now you pique my interest, so
- 1:03:09I'm gonna probably have to do some, uh.
- 1:03:12Some research that would be great.
- 1:03:13Photography, uh, for me, I know there's like airplane
- 1:03:16graveyards and stuff like that.
- 1:03:18Out in the middle of nowhere, you know, photography's big.
- 1:03:22I mean, I guess out there with all these, you know, hot looking cars, it,
- 1:03:25it's not hard to take a bad picture.
- 1:03:26Right.
- 1:03:27So any tips and tricks for aspiring photographers?
- 1:03:30I mean, what are you using as your camera, stuff like that?
- 1:03:33I use Canon a, Canon five D Mark four.
- 1:03:36I use primarily two lenses, a 70 to 200 and, uh, 24 to 70.
- 1:03:42They're amazing cameras, but you'd be surprised what you can
- 1:03:45shoot with your iPhone nowadays.
- 1:03:48I've been hanging around some really, really good photographers, so I've
- 1:03:53been learning from them as well.
- 1:03:55The thing is, when you're taking a photo of a car, the difference
- 1:03:58between a photograph and a snapshot is positioning of the, of the, the photo.
- 1:04:04So just taking a shot of a car at a car show is super boring, so you want to try
- 1:04:10to do what's called the rule of thirds.
- 1:04:13If you know what that is to position the car cool.
- 1:04:16Blurred background or something like that, or one distinct
- 1:04:20really cool feature on the car.
- 1:04:22Uh, that's what I like to do, rather than just a regular car shot.
- 1:04:27It's hard to take shots of a car in motion to make it look like it's
- 1:04:31in motion with your cell phone, but it's easy to do on those cameras.
- 1:04:36That's kind of cool as well.
- 1:04:37And I'm really getting into black and white again.
- 1:04:40Trying to shoot in black and white is pretty cool.
- 1:04:42Nice.
- 1:04:42Not on film though.
- 1:04:43Still digital, all digital.
- 1:04:45Nice.
- 1:04:46Yeah, I, I, everything is digital nowadays, so very cool.
- 1:04:50But yeah.
- 1:04:51Uh, I'm not as well steeped in LA knowledge yet.
- 1:04:55That's right.
- 1:04:56So, while you're searching, just keep an eye out for the defender
- 1:04:59from the Viper TV series on NBC.
- 1:05:01'cause I, man, I, I would love to get my hands on something like that.
- 1:05:05My second unicorn is a falcon, you know, the Mad Max?
- 1:05:08Yeah.
- 1:05:09Uh, with the big, uh, supercharger or whatever on the top of it.
- 1:05:12I've seen a couple of those around town.
- 1:05:15A Falcon XBGT.
- 1:05:16So, speaking of which mm-hmm.
- 1:05:18Most people don't realize.
- 1:05:19Eric Ana's a major petrolhead.
- 1:05:22Have you seen his movie?
- 1:05:23Love the Beast.
- 1:05:23Absolutely.
- 1:05:24So, uh, I love that film.
- 1:05:27Uh, Eric, Ben is supposed to be, I've never met him, but I've heard
- 1:05:29he is a real down to earth cool guy.
- 1:05:32Yeah.
- 1:05:32And I think that, that movie, I mean, it's a biopic, right?
- 1:05:35I mean, in real, in reality.
- 1:05:37But I think it speaks a lot to his true personality, who he is, his
- 1:05:40humble beginnings and all that.
- 1:05:42And if for anybody that hasn't seen it, it's totally worth watching.
- 1:05:45It's a fantastic film and I make it a point to watch it every year.
- 1:05:48Yeah, I pretty much watch it almost every year.
- 1:05:50I think it's one of my favorite car films as well, especially that
- 1:05:53opening sequence where he's driving, I forget which track it is in his 9
- 1:05:579 3 cup car, and he is just talking.
- 1:05:59He's got that monologue and he's setting the stage and everything he says is true.
- 1:06:03I think of everybody that's spent time either as a coach or on track
- 1:06:07or has done some high performance driving it, it really does resonate.
- 1:06:10And I think he encapsulates that whole feeling and that
- 1:06:13monologue at the beginning.
- 1:06:14It's absolutely incredible.
- 1:06:16Yeah.
- 1:06:16There's something to be said and, and I know you can, can pick this
- 1:06:19up pretty quickly too, where, uh.
- 1:06:22You'll be with someone you'll know right off the bat that they can
- 1:06:24drive, you know, e everyone that talks blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:06:27My car does this, my car does that.
- 1:06:29I'm like, okay, cool.
- 1:06:30But like, there's certain people that have that mystique and Brock
- 1:06:34Yates Jr. Was one of those guys.
- 1:06:37What I've noticed over the years is that being at all these track events, the
- 1:06:40guys that look the grungiest and have like, you know, just don't give a crap.
- 1:06:45The best drivers.
- 1:06:46Well, welcome to GTN
- 1:06:51all my, all my coaches, all my instructors who look like Uncle Jesse from Duke dad,
- 1:06:58uh, could out drive everyone, you know, and I, and I thought that was awesome.
- 1:07:03So, yeah, so, so Mountain man, Dan, if you're listening, I, I'm sure you're
- 1:07:07smiling right now, so we're all good.
- 1:07:08Yeah, I, I love that.
- 1:07:09And it, it was great.
- 1:07:10And those are the people that I love being around because they just been
- 1:07:14there, done that have been doing it.
- 1:07:16They'll take their, you know, RV with a, a tow on it and they'll, they're retired
- 1:07:21and all they do is go from racetrack to racetrack, and that's all they do.
- 1:07:26Those are the people that if you really wanna learn how to drive, at
- 1:07:29least from my experience, are the people that you wanna be around.
- 1:07:31Absolutely.
- 1:07:32So I've got, I've got a question for you.
- 1:07:33You, you go to a lot of car shows and everything.
- 1:07:35You see a lot of people, there's a lot of money out in la.
- 1:07:38Is there one particular brand or manufacturer you would say.
- 1:07:43Is like the manufacturer of choice.
- 1:07:45And the reason I'm asking is when we went to Texas for the F1 race, it
- 1:07:49seemed like you could throw a stone in any direction and hit a McLaren.
- 1:07:53Yeah, McLaren seems to be the, uh, the the hot new thing.
- 1:07:58So you'll, you'll see a ton of them all the time.
- 1:08:01Yeah.
- 1:08:01PCH I'll pull over to get gas.
- 1:08:03There'll be 10 of 'em flying by before I, I fill up completely.
- 1:08:08And, uh, so I would say McLaren, Porsche, a lot of people are big fans of that.
- 1:08:13A lot of old muscle cars, which is really cool.
- 1:08:17But you're not gonna see, obviously, you're not gonna see a ton of them on
- 1:08:20the canyons and stuff like that, right.
- 1:08:21They're just cruising along, you know, loping.
- 1:08:24Are they coops or convertibles?
- 1:08:25Most of the time.
- 1:08:26Coops.
- 1:08:27You do see really?
- 1:08:28Every once in a while.
- 1:08:29Oh, there's a really cool place in Burbank called Bob's Big Boy.
- 1:08:34And every Friday it's like an old school.
- 1:08:38Think of American graffiti.
- 1:08:40Okay.
- 1:08:40Uh, if you guys remember that, are you from the east coast?
- 1:08:44Grew up eating at Bob's Big four.
- 1:08:46I mean, yeah.
- 1:08:48Don't have that.
- 1:08:48So they're in the Midwest.
- 1:08:50They're called like F Fishes or something like that.
- 1:08:52I mean, they've been around forever.
- 1:08:52Yeah.
- 1:08:52Went, I went to one in Ohio just like a two couple years ago.
- 1:08:56Yeah, they don't, we don't have that shit in New York.
- 1:08:58Do we have like White Castle?
- 1:08:59You got, you got pizza, you got the pies, got pizza.
- 1:09:02That's it.
- 1:09:03But they got the best bagels though.
- 1:09:05The bagels.
- 1:09:06Can I get a schmear?
- 1:09:08I need a schmear on my bagel.
- 1:09:09Locks on my bagels.
- 1:09:11So the Bob's big boy in Burbank is really well known and it's one
- 1:09:16of those places where they used to have like girls on roller skates.
- 1:09:18Yeah.
- 1:09:19The food and all that.
- 1:09:20So every Friday night there's a car show there every Friday night
- 1:09:24and it's always the same guys.
- 1:09:26Like, I've been there, you know, it's the garage queens and stuff, you
- 1:09:29know, but they have beautiful cars, so I, I really can't make fun of 'em.
- 1:09:32But favorite thing on the secret menu At In-N-Out Burger.
- 1:09:35Go two by two or three by three animal style.
- 1:09:39That's, and a rooter flute.
- 1:09:41It's the longest menu that doesn't exist.
- 1:09:43But anyway, keep going.
- 1:09:46There's, uh, if you guys know Mel Steiner, not from Happy Days, right?
- 1:09:50No, not from Happy Days.
- 1:09:52Uh, it's from, uh, the American Graffiti was shot.
- 1:09:54Yeah, there.
- 1:09:55So there's two of 'em here.
- 1:09:57One of them is in Hollywood, or I think West Hollywood or Hollywood.
- 1:10:01And then the second one.
- 1:10:03Is right down the street from me, right here in Sherman Oaks, uh, where I live.
- 1:10:08And uh, that's kind of cool.
- 1:10:10Nice.
- 1:10:10So retro and all that.
- 1:10:11And you'll see some cool cars.
- 1:10:12You haven't mentioned anything about Lowriders and Lowriders have so like,
- 1:10:16started in Southern California and I haven't heard you say anything about 'em
- 1:10:19is, I mean, is that culture still big?
- 1:10:22The Lowrider culture out there?
- 1:10:23Yeah, it, it definitely is, but it, I could be completely wrong, but I think
- 1:10:28that culture is in a certain area of la I definitely have seen car shows
- 1:10:34where it's, you know, all the cars going like this and all that crazy stuff,
- 1:10:39but I don't see them at the events that I go to, uh, in Malibu and the
- 1:10:45Canyons and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:10:47I'm, I'm fascinated by those cars.
- 1:10:49They, they, they amazing.
- 1:10:50Oh, I know nothing about 'em with the spinners and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:10:54They're a beautiful looking works of art.
- 1:10:57I just don't know where to go.
- 1:10:59I mean, if I really wanted to, I can just go on Google and, and find out
- 1:11:03where there's a car show for that.
- 1:11:04Yeah.
- 1:11:04Yeah.
- 1:11:04But again, LA is so big just to go from here to like, let's say like
- 1:11:09Inglewood or something like that, or Compton or Long Beach is an hour.
- 1:11:14Yeah.
- 1:11:14And away and you're still in la.
- 1:11:16Crazy.
- 1:11:17So I've been trying to find all these little pockets of where
- 1:11:21to go and, and, and hang out.
- 1:11:23And it just so happens that I'm closer to Malibu and Venice and
- 1:11:29uh, all those areas for car shows.
- 1:11:31So, since you brought it up, before I get into my next question, have you
- 1:11:34been down to the Grand Prix at Long?
- 1:11:36No, I haven't.
- 1:11:37I I was just talking to a horse experienced instructor who lives in Long
- 1:11:44Beach and he was telling me, you should definitely come down because you could
- 1:11:48see the track and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:11:49So I've driven the streets when it wasn't a track.
- 1:11:52'cause I had gone down there just to do that.
- 1:11:54'cause you could do it, it's all in the streets.
- 1:11:55But how cool would it be if you could, let's say on the Thursday they do
- 1:11:59an open de or something like that.
- 1:12:01That would be slick.
- 1:12:01Right?
- 1:12:02That'd be awesome.
- 1:12:02Or like, even if they don't wanna go that crazy and to just have
- 1:12:05like go-karts or something like that, that would be amazing.
- 1:12:07I'll do the celebrity Celica from back in the day.
- 1:12:10Like, let's go for it, man.
- 1:12:11I, I'm still trying to convince Eric to go out there with me to watch
- 1:12:15the trophy trucks at Long Beach.
- 1:12:16Dude, that's cool.
- 1:12:17Watching that on TV is fantastic.
- 1:12:20What I've noticed in LA is because it's so big, if you live in certain
- 1:12:25areas of la like let's say you live in Santa Monica, you're gonna, for
- 1:12:30the most part, stay in Santa Monica.
- 1:12:33In that area because it's such a pain to get out of it, to go anywhere.
- 1:12:36So people just like stay in that area.
- 1:12:39And I don't have that mentality yet because, uh, I'm still learning about
- 1:12:44LA and I don't mind driving everywhere.
- 1:12:47I don't mind saying, okay, I'll meet you at your house and
- 1:12:49you, you're 40 minutes away.
- 1:12:51No problem.
- 1:12:52I'll, I'll, I'll be there.
- 1:12:53Plus I love to drive, you know, so, uh, I, it doesn't bother me, but people here
- 1:12:58are, are like, if they live in Venice and I live in Sherman Oaks, uh, they're like,
- 1:13:03no, I'm, I'm not coming to visit you.
- 1:13:05You know, like, we'll meet halfway.
- 1:13:07I'm like, all right, whatever.
- 1:13:09And I'll never forget the first time I went out to LA and
- 1:13:11there's that one section where all the highways come together.
- 1:13:13It's like the five and the 10 and the whatever.
- 1:13:15It's like, and I think I counted nine lanes on my side of the highway, and I
- 1:13:19was like, I need to get off over there.
- 1:13:22Right.
- 1:13:22I'm not, I'm not used to that.
- 1:13:23Like, you know, our widest highways here, what, four lanes wide?
- 1:13:26I mean, it's, it's, it's bumpers.
- 1:13:27Yeah.
- 1:13:28Yeah.
- 1:13:28It's pretty crazy.
- 1:13:29So the, I think one of the biggest congestion points is.
- 1:13:33Taking the 1 0 1 to the 4 0 5.
- 1:13:35Okay.
- 1:13:36So what happens is, is that the 1 0 1 is like five or six lanes, and then
- 1:13:40to get to the 4 0 5, it's one lane.
- 1:13:43One lane, dude.
- 1:13:45So I lived, my first apartment was in North Hollywood and
- 1:13:50my office is in Santa Monica.
- 1:13:51Take me an hour and like 30 minutes to go.
- 1:13:5512, like 14 miles.
- 1:13:57Oh my god.
- 1:13:58Insane.
- 1:13:59So I bought a Ducati and I would take the back roads and just, you
- 1:14:03know, lane splitting is legal here.
- 1:14:05So I would just creep up, you know, to the lights and I would make it in 30 minutes.
- 1:14:10What Ducati did you get?
- 1:14:11Monster?
- 1:14:128 21. Nice.
- 1:14:14Nice bike and, uh, cool bike.
- 1:14:16I put Terminis on it and, and all that.
- 1:14:18Going back to what I said when we first started talking, they're the worst drivers
- 1:14:23and I pretty much almost die on the bike.
- 1:14:26And I actually got into a, it's a whole other story, but I got
- 1:14:29into a really bad situation.
- 1:14:32With a guy, road rage and uh, attacked me, screwed up my, uh, leg.
- 1:14:37I had four surgeries.
- 1:14:40Wow.
- 1:14:40God, that's a whole other story.
- 1:14:42So that was like, okay, I think I'm not gonna ride a bike in LA anymore.
- 1:14:46If I do get a bike, I'm only going to use it on a Sunday morning at five in the
- 1:14:49morning and go to the crest or something.
- 1:14:52Yeah.
- 1:14:52LA was living in North Hollywood.
- 1:14:54It was horrible.
- 1:14:55So I moved.
- 1:14:56To Sherman Oaks, just to bypass that 4 0 5 1 0 1 connection.
- 1:15:02So I'm right on the 4 0 5.
- 1:15:04Now it takes me 30 minutes or four.
- 1:15:06Wow.
- 1:15:06And it's a three mile difference.
- 1:15:08This like North Hollywood is three or four miles away from me.
- 1:15:11It's horrible.
- 1:15:13We've been talking a lot about the car culture, the differences,
- 1:15:15you know, all this kind of thing.
- 1:15:16But I also find, you know, as you said, LA is huge.
- 1:15:19It's dense, it's one of the, you know, one of the largest
- 1:15:21cities in the United States.
- 1:15:22But I also find it, you know, as we're continue to talk about car
- 1:15:25culture to be a bit bipolar, right?
- 1:15:27And so I wanna touch on the fact that you're, you've been
- 1:15:29talking a lot about sports cars.
- 1:15:31You got guys with the McLaren's and the Ferrari's and the Porsches, and then
- 1:15:34you have the other contingent, right?
- 1:15:36And I'm not, I'm not here to throw shade, but I'm talking about
- 1:15:38the EV revolution folks, right?
- 1:15:41So yeah, look, you got this weird seesaw going on where you have a huge
- 1:15:45car culture, people that are invested in the petrol world, and then you've
- 1:15:48got the other side where it's all about the Teslas and the Priuses and the, the
- 1:15:52Nissan Leafs and all that stuff, right?
- 1:15:54So, oh, I'm glad to talk about those guys.
- 1:15:56I mean, out here, the biggest thing is the Prius in the left lane.
- 1:16:00It's weird here that in New York, at least, if I'm in the
- 1:16:03left lane and I'm doing 80 and you're doing 70 a lot of the time.
- 1:16:09They'll get out of the way.
- 1:16:10Maybe every once in a while I'll flash my lights really quick
- 1:16:13and they'll get outta the way.
- 1:16:15That does not exist in la It doesn't.
- 1:16:18I go faster on the 4 0 5 in the right lane than in the left lane.
- 1:16:23I pass everyone, I don't get it there.
- 1:16:25I don't know if it's a sense of entitlement, just lack of situational
- 1:16:30awareness or they just don't give an F. So that's the Prius problem with Teslas.
- 1:16:36They're all over the place, dude.
- 1:16:38All over the place.
- 1:16:39But I mean, are you seeing a shift or is there more of a blend?
- 1:16:42Like the guy that's got the McLaren, he DA is a Tesla or something like that?
- 1:16:46I mean, yeah, I think the guy that's got the McLaren is
- 1:16:48probably, uh, daily a, a tie can.
- 1:16:51You know, and so, I mean, look, the Teslas are fast as hell and they actually
- 1:16:57handle pretty good because of the lo, you know, the center of gravity thing.
- 1:17:01I do love them.
- 1:17:01I would love getting a model three as a, as a daily.
- 1:17:05They're just so bland.
- 1:17:07There's only like, what, three colors?
- 1:17:10You know, four colors so that you see 'em all the time.
- 1:17:12Every once in a while you'll see someone that like put a matte
- 1:17:15wrap on it or something like that, and that's pretty cool.
- 1:17:18I'm seeing a lot of them on the road now.
- 1:17:21A lot.
- 1:17:22I think it, it is definitely the wave of the future.
- 1:17:24You know, every car is gonna, it didn't be who just said that they're
- 1:17:27not doing combustion engines in it.
- 1:17:29Audi.
- 1:17:29Audi did, but that's, I mean, VW said that a couple years ago and they're the parent
- 1:17:33company, so it was only a matter of time.
- 1:17:36Look, I, I, I think it's smart and I think it's the way to go,
- 1:17:39but you know, these cars that we drive are always gonna be around.
- 1:17:43I'm glad that you have the option now to, to do both.
- 1:17:47Hopefully not every car in the future is gonna be electric.
- 1:17:51They're still gonna do internal combustion, naturally aspirated, you
- 1:17:54know, engines and stuff, but who knows.
- 1:17:56So what's the infrastructure like in, in LA for all these EVs?
- 1:18:00Or is it just everybody's got a garage?
- 1:18:03I mean, there's, I'm sure there's plenty of street parking, just like in New York.
- 1:18:06So how are these folks managing, you know, LA being so big, there's
- 1:18:10a lot more space here than New York.
- 1:18:12Okay.
- 1:18:12So get, finding parking is extremely easy.
- 1:18:16And it freaked me out because I was like, I gotta leave 20 minutes earlier
- 1:18:21'cause I'm never gonna find Park.
- 1:18:23And it's like, whoop, you're like the only car on the street.
- 1:18:25You know what I mean?
- 1:18:26Plus there's like garages everywhere and it's like a, like the public parking and
- 1:18:31it's like a dollar, you know, maybe $2.
- 1:18:34And in L in New York, it's like $50 for an hour.
- 1:18:37So that freaked me out too.
- 1:18:38So I was like, uh, wow, this is amazing.
- 1:18:41The infrastructure here is different.
- 1:18:43There's like power stations or whatever they're called everywhere.
- 1:18:47And because there's so much space, people have garages all the time.
- 1:18:52And, uh, the more modern buildings in townhouses or apartment
- 1:18:56buildings have designated bots for EV cars, which is very cool.
- 1:19:01The last apartment I lived in had like one complete floor just for EV charging.
- 1:19:07Wow.
- 1:19:07That's pretty cool.
- 1:19:08At least some forward thinking.
- 1:19:10I mean, I think the challenge we have here on the East coast is we're
- 1:19:13always kind of concerned with the mileage game, the range game, right?
- 1:19:17But because I think the problem is the infrastructure is so much
- 1:19:20older because, you know, the east coast was settled first.
- 1:19:23There's a lot of old, you know, look at Boston, look at dc
- 1:19:26look at Philadelphia, right?
- 1:19:28Retrofit all that infrastructure is, is a very big challenge.
- 1:19:32And people are like, well, why can't you just do it because
- 1:19:34you can't, you know what I mean?
- 1:19:36It, it, it doesn't happen overnight.
- 1:19:37So it's very interesting to see the difference West versus east out here.
- 1:19:42Again, because of space.
- 1:19:44They are very forward thinking out here and, uh, it, it, it's pretty cool.
- 1:19:49There's the, the care for the environment is extremely, uh, big topic here.
- 1:19:54There's a lot of liberals and you know, and there's a lot of people, there's a
- 1:19:59lot of hippies and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:20:01It's, it's la you know, it's California.
- 1:20:03I like it.
- 1:20:04I love it.
- 1:20:05I just want them to get the hell out of the way in the, in the left lane.
- 1:20:09That's my main concern.
- 1:20:11Well, I mean, it's 72 mile an hour.
- 1:20:12That Prius is pretty much floored, so you can only go so fast.
- 1:20:16So the speed limit here, for the most part is 65.
- 1:20:19When you start going out of the city, it gets to about 70.
- 1:20:22I have to say though, people fly on these roads except for the Prius.
- 1:20:28I'll be doing 80 and I'll get passed by a Celica doing 90 or, and it's common.
- 1:20:34They just book and you know, I have the common courtesy.
- 1:20:37If I'm in the left lane and I see a guy approaching, I get out of the way
- 1:20:40going back to really quick to, uh, to driving on the track and whatnot.
- 1:20:45This comes back to me driving on the street.
- 1:20:48Jay Tepper gave me some really good advice on how to keep my skills
- 1:20:54sharp while driving on the highway.
- 1:20:56And what he said was, do not stay in the left lane.
- 1:20:59He's like, because you become content in the left lane and all you do is
- 1:21:03just like this, go through the traffic.
- 1:21:06You're always looking around you that'll keep your, you know, keep you sharp.
- 1:21:10And it's so true.
- 1:21:11And when I was driving up the button, Willow, I was doing the exact same thing.
- 1:21:15I was in the left lane.
- 1:21:16I'm like, oh man, I wanna have some fun with this.
- 1:21:199, 8, 7. So I was going, but gingerly, you know, not being an asshole.
- 1:21:24Yeah.
- 1:21:24I mean it's, it's like being door to door with you and 500 of your closest friends.
- 1:21:29Yeah.
- 1:21:30Not too different than the track.
- 1:21:32So Paul, it has been a blast reconnecting and, and getting to hear about what the
- 1:21:36West Coast is like and doing the compare and contrast and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:21:39And I, and like I said, you are sorely missed around the paddock.
- 1:21:42I mean, we always had a lot of fun at the track events and it, it's
- 1:21:45just not the same, but you know.
- 1:21:47I guess the more things go forward, the more we have to change.
- 1:21:49We have to adapt and, and come on to new things.
- 1:21:51So it's good to hear all these new stories and and all that.
- 1:21:54So for all of you that are listening out there and you wanna check out some of
