- 0:00Hello everyone, and welcome to Five Things Friday AIPAC
- 0:03Edition. Now this week we are coming to
- 0:05you on a Monday, so don't panic if you've been waiting all
- 0:08weekend for us, we are here. It's Monday for Five Things
- 0:11Friday. Hello.
- 0:23Hello it. Should be.
- 0:25It was Bonjour. Bonjour.
- 0:27Come on, Delibo. Jejama Bell Ali Monster Monster.
- 0:33Unkilla Dutomat. Civil Play.
- 0:38See, I was in, I didn't. I tied in French.
- 0:40See, you know I tied in French and being in a grocer.
- 0:43Oh, it's fantastic. It was brilliant.
- 0:45I felt I was conversing with a a, a genuine French person.
- 0:51I think my accent would be considered quite rugged in
- 0:54Paris. I bring.
- 0:56You your home now, right? Yes, I am.
- 0:58Hi, I'm back in Sydney. You know, how does your
- 1:00scheduling issues? Yeah.
- 1:01So yeah, every week. So listen, why don't we jump
- 1:04straight in and why don't we? Absolutely, if we're we're,
- 1:06we're joking about Rs and NRF, Why don't you give us some
- 1:09thoughts? How did it go?
- 1:10Well, it was, it was really cool actually.
- 1:13It was the first show and I suppose for me it's the first
- 1:16European show I've been to. And I gotta say that as the
- 1:21retail community around the world is pretty unique and quite
- 1:24similar and quite global in its stinking.
- 1:26But what was really cool was it, you know, this was a big show,
- 1:29bigger than definitely bigger than AIPAC.
- 1:30It was 480 exhibitors, like 25,000 square metres of Expo,
- 1:34which is pretty big. Yeah.
- 1:35You know, this, there was 200 international speakers, You
- 1:38know, headline speaker was the CFI, sorry, the CEO, the global
- 1:42CEO of Sephora. Yeah, which is pretty good.
- 1:44But they had Sam's Club out of the US, you know, a whole bunch
- 1:47of really cool speech. So yeah, for a first, she showed
- 1:49the content was amazing and and great speakers.
- 1:52I think you saw a session from the metro and the AI, It was
- 1:54probably one of the best AI sessions you've ever seen, you
- 1:57would say. Yeah.
- 1:58To be honest, that was brilliant.
- 2:00Metro fashion was phenomenal. Yeah, and so it's a really cool
- 2:03content. And then and then things like
- 2:06exhibit A big ideas. Obviously we have them in Asia
- 2:08Pacific and in New York, but they had 60 sessions and they
- 2:11were all amazing. So you know, for a first time
- 2:14show is like pretty cool. So I came away really excited
- 2:17because, you know, coming to a show out of market, out of my
- 2:21territory and, and experiencing it, you know, it was, it was
- 2:24fantastic and saw a few familiar faces floating around.
- 2:27But it you can really see for Asia Pacific, there's a
- 2:30separation. You'll see a lot of people from
- 2:32Asia Pacific going to the US, but far less going from Asia
- 2:35Pacific to Europe. Got you.
- 2:37And I think probably what we'll probably find in our this
- 2:40current economic times that Asia and Europe might find themselves
- 2:44becoming a bit more closely aligned, so to speak.
- 2:48Well, yeah, I think when, yeah, I can definitely see the
- 2:51groundwork for that. Yeah.
- 2:52And we saw Emmanuel Macron in Asia recently and there's been
- 2:56other European leaders down here.
- 2:58So I think that there's going to, I think you know, if you're,
- 3:02if you're thinking about retail and heartland traditional retail
- 3:06luxury brands, those with some classic retail brands, you know,
- 3:10you might consider going heading up to up to Paris in, in
- 3:14September next year because I think, you know, it was, it was
- 3:17a really cool experience. I had a great time and I'll be
- 3:19definitely going back next year. I think.
- 3:21OK, cool. So yeah, so, yeah.
- 3:23So it was a stand out show for me.
- 3:25So and I had a good, we had a really good time, yeah.
- 3:27OK, I, I had a mixed time. So I'm going to be honest, I
- 3:32love you. I love the impact show.
- 3:33It was, it was a bit of everything, but there were,
- 3:35there were some definite glimpses of gold and I and I
- 3:38really did enjoy the thing. I thought the Expo space was
- 3:41phenomenal. I did think they had a good
- 3:43expertise. The innovation hubs were really
- 3:45great and some of the keynotes were phenomenal.
- 3:47So I'm going to go straight in with my 3:00 and then we can
- 3:50finish actually 2-3. It's the same one, but
- 3:54ultimately there's three markets within the region and there's
- 3:58like one consumer reset and a lot of decisions on the table
- 4:02for for the industry as a whole. And what I'm going to try and do
- 4:06is connect Shanghai faction week SS 26I's beauty and the luxury
- 4:13surge that we've been talking about, which basically is 3 PL
- 4:17build out into India, what analysts are calling them the
- 4:20recession glam, which more recession because it's all doom
- 4:25and gloom in the UK when we're doing this in the UK.
- 4:28And then you can think of like the next 3 minutes as an
- 4:31operational briefing on what to track, what to place bets on.
- 4:35Obviously, it's not financial advice.
- 4:36So please do not make any financial decisions based on
- 4:39what what we're saying and which.
- 4:42Just call my broker. The Shanghai SP 6 is a buying
- 4:49market with momentum. It's running from the 9th and
- 4:526th to so from the 9th to the 16th of October 100 plus show.
- 4:56It's a trade show like Omni time show mode returning
- 4:59international debuts on the calendar by a participate
- 5:03participation and it's reportedly back to pre pandemic.
- 5:08So you'll see Adidas love Adidas staging headline show the
- 5:12Shanghai's creating centre airing running its generation
- 5:16awards. Obviously caring is the luxury
- 5:19group and Harrods back with its forum and it and it's not just
- 5:23sort of look looking at the culture, it's looking at an
- 5:26efficient sales engine that sort of has a tighter collections,
- 5:31hero items and a schedule that's I think probably on on to be one
- 5:37of the best globally for for global buyers basically.
- 5:41And vogue business has a whole bunch of take takes it further.
- 5:45So I'll put vogue businesses link in the show notes and you
- 5:48can go off to do with that. And So what you what do you do
- 5:52with that? In my mind, you treat the
- 5:53Shanghai event as an building week, not just a PR week.
- 5:59So when you're looking into China specifically for growth,
- 6:02you're looking at the capsules that are being released by these
- 6:06designers to get an idea of what the demand signals are.
- 6:10And that should sort of look at sell through, help you look at
- 6:13sell through return rates and reorder velocity because you're
- 6:17now getting a sense of what is coming into fashion basically.
- 6:22So, so that's that's the thing on Shanghai, actually, I'm not
- 6:25sharing it, but let's see. All right, there we go.
- 6:28Moving on to and I will beautifully transition this one.
- 6:33So the next one, India, the next luxury beauty growth engine,
- 6:37Globie beauty groups are doubling down on India.
- 6:40The luxury beauty segment is about $800 million today.
- 6:44It's projected to reach 4 billion by in the next 10 years.
- 6:49And that's a low base luxuries, roughly 4% of India's 21 billion
- 6:55dollars beauty and personal care market far Southeast Asia.
- 7:00Oh, far below is A and north. So the runaway remains long and
- 7:06you'll look to see more brands, more intensity coming into the
- 7:11region and expanding distribution through likes of
- 7:14Nika and modern Trade testing more premium cities and going
- 7:18into more premium regions within the the country.
- 7:22And Reuters has a whole piece on this.
- 7:24So is that the Reuters? Yes, that is the Reuters
- 7:27fantastic. And and So what how to think
- 7:29about that? Why is that important?
- 7:30There's a three tier price ladder with real product
- 7:33distance between the tiers. And so when you anchor claims in
- 7:37efficacy and you show that the reviews are not just ads and
- 7:42this we're talking about sort of social marketing.
- 7:44And if you run channels, you plan your inventory and you look
- 7:48at your fixtures around festivals and wedding cycles
- 7:51that actually are massive moments for beauty, it becomes
- 7:56a, you know, the growth engine of the future.
- 7:58So I think for a lot of retailers, it's the tracking.
- 8:02How do we and how are they going into the in the into the region,
- 8:06but basically planting the seeds of tomorrow because it's
- 8:09exponential growth for. The So we are we seeing all the
- 8:12main international players, Yeah.
- 8:14Or we are we seeing? Yeah.
- 8:15Absolutely. So I think in the in the article
- 8:19it talks about which what I didn't want to do is just
- 8:22rewrite what is in the article, but basically it says, you know,
- 8:25from Japan to France, L'Oreal, basically everyone's moving in
- 8:29there. And that's where I got the
- 8:31numbers from in terms of the big growth, but pretty much all of
- 8:35the major beauty players are moving into the region or as I
- 8:38was saying, laying the seeds or the foundation for future
- 8:42growth. And I think that's the, you
- 8:44know, sometimes people get the balance wrong of how, how
- 8:47quickly do we move into a market.
- 8:49And, and for me and for us, we always talk about building a
- 8:52community. So how do you build community
- 8:55via, you know, at, at the same time as building a business?
- 8:59And I think that's only achieved through going into a market,
- 9:03slowly getting your socials running and getting the
- 9:06community engaged with the brand and then expanding because then
- 9:10you're creating FOMO. And yeah, and we're saying,
- 9:12we're saying that in Southeast Asia with people like shopping
- 9:14and Lazada, you know where where some of these guys particularly
- 9:18beauty in other categories which are similar coming in via online
- 9:21marketplace strategy where they're sort of renting other
- 9:24people's sort of warehousing and last mile delivery services and
- 9:27free PL services. Yeah.
- 9:30And and entering a market gently getting their product on the
- 9:33ground, getting their product into consumer hands and then
- 9:36coming in and delivering an Omni channel experience through
- 9:38partners. But that's that's we're seeing
- 9:40that happen in the region now really in Southeast Asia, Yeah.
- 9:43I think just sort of stick sticking with the three PLS and
- 9:47laying the track for for growth. There was a CB report this year
- 9:51that cited India is the most preferred expansion market for
- 9:55the region and three PLS with nearly 70% of planning to expand
- 10:00in the next two years. So that's 40 to 50% logistics
- 10:04real estate leasing between 20 to 124 and over 30% in the first
- 10:10half of 2025. Most plan to stay asset light
- 10:14via multi tenanted facilities and ramping up the warehouse
- 10:18management systems, automation and cold chain which basically
- 10:21means faster scale up, build better last mile engagement and
- 10:25improve service levels for categories like cosmetics and so
- 10:29I'm. Sorry, I think quick commerce is
- 10:31quick commerce must be driving a lot of that though, because,
- 10:34because there must be, you know, in those high densities, tier
- 10:37one cities, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, you know, I reckon
- 10:41there's going to be some pretty crazy delivery mechanisms.
- 10:46Yeah, and and multi, multi just multi location and brand
- 10:49location sharing because you know, not every, you know with
- 10:52the diversity of what's going on in quick commerce India, I don't
- 10:55think you could actually do have that many black sites in terms
- 10:59of distribution centres to actually make it work without
- 11:02having to share and and and and on sell your capacity if you if
- 11:05you've got some. Yeah, I've got one more, but
- 11:08because of time, let's go. So Myron's recession glam.
- 11:11I'll put this in the beauty note so we may cover it off next
- 11:14time. And let's close with your final
- 11:16one. I think, yeah, so one's mine's
- 11:18quite exciting. I want to bring it back to
- 11:20Australia because I haven't talked about Australia for a
- 11:22long time because I feel very conscious being Australia that
- 11:24we always talk about ourselves. So now I am and I'm going to
- 11:27celebrate that. So to yesterday, I think, or
- 11:30today, a Deloitte report came out from the team at Deloitte.
- 11:33There's a great retail team at Deloitte.
- 11:34You haven't come across them in Australia.
- 11:36And the thing that came back from these guys was they've just
- 11:40done their holiday retail report for 2025 S holiday meeting from
- 11:44Black Friday through to Boxing Day.
- 11:46And the thing they found, which we know is counter to Europe and
- 11:51to the US is that optimism is really starting to return to
- 11:54Australia. Now obviously we're the lucky
- 11:56country. So we have, we are optimistic
- 11:58bunch. We are glass half full bunch.
- 12:00But Australians plan, according to Deloitte, Australians are
- 12:03playing, it's been 14 to 15 more percent this season than last
- 12:07season, so about $11140 per person.
- 12:09And most retailers in Australia expect sales growth from last
- 12:14season compared with only 51% in 2024.
- 12:17So there's there's optimism on both sides of the both sides of
- 12:20the fence that consumers are feeling more positive and
- 12:22retailers are feeling more positive.
- 12:24And what's really interesting is, is that retailers expect to
- 12:27generate half their holiday revenue from we have a thing
- 12:29called click Frenzy, which is a retail festival like Friday and
- 12:32Cyber Monday in in Australia. But then Christmas and Boxing
- 12:35Day are expected to deliver the other half with the most with
- 12:38most sales on those two days alone, which is pretty cool.
- 12:41And where did where is this growth coming from?
- 12:43Well, it's coming from 18 to 24 year old saying they're going to
- 12:46spend more. And it's coming from blue collar
- 12:49workers who are back employed and, and leading the charge at
- 12:52the checkout. So that's pretty cool.
- 12:54You know, the one last thing of note that's really important is
- 12:57that more than 1/3 of consumers in Australia or Australian
- 13:00consumers, they said they're going to switch brand for a
- 13:02better deal, IE looking for value rising from, you know,
- 13:06it's, it's 42 of those under 35. So there's some real green
- 13:10shoots on. It's not saying that the the
- 13:12market's going to turn on its head and have a huge trading
- 13:15period, but there's a little bit of posit little bit of
- 13:17positivity out there. And I think in the content, in
- 13:19the context of the global socio economic uncertainty with war
- 13:23and with and and trade and all that type of stuff, to have
- 13:27these queen shoots in Australia is quite was quite a positive
- 13:30thing. Because I think that, you know,
- 13:31it's not so the case in other marketer in the world.
- 13:34And you were saying it'd be a little bit before with with the
- 13:35UK. It's not so bad at the moment,
- 13:39yes, which is so long. I think, I think it's nice, it's
- 13:43nice to have, it's nice to go into a season with some positive
- 13:46narrative around it. So thank you for that Reef.
- 13:49We're going to take a break for two weeks.
- 13:51Oh, actually, forget that. No, no, not net.
- 13:54We'll take, we'll take quick off.
- 13:56Yeah, but we'll be back the following week.
- 13:58But we'll do once again, we'll do the Friday on Monday because
- 14:01like I get back on leave on the Thursday.
- 14:03So we'll do it on the table. We'll do it every recording on
- 14:05the Friday. But you might actually people
- 14:07might only see someone. I said don't sit at your
- 14:09computer all weekend waiting, OK?
- 14:12We promise it's coming, but don't wait for us.
- 14:13I know you do. I know lots of you.
- 14:15Just sit there and wait for it to come in on a Friday.
- 14:17It may not happen, OK? It depends on Alex's editing
- 14:20skills. That's fantastic Reef, my
- 14:24friend, have a wonderful couple of Yeah a week, whatever and
- 14:27we'll. Speak.
- 14:28Take care mate. Bye.
- 14:29See ya.
