Transcript
- 0:02Speaker: You are listening to the
- 0:03Speaker: Cookbook Love Podcast with
- 0:04Speaker: Maggie Greene, episode number
- 0:07Speaker: four sixteen.
- 0:10Speaker: Welcome to the cookbook Love
- 0:12Speaker: Podcast, a podcast that
- 0:14Speaker: celebrates cookbook readers,
- 0:16Speaker: buyers, collectors, writers, and
- 0:18Speaker: clubs.
- 0:19Speaker: And now your host, cookbook
- 0:21Speaker: author, culinary dietitian, and
- 0:23Speaker: cookbook writing coach, Maggie
- 0:24Speaker: Greene.
- 0:31Speaker: Hi, everybody.
- 0:32Speaker: Welcome back to another episode of the Cookbook Love Podcast.
- 0:35Speaker: How's everybody doing today?
- 0:37Speaker: Hope you are all doing well.
- 0:38Speaker: I am having a great day here in my cookbook.
- 0:43Speaker: Bunker.
- 0:44Speaker: Had a private coaching client
- 0:46Speaker: earlier today, have been working
- 0:48Speaker: on the podcast, and did a really
- 0:51Speaker: nice summary of all of the
- 0:53Speaker: podcasts that I have recorded,
- 0:55Speaker: categorized them in terms of
- 0:57Speaker: different topics, and I'm
- 0:59Speaker: excited to talk with you more
- 1:02Speaker: about that very soon, so that
- 1:05Speaker: you can perhaps have a guide to
- 1:07Speaker: the podcast that will help you,
- 1:09Speaker: especially, um, search for and
- 1:11Speaker: think about some of the older
- 1:13Speaker: shows that I have that I know
- 1:14Speaker: can definitely help people who
- 1:16Speaker: love to read, write, and collect
- 1:19Speaker: cookbooks.
- 1:20Speaker: So today on the show, I'm bringing you an encore episode
- 1:23Speaker: of Are There Too many Cookbooks?
- 1:25Speaker: This is a thought that many of my students and people on my
- 1:29Speaker: email list have.
- 1:31Speaker: It is holding them back from writing their own cookbook
- 1:34Speaker: because they feel like there are too many cookbooks.
- 1:39Speaker: So if this sounds like something that you maybe have been
- 1:42Speaker: thinking that you have thought, well, I'm not going to write a
- 1:45Speaker: cookbook because that I believe that to be true.
- 1:48Speaker: Or someone has told you you
- 1:50Speaker: shouldn't write a cookbook
- 1:51Speaker: because there's too many
- 1:52Speaker: cookbooks.
- 1:53Speaker: I hope that this episode will speak to your heart and help you
- 1:57Speaker: to see that we always will need more cookbooks for people who
- 2:03Speaker: are new to a particular diagnosis, perhaps new to a
- 2:09Speaker: particular stage in life, or new to cooking or baking.
- 2:14Speaker: So I hope you enjoy this encore episode.
- 2:17Speaker: And here we go away to the show.
- 2:21Speaker: I'm excited to be here to talk to you about the concept that
- 2:27Speaker: there are too many cookbooks.
- 2:30Speaker: I actually went through a period
- 2:32Speaker: of time where I believed that
- 2:35Speaker: there wasn't a need for any more
- 2:38Speaker: cookbooks.
- 2:39Speaker: I can't even really believe that I'm telling you this and that.
- 2:44Speaker: I really sometimes thought that
- 2:46Speaker: there wasn't a need for
- 2:48Speaker: cookbooks written by me, or
- 2:51Speaker: cookbooks written by other
- 2:53Speaker: people.
- 2:54Speaker: And why would anyone care what
- 2:56Speaker: anyone else had to say about
- 2:57Speaker: food.
- 2:59Speaker: And if you are interested in writing a cookbook or if you
- 3:03Speaker: collect cookbooks, I've even heard people tell me this when
- 3:06Speaker: they come up to visit me at events where I'm selling my
- 3:09Speaker: cookbooks, that they don't need any more cookbooks.
- 3:12Speaker: I want you to know that you're not alone.
- 3:14Speaker: I have an email that I send out
- 3:15Speaker: to my email list, and one of the
- 3:17Speaker: titles of the email was there
- 3:19Speaker: are too many cookbooks, and it's
- 3:22Speaker: always the email topic that I
- 3:24Speaker: get the most responses from
- 3:25Speaker: people who want to write
- 3:26Speaker: cookbooks.
- 3:27Speaker: Because what I'm here to talk about today is not to tell you
- 3:30Speaker: that there are too many cookbooks, and not to convince
- 3:33Speaker: you that there are too many cookbooks, because I really
- 3:36Speaker: don't believe that that is true.
- 3:38Speaker: Because after some soul searching and reflection, I soon
- 3:41Speaker: realized that there is plenty of room for cookbooks.
- 3:45Speaker: There's plenty of space for cookbooks, and that's what I
- 3:49Speaker: want to talk about today.
- 3:50Speaker: I don't think we've ever heard
- 3:52Speaker: anybody say there's too many
- 3:53Speaker: romance novels, too many cozy
- 3:55Speaker: mysteries, too many children's
- 3:57Speaker: books.
- 3:58Speaker: Too many self-help books, too
- 4:00Speaker: much historical fiction or
- 4:01Speaker: business books.
- 4:02Speaker: Marketing books.
- 4:03Speaker: The only people that really
- 4:04Speaker: think that that's true are
- 4:05Speaker: people that genuinely, genuinely
- 4:07Speaker: do not like that genre of book,
- 4:10Speaker: or people who want to write
- 4:11Speaker: those books.
- 4:12Speaker: If we were to set out to write a
- 4:14Speaker: romance novel, or a cozy
- 4:15Speaker: mystery, or a children's book,
- 4:17Speaker: or a self-help book, or a
- 4:19Speaker: historical fiction, or a new
- 4:20Speaker: business book or a new marketing
- 4:22Speaker: book, we truly might think the
- 4:24Speaker: same thing.
- 4:25Speaker: We may start to think, oh, there's already too many of
- 4:27Speaker: those books anyway.
- 4:29Speaker: Why would I ever need to add to
- 4:32Speaker: this pile of business or
- 4:34Speaker: marketing books or historical
- 4:35Speaker: fiction?
- 4:36Speaker: But what I like to think about, though, is that we only really
- 4:41Speaker: start to see this plethora of cookbooks as a reason not to
- 4:47Speaker: write the book, instead of truly a reason to write it.
- 4:50Speaker: What if the fact that there are
- 4:52Speaker: so many cookbooks out there is
- 4:54Speaker: the best reason to write a
- 4:56Speaker: cookbook?
- 4:56Speaker: Because the fact that they're out there and they're still
- 5:00Speaker: printed and they're published and they're selling should be
- 5:04Speaker: something that says to us, hey, this is a book that people are
- 5:07Speaker: interested in because I want you to remember something.
- 5:11Speaker: Every single person that is alive needs to eat.
- 5:15Speaker: It doesn't matter how old you are, how big you are, how small
- 5:19Speaker: you are, what your sex is, what you identify as, what the color
- 5:24Speaker: of your skin is.
- 5:25Speaker: Whether you eat meat or whether you eat vegetables, it makes no
- 5:28Speaker: difference at all.
- 5:30Speaker: Every single human on the face of this earth needs to eat, and
- 5:33Speaker: food touches everyone's life.
- 5:36Speaker: And there may come a time in
- 5:38Speaker: someone's life when they don't
- 5:40Speaker: care about cookbooks, when all
- 5:41Speaker: of a sudden they are diagnosed,
- 5:44Speaker: perhaps with a chronic illness,
- 5:46Speaker: or they suddenly have a desire
- 5:47Speaker: to cook more at home, they maybe
- 5:49Speaker: want to save money on their
- 5:51Speaker: groceries.
- 5:52Speaker: They want to prepare better meals.
- 5:54Speaker: They want to have a healthier body.
- 5:56Speaker: They want to connect more with family and friends.
- 5:59Speaker: They want to learn about a new technique, and all of a sudden
- 6:02Speaker: that person that faces this particular issue or desire will
- 6:08Speaker: reach out to cookbooks to help teach them something that will
- 6:12Speaker: help them heal or learn or have fun in the kitchen.
- 6:16Speaker: So with all these eaters out
- 6:17Speaker: there, and with the realization
- 6:19Speaker: that a cookbook could help them
- 6:21Speaker: with something that they need
- 6:22Speaker: books about how to prepare
- 6:23Speaker: vegetables, how to reduce
- 6:25Speaker: fasting blood sugar, how to make
- 6:27Speaker: cupcakes, how to use air fryers,
- 6:29Speaker: how to have fun planning a
- 6:31Speaker: week's worth of meals, how to
- 6:32Speaker: save money on grocery store
- 6:33Speaker: expenses.
- 6:34Speaker: These kinds of things matter
- 6:36Speaker: because people are always
- 6:37Speaker: looking new.
- 6:38Speaker: People are always looking for updated and relevant information
- 6:41Speaker: on these types of topics.
- 6:44Speaker: And a lot of people, just like
- 6:46Speaker: you, like to buy cookbooks, to
- 6:47Speaker: read them, to learn about
- 6:50Speaker: something new or a new culture,
- 6:52Speaker: or a new food, or a new take on
- 6:54Speaker: things.
- 6:55Speaker: Even when you're someone that genuinely loves cookbooks.
- 6:58Speaker: So there's never too many cookbooks.
- 7:01Speaker: And I also want to say that our
- 7:03Speaker: perspective as cookbook writers
- 7:05Speaker: really matters.
- 7:06Speaker: I just went through an exercise where I'm looking at cookbooks
- 7:09Speaker: that are coming out this fall, people that I want to interview
- 7:12Speaker: on on the podcast, I'm receiving emails from public relations
- 7:17Speaker: people at publishing houses, and I want to tell you that the
- 7:21Speaker: topics of cookbooks are not that much different than they've
- 7:25Speaker: always been, but they're being written by new people.
- 7:27Speaker: We have baking books, we have
- 7:29Speaker: vegan books, we have cookie
- 7:31Speaker: cookbooks.
- 7:31Speaker: We have some debut authors, which is very exciting, I think.
- 7:35Speaker: I love talking to debut authors,
- 7:37Speaker: so there's always someone out
- 7:38Speaker: there that this is their first
- 7:39Speaker: cookbook.
- 7:40Speaker: We have more sheet pan work.
- 7:42Speaker: We have books about different
- 7:45Speaker: kinds of equipment, and I did a
- 7:47Speaker: whole podcast on all the
- 7:48Speaker: different stories we tell in
- 7:49Speaker: cookbooks.
- 7:50Speaker: But I just want you to remember
- 7:51Speaker: that your perspective on a topic
- 7:53Speaker: matters.
- 7:54Speaker: Even if a hundred other people have written a cookie cookbook
- 7:58Speaker: and you love cookies and you want to write a cookie cookbook.
- 8:01Speaker: Your perspective on the topic
- 8:03Speaker: matters, and my perspective on
- 8:06Speaker: the topic matters, and someone
- 8:08Speaker: else's perspective on the topic
- 8:10Speaker: matters.
- 8:11Speaker: Because you know what?
- 8:12Speaker: We can't each reach all the
- 8:15Speaker: people that need to heal or
- 8:18Speaker: learn or want to have fun in
- 8:19Speaker: their kitchen.
- 8:20Speaker: Any of us individually cannot do this alone, so we kind of have
- 8:24Speaker: to do it together.
- 8:25Speaker: And I really think that
- 8:26Speaker: cookbooks offer this opportunity
- 8:28Speaker: for us collectively to impact
- 8:30Speaker: people with our books in a real
- 8:33Speaker: way, because food that people
- 8:36Speaker: eat becomes part of their bodies
- 8:38Speaker: and part of the life that
- 8:40Speaker: they're living, and part of
- 8:41Speaker: their life experience in a way
- 8:43Speaker: that other books never will be
- 8:45Speaker: able to.
- 8:46Speaker: They could feel better when they eat the food that you talk about
- 8:50Speaker: in your cookbook.
- 8:51Speaker: They could experience food in a new way.
- 8:53Speaker: Their family could experience food in a new way.
- 8:56Speaker: They could have some fun.
- 8:57Speaker: They could learn something new.
- 8:59Speaker: Our books really, truly impact people, and cookbooks do in a
- 9:03Speaker: multitude of way.
- 9:05Speaker: So yes, there are tons of cooks.
- 9:07Speaker: There are tons of things to
- 9:08Speaker: learn, lots of things for us to
- 9:11Speaker: teach.
- 9:12Speaker: But if we don't write the books,
- 9:13Speaker: that's going to help people when
- 9:15Speaker: they need it, who's going to do
- 9:17Speaker: it?
- 9:18Speaker: If we all sit around and think
- 9:19Speaker: that there's too many cookbooks
- 9:20Speaker: being written and there's
- 9:21Speaker: already too many books written
- 9:23Speaker: and there's already too much,
- 9:25Speaker: then we aren't motivated to want
- 9:27Speaker: to continue.
- 9:28Speaker: So even if others are writing books for the people, and you
- 9:32Speaker: see them now being published and now being for sale, and you're
- 9:35Speaker: going to see more this fall, and I'm going to talk to more
- 9:37Speaker: cookbook writers on the podcast.
- 9:39Speaker: It doesn't make any difference.
- 9:41Speaker: There's always more people who
- 9:43Speaker: are eating, who are waiting for
- 9:44Speaker: your perspective on the topic,
- 9:46Speaker: and you have a unique message to
- 9:48Speaker: share with someone who's
- 9:50Speaker: probably a lot like you, shares
- 9:53Speaker: a lot of the same values that
- 9:54Speaker: you share, and there isn't any
- 9:56Speaker: reason that you should stop
- 9:57Speaker: pursuing the thought that you
- 9:59Speaker: could write a cookbook and get
- 10:01Speaker: it published just because you
- 10:02Speaker: think there's too many cookbooks
- 10:03Speaker: out there.
- 10:04Speaker: There are not too many cookbooks out there.
- 10:07Speaker: There's the perfect number of cookbooks out there, and there's
- 10:10Speaker: always room for more.
- 10:12Speaker: So I want this podcast to motivate you to document your
- 10:17Speaker: recipes, document your stories, record what your family does,
- 10:22Speaker: pay attention to everything that you cook and bake.
- 10:25Speaker: Let a cookbook concept unfold.
- 10:27Speaker: And as always, if you are
- 10:30Speaker: interested in writing a cookbook
- 10:31Speaker: of your own, please reach out to
- 10:34Speaker: me.
- 10:35Speaker: Get on my email list.
- 10:36Speaker: You can join that by going to w w w dot cookbook Writers academy

- 10:42Speaker: Signing up for my fun free
- 10:44Speaker: training you'll get on my email
- 10:46Speaker: list, and you'll start getting
- 10:47Speaker: these emails where I start
- 10:48Speaker: talking about cookbooks and
- 10:51Speaker: cookbook writing to people who
- 10:53Speaker: are interested in writing a
- 10:54Speaker: cookbook.
- 10:56Speaker: So thank you to those of you who have responded to this email.
- 10:59Speaker: You were the reason that I
- 11:00Speaker: decided to record this podcast
- 11:02Speaker: episode.
- 11:03Speaker: And thank you to those of you who have written cookbooks, and
- 11:06Speaker: to those of you who buy cookbooks and collect cookbooks
- 11:09Speaker: and have cookbook clubs and support this genre of books.
- 11:13Speaker: There is not too many cookbooks.
- 11:15Speaker: We need more cookbooks.
- 11:17Speaker: We need more people like you to write cookbooks.
- 11:19Speaker: We need to collect cookbooks.
- 11:21Speaker: We need to keep this genre of book alive and thriving.
- 11:25Speaker: And that's exactly why I'm here.
- 11:27Speaker: And I think that's exactly why you're here.
- 11:30Speaker: And I want to thank you again for tuning in to the show today.
- 11:35Speaker: As always, this is your host, Maggie Green.
