- 0:00Speaker 1: The road to football championships, both the collegiate and the
- 0:05Speaker 1: high school levels. Truly Internest begins this week welcoming back
- 0:10Speaker 1: to the program, and of course, if we're doing that,
- 0:12Speaker 1: that means it's time for our weekly conversation with the
- 0:14Speaker 1: editor in chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. That's
- 0:17Speaker 1: Greg Tepper, who has his own road destinations this week.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Do you not?
- 0:23Speaker 3: I do. I'm on Thursday, after doing our little dog
- 0:28Speaker 3: and pony show around here at Dave Campbell's Texas Football,
- 0:31Speaker 3: We're going to load up to Dave Campbellmobile and drive
- 0:34Speaker 3: west on I twenty until we hit Abilene Beautiful Shotwell
- 0:38Speaker 3: Stadium for Wolforth's Friendships taking on Byron Nelson Across regional.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Matchup to open the season.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Because we're here, we made it like we have finally
- 0:50Speaker 3: arrived at the fireworks factory.
- 0:52Speaker 4: There are more.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Than eight thousand Texas high school football games on the
- 0:56Speaker 3: docket over the next seventeen weeks.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Then I'll be I'll be in attendance of one of
- 1:01Speaker 4: them on Thursday night, and it's it's going to be
- 1:04Speaker 4: very exciting.
- 1:05Speaker 1: More important question here is the White Elephant Truck stop
- 1:08Speaker 1: in Cisco still open, because if it is that you
- 1:11Speaker 1: go to, I'm going.
- 1:13Speaker 4: To report back.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I'm presently being bullied by other members of the staff
- 1:18Speaker 3: to stop at Mary's Cafe and straw and on the way.
- 1:22Speaker 3: So we're there there, we will. There may be a
- 1:25Speaker 3: couple of stops. It may take us longer than than
- 1:28Speaker 3: would be a direct route to get to Abilene.
- 1:31Speaker 4: For you know, for cultural purposes, I would say, yeah.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:34Speaker 1: For yeah, I sorted to say Mary's Cafe isn't exactly
- 1:37Speaker 1: on the way, but I can certainly understand the detour
- 1:40Speaker 1: over there. I can certainly understand that for folks who've
- 1:42Speaker 1: never seen the larger chicken fried steak in human existence,
- 1:45Speaker 1: you need only go over to Palipito County and you'll
- 1:48Speaker 1: see it in all in glory there.
- 1:52Speaker 2: You've been there before, right, I have.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Actually never been.
- 1:55Speaker 3: I've I've heard tell Basically, it's it's one of those
- 1:59Speaker 3: things that I think on my Texas bona Fide list
- 2:01Speaker 3: is missing a check mark.
- 2:03Speaker 4: I intend to put that check mark fair on Thursday.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Well, you need to do that, and I will tell
- 2:08Speaker 1: you this again. The argument can be made, and I
- 2:12Speaker 1: understand it, and you've heard it before that while it
- 2:15Speaker 1: may not be the best chicken fried steak in existence,
- 2:19Speaker 1: it's certainly the largest. If you get the big one,
- 2:21Speaker 1: the big one's about sounds of a truck tire. I
- 2:23Speaker 1: wouldn't exactly recommend you go there, even though you have
- 2:27Speaker 1: a healthy appetite like me. The small one would probably
- 2:29Speaker 1: do you. The medium would definitely be more than enough
- 2:32Speaker 1: for you.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I also the other thing about it, and like, if
- 2:36Speaker 3: we are to go to a football game after that,
- 2:38Speaker 3: I don't want to.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Be, as I would say, have the itis.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I would like to be a a little bit mobile,
- 2:45Speaker 3: a little bit able to enjoy myself as opposed to
- 2:48Speaker 3: being splayed out in the middle of the floor of
- 2:51Speaker 3: a Shotwell Stadium press box enjoying my opening night of
- 2:55Speaker 3: seconds high school football wishing I hadn't eaten so much
- 2:58Speaker 3: chicken fried steak.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Okay, well, then the small ones you get your your
- 3:01Speaker 1: go to, then that's the one that's one of yours.
- 3:03Speaker 1: And by the way, if and I don't know if
- 3:05Speaker 1: the White Elephant is still open, but that was used
- 3:07Speaker 1: the in off of I twenty there at Cisco.
- 3:10Speaker 2: That was the stop off.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And you go in there and you have what's called
- 3:12Speaker 1: the trucker special, which is like in Geladas and they
- 3:15Speaker 1: got like crushed FreeDOS over the top of them or
- 3:17Speaker 1: something like that.
- 3:18Speaker 2: So yeah, that's a highway. That's a highway for you.
- 3:22Speaker 1: So all of this to say that the highway to
- 3:26Speaker 1: college and and and high school state championships.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I'll get that back to high school in a moment.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I'm gonna do what I normally do with you, and
- 3:34Speaker 1: that is I removed Texas from the equation. Okay, uh,
- 3:39Speaker 1: And in this case, I'm removing it for probably a
- 3:42Speaker 1: very good reason. And the reason is this, I want
- 3:44Speaker 1: you to pick out the collegiate game involving a Texas
- 3:50Speaker 1: school that most intrigues you this weekend.
- 3:52Speaker 2: So that's why.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Obviously I'm removing Texas Ohio State from the equation. So
- 3:58Speaker 1: I'll be up in Columbus. But because the duty calls.
- 4:01Speaker 1: But for the purposes of this conversation, what outside of
- 4:05Speaker 1: that game has your attention?
- 4:08Speaker 3: That's a fair that's a fair response because otherwise, obviously
- 4:12Speaker 3: Texas and Ohio State, that's going to be that's probably
- 4:14Speaker 3: the game of the week in the nation, let alone
- 4:16Speaker 3: within the state of Texas. But there is plenty of
- 4:19Speaker 3: other really intriguing football going on across the state this
- 4:22Speaker 3: week that I'm very I'm gonna I'm going to be
- 4:24Speaker 3: keeping a close eye on a number of them. One
- 4:26Speaker 3: of them is going on in College Station on Saturday
- 4:30Speaker 3: night when Texas A and M welcomes in a UTSA
- 4:32Speaker 3: team that you know, darn well would love to take
- 4:36Speaker 3: a scout home to San Antonio and would love to
- 4:40Speaker 3: get what would be undisputedly the biggest winning program history.
- 4:43Speaker 3: And by the way, I think they got the capability
- 4:46Speaker 3: to do it. You know, look, they're going to be
- 4:48Speaker 3: a huge underdogs obviously. I mean, this is an AAC
- 4:51Speaker 3: team against an SEC team playing simple on the road.
- 4:54Speaker 4: But we know that Jeff.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Trailer is going to be out there coaching rear end often.
- 4:58Speaker 3: He's going to lay it all out there because he
- 4:59Speaker 3: unders stands what a win like this could mean for
- 5:02Speaker 3: his program. And furthermore, you know, we do.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Have questions about this you team, about the sex't A
- 5:07Speaker 4: and M team.
- 5:08Speaker 3: I want to see exactly how the Marcel Read situation
- 5:11Speaker 3: kind of bears itself out. I want to see, especially
- 5:14Speaker 3: the linebacker situation, what that looks like there with Texas
- 5:17Speaker 3: A and M, and can utsa take advantage of of it.
- 5:21Speaker 3: That's one thing that I'm certainly keeping my eye on.
- 5:24Speaker 3: I am also going to be keeping an eye on
- 5:27Speaker 3: what is going to be happening, I think on Thursday
- 5:30Speaker 3: with Houston welcoming in SFA and obviously, look again Houston's
- 5:35Speaker 3: a big favorite at home, but year two under Willie Fritz,
- 5:38Speaker 3: I would like to see this team look like the
- 5:41Speaker 3: kind of team that is making that step, that is
- 5:44Speaker 3: ready to take that next step in their development, and
- 5:48Speaker 3: against the Stephen of Austin team at the FCS level
- 5:50Speaker 3: that is not a pushover, that is a contender. I
- 5:53Speaker 3: think within their conference. I am interested to see what's.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Going on there. Those are the two that I'm especially
- 5:58Speaker 4: interested in.
- 5:59Speaker 3: And then obviously I think the Friday night one with
- 6:01Speaker 3: Baylor welcoming in Auburn obviously a big big twelve, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 3: a Big twelve versus the SEC matchup, an SEC team
- 6:07Speaker 3: going on the road, an SEC team that I think
- 6:10Speaker 3: is there for the taking. And look, you know, if
- 6:14Speaker 3: you're a big twelve school and like you know, like Baylor,
- 6:17Speaker 3: you don't apologize for getting the SEC win. You just
- 6:20Speaker 3: go out there and you take it and you you
- 6:22Speaker 3: you hang the banner, And so I think for Baylor
- 6:24Speaker 3: that is a really intriguing opportunity to really make a
- 6:28Speaker 3: name for themselves and say, hey, we are in fact
- 6:31Speaker 3: back to where we you know, back near the top.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Of the Big twelve.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Just look, we got a big Week one win against
- 6:38Speaker 3: an SEC squad in Auburn.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Those are the three that really catch my eye.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I agree with all of those choices. Two questions.
- 6:43Speaker 1: One, is your co host Ashley Pickle fired up about
- 6:46Speaker 1: the North Texas opener against the Lamark Cardinals on Saturday.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Yeah, she she hasn't shout up about it.
- 6:53Speaker 3: She's very excited about about what they've got cooking there
- 6:56Speaker 3: at at North Texas. So yeah, I think they think
- 6:59Speaker 3: should be comfortable favorites there. I want to see exactly
- 7:03Speaker 3: what that offense looks like, which is overrun an overhaul
- 7:05Speaker 3: in the off season.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And I would imagine you're probably not that intrigued by
- 7:09Speaker 1: SMU welcoming in East Texas A and M the former
- 7:13Speaker 1: Texas A and M commerce the transitional FCS program.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you know, SMU go out there, take
- 7:21Speaker 3: care of business. I'm really interested just to see the
- 7:23Speaker 3: look on East Texas A and M just because you're right,
- 7:27Speaker 3: they have been commerce for quite some time. It will
- 7:30Speaker 3: be a new look and I'm interested to see what
- 7:32Speaker 3: that looks like. But yeah, SMU should be pretty comfortable
- 7:35Speaker 3: favorites to move to one and on here.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Greg Jepper, editor in chief Tape Campbell's Texas Football Magazine joints,
- 7:41Speaker 1: All right, let's jump to high school. Your preseason pulls
- 7:43Speaker 1: out the top twenty.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Five in six A.
- 7:48Speaker 1: As we always point out that it's a top twenty five,
- 7:50Speaker 1: it's a top ten in the classifications that have divisions
- 7:54Speaker 1: and they don't split into the division still the playoffs
- 7:57Speaker 1: at the six A level, But you know, I look
- 7:59Speaker 1: at at it, I look at the computer rankings from
- 8:02Speaker 1: a friend, Jerry Farest. There's lots of similarities there. How
- 8:05Speaker 1: about your thoughts on this preseason top ten? And that's
- 8:08Speaker 1: South Lake Carol at one, North Crowley two, and of
- 8:11Speaker 1: course they're bound to go different brackets, different directions, and
- 8:14Speaker 1: it's Duncanville, Westlake, North Shore, vandergriff Alan, Katie Lake, Travis
- 8:18Speaker 1: inon Dinesota for the top ten.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yeah, it is a really intriguing kind of top ten,
- 8:25Speaker 3: specifically because you've got this group of teams at the
- 8:28Speaker 3: top that I think would you would Claire cross By
- 8:31Speaker 3: at blue Bloods right, it's a lot of blue bloods.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Obviously North Crowley maybe and vandergriff would be the newest
- 8:37Speaker 3: blue bloods quote unquote of these groups. But they are
- 8:40Speaker 3: of course the reigning state champon deserve our respect and
- 8:42Speaker 3: I'm excited to see what they put out there, especially
- 8:45Speaker 3: in in Week one.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Both of them a very interesting Week one openers.
- 8:48Speaker 3: But there's a couple of teams that I want to
- 8:50Speaker 3: draw your attention to, kind of lower in the top ten,
- 8:52Speaker 3: that I'm very intrigued by. One of them is a
- 8:55Speaker 3: long time program that you know for you know, people
- 8:59Speaker 3: not much you know, don't have to be a high
- 9:02Speaker 3: school football fan for long to remember when Allen was
- 9:04Speaker 3: ruling the roost in six A. I think Allen's back
- 9:08Speaker 3: in a big way, and I think what Lee Wigginson
- 9:10Speaker 3: is building there is maybe a vintage Allen team that
- 9:14Speaker 3: is going to be a legitimate contender. I think in
- 9:17Speaker 3: six A Division one, they are that good. They are deep,
- 9:19Speaker 3: they are talented, They're going to be exceptional defensively.
- 9:22Speaker 4: I'm interested in that.
- 9:23Speaker 3: And the other one is, again you don't have to
- 9:25Speaker 3: think far, go back far when Katie was the Kings
- 9:29Speaker 3: in the Houston area and obviously won the twenty twenty
- 9:31Speaker 3: state championship. People may forget that because I think we've
- 9:34Speaker 3: all kind of tried to push that out of our minds.
- 9:36Speaker 4: But you think about what.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Katie I think has has it's been a minute since
- 9:41Speaker 3: aside from twenty twenty, they kind of ruled the Houston roosts.
- 9:45Speaker 3: North Shore has taken that kind of that mantle as
- 9:49Speaker 3: the program of record in.
- 9:50Speaker 4: The Houston area.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Well, I think Katie's back in a big way, and
- 9:54Speaker 3: I think this might be Gary Joseph's best team in
- 9:57Speaker 3: a decade or so. I'm really excited about. They're very
- 10:00Speaker 3: good in a lot of the Katie ways.
- 10:01Speaker 4: ISAAMH.
- 10:02Speaker 3: McMillan leads the way on the defensive side. Jeremiah Smith
- 10:05Speaker 3: is just an old school linebacker that is going to
- 10:08Speaker 3: be a lot of fun to watch. And they're going
- 10:09Speaker 3: to run the stink and ball and simple and so
- 10:11Speaker 3: that's what really.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Catches my eye.
- 10:13Speaker 3: In the six A top ten, yes, of course, Southlake
- 10:16Speaker 3: Carol Wou've talked about them for quite a while. They'd
- 10:19Speaker 3: fall in that category of maybe a blue blood of
- 10:22Speaker 3: yesteryear that's having a revival. A lot of the usual
- 10:25Speaker 3: suspects there, but especially Alan and Katie.
- 10:27Speaker 4: They may be kind of.
- 10:29Speaker 3: On the upswing, and the trajectory may be such that
- 10:31Speaker 3: this may be a year where they are capital b back.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Okay, all right now before we jump to our six
- 10:37Speaker 1: man previews. To close out of previews, we'll do what
- 10:40Speaker 1: we always do. We always call it the cruelest, meanest
- 10:42Speaker 1: thing we do each week is I give you the
- 10:45Speaker 1: choice of three games, and you tell me which one
- 10:49Speaker 1: really intrigues you, the one that's your most If you
- 10:52Speaker 1: could transport to one and had to be at one,
- 10:54Speaker 1: which would it be?
- 10:54Speaker 2: All right, I'm going to give you the choice of these.
- 10:57Speaker 1: In six A Westlake prosper in UH five A Division one,
- 11:02Speaker 1: simply because of the number one team Alito against Denton Geyer.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I think that's the our telecast on victory plus.
- 11:10Speaker 2: I won't be there obviously. I think Josh Bograd will
- 11:12Speaker 2: be on the call for that, but it'll be that,
- 11:14Speaker 2: all right.
- 11:14Speaker 1: So there's that five A Division two South O'cliff against
- 11:19Speaker 1: from six A north Shore, and then just just is
- 11:22Speaker 1: a bonus for a Division two Carthage kill Gore.
- 11:26Speaker 4: You're yeah, yeah, well that's brutal. We are very back
- 11:34Speaker 4: my friend doing radio.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Okay, the answer is probably Carthage and Killgore, just because
- 11:43Speaker 3: these are just the team that played for state championship
- 11:45Speaker 3: last year in Kilgore and a team that won the
- 11:47Speaker 3: state championship last year in Carthage. And and the star
- 11:50Speaker 3: power here is absurd for a four four a game,
- 11:54Speaker 3: but all four of them are really really interesting. Obviously,
- 11:57Speaker 3: the North Shore South Okcliff game has big name brand potential.
- 12:00Speaker 3: I'm interested to seeing what a new look North Short
- 12:02Speaker 3: team looks like going.
- 12:03Speaker 4: On the road.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Remember this is even Dudley Harris County very often, and
- 12:08Speaker 3: I'm interested except for basically to come to Arlington.
- 12:10Speaker 4: I'm interested to see what they look like. And then
- 12:12Speaker 4: you mentioned.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Alito getting guyer. What does the guy or offense look like?
- 12:16Speaker 3: They're basically a mystery and is this an Alito year
- 12:19Speaker 3: where they are back to their their normal self they
- 12:21Speaker 3: start the year number one? This would certainly kind of
- 12:24Speaker 3: cement themselves as the team to beat in five day
- 12:26Speaker 3: Division one. But then you mentioned the local game, and
- 12:28Speaker 3: of local in you know, air quotes because being played
- 12:31Speaker 3: in Belton and mary Hart and Baylor, but.
- 12:33Speaker 4: Prosper and Westlake.
- 12:35Speaker 3: This is a real take your eye off the ball
- 12:37Speaker 3: type game because I think Prosper might have the best
- 12:39Speaker 3: offensive line in Texas with Baden Crimpen leading the way.
- 12:43Speaker 3: They've got three fbs that commits on the offensive line,
- 12:46Speaker 3: which is insane going up against Maddi Splint and a
- 12:49Speaker 3: defense there led by coach by coach Tony.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Salazar that we know it's going to be good, so
- 12:53Speaker 4: they're all great.
- 12:54Speaker 3: I will go with Carfudge and Kilgore as the game
- 12:57Speaker 3: that that you got to be at. But but it
- 12:59Speaker 3: is a it's a whopper Week one of Texas IG school.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Football, absolutely no question match.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Okay, let's let's move to our six man previews, because
- 13:07Speaker 1: we previewed every classification, so now we're down to one
- 13:11Speaker 1: A six man Division one, one A six man Division two,
- 13:14Speaker 1: the two divisions of six man. Is it too simplistic
- 13:17Speaker 1: to say it's a run it back for both Gordon
- 13:21Speaker 1: and Jaydon in six AD one In six A D two.
- 13:25Speaker 3: It is going to be very hard, I think, to
- 13:29Speaker 3: pick against either of these teams to go to win
- 13:33Speaker 3: another state championship. Obviously be three in a row for
- 13:35Speaker 3: Gordon and then it will be a back to back
- 13:37Speaker 3: for Jayden. I do think that Gordon is a borderline
- 13:42Speaker 3: prohibitive favorite in one A Division one.
- 13:45Speaker 4: I mean they have.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Three potential FBS guys there with Ry Reid who is
- 13:51Speaker 3: committed to Army, Striker Reid who's committed to Air Force,
- 13:55Speaker 3: and now Brad Walters their wide receiver. Who you talk
- 13:57Speaker 3: with coach Mikereed, he'll tell you that they might be
- 13:59Speaker 3: the best. He might be invest of the bunch. Now
- 14:01Speaker 3: they have a really interesting first week test against the
- 14:03Speaker 3: Richland Springs team that could be on that short list.
- 14:06Speaker 3: And one A Division two two up in Jaydon is
- 14:08Speaker 3: a good Jaydon team with Sean Standalon their quarterback back,
- 14:11Speaker 3: the coach's kid leading the way. But I do think
- 14:14Speaker 3: that there are two legitimate threats to the throne. I
- 14:18Speaker 3: think for Jaydon one of them is Lemisa Klondike, coached
- 14:21Speaker 3: by Dalton de Graff and Red and he's only like
- 14:23Speaker 3: twenty eight and driving me nuts. I covered him in
- 14:26Speaker 3: high school. But he has got a team this year.
- 14:31Speaker 3: They have a they had a really awes non district ship.
- 14:33Speaker 3: I think they started to year like one in four
- 14:35Speaker 3: or zero and four. They ran through a brutal non
- 14:37Speaker 3: district schedule and then got white hot towards the end
- 14:40Speaker 3: took their lumps. I'm interested in Clyde I and they're
- 14:43Speaker 3: Richland Springs, Richinald Springs absolutely fascinating this year for a
- 14:47Speaker 3: couple of reasons.
- 14:48Speaker 4: One of them, they're very very good guys like Billy.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Cohen, Billy Cohen Lee in the Way or Billy Perry
- 14:53Speaker 3: and Cohen athrisly in the Way. But also who's coaching them,
- 14:57Speaker 3: because you may remember a few years ago Jerry Burkhardt.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Was suspended for three years. That was three years ago.
- 15:04Speaker 4: But we do not know.
- 15:05Speaker 3: It is an open question as to who is going
- 15:07Speaker 3: to be coaching Richland Springs this year. You know, we
- 15:11Speaker 3: understand that Sean Rodger is the guy who's been there
- 15:13Speaker 3: coach in the last few years. That's what we think
- 15:15Speaker 3: it's to me, But there is there the chance that
- 15:17Speaker 3: that you've got, you know, one of the most decorated
- 15:19Speaker 3: coaches in the six man football history just wandering up
- 15:22Speaker 3: to the sideline and coaching the Coyos this year. So
- 15:25Speaker 3: fascinating there and I think one A Division two probably
- 15:29Speaker 3: the road to Arlington is more treacherous for Jaydon than
- 15:32Speaker 3: it is from Gordon, who looks like the clear team
- 15:34Speaker 3: the people won a Division one.
- 15:35Speaker 1: You know what, maybe maybe I did six man at
- 15:38Speaker 1: the service. Maybe in those games that I made you
- 15:40Speaker 1: choose one, maybe I should have included Gordon versus Richland
- 15:43Speaker 1: Springs this week.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Hey, I'll throw another one at you. Is I believe
- 15:50Speaker 4: Do I have this correct?
- 15:50Speaker 3: I believe Abbott is opening the season against Ogle Speed again,
- 15:54Speaker 3: which is a terrific top five matchup in six man
- 15:58Speaker 3: as well.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Fascinating.
- 16:00Speaker 3: The thing about six man is that all these teams,
- 16:03Speaker 3: they're all these coaches that there's just not enough teams
- 16:06Speaker 3: for you to run away.
- 16:07Speaker 4: From from our money, So like you're going to.
- 16:10Speaker 3: End up with some absolutely wropper first round or for
- 16:14Speaker 3: you know, non district matchups, and and week one is
- 16:16Speaker 3: chopped full of them.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Final thing I want to get to here, Uh, I've
- 16:21Speaker 1: been meaning to ask you this for for about two
- 16:23Speaker 1: or three weeks now, and keep forgetting to do it.
- 16:25Speaker 1: But I'm going to do it because you're your Your
- 16:27Speaker 1: staff did a very good job of presenting multiple opinions, perspectives,
- 16:36Speaker 1: and and and comments on this whole issue of whether
- 16:42Speaker 1: the state championship should remain at AT and T Stadium.
- 16:46Speaker 1: There are those who have San Antonio's interest at heart
- 16:49Speaker 1: and talk about that in the Alamodome.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Uh, there're those who talk about the n.
- 16:52Speaker 1: RG and in Houston and uh, you know those kinds
- 16:55Speaker 1: of things. So I'm curious to get your thought as
- 16:59Speaker 1: the US starts to settle again, because to me, it
- 17:03Speaker 1: seemed like a FATA complete that we would ultimately see
- 17:06Speaker 1: or hear that the u I L has has reupted
- 17:10Speaker 1: with Jerry World again and that it's going to continue there.
- 17:12Speaker 1: But until it's official, it didn't official. So how about
- 17:15Speaker 1: your thoughts on all of that.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Yeah, so I think you're hearing the same rumblings that
- 17:20Speaker 3: I am, that that there is a deal that is imminent,
- 17:23Speaker 3: therefore an extension to the existing deal for the state
- 17:27Speaker 3: champions to remain at AT and T Stadium in Arlington.
- 17:30Speaker 3: I will tell you, and I know you know this,
- 17:32Speaker 3: that the that the Oil likes playing at and T Stadium,
- 17:35Speaker 3: playing a simple and they don't. They don't rotate. You'll
- 17:38Speaker 3: notice that other UIL state championships don't rotate, like the
- 17:42Speaker 3: soccer Sea Championship are always in Georgetown, you know, the
- 17:45Speaker 3: baseball state championships always in round rock.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Uh, they they don't rotate them.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Obviously, football is a different beast than a lot of
- 17:52Speaker 3: those other UIL sports.
- 17:54Speaker 4: And I think that one of the things.
- 17:56Speaker 3: That I have learned throughout the course of this debate
- 17:59Speaker 3: is I understand where people are coming from. They're saying, Hey,
- 18:02Speaker 3: why should a team from Why should when Galena Park
- 18:04Speaker 3: Northshore plays Duncanville every single year? You know, theoretically, why
- 18:08Speaker 3: does Galena Park North Shore always have to go on
- 18:11Speaker 3: the road and drive up the road while Duncanville get
- 18:13Speaker 3: to sleep in their bed? And I understand what they're saying.
- 18:16Speaker 3: There's a couple of things. I think it's just not
- 18:18Speaker 3: quite as simple as that. Specifically, and this is the
- 18:21Speaker 3: this gets into real nerdy stuff here, but the locker
- 18:24Speaker 3: room situation at these stadiums are not equal. The locker
- 18:28Speaker 3: room situation specifically at a teen and T stadium was
- 18:32Speaker 3: it's essentially a stadium built to host the event because
- 18:35Speaker 3: they've got multiple full sized locker rooms that you can
- 18:39Speaker 3: bring in the team that's playing in a three o'clock
- 18:42Speaker 3: game while the eleven o'clock game is going on, and
- 18:44Speaker 3: you don't have to move the teams that are currently
- 18:46Speaker 3: playing out of their locker room. That's one thing that
- 18:48Speaker 3: I think is going on there. I think there need
- 18:51Speaker 3: to be some renovations to the Alamo now for that
- 18:54Speaker 3: to happen as well. I know that that was a
- 18:56Speaker 3: real sticking point when it was at NRG in two
- 18:59Speaker 3: thousand fifteen. I understand, and we did a survey of
- 19:04Speaker 3: coaches on Texas Football dot Com and the to be clear,
- 19:07Speaker 3: a plurality of coaches, about forty five percent of coaches
- 19:10Speaker 3: wanted to remain permanently of AT and T Stadium, but
- 19:13Speaker 3: there is a decent minority about a twenty to twenty
- 19:16Speaker 3: five percent of coaches we surveyed that said they would
- 19:19Speaker 3: like to see a rotation between between the three Dome stadiums,
- 19:22Speaker 3: and so I think the UIL will continue to listen
- 19:25Speaker 3: to them, but for now, it does feel like they're
- 19:28Speaker 3: comfortable they're at AT and T Stadium, and until I
- 19:31Speaker 3: think there are some renovation to those other stadiums that
- 19:34Speaker 3: make the UH operational part of it a little bit
- 19:38Speaker 3: more equal, I think.
- 19:39Speaker 4: They're gonna they're they're happy there.
- 19:40Speaker 1: In Ireland, Yeah, I would say this if there was
- 19:43Speaker 1: either on the north side of the I thirty five
- 19:46Speaker 1: corridor of the Greater Austin area, or the east side
- 19:48Speaker 1: off the two ninety, or the south side if there
- 19:50Speaker 1: was a thirty thousand seat dome stadium there, the state
- 19:54Speaker 1: championships would be in Austin every year and we would
- 19:56Speaker 1: never hear anything more about it, simply because they'd like
- 19:59Speaker 1: to have them in the headquarters city.
- 20:01Speaker 2: As you laid out, whatever possible.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Yeah, they like being in Austin, they like they understand
- 20:07Speaker 3: the central location of it. But it's also worth mentioning that,
- 20:11Speaker 3: like to your point, if we did this study a
- 20:13Speaker 3: couple of years ago, that if you take all the
- 20:16Speaker 3: UIL member schools and you put together, the average distance
- 20:20Speaker 3: to the three dome stadiums, AT and T Stadium is
- 20:24Speaker 3: the most central, is the most central on average, and
- 20:26Speaker 3: is the most central to the most number of teams.
- 20:29Speaker 3: And so that I think, I think, like we think
- 20:33Speaker 3: of a lot about Houston driving to DFW and San
- 20:35Speaker 3: Antonio driving DFW, and I get that, but there's a
- 20:37Speaker 3: whole West Texas guys at West Texas at and T Stadium.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Is the closest for those teams.
- 20:43Speaker 3: I think we kind of take for granted how far
- 20:46Speaker 3: south San Antonio is and how far.
- 20:48Speaker 4: East Houston is.
- 20:50Speaker 3: DFW is a little bit more central. I think of
- 20:52Speaker 3: the three stadium it is the most central to the
- 20:56Speaker 3: most number of teams.
- 20:57Speaker 4: I think that's appealing to the UIL as all well.
- 20:58Speaker 1: And we'll put it in as simplest too, the fans,
- 21:02Speaker 1: fans of the Panhandle schools stay away from Houston and
- 21:06Speaker 1: San Antonio and droves if their school is not in it,
- 21:09Speaker 1: as evidenced by more than one hundred thousand fans if
- 21:13Speaker 1: you were in attendance at the twenty fifteen games at
- 21:16Speaker 1: NRG as opposed to the ones at AT and T Stadium.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Yeah, the numbers, and I know that there is some concerns,
- 21:24Speaker 3: certainly because the numbers the past couple of years have
- 21:27Speaker 3: been slipping. I think that you look, I don't want
- 21:31Speaker 3: to get into a whole thing, but part of that
- 21:33Speaker 3: is certainly the teams that were playing this past year.
- 21:36Speaker 3: For example, Vandergrats a terrific story, but a young program,
- 21:40Speaker 3: and they just don't have a ton of alumni, right
- 21:43Speaker 3: Richmond Randall a thirty year varsity program, they have essentially
- 21:46Speaker 3: no alumni base, and so.
- 21:48Speaker 4: I think that's part of it.
- 21:49Speaker 3: I don't necessarily thinks all it's only one thing.
- 21:52Speaker 4: I know the UI else paying attention to it.
- 21:54Speaker 3: But I also think that AT and T Stadium feels
- 21:57Speaker 3: like the place that they're the most comfortable and right now,
- 21:59Speaker 3: from an operational and a centralized location, it is I
- 22:03Speaker 3: think the best option.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Yeah, he's great, Tepper, Editor in chief Dave Campbell's Texas
- 22:06Speaker 1: Football magazine, Happy season, my friend. We'll look forward to
- 22:09Speaker 1: reviewing week one and talking about your new rankings and
- 22:13Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. In other words, will be
- 22:15Speaker 1: in regular season mode next week.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Oh, I'm so excited and I am excited for you
- 22:20Speaker 3: to be on our show on Thursday and ask you
- 22:22Speaker 3: a mean question.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Listen, one more thing before I let you go.
- 22:25Speaker 1: I want to give you a chance to promote now,
- 22:28Speaker 1: because I've made mention of this, and I know you
- 22:31Speaker 1: have on social media, and I know it's going to
- 22:32Speaker 1: be a shock to the system for a lot of
- 22:35Speaker 1: Texas high school football fans that the show that you
- 22:38Speaker 1: and I were such a central part of for several
- 22:40Speaker 1: years and that I was a part of for twenty
- 22:41Speaker 1: five years doesn't exist anymore because FanDuel FanDuel Southwest chose
- 22:47Speaker 1: not to put a crew together and pay for it
- 22:50Speaker 1: to do a high school football show, even though it was.
- 22:52Speaker 2: A profit center for them. They're not doing it.
- 22:54Speaker 1: So that show that we used to do, High School
- 22:57Speaker 1: Scoreboard Live is no more. You and I I've kind
- 23:00Speaker 1: of go on different paths. I'm going to be doing
- 23:02Speaker 1: games for Victory Plus, but you and Ashley pick have
- 23:05Speaker 1: it more than an able substitute coming up this fall.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I really appreciate. We're excited.
- 23:11Speaker 3: It's Dave Campbell's Texas Football Tonight. It is going to
- 23:14Speaker 3: be scores, highlights and analysis from across the state from
- 23:17Speaker 3: folks at Daved Campbell's Texas Football, Ashley Pickle, and myself
- 23:20Speaker 3: bringing you hopefully what you come to expect from a
- 23:23Speaker 3: Friday night shows.
- 23:24Speaker 4: That's what we're aiming for.
- 23:26Speaker 3: You know, you and I of course had such a
- 23:28Speaker 3: great time there on High School Scoreboard Live. I'm very,
- 23:32Speaker 3: very excited about Dave Campbell's Texas Football Tonight. We like
- 23:35Speaker 3: to think of it as hopefully picking up the torch
- 23:37Speaker 3: and continuing that tradition of outstanding Friday night recap show,
- 23:41Speaker 3: and we're excited to do at ten thirty pm Friday night.
- 23:44Speaker 3: The great thing is free wherever you stream, whether it's YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
- 23:50Speaker 3: on Dave Campbell's textan live.
- 23:52Speaker 4: We're very excited about that.
- 23:53Speaker 3: So ten thirty pm Friday night, lock in for your
- 23:56Speaker 3: your statewide recap show from David Campbell's Texas Football.
- 23:58Speaker 2: I'll be locked in for I'm a hotel in Columbus, Ohio.
- 24:02Speaker 4: I'm looking forward to my friend.
- 24:03Speaker 2: All right, thanks, we'll talk to you next week. All right.
- 24:07Speaker 1: That is Greg Chapper, editor in chief Dave Campbell's Texas
- 24:09Speaker 1: Football magazine, coming up a conversation with Colin Simmons when
- 24:13Speaker 1: we continue on thirteen under the Zone
