- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 98 — can you believe it? Lucas: I know, right? We've come a long way. Last time we were at the beach learning about der Strand and das Meer. Luna: That was fun. But today, I think we need to talk about something a bit less sunny. Lucas: Oh? What do you mean? Luna: Well, I woke up this morning feeling awful. My throat hurts, I'm sneezing — I think I'm getting sick. Lucas: Oh no. That's the perfect reason to learn how to talk about being sick in German. So let's start simple: 'I am sick' is 'Ich bin krank.' Luna: Ich bin krank. Lucas: Exactly. 'Ich bin krank.' Say it again. Luna: Ich bin krank. Lucas: Good. Now, if you have a cold, you say 'Ich habe eine Erkältung.' Luna: Ich habe eine Erkältung. Lucas: Yes. Eine Erkältung — that's a cold. So Luna, do you have a cold? Luna: Ich habe eine Erkältung. Definitely. Lucas: And if you have a cough, it's 'Ich habe Husten.' Luna: Ich habe Husten. Lucas: And a runny nose is 'Ich habe Schnupfen.' Luna: Ich habe Schnupfen. That's me today, for sure. Lucas: And if you feel cold, like you have chills, you say 'Mir ist kalt.' Luna: Mir ist kalt. Oh, that's useful. I'm always cold. Lucas: Let's do a quick scene. Imagine you're at the doctor's office. You walk in and the doctor asks, 'Was fehlt Ihnen?' What's wrong? Luna: Then I say: Ich bin krank. Ich habe eine Erkältung, Husten und Schnupfen. Und mir ist kalt. Lucas: Perfect. You just described all your symptoms in German. Luna: It feels good to be able to say that. But you know what also feels good? That this podcast is ad-free. Lucas: Yeah, and that's thanks to listeners who support us. If you're finding these episodes helpful, you can keep them ad-free by visiting buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Every little bit helps us keep making episodes exactly like this one. Lucas: Alright, back to symptoms. So we have 'Ich bin krank' and 'Ich habe eine Erkältung.' Let's practice these again. Luna: Ich bin krank. Ich habe eine Erkältung, Husten und Schnupfen. Lucas: And if you have a fever, you can say 'Ich habe Fieber.' Luna: Ich habe Fieber. That's another one we learned before, right? Lucas: Yes, in episode 82. So now you can combine them: 'Ich bin krank. Ich habe Fieber und Husten.' Luna: Ich bin krank. Ich habe Fieber und Husten. Lucas: Excellent. And if someone asks you 'Geht es dir gut?' — are you okay? — you can say 'Nein, mir ist kalt.' Luna: Nein, mir ist kalt. That's honest. Lucas: Let's do one more round. I'll say the English, and you say the German. 'I have a cold.' Luna: Ich habe eine Erkältung. Lucas: 'I have a cough.' Luna: Ich habe Husten. Lucas: 'I have a runny nose.' Luna: Ich habe Schnupfen. Lucas: 'I feel cold.' Luna: Mir ist kalt. Lucas: And 'I am sick.' Luna: Ich bin krank. Lucas: Perfect. You've got it. Now if you ever need to use these, you'll be ready. Luna: I hope I don't need them too soon, but at least I can say it now. Lucas: That's the spirit. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time for more German. Luna: Bis dann! Und gute Besserung — get well soon!
