1:12
SPEAKER_00: And the funny thing is, this was not planned.
1:14
SPEAKER_00: I'm also drinking coffee with never too much Kahlua.
1:18
SPEAKER_02: I can't go by a washing machine after this.
1:20
SPEAKER_02: So then you will need to be drunk for that shit, too.
1:24
SPEAKER_02: Well, I was gonna say I have to somewhat function because God knows I'd come home with a pony instead.
1:30
SPEAKER_00: I don't see a problem.
1:31
SPEAKER_00: But okay.
1:34
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
1:35
SPEAKER_00: Hot takes.
1:37
SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I'm watching it and I kind of want to say, Oh, I knew it, but I'm like, no, I didn't know it because I know they're gonna fuck with it's gonna be a mind fuck.
1:46
SPEAKER_02: Well, you text me, and then and that's why I was like, Did you finish the episode?
1:50
SPEAKER_02: Because I I I was like, This bitch did not finish the episode.
1:54
SPEAKER_02: I was like, she jumped on one.
1:55
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you had like one little buzzword, and she and I could in her head, meaning like no, I when as I was figuring that the wheels in your head were like, I knew it, I knew it.
2:08
SPEAKER_02: I've been saying this all along, I knew it.
2:10
SPEAKER_00: And I was like, This bitch didn't know it.
2:11
SPEAKER_00: She's not done with the episode.
2:13
SPEAKER_00: No, because I figured that they were all like I was like, they're all dead, they're all dead.
2:16
SPEAKER_00: And I was like, okay, no, they're not, because proving me right is not what lost does.
2:22
SPEAKER_00: Well, at least we've got that straight.
2:24
SPEAKER_00: So I knew that wasn't it, but as I'm watching it, I had like a I don't want to say a memory, but something like in the back of my head, I'm like, I feel like I've mentioned Dante's Well, we have we have I have mentioned it.
2:38
SPEAKER_00: It I don't know if you or the notes, but I can and I can't remember specifically neither can I know that it has come up and something about this episode, something it was a scene, something was said, something, and it it jogged my memory.
2:53
SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh, I feel like this is, you know.
2:56
SPEAKER_00: Um, but that was really no hot takes.
2:59
SPEAKER_00: I feel like there was a lot of um some gas lighting involved.
3:03
SPEAKER_00: Well, because well, but um but yeah.
3:08
SPEAKER_02: She I don't know what she's doing.
3:09
SPEAKER_02: She's like fucking wet the laces on her shirt.
3:12
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the trying to be co-see for me.
3:14
SPEAKER_02: Oh, baby.
3:15
SPEAKER_02: Are you opening it or closing it?
3:16
SPEAKER_02: What are you doing?
3:17
SPEAKER_00: Oh okay, so the strings weren't straight and it was really bothering me.
3:20
SPEAKER_00: So I just had to like clean it up a little bit.
3:23
SPEAKER_00: I can't see.
3:24
SPEAKER_00: Um, but um but really didn't have any hot takes per se, but we do know I thought he was like a a semi-god.
3:34
SPEAKER_00: I know like the gods.
3:35
SPEAKER_00: Right.
3:38
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
3:40
SPEAKER_02: And okay, no more clapping.
3:42
SPEAKER_02: Because you did that a lot in the last episode, and I can't take them out.
3:46
SPEAKER_02: Okay, you were like, I fucking knew it.
3:49
SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, fuck, fuck, fuck.
3:52
SPEAKER_00: Okay, all right.
3:53
SPEAKER_00: I would someone's gonna have to like hold my hands while I'm talking.
3:58
SPEAKER_00: Um so the whole immortal thing that was kind of obvious.
4:05
SPEAKER_00: Who gave it to Richard?
4:07
SPEAKER_00: I mean, obviously, but he never aged, but how and the whys and the I don't know.
4:15
SPEAKER_00: But now you know, and now we know, and no one halves the battle, but I'm still like thank you, GM, good, evil, well.
4:25
SPEAKER_02: Well we got a lot more than just how does Richard not age from this episode?
4:33
SPEAKER_00: His whole backstory.
4:34
SPEAKER_02: We've got his whole backstory, we've got a little bit more detail about the purpose, maybe for lack of a better word, but the what the island is.
4:51
SPEAKER_00: The purpose of the island is.
4:53
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
4:54
SPEAKER_02: So that's why I was like, this is a good episode.
4:57
SPEAKER_02: It's a little bit different from the format that we've been seeing, but I like it.
5:02
SPEAKER_02: I think it filled in some gaps.
5:04
SPEAKER_02: I enjoyed it.
5:05
SPEAKER_02: And now we know how the statue went from statue to foot.
5:12
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
5:13
SPEAKER_00: Did you think oh I had a brain for it?
5:16
SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
5:16
SPEAKER_00: I watched like 12 hours, I watched it like 24 hours ago.
5:19
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know.
5:20
SPEAKER_00: So so long ago.
5:22
SPEAKER_00: Should I watch the wave crash?
5:24
SPEAKER_00: Now, if I watched it like 10 years ago, I would be on point.
5:28
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe.
5:29
SPEAKER_02: Oh, it was like and I think and I think the biggest lesson of this episode is once again, greed fucking kills.
5:37
SPEAKER_02: The doctor.
5:38
SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean, yeah.
5:39
SPEAKER_02: Okay, can we can we just talk about there's one Hippocratic oath, right?
5:44
SPEAKER_02: There is only one.
5:45
SPEAKER_02: I think that there should be two, and we should know which one you chose when we see you.
5:51
SPEAKER_02: It's like first do no harm or first get paid.
5:53
SPEAKER_00: Because which there should only be one, and you should adhere to that one.
5:58
SPEAKER_02: Yes, but we know that that is not how that works.
6:01
SPEAKER_02: So which stamp on your head and say, like, Hippocratic Oath One, Hippocratic Oath Two.
6:09
SPEAKER_02: Get paid or first do no harm.
6:11
SPEAKER_02: Because you just can't do both ways.
6:13
SPEAKER_00: Like, which degree did you have?
6:15
SPEAKER_00: And then have like, okay, means your degree.
6:17
SPEAKER_00: Okay, so number two, all right.
6:20
SPEAKER_00: I only go say when I'm healthy.
6:24
SPEAKER_02: You're the best doctor there is.
6:26
SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
6:26
SPEAKER_02: I feel like only if you get paid up front.
6:30
SPEAKER_02: Flashbacks.
6:31
SPEAKER_02: Richard, Tenerife, Canary Islands, 1867.
6:36
SPEAKER_02: Ricardo rides his horse to the remote house where his wife Isabella is laying in bed with a high fever and is coughing blood.
6:45
SPEAKER_02: He's like, I need a doctor, but he's kind of poor.
6:49
SPEAKER_02: So his wife gives him the necklace, the gold cross, and she wants him to give it to the doctor as payment.
6:56
SPEAKER_02: Richard is hesitant, but she says, Close your eyes.
7:01
SPEAKER_02: And she whispers, they'll always be together, and she kisses him on the cheek.
7:04
SPEAKER_02: He promises he'll save her and he leaves.
7:07
SPEAKER_02: He rides through the night, through the storm to get to the doctor's house.
7:11
SPEAKER_02: He gets there, he's soaked, he's tired, he's scared, he's everything that a man who loves his husband would be.
7:17
SPEAKER_02: And he's like, please, doctor, save.
7:21
SPEAKER_00: You said a man who loves his husband.
7:24
SPEAKER_02: A man who loves his wife.
7:25
SPEAKER_00: You said husband.
7:27
SPEAKER_02: A husband who loves his wife.
7:28
SPEAKER_02: I don't know, whatever.
7:29
SPEAKER_02: Or a man who loves his husband.
7:31
SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
7:32
SPEAKER_00: You're gonna read back these attitudes like that, bitch.
7:35
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm gonna be right.
7:37
SPEAKER_02: But you know what?
7:38
SPEAKER_02: Even a man who loves his husband, that's right.
7:40
SPEAKER_02: Which is right, but not applicable to the scene.
7:43
SPEAKER_02: All right, all right, all right.
7:46
SPEAKER_02: And the doctor is like, uh, you're wedding my floor.
7:51
SPEAKER_02: Because that's what's important.
7:53
SPEAKER_02: He they bring out blankets and was like, they're not for you.
7:57
SPEAKER_02: I know you're soaked and you're cold and you're everything, but like the floor, okay.
8:02
SPEAKER_02: The wife who needs to be saved, wife, is a half a day's journey away because she's in Socorro, and the doctor's like, Yeah, that's too far.
8:12
SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
8:13
SPEAKER_02: But I'll give you this medicine.
8:15
SPEAKER_02: And he's like, Okay, but give me the money.
8:17
SPEAKER_02: But Richard doesn't have enough money, so the doctor's like, well, fuck your wife.
8:21
SPEAKER_02: And then Richard gets mad, and they're fighting over the medicine, and by accident, the doctor falls, he hits his head, and he's dead.
8:31
SPEAKER_02: He takes the medicine and goes home because you know, the guy's already dead, so take your own fucking medicine.
8:37
SPEAKER_02: But he's caught, he's the wife is dead, he's caught, he's thrown in jail.
8:42
SPEAKER_02: He's like, I need absolution because you know I'm a good Catholic.
8:48
SPEAKER_02: And the priest is like, yeah, I don't care, it was an accident, but like, no, you don't get any.
8:54
SPEAKER_00: This episode was full of people who do not follow their oaths.
9:01
SPEAKER_00: They're the doctor, the priest, no one, and I think it's quite it clicks in with the entire episode when Jacob explains the purpose of the island.
9:14
SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh, they're not no, there is still good in people, and they're not, you know, they're gonna do the right thing.
9:20
SPEAKER_00: And meanwhile, back at the farm, Richard got here because people did not do the right thing.
9:27
SPEAKER_00: So I like how that they tie that all in.
9:29
SPEAKER_00: See, I was paying attention.
9:31
SPEAKER_02: Look at you paying attention.
9:36
SPEAKER_02: The they explained to Richard that he should have to do penance, but he's not gonna have time because he's gonna be hung the next day.
9:45
SPEAKER_02: But because he is teaching himself to read, because him and his wife were planning to go to the new world and start a new life, start a family, he's quote, saved.
10:00
SPEAKER_02: You know, can you can you hear my quotes?
10:02
SPEAKER_00: I can hear your quotes.
10:04
SPEAKER_02: Yes.
10:05
SPEAKER_02: So because he knows English and he's willing to work, now Richard is property of Magnus Hansel, and that's a name that we've heard before.
10:17
SPEAKER_00: Have we?
10:18
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
10:20
SPEAKER_00: Refresh my memory.
10:21
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
10:22
SPEAKER_02: Every time that we've seen the auction and Charles Whidmore, remember the journal of the and the Dharma Initiative, you Hansel Foundation?
10:36
SPEAKER_00: Yes, I remember now.
10:37
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
10:37
SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
10:38
SPEAKER_02: All right.
10:39
SPEAKER_02: On the Black Rock, Richard and the other slaves are in chains below death.
10:44
SPEAKER_02: Ship is caught in a storm.
10:46
SPEAKER_02: They're looking out and they're like, uh it's dark.
10:49
SPEAKER_02: I see the devil.
10:50
SPEAKER_02: The devil, meaning the statue of I'm gonna butcher it.
10:55
SPEAKER_02: Ta Taurette.
10:57
SPEAKER_02: Okay, that sounds good.
10:58
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
10:59
SPEAKER_00: That sounds good.
11:00
SPEAKER_02: But you know the statue.
11:02
SPEAKER_02: The statue where Jacob lives.
11:06
SPEAKER_02: But the ship is carried up on a big giant wave, it's crashed right through the statue, and now we know how one the statue is down to just a four-toed foot, and how the ship is in the middle of the jungle on the island now.
11:24
SPEAKER_02: Richard and his captives wake up.
11:27
SPEAKER_02: It's like, where are we?
11:30
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
11:32
SPEAKER_02: But the crewman comes down and he's like, the captain is dead, only five officers are alive, and also I'm gonna kill you guys because you know, supplies are scarce, and you know, you'll you'll kill me too.
11:44
SPEAKER_02: So boom, boom, boom.
11:47
SPEAKER_02: And did you did you have captions on when you watched?
11:51
SPEAKER_00: I mean, with the um the subtitles may sleep with Spanish.
11:56
SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no.
11:56
SPEAKER_02: But like if you put the captions on, every time.
11:58
SPEAKER_00: Oh, the regular captions, no.
12:00
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
12:00
SPEAKER_02: Every time he he did it with the sword, it says squish.
12:10
SPEAKER_02: Fun fact if you keep the captions on while you watch TV, TV becomes educational, and my kids actually became very good readers that way.
12:22
SPEAKER_02: So just in case you want to make yourself feel better about letting your kids have screen time, put the captions on.
12:27
SPEAKER_02: Now it's educational.
12:28
SPEAKER_00: I started, you told me that like a while ago, and I started doing that when Axel and Angel are over when they're watching TV.
12:35
SPEAKER_02: No, it's honestly it really does help.
12:38
SPEAKER_02: It does help.
12:40
SPEAKER_02: But just as he's about to kill Richard, something happens.
12:44
SPEAKER_02: They hear chaos above deck, screams, and then silence.
12:49
SPEAKER_02: And we all know that silence is more scary than screams.
12:52
SPEAKER_00: Oh gosh, yes.
12:53
SPEAKER_02: The black smoke comes through, grabs the guy, pulls him through, and then the black smoke comes down, it's all around Richard's face, and then it leaves.
13:06
SPEAKER_02: Then we get scenes now.
13:09
SPEAKER_02: Richard is alone, he's still chained, he's trying to get a nail loose, he's trying to pull the um the chain off of the wall.
13:19
SPEAKER_02: He passes out, he's trying to get the water that's dripping in, but this is brutal.
13:26
SPEAKER_02: And and we don't know how many days, but we can tell that it's been days.
13:32
SPEAKER_02: But then one of these days, uh Isabella comes and she wakes him up and she says that she looked the devil in the eye and only saw evil.
13:43
SPEAKER_02: She wants to know if Richard saw too.
13:45
SPEAKER_02: He says he thinks he did, and she says that she's gonna free him before the devil returns, but she can't.
13:53
SPEAKER_02: But then we hear the monster, and he's like, You need to go.
13:58
SPEAKER_02: And she runs, and then the monster comes back, and it's like, don't you know?
14:02
SPEAKER_02: Haven't you oh wait, it's 1867, they don't have TV.
14:05
SPEAKER_02: I was like, Don't you know every time you see one person and then the other person leaves the room and then the other person comes in, they're the same person, but they don't have TV yet.
14:13
SPEAKER_02: I forgot.
14:16
SPEAKER_02: Don't they have stories with that?
14:18
SPEAKER_02: Alright, whatever.
14:20
SPEAKER_02: Okay, all right, Agnes.
14:23
SPEAKER_02: She screams, there's more noise, and now Richard is like that shit because he's like, My wife is Abella.
14:30
SPEAKER_02: But sometime later, the man comes to Richard and he gives him water and he's like, Hey, who are you?
14:36
SPEAKER_02: He's like, I'm a friend.
14:37
SPEAKER_02: That's your first.
14:39
SPEAKER_00: They're never your friend.
14:41
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
14:41
SPEAKER_00: The ones that say they're your friends are never your friend, Lisa.
14:45
SPEAKER_00: Let me stop.
14:48
SPEAKER_02: When somebody says, Who are you?
14:50
SPEAKER_02: and they don't say, Oh, hi, I'm Lisa.
14:52
SPEAKER_02: Right.
14:53
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm a friend.
14:54
SPEAKER_02: No, you're not.
14:55
SPEAKER_02: No, no.
14:56
SPEAKER_02: Keep it moving.
14:57
SPEAKER_00: That's rule number two.
14:58
SPEAKER_00: One, you don't break, you don't.
15:00
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, my brain shut down.
15:02
SPEAKER_00: Rule number one is that you don't split up.
15:05
SPEAKER_00: Rule number two, they're never a friend.
15:09
SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
15:37
SPEAKER_02: Richard is like, yeah, uh, I'm in hell.
15:40
SPEAKER_02: And the guy who is the man in black says, Yeah, you are.
15:45
SPEAKER_02: He says that he's been there a long time.
15:47
SPEAKER_02: Richard wants to know about Isabella, and he explains that he has her, implying that she was captured by the devil.
15:56
SPEAKER_02: Richard begs to be freed so he can save her.
15:58
SPEAKER_02: And the man in black says, he will help, but he also wants to be free.
16:03
SPEAKER_02: He says, Oh, look, I found these keys.
16:06
SPEAKER_02: He'll probably unlock you.
16:08
SPEAKER_02: But before I do, I know you've been chained here for maybe a week and you've had nothing to eat, and only this pitiful sip of water that I got, and you're desperate to save your wife.
16:19
SPEAKER_02: But I really want you to do something for me first.
16:23
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
16:24
SPEAKER_02: And that doesn't sound evil to you?
16:25
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, seriously.
16:27
SPEAKER_00: That's suspicious.
16:29
SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
16:30
SPEAKER_02: What I want is for you to promise that you'll do anything that I ask you.
16:36
SPEAKER_02: I mean, what are your choices?
16:37
SPEAKER_02: Say say no and then just continue to lie there and die?
16:43
SPEAKER_02: I mean, really.
16:44
SPEAKER_02: Rock, hard place, Richard.
16:47
SPEAKER_02: So he unlocks the chains and he says, it's good to see you out of those chains.
16:53
SPEAKER_02: Which is a call back to I forgot what episode it was, but when Locke sees the case.
17:02
SPEAKER_00: Yes, I remember, I remember that.
17:03
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
17:03
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
17:05
SPEAKER_02: He carries Richard out of the Black Rock and explains that the only way to escape from hell is to kill the devil.
17:12
SPEAKER_02: As they're eating a boar, the man in black directs him to the statue and tells him that that's where he's gonna find the devil.
17:19
SPEAKER_02: He gives him an ornate dagger, and we've seen that before.
17:24
SPEAKER_02: That's the one that Dogen gave to Saeed.
17:28
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the the god-killing dagger.
17:32
SPEAKER_02: Yes.
17:32
SPEAKER_02: And he says that you have one chance and you must not hesitate or let him speak because if he speaks, it'll already be too late.
17:44
SPEAKER_02: Richard is like, but how could I kill the devil if he smoke?
17:48
SPEAKER_02: But the man in black is like, actually, it's me.
17:52
SPEAKER_02: It's me.
17:52
SPEAKER_02: I'm the black smoke.
17:53
SPEAKER_02: Ha ha.
17:54
SPEAKER_02: Uh sorry, I didn't tell you that before, but yeah, no, it's me.
17:57
SPEAKER_02: He's the devil.
17:57
SPEAKER_02: Get him.
17:59
SPEAKER_02: He claims that the devil betrayed him and stole his body and his humanity.
18:06
SPEAKER_02: I feel like this is something I heard in real life right now, but um he explains that Isabella was not running from the black smoke, but from the devil.
18:18
SPEAKER_02: He says he saw her take Isabella but couldn't stop him, and he deflects questions about murdering the ship's officers and ref and requesting Richard commit murder, saying that if Richard wants to see his wife again, he must hurry up.
18:32
SPEAKER_02: Richard goes towards the statue, but before he can get there, Jacob attacks him.
18:38
SPEAKER_02: He asks whether Richard he asks whether Richard met the man in black, and Richard explains that the man in black said the only way he could see his wife again was if he killed Jacob.
18:49
SPEAKER_02: Jacob says the person he saw was not his wife, that he is not dead, and also you're not in hell.
18:56
SPEAKER_02: Richard is unconvinced, so Jacob is like, all right, let me help you.
19:01
SPEAKER_02: And he drags him into the sea and tries to drown him.
19:04
SPEAKER_02: After submitting him submitting him.
19:07
SPEAKER_02: After submerging him four times, he says, Do you think you're still dead?
19:11
SPEAKER_02: Why should I stop?
19:12
SPEAKER_02: And then Richard says, Because I want to live.
19:15
SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's what we should do with people who don't believe in truth.
19:22
SPEAKER_02: Until they're like, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I believe in climate change.
19:26
SPEAKER_02: I believe in science.
19:28
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
19:29
SPEAKER_02: On the beach, the two sit together.
19:33
SPEAKER_02: Jacob says he's not the devil, and he explains that he brought the black rock to the island.
19:38
SPEAKER_02: Rachel wants to know why.
19:40
SPEAKER_02: And Jacob uses a bottle of wine as a metaphor.
19:44
SPEAKER_02: The wine is evil malevolence.
19:48
SPEAKER_02: The bottle is containing it because otherwise it would spread.
19:52
SPEAKER_02: He explains that the cork represents the island holding the darkness where it belongs.
19:59
SPEAKER_02: Jacob says the man in black believes everyone can be corrupted because it is in their nature to be bad, and that he, Jacob, brings people here to prove the man in black wrong.
20:11
SPEAKER_02: When questions on whether or not Jacob has brought people to the island in the past and what happened to them, Jacob says, Yeah, I have, and now they're all dead.
20:21
SPEAKER_02: But, you know, I want people to know the difference between right and wrong without being told.
20:28
SPEAKER_02: This would never pass an ethics test for psychological experiments.
20:33
SPEAKER_02: But I guess, you know, in the 1800s it was all cool.
20:37
SPEAKER_00: So I mean, honestly, I think where we're went like right now, the world we're living in, this would be like the go-to experiment people would do.
20:48
SPEAKER_00: But probably more egregious.
20:50
SPEAKER_02: I know a few people I like to send to an island.
20:56
SPEAKER_00: I think we're living in an experiment that's gonna ride.
21:00
SPEAKER_02: Sometimes I think so.
21:02
SPEAKER_02: Like, I feel like we're living in an experiment just to see how stupid people are, except that it's not an experiment, and we're going to, we are failing, and the consequences are for everyone, not just the failures.
21:17
SPEAKER_02: Richard says that if Jacob won't help these people, then the man in black will step in.
21:22
SPEAKER_02: Jacob thinks on that a moment and then offers Richard the job of being his representative.
21:27
SPEAKER_02: And he's like, Well, if I can't intervene, you can.
21:32
SPEAKER_02: You can do it on my behalf.
21:35
SPEAKER_02: Richard says in return, he wants his wife back.
21:38
SPEAKER_02: Jacob's like, nope, no, no, no, nope, nope, can't do that.
21:42
SPEAKER_02: He's like, All right, cool.
21:43
SPEAKER_02: Absolve me of all my sins.
21:44
SPEAKER_02: Can't do that either.
21:45
SPEAKER_02: He's like, but I don't want to go to hell.
21:47
SPEAKER_02: And Jacob is like, uh, you know, just try again.
21:51
SPEAKER_02: So he says, okay, well, I don't want to die because I'll go to hell, so how about I just live forever?
21:55
SPEAKER_02: Jacob's like, bingo, I could do that.
21:57
SPEAKER_02: You got it.
21:58
SPEAKER_00: That whole thing was kind of comical.
22:01
SPEAKER_00: The back and forth.
22:02
SPEAKER_00: I'm just like, okay, what is life right now?
22:05
SPEAKER_02: He touches him on the shoulder and says, You got it, dude.
22:14
SPEAKER_02: Stop.
22:14
SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to read.
22:16
SPEAKER_02: Well, stop being funny.
22:18
SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
22:19
SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
22:20
SPEAKER_02: Richard returns to the man in black who realizes that Richard did not kill Jake.
22:25
SPEAKER_02: Jacob and correctly guesses that he let Jacob talk to him.
22:29
SPEAKER_02: Richard is like, by the way, Richard, uh, Jacob asked me to give you this, and it's a white rock.
22:36
SPEAKER_00: The man in black tells.
22:38
SPEAKER_00: I'm watching the scene.
22:39
SPEAKER_00: I'm like, we are all fucked and over here playing Othello.
22:42
SPEAKER_00: Like, you know.
22:44
SPEAKER_00: What is that?
22:45
SPEAKER_02: What if that's what's happening right now?
22:47
SPEAKER_02: Like Batgammon.
22:48
SPEAKER_02: Remember back from the beginning?
22:50
SPEAKER_02: Oh, right.
22:51
SPEAKER_02: Backgammon, yes.
22:52
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
22:53
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
22:53
SPEAKER_02: We got these two guys, okay?
22:55
SPEAKER_02: It's like, na na na na na and meanwhile, the world around them is burning.
23:00
SPEAKER_00: I feel like that's what we're living in now.
23:01
SPEAKER_02: Isn't really Othello's the gang where you just black and one is white.
23:04
SPEAKER_00: We got isn't Batgammon the one, not Batgammon.
23:07
SPEAKER_00: Othello's the one with like the this black side and the white side, and you flip it, you have to like change all your pieces to your color.
23:12
SPEAKER_00: Something like that.
23:13
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
23:13
SPEAKER_02: I mean, I never knew how to play, but you simply playing that.
23:16
SPEAKER_00: Okay, so make sure the name is.
23:17
SPEAKER_02: If you play it on the computer where it's like the computer just does the work and I just randomly guess at shit.
23:22
SPEAKER_02: I don't know how to play.
23:23
SPEAKER_02: I don't know how to play backgammon either, but I know backgammon was the game that they played.
23:28
SPEAKER_02: I think I don't know, but I'm pretty sure.
23:33
SPEAKER_00: No, it is because we read it in the show notes.
23:36
SPEAKER_00: So we've read it in the in like the I'm glad you remember something.
23:40
SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure it was backgammon.
23:44
SPEAKER_00: You're like, yes.
23:45
SPEAKER_00: And I have no idea what I'm doing, but yes.
23:49
SPEAKER_00: Pretty much.
23:53
SPEAKER_02: The man in black tells Richard that his offer of joining him will stand.
23:58
SPEAKER_02: He gives Richard the pendant and disappears.
24:00
SPEAKER_02: He's like, Yeah, I found this here.
24:02
SPEAKER_02: Richard buries the wife's pendant and cross at the base of a stone bench and a small little sapling and says goodbye to his love.
24:11
SPEAKER_02: Now we're gonna talk about the man in black.
24:15
SPEAKER_02: After his meeting with Richard, the man in black is seated on a log overlooking a valley of trees.
24:22
SPEAKER_02: While tossing the white stone, Jacob joins him.
24:26
SPEAKER_02: Jacob asks about the gift of the stone.
24:28
SPEAKER_02: He's like, Hey, you got my gift?
24:30
SPEAKER_02: And the man in black says, Don't gloat.
24:33
SPEAKER_02: Jacob asks whether the man in black sent Richard to kill him.
24:37
SPEAKER_02: And he says, I did because I want to leave this island.
24:41
SPEAKER_02: And please let me go.
24:43
SPEAKER_02: And Jacob says, Well, as long as I'm alive, that's not gonna happen.
24:48
SPEAKER_02: The man in black says, That's why I'm gonna kill you.
24:52
SPEAKER_02: Jacob is like, Alright, well, somebody else will replace me.
24:55
SPEAKER_02: And the man in black says, that's okay, I'll just kill them too.
25:00
SPEAKER_02: Jacob doesn't argue.
25:01
SPEAKER_02: It's like, well, here's here's a bottle of wine.
25:06
SPEAKER_02: Pass the time.
25:08
SPEAKER_02: Get drunk, what else is there to do?
25:10
SPEAKER_02: We're here forever.
25:12
SPEAKER_02: Jacob leaves.
25:14
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, right.
25:15
SPEAKER_02: Shit, if I could make wine.
25:17
SPEAKER_02: Jacob leaves, saying he'll see him around, and the man in black says to himself, sooner than you think, and then he smashes a bottle.
25:26
SPEAKER_02: In another flashback, we see Ilana in the hospital.
25:30
SPEAKER_02: Now we've seen her with her face bandaged and Jacob visiting her.
25:34
SPEAKER_02: They speak in Russian.
25:35
SPEAKER_02: Jacob, uh, Ilana is very happy to see Jacob and he's asking for help.
25:40
SPEAKER_02: Jacob explains that there are six people that she is to protect, and that their names will be on his list.
25:48
SPEAKER_02: He explains that this is what she has been preparing for her whole life, and that the six are the remaining candidates.
25:58
SPEAKER_02: Sometime later, Ilana is speaking with Jacob.
26:00
SPEAKER_02: She's no longer bandaged, and she asks what she should do after she has brought them to the temple.
26:06
SPEAKER_02: Jacob says to ask Ricardo, who will know what to do next.
26:13
SPEAKER_02: So those pieces are now fit into the puzzle.
26:18
SPEAKER_02: Now on the island, present day at the beach camp, which is how the show opened, because the whole thing is Richard Richard's backstory, but it starts here.
26:34
SPEAKER_02: Jack, Curly, son, Frank, Miles, Ben, and Ilana are gathered around a campfire.
26:38
SPEAKER_02: It's like it would be nice if it wasn't so fucked up.
26:42
SPEAKER_02: But it's like all you need is like a guitar and some marshmallows.
26:47
SPEAKER_00: Seriously, I I want a good shmoor, shmoor.
26:49
SPEAKER_02: And maybe some of that Jacob wine, but Richard stands nearby.
26:55
SPEAKER_02: Ilana and son explain that son, Jack, Hurley, son, Jack, and Hurley are candidates to replace Jacob.
27:02
SPEAKER_02: Frank says, all right, well, what are we supposed to do now?
27:05
SPEAKER_02: And Ilana says she doesn't know, but that Richard should know.
27:08
SPEAKER_02: Richard starts laughing like ridiculously and says he has no idea.
27:15
SPEAKER_02: He says he was trying to kill himself.
27:17
SPEAKER_02: And when Ilana brings up Jacob's instructions, Richard says that everything Jacob has ever said is a lie.
27:23
SPEAKER_02: Jack asks for an explanation, because of course he does.
27:26
SPEAKER_02: And Richard says he will reveal a secret that he has known a long time.
27:31
SPEAKER_02: He says all of them are literally dead, and that everything around them is not what it appears.
27:37
SPEAKER_02: They're not on an island.
27:38
SPEAKER_02: They are in hell.
27:40
SPEAKER_02: Richard says it's time, it's time to stop listening to Jacob and time to start listening to someone else.
27:46
SPEAKER_02: And he takes a flaming torch and heads into the jungle.
27:50
SPEAKER_02: He's like, Yeah, I'm out of here.
27:51
SPEAKER_02: Screw you guys, I'm going home.
27:54
SPEAKER_02: Planning to go after him, Alana loads her rifle but is interrupted by Jack, who says Richard has lost his mind and that if he cared about what Jacob said, he wouldn't be talking about listening to someone else.
28:04
SPEAKER_02: Jack says, Jack asks who Richard means.
28:09
SPEAKER_02: And son means son.
28:13
SPEAKER_02: Son explains he means Locke.
28:17
SPEAKER_02: Now, Jack doesn't know.
28:19
SPEAKER_00: Becky hasn't been there for that part.
28:22
SPEAKER_02: Jack is like, uh, Locke is dead.
28:24
SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Captain Obvious.
28:25
SPEAKER_02: And Ben is like, well, if it helps, it's not exactly Locke.
28:31
SPEAKER_02: I swear, Ben, Ben gets the some of the best lines, like the best.
28:36
SPEAKER_00: I think they're the best lines because of his delivery, too.
28:40
SPEAKER_02: Right, right, right.
28:41
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
28:42
SPEAKER_00: I love it.
28:42
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a Ben is honestly one of the best characters in the whole show.
28:46
SPEAKER_00: I love, you know what?
28:47
SPEAKER_00: Even when I didn't like him, I liked him, if that makes sense.
28:50
SPEAKER_02: No, he does an amazing job with the character.
28:54
SPEAKER_02: Hurley is off to the side speaking Spanish to an invisible someone.
28:58
SPEAKER_02: And you hear Hurley say, Okay, what can you do?
29:00
SPEAKER_02: Yes, I can help you.
29:02
SPEAKER_02: I don't know how to find him.
29:03
SPEAKER_02: I don't know where he went.
29:05
SPEAKER_02: Jack is like, You're speaking to Jacob.
29:07
SPEAKER_02: What are you saying?
29:08
SPEAKER_02: And Hurley is like, um, it's not Jacob and it's got nothing to do with you.
29:12
SPEAKER_02: And he leaves.
29:13
SPEAKER_00: Mind beeswax.
29:15
SPEAKER_02: Basically.
29:17
SPEAKER_02: He says, Nunya.
29:18
SPEAKER_02: Ben says to Ilana that going after Richard is useless because he doesn't know anything.
29:25
SPEAKER_02: She isn't sure.
29:26
SPEAKER_02: And Ben replies that he's known Richard since he was 12.
29:29
SPEAKER_02: Frank is like, oh, how cute.
29:31
SPEAKER_02: You guys known each other since you were a kid.
29:33
SPEAKER_02: Ben is like, well, I was a kid.
29:37
SPEAKER_02: Not Richard.
29:40
SPEAKER_02: He looked just like this.
29:42
SPEAKER_02: You know, those 40-year-old, 12-year-olds.
29:48
SPEAKER_00: I know a couple of those, though.
29:50
SPEAKER_00: Not at the same way, but they look kind of old as kids.
29:53
SPEAKER_02: Well, in the 80s, you know, we were pretty much wore 30 years old.
29:56
SPEAKER_00: I mean, they were also smoking, too.
29:59
SPEAKER_02: Not I.
30:00
SPEAKER_00: No, not no, not us.
30:01
SPEAKER_00: But there were like, yeah.
30:03
SPEAKER_00: Frank is like a whole group of them smoking at 12.
30:06
SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
30:07
SPEAKER_02: Frank asks if that means that Richard doesn't age, and Ben confirms.
30:12
SPEAKER_02: Frank says, and how the hell do you think that happened?
30:16
SPEAKER_02: And then basically, this is how we get into Richard's uh backstory.
30:23
SPEAKER_02: Now we're in the jungle.
30:25
SPEAKER_02: Richard has been trekking all night, and now it's the next day.
30:28
SPEAKER_02: He returns to the spot in the grassy clearing where he buried Isabella's cross at the base of a stone seat.
30:33
SPEAKER_02: He digs it up.
30:34
SPEAKER_02: He's distraught, and he asks whether the man in black is listening to him and that he's changed his mind.
30:39
SPEAKER_02: He was wrong.
30:41
SPEAKER_02: And he calls out, asking whether the offer still stands.
30:44
SPEAKER_02: But not the man in black, he gets Hurley.
30:47
SPEAKER_02: Hurley walks out of the jungle and asks Richard what offer he is speaking of.
30:52
SPEAKER_02: Richard is amazed that Hurley is there and angrily pushes him away, reminding Hurley that he doesn't know anything.
30:59
SPEAKER_02: Hurley asks him to calm down, and as Richard starts to yell, Hurley snaps that it's Richard's wife, Isabella, who set who has sent him.
31:07
SPEAKER_02: So apparently saying calm down doesn't work on men either.
31:11
SPEAKER_02: Richard reacts in disbelief.
31:14
SPEAKER_02: What?
31:15
SPEAKER_00: It's just funny because it's funny.
31:18
SPEAKER_00: Calm down doesn't work on men either.
31:20
SPEAKER_02: Hurley says she wants to know why Richard bury the cross.
31:24
SPEAKER_02: He tells Richard that she's standing right next to him.
31:28
SPEAKER_02: Isabella says to Hurley that Richard doesn't believe him, and Hurley explains that sometimes it takes a while.
31:35
SPEAKER_02: Richard slowly turns toward where Hurley is speaking.
31:39
SPEAKER_02: Although Richard can't see Isabella, he now addresses her.
31:44
SPEAKER_02: Doesn't he know how tall his wife was?
31:47
SPEAKER_02: He's like looking straight over her head.
31:49
SPEAKER_02: Like, I know you're suppos you're doing that because you're not you're not supposed to be able to see her, but like, but she was five feet in life.
31:57
SPEAKER_02: We now she's five, seven.
31:58
SPEAKER_02: Come on.
32:00
SPEAKER_02: She grew in death.
32:01
SPEAKER_02: You grow.
32:05
SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying, like, if somebody told me Alex was standing right next to me, I wouldn't be like this, I'd be like this, you know?
32:12
SPEAKER_02: Like if somebody was like, oh, your your your cat that you died that died that you loved me back, I would look down.
32:19
SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't look anyway.
32:21
SPEAKER_02: Maybe I know it's wrong, but it's just funny.
32:23
SPEAKER_02: Like you're not wrong.
32:27
SPEAKER_02: Like, you know how tall she is.
32:28
SPEAKER_00: Like it's a love of your life.
32:31
SPEAKER_00: I mean, it has been 200 something years, you know, people change, ghosts.
32:35
SPEAKER_02: Well, it's been a hundred, yeah, a hundred and a hundred and eighteen sixty seven.
32:41
SPEAKER_02: It was eighteen thirty.
32:42
SPEAKER_02: So like 150 years.
32:45
SPEAKER_02: 1867.
32:46
SPEAKER_02: And now it's like 2000.
32:48
SPEAKER_02: Oh, people change perceptions change, ghosts change.
32:55
SPEAKER_02: Ghosts grow.
32:56
SPEAKER_02: 140 years.
32:58
SPEAKER_02: Ghosts grow a few inches.
33:01
SPEAKER_02: When did this take place?
33:02
SPEAKER_02: 20, what, 16?
33:05
SPEAKER_02: What year is it on Island?
33:07
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
33:08
SPEAKER_02: It's 2007, so it's been 140 years.
33:10
SPEAKER_00: Oh, 2007?
33:11
SPEAKER_00: I am so I think my math still maps.
33:16
SPEAKER_00: Your math maps.
33:17
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
33:18
SPEAKER_00: My math doesn't math because, you know, that that I don't need brain cells.
33:23
SPEAKER_02: Hurley says for him to close his eyes and he will tell Richard what she says.
33:28
SPEAKER_02: She says it wasn't his fault for her death, but that it was her time and that he has suffered enough.
33:36
SPEAKER_02: He tells her he misses her and would do anything to be with her again.
33:40
SPEAKER_02: Isabella says that they are already together.
33:43
SPEAKER_02: She kisses him and then is gone.
33:46
SPEAKER_02: I like, I really like the way they did this scene.
33:49
SPEAKER_02: Because even though obviously Hurley is supposed to be translating not just from Spanish to English, but from ghost to human to lie.
34:00
SPEAKER_00: To non-ghost.
34:03
SPEAKER_02: We we it takes that out so that you just get that.
34:07
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I like that.
34:08
SPEAKER_00: I noticed that.
34:09
SPEAKER_00: And I was just like, yeah, that hits.
34:11
SPEAKER_02: That was and then after she's after they're done in that scene, the camera kind of pans past Hurley, and they use that as the mechanism to have her disappear and kind of bring bring you back to like this plane.
34:29
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this plane.
34:30
SPEAKER_00: Non-spectral plane.
34:33
SPEAKER_00: It's not like Ghostbusters.
34:34
SPEAKER_00: It's like Ean.
34:36
SPEAKER_02: Slimers.
34:37
SPEAKER_02: Slimers on the other side of the island.
34:41
SPEAKER_02: Richard puts the cross around his neck and thanks Hurley, who says, Yeah, you got it.
34:46
SPEAKER_02: Hurley reveals that Isabella also said that there's something else that Richard must do.
34:51
SPEAKER_02: Stop the man in black from leaving the island.
34:54
SPEAKER_02: And if Richard doesn't do that, we all go to hell.
35:00
SPEAKER_02: Some distance away, the man in black dressed as Locke, you know, with his.
35:06
SPEAKER_02: Do you remember um oh what fucking movie?
35:10
SPEAKER_02: What what was the movie?
35:11
SPEAKER_02: Oh, Men in Black.
35:13
SPEAKER_02: Oh man in Black.
35:17
SPEAKER_02: Oh what a reach.
35:20
SPEAKER_02: When with the the Edgar suit.
35:26
SPEAKER_02: So now Man in Black is wearing his lock suit.
35:30
SPEAKER_01: I'm an idiot.
35:34
SPEAKER_02: He watches and then turns away.
35:36
SPEAKER_02: Which I thought was also a really good scene because it pans to fake lock watching, but then turns into the flashback of the man in black.
35:50
SPEAKER_00: Right.
35:51
SPEAKER_02: For reading purposes, we didn't do it that way, but yeah.
35:54
SPEAKER_02: But anyway, that's the episode.
35:59
SPEAKER_02: The title of Okay Bye.
36:03
SPEAKER_02: The title of this episode, Ab Eternal, means From Eternity in Latin.
36:08
SPEAKER_02: The phrase is used to mean since the beginning or for long ages.
36:13
SPEAKER_02: The episode of this title is the final one derived from a Latin phrase.
36:18
SPEAKER_02: We also had tabula rasa and deus ex machina.
36:25
SPEAKER_02: This episode marks the first time that a character has referred to Jacob's to this episode This episode marks the first time that a character has referred to the man in black as the man in black.
36:41
SPEAKER_02: When they first meet, Richard asks Jacob whether or not he's the devil, and Jacob replies negatively.
36:49
SPEAKER_02: Mark Pellegrino, the actor, does indeed portray Lucifer in the series Supernatural.
36:56
SPEAKER_02: As of this episode, Henry Ian Cusick, Desmond, has been missing for eight episodes, beating Harold Perrineau's absence in season two for the longest streak of not appearing in an episode while still being a regular.
37:12
SPEAKER_02: It's the longest absence of a main character in the entire series.
37:16
SPEAKER_02: And aside from double-length season premieres and finales, this is the longest episode of Lost with a runtime of 47 minutes and 37 seconds.
37:26
SPEAKER_02: This is the first episode in season six.
37:30
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
37:31
SPEAKER_02: This is the first episode of season six to feature flashbacks instead of flash sideways.
37:39
SPEAKER_02: And the episode opens with the flashback of one character, features a long flashback for a second, and ends with the flashback of another.
37:48
SPEAKER_02: Meaning Ilana, Richard, and then the man in black.
37:52
SPEAKER_02: And this is the first episode since the life and death of Jeremy Bentham to be nearly an entire uninterrupted flashback.
38:00
SPEAKER_02: Book ended by brief on-island sequences at the beginning and the end.
38:04
SPEAKER_02: Jacob tells Richard that when he brings people to the island, their past doesn't matter.
38:09
SPEAKER_02: When you put that in context of our losties, it really puts it in perspective, right?
38:20
SPEAKER_02: You've got people who were so I don't want to say lost because that's not like it's like two on the nose, but you know, people who were who were just struggling.
38:37
SPEAKER_02: I mean, let's name any character.
38:41
SPEAKER_00: Shannon.
38:43
SPEAKER_00: Fucking Shannon.
38:44
SPEAKER_00: Dumbass character.
38:46
SPEAKER_00: Um I know that's why you were because you know just to fuck with you.
38:50
SPEAKER_02: Alright, but Shannon also had issues because her father was married to her evil stepmother, who basically was a fucking cunt.
39:04
SPEAKER_02: And you know, here she was looking for love and acceptance and finding abusive relationships.
39:14
SPEAKER_02: And she came to the island and she found Saeed and then was killed.
39:18
SPEAKER_02: Problem solved.
39:20
SPEAKER_00: But I take the I still I think at one point I was really like, okay, the island's like purgatory.
39:26
SPEAKER_00: I know I said that a couple times like earlier season.
39:28
SPEAKER_00: Because it does make sense.
39:29
SPEAKER_00: And I feel like let's say that like they're all dead.
39:33
SPEAKER_00: They all died.
39:34
SPEAKER_00: But when they died on the island, they went from purgatory, like they they hit, they did what they had to do.
39:40
SPEAKER_00: Echo.
39:42
SPEAKER_00: And like all these people, I feel if I remember correctly, the people who died sooner rather than later, they did what they had to do.
39:51
SPEAKER_00: They made mental like they had no more regrets.
39:54
SPEAKER_00: They whatever they've come to terms.
39:58
SPEAKER_00: I figured their death, they actually went to they moved on.
40:04
SPEAKER_00: That's what whether or not.
40:06
SPEAKER_00: So the fact that they're all dead still makes sense.
40:09
SPEAKER_00: Where they're at, it does make sense.
40:11
SPEAKER_00: Don't know.
40:12
SPEAKER_02: Right.
40:12
SPEAKER_02: It definitely makes sense, which is why it was such a pervasive theory.
40:18
SPEAKER_00: But why, but I but now I'm like, okay, so that can't be the so that can't be the answer.
40:23
SPEAKER_00: So how are they gonna wrap this shit up?
40:25
SPEAKER_00: I feel like because loss is lost, and they're like, we made this, I know I can't wait.
40:30
SPEAKER_00: I feel like we made this such an obvious choice, that can't be the answer.
40:36
SPEAKER_00: So how I so I feel like like how you gonna mind fuck me?
40:40
SPEAKER_00: How are you gonna mind fuck me?
40:43
SPEAKER_00: Richard Oh, it was all the dream, like you know, Dallas.
40:49
SPEAKER_02: Is it um there was another show?
40:53
SPEAKER_02: Was it Bob Newhart?
40:54
SPEAKER_02: It was all the dream.
40:56
SPEAKER_02: Bob Newhart show all right anyway.
40:58
SPEAKER_02: Okay, I was like New Heart.
40:59
SPEAKER_02: Am I crazy?
41:00
SPEAKER_00: Alright.
41:01
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
41:02
SPEAKER_00: No, you're not crazy.
41:04
SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
41:05
SPEAKER_02: Jacob also tells Richard that he cannot interfere with people when they get to the island because he has to let them make their own decisions.
41:11
SPEAKER_02: So this goes back to fate versus free will, and that the island prevents quote hell from getting out and spreading and trying to keep the man in black on the island.
41:24
SPEAKER_02: So it's, you know, all that good versus evil kind of theme.
41:32
SPEAKER_02: In the Vulgate Bible, the episode's title is found prominently in Proverbs 823, also numbers, which reads, Ab, okay.
41:45
SPEAKER_02: Sorry if I butcher this.
41:47
SPEAKER_02: Ab eternal ordita sum et ex antiquis antiquam terra furet.
41:56
SPEAKER_00: This translates Okay, did my furniture just I feel like my try my furniture just levitate it?
42:02
SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
42:02
SPEAKER_02: Either I just spoke Latin or I put some Harry Potter spell.
42:06
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
42:07
SPEAKER_02: NK J V I New King James Version, I guess.
42:13
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
42:14
SPEAKER_02: I have been established from everlasting, from the beginning, before there was ever an earth.
42:21
SPEAKER_02: You know my phone response to Harry Potter?
42:25
SPEAKER_00: That's cute.
42:27
SPEAKER_02: Cultural references is it's mostly Bible.
42:30
SPEAKER_02: So the Gospel of Luke, which is what Richard has seen reading while he is in in the jail.
42:41
SPEAKER_02: And the the verse at the top of the page says, Verily I say unto you, no prophet is accepted in his own country.
42:51
SPEAKER_02: He later casts out a spirit of an unclean demon from a possessed man and heals a woman with great fever.
43:00
SPEAKER_02: We have themes of absolution, which is what Richard is seeking, except that the priest is like no in but except actually the priest could have.
43:09
SPEAKER_02: So I don't know, who gave that priest his license?
43:12
SPEAKER_02: Pugio, Pugio.
43:14
SPEAKER_02: The man in black's dagger is a Roman Pugio.
43:17
SPEAKER_02: On the sheath, there is a depiction of a Roman of the Roman she wolf suckling Remus and Romulans, twin founders of the Eternal City.
43:28
SPEAKER_02: The brothers fought and Remus was killed by his brother.
43:32
SPEAKER_02: You see the theme here?
43:34
SPEAKER_00: I see.
43:34
SPEAKER_00: I know and I already compare them to Cain and Abel.
43:37
SPEAKER_00: Same difference.
43:38
SPEAKER_00: Like yeah, all of the same shit.
43:40
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
43:40
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
43:41
SPEAKER_02: And Stephen King's The Stand.
43:44
SPEAKER_02: The scene where the Man in Black releases Richard is a reference to this work.
43:50
SPEAKER_02: Specifically, the reference is of the part of the novel which Randall Flagg, sometimes known as The Man in Black, releases criminal Lloyd Henry from being trapped in a jail cell.
44:01
SPEAKER_02: Flagg makes Lloyd promise to do exactly what he says.
44:05
SPEAKER_00: I think I would watch the stand again.
44:07
SPEAKER_00: I've never seen it.
44:08
SPEAKER_00: Chalker.
44:09
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
44:10
SPEAKER_00: I just I I knew you saw that.
44:13
SPEAKER_02: No.
44:14
SPEAKER_02: But I have I actually have the book.
44:17
SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's the that's better.
44:18
SPEAKER_00: I mean, you read the book.
44:20
SPEAKER_02: I said I have the book.
44:21
SPEAKER_02: She said I actually no.
44:25
SPEAKER_02: Actually, hold on.
44:26
SPEAKER_02: I realized that I had never read it and I actually ordered it like last week.
44:29
SPEAKER_02: So it came.
44:30
SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's cool.
44:32
SPEAKER_02: I just, you know, I'm not there yet.
44:34
SPEAKER_00: It's sitting, it's literally sitting on my desk, but we're gonna have a special episode one day where we have Lisa.
44:43
SPEAKER_00: We will together make Lisa watch one of the many movies that the rest of the world has seen.
44:50
SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm gonna sit her down.
44:53
SPEAKER_00: I might just just sit her down.
44:54
SPEAKER_00: I like literally my sit on her to make sure she watches it.
45:00
SPEAKER_02: In a little twist of irony, Richard is told by the priest that he has no time left for penance because he's gonna be hung the next or hanged the next day.
45:09
SPEAKER_02: I don't know, whatever.
45:11
SPEAKER_02: But then now he's immortal.
45:14
SPEAKER_02: So now he's got all the time in the world.
45:17
SPEAKER_02: In some blanket irony, Jacob provides a blanket for Richard after submerging him in the surf, but earlier the blankets are ordered for the floor instead of Richard because he was getting the floor wet.
45:32
SPEAKER_02: Also, once again, the character returns with blankets and stumbles upon a murder.
45:39
SPEAKER_02: Whoops.
45:41
SPEAKER_02: Except this time he wasn't killed too.
45:44
SPEAKER_02: Like Libby.
45:46
SPEAKER_02: Remember, she forgot the blankets for the for the picnic for her.
45:50
SPEAKER_02: Oh, right, right, right, right, right, right.
45:53
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
45:54
SPEAKER_02: Hurley dismisses Jack's curiosity about his conversation with the unseen ghost of Isabella.
46:00
SPEAKER_02: But previously, Hurley had chided Jack for not keeping him in the loop.
46:05
SPEAKER_02: And now we see Hurley's growth as like.
46:10
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't care, fuck you.
46:14
SPEAKER_02: Ben mentions meeting Richard at the age of 12 after he was shot.
46:19
SPEAKER_02: This suggests that being immersed in the Temple Spring erased Ben's memory of their first meeting years earlier.
46:28
SPEAKER_02: Do you remember what he's what it's talking about?
46:31
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
46:33
SPEAKER_00: But we figured that he wouldn't remember.
46:35
SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
46:37
SPEAKER_02: And we see the smoke monster scan Richard like it did to Mr.
46:40
SPEAKER_02: Echo and Juliet.
46:44
SPEAKER_02: What do you think the scans are doing?
46:49
SPEAKER_02: Is he like looking to see if they're salty enough for consumption or I have a family friend who, even though she's a dog lover, she likes to tease me because my dog is pit bull.
47:06
SPEAKER_02: And so whenever she licks, she's like, she's just testing to see if you're seasoned right before she eats you.
47:11
SPEAKER_02: I'm like, yeah, I know.
47:13
SPEAKER_00: I think she's I think the smoke monster's testing to see how important they are to Jacob.
47:17
SPEAKER_00: If they're not important, he's like, whatever.
47:20
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
47:21
SPEAKER_00: Or I don't know.
47:23
SPEAKER_00: But he kills other people that are not important.
47:25
SPEAKER_00: Um, let's see.
47:28
SPEAKER_02: Even though yes, I guess you could say, I mean, those people are now dead.
47:35
SPEAKER_02: Not by the hands or the smoke of the smoke monster.
47:39
SPEAKER_00: I mean, they weren't killed by the smoke monster, though.
47:41
SPEAKER_00: And I don't know now.
47:44
SPEAKER_00: I'm just oh, maybe they're just too good and they're I don't like there's no there's nothing in them.
47:50
SPEAKER_00: I don't fucking oh maybe it's not enough good in I don't know.
47:56
unknown: I don't know.
47:56
SPEAKER_00: I think I see smoke coming out of your ears.
47:59
SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
48:03
SPEAKER_00: I know.
48:06
SPEAKER_00: Overload.
48:11
SPEAKER_02: The next oh what the fuck?
48:13
SPEAKER_02: I think the next episode is the package.
48:14
SPEAKER_00: Way too late for that one.
48:15
SPEAKER_02: I hope it's all yours, but no, no, no.
48:20
SPEAKER_02: I was waiting for a joke like that.
48:25
SPEAKER_02: Anyway, okay.
48:27
SPEAKER_02: Next episode, the package.
48:30
SPEAKER_02: We are we are chugging along, we are getting closer to the end.
48:36
SPEAKER_02: And stuff.
48:39
SPEAKER_02: Don't drink and drive.
48:40
SPEAKER_02: Do you have anything else before we wrap up?
48:43
SPEAKER_00: Why is it when I say stuff nope?
48:48
SPEAKER_02: Nope, nope, nope.
48:50
SPEAKER_02: You are all robotic and choppy.
48:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my internet connection is unstable for some unknown reason.
48:59
SPEAKER_00: Um, so this entire episode, I heard you maybe about 40% of the time.
49:06
SPEAKER_02: Awesome.
49:07
SPEAKER_02: If we're lucky.
49:10
SPEAKER_00: This should be a really good episode for you to edit because I didn't talk much.
49:14
unknown: Fuck.
49:15
SPEAKER_02: All right.
49:17
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
49:17
SPEAKER_02: Don't drink and drive.
49:19
SPEAKER_02: Oh, if you remember what we have talked about in the past about Dante's Inferno or anything like that, you can text us because we sure as hell don't remember.
49:32
SPEAKER_02: Not at all.
49:34
SPEAKER_02: And text us, follow us on social media, share our shit, join Patreon, join Buzz Sprout, do all this stuff, help us get to PodFest.
49:45
SPEAKER_02: Just love us because we're needy.
49:47
SPEAKER_02: And also, my birthday is coming up, so that's what I want.
49:52
SPEAKER_02: And until next time, don't drink and drive, drink responsibly.
49:56
SPEAKER_02: Thank you for listening.
49:58
SPEAKER_02: We are almost done with Lost.
50:00
SPEAKER_02: I'm sad.
50:01
SPEAKER_02: Agnes is fucking thrilled.
50:03
SPEAKER_02: And I'm and I'm Agnes, and we're out of here.
50:08
SPEAKER_00: See you later.
50:09
SPEAKER_00: Bye.
