- 2:34Speaker 3: intersection of Patrick Street and Fourth Avenue. That the water
- 2:37Speaker 3: issue has been taken care of, however, the road situation
- 2:41Speaker 3: not so much, so I'm gonna get into that a

- 2:55Speaker 3: Starting us off this morning. Though the debt it's kind
- 2:58Speaker 3: of like what they say about the webb. Everyone talks
- 3:00Speaker 3: about it, but no one wants to do anything about it. Well,
- 3:03Speaker 3: what organization definitely has it on their radar and they
- 3:06Speaker 3: are called the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. The
- 3:09Speaker 3: president of the group is Maya McGinnis and she joins
- 3:12Speaker 3: us now, Maya, good morning and welcome to the show.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Good morning, it's so nice to be with you.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Thank you for being here. First of all, tell me
- 3:19Speaker 3: about the group. How was it founded, who's in it
- 3:22Speaker 3: and what is the mission statement of your organization?
- 3:25Speaker 5: Great, So, it was founded decades ago. I'm only the
- 3:29Speaker 5: second person who's run it. I've been for twenty years.
- 3:33Speaker 5: But it came out of a number of members of
- 3:34Speaker 5: Congress in the eighties early eighties who left frustrated that
- 3:37Speaker 5: they and their colleagues couldn't really act responsibly on the budget.
- 3:41Speaker 5: And I will tell you they were doing a lot
- 3:43Speaker 5: better than in most ways than we are now. What's
- 3:47Speaker 5: unique about it one critically important. We are so bipartisan.
- 3:51Speaker 5: I am a political independent. This is not about politics.
- 3:54Speaker 5: We have people of every stripe on our staff, on
- 3:57Speaker 5: our board, and the board is people who've actually been
- 3:59Speaker 5: in government running the treasury or the FED, or the
- 4:03Speaker 5: budget Committees or OMB or CBO, or a Office of
- 4:07Speaker 5: Management and Budget in the Congressional Budget Office. But they
- 4:09Speaker 5: have been into trenches. They know how hard this work is.
- 4:12Speaker 5: So we try to work with lawmakers in a realistic
- 4:15Speaker 5: way to help them. This is a mission improve the
- 4:18Speaker 5: fifth goal responsibility of this country and what that means.
- 4:21Speaker 5: It's not that you have to balance the budget every year,
- 4:24Speaker 5: but right now we are borrowing for almost everything. We
- 4:28Speaker 5: do not for economic reasons, because sometimes it's okay to borrow,
- 4:32Speaker 5: like during COVID or a recession. We are borring for
- 4:34Speaker 5: political reasons because our politicians just aren't willing to do
- 4:37Speaker 5: the hard work of budgeting, and that has huge dangerous
- 4:42Speaker 5: ramifications for our country, our long term economic health, and frankly,
- 4:46Speaker 5: our national security.
- 4:47Speaker 3: We're talking to Miyam again. I said, the subject is
- 4:50Speaker 3: the federal debt this morning, and I thought it was
- 4:52Speaker 3: interesting for you to start off the segment. I was
- 4:54Speaker 3: going to get into this a little bit later on.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I appreciate you bringing it up about how this is
- 4:57Speaker 3: a nonpartisan organization and and I would agree you're the expert,
- 5:01Speaker 3: not me, but I would agree in theory with what
- 5:03Speaker 3: you said that a part of the reason we're in
- 5:05Speaker 3: the shape we're in now is because everybody wants to
- 5:08Speaker 3: get a victory. You know, they all have, the Republicans
- 5:11Speaker 3: and Democrats. I mean, they're all pointing fingers. It's his fault,
- 5:14Speaker 3: it's her fault. Whatever. In the end, though, it comes
- 5:17Speaker 3: out on the taxpayers. And explain to our listeners this morning,
- 5:20Speaker 3: they hear all this talk about the debt, why should
- 5:23Speaker 3: they care about this maya?
- 5:25Speaker 5: And that is really the big challenge of this issue,
- 5:27Speaker 5: because people are struggling with the fact that healthcare is
- 5:31Speaker 5: not affordable, saving for retirement, putting their kids through college,
- 5:34Speaker 5: job in security, so many things going on. And you
- 5:38Speaker 5: don't see the direct effects of the national debt. But
- 5:41Speaker 5: what it does is it flows our economic growth. So
- 5:45Speaker 5: the point is today we are all making less than
- 5:49Speaker 5: we would have if we hadn't borrowed for so many
- 5:52Speaker 5: frankly dumb things in the past. It brings our standard
- 5:55Speaker 5: of living down. It also means that our interest payments
- 5:58Speaker 5: are the fastest growing part of the budget. It right now,
- 6:00Speaker 5: we spend more on interest than we do on the
- 6:03Speaker 5: national defense as of this year, and we spend more
- 6:06Speaker 5: on interest than we do on all federal spending for children,
- 6:09Speaker 5: so it crowds out other things we might do, whether
- 6:12Speaker 5: those are tax cuts for conservatives or spending increases for
- 6:15Speaker 5: progressives or both. The interest is squeezing out other things.
- 6:20Speaker 5: But it also means we're unable to respond to future
- 6:22Speaker 5: emergencies in a way we might be able to want
- 6:25Speaker 5: to be able to. And we no longer have flexibility
- 6:27Speaker 5: in our budgets. So if we needed to put in place,
- 6:30Speaker 5: say worker retraining because things are changing, because technology is
- 6:34Speaker 5: changing the economy, we don't have the resources available we
- 6:38Speaker 5: would have if we hadn't been borrowing in the past,
- 6:41Speaker 5: and that will only become a bigger squeeze if we
- 6:44Speaker 5: stay on this unsustainable path while we're borrowing like two
- 6:47Speaker 5: trillion dollars every year for the foreseeable future future, that
- 6:51Speaker 5: will just make things even worse. But I know it's hard.
- 6:54Speaker 5: You don't sit down at your kitchen table and worry
- 6:55Speaker 5: about it. I do. But that's why my kids didn't
- 6:58Speaker 5: like having sitting at the kitchen table with kit told.
- 7:00Speaker 5: But it is a real issue that affects everything else
- 7:03Speaker 5: that we care about.
- 7:05Speaker 3: We're talking about him again, this again with the organization
- 7:07Speaker 3: and Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. I do want
- 7:10Speaker 3: to remind you the Dave v Allen Show on five
- 7:11Speaker 3: to eighty Live brought to you in part by Pinnacle Consultants.
- 7:14Speaker 3: There Lead pain Inspection and Risk Assessment services are designed
- 7:17Speaker 3: to identify and to assess the presence of lead based
- 7:20Speaker 3: paints and buildings and other structures using a three phase
- 7:23Speaker 3: approach of inspection, sampling, the lab, analysis, and an assessment
- 7:26Speaker 3: reports Apinnacle Court dot net. Because what you don't know
- 7:29Speaker 3: can hurt you, you use the word sustainability or maybe
- 7:32Speaker 3: a lack of sustainability moving forward, get into that a
- 7:35Speaker 3: little bit more, and you talked about your kids, talk
- 7:38Speaker 3: about what this is going to mean for future generations
- 7:40Speaker 3: if we don't do something.
- 7:42Speaker 5: Absolutely so, our fiscal situation is not sustainable because our
- 7:48Speaker 5: debt is growing faster than our economy. If our economy
- 7:52Speaker 5: were growing faster, we would be okay, we might have
- 7:56Speaker 5: too much debt, but we would be on a trajectory
- 7:58Speaker 5: where things were going to get better. We are on
- 8:00Speaker 5: a trajectory where things are going to get worse. And frankly,
- 8:03Speaker 5: our political environment is such that it's likely to be
- 8:06Speaker 5: even worse than the numbers from the Congressional Budget Office
- 8:08Speaker 5: show us this means for our kids, you know, a
- 8:12Speaker 5: smaller economy than it would otherwise have been a lot
- 8:16Speaker 5: of the more dramatic things I think, and this isn't
- 8:18Speaker 5: as exaggerating, is we are gradually threatening our role in
- 8:22Speaker 5: the world. We may not be the economic superpower, we
- 8:25Speaker 5: may not have as much leverage as we have been
- 8:27Speaker 5: used to, and the debt will be underlying that. But basically,
- 8:30Speaker 5: we are handing our kids a budget where they have
- 8:33Speaker 5: so much to pay an interest, and so many promises.
- 8:36Speaker 5: They won't have the flexibility to deal with their own challenges.
- 8:40Speaker 5: And it's quite clear that younger generations are inheriting a
- 8:44Speaker 5: very complicated world. Whether it's natural disasters or terrorism, or
- 8:50Speaker 5: hot spots around the world or changes from technology, there's
- 8:53Speaker 5: going to be a lot to navigate and they need
- 8:55Speaker 5: to have a budget that allows them to respond nimbly.
- 8:59Speaker 5: But frankly, they will not have that. Sometimes I say,
- 9:02Speaker 5: it's just the same as if we turned to our
- 9:04Speaker 5: kids and said give me one hundred bucks. I want
- 9:06Speaker 5: to spend money right now, but I don't want to
- 9:08Speaker 5: pay for it, so you're going to have to it. Really, obviously,
- 9:11Speaker 5: it's more complicated than that, but it is shifting who's
- 9:15Speaker 5: going to pay for the things we are buying today
- 9:17Speaker 5: onto our kids instead of ourselves. And that's kind of
- 9:20Speaker 5: the opposite of what the American dream is supposed to be,
- 9:22Speaker 5: or relieve a stronger world and country and economy to
- 9:26Speaker 5: the next generation than the one we inherit it currently.
- 9:29Speaker 3: If we keep on this based on what you said
- 9:31Speaker 3: and then some of the reading I've done, if we
- 9:33Speaker 3: keep on this path that we're on now, we're certainly
- 9:35Speaker 3: not going to be doing what we're supposed to do
- 9:37Speaker 3: for future generations. So here's the multimillion dollar maybe i'll
- 9:40Speaker 3: say trillion dollar question for you, miya. How do we
- 9:44Speaker 3: fix this?
- 9:45Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah, we only deal with trillions here. I remember
- 9:48Speaker 5: when it went from billions to trillions, and that was
- 9:51Speaker 5: a bit of a shocker. Listen, these are the things
- 9:54Speaker 5: politicians promise they won't do, but they're the things we
- 9:57Speaker 5: have to do if we're going to get this under control.
- 10:00Speaker 5: We are going to have to raise taxes. Obviously no
- 10:03Speaker 5: one wants that, but we're going to have to, and
- 10:05Speaker 5: not just millionaires and billionaires, We're going to have to
- 10:08Speaker 5: raise real revenue. And we are going to have to
- 10:11Speaker 5: reduce spending. We are spending is at a very high
- 10:15Speaker 5: level right now, much higher than it's been historically. It
- 10:18Speaker 5: is going to continue to grow, and Congress is routinely
- 10:22Speaker 5: appropriating high increases in our spending, and it has automatic
- 10:27Speaker 5: programs that it's not checking and they are growing faster
- 10:30Speaker 5: than the economy. Finally, we have to make changes to
- 10:33Speaker 5: soci security and medicare. I know these are the opposite
- 10:36Speaker 5: of the things that our political candidates are promising us,
- 10:39Speaker 5: but they're pandering. They're telling us what they think they
- 10:43Speaker 5: need to say to win an election, not to guide
- 10:45Speaker 5: the country. But if we don't fix social security, where
- 10:49Speaker 5: the trust funds will run out of resources in less
- 10:51Speaker 5: than a decade, there will be automatic benefit cuts for
- 10:55Speaker 5: every single current retiree. That's unconscionable. There are many things
- 11:00Speaker 5: we can do today to make these changes gradually and
- 11:03Speaker 5: in a shared way where people who depend on the
- 11:05Speaker 5: program aren't affected at all. But by doing nothing, we
- 11:08Speaker 5: are harming the people who depend on the program to
- 11:10Speaker 5: the most. So honestly, it's the opposite of a political slogan.
- 11:14Speaker 5: We need more revenues, we need slower spending so that
- 11:17Speaker 5: we're not borrowing two trillion dollars a year, and we
- 11:20Speaker 5: need to fix social Security and Medicare so we can
- 11:22Speaker 5: honor the promises that we've made instead of hitting a
- 11:25Speaker 5: wall where there are large, abrupt across the board benefit
- 11:29Speaker 5: cuts for everybody which will do real harm.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Well, I appreciate you being here. It's fascinating stuff. Mia
- 11:34Speaker 3: McGinnis is the president of the organization Committee for a
- 11:38Speaker 3: Responsible Federal Budget. Where can people learn more about your organization?
- 11:41Speaker 3: Where can they do some more reading? Give us sand
- 11:43Speaker 3: the info you got there.
- 11:45Speaker 5: Even beyond reading, you can play some games. We have
- 11:48Speaker 5: a lot of interactive tools also, which I think are
- 11:51Speaker 5: fund greatly to have a Friday night party with our
- 11:54Speaker 5: debt fixer or our Social Security fixer. The point being
- 11:56Speaker 5: there's no one way to fix any of these things,
- 11:59Speaker 5: so you can look at them and learn more through
- 12:01Speaker 5: kind of interactive tools. But see r FB dot org
- 12:07Speaker 5: or just Google. Committee for Responsible Federal Budget. I know
- 12:09Speaker 5: it's a mouthful, but again, I think the nonpartisanship of
- 12:13Speaker 5: what we do is really important. We're not coming at
- 12:16Speaker 5: it from a political agenda. We encourage people to have
- 12:19Speaker 5: their own choices and preferences, but we can't borrow our
- 12:22Speaker 5: way to prosperity or security. We're going to have to
- 12:25Speaker 5: ask our political leaders to make the tough choices that
- 12:28Speaker 5: are necessary in actually creating a budget. That's the only
- 12:32Speaker 5: way we're going to get the situation under control and
- 12:34Speaker 5: help our economy and our security and our role in
- 12:37Speaker 5: the world stay as strong as they possibly can, because
- 12:40Speaker 5: this will undermine everything if we don't make those changes.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Maya, I appreciate you taking time out of your schedule
- 12:45Speaker 3: to be here. I know you're very busy. Great stuff
- 12:47Speaker 3: and have a great day and we will talk you hope.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Maybe we'll talk again soon. I appreciate you being here.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Thanks a lot, it'd be great.
- 12:53Speaker 5: Thanks so much. Bye.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Maya McGinnis is the president of the group entitled the Committee,
- 12:57Speaker 3: the Committee for a Responsible that Are Budget and Look.
- 13:00Speaker 3: She said at the outset that this is a nonpartisan group.
- 13:04Speaker 3: She herself. I didn't ask her what her political party was,
- 13:06Speaker 3: but she's a registered independent. And you know, again, I
- 13:10Speaker 3: am not an economist by any stretch of the imagination.
- 13:13Speaker 3: People that know me know that numbers ain't my thing.
- 13:17Speaker 3: But when we've got people that both sides are just
- 13:20Speaker 3: looking at each other, and nobody wants to be the
- 13:22Speaker 3: one to back down a little bit. That's how we
- 13:25Speaker 3: get where we are now. And some serious changes are
- 13:27Speaker 3: going to have to happen. No matter who is in
- 13:28Speaker 3: the White House, no matter who controls Congress, Senate, whatever,
- 13:31Speaker 3: some serious changes are going to have to happen at
- 13:33Speaker 3: some point. The Dave Allen Show in five eighty Live

- 13:50Speaker 3: you know, as I said, that was a reference to
- 13:52Speaker 3: my guests, Maya. She her organization is nonpartisan. She herself
- 13:55Speaker 3: is a registered independent. But that is uh that that's
- 14:00Speaker 3: kind of why we are where we are now. And
- 14:03Speaker 3: to the textas point is, Republicans point to democrats, Democrats
- 14:06Speaker 3: point to Republicans. We got to start electing people that

- 18:17Speaker 3: Tony the Taylor Text three zero four nine three five
- 18:20Speaker 3: five zero zero. Let me take care of a quick text. Here.
- 18:23Speaker 3: We are awaiting Brian Dayton from the Chamber of Commerce,
- 18:26Speaker 3: but Rusty Webb is always on deck and he's always
- 18:28Speaker 3: on time. Rusty we may switch and put Rusty on
- 18:30Speaker 3: before Brian because we're still trying to locate where Brian
- 18:33Speaker 3: Dayton is right now. I had a text at the
- 18:36Speaker 3: top of the show. This said, Dave. A news article
- 18:38Speaker 3: that I read this morning says that vehicle taxes paid
- 18:41Speaker 3: in twenty twenty four can be refunded on your twenty
- 18:44Speaker 3: twenty five return. The twenty twenty five return is filed
- 18:48Speaker 3: in twenty twenty six. Is this correct a correct or
- 18:51Speaker 3: do they mean twenty twenty four return. So I sent
- 18:55Speaker 3: a text out to Larry Pack, the State Revenue Secretary,
- 18:59Speaker 3: and he may have heard him on Happy yesterday. He's
- 19:00Speaker 3: been kind of making the rounds and I sent a
- 19:02Speaker 3: text out to Larry Pack, and Larry Pack responded by
- 19:08Speaker 3: saying twenty twenty four return, which is filed early twenty
- 19:11Speaker 3: twenty five. So there is your answer. Rusty Webb is here, Rusty,
- 19:17Speaker 3: good morning, Welcome to the show.
- 19:18Speaker 10: Well, I'm trying to put on social media that I'm
- 19:21Speaker 10: going to be on at nine twenty six instead of
- 19:23Speaker 10: thirty three.
- 19:24Speaker 9: Well, you know, it takes a second.
- 19:26Speaker 3: It's you know, it's it's a flexible thing. Sometimes things happen,
- 19:29Speaker 3: you know. Well, I don't know what. I don't know
- 19:31Speaker 3: where Brian Daton is. It's not like Brian. He listens
- 19:33Speaker 3: to the show every day. And I will say that
- 19:36Speaker 3: today is his wedding anniversary. Oh and so he texted
- 19:39Speaker 3: me when we were texting back and forth yesterday, he said,
- 19:42Speaker 3: well that count is a gift for my wife. If
- 19:43Speaker 3: I'm on the radio. I said, no, it will not.
- 19:46Speaker 3: So maybe he stopped, you know, at a dollar tree
- 19:48Speaker 3: or something to pick up his his wife an anniversary gift.
- 19:51Speaker 3: We'll try to get Brian on a little bit later
- 19:53Speaker 3: if he comes in, but I appreciate you being here
- 19:55Speaker 3: early because it's time for thunder in the mountains.
- 19:58Speaker 10: In the mountains, and speaking of flexibility, we just made
- 20:00Speaker 10: this decision thirty minutes ago, and that is we're playing
- 20:06Speaker 10: the entire tournament at the y m c A. Because
- 20:09Speaker 10: of the rain we were gonna we've already we've already
- 20:12Speaker 10: decided to move Friday's matches because of the rain, but
- 20:16Speaker 10: we're gonna move the entire tournament up there. So uh.
- 20:21Speaker 10: Announcement number one. Announcement number two. We changed the format
- 20:25Speaker 10: this year.
- 20:28Speaker 9: The mayor.
- 20:31Speaker 10: Was really interested in having local people play and so
- 20:34Speaker 10: we're w and Marshall coaches like, let's have a singles
- 20:38Speaker 10: tournament flat out, just play, just play. So we changed
- 20:42Speaker 10: it so it's a Women's Open Singles. UTR is the
- 20:48Speaker 10: kind of like the organization that's putting it together, and
- 20:51Speaker 10: it has cash prizes. We have a cash purse, so
- 20:55Speaker 10: of course the high school kids can't they can't get
- 20:59Speaker 10: They can they can play, but they can't get money.
- 21:02Speaker 10: So so we have as a result, we're kind of
- 21:08Speaker 10: starting small because it kind of got a late start,
- 21:12Speaker 10: and we have some of the best high school players
- 21:15Speaker 10: in New Jersey, Maryland, in West Virginia playing in this
- 21:21Speaker 10: tournament along with Marshall players and WVU player.
- 21:25Speaker 3: I was going to say when you talked about the changes,
- 21:27Speaker 3: I was afraid you were going to say that there
- 21:28Speaker 3: wouldn't be Marshall and WVU. But they are taking part.
- 21:31Speaker 10: They are taking part, but they're taking part not as
- 21:33Speaker 10: a team but as individuals. As a matter of fact,
- 21:36Speaker 10: if you want to see WVU practice, they'll be at
- 21:41Speaker 10: the why tonight I think this afternoon, late this afternoon,
- 21:44Speaker 10: so anyway, so that's exciting. And then we also have
- 21:52Speaker 10: a lady from Morgantown who won the Triple A Girls
- 21:56Speaker 10: tennis tournament just what six May, just a few months ago.
- 22:01Speaker 10: And we have Naughty a or cut who if you
- 22:05Speaker 10: know anything about tennis and West Virginia and particularly Charleston,
- 22:11Speaker 10: Naughty and Julie orcutt are are are really really cream
- 22:14Speaker 10: of the crop. They are. They're great players. So Naughty
- 22:17Speaker 10: is playing and We're going to have a back draw,
- 22:20Speaker 10: so if if you know, if a player loses, we're
- 22:22Speaker 10: going to give them a guarantee two matches. So say
- 22:27Speaker 10: you know, somebody loses, we're gonna let them play a
- 22:29Speaker 10: backdraw so they can get at least two matches. In
- 22:36Speaker 10: first prizes one thousand dollars, second prize is five hundred,
- 22:40Speaker 10: and the two semi finalists will each receive two hundred
- 22:43Speaker 10: and fifty dollars.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Talk about the involvement of getting some of the tennis
- 22:47Speaker 3: teams involved. I mean, like as far as the different
- 22:49Speaker 3: height schools and whatever, and even the maybe middle school
- 22:52Speaker 3: and I'm down to the elementary school age. I mean,
- 22:54Speaker 3: talk about the involvement because this is, you know, obviously
- 22:57Speaker 3: a showcase of fine tennis, but I know you're looking
- 22:59Speaker 3: for the future. You'd like to try to get these
- 23:01Speaker 3: young kids to.
- 23:03Speaker 10: Beg beg tennis coaches, bring, bring your players and watch this.
- 23:09Speaker 10: Here's what we're gonna do. If you know, if you
- 23:10Speaker 10: know the y MC a court, you look across the
- 23:14Speaker 10: courts and you can't see five, you can't see four,
- 23:17Speaker 10: you're up in this crow's nest. What we're going to
- 23:20Speaker 10: do is we're gonna play the matches on courts two, three,
- 23:23Speaker 10: and four, so you can set chairs on court five
- 23:26Speaker 10: and court one and watch between you know, between those two.
- 23:31Speaker 10: So what I'm saying is I'm begging middle school, high school,
- 23:35Speaker 10: grade school, anybody who plays tennis to come and watch
- 23:38Speaker 10: this outstanding tennis inside, you know, out the weather. And
- 23:46Speaker 10: like last year, Chapmanville rolled in, which was really cool.
- 23:50Speaker 3: I was really Chris Kid's still the coach Chapmanville, do
- 23:52Speaker 3: you know, I don't know. It's a good friend of
- 23:54Speaker 3: mine from the radio. He actually is a teacher, but
- 23:56Speaker 3: he also does some radio down there, and I knew
- 23:57Speaker 3: he was the coach for years the chapmanvilleage.
- 24:00Speaker 10: Well I'm just was really proud of chapman Field, you know.
- 24:02Speaker 10: But we have so much Look, look, we have what
- 24:05Speaker 10: twenty high schools and middle schools within a twenty minute
- 24:08Speaker 10: drive of the of this city. So I'm perplexed as
- 24:12Speaker 10: why why they don't come. It's great tennis, and it's
- 24:17Speaker 10: not like you're going to watch so much college. You're
- 24:20Speaker 10: going to see some really good high school Some of
- 24:22Speaker 10: these high school girls have ratings that are higher than
- 24:25Speaker 10: some of the college students. So you know there may
- 24:28Speaker 10: be an upset or two out there, but I just
- 24:31Speaker 10: I was not supposed to be here. I was supposed
- 24:33Speaker 10: to go to Florida and everything got canceled because of
- 24:36Speaker 10: the rain. And I'm tickled to death that I get
- 24:39Speaker 10: to stay and watch it. I'm not the director anymore,
- 24:42Speaker 10: Shane Saunders is okay, but I'm a assistant director for
- 24:46Speaker 10: public relations. I just made that up.
- 24:48Speaker 3: I like it. I mean, I make up my I
- 24:50Speaker 3: make up my own titles all the time. Why not?
- 24:52Speaker 3: Why not? But Dave Island showing five eighty lie present
- 24:55Speaker 3: about General Hardware of Windfield and Milton General number of
- 24:57Speaker 3: Windfield for all projects picking small shop locally. This is
- 25:00Speaker 3: General Hardware WV dot com. All right, So what I've
- 25:03Speaker 3: got you here?
- 25:04Speaker 10: I want to do before I leave? I want to
- 25:07Speaker 10: I want to I want to acknowledge my sponsors.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Yeah, oh absolutely, okay, go ahead.
- 25:11Speaker 10: Thank you. So Chick fil A has been been there
- 25:13Speaker 10: with us from day one, going to provide sandwiches, Tammy
- 25:18Speaker 10: down Jimmy John's down on Capitol Street. She's going to
- 25:20Speaker 10: provide sandwiches on Saturday. The y m c A is
- 25:24Speaker 10: always great in a pinch integrity insurance. Chris Chris Walters underwrites, ore,
- 25:32Speaker 10: you know everything has to have insurance. Of course, Charleston
- 25:36Speaker 10: CVB Web Law Center. I'm a sponsor. And last and
- 25:42Speaker 10: not least is Mary Amy Goodwin in the city of Charleston.
- 25:45Speaker 10: She has been a stalwart supporter of this tournament from
- 25:48Speaker 10: the beginning and she's looking forward to expanding it where
- 25:51Speaker 10: you're hoping to go thirty two sixty four next year.
- 25:55Speaker 10: We got a late start, that's what I can say.
- 25:59Speaker 10: We got a late starts, so that's why we didn't
- 26:01Speaker 10: get a lot more colleges involved.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Okay, all right, well all right, now why you got
- 26:04Speaker 3: me here? Well, we're going to get back to the tournament.
- 26:06Speaker 3: I'll give all give an opportunity to give all of
- 26:08Speaker 3: the facts, details, time, so on and so forth. But
- 26:10Speaker 3: I always like to pick your brain about things when
- 26:12Speaker 3: it comes to political stuff.
- 26:14Speaker 10: I want to Dallas Cowboys.
- 26:17Speaker 3: The Cowboys playing to night Man. It's a tradition in
- 26:20Speaker 3: anytime the Cowboys, anytime the Cowboys and Marshall play their
- 26:24Speaker 3: respect always wear the gear. And yeah, the Cowboys play
- 26:27Speaker 3: the Thursday night game against the Giants. Rusty I have
- 26:30Speaker 3: been a Dallas Cowboy fan since Super Bowl twelve when
- 26:34Speaker 3: they beat the Broncos. I became a fan. They beat
- 26:36Speaker 3: the Broncos twenty seven to ten. Landry was the coach,
- 26:40Speaker 3: and I have been with this team ever since then.
- 26:43Speaker 3: I was seven years old and I have been with
- 26:45Speaker 3: this team ever since. And this is the year. This
- 26:51Speaker 3: is the year we're going to turn it around.
- 26:53Speaker 5: Here.
- 26:54Speaker 3: All we need is a running game and a defense,
- 26:56Speaker 3: and we've got it. We've got the highest paid quarterback
- 26:59Speaker 3: in the league, the highest paid wide receiver. If we
- 27:02Speaker 3: just had a running game, and just as they say,
- 27:05Speaker 3: other than that, missus Lincoln, how was to play? All right?
- 27:08Speaker 3: So let's talk about let's talk about some political stuff.
- 27:10Speaker 3: I want to get your opinion. I don't care, just
- 27:12Speaker 3: what's on your mind politically? What are you looking at
- 27:13Speaker 3: right now? Got the my.
- 27:17Speaker 10: Big concern, of course, if you follow me on social media,
- 27:19Speaker 10: you know exactly how I feel about the Democrat nominee.
- 27:23Speaker 10: But my biggest fear is for president.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, you're not You're not on the hairs train.
- 27:30Speaker 10: No, not at all. My biggest fear is that she's
- 27:35Speaker 10: going to win those swing states. And so to the
- 27:38Speaker 10: extent I have any friends in other states showing whatever
- 27:44Speaker 10: I can for president.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Okay, what is it about? Did you feel the same
- 27:49Speaker 3: way about Biden or is it just Harris that you
- 27:50Speaker 3: had an issue with.
- 27:53Speaker 10: You know, Biden was actually a good moderate back in
- 27:55Speaker 10: the day. He was back in the day before they
- 27:58Speaker 10: got their hands on him. He was a decent moderate. Uh.
- 28:03Speaker 10: He was a lot like Joe Manchin in that sense.
- 28:06Speaker 10: As far as his politics, he was middle of the road.
- 28:10Speaker 10: Then they got their hands on him, and now he
- 28:12Speaker 10: went you know, well went liberal. But anyway, that's my
- 28:18Speaker 10: big concern. I'm these state races, in my opinion, are over.
- 28:25Speaker 10: I mean they're just over. I mean I don't and
- 28:27Speaker 10: I love everybody running. By the way, two of my
- 28:31Speaker 10: best friends are running against each other for governor, and
- 28:36Speaker 10: I I love love Steve, love him.
- 28:39Speaker 3: What about a debate though, you know, Jim Justice does
- 28:42Speaker 3: not want to debate Glenn Elliott, and he shouldn't.
- 28:44Speaker 10: He shouldn't. I mean, when you're up by thirty points,
- 28:46Speaker 10: why why why why why why do it just giving
- 28:49Speaker 10: the other part?
- 28:50Speaker 3: From a from a strategical standpoint, I would agree with you,
- 28:54Speaker 3: but I still don't think it's good for the people
- 28:57Speaker 3: in my opinion.
- 28:58Speaker 10: Uh, pass.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Okay, all right, pass, fair enough pass. Do you think
- 29:04Speaker 3: that to morrisse CV Williams is a slam dunk for Morrisey?
- 29:09Speaker 10: I do.
- 29:10Speaker 3: I think it's just the nature of the state. I
- 29:12Speaker 3: don't think it has anything necessarily to do with Steve Williams.
- 29:15Speaker 3: I don't. I don't care who's got the d after
- 29:16Speaker 3: the name.
- 29:17Speaker 10: If this was thirty years ago, it would be just
- 29:18Speaker 10: the opposite.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Yeah, thirty years in the future. It may be that.
- 29:22Speaker 10: I mean, you talk about being a cowboy fan since
- 29:25Speaker 10: age seven. I've been involved in politics since nineteen seventy two,
- 29:30Speaker 10: when I was eleven. Okay, I put an arch more
- 29:34Speaker 10: sign in the Boone County Courthouse lawn one time, not
- 29:38Speaker 10: knowing of course that you can't do well. A, it's
- 29:41Speaker 10: it's illegal, but B it was the most Democrat county.
- 29:46Speaker 10: You know, you were just down the road. Yeah, oh yeah, well,
- 29:50Speaker 10: I mean Logan. It was hard to compete with Logan
- 29:52Speaker 10: and Mingo back then, with you know, corrupt politics.
- 29:56Speaker 3: We kind of cornered the market out of that.
- 29:58Speaker 10: Yeah we did too. Yeah, we had our too, But
- 30:01Speaker 10: I remember, and I even it was raining, I put
- 30:03Speaker 10: cell aphane around it, so wouldn't get wet. That's how.
- 30:07Speaker 10: That's how. Now, that's that's a long time. I've been
- 30:10Speaker 10: around around it. So I know a law of the
- 30:11Speaker 10: history of the state. I know a law of that,
- 30:13Speaker 10: and I know both sides of the isle. I know
- 30:15Speaker 10: everybody on both sides of the isl.
- 30:16Speaker 3: But going back national before I let you go, yeah, yeah,
- 30:19Speaker 3: somebody you know here, And I've said this on the
- 30:21Speaker 3: show Restie. People have said on both sides. They said,
- 30:23Speaker 3: if Kamala Harris is elected president, that's the end of
- 30:26Speaker 3: democracy as we know it. I've heard people say if
- 30:28Speaker 3: Donald Trump is elected again, that's the end of democracy
- 30:32Speaker 3: as we know it. Is this grand old experiment that
- 30:34Speaker 3: we have of the United States of America not strong
- 30:38Speaker 3: enough to withstand either one of them being president. I'd
- 30:41Speaker 3: like to think.
- 30:42Speaker 10: So it's funny because I just I think about these
- 30:45Speaker 10: things like you do, and I had this, If I
- 30:48Speaker 10: had the technology, I'd have two people sitting, one in
- 30:50Speaker 10: blue and one in red, saying if she he, at
- 30:55Speaker 10: the same time is elected, our government will be destroyed
- 30:59Speaker 10: because both sides believe that. I've never seen a country
- 31:02Speaker 10: so polarized in my life. Yeah, we'll sustain it. One
- 31:07Speaker 10: of the you know as a conservative Republican we will
- 31:12Speaker 10: still have the Senate hopefully and gain the Senate and
- 31:16Speaker 10: have the House. So there's only so much a president
- 31:19Speaker 10: can do to destroy America. So we have the we
- 31:25Speaker 10: have the legislature to block stupid stuff.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Well we have. That's why we have safeguards. All right,
- 31:30Speaker 3: get back to thunderd the mountains, give us the time,
- 31:32Speaker 3: the location, so on and so on.
- 31:33Speaker 10: So Round one will be ten thirty, three matches at
- 31:37Speaker 10: ten thirty at the Why tomorrow today, Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Friday. Yeah, Friday,
- 31:41Speaker 10: three matches at eleven thirty and three matches at three o'clock.
- 31:47Speaker 10: That's it for Tomorrowkay. Then Saturday there'll be two matches
- 31:52Speaker 10: just too. We only have we have sixteen sixteen player
- 31:55Speaker 10: bracket except for the back draws will be eleven o'clock
- 32:01Speaker 10: semi finals at the Y and Sunday ten o'clock final
- 32:07Speaker 10: at the Y. All at the Y, and we'll go
- 32:10Speaker 10: back to Kanash City, which I love those courts. The
- 32:13Speaker 10: city is so good to us when we do this tournament.
- 32:18Speaker 10: And we'll be back down to beautiful Kanash City next year.
- 32:23Speaker 3: All right, Rusty, appreciate you taking time to be I
- 32:25Speaker 3: Appreciate you stepping up early.

- 37:09Speaker 3: have missed or do you want to put a little
- 37:10Speaker 3: bit more of a local Canal Valley spin on it?
- 37:12Speaker 3: What exactly is this?
- 37:14Speaker 9: So this is a publication we've been doing for a
- 37:16Speaker 9: number of years now, but it tracks West Virginia with
- 37:20Speaker 9: other states on fifty seven metrics of basically economic health
- 37:24Speaker 9: we believe that we are in a constant competition with
- 37:27Speaker 9: other states, and we want to know how are we doing,
- 37:31Speaker 9: How are we doing when it comes to tax rates,
- 37:33Speaker 9: how are we doing when it comes to workforce participation,
- 37:35Speaker 9: How are we doing when it comes to bringing people
- 37:38Speaker 9: into West Virginia versus having the brain drain leaving West Virginia.
- 37:43Speaker 9: So it's called the Campaign for Jobs Digest. It's a
- 37:46Speaker 9: red book. It is available on our website, so if
- 37:49Speaker 9: you want to get on, you can go on see
- 37:50Speaker 9: an electronic copy and read through these statistics. But it's
- 37:54Speaker 9: something we put a lot of time into this to
- 37:57Speaker 9: compile this and make this understandable for people to read
- 38:00Speaker 9: and say, Okay, what are we doing and help keep
- 38:03Speaker 9: the focus on what do we need to be doing
- 38:04Speaker 9: heading into the future.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Give us a summary right now for people that are working,
- 38:07Speaker 3: driving and can't go look at it right now.
- 38:09Speaker 9: Yes, if you are driving, don't pull up your phone
- 38:12Speaker 9: and please don't, please don't. So there's been some good
- 38:15Speaker 9: news in West Virginia, and there's been some unfortunate news
- 38:19Speaker 9: where we still have a lot of work to do,
- 38:20Speaker 9: but there are some things that we're really seeing that
- 38:23Speaker 9: I think are positive First of all, we've seen some
- 38:26Speaker 9: absolutely fantastic economic development announcements come into West Virginia. New
- 38:31Speaker 9: Core Steel, Procter and Gamble, owens of minor Mountain State
- 38:34Speaker 9: beverage Form Energy. Those are just some right off the
- 38:37Speaker 9: top of my head. Berkshire Hathway up in Jackson County,
- 38:40Speaker 9: that is really those were things we weren't hearing about
- 38:43Speaker 9: ten years ago. We didn't have that coming in. And
- 38:46Speaker 9: we have successfully changed I think our state's image on
- 38:49Speaker 9: the business climate to where these companies are now looking
- 38:52Speaker 9: and saying, hey, our next expansion or our next investment,
- 38:55Speaker 9: why not look at the Mountain state. That's been a positive.
- 38:58Speaker 9: Here's another one. When I graduated high school, I can
- 39:02Speaker 9: basically go down through the top of the roster of
- 39:05Speaker 9: my high school class. They ended up in Pittsburgh, they
- 39:08Speaker 9: ended up in Washington, d c. And Charlotte, North Carolina, Columbus, Ohio.
- 39:13Speaker 9: We had a brain drain in West Virginia and we
- 39:15Speaker 9: would see year after year people leaving West Virginia as
- 39:18Speaker 9: compared to coming in. We fix that for the past,
- 39:21Speaker 9: not by much, but for the past few years now
- 39:24Speaker 9: we have had more net domestic migration coming into West Virginia.
- 39:28Speaker 9: We ranked twenty third in the country for in terms
- 39:30Speaker 9: of domestic migration. We're still forty seventh on international migration.
- 39:34Speaker 9: But that's been a very positive break down. Domestic domestic
- 39:38Speaker 9: would be moving state to state, in international would be
- 39:41Speaker 9: moving from another country coming in, so state to state,
- 39:44Speaker 9: we're having more people move into West Virginia to move out.
- 39:46Speaker 9: That's positive. The problem is we have had more death
- 39:51Speaker 9: than births since two thousand and seven.
- 39:54Speaker 3: Since I'm glad that you are presenting both sides because
- 39:56Speaker 3: I get this all the time. But anytime I talk
- 39:58Speaker 3: about people coming into West Virginia, I live and you
- 40:00Speaker 3: and I both live in the Dayes Valley area. We
- 40:02Speaker 3: know what we see on a daily basis. It's not
- 40:05Speaker 3: true of everywhere in the state, you know, and but
- 40:07Speaker 3: hopefully it will be. But I always get somebody that
- 40:09Speaker 3: says people are not leaving. And the thing about it
- 40:11Speaker 3: is two things can be right at the same time.
- 40:14Speaker 3: So we were leaving, we're tops of the nation, or
- 40:17Speaker 3: were you know, among the top or whatever in people
- 40:19Speaker 3: moving here. Unfortunately, though, we have more people dying that
- 40:23Speaker 3: are being born because we're the oldest state in the nation.
- 40:27Speaker 3: So on both sides of the argument that I get
- 40:29Speaker 3: on the show via textra calls both sides are technically right,
- 40:33Speaker 3: I guess.
- 40:33Speaker 9: Yes, yes, And so we've got to figure out ways
- 40:37Speaker 9: to get our birth rip. That's going to be a
- 40:38Speaker 9: challenge because we do have a more elderly population in
- 40:41Speaker 9: West Virginia compared to other states. That's just a fact.
- 40:45Speaker 9: But one of the big issues we're hearing a lot
- 40:48Speaker 9: of talk about right now is it pertains the special
- 40:50Speaker 9: session heading into the regular session, for example, is childcare
- 40:53Speaker 9: and some people who are making plans on the size
- 40:55Speaker 9: of family they're going to have. That is a major
- 40:57Speaker 9: factor and can be the difference between do you have
- 41:00Speaker 9: one children or two, or have two versus three? You know,
- 41:03Speaker 9: So we're looking at things like that too. What do
- 41:05Speaker 9: you do to make it easier for people who may
- 41:07Speaker 9: want to have more children but are looking at the
- 41:09Speaker 9: finance and going, I don't know that I can, but yeah,
- 41:13Speaker 9: the good news is we are having more people move
- 41:15Speaker 9: here than we've had moved out. We got to fix
- 41:17Speaker 9: the birth rate.
- 41:19Speaker 3: Well, I mean just look at people and say go
- 41:21Speaker 3: have babies.
- 41:22Speaker 9: That I mean, you can say that I have two
- 41:26Speaker 9: and I'm looking at my wife and tell you that
- 41:27Speaker 9: that's great too.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Good. I'm good, I'm good, I'm good to you mentioned
- 41:33Speaker 3: the special session. Well, now we'll close with this, and
- 41:35Speaker 3: the special session is next week. We still, as of
- 41:38Speaker 3: right now, I know you followed it, you know a
- 41:40Speaker 3: lot more closely than I have. As of right now,
- 41:41Speaker 3: we still don't know what's going to be on the call.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Some of the legislators are kind of wringing their hands, saying, well,
- 41:46Speaker 3: what are we even talking about? Because he has to
- 41:48Speaker 3: put it on there. Are you hopeful that that meaningful
- 41:53Speaker 3: change or meaningful legislation or meaningful discussions or whatever you
- 41:56Speaker 3: want to call it will come out in that special
- 41:58Speaker 3: session as it pertains to childcare.
- 42:01Speaker 9: Yes, yes, I am, And there have been a lot
- 42:03Speaker 9: of very good conversations. Five years ago, Dave, this really
- 42:07Speaker 9: wasn't an issue that people talked about. It was an issue,
- 42:10Speaker 9: but it wasn't receiving intention. Now it's becoming, i think
- 42:13Speaker 9: more evident to lawmakers, to policymakers, to the business community,
- 42:17Speaker 9: the general public, we really have to address this. So
- 42:20Speaker 9: we've heard had some very productive conversations on that topic
- 42:24Speaker 9: that where we may be able to get some serious
- 42:26Speaker 9: things done during this special session. It's all going to
- 42:30Speaker 9: be combined with the governor wants an income tax cut.
- 42:33Speaker 9: You know, there are some other desires out there that
- 42:35Speaker 9: are being brought in. So what I would remind your
- 42:38Speaker 9: listeners is when it comes to a special session, the
- 42:42Speaker 9: legislature by two thirds can call themselves in. Otherwise, the
- 42:45Speaker 9: governor calls them in, and what he puts on the
- 42:48Speaker 9: call is what they can't address. It's not like a
- 42:51Speaker 9: regular session where you can introduce what else.
- 42:53Speaker 3: Yeah, it can only be what's on the agenda pretty much.
- 42:55Speaker 9: Yes, So what is on the call can dictate of
- 42:58Speaker 9: what they can consider.
- 43:00Speaker 3: All right. I appreciate you being here and for not
- 43:03Speaker 3: giving me crap like a rusty webdit about my Cowboys apparel.
- 43:06Speaker 9: I mean, hey, buddy, I'm a Steelers fan. I'm just
- 43:09Speaker 9: being nice today.
- 43:11Speaker 3: Real quick. I did have a text somebody said, what
- 43:13Speaker 3: counties are the folks migrating to in West Virginia? Do
- 43:15Speaker 3: you have that data? If they're coming here where? What
- 43:18Speaker 3: are some of the counties that I would imagine Berkeley's
- 43:20Speaker 3: probably on that list?
- 43:21Speaker 9: Jefferson, Yeah, you really look at it. The counties that
- 43:24Speaker 9: are growing. You have a lot that are kind of
- 43:26Speaker 9: saying stagnant. The Eastern Panhandle has seen some real growth
- 43:30Speaker 9: where you and I live out in Putnam County has
- 43:32Speaker 9: been growing a little bit, not as great. Montgelia County
- 43:35Speaker 9: has been doing well. So we've seen the growth focused
- 43:38Speaker 9: in a few areas. But what we have noticed is
- 43:42Speaker 9: that drain that's been going around is slowing in a
- 43:45Speaker 9: lot of areas. So I think that's a positive that
- 43:47Speaker 9: that is movement in the right direction. But where you're
- 43:49Speaker 9: really looking, where the growth is coming, Eastern Panhandle, Montingeya, Putnam,
- 43:54Speaker 9: those are the primary areas.
- 43:55Speaker 3: All right, Brian, will have you on again soon. I appreciate.
- 43:57Speaker 3: Happy anniversary, by the way, thank you. You got a
- 43:59Speaker 3: ways to go to to mine because I would just

- 44:06Speaker 9: on my tenth anniversary. I ran into you Monday. It

- 47:54Speaker 18: Hey, Dave, Yeah, russy game yesterday. I mean to be
- 47:56Speaker 18: honest with you, we always say how great it is
- 47:58Speaker 18: that we can play in the rain because of turf,
- 48:00Speaker 18: but that really just messed up our pitchers and not
- 48:03Speaker 18: just the dirty Birds pitchers, the other teams pitchers had
- 48:06Speaker 18: issues finding the strike zone wild pitches. It just so
- 48:09Speaker 18: happens that our pictures are the ones that walked a
- 48:12Speaker 18: few more guys.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they put up some some serious numbers
- 48:15Speaker 3: on the board. The other guys did, But we're gonna
- 48:17Speaker 3: forget about that. We're going to hit the road, travel today,
- 48:20Speaker 3: and then we'll be up in York, Pennsylvania tomorrow night.
- 48:23Speaker 3: But the Bird's got to get it in gear because
- 48:24Speaker 3: we're down.
- 48:25Speaker 18: Too, Jill exactly. So need to win the next three
- 48:28Speaker 18: games to win that championship right now. This is actually
- 48:31Speaker 18: a pretty depressing stat Since nineteen ninety one, we have
- 48:35Speaker 18: lost fourteen consecutive Championship Series games. So looking to break
