- 0:16>> Skylar: M welcome back, everybody, to another episode of the session Zero
- 0:19Heroes podcast. My name is Skylar, but
- 0:21today my name doesn't really matter that much,
- 0:24because today I get to play in a game
- 0:27of Monster of the week
- 0:30as we are narrated and led
- 0:33by special guest game master
- 0:35Nate vagart. I said it, right?
- 0:38>> Cameron: Yes, you did.
- 0:38>> Skylar: Nailed it. Awesome. And, he's gonna be leading
- 0:41this special Halloween special. I said special
- 0:44twice. Halloween special. One shot of
- 0:47Monster of the week.
- 0:48>> Skylar: For us this Halloween season.
- 0:50>> Skylar: So sit back and enjoy as we get into the
- 0:53spookier zone. I can't say the twilight zone. That's
- 0:56already been done. The spookier zone of the
- 0:59holiday season.
- 1:00>> Skylar: Nate, take it away.
- 1:02>> Cameron: Hey, everybody. glad m to be here. Glad to get to run
- 1:04stuff. M I've played with a few of you guys in our
- 1:07dino themed one shot and really
- 1:10enjoyed it. I'm a big fan of monster of the week and powered by the
- 1:13apocalypse in general, so I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:16so, as I told our characters, and as
- 1:18I'm just opening for any of you, the
- 1:21listeners, this, is gonna be
- 1:23a pretty pg
- 1:26podcast. our players are playing
- 1:28tweendheheheheheheheheheheheheheh. you know, tween agers,
- 1:31whatever. You interpret that as, out to
- 1:34trick or treat. so
- 1:37we're gonna let our characters introduce themselves. They were
- 1:40given pre, made character sheets, that were made
- 1:42using, the online resources of monster of the
- 1:45week, a really cool resource that I got from
- 1:48the evilhat.com dot. I don't know if I should plug or not,
- 1:51but they have all of the monster of the week resources. So if you
- 1:54do want to dabble in this, after listening to the. The various
- 1:57things, there's a whole bunch of resources to jump into.
- 2:00That's just the one I happen to use when I need my online
- 2:03stuff. so I'm gonna introduce our
- 2:06characters really briefly, and then I'll let their players take it
- 2:09away with, some of the more personal
- 2:12details they have. So our first character
- 2:15I'm gonna introduce is Alex. Alex
- 2:17is a religious youth,
- 2:20who embodies a heroic spirit. they believe
- 2:23that they have been chosen to protect the innocent,
- 2:26and champion the cause of good against any malevolent
- 2:29forces that they may threaten. They may threaten their
- 2:32friends. So, Alex, if you want to really
- 2:34quickly tell us what your trick or treating costume is.
- 2:37>> Cameron: Yeah, I had one idea, and then you said it
- 2:40was really religious, and I'm like, okay, hold on.
- 2:43I was originally thinking, like, he's really into old,
- 2:46like, Sci-Fi stuff. I thought you were gonna say,
- 2:49like, he's gonna do
- 2:52Robocop, but now you.
- 2:53>> Cameron: Say religion, it'd actually be funnier to see Pastor
- 2:56Robocop.
- 2:56>> Skylar: I was gonna say.
- 2:57>> Cameron: I swear.
- 2:57>> Skylar: You were gonna say, like, bill Gaither, something
- 3:00like that. There's the most
- 3:03secure, lucky character from veggie tales.
- 3:05>> Cameron: Wow.
- 3:06>> Cameron: That would be.
- 3:07>> Cameron: Oh, my gosh.
- 3:08>> Skylar: Bible man. Just be Bible man.
- 3:10>> Cameron: I was thinking a knight. So if I was Bible
- 3:13man, I.
- 3:15>> Skylar: Put on the sword of the
- 3:17spirit.
- 3:19>> Cameron: I actually love that idea. I'm Bible.
- 3:23No one knows who Bible man is.
- 3:25>> Cameron: That. Is that because that's the only costume your parents would let you
- 3:28have? Yes.
- 3:29>> Cameron: He wanted to be a superhero. Like, he.
- 3:32He likes comics, but, like, they never.
- 3:35>> Skylar: Wanted him.
- 3:38>> Cameron: But he has to, like, secretly read them
- 3:41because they only give him, like, the
- 3:43bible man comics. So that's what
- 3:46he reads, like when they're around, but when it's late at night
- 3:49under the sheets, he's reading, like, his spider man
- 3:52is Matt man. He really likes
- 3:54daredevil. Interesting.
- 3:57But devils would never.
- 3:59>> Skylar: Which is the word devil in it.
- 4:01>> Cameron: That's part of the reason that drew him to it was. It said
- 4:04devil in it. I was like, ooh. And I started reading. He's like, hey, this
- 4:07isn't that bad. It's like he was expecting, like, you
- 4:09know, like, hell. Right, racers?
- 4:11>> Cameron: Yeah.
- 4:11>> Cameron: Hellboy.
- 4:12>> Cameron: Hellboy.
- 4:13>> Cameron: Like. Like, when he saw it, he's expecting
- 4:15Hellboy. Yeah, but no, it's just a dude who's
- 4:18line. He's like, oh, this is sick.
- 4:20>> Cameron: Right.
- 4:21>> Cameron: So Bible man's basically
- 4:24daredevil, but with vision, so.
- 4:26>> Cameron: Okay.
- 4:26>> Cameron: And he can.
- 4:27>> Skylar: He's Batman with a little
- 4:29lightsaber.
- 4:30>> Cameron: You're right. He's.
- 4:33>> Cameron: Just to be clear, your characters literally,
- 4:36your, all your weapons and such are literally going to be just
- 4:39Bible man stuff. So you.
- 4:40>> Cameron: Yeah, I've got the plastic armor, the cheap
- 4:43plastic shield and everything, and the cheap Bible
- 4:46man lightsaber, which is basically, like, your
- 4:49typical toy lightsaber, but it's just. I think it's
- 4:51purple because this whole suits, like, a purplish
- 4:54blue yellow.
- 4:56>> Skylar: I think it, like.
- 4:56>> Cameron: It's like a purplish gold tone, I believe. But
- 4:59a lot of years, we're all looking up Bible man.
- 5:02>> Skylar: It's like a yellow lights here. It's like a yellow glow lights.
- 5:05Yeah.
- 5:06>> Cameron: He's got a purple and gold tone theme.
- 5:09>> Skylar: Yeah. That's
- 5:11amazing.
- 5:12>> Cameron: I mean, just to be clear, we've had Bible man and Bill Gaither mentioned.
- 5:15>> Skylar: So far, so we got to know.
- 5:16>> Cameron: There was an animated show.
- 5:18>> Skylar: What is that, new?
- 5:20>> Skylar: Gotta go check that out.
- 5:21>> Cameron: I don't know.
- 5:22>> Skylar: Everybody get on right now. Media. It's got to be on.
- 5:24>> Cameron: Okay, well, that's enough about Bible
- 5:27man.
- 5:28>> Cameron: We're really catering to a certain audience right now.
- 5:33>> Cameron: You said pg, so I went full
- 5:36pg.
- 5:37>> Skylar: My character guardian tells me that I'm only
- 5:40allowed to watch Bible.
- 5:42>> Cameron: We're plugging into a new demographic.
- 5:44>> Skylar: It's exactly what this podcast needs.
- 5:49>> Cameron: All right, so when it comes to the crunchy part of this,
- 5:52if and when that happens, we'll just figure that out based on, like, what you're
- 5:55character, of course, like, the harm plus and whatever. Like, don't worry about that.
- 5:58I'll tell you, that's just gonna be one of your, like, one of the things that
- 6:00has. So don't worry about that part of it. But just any of that stuff.
- 6:03Just picture yourself as Bible man.
- 6:05>> Cameron: Okay.
- 6:07>> Cameron: All right, so we're gonna come next to our second
- 6:09character, and, that's gonna be Maya. Now,
- 6:12Maya is a quirky and surprisingly
- 6:15knowledgeable friend with an uncanny affinity for
- 6:18anything supernatural. Her mind is
- 6:21brimming with tales of strange occurrences, both
- 6:23legendary and bizarre, making her an essential guide
- 6:26through tonight's adventures. So, Maya, tell us about
- 6:29yourself.
- 6:31>> Skylar: what's the intro to every time Mikayla talks on this
- 6:33podcast?
- 6:35>> Mikayla: well, I had a different idea, but I don't know if it
- 6:38works.
- 6:39>> Cameron: Well, we made Bible.
- 6:40>> Skylar: I had my costume idea, like, a month,
- 6:43two months ago. Where have you guys all been?
- 6:47>> Mikayla: well, I told you I had an idea, but the
- 6:50backstory I had for it, I don't think really fits with the
- 6:52character's description.
- 6:53>> Skylar: Corset, like a puzzle piece that doesn't go together.
- 6:56>> Mikayla: Okay, here's what I really wanted to do.
- 6:58Okay, so you
- 7:01know Kim possible?
- 7:02>> Cameron: Yes.
- 7:04>> Mikayla: I was gonna be Rufus.
- 7:05>> Cameron: I knew you were going there. I knew you were going
- 7:08in there. Imagine Kim possible. Imagine
- 7:11the rag. What are you talking about?
- 7:13>> Mikayla: This works.
- 7:14>> Cameron: You're a quirky kid. Yeah, right.
- 7:16>> Mikayla: But he said I'm gonna be, like, the main.
- 7:18>> Cameron: Okay, yeah, Rufus is the main
- 7:21character.
- 7:22>> Cameron: What are you talking about?
- 7:23>> Skylar: What have you been watching?
- 7:24>> Mikayla: Here's the thing. I am Rufus
- 7:26because my group of who I think are
- 7:29really great friends, they're all like, you know, Kim possible
- 7:32and Ron and Bible
- 7:34Manda, and I
- 7:37got wrapped into being the naked mole
- 7:39rat.
- 7:41>> Skylar: Wait, so you didn't even want to be?
- 7:43>> Mikayla: Well, that was just what was left over, and I think it's a cool
- 7:46option, but, like, you couldn't have done. I'm more naive. M
- 7:49I'm more naive to the fact.
- 7:51>> Cameron: Wait, she go.
- 7:51>> Skylar: She go. Sorry, you're right.
- 7:53>> Mikayla: you know, I'm thinking, oh, I gotta be, like, the cool,
- 7:56you know, sidekick
- 7:58character. I think it's cool. My friends are laughing
- 8:01behind my back.
- 8:02>> Cameron: What's your carrot costume? Just a naked.
- 8:05>> Skylar: How did you put it together? Tell us what the makeup looks like.
- 8:07>> Mikayla: I was gonna say, say I would get, like, a nude colored
- 8:10dress, you know, make it a little more,
- 8:14I don't know, more, preteen y, I guess.
- 8:17Preteen. And then I would probably wear
- 8:19bald cap just to commit in
- 8:22some fake.
- 8:23>> Cameron: Just be clear. So you're basically in a potato sack and a swim cap.
- 8:26>> Skylar: I was gonna swear.
- 8:27>> Mikayla: Butt teeth. Basically.
- 8:29>> Skylar: I'd be terrified if you tried to make it sexy
- 8:33and, you know, like.
- 8:34>> Mikayla: The hillbilly buck teeth, you know?
- 8:36>> Cameron: Yeah.
- 8:36>> Cameron: Also, you have fake teeth on, too.
- 8:37>> Cameron: Yeah.
- 8:38>> Skylar: Oh, are you.
- 8:43>> Skylar: Fair?
- 8:43>> Mikayla: Rufus doesn't really talk that much, so.
- 8:46>> Cameron: He talks like that in the show.
- 8:50>> Cameron: So I'm fully expecting your character to just be in the
- 8:53back mumbling different monster
- 8:56facts through buck teeth. You're gonna have to
- 8:59consciously tell us if you're taking them off
- 9:02or something.
- 9:02>> Skylar: And put them in your lips so that you have a retainer.
- 9:05>> Cameron: Yeah.
- 9:07>> Cameron: This is a great start.
- 9:08>> Cameron: I'm excited.
- 9:09>> Skylar: This is gonna be hilarious.
- 9:12>> Cameron: Sorry.
- 9:12>> Cameron: Really quick aside, monster Week is not about the
- 9:15person running monster of the week. It's about the characters and what they
- 9:18do. That's the beauty of it. Unlike D and D, where it's so
- 9:21DM centered, this. This game really just exists for the players,
- 9:24and the DM is everything they're not, like, just
- 9:27fills the other void. So, I don't know. The more fun
- 9:29you have with your character, the more fun I get to have with just
- 9:32random stuff that you run into. Oh, yeah. and again. And have to build
- 9:35around. It's very much more of, like, almost an improv comedy game versus,
- 9:38you know, a scheduled written out, you know.
- 9:41>> Skylar: Yeah.
- 9:42>> Cameron: Game, plan, which is the fun of it, the difference between that and d and
- 9:45d and stuff. So going to our next
- 9:48one. we're going to James. James
- 9:50is a dedicated horror movie buff, whose
- 9:53encyclopedic knowledge of folklore and monster hunting
- 9:56weapons him with useful insights and strategies
- 9:59for overcoming whatever challenges lie ahead. Now, you're gonna
- 10:02notice that's pretty similar to Maya in some ways.
- 10:05you know, maybe, you know, I'll be
- 10:08interested to see what differentiation you guys make from each other,
- 10:11because both of you are supposed to know stuff, but, like, why do you know
- 10:14stuff? What do you know? How do you know what's gonna probably come out
- 10:16pretty interesting?
- 10:17>> Skylar: I think, just describing my character is probably gonna point
- 10:20out the major difference between the two of us.
- 10:23so James Rodriguez is a Malgoth,
- 10:27and he tugs like this. And
- 10:31his costume that he's wearing this Halloween
- 10:34is the crow
- 10:37from the movie the crow.
- 10:41And so, yeah, which is funny, because, honestly,
- 10:45his normal attire is obviously the classic black
- 10:48with, like, black eyeliner. Like, everything's black. He dyes his hair
- 10:51black. Sometimes he'll do, like, some. Some highlight bits in there that
- 10:54are, like, red or blue, but it's always kind of that dark,
- 10:56gothy theme. So the crow was kind of a no brainer.
- 10:59He really didn't even have to do, like, that much to his whole look
- 11:02as it is. just put on, like, a lot. An excess of
- 11:05white, like, makeup and stuff and.
- 11:08Yeah, that's, that's what he does. He loves horror. his
- 11:11parents, I like to think his parents don't
- 11:14know how much he watches. Like, when
- 11:17it says. Because you said you have, like, a. There's a home theater, which I think
- 11:19is his dad put in for, like, watching football and stuff.
- 11:22And then whenever his parents aren't home, he's popping a
- 11:25dvd that he got from a friend or some. Or, you know,
- 11:28got from blockbuster or something like that, and watching,
- 11:31some horror movie that he's technically not allowed to be watching.
- 11:34Same with the crow. You should not have watched the crow. That's.
- 11:37That's rated rhino. But he did.
- 11:40>> Cameron: I don't. I don't think.
- 11:44>> Cameron: This is into the two. This is a childhood you
- 11:47imagine either. So. Childhood, you imagine not the
- 11:50childhood you had.
- 11:51>> Cameron: Okay.
- 11:52>> Cameron: That works a lot better for us, cuz.
- 11:53>> Skylar: Cuz James has a lot of punk songs he's
- 11:56gonna be referencing throughout this. So.
- 11:58>> Cameron: So it's. You really heard nineties to
- 12:012000. 2000. Okay.
- 12:03>> Skylar: Got the rest of the day listening to a nineties
- 12:052000 exclusive. Punk pop
- 12:08playlists.
- 12:09>> Mikayla: To be honest, most of us remember the two thousands more
- 12:12than we would memorize.
- 12:13>> Cameron: Yeah, that's really sad to hear. I remember
- 12:16nothing.
- 12:17>> Mikayla: I mean, I was born in 95, so. But, I mean,
- 12:20there wasn't, like, that.
- 12:21>> Skylar: Much to experience as an infant during the nineties,
- 12:24but the two thousands, definitely.
- 12:26>> Mikayla: Yeah.
- 12:26>> Cameron: Some of us were born in 90, so we were very little.
- 12:29>> Skylar: You were a lot hunter were you.
- 12:31>> Cameron: Even born in the nineties? That was more 98.
- 12:35>> Skylar: I am this kid. 90s gibbon riz on the other end of the
- 12:38table here.
- 12:39>> Cameron: See?
- 12:39>> Mikayla: And Maya's knowledge probably comes more from, like, the fantasy
- 12:42books.
- 12:43>> Skylar: See, Maya's the reaper jeans, the
- 12:46watchers.
- 12:47>> Cameron: Yeah, mine's the Bible.
- 12:51You guys heard about that Samson guy? Pretty cool
- 12:54fella.
- 12:54>> Skylar: What did he do? Did he kill a whole bunch of people?
- 12:57>> Cameron: Oh, yeah. This dude sounds good.
- 12:59>> Skylar: Metal.
- 13:00>> Cameron: Hold the roof down on him.
- 13:01>> Skylar: I don't know what that. Is that a metaphor?
- 13:03>> Cameron: Literalism. Literal? Really?
- 13:05Yeah. I would not
- 13:08actually was thinking Samson. And then Skyler mentioned bible man. I was like,
- 13:11100% bible man.
- 13:12>> Cameron: Like, Samson brings a different
- 13:15vibe.
- 13:17>> Cameron: I was thinking my character was nerdy, and so Samson is just
- 13:20like, it didn't feel right. I was thinking the first thing
- 13:23I thought of when I read this was a night, but I was like,
- 13:26okay, night. Yeah, but so when he said religious, he said
- 13:29bible man. Like, oh, done. That's like a knight. It's literally a
- 13:32night. So I was like, it fit me perfectly.
- 13:33>> Skylar: Nate, I will say one thing that I was a little bit concerned about. You
- 13:36mentioned, that we have whatever our costume would
- 13:39realistically suggest. And, the crow carries
- 13:42a. 44 magnum revolver.
- 13:45I wasn't sure where he wanted to rule on that. It's probably a nerf guy.
- 13:48>> Cameron: Parents wouldn't leave. Yeah, it's a nerf gun.
- 13:50>> Cameron: It's a nerf guy, and he's.
- 13:52>> Skylar: He personally spray painted it black.
- 13:54>> Cameron: Yeah, but your dad actually got mad about it and made you put the orange tip
- 13:57back onto it. Yeah, exactly.
- 14:00>> Skylar: Said you're not taking that to school.
- 14:02Absolutely not.
- 14:04>> Cameron: We're not having a repeat.
- 14:06>> Cameron: No.
- 14:06>> Cameron: We're not having a repeat of 6th grade.
- 14:08>> Skylar: No. It's funny
- 14:11you say that, because I did have this whole idea that James is actually pretty new in
- 14:14town.
- 14:17Whether it's an issue involving James himself or just,
- 14:20like, his dad had to move them, or whatever the case. Yeah. James is. James is
- 14:23fairly new in town.
- 14:24>> Cameron: Okay. So there was actually
- 14:27some other characters that I. That I made that were built around
- 14:30some other different play sheets. They were a little bit more,
- 14:33like they're doing ones that people made. And I decided
- 14:36not to go with it because I just wanted to keep it really basic. But one of them is
- 14:39the troublemaker. Yeah. So the entire theme of was a
- 14:41prankster that. That just does weird stuff.
- 14:45And it would always kind of like a, like a bag of tricks kind of thing.
- 14:48Like, always has the thing he needs to, like, do something
- 14:51stupid.
- 14:51>> Skylar: Yeah.
- 14:52>> Cameron: but I didn't. But that character actually fits pretty well with some
- 14:54of that idea of, you know,
- 14:57this guy.
- 14:58>> Skylar: This guy.
- 14:59>> Cameron: And that brings us to our last
- 15:02character. Probably in some ways our least character.
- 15:05But I assume will be our most fun character.
- 15:08that's a joke about the character. Class of mundane. but
- 15:11this is Ella. So, Ella, introduce yourself.
- 15:14>> Cameron: Oh, Ella doesn't get a backstory.
- 15:16>> Cameron: Oh.
- 15:16>> Cameron: Oh, sorry.
- 15:17>> Skylar: I apologize.
- 15:18>> Cameron: I was gonna let you do your.
- 15:19>> Cameron: That's how mundane she is.
- 15:21>> Cameron: Ella sucks.
- 15:24>> Cameron: there's these three interesting characters, and then there's
- 15:27Ella.
- 15:28>> Mikayla: You gotta have some ballads. Come on.
- 15:31>> Cameron: Dear leaders, dear listeners. Please listen to this
- 15:34background. And you tell us in the comments wherever you so choose
- 15:37to comment. Does Ella actually suck?
- 15:40Ella is a self proclaimed skeptic. Who
- 15:43craves a typical Halloween filled with
- 15:45candy and fun. Her grounded nature
- 15:48might provide balance to the chaos. But she also
- 15:51finds herself questioning everything that
- 15:54happens around them.
- 15:55>> Cameron: So she's the straight man of the group.
- 15:57>> Cameron: Yeah, Ella definitely, just wants things
- 16:00to be normal. Why can't they be normal?
- 16:02>> Cameron: Please let this be.
- 16:03>> Skylar: Ella Holland is a solid balance to
- 16:06this situation. I'm excited for it.
- 16:09I agree with Nate. Ella does not suck. Ella is
- 16:12perfect for this situation. And Ella is an assessment.
- 16:14>> Cameron: And in some ways, Ella's the friend you need. Right? you do
- 16:17like crazy weird stuff. And you're your average twelve year old.
- 16:20And you need a friend to be like, hey, I don't really want to get in
- 16:23trouble.
- 16:24>> Skylar: Ella, get. Don't go for me.
- 16:26>> Cameron: Spooky Halloween.
- 16:27>> Cameron: So, Ella, tell us about yourself. What's your costume
- 16:30and etcetera?
- 16:32>> Cameron: Well, I imagine Ella as now that you
- 16:34mentioned her very milquetoast
- 16:37backstory. I, imagine her
- 16:40as like a really kind of whiny sort
- 16:42of kind of like, what's his name?
- 16:45Arnold from magic school bus.
- 16:46>> Cameron: That kind of kid.
- 16:48>> Cameron: And on that same vein, I thought.
- 16:50>> Mikayla: You were gonna say the train guy from Polar Express.
- 16:53>> Cameron: Oh, no, no, no. He's nerdy.
- 16:55Arnold's like the whiny nerd.
- 16:57>> Cameron: Ah.
- 16:58>> Cameron: And in that same vein, she is in a Miss frizzle
- 17:01costume. Complete
- 17:04with Barbell and four
- 17:06olympic weights on each side. Cause Miss
- 17:09Frizzle very famously was
- 17:12benching 405 for
- 17:14reps in the magic school bus.
- 17:17>> Cameron: Really?
- 17:17>> Cameron: She is canonically yoked.
- 17:20So she's got this big Miss Frizzle wig.
- 17:23I would imagine that she's
- 17:26speaks in guys. I don't know,
- 17:29that kind of this sort of voice. Either that or
- 17:32valley girl. I can only do two, really
- 17:35voices for a girl. For a girl.
- 17:37Like, whatever. Guys like, I
- 17:40don't know.
- 17:41>> Cameron: You're just gonna have to pick one lock.
- 17:43>> Cameron: I feel like, as a skeptic, she's gonna be the valley girl.
- 17:46The skeptical valley girl.
- 17:47>> Cameron: Okay.
- 17:48>> Cameron: Do you have a toy lizard?
- 17:50>> Skylar: Yes.
- 17:51>> Cameron: Okay.
- 17:51>> Skylar: Toy lizard.
- 17:53>> Cameron: She's like Shelsie from fishhooks.
- 17:56Girl, you just dropped something. My
- 17:58jaw.
- 18:01That is going to be Ella
- 18:03Gray.
- 18:04>> Skylar: I love that.
- 18:05>> Cameron: All right, so just to get you some intro,
- 18:08because, you know, each of us has a character. Each of us has a costume.
- 18:11I was actually, I'm actually going to ad libbing this. So I'm going to
- 18:14go. If you guys flip over your sheets, you're going to find in
- 18:17there. There's a little section quickly, about history.
- 18:20so I realized here that each of you guys has a
- 18:23pretty cool story. something that you kind of came up with on the
- 18:26fly. One of the great things about monster of the week, but
- 18:29we haven't really established, like, why we're together.
- 18:32You know, I'm starting you together. You're about to start trick or treating.
- 18:35But, in the history section, monster week, there is a
- 18:38short little ability, to go around as a group.
- 18:40Now, on each of your turns. And we'll come back from the
- 18:43top, going from, Alex and I
- 18:46want you to pick one of these. So just really quickly, I'm
- 18:49going to read through them. Just give a quick overview of what these backgrounds can
- 18:52be. But one of them is your close blood relations. Ask them exactly how
- 18:55close. So the way this would work in play would
- 18:58be, Alex would say, all right, I'm cousins
- 19:01with, or I am related to you. And then the person that
- 19:04you, you say that to says, okay, and we're cousins.
- 19:06Like, so it's a two part, you know, a two part way of making a
- 19:09connection with each other. The next one would be, they're destined to be your
- 19:12mentor. Tell them how this was revealed. It seems kind of
- 19:14weird, but, you know, go with it if you need to. your best friend
- 19:17in the world who you trust. Totally. so, you know, you could. You get to say,
- 19:20now, the fun part about that is you get to say, they're your best friend. They don't have to
- 19:23agree. so if you're the one friend that maybe is a little more
- 19:26attached than the others, the next one is arrival at first, but you
- 19:29come to a working arrangement. romantic entanglement,
- 19:32maybe stay away. It's a PG, you know, it's a PG podcast.
- 19:35Just friends from school or work or something. Ask them what
- 19:38you know. How do you know each other? maybe you do karate together. I don't
- 19:41know. They could have been the chosen one instead of you, but they failed
- 19:44some trial. That seems a little heavy. Maybe we're not trying to find
- 19:46Halloween. Jesus. I don't know. I
- 19:49don't know. Bobbleman might be, You
- 19:52saved their life back when they didn't know monsters were real. Or are
- 19:55they? Tell them what you saved them from. So I
- 19:58will start off the top with Alex. Alex, pick one of these
- 20:01and just establish a background quickly.
- 20:04>> Cameron: One of the ones you named or one from my.
- 20:05>> Cameron: Just one from your sheet. So I went through. Just real quick, I went through the
- 20:08sheet of the chosen. The chosen is obviously a pretty, you know, heavy
- 20:11one. each character is going to have a slightly different version of
- 20:14that with their own kind of background. I want you to follow what
- 20:17it says on the sheet.
- 20:18>> Cameron: You want me to pick one for each member?
- 20:20>> Cameron: No, just pick one person. Just, you know, you're gonna be interconnected.
- 20:23>> Cameron: They're the person you go to for advice on mortal
- 20:25stuff. and so it gives me some examples of very adult
- 20:28theme stuff. But I'm gonna go with the comic book theme, and I'm gonna
- 20:31go with Skyler's character,
- 20:33James. James. Because, I can't
- 20:36get comic books. But how do I get these comic books? Well, the
- 20:39punk kid who's allowed to watch rated r movies also likes
- 20:42comic books and thinks it's really cool
- 20:45they giving daredevil
- 20:47comics to the christian kid.
- 20:50>> Skylar: Let me slide it. Let me slide a couple.
- 20:51>> Cameron: Just be clear. I'm pretty sure most semi
- 20:54religious middle schoolers probably have this friend.
- 20:57>> Skylar: Yeah.
- 20:57>> Cameron: Gives them access to stuff.
- 20:58>> Cameron: Yeah, exactly. But on the flip, he
- 21:01also think he sees, James as,
- 21:04like, a little too
- 21:07edgy. And he's like, I need to save him
- 21:09because I'm clearly not a Christian. So, like, he needs
- 21:12me. Yeah, him the way, the truth.
- 21:15But I need him for comic books.
- 21:18>> Cameron: He needs Jesus, but I need daredevil.
- 21:21>> Cameron: Exactly.
- 21:23>> Cameron: All right. I love it. so that takes us to
- 21:26our next character. Maya, pick, one of the ones from your sheet.
- 21:29read it and tell us who it is, how it
- 21:32applies, and as you're doing. Yeah. Make sure to make a little
- 21:35note of who that relationship is with just so you have an idea.
- 21:38Again, this doesn't have to fit everybody. It just has to fit one other
- 21:40person. The. The weird little things that bind you all together.
- 21:44>> Skylar: These are pretty interpretive yeah, like, at the end of the day, it's like
- 21:47it can say one thing and you can kind of, like,
- 21:50adjust the interpretation of it.
- 21:52>> Cameron: Guys, we're playing pretend on the radio with our. With.
- 21:54>> Skylar: Yeah, exactly.
- 21:55>> Cameron: Friends to acquaintances. It's okay. We can make other stuff.
- 21:58>> Cameron: Yes.
- 21:59>> Cameron: And we can make more stuff up.
- 22:02>> Mikayla: I'm gonna say that I'm gonna go with the
- 22:05old friends who originally met through a long chain of
- 22:07coincidences.
- 22:08>> Cameron: Okay.
- 22:09>> Mikayla: I'm gonna say that with, Ella.
- 22:12Because I feel like our chain
- 22:15of coincidences were, you know, like
- 22:18my friends at school. There was no room
- 22:21at the table, so me and Ella sat next to each other. Cause Ella's kind of
- 22:24boring and people. You know what I mean?
- 22:27>> Skylar: You're telling me.
- 22:28>> Mikayla: We were kind of like the outcast together, you know?
- 22:31>> Skylar: Okay.
- 22:32>> Mikayla: Just different coincidences led us together of,
- 22:34you know, my friends were like, oh, sorry we didn't have room at
- 22:37the table for you today. Or, I don't know,
- 22:40meet up with. I don't think the library would work. Maybe it
- 22:43would, but I don't know. Just things
- 22:46like that.
- 22:47>> Cameron: So who's actually the cooler? Like,
- 22:50who do you think is the cooler one between the two of you?
- 22:52>> Skylar: Me, no question.
- 22:55>> Cameron: Ella. Who does Ella think is the cooler between the two of you? Ella's
- 22:58the cooler one. She's so
- 23:00cool.
- 23:01>> Cameron: someone else came to sit with her.
- 23:03>> Mikayla: There you go.
- 23:04>> Cameron: She didn't have to go chase him.
- 23:07And then we talked about, like, model trains
- 23:10and, you know, the perfect temperature to cook
- 23:14toast at. You know, everything
- 23:16is exciting as toast.
- 23:19And she kept coming back.
- 23:21>> Mikayla: Yeah.
- 23:22>> Cameron: Yeah, exactly.
- 23:25>> Mikayla: I just like it.
- 23:27>> Skylar: Yeah. Toast.
- 23:28>> Cameron: Yeah.
- 23:28>> Cameron: Oh, yeah. Butter. Oh, yeah.
- 23:31>> Cameron: You know, like, butter fry is different on bread than, like,
- 23:34mayonnaise.
- 23:36>> Skylar: Olive oil.
- 23:37>> Cameron: Wow.
- 23:38>> Cameron: Yeah, a lot, of interesting stuff.
- 23:42>> Cameron: Okay. I'm really loving that little that you can do after
- 23:45everything. You should probably just keep.
- 23:48>> Cameron: It's like you're unsure about what you just
- 23:50said. Like, if that's a conscious decision
- 23:53of.
- 23:53>> Cameron: A character, I think you need to amp that up even more. I love
- 23:56it. so in interest, we'll keep moving.
- 23:59James, tell us about your
- 24:02random connection.
- 24:04>> Skylar: All right, so I got mine picked out, but one at a time. One at a time.
- 24:07they once helped you get a singular item that is now part of your
- 24:10haven. Tell them what it is. So, first of all, I'm gonna
- 24:12pick Maya as the other kind of quirky, weird
- 24:15person. it was a my
- 24:18chemical romance cd that I
- 24:21couldn't get. Cause my parents were keeping a pretty close eye on me.
- 24:24But it had just come out, and it was a really big deal. Like,
- 24:27I'm not gonna not listen to the black parade
- 24:30for hours on end over and over and over again. Like
- 24:33every other mall goth that I'm hanging out with, which
- 24:35isn't any. I don't think there's any malgos in this group.
- 24:38But I go to the mall and I pretend that I'm hanging out with
- 24:41other malga. Set the hot topic there.
- 24:43>> Skylar: I don't know.
- 24:44>> Skylar: I probably just talk to the employees anyways, so.
- 24:46Yeah, so Maya made sure that I got ahold
- 24:49of that. My chemical romance cd. And so
- 24:52I really appreciate her for that. And, yeah,
- 24:55and I think on occasion we maybe bond a little bit
- 24:58over some pop punk music.
- 25:01>> Mikayla: Yeah.
- 25:02>> Cameron: And that brings us to, again, not least, but
- 25:04last, Ella, what's your
- 25:07connection to somebody else other than the pre existing lunch
- 25:10connection?
- 25:10>> Cameron: Other than good friends with, Maya?
- 25:13>> Cameron: Good, good friends.
- 25:16We're great friends.
- 25:17>> Skylar: She's concerned.
- 25:18>> Cameron: We're best friends.
- 25:20>> Cameron: I don't grabbling and just.
- 25:22>> Cameron: Yeah, I don't think that any of those would really actually work. So
- 25:25I would like to think that myself
- 25:28and Alex over here.
- 25:30Okay, we're just like. I think we're
- 25:33blood related. I'm just his super
- 25:36boring cousin that he has to
- 25:39be around. Otherwise, like, his mom is
- 25:42gonna just chew him out. It's like, if you're gonna
- 25:44go trick or treating, you better take Ella with
- 25:47you.
- 25:48>> Mikayla: She doesn't have many friends.
- 25:50>> Cameron: She doesn't have many friends. Just be nice. Just let
- 25:53her come with you. You'll survive. It's one night.
- 25:55>> Cameron: That kind of deal.
- 25:56>> Skylar: I love the idea that Alex sees her
- 25:59as, It's just like that girl from,
- 26:02arrested development. Which just completely
- 26:05forgets about, Ella's existence
- 26:07constantly.
- 26:09>> Cameron: Oh, so I'm George Michael. You're George forgetting about
- 26:12his girlfriend, what's her name? I keep
- 26:15digging.
- 26:15>> Cameron: Mayo egg.
- 26:21>> Skylar: Like Elizabeth or something. I don't know.
- 26:24That's the funny thing about it.
- 26:29He's just like, who? And she's like, ella.
- 26:31>> Cameron: Where's Ella? Oh.
- 26:36Which is funny because, I was thinking for Halloween as well, for
- 26:39the. What got me on the script is I really wanted to go to hollow trick or
- 26:42treating. But, like, this is the early two
- 26:45thousands. So this is when trick or treating with christians is,
- 26:48like, still, like, kind of iffy. Kind of
- 26:50iffy and stuff. But, like, my
- 26:53like, I think of him as my best friend. James
- 26:57really is. Like, he keeps every year tells me about trick
- 26:59or treat all the candy and stuff. And, like, the idea of dressing up as a
- 27:02superhero is, like, that's, like, the dream for
- 27:05Alex. And so come Halloween time, he's begging his parents.
- 27:08Begging his parents, please let me go trick training. Please let me go trick or
- 27:10treating. And they're like, fine, but
- 27:14only if you can represent God in
- 27:17some way. Be the light. And I'm like, I'll be
- 27:20Bible man. So I'm
- 27:23a win win. I'm a beacon in the darkness, so, no,
- 27:25whatever. And then they're like, and then bring Ella too.
- 27:28And I'm like, okay, fine. I got two
- 27:30stipulations.
- 27:31>> Mikayla: I'm fine.
- 27:32>> Cameron: I'll take both of them. So that's how I got in with
- 27:35James on Halloween. I had to take Ella. but I get
- 27:38to be Bible man. And then, I don't know how we
- 27:40insert.
- 27:41>> Cameron: So is Maya just hanging out with Ella? So you just come along?
- 27:45>> Mikayla: Yeah, basically.
- 27:47>> Skylar: Yeah.
- 27:47>> Cameron: Yeah.
- 27:47>> Skylar: I was gonna say, either you're hanging out with Ella or else. Yeah.
- 27:50Might have had a connection or something. Just because, like I said, I feel like,
- 27:53to some extent, we're friends after the. My chemical romance CD
- 27:56situation. So.
- 27:57>> Cameron: So really cool thing with this. And something that comes out
- 27:59of monster of the week when you do this is, without
- 28:02having to force it, everyone kind of builds these bonds.
- 28:05So you look at this, four people. Everyone has two bonds to
- 28:08another character. That just kind of happened organically.
- 28:11Right. There's a reason why these kids are together, and it's not forced,
- 28:14but it's not, you know, it's just.
- 28:16>> Cameron: It might be forced for tool.
- 28:17>> Cameron: Yeah, it's forced. It's narrative. It might be
- 28:20forced, you know, by character decision, but it's not narratively forced.
- 28:23Right. This is a completely normal group of pre teens that would be forced to
- 28:26go spend a few hours together on Halloween. so, you
- 28:28know, not to, you know, push it too hard. But that's one of the fun
- 28:31things with this game, right? Like, it sets itself up to breathe a little
- 28:34bit. so with all that being said, we've
- 28:37introduced our characters. You know, we know how they've been, you know,
- 28:40interconnected with each other. We kind of have an idea where their costumes
- 28:43are. Again, not getting too heavy with the crunchy stuff or, you know,
- 28:45any of the other stuff you can get into if you want to. But
- 28:49we are. And I'm going to read kind of the setting, introduction
- 28:52this.
- 28:52>> Skylar: Oh, yeah.
- 28:53>> Cameron: So, this is, you know, act one. You know, this
- 28:56whole one shot is called trick ah. Or treat
- 28:58fearfully. So the setting is, you know, you're a regular
- 29:01suburban town during Halloween night. you know, shadows loom
- 29:04larger than life, and every corner beckons with the promise
- 29:06of adventure. So as the sun
- 29:09dips below the horizon, the scent of fallen
- 29:12leaves mixes with the crisp, chill air of October
- 29:15that dances playfully along the streets of, the
- 29:18vibrant hues of Jack o lanterns flickering to life, painting
- 29:21the darkening world in glowing shades of orange and
- 29:24yellow. You and your friends glad in ghostly
- 29:26costumes, excitement bubbling within you, set
- 29:29out for your night of trick or treating. This year,
- 29:32however, feels peculiar. Is it
- 29:35that you are each a year older? finding yourself closer
- 29:38to being too cool for trick or treating? Is it
- 29:41the extra tales whispered among
- 29:43children and adults about a local legend of a haunted
- 29:46house? Is it the local
- 29:49troublemaker, the, local busybody, Miss
- 29:51Douglas, who is a not quite
- 29:54octogenarian, but you have no idea how old. She's just
- 29:56old that tells everyone that, you know,
- 29:59oh, trick or treating is getting more dangerous. Every time
- 30:02you hear about it. She has a different story about something bad that happened to
- 30:05somebody and to her, you know, every time
- 30:08she talks to your parents, it seems like she's saying, well, maybe we should
- 30:11just tone it down this year.
- 30:26>> Skylar: Thank you all for joining us for another episode of our
