Transcript
- 0:15Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily Abadi popping in with another installment of
- 0:19Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from Hurdle. These weeks they feel almost
- 0:25Speaker 1: indescribable and definitely fake. I feel like I wake up
- 0:29Speaker 1: every morning and I ask myself if we're still doing this.
- 0:32Speaker 1: But the good news is that we're in it together now.
- 0:36Speaker 1: As I've explained in the past, five Minute Friday is
- 0:40Speaker 1: my chance to share a story, offer up a prompt,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and then dive into some of the things that are
- 0:46Speaker 1: helping me get through the week that are highlights. If
- 0:50Speaker 1: you will. For today's installments, I'm going to share a
- 0:54Speaker 1: story from my run this morning. This morning, I went
- 0:58Speaker 1: out for a pretty stint. I just wanted to move
- 1:02Speaker 1: a little bit before I spent the rest of the
- 1:05Speaker 1: day into the evening where I sit right now at
- 1:08Speaker 1: my new desk, which makes me so happy. And I
- 1:11Speaker 1: was about a mile in when I felt the wind
- 1:14Speaker 1: blowing directly at me head on, and I was thinking
- 1:18Speaker 1: about how lucky I felt to be running, and how
- 1:22Speaker 1: I would feel tomorrow if I woke up and someone
- 1:26Speaker 1: told me that I couldn't do this anymore, that I
- 1:30Speaker 1: couldn't go out for my run. Of course, instantly when
- 1:35Speaker 1: I think about that, I get a little defensive, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: I feel frustrated, and I'm angry about the circumstance. But
- 1:41Speaker 1: like so many things in my life, I've come to
- 1:44Speaker 1: understand that there is no use in being mad about
- 1:47Speaker 1: the things that we cannot control. Still, it happens, right,
- 1:53Speaker 1: I'm mad about this. I am lonely in my apartment.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I miss my friends and my family, despite honestly feeling
- 2:00Speaker 1: more connected to so many of them than ever.
- 2:03Speaker 2: As we do this whole thing from a.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Distance, I am mad about the things that are supposed
- 2:09Speaker 1: to be and aren't. And that's normal, That's okay. I
- 2:15Speaker 1: thought to myself, what happens when you identify as a
- 2:18Speaker 1: runner and you're not allowed to run. It's like when
- 2:22Speaker 1: you're injured and you feel stuck. You know the joys
- 2:26Speaker 1: of movements so well, it's like second nature. If you
- 2:31Speaker 1: close your eyes, you can feel the corners of your
- 2:34Speaker 1: mouth turning up just a little bit when you think
- 2:36Speaker 1: about that last great moment with the sun hitting your back,
- 2:42Speaker 1: the sound of your feet hitting the ground, your breath
- 2:45Speaker 1: deepening with every single stride. In that moment around mile one,
- 2:51Speaker 1: I had a thought that I am more than just
- 2:54Speaker 1: a runner. Despite identifying that way, I am more than
- 2:58Speaker 1: the words that are in my Instagram bio, more than
- 3:03Speaker 1: just an eight time marathon or all of those experiences
- 3:07Speaker 1: that have tested my will and overall strength. They have
- 3:10Speaker 1: made me who I am today. But I am more
- 3:13Speaker 1: than those right now. No matter what happens, one thing
- 3:18Speaker 1: is for sure that we have the opportunity to define
- 3:22Speaker 1: ourselves and maybe redefine ourselves, to show up. Regardless of
- 3:27Speaker 1: whether you have been laid off or lost loved ones,
- 3:31Speaker 1: or feel like so many others that you are helpless.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Right now, you have the opportunity to show up for you.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So I ask you, who are you? Who are you?
- 3:47Speaker 1: The truth is, if I can't run, I'm gonna be okay.
- 3:50Speaker 1: If things feel hard, it's gonna be okay. If things
- 3:55Speaker 1: are shut down through June, I will be another year older,
- 3:59Speaker 1: but we are going to be oh okay. We are
- 4:03Speaker 1: bigger than those feelings of uncertainty. We are bigger than
- 4:07Speaker 1: our associations. Our purpose, our being is defined by so
- 4:11Speaker 1: much more than who we may be from nine to
- 4:15Speaker 1: five or what is in that social media bio. On
- 4:21Speaker 1: my run today, I found peace with that, and when
- 4:25Speaker 1: my watch ticked to three point one miles. I slowed,
- 4:29Speaker 1: I took in a deep breath, I came inside and
- 4:33Speaker 1: I journaled this question. The prompt I am offering you today,
- 4:39Speaker 1: how do you define yourself? Who is it that you
- 4:42Speaker 1: really are, not that role that you might play, or
- 4:47Speaker 1: how you are concerned that people perceive you to be.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Although for so many that is valuable. But talk to
- 4:54Speaker 1: me about your character, think about your values, and in
- 4:58Speaker 1: this process understand that we have the opportunity to define
- 5:03Speaker 1: ourselves each and every single day. Again, this week's prompt,
- 5:09Speaker 1: how do you define yourself? My picks of the week.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Let's see really great article I read earlier from Runners
- 5:18Speaker 1: World about how to respect social distancing uncrowded roots. Again,
- 5:24Speaker 1: I'll put all of these picks into the show notes.
- 5:28Speaker 1: In the article, they point out that a recent study
- 5:30Speaker 1: found that nationwide trail usage has increased by nearly two
- 5:33Speaker 1: hundred percent. But they offer some really good strategies places
- 5:39Speaker 1: to go, things to do to make sure that you
- 5:42Speaker 1: are being responsible and staying safe as you get out
- 5:44Speaker 1: there and you move. My book pick is Heart Talk
- 5:48Speaker 1: by Cleo Wade. It's a collection of poems that really
- 5:53Speaker 1: are just giving me all of the fuels right now.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And I know I've talked about this time and time again,
- 6:00Speaker 1: but every morning I do a few things without a doubt,
- 6:04Speaker 1: and one of those is read the daily meditation from
- 6:08Speaker 1: Journey to the Heart by Melanie Beattie. I might be
- 6:11Speaker 1: totally butchering her last name, and for that, I am
- 6:13Speaker 1: so sorry, but her words always really helped me keep
- 6:17Speaker 1: things in perspective and start the day on a positive note.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Another highlight, I'm going to give you guys a spoiler alert.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Last week I recorded with Gabby Bernstein. I'll be bringing
- 6:29Speaker 1: our conversation to the pod very soon. And last Sunday
- 6:34Speaker 1: she offered an anxiety relief workshop and it was really
- 6:40Speaker 1: just a lot of the things that I felt like
- 6:42Speaker 1: I needed right now, so I highly encourage you to
- 6:46Speaker 1: check that out. As usual, I'm going to end us
- 6:49Speaker 1: on a positive note today by telling you to take
- 6:53Speaker 1: this time to make sure that you are reaching out
- 6:56Speaker 1: to the people that you love and telling them that
- 6:59Speaker 1: you love them.
- 7:00Speaker 2: It warms my heart.
- 7:02Speaker 1: So much to be in much more constant communication with
- 7:07Speaker 1: not just my family, but my friends, the people that
- 7:10Speaker 1: I miss so much when I'm so tirelessly running around
- 7:15Speaker 1: the city and the country and the world for work,
- 7:18Speaker 1: and that sometimes when we get busy, we forget to
- 7:21Speaker 1: check in.
- 7:22Speaker 2: So now the silver lining.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Tell the people that you love that you love them,
- 7:26Speaker 1: reach out and say hi, no matter how long it
- 7:29Speaker 1: has been, and know that whoever's on the other side
- 7:33Speaker 1: of that, the receiving end of that is going to
- 7:37Speaker 1: appreciate it.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Stay safe, guys.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Sending you so much love from my little home to
- 7:44Speaker 1: yours at Emiliabadi at Hurdle Podcast Another hurdle conquered.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time.
