- 0:00Speaker 1: What's good, guys. I am Jordan's Omley. This is eating
- 0:04Speaker 1: while broke check the apron. I'm with my good friend
- 0:07Speaker 1: Colleen Witt, who I've known for a long time, one
- 0:11Speaker 1: of the first people I met out here in l
- 0:12Speaker 1: A when I moved from Seattle. So I'm really happy
- 0:16Speaker 1: to be here. And I'm a producer, musician, singer, songwriter.
- 0:20Speaker 1: UH do a little bit of everything, saying wrap cook,
- 0:24Speaker 1: So today we are making one of my favorite things
- 0:26Speaker 1: to make, and a great meal to make if you
- 0:28Speaker 1: don't have a big budget, which is breakfast burritos. Because
- 0:31Speaker 1: when I moved to Seattle, they turned me out out
- 0:33Speaker 1: here and let so I've got hash Brown's going right now,
- 0:39Speaker 1: which kind of take the longest to make, so I've
- 0:41Speaker 1: had those cooking for a minute. I've got my spicy
- 0:43Speaker 1: refried beans going right here, which actually I'm gonna add
- 0:47Speaker 1: some cheese because cheese and beans is, you know, two
- 0:50Speaker 1: of the best words in the English language, So we're
- 0:53Speaker 1: gonna get that going. I've got um jalapeno. I've got
- 0:58Speaker 1: some red onion going over here. That's a flavor combination
- 1:03Speaker 1: that I use and I don't know most most of
- 1:06Speaker 1: what I cook unless it's specific to like a region.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I'm always cooking with peppers and onions, So I've got
- 1:12Speaker 1: that going. Uh. And then we've got some Colleen didn't
- 1:17Speaker 1: know what this was, which is hilarious to me. So
- 1:20Speaker 1: if you live in l A and you don't know
- 1:21Speaker 1: what dys so is, you just ain't doing it. I
- 1:24Speaker 1: heard the word guy. We had it was off camera.
- 1:27Speaker 1: She looked at this thing like a like a cow
- 1:29Speaker 1: at a new gate. I didn't know what to expect. Um.
- 1:33Speaker 1: So this is beet theresa, which is a must um
- 1:37Speaker 1: for breakfast burritos in my opinion. Although you can make
- 1:39Speaker 1: them with whatever chicken. You could do a vegetarian, you
- 1:42Speaker 1: could do a soada, whatever you like. But for me
- 1:47Speaker 1: is the way to go. Um. And then we got cheese, salsa,
- 1:49Speaker 1: we've got eggs, we've got avocado. Um. You know, it's
- 1:54Speaker 1: not one of those dishes that's super complicated. I think
- 1:56Speaker 1: it really is just about getting ingredients that you think
- 1:59Speaker 1: work well the other and all this stuff is it's
- 2:02Speaker 1: good together. And I'm not I'm I'm completely not shocked
- 2:07Speaker 1: that your dish would come with all these ingredients because
- 2:11Speaker 1: I've eaten at your house and You're a real You're
- 2:15Speaker 1: the real deal. I like to cook. I grew up
- 2:18Speaker 1: around like Dad is an incredible cook, so I just
- 2:21Speaker 1: grew up around it. I've always loved to cook and
- 2:23Speaker 1: I love to eat. So now that we kind of
- 2:26Speaker 1: have the basis of your meal, I'm gonna saw this.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I just want to get to know you more. Um.
- 2:35Speaker 1: And uh, it's a little smoky in here, guys. So
- 2:38Speaker 1: if I choked up, no one judged me because I'm
- 2:40Speaker 1: one of those people that every burner and if they
- 2:43Speaker 1: had another burner, I'd have that one going too. So
- 2:45Speaker 1: we're working in here today. We are definitely working in here.
- 2:48Speaker 1: So um, Jordan's has worked, like I said, with the best.
- 2:53Speaker 1: But one of the most amazing things about Jordan's story
- 2:55Speaker 1: is how you got your start. Tell us about it.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I know I had something to what your day job
- 3:02Speaker 1: actually right, Well, yeah it did eventually it did. Yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Like I said, I was, I was rapping at a
- 3:08Speaker 1: young age and I was Um. I was signed when
- 3:12Speaker 1: I was fourteen years old to Sony form a development
- 3:16Speaker 1: deal and I got in the studio actually in Seattle
- 3:20Speaker 1: with Sir mix a lot when I was really young
- 3:23Speaker 1: and Sir mix a lot kind of took me under
- 3:25Speaker 1: his wing, introduced me to a lot of people, and
- 3:27Speaker 1: I ended up on tour with Snoop and Mystical and
- 3:30Speaker 1: Digital Underground, and I was like, you know, live in
- 3:33Speaker 1: a high school life, um, singing in choir, and then
- 3:37Speaker 1: I was on the road, like rapping with these legends.
- 3:40Speaker 1: But how did you in the crossing paths with them
- 3:42Speaker 1: if you're in Seattle? Mix a lot knew these dudes,
- 3:45Speaker 1: so they would come to they would come to Seattle
- 3:48Speaker 1: to do shows, and then Mix would take me to
- 3:50Speaker 1: the shows. He'd introduced me to him with my boy
- 3:52Speaker 1: the Dog, who was someone like a local kind of
- 3:55Speaker 1: a local legend up in Seattle, and the Dog kind
- 3:57Speaker 1: of put me in touch with all these dudes. And
- 3:59Speaker 1: then I started doing show was with them, and um,
- 4:01Speaker 1: that let me know that I at least had the
- 4:05Speaker 1: talent to do what I wanted to do. But at
- 4:07Speaker 1: the time I was one of the funniest things that
- 4:11Speaker 1: people don't know is I've never drank in my life.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I've never even tasted alcohol. I've never had a drug,
- 4:17Speaker 1: a cigarette, nothing. So when I was doing shows with
- 4:20Speaker 1: these dudes, like the after parties were like every cliche
- 4:23Speaker 1: you could think of for these crazy after parties was
- 4:25Speaker 1: super real and I was uncomfortable. So I would go
- 4:29Speaker 1: like back to my hotel room or wherever we were staying,
- 4:32Speaker 1: and I would be writing pop songs secretly, like I
- 4:36Speaker 1: love to sing and I was inquired. So I started
- 4:38Speaker 1: writing pop songs at a young age and fell in
- 4:42Speaker 1: love with that too, so I kind of I was
- 4:45Speaker 1: doing a little bit of everything. Um, when I've decided
- 4:47Speaker 1: I wanted to move out of Seattle because I didn't
- 4:50Speaker 1: see a musical future there at the time, I got
- 4:54Speaker 1: a job selling over the phone for Direct TV. They
- 4:58Speaker 1: had an office in Orange County. And the whole time
- 5:02Speaker 1: this is going on, your parents are saying what exactly?
- 5:05Speaker 1: They my dad and my bonus mom, Nina, his wife,
- 5:11Speaker 1: we're really supportive. My mom was a little apprehensive about
- 5:14Speaker 1: me doing rapper music at first, but she eventually came
- 5:18Speaker 1: around when I worked with one of her favorite singers.
- 5:20Speaker 1: We could talk about that later, but yeah, it was
- 5:24Speaker 1: it was cool. They were supportive, you know, they knew
- 5:26Speaker 1: that I was going to do it anyway. At a
- 5:28Speaker 1: young age. I told him, Look, school is not my thing.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I'm not going to college. I'm not gonna get good
- 5:32Speaker 1: grades in high school, but I'm definitely gonna make it
- 5:35Speaker 1: as a as a rapper or a songwriter. And they
- 5:37Speaker 1: were like, okay, so thank god it works because there
- 5:40Speaker 1: was no plan b um, but yeah, they were cool.
- 5:43Speaker 1: So I made the move and I was in uh Irvine,
- 5:49Speaker 1: UM selling direct TV day job nine to five type
- 5:53Speaker 1: stuff for UM yeah for about three months. UM. Early
- 6:00Speaker 1: here in my life, I had been in different cities.
- 6:04Speaker 1: The Bay Area was one of them, and I had
- 6:07Speaker 1: made some connections that I saved like business cards in
- 6:09Speaker 1: my phone type stuff. And one of the connections that
- 6:12Speaker 1: I made was to a big producer up in the
- 6:14Speaker 1: Bay Area. His name was Nardam Michael Walden. He said,
- 6:18Speaker 1: legend in the world of pop music, and UM. I
- 6:21Speaker 1: started calling everybody and everybody turned me down. Everybody said
- 6:24Speaker 1: no to wanting to meet me now that I was
- 6:25Speaker 1: in l A. But he was one of the only
- 6:28Speaker 1: people that said yes. So I took a trip up
- 6:31Speaker 1: to the Bay Area. I drove my like old broke
- 6:35Speaker 1: Honda cord that had two d fourteen thousand miles on it,
- 6:39Speaker 1: but it worked and it got me up to the
- 6:41Speaker 1: Bay and I met with him and he had me
- 6:44Speaker 1: sing like my three best songs he wanted me to sing,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and he hated all didn't like one song, and so
- 6:51Speaker 1: I was like really deflated walking out of the studio
- 6:53Speaker 1: because I was like, damn, like I really thought these
- 6:55Speaker 1: were good songs and I thought this was like a
- 6:56Speaker 1: big break for me. And as I was leaving, this
- 6:59Speaker 1: dude came out of the control room and he was like, hey,
- 7:02Speaker 1: he doesn't like anything, so I don't sweat it, like
- 7:04Speaker 1: I thought your songs were great. And I was like,
- 7:06Speaker 1: thank you, man, but like I'm feeling pretty down, and
- 7:08Speaker 1: he was like no, Like, I'm a producer, my name's
- 7:10Speaker 1: Mike Monty, and I want to give you this beat
- 7:13Speaker 1: c D of my tracks. So I was like okay,
- 7:15Speaker 1: bet So Mike gave me this beat t D and
- 7:19Speaker 1: I drove back six hours back to my place where
- 7:22Speaker 1: I was living in Orange County from the Bay Area,
- 7:25Speaker 1: and I wrote to all of them, every track and
- 7:27Speaker 1: I just fell in love with his music. And I
- 7:30Speaker 1: called him when I got back to Orange County and
- 7:33Speaker 1: I was like, bro, your tracks are amazing, Like I
- 7:35Speaker 1: don't say I love him, and I wrote like crazy
- 7:37Speaker 1: to him. He was like, which one did you write to?
- 7:39Speaker 1: I said all of them. So he was like, okay, Well,
- 7:43Speaker 1: he said, the next time you're in the bay, uh,
- 7:46Speaker 1: come by and show me the songs. I was like, okay, bet,
- 7:48Speaker 1: hung up, got in the car, drove six hours. UM
- 7:55Speaker 1: showed up at his house. Because my dad always told
- 7:57Speaker 1: me when I was young, this is there was no
- 7:59Speaker 1: like this was like a long time ago, keep in mind,
- 8:02Speaker 1: so I map quested this. There was no like GPS,
- 8:05Speaker 1: like I printed out my directions up map quest. If
- 8:07Speaker 1: you don't know what map quest is, I don't know
- 8:09Speaker 1: what to tell you. You're too young, but that's okay.
- 8:12Speaker 1: So after Um, after I made that drive, I just
- 8:16Speaker 1: showed up at his place because because the addresses on
- 8:18Speaker 1: his business card. So when I showed up at his house,
- 8:21Speaker 1: he opened the door and he was like, I thought
- 8:23Speaker 1: you were back in Orange County and I was like, yeah,
- 8:25Speaker 1: but you said the next time I'm in the Bay,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I could come and show you my songs, and I'm here,
- 8:29Speaker 1: so what's up. So it was just one of those
- 8:32Speaker 1: moments where like I took a chance and I just
- 8:35Speaker 1: went for it, and thank god it worked because Mike
- 8:38Speaker 1: and I have been writing together for eighteen years since
- 8:43Speaker 1: that day, so I went back to the Bay area. Um,
- 8:46Speaker 1: and he loved those songs. He loved Yeah, he loved
- 8:49Speaker 1: the songs. We had a great chemistry. So I went
- 8:51Speaker 1: back to Orange County where I was working still my
- 8:53Speaker 1: nine to five job, and Mike was in the Bay.
- 8:55Speaker 1: So I was like, I have to figure out a
- 8:57Speaker 1: way to make this work somehow. So by a Fluke,
- 9:03Speaker 1: the boss of the Direct TV location, who was super
- 9:07Speaker 1: rich and super cool, but he was also like very
- 9:10Speaker 1: about his business. He had his assistant come over my desk.
- 9:13Speaker 1: She was like, hey, Tom wants to talk to you
- 9:14Speaker 1: in his office about you leaving for these back to
- 9:17Speaker 1: back days. I'm like okay, So I go. And by
- 9:21Speaker 1: the way, I had like a crush on this girl,
- 9:22Speaker 1: like I was. I knew I was about to get
- 9:24Speaker 1: scolded in front of this girl who like the cool.
- 9:28Speaker 1: So we go to Tom's office. Tom's like, look, man,
- 9:30Speaker 1: you left two days. You didn't give me any notice,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and you know the policy here. Unfortunately, like that's just
- 9:37Speaker 1: not okay, um, but um, I need you to sign
- 9:42Speaker 1: this paperwork before you leave. And now I'm pleading for
- 9:45Speaker 1: my job. I'm like, I'm like begging in front of
- 9:49Speaker 1: Tom in front of his assistant, looking like a fool,
- 9:52Speaker 1: and he said, it just is what it is. I've
- 9:54Speaker 1: made my decision. He like slid this envelope over to me,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and it was like a Manila full there was paperwork
- 10:00Speaker 1: in it. But I opened it up and on the
- 10:03Speaker 1: top there was a cashier's check on top of the
- 10:06Speaker 1: envelope and it was made out to me UM, and
- 10:09Speaker 1: it was in the amount of thirty dollars. And I
- 10:12Speaker 1: looked up at him and I'm like, I don't know
- 10:14Speaker 1: what this is. And he goes, look, I heard what
- 10:17Speaker 1: you made up in the bay, Um. You need to
- 10:23Speaker 1: take this money and get as far away from here
- 10:25Speaker 1: and go back to there and do as much of
- 10:28Speaker 1: that as you can. And I just instantly started crying, ugly, crying,
- 10:33Speaker 1: like you know what I mean like that, And it's
- 10:36Speaker 1: in front of this girl. No, it couldn't. It couldn't
- 10:39Speaker 1: have been worse. Do you think she knew about it?
- 10:41Speaker 1: I don't know. She was shocked too. But he had
- 10:44Speaker 1: heard the music because I played it, you know, for
- 10:47Speaker 1: people around the office, um at a party, and he
- 10:51Speaker 1: believed in it. And he was just like, look, man,
- 10:53Speaker 1: life is about paying it forward. I'm like, I will
- 10:55Speaker 1: pay you back this money. And he was like, no,
- 10:57Speaker 1: this is a gift. The way you can pay me
- 11:00Speaker 1: act is by doing good for other people. And anytime
- 11:02Speaker 1: you get the chance, just do good for people. So
- 11:06Speaker 1: he gave me this check. I left the building with
- 11:08Speaker 1: this check, went to the bank and put this check
- 11:10Speaker 1: in my account, which was overdrawn by like eighty two bucks.
- 11:13Speaker 1: And I went up to the teller and she was like, uh,
- 11:16Speaker 1: this is nice. I'm like, yeah, this is crazy. What's
- 11:19Speaker 1: my balance? And she's like, you're overdrawn eighty two. So
- 11:23Speaker 1: I had to wait for this check to clear, and
- 11:24Speaker 1: then I called Mike and I'm like, bro, I'm moving,
- 11:26Speaker 1: Like I got money, I'm moving. That the biggest amount
- 11:29Speaker 1: of money you had seen at that time. Oh yeah,
- 11:33Speaker 1: of course, And none of that money was for me.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I gave that money to Mike to book him out
- 11:38Speaker 1: pretty much for six months. We like, I've moved. I
- 11:41Speaker 1: used that money to move, got a place, booked out
- 11:45Speaker 1: Mike's work for many months, and we just got to work.
- 11:49Speaker 1: And since that day we've never stopped. It's just been
- 11:53Speaker 1: it's just been amazing. So really, that guy Tom Martindale
- 11:57Speaker 1: Direct TV. Everybody that man, right, there. I gotta put
- 12:03Speaker 1: my hash Browns in here with this. You kind of
- 12:05Speaker 1: want when you're cooking a breakfast burrito, you really want
- 12:09Speaker 1: the flavors of everything to start working together as soon
- 12:11Speaker 1: as possible. So when you feel like you've got your
- 12:13Speaker 1: Theresa done, which I do, and you feel like you've
- 12:15Speaker 1: got your hash Browns done, you want to like let
- 12:18Speaker 1: them get happy together. Okay. And I saw you dump
- 12:21Speaker 1: the onions and I dumped onions. Yeah, you like you
- 12:24Speaker 1: really want this thing to be like like beach front
- 12:27Speaker 1: property in Flavortown. You know what I'm saying. When you
- 12:30Speaker 1: buy into it, you really want that. So I get
- 12:32Speaker 1: this going all together because we're pretty much good now.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I haven't even got the burner off. Like we're at
- 12:37Speaker 1: the point with this stuff where now it's eggs clatillas
- 12:42Speaker 1: and we start putting it together, so we're good. This
- 12:45Speaker 1: looks so it's gonna be it's gonna be good. Um,
- 12:49Speaker 1: so we're doing eggs nice. So yeah, that's um. That's
- 12:52Speaker 1: kind of how I got my break, honestly. And then
- 12:54Speaker 1: Mike and I started working like crazy. We signed a
- 12:57Speaker 1: publishing deal um with Sony through Big John Platt shout
- 13:02Speaker 1: out to Big John for changing my life, and we
- 13:06Speaker 1: found our first artist. We signed a girl that was
- 13:09Speaker 1: twelve years old. We believed in her. Her name is
- 13:11Speaker 1: Tory Kelly. She's a pretty amazing singer. If you guys
- 13:15Speaker 1: don't know who Tory Kelly is, she's one of the
- 13:17Speaker 1: best singers in the world and she's gone on to
- 13:19Speaker 1: do really well. And that signing Tori and developing Tori
- 13:22Speaker 1: was a big break for us UM And then we
- 13:25Speaker 1: got lucky. We got in with the Backstreet Boys, we
- 13:27Speaker 1: got in with Pussycat Dolls, Brandy And at this point,
- 13:31Speaker 1: what when do you personally feel like you arrived? Like
- 13:35Speaker 1: when was it? Like, I'm sure that the thirty dollar
- 13:38Speaker 1: check was confirmation that you were on the right path. Yeah,
- 13:41Speaker 1: that did make because you know, the whole time, you're like,
- 13:43Speaker 1: I think I'm good. What if I'm awful? Like do
- 13:47Speaker 1: you ever watch American Idol or The Voice and you see, well,
- 13:49Speaker 1: the voices talent, But when you see American Idols some
- 13:51Speaker 1: of these people auditioning, you're like, someone know you're not good, man, Like,
- 13:58Speaker 1: you have to know you're not good. But with this,
- 14:01Speaker 1: it was like, I think I'm good enough. People have
- 14:03Speaker 1: told me that I have talent and I really hope so,
- 14:05Speaker 1: but yeah, that was confirmation for sure. So I did
- 14:08Speaker 1: feel like then when we started getting in rooms with
- 14:10Speaker 1: people that I was like big, Like when I was
- 14:12Speaker 1: in the room with Brandy writing songs for Brandy's album
- 14:15Speaker 1: and I'm a massive Brandy fan, I'm like, yea, this
- 14:18Speaker 1: is like I'm on, yeah, yeah, this is crazy. So
- 14:22Speaker 1: it wasn't the checks. It was like, it's almost like
- 14:26Speaker 1: my favorite rappers, jay Z, of course, So like if
- 14:28Speaker 1: I ever first of all people who know me, no,
- 14:32Speaker 1: I can't even But if I think that, if I
- 14:36Speaker 1: ever got an opportunity to interview jay Z, that's it.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'm like, I've arrived. You can't. I'm almost Beyonce level
- 14:44Speaker 1: at this point. You know what I'm saying. I'm not mad,
- 14:47Speaker 1: I get it. So yeah, it was more than people
- 14:49Speaker 1: than the checks. Honestly, anybody in music, I don't care
- 14:52Speaker 1: how big you are, if you want to use that
- 14:55Speaker 1: term or successful. Everybody knows that money comes and goes
- 14:58Speaker 1: in this business. Sometimes you got it, sometimes you don't.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Like if I got songs on the radio that are
- 15:03Speaker 1: doing well or songs that are streaming well, business is
- 15:06Speaker 1: popping but there's times where you don't and then you're
- 15:09Speaker 1: you know, you've got to live a little tighter, and
- 15:11Speaker 1: that's just the way it is. So I've never really
- 15:13Speaker 1: defined success in music by money. It was more about
- 15:17Speaker 1: like the opportunities, because once you get into the business,
- 15:21Speaker 1: you realize how hard it is to get in rooms
- 15:24Speaker 1: with people. Anybody could write songs, and today there's so
- 15:27Speaker 1: many people writing songs off their laptops sending them in
- 15:30Speaker 1: from their bedroom, which is amazing because they didn't have
- 15:32Speaker 1: that when I started out. But it's really hard to
- 15:36Speaker 1: get in a room with people, you know what I mean, Like,
- 15:39Speaker 1: like you're a fan of jay Z. I was a
- 15:41Speaker 1: big fan of Tech nine and I got to fly
- 15:44Speaker 1: to Kansas City and work with Tech nine, you know,
- 15:46Speaker 1: and that was like that's hard. That those kind of
- 15:49Speaker 1: things made it more like believable for me. So was
- 15:53Speaker 1: there ever a point where you made money and you
- 15:55Speaker 1: kinda blew it and then all the time, are you
- 16:00Speaker 1: kidding me? I've rented this house that was five bedrooms
- 16:05Speaker 1: and it was me living in it because I was
- 16:07Speaker 1: I was like, this is amazing and I want to
- 16:09Speaker 1: feel like a baller. And I built a shoe room,
- 16:11Speaker 1: and I got four hundred pairs of sneakers, and I
- 16:14Speaker 1: was just an idiot, and I blew money like crazy
- 16:16Speaker 1: all the time. And then you hit a point where
- 16:18Speaker 1: you're like, I don't know, you realize what's more important,
- 16:21Speaker 1: like stability and paying taxes and other things like that
- 16:25Speaker 1: that I didn't want to do for a long time.
- 16:27Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean, of course there's plenty of that stuff.
- 16:35Speaker 1: So since your career has taken off, this particular meal,
- 16:40Speaker 1: this signature dish, I'm guessing you still eat every once
- 16:44Speaker 1: in a while for luxury or has there been a
- 16:46Speaker 1: point in the last five years where you had to
- 16:49Speaker 1: eat it out of survival. Well, survival is so dramatic,
- 16:54Speaker 1: you know what I mean. If you're living in in
- 16:56Speaker 1: l a you're all right no matter how broke you are.
- 16:59Speaker 1: There's people that around this world that are doing a
- 17:01Speaker 1: lot worse. So survival is tough to say. But I
- 17:03Speaker 1: will say that is just really hard, because that's what
- 17:06Speaker 1: I'm saying. But if you can afford to pay rent
- 17:08Speaker 1: in l A, h, you know you're surviving. Yeah, that's true.
- 17:12Speaker 1: But I will say this, this is a meal that
- 17:16Speaker 1: my wife loves. I like to cook breakfast every weekend
- 17:20Speaker 1: if I can for us, and this is just one
- 17:22Speaker 1: that like, she absolutely loves it. So I make this
- 17:25Speaker 1: meal a lot at the house, so yeah, we do
- 17:27Speaker 1: eat this one. I'm just looking at this meal. I
- 17:30Speaker 1: feel like this is going to be drafted into first
- 17:34Speaker 1: of all, probably take ownership with my husband and be
- 17:36Speaker 1: like I came up with this dish. You know it's
- 17:40Speaker 1: going to see an episode of this, like stop that
- 17:42Speaker 1: line probably when I serviced when he's like, where'd you
- 17:46Speaker 1: get this? Eating well broke but um, but yeah, this
- 17:51Speaker 1: dish looks smells with all the ingredients. I'm like completely
- 17:55Speaker 1: shocked that you can have such a real rest around
- 18:00Speaker 1: almost all dish for so cheap, and it's not even
- 18:03Speaker 1: unhealthy because most of the meals we see that com
- 18:06Speaker 1: on this show are just you know they're unhealthy because
- 18:10Speaker 1: I get it. Let me give you a tip to
- 18:12Speaker 1: for people out there when you're about to do yours.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Uh you want to put I like to cook it
- 18:19Speaker 1: in the pant overhead shot, overhead camp. Don't clean your pan.
- 18:23Speaker 1: That's that's flavor. That's flavor. Just put that thing right
- 18:27Speaker 1: on there and let it get happy. Just look the
- 18:30Speaker 1: outside get dirty, or something. You're assuming that the part
- 18:33Speaker 1: I just put it on the outside. See what you
- 18:36Speaker 1: do is once this is ready, just is once it's warm.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Now you take this thing off and the bottom part
- 18:41Speaker 1: is the inside, and now I start filling it. So
- 18:44Speaker 1: I'll show you this part is a little bit of
- 18:46Speaker 1: like a a multi layered process because I like to
- 18:52Speaker 1: I like to load it up a certain kind of way.
- 18:55Speaker 1: But but I think it's interesting about George too. Was like,
- 18:57Speaker 1: while I was watching and Cook, I'm like, oh, he
- 18:59Speaker 1: needs He's clearly going to need like way more pots
- 19:01Speaker 1: and pants. But no, you're just like swapping flavors the
- 19:05Speaker 1: entire exactly. You let everything get happy together. Look at that.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Now we do this. So who so far in your
- 19:14Speaker 1: career would you say, uh, probably left the most I
- 19:21Speaker 1: guess impact. Mm hmm. That's a good question. Who left
- 19:26Speaker 1: the most impact creatively? Or like, like, who did I
- 19:30Speaker 1: like the most? Those are different questions. You can answer
- 19:32Speaker 1: both because I'll use both of us. So I think
- 19:36Speaker 1: that somebody that left like a really big impact on
- 19:41Speaker 1: me personally that I went in with was Mariah. So
- 19:48Speaker 1: this was one of those moments where it's like, this
- 19:50Speaker 1: is a legend okay. But the reason why it left
- 19:54Speaker 1: such an impact was she was not like how you
- 19:59Speaker 1: might think in your head of how you know someone
- 20:02Speaker 1: so big would be in the studio. She was very
- 20:05Speaker 1: like when she would listen down to her vocals that
- 20:08Speaker 1: we were going through, she would say, oh, like, oh no,
- 20:10Speaker 1: don't play that one, like that's not it. And I'm like,
- 20:12Speaker 1: you're like anything you sing is amazing, Like this take
- 20:15Speaker 1: that you don't think is good is so good. And
- 20:18Speaker 1: I think that like it showed me a level of like,
- 20:22Speaker 1: even when you get to the top, you still have
- 20:24Speaker 1: to be so vigilant and you still have to be
- 20:27Speaker 1: so selective about what you put out there and what
- 20:29Speaker 1: people here. And I kind of thought that was amazing
- 20:32Speaker 1: because you could at that level, you could just ride
- 20:35Speaker 1: the easy train from there on out if you want to.
- 20:38Speaker 1: But she also shows her level of passion and commitment
- 20:41Speaker 1: right completely. That's what I'm saying, Like, it was very cool.
- 20:44Speaker 1: That was Yeah, that was just cool for a different
- 20:47Speaker 1: reason because it was it just kind of showed me like, Okay,
- 20:49Speaker 1: whatever level you're at in this business, keep going. Yeah,
- 20:53Speaker 1: So that was big to me. Not at all. She
- 20:57Speaker 1: was great. Really, I thought she was awesome. I mean,
- 20:59Speaker 1: I know, I know people say things about her, but
- 21:03Speaker 1: you know, I mean she was she was super cool.
- 21:07Speaker 1: She showed up at the studio. This was her and
- 21:10Speaker 1: Nick Cannon walked in. Wait, you didn't put the cheese
- 21:12Speaker 1: on that one girl. I understand. Oh, I just been't
- 21:15Speaker 1: watching to get my my little because I was gonna
- 21:17Speaker 1: say who was wearing the apron, but we're both wearing apron,
- 21:19Speaker 1: so I can't. I can't. So here's the thing. She
- 21:24Speaker 1: showed up at the studio looking like Catwoman. She had it.
- 21:27Speaker 1: She all leather jacket, black leather, black leather pants, black
- 21:31Speaker 1: leather patent shoes. I was like, okay, this woman is
- 21:35Speaker 1: a deep but like she's a star. But she was
- 21:37Speaker 1: so cool. She was cool as the other side of
- 21:39Speaker 1: the pillow the whole time. So I don't know, you know, um,
- 21:44Speaker 1: So that was big. Somebody that like made a big
- 21:48Speaker 1: impact on my life in another way, and and they
- 21:53Speaker 1: know this now because I've told them, is Michael Bolton.
- 21:58Speaker 1: I don't know if you know who that is, but
- 21:59Speaker 1: he was a really big singer in the eighties, huge,
- 22:02Speaker 1: like well, he was the biggest pop vocalist in the eighties.
- 22:06Speaker 1: This guy has unbelievable voice, you know ten number one songs.
- 22:09Speaker 1: He's been a writer on you know, Double that. So anyway,
- 22:14Speaker 1: I grew up in the house hearing Michael Bolton all
- 22:17Speaker 1: the time because this is what my mom loved, Michael Bolton.
- 22:22Speaker 1: So I eventually got a call from someone saying, Michael
- 22:27Speaker 1: Bolton wants to get in with you guys and work
- 22:29Speaker 1: on his new album. And I was like, oh, that's cool,
- 22:31Speaker 1: because like that was kind of nostalgic. But what really
- 22:35Speaker 1: happened was that when Bolton was in with us, I
- 22:38Speaker 1: was like, man, my mom like she hasn't always got
- 22:43Speaker 1: like how I'm going to make it in music, but
- 22:46Speaker 1: she does believe in me big time. But it would
- 22:48Speaker 1: be amazing if I called my mom and put you
- 22:51Speaker 1: on the phone with her. She's the biggest Michael Bolton.
- 22:54Speaker 1: He was like, let's go. So like I called my mom.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, I got Michael Bolton here. She's like
- 22:58Speaker 1: uh huh, So like not for real, Like I'm in
- 23:01Speaker 1: with Michael boll This is crazy. So he gets on
- 23:04Speaker 1: the phone and he's like singing my praises and saying,
- 23:06Speaker 1: how you know, great of a writer I am, And
- 23:08Speaker 1: all this stuff, and I'm like, yeah, Milk keep saying,
- 23:10Speaker 1: tell her I'm even better. So he's milking it. And honestly,
- 23:15Speaker 1: from that day, like my mom got it. She was like, Okay,
- 23:18Speaker 1: I might not have got all the rap stuff he
- 23:20Speaker 1: was doing, but like this is crazy, like my son's
- 23:23Speaker 1: writing with Michael freaking Bolton, and like, I'm a huge fan.
- 23:27Speaker 1: So since that day, she's been such a big supporter,
- 23:30Speaker 1: like hangs my plaques in her house like she's like,
- 23:33Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. And also Michael Bolton gives
- 23:36Speaker 1: my mom tickets to every show he does in California.
- 23:38Speaker 1: She goes backstage like v I P to Michael Bolton.
- 23:41Speaker 1: I'm like, you better cut that out. So, yeah, it's
- 23:45Speaker 1: that's pretty cool. So I don't know, There's there's ways
- 23:48Speaker 1: that you get touched in this business that I think
- 23:51Speaker 1: you can't even anticipate. Sometimes, Yeah, what advice would you
- 23:55Speaker 1: give to someone that's coming up in the game. You
- 23:58Speaker 1: got a baby in there. Don't act like you're excited
- 24:00Speaker 1: about this. Trust me, I'm beyond excited. Okay, Um, what
- 24:05Speaker 1: was your question? Um? Sorry you distracted me. I know
- 24:09Speaker 1: I was food, I was chef is a little bit cocky. Unfortunately,
- 24:13Speaker 1: we're probably gonna wrap soon. So but I wanted to know, like,
- 24:16Speaker 1: what advice would you give to someone that is trying
- 24:19Speaker 1: to make it because you have kind of all these
- 24:21Speaker 1: blessing milestones, But what advice would you give? Um? I
- 24:26Speaker 1: think the best advice I can give, honestly, in the
- 24:28Speaker 1: simplest form, is just every time you have a chance
- 24:32Speaker 1: to get in the room, just kick as much ass
- 24:35Speaker 1: as you can every time. Mhmm. Don't ever think that
- 24:39Speaker 1: you're better than anyone in that room. Just try like
- 24:43Speaker 1: you're auditioning for the team every single time you get
- 24:45Speaker 1: a chance, no matter what stage you're at. Because some
- 24:49Speaker 1: of the best that I've the legends that I've got
- 24:51Speaker 1: a chance to work with, their legends because they do
- 24:54Speaker 1: that every time when they're on the mic or they're
- 24:56Speaker 1: in the room, they are working as hard as they
- 24:59Speaker 1: can three time. So even after you've made it, don't
- 25:02Speaker 1: slack on. What if something's a smaller budget, do you
- 25:05Speaker 1: say give it your all? Or every time you get
- 25:08Speaker 1: the chance, because you never know what's a small you
- 25:10Speaker 1: never know what is going to go on to make it.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I stopped trying to predict what's a hit a long
- 25:15Speaker 1: time ago. People are like, oh, I just wrote a smash.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I just wrote a smash. I'm like, bro, you don't.
- 25:21Speaker 1: First of all, nobody can predict what a hit is
- 25:23Speaker 1: going to be until it happens, so you don't know. Um,
- 25:27Speaker 1: can I just tell you this right here? I'm not
- 25:29Speaker 1: trying to shout out while jack, but this Jack del
- 25:33Speaker 1: Fuego sauce. This changed my life. If you can get
- 25:37Speaker 1: a close up of this right here. If you don't
- 25:39Speaker 1: know what this is, you might as well just go
- 25:41Speaker 1: figure that one out. We're technically not supposed to do that,
- 25:43Speaker 1: but it's okay. Say what you want to say. So
- 25:46Speaker 1: is there a flavor of that sauce? This one right here?
- 25:48Speaker 1: How a narrow carrot? Look? Okay, have a narrow carrot.
- 25:52Speaker 1: I'm glad you actually did that because I'm gonna try
- 25:54Speaker 1: and make this disht I'm trying to tell you this,
- 25:56Speaker 1: how a narrow carrot? Girl? How you pray twice in
- 25:58Speaker 1: the day. So that's the advice I would give. Yeah,
- 26:04Speaker 1: And I noticed with your everything that happened in your career,
- 26:07Speaker 1: I feel like you moved urgently, like you didn't waste time,
- 26:10Speaker 1: you didn't care about you know, is this person I'm
- 26:13Speaker 1: too eager. That's a great point, you know, honestly, the
- 26:16Speaker 1: reason behind that is because you learn early on that
- 26:20Speaker 1: you can't predict what success is going to be in
- 26:22Speaker 1: this business. You don't know what song is gonna work,
- 26:24Speaker 1: you don't know what projects going to sell, So you
- 26:27Speaker 1: can't you can't like bask in your own glory for
- 26:29Speaker 1: too long. You have to just do your best work
- 26:33Speaker 1: weight before you fall. That dude overhead. Can you got
- 26:37Speaker 1: to see that that is crazy right there? This looks
- 26:41Speaker 1: beautiful just like this. So I think, like you just
- 26:44Speaker 1: you never know what's gonna work. So you don't spend
- 26:46Speaker 1: a lot of time thinking you're the ship. Because that
- 26:50Speaker 1: project that you think might be so successful might not be.
- 26:53Speaker 1: And even if it was super successful, the next one
- 26:55Speaker 1: that you get on might flop. So just appreciate your
- 27:01Speaker 1: success and be happy about it, but then keep it moving. Okay,
- 27:05Speaker 1: Now what about and I and I hate to I
- 27:09Speaker 1: still go through this to this day, Like you know,
- 27:11Speaker 1: you're working on a project, even like with eating while broke,
- 27:15Speaker 1: do you think that there's a level of like negative
- 27:17Speaker 1: energy that could affect the outcome? Because I feel like
- 27:21Speaker 1: no matter how far or how many little milestones not
- 27:25Speaker 1: as big as yours um that I've accomplished. I still
- 27:27Speaker 1: get back in my mind think, oh it could fail,
- 27:29Speaker 1: or maybe I'm just in my head thinking it's not
- 27:32Speaker 1: big enough. But do you think that energy affects you know,
- 27:35Speaker 1: like the laws of attraction. Do you think that affects it.
- 27:38Speaker 1: I think that negative energy is it's like complaining about
- 27:43Speaker 1: the size of the moon. It's not gonna do any good.
- 27:46Speaker 1: You can't change it. So I don't spend a lot
- 27:50Speaker 1: of time being negative. Even when I'm working on projects,
- 27:53Speaker 1: I might not be excited about I'm working on the
- 27:55Speaker 1: same because you just don't. I don't know, Like I
- 27:57Speaker 1: don't put it out there honestly, but I'm saying, like
- 27:59Speaker 1: that internal self doubt that you battle it. I always
- 28:02Speaker 1: have internal self doubt every single day. Every day I
- 28:06Speaker 1: have it. Is the song good enough is, you know,
- 28:09Speaker 1: is what I'm am I working hard enough is? You know,
- 28:12Speaker 1: Like I'm always thinking like that, But that is just
- 28:14Speaker 1: what pushes you to keep being great. You know. So
- 28:17Speaker 1: that's a normal you'd say that's like normal. I think
- 28:20Speaker 1: it's completely normal. I think it's part of what makes
- 28:22Speaker 1: people successful is that drive to never think like you've
- 28:26Speaker 1: made it or that everything you do is so good.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Have you ever worked with someone where you know their
- 28:32Speaker 1: album did extremely well, but the whole time they the
- 28:36Speaker 1: artist whatever, was questioning it. Oh my god. Almost every
- 28:41Speaker 1: artist does that, really. Yeah, I mean I think the
- 28:44Speaker 1: great ones always do. They'll know when they've made something
- 28:48Speaker 1: that feels really good to them, but they're always questioning
- 28:50Speaker 1: if the pupp is gonna love it. Yeah, you know,
- 28:53Speaker 1: it doesn't matter. Like I've worked a lot with the
- 28:56Speaker 1: Backstreet Boys, I've had a lot of success with them.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Every time their album drops, they are the most excited
- 29:01Speaker 1: people to go look and see how it does. They're reading,
- 29:04Speaker 1: they're looking through it. Like these guys don't need to
- 29:06Speaker 1: do anything for the rest of their lives. If they
- 29:07Speaker 1: don't want to, that's amazing. But they love it, they
- 29:10Speaker 1: live for it. Yes, So I think that's important to
- 29:13Speaker 1: know to keep in mind. Oh well, this interview has
- 29:18Speaker 1: gone really well, except for the fact that we haven't
- 29:21Speaker 1: actually tasted it yet. What's happening right now? You can't
- 29:24Speaker 1: rush hosting a burrito. I don't know. Somebody lied to
- 29:28Speaker 1: you if they tell you the overhead the whole shoot
- 29:31Speaker 1: should be just on you. You should have a cooking show.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Let's go um oh, the third one if you want,
- 29:38Speaker 1: you could do that after. Yeah, that's fine, let's do
- 29:41Speaker 1: that one after. Yes, we'll keep that for a time. Everybody,
- 29:45Speaker 1: I just hold up. We gotta cut this thing because
- 29:49Speaker 1: if you got to show the inside. Okay, you feel me?
- 29:51Speaker 1: Get this little knife cooking show. You've got this tiny
- 29:53Speaker 1: little knife. Can we get a knife endorsement? Let's get
- 29:59Speaker 1: a knife endorsement of it here, that's all right. Oh
- 30:01Speaker 1: my gosh, it has a crispy shell. That's why you
- 30:03Speaker 1: were trying to rush me. But no, I don't but
- 30:06Speaker 1: I don't cave. Look at that. Let's get it over.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Oh my god, let's get that thing right there. That
- 30:11Speaker 1: looks amazing. My hands burning. So then you just played
- 30:14Speaker 1: it a little bit like this. Okay, so you just
- 30:17Speaker 1: do that, and now what you really want to do
- 30:20Speaker 1: to have a little fun with it every time? A Yeah,
- 30:23Speaker 1: I'm not gonna I'm not gonna blooded like that. I'm
- 30:27Speaker 1: not gonna do you call blooded like that. You get
- 30:29Speaker 1: tell he's a real chef because he's he's turned the
- 30:32Speaker 1: island upside down completely. Okay, Now what you want to do.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Give people a little chance to fall in love with
- 30:41Speaker 1: that taste with the sauce, because they might not choose
- 30:44Speaker 1: to do it themselves. You've gotta urge them. So here
- 30:47Speaker 1: you go. Awesome. Thank you, and that's that awesome, and
- 30:54Speaker 1: thank you so much for coming out. But before we
- 30:57Speaker 1: even close out, I gotta take a bite. You gotta
- 31:00Speaker 1: take a bite. Okay, we gotta judge this meal. We
- 31:02Speaker 1: gotta see if it's actually going to go into my
- 31:05Speaker 1: personal arsenal of meals I make it. I can't have
- 31:09Speaker 1: my man over here, the camera guy try it. I
- 31:12Speaker 1: can't make all this stuff and then have these people.
- 31:13Speaker 1: They'll try it, they'll try it. Okay, all right, let's
- 31:16Speaker 1: go just we just gotta let's do it first. It's
- 31:20Speaker 1: a little hot. Oh my mm hmm. I mean best meal.
- 31:30Speaker 1: I'm just saying best meal. You taught. I'll make sure
- 31:34Speaker 1: you guys all through best meal. Thank you for having
- 31:39Speaker 1: me on this show called Thank you so much. I
- 31:41Speaker 1: love this. By the way, this is so cool. People
- 31:43Speaker 1: are gonna dig this. Thank you and people people. I
- 31:46Speaker 1: hope everyone can really draw a lot. I know I've
- 31:49Speaker 1: always been impressed with your story and the fact that
- 31:52Speaker 1: you're so humble, and the best part is the fact
- 31:55Speaker 1: that you can cook. So I'm always looking for an
- 31:58Speaker 1: invite oversee your house. Who ever, all right, we'll make
- 32:01Speaker 1: it happen again. But best best dish, hands down, best
- 32:05Speaker 1: dish on Eating While Broke, Yeah, so far, thank you
- 32:09Speaker 1: so yeah. I hope someone could top it so then
- 32:11Speaker 1: I can try it and then everybody can get your
- 32:14Speaker 1: recipe in the Eating While Broke cook click and make
- 32:17Speaker 1: it at home. But by far, the best, most amazing
- 32:20Speaker 1: dish ever. Fee, thank you for coming out awesome, Thanks
