- 0:55[SPEAKER_01]: They are presently touring United States, and they're going to take you again through their powerful leadership or leadership message.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: They've brought that message to the US for the past almost a month and we've been following along on social as they make this journey.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: This conversation digs into what real leadership looks like today and why it might be time to rethink how we lead.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_01]: So let's get into it and remember, replace the word change with improvement and you'll go much farther.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: Hope you enjoy this time with Dave.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody Brian Smith here with the I&T series and the daily influence.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: It is day three of day events and he is going to introduce you to something new.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's and leadership and leadership and that's right.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: I did say right.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: SHIT, leadership and leadership and
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: As you know, we all have a lot of shit in our leadership.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: And Dave is actually going to define that better.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_01]: He's written this amazing book that I just got assigned to copy of.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm excited and the team back in the States is going to get their copies.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm not going to talk.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: because when I have guests, I like to like them talk and share their influence and allow you to find a way to bring that into your area of influence.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: So Dave, thanks again, and back to you.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's great to do another episode.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sure the listeners of Ryanford loads about leadership from multiple sources.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: But I'd like to bring to your attention straight out the gate today
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: that mostly the ship principles were invented last century.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: And we very rarely stop to realize that these days, because there's so much going on, it's rehashed multiple times.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: I can think of back throughout my career so far of people that we've been great leaders, depending on context.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: or situations.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: I can also think of leaders.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: I work with it really, won't very nice people, but didn't mean it.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: And what I'd like to share with you in a minute is what leadership is.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: And so you can be clear about what leadership isn't.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: Before I do that, I'd like you to picture this scenario.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: You are working with somebody.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe you're the boss, maybe you're the colleague in this scenario.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: And let's just imagine for a second that you're in a one-to-one together doing what's called a review.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: And you're in a chat and you've got your disagreements, you've got your ideas.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe there's a few gaps in your perspectives.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: But let's say you conclude the review.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: You've both done some polite, perfunctory agreements where you've agreed, but you didn't mean it.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: And then they leave the boss leaves the meeting room and goes off to do their next thing.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: You leave and then you tell somebody about the review you just had.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe your energy is five out of ten where ten is supersonic.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: And you don't realize it at the time, but you're complaining a little bit by your sound about that you didn't really get much out of that meeting.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: That meeting I've just described to you is more common in most companies around the world today.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: And let's be clear, it's leadership.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: Both parties weren't engaged in that hour.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: We were still.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: If we were to calculate how much of that hour cost, imagine it was an hour, it would have been a very expensive item.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: And for the same money, you could have gone on board yourself, some really lovely from the shop.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: Or anywhere online and got much more pleasure out of it.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: And if you need any tips for that, I got loads.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: But let's clarify what leadership is, right?
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: That's the point of this one today.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: Leadership is modeling the leadership required of our time.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: Regardless of the consequences, that means I'll give you a real current challenge in subject.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: not covering up.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: Now I only learned the detail about covering up recently at a conference where somebody announced themselves live on stage and they introduced themselves for the first time in their life as Alex.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: And Alex educated all of us in the audience about what covering up is where maybe there's a discriminative comment in a meeting room that's not meant but is offensive and then somebody who's offended doesn't say anything and then somebody else notices that someone was offensive and doesn't say anything that's covering up.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: That's not modeling the leadership required of our time.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's standing up for things when it matters.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's modeling the things that the math things that matter all of the time.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: In our leadership principles that we also teach in our coaching business and our coaching.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: And we talk about modeling the leadership required of others tomorrow.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: You're self first.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: That means you go first.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's not clean the toilets go first.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's not doing things because nobody else does.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's not setting an example in the old way from the seventies.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's actually deciding I'm going to ask people to improve tomorrow.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to show you that I went there first myself.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to show them.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: I learned even though it's hard.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: But with leadership two point know, there are three things you can practically do and I'm going to quickly share them with you as to what they are and how you can do them.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: The first thing is model the leadership required of your time regardless of the consequences.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's easy to do that when you know the following things.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: One, what are your personal values?
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: What guides you as a compass in your life?
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: Stop it and think about maybe previous episodes of the podcast that maybe talked about these kind of things before.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: Going on the IA site and finding other tools, downloading books, listening to audible.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_00]: All kinds of things you can do to discover what your personal values are.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: But when you know what they are, it's easier to live them.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: When you know what your values are, it's easier to then model the leadership required because you know who you are and what makes you who you are.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: Second thing.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: get good at being straight target.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: Realize a constructive conversation with someone where you're basing on grace and truth.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: is useful to anyone and it's two ways.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: The moment you ask somebody for some constructive candor, you should be both partaking in the conversation.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: It should never be one way.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Use the third part.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: This one's my favorite and it's the most difficult.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to upgrade your leadership today and take one action from this short episode,
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: All you've got to do is start practicing asking the people you lead.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: How do I change to help you get better?
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: or how do I change to help you fulfill your dreams?
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: How do I change to make your job more fulfilling?
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: How do I change to help you excel in any area of your life or business?
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: Now, you might think those are really broad, massive questions.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: And by the way, they are.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: And John Maxwell would say, if you ask someone to tell you what their dreams are and they don't tell you, the lesson should explain itself.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: Means you don't have enough rapport yet, you don't have enough
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: influence.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: But let's just stop one last time.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: If you can learn to ask somebody, how do you change?
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: How open do you think they might be when they then see you change?
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: Feel the difference in your leadership because you did change and notice other people talking about the change that you made when you ask them to make a small evolution, to make an improvement rather than a change.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: How more open do you think they will be?
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: when they've seen you doing it first.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: This is about a new type of leadership that's not from last century.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: This is about putting other people first and asking them about it.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: This is more than giving a damn.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: This is modeling the leadership that our world needs today and doing it regardless of the consequences.
