- 1:23Speaker 3: We're gonna talk to Clay and Bear Newcombe about some
- 1:26Speaker 3: exciting developments in the Bear Grease universe. We've got I
- 1:30Speaker 3: reused the word excited. We've got some exciting announcements coming
- 1:32Speaker 3: at the end of the show, but mostly we'll just
- 1:35Speaker 3: enjoy time spent in the company of friends and savor
- 1:38Speaker 3: our time with you, loyal Radio Live audience.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Welcome. Seth Giannest. How you boys doing today?
- 1:46Speaker 1: Fantastic? Yeah, I'm doing great now that you set us
- 1:50Speaker 1: up for the next hour. That way, just getting to
- 1:53Speaker 1: hang out.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Yeah, our buddies, I mean, that's that's what it's all about, right,
- 1:57Speaker 3: that's casting, as we call them. The is just podcasting,
- 2:02Speaker 3: just podding. Yeah, cold here in Bozeman today.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Oh what a shine to the system this morning? When
- 2:07Speaker 4: I went out to start my truck. Yeah, it was
- 2:10Speaker 4: so cold my radio wouldn't work it started. Oh, you
- 2:13Speaker 4: have some electrical problems apparently.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Geez.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that thing really has been a lemon. Huh, it
- 2:18Speaker 1: has been. I'm sorry for you.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Thankfully Ford doesn't sponsor this program, Seth.
- 2:26Speaker 2: How's your weekend?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Where I got it? Did weekends great? Uh.
- 2:33Speaker 4: I did a lot of hiking around this weekend, which
- 2:35Speaker 4: they don't usually do. Very nice, which was nice, just
- 2:37Speaker 4: to get out. Yeah, it's kind of it's it's like
- 2:40Speaker 4: a weird this winter has been weird. And I've said
- 2:42Speaker 4: this a bunch of times before, but there's like bad
- 2:45Speaker 4: ice everywhere, but not like really open water. So the
- 2:52Speaker 4: fishing program has been you know Jones. Yeah, Yeah, I'm Jones,
- 2:57Speaker 4: and yeah, I been consuming a lot of fishing content
- 3:00Speaker 4: you have.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 3:01Speaker 3: He was just telling me this morning about some some
- 3:04Speaker 3: updates in the bass fishing world.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Oh yeah, well that's not an update. That's just like
- 3:08Speaker 1: a it's just a fun little tidbit.
- 3:10Speaker 2: For those of us who don't follow. It was quite
- 3:12Speaker 2: an update. Shock.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Really, I think you're gonna have to give us some
- 3:16Speaker 1: info now that you guys brought this up.
- 3:18Speaker 4: I was showing Randall Lucas Black. He's a he's an actor.
- 3:21Speaker 4: You know this guy.
- 3:22Speaker 5: Phil never heard of him. He was on Fast and Furious.
- 3:26Speaker 5: That's why I have bade. Yeah, I'm looking him up
- 3:29Speaker 5: right now.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Anyway, I could have sworn he was in the Skulls.
- 3:32Speaker 4: He's like a professional Joshua chairman angler now really yeah,
- 3:37Speaker 4: good for him, and he's fishing right now in a tournament.
- 3:40Speaker 5: Oh, he's on the n CIS show. Yeah, n CIS.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Yeah, he was in Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift it's interesting. Yeah,
- 3:48Speaker 3: well I thought I thought that was fascinating.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yeah, Randall, what's uh, We're not that interesting. What's going
- 3:53Speaker 1: on with you? Tell us something interesting?
- 3:54Speaker 3: Well, I thought you were going to tell us a
- 3:56Speaker 3: little bit about your weekend last week, and you were
- 3:58Speaker 3: with all the oh dowtf. Yeah, a little bit of
- 4:02Speaker 3: fomo you had fomo, Yeah, I had fomo.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Yeah, from from.
- 4:08Speaker 1: The Turkey Convention. Yeah. It's one of my favorite things ever.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Turkey's Turkey on. Yeah. It's just it's a lot, man,
- 4:15Speaker 1: It's a big place with a lot of people. It's
- 4:18Speaker 1: great to see the enthusiasm right of all all these
- 4:22Speaker 1: Turkey fans. We helped MC host the Grand Slam after
- 4:27Speaker 1: party on Friday night and helped raise a bunch of
- 4:30Speaker 1: money for NWTF, sell some raffle tickets that went good.
- 4:35Speaker 1: We told some stories, played some trivia, had a hoot
- 4:40Speaker 1: owl contest, which you know, you would think you're an
- 4:44Speaker 1: NWTF like it would just be no problem to find
- 4:48Speaker 1: just twenty of them that sound just like a damn owl.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Really sad, I don't know if we're just somehow we're
- 4:56Speaker 1: still looking in the wrong places where we're not getting
- 4:58Speaker 1: the word out that or it's only Clay and I
- 5:03Speaker 1: that actually appreciate someone that can actually do a good
- 5:06Speaker 1: voice awl cal Well.
- 5:07Speaker 3: I also feel like in the past we've we feel
- 5:12Speaker 3: like we've heard good ow you know, it's always the
- 5:14Speaker 3: last place where we heard some good ones. Or last
- 5:16Speaker 3: year we heard some good ones and maybe we're just.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Did you hear a couple three good ones? And we
- 5:21Speaker 1: had that at the at the convention too. But again
- 5:24Speaker 1: we were thinking that like, oh my god, it's gonna
- 5:26Speaker 1: be very tough to vet this crowd to get eight
- 5:28Speaker 1: of them to get come on stage, because we're going
- 5:30Speaker 1: to have fifty good ones. Yeah, it wasn't the case.
- 5:33Speaker 1: The next day we hung out in the booth for
- 5:35Speaker 1: about six hours and it actually wasn't too bad. But
- 5:40Speaker 1: and that's my favorite part because you just talk to
- 5:42Speaker 1: fans coming through and it's good to get the one
- 5:45Speaker 1: on one feedback, you know, and hear what they appreciate
- 5:49Speaker 1: about what we do. M H. So yeah, I got
- 5:52Speaker 1: this fancy hat here.
- 5:53Speaker 3: It looks goods Oh it's an nw that's a Turkey
- 5:56Speaker 3: feather m H.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Fascinating Turkey.
- 6:00Speaker 1: The first light NWTF collab with. I can't remember how
- 6:03Speaker 1: much of the proceeds go to NWTF. But a bunch.
- 6:06Speaker 1: So if you want to support turkeys and you like
- 6:07Speaker 1: the hat, there, you go very cool.
- 6:09Speaker 3: And set's wearing a custom made hat. Yeah, show it
- 6:14Speaker 3: to the camera, would you please.
- 6:15Speaker 1: You can't buy it anywhere. You can't wear that one
- 6:18Speaker 1: unless you offer me money and I can sell it
- 6:21Speaker 1: to you or not.
- 6:23Speaker 3: You can't buy Redman Tournament Trail Bass Fishing Tournament patch
- 6:27Speaker 3: on it.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Old school.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Yeah, there is no red Man anymore.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Nope, it's America's best. But back in the day, red
- 6:33Speaker 4: Man used to sponsor.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Oh they changed the name.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah, changed understandably. Understandably. Well, ye, honest, since you asked
- 6:45Speaker 2: about my weekend, I'll tell you.
- 6:47Speaker 3: A little bit about my weekend. You did that before
- 6:50Speaker 3: I asked you about your weekend. On on Thursday, Steve
- 6:54Speaker 3: and I went to Cody and we went to the
- 6:57Speaker 3: Cody Firearms Museum. Shout out to Danny and Emma there.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Gave us a little tour, saw some super cool stuff.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I think they run the joint. Uh.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Danny is the curator of the firearms collection, and then
- 7:09Speaker 3: Emma is from their marketing team. And we got to
- 7:14Speaker 3: hold guns, one of which was owned by Oliveryt and Johnson,
- 7:19Speaker 3: the inspiration for Jeremiah Johnson, and then the other one,
- 7:22Speaker 3: the Provedance, is a little more cloudy, but allegedly belonged
- 7:28Speaker 3: to one Jed Smith. So some real mountain man heavy
- 7:33Speaker 3: hitters there.
- 7:34Speaker 1: That place is so impressive. I was there last winter.
- 7:37Speaker 2: I think it's cool.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I think you said they had six thousand firearms in
- 7:42Speaker 3: the collection or on display one of the two, and
- 7:45Speaker 3: that they have drawers you can just pull out drawers
- 7:50Speaker 3: full of guns.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and my.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Favorite part was they have when you walk in, they
- 7:56Speaker 3: have because it's it's made. The museum is geared both
- 8:00Speaker 3: towards weirdos like myself and towards just general, you know,
- 8:04Speaker 3: tourists who don't have experience with guns, so it explains
- 8:06Speaker 3: like bolt action, pump action, whatever else. And there's a
- 8:10Speaker 3: bolt action that is the most probably one of the
- 8:15Speaker 3: most cycled bolt actions in the world. It's literally falling
- 8:19Speaker 3: apart because it's probably got a million cycles on it
- 8:22Speaker 3: from every kid that walks in there and does it
- 8:24Speaker 3: thirty times as fast as they can. Yeah, it's pretty
- 8:27Speaker 3: weird to see what happens when you just wear one
- 8:29Speaker 3: of those things out that's cool. Afterwards, Steve and I
- 8:32Speaker 3: gave a talk about the mountain men at the Cody
- 8:36Speaker 3: Culture Club invited us down and one Jim Zumbo was
- 8:39Speaker 3: in attendance. Local Jim Zumbo, lovely man. It's nice to
- 8:44Speaker 3: meet a living legend. And then I went to the
- 8:45Speaker 3: Hunt Expo in Salt Lake.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Again.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I got to see a lot of the folks there
- 8:52Speaker 3: that tune in, and it's always nice to meet people
- 8:55Speaker 3: that appreciate the weird stuff that I do and that
- 8:59Speaker 3: we do together. Shout out to Kaid Loyal Media to
- 9:03Speaker 3: Radio Live listener with whom I shared a multi beverage.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I wonder if he's listening.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Oh, I think he is. I'm guessing he is. Good guy,
- 9:11Speaker 3: good guy. Competitive rim fire shooter. Oh, which interests me
- 9:15Speaker 3: to no end.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I've been doing some competitive shooting lately. I meant to
- 9:21Speaker 1: talk about this, I think last week excuse me shooting
- 9:26Speaker 1: bows and arrows. Oh yeah, I'm shooting my first ever
- 9:29Speaker 1: league and I encourage everybody. Like. The worst part about
- 9:33Speaker 1: it is realizing how much fun it is and then
- 9:36Speaker 1: realizing that I haven't done it for the last forty
- 9:38Speaker 1: years like I should have been maybe or maybe not
- 9:41Speaker 1: i'd be a better shooter. I don't know, but I.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Definitely feel that way about video games.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I've definitely missed out on a lot of fun. Yeah,
- 9:49Speaker 1: you know, and but no, it's also fun to shoot well.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And I didn't know how well I was shooting. But
- 9:58Speaker 1: my buddy Jeremy, you know, I love Jeremy, but we've
- 10:02Speaker 1: been there's a little bit of a gentleman's scoring going
- 10:05Speaker 1: on a little bit, and so where the eight ring
- 10:10Speaker 1: and the insert outline are oftentimes can be kind of blurry.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Sometimes if it's a really big insert, it's very clear,
- 10:17Speaker 1: but other times it's close. And sometimes if it's just
- 10:22Speaker 1: in the insert, we were like, oh, yeah, that's an eight.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Outside of the insert, it's a five. Well, no, you
- 10:28Speaker 1: got to be within the eight ring or touching the
- 10:30Speaker 1: eight ring to get an eight. So I felt like,
- 10:33Speaker 1: I don't really care because I'm just like, I'm there
- 10:35Speaker 1: to have fun, stretch the string, keep my bow muscles active. Well.
- 10:41Speaker 1: As soon as you see your name on the leaderboard
- 10:44Speaker 1: and you're like top ten, then there's going to be scrutiny, right,
- 10:49Speaker 1: and so you can't be like, oh, yeah, we have
- 10:51Speaker 1: this gentleman's scoring, and I you know what I mean.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So I called the shop and I said, look, you
- 10:57Speaker 1: guys got to knock off fifteen points off my square
- 11:00Speaker 1: because I think on average we've probably at least been
- 11:02Speaker 1: doing that once around. Now, good for you with pure
- 11:09Speaker 1: honest scoring. Last night, I still shot my best.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Round ever, nicely done.
- 11:14Speaker 1: So I'm stoked. And like I said, I encourage everybody
- 11:17Speaker 1: to do an archery league. Man, it's just super fun.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Stretching the string is what is that like burning some
- 11:23Speaker 3: powder in the archery world.
- 11:24Speaker 1: I guess I don't know where I came up with that.
- 11:27Speaker 2: I like it.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Yeah, but I've never heard that before.
- 11:30Speaker 2: You should make a T shirt this is stretched the string.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna think about that for a day or two,
- 11:36Speaker 1: but yeah.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I love it.
- 11:37Speaker 1: You love it?
- 11:38Speaker 2: Okay, very marketable. You're done. We're done.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I mean, I can talk about an archery club for forever.
- 11:45Speaker 2: No, let's talk to it. Let's talk to my friends.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Scott here.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm interested to hear about what s guy has
- 11:49Speaker 1: to say about the American Prairie.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Our first guest today is Scott Heidebrink, Director of Landscape
- 11:55Speaker 3: Stewardship at American Prairie. Scott welcome to the show.
- 12:01Speaker 6: Hey, thanks for having me.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Appreciate it, Scott. Some of our listeners may have seen
- 12:06Speaker 3: a story about a recent federal land management decision involving
- 12:10Speaker 3: American Prairie. Can you give us the basics who American
- 12:14Speaker 3: Prairie is, what you're trying to do, and why you've
- 12:17Speaker 3: been in the news lately.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Sure.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Yeah, we're a nonprofit organization. We with a goal of
- 12:27Speaker 6: seeing a fully functioning ecosystem prairie ecosystem here in Montana.
- 12:32Speaker 6: So that's kind of three pillars for US land, wildlife,
- 12:35Speaker 6: and people, and so focusing on habitat, the animals that
- 12:39Speaker 6: use that habitat, and the people that come to see
- 12:42Speaker 6: or utilize those animals on the landscape. And yeah, like
- 12:46Speaker 6: you said, why we're why we've been in the news
- 12:48Speaker 6: is that the Bureau of Land Management and the Secretary
- 12:53Speaker 6: of the Interior have have changed or may day per
- 13:00Speaker 6: posed decision to cancel our bison grazing leases which have
- 13:04Speaker 6: been in place for some of them for up for
- 13:06Speaker 6: twenty years, and to convert them back to cattle leases.
- 13:12Speaker 2: So that's the that's the short story there, gotcha.
- 13:15Speaker 3: So for those who who are unfamiliar with how this
- 13:17Speaker 3: stuff works. Can you explain what it means to have
- 13:20Speaker 3: a BLM grazing lease and uh, how these leases factor
- 13:26Speaker 3: into your bison program, because that's that's what you guys
- 13:28Speaker 3: are really known for in a lot of ways. I
- 13:30Speaker 3: think when people think American Prairie, they think bison.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:35Speaker 6: Sure, So with with the BLM here in the West,
- 13:39Speaker 6: where you have these public lands, they're they're often interspersed
- 13:43Speaker 6: with private lands. And how the grazing system was set
- 13:47Speaker 6: up is that when you purchase a piece of deeded property,
- 13:52Speaker 6: you have the opportunity to have grazing privileges on neighboring
- 13:56Speaker 6: allotments or on these federal lands. And so when you
- 14:01Speaker 6: purchase these properties, you have the first shot at leasing
- 14:04Speaker 6: those lands. And so when we buy property at American Prairie,
- 14:07Speaker 6: we also retain those leases that go with them, and
- 14:12Speaker 6: that's integraling into our bison program. About two thirds of
- 14:16Speaker 6: our acres that we have bison on our BLM acres,
- 14:20Speaker 6: and so that's how we've been able to grow our
- 14:23Speaker 6: herds over the past twenty years, from sixteen animals in
- 14:27Speaker 6: two thousand and five to the nine hundred and forty
- 14:31Speaker 6: that we have right now, gotcha.
- 14:33Speaker 3: And just so you've got nine hundred and forty. Now
- 14:36Speaker 3: I'm kind of skipping ahead a little bit, but you
- 14:38Speaker 3: guys also have cattle grazing on American prairie lands. Can
- 14:43Speaker 3: you give folks because you hear a lot of times
- 14:45Speaker 3: like they want to replace all the cattle with buffalo.
- 14:47Speaker 3: That's sort of what some of the critics would say
- 14:50Speaker 3: about your organization. Can you give us some of the
- 14:52Speaker 3: statistics about cattle versus buffalo on your property? We're on
- 14:56Speaker 3: your and your leases as well.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Yeah, we have so.
- 15:01Speaker 6: Yeah, in addition to the two properties that have bison on,
- 15:04Speaker 6: we have thirty six lesses across the other over five
- 15:10Speaker 6: hundred thousand acres that we manage. That we have about
- 15:14Speaker 6: eighty two hundred cattle right now that are grazing on
- 15:17Speaker 6: these other allotments that we don't have bison on.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Gotcha.
- 15:21Speaker 3: So bison are just a fraction of the overall grazing
- 15:25Speaker 3: that happens on American prairie right.
- 15:28Speaker 6: Yeah, we can figure roughly like ten percent of the
- 15:30Speaker 6: land base and ten percent of the animals.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Gotcha.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Now, the BLM's justification for revoking these leases centers on
- 15:39Speaker 3: the argument that bison aren't livestock because they're not managed
- 15:44Speaker 3: for production, and those are the words that they are using.
- 15:48Speaker 3: How do you explain that legal interpretation and does it
- 15:51Speaker 3: accurately reflect how you guys think of that that bison heard?
- 15:57Speaker 5: Uh?
- 15:57Speaker 6: No, it does not accurately reflect that. So, yeah, we
- 16:00Speaker 6: we have always been classified as livestock in Montana. That's
- 16:05Speaker 6: the only classification we have for bison. And so over
- 16:09Speaker 6: the past twenty years that we've owned bison, we've been
- 16:12Speaker 6: operating under the Taylor Grazing Act. At no point has
- 16:16Speaker 6: anyone told us we were not in compliance with the Act.
- 16:20Speaker 6: And so, you know, when I look at our herd,
- 16:24Speaker 6: we do we do manage differently. We manage you know,
- 16:28Speaker 6: for even our natural sex ratios and natural herd demographics
- 16:32Speaker 6: and things like that where we are a little different.
- 16:35Speaker 6: But at the end of the day, we are still
- 16:37Speaker 6: running in operation where we are producing animals on the landscape.
- 16:42Speaker 6: We've produced about twenty We've grown twenty one hundred bison
- 16:45Speaker 6: that American prairie over our first twenty years, and forty
- 16:49Speaker 6: eight percent of those animals we're either field harvested or
- 16:53Speaker 6: shipped to other herds for genetics or to grow or
- 16:57Speaker 6: supplement other herds. So although we do it a little
- 17:00Speaker 6: differently and our management is a little different, you know,
- 17:03Speaker 6: we are we are producing, we are shipping out animals,
- 17:06Speaker 6: we are harvesting those animals.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Yeah, and I would like to point out, just as
- 17:11Speaker 3: sort of a for my own sake, it's a bit
- 17:14Speaker 3: of a brag. I have one of those animals in
- 17:16Speaker 3: my freezer thanks to my wife's opportunity a couple of
- 17:19Speaker 3: years ago. And yeah, it's we killed that on BLM
- 17:24Speaker 3: land on one of your leases. So that's to give
- 17:26Speaker 3: folks a picture of what this looks like in the field,
- 17:28Speaker 3: Like we were on BLM ground on on X when
- 17:32Speaker 3: we when we shot that buffalo, Scott. There there are
- 17:36Speaker 3: other there are other people grazing bison on BLM lands
- 17:43Speaker 3: across the west. The BLM is acknowledged in twenty twenty
- 17:46Speaker 3: two that Colorado, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming,
- 17:51Speaker 3: they all have federally administered leases where bison grays. How
- 17:56Speaker 3: can you reconcile that, or how can they reconcile that
- 17:59Speaker 3: with its current position regarding American prairie.
- 18:05Speaker 6: Yeah, so I think there's there's a couple of things there.
- 18:08Speaker 6: We're looking you know there the facts that are being
- 18:12Speaker 6: used to make this proposed decision are not based on
- 18:17Speaker 6: what's actually happening on the ground. They're based on a
- 18:19Speaker 6: few very vague or old quotes or documents that are
- 18:26Speaker 6: being used to define our management. And so with that,
- 18:32Speaker 6: I think, you know, I've I've been grazing bison for
- 18:35Speaker 6: ten years now.
- 18:37Speaker 1: We we don't.
- 18:40Speaker 6: We have never been told that we were not in
- 18:42Speaker 6: compliance with this, and so it's kind of out of
- 18:44Speaker 6: left field for us. And we feel like we're being
- 18:46Speaker 6: targeted here for our specific management, even though we are
- 18:50Speaker 6: producing something something on the landscape here, which is all
- 18:53Speaker 6: those bison.
- 18:54Speaker 1: And so.
- 18:56Speaker 6: I think the BLM is making an effort to not
- 18:59Speaker 6: impact others, but at the end of the day, it
- 19:01Speaker 6: is targeting, targeting us for our different kind of management.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think we would be remiss if we
- 19:10Speaker 3: didn't acknowledge that there is controversy that bubbles up whenever
- 19:15Speaker 3: American Prairie is mentioned. Your organization has critics that argue
- 19:20Speaker 3: that it's a it's a threat to the livelihood of
- 19:24Speaker 3: ranching and ranching communities. We already heard that your operation
- 19:30Speaker 3: is mostly grazing cattle on lands and leases. But I'm
- 19:34Speaker 3: wondering how you guys respond to those critics in terms
- 19:38Speaker 3: of your relationship to the communities around American Prairie.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:44Speaker 6: So, so I'm from a rural community. I totally get
- 19:47Speaker 6: the fear of you know, somebody new coming in a
- 19:50Speaker 6: big landowner changes things like that, and I'm really empathetic
- 19:54Speaker 6: to that. I I understand all of that, and you know,
- 20:00Speaker 6: I would ask people, you know, to look at the
- 20:02Speaker 6: facts and actually what's happening on the ground out there.
- 20:06Speaker 6: You know, with the eighty two hundred cattle, with the
- 20:08Speaker 6: thirty some less eas We have a wild wildlife friendly
- 20:13Speaker 6: land management program for private landowners with twenty one participants
- 20:17Speaker 6: in it, and so, you know, at the end of
- 20:20Speaker 6: the day, I think there is that fear component, but
- 20:23Speaker 6: in practice, we're we're working with a lot of people
- 20:26Speaker 6: on the landscape that have lived there for a really
- 20:28Speaker 6: long time. And I think there are a lot of
- 20:30Speaker 6: other factors outside of American Prairie that are really impacting
- 20:35Speaker 6: the ranching community, like the demographics of the region, or
- 20:39Speaker 6: policy changes at the federal level, things like that that
- 20:42Speaker 6: are that are really hurting the ranching economy in the
- 20:46Speaker 6: ranching community.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Yeah, Scott, I at this point, I think we can
- 20:54Speaker 3: assume you've you've mentioned this as a proposed decision. Can
- 20:59Speaker 3: you tell us a little bit about the next steps.
- 21:01Speaker 3: I assume that there's going to be a challenge to
- 21:02Speaker 3: this in the courts, and I've seen that some other
- 21:06Speaker 3: groups have spoken up on American Prairie's behalf. Can you
- 21:08Speaker 3: tell us a little bit about, like what the road
- 21:10Speaker 3: looks like ahead of you.
- 21:14Speaker 6: Yeah, So we're in this protest period right now. Well,
- 21:17Speaker 6: the protest period has ended. All the protests have been
- 21:20Speaker 6: turned over, and essentially what that means is that interested
- 21:26Speaker 6: parties are making arguments as to why this is a
- 21:30Speaker 6: valid decision or a not valid decision. And so, yeah,
- 21:35Speaker 6: like you said, American Prairie, we submitted our own protests
- 21:38Speaker 6: because it directly impacts us. But then groups like Western
- 21:41Speaker 6: Watersheds Projects, Tonka Fund, the Coalition of Large Tribe Defenders
- 21:46Speaker 6: of Wildlife have all submitted protests against this proposed decision.
- 21:51Speaker 6: And so at the end of the day, Well, the
- 21:54Speaker 6: BLM will analyze all these protests and they will make
- 21:59Speaker 6: a final decision whether that's to keep the current proposed
- 22:02Speaker 6: decision or something else, or to go back to the
- 22:06Speaker 6: old permit with the bison. There's a wide range of
- 22:10Speaker 6: options there. At the end of the day, this is likely.
- 22:14Speaker 6: There's two paths after the protest period, which are either
- 22:17Speaker 6: Federal Quarter, Administrative Court, and we don't know what route
- 22:21Speaker 6: it's going to take yet, and so either either way,
- 22:25Speaker 6: it will likely head one of those routes.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Though, gotcha, and I mentioned earlier when we when I
- 22:31Speaker 3: was lucky enough to go on my wife's buffalo hunt,
- 22:34Speaker 3: we ended up harvesting that animal on BLM ground. Or
- 22:38Speaker 3: would would your inability to graze buffalo on BLM impact
- 22:44Speaker 3: public hunting opportunities because you guys offer twenty some harvest
- 22:50Speaker 3: opportunities for the public each year.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Is that going to be affected at all if this
- 22:54Speaker 2: goes through.
- 22:56Speaker 6: Yeah, likely will be affected. As of right now, we're
- 22:59Speaker 6: moving forward as normal operations until we know what the
- 23:04Speaker 6: BLM's decision is. One that has made you know the bison.
- 23:09Speaker 6: Two thirds of the acres that the bison are on
- 23:11Speaker 6: our federal land, and so if we have to remove
- 23:14Speaker 6: those bison, we have to move them to other properties
- 23:18Speaker 6: or ship them to other herds, things like that, and
- 23:20Speaker 6: so that will likely impact the harvest program. So, like
- 23:25Speaker 6: you said, twenty to thirty opportunities a year right now
- 23:29Speaker 6: that would likely be reduced or eliminated for a period
- 23:32Speaker 6: of time until we're through all the steps we need
- 23:37Speaker 6: to take with the courts.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Gotcha.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Well, Scott, we're going to keep a close eye on this.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Thanks for coming on the show. And hopefully I'll see
- 23:47Speaker 3: as soon at a fence pull or something like that
- 23:48Speaker 3: somewhere out on the prairie.
- 23:51Speaker 6: Yeah, sounds good. Thanks for having me, guys.
- 23:52Speaker 1: All right, thanks Scott. Thanks Scott.
- 23:56Speaker 2: That's a good dude right there.
- 23:58Speaker 1: I need to remember to put in for that tag
- 24:00Speaker 1: I always forget.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Oh, the coolest, the coolest, one of the coolest things
- 24:04Speaker 3: I've ever done, in terms of just being on a
- 24:06Speaker 3: wild landscape only people hunting.
- 24:09Speaker 2: It just wild animals.
- 24:12Speaker 3: They're you know, they don't they might technically be live stock.
- 24:16Speaker 2: But they don't act like it.
- 24:17Speaker 1: They're spooky.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it's like it's like aneloe punting uh the
- 24:23Speaker 3: week after season opener.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Hm hmm.
- 24:25Speaker 2: That's spooky, super cool, super cool. Our next segment is
- 24:31Speaker 2: Show and Tell.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Manie the show stut.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Manie to show good Good, dance moops.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Spencer brought a rock? What else didn't you we spent?
- 24:53Speaker 2: Oh that's fun.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Our next segment is show and tell, uh seth. Let's
- 24:59Speaker 3: start with with you. What did you bring to show
- 25:02Speaker 3: the classroom today?
- 25:03Speaker 1: I brought a white tail buck?
- 25:09Speaker 4: And this buck the story behind it goes it was
- 25:14Speaker 4: Thanksgiving Day, and no it wasn't Thanksgiving Day.
- 25:19Speaker 1: It was a day before Thanksgiving. I hadn't killed a
- 25:22Speaker 1: deer yet.
- 25:23Speaker 2: And this is twenty twenty two.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Twenty one, oh, twenty twenty one, I haven't written round
- 25:28Speaker 4: the back.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I was driving.
- 25:31Speaker 4: So I planned to go to a deer hunting spot
- 25:36Speaker 4: and just stay there through Thanksgiving for like a you know,
- 25:39Speaker 4: till the end of the season basically. And on my
- 25:44Speaker 4: way there, I left super early in the morning. It
- 25:47Speaker 4: was just cracking daylight. I'm in my in my car
- 25:49Speaker 4: heading to the spot, and I just happened to see
- 25:52Speaker 4: this guy cross the road in front of me and
- 25:57Speaker 4: did the old pull up on X real quick, see
- 25:59Speaker 4: if there's anything look around. Sure enough, he like dropped
- 26:02Speaker 4: down in a drainage that led right to a piece
- 26:05Speaker 4: of state ground.
- 26:06Speaker 1: So I drove up there, parked my vehicle got.
- 26:09Speaker 4: Down in that drainage where it crossed the state ground
- 26:11Speaker 4: and sat there and waited for probably I don't know,
- 26:15Speaker 4: thirty forty minutes.
- 26:15Speaker 1: And here you come. He popped out. Yeah, and then
- 26:19Speaker 1: I killed him.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Nicely done. Let me shoot him with.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Uh six or five creed more, I'll do it. Yeah,
- 26:26Speaker 4: just like four hundred and twenty five yards.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Beautiful.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Oh it's a nice buck.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:31Speaker 4: I cut him up, threw him in the truck, stopped
- 26:33Speaker 4: and got a case of bush light, and then went
- 26:35Speaker 4: to my friends for Thanksgiving.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Beautiful.
- 26:37Speaker 1: We celebrated this buck. I liked it.
- 26:41Speaker 2: He's broken, yeah, fighter, Oh yeah, got some gird.
- 26:45Speaker 4: It would have been you know, a big score if
- 26:48Speaker 4: if he still had those points, you know what I mean?
- 26:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, if you'd grown it. Could you imagine if the.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Other year I got it? What do you think? Two
- 26:59Speaker 1: year old year old? Probably three? My three year old? Yeah?
- 27:04Speaker 4: That that that's a very typical Montana buck.
- 27:07Speaker 3: That reminds me of my idea for a hunting program
- 27:10Speaker 3: that I host called could have been a booner where
- 27:13Speaker 3: I shoot two to three year old animals with a
- 27:15Speaker 3: lot of potential.
- 27:18Speaker 2: How most of my falls work out?
- 27:19Speaker 1: Yep, I'm not going wrong with that?
- 27:21Speaker 3: No, no, no, I love it. I can't help myself. Janny,
- 27:26Speaker 3: do you want to go last?
- 27:27Speaker 1: I don't care. It's up to you. Why don't you
- 27:30Speaker 1: go on?
- 27:30Speaker 2: Don't you go? Do you want me to go?
- 27:32Speaker 1: Okay? I brought in two things. One is this here skull? Mmm?
- 27:40Speaker 1: Spooky you guys getting a good Oh? Yeah, it's the
- 27:45Speaker 1: bear skull. This is the second bear skull, the first bear.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Everybody asks this is your first bear? It kind of
- 27:50Speaker 1: really is, because it's the first bear A hunted. We
- 27:53Speaker 1: had a problem bear in my yard. I've probably told
- 27:55Speaker 1: this story a couple of years ago, and Mingus treat him.
- 27:58Speaker 1: He was eating our chickens. Mingus treat him, and I
- 28:02Speaker 1: was on the phone with the warden and he was like, well,
- 28:06Speaker 1: you can either shoot him right now out of the tree,
- 28:08Speaker 1: or I can come. And they're all shooting out of
- 28:11Speaker 1: the tree or out to get him. But once he's
- 28:12Speaker 1: been eating chickens, he's not going to quit eating chickens.
- 28:15Speaker 1: And it's just that's the how it is. Since then,
- 28:18Speaker 1: we've gotten a super like grizzly bear proof fence that
- 28:22Speaker 1: I've touched it, and I'm telling you you don't want
- 28:25Speaker 1: to touch our electric fence. So we haven't had any
- 28:28Speaker 1: chicken problems since then. So I shot a little baby
- 28:33Speaker 1: bear out of a tree one time, But this is
- 28:34Speaker 1: the first actually hunt. I went to Manitoba last spring
- 28:38Speaker 1: and did my first ever baited black bear hunt with
- 28:42Speaker 1: Craig and Mel McCarthy of North Mountain Adventures. And I
- 28:46Speaker 1: think on the third evening, classic hunt doesn't matter if
- 28:51Speaker 1: it's like spot in stock or baited, right, we hunt
- 28:54Speaker 1: one spot that that day we get pictures of like
- 28:59Speaker 1: two or three good bears at another bait spot, and
- 29:03Speaker 1: we decide to switch locations, so we go to another location.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Sure enough, no big bears show up there, and at
- 29:10Speaker 1: the first spot, this one shows up. So the third
- 29:14Speaker 1: night we go back and he showed up right at
- 29:17Speaker 1: last light. Again, what was cool? A couple things you're
- 29:21Speaker 1: gonna be able to see this, I think next Tuesday
- 29:24Speaker 1: we drop my Manitoba Barry episode. But a couple of
- 29:29Speaker 1: cool things about this hunt is like you're so close
- 29:33Speaker 1: to these bears, or like one afternoon sitting on a
- 29:37Speaker 1: baited hunt, like you get to see more beary activity
- 29:40Speaker 1: and observe more bears than you would in a decade
- 29:42Speaker 1: of doing spot stock hunting in Montana, you know what
- 29:45Speaker 1: I mean, at least in my experience. So just all
- 29:48Speaker 1: the interactions amongst the bears, the crazy sounds that they make,
- 29:54Speaker 1: and then like their ability to figure stuff out, like
- 29:57Speaker 1: they love a beaver carcass for whatever reason we don't
- 30:02Speaker 1: actually know. Craig's got a theory that their mothers teach
- 30:05Speaker 1: them that in the spring, that's your first way to
- 30:08Speaker 1: get easy and meat is sit on a little beaver,
- 30:11Speaker 1: run and snag a beaver and you go, yeah, right, whatever.
- 30:16Speaker 1: We had barrels full of oats and corn soaked and
- 30:22Speaker 1: used fryer oil with a few pastries or birthday sheet
- 30:26Speaker 1: cakes on top. Whatever. If there was a beaver carcass
- 30:29Speaker 1: hanging there, the bears were like, we're gonna get that
- 30:32Speaker 1: thing before we mess around with whatever's in that barrel.
- 30:35Speaker 1: And they can smell it all, you know, I mean,
- 30:37Speaker 1: the bait is doped up with all kinds of fancy
- 30:40Speaker 1: smelling stuff. But they love that beaver carcass and so
- 30:45Speaker 1: like the first day we hung it way too easy
- 30:47Speaker 1: to grab and they just like the first bear goes
- 30:50Speaker 1: in there, takes it down out of the tree and
- 30:52Speaker 1: he goes off into the bush and you can hear
- 30:54Speaker 1: him chewing on it for the next hour. You know,
- 30:56Speaker 1: another bear might go over there and try to take
- 30:58Speaker 1: it from him or whatever. So I'm like, well, we
- 31:00Speaker 1: don't want that, we want to see it. So we
- 31:02Speaker 1: started hanging it. We did like a high line and
- 31:05Speaker 1: then hung it off the middle. But that one didn't
- 31:07Speaker 1: work too good because it was almost just too difficult,
- 31:10Speaker 1: like they would like look and look, try to figure
- 31:13Speaker 1: it out. And maybe it was just the bears, like
- 31:15Speaker 1: the individual bears themselves, because the third night we did it,
- 31:19Speaker 1: we hung one kind of like you'd hang a bag
- 31:21Speaker 1: of food, you know, slung it over a branch, and
- 31:24Speaker 1: then tied it off. Just one bear comes in and
- 31:27Speaker 1: he's determined and he spends an hour. He'd like climbed
- 31:31Speaker 1: every single tree he could climb in the vicinity and
- 31:34Speaker 1: just is like thinking, thinking, thinking, looking, going out on
- 31:37Speaker 1: these little limbs, and I can't go out there. It
- 31:39Speaker 1: comes back and he finally figures out that that yellow
- 31:42Speaker 1: rope when he touches it, the beaver moves right, So
- 31:45Speaker 1: then he starts putting the rope in his mouth and
- 31:47Speaker 1: climbing down the tree, and the beaver's going up and
- 31:50Speaker 1: you get down to the bottom and let it go.
- 31:52Speaker 1: And again I didn't know. I don't know if the
- 31:55Speaker 1: bear knows that. Oh, if I do this enough times,
- 31:58Speaker 1: there's gonna be enough sort of force that something's going
- 32:02Speaker 1: to give and this beaver is going to drop out
- 32:04Speaker 1: of the sky. But can accident that Eventually that happens
- 32:13Speaker 1: and the beaver, just like our little not or whatever,
- 32:15Speaker 1: the new standing hold beaver hit the ground and he
- 32:17Speaker 1: got his So it was just like cool to see
- 32:20Speaker 1: bears doing bear things. And how like Clay's got a
- 32:24Speaker 1: new book coming out. I think it's about a year
- 32:26Speaker 1: out about the American bear and they, according to the
- 32:29Speaker 1: research Clays done, bears are like the most sort of adaptable,
- 32:35Speaker 1: curious animal out there. Like they're the ones that will
- 32:39Speaker 1: sort of see something and more human like right where
- 32:42Speaker 1: you're like, hey, I need to know more.
- 32:43Speaker 2: I need dolphins.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Figure that out.
- 32:46Speaker 2: It likes dolphins.
- 32:48Speaker 1: I like dolphins are pretty cool, very sexual. Yeah, so
- 32:52Speaker 1: this big old boy. The cool thing about this bear
- 32:55Speaker 1: when he finally came in is that there's a lot
- 33:01Speaker 1: of noises around a bait pile or bait you know,
- 33:06Speaker 1: a bait site. I guess, right, there's just like I mean,
- 33:09Speaker 1: at times there was a half a dozen bears and there,
- 33:12Speaker 1: you know, there's a lot of interactions. And anytime there's
- 33:14Speaker 1: a sow with cubs, anytime another bear comes around, the
- 33:17Speaker 1: sow makes the cubs run up the trees. Right, So
- 33:19Speaker 1: it's just like this constant grunting and stuff running through
- 33:22Speaker 1: the brush, chasing each other, cubs going up and down trees.
- 33:27Speaker 1: When this dude got to probably seventy five eighty yards
- 33:30Speaker 1: of the bait, it was like the woods went silent,
- 33:34Speaker 1: like the mom the sow had moved these couple cubs
- 33:38Speaker 1: off of the bait and they were like at the
- 33:40Speaker 1: base of a tree. I don't know if they had
- 33:41Speaker 1: climbed yet, maybe they climbed a little ways, but it
- 33:43Speaker 1: was almost like the birds quit chirping, and it's just
- 33:47Speaker 1: like all you could hear was a little stream trickling
- 33:49Speaker 1: down behind me that was behind us. And he just
- 33:52Speaker 1: walked in just slow, and you know how those boars
- 33:55Speaker 1: do when their you know, toes are kind of pointed
- 33:58Speaker 1: in a little bit and started snaw and around. But
- 34:00Speaker 1: again limited experience for me, I'm like, is that the one,
- 34:04Speaker 1: Like I think it's not the one I can't. I've
- 34:06Speaker 1: been saying to myself that that soal was a really
- 34:09Speaker 1: good sized, good looking bear, and if she had been
- 34:11Speaker 1: in there by herself and no cubs, I've probably been like, oh,
- 34:13Speaker 1: I would shoot that bear. And this bear came in
- 34:16Speaker 1: and he was, you know, another whatever thirty percent bigger
- 34:19Speaker 1: than her. So I'm like, Okay, it's got to be
- 34:21Speaker 1: the right bear. She'd have brought it in a picture
- 34:23Speaker 1: of him. So anyways, Yeah, I got my first real
- 34:26Speaker 1: bear skull here. And then when I'm I'm excited about
- 34:29Speaker 1: the skull, I mean, skulls are always fun. But check
- 34:32Speaker 1: this out. This This is that bear's hide. And I
- 34:37Speaker 1: can't remember exactly. I think we squared him like close
- 34:40Speaker 1: to eight feet. Craig, I wish you were listening. You could,
- 34:45Speaker 1: you could call, you could write in and say, but
- 34:47Speaker 1: I mean, it's just a giant, huge bear, and I'm
- 34:50Speaker 1: gonna use this as an actual rug at my house.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Go ahead and flip her back on their stuff. I'm
- 34:58Speaker 1: not gonna put it on the wall. I'm gonna put
- 35:01Speaker 1: it on the floor. Our fireplace is kind of in
- 35:04Speaker 1: the wrong spot right now, so it's probably not gonna
- 35:05Speaker 1: be in the fireplace. Eventually when I move my woodstove
- 35:08Speaker 1: to a cozy little area, I'll do that. But now
- 35:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna have it like in front of the couch
- 35:12Speaker 1: so you can put your feet on it. I'm gonna
- 35:13Speaker 1: let my dog lay on it because I want to
- 35:15Speaker 1: use it, you know, like it's a comfortable thing to
- 35:19Speaker 1: put your feet on, and.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll be warm, it'll be cool.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I've reached that point with a lot of animal
- 35:27Speaker 3: parts that I'm just like, I don't know, I'm gonna
- 35:30Speaker 3: hang onto this for twenty years in a box.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Somewhere, Yeah, just to look at it.
- 35:34Speaker 3: Yeah, like Sydney's Sydney's bison robe sits on the couch.
- 35:38Speaker 3: The dogs love it, right, and you get to interact
- 35:41Speaker 3: with it every day, Right, you might as.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Well use it. You can always go get it. Well
- 35:44Speaker 1: maybe not always, but for right now, you can go
- 35:46Speaker 1: get another bear hide or another bison robe, you know,
- 35:48Speaker 1: if you get lucky to draw that hunt, and same
- 35:51Speaker 1: thing with these. These are like fun to look at
- 35:53Speaker 1: the skulls. But honestly, I'm gonna do more bear hunts.
- 35:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna do more spot in stock hunts. I'm gonna
- 35:58Speaker 1: do more baited bear hunts the number one reason, I mean,
- 36:04Speaker 1: besides the adventure and enjoying a hunt. But as far
- 36:06Speaker 1: as something to take home, it's bear meat and bear grease. Yep,
- 36:10Speaker 1: Like I love eating bears when you're just like the
- 36:14Speaker 1: last twenty years, I feel like all I've been eating
- 36:16Speaker 1: is super lean venice of different types. And to have
- 36:20Speaker 1: like a freezer full bear meat, it's awesome.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Love it.
- 36:24Speaker 1: So there you go. It's my show and tell.
- 36:27Speaker 3: And before we later we'll explain a bit more about
- 36:31Speaker 3: your film. Yes, and we have some exciting announcements at
- 36:35Speaker 3: the very end of this, so stay tuned. But it's
- 36:38Speaker 3: coming out next week.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I believe on Tuesday, the twenty fourth.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Cool Well, I brought in a I brought in a lion.
- 36:50Speaker 1: Highe No, it's been here the whole time.
- 36:52Speaker 2: It's been sitting in my office. So actually I didn't
- 36:55Speaker 2: bring it in.
- 36:57Speaker 1: You brought it down.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I brought it down.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Oh yeah, let me feel the claws about it. Yeah.
- 37:04Speaker 3: I just think this is one of the cooler, one
- 37:07Speaker 3: of the cooler things I have. It's a tome I
- 37:11Speaker 3: killed a number of years ago when I was living
- 37:14Speaker 3: in Missoula, and it's just a wild, wild animal to like, Yeah,
- 37:21Speaker 3: look at the claws, look at the pads on its feet.
- 37:24Speaker 3: I had it hanging in my garage for a while
- 37:26Speaker 3: while I was butchering it, and just like messing with Like,
- 37:30Speaker 3: it's just an animal that you're not going to get
- 37:33Speaker 3: up close and personal with unless it's sedated, or unless
- 37:38Speaker 3: it's moved on.
- 37:39Speaker 1: To the next world, unless it's mauling you.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Unless it's malling you. Yeah, but speaking of delicious things
- 37:48Speaker 3: to eat, my god. Yeah, yeah, if I could put
- 37:52Speaker 3: a deer, if I had the option of putting a
- 37:54Speaker 3: deer in the freezer or a lion in the freezer
- 37:56Speaker 3: every year, it would probably be the lion.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Just for variety. Yeah, I mean, I'd still be hopefully
- 38:02Speaker 2: killing elk and things like that.
- 38:04Speaker 1: You have some kind of venison, yeah, but.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Yeah, the.
- 38:08Speaker 3: I mean, we we made like a lot of polled
- 38:10Speaker 3: like barbecue sandwiches. Our favorite thing was making pasole with it,
- 38:15Speaker 3: like a Mexican stew where you'd ordinarily get a big
- 38:18Speaker 3: like pork shoulder and chop that up. But just a
- 38:22Speaker 3: super cool animal. It was a cool hunt. The only
- 38:27Speaker 3: animal I've hunted with hounds and that.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Was did you do it? With our buddy Pete, Yeah, Pete.
- 38:33Speaker 3: And then another another his buddies and yeah, we you know,
- 38:37Speaker 3: rode the sleds up and down for service roads. So
- 38:40Speaker 3: we cut a track and then went back, got all
- 38:43Speaker 3: the dogs chased downhill, treed. They actually the dogs split up.
- 38:49Speaker 3: One of them got on another cat's track and treed
- 38:51Speaker 3: that cat. We pulled those dogs off that cat, and
- 38:53Speaker 3: by the time we did that, the other dogs had
- 38:57Speaker 3: this one treed.
- 38:58Speaker 2: And so then we hiked back to the road back
- 39:02Speaker 2: up above.
- 39:02Speaker 3: The road and then shot him with twelve gates or sorry,
- 39:05Speaker 3: twenty gage slug, which was I figured the best thing
- 39:10Speaker 3: I had for like a thirty yard shot. Yeah, and
- 39:14Speaker 3: just super cool. But yeah, like again, the whole process
- 39:18Speaker 3: and the meet in the freezer was really the highlight
- 39:22Speaker 3: for me. Like Sydney was kind of like, this is
- 39:25Speaker 3: what you're doing, and then we got it in the
- 39:27Speaker 3: freezer and she was like, I would like you to.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Do that more.
- 39:30Speaker 1: So that's good.
- 39:32Speaker 2: I feel like that's the optimum outcome for hunt.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's a very well manned species, especially in
- 39:39Speaker 1: our state of Montana, and I mean there's not enough
- 39:43Speaker 1: lions for everybody to have one in their freezer every year,
- 39:45Speaker 1: but a lot of quotas are never met. Yeah, and
- 39:48Speaker 1: that's you know, that's a whole nother thing. The quotas
- 39:51Speaker 1: in our state are a little bit controversial right now,
- 39:54Speaker 1: but like, if you want to try it, there's opportunities
- 39:59Speaker 1: out there, you know. And if you want to be
- 40:01Speaker 1: a person like myself with a hound that wanted to
- 40:03Speaker 1: put one in the freezer every single year, like I
- 40:05Speaker 1: don't see why not. Yeah.
- 40:06Speaker 3: And if if for some reason someone had an allergy
- 40:09Speaker 3: to cat meat, I don't know if that exists or not,
- 40:13Speaker 3: and they ended up getting one and said, hey, does
- 40:15Speaker 3: anyone want this? I would be knocking down their door
- 40:19Speaker 3: to get.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Happy to take it.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, I'm going tomorrow.
- 40:22Speaker 1: We got some snow. Finally, I'm gonna go out and
- 40:25Speaker 1: about dress warm. Maybe I'll get my keep moving. Well,
- 40:29Speaker 1: you don't want to be wearing is I'm gonna be
- 40:30Speaker 1: wearing this thermogrid uh merino top shape right against right
- 40:36Speaker 1: against my skin, underneath my soft shell. That'll be my
- 40:40Speaker 1: kit tomorrow, great piece for active.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Excellent, excellent. Tomorrow's a weekday, right, okay.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I some days I guess a hunt for work Randall,
- 40:51Speaker 1: you knew that.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah, just just you know, just occasionally. Uh, Phil,
- 40:55Speaker 2: what's the chat saying?
- 40:57Speaker 1: The chat?
- 40:57Speaker 2: How are they hanging in there?
- 40:58Speaker 1: Oh? God, Brent Reeves in the chase.
- 41:02Speaker 2: He probably wants he hasn't got enough of the new cooms.
- 41:04Speaker 5: Yeah, he heard, and he came in here to roast him.
- 41:08Speaker 1: I'm sure.
- 41:08Speaker 5: But before we get there, Uh, let's see. Valancourt asks,
- 41:13Speaker 5: when Radio Live ends and it drops to the news segments,
- 41:15Speaker 5: will those do recording? And I recorded in a live
- 41:18Speaker 5: setting with questions comments from the YouTube chat, No, Valancourt,
- 41:21Speaker 5: they will. It will not be a live show.
- 41:23Speaker 3: No, but we recognize that this is a fun dynamic.
- 41:29Speaker 3: So I don't we don't have any concrete plans, but
- 41:33Speaker 3: we will do occasional I don't think we will abandon this.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Randall and I are in the midst of planning a
- 41:38Speaker 1: live tour. We don't know where it's gonna happen in
- 41:42Speaker 1: the United States. But uh so, if you want more live, Randall,
- 41:46Speaker 1: then I just stay tuned and figure out where we're
- 41:48Speaker 1: going to do the next live to it.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Anything can happen anything when you're doing it live.
- 41:53Speaker 5: Yeah, Phil, what you got this is part two part
- 41:57Speaker 5: question from Cranky's verf Part one. Recently tann some baron elkides.
- 42:02Speaker 5: The bear hides turned out fine. The elkhide is pretty
- 42:04Speaker 5: stiff after tanning. Brushing brush on tanning, breaking and oiling
- 42:09Speaker 5: part two when breaking it more after drying the elk
- 42:12Speaker 5: hide cracks on the first side. Any thoughts or tips
- 42:15Speaker 5: on rehydration water salt bath question mark? Would retanning be
- 42:18Speaker 5: necessary after rehydrating?
- 42:22Speaker 2: No clue, I know nothing about.
- 42:24Speaker 5: Oh I thought you guys were prosen here.
- 42:25Speaker 1: No, you need you need to call I'd call it
- 42:28Speaker 1: tax Yeah, call our buddy John Jon Hayes.
- 42:32Speaker 3: Yeah, sorry, we can't help you. The image with this
- 42:37Speaker 3: listener's profile is interesting. Looks like a wizard some sort,
- 42:41Speaker 3: looks like.
- 42:42Speaker 5: A d and d NPCA to me, Ad Rock, he's
- 42:47Speaker 5: here tomorrow the Alaska draw Hunt lottery results come out
- 42:50Speaker 5: for twenty twenty seven. Have any of the gang applied
- 42:53Speaker 5: for anything? He's hoping to score a black Bear tag
- 42:55Speaker 5: from Prince of Wales?
- 42:56Speaker 1: Oh, me too, You and me both, Buddy Randall or
- 43:00Speaker 1: trying to get Prince Walks. I Drew has one in
- 43:04Speaker 1: my pocket. Yeah, I'm gonna be hinding there. This spring.
- 43:07Speaker 1: What's our forthcoming guests? Uh, both Clay and Bear. So
- 43:12Speaker 1: I didn't apply. I don't know if there's I haven't
- 43:16Speaker 1: applied for anything in Alaska.
- 43:18Speaker 2: I put in for that.
- 43:19Speaker 3: I put in for a real uh real low odds
- 43:23Speaker 3: moose hunt, and then I put in for Muskox because
- 43:26Speaker 3: I figure, why not?
- 43:27Speaker 2: Why not let the tag gods smile upon my fate.
- 43:32Speaker 5: On that note, our guy Leland Hart just drew his
- 43:34Speaker 5: very first ELK tag shout out. He's going out this year.
- 43:38Speaker 5: Congrats lad, And I saw that's what he said in
- 43:41Speaker 5: a follow up comment, it's going to be his first
- 43:43Speaker 5: LK hunt.
- 43:44Speaker 3: I saw in the Meat Eater Radio Live Inbox that
- 43:48Speaker 3: McCullough Leland's daughter, whom we wished good luck on her
- 43:52Speaker 3: first hunt, was successful, Yes, in shooting a Havelina out
- 43:58Speaker 3: of a squadron of Havelna's sweet.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Which was the term he used. And I believe that
- 44:02Speaker 2: if that's the technically appropriate term, I love it.
- 44:04Speaker 1: That'd be a good trivia.
- 44:05Speaker 2: He'll hit me.
- 44:06Speaker 5: You guys are very ducky people in here?
- 44:08Speaker 1: Are you not super? But what? But what is it?
- 44:11Speaker 5: It's just someone's just curious you've never shot a duck
- 44:15Speaker 5: or goose with a Jack Miner band or known anyone
- 44:18Speaker 5: who has.
- 44:18Speaker 2: I don't know what that meant.
- 44:19Speaker 1: I don't know what Jack miner. I know what a
- 44:21Speaker 1: band is, but I don't know what a Jack Miner.
- 44:23Speaker 1: I looked it up.
- 44:23Speaker 5: It's a big thing. There's a sanctuary in Canada apparently
- 44:26Speaker 5: that oh like it was banded a Jack Miner. Yeah something.
- 44:31Speaker 5: They're kind of unique in certain ways. But we can
- 44:33Speaker 5: just move past this. Let's see here we go. Mogor
- 44:38Speaker 5: is asking about the new studio. How are things coming along? Well, Mogor, you.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Could probably hear yourself.
- 44:46Speaker 5: I hate doing that, so I will not. But there
- 44:50Speaker 5: are a lot of progress is being made in the
- 44:52Speaker 5: new studio, and in the last week it's gone from
- 44:54Speaker 5: being kind of a cavernous, dusty space to nearly complete.
- 44:58Speaker 5: So I would show pictures, but I kind of just
- 45:01Speaker 5: want you guys to be surprised. It looks pretty good
- 45:03Speaker 5: and I'm excited about it. So that's the update on
- 45:05Speaker 5: the new studio. You'll probably see that in the next
- 45:07Speaker 5: month or two.
- 45:08Speaker 1: On content.
- 45:11Speaker 5: Next question from Will when is Phil going to appear
- 45:13Speaker 5: on ros Well? Will go to the meat Eater YouTube channel,
- 45:16Speaker 5: right now and hit that refresh button.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Right now, right now. The Scotch Egg showed out the Scotch.
- 45:21Speaker 5: Egg Skirmish featuring Corey and Rick.
- 45:25Speaker 1: They are the.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Aged hosted by Giannis Ptellus.
- 45:33Speaker 5: And judged by Randall Williams and myself. I have not
- 45:36Speaker 5: watched it yet, so I don't know how much you
- 45:38Speaker 5: cut out, but I'm sure they cut out a lot.
- 45:39Speaker 3: I'm sure they cut out at least a couple of
- 45:41Speaker 3: rounds of drinks.
- 45:43Speaker 1: We need some views.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Go check it out, Phil, Phil did a little pop
- 45:47Speaker 3: up tiki bar sash unrelated to the dish of the day,
- 45:51Speaker 3: so I.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Thought it worked really well.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a cool fusion of our passions.
- 45:55Speaker 4: Yeah, you should watch it, tell your friends about it,
- 45:59Speaker 4: like and subscribe that like button smash that share it
- 46:02Speaker 4: with everyone.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Boy, I Phil, I want to get more of these questions.
- 46:07Speaker 3: But I am I'm worried that we've kept Clay and
- 46:10Speaker 3: Bear waiting too long.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Oh that's fine, we moved to our second patient. I
- 46:14Speaker 1: go back and I look at the question. So if
- 46:16Speaker 1: you asked a question, I will go back and look
- 46:18Speaker 1: for one. And if you haven't yet asked a question.
- 46:22Speaker 3: Next up on the line, we've got Clay and Bear
- 46:25Speaker 3: Newcombe live from the great state of Arkansas.
- 46:30Speaker 2: Hello, how are you fellas?
- 46:32Speaker 1: Doing it? Good to see it.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Clay, did you get a haircut?
- 46:36Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 46:37Speaker 2: Oh my goodness.
- 46:39Speaker 7: Yeah, it's it's pretty sad for grown man like me
- 46:42Speaker 7: to have hair like this.
- 46:45Speaker 2: No, it's very handsome. You look good.
- 46:49Speaker 3: I was hoping we'd keep this rock and roll party
- 46:52Speaker 3: going for a while, but someone had to be an
- 46:54Speaker 3: adult in the room and.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Chop it off.
- 46:58Speaker 8: Luckily we got Bear here.
- 46:59Speaker 3: That's right, airing on the family legacy.
- 47:02Speaker 1: No, Bear also got too much hair cut off? I heard.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Really yeah, wow, what has gotten into you? Guys?
- 47:12Speaker 4: It's just like some tough weather down there or something
- 47:15Speaker 4: or something in the air. You know.
- 47:19Speaker 8: I couldn't handle the I couldn't handle the pressure.
- 47:23Speaker 7: Everywhere I went, all people wanted to talk about was
- 47:26Speaker 7: my hair. And I'm like, hey, my eyes are down here, guys.
- 47:33Speaker 3: I know the feeling. I know the feeling. Clay, Well,
- 47:36Speaker 3: we're having you guys on. You have some exciting news
- 47:39Speaker 3: to share with the meat eater audience here regarding development
- 47:45Speaker 3: in the Bear Grease universe, as we like to call it.
- 47:47Speaker 3: Can you tell us what's going on in your neck
- 47:50Speaker 3: of the woods.
- 47:51Speaker 8: Yeah, so.
- 47:53Speaker 7: Bear and I have started a number one we've we've
- 47:59Speaker 7: kicked arted a new Bear Grease YouTube channel, and I'll
- 48:03Speaker 7: let Bear talk about it a little bit more in
- 48:05Speaker 7: terms of content, but I'll describe it for you. If
- 48:08Speaker 7: you've been following along with us for very long, you
- 48:11Speaker 7: would have known that I used to run and operate
- 48:14Speaker 7: Bear Hunting Magazine and we started a YouTube channel in
- 48:18Speaker 7: twenty fourteen, back in like it was almost like the
- 48:22Speaker 7: pre history era of the earth, you.
- 48:25Speaker 8: Know, twenty fourteen on YouTube.
- 48:28Speaker 9: And.
- 48:30Speaker 8: We built that channel for eight years.
- 48:31Speaker 7: There was a lot of bear hunting just there's about
- 48:34Speaker 7: seventy or eighty videos on there, all kinds of stuff,
- 48:38Speaker 7: I mean, just all kinds of stuff. And bar Newcomb
- 48:41Speaker 7: is actually on there quite a bit as a little kid.
- 48:45Speaker 7: But when I came to work for Meat Eater, we
- 48:48Speaker 7: quit posting to that Bear Hunting Magazine YouTube channel.
- 48:52Speaker 8: It just lay their dormant.
- 48:54Speaker 7: This year, just in the last two weeks, we've cranked
- 48:58Speaker 7: it back up. We've changed the name to the Bear
- 49:01Speaker 7: Grease YouTube channel, and we're we're lighting the fire again
- 49:08Speaker 7: and Bear Newcomb is going to be the primary host
- 49:12Speaker 7: and Bear tell them kind of what what we're gonna
- 49:14Speaker 7: be putting on there.
- 49:15Speaker 9: Yeah, well it's a different it's a different style content,
- 49:19Speaker 9: a little more informal content, just capturing some of the
- 49:23Speaker 9: adventures that I'm going on, as well as some of
- 49:26Speaker 9: the bow builds and other DIY stuff that I do
- 49:30Speaker 9: a lot. So what you'll see is a little more
- 49:33Speaker 9: informal content. It'll be weekly videos and uh yeah, we've
- 49:38Speaker 9: got We've got a lot of good videos coming out soon.
- 49:42Speaker 7: And we've also started up a bear Grease Instagram channel,
- 49:47Speaker 7: so you got to be so we were posting almost
- 49:52Speaker 7: daily on the Bear Grease Instagram channel. I think it's
- 49:56Speaker 7: called Real bear Grease is what it's called. And uh so, yeah,
- 50:01Speaker 7: it really is exciting. It's been a ton of fun
- 50:04Speaker 7: so far.
- 50:05Speaker 2: No, are we going to see Brent Reeves?
- 50:07Speaker 3: And is it the usual cast of characters on these
- 50:11Speaker 3: on these platforms.
- 50:13Speaker 8: That's a great question.
- 50:16Speaker 7: Like I said, it's it's mainly at this point, you know,
- 50:21Speaker 7: it's mainly Bear. I want to get Brent on here.
- 50:26Speaker 7: He's just so busy down there with that coon dog
- 50:28Speaker 7: his Well, next week we're Brent and I are going
- 50:32Speaker 7: on a on a coon hunt that.
- 50:34Speaker 9: Has a little bit of a twist to it. That
- 50:37Speaker 9: will be on the Bear Grease YouTube channel.
- 50:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Nice, No, that's that's the teaser. Is it just
- 50:42Speaker 1: a twist? You can't give us anything else?
- 50:44Speaker 8: Bear typical coon hunt. I'll put it like that.
- 50:48Speaker 2: I gotta stay tuned, Johnny. That's that's the show biz.
- 50:52Speaker 1: I guess.
- 50:53Speaker 3: So, Clay, are you are you able to share anything
- 50:58Speaker 3: about your your little writing project there? Yeah, man, I
- 51:05Speaker 3: know you just had a big deadline, so I want
- 51:07Speaker 3: to congratulate you.
- 51:09Speaker 8: Thank you so much.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:10Speaker 7: Two weeks ago, February seventh, about roughly two weeks ago,
- 51:15Speaker 7: we turned in the manuscript for my.
- 51:18Speaker 8: Black Bear book.
- 51:19Speaker 7: It's currently titled American Bear, going to come out Spring
- 51:22Speaker 7: of twenty seven, Randall, you'll appreciate this.
- 51:26Speaker 8: It was one hundred and five thousand words. The manuscript
- 51:29Speaker 8: was that'll do it. And just never been.
- 51:35Speaker 7: More excited for anything that I've done in terms of
- 51:38Speaker 7: career and everything. I just feel like it's kind of
- 51:41Speaker 7: a for me. It's just a defining piece of work.
- 51:45Speaker 7: And regardless of if anybody ever even reads it, I'm
- 51:49Speaker 7: it will be excited that it's in existence. And so
- 51:54Speaker 7: Spring of twenty seven. The timelines on these, you know,
- 52:00Speaker 7: book projects are just ridiculous, but it is what it is.
- 52:06Speaker 3: So I think next, I think you were trying to
- 52:09Speaker 3: sell that book back when you and I were bear
- 52:12Speaker 3: hunting on Prince of Wales three years ago.
- 52:15Speaker 7: Maybe, Yeah, we got the contract two and a half
- 52:18Speaker 7: years ago. Well, it'll be three years in August, and
- 52:22Speaker 7: so we've been working on it for two and a
- 52:25Speaker 7: half years and the last year was kind of a
- 52:29Speaker 7: fever pace of work. And that it's been submitted to
- 52:34Speaker 7: the to the publisher, and there's more work to be
- 52:38Speaker 7: done once they get their hands on it and look
- 52:41Speaker 7: at it. But the but the bulk of the work
- 52:43Speaker 7: is done.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you're done pouring your soul into it and bleeding
- 52:47Speaker 2: for it.
- 52:48Speaker 8: That's right.
- 52:49Speaker 7: There's never nobody's ever written a bare book like this.
- 52:54Speaker 7: I mean, I'm not saying that it's there's just there's
- 53:00Speaker 7: there's academic people that understand the history of wildlife trade
- 53:04Speaker 7: and all this. There's people that understand biology. There's people
- 53:09Speaker 7: that understand uh, Native American culture and ceremonialism around animals,
- 53:18Speaker 7: and then there's hunters that have like real life experience
- 53:23Speaker 7: with bears and and there's there would be books and
- 53:28Speaker 7: information in all of those sectors, but this is kind
- 53:32Speaker 7: of a combination of all these things.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Are there any pictures in this book, Clay, I hope
- 53:39Speaker 1: so it's you know, you know, oh is that still
- 53:43Speaker 1: up for debate?
- 53:46Speaker 2: Yeah, anytime, that's up to a higher power.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Oh okay, yeah.
- 53:51Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I would hope there's pictures, but it's it.
- 53:54Speaker 7: If it is, it would be minimal.
- 53:55Speaker 1: You know.
- 53:56Speaker 7: That's just kind of the way books work. I don't
- 54:00Speaker 7: you know, It's like books are big into words.
- 54:02Speaker 1: I hear, okay, I just you know, for me, little
- 54:06Speaker 1: pictures go a long way. You know, when I flip
- 54:09Speaker 1: through and I see a couple of pictures that, you know,
- 54:11Speaker 1: I get I get engaged. Give us a little tidbit.
- 54:15Speaker 1: I mean, you've you've shared a lot of little tidbits
- 54:17Speaker 1: with us about like what you learned about black bears
- 54:21Speaker 1: that you didn't know before starting on this project. What's
- 54:23Speaker 1: something cool you learned about bears you didn't know a
- 54:27Speaker 1: year ago.
- 54:28Speaker 7: That's a good question. It's it's so so big. I mean,
- 54:34Speaker 7: you know the bear grease oil trade. As Randall is
- 54:38Speaker 7: just a national expert on on the deer hide trade
- 54:43Speaker 7: and the buffalo market hunting and all that stuff. You know,
- 54:47Speaker 7: there's a whole giant story about bear grease and bear
- 54:52Speaker 7: market hunting, and and we tell that story, though that's
- 54:57Speaker 7: not the entire book. And you know, basically, the Mississippi
- 55:01Speaker 7: River in between the Appalachian Mountains and the Great Plains
- 55:06Speaker 7: would have just been a bear grease highway, especially in
- 55:11Speaker 7: the latter half of the seventeen hundreds into the early
- 55:15Speaker 7: eighteen hundreds, just a ton of bear grease coming down
- 55:19Speaker 7: coming down that river. And Native Americans heavily involved in
- 55:23Speaker 7: the bear grease oil trade.
- 55:25Speaker 1: What were people do? What were people doing with bear
- 55:27Speaker 1: grease back then?
- 55:30Speaker 7: Well, there was a period of time when animal fat
- 55:33Speaker 7: oils were essential to human life.
- 55:36Speaker 8: I mean they were cooking with it, they were frying.
- 55:38Speaker 7: With it, they were using it as dressings for salads.
- 55:43Speaker 7: That's what a lot of first contact Europeans saw Native
- 55:48Speaker 7: Americans doing in the East was using it on greens like.
- 55:54Speaker 8: No they saw.
- 55:56Speaker 7: The first account of the word bear grease in the
- 55:59Speaker 7: history oracle literature was July fifth, fifteen forty Hernando Desoto's
- 56:04Speaker 7: scribe name Elva. He said he was in what is
- 56:09Speaker 7: now eastern Tennessee, and they came upon a tribe and
- 56:17Speaker 7: they said they noted that they stored large quantities of
- 56:22Speaker 7: what they called bear grease in gourds, and they said
- 56:26Speaker 7: that the Native Americans anointed themselves with it daily, and
- 56:30Speaker 7: they were like using like copious amounts of barreil on
- 56:33Speaker 7: their skin. And that's what Native Americans were doing, the
- 56:35Speaker 7: barre oil market trade. They were using it for food,
- 56:39Speaker 7: but they were also using it for fuel. The first
- 56:42Speaker 7: street lights ever in the world were in New Orleans. Okay,
- 56:47Speaker 7: so just think of the world as being run by firelight,
- 56:51Speaker 7: basically no artificial lights, no electricity. And New Orleans was
- 56:56Speaker 7: such a rough town that these rich neighborhoods said, man
- 57:00Speaker 7: got to have some lights at night on the street,
- 57:04Speaker 7: so these criminals can't just run around. And so they
- 57:08Speaker 7: put oil burning lamps hung out on a little post.
- 57:13Speaker 7: And and they were using pelican oil, bear grease and
- 57:18Speaker 7: whale oil in in in those and it it may
- 57:22Speaker 7: not have been the first in the world, the first
- 57:25Speaker 7: and in North America. The first street lights in America
- 57:28Speaker 7: burned some barre oil, and you know, they were using
- 57:33Speaker 7: it for making soap. Candles. You know, candles were essential
- 57:37Speaker 7: for for light. I mean it's like a light bulb.
- 57:40Speaker 8: I mean like.
- 57:40Speaker 7: Everybody had them, everybody used them, everybody ran through them
- 57:45Speaker 7: and needed more.
- 57:46Speaker 8: And uh, you know.
- 57:47Speaker 7: You mix you know, we make you can make a
- 57:50Speaker 7: candle today or soapy you know, using oil, animal fat
- 57:54Speaker 7: oil as the as the beginning of it, you know,
- 57:58Speaker 7: or as the foundation of it.
- 57:59Speaker 8: So yeah, those are the things that they were doing.
- 58:02Speaker 1: That right there is the reason I'd come to what
- 58:04Speaker 1: I come to Bear Grease for. Yeah. Oh yeah, thank you, Clay. Yeah,
- 58:08Speaker 1: that was great.
- 58:09Speaker 3: Well, guys, lots of exciting stuff on your end of things. Uh,
- 58:14Speaker 3: I think we've kept you a little too long. It's
- 58:16Speaker 3: it's new now where we are Barre. Can you hit
- 58:19Speaker 3: them again with with the YouTube channel and the Instagram

- 58:58Speaker 8: As always, boys, it's twisty.
- 59:02Speaker 10: I'm assuming it's coon hunting naked. All right, we'll have
- 59:07Speaker 10: to see tune in, tune in, take care, Oh, I.
- 59:14Speaker 3: Think just make Clay what's left of Clay's hair stand
- 59:17Speaker 3: straight up on end with that? Alrighty, before we before
- 59:22Speaker 3: we get back to listener feedback, we do have a
- 59:24Speaker 3: couple of exciting announcements. One is that Meat Eater Movie
- 59:28Speaker 3: Club will be returning on next week's episode and we'll
- 59:32Speaker 3: be reviewing by popular demand, Legacy of a White Tailed
- 59:35Speaker 3: Deer Hunter. It's available on Netflix, and uh, it's a
- 59:40Speaker 3: movie I've held off on watching until we were able
- 59:44Speaker 3: to tackle it on radio line.
- 59:46Speaker 1: Yep, okay, yeah, and an interesting film.
- 59:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good way to describe it.
- 59:53Speaker 3: Well, I hope I have I hope I haven't steered
- 59:55Speaker 3: us wrong that it was one of the most highly
- 59:58Speaker 3: requested films in the radio Live inbody.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Well that is because everybody is awaiting how you will
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: tackle it, how you will dissect it. And I'm very
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: in I'll rewatch it just to hear what you have
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: to say about it, because yeah, you're gonna have to
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: think about it.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: I'm coming into it with a blank slate.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Have you watched it yet? Nope?
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: Nope. Maybe this was a big mistake and we'll.
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: Just deliver it because if i'm unless I'm mistaken, it's
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: the same crew that was behind Eastbound and Downe and
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: the Righteous Gemstones and fist Way. So if you like
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: Danny McBride and that sensibility, which I.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: Do very much, Yes, another note on Radio Live here.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: The week after that, we.
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: Will be doing the Meat Eater Radio Live Grand Finale
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: Live Extravaganza. It's going to be very I don't want
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: to give too much weight. It's gonna be very long,
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: so just schedule your day accordingly.
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: It's going to be a unique episode.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: If you have a doctor's appointment, say two or three
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: hours after we start, as long as it's not an
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: urgent condition.
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: Even then, still weigh the pros and cons.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean, just depends on how much
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: you enjoy Radio Live. There will be another announcement for
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: movie clubs, so stay tuned on that because we will
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: have one final movie club and boy, it's I'm salivating.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: I'm real excited for the old Radio Live Grand Finale,
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: Live extravaganza. So we're looking forward to spending a whole
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: bunch of time with you.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: Guys.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: You should post on the on the Instagram a picture
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: of your whiteboard right now.
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: That none did it, already already did that, okay, right
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: before the show this morning?
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: Yea Instagram stories.
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: Yeah, check it out for some teases what to expect.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's all censored, it's all it's mostly redacted.
- 1:01:54Speaker 11: Yeah, which just like political Yeah, and then and then
- 1:02:01Speaker 11: you're honest, why don't you tell us a little bit
- 1:02:03Speaker 11: more about what folks can expect with your bear Hunt
- 1:02:07Speaker 11: and the future?
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Yeah, YouTube, So on me eater YouTube. This year twenty
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: twenty six, we've got a I don't know if you
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: call it a project or just it's really just a
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: different way of approaching our publishing of our sort of finest,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: more interesting adventures from the last year that were planned
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: to be and turned out to be good for a
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: longer form adventure longer form episodes, So they're going to
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: be an hour long and we basically picked twelve of
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: the best from the last year and we're gonna air
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: roughly one a month for the rest of them of
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: the year. In twenty twenty six, the first one that
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: airs Tuesday is going to be My manitoa Bear Hunt.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: I think that My Caribou Adventure Manito was also going
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: to be one of them. Mark's working on a wolf
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: documentary that's going to be one of these episodes. Cal
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: had a grizzly bear episode. Yeah.
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: If you've been following along with the crew over the
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: past year, you might be able to guess. Yeah, sort
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: of what turned into these long form pieces that are
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: called twelve and twenty six.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: Twelve and twenty six, Yeah, that's that's the naming convention here.
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: Yeah, so I would show the slick little graphic, but
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: I don't know if I'm allowed to yet.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Oh do it? Do it?
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: Well?
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: I don't even know where to find it. No, it
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: might be in my email somewhere.
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: But yeah, it's kicking off next week. Everybody here is
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: super excited. It's done a lot of work on our
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: production team and the editors and all that stuff to
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: do these longer form pieces.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: But that's what this is a great time to request this.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: I don't know if we'll do this for every episode,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: but we're going to try it for this upcoming bear episode.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: And these are the right people to ask because they're
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: so good at you know, being part of the live
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: audience here. But uh, put in comments and ask questions
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: about the episode, uh in the comments section on the
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: YouTube channel underneath the video, and then we're gonna aggregate
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: our favorites. And then a week after releases, we're gonna record.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: I think it's gonna be Corey Culkins and I he's
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: gonna ask the questions, I'm gonna answer him, and we're
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: gonna record a video of me answering all of your
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: questions regarding the Bear hunt it and then uh post
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: that on YouTube. Nice please do that.
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: That will a little blurke because they had to take
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: a screen shot, but I think it's slick.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: Oh that's fine work by Phil. Yeah, fine, yeah, Phil,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: this is really good.
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: I'm sure this is the way that the company would
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: like everyone to see. Ye how quickly you brought this up?
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, that was pretty faster.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Not the quality is going, man, if you have just
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: asked me ahead of time, but no, it a.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: Lins me when I'm really tired and uh, everything just
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: starts looking a little blurry.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it's if you're tired.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Or yeah, we're overserved or overserved Yeah by myself.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Yep. Twelve and twenty six.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: That's super exciting.
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: I am Uh, I'm pumped to see all these because
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: it's been a lot of cool You guys obviously did
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: a lot of cool stuff last year.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: And yeah, everybody's always asking for longer twenty minutes form stuff.
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: At twenty minutes, it's hard to capture the ups and
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: downs of a like a real adventure hunt.
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: Yeah, now where you can really let it breathe mm hmmm,
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: which is nice. I prefer that that length.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: I do too, I do too, Phil, What about you?
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: I agree?
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Yeah, should doesn't consume hunting media. That's all I watch?
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: What are you talking about?
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: Ever since I started working here, Yeah, dropped all my
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: other interests.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: He makes it takes up.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: At twelve and twenty six.
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: Keep your eyes peeled next week for that bear video again,
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: Legacy of a White Tail Deer Hunter on Netflix, Mediator
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: Movie Club next week, Meat Eater Radio Live Grand Finale
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: Live Extravaganza two weeks from today, and uh, Phil, what do.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: We have for comments? In the chat here?
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: We've got a few more people, get some more questions.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: In my tummies rumbling, so oh we can just stop
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: the show. No no, no, no, no no no.
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: Was wondering what the what the excitement level is for
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: paddlefish fishing this spring?
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: Mmm, you know, I forgot I think I forgot to
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: put in for the tags. I don't have one here.
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: I forgot to put in for the tag. I hear
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: really good things. Uh, I would love to try it
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: at some point.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: We should put in next year and try to make
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: a I'm not gonna go and and release.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, I want to kill tag.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: Yeaheah yeah, I've I've gotten the snag and release tag
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: before and just didn't have the the heart. I hope
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: you have a paddlefish tag this spring.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: Chase Armstrong five four zero six.
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: Good luck to you, flip Flop Flesher.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: This is from Chase.
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: He asks where do you keep getting the head gear?
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: The vintage Daiwa hat was sweet, but I think the
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: Camo Red Man hat is even better.
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: My buddy made me the Dawa hat and I made
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: the Red Man hat, so you got You know, if
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: you want cool stuff, sometimes you gotta make it yourself.
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: Seth is chomping at the bit. Sorry, go go ahead, Yanni.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Oh, I'm just going to say now that patches on
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: hats are cool. Everybody kind of wishes they hadn't thrown
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: out all those patches that came through their lives in
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: the last twenty years. Yeah, some cool patches out there.
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: Kevin Foodie asks about the buck Hunter video.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: Oh, great question, Kevin.
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: I'm about halfway done. If I get it in time
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: for the Meat Eater Radio Live Grand Finale, Live Extravaganza Live,
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: we will air it there. If it's not quite done
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: and not where I want it to be, because you know,
- 1:07:49Speaker 5: I want.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: To put put a little bit of time.
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: Might have a teaser at least.
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: Oh, we will definitely have. We can put a little
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: teaser up. But it will be in the month of March.
- 1:07:58Speaker 5: I will make that very loose promise if it will
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: be in the spring sometime.
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: I showed a chunk of it to a friend last
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: weekend and he said, I think this is the best
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: thing that you've ever done.
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: That's a let's not set expectations that high, but it
- 1:08:19Speaker 5: should be pretty good.
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: No, no, but and then I said it was Phil
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: that did it. It's not me. I'm just Phil's vessel.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: That's a good way to put it. Uh, let's go ahead.
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: Okay, everyone's mad at me because I'm not choosing this Pa,
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: this Pennsylvania questions. Everyone keeps what I mean mostly Seth
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: Jones is asking when you guys come into PA, preferably
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: East Coast PA.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: For East PA. When I draw one of those ELK tags. Yeah,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: I'll come to PA. That won't be Eastern PA.
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: But don't have any PA trips scheduled, but we see you.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: Seth Jones fourteen to ten.
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I'll be back for you know, Christmas
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: or Thanksgiving or something. See the fan but not.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: Maybe related to introduce the fam to that the baby Verge,
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: Baby Verge. Yeah, fascinating.
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: Nate's asking about media to Radio Live Extravaganza Finale Live Merch.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: Which we didn't even think about. Oh we're fools.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: Yeah, we could probably crank some that real quick.
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll grab some construction baker patch hat.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: We could. We could make old school looking patches.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: Yeah, we should have, like an I was there T shirt?
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Oh I watched it. I watched it.
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: Did miss a segment. I could just say I watched it.
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: Maybe when we have a final, when we have a
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: final run time for the whole thing, we'll just print
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: that on a T shirt.
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: Yeah, and we have no way of knowing if you
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: actually watched it live, and we would still take your money.
