- 0:00Hey guys, it's friendly. Welcome back to In The
- 0:03Stillness. Thanks for joining me on today's
- 0:06episode. Yesterday we closed out with
- 0:09Paul's charge in 2nd Thessalonians 2, Believers to
- 0:13stand firm. And frankly, I have not been
- 0:16able to shake that phrase. It's like the Lord just keeps
- 0:20highlighting it everywhere I go in what I'm doing.
- 0:24And I was praying last night as I was opening up my Bible for
- 0:27dinner and I randomly turn to first Peter 5 verses 8 through 9
- 0:33and it's talking about how the enemy prowls around like a
- 0:37roaring lion, but then it says resist him standing firm in the
- 0:41faith. So notice the terms stand firm.
- 0:45And then this morning I went on a prayer walk before this quiet
- 0:48time, and a man was walking by me on the sidewalk.
- 0:52And also there was like nobody outside.
- 0:55So this man's shirt as he's walking by me, all it says on
- 0:59the front is stand firm. So my mind was just blown and I
- 1:04just knew this is not random. God is clearly underlining
- 1:09something. And I believe it's because
- 1:12beneath our normal routines, our schedules, our daily lives, even
- 1:18our conversations, there is a very real spiritual battle
- 1:22occurring. And if we're not aware of it,
- 1:26it's possible to live casually in a war that is actually so
- 1:30intentional. And it is battling for our
- 1:34minds, our thoughts, and ultimately our hearts and souls.
- 1:39So today, as we read Second Thessalonians, chapter 3 will be
- 1:44in verses one through 5. I want us to really focus in not
- 1:49just to hear Paul's words, but to receive the reminder that
- 1:53this is how we stand for. So with that, let's go ahead and
- 1:58read the passage for today. As for other matters, brothers
- 2:03and sisters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may
- 2:07spread rapidly and be honored just as it was with you.
- 2:12And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil
- 2:15people, for not everyone has faith, but the Lord is faithful
- 2:21and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil. 1 We
- 2:25have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue
- 2:29to do the things we command. May the Lord direct your hearts
- 2:34into God's love and Christ's perseverance.
- 2:39OK, so obviously so much here, but one of the biggest things
- 2:42that stood out to me is the power and priority of prayer.
- 2:48Y'all, Paul is literally one of the strongest, most impactful
- 2:52voices of faith in the early church and even to this day.
- 2:56And he is asking others in a different church to pray for
- 2:59him. That alone should really sober
- 3:03us because we are not meant to quote UN quote minor in prayer
- 3:09and to major and other spiritual disciplines, prayer is
- 3:14essential. It's not just a routine.
- 3:17It is our defense. Scripture calls the Word of God
- 3:22our sword, the sword of truth. That is our offense in the
- 3:26spiritual battle. But prayer is our defense and
- 3:31what keeps us covered. It is our direct, immediate
- 3:34access to God in the middle of the battle.
- 3:38And it's not just a tool. Prayer is a privilege.
- 3:43I want us to sit with that. Do we fully grasp it?
- 3:48Because I think if we did, we would treat it differently.
- 3:53Think about if you're given VIP access to something like front
- 3:58row seats or backstage passes, maybe a special parking pass or
- 4:04a meet and greet with someone important, You would not
- 4:07hesitate to use it. And yet we have been given
- 4:10access to the Creator and Ruler of heaven and earth, and
- 4:16sometimes we treat it like it's an obligation instead of an
- 4:20invitation, instead of a privilege.
- 4:25Now Paul is also teaching us intercede for one another, for
- 4:29brothers and sisters in Christ, because the body of believers,
- 4:34it's meant to grow together in unison.
- 4:38When one person is strengthened and uplifted, it strengthens the
- 4:42whole, just like a physical body.
- 4:45When your core is strong, it's helping support your back as
- 4:50you're walking, as you're going about your everyday.
- 4:52When your knees are strong, your legs are stronger, your whole
- 4:56body moves better. And in the same way, when
- 5:00believers are walking in truth, living out their calling, and
- 5:05growing in the faith, it actually encourages and builds
- 5:09up everyone around them. And Paul doesn't just ask for
- 5:13prayer for protection. He asks that the message of the
- 5:18Lord, the gospel of Jesus, would spread rapidly and that it would
- 5:23be honored. Because it's not just about
- 5:26people hearing the truth. It's about them receiving it,
- 5:30obeying it, and truly living it out.
- 5:34And this part really stood out to me in this passage.
- 5:39Not everyone has faith. That is a lot to take in.
- 5:45I was actually recently talking with a friend about how eye
- 5:49opening it is when you start to ask people what they believe
- 5:54about Christianity or about Jesus, especially if they claim
- 5:58to be saved. Because a lot of people may
- 6:02believe part of the gospel or think that they understand all
- 6:06of it, but they haven't actually received the fullness of it.
- 6:11Guys, cultural Christianity, especially today, is so real.
- 6:17And just because someone says that they know Jesus does not
- 6:21mean that they truly know him all the time.
- 6:26Real faith. It produces fruit.
- 6:29Fruit that is good. It's not just words, it's a
- 6:32transformed life. And like I read yesterday in
- 6:36James one verse 22, it says don't merely listen to the word,
- 6:41but do what it says. So I think this is an invite for
- 6:45all of us to grow more curious, to ask questions, to have true,
- 6:51authentic conversations with people, and to be willing and
- 6:56obedient to share the full gospel that it is by God's grace
- 7:01through faith, not in what we do.
- 7:04It is not because we are good people.
- 7:08There is nothing good in US apart from Jesus.
- 7:12And I think God may want to use you and someone's life in a way
- 7:17that you're not expecting. And so then Paul brings us back
- 7:22to the reality of the spiritual battle.
- 7:27The enemy's attacks are not always loud.
- 7:30They're often subtle. They might show up in thoughts
- 7:33and distractions and influences of people all around us.
- 7:38It could be in what we consume through our music, through our
- 7:41TV shows. And they're designed to slowly
- 7:44pull us away. But Scripture reminds us in
- 7:48first John 44, greater is he who is in you than he who is in the
- 7:54world. So the Spirit of God as a
- 7:57Christian that is living in your heart, in your body, he is far
- 8:04more powerful than the one who is in the world regarding Satan.
- 8:09So we don't live in fear, but we are to stay watchful every
- 8:14single day. When your feet hit the ground as
- 8:17you get out of bed, you are stepping onto a battlefield for
- 8:21your heart and your enemy. He does not want you to submit
- 8:26to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. So This is why prayer matters so
- 8:33much. Because when we pray continually
- 8:37without ceasing, we become more aware, more alert, more
- 8:42anchored. We're not caught off guard.
- 8:45We're actually covered. And I love how this passage ends
- 8:49with such a good reminder that the Lord would direct our hearts
- 8:54into God's love and Christ's endurance.
- 8:58The Passion translation says that God's love is pure, so it's
- 9:03not based on what you do or what you achieve for the Kingdom, but
- 9:08on who you are, what your identity is as his child, as his
- 9:13son, as his daughter, and Christ's endurance.
- 9:18The Passion says it's steadfast, meaning it is unwavering, it's
- 9:23consistent, it's constantly sustaining.
- 9:27Like Galatians 69 says, let us not grow weary and doing good.
- 9:34So this is our charge to keep going, to not grow stagnant, to
- 9:40continue increasing in Christlikeness, knowing that
- 9:44there is always more of God to experience, there is more depth
- 9:48to understand, there's more transformation ahead.
- 9:53So just as the Lord keeps speaking to me, stand firm, not
- 9:59in your own strength, but through prayer, through the
- 10:03truth, and through the one who is faithful to guard and sustain
- 10:08you. Let's close out in prayer.
- 10:13Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of prayer.
- 10:17What a privilege. Thank You that we have direct
- 10:22access to You, that we don't have to work to reach You, but
- 10:26we can come to You freely and confidently and boldly as your
- 10:31children. I pray that You would teach us
- 10:35to truly value that access, to not take it for granted, but to
- 10:40lean into it every single day. Would you strengthen us, Lord?
- 10:45Would you guard our hearts and our minds from the enemy's
- 10:48schemes? Would you make us more aware,
- 10:52more watchful, more rooted in your truth?
- 10:56God help us to stand firm. We cannot do this in our own
- 11:01ability, but in your power. Would you direct our hearts
- 11:06deeper into your pure love God, and into Christ's steadfast
- 11:12perseverance? We love you, we trust you, and
- 11:18we give you this day. We surrender our hearts to you,
- 11:20God, and your name. Amen.
- 11:24OK y'all, that's what I have for today's episode.
- 11:27Happy Friday. I'm praying for y'all as you
- 11:29move into the weekend and finish out the week strong.
- 11:33And I will see y'all on the next podcast.
