- 0:05where we explore the latest developments in technology,
- 0:08science and the world of startups.
- 0:10And I think we have an intriguing story that takes us
- 0:13to the frontier of biotechnology and human machine interfaces.
- 0:18We'll be discussing neural links.
- 0:20Groundbreaking announcement, the start of their first human
- 0:23clinical trial, known as the PRIME Study.
- 0:27Now, with the green light from an independent review board,
- 0:30Neuralink is set to implant their brain, computer interface
- 0:34and paralysis patients to assess the device's safety and
- 0:37functionality. And it's a big step for a
- 0:40startup from Elon Musk that's been under both scrutiny and
- 0:44highly anticipated. This is the moment many have
- 0:47been waiting for, the pivot from animal testing to human testing.
- 0:51According to Nerling's own blog, the prime study, short for
- 0:54Precise Robotically Implanted Brain Computer Interface, will
- 0:59be conducted over six years. The initial phase consists of 18
- 1:03months of at home and clinic visits, followed by regular
- 1:07followups over the next five years.
- 1:09The target demographic includes individuals with quadriplegia
- 1:13due to cervical spinal cord injuries, or lateral sclerosis,
- 1:17commonly known as a LS. In this trial, they will have a
- 1:21chip surgically inserted into the part of the brain that
- 1:24controls the intention to move. This chip, placed by a robot,
- 1:28will then transmit brain signals to an app, with the primary goal
- 1:32of enabling the individual to control a computer cursor or a
- 1:36keyboard solely through their thoughts.
- 1:40Now let's break down what the PRIME study actually entails.
- 1:44After getting the nod from the independent review board,
- 1:47Neuralink is moving forward with this initiative Focused on the
- 1:50practical application of brain computer interfaces, the
- 1:54implanted chip is designed to communicate with an app which
- 1:57will capture brain signals and translate them into actions.
- 2:01The immediate objective here is to get paralysis patients a way
- 2:04to control computer interfaces like cursors and keyboards
- 2:07without physical input, just by thinking about it.
- 2:11And the chip will be inserted by a robot into a specific region
- 2:14of the brain that's responsible for the intention to move.
- 2:17And it will be interesting to see how the technology evolves
- 2:20as the study proceeds over the next six years.
- 2:23Now the recruitment is open to people suffering from
- 2:26quadriplegia due to spinal cord injuries or a LS.
- 2:30The study is structured in such a way that it will be including
- 2:34eighteen months of clinic visits and at home monitoring, followed
- 2:37by five years of periodic follow up visits.
- 2:40And Neurolink has chosen A gradual approach, which could be
- 2:44a prudent decision given the sensitive nature of brain
- 2:48implants in the required FDA oversight.
- 2:51From what we've gathered, interested candidates can sign
- 2:54up through a patient registry on Neurolink's website, providing
- 2:57them a chance to be part of this experimental and potentially
- 3:01life altering technology. Now, this announcement also puts
- 3:04Nerlink in the limelight as a forerunner in the brain computer
- 3:08interface arena. And despite the controversy
- 3:10surrounding animal testing and the death of a monkey earlier
- 3:14this year, the transition to human trials could be a pivotal
- 3:17moment for both the company and the field of biotechnology.
- 3:21And while the initial goal is somewhat modest, enabling
- 3:24individuals to control a computer cursor or a keyboard,
- 3:26what we're looking at here could be the cornerstone of something
- 3:30much larger. And the technology has the
- 3:32potential to help us better understand the human brain and
- 3:35possibly provide breakthroughs in treating neurological
- 3:39disorders, among other applications.
- 3:43Though Neuralink has been in the works for approximately 5 years,
- 3:46it's experiments so far have been limited to animal testing,
- 3:50and these experiments have not been without controversy.
- 3:53In 2022, one of the test monkeys died during project testing,
- 3:58leading to increased scrutiny of Neuralink's practices.
- 4:01And Elon Musk's inspiration for Neuralink, as reported in a book
- 4:05by Walter Isaacson, comes from science fiction writers like
- 4:09Lane Banks. There isn't is for a neural lace
- 4:12technology that allows for seamless brain machine
- 4:15interaction. Now, last May, the company
- 4:18announced FDA clearance for its human clinical trials and
- 4:22approval confirmed by the FDA Now.
- 4:24Additionally, Neural Link raised $280 million in funding round
- 4:29led by the Founders Fund. And Neural Link didn't have an
- 4:32easy time getting approval for human testing.
- 4:34Though. The FDA initially rejected
- 4:37Neural Links request in 2022 due to concerns about implant
- 4:41migration and potential brain tissue damage, and despite
- 4:45previous announcements, it was only this year that they
- 4:47obtained the green light for trials after addressing many of
- 4:51the FD A's concerns. However, internal voices within
- 4:55Neural Link have raised concerns that the company is hurrying its
- 4:58technology to market, which they argue has resulted in negligent
- 5:02animal testing in even a federal investigation.
- 5:06Now ethical questions loom large, especially when it comes
- 5:09to the treatment of test animals.
- 5:11An advocacy group for ethical science research, the Physicians
- 5:16Committee for Responsible Medicine, has called for an SEC
- 5:20investigation into Elon Musk for possible securities fraud
- 5:23related to his claims about the safety of neuro links.
- 5:26Animal trials. Publicly disclosed health
- 5:29records of the test monkeys showed significant health issues
- 5:32post implant, including infections, brain swelling, and
- 5:35more. Furthermore, Musk's claimed that
- 5:38the monkeys were close to death have been criticized as
- 5:41misleading or even blatantly false.
- 5:43While the technology is captivating, Nur Lake has a long
- 5:46journey ahead filled with challenges.
- 5:49From securing additional FDA approvals to addressing ethical
- 5:52concerns, the path isn't straightforward.
- 5:55Other companies like Synchron Inc have already implanted
- 5:58devices into the human brain, showing that neural link is not
- 6:01alone in this high stakes race. The future of brain computer
- 6:05interfaces is slowly materializing, but it remains a
- 6:08complex insensitive area that demands the utmost caution.
