Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hey, IT Changemakers, and welcome to The Deck Show with
- 0:06Speaker 1: Tom McGraw.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Let's get into it. Hello, everybody. Last week, something incredible
- 0:13Speaker 2: happened in Orlando, and it was, of course, Experience 2026.
- 0:18Speaker 2: It was the biggest and best experience ever for The
- 0:23Speaker 2: Deck Show. Let me tell you, Experience, it's no joke,
- 0:26Speaker 2: and we're still recovering this Wednesday morning. And it's for
- 0:31Speaker 2: that reason that a very rare thing happened last week,
- 0:33Speaker 2: I'm afraid to say, which is that we missed an episode. Honestly,
- 0:37Speaker 2: we absolutely hate that. We're so sorry. Who knows, though?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Maybe we're in a position to make it all back
- 0:42Speaker 2: to you this week with something of a double bill.
- 0:46Speaker 2: And we're going to get to what that is on
- 0:48Speaker 2: today's episode in just a moment. But first of all,
- 0:51Speaker 2: just to say, just to reiterate, that Orlando really was amazing.
- 0:56Speaker 2: The JW Marriott was an incredible venue. And of course,
- 1:00Speaker 2: all of you, be you customers, analysts, speakers, leaders, world-renowned mentalists. Okay,
- 1:06Speaker 2: there was only one of those. You were all absolutely phenomenal.
- 1:10Speaker 2: We know so many of our listeners made it out
- 1:12Speaker 2: there because you came to say hello, and we really,
- 1:14Speaker 2: really appreciate that. But of course, needless to say, if
- 1:18Speaker 2: you couldn't be there for any reason and you are
- 1:20Speaker 2: normally an inexperienced attendee, please know you are absolutely missed,
- 1:25Speaker 2: particularly some of those great friends very close to the show.
- 1:30Speaker 2: And indeed, if you couldn't make it, this announcement and
- 1:32Speaker 2: indeed this episode is as much about you and for
- 1:35Speaker 2: you as it is anyone else out there. Because while
- 1:37Speaker 2: we're going to be having a bit of a recap
- 1:39Speaker 2: momentarily with a deck show regular guest, and we're going
- 1:43Speaker 2: to be resharing for the first time the recording we
- 1:47Speaker 2: made out there of the deck show's own experience, appearance,
- 1:51Speaker 2: hosting what we called IT Nerd Mastermind. There's something we
- 1:56Speaker 2: also want to take a minute to announce today, which
- 1:58Speaker 2: is whether you missed experience entirely or simply want to
- 2:02Speaker 2: be the first person out there to relive some prime
- 2:06Speaker 2: experience 2026 content, you can now already register for the much-loved, much-celebrated, much-attended,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and hopefully much-enjoyed webinar, The Best of Experience 26, Agents
- 2:20Speaker 2: of Change in Action. So that is actually broadcast on
- 2:24Speaker 2: November the 12th. We'll be broadcasting separately for our European audience,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and sort of North American audiences respectively. But you're going
- 2:34Speaker 2: to absolutely be able to join and find a time
- 2:37Speaker 2: that works for you wherever you are in the world.
- 2:41Speaker 2: And look, yeah, you will see the very first post-event
- 2:45Speaker 2: previews of some of the Experience 26 highlights there. And
- 2:49Speaker 2: the rumor is that you're also going to be the
- 2:51Speaker 2: first to get access following the broadcast to more Experience content.
- 2:57Speaker 2: If you've never attended the Best of Experience webinars, it's
- 3:00Speaker 2: something you've got to do. It's really, really super fun.
- 3:03Speaker 2: We have phenomenal special guests every year. It's a bit
- 3:06Speaker 2: like a Dex reaction video on YouTube, if you know those.
- 3:11Speaker 2: We really do enjoy ourselves, and we really hope you
- 3:15Speaker 2: can join us, whether you could make it or couldn't
- 3:17Speaker 2: make it. And as I said, we're going to get to, shortly,
- 3:21Speaker 2: IT Nerd Mastermind. But before we do... Let's ask, let's
- 3:26Speaker 2: have a bit of an event recap with one of
- 3:28Speaker 2: our favourite regular guests. She's Laura Reeve, Senior Client Director.
- 3:32Speaker 2: She was, of course, out there in Orlando. How are
- 3:35Speaker 2: you doing, Laura? How are you recovering from it all?
- 3:38Speaker 1: Hey, Tom, thank you so much for having me back,
- 3:40Speaker 1: especially after a very exciting week. I will say I
- 3:43Speaker 1: am just about recovered from jet lag, but very excited
- 3:46Speaker 1: to be reliving some of the moments from last week.
- 3:49Speaker 1: It was a really, really exciting show.
- 3:52Speaker 2: How many experiences... I actually know the answer, Laura, because
- 3:55Speaker 2: I think both of our first experiences were respectively 2019, right?
- 3:59Speaker 2: That's right.
- 3:59Speaker 1: No, no, you're right.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I mean....
- 4:04Speaker 1: I will say, I think this is, same as you,
- 4:06Speaker 1: it was our eighth year of experience shows, including, you know,
- 4:10Speaker 1: the virtual pandemic ones.
- 4:11Speaker 2: The pandemic years, yes, absolutely.
- 4:13Speaker 1: The pandemic years, but yes, the eighth year, and gosh,
- 4:17Speaker 1: I will say, Next Inc put on a good show.
- 4:18Speaker 1: This was truly a special one, for sure, and I
- 4:21Speaker 1: know that we'll continue to get bigger and better as well.
- 4:24Speaker 1: But yes, eight years, I can't believe it, you and I.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And to give some context into the growth of those
- 4:29Speaker 2: eight years, Laura, I mean, We were in Tribeca or
- 4:33Speaker 2: something back in 2019. It's kind of trendy part of
- 4:36Speaker 2: New York, of Manhattan, it felt like. And it was,
- 4:40Speaker 2: you know, like a couple of few hundred people or
- 4:42Speaker 2: something like that.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I mean, again, yeah, it was. And I remember, you know,
- 4:47Speaker 1: about eight years ago, it was we used to do
- 4:49Speaker 1: a bit more of a tour. So it was New York, Frankfurt, Paris, London. And,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you know, we've been building and building and building to
- 4:56Speaker 1: this year where it was a truly global show. right
- 5:00Speaker 1: and yeah as you said even growth in terms of
- 5:03Speaker 1: in terms of audience yes a few hundred um into
- 5:07Speaker 1: now the thousands which is quite incredible and i say
- 5:10Speaker 1: it's not only grown in in numbers of people but
- 5:12Speaker 1: also grown in its kind of thought leadership you know
- 5:16Speaker 1: what it's what the show is providing the tracks the
- 5:18Speaker 1: certifications just a lot to do now yeah it's really
- 5:23Speaker 1: become something quite.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Special and um as uh regular listeners will know you
- 5:27Speaker 2: work very closely with some of the I think, fair
- 5:30Speaker 2: to say, the world's best digital workplaces. And from those
- 5:35Speaker 2: partners and customers that you work with, you this year,
- 5:38Speaker 2: as in other years, had a really great kind of representation,
- 5:43Speaker 2: not only at the event, but on various stages. Maybe
- 5:47Speaker 2: give a bit of a recap of who they were
- 5:51Speaker 2: and what they presented on, first of all.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, we had some amazing speakers from organizations
- 5:57Speaker 1: from across the globe. I mean, I think some standouts
- 5:59Speaker 1: me it was happy uh they've doing some great things
- 6:04Speaker 1: right now obviously taking away a dex awards which i
- 6:06Speaker 1: guess we can probably speak about in a little bit
- 6:09Speaker 1: always great to hear from wingard and ey i feel
- 6:12Speaker 1: like he always lights up that always lights up the
- 6:14Speaker 1: stage um with his presentation style and of course it's
- 6:17Speaker 1: great to hear what they're doing you know it's such
- 6:20Speaker 1: sheer scale um and I think there was a few
- 6:23Speaker 1: people that have taken to the stage for the first time,
- 6:25Speaker 1: one being Marsh, you know, fantastic organization that, you know,
- 6:29Speaker 1: really being very open about how they mobilize data at
- 6:33Speaker 1: scale in their organization. And of course, on the main stage,
- 6:37Speaker 1: we heard from Aon, which was, it was a great
- 6:42Speaker 1: overview of how they're elevating colleague experience to the same
- 6:46Speaker 1: level as client experience at board level really making sure
- 6:50Speaker 1: that they're taking that extremely seriously um in order to
- 6:53Speaker 1: make decks a competitive advantage and it was great to
- 6:56Speaker 1: see brian from braxton right i mean he's a natural
- 6:59Speaker 1: on stage it's fantastic he's been on stage a few
- 7:02Speaker 1: years ago and it's just gosh great to see how
- 7:03Speaker 1: they're continuing to mature as an organization every single time
- 7:09Speaker 1: I see him. Yeah, I'd say a couple of other
- 7:12Speaker 1: highlights for me were certainly National Grid, powerhouse presentation from
- 7:18Speaker 1: Lou there, from cloud to ground. It truly was. He
- 7:21Speaker 1: can go strategic and he can go right down into
- 7:24Speaker 1: massively detailed AI strategy. And PayPal, great deal from them
- 7:29Speaker 1: as well. I mean, I couldn't pick a highlight, but gosh,
- 7:32Speaker 1: it was really, really amazing just to sit back and
- 7:35Speaker 1: see the enthusiasm, the work that's happening, the strategies behind
- 7:39Speaker 1: all these organizations, and of course, the connected tissue being experienced.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Okay, that's a wonderful summation. Thank you so much. And
- 7:47Speaker 2: we won't keep you much longer because I know you've
- 7:50Speaker 2: got a very, we've all got very, very busy weeks
- 7:52Speaker 2: in the immediate aftermath of experience as we're doing the
- 7:54Speaker 2: buildup to it. So I'm just going to leave you
- 7:57Speaker 2: with a question, Where and when across the event, Laura,
- 8:01Speaker 2: did you have the most fun this year at Experience Orlando?
- 8:06Speaker 1: Oh gosh, I think I'm going to give you kind
- 8:08Speaker 1: of two. I'm going to give you an official one
- 8:10Speaker 1: and then an unofficial one.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Nice.
- 8:12Speaker 1: So the official one I would say is actually, I
- 8:15Speaker 1: do want to make an actual call out because I
- 8:17Speaker 1: had a load of fun actually at the Women Index
- 8:20Speaker 1: Global Summit, just because it was time where we could
- 8:24Speaker 1: kind of decompress a little bit from the event and
- 8:26Speaker 1: it was really exciting space to be able to meet with,
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know, leaders that I've been talking with virtually and
- 8:32Speaker 1: we actually got together and, you know, we just, we
- 8:34Speaker 1: just had a laugh and we were able just to
- 8:36Speaker 1: connect and to, you know, to chat about what we're
- 8:40Speaker 1: excited about. And it just felt like a really exciting
- 8:43Speaker 1: space to create. Now the unofficial one, was because obviously
- 8:47Speaker 1: you just teased that this is the next section of
- 8:50Speaker 1: the double bill, was when you were half testing me,
- 8:54Speaker 1: you know, practicing for the Art of Nerd event. And
- 8:58Speaker 1: I actually fared surprisingly well in one of the topics.
- 9:01Speaker 2: That's such a good point. I'd almost forgotten in the maelstrom.
- 9:05Speaker 2: So little context for listeners. You are about to hear...
- 9:09Speaker 2: IT Nerd Mastermind, which, okay, English listeners or anyone familiar
- 9:13Speaker 2: with the English quiz show Mastermind is going to realize
- 9:17Speaker 2: wasn't entirely an original format or concept. But, you know,
- 9:21Speaker 2: we had various special guests. You're going to hear it
- 9:25Speaker 2: in a moment, answering questions predominantly on specialist IT Nerd topics.
- 9:30Speaker 2: We were preparing for this show on, I guess, like
- 9:33Speaker 2: the Monday afternoon, something like that. We bump into Laura...
- 9:39Speaker 2: in the hall and i wanted to stress test some
- 9:42Speaker 2: of these questions and just see to see if they
- 9:44Speaker 2: sound and also see how long it took to ask
- 9:47Speaker 2: them right so we just fired some random star wars
- 9:50Speaker 2: questions at laura here oh my goodness she smashed it
- 9:55Speaker 2: she got she got like she actually did better off
- 9:58Speaker 2: the cuff i'm sorry to say this for now star
- 10:00Speaker 2: wars contestants that you're about to hear I was surprised.
- 10:04Speaker 1: I don't know where this knowledge was, but it's obviously
- 10:06Speaker 1: so deep in my brain that it came out. But
- 10:10Speaker 1: that was fun. I mean, it was really fun to
- 10:12Speaker 1: do something off the cuff with you and obviously bump
- 10:14Speaker 1: into you into the show. But I was very surprised
- 10:16Speaker 1: by this deep-seated Star Wars knowledge.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I was surprised. In our seven years of friendship, Laura,
- 10:21Speaker 2: I had no idea you were such a nerd.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Well, you know, if I continue to surprise you, then
- 10:33Speaker 1: keep it interesting.
- 10:34Speaker 2: What else have you got in that locker? Okay, okay.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Who knows?
- 10:38Speaker 2: Laura, thank you so, so much for joining us today
- 10:42Speaker 2: for that little recap. It was lots of fun to
- 10:44Speaker 2: relive some of that with you. Everyone's going to next
- 10:48Speaker 2: hear IT Nerd Mastermind in full, so you'll be able
- 10:50Speaker 2: to test your own knowledge. Maybe you'll think, I could
- 10:53Speaker 2: have smashed the Star Wars questions or the X-Men questions
- 10:57Speaker 2: or the Pokemon questions, all of which is to come.
- 10:59Speaker 2: But let me take a moment to really thank all
- 11:03Speaker 2: of the guests who you're about to hear appear on
- 11:05Speaker 2: that show. They all did phenomenally well. We really, really
- 11:09Speaker 2: appreciate their participation. Also want to shout out Ella Dreimer,
- 11:13Speaker 2: our amazing deck show producer, for all her work on
- 11:16Speaker 2: the show, on IT Nerd Mastermind, but across the event,
- 11:20Speaker 2: along with our colleague David Edelman for his support in
- 11:23Speaker 2: getting that launched and for composing so many of those
- 11:26Speaker 2: occasionally controversially difficult questions. that Laura made such mincemeat of.
- 11:33Speaker 2: And lastly, before we let Laura go and before we
- 11:36Speaker 2: get on with the proceedings, remember, best of experience, 26
- 11:41Speaker 2: agents of change in action. The best webinar of the year,
- 11:46Speaker 2: not just in the DEX industry, but oh my goodness,
- 11:49Speaker 2: in any industry across the world. Thursday, November the 12th,
- 11:53Speaker 2: you can register now. You will be the first person
- 11:56Speaker 2: to see some of those highlights. You will get to
- 11:58Speaker 2: react to those highlights. with us and with our special guest.
- 12:02Speaker 2: And you will get access to some of those highlights
- 12:05Speaker 2: too in the wake of it. Make sure you register now.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Link is in the show notes. Laura, thank you so much.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Tom, thank you so much for having me back. It
- 12:14Speaker 1: was very fun to relive some of those moments, and
- 12:16Speaker 1: I'm interested to see how this mastermind goes. I'll be
- 12:18Speaker 1: tuning in right now.
- 12:20Speaker 2: You missed it live, I guess.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Yes, unfortunately I was, but looking forward to listening to it,
- 12:26Speaker 1: especially given my surprise.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yes, you're going to be smashing all the topics. You've
- 12:31Speaker 2: got to let me know if you do dangerously well
- 12:36Speaker 2: with Pokemon or Poker. Anyway. Here it is, everybody. IT
- 12:40Speaker 2: Nerd Mastermind. Enjoy. Thanks for coming to say hello. Thanks
- 12:43Speaker 2: for coming to see us. Thanks for coming if you
- 12:44Speaker 2: could come. And if not, regardless, we'll see you all
- 12:48Speaker 2: in person next year. Here it is. IT Nerd Mastermind
- 12:51Speaker 2: at Experience 26. My name is Tom McGrath, host of
- 12:57Speaker 2: the Deck Show. This is IT Nerd Mastermind. And once more,
- 13:02Speaker 2: please give it up for Experience 2026 in Orlando. Thank
- 13:07Speaker 2: you all so much. for coming. It's so exciting to
- 13:11Speaker 2: see you all here once again at this very special
- 13:13Speaker 2: Dex time of year. Now, IT Nerd Mastermind, it is
- 13:19Speaker 2: a special quiz show, I suppose, where we're going to
- 13:23Speaker 2: introduce you all to some very special contestants. Every single
- 13:28Speaker 2: one of them has picked a specialist topic, and there's
- 13:31Speaker 2: going to be a round of questions on their specialist topic,
- 13:35Speaker 2: and then there's going to be a round of questions
- 13:37Speaker 2: on general IT nerd knowledge, okay? Now, I'm going to
- 13:41Speaker 2: tell you a couple of those specialist topics right now,
- 13:44Speaker 2: and you're going to cheer if this rings your bell,
- 13:47Speaker 2: if you like the sound of it, okay? Specialist topic
- 13:50Speaker 2: sample number one, Star Wars. Do we have any Star
- 13:54Speaker 2: Wars fans out there? Let me see. Let me see.
- 13:56Speaker 2: We've got a Star Wars fan over there. Specialist topic
- 14:00Speaker 2: sample number two, Pokemon. Any Pokemon fans out there? How
- 14:08Speaker 2: about Pokemon fans when you were younger? Any takers there? Wonderful. Excellent. Now, obviously,
- 14:17Speaker 2: if we're going to be asking these tough questions of
- 14:19Speaker 2: these brave contestants, there has to be a prize, okay? Now,
- 14:25Speaker 2: it is 2026, everybody, so the last thing we would
- 14:29Speaker 2: have is anything so misogynistic as a beautiful assistant to
- 14:34Speaker 2: parade the prize. So we have for you David Edelman.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I'm not saying he's not beautiful, but look at that.
- 14:42Speaker 2: That is a Lord of the Rings chess set. Could
- 14:45Speaker 2: you imagine a more fitting or indeed desirable prize for
- 14:49Speaker 2: our game show today? So with that, shall we get
- 14:53Speaker 2: on with the first round, which is, again, the specialist round.
- 14:58Speaker 2: So we'll have the specialist round, and then we will
- 15:01Speaker 2: have the general IT nerd knowledge round, okay? Two minutes
- 15:05Speaker 2: of questions, or is it two minutes thirty? Two and
- 15:08Speaker 2: a half minutes on the specialist topic and then one
- 15:11Speaker 2: and a half minutes on the general knowledge. So please
- 15:15Speaker 2: put your hands together to welcome our first very special guest,
- 15:21Speaker 2: Avery Miller, who's going to answer questions on X-Men. Welcome, Avery.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Wonderful to have you here. Beautiful T-shirt. Tell us a
- 15:31Speaker 2: bit about yourself. Apparently you can't tell us, because this
- 15:33Speaker 2: is going to be a deck show episode, we think,
- 15:36Speaker 2: so you can't tell us who you work for, apparently.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Okay.
- 15:38Speaker 2: So don't make, just tell us everything apart from that. Well,
- 15:40Speaker 2: not everything.
- 15:41Speaker 5: It's a secret.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Okay, okay. Tell us about yourself, Avery.
- 15:44Speaker 5: My name is Avery Miller. I graduated recently and didn't
- 15:49Speaker 5: know what to do with my life outside of working
- 15:50Speaker 5: when I graduated, so I got into comics.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You got into comics after you graduated?
- 15:55Speaker 5: Yes, so about two and a half years ago.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 15:58Speaker 5: And I've read almost 3,000 comics since then.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Congratulations. That's amazing. Round of applause for Avery, everybody. Why
- 16:07Speaker 2: X-Men in particular?
- 16:09Speaker 5: I have always felt very connected to the story of
- 16:12Speaker 5: just fighting for a better world, for the dream of
- 16:15Speaker 5: everybody being together and being unified. I think that's beautiful.
- 16:20Speaker 5: And also, the characters are just way cooler than the Avengers.
- 16:24Speaker 2: They're super cool. I have to tell you something, Avery.
- 16:26Speaker 2: My favorite superhero movies are the first two X-Men movies.
- 16:32Speaker 2: And my favorite comics as a kid were X-Men. So
- 16:35Speaker 2: I'm in your corner a little bit here. Beautiful.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Yes, X2 is one of the best movies.
- 16:40Speaker 2: No offense, everybody. I'm excited. Okay, so we're going to
- 16:45Speaker 2: have a timer, right? And I'm going to fire some
- 16:49Speaker 2: questions at you. And we've got somebody here, our assistant, David, again.
- 16:53Speaker 2: He is going to be keeping score.
- 16:55Speaker 5: Okay.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Because obviously I can't do all of this at once,
- 16:58Speaker 2: you know. So are you ready? Are you ready, Avery?
- 17:02Speaker 2: Is everybody ready to see how Avery does? Yeah. Okay. Excellent. Okay.
- 17:08Speaker 2: When I say, I'll count you in, timer starts, and
- 17:12Speaker 2: I'll start firing the questions. Oh, one more thing. You
- 17:15Speaker 2: can answer or you can say pass. And if you
- 17:18Speaker 2: say pass, then maybe we have a chance to come
- 17:19Speaker 2: back to it, but we can move on that way. Okay. Three, two, one. Avery,
- 17:27Speaker 2: Beast's real name is Hank McCoy, but what is his
- 17:30Speaker 2: middle name? Pass.
- 17:34Speaker 5: Pass.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Okay. What is Gambit's real name?
- 17:38Speaker 5: Remy Etienne Lebeau.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Correct. In which New York County is the Xavier School.
- 17:43Speaker 5: Westchester.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Excellent. Who are Cable's parents?
- 17:48Speaker 5: Scott Summers and Jean Grey.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Correct.
- 17:50Speaker 5: No, Madeline Pryor. Sorry.
- 17:52Speaker 2: I couldn't quite hear that.
- 17:53Speaker 6: Sorry.
- 17:54Speaker 5: My bad.
- 17:55Speaker 2: She's right. She's right. Okay. Which member of the team
- 17:58Speaker 2: first appeared in Incredible Hulk 180 in 1974... Wolverine.
- 18:01Speaker 7: Correct.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Wolverine. What smell accompanies Nightcrawler's teleportation moves?
- 18:08Speaker 5: Brimstone.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Correct. What is Juggernaut's real name?
- 18:12Speaker 5: Cain Marko.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Correct. Terrifying stuff here, everybody. What was the name of
