Transcript
- 0:14All right, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:17Tuesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network back for six hours of
- 0:22Iowa based program and thank you for starting your afternoon here
- 0:25with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:28program in 25 minutes. Matt Poston's covers the Big 12
- 0:34for Heartland College Sports. One game in the books in the Big
- 0:3812, another slate coming up this weekend.
- 0:41Some big games, some national spotlight for Baylor, certainly
- 0:45for TCU on Monday night when the country will be watching
- 0:49Belichick versus TCU. So we'll talk to Matt Postons
- 0:53about the Big 12 when he joins us at about 12:25.
- 0:56Mitch Holtis has got a couple more appearances with Trent and
- 1:00I before he gets into his weekly conversations.
- 1:02He will join us about 12:45-ish, then we'll head to Iowa City.
- 1:07John Bowen Camp, Associated Press.
- 1:10It's Hawkeye Weekly media availability players this
- 1:14morning. So that will have taken place
- 1:16when John joins us at 1:00. Kirk Ference won't speak until
- 1:201:45, but we'll talk about the Hawks and what the John, how
- 1:24John sees their upcoming season, etcetera, etcetera.
- 1:27We'll do that to kick off the second hour of our show and then
- 1:30we'll go on record because next week after all this, Cy Hawk and
- 1:34that will dominate the conversation despite the fact
- 1:36that it's week one of the NFL, it'll be seihawk, seihawk,
- 1:39seihawk, NFL baseball, seihawk, seihawk, seihawk.
- 1:42So we'll make our predictions. Get those out of the way today
- 1:45before we turn things over to off the bench.
- 1:47Lucas and Sean coming up from 2:00 until 5:00.
- 1:52Baseball last night. You know, Speaking of baseball
- 1:55and any other Monday, this probably would have started our
- 1:58program and you and Sean were kicking.
- 2:01Just, you know, our usual preacher.
- 2:04That's not a meeting BS we do and we were talking about the
- 2:09Field of Dreams and Tommy Birch is going to be on with Sean
- 2:11later on. I think that's how it came up.
- 2:13We never even mentioned it yesterday.
- 2:16Yeah, I I had it on my list for Matt Snyder and just didn't get
- 2:18to it as we were talking a myriad of different things, but
- 2:22quite the coup and that, well, there'll be one game I'll be
- 2:25excited about for the Twins next.
- 2:26Year. No, it has to be right.
- 2:27And how about Bob Nightingale? Yeah.
- 2:31I mean, he he he swung and missed twice before he realized,
- 2:36OK, it's not the Guardians, it's not going to be the Mets, It's
- 2:39the Twins. I mean, is it another case of
- 2:42the race to be first? Yes, absolutely.
- 2:44Bob Nightingale for a long time has been known as that kind of
- 2:46guy. He's misses more stuff, Trent.
- 2:49He truly does. But he gets it out there and
- 2:51eventually gets right. And he gets it right.
- 2:53Yeah. But nonetheless, right or wrong,
- 2:55it's, it's going to be fascinating.
- 2:56I for my money. For my money.
- 2:58I didn't grow up here. This to me is the most, that was
- 3:02the biggest game in our state. I know there's been big football
- 3:04games about Jack Dreisenich Stadium.
- 3:07I mean, huge games, I get it. But for the national spotlight,
- 3:12the way it was and the way it played, you're not going to get
- 3:14Kevin Costner to come back. Again.
- 3:16Right. The Griffey's aren't coming back
- 3:17to have a game of catch the way it was done.
- 3:21It'll I don't think it'll ever come close and I'm glad that
- 3:24some time it lapsed between the very first rendition or edition
- 3:28rather of of name of a Field of Dreams game to this one.
- 3:33I mean, I think it's going to be great, but I don't think I'm
- 3:37close. I don't see how you possibly
- 3:39can, Trent. It's impossible to replicate
- 3:41what it was. It was so special.
- 3:43It was perfect. The game was incredible.
- 3:46I mean, you had just so many components that it's, it's
- 3:48difficult to replicate anything close to that.
- 3:50But that's OK. That's OK because you'll get 2
- 3:52new fan bases there. You'll hopefully have a Trent
- 3:55Condon somewhere inside that building.
- 3:58I'm going to be you. Should have seen him
- 3:59politicking. I don't.
- 4:02I don't try to put my foot down very often.
- 4:04That was one. If we get a press pass, I call
- 4:06dibs on. If it's only one, it's going to
- 4:08this guy because I'm the only Twins fan.
- 4:10You are. It makes perfect sense.
- 4:12Makes perfect sense. So.
- 4:14Anyway, Heather got to go to Ireland.
- 4:16She did. I'll go to Dyersville.
- 4:18Yeah, it's much easier trip. No, I I didn't.
- 4:21I saw a lot of people just had nightmares.
- 4:23I mean, some of those poor people that never got that one
- 4:25travel company, they never got there, and they're not going to
- 4:28refund their money. I mean, come on.
- 4:30What an awful look by that company.
- 4:31I wish it's on something. Anyways, I don't think Heather
- 4:35had travel nightmares, did you? See.
- 4:36Didn't. No, it didn't seem.
- 4:37Like I saw a lot that did getting, but you know what air
- 4:40travel, right? It's come to be expected.
- 4:43It's the price you have to pay when you get to.
- 4:45For some people, that had to be a once in a lifetime.
- 4:48Experience. Oh, no doubt, right.
- 4:49And incredibly had a lot of FOMO.
- 4:51I mean it looked so much fun. Especially the way it turned
- 4:53turned down. Now K State fans might not feel
- 4:55on location. Thank you is the is the company
- 4:58that left a lot of people high and dry.
- 5:00But for a lot of for for a lot the K State fans, their their
- 5:04trip home wasn't very good, but Iowa State fans were still on
- 5:07cloud 9, literally. Probably wasn't a fun to drive
- 5:10our flight back either for the Johnson family, right?
- 5:13That would have been awkward, right?
- 5:14That would have been really. You think they were shoulder to
- 5:16shoulder? Yeah, You know what it's it's in
- 5:20a, it's in a way, it's really sad.
- 5:22You know, it's sad that it came to that, especially when it's
- 5:27not like, you know, you're the backup left guard and and no
- 5:30offense to backup left guard families around the country.
- 5:33It means this is a quarterback, the face of the franchise, and
- 5:36for his dad and his brother to get into it the way that they
- 5:38did. There was talk that they should
- 5:43suspend Avery. Yeah, you mentioned that.
- 5:45You can't. You.
- 5:46Yeah. Nothing.
- 5:47You had nothing to do with it. Exactly what are you going to do
- 5:50that? I mean, that makes zero sense to
- 5:51me. Avery Johnson's going to miss a
- 5:53game. I.
- 5:54Mean if you're because. Of your because of your stupid
- 5:56brother and father. Your dad's a crook.
- 5:58Does that mean that you need to have a suspension or no?
- 6:00Absolutely not. It's it's laughable.
- 6:03It's laughable, but that is the environment.
- 6:05I, I guess, I guess I would say put out their depth chart today.
- 6:10There's changes on it. Yes, I'm shocked by this.
- 6:13I truly am sure normally we would get one depth chart and
- 6:17like it or leave it. Like it or leave it.
- 6:20That's it. We'll put one out if we make it
- 6:23to the bowl game, but they're taking this very seriously and
- 6:26good for them. Do you think this has something
- 6:28to do with the availability room?
- 6:29Yes, I think it has everything to.
- 6:31Do with do you? Yeah, that that is the reason
- 6:34that we see this is because, well, it's going to be out there
- 6:36because of the injury. Report.
- 6:38So let's stop hiding behind anything.
- 6:40It's out there. Everybody has to do it in the
- 6:42Big 12. Let's just go out there and do
- 6:44it. I think it's great.
- 6:46I. Think it's great Trevor Burr's
- 6:48back at starting left guard. So will we find out what his
- 6:51illness was? I don't need to know, yeah.
- 6:56It's like we talk about with injury reports.
- 6:58Yeah, I don't know if it don't need, if it's your shoulder, if
- 6:59it's your knee, if it's your ankle, whatever you're playing
- 7:02or you're not, are you questionable?
- 7:05Are you probable or whatever it is, however they designate them.
- 7:08No, I, I don't, I don't know, you know what if, if we, if
- 7:13we'll ever find out what it is. But they're, they miss him and
- 7:16they're going to go right back into that left guard spot.
- 7:19I don't know what they'll do as far as the center position.
- 7:22Boniface Barrett Black's going, he was at right guard.
- 7:24So I'm sure he will stay there. You know, one guy we never
- 7:27mentioned. It was a hell of a play.
- 7:28And I wish I I had it in my notes to give Jameson Patton his
- 7:32flowers because what a play he made on Avery Johnson when he's
- 7:35trying to pick up that 4th. Down.
- 7:37I mean here he comes like a freaking missile.
- 7:40He had bad intentions on his mind and he got there and
- 7:43delivered a hit and probably prevented K State from
- 7:48continuing the drive with a fresh set of downs.
- 7:50One of the I I see right now that Haycock is up on the
- 7:53podium. Is he right now?
- 7:55And a guy that we didn't talk about, I don't believe is a
- 7:58pretty big story. Jeremiah Cooper playing
- 8:00cornerback. Yeah, the switch.
- 8:02Yep. Going over there because they
- 8:05are not real deep at that position.
- 8:06Yet, and he played a lot and now he is listed as the starting
- 8:10cornerback. Trey Bell is now looking up at
- 8:12him on the depth. Chart so you have that component
- 8:15of it and then the strength of safety that we did talk about
- 8:17with Pat and with Neil with those young guys and there's
- 8:19more of them surges, yes, they're incredibly deep in
- 8:22safety. It certainly makes sense.
- 8:24Now you talk about helping yourself out next April.
- 8:28Oh yeah. I was just a all Big 12 player
- 8:30at safety. Then I had to move over to
- 8:32cornerback. You talk about going up draft
- 8:34boards and being able to do that and do it at a high level.
- 8:37I've always loved Jeremiah Cooper.
- 8:38I mean, he popped right away. You could just see he was
- 8:41special. And you throw that in there,
- 8:43you're probably talking about another day two pick for Iowa
- 8:46State with that kind of versatility.
- 8:48I see that draft, Knicks, Dane Brueglers of the world, they
- 8:53have the big citrus in the second round.
- 8:55I don't know where he was prior to this game.
- 8:57I'm guessing probably, you know, second, third, fourth round.
- 9:00But the big citrus man, he had himself a game, Dominic Horne.
- 9:03So we shall see. South Dakota coming up.
- 9:06They get a pretty good lead into their game television wise,
- 9:10Texas, Ohio State, right into South Dakota versus Iowa State.
- 9:14So hopefully people will leave their TV's there.
- 9:16But there's so many games, there's so many options on that
- 9:19particular day. Anything else depth chart wise
- 9:22jump out to you. Burp being listed, the fact that
- 9:27Cooper is now listed as a starting corner.
- 9:30I don't think there are any more changes that I that I have seen
- 9:36Townsend still behind Eli. Oh, there is an or there was
- 9:39there an or there the first week?
- 9:41There may have been, but but no, I don't think so.
- 9:45I think it's basically, I think it's basically the same Cupler,
- 9:50Cupler. Evil now in the middle, with
- 9:52Brazina behind him and so. Brazina, is he OK?
- 9:55I think so. I mean, he's listed there, so
- 9:57you can anticipate and we'll see kind of what that's going to
- 9:59look like. But that's something that I
- 10:01think is going to be so interesting to track throughout
- 10:03the course of the season. What this looks like as it
- 10:05pertains to like I said, I was so shocked to see love it out
- 10:09there. And he was out there in the
- 10:10second quarter because I saw numbers zero.
- 10:11I'm like, of course, got the roster in front of me because
- 10:14that's what you got to do game one.
- 10:16And I'm like, did somebody change their number?
- 10:18Because I just didn't think with all the depth that they had,
- 10:23look, love it comes in from Missouri.
- 10:24There was a pretty big height for him.
- 10:26He isn't that level, but to go out there and get 15 snaps, that
- 10:30shows you the depth that they have and have a guy like that
- 10:31that you know has been able to help them out.
- 10:34Good special teams player and doing those kind of things.
- 10:37But you need those kind of guys. But you can't play 7 linebackers
- 10:40throughout the course of the season and if everybody's
- 10:42healthy. If everybody's healthy, I mean,
- 10:44they had to last year, they were forced to and it's, it's
- 10:47providing, you know, I mean, they, they, they had growing
- 10:50pains last year, but the fruit of those troubles certainly
- 10:54showing. Well, there's some massive news
- 10:56and I don't know if it's how to take it, but it's it's moving
- 11:00needles. I'm guaranteed this this story
- 11:02is about to break Twitter. Oh, really?
- 11:03It's about to break Twitter. The podcast broke Twitter.
- 11:07The engagement is going to break Twitter.
- 11:09They're engaged. It is.
- 11:11I don't even have to say their names.
- 11:13I know who you're talking. About the whole, the whole
- 11:15audience does. My phone's blowing up.
- 11:17But I don't know. I mean sure, I I don't like her
- 11:19a lot. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey
- 11:22are engaged. Announced it on Instagram.
- 11:24Wow. This isn't.
- 11:26You haven't been duped. Right.
- 11:27No, This is this is from Adam Schefter.
- 11:29This OK, This is from people. Yeah.
- 11:32This is legit. This is legit.
- 11:34It's like your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting
- 11:36married. That's pretty good.
- 11:38But anyways, so congratulations. Yes.
- 11:43Easy to root for. Yeah, it is.
- 11:44It is. That's kids having a great time.
- 11:47No, they really are. Good stuff.
- 11:48Hope they make it anyways. Hawkeye news today we're going
- 11:51to hear from some player. Well, we're not, but the media
- 11:53that's in Iowa City will hear from some players.
- 11:56Anybody you want to hear from? Is there anything that's
- 11:58lingering out there for you? A question that, you know, if
- 12:00you could make it over to Iowa City to ask Kirk Ferranson, I
- 12:02know you're going to be there on Friday.
- 12:04Yes, you're going to represent the Miller and Condon show.
- 12:06And then of course, Off the Bench is going to be there.
- 12:09Fryfest is happy to get. What year is that for this
- 12:11event? Well, it's been going on maybe
- 12:1315 years now. It's.
- 12:14Been a while, right? And I've never been able to make
- 12:17it just because of the way that my Fridays look.
- 12:19I've never been able to pull it off.
- 12:21High school football that night, high school football and just in
- 12:24the past when it started, different times and different
- 12:26shows. So just never was able to do it.
- 12:28I'm excited and I'm excited to get over there and kind of see
- 12:31all the the pomp and circumstance and my buddies that
- 12:33live in North Liberty, they go every year and, and talk about
- 12:36all the fun things that you do and going through different
- 12:39people that are Hawking different items and seeing
- 12:41different things, you know, so. That's what it's about.
- 12:42Well, there, there's part of that.
- 12:43It's just a celebration of, of all things, Hawkeye.
- 12:47So yeah, excited to get over there for the first time.
- 12:49Not going to be able to stay long because I got back and and
- 12:52a pretty big one for me in Week 1.
- 12:53Yeah. Valley Dolly.
- 12:54Yeah. So where are those two schools?
- 12:57I mean, did have you gone far as far as to do your preseason
- 12:59rankings? I and how accurate if you, if I
- 13:02was to put five people over high school sports in the state of
- 13:05Iowa, if I was to get all their rankings, would there be
- 13:09consensus or is this kind of one of these years where everybody's
- 13:12all over the map? I think in 5A, everybody that
- 13:15I've seen, and I've probably seen maybe 5 different rankings,
- 13:19yeah, including myself, yeah, has Dowling number. 1 Dowling,
- 13:22one How far behind is Valley? Top five OK, but they got some
- 13:27holes to fill now they got their quarterback back who was really
- 13:30good for them the last year and that's going to go a long ways
- 13:33it's offensive line for Valley. They lost a ton of front.
- 13:35Did they and early in the season do offensive line against
- 13:38Dowling? That could be pretty rough.
- 13:40I love. The fact that we normally see
- 13:42this game again, yes, you know, under the under the roof.
- 13:45We've seen that quite often. Dozens of times.
- 13:48Yeah, it's been great to have that Southeast poke is
- 13:50intriguing, of course. 3 state championships after that
- 13:53comeback win against Valley last year in the craziest.
- 13:56It was unbelievable. It truly was unbelievable.
- 13:59And I thank them because I got an award for the call of that
- 14:02game. Oh, I didn't know that this
- 14:03summer. Yeah.
- 14:04Got the radio broadcast Play by Play Call of the Year from the
- 14:08Broadcast Association. That's awesome.
- 14:10Yeah, it was. I didn't know.
- 14:11That that onside kick, that thing, you could kick that thing
- 14:151000 times. I don't think it takes that
- 14:16bounce outside of them, but it did and it bounces off and
- 14:20Southeast Poke, they're down, they're getting clubbed in that
- 14:24game and come back to win that one.
- 14:25That's remarkable. They got a lot of new faces, but
- 14:28Selenovich, what he has built out there at Southeast Poke, he
- 14:30certainly can't sleep on them. I like both the Waukeseat and
- 14:33he. Started at Ankeny right with the
- 14:35Hawks when the school split. He took over the Hawks, he took
- 14:40over the Hawks as Pizzetti went N with Centennial.
- 14:43Like both Waukee teams, I think they're both going to be pretty
- 14:46solid this year. The Yankee schools, I don't have
- 14:48quite the same kind of feel yet. Now when do they play?
- 14:51Week 1 or Week 2? They're.
- 14:53I think it's like week 3 or 4. That's a little bit later, yeah,
- 14:57than it's been in the past. Because it started the year some
- 14:59some years, right? But you mean there wasn't a week
- 15:011 a few? Years, yes.
- 15:02One team to keep an eye on. We obviously branched out now
- 15:06with our network, Sioux City EA Year ago, they had Valley in the
- 15:10ropes in the first round of the playoffs.
- 15:12They almost what they easily could have won that game against
- 15:15the team that must have been away from winning A state
- 15:17championship. They return a ton.
- 15:20And so far and away the best team in the Western.
- 15:22Half of the state, I mean the gap between them and everybody.
- 15:24Else so they'll be, if they're, if they don't get to the to the
- 15:28to the Dome, undefeated. You'd be surprised.
- 15:30Well, to the playoffs maybe, and I haven't taken a look at the at
- 15:34their pro because remember, teams play each other a lot more
- 15:37in the past. So it's not that they're only
- 15:38going to play teams from the West side of the state.
- 15:39But if you're looking for a sleeper, certainly look at them.
- 15:42Cedar Falls got a ton of talent. Again, PV from the east side of
- 15:45the state. Those would be a couple of the
- 15:46headliners that I'd be looking for.
- 15:48Good stuff, and you can't bet on this.
- 15:50No. And you used to be able to well,
- 15:52offshore, offshore. And you know what?
- 15:54That's that's too much. And then when I see that though,
- 15:57you know, taking this a step further and I don't think we
- 16:00discussed this, it was a couple of weeks, the story's a couple
- 16:02weeks old now that the Little League, I don't know, whatever
- 16:05their governing body is, the Little League association had to
- 16:08actually put out a statement that they are not in favor of
- 16:13betting on Little League. Of course not.
- 16:15The fact that they had to do that, who was offering that?
- 16:18Oh, I'm sure plenty of places. Like legitimate.
- 16:20Places I would. Think I might have an app on my
- 16:23phone from one of these places. I wouldn't be shocked.
- 16:26Are you kidding me that that? I know I've seen it before.
- 16:29I know, I've seen it. Before on Little League.
- 16:31Yes. Enough's enough.
- 16:33We got enough to bet on, don't we?
- 16:34Don't we have to draw the line being?
- 16:36Serious. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:37I mean, Little League is even taking it too, way too far.
- 16:40I mean, it's one thing like I do a pool with my buddies for high
- 16:44school, but that's just a pool with five friends, right?
- 16:46That's not having DraftKings. Come up with a number.
- 16:50Having FanDuel say, you know what, I got dialing -7 1/2, no,
- 16:54no. That isn't too long.
- 16:55They're up to 10 now. Come on.
- 16:57That's that's crazy. Yeah.
- 16:59There needs to be a line, and that's good.
- 17:01Well, we cannot bet on minor league sports.
- 17:03We cannot bet on the Iowa Cubs. And some places you can, I
- 17:07believe you can. And maybe it's it's outside our
- 17:10borders, OK. But I think you can bet on minor
- 17:12league games somewhere. That's interesting.
- 17:14Yeah, I know That was one of the rules I remember.
- 17:16Was it 7 years ago now? Six years ago, Six years ago,
- 17:192019. Yeah, six years ago.
- 17:22I remember that was one of the. Things about this time when we
- 17:24were in Prairie Meadows. Wasn't it August like the maybe
- 17:26the 15th? Something like that.
- 17:28I think we just passed the anniversary.
- 17:29I think we did. What a great time.
- 17:31Oh, you got your you. Did you make the first bet.
- 17:35The politicians went the dignitaries.
- 17:38Yes, there was a Republican leader and a Democrat.
- 17:40Like the two because the two sides.
- 17:42Were made a bet and bizzignano. The guy that had the Yankee
- 17:46jersey. On the Yankee, I think it might
- 17:47have been. I think it was a outside of from
- 17:49from maybe the supervisors. We're all sitting around.
- 17:52They do, you know, ribbon cutting for the sports book.
- 17:55Joe Asher and Gary Palmer and Kirk Rasmussen were there and
- 18:00and then they got through that. Yep, those two guys made-up
- 18:03their first bets. Yep.
- 18:05And then everyone's standing around.
- 18:06I'm like, well, I'm going to go make a pet thing.
- 18:08So outside of the dignitaries, I made the. 1st.
- 18:11Legal bet Joe Blow in the state of Iowa.
- 18:14You know, that's fitting. And I still got the ticket.
- 18:16Yeah, that's. Fit you do we didn't cash.
- 18:18No, I just, I threw 10 bucks on the Bears to win the Super Bowl.
- 18:21Yeah, that was that was never going.
- 18:22To catch. But you know what you that's
- 18:24fitting. You made the first bet.
- 18:26I need to make something with that ticket.
- 18:27I need to put that up in the man cave or something like that.
- 18:29I need to frame that. Because you've your pictures
- 18:32with it. Yes, absolutely.
- 18:33You're wearing your Expos hat. It's still my Twitter profile
- 18:36picture. Yep, that's me holding.
- 18:37The ticket in it? Yep, that's awesome.
- 18:39All right, I'll take a time out. Come back.
- 18:41We will talk Big 12 with our friend Matt Poston's Heartland
- 18:45College Sports. Do a little previewing on there.
- 18:48We got John Bowen Camp to kick off the second hour of the show.
- 18:52That has to do with I was meeting the the football team is
- 18:55meeting the media now. And before we get to Kirk
- 18:59Ference, we'll get to John Bowen Camp before the media gets to
- 19:02John Kirk Ference and then we will make some picks on the NFL.
- 19:06Miller and Condon underway. It's a Tuesday on the Iowa
- 19:08Sports Radio Network. Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome
- 19:11back wherever you're listening in the state of Iowa.
- 19:13Grateful that you are. I'm Mitch Holtis, the voice of
- 19:16the Kansas City Chiefs. Guessing the tenor of our
- 19:18conversation may have changed a tad.
- 19:20Just a little. But we'll talk to Mitch here
- 19:23coming up in about 15 or 20 minutes, probably closer to 20
- 19:26minutes right now. Matt Postons, Heartland College
- 19:28Sports where he they cover the Big 12 and do an unbelievable
- 19:32job in doing so. And he joins us.
- 19:34Hello, how are you Matt Postons? I'm good.
- 19:38So you guys want to talk about Taylor and Travis's engagement
- 19:41or every Major League Baseball schedule that just dropped like
- 19:4315 minutes ago? Yeah, they all did.
- 19:45They all come out today. I saw a couple of them.
- 19:47All, just every single one of them just dropped like 15
- 19:49minutes ago. So if you want to plan your 2026
- 19:52out for baseball, now is the time to start.
- 19:53Perfect time. Absolutely.
- 19:55Let's let's before we get into the weekend slate ahead, let's
- 19:58go back to the the weekend Farmageddon.
- 20:01A series that's unfortunately sounds as though it's not going
- 20:04to be played in unison after 2027.
- 20:08I'm sure it will return at some point.
- 20:10I guess I didn't realize Alec Bussey, our colleague and race
- 20:12to 24/7 as well. They've been playing this since
- 20:151917. The way he laid it out, I mean,
- 20:17it survived World War One, they played it, World War 2, they
- 20:20played it. COVID they played it and this is
- 20:23going to take it off the calendar 117 years straight of
- 20:27playing this game and it's all going to end.
- 20:28It doesn't have to Matt Poston's.
- 20:31No, it doesn't have to happen. And all you need to do is look
- 20:34up at the SEC did last week for a template.
- 20:37I mean, they, they finally moved to a nine game schedule.
- 20:39They're going to have three protected games for each team
- 20:42and then rotate, you know, six games, you know, each of the
- 20:45next two years. That way, everybody plays
- 20:47everybody at least once every two years.
- 20:50I mean, there's an easy way to do this.
- 20:51You put Kansas State, Kansas and Iowa State, the same pub with
- 20:54either Oklahoma State or somebody else, and you just tear
- 20:57up what you did for 2027. I don't think anybody in Kansas
- 21:00State or Iowa State's going to argue about that.
- 21:02And frankly, I think if you pot it geographically, I don't think
- 21:06anybody and the conference is going to whine about it.
- 21:09So it's it stinks. I mean, I realize you can't
- 21:12protect every rivalry, but when you're not protecting like a
- 21:16game between West Virginia and Cincinnati and you're not
- 21:19protecting a game, you know, like a, you know, like Tech and
- 21:22and Houston could be a really good rivalry.
- 21:25I don't really understand why we're only protecting four games
- 21:28in this conference. It doesn't make a whole lot of
- 21:30sense, and hopefully maybe the powers of B come to their senses
- 21:33a little bit more. Well, it's overreaction.
- 21:35That's what we do after the first game so over, give us a
- 21:38top line take away for both the Cyclones and the Wildcats as we
- 21:42go through course over the next 11 games for each of these
- 21:44teams. I don't like to overreact too
- 21:47much because, you know, honestly, you know, games like
- 21:51this, especially when you play a conference game, the first game
- 21:53of the of the season, it just kind of stinks because nobody's
- 21:56had the chance to work anything out in terms of, you know,
- 22:00rotations and things like that. I thought Iowa State did come
- 22:04out, you know, and played a relatively clean game and I
- 22:07think they showed that they've added some wrinkles to their
- 22:09offense that are going to be hard to deal with.
- 22:12I think they showed me enough to make me feel comfortable with
- 22:16the the potential progress of the wide receivers that have to
- 22:19replace Noel and Higgins this year.
- 22:22I think they've got enough talent there, but I think
- 22:24they're going to be the same team they've always been.
- 22:26They're going to run the ball well.
- 22:28They're going to be methodical. They're going to keep a good
- 22:30pace offensively. But I think I think there's
- 22:33potential there for their for them to be as explosive as they
- 22:36were a year ago as in the passing game.
- 22:39I just think it's going to take some time for that to to move
- 22:41along. And I overall, I like how Kansas
- 22:45State played that game. I really do.
- 22:46It's just they made too many mistakes.
- 22:48That's really what it boils down to.
- 22:50You cannot make the kinds of mistakes you make in a game like
- 22:53that in conference and expect to win.
- 22:55If they clean that up, they still have every opportunity to
- 22:57be a contender in this conference.
- 22:59The problem is now is they already have a conference loss
- 23:02going into September. So they had don't have nearly as
- 23:05much room to maneuver as Iowa State does.
- 23:07We kind of talked about this last month that this was whoever
- 23:10loses this game is going to have a harder road to get into the
- 23:13Big 12 title game than the other one because they're just not
- 23:15going to have as much room to maneuver.
- 23:17Both teams that got in last year had two losses.
- 23:20You know, that really puts Kansas State behind the 8 ball
- 23:22in that situation. Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 23:24Well, it's pretty. There's a couple of really big
- 23:27games. I'll throw Cincinnati, Nebraska
- 23:30on the slate. Obviously we've got the Baylor
- 23:33and Auburn, GA Tech, Colorado. That's a national spotlight game
- 23:37as well. And then we Fast forward to to
- 23:40Monday night. It doesn't get much bigger than
- 23:41the only game, TCU and North Carolina's.
- 23:45So it's good to see the Big 12 kind of stepping out a little
- 23:48bit. Even UCLA and Utah has got some
- 23:50cache to it. Your thoughts on week one of the
- 23:53Big 12? Yeah, it's a good slate.
- 23:55It really is. And you know, this is part and
- 23:58parcel of the college football. I try to stack the schedule, you
- 24:01know, zero week and week one with as many big games as they
- 24:03can get. In most cases those are non
- 24:06conference games, unlike last weekend in Dublin.
- 24:09But I really think for for Baylor, I really think this is a
- 24:14big game because, you know, they're they're banking on
- 24:18having a revamped defense under Dave Aranda in the second year.
- 24:22We've been talking about the offensive tools they have all
- 24:25offseason. The fact that this is a team
- 24:27where, you know, if things can go right, they have a really
- 24:30legitimate chance to contend. The Auburn's not a a great SEC
- 24:34team by any stretch, but they're good enough to have a really
- 24:39competitive gamer Baylor. And to me, this is a game that
- 24:42Baylor needs to win for two reasons.
- 24:44One, obviously if you're trying to contend for the college
- 24:46football player, winning these types of games helps your
- 24:48resume. But two, more importantly, I
- 24:50think they need to show themselves that they can compete
- 24:53with anybody. You know, that they can they can
- 24:56compete with a like talented team in the SEC, which means
- 25:00they should be able to compete with anybody in the Big 12.
- 25:02So to me, that's the biggest game in the slate.
- 25:04It's kind of a prove it game for Baylor to show me that what I've
- 25:07been thinking of them the whole offseason that they're they're
- 25:10the kind of team that can be a contender.
- 25:12This is a game that can help prove that to me and to them and
- 25:15to everybody else. I could agree more.
- 25:16I think they can win as well, but I'll see.
- 25:18You know, we can mention the game, Cincinnati and Nebraska
- 25:22around these parts. Cornhusker fans think they're
- 25:24going to win. They always think they're going
- 25:25to win. Do you give the Bearcats so a
- 25:27fighters chance there? I mean, what's it going to take
- 25:29here to to win this game? We know it's going to be a
- 25:31decided Cornhusker crowd down there in Arrowhead, but what's
- 25:35it take for Cincy to pull off this upset?
- 25:38Number one, no turnovers. They they can't make mistakes.
- 25:40I mean, Nebraska's by no means a a great Big 10 team, but they're
- 25:45good enough to handle Cincinnati if Cincinnati comes out and
- 25:48makes a couple of key turnovers early in that game.
- 25:50So they've really got to play clean football.
- 25:52I think just as importantly, offensively, they're going to
- 25:56have to get a really good game out of their quarterback.
- 25:59This feels like kind of game where Cincinnati can make two or
- 26:02three really big players in the offensive side of the ball as
- 26:04opposed to be methodical and eating up time.
- 26:08I think that helps them more because it puts Nebraska on
- 26:10their heels. I think that rule finally has
- 26:13that program in a place where there are higher expectations
- 26:16than they've been used to the past few years that can lead
- 26:20A-Team to come out kind of flat in the game like this.
- 26:22Because you look at last year's record, Cincinnati, it wasn't
- 26:25above 500. So you kind of feel like they're
- 26:27an average team. But I think if Cincinnati comes
- 26:29out plays clean football, it's a couple of big plays early, I
- 26:32think that can that can flip the game in their direction.
- 26:35And it's, you know, Scott Satterfield hyped this game up.
- 26:38He thinks it's a big game for that because it's an opportunity
- 26:40for them to make a statement and a national game on ESPN Thursday
- 26:44night. You know, all the other Big 12
- 26:46games are on the plus. So they've got the stage and
- 26:48this is an opportunity for them to show the country that, you
- 26:51know, maybe they're not going to be the under 500 Cincinnati
- 26:54they've been the last two years. I want to go back to Friday and
- 26:57you may we talked about the Auburn Baylor game, Georgia
- 27:00Tech, Colorado, a lot of Georgia Tech love as maybe an ACC
- 27:04sleeper team. I don't think Matt that in our
- 27:07multiple conversations in the in the weeks months leading up to
- 27:10this weekend, we've really focused a ton on Colorado.
- 27:13If I'm repeating myself, I apologize, just give me your
- 27:16take. What have you gleaned from
- 27:17Colorado in the month of August that's either changed your
- 27:20opinion, backed up your opinion? Where are you on the Buffs?
- 27:25I'm not sure where I'm at on the buffs because I'm not sure who
- 27:28they're. I'm not sure who their
- 27:30quarterback is yet. I mean, theoretically it should
- 27:33be the kid from Liberty that transferred in, but they haven't
- 27:35named a starter yet and they've given Julian Lewis every
- 27:38opportunity to get as many reps as possible.
- 27:41That's the freshman. And that's the freshman.
- 27:43That's the freshman, Keaton. Keaton Salter is a kid from
- 27:46Liberty who has a ton of experience.
- 27:48LED them to the Fiesta Bowl two years ago, transferred dead.
- 27:51You know, I theoretically thought, you know, there's no,
- 27:53there's no issue. This guy is going to be the
- 27:54starter. But, you know, I haven't seen
- 27:56Colorado name a starter yet. And that's that's kind of
- 28:00curious to me because Georgia Tech's an experienced team.
- 28:03Remember, they played in Dublin last year and they hit it.
- 28:06They hit it forward a state their butt in the game that
- 28:09we're, you know, basically destroyed for court and state
- 28:11seasons the rest of the way. But Georgia Tech can play on the
- 28:14road. They got a really a quarterback
- 28:16in Haines King. They're talented.
- 28:18They're not going to go in and be intimidated by Colorado in
- 28:22any way. This to me feels like a game
- 28:23where you've got to start your veteran Keaton falter.
- 28:25But until I see how that is, I'm going to shake out.
- 28:29It's hard for me to, you know, really get a good feel for them.
- 28:33I I like their offensive line. I think they've done a much
- 28:35better job of cultivating both an offensive line and a
- 28:38defensive line the last couple of years.
- 28:39So I think they're better shape. They're obviously it's the
- 28:42quarterback play. It's who's going to replace
- 28:44Travis Hunter and Jimmy Hornet wide receiver, along with how
- 28:48they're going to work quarterback situation without
- 28:50Travis Hunter that is going to determine whether they're
- 28:52successful successful this season.
- 28:56You know, for I don't think it's a prove it year for neon in
- 28:58terms of, oh, I've got to prove to everybody that I can coach
- 29:00without my kids. I think it's about
- 29:02sustainability now. You know, they they need to go
- 29:05to a bowl game, they need to win 789 games, show they can turn
- 29:09over talent. You know, is that at their key
- 29:11positions and and significant talent at that show that they
- 29:15can be sustainable for the long term.
- 29:17So we touched on the Avery Johnson family dynamic.
- 29:21It's weird. It's an odd story.
- 29:25You, you just don't see that very often.
- 29:26But does it lead to more questions than just kind of
- 29:29surface? It's just that it's a weird
- 29:31story and and it doesn't mean anything.
- 29:32Or do you read into it more about Avery Johnson, his
- 29:36inconsistency? You know what?
- 29:37Is there something going on? Family dynamics?
- 29:39I I don't know, is there more to the story than just dad and a
- 29:42son getting in a fight? I hope it.
- 29:45I hope it is just that. Just dad and son getting into a
- 29:49fight has nothing to do with Avery.
- 29:51It just the whole thing just seems weird.
- 29:53When I first saw it after the game I was like, this is wrong,
- 29:56right? Like, you know, Avery Johnson
- 29:58got into a fight with a fan or something like that hating, you
- 30:00know, fight with his kid and then we're like oh he did.
- 30:03And I'm like that makes no sense.
- 30:05I mean, I'm hoping that it's compartmentalized from Avery
- 30:09because 1, Avery as a player doesn't need that and two, as a
- 30:15person, Avery definitely doesn't need that because that's his
- 30:17family. And, you know, families fight,
- 30:19you know, I'm, you know, I know families that have had fights
- 30:22happen like that, you know, from time to time.
- 30:25Usually it's nothing more than just a disagreement over a
- 30:28certain thing. But it is weird.
- 30:31I'm hoping it's just like a weird thing that happened to
- 30:33Dublin, you know, just kind of a self-contained there.
- 30:36And it doesn't have any spillover into what Avery does
- 30:38the rest of each year because, you know, I still feel like
- 30:41Avery can be one of the best quarterbacks in the conference.
- 30:44And certainly I think he showed that he that he I saw some
- 30:48things that he he did better from last year to this year.
- 30:51It's just overall the team that didn't play the way they need
- 30:54to. But yeah, it's a weird story.
- 30:56I can't remember the last time a dad and his son got into a fight
- 30:58after a football game. It's just weird you.
- 31:01Know in Ireland, yeah, when the whole country's focusing in on
- 31:05just women's bananas. Sad, quite frankly.
- 31:07Matt Poston's great job as always, Matt, thank you for
- 31:10doing this. We'll talk to you in the weeks
- 31:11ahead. Appreciate the relationship,
- 31:13Matt. Thank you very much.
- 31:15Thanks guys. Appreciate it.
- 31:16Yeah, good to talk to you, Matt Poston's Heartland College
- 31:18Sports. As we check in on the Big 12,
- 31:23it's going to be a hell of a race.
- 31:24Yes, it is. It's going.
- 31:25To be a hell of a race. Did you bet anybody to win the
- 31:28conference? Iowa State, two different times.
- 31:30I got them at 13 to 1 when we were in Vegas and then they were
- 31:32at 16 to one last week, so I grabbed a little bit more.
- 31:35Pre pre farmageddon you bet them yes.
- 31:38Now currently at Circus Sports to win the Big 12, Iowa State
- 31:42has gone from 16 to one last week.
- 31:44To 8. Plus 750.
- 31:47Where Where was K state before the game?
- 31:49Do you remember? Around 5:00 to 1:00-ish.
- 31:51So they were, yeah, taking a lot of play.
- 31:53Now you can get 8 to 1 on the Wildcats if you think they're
- 31:56going to bounce back. Who is I?
- 31:59I bet Utah and I bet Texas Tech. Not by themselves.
- 32:02I combined them with other things.
- 32:03Utah's 5 to 1 Texas Tech plus 525 currently.
- 32:07A lot of love for Texas Tech, That's sketch.
- 32:09Every one of their tough games is on the road.
- 32:11That's happy at Utah. Well, when we get a seven way
- 32:13tie at six and three, you get to figure out the tiebreakers
- 32:15really. At K State and and there are
- 32:18other tough one is on the road as well.
- 32:20All right, we'll take time out. Mitch Holtis will join us next.
- 32:22The voice of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 32:25Miller and Condon talking sports with you on the Iowa Sports
- 32:28Radio Network. I'm Millery Condon.
- 32:33Welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:36Trent Condon, Ken Miller with you until 2:00.
- 32:39Mitch Holt is Papa John's unbelievable special.
- 32:42We'll get to that in just a second or two.
- 32:45Mitch Holt is joins us. He'll join us every day this
- 32:48week with the exception of Friday.
- 32:49And then next week, be on tape as the team travels well far
- 32:53away to take on the charge. Anything going on in the Kingdom
- 32:56here this morning, Mitch? Any, any news?
- 32:58Nothing going on, no, just a boring day.
- 33:01Honestly, this is probably one of my two or three least
- 33:04favorite days of the year, just because you don't get
- 33:08desensitized to the cuts and guys will try to get in it.
- 33:12But it's the three of us being told we're done, right?
- 33:16And you're thinking now what and where do I go and what do I do?
- 33:19And some of the guys will come back on practice squad, some
- 33:23will land on other teams, but many will be just cut into
- 33:26cyberspace and try to figure out what's next either in their life
- 33:29or as a player. So this is a this is a difficult
- 33:32day and we got to be at 53 players by 3:00 this afternoon.
- 33:37And that goes to the hands of what I call a wizard.
- 33:41Brett Beach. I don't know how he does it with
- 33:42salary cap. He knows math better than I do.
- 33:44Brett Beach in the spotlight here the next couple of days.
- 33:47And it's tough for you, Mitch. You get to know these guys.
- 33:49It's tough on the coaches and certainly got to be tough on the
- 33:52GM. It's very tough on him.
- 33:55Now, the secret to the chief success and there's many
- 33:58reasons. And Ken, I'll give you credit
- 34:01here with the with the Broncos, because one of the big things
- 34:03they have going now you have to have the three things aligned,
- 34:07meaning ownership, your GM and the his staff, his or her staff
- 34:12and then the head coach. You've got to be aligned and
- 34:15you're thinking, well, that's the way it ought to be.
- 34:17It's rare when you get it in any professional sport.
- 34:20The Chief, the Chiefs have been the epitome of it, where you've
- 34:23got owner, GM and and coach and stabs of those three working
- 34:28completely in concert. When I asked Brett Reach about
- 34:31it, he realizes it may be the biggest reason to winning 12
- 34:36consecutive years. Big key to our success it's,
- 34:39it's integrating these players from where they were at in
- 34:43college to our system and to our culture.
- 34:45And they're probably a lot of good players throughout the
- 34:47league that, you know, maybe they wouldn't be a great fit
- 34:50here. And you know, there's also
- 34:52probably a lot of players out there that haven't hit their
- 34:54potential elsewhere, but can hit it here and trying to align that
- 34:58that vision with with the prospect.
- 35:00And that's where I really think the the continuity has really
- 35:03paved the way for our success and coach and I have been
- 35:06together since, you know, the early mid 2000.
- 35:11So think about this, Derek Nadi goes to The Jets, doesn't work
- 35:14out. We resigned him.
- 35:15It's one of the biggest. I told you guys last week or
- 35:18maybe even yesterday that the boy that I worried about was the
- 35:215th defensive lineman DB's. Another one that hasn't been
- 35:24resolved yet, but Nicole Hardman gets cut by the Packers.
- 35:27Well, he was great here. I mean, he won a Super Bowl.
- 35:31So. But when you get the flow, this
- 35:34is like a university where the president, the AD and the coach
- 35:37of that respective sport are all flowing in the same direction.
- 35:41And the three of us know that's not normally the case.
- 35:45And it's really rare when you get it at the professional
- 35:47level. Egos, money, a lot of things get
- 35:51in in the way. And I will tell you with Elway's
- 35:53GM there was it wasn't going to happen.
- 35:57You know that you hired Nate Hackett.
- 35:59You get guys that are coaches that are going to be below him.
- 36:02The coach has got to work in concert or, you know, even be a
- 36:05little bit above. And that's what the Chiefs have
- 36:07because Andy Reid and there's no surprises.
- 36:10Andy Reid works year long, day by day with Brett Beach, arm in
- 36:14arm, and that's what it takes to win.
- 36:16Is there someone under an underling, an understudy?
- 36:21Who's Brent Beach, other than Andy Reid?
- 36:23Who does he turn to? Because, you know, as he's
- 36:26getting ready to go through and make the changes on their roster
- 36:28and break some hearts, somebody's got to be scouring
- 36:31other rosters to see likewise, maybe they can bring them in to
- 36:35help the Chiefs out. Who does Beach work with?
- 36:37Who does he trust? Oh man, we have a labyrinth.
- 36:40If I showed you that org chart, there's a lot of folks, gals and
- 36:44guys, and they're super sharp. I love it.
- 36:46Now we've been poached. Ryan Polls is GM of the Bears,
- 36:50he was with us. Brant Tillis is now with the
- 36:54Panthers, he was with us. Mike Borghansi, he's now with
- 36:57the Titans, he was with us. But there's a core.
- 37:00Mike Bradway is outstanding, his dead Terry, long time front
- 37:04office guy, but I could list a bunch of names up and down the
- 37:08Pike. Another guy that no, people
- 37:09don't talk about. If they went out to start a
- 37:11podcast defending the Kingdom, it'd be back in the spring a guy
- 37:14named Chris Shea, who is absolutely a guru.
- 37:18He's a cap guru. He's probably the leading guy in
- 37:22the league as far as manipulating, helping roster
- 37:26cap, how you get it, get it all to fit.
- 37:28And you got to do it with the superstar quarterback and the
- 37:31money that that commands in the cap.
- 37:33So we have all that going for us in it's just it's understated in
- 37:39the fact that you've got to have that.
- 37:41The Lions totally changed the way they're doing business
- 37:44because they got finally alignment between ownership, GM
- 37:48and coach working in concert day-to-day.
- 37:51The Broncos have it now with with Sean Payton and he's got
- 37:55AGM. That patent guy is they're
- 37:58working in concert with the ownership and it's the ownership
- 38:00is not screwed up. So you have to have all that
- 38:03people. You can hate the Chiefs, but
- 38:05they might want to the Chiefs because even if you're an MLB
- 38:09team or an NBA team, the Chiefs become a prototype on how to do
- 38:13this. All right, well, just 30
- 38:15seconds, but we can't ask go get the day let go by without asking
- 38:18about the engagement today. What can you tell us, Taylor
- 38:20Swift and Travis Kelce? Oh boy, I mean that's why the
- 38:25pizza special is 2 large one topping pizzas at 999.
- 38:31Taylor can have one and Travis can have.
- 38:33One so Donaldson new. The only one that knew, but I
- 38:38don't know if we found him yet. He knew, but did he have to go
- 38:42away somewhere? Matt and Tom are out there, but
- 38:44if your friends are mad or Tom, you might want to try to find
- 38:46him. They might be in the Des Moines
- 38:48River swimming upstream. They were first to know what a
- 38:51special, good, good what? About that.
- 38:53How about that day? Yeah, yeah.
- 38:56Mitch, we'll talk to you tomorrow, brother.
- 38:57See you pal. OK.
- 38:58Thank you. Yeah, good to talk to Mitch
- 39:00Holtis, Radio Voice. Kansas City Chiefs does a really
- 39:03good job too for them. It does very popular.
- 39:05You know that he was the one that came up with Chief's
- 39:08Kingdom, that that term originated with him.
- 39:12Did did he 'cause I think when we first started, I called him
- 39:16Chief's Nation once when we first had him on back in the
- 39:19final. I never started and I think I
- 39:21found out. Ben.
- 39:22Yeah, I think he said he corrected me and I think that
- 39:25you then followed up saying it was Mitch the if memory serves,
- 39:30but good for him. I hope he trademarked this.
- 39:32Absolutely. Think of the T-shirts and the
- 39:34money that he's got coming. In from that one.
- 39:36Yeah, No kidding. Good stuff.
- 39:39All right, our number two, we will get into Hawkeyes with John
- 39:43Bowencamp. Players have met with the media.
- 39:45That's over in Dunwhistle. John will take some time to chat
- 39:48with Trent and I in advance of hearing from Kirk Ference.
- 39:51He'll come up at 145 S Bowencamp will have to be a part of that.
- 39:55And then we will go on record. Trent and I will.
- 39:57As far as our NFL, how do we see the NFL season?
- 40:00Who's going to win the divisions, qualify for the
- 40:02playoffs, ultimately win a Super Bowl?
- 40:04Hour 2, Miller and Condon, that's next.
- 40:06Thanks for being with us on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
