- 0:04Hey guys, this is the Daily Ripples, this is Corey, and today is July 19th.
- 0:11Letting go of false pride.
- 0:14The stone.
- 0:15False pride keeps me from receiving the help I need.
- 0:20Ripple unpractical.
- 0:22Today I'll stay open to the guidance from others.
- 0:25I will not assume I already know what I need to know.
- 0:28I will listen, especially to those who have walked the path longer than I have,
- 0:33and allow their experience to shape my choices. Ripple 2 Spiritual. The Father places people in
- 0:39my life to guide and strengthen me. Jesus shows me a life that is open, teachable, and dependent
- 0:45on God. The Holy Spirit works through others to challenge my thinking and lead me towards truth.
- 0:54As I release false pride, I become more willing to receive direction and grow in faith.
- 1:02And when I was reading this, I was, false pride keeps me from receiving the help I need.
- 1:10My son, he's funny, he, you know, he'll, he wants to do all these different sports and like, you know,
- 1:17so we started doing baseball, but like when he started in baseball, you know, we were talking to him
- 1:22and, you know, he was probably talking to his coaches the same way,
- 1:26you know, and they would tell him stuff and he'd be like, I know.
- 1:28I know.
- 1:30And, you know, it was funny because, you know, the first thing,
- 1:32like he didn't want to be in the outfield on first base, second base,
- 1:35third base.
- 1:36He wanted to be the pitcher.
- 1:38But he didn't know how to be the pitcher.
- 1:41But, you know, when people would give him advice,
- 1:43and, you know, I can talk about him because I see me in him more than ever.
- 1:47When people would try to give him advice, he didn't want to listen to it.
- 1:51He wanted to say, I know.
- 1:53And when I talked to him, you know, about things he has no idea what I'm talking about, he immediately says, I know.
- 2:03And maybe that's kind of like false pride.
- 2:09It's kind of like I already know something that I don't know.
- 2:14And the 12 and 12, it kind of speaks on this.
- 2:18It says, on page 57, it says,
- 2:21there was always that mysterious barrier
- 2:25we could neither surmount nor understand.
- 2:30It was as if we were actors on a stage,
- 2:33subtly realizing that we did not know a single line of our part.
- 2:39And so, you know, I come into this and I,
- 2:44you know, at different times I've done things,
- 2:46and, you know, before I do them,
- 2:47I want you to think that I know what I'm doing before I ever do it the first time.
- 2:53I remember when my significant other, you know, when she had her daughter,
- 2:57she was like, I don't know what I'm doing.
- 3:00This is like, you know, the first time being a mom.
- 3:02And I was thinking, you know, and I'm like, you know, I get it.
- 3:05You know, I mean, I was watching this and I was like, man, you know,
- 3:11you know, but I've said something I probably shouldn't have because, you know,
- 3:14she did take it the way I was trying to proceed to go about it.
- 3:17But I said, you know, everybody's first time having a kid is everybody's first time having a kid.
- 3:24That didn't make it any better, though, than the time.
- 3:26I mean, I think, you know, it's kind of the whole thing of me keeping my mouth shut because, you know, that's probably the best place for me anyways.
- 3:36But I think, you know, when it talks about this on page 73 of the big book, it talks about the more than most people, the alcoholic leads a double life.
- 3:47He is very much the actor.
- 3:48To the outer world, he presents his stage character.
- 3:52And man, do I have, I mean, I think I have less than I did,
- 3:55but I mean, I still have some stage characters, right?
- 3:58You know, I got the spiritual Corey.
- 4:01I got the work Corey.
- 4:02I got the dad Corey.
- 4:05I got the Corey that, like, you know,
- 4:07I come off sometimes as this person that used to be bad guy,
- 4:11whatever, and, but, you know,
- 4:15I don't think I'm running as many.
- 4:18I think that's the whole point, you know, right?
- 4:20I'm not running all these different people that I'm trying to be willing with you.
- 4:24That's what I'm trying to do.
- 4:25You know, my ego tells me you're different than me and I'm different than you and all these
- 4:30different ways.
- 4:30And I can pick out from your job to your income, to your, where you live, to, do you have a,
- 4:37do you have a significant other or not?
- 4:39So like, when you tell me things, I'm taking all these things into consideration of what
- 4:44you're telling me to do because maybe I don't think you, you know what I'm going through.
- 4:49And that's been my whole problem. And my buddy, um, my buddy, he told me, or he told me and he
- 4:57tells other people, he's like, you wouldn't know if help was right here in front of your face.
- 5:04And this dude works at a treatment center because these people don't think he's here to help people.
- 5:10You know, and I, you know, I look back on my life and, you know, all these people have been trying to help me in all the different ways.
- 5:19You know, I was talking to someone the other day and I was like, man, you know, they threw the, they threw the book at me.
- 5:24And the book is they've tried everything.
- 5:28And man, the program I'm in, the recovery rooms I'm in, and that is the only thing thus far that's worked for me.
- 5:34But going back to this actor thing, right, you know, and this false pride.
- 5:40When I come into that, like I think about what, you know, part of doing this, doing the work, doing the fifth step, what happens, right?
- 5:49Because on page 75, it tells me this.
- 5:51It says, we pocket our pride and go into it, illuminating every twist of character, every dark cranny of the past.
- 5:59So that tells me I'm about to get all this stuff out and bring my pride down.
- 6:05And that was a big deal for me, right?
- 6:07Because like when I went and did my first fifth step and told another man some of the things that I thought would make me less man.
- 6:16But that's crazy because I have this vision of what a real man is.
- 6:20And I don't even know how to be that real man of that person because I'm not that person.
- 6:25And you're not me.
- 6:27And that's the cool thing that makes us human.
- 6:30It says once we have taken this step withholding nothing.
- 6:36You know, the nothing thing I have highlighted, we are delighted.
- 6:41We can look at the world in the eye because, you know, the way I've been looking at the
- 6:45world is either down below you or up above you.
- 6:48I've never been eye to eye with you because I didn't think we were just alike because I
- 6:53found out different ways that you were different from me because you had two fathers, two moms.
- 6:58I had this and, you know, I was the only child.
- 7:00I was adopted.
- 7:01You don't understand what I'm going through.
- 7:04But the cool thing about the program I'm in, the recovery rooms I'm in, there's one thing that holds us all together.
- 7:12That everybody in that thing has a common problem.
- 7:17And that common problem comes with the same stuff, the same problems, the same hurting of other people, the same ways I did this and this.
- 7:29It's just a little bit different.
- 7:31And a little bit different atmospheres, right?
- 7:34And that's cool because you come in there and, you know, that was the most, the moment, the first time I did this fifth step, I sat in a meeting amongst peers of people that were just like me.
- 7:48And, you know, it was the most freeing thing.
- 7:50And then I went to the grocery store and looked amongst people.
- 7:54Because, man, I think, you know, at some sort of one way or the other, we all have a spiritual malady.
- 8:00Everybody, nobody's perfect.
- 8:02And I just don't like your symptoms, right?
- 8:05Because that's what I come into a lot of things, right?
- 8:07You know, you do something to me, but I didn't do that to you.
- 8:13You know, maybe I did it to somebody else in just a little bit different degree,
- 8:16but, you know, I didn't do that, what you did to me.
- 8:19How could you?
- 8:21But look at everything else I've done in my life to other people.
- 8:25And that makes me sit down a little bit, right?
- 8:27It makes me come to one.
- 8:30Then it goes, we can be alone at perfect peace and ease.
- 8:35Our fears fall from us.
- 8:37Why are my fears falling from me?
- 8:38Well, probably because I'm not scared of what you think I am anymore
- 8:43because you know who I am.
- 8:44And I'm not running for what I did before.
- 8:49I'm one with that.
- 8:50And that's just with one person, right?
- 8:52This step is me just telling one person all this.
- 8:56Oh, and we begin to feel the nearness of our creator.
- 9:00And I think that's important, that line right there, because it skips down to the next paragraph.
- 9:04And it says, we thank God from the bottom of our heart that we know him better.
- 9:08If I'm feeling near to my creator, why do I know him better?
- 9:11Because truth.
- 9:14Because truth, and I've got some of these things, I'm blocked from him too.
- 9:18Because it says in the book as well, it says, we found a great reality deep down within.
- 9:23So that tells me God's deep down within, and I'm trying to get all this stuff out to be
- 9:27closer to this God that's deep down within me.
- 9:29He's not out here in this book, in this place over here, at this building over here.
- 9:34He's deep down within me.
- 9:37I thought that was the most important thing that when I read that and I understood what
- 9:40that meant because I've been looking everywhere.
- 9:43And on top of that, I've been looking in the bottle.
- 9:46I've been looking in the bags for all, you know, and women and job and all these things.
- 9:51And, you know, to find this power that's deep down within, what a cool deal because I've been looking all in the wrong place.
- 10:02And it says we may have had certain spiritual beliefs, but now we begin to find out how to have a spiritual experience.
- 10:09Then it goes on to saying the feeling that the drink problem has disappeared will often come strongly.
- 10:14And that's why I came into the program I'm in to have that problem be removed.
- 10:21and to me in my life it has been removed it doesn't exist
- 10:26I don't think about it anymore and that's a promise you know it is a promise of this
- 10:31of this word um and you know so we might go for a little bit longer um but those you know so it
- 10:38says today I'll stay open to guidance from others um and I when I read that you know I come to this
- 10:45place of like, you know, I think about my sponsor, I think about sponsorship, helping
- 10:50people.
- 10:53In the, on page 101, I'm working with others.
- 11:01It says, in our belief, any scheme of combating alcoholism, which proposes to shield the sick
- 11:07man from temptation is doomed to failure.
- 11:10Those are two big words, right?
- 11:11Doomed to failure.
- 11:13So, and what it's kind of talking about is like, you know, if I'm hiding alcohol from somebody that's, you know, just stopped drinking because how can I hide that?
- 11:24You know, in reality, you know, am I going to keep them from the gas stations, from driving down the street, from the grocery stores to the liquor stores?
- 11:31Can I keep them from seeing any of that?
- 11:33No.
- 11:34And right above that, you know, it says his only chance for sobriety would be at some place like the Greenland ice cap.
- 11:41So, but in a more like deeper way to look at that to me and I do better at it today, you know, because man, when people have problems, I want to tell them, you know, immediately what my experience was because I want to keep them out of that problem.
- 11:58Well, that didn't work too well for me growing up.
- 12:02You know, my parents said, I remember specifically, you know, there's a big hill close to my house.
- 12:08And this big hill, me and my dad went over there and I was very young.
- 12:13And, you know, he said, hey, don't go down that hill.
- 12:18And the first thing I did was I went down that hill when he turned around.
- 12:24And so he couldn't get me before I was already halfway down this huge hill.
- 12:29So when I take an adult and I say, don't go down this way, maybe they do it, maybe they don't.
- 12:40I kind of think about how people I hear in these different rooms and these places say, don't date within the first year.
- 12:49Usually the people saying that also have a significant other, or they're in this different place.
- 12:57But I think it's interesting to think, you know, how many people really did that?
- 13:04Because, you know, when I think, when I read this literature, it says on page seven, or it says, page 69, that's an interesting, you know, word, page number.
- 13:20It says, we want to stay, and it's talking about, you know, sex.
- 13:25It's really, man, it's about personal relationships with another sex.
- 13:28It doesn't have to be with the actual act, you know, the activity of it.
- 13:33It says, we want to stay out of this controversy.
- 13:35We do not want to be the arbiter of anyone's sex conduct.
- 13:38We all have sex problems.
- 13:40We'd hardly be human if we didn't.
- 13:42So, like, you know, I talked to a bunch of guys and, you know, they asked me what I think and I tell them, go for it.
- 13:49Like, who am I?
- 13:52I have a significant other.
- 13:53I get to see every night.
- 13:54I get to go to bed with her every night.
- 13:57Who am I to tell someone how to live their life?
- 14:00And I can't hide them from these different things.
- 14:03I mean, I have some fears, you know, but I'm learning more and more to keep my mouth shut
- 14:09and let them go through what they're going to go through.
- 14:12Because I remember hearing this guy say, you know, it's hard to tell somebody exactly what
- 14:17to do.
- 14:18But if you give them a little bit of like, and they're able to come to this conclusion by themselves, then they might, you know, there's a chance.
- 14:26And like my job as a guy that sponsors guys, I can tell them my experience, but I think it's better sometimes.
- 14:35Not all the time I'm going to give them my experience because they're going to have to go through it.
- 14:39But my main job is to take them through this literature a page at a time.
- 14:44When it says write, we write.
- 14:47When it says pray, we pray.
- 14:49When it says talk, we talk.
- 14:50When it says make amends, we make amends.
- 14:53When it says help others, working with others in different ways, we do that too.
- 14:58And I'm able to guide them on different things that I've done with dudes.
- 15:02And that's the cool thing.
- 15:03That's really the best, the coolest conversations.
- 15:06And the coolest conversations are this, is when my sponsor has told me different things
- 15:11of suggestions of maybe do this, maybe do this.
- 15:15You know, the one hard suggestion my sponsor has made to me
- 15:20was, Corey, get a job in the field that you were working in before
- 15:25rather than go here because you feel safe.
- 15:28That's kind of like combating, you know, me from the real world.
- 15:32Because, you know, if I'm in an institution, you know,
- 15:37that's like a break from society, right?
- 15:40And like, if I don't go out there and actually live in society, I'm just going to be like,
- 15:47you know, kind of shielding from actual, the real world.
- 15:50I was talking to a guy the other night, he was like, what do you think about this?
- 15:53And I said, man, get out there.
- 15:55Get out there.
- 15:56Let's just go see what happens, right?
- 16:00Because to me, an institution is used for one thing, and that is the removal of alcohol
- 16:05from the physical factor.
- 16:07Life is still going to happen.
- 16:10It is.
- 16:10And, you know, so, you know, on the sponsorship thing,
- 16:14my job is to show somebody this work, this literature,
- 16:19and how I, you know, and through that, you know,
- 16:22hopefully they find the same stuff I did.
- 16:26And, you know, because it says on page 100,
- 16:27it says both you and the new man must walk day by day
- 16:29in the path of spiritual progress.
- 16:32I got to do it too.
- 16:36Man, I'm sorry.
- 16:37I kind of ranted for a little while.
- 16:40the Father, it says in the spiritual, the Father places people in my life to guide and strengthen
- 16:45me, and He always has. You know, what's cool about this whole deal is how I can look back and
- 16:52just see how God worked, and it can be nothing but God, because, I mean, there's no way it could
- 16:58have worked any way else. Just the people He put in my life at every single step of this deal
- 17:05is unbelievable, but I couldn't see that in the moment, right?
- 17:08Because I can't see until I can see.
- 17:13But anyways, I think that's enough for the day,
- 17:16and I'm sure y'all are tired of hearing me.
- 17:17But hey, if y'all have any questions about this literature
- 17:22or want to talk about it, it'd be really cool.
- 17:25I'm always open to talk about the work, the literature.
- 17:29If you have any comments on how we can do better,
- 17:33Yeah, email us or some of y'all have our phone numbers too.
- 17:36I'm not going to put that out because that'd be crazy.
- 17:40But anyways, thank you guys for listening.
- 17:42Thank you, Pastor Mario, for editing these always.
- 17:45And it's really cool to be a part of this.
- 17:47I'm really grateful for you and our friendship as well.
- 17:51Prayer.
- 17:51Father, help me let go of false pride today.
- 17:54Through your Holy Spirit, make me open to the guidance you provide through others.
- 17:59Shape my heart through the example of Jesus and lead me into a life of trust, growth, and compassion.
- 18:04Amen.
