- 0:00Let me ask you this, what do anger and a hand grenade have in common?
- 0:05Well, in both cases, you hope that you never have to use it, but if you do have to use
- 0:10it, you better know how, because once you pull the pin on a hand grenade, you either
- 0:14have to use it properly or reinsert the pin under very stressful conditions, or you end
- 0:20up with a whole lot of undesired damage.
- 0:24Said less graphically but more eloquently by Ambrose Bierce, he said, speak when you
- 0:28are angry and you will make the best speech you ever regret, and I would add, so too
- 0:34for the moral life.
- 0:35And what I mean by that, stay with me, I've got a story to tell.
- 0:38Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTague, your host here for The Catholic Current, coming
- 0:43to you from the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network.
- 0:46Let's take a closer look.
- 0:48Glad you're here.
- 0:49I have been making a series of videos reflecting on the seven deadly sins, and one of them
- 0:54is variously called anger or wrath, but anger and wrath can also be good things.
- 1:02We hear about the wrath of God.
- 1:03St. Paul never said, don't ever be angry.
- 1:07He said, be angry, but sin not.
- 1:10So what about that?
- 1:11So we're going to say the good kind of anger is a just wrath, as Aquinas said, and the
- 1:20out of control anger we're going to call rage.
- 1:24So you don't want to rage, but you do want to make use of anger.
- 1:30Well, why?
- 1:33Well, St. John Chrysostom said this, he said, he who is not angry when there is a just cause
- 1:39for anger is immoral.
- 1:41He goes on to say, because anger looks to the good of justice, and if you can live amid
- 1:46injustice without anger, you are immoral as well as unjust.
- 1:52So anger used the right way for the right reasons as an obligation, failure in that
- 1:58righteous anger and that just wrath as Aquinas would call it, that's a sin.
- 2:04And St. Augustine, it has been suggested, links righteous anger with courage and with
- 2:12hope.
- 2:14We've been told that he said this, hope has two beautiful daughters.
- 2:18Their names are anger and courage.
- 2:21Anger at the way things are and courage to see that they do not remain as they are.
- 2:27So anger gives us the energy to protect the weak and the vulnerable, two right wrongs.
- 2:37And St. Thomas Aquinas says that righteous anger, a just wrath, is strongly linked with
- 2:43courage.
- 2:44He said, courage, fortitude, bravery, we think primarily as passive, just holding on, holding
- 2:51the line, persevering, gritting your teeth, but he said that there is an active form of
- 2:58fortitude coupled with righteous anger that he calls a just wrath.
- 3:03And listen to this, he says proactive courage linked with a just wrath, he calls it a holy
- 3:12pouncing.
- 3:13Now, I don't know about you, but I'd be willing to get up early two, three, four times a week
- 3:19if we could all engage in a good, holy pouncing every now and again.
- 3:23I think the world would be a much better place if we engaged in a little holy pouncing when
- 3:30we needed to.
- 3:33So what's the moral of the story?
- 3:36Anger like courage has to have a worthy object.
- 3:39When we feel ourselves bubbling up, when we feel the steam coming out of our ears, we
- 3:43have to ask ourselves, is it really worth it?
- 3:47I have to check and say, do I have a good intention?
- 3:51Am I going to use my anger under the control of reason to build up, to achieve a good rather
- 4:00than to tear down or to destroy?
- 4:03And there has to be a proportionate and just means.
- 4:08You don't shoot someone because he stepped on your shadow.
- 4:12That's rage.
- 4:13That's not just anger.
- 4:16So anger is a powerful tool like fire, like a weapon, intelligent, smart people use it
- 4:25in a moral way.
- 4:29And then there's everybody else.
- 4:32So take some time this week, have an examination of conscience.
- 4:38Where have you popped off?
- 4:40Where have you failed to exercise a righteous anger?
- 4:44And how could you and some of your closest friends engage under God's direction with
- 4:50a good holy pouncing?
- 4:52Think on these things today, take them to prayer and talk about it with those you love.
- 4:57Go in peace and please do pray for me for I am a sinner.
- 5:02Thanks for watching today.
