- 0:47We just witnessed a great weekend of NFL football, weekend of upsets, a weekend of divisional foes and rivalries that just had some really brilliant games coming up with some great records that were set.
- 0:58Ed Cleese joins us tonight to talk about the Week 4 history of the NFL 2026.
- 1:09Excuse me, I can't see.
- 1:12Hello, my football friends.
- 1:13This is Darren Hayes of pigskindispatch.com welcome once again to the Pig Pen, your portal deposit of football history.
- 1:17And welcome our show where we talk about the history of Week 4 in the NFL for the 2026 season.
- 1:24With me, as always, is Ed Cleese.
- 1:26Ed, welcome back to the Pig Pen.
- 1:27Hey, Darren.
- 1:28Ed, you know, it's been a great week.
- 1:30This had a lot of history happen this week.
- 1:33What are your first thoughts here of the week number four of the 2026?
- 1:37Sure.
- 1:38I figured we'd start talking about the teams that are 4, 0 and the teams that are 0 and 4.
- 1:42So where do you want to start, the good or the bad?
- 1:44Let's go with the O and four teams because this is kind of a unique situation.
- 1:48It is a unique situation.
- 1:49As a matter of fact, it's.
- 1:50It's so unique that we have to go back to 1976 is the last time that we had five teams start a season.
- 1:59O&4 this year, of course, those five teams, the Dolphins, Texans, Titans, Chargers and Bucks.
- 2:06And back in 1976, the teams were the Jets, Giants, Chiefs.
- 2:11And then you might note that the other two were the Seahawks and the Bucks.
- 2:16They were both expansion teams in 1976.
- 2:19So that might explain it.
- 2:21If you're wondering how those 04 teams that started 1976 turned out, well, it wasn't very good.
- 2:27The Bucks didn't win a game at all that year.
- 2:30The Seahawks wound up with two wins.
- 2:32The jets and the Giants both wound up with three wins.
- 2:36And the Falcon.
- 2:37I'm sorry, the Chiefs were the big winners.
- 2:40They started 0 and 4 and actually wound up 5 and 9 that year.
- 2:43So nobody wound up having a very good season.
- 2:47But I guess the Chiefs kinda turned it around.
- 2:50And then of course, as we touched on briefly last week, Darren, the only team to ever make the playoffs after starting 04 was the 1992 San Diego Chargers.
- 3:03After that 014 start, they went 11 and 1.
- 3:06They got swept that year by the Chiefs.
- 3:08Their one loss after the 014 start was to Kansas City.
- 3:12But San Diego won the division anyway.
- 3:15They played the Chiefs in the wild card round.
- 3:18They beat the Chiefs 17 to nothing.
- 3:20So they got Their revenge.
- 3:22And then sort of oddly, they went to Miami in the divisional round and they lost 31 to nothing.
- 3:27So it ended with a sputter.
- 3:29But what a run there for the 92 Chargers.
- 3:30And we'll see if any of the teams this year can match it.
- 3:34Yeah, and, you know, maybe this is a year where somebody can match that because three of these teams.
- 3:39And let's take the Titans and the Dolphins out of it because I think everybody sort of knew they weren't going to have, you know, real successful years going into this.
- 3:48I think we talked about it in our.
- 3:50Our preseason draft that we talked about.
- 3:53But the, the.
- 3:55You have the Houston Texans, you have, you know, the Chargers and the Bucks, those are all teams that maybe had a chance to win their divisions and maybe go far in the playoffs.
- 4:05People were expecting a lot more out of them than the 04 records that they have shown so far.
- 4:10Right.
- 4:10And then we can look at the other side is the, the four and O teams that are off to good starts.
- 4:18So the, the most interesting thing to me is that the, the Minnesota Vikings are four.
- 4:25No.
- 4:26And they became the first team since 1934 to start 40 and have two of those wins where they did not score a touchdown.
- 4:38And this, of course, led me down a rabbit hole, Darren, as I like to go.
- 4:42Who was that team back in 1934?
- 4:45That was the Detroit Lions.
- 4:47And get this.
- 4:48I'm just going to rattle these off real quick.
- 4:50Here are the Lions scores.
- 4:52All wins from their first seven games that year.
- 4:55Nine, nothing.
- 4:56Six, nothing.
- 4:57Three, nothing.
- 4:5810, nothing.
- 4:5824, nothing, 28, nothing, 38, nothing.
- 5:02They.
- 5:03They started the season with seven straight shutouts.
- 5:07And get this, Darren, they did not make the playoffs.
- 5:11They started 10 0.
- 5:13They lost their last three games, the last two games in sort of an odd quirk.
- 5:17I'd love somebody to explain this to me.
- 5:18Their last two games of the year were on a Thursday and then the Sunday right after it, both against the Bears, and then the Bears knocked him out.
- 5:27And then the Giants wound up winning the NFL title that year.
- 5:30So the Lions, maybe that's where they started.
- 5:32Their fan misery was way back in 1934.
- 5:35You start 10 and, oh, and don't make the playoffs.
- 5:37Well, remember, they didn't have a playoff back then.
- 5:39All they had is they had the best team in the east, best team in the West.
- 5:42They had just two divisions.
- 5:44That's who played for the NFL championship.
- 5:46So, yeah, the playoffs were a long ways away before we got to that.
- 5:49So I guess I should say the postseason they didn't even make the postseason.
- 5:53Start the season with seven straight shutouts and don't make the postseason.
- 5:57So that was probably of the 4 and O teams.
- 6:00That's really what stuck out with me.
- 6:01We also have the first time that we have since 2013 that we had two non playoff teams from the year before start 40 the next year and that would be this year is the Chiefs and the Vikings.
- 6:14Yeah, and they both are really actually looking good.
- 6:17The Chiefs are looking good on both, both facets of the game.
- 6:22I mean the Raiders really, really tested their defense a little bit and they ended up winning.
- 6:27But you know the Vikings, they seem to be the one sided.
- 6:30Like you said, all defense.
- 6:32But what a defense it is.
- 6:33It's really strong enough.
- 6:34And defense wins championships, as we know for sure.
- 6:38And speaking, we don't probably need to worry about championships this year with the jets because they lost in Chicago this week and they have not won in Chicago since 1997.
- 6:51So that was back when Bill Parcells was their coach.
- 6:53That's the last jets win in Chicago.
- 6:55And another note from that game, Darren, would be the Bears are also since going back to 1997.
- 7:01The Bears are the first team since 1997 to get three wins in the first four weeks with three different starting quarterbacks.
- 7:11The 1997 Jaguars were the last team to do it.
- 7:15Here's your quiz for the week.
- 7:17Can you name the three starters for the Jags in 97 from the Jags in 90 each got wins.
- 7:24Well, I'd have to say Mark Brunel.
- 7:26That's one.
- 7:29Oh gosh.
- 7:29What was it?
- 7:30What was the guy that came up after him?
- 7:35God.
- 7:36Starts with a G, right?
- 7:38I don't know.
- 7:38You got me for a second time.
- 7:41Shane Matthews and Rob Johnson, other two quarterbacks and I didn't.
- 7:47I'm sure there were some injuries in there, which is why it all went down.
- 7:50But this is kind of funny.
- 7:51So Brunel, Matthews and Johnson, this was in 1997, all three of those quarterbacks would wind up on the Redskins 20.
- 8:00In 2002, Shane Matthews was on the Redskins.
- 8:03And in 2003 Rob Johnson was on the Redskins.
- 8:07And in 2004 Mark Brunel was the quarterback of the Redskins.
- 8:12So some weird symmetry there.
- 8:15But the Bears are the first team since those Jags teams to get three wins in the first four games with three different quarterbacks.
- 8:22Interesting.
- 8:23And I guess it's really interesting we got to bring this up because I don't know that this has ever happened before with Case Keenum he plays the first play from scrimmage of.
- 8:33For the.
- 8:35The Vikings and for the Bears and then gets taken out and the other guy comes in.
- 8:44Beijing.
- 8:45Beijing comes in and plays the rest of the game.
- 8:48I'm wondering if that's like a contractual thing, you know, maybe Keenum get an incentive for starting so many games or.
- 8:55But that was just kind of odd that that occurred.
- 8:57They may have been throwing him a bone there.
- 8:59That.
- 8:59That would.
- 9:00That would be my guess.
- 9:01That would be my guess.
- 9:03Moving on to.
- 9:05I don't want to.
- 9:05I don't want to leave this game yet.
- 9:07Because there's something that was really stuck out in the history of the game, and that's the parody of the.
- 9:13How many offensive plays, the defensive plays.
- 9:16Chicago ran 89 offensive plays in that game.
- 9:19New York ran 32.
- 9:21Oh, my gosh.
- 9:22That is the fourth game with that large of a differential since the 1970 merger.
- 9:27So it's kind of an anomaly, you know, anomaly of games to have somebody have that many more offensive plays than the other team.
- 9:36Just dominance, I guess, is maybe the.
- 9:39Jets were doing their fans a favor.
- 9:41We do not want you to have to watch our offense today.
- 9:43Yeah, maybe.
- 9:44Maybe so.
- 9:45Okay.
- 9:46So moving on to another AFC east team, the Bills, now in the Josh Allen era, are 20 and 7.
- 9:54This includes a couple of playoff games, 20 and 7 at home versus the other AFC east teams.
- 10:00But two of those losses of the last two years to Drake May and the Patriots, and those two games in Buffalo this year and last year are two of Drake May's better games.
- 10:11So while the Patriots have struggled a little bit, they look like he might be a little bit of a problem.
- 10:16Specifically for the Bills.
- 10:19Yeah, I think.
- 10:21And.
- 10:21And a lot.
- 10:22He has a lot of the same characteristics that make him successful that Josh Allen does.
- 10:27You know?
- 10:28You know, we know he has a good set of legs.
- 10:30We know he can throw the ball when he has to.
- 10:32And they're both dangerous weapons.
- 10:34And it's kind of almost a mirror image.
- 10:38Not that the same stature, not the same type of player, but the same fears for the defense.
- 10:44Right.
- 10:44Staying in the AFC but moving to the other coast now.
- 10:48You know, that was a really fun game between the Chiefs and the Raiders.
- 10:51That was that.
- 10:52And that felt a little old school, like a little Chiefs Raiders.
- 10:55And the reason, Darren, that it kind of felt like old school is because we haven't seen that between these two teams in a long time.
- 11:02Because the Raiders in the Mahomes era, since Mahomes was drafted, the Raiders are only three and 14 against the Chiefs.
- 11:10And one of those wins was last year when Mahomes was hurt at the end of the year and it was a meaningless game.
- 11:15So really 2 and 14.
- 11:17And in that since Andy Reid got there, going back a little bit further, The Raiders are 5 and 19 versus the the Chiefs.
- 11:26So if Vegas wants to kind of get over that hump, they are going to have to figure out this Chiefs riddle because that really is a very fun rivalry with when both teams are good.
- 11:38Yeah, it definitely is.
- 11:39It's really interesting to watch this dynamic of what's happened with Kurt Cousins being with Kubiak.
- 11:47You know, I think there's like this magic of Cousins has got the fountain of youth in him again and because he really had that offense humming and that's, that's really the only second time I watched him this year.
- 11:57But both times I was kind of impressed.
- 11:59Smart guy.
- 12:00Super smart guy.
- 12:01He, if you put him in the right positions, he's going to move your offense.
- 12:05He's proven that for, gosh, almost 15 years now.
- 12:08It's crazy.
- 12:09Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 12:10Especially to be the second quarterback taken in that draft he was in on the same team.
- 12:15So.
- 12:15Yes, yes, exactly.
- 12:17And there's.
- 12:18They have.
- 12:19And you can write a novel about that whole dynamic for sure.
- 12:25And talking about the two night games, the Sunday night and the Monday night, I've got a little nuggets here.
- 12:30Both involving NFC south teams.
- 12:32That was the first, that was 11 years between Sunday night home games for the Panthers.
- 12:38And I don't think they'd been on Sunday night at all, maybe since 2016.
- 12:41But that was our first home game since 2015 on Sunday night.
- 12:44And they delivered for, for their fans.
- 12:47That was, that was a pretty impressive showing.
- 12:49And Bryce Young looks like maybe he has figured it out.
- 12:52And then speaking of the NFC south and at night, this kind of blew my mind.
- 12:57The Falcons, that is only their seventh road Monday Night Football win ever.
- 13:03Darren and the Falcons have been around since the 60s.
- 13:05Right?
- 13:06Right.
- 13:07So that's only the seventh time that they have won recently.
- 13:10It's been a little bit better.
- 13:12But that's only the seventh road win they've ever had on Monday Night Football.
- 13:15And between.
- 13:16They got zero between 1979 and 2016.
- 13:20They lost a lot.
- 13:21They lost 12 in a row on the road on Monday night over that, over that span.
- 13:27And also, you know, they, they had the 10 year anniversary of the Katrina game against the Saints.
- 13:34The Falcons won and scored 45 points.
- 13:38This week they had the 20th anniversary with the Katrina game.
- 13:42And the Falcons were in there again.
- 13:43They beat the Saints and scored 45 points.
- 13:47So if they have a 30th anniversary, the Saints may ask the NFL to please schedule someone other than the Falcons.
- 13:53Yeah, that's for sure.
- 13:54What some really magic moments there at the beginning of that game before the game started with the coin toss and everything with the, you know, the hero, that Katrina game, being on the field and having some.
- 14:05His difficulties that he's had.
- 14:07But.
- 14:07But what a fan support.
- 14:09And his own team members from that team back 20 years ago, they're supporting him as well.
- 14:15So really, really good stuff there.
- 14:17You know, I'm gonna, I'm gonna go back to the Panthers for a second and Bryce Young, because he is the leading passer, the most yardage in the NFL of any quarterback of all 32 teams right now is Bryce
- 14:29Young.
- 14:30And the guy that's in second place is Jared Goff.
- 14:33And he's.
- 14:34Young's got him by like 54 yards.
- 14:36And it was kind of odd they faced each other that night too, and that's the result.
- 14:40So good.
- 14:41Good for him.
- 14:41You know, Bryce Young really helped my fantasy team this week.
- 14:45Oh, okay.
- 14:47All right.
- 14:48So what else do you have?
- 14:49I'm on the score gummy, if you're ready for it, Darren.
- 14:52Well, let me talk about a little bit, a couple items that I have.
- 14:56First of all, going to that, that Seattle and LA Chargers game.
- 15:00You know, we have the running backs of Seattle.
- 15:05I mean, just unbelievable.
- 15:07Okay, so they lose Kenneth Walker to Super bowl mvp.
- 15:09He's now playing for the Chiefs.
- 15:12The Charbonnet is off injured.
- 15:15He was like their number two last year, very talented back.
- 15:18So they haven't had him.
- 15:20They go to Jardarian Price, the rookie.
- 15:22The first few games, he gets injured, he can't play in this game.
- 15:26And what do they do?
- 15:27They get 120 yards from Emmanuel Wilson, who comes out of there.
- 15:31So just kudos to that offensive line and to the staying power of staying with the run, even when you're.
- 15:38You're down your top players because you have that much faith in your running game.
- 15:43So good job for Emmanuel Wilson and the line of the Seattle Seahawks.
- 15:49Also the Kansas City and Vegas game, we go in there, you know, Kansas City going 4 0.
- 15:55This ties a record.
- 15:57They may be the first to reach four games.
- 16:00And I'm sorry, they went 40 and don't have a sack.
- 16:04Their defense is not registered a sack in three games.
- 16:07They could get that fourth game this week and be undefeated.
- 16:11So that's.
- 16:12That's kind of hard to believe that you could go and your defense doesn't even get like an accidental sack, like the quarterback falls down on a bad snap or anything.
- 16:19You know, that's just crazy.
- 16:21Only three teams have done that before reach three games in a row with that and the Minnesota and Miami game going back to that, you know, we like.
- 16:29I love talking about the tight ends.
- 16:30They don't get enough attention, I don't think.
- 16:32But the Vikings are 40 and with Jeff Justin Jefferson was out.
- 16:37Kyler Murray found tight end TJ Hawkinson who caught 13 passes that came his way.
- 16:44And talking about catching passes, how about CD Lamb was 17 receptions in that game for the Cowboys.
- 16:50And I, I'm sat there and I'm like, wow, that has got to be so some kind of a record.
- 16:54But it is not.
- 16:56There was actually 21 catches by Brandon Marshall for the Broncos in 2009.
- 17:01There's probably about five or six other people that have more than 17 catches in one game.
- 17:06So I don't know where what I was thinking.
- 17:08But still, 17 catches in one game.
- 17:10I think your hands will be tired,.
- 17:12You got to be tight.
- 17:13But just.
- 17:14It's a great game for that.
- 17:15So that's all I have for historically speaking for the week.
- 17:19I think we're ready to go on to score.
- 17:20Gami.
- 17:21All right, so let's start with where we always start.
- 17:23Darren, we were very, very close to a scoragami this weekend.
- 17:31So I'm gonna let you guess.
- 17:32What do you think was the most rare score of the weekend?
- 17:36Well, I'm stuck between two games and I'm.
- 17:38It's almost a coin toss to me right now.
- 17:40I'm looking at that Minnesota Miami game.
- 17:42I'm looking at New England Buffalo game and I think I'm going to go with.
- 17:47I'm going to go with New England buffalo 29, 26.
- 17:50Okay, you're incorrect.
- 17:53Either way.
- 17:53You'd be incorrect really?
- 17:55Because the Minnesota Miami game, the 15 to 10 final, that's actually happened.
- 17:59That was the 26th time that's happened.
- 18:01Really?
- 18:01And 29 to 26, the Patriots Bills game, that's happened 12 times.
- 18:07There are actually four games that are more rare than that this week, Darren.
- 18:11And, and the most rare with the one that was so close is for only the second time in NFL history we had a game end 32 to 26.
- 18:21That was the, the Sunday night game between the Panthers and the Lions, 32 to 26 final with the Panthers winning only the second time that's happened.
- 18:29The last time was just in 2024 when at that time, it was a score of gummy between the jets and the Dolphins.
- 18:36Interesting.
- 18:36Okay, but the other.
- 18:37The other kind of rare games we had 36 to 24, that the giants win over the Cardinals, it's only the fourth time that's happened.
- 18:4524 to 18.
- 18:47The Ravens over the Titans, that's only the ninth time that's happened.
- 18:51And even the 23 to 12 Bears over Jets, that's only the 10th time that has happened.
- 18:57And the reason that 23 to 12 kind of sticks out to me is because that's actually the final of a NFL championship game that you might remember.
- 19:06That would have been in 1965.
- 19:08The Browns.
- 19:09I'm sorry, the packers beat the Browns 23 to 12.
- 19:13And what was significant about that particular championship game, Darren?
- 19:19It was significant about that championship game.
- 19:21That would have been the last one before the super bowl era.
- 19:25Exactly.
- 19:25Yes.
- 19:26The last.
- 19:26That was the.
- 19:27That was 23:12 was the final score in the last championship game before we had the Super Bowl.
- 19:32The Browns were that close to being in a Super Bowl, Darren.
- 19:36And if we talk about the common score, we had a very common score of 17 to 14.
- 19:42That was the packers over the Bucs.
- 19:43That's happened 201 times.
- 19:47However, we've gone almost four years since that's happened.
- 19:51The last one was in 2022, and that is the longest streak since 1960 that we've gone without a 17 to 14 final score.
- 20:02Wow.
- 20:03I wouldn't have thought that either.
- 20:04Well, I think.
- 20:05I think that probably explains the change of the game.
- 20:08There was way more 17 to 14 finals in the early days of the NFL than there have been recently, for probably some obvious reasons with the lower scoring and.
- 20:18And things like that.
- 20:20But that's what I've got for score gummy.
- 20:21And the score gummy index for this week, we had some really low ones and some really high ones, so it kind of skewed it.
- 20:29So this would be 63.75, which is.
- 20:33Out of four weeks now.
- 20:34That's the third most rare.
- 20:36It is not as rare as weeks one or three, but it was more rare than week two.
- 20:41Wow.
- 20:42All right.
- 20:42Yeah, I guess that puts that mean average at a little bit higher number than we would have had.
- 20:48So maybe if we didn't have that one, it was 200 times right in there that probably would have been.
- 20:53Put us into more into that 53 range or whatever it was for those top games.
- 20:58All right, well, very good.
- 21:00And, you know, we love talking about the history here.
- 21:04And we're glad that you could join us today to talk about the history of this past week.
- 21:08We have a prediction show coming up, Ed, with everybody tomorrow.
- 21:12Coming up into Week 5 of the NFL, you can catch that on the Pixie and Dispatch podcast, wherever your favorite podcast providers are shown or on pigskindispatch.com Ed, we will love to talk to you next week about the
- 21:23history of week five and tomorrow about our predictions for week five.
- 21:28See you tomorrow.
