- 0:33Hamster with a blump. Pen Knife for doing quicker,
- 0:41quicker. Oh, welcome back to Hamster with
- 0:43a Blump Pen Knife. The Doctor Who Commentary
- 0:46Podcast. I'm Mark and.
- 0:51I'm. I'm Joe, This is Joe.
- 0:53Hello, Hello, hello. And you're joining us for part
- 0:57four of the Savages. Yes, which originally got 5
- 1:01million. 5 million, Only 5 million.
- 1:04Gone are the heavy heights of Season 2.
- 1:06I know 5,000,000.2 now with us watching.
- 1:12I think that's 5,000,000.00005 point 2 million, I thought you
- 1:24were gonna say. Something I'm gonna say.
- 1:26Anything, right, well. This is all yours.
- 1:28Well, we last left Steven Dodo and the Doctor on the Planet of
- 1:35the Savages. Being gassed.
- 1:37Being gassed. The doctor's being sucked out
- 1:39and he's lost his mind, presumably.
- 1:44Popped into Jano? Yes.
- 1:46And now some lots more dry ice is coming towards them, so we're
- 1:50gonna see what happens in this conclusion.
- 1:51And this is Peter Pervis's last episode as well.
- 1:54That was the question I would like to ask you before we go
- 1:57into episode 4, Episode four, Powerful.
- 2:00Episode 4, Episode four. Well, yeah, because this is the
- 2:03first story with number titles, then you don't have your episode
- 2:08names. Jerry, Jerry Taylor.
- 2:10Jerry Davis was like, I can't be asked to think up episode titles
- 2:14anymore. Do you miss those?
- 2:16Not really, no. I do.
- 2:18I like them for as long as they last, but I wouldn't want to be
- 2:20going into second, third, 4th, 5th Doctor.
- 2:24What if they were always had from Doctor Who for the whole
- 2:2626? Years.
- 2:27Would we the whole 26 years imagine?
- 2:30What story titles would you? Have been Jesus.
- 2:35I don't know. Episode two of The Critch of the
- 2:37Pit would be The Dick Cometh or something like that, wouldn't
- 2:41it? You know what about Tim and
- 2:42Ronnie, Part one. The Saint Dynasty.
- 2:48A bad day for Yurak, I would be called Leave the Girl.
- 2:54What would you call part four of the savages, then?
- 2:58Farewell, Stephen. No, it's more difficult than you
- 3:03think. Yeah, for every fan of.
- 3:04Stephen Jo Davis, My question wasn't going to be about the
- 3:08titles though, it was going to be about Steven Taylor.
- 3:11Well, I think you're quite keen on Stephen, you know, and I
- 3:15don't mean you just want to fuck him.
- 3:17I mean, I think you're quite keen on the character, is that
- 3:19right? Well, he's held everything
- 3:21together for this whole season pretty much, hasn't he?
- 3:25Since he came in, he's been consistently strong.
- 3:29If we got the massacre, which is basically just him.
- 3:32Yeah, like if if he wasn't around, I wonder what I mean.
- 3:37You would have had what Sarah Kingdom would have taken a lot
- 3:41of the story. Or like Vicky, I mean, if they
- 3:45didn't have two companions a lot of the time, what would they
- 3:49have done if they didn't have a Steven Taylor?
- 3:53I just can't imagine. I think the show would have
- 3:55suffered, the show around you couldn't.
- 3:57Run on guest actors to go through.
- 3:59I'd say Steven wasn't in Dallas's monster plan.
- 4:02What and what is the Doctor and Katarina on their own?
- 4:05Doctor and Sarah are on their own.
- 4:07So and then she dies. Then he's on his own for.
- 4:09Yeah, I don't know. Their purpose is single handedly
- 4:12responsible for Doctor Who continuing during what I think
- 4:14it's very. Turbulent period.
- 4:16I think you should give him a lot of credit, yeah.
- 4:18But as well, you know, and I think he's certainly done a lot
- 4:21of presenting. I think he's a very good actor
- 4:24as well. And I think you've only got a
- 4:25guy and listen to his companion chronicles to show he's still
- 4:28got a lot to offer. It's a shame he didn't carry on
- 4:32doing. I mean many acting roles he got.
- 4:37That sweet job over with Billy Baxter, didn't they?
- 4:40Well, yeah. I mean, Blue Peter, it's a good
- 4:43job to have. I'm having a great.
- 4:44Time I read the book, he was fucking off the cars.
- 4:47I'm getting a. He said in that book that he had
- 4:51sex with two of the presenters. I read it myself.
- 4:55That was my direct quote from Peter Purvis.
- 4:58All right. That dirty bugger.
- 5:00Honestly, I remember doing. That's another that in that
- 5:02convention we saw him at, not recently.
- 5:08I've made him some toast, ones, you know.
- 5:10Yes, I know. I saw.
- 5:11Yeah, yeah. It was like you two at the Food
- 5:12Machine and the TARDIS it was. Amazing.
- 5:15It was getting very impatient with the toast machine, so I
- 5:17said Peter, I'll take mine. I think he's got a bad hip.
- 5:20Is he? Do you have a hip replacement?
- 5:22Young man anymore, is he? But do you think this is an
- 5:26adequate exit for Steven? And because I was reading a
- 5:30quote before we went into this episode where Peter Burvis was
- 5:33saying he didn't want to go. He was very happy to continue.
- 5:37And I think he did struggle to find work afterwards, which is
- 5:39why that blue pill job coming when it did was a stroke of
- 5:42luck. But you know, I do think that
- 5:47Ben and Polly did bring an injection of sort of youthful
- 5:51vigor to the show and the ratings started climbing.
- 5:55From the 10th planet onwards, the ratings started climbing.
- 5:58I think it's not a bad exit storyline for him.
- 6:03It could have been worse. He could have suddenly wanted to
- 6:05marry Nanina. Like like he could have just
- 6:09suddenly come out of nowhere. Like that children, wouldn't
- 6:12they? Yeah.
- 6:12So I think the cause that he that this reason that he stayed
- 6:16to do that, I think no, no other companion had done that before.
- 6:19I don't know. Maybe Susan in a way, but not
- 6:22really. Susan wasn't taking over the
- 6:23earth, but she was helping rebuild the earth in a similar
- 6:27way. I mean, she got both.
- 6:28She got the marriage and the rebuilding the earth, but no one
- 6:32else has really come close. All the other companion X's
- 6:36maybe apart from Katarina have been a bit rubbish just suddenly
- 6:40been married off. Have you seen this dreary bunch
- 6:43on the planet as well? The savages?
- 6:45I mean, I wouldn't really hang it around with this bunch for
- 6:46the rest of my life. Let's start episode 4 and we
- 6:49shall continue as we shall see what happens.
- 6:50So loose are. You scared I'm going to exhaust
- 6:53all the conversation in the first exhaust?
- 6:58Oh, such a witty fault. Is this the episode where you
- 7:02got, you know, my deal? There's something very
- 7:05satisfying about destroying something that's evil.
- 7:07And the Toto goes yes, that bits.
- 7:12Someone telefilmed that bit, you see.
- 7:14Of course, out of all the stuff they filmed some good bits,
- 7:17didn't they? She's absolutely vicious with
- 7:19that ax, I tell you. And here we are on this amazing
- 7:21set full of smoke. Down down the gassy tunnel, you
- 7:26know before. I discovered I had a gluten
- 7:29intolerance. Oh my gosh.
- 7:30I had a very gassy tunnel, didn't I?
- 7:35Look at William Hart, though? I mean, he's doing it well.
- 7:38He's having a bad photo. Maybe it's just a bad photo.
- 7:41Maybe that's all it. Is it?
- 7:42Could be a What do you mean? It's a bad photo?
- 7:44It's a photograph of what was going on.
- 7:46No, but it's in movement, isn't it?
- 7:48That's true. That photo, that William
- 7:50Hartnell there, leaning up against the thing, that's when
- 7:52you open your camera phone and it's on you of when you do it.
- 7:57That's what it is. You're not wrong.
- 8:01I hate that, you know, because you don't get the angle right
- 8:03and you feel your chins get the camera the wrong way around.
- 8:06It's painful and God, it don't snap it straight away.
- 8:09You got to get the lighting right.
- 8:12Oh, if any. William Hunter was alive in the
- 8:14time of selfies. Oh my God, he wouldn't have any.
- 8:17He wouldn't. I'm a legitimate actor off the
- 8:20screen and stage. Excuse me Sir, could I have a
- 8:23selfie? Heather, take the Take the
- 8:26photo. 30 pounds is my child. Oh, we'd rake it in.
- 8:33But I think he's back in the action now.
- 8:36No, he wasn't. He wasn't on all the.
- 8:37He wasn't, No. It's just something I was trying
- 8:39to work out. I'm.
- 8:40Giving him please. That's why.
- 8:42But you say he's an old man. He's a younger man here than
- 8:45Paul McGann is now. Exactly, yeah.
- 8:48And I've seen Paul McGann, which goes to show what a great actor
- 8:52he was. Toby Haydock said to me that he
- 8:55thinks sort of 55 then is a bit like 70 now.
- 9:01Yeah, that is true. Older men were older men, Yeah,
- 9:05absolutely. Everyone looks, yeah.
- 9:08It's like, yeah, you see those things, footage of like, I don't
- 9:13know, there's people in the 70s even like when we did the The
- 9:16Neighbors commentary and Madge from Neighbors was like 30, but
- 9:19she was dressed like and looked like 50 or 60 and she, you know,
- 9:23isn't. It because I tell you what I
- 9:25tell you what I think nowadays younger kids, kids look older
- 9:31than they are because they dress up.
- 9:33But I think older people look younger because older people
- 9:37dress younger. Well, there's more like, I don't
- 9:40know, cosmetics and things back, you know, than back then.
- 9:45I mean, if William Arnold could get his all his teeth done back
- 9:48then, I'm sure he would have had his veneers done like Katie
- 9:51Price or whatever you. Know directly between Jordan and
- 9:58William Hartnell and Heat Magazine William Hartnell Doctor
- 10:00Who spotted with Katie Price down Arley.
- 10:03Street getting his veneers white.
- 10:09That's still where we all want to hear.
- 10:12Oh dear. One of these days, there's going
- 10:14to be a fabulous scandal around Doctor Who character in there.
- 10:17Doctor Who Actor What from the past or?
- 10:20Present current, Current. No, actually there is some
- 10:22current one, isn't it? No.
- 10:23Clark. John Barrowman?
- 10:24No, NJN, this is the Battle Savages show.
- 10:27Sorry, I what do you think is all this set these?
- 10:33In this forest kind of stuff, because you just saw the dodo
- 10:36and the doctor being while taking the sort of the comatose
- 10:38Dr. into this cave. Yeah, it's not bad.
- 10:43I've seen better. I've seen worse.
- 10:46It's better than Kinder and worse than Creature from the
- 10:49Pit. My two I always give, you know,
- 10:52because Kindle was very artificial and Creature from the
- 10:54Pit always looks very convincing.
- 10:56What do you think of people trying to colorize the 60s?
- 10:59Stories hang on. We've got some new.
- 11:00Pictures of moving Stephen. That was really good.
- 11:04I love his hair. His hair.
- 11:05His hair is fabulous, doesn't he?
- 11:07I think his hair is the best in the story.
- 11:09We miss out on some really good hair, apart from that person in
- 11:11the basement that's got this and he's watching.
- 11:13I just want it on record right now.
- 11:16He looks absolutely sexy and I would lick his ass on with this.
- 11:19Oh my God, please. I'm so sorry.
- 11:27Just for the people that take note of that sort of thing, You
- 11:30know, what the hell is that? It's like a thingy gun.
- 11:32It looks like one of those things you put money in on the
- 11:34beach to look out to sea. Yes, I've got some very weird
- 11:39helmets going on as well. And here we've got the Doctor
- 11:42being again. Still taken through.
- 11:44It's still quite slow, isn't it? He's not sweet.
- 11:47Look, look, he's got his curl behind it.
- 11:50It makes such a difference that he hasn't got his tie on, his
- 11:53tie done up he looks. So I don't know why.
- 11:56It's really unusual. To see the Doctor casually.
- 11:58Very more casual. This is what he casually gets, I
- 12:01think. No.
- 12:03Oh wait, in this Space Museum when he's in his undies, Oh God,
- 12:07remember. Oh my God.
- 12:08Do you think that photo exists somewhere?
- 12:10The full actual is actually him. No, you're not buying it.
- 12:13No. Imagine if that is out there
- 12:15somewhere in like full. I think it only exists on what
- 12:18we see on the TVI. Don't think there's someone out
- 12:20there has got that negative. But you know, I think what's
- 12:23interesting about this last episode is it is breaking with
- 12:25conventions because you get the guard character and he does have
- 12:29a change of heart, doesn't he? And he does help them out and
- 12:32you've got Jano, who's got the Doctor's mind inside of him.
- 12:36And he is part of the climax as well.
- 12:39Whereas Skip forwards to the macro Terra.
- 12:40What was the big fat guy in that Hola?
- 12:43The God? He doesn't turn good by the end
- 12:46of he, no. I'm not.
- 12:50I'm not going to, you know, make a statement and say exhaust is
- 12:53one of the most exciting characters.
- 12:55We don't remember these characters, do you?
- 12:57Here he is now, the Nina's tending for him in The Cave.
- 13:01Yeah, it's a shame that these, because there are other stories
- 13:05where those guest actors, those guest characters are very well,
- 13:10obviously it's J O's. Lain off.
- 13:13I can't see it, you know, someone said who said it
- 13:17definitely. Is Claire Jenkins?
- 13:19Are you Tony? Maybe she's a different one.
- 13:21Maybe that's not Nanina. I'm getting confused now.
- 13:24Toby I don't be tearing his hair out right now but they're
- 13:26getting all the details from you know, it is it's.
- 13:29I'm not going to do that thing that he really hates and that's
- 13:31going off to investigate. We'll take it as written that
- 13:37she was you. Know she's got.
- 13:41Oh, I see she's got the stick up to the guards.
- 13:44Is it E now she has the relationship with or exhaust?
- 13:46It's exhaust. Strange name take all name.
- 13:51You've got detail here as well. These these in The Cave.
- 13:54It's not just The Cave, you've got these cool carvings on the
- 13:57wall. It's quite good set.
- 14:00I'm going to take a punt and say that I think Christopher Barry,
- 14:03this is during the period where he still knew how to direct.
- 14:06Because I'm telling you also downtime recently and there did
- 14:09come a time when he completely forgot how to direct, but yet
- 14:13it's not talked. When you talk about Christopher
- 14:15Barry and all the stories that he's directed, it's not talked.
- 14:18About behave yourself. Look at the rest of those
- 14:20stories I know. Brainomorbius.
- 14:22The Demons, The Daleks. So in terms of stories, so in
- 14:26terms of scripts, is this his weakest story that he was given
- 14:30to direct? I think he does a good job from
- 14:34what we can say, I think, but in terms of the stories.
- 14:38Yeah. Yeah, I'd probably say so.
- 14:41Well, stuff like Brain and Morbids has got such vivid
- 14:44imagery, even on the page. What they written down here?
- 14:47Oh yeah, a futuristic set and a cave and a forest.
- 14:53Are you going to like that? Exciting.
- 14:54Well, this is very much. There's a lot of walking up and
- 14:56down caves and Brain and Morbius in very similar fashion
- 14:59actually. Do you know, I was looking up
- 15:01the composer Raymond Jones before this?
- 15:04He didn't do much of the music, you know, which is a shame
- 15:06because he's very good. He's got his strings out quite a
- 15:11bit. Don't look well, does he?
- 15:16I just can't get over him not having a tie.
- 15:21You know when he went out for a Curry with Ferris Lambert and?
- 15:25What was his name? The director, Warren Hussain.
- 15:27He probably looked a bit like that then, You know, I think I
- 15:33know why this story isn't very well remembered, why I think
- 15:36it's sort of mired in cliches. You know, the rich leaching off
- 15:40the poor savages versus the posh people quarries.
- 15:47Like what really stands out here.
- 15:50I know. I'm not saying it's bad.
- 15:51I do think it's a fun story. There's some more moving footage
- 15:55that we've got there. Well, I think it's this
- 15:57impression of this mind swap idea.
- 16:01You know, it gets about 10 minutes and screens interesting.
- 16:05I would choose this if it existed, or I would choose to
- 16:09listen to this over some other sixty stories, like maybe the
- 16:13Space Museum or something like that.
- 16:15Oh, it keeps leaping into life. I know every time it leaps be
- 16:19like we made a terrible mistake, we all forgot that it exists.
- 16:25You know when you stare at me and my heart skips a beat?
- 16:28That's exactly what happens when reconstructions leap into life
- 16:32like that. But William Harnell?
- 16:33He's back. He really is on form here.
- 16:36Yeah, he's really, he really is that strong.
- 16:39I don't buy that. Like he was strong.
- 16:41He's weak. No, like he was strong in
- 16:42episode one. It's just he had.
- 16:44But is that because he hasn't been given these bits to do he's
- 16:47had? No, he's had a bit of episode
- 16:49off. He's not relentlessly having
- 16:52every week speech, speech, speech.
- 16:54He's got a bit of time to sit in bed with Heather Hartnell and
- 16:56not do your script. I think when he gets the
- 17:00opportunity, I when it's on the page, he's really trying to
- 17:04impress that. Remember the end of episode?
- 17:07Is it two or three of the war machines where he steps up in
- 17:09front of the war machine? And he's never looked more
- 17:12commanding and he's basically saying this is still my fucking
- 17:15show or I and I'm the best. I wonder if if the seasons
- 17:19weren't as long if they'd made, you know.
- 17:22Well, they did that like, yeah, if they went to that model, if
- 17:26they went to that model, now he and he'd be able to manage and
- 17:30you have like you work six months, six months off.
- 17:33They almost he would have been able to continue it if they.
- 17:36Just started the younger. Sort of more energetic.
- 17:40Patrick Trout and and they nearly fucking killed him by the
- 17:43walk. Patrick Trout and couldn't have
- 17:45done it. And that's when they went, oh,
- 17:47actually, maybe the way we're making this is wrong and Pertway
- 17:50comes along and goes, well, I'm going to go off to IB for twice
- 17:54a year, for six months, he's off clubbing.
- 17:56So you've only got me for half a year.
- 17:58It is a shame, isn't it? Because he could have just done
- 18:00a little bit more and then there would have been a bit more time
- 18:04maybe on the script, I suppose. I don't know how it worked, but
- 18:07maybe it must have had to have a certain amount of episodes a
- 18:11year to make it work or the money or whatever.
- 18:15I don't know. You'd lose.
- 18:18Or you just have shorter stories.
- 18:20You have two two-part 2 parters. You realize you're eliminating
- 18:25Doctor Who here. I know.
- 18:27But then if the quality goes up and you get more William
- 18:29Hartnell. Yeah, that's true.
- 18:30That's all these what ifs but. Then if we have more William
- 18:34Hartnell, we'd have less Patrick Trout.
- 18:36We might not have Patrick Trout at all, though.
- 18:39His hair is a terrible disarray in this episode.
- 18:42Not not as much as Chow, leader of the Savages, but it's pretty
- 18:47bad. You always say.
- 18:51You know when William Hartnell's got lots of humor.
- 18:53You know when he goes? It'd be.
- 18:55Very, very dangerous. And did I just feel like I wish
- 18:58it was my granddad's, you know, or just my daddy?
- 19:08So what do you think of you and Solon and Planet of Evil then?
- 19:13He's pretty scary in that. He's pretty good in that, I
- 19:15think. No, you're talking about
- 19:16Frederick Jaeger. Oh, sorry.
- 19:19Yeah, sorry. He's the sensible 1, isn't he?
- 19:22Yes. Give the order.
- 19:24It's that one, yeah. Oh, here we go.
- 19:28We've got heart and all facing up against Jano now, so is he
- 19:31basically talking to himself? No, they aren't their own
- 19:35people, they've just got these elements of the personalities,
- 19:38haven't they? It's just rubbed off for now.
- 19:41I think the Doctor is still the Doctor, but now Jano has bits of
- 19:45the Doctor in him whole. Another story.
- 19:53And that is the rudest line ever to be asked on the Hudson of a
- 19:58Blum Pen knife. And the last thing we want to
- 20:00think about is Frederick Jaeger and William Martin having sex
- 20:02together. Good grief.
- 20:05Oh no. Look exhausted.
- 20:07Take a little. Bit off.
- 20:08I think we've said this before in episode one.
- 20:10They're very Dominator like costumes.
- 20:11The guards, aren't they? They're a dominator meets a
- 20:14rowboat man, basically. Don't say Dominator is too loud.
- 20:17All right. We'll be listening.
- 20:22Stephen follows. Stephen's going around doing.
- 20:24He's firing everyone. He's worth some bloody Nissa.
- 20:27Really, He is loving. This Stephen and Nissa, they're
- 20:30that's who you don't want to give a gun to.
- 20:32It's a massacre, a little bit of a blurry tellist.
- 20:37I think those helmets look a bit like the robo men, you know,
- 20:40I've literally said that already.
- 20:42Have you? I really don't listen to you.
- 20:44You are not listening to me at all this time.
- 20:46You're too transfixed on these amazing performances from the
- 20:49savages. John Cura's work is.
- 20:52Beguiling me. I'm going to try it there
- 20:56though. John, your tease.
- 20:57Ready. I've got to do a commentary on
- 21:00the Wedding of River Song next week.
- 21:03I'm going to try and get 60 still images of the Wedding of
- 21:06River Song and try and tell the story.
- 21:09I could do it, do you think with any of the any of the stories
- 21:13that have been I suppose animated doesn't really count,
- 21:16but ones that have found that the telestamps have ever been
- 21:19misleading or anything, I wonder what the most sort of
- 21:25misleading. Fear from the deep.
- 21:26There was no telesnaps where they all had long arms like Mr.
- 21:29Tickle, like you had in the animation.
- 21:31No Who? How can a telesnap be
- 21:34misleading? Well, like just you don't really
- 21:36know. You can't see the actions, you
- 21:37can't see the mannerisms. And, you know, somebody might
- 21:40sound like they're doing something, but it might be
- 21:42something completely different. And change the whole emphasis of
- 21:46that scene. You just don't know, do you?
- 21:49I like it's just having all those unknowns.
- 21:51There is any other show that is poured over like missing
- 21:56episodes, so I poured over for the missing team much.
- 21:58Detail, Yeah, yeah. But.
- 21:59And do you think there's another fan base that does this?
- 22:02Probably not to this extent. Like, has anyone ever caught you
- 22:08watching a reconstruction? And you've had to be sort of
- 22:11going Oh yeah, I'm watching still images of Doctor really.
- 22:16I don't in fact. Oh my God when you on Mark's
- 22:19podcast to watch you. When Sarah Tube was doing these
- 22:22she found them interminable didn't she?
- 22:24Because she used to modern day TV there, isn't she?
- 22:28She really enjoyed and the stories which just tell us that.
- 22:31I think savages came across well.
- 22:33Did she know that one? Yeah, but then when the story
- 22:37started moving gunfire, she weren't impressed.
- 22:42Come rain or sign, shine, Sarah Chu were like all the stories
- 22:47with a terrible reputation. Yeah, that's what happens.
- 22:51You just a time flight. Did you like that?
- 22:52It wasn't bad. Yeah, there you go.
- 22:57What's going on here? Who's that man there?
- 22:59He looks like Stephen Muffet. Did you see him with the black
- 23:02hair? So we coming up to the climax
- 23:05now where Steven is? Well, the lab's going to get
- 23:08smashed up very soon. So does Jano just say that's it?
- 23:12Our dreams of being superior beings are over.
- 23:16We need to be kind to the savages.
- 23:19I think that's a conscience, doesn't he?
- 23:21Because of the the moral. He gets the morals, doesn't he?
- 23:24Well then, is this the story where the Doctor has the most
- 23:27influence on the planet while he leaves his companion and two?
- 23:32He literally gives his mind to the evil ruler.
- 23:35It's Jano's fault. That is true.
- 23:39That is true. Could you do that?
- 23:41If you could take on someone else's mind for a bit, you know,
- 23:43just sort of a top layer, no no. Why are you looking at me like
- 23:48that? My mind's not that diseased, you
- 23:50know. You'd have a wonderful time with
- 23:52my mind in your ears. Did I ask Stephen Morphe?
- 23:56What's that character's name? Not really.
- 24:00I never knew you were in the 60s.
- 24:02Doctor Who? Oh, that's right.
- 24:04He's saying you really. It's an evil machine, a wordy
- 24:07climax, isn't it? I don't have that.
- 24:09There's not too. I mean, there's a smashing up at
- 24:10the end and everything, but there's not a great.
- 24:14I feel like it's quite a quiet revolution in a way.
- 24:18Not really a revolution, is it? Not really bloody enough.
- 24:21No, you're right. And it's not really sort of, you
- 24:24know, you know, you're thinking about teens smashing the
- 24:26machine, you know, bringing down.
- 24:28The authority figures that's done more in the Crotons, isn't
- 24:32it? Yes, when you have the students
- 24:33going into the museum and literally smashing machines,
- 24:37Yeah, here we go. All this equipment is being
- 24:40smashed up. Yeah, dodo the wash dodo.
- 24:43The doctor's got a stick. Jesus.
- 24:47They're. A lot of them.
- 24:51We're going to need this technology if I'm taking over.
- 24:54Do you think this was the one take thing to smash everything
- 24:57up like and Barbara in the city of Morphos in the Keys of
- 25:00Mariners, where she misses the look?
- 25:04At that dope. Jesus, she's going to push that
- 25:06glass coming so far. She's like, finally some action.
- 25:11I always wanted to be one of The Avengers.
- 25:16That chair's gone flying through.
- 25:19Jesus Christ thing. Oh, why?
- 25:22Can that person with the city film be filming this place?
- 25:24No, exactly. Yeah, it's all collapsed.
- 25:27It's been completely annihilated, you see.
- 25:29This is where it could be misleading on television that
- 25:31but it could have looked really rubbish.
- 25:32No, I like to pretend it looks amazing.
- 25:34Oh, we got a little bit of. Foot.
- 25:36Here we go now. Yeah.
- 25:38Oh, look, there's there's some watch.
- 25:40Toto with that Crow Bar really knocked out William Martin with
- 25:44that. Do you?
- 25:45Remember that sequence at the end of The Visitation where
- 25:48Janet Fielden smacking the gum Tera Leptil with the gum?
- 25:51She is in the patch on dodo in this.
- 25:53Did you see her? I didn't realize how many cine
- 25:55footage bits there are from this.
- 25:59Oh, I wish Dodo had been more violent.
- 26:01She could have been the ace of the 60s.
- 26:03Who you calling small, Being up a Dalek?
- 26:08You up on my night? She never you up to?
- 26:10Sorry. That's got some poor bloody
- 26:12actor in there. Jackie, stop and it's still
- 26:20going on. Not sure what's going on now.
- 26:22Steven moves across to help defend Jano.
- 26:25Oh, there we go. He's like, no, no, don't hurt
- 26:28him, please. All right.
- 26:30He now sees the Doctor and points the gun at him.
- 26:33I'm sure this is very useful to everyone and now we're coming up
- 26:35to this Steven's decision very soon.
- 26:39His noble decision to take over the Planet of the Savages, It
- 26:43could have been called planet decision, but we've had that
- 26:45already, haven't we? Yeah, what was it you said?
- 26:48Goodbye, Steven. God, you weren't fingering up
- 26:51these tiles. I'd have called it, you know,
- 26:55the departure of dooms. Here we go.
- 26:59They're asking Steven to to keep stay on the planet.
- 27:04So now Hartnell delivers the lines and he goes, well, my boy,
- 27:07you know. You know, I think you'll do a
- 27:09good job here. Whereas, you know, the second A
- 27:11said car, they're like going fuck off then Peter, you leave
- 27:15me like everybody else. You know, he didn't a lot of
- 27:18people go in, did he? Well, no, because everything's
- 27:20changing around him and he's. I think he quite needed that,
- 27:24didn't he? I think he knew his time was up.
- 27:27I don't know. I know I do.
- 27:28At this point I think he knew. But then is this, Do they have a
- 27:31recording break here? Is this summer holiday time?
- 27:35It's the war machine is the end of the block, and then it's
- 27:39still got another one to go. And apparently he didn't like
- 27:42these sort of young, hip swinging 60s companions today,
- 27:47so I think it's just new people. He didn't like the tone of the
- 27:49show either, the fact that there was such murder in it.
- 27:52Now, whether to be fair, there was a fair bit of murder in
- 27:55Doctor Who. That might have been a
- 27:57convenient excuse. I I do think it's, I do think it
- 28:03is a good thing that he cared about the integrity of the show.
- 28:07I don't think it's a good thing that he took it out on the
- 28:10production team Well, if they're being, they're not doing their
- 28:14best, then he's going to tell them.
- 28:16Yeah, but you're you do have what you're doing there
- 28:19encouraging workplace bullying. Well, I don't know if it was
- 28:22that bad. I like how so much time is given
- 28:27to this discussion because it could have been worse.
- 28:30It could have been. I've decided to stay.
- 28:33After all this. He literally could have put the
- 28:34crowbar down and gone, right. I'm staying.
- 28:37And look, I love the way that Dodo sort of really throws
- 28:39herself into his arm and he grabs her head.
- 28:41That's the way I grab You're worried just like that look?
- 28:45Yeah. Oh look Jay, it's got changed.
- 28:48It's given that. I don't know if that's because
- 28:49there's not enough plot, but it's given the discussion, it's
- 28:53given the wrap up that. I do still think it feels like
- 28:57it feels quite brief. It'll be a couple of minutes.
- 29:00That's not like Ben and Polly. They weren't even in half their
- 29:05last story. That's not like in a bar.
- 29:06Wow. Dodo next, they mean.
- 29:08A bar for 10 minutes? Yeah, she's hugging Steven.
- 29:10And be like I could have had a better dodo hugging Steven here.
- 29:14He's more of a goodbye for Dodo than it is for her in the war
- 29:17machines. Yeah.
- 29:17In fact, she might as well just. Why did you stay with him?
- 29:21Just stay there. The two of them there.
- 29:22Yeah. And then the Doctor lands meets
- 29:24Polly. Polly does that weird nose thing
- 29:26in the office. This is my secretary.
- 29:28And then he could have gone off there.
- 29:32Yeah. Why didn't Dodo stay?
- 29:33There have been Queen of Savages with Stephen.
- 29:36That would be amazing. It's moving again, yeah.
- 29:40Well, I must say, young man, you've got yourself a nice
- 29:43little position here, haven't you?
- 29:48There's lows moving now there's the most clips moving in Episode
- 29:534, isn't there? Handshake between the Doctor and
- 29:57Steven. That's lovely.
- 29:59In fact, look at that. It's exactly the same shot you
- 30:02got in Planet of Fire with the Doctor and Tolo.
- 30:06Tolo tolo, oh, and dodo's. Come along, my dear.
- 30:12It's time. We're off.
- 30:13It's very similar, isn't it? Yeah, might as well be shot for
- 30:17sure. Oh no.
- 30:18She's touching a red look. Everyone's sort of violating
- 30:21dodo in this episode. One of my.
- 30:26She ended up with an STD. She got used to being touched.
- 30:30They go off arm in arm. Actually, this is all very nice,
- 30:33isn't it? This is all very sweet.
- 30:37Did we actually see Steven again or?
- 30:38No. That was it.
- 30:39He looked around and then looked back and off he went onto his
- 30:42thing. I mean, he didn't even pick up
- 30:43hifi. He didn't get his stuff from the
- 30:45TARDIS. It's Panda.
- 30:48Oh yeah, he took it into the TARDIS.
- 30:50He could have gone back. No one ever goes back and gets
- 30:52this stuff from the TARDIS. It looks like the machines have
- 30:54started working again. Well, I think that, yeah, things
- 30:58against Steven will sort it out, don't worry.
- 31:00Look at that gorgeous shot. I don't know why.
- 31:01I love shots of the TARDIS from above like that.
- 31:04That looks gorgeous. Christopher Barry, You've earned
- 31:08your money. He does well, yeah.
- 31:11And that's it. That's just the ending.
- 31:13Todd is taking off. Oh yeah, next week, the warm
- 31:17machines. So I think people should give
- 31:20this another go, even if it's just listening to the audio,
- 31:23even the target book, you know? And hopefully one day no.
- 31:30But just to know the story because just people just don't
- 31:33know the story. I don't.
- 31:34Think, is this out as a soundtrack with linking
- 31:38narration? Yes.
- 31:39But Peter Pervis? Yes.
- 31:41Wow. Listen, I'll say that.
- 31:42Do you know what? I do?
- 31:43Like the reconstructions, but I think I prefer those
- 31:46soundtracks, you know? Well, yes, it just depends what
- 31:50I mean. Hopefully one day this will be
- 31:52animated, or that person in the basement will be fed up of
- 31:54watching it every night and want to give it out.
- 31:57But until then we've there's a few ways you can.
- 32:01Why is it in a basement? I don't know.
- 32:02I just. That's how I imagined them.
- 32:04Well, some evil super that was sitting in their basement.
- 32:06Well, with all the story and all these films that, well, it's not
- 32:09just going to be in their living room, is it?
- 32:11If it's so secret and precious, maybe it is.
- 32:14I don't know. Well, look, we have to find
- 32:16three reasons to recommend the Savage Dog that mean it's going
- 32:18to be hard. We'll start with you.
- 32:20The guest performance of Frederick Jaegerbaum.
- 32:26I think he does. He's, and he's, he's a forgotten
- 32:31adversary, isn't he? Yeah, in a way.
- 32:33But the way that he takes on the personality of the Doctor, it's
- 32:37something that hasn't been, what do I say?
- 32:39Adversary, Adversary. Whatever, whatever.
- 32:42Well, you know how people always have a go at you for
- 32:44mispronouncing me? I know we always do.
- 32:46Podcast you watch you. I think if I'll start your
- 32:49education now, by the time we get 20 years later, you'll be
- 32:54able to say everything perfectly.
- 32:55I was at the end of your first thing.
- 32:56That was my first. OK.
- 32:58I am going to say Raymond Jones's music, which is very
- 33:01distinct. It's all woodwinds and strings,
- 33:04and I like the sort of tinkling music when they're exploring the
- 33:07city at the beginning, and I like that da da da.
- 33:13Crazy strings when the drama hits.
- 33:16It's it's very unique sounding Doctor Who story.
- 33:20I'm going to say the writing for Dodo.
- 33:23She's really written well in this.
- 33:25I mean, if you've only maybe seen that, you know the
- 33:28Celestial Toy Maker episode where she's written as a
- 33:30complete child, child and you're like, oh, she must be the most
- 33:34annoying companion ever. She is rolling that dice all
- 33:38over the place and everything. Then watch this, give this a try
- 33:41because it really does show what her character can do her
- 33:44exploring that city in episode one or not.
- 33:47You know, not taking everything for granted that they see around
- 33:51like Steven does. Actually, it's the beginning.
- 33:52She's the one that notices something's going on and wanders
- 33:55off into the laboratory. Laboratory.
- 33:59Laboratory, not laboratory. Are you ready?
- 34:03Your education continues. Laboratory.
- 34:04No. Laboratory.
- 34:07Laboratory just pronouncing strange.
- 34:09Laboratory. Anyway, it's the writing of
- 34:12Dodo. OK.
- 34:14And Joe, I do think as they go along, they're getting better at
- 34:17writing her. Because I think in the art and
- 34:20the special, she is written young and then she starts having
- 34:23some fun in the gunfight. Remember that line She goes,
- 34:26I'll have a bash when she's on the piano and yeah, and that
- 34:30she's very useful here. And may I'll say very
- 34:33destructive at the climax. And the way that they write her
- 34:35out in, Oh no, sorry, forget that.
- 34:40In the war machines, it's just, Oh no, that was a joke.
- 34:47What's the joke? So they didn't give her a good
- 34:49right? Sorry, I thought I was missing
- 34:51something. I mean, she is written out,
- 34:55Polly says. She says she'd like to stay with
- 34:57her, aren't in the country and thanks for the inventions.
- 35:01Terrible. What's that mean?
- 35:02Where? Who wrote Ian Stuart Black?
- 35:05Right in The War Machines? So again, is your scene for
- 35:12Dodo's leaving done yet? Next question, See ya.
- 35:18What's that mean? No, that was a terrible story.
- 35:24I did not explain that very well, But you can imagine that
- 35:26like, this is really great. We just need that last scene.
- 35:30You're probably all as apple as I am.
- 35:32I know what I mean. My second thing then is.
- 35:37Because I think that some of the nuts and bolts of this story are
- 35:42quite cliched, running around a quarry and stuff like that.
- 35:45I do really like the psychological angle of the
- 35:49Doctor imprinting on Jano. And I think the sequences where
- 35:53he's really struggling with the two personalities would have
- 35:56been really interesting to see. In fact, it would have been a
- 35:59bit like Frederick Jaeger playing Professor Sorenson in
- 36:02Planet of Evil, struggling with two personalities, which is what
- 36:06he does. He must be like, why is it every
- 36:08time I'm in Doctor, I'm skipped. So fucking Frenic, what's that
- 36:13word? Too much, don't I, On this?
- 36:15Anyway, back to you. I would say it gives Steven the
- 36:20send off that he deserves king of a planet.
- 36:23He is a king. King.
- 36:25He is a king. King of a planet.
- 36:29He is a king. He is a king.
- 36:30Yeah. So I'm glad that they did give
- 36:33that time and they thought about it a bit.
- 36:36Okay, they didn't think about it loads.
- 36:38Do you think he was a benevolent ruler?
- 36:41I think he got stuck down to it straight away, yeah.
- 36:44Yeah. What sort of world do you think
- 36:46he created? I think a very nice peaceful.
- 36:48Sort of. Post technology, yeah.
- 36:49I think because he knows his science.
- 36:51He's a space pilot. He knows what's.
- 36:53Going on, I've never mentioned it.
- 36:55It's his first story, but it's as I say, they could have just
- 36:58married him off or something. That's true.
- 37:01I mean the only other thing, unless he was killed off, you
- 37:04wouldn't really. Not another death, not another
- 37:07one. In season three, that would have
- 37:08been another one. No, you couldn't have done that.
- 37:13So I think at least they've given it some thought compared
- 37:17to everyone around them. That's fair.
- 37:20Well then, the final. I would like to say Christopher
- 37:23Barry's direction, but actually I'm going to reserve my final
- 37:26spot for the Governor, William Hartnell.
- 37:29We've had a lot of discussion of other First Doctors in this
- 37:32commentary, but there is only one, and whilst he's written out
- 37:38of episode 3. He gets to be very funny.
- 37:42And first of all, he's sort of the investigator always
- 37:45wandering around with his reacting vibrator in episode one
- 37:48and doing his sort of, you know, scientific exploration, these
- 37:53people, a great time of peace and prosperity.
- 37:56Then he gets to do is, you know, that's one thing you haven't
- 38:00thought about that I will oppose you and defeat you.
- 38:03I know that's the second time I've done that.
- 38:04But anyway, he does moral indignation brilliantly.
- 38:09Then episode 3 gets to have stroke, which looks very
- 38:12convincing. And then in episode 4, even in
- 38:16his weakened state, he has great authority.
- 38:18And then he gets that touching moment with Steven at the end of
- 38:21the story where he shakes his hand.
- 38:23He's marvelous. William Hartnell, you have not
- 38:25been bested. I know you can't hear this.
- 38:27We ain't got weed sports, so we can't contact you.
- 38:29But you're still the governor, yeah, I agreed.
- 38:34Agreed. Agreed.
- 38:37Agreed. No, you agree?
- 38:40I'm just saying agreed. Yeah, that is.
- 38:46And I think everyone should give the savages a try as a
- 38:49unexplored Hartnell. I hope you all have as much fun
- 38:54with it as we have. Can I just ask you one question
- 38:58before we go very well. Well, where are we heading next?
- 39:01I don't know. In our.
- 39:02Host of a blunt penknife journey?
- 39:04I don't know. I've got a feeling, you know,
- 39:06you and I are going to be watching a Jodie Whitaker
- 39:09episode. Oh, OK.
- 39:10Featuring recently cancelled Krishnoff great, Recently
- 39:14cancelled John Barrowman. Brilliant.
- 39:17Not recently cancelled, No Clark.
- 39:21Revolution of the Daleks. Let's give it a go.
- 39:24Well, I think this is a bit of a divisive episode.
- 39:27Do you? Are you positive about it?
- 39:29Oh, I am positive about it, actually, you are.
- 39:31Yeah. I can't wait after what you just
- 39:33done with the savages. I can't wait to see what you do
- 39:35with that one and shout out to the person that did the cine
- 39:38footage back in the 80s of this. If you're still around, let us
- 39:42know. Have you got anymore, you know,
- 39:44well done for doing that. And can I just say absolutely.
- 39:47Do you know who else is a king? John Cura.
- 39:49Yeah. Let's just say thank you to
- 39:51John. Cura, thank you.
- 39:52John is still with us. No, thank you, John.
- 39:55Cura, taking those snaps, I know you were distracted at points.
