- 0:53to encourage you, if you've not already, to pick up your copy of
- 0:56Slime Incorporated. It's my first ever full length attack novel. It was truly
- 1:02inspired by my love of detective fiction and some real life events. It's a
- 1:07detective story told against the backdrop of the Autaho Governor's race, and it mixes
- 1:11a bit of a classic style with some modern feel. I think you'll enjoy
- 1:15it. It's available as an ebook, a paperback, and now as an
- 1:19audiobook through audible dot com or through the iTunes store. Well, now it's
- 1:23time for today's episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. The original air in
- 1:29eight January twenty eighth, nineteen fifty and the toititle is the Hairpin Turn Get
- 1:38This and Get It Straight. Crime is a sucker's road, and those who
- 1:41travel it wind up in the gut of the prison of the grave, this
- 1:44time a fireball too handy with a target pistol. Let me down a rocky
- 1:48road, past a sleazy money grubb it or curly headed cops. And it
- 1:52might have gotten worse if I hadn't slowed down at the hairpin turn. It
- 1:57happened like this from the panel. Aimon transfer, outstanding author of crime fiction,
- 2:01comes his most famous character in the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. Now,
- 2:16with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe, we bring you tonight's exciting story,
- 2:21the hairpin Turn. Hey, stop it, put down that gun and listen
- 2:36to me. How do you like that? And if you could think just
- 2:42half as straight as you could shoot, I'd have nothing to worry about.
- 2:44But you can't, and it's high time you realize. Now there's the house
- 2:46buzzard. Somebody's up at the house and this is Miles. I'm all right,
- 2:52I'll answer it. I'm expecting a man from the office. But as
- 2:54soon as I finished with him, you and I are going to have a
- 2:57talk, young mad Do you understand I shait, Oh, what's the use?
- 3:08Yes, I'm Philip morlow to see mister vanamininek Vanamin, I have an
- 3:13appointment. Oh, come in, Marlow, i'man ak vianamin. Oh glad
- 3:15you're here. Step this way, will you're talking to study? Okay,
- 3:20mister vannamon I, uh I thought those those were pistol shots. Yeah,
- 3:27that's okay. My niece sounds like a squad of marines. She's a champion
- 3:31pistol shot. She's converted one of the garages into a target range. Well,
- 3:36I seem to recall a city ordinance that says I know all about that
- 3:38dance, mister Marlow, save your breath. I was just like that precisually
- 3:42sit down, please thanks. Breaking the city ordinance is a perfect example of
- 3:46all the crackpot things that headstrong young fool insists on getting mixed up in.
- 3:50You want me to get mixed up with the crackpottery. She has no more
- 3:53sense than her choice of male companions that she does in her hobbies, and
- 3:55she's a very rich girl. Now, look, if this is a bodyguarding
- 3:59a sign in, Mister vanamon Ky has been going with a man named Cliff
- 4:01Lace and unsavory type at least professional horse player, I think, And it
- 4:05was quite an affair. Was quite an affair. That's right. She threw
- 4:09Lace over for a new love recently. Hello, I've never met She's serious,
- 4:14but refuses to tell me anything about him. So Cliff Lace doesn't like
- 4:16the idea because, from his standpoint, a very good thing has slipped through
- 4:19his fingers. He's going to do something about it, and I don't know.
- 4:24Since about the time they broke up. A man's been snooping around the
- 4:27ground here, Marlow. Really, he's about forty short, greasy looking.
- 4:30He has a flatty kind of face, with fat lips and with large black
- 4:33mole on the right side of his nose. Hey, I mean know that
- 4:36character, mister Vanamon. I'll have to check to be sure. I want
- 4:41to know who he is and why he's been hanging around here. Also,
- 4:44I want to find out all there is to know about Kay's new man.
- 4:46Tell me how old is Kay, mister Vannermon. She's twenty six. That's
- 4:50her picture there, Oh blonde fireball. Look, mister Vannermon. If she's
- 5:00maybe her love life is none of your business. He is my business.
- 5:02I'm her guardian and I'm very fond of her. But she's reckless, stubborn
- 5:06and erratic. Yeah, well, money's great, but it will never replace
- 5:10the old fashioned parent man. It's also a big responsibility, you know,
- 5:13No, not first hand. I know it leaves one open to every crooked
- 5:16scheme in the book. Hey look, Marlow, I've written my personal phone
- 5:19number on this card. Who can reach me there privately at any time?
- 5:24All right, mister Vannamon, I'll see what I can find out. I
- 5:31got in my car and I crossed the two acres of tailored flora the Venamin's
- 5:34called front yard. I could see, in fact, the squat windowless brick
- 5:39building topped by a skylight that housed the target range. And a minute later
- 5:43I drove out through the big bell at gate in the sunset boulevard, just
- 5:46as Cave Vanamon streaked past me in a sleek new nash. I was sure
- 5:50I knew already who the snoopy little man who had been hanging around was the
- 5:55description of flabby faced, fat lips and mole fit tight on a guy named
- 5:59Mutt and somehow an issue of private detective's license and somehow managed to keep it.
- 6:05He was just about his ethic. It was a stab in the back.
- 6:09I remembered he had an office in a fire trap on Bronson, So
- 6:12I made that my first stop. Climbed a flight of docks, smelly stairs
- 6:15to a tire door Mark Palmroy Private Investigations. Hell, there was no answer,
- 6:21so I tried the door. Somebody beside Mutt had been there ahead of
- 6:27me, turned the place inside out. It was a shambles. I spent
- 6:31five minutes going over his files, scattered like leaves in November, and was
- 6:35still at it when the door behind me swung shut. Something chum, Hello,
- 6:42Mutt, what's the big idea? Tang up my joint? Marlowe?
- 6:45Hey, you know better than that. I wouldn't touch the stuff you keep
- 6:47on file without rubber gloves. Real funny. If you didn't do this,
- 6:53then who did. I came in and found it just like this. One
- 6:56of your clients must have gotten a little careless. You're full of them,
- 6:59toned. I what do you want here, marlow I need little help,
- 7:01Mutt, No kidding, okay, chunce Glad to help out a brother Sleuth
- 7:09any time at all. Now, what's your problem? Why are you so
- 7:15interested in the v place? Oh? Yeah, quite a chunk of real
- 7:20estate that got there. I know. What's the fascination, A little simple
- 7:24investigation for a simple little lady. For purposes of conversation? What do we
- 7:30call it? How does the Stelle suit look? Malo? You got in?
- 7:35Free, take the scraps and be happy. Okay, as you put
- 7:40it, the Venamin zone quite a chunk of real estate we might subdivide.
- 7:44You might like to tell me how this is Stelle ties in? Yeah,
- 7:47I might. At that jum she's worried about a guy. And from what
- 7:53I've seen of that jet propelled blonde named Kay Vannerman, she's got plenty of
- 7:57reason to worry. Guy's name wouldn't be Cliff Lace, wouldn't Griff Flames.
- 8:03I don't remember Morrow, Okay, Matt, how much is it going to
- 8:05take? Well, now that's hard to say. I'll have to let you
- 8:09know. You see, I've got an angle on my end too, my
- 8:11little clients, who is up and down? There's no other woman involved,
- 8:16but you know, the Estelles are always the last. You're beginning to smell
- 8:20Pomroy And just how do you fit Morrow, I'm helping a guy worry about
- 8:24a girl. Well, that's really nice. And when your clients were the
- 8:28wrinkles make dollar sign. So you're always right? Is that it? Thanks
- 8:31for everything? I'll see around. Well, don't go away mad, Oh,
- 8:35of course not. That's why I'm leaving now. It took a friend
- 8:46at the phone company all of ten minutes to locate Cliff Lace's address for me,
- 8:50which turned out to be a snug bachelor's nest bungalow style at the foot
- 8:52of the Hollywood Hills, numbered forty three hundred Cherimoya. I parked, started
- 8:58for the front door, and on the way it's an open window where the
- 9:01silhouette of a man at the telephone was cut into neat slices by a Venetian
- 9:03blind. But his voice came through in one piece and you couldn't miss it.
- 9:07You see. Still I know almost all about you. Oh yeah,
- 9:11yeah, I got your name earlier tonight from a mutual friend, mister Mutt
- 9:16Palmroy. Yeah. I think it's about time we got together full of a
- 9:20business conference. Huh. All right there at the plaza and say two hours,
- 9:26you'll still be registered as Ruth Bridges. Good goodbye? Still well he
- 9:33hung up. He moved over to a bottle of Johnny Walker's Scotch. I
- 9:35waited until he helped himself, and then I went to the door. Yeah,
- 9:46my name's Marlow. Mister Lace like to talk to you. What about
- 9:48whatever it was you were looking for when you ransacked Mutt palm Roy's office.
- 9:52Tonight? Do I come in? Yeah? Yeah, of course, but
- 9:58I'm afraid I don't know what you talk about it O, come on,
- 10:01we both know that Solia. Let's forget it and go on from there just
- 10:03a minute. Oh but I'll call him at the drop of her head.
- 10:09Make it easy on yourself. Sh what's mud Pummela? You bag of worms?
- 10:16I want to know who he's working for. The fact that you had
- 10:18to break into his place to get information should let you out. So who
- 10:22is it? What makes you think good now because you found what you were
- 10:24looking for? What's the tales? Last name? Cliff? Do get around?
- 10:31Don't you break them? Yeah? Yeah I do, only sometimes not
- 10:33fast enough. Look Buster, I want a chance at the door. Somebody's
- 10:37got his finger caught in a buzzer. Yeah, okay, I told you
- 10:43I stopped by to deliver something. I'm telling you for the last time.
- 10:48I don't care what I have to say to you. All shot from the
- 10:50rooftops. We're through washed up now, get out of my life and stay
- 10:54out cheap good evening, Miss Vanamon. I don't know, but keep out
- 10:56of this now you listen. I'm in love with boys, Neelie, really
- 11:01in love this time, and I tend to marry him and I won't have
- 11:05married boys me. Don't be ridiculous, Cliff. I'm warning you, if
- 11:09you'll get this, you'll never marry boys nearly. That's one thing I'm sure
- 11:13of. I know a lot more about him, you dude, darling.
- 11:16Believe me, when the time is just right, you're gonna hear from me
- 11:18again. But love, why you filthy? If you try to do anything
- 11:22to hurt boys on me, Cliff, play so help me, I'll kill
- 11:26you. I mean it. Sometimes she's gonna throw that temper at me just
- 11:33once too often? Oh your kidding? Lace? Ever see her use a
- 11:37target pistol? Ah, she's too smart, that trumperone sound kind of I'm
- 11:41not worried. H Well, will we, mamma? We were looking for
- 11:46some answers, which I just got. Good night, Lace, keep your
- 11:50head downe the way things were breaking, I was sure if I didn't get
- 11:58to the woman named the Stell before laced it, I wasn't going to get
- 12:01anywhere, so I spent the next hour folded up on a phone booth,
- 12:03running down the list of respectable and semiso hotels with the word Plaza out of
- 12:07four or raft. Finally, a flute voiced night clerk and Amid Victoria number
- 12:11called the Royce Plaza confessed that they had a Ruth Bridges, which was the
- 12:16name that I'd heard Lace mention she was registered from Santa Monica, but at
- 12:20the moment out I was convinced that she was really a steale my Palmroy's plan.
- 12:24So I drove over to the hotel and invested five bucks for the night.
- 12:28Clerk picked up a newspaper and waited. Half way down the sports page.
- 12:31A prim brunette came in. It would have been pretty without the overload
- 12:33of nervous strains snapped on her face and she crossed the deserted lobby. The
- 12:37clerk gave me a nod, so I called a name, caught up with
- 12:41her at the foot of the stairs. You called me, Yeah, if
- 12:45you could spare me a minute, miss Bridges, I'd like to talk to
- 12:46you. What do you want? My name is Marlow, I'm a private
- 12:50detective, a private detective. Yeah, look, honey, let's move over
- 12:54into the corner. You know that boy on the desk is going to sprain
- 12:56his neck if we don't. What do you want with me? Well,
- 13:01I suppose we start off with your real name is still what's the rest of
- 13:03it? Neely? Maybe? Huh? How did you know that? It's
- 13:07taking me early evening to get it. That's the only way it figures.
- 13:11That's right, isn't it. You're married to Boyce Kneeling. Yes, I'm
- 13:15missus Boyce Kneeley. But what business is that of yours? That's why I'm
- 13:18trying to find out. You hired MTT Palmroy to check on your husband because
- 13:22you're worried about him. Right? Why Boys is in trouble? He well,
- 13:26he's in a jam, that's all. Is it? Money? No,
- 13:28Boys does very well. He's in real estate in Santa Monica. Oh
- 13:33maybe with a law Yes, yes, I'm afraid. So. He's been
- 13:39acting so strange. He wouldn't talk to me or anything. I just had
- 13:43to find out what was wrong. I see. Well, look, what's
- 13:46your connection with Cliff Lace. I don't know any Cliff Lace. Oh come
- 13:50on, baby, take you a little easy to try again, Cliff Lace.
- 13:54I know you call him tonight, and he called you all right.
- 13:58He wanted to talk to me about about boys and some girl named Kay Vanermon.
- 14:05But it's crazy, I know it is. Voice is not mixed up
- 14:09with another woman. It couldn't be. I hope I meet your husband soon,
- 14:13missus. Neelie had like to punch him in the nose. What do
- 14:16you mean? Palmroy was right? These tales are always the last to know.
- 14:22Look, do me a favor. Will you go up to your room,
- 14:22go to bed and get some sleep. You're gonna need it, all
- 14:26right, thank you? It's tomorrow. Hey, Buster is a phone right
- 14:35over there? Good book? Mm huh oh yeah, yeah great. Chandler's
- 14:41no one you know? Chandler. Chandler. M h Where have I heard
- 14:50that name before? Hello, mister k No, she's not Marlow. I
- 15:01want you to forget whatever else you're doing and find her immediately. What's the
- 15:05matter. She left her about fifteen minutes ago in a pury. Where was
- 15:07she going? I don't know for sure. She left shortly after you did
- 15:11tonight. Then she came back about an hour. I know, I know.
- 15:13I ran in well, what happened this time? She got a phone
- 15:15call from Cliff Lace. Something was said about him now being in the driver's
- 15:18seat, whatever that means. She was curious. That's not good man,
- 15:20I'm and believe me, which wors than you think. You've got to stop
- 15:22her because when she left here, Marlow, I'm quite sure she had her
- 15:24target pistol with her. I hung up the phone, ran out to my
- 15:31car and headed back to the Cliff Lace's bungalow on Cheri Moya. But Kay
- 15:35had a fifteen minute head start, and at that hour and her frame of
- 15:37mind, to drive in from bell Air was a hop, skip and a
- 15:39jump. The only hope was in Lace himself being smart enough to know that
- 15:43he'd overplayed his hand. The street was deserted when I pulled in and poked
- 15:46down the hill from the place. When I got to the front door and
- 15:50found it unlocked, I keased it open and went in. The living room
- 15:54was dark, but there was a light on in the bedroom, and I
- 15:56started for it before I saw the bulk of a figure ringing against the dark
- 16:00side of the frame. Come on in, shall make yourself at home.
- 16:03What are you doing? Him? Much? Easymorrow? There's no hurry.
- 16:07Now there's not school's out, chum, Where's Lace inside? It was nice,
- 16:12clean, accurate, and exactly dead center. He never knew what hit
- 16:18him in just a moment. The second act of Philip Marlowe. But first,
- 16:33for a moment, let's look at the headlines on CBS has entertained Tomorrow
- 16:37Night. First, East is east and west is west. So Jack Benny,
- 16:41on his way to New York, hasn't yet heard that the subway fare
- 16:45is a dime. Second, Charlie McCarthy, already in New York, rewrites
- 16:48Henry Fonda's tough talking Navy officer in Mister Roberts. And Third Andy of Amos
- 16:55and Andy released from bail jail and Abigail gets into New hot Water. Besides
- 17:00these, you'll also find headliners Eve Harden, Red Skelton, Horace Height,
- 17:04and all the other great Sunday Night shows on most of these same CBS stations.
- 17:08Tomorrow Night Now, with our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the
- 17:14second act of Philip Marlowe, and Tonight's story The Hairpin turn a small neat
- 17:29hole front and center at this for it said that Cliff Lace had been shot
- 17:32a bit and everything from jealous motive to target pistol method pointed directly to Kave
- 17:37Vanaman, but that was still a long way from proof, and there was
- 17:40Mutt pomroy on Hay, I kind of always figured only one way, the
- 17:45right of the Dulla sign. Now, let's not jump to any dumb conclusions,
- 17:48Marl, like what like to look on your kiss and that wants to
- 17:51know what I'm doing here that I can explain. I got Cliff Lacey's name
- 17:56from you, and a sawber to the right guy gave me a rundown on
- 17:59him the character analysis, so I figured he was the guy who frished my
- 18:04office to find out who I was working for. He must have tagged me
- 18:07out of the vanam and place, followed me down to my joint, then
- 18:11turned everything inside out until he ran across something that added for him, something
- 18:15like the name is tell Neely. Maybe you move fast, yeah, when
- 18:19there isn't too much crowding. I've got most of it already, Pomeroy,
- 18:22So spill, spill. I don't know what you mean, Marlow. I
- 18:26mean that Astell nearly hired you to find out why her husband was worried.
- 18:30You come up with an answer, all right. It was called other woman.
- 18:32So Estelle didn't even suspect anything about another woman, and you didn't tell
- 18:34her what you found out because it was Kay Vanam and a guy with a
- 18:37million bucks? Right or wrong? Whose You're right? Marlow? What are
- 18:41you getting at a possibility that you could have done this? Kill Lace?
- 18:45Why? Because Lace was playing the same game that you ure chum blackmail.
- 18:51Your motive was money and so was his. Plus the fact that he didn't
- 18:53like Kay giving him his walking papers, so when he wouldn't come to terms
- 18:56with me, I killed him as that is? Yeah, it could be.
- 19:00Can you prove otherwise? I know I can't, But other things can
- 19:03Marlow? Things? Yeah, like that lipsticks cigarette and the ash straight behind
- 19:07you. It's my brand and I don't drop hairpins on the cop. But
- 19:12when I killed, do I go on? Or you just trying it for
- 19:15size because you hate to think of a gorgeous item like young money bags?
- 19:19Could be it? Right or wrong? Marlow? You know leveling with you.
- 19:25Pomeroy takes a kind of talent and can cash a seven dollar bill at
- 19:27a bank. Oh you're calling the cops. It's the customer. Wait,
- 19:32wait, look, don't be a sap. What will that get you a
- 19:34killer? Maybe? Yeah, I'm from there on A pat on the head.
- 19:37A well done from the law gets smart, chum. Shielding a murderer
- 19:40is a lot healthier for the bank account the naily one every time, get
- 19:42your hand off the phone. Okay, go on, louse it up,
- 19:48boy scout. Who knows, maybe some bright day you might even run for
- 19:52all of them and Marrow without your votes. I'm sure homicide Chargerbacker Sides is
- 20:00a da waiting for you. Forty three hundred Cherimoyer name's cliff lace occupation questionably
- 20:04was shot the idea? Who did it? Marrow? Yeah, poor little
- 20:08rich girl named kay Vanaman or her sweetheart one mister Boyce Neelie who lives in
- 20:14Santa Monica. Yeah, where's the fit? I don't know how long ago
- 20:19was this lace killed? Thirty forty minutes wine Neely's clear we picked him up
- 20:23his own home by than two hours ago. He's in a pokey Now what
- 20:26did you get him on? Hit and run a month ago? It's a
- 20:30legacity knocks an old lady out of a cross walking into a hospital without even
- 20:33starting to watch your bounce. Some anonymous tips to phone the dope in around
- 20:37six tonight, said the repaint job on Neeli's car would prove it. It
- 20:40did. So that just leaves this Venoman by bo Yeah. I guess so.
- 20:45But you know, Becka, come here quick on the backyard there.
- 20:49I'll call you later. Backer, we got company. Keep the lights,
- 20:52Palm Ryan, stay down, don't worry. Ride way along time. The
- 20:55house is the only way out, all right, watch it from the front.
- 20:56I'll go through the kitchen and out the back door. I play it
- 20:59close, but remember, Palmroy, nobody gets triggered. Happy, Okay,
- 21:18come on, baby, your corner back there. Talk up. Who's that
- 21:22Philip Marlow, the guy you saw here with Cliff Lace earlier at night.
- 21:26I'm also a private detective who's working for your uncle and trying to keep you
- 21:29out of trouble. Now, let's have the target pistol, Baby, come
- 21:32on, throw it in. I don't have one, Uncle, Lenox says
- 21:34different. He told me you left the house with it, told you I
- 21:37don't have one. All right, come on, but slowly, hands high,
- 21:42No jokes. I always lose my sense of humor right after murder,
- 21:45after Hey Lace was shot to death. Never mind the Cathley arched eyebrows.
- 21:52You're in too deep, honey. You don't think I had anything to do
- 21:55with Cliff Lace getting killed, are you? Oh no, No, it's
- 21:57all one great big coin incidents. Huh, I said, why don't you
- 22:03leave? Well, how about it, mister Morton. Go ahead, I
- 22:10won't try to stop you. If you're guilty, you won't get very far.
- 22:14All right, all right, potm Roy. What's on your mind?
- 22:19A partnership, chum? Based on what? Chum? Based on the fact
- 22:26that I saw you kill Cliff Lace? Fat you what? Yeah? I
- 22:32saw you standing over the body with a smoking gun. Come on, come
- 22:36on. You don't think you can really make that stick to you? No,
- 22:37but it would keep you busy explaining for a while, long enough for
- 22:41me to wind up my business. Uh m hmm. Well, Marlow,
- 22:45what'll it be you and me as partners doing business with old Enig vannermon On
- 22:51behalf of the niece. I'm sure you'll want to protect or me in business
- 22:53for myself. Well, which it'll be partner's okay, chum, Let's get
- 23:03inside and clean up. The lady was kind of careless around the edge.
- 23:07Hey, hey, they split. How far does it go fifty to fifty.
- 23:11Fair enough, fair enough after you film, Now get that cigarette button
- 23:21a hairpin on the copper there. Then tell Sergeant Becker that you were jumping
- 23:26the gun about the Vandamin girl because you just found out that she was at
- 23:27home all night. I'll check the rest of it. Okay much, where's
- 23:33the cigarette butt? Then the hairpiny? What is it? Marlow? Watch
- 23:38with the hairpin? Why'd you say, Marlow? Quick? Get the lights?
- 23:42Someone out front showed it. Maybe the law in skirts. Look getting
- 23:47that car over there. It's a babe in five will get your tender,
- 23:49she answers the name. Okay, Oh that jerk's going to be a lulu
- 23:52to protect. Yeah, well we better go aay the hairpin you're dropped into
- 23:57your pocket? Marrow, what's so special about it? Oh? Nothing,
- 24:03It was just a hunch. I had to forget it morrow. I want
- 24:07to see it. Okay, here, get a good look part. It
- 24:23was a fast twenty minute drive back out the bell Air and the Vannomin place.
- 24:27All the way I worried hard that the hunch I was playing was right,
- 24:30and I was going to be too late to do anything about it.
- 24:33When I was there, parked halfway up the Pebbal driveway, out of my
- 24:34car and running tow the fluorescent light in the sound of a woman's voice that
- 24:38filtered through the heavy iron mesh over an airvent the windowless target range. I
- 24:44slowed to a walk, switched to forty five from park at the right hand,
- 24:48and then I moved up to where I could both see and hear.
- 24:52Kay Vanaman was huddled in the far corner, her eyes crowded with fear and
- 24:56riveted on the dainty but lethal twenty two automatic that Cliff places murderer pointed straight
- 25:00at her head. Estelle Neely had her back to me, but with the
- 25:03grill it was designed to stop bullets between us. There was nothing I could
- 25:07do. You got to listen to me. Please listen before you do anything
- 25:10crazy. I swear I never knew that boys was married. I'd never have
- 25:14gone with him if i'd know. You're a liar. No, it's the
- 25:17truth, I tell you. It started like the other's fun and no questions
- 25:19asked. But then I fell in love and it never occurred to me that
- 25:25he might have been married. I don't want to hear anymore. I've already
- 25:27killed once for boys, the guy I turned into the police for something he
- 25:30did a month ago. You turned your own husband over. I did that
- 25:33so they'd put him away out of your reach. You'd never wait for him,
- 25:37You'd go your own marry merry way a week after he wasn't jay.
- 25:41Boys would be glad to come back to me after five years of living in
- 25:44a cage like an animal id. He'd never suspect that I was the one
- 25:47boy before I hired a private detective come and made sure that he knew.
- 25:52I never even suspected that boys could have anything to do with another woman.
- 25:56Then boys would never realize it was you who turned him in because you had
- 26:00no mo pal would be a witness to them. I killed Cliff Lace because
- 26:03he traced me from palm Lad and then found out that I was the one
- 26:07who told the police about boys. He would have blackmailed me forever. And
- 26:11I'm not sorry, or will I be when I kill you. Now,
- 26:17sit down this van and listen carefully. Couldn't shoot. I knew that it
- 26:21would be disastrous to yell, but I had to do something in a hurry.
- 26:23I moved up quietly to the door. It was locked. I'd only
- 26:27left one chance. The skylight on the roof the building was low, and
- 26:30a lawn chair nearby was all the help I needed. When I was up
- 26:34and over to the skylight, there was glass and no mesh underneath. I
- 26:37still hadn't made it because from that angle I could see ky but only here
- 26:41as now you know just what kind of a woman is gonna kill you?
- 26:45But why may I told you what you told me? It was you,
- 26:48young and beautiful, that started all this, All this that's almost over now
- 26:52because the other detected that model knows that I killed Lace. Not a hairpin
- 26:56there. I saw him from a window. I saw it pick up the
- 27:00hairpin, a black hair pin that couldn't possibly belong to a blond like you.
- 27:04The hairpiner said, Marlo knows that I killed Lace. So I throw
- 27:08and I know it before they get me. But my hand hard she did
- 27:22no just out well, fireball any appropriate wise cracks wise crack Oh not for
- 27:33quite a while, marlel, I'm too scared. Well. It was the
- 27:53usual hour and a half of questions and answers with client, followed by the
- 27:56same questions and answers with police, before I finally closed the door on Enoch
- 28:02Vanamin's marble halls and started down past the manicured shrubbery too, where I'd left
- 28:07my car outside. The night was cold and clear. As I walked,
- 28:14I looked up at the vastness overhead and wondered, wondered why I had the
- 28:18kind of job that made me no more than a houseboy with gun for a
- 28:22rich guy with a badly spoiled niece. I stopped wondering when I was at
- 28:27my car and no longer alone. I just wanted to say thanks before you
- 28:33left, Philip. I would do my best to stay out of trouble from
- 28:37here on out. You know why? No, why because I want to
- 28:41be good enough for the right guy who may him along Sunday, guy like
- 28:45you. Honey. Oh, thanks Phil, I'm very grateful. Yes,
- 28:53well, my job's all right nine times out of ten. The Adventures of
- 29:17Philip Marlowe Bringing You Raymond, Chandler's most famous character star Gerald Moore, are

- 29:26and Gene Levitt. Featured in the cast where GB Hunter, Janeavello, Olive
- 29:32Dearing, Ralph Moody, Tony Barrett, and Charles Russell. The special music
- 29:36is composed and conducted by Richard urant Hes shurted me with us again next week
- 29:45when Philip Marlowe say, it happened in a place called Bay City, where
- 29:49I was unwelcome to a fat fry cook with a secret and a Deppa gambler
- 29:53smoked oversized cigarettes. But where to the long arm of the law I was
- 29:59poison? Philip Marlowe has a new night, Ladies and Gentlemen, Tuesdays.
- 30:15Yes, starting February seventh, the Adventures of Philip Marlowe will be heard every
- 30:19Tuesday night at nine thirty Eastern Standard time. Be sure and listen. Remember
- 30:26Tuesday Night, marlow Night. And one week from tonight, at this time
- 30:30you'll find one of your favorite radio families, the Goldbergs. Yes, Molly,
- 30:36Jake, Sammy, Rosie and all their friends are moving from Friday nights
- 30:40on CBS to Saturdays. Starting next Saturday. This is Roy Rowan speaking.
- 30:45Stay tuned now for Gangbusters, which follows on most of these same CBS stations.
- 30:51This is CBS where the Goldbergs and Arthur Godfrey's Digest will now be heard
- 30:56every Saturday night. The Columbia Broadcasting System This is Andrew J. Graham,
- 31:18author of the web surface series Oh and a Man of His Wife. You're
- 31:22listening to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio, Welcome Back. This was
- 31:34a memorable episode. In fact, so memorable because I actually thought that we
- 31:41had that this was a script that was being redone when I saw the title
- 31:48and when I heard a bunch of elements. But then I remember that this
- 31:52was not that sort of script at all, that this was the first time
- 31:57they'd done it. But I had heard this before, and I remember back
- 32:04when when I heard when I heard a few of the cues in there.
- 32:08I listened to this way back when Charles Russell was Johnny Dollar. I think
- 32:15it was an early two thousand and ten, and Charles Russell appeared in this
- 32:21episode. This episode aired two weeks after his final turn as Johnny Dollar,
- 32:28and when I listened to this back in twenty ten, I couldn't find the
- 32:31role that he had played. But listening to it this time, it's obvious.
- 32:38Charles Russell played the sergeant, not the usual character played by Larry Dopkin,
- 32:46but this sergeant so just a fill in role. But there were some
- 32:52nice touches in this one. I liked Marlow running into the crooked private investigator.
- 33:00I also love the Chandler. Chandler, Where have I heard that name?
- 33:05That was just so cute. The mystery was good, although I thought
- 33:10it was kind of obvious listening to it again as to who the murderer was,
- 33:16if only for the fact that Marvelplate paid her so little attention. But
- 33:22overall a great episode, and that so many points of this episode stuck with
- 33:28me even more than five years after I first listened to it, I think
- 33:34indicates how good it was now. The Goldbergs advertised after the show is a
- 33:39pretty interesting series. It first began broadcasting over radio in nineteen twenty nine,
- 33:46and it was a slightly comedic soap opera covering the life of a typical poor
- 33:55Jewish family living in the Bronx end up going to There was a play version
- 34:02made, There was a movie in nineteen fifty and it also appeared in television
- 34:13starting in nineteen forty nine until nineteen fifty six, so it was a very
- 34:21key key program. There are a few episodes of it. As with any
- 34:28radio self, there's always a bit of a challenge in getting into it.
- 34:31There can be hundreds of episodes out there, and it can still be hard
- 34:36to follow storyline. It's not quite one of my favorites. I listened to
- 34:43an episode, wasn't quite able to get into it, but certainly it was
- 34:45a milestone in American radio history and yet another sign of what I was mentioning
- 34:52going on at CBS, with so many great comedy powerhouses coming over to that
- 34:59network at this time in radio history. All right, well, listener comments
- 35:06and feedback, and this one just a very simple one from Michael who just
- 35:12says Gerald Moore is the ace, indeed is all right. Well, be
- 35:16sure and join us tomorrow for Nick Carter and next Wednesday be with us for
- 35:22another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. In the meantime, send your
