Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Understanding the Separate Aspects of Being That Make Up the Human Individual’s Personality

- 0:01Most people look at what they consider to be their personality
- 0:06in a very simple and straightforward manner.
- 0:09The mixture of ideas thought process emotional responses,
- 0:15vital reactions, desires and physical needs.
- 0:18And Cravings is simply who they are.
- 0:22When they conclude that something needs to change, they
- 0:26try any number of strategies such as invoking resolutions,
- 0:30development of willpower, or even various forms of self
- 0:35Education and Training of some aspect of their being.
- 0:39In all of this, they tend not to identify nor recognize the
- 0:45different aspects of their being and the different energetic
- 0:49forces at work in these various. Levels.
- 0:54It is at this point that the psychological wisdom of the
- 0:57chakras becomes evident. The chakras are subtle energy
- 1:01centers that successively respond to and transmit
- 1:05different types of energies Associated, either with the
- 1:09physical being the vital being or the mental being in an
- 1:14ascending order of development. The chakra system implicitly has
- 1:20to recognize that there are various different types of
- 1:23energy that work on different levels of the being, and it
- 1:28thereby opens up an entire range of human psychological
- 1:32understanding that is not widely appreciated nor understood in
- 1:37the West. The mother notes quote, the
- 1:42ordinary human being is conscious only in his physical
- 1:45being and only in relatively rare moments, is he conscious of
- 1:50his mind just a little more frequently of his vital.
- 1:55But all this is mixed up in his Consciousness so much so that he
- 2:01would be quite unable to say, this movement comes from the
- 2:05mind this from the vital, this from the physical This already
- 2:10asks for a considerable development in order to be able
- 2:14to distinguish within oneself. The source of the different
- 2:18movements one has and it is so mixed that even when one tries
- 2:24at the beginning, it is very difficult to classify and
- 2:28separate one thing from another It is as when one works with
- 2:33colors takes three or four or five different colors and puts
- 2:37them in the same water and beat them up together, it makes a
- 2:41gray indistinct and incomprehensible mixture.
- 2:46You see and one can't say, which is red, which blue, which
- 2:51Greenwich yellow, it is something dirty.
- 2:54Lots of colors mixed. So first of all, one must do
- 2:59this little work of Separating the red blue, yellow green,
- 3:03putting them like this each and it's corner.
- 3:06It is not at all easy. I have met people who used to
- 3:11think themselves extremely intelligent by the way who
- 3:14thought they knew a lot. And when I spoke to them about
- 3:18the different parts of the being they looked at me like this and
- 3:22ask me, but what are you speaking about?
- 3:26They did not understand at all. I am, speaking of people who
- 3:30have the reputation of being intelligent, they don't
- 3:34understand at all for them. It is just the Consciousness, it
- 3:39is. The Consciousness, it is my
- 3:41Consciousness, and then there is the neighbors Consciousness.
- 3:45And again, there are things which do not have any
- 3:48Consciousness. And then I asked them whether
- 3:51animals had a Consciousness. So they began to scratch their
- 3:55head and said, perhaps it is, we who put our Consciousness in the
- 4:00animal. When we look at it like that
