- 0:00Welcome to the BearCat Chat, a podcast for everything Scotsloff
- 0:04School. Welcome everyone, to our first
- 0:16episode of season two of the BearCat Chat, the podcast for
- 0:21Everything Scotsloff Schools. I'm joined today by
- 0:24Superintendent Dr. Andrew Dick. Hello.
- 0:27Hello, Melissa. Thank you for having me on
- 0:29today. Yeah, we closed off the end of
- 0:32our last season last spring and here we are again.
- 0:34We're going to get this going again for the new school year.
- 0:37Yeah, I'm sure many of our students are asking the same
- 0:40thing, but I'm kind of wondering where our summer went.
- 0:43But we are looking forward to the start of another school
- 0:46year. Yeah, really weird weather we
- 0:48had this summer. I don't know.
- 0:49Hopefully everyone kind of got to get their summer things in
- 0:52that they wanted to do this year.
- 0:54Yeah, I do feel like the uncharacteristically cool and
- 0:58wet June we had compressed our summer more so than years past.
- 1:04Either way, I think back to school time is in the air.
- 1:07I think everyone, everyone's feeling it.
- 1:10I, you know, I've been in stores and places and I've seen
- 1:13families looks like they're doing back to school shopping it
- 1:16it is the season. Yes, it most certainly is.
- 1:19It's an exciting time for. Those that are associated with
- 1:23the school and kind of one of the special unique things about
- 1:27being involved in education is that fresh restart that we get.
- 1:31And for some of our students and families, it'll be a fresh start
- 1:35with Scottsville Public Schools. Yeah.
- 1:37So for everyone who might be joining us for the very first
- 1:39time, if you're new to our district, welcome.
- 1:41We, you know, we can't wait to see you on the first day of
- 1:44school, which, by the way, when is the first day of school?
- 1:48All students will start Thursday, August 17th.
- 1:52Oh, just over a week, I hope. I know I'm ready.
- 1:56I hope everyone else is ready. You and I both.
- 2:00Well, that's why we're here today.
- 2:01That's kind of our topic is this time of year.
- 2:05You know, we really work hard to try to get a lot of information
- 2:08out so that families can kind of feel confident heading into the
- 2:12school, new school year that they know what's going on.
- 2:14And so we're here with five things for Scottsville families
- 2:19to know for the new school year. So we're going to do a
- 2:22countdown. I've never done a countdown on
- 2:25here before, so this should be fun.
- 2:28We'll just jump right in, shall we Start with?
- 2:30Why don't you let us know what #5 is?
- 2:32#5 New for this school year is a back to school guide that should
- 2:37have hit all of our family's mailbox approximately a week
- 2:40ago. A very professionally completed
- 2:45multi page brochure with a lot of pertinent information
- 2:49included. Families can get the answers to
- 2:52their questions and information on topics such as school meals,
- 2:56bus transportation, our After School program, Chromebooks, and
- 3:00more. If you did not receive a copy of
- 3:02the Back to School Guide, we do have copies available in all of
- 3:06our school offices. Or you can access it online at
- 3:10our website at www.sbps.net. Yeah, this was something new
- 3:15that we did this year. I put this together and I
- 3:18really, I hope that it was a really convenient thing for
- 3:22families just to have the opportunity to kind of have all
- 3:26of the nuts and bolts of a new school year right in one place
- 3:29at their fingertips. I don't know about you.
- 3:31I've heard good things about it. People said, hey, I stuck it on
- 3:34my fridge. So hopefully this will be, you
- 3:37know, kind of an ongoing thing that we can continue to do just
- 3:41to help everybody kind of feel like they know what's going.
- 3:45Yes, I thought it was an outstanding idea.
- 3:47And I think the comments I've heard are very similar to what
- 3:51you've experienced. And I know my students and that
- 3:54I in my own home were excited to get that information.
- 3:57And just kind of a reminder, what was not too far along in
- 4:01the not so distant future was that start of school on
- 4:03Thursday, August 17th. Yeah.
- 4:05If anything else, it might just kind of get people in the mode
- 4:08and thinking about all this stuff that they they have to get
- 4:11ready for the new year. I have time to move on to.
- 4:15We'll talk about #4 five year strategic plan approved.
- 4:20Yeah, another exciting new thing for Scottsville Public Schools
- 4:24this coming school year at the June board meeting on the Board
- 4:27of Education approved our five year strategic plan, which
- 4:30includes 5 strategic priorities. The thing I'm probably most
- 4:35proud and pleased about within the strategic plan was truly the
- 4:40grassroots effort to gather input that.
- 4:43Occurred during the discovery phase.
- 4:46That process was facilitated by one of our own parents and a
- 4:50local businesswoman, Jamie Weingart of JMW Consulting.
- 4:55The five strategic priorities promote a sustained focus of
- 4:59what it will take to continue to be a high achieving district.
- 5:03And so I'm grateful for the input that was provided by
- 5:07various members of our community, representing parents,
- 5:11staff, individual board member conversations, students,
- 5:15community members. And it was through that
- 5:18discovery phase that we gathered a lot of input and we're able to
- 5:21then come together late in April about a 16 member team and take
- 5:27all that input to determine what those five strategic priorities
- 5:31would be. Yeah, I this was really a
- 5:36culmination of a whole lot of work over from a lot of people
- 5:39over a lot of time. But I think what's really great
- 5:43about this plan is, you know, like you mentioned, not only the
- 5:46fact that we, you know, we included some voices in this
- 5:49plan that we never had like students.
- 5:51We conducted a student focus group and to be able to have our
- 5:55students weigh in on where we should be headed over the next
- 5:58five years, I I thought was really special.
- 6:01But I think this plan, it has the things that are measurable,
- 6:06it has things that are achievable, but also at the same
- 6:10time, I think we'll really get us to some places where we
- 6:13should be as a district. Yeah, I look at this plan is is
- 6:17really it's our road map for the next five years.
- 6:20You know, decisions that we make should be made in alignment with
- 6:24our strategic plan and we need to be looking at it through that
- 6:27lens. And so it'll be, it'll be fun to
- 6:31look back in five years and say you know what, this is what we
- 6:34had hoped to achieve, what were we able to achieve and and
- 6:39celebrate those successes. But as we both know, the real
- 6:43work begins now as we look to execute that five year strategic
- 6:46plan and it's going to take all of us working together to
- 6:49accomplish that. Yeah.
- 6:50And so for families, if you haven't seen that plan, you know
- 6:54it got approved during the summer.
- 6:55So the timing was you know, a little different there.
- 6:58If you haven't taken a look at that, it's the full entire plan
- 7:02is available on our website at svps.net under that about
- 7:06section. You'll find that strategic plan
- 7:08there and you can go through and read the the whole plan and its
- 7:11entirety and I'd really encourage people, you know, do
- 7:14that so that you can see, you know, what's important to us as
- 7:19as a school district. Shall we move on to number?
- 7:223 #3 is Lincoln Heights receives A modernization through our
- 7:30ongoing elementary modernization project.
- 7:33The prior 2 summers have seen the Roosevelt and Longfellow
- 7:38communities, elementary buildings receive a
- 7:41modernization and this summer it was Lincoln Heights.
- 7:44That does not mean that Longfellow and Roosevelt.
- 7:49Were not did not receive any updates this summer as they did
- 7:51themselves. Both schools received restroom
- 7:55remodels that were completed recently at Roosevelt and
- 7:58Longfellow. The the focus this summer at
- 8:01Lincoln Heights was very similar to that at Longfellow and
- 8:06Roosevelt. Receiving new paint, new carpet,
- 8:09classroom storage, all new furniture A.
- 8:13More secure, safe front entrance at Lincoln Heights and then
- 8:17upgrades to the common areas such as paint and tile in the
- 8:21stairwells, new carpet in the hallways And very similar to
- 8:25Longfell and Roosevelt, we are anxious to see students
- 8:29reactions when they first see their school.
- 8:32That's going to look a lot different than the way they
- 8:34remember it in May. Yeah, we've had, I know you and
- 8:37I have both been with the district a long time.
- 8:39So we've had a lot of those back to school moments and those
- 8:42first days of school. But I think over these past few
- 8:46years, some of the most exciting back to school moments I've seen
- 8:49is seeing those elementary students walk into that
- 8:51modernized building for that first time and just seeing the
- 8:55looks on their faces and just how proud they are of how their
- 8:59school environment looks. Yeah truly the the modernization
- 9:04creates such a more welcoming learning environment for our
- 9:08students and staff. And so it's it's pretty
- 9:11priceless to see the reactions and smiles on students, families
- 9:15and Staffs face when they see the building for the first time
- 9:19after the modernization project is complete.
- 9:22You know these this project would not be possible if it was
- 9:25not for the fiscal responsibility of our Board of
- 9:28Education district leadership the highly.
- 9:31Content, skilled technology, safety and facilities teams that
- 9:36we have on board here at Scottsville Public Schools as we
- 9:39are able to complete a significant amount of the work
- 9:42in house. Yeah, and we talked about that
- 9:45in our episode last spring with Mr. Binky as we were heading
- 9:50into this project. But yeah, that's just a great
- 9:52reminder. You know, if you, if you see any
- 9:54of those folks out in the community, you know, be sure to
- 9:56give them a thank you. Because it was amazing the
- 9:59amount of work that our own staff have been able to achieve
- 10:03while still preparing the whole rest of the district to get
- 10:07ready for back to school. And now on to #2.
- 10:11We have a new food service provider Sodexo is going to be
- 10:16partnering with us this year, our new food service provider.
- 10:20Last spring, we had a bidding process to select our food
- 10:25service management company. And as a result of that a number
- 10:29of staff members throughout the district went and visited some
- 10:32schools and you know ate some meals and talked to students and
- 10:36and staff members and other districts.
- 10:38And and as part of that bidding process on Sodexo is who we
- 10:43wound up awarding our bid to. So I think this will be in some
- 10:48ways things will change and in some things won't change like
- 10:52the amount of different options that you have at the high
- 10:55school, the middle school and the two choices at the
- 10:58elementary school. Those things will will stay the
- 11:00same and you can still pay for your meals online through the
- 11:03infinite campus parent portal. But we're hoping to see, you
- 11:07know maybe some new things as well some new meals that are
- 11:11going to be bringing to us. Also, they have an app so
- 11:16families if you if you would like to use your mobile device
- 11:22as your main function to get that menu and nutrition
- 11:26information, you should download Cidex are So Happy app and and
- 11:31just a week here right around the time school starts.
- 11:33You'll be able to find Scott's bluff in there and you'll be
- 11:35able to get all of our menus regardless of your building as
- 11:38well as that nutrition information.
- 11:40So that's available in the App Store, the Google Play Store,
- 11:43and also as an Alexis skill. Yeah.
- 11:45We're looking forward to partnering with Sodexo as our
- 11:50new food service provider and seeing what great things they
- 11:54can do for this very essential part of the day for our students
- 11:58as our food service management company, all indications from
- 12:02initial meetings and correspondence and.
- 12:05Other schools we've talked to, it's been a very favorable
- 12:08relationship for the district and we would expect much of the
- 12:11same here as customer public schools.
- 12:13Yeah, I would agree these last week or so here, they've been
- 12:16really busy here in our buildings putting up new
- 12:19signage, training staff, working on all sorts of things.
- 12:23So I think it'll be really exciting to see what they can do
- 12:26for us. And then last but not least, you
- 12:29want to give us that number one. Number one thing that we want to
- 12:34make our families aware about aware of for the 2324 school
- 12:37year, they are the new elementary playgrounds at
- 12:41Lincoln Heights, Westmore and Lake Minitaire.
- 12:44As many of you know, Longfellow and Roosevelt received their new
- 12:48playgrounds in the summer of 2022, and so we were able to
- 12:51complete that project here in summer of 2023 at Lincoln
- 12:54Heights, Westmore and Lake Minitaire.
- 12:57Another one of those things, it was an absolute joy to see and
- 13:00that was the the reactions and the responses from students as
- 13:04they saw the new playground equipment at Longfell and
- 13:06Roosevelt. And we look forward to seeing
- 13:08those same reactions at Lincoln Heights, Westmore and Lake
- 13:11Minitaire. I'd like to provide a special
- 13:14thank you to the Scottsville Public Schools Foundation and
- 13:17the sponsors for helping to make this project possible.
- 13:21Yeah. And those sponsors include
- 13:23Platte Valley Bank, Oregon Trail Community Foundation and the
- 13:27Flea Spa Family Foundation along with a whole lot of other
- 13:30individual community members and students.
- 13:33So we had the place wrong fun run that took place this spring.
- 13:37So for all of the kids who went out and, you know, raised a
- 13:40little money and, you know, had a good time running at that
- 13:43event, this is the culmination of that.
- 13:45And they get to see those brand new playgrounds at every
- 13:48elementary. I think, you know, one of the
- 13:50coolest things about those playgrounds is how
- 13:53individualized they are to each school.
- 13:56They are the same, I think the same manufacturer, but every
- 14:01school kind of adapted their own playground to kind of meet, you
- 14:05know, meet the needs and and the likes and the wants of their own
- 14:08individual school. Yeah, each school had their own.
- 14:13Autonomy in in making those decisions as they could consider
- 14:16the size of their playground, existing equipment areas that
- 14:20they thought they could enhance their their playgrounds for
- 14:23their students And so each one it is uniquely different and the
- 14:28new playground at Westmore has some increased accessibility for
- 14:33students with disabilities and so we're we're looking forward
- 14:36to providing that opportunity at the Westmore community.
- 14:41That's fabulous. I really think that every single
- 14:44elementary student is going to really enjoy taking advantage of
- 14:48these when they come back for our first day and throughout the
- 14:53rest of the school year. So there are five things I hope
- 14:58all of our students and families are all ready to come back and
- 15:03join us for the new year. If you're looking for any
- 15:07information as far as those orientations or even our new
- 15:11handbooks are already published, all of that information is
- 15:14available out there on our district website at svps.net.
- 15:19Our schools are staffed right now, so if you need help with
- 15:22anything, go ahead and give your local school a call.
- 15:26We're we're here to help any families out with anything they
- 15:29need right now. Yeah.
- 15:31We encourage that collaboration as we know that's what's going
- 15:34to create the best learning situation for our students.
- 15:38And so we're here to answer any questions you have and to serve
- 15:42you and to meet the needs that you have as families.
- 15:44And so we look forward to another great year highlighted
- 15:48by many achievements and successes of our students.
- 15:52All right. Well, thank you so much for
- 15:54kicking off another season of this podcast and getting ready.
- 15:59Even though it's a super busy time for us right now, I'm glad
- 16:03you're on the show. Yes, Thank you for having me
- 16:05again. It's certainly my honor to be
- 16:08the guest on episode one of season 2, all right?
- 16:12And I have planned to have a whole lot of different kind of
- 16:15fun activities and student guests on this year for everyone
- 16:18to hear. So thank you and we will see you
- 16:21next episode.
