- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, and welcome inside One Leg Up alex Media.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's one of my favorite months. It's the month of March.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Let's celebrate with some Irish music. Welcome aboard to this
- 0:09Speaker 1: edition on One Leg Up alex Media. All Right, Well,
- 0:19Speaker 1: one of my hockey connoisseurs who just loves the game
- 0:23Speaker 1: and talks about it with me frequently is lou Terminello
- 0:26Speaker 1: and Urmandello's take, I want to start here. I've got
- 0:30Speaker 1: two days in July and relations to trade Aatlana. Tell
- 0:35Speaker 1: you why that I'm looking to go to Chicago for
- 0:38Speaker 1: turns out learn today the Yankees are playing the White
- 0:41Speaker 1: Sox and the Cubs back to back. I would love
- 0:44Speaker 1: to be there for that, and so I'm manifesting that
- 0:47Speaker 1: through One Leg Up alex Media. Let's get me out
- 0:49Speaker 1: to Chicago, maybe my sojourn since my dad passed, because
- 0:52Speaker 1: he was a big Cubs guy. And I'm like, what
- 0:54Speaker 1: a perfect way to honor him by going to those
- 0:56Speaker 1: two days. But you know it won't be there Nick Felino,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and I'm I'm kind of sad because Fellino was the
- 1:03Speaker 1: captain of the Blackhawks. From what I can follow, he
- 1:05Speaker 1: was sort of a heart and soul of that team.
- 1:07Speaker 1: But they say they did him in a solid by
- 1:10Speaker 1: training him to the Wild. Why is that just gonna
- 1:12Speaker 1: be him a better chance to win that you think?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Or well, his brother, his brother plays on the Minnesota Wild,
- 1:18Speaker 2: and I think he had kind of asked, you know,
- 1:21Speaker 2: that would be nice. The Blackhawks are getting some kind
- 1:26Speaker 2: of lower level future considerations. I just saw Felina interviewed.
- 1:30Speaker 2: He was very, very complimentary of the Blackhawks.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Management for that.
- 1:37Speaker 1: You know, the history. I'm sure they don't put they
- 1:39Speaker 1: don't put the sea on your jersey on everybody there,
- 1:42Speaker 1: you know what I mean?
- 1:43Speaker 2: So sure, And as we said many times, the captain
- 1:47Speaker 2: c in hockey is different than any other sport. It
- 1:50Speaker 2: means something in hockey, it does.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Absolutely And so uh, that's where I want to begin.
- 1:58Speaker 1: It is you know, Fellino was there for a lot,
- 2:00Speaker 1: it felt like for a long time anyway, and now
- 2:02Speaker 1: he's traded. Now, my dad's team was a Blackhawks, So
- 2:06Speaker 1: it's kind of fitting when we start there. What are
- 2:08Speaker 1: they gonna do there? Because I want to see them
- 2:10Speaker 1: build around Connor. It just seems like maybe they're gonna
- 2:12Speaker 1: build take it apart them build around him? Is that
- 2:14Speaker 1: what we're seeing.
- 2:15Speaker 2: No, they're not gonna take it part. Now, they're gonna
- 2:19Speaker 2: be They're gonna be in the draft lotter YAGUEA. And
- 2:22Speaker 2: you want to get into the top five or top seven.
- 2:24Speaker 2: It's not like the NBA or the NFL. He gotta
- 2:28Speaker 2: be in that top you know, that top five, six
- 2:30Speaker 2: or seven to get an instant impact. Not saying you
- 2:33Speaker 2: can't draft a franchise player at twenty in the NHL draft,
- 2:37Speaker 2: but no, the black Hawks are looking to continue to
- 2:40Speaker 2: build around around their core next year. I'm sure Connor
- 2:43Speaker 2: per Dog is going to want to be in the
- 2:44Speaker 2: playoffs after missing it his first you know, three years
- 2:47Speaker 2: of his career.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Amazing, three years gone by already, and this is it's crazy,
- 2:53Speaker 1: but you know, and he had a he had an okay, sir,
- 2:56Speaker 1: I felt like he didn't start as healthy or as
- 2:58Speaker 1: match Shaeffer did his first season, but you know, it's
- 3:01Speaker 1: it's what it is. Both guys are stellar players though,
- 3:04Speaker 1: and and certainly in great draft picks.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Absolutely, you talk about Matthew Shaffer.
- 3:10Speaker 2: We talk about him almost every week on this show, Alex,
- 3:16Speaker 2: Matthew Shaeffer, He's totally transforming the Islanders at eighteen and
- 3:20Speaker 2: a half.
- 3:21Speaker 3: He's gonna win the.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Call the Trophy. Uh, he should win it unanimously. I
- 3:26Speaker 2: believe he's a Norris Trope, legitimate Norris Trophy candidate as
- 3:30Speaker 2: best defenseman and Alex He's also should be he should
- 3:35Speaker 2: be getting MVP votes for the Hart Trophy. That's the
- 3:38Speaker 2: kind of impact this kid has had. So, I mean,
- 3:41Speaker 2: the Islanders are I don't know if they're gonna make
- 3:43Speaker 2: the playoffs or not in these last twenty games. I
- 3:45Speaker 2: hope they do, but you know, it's it's missed there.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So it's got has been unbelievable. I got some breaking
- 3:55Speaker 1: news is now looks like the Blues and Islanders are
- 3:58Speaker 1: coming closer to a trade for Shen and that would
- 4:00Speaker 1: be an incredible drake because Sheen was served the Heart
- 4:03Speaker 1: and soul. I mentioned that of the Blues when they
- 4:05Speaker 1: won a few years. I mean, it would be a
- 4:07Speaker 1: very interesting move if the Islanders got him.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Well, he's also the captain. He's he's also the captain
- 4:14Speaker 2: of the of the Saint Louis Blue Cell. He'll bring
- 4:18Speaker 2: leadership and he's another top six forward that that the
- 4:22Speaker 2: that the Islanders that the Islanders need. I mean, they
- 4:25Speaker 2: gotta score they got they gotta score, you know, And
- 4:28Speaker 2: their power play for the second straight year was thirty
- 4:30Speaker 2: one out of thirty two. Now I'm not great at math,
- 4:33Speaker 2: but I know being thirty one out of thirty two
- 4:35Speaker 2: is not good.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Well, is that a wah situation? Or where is that?
- 4:40Speaker 1: Where does that lie? I mean, I.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Don't know, Alex because their power play has been bad,
- 4:47Speaker 2: even in the Barry Trotz days when they went to
- 4:49Speaker 2: the conference finals or to the final four two years
- 4:52Speaker 2: in a row. It's just been one of those things
- 4:55Speaker 2: that they can't get right. They've they've changed power play coaches,
- 5:00Speaker 2: they changed power play technique players. It's really a frustrating thing.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I mean last night they had a couple of power
- 5:06Speaker 2: plays they didn't get a shot off. Really not good.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Not good.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Stand I mean, we're the deadline shut? But where do
- 5:16Speaker 1: we stand overall? I mean, are all three teams pretty
- 5:18Speaker 1: much done? Is this not gonna be a playoff year
- 5:21Speaker 1: for any of our guys? And then try State? Or
- 5:23Speaker 1: where are we? What are we looking at?
- 5:24Speaker 2: I mean, well, the Islands obviously have the best shot.
- 5:27Speaker 2: They're in a playoff spot right now. Columbus has been
- 5:31Speaker 2: on such a tear it's just amazing that you think
- 5:34Speaker 2: they're gonna slow down and they don't. So if anybody's
- 5:37Speaker 2: gonna catch the Islanders or the Penguins, I think it's
- 5:40Speaker 2: gonna be Columbus. They got Cornor Garland today from Vancouver,
- 5:45Speaker 2: who was also talked about going to the Islanders.
- 5:48Speaker 3: I'm a big Connor Garland fan.
- 5:51Speaker 2: He's not a big guy, he's a like five nine
- 5:54Speaker 2: five ten, but he'll he'll get those dirty goals for you.
- 5:57Speaker 3: He's not afraid. That was a good trade for Columbus.
- 6:01Speaker 2: But the biggest surprise to me, and there's only been,
- 6:04Speaker 2: like I said, six or seven trades so far, is
- 6:07Speaker 2: John Carlson. Yeah, going to the Ducks. Now we talk
- 6:12Speaker 2: about the golden goal. Well, in World Juniors for the
- 6:16Speaker 2: United States, John Carlson scored a golden goal in overtime
- 6:19Speaker 2: to win the World Juniors back about I don't know
- 6:22Speaker 2: about two thousand and eight, two thousand and seven, somewhere
- 6:24Speaker 2: in there. That that surprised me. Actually it surprised the
- 6:28Speaker 2: Washington Capitals. I saw a Vechkin he said, this is
- 6:31Speaker 2: the saddest day of his career, losing John Carlson. Tom
- 6:36Speaker 2: Wilson was very emotional. So that shows you the kind
- 6:38Speaker 2: of player not only is talent wise, but the kind
- 6:42Speaker 2: of teammate that he was. Losing guys like that, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 2: that's tough.
- 6:48Speaker 3: But let me tell you one thing.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Adding a guy like John Carlson is veteran leadership and
- 6:53Speaker 2: his veteran skills to a young, fast team like the
- 6:57Speaker 2: Anaheim Ducks out they have so much talent. I mean,
- 7:02Speaker 2: they're not there, no.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And I think this is the best shot for Cryer
- 7:05Speaker 1: to get a Cup. I really do. I think this
- 7:07Speaker 1: is one of his years with this team.
- 7:08Speaker 2: So yeah, well, if it's not this year, it'll be
- 7:11Speaker 2: next year. Getting Crider was very very good for the Ducks. Yes,
- 7:16Speaker 2: and we're on the come up to begin with.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I mean they've been they've been on the come up
- 7:19Speaker 1: a little bit here.
- 7:20Speaker 2: So oh, without without question, they really have a nice
- 7:23Speaker 2: young team.
- 7:24Speaker 1: All right. Let me ask you this locally, though we
- 7:27Speaker 1: expected Trochuk to be dealt, that hasn't happened yet. Karrick
- 7:31Speaker 1: was Karrick was was. But when I hear things like
- 7:36Speaker 1: roster retooling is why they're sitting, it's like, don't don't
- 7:40Speaker 1: tell us, just tell us you're gonna trade the guys.
- 7:42Speaker 1: You know at this point that that's trade code for trade,
- 7:44Speaker 1: isn't it when there's a roster management and all that.
- 7:47Speaker 2: So yeah, no, And I mean, let's fay, roster management
- 7:51Speaker 2: is the code for a guy on the trading block.
- 7:55Speaker 2: There's still let's see what time as we're doing this,
- 7:57Speaker 2: it's two nineteen. I assume in the next forty one
- 8:04Speaker 2: minutes at that he'll be traded. I don't know why
- 8:07Speaker 2: the Rangers wouldn't trade him to get something back. Let's
- 8:10Speaker 2: face it, he's a center who wins face offs. Even
- 8:15Speaker 2: in the gold medal game, we saw the importance of
- 8:16Speaker 2: faceoffs in overtime. We saw the inportant Trochick and bo
- 8:21Speaker 2: Horvat faced off against each other and then left the ice,
- 8:24Speaker 2: and then they put other players on because of the
- 8:27Speaker 2: I want to take advantage of the three on three.
- 8:30Speaker 2: But Trochick was there and show you how important the
- 8:32Speaker 2: faceoff is. And you cannot tell me there isn't a
- 8:35Speaker 2: team that's going to be in the playoffs that cannot
- 8:37Speaker 2: use him. So I would have expected by three pm
- 8:43Speaker 2: he will be traded. And you know, I feel like
- 8:46Speaker 2: it completes the ball game. It completes the blow up
- 8:50Speaker 2: if you will, of this team. If he gets traded,
- 8:52Speaker 2: that would be it. That would be the final.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean again, completing the blow up would be getting.
- 8:58Speaker 2: But yeah, that would be getting rid of a banajad
- 9:02Speaker 2: Or or Fox. And I heard something from Emily kaplan
- 9:06Speaker 2: and on Canadian TV while I was watching this morning
- 9:11Speaker 2: and we talked about this last week. Remember I asked you,
- 9:14Speaker 2: what would you do about the range if the Rangers
- 9:16Speaker 2: were trades? The stirking in the offseason, and that the
- 9:20Speaker 2: net just the fact that the name is being bandied about.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Other teams have probably asked about the Sterkin. I wouldn't
- 9:26Speaker 2: have been surprised if Edmonton asked about I really that
- 9:32Speaker 2: that would not have surprised. And why is that's something
- 9:34Speaker 2: that could be revisited in the summertime. Why is he's
- 9:40Speaker 2: on the block because but the Panthers they're in Well,
- 9:46Speaker 2: he's on the block because he's going to be a
- 9:48Speaker 2: free agent at the end of this year. The Panthers
- 9:51Speaker 2: have had a bad year obviously, going to the final
- 9:54Speaker 2: three years in a row, playing one hundred plus games
- 9:58Speaker 2: three years in a row, it catches up to you
- 9:59Speaker 2: if had major injuries. I don't think we're BOSSI doing
- 10:04Speaker 2: a trade. I think, uh, we're you know, we'll see
- 10:08Speaker 2: what happens in the next little while. We're forty minutes
- 10:10Speaker 2: and six seconds away from from the tree.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Well you know it's coming up, coming up the next
- 10:17Speaker 1: couple of weeks after we just had the men's and
- 10:21Speaker 1: women's I guess alebodied hockey teams. Whatever you want to say. Now,
- 10:26Speaker 1: the Paralympians playing sled hockey is very intense. I actually
- 10:30Speaker 1: played it once and I've damaged my finger on the ice.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I never went back on there, but I was about
- 10:35Speaker 1: seven or eight years old at the time. I might
- 10:38Speaker 1: try it an adulthood. I don't know. We'll have to see.
- 10:40Speaker 1: But my point is is this is gonna be exciting.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Have you ever followed sled hockey? Well, yes I have,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and actually before.
- 10:48Speaker 2: You called me, I was watching the uh watching the
- 10:51Speaker 2: opening ceremonies.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I think, right now, this this Paralympics is finally being
- 10:59Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to it.
- 11:00Speaker 3: I'll be watching them.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I think this Paralympics is finally being marketed the way
- 11:04Speaker 1: they're supposed to. I mean this, I call them adaptive athletes.
- 11:07Speaker 1: They deserve a shout out. They deserve all the praise,
- 11:10Speaker 1: but you know, I want to get people an insight
- 11:12Speaker 1: is because I've been around it forever. They didn't do
- 11:15Speaker 1: it just to get the praise. They're freaking athletic guys.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I mean, just because we might be missing a limb
- 11:20Speaker 1: doesn't mean we're any different. We are competitive as hell.
- 11:27Speaker 2: No doubt about it. And I've seen a copulation of
- 11:29Speaker 2: some of your athletic feats, and I know that you're
- 11:32Speaker 2: athletic as hell.
- 11:34Speaker 1: And we know. I say that I'm friends with Patrick Holgren,
- 11:37Speaker 1: who will be skiing for the Paralympic USA team. I mean,
- 11:40Speaker 1: guy gets in a motorcycle accident, but that didn't let
- 11:44Speaker 1: him stop his competitive spirit. He went and became a Paralympian.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I mean, I love those kind of stories.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Oh me too, which it shows you the true, the
- 11:54Speaker 3: true human spear and how how tough these people are men.
- 12:00Speaker 1: You know, the curling is very interesting. They have to
- 12:03Speaker 1: push it along with the little for the thing because
- 12:05Speaker 1: obviously when you're in the peril pelegic you can't reach
- 12:09Speaker 1: out on the ice. But the way they adapt these
- 12:11Speaker 1: sports is pretty neat.
- 12:12Speaker 2: I have to say, Oh, I totally and I'll be
- 12:17Speaker 2: looking forward to it.
- 12:18Speaker 3: But like I said, but yeah, as we speak, the opening.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Ceremony in Milana is going on right now on USA Network,
- 12:25Speaker 2: and I guess Peacock.
- 12:27Speaker 3: There you go.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Well, oh, go ahead, go ahead. I mean, I don't
- 12:30Speaker 1: have any more on the deadline, but I do want
- 12:32Speaker 1: to get to the other big story, which is Team
- 12:33Speaker 1: USA starting tonight World Baseball Classic. I know you don't
- 12:37Speaker 1: want to watch it, but come on, Lou, I would
- 12:39Speaker 1: love it if we follow it up with a gold
- 12:41Speaker 1: medal to win the World Baseball Classic.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Maybe even as I.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Said in the past, of course I want to see
- 12:49Speaker 2: the United States when this World Baseball Class. But it's
- 12:56Speaker 2: let's face it, when there's a when when there's a
- 12:58Speaker 2: tournament that has a mercy rule like the World Basbok
- 13:02Speaker 2: Classic has, and the mercy rule is invoked today when
- 13:06Speaker 2: Japan be Chinese Taipei fifteenth to nothing at the end
- 13:10Speaker 2: of seven innings, you gotta and there's a pitch count,
- 13:14Speaker 2: you gotta take it with a grain, a little bit
- 13:16Speaker 2: of a grain of soul.
- 13:17Speaker 3: That that's what I'm saying.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Yes, and there's there's teams that really are they baseball countries, Czechia, Brazil,
- 13:25Speaker 2: that's all.
- 13:25Speaker 3: I'm not trying to downplay.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Is more of a hockey town.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Okay, Czech of course, yeah, absolutely.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So really I've never seen them play in the World
- 13:34Speaker 1: Baseball Classic before. I don't know I.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Either, but apparently they are starting an amateur program, and
- 13:42Speaker 2: all the guys who are there, I think are just
- 13:44Speaker 2: are all amateurs, don't any level of professional baseball. But
- 13:49Speaker 2: you know, I'll but it's not on the level of
- 13:54Speaker 2: the of what we saw last a week ago Sunday.
- 13:57Speaker 1: And you know, when they're in Judge, that's gonna be
- 14:00Speaker 1: my The trade is official. The Isles have received Braidon Sheen.
- 14:05Speaker 1: So that's breaking news as we talk right now.
- 14:07Speaker 2: So so that means Braidon Shen waved his no trade
- 14:11Speaker 2: clawse to come to the Islanders. By the way, his
- 14:14Speaker 2: brother got trade this morning, Luke Shen got traded from
- 14:18Speaker 2: the Winnipeg Jets to the to the Buffalo Sabers. By
- 14:20Speaker 2: the way, all those young players the Buffalo Sabers have
- 14:23Speaker 2: had over the years, they finally have meshed and since
- 14:27Speaker 2: December ninth, they have the best record in the National
- 14:30Speaker 2: Hockey League and they're gonna break that.
- 14:32Speaker 3: They're gonna break that.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Playoff and leave the New York Jets as the longest
- 14:39Speaker 2: pro sports.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Team America with a playoff drought.
- 14:44Speaker 1: You know what, we haven't had you since we won
- 14:46Speaker 1: the gold medal, that's right. So let me ask you
- 14:48Speaker 1: about your reaction to all these guys going to the
- 14:51Speaker 1: different arenas. You know, the Austin Matthews, Jack Hughes the
- 14:53Speaker 1: other night. Then you had Jack Hughes make that incredible
- 14:56Speaker 1: speech in Newark a couple of weeks ago. I mean,
- 14:59Speaker 1: as an American and as a hockey guy, how to
- 15:02Speaker 1: make you feel a little emotional, not just the game itself,
- 15:05Speaker 1: but then to watch all the aftermath of them coming
- 15:07Speaker 1: back to these arenas.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I mean it was it was all. It
- 15:16Speaker 2: was well done by all of the all of the teams.
- 15:19Speaker 2: The Devils had a nice ceremony. And I like the
- 15:23Speaker 2: fact that you know, Jack Hughes also without Tate Thompson
- 15:27Speaker 2: knowing called him, called them off the bench to join
- 15:31Speaker 2: them on the ice at before Jack you spoke, and
- 15:35Speaker 2: I thought that was that was a good teammate move
- 15:38Speaker 2: by by Hey, he's a great kid. MHM said all
- 15:48Speaker 2: the right things. Then the other night, the United States
- 15:53Speaker 2: also had the UH when they played Toronto, they had
- 15:56Speaker 2: members of the women's team, Megan Keller, Frank Gold the goalie,
- 16:02Speaker 2: and uh, and there was another player there and I
- 16:05Speaker 2: can't remember her name, but you know he did the
- 16:07Speaker 2: face off between Megan Keller Matthews and I think you
- 16:12Speaker 2: had Uh, it was three of them.
- 16:13Speaker 3: It was it was Keller. I can't remember who the
- 16:18Speaker 3: third one is. And I was watching it live, so
- 16:21Speaker 3: I apologize well.
- 16:23Speaker 1: And then I mentioned that because up in Buffalo, you know,
- 16:26Speaker 1: Tage Thompson and Jack Ico. That was pretty cool moment.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I mean, it's just fun to watch all that unity
- 16:32Speaker 1: and all the arenas across the country. And as you
- 16:35Speaker 1: called it, Lou, when Austin Matthews was given his flowers
- 16:39Speaker 1: in Toronto, they booed him pretty loudly. And some say
- 16:43Speaker 1: that could be worthy of a trade. You're gonna let
- 16:45Speaker 1: the guys representatives of a country, uh say he should
- 16:50Speaker 1: be traded like that's nonsense to me, Lou.
- 16:53Speaker 3: That's nonsense on correct uh And uh.
- 16:58Speaker 2: You know, we we texted each other last night night
- 17:01Speaker 2: about the three.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Teams in the Eastern Conference that.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Have been big disappointments, the Rangers, the Devils and the
- 17:10Speaker 2: Toronto Maple Leafs. And I wouldn't be surprised if Austin
- 17:15Speaker 2: Matthews gets traded at the end of the year. I'm
- 17:20Speaker 2: tuned into a lot of Toronto media. They're not warming
- 17:25Speaker 2: up to the guy anymore. They think that he's that
- 17:28Speaker 2: he got old, even though he's only twenty eight. He
- 17:30Speaker 2: got old quickly.
- 17:31Speaker 3: I would not be surprised if he's traded in the offseason.
- 17:35Speaker 3: As matter of fact, they.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Lost the Rangers last night. That's all you need to know, really,
- 17:39Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, and I saw.
- 17:41Speaker 2: The score was too too and then I didn't see
- 17:45Speaker 2: the third period last night, and then I saw they
- 17:47Speaker 2: lost six to two, and I know the last goal
- 17:50Speaker 2: wasn't empty. And that by the way, I don't know
- 17:51Speaker 2: why coaches pull their goalie when they're down two three goals.
- 17:55Speaker 2: I don't get that, you know, late in the game.
- 17:57Speaker 3: But uh, that's just me.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Well, you know, my my favorite thing is when they
- 18:05Speaker 1: now pull him with five minutes left in the game.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I don't understand that either, But that's on the Sorry
- 18:09Speaker 1: for another thing. It's the point like, you can't let
- 18:11Speaker 1: what he did for a team USA affect him as
- 18:15Speaker 1: your player. But you know what if I'm Aston Matthews,
- 18:17Speaker 1: I'll like you have that attitude. I want out anyway,
- 18:19Speaker 1: Like I want to be out of that country, that city.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I mean, I'd want to be out of there. I
- 18:23Speaker 1: really know.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I agree, I totally agree with you. And that may happen.
- 18:28Speaker 2: They may they may sit down and talk to him
- 18:30Speaker 2: and say hey, we're going into a rebuild and they
- 18:35Speaker 2: may talk to him. They might talk to William Kneelander
- 18:39Speaker 2: uh to say hey, if we can move you, what
- 18:42Speaker 2: do you think? And I think Austin Matthews probably would
- 18:46Speaker 2: say yes, I think And we know the teams that will.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Be in on it, you know, Uh.
- 18:53Speaker 2: It'll be the Rangers and the Flyers and the Islanders
- 18:56Speaker 2: and the Devils and the black Hawks. You know, we
- 19:00Speaker 2: know the teams that that that'll be in on or
- 19:02Speaker 2: Boston Matthews.
- 19:04Speaker 3: So so see. But yeah, it wasn't great the way
- 19:08Speaker 3: they treated.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Him, Oh no, horribly. And then of course Clutterbuck, although
- 19:15Speaker 1: Clutterbuck Hullabuck didn't really get that much negativity up in
- 19:19Speaker 1: Winnipeg that I noticed. I mean, I feel like he
- 19:21Speaker 1: was whatever.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Now, No, you're you're right, because the Winnipeg market and
- 19:27Speaker 2: Western Canada is different than Eastern Canada.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Different, So.
- 19:39Speaker 1: There you go, all right, I'm back, yeh. I mean
- 19:43Speaker 1: it just it's it's different markets too. There's that as well.
- 19:46Speaker 1: But I just think Austin Matthews deserves way better, not
- 19:50Speaker 1: just because of waiting FORTINUSA, but just in general. He
- 19:52Speaker 1: deserves way better. He really does.
- 19:54Speaker 3: He scored sixty goals for the Yeah sixty golf season
- 19:57Speaker 3: two years ago.
- 19:58Speaker 2: For the Maple League, He's already broken the career scoring
- 20:02Speaker 2: record for goals. I don't know what they want from this.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Guy, all right? Uh so we got we got that
- 20:11Speaker 1: out of the way, and now we're at the trade
- 20:13Speaker 1: of the line. We've got that breaking news story. What
- 20:15Speaker 1: else is on your mind? Louis? I mean, I feel
- 20:17Speaker 1: like it's right now not as big of a lively
- 20:19Speaker 1: sports season the Knicks. The Knicks are on right now.
- 20:24Speaker 1: They've seem to win one night to lose. I don't
- 20:26Speaker 1: know where they're going to right now. But look, it's
- 20:30Speaker 1: it's a little frustrating because again, all the pump and
- 20:34Speaker 1: circumstances done with the hockey, we go back to depressing hockey.
- 20:38Speaker 1: It feels like, so how do we get our mood better?
- 20:41Speaker 1: I guess Saint John's is really the guiding light right now.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Right, we got to see where Saint John's ends up.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Will kind of see they get on selection Sunday. As
- 20:51Speaker 2: far as the Knicks go, I mean, I don't think
- 20:55Speaker 2: based on how the NBA is nowadays. And this is
- 20:57Speaker 2: just my observation, I don't think you could pinpoint like
- 21:01Speaker 2: we like say, in hockey, Colorado is going to be
- 21:03Speaker 2: the favorite in hockey going in, and you could say
- 21:07Speaker 2: Oklahoma State is gonna be the favorite in basketball.
- 21:09Speaker 3: But in basketball we'll just say, we'll just say the
- 21:12Speaker 3: Eastern Conference.
- 21:14Speaker 2: I don't know, man, you just it's I don't know
- 21:17Speaker 2: if you can get a handle on on what's going
- 21:21Speaker 2: to happen in the playoffs based on what's happened in
- 21:23Speaker 2: the regular season.
- 21:25Speaker 3: I don't.
- 21:25Speaker 2: I don't think that that is so so we'll see.
- 21:29Speaker 2: I don't think anything the regular season carries over to
- 21:31Speaker 2: the playoffs.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Well, well you mean for the Knicks, Well, look, but
- 21:39Speaker 1: I think.
- 21:39Speaker 3: The Nicks have a great chance to get to the finals.
- 21:41Speaker 1: I do. I know, but you got to overcome Detroit.
- 21:44Speaker 1: I know they're going to be right up there with them.
- 21:45Speaker 2: So it's just the one thing I'll say Detroit two
- 21:50Speaker 2: years ago they won fourteen games?
- 21:52Speaker 3: Are they when when they played?
- 21:54Speaker 2: I remember they didn't even win a playoff series last year,
- 21:57Speaker 2: So how are they going to go from two years
- 22:00Speaker 2: ago being fourteen and sixty eight? They won forty four
- 22:03Speaker 2: last year? Are they going to get to the NBA finals?
- 22:06Speaker 2: Just me if it was Detroit against the Knicks in
- 22:09Speaker 2: a playoff series, I'm still favoring the Knicks.
- 22:14Speaker 1: By the way, Ryan's also recording his podcast We Do
- 22:16Speaker 1: Our Simon Fantasy in the studio over so, I mean,
- 22:18Speaker 1: we're all recording about this trade deadline.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Okay, wins now?
- 22:21Speaker 1: How is now? Which now features a Rangers trade. Pulio
- 22:27Speaker 1: has been traded.
- 22:28Speaker 3: So yeah, so that's what I think is going to
- 22:31Speaker 3: happen in the NBA.
- 22:33Speaker 1: As the Rangers trade Pulio now to Chicago. So they
- 22:38Speaker 1: didn't make a move right now. And it's now about
- 22:40Speaker 1: twenty five minutes before three o'clock, so we'll have to see.
- 22:44Speaker 1: But Lou, I mean, you're right, we haven't seen them
- 22:46Speaker 1: battle tested. Kate actually was his first year last year,
- 22:50Speaker 1: you know, in the playoffs, and.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yeah, being on that level, being on the on that
- 22:54Speaker 2: big time NBA level. No, you're correct, So I don't
- 22:58Speaker 2: think anything that we see in a regular season translates
- 23:02Speaker 2: to what we've going to see in the playoffs.
- 23:04Speaker 1: That's just nick Fans will say they missed Tibodeau. But
- 23:06Speaker 1: I like the fact that he gives other guys a chance,
- 23:08Speaker 1: like I like the Shamans of the world, and the
- 23:11Speaker 1: Coles are getting more playing time. It might make for
- 23:14Speaker 1: a better postseason. A lot of these guys get injured
- 23:16Speaker 1: every time around the second round of the playoffs because
- 23:19Speaker 1: it turned out from the first eighty two games, I mean,
- 23:22Speaker 1: that's what it is.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Well, did you see what's happening tonight? Uh? Jason Tatum
- 23:29Speaker 2: Y's back later.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Which is surprising to me.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Let's see how effective he is before we say anything
- 23:39Speaker 2: about how he's going to affect the Celtics.
- 23:43Speaker 3: But boy, he worked that doctor O'Malley, who I think.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Operated on at the hospital special surgery, the heck of
- 23:51Speaker 2: a job putting him back together so quickly.
- 23:53Speaker 1: All right, Well, you were in the NBA during those
- 23:56Speaker 1: NBA NBC years. I mean you watched the retro from
- 23:59Speaker 1: the other night. How exciting was that to see them
- 24:02Speaker 1: try and throw it back a little bit with Bob
- 24:03Speaker 1: Costas and all that. Did it bring you back to
- 24:06Speaker 1: those days or was it very very modern?
- 24:09Speaker 2: Well, unfortunately, the game was horrendous. The Spurs one by
- 24:16Speaker 2: forty five, they were winning. The game was over in
- 24:19Speaker 2: a second in the second quarter. Philadelphia arrested some guys,
- 24:22Speaker 2: which is which is terrible. But as far as having
- 24:25Speaker 2: Costas and and Doug Collins and Fortello and Hannah Storm, yeah,
- 24:31Speaker 2: that's great in those old graphics. And again that was
- 24:36Speaker 2: to me the nineties and the early two thousands and
- 24:40Speaker 2: the mid two thousands, that was the golden era, the
- 24:43Speaker 2: end of the golden era.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Of the NBA. So that's just me.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Well on those days, well, look and those are the
- 24:52Speaker 1: MJ days. And now who thought MJ would be finding
- 24:54Speaker 1: a championship team in race? And Nasca's right.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I mean, that's just shows you how great a competitor
- 25:02Speaker 2: he is and anything he did striving for excellence.
- 25:06Speaker 1: And look, I love that Last Dance series, but it
- 25:10Speaker 1: painted him as such an arrogant guy. I never realized
- 25:13Speaker 1: he was that arrogant until, like.
- 25:15Speaker 2: He's when you're a great competitor, you're gonna have to
- 25:21Speaker 2: have a little bit.
- 25:23Speaker 3: I'm gonna still one of your words. You can't be
- 25:25Speaker 3: milk toast. I win the championship.
- 25:29Speaker 1: All right, one last riff for you before we sign
- 25:32Speaker 1: off until the deadline to come down. We'll see, but
- 25:36Speaker 1: one more riffs. What if they released Gino so that
- 25:40Speaker 1: Tom Brady come out of retirement and be the mentor
- 25:43Speaker 1: for Fernando Mendos.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Well, I have a feeling that Brady will be the
- 25:49Speaker 2: mentor for U for Fernando Mendoza, he's not coming out
- 25:54Speaker 2: of retirement. I think he's having too good a life
- 25:57Speaker 2: hob nobbing around the world, going to the to the
- 26:00Speaker 2: Olympics and other big events and trying to rebuild the Raiders.
- 26:05Speaker 2: But somebody's gonna pick up Geno. I mean, a guy
- 26:07Speaker 2: can play, it's not like the guy can't play. And
- 26:11Speaker 2: we know how short the quarterback depth is in the
- 26:15Speaker 2: NFL right now. So I wish, I wish there was
- 26:19Speaker 2: a reason why the Raiders wouldn't pick Mendoz and let
- 26:22Speaker 2: him fall to the Jets at number two, But unfortunately
- 26:25Speaker 2: that's not going to happen.
- 26:28Speaker 1: So get a two year deal with New England, which
- 26:32Speaker 1: is interesting because either he's going to be moved up
- 26:35Speaker 1: or he's going to be a very rich backup. I
- 26:37Speaker 1: hate to say that way, but it's very interesting to
- 26:39Speaker 1: give him a two year deal. What do you think
- 26:40Speaker 1: the move is behind that?
- 26:42Speaker 2: Well, again, the best quarter the best drop to have
- 26:46Speaker 2: is to be the second or third street quarterback in
- 26:48Speaker 2: the NFL. Chase Daniel, who is now retired and he's
- 26:53Speaker 2: does a podcast and he's into broadcasting at the University Missouri,
- 26:57Speaker 2: played for a lot of NFL teams as a backup
- 27:00Speaker 2: some ridiculous amount of money and played it just a
- 27:02Speaker 2: handful of games over ten eleven year career.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Best job you can have. First of all, you learn
- 27:07Speaker 3: about the game. And for a guy like.
- 27:09Speaker 2: The Veto, if he doesn't get into another NFL regular
- 27:13Speaker 2: season game, he's picking up point just to be an
- 27:16Speaker 2: offensive coordinator, a quarterback coach, you know.
- 27:20Speaker 1: And but I think he's got a lot of chops.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I think he's got a lot of chops to him.
- 27:24Speaker 3: I really do.
- 27:24Speaker 1: I think he can be Oh.
- 27:25Speaker 3: I agree, he has a lot of chops, no question.
- 27:30Speaker 1: And he's learned. I mean he's a backup to a rookie,
- 27:32Speaker 1: which is so interesting because you know, I still consider
- 27:35Speaker 1: Drake not not seasoned at all. He's still a rookie,
- 27:38Speaker 1: you know, but he's actually he's still learning.
- 27:40Speaker 3: He's still in a learning process, no question.
- 27:44Speaker 1: That was just interesting. But hey, maybe they have some
- 27:46Speaker 1: plans for him to continue to mentor Drake. I don't
- 27:49Speaker 1: know exactly, but we'll have to see. All right, about
- 27:51Speaker 1: twenty minutes to the end of the trade deadline, I
- 27:55Speaker 1: don't know. I thought I was expecting a flurry. I'm
- 27:57Speaker 1: more of a flurry of things like I just.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Didn't seem as surprise too. The record for most trades,
- 28:05Speaker 2: it's thirty two. Was done a couple of times in
- 28:06Speaker 2: the last four or five years. Usually it's around twenty,
- 28:10Speaker 2: but this year, like, well, I don't even think we've
- 28:12Speaker 2: hit ten yet. The biggest trade, Alex the trade deadline
- 28:16Speaker 2: happened two months ago.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Quinn.
- 28:18Speaker 2: You was going from Vancouver to Minnesota, and Minnesota got
- 28:22Speaker 2: you know, they got a whole back, they got a
- 28:24Speaker 2: number one pick, they got Zev buying him back, they
- 28:26Speaker 2: got Marco Rossi back, and they got another young player back.
- 28:30Speaker 2: And I can't remember his name, but that was the
- 28:33Speaker 2: biggest trade. And that happened on December twelfth.
- 28:36Speaker 1: By the way, Ryan updated after daming because I told
- 28:38Speaker 1: him on podcast with you. He said it's a first
- 28:41Speaker 1: rounder of the Islanders gave up. So that's very interesting
- 28:43Speaker 1: that they would give him a first rounder for him.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Okay, I wonder if it's theirs or if it's Colorado's
- 28:51Speaker 2: because remember they have Colorado's pick this year, which is
- 28:54Speaker 2: going to be near thirty.
- 28:56Speaker 1: So and last, we all know Quinn wants to be
- 29:02Speaker 1: a Devil. He wants to be with his brothers. I
- 29:03Speaker 1: don't know that will ever happen.
- 29:04Speaker 3: But well, I wonder.
- 29:06Speaker 2: I was wondering if their Olympic experience, Quinn winning the
- 29:13Speaker 2: quarterfinal game with the overtime goal, Jack winning the gold
- 29:17Speaker 2: medal with the overtime goal in the in the final,
- 29:21Speaker 2: I wonder if that brought them even closer. This Olympic experience,
- 29:28Speaker 2: I would again he has next year. Billy Gren' is
- 29:32Speaker 2: a really good general manager. I think he's gonna try
- 29:37Speaker 2: to keep him, gonna try to sign him, you know,
- 29:40Speaker 2: so we'll you know, we'll see. I would love to
- 29:43Speaker 2: see him with the Devils, I mean I really would.
- 29:46Speaker 2: I'm surprised the Devils haven't made a trade today. I'm surprised,
- 29:49Speaker 2: but I don't know what's gonna happen there I don't
- 29:52Speaker 2: know if the coach is gonna get fired, Sheldon Keith,
- 29:54Speaker 2: I don't know if Tommy Fitzgerald's gonna get released as
- 29:56Speaker 2: general manager. But that's a team that had after starting
- 30:01Speaker 2: eight and one has failed miserably.
- 30:05Speaker 1: The way to say, they have a lot of talent
- 30:09Speaker 1: on that team too, but absolutely.
- 30:13Speaker 2: A ton of talents in their prime years, not old
- 30:17Speaker 2: in their prime years.
- 30:19Speaker 3: So this very very very disappointing year for the New
- 30:23Speaker 3: Jersey Devils. I have to think that Jackie scored that
- 30:26Speaker 3: golden goal.
- 30:27Speaker 1: I keep thinking yeah, and I keep think him back
- 30:29Speaker 1: to the trade headline from a few years ago when
- 30:31Speaker 1: the Rangers out right missed out on Jake gunsl Like,
- 30:34Speaker 1: I really thought he would be a great addition here
- 30:36Speaker 1: and just dury to not pull the trigger, and then
- 30:39Speaker 1: all of a sudden he trades everybody. It's like if
- 30:41Speaker 1: Dolan didn't see the ineptitude, then I I don't know
- 30:44Speaker 1: what it'll take, But you make a good point. I
- 30:47Speaker 1: think that he knows how to put the puck in
- 30:50Speaker 1: the net. He's not afraid he'll get you know, he'll
- 30:53Speaker 1: get into that those dirty areas in front of that.
- 30:56Speaker 3: I'm a big Jake Gunseill fan and he's also uh,
- 31:00Speaker 3: you know, a.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Gold medalist, so you know, yeah that that is that right.
- 31:05Speaker 1: That trade that that was a big miss for the Rangers.
- 31:08Speaker 1: But you know, we're all trudged a law here in
- 31:11Speaker 1: New York, it feels like with the hockey scene. So
- 31:14Speaker 1: love to see. But I was going to say the
- 31:17Speaker 1: other thing about all this, especially around these headlines, is
- 31:21Speaker 1: doesn't bring the question all these contracts, at least the
- 31:24Speaker 1: Rangers that I could think of it. I mean, the
- 31:26Speaker 1: Islanders sounder guy for eight years, has he lived up
- 31:28Speaker 1: with expectations? Ability to start asking these questions, hey, has
- 31:32Speaker 1: laughy lived up to his eight year expectation? He has not.
- 31:36Speaker 1: In fact, then they got in that contract extension. He
- 31:38Speaker 1: was crap, he was not. No, I don't understand it.
- 31:45Speaker 3: You're right, and it's going to be Fox.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Been dealing Fox have been dealing with injury. I understand
- 31:50Speaker 1: that that that's part of why his seven year deal.
- 31:53Speaker 1: You haven't seen him in his full potential. So I
- 31:57Speaker 1: don't know. But after asking these questions, when you see
- 32:00Speaker 1: the deadline come around and see them keep them guys,
- 32:03Speaker 1: and then I forgot the eight year guy. I think
- 32:05Speaker 1: it was a defensiveman that you guys signed for eight years,
- 32:07Speaker 1: wasn't it The Islanders.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Yeah, a roman Off and he got hurt early on
- 32:15Speaker 2: for the you know in Dallas when he took that
- 32:18Speaker 2: shot from from Rantin and h.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Islands miss him.
- 32:23Speaker 2: He's their best, stay at home, hard hitting defenseman. And
- 32:27Speaker 2: but he'll be back next year.
- 32:28Speaker 1: And I feel, like I said in Baseball man, like
- 32:31Speaker 1: I feel like baseball where a guy he signs all
- 32:34Speaker 1: these extensions and then uh, he gets injured. I mean,
- 32:38Speaker 1: Trout's famous unfortunately famously got locked into that ten year
- 32:41Speaker 1: deal with the Angels. And that's still you talk about
- 32:44Speaker 1: free agent signings of any of anybody, that's the one
- 32:47Speaker 1: that hurts the most to see and athlete get locked
- 32:49Speaker 1: down like that, and then I want to move him.
- 32:53Speaker 1: It's almost like torture. I hate to say it that way,
- 32:56Speaker 1: you know, but it feels like that.
- 32:57Speaker 2: And he will not talk bad about Moreno or the
- 33:00Speaker 2: Angels organization. He I mean, I was watching reading yesterday.
- 33:05Speaker 2: He will not talk bad about the organization.
- 33:08Speaker 1: And by the way, pretty damn good. He came back
- 33:11Speaker 1: and hit four hundred last year, I think so. I mean,
- 33:15Speaker 1: he's still got a pop to him.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Yeah, he does, but he actually had his worst statistical
- 33:21Speaker 2: year since his half year rookie year when he brought
- 33:25Speaker 2: him up at the end of the season. It's a shame,
- 33:28Speaker 2: great great player. I mean, he won three MVPs early on.
- 33:32Speaker 2: He probably could have won five.
- 33:36Speaker 3: And uh, it's a shame, it really is. And he
- 33:39Speaker 3: started going to be thirty.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Five and they had that you're talking about that team.
- 33:44Speaker 1: I remember, and I feel like an old guy in
- 33:46Speaker 1: the rocking chair right now, but I remember when it
- 33:48Speaker 1: was him and Otani and there was another guy there,
- 33:51Speaker 1: and you thought they were gonna win with those guys.
- 33:52Speaker 2: And it just one last thing, you know, you're hear
- 33:58Speaker 2: that that the Hani's people, his agents, brought the Dodger
- 34:05Speaker 2: deal back to the Angels with the deferred money, the
- 34:08Speaker 2: exact same deal, and Audi Moreno said no. If that's true,
- 34:17Speaker 2: that is why one of the worst decisions Audi Moreno
- 34:20Speaker 2: could have possibly made. If he came back to the
- 34:24Speaker 2: Angels one last time, and if that's accurate that story
- 34:28Speaker 2: and he prevented and he presented the Angels with that
- 34:30Speaker 2: deal and the Angels didn't take it.
- 34:34Speaker 3: That is nuts.
