- 2:20Speaker 3: Message that was delivered by a repulsively wide away boy
- 2:23Speaker 3: missing at to front row center, arrived at sixth and
- 2:26Speaker 3: the Am. And it come in two parts. The first
- 2:29Speaker 3: scrawled in black ink and a wrinkle piece of paper,
- 2:31Speaker 3: said marlow get hold of a taxi cab closes the
- 2:34Speaker 3: driving yourself at exactly eight o'clock this morning, come past
- 2:37Speaker 3: eighty eight forty, I thought, then drive signed Holland Schindler.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Second half it made more sense. It was printed in
- 2:44Speaker 3: neat letters on nitha green paper, and under an engraving
- 2:48Speaker 3: of Benjamin Franklin read one hundred silver dollars in payable
- 2:52Speaker 3: to the bear on demand. So at exactly eight o'clock
- 2:55Speaker 3: I was behind the wheel of a hired cab, leather jacket, peek,
- 2:57Speaker 3: cap tooth thick, and all within hate taxi distance of
- 3:00Speaker 3: number eighty eight forty as the poll at Sheendler around
- 3:03Speaker 3: man in square clothes with haircuts to match was not
- 3:06Speaker 3: like there, Yes, Sir cav.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Of course I do think I am shouting my head off.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I want to go to the international airport. You understand
- 3:16Speaker 2: the international airport at Ingleboard.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Okay, okay, Inglewood International Airport.
- 3:20Speaker 2: It is.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Malomnida. Quick put the flag down. Every minute I'm being.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Batchuh oh yeah, watched by whom, mister Shendler.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I don't know. Now, listen carefully, Marlow.
- 3:34Speaker 5: Later you have to go to the Hallemaana Hotel and
- 3:37Speaker 5: wait for a young lady named Lene Collier. Then at
- 3:41Speaker 5: the hour she designates you go to her house number
- 3:45Speaker 5: forty four Diamond Hip Circle and pick up the cloth.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Wait a minute, Halle Moana like diamond? What is it?
- 3:51Speaker 3: The hotel isn't by any chance in Hawaii?
- 3:53Speaker 5: Is didn't I mentradition my note? No you didn't, or
- 3:56Speaker 5: did you mention picking up a cloak? There just proofs
- 3:59Speaker 5: I haven't been myself ever since yesterday. Yesterday I received.
- 4:03Speaker 2: This anonymous letter that both mark Honolulu.
- 4:07Speaker 5: All it says is Mayha may have cloak of golden
- 4:10Speaker 5: feathers will.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Bring no less than death.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Oh great Mallow.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Have you ever been to the island?
- 4:16Speaker 3: Yeah? Twice, one time business in one's pleasure. But then surely.
- 4:20Speaker 2: You've heard people speak of King Tomeha Mayha.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I do. He was back around the
- 4:25Speaker 3: seventeen eighties, right yeah, yeah, yeah, big organizer Kakawa who
- 4:28Speaker 3: by driving the defenders over the cliffs that divides the
- 4:31Speaker 3: island in.
- 4:31Speaker 5: Two in the Pali. Oh yeah, now plow. The feathered
- 4:35Speaker 5: cloak that Mayha may have war was about a hundred
- 4:39Speaker 5: square feet and every inch of it a gold and
- 4:43Speaker 5: yellow feather and value that's more than half a million dollars.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Hey, I'll come the feathers.
- 4:49Speaker 5: They are from the now extinct black mammo bird mallow.
- 4:54Speaker 2: There was only one yellow feather on each.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I gotta explain why they're now extinct. But don't tell
- 5:00Speaker 3: me that all this is a game of Calia tomorlow
- 5:01Speaker 3: the Shendlo where a cloak that belongs to the museum, no.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Malo edition with the cloak you speak of. But Lani
- 5:08Speaker 2: Colia has another one the valuable.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Of course it's one quote the side, but it also
- 5:14Speaker 5: belonged to the king, and it also is made of
- 5:17Speaker 5: the priceless.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Weather, and it just have property that haven't a whole
- 5:20Speaker 3: legal life.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Yes, a Laniers Redy about twenty five, went to fashionable
- 5:26Speaker 5: schools here in California, and as a result cares more
- 5:30Speaker 5: about fun and pretty close and she does the priceless heirloom.
- 5:34Speaker 3: I can't understand that.
- 5:35Speaker 5: So for fifty thousand dollars, I have bought the PLoP
- 5:39Speaker 5: to rese help.
- 5:40Speaker 3: To a New York millionaire for almost rie that time.
- 5:43Speaker 5: He loves the island lord.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I was right, I'm still being followed.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Don't look back right first, don't do nothing exactly as
- 5:53Speaker 5: I want it now, whoever it is would follow me,
- 5:57Speaker 5: not you, And when I am an Honolulu.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Will still follow me.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Well, I take care of the business on hand.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Yes, there's a reservation for you on then explain.
- 6:05Speaker 5: So after you leave me and collect your cabs here,
- 6:08Speaker 5: which will be five hundred dollars to drive away. Then
- 6:11Speaker 5: leader Mallow get back here. I've bought your plane an underway.
- 6:14Speaker 3: That's to night. When I've got the cloak, take.
- 6:16Speaker 5: It back to your hotel room at the Haleemana and
- 6:18Speaker 5: sit on it half.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Because unless I am.
- 6:21Speaker 5: A complete success to the decoy, you will have your
- 6:24Speaker 5: share of trouble too. I'm sure the mallow from a
- 6:28Speaker 5: specific direction is for a car.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I do not know.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I got the five hundred bucks to cover expenses why
- 6:40Speaker 3: Hanolulu tripping was told to keep the change. I can
- 6:43Speaker 3: my apartment, I pack got another cab, sit International Airport, Inglewood,
- 6:47Speaker 3: settle back to think about the crossroads in the Pacific. There.
- 6:50Speaker 3: I was wrong, because in the next minute those that followed,
- 6:53Speaker 3: everything was done the hard way. First we ran out
- 6:56Speaker 3: of gas and got tied up in a traffic jam,
- 6:58Speaker 3: and after that got stopped from speeding, all of which
- 7:00Speaker 3: headed up to me at the airport, just in time
- 7:02Speaker 3: to watch my plane take off without me. A few
- 7:13Speaker 3: minutes later, when I told that cherubi clerk in a
- 7:15Speaker 3: grave flannel and insipid smile, that my name was Philip Marlow,
- 7:18Speaker 3: and that I wanted a reservation on the next flight,
- 7:20Speaker 3: which was leaving in an hour, things got even worse.
- 7:23Speaker 4: You can't be Philip mollow, Sir, That is not the
- 7:26Speaker 4: fit of Mallow who was on flight twenty one that
- 7:28Speaker 4: just left you.
- 7:30Speaker 3: You have a reason for saying that my mode certainly too.
- 7:34Speaker 4: There were thirty six seats on that plane, shirt and
- 7:36Speaker 4: when she took off, all thirty six football I know,
- 7:40Speaker 4: I know, I checked them myself, and I don't make
- 7:42Speaker 4: a mistake.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Well, bully to you, boy. But I happen to be
- 7:46Speaker 3: both Philip Marlow and the man who was supposed to
- 7:48Speaker 3: be on that plane also. But I'm just about out
- 7:50Speaker 3: of patience. How do I get on the next planet?
- 7:52Speaker 3: Don't I come on? I can't stand any decision?
- 7:54Speaker 2: Will you? What will miss themlow?
- 7:58Speaker 3: I think it can be a that's better.
- 8:00Speaker 4: As a matter of fact, I'm almost sure of it.
- 8:19Speaker 3: An hour later, the last California slipped over the horizon
- 8:22Speaker 3: and there was only clear sky, red. Oh. I began
- 8:27Speaker 3: to relax, drifted pleasantly frosted Hawaiian punches, warm white beaches,
- 8:37Speaker 3: lovely land, and I opened my eyes again. Diamond Head
- 8:52Speaker 3: was in front of us, and majestic in the red
- 8:54Speaker 3: globe of evening some that gave all of the lush
- 8:56Speaker 3: Mouna valley, I could see a texture of thick felt
- 9:00Speaker 3: We landed like the airport was made of marshmallows. And
- 9:03Speaker 3: a half hour later I was in my lobby of
- 9:05Speaker 3: the Hollijuana Hotel. It was cushioned rat tan and Philippine
- 9:09Speaker 3: mahogany over cool tile, and everywhere laughing sunburned people wearing
- 9:13Speaker 3: anything from Catalina swimsuits, the peat fabricated hula skirts. So
- 9:18Speaker 3: smiling both inside and out, I worked briskly to the
- 9:20Speaker 3: reservation desk and told a good looking Hawaiian and white
- 9:23Speaker 3: finel that I was Philip Marlow. But at his reply
- 9:26Speaker 3: I stopped smiling, both inside and out.
- 9:28Speaker 6: But sir, your reservation was taken two hours ago. There
- 9:31Speaker 6: must be some mistake, some mistake. You are Philip Marlow, sir, yes,
- 9:37Speaker 6: so right. And look I've been through this before today
- 9:39Speaker 6: because what I thought was an error.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Nothing. Yeah, I'll talk to you later. There was a
- 9:48Speaker 3: large circle of mirror on the wall behind the clerk,
- 9:51Speaker 3: and even as we had talked, I caught the reflection
- 9:52Speaker 3: of a beautiful tan girl and coco brown suited, white
- 9:55Speaker 3: pearls and no stockings, with the mention of my name,
- 9:58Speaker 3: and then a take that made a long blonde hit
- 10:00Speaker 3: whipped straight up. When she saw me watching her, she
- 10:03Speaker 3: pivoted sharply on a spiked heel and hurried tad little
- 10:05Speaker 3: Nye under the Banian tree, where there was Hawaiian music
- 10:08Speaker 3: and a lot of different looking people drinking at the
- 10:10Speaker 3: glass top tables under a three quarter moment. I stayed
- 10:13Speaker 3: near the reservation desk long enough to light a cigarette.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Then I followed her. She was seated away from a
- 10:18Speaker 3: lovey entrance, and on a hunch that she just might
- 10:21Speaker 3: be Lanny Kallier, I started for an empty table next
- 10:24Speaker 3: to her by the middle aged Chinese and gay Gabardine
- 10:27Speaker 3: and Panamata Madge slipped into the chair that I was after,
- 10:31Speaker 3: so I forgot about being subtle and addressing her as
- 10:33Speaker 3: missus Kyllia introduced myself as an old and dear friend
- 10:36Speaker 3: of Poullat Schindler's one Leland Dunn. This is a pleasant surprise,
- 10:41Speaker 3: mister Dunn.
- 10:42Speaker 7: But tell me how did you know what I looked at?
- 10:44Speaker 3: Pollard Schindler's accident doesn't happen as vocabulary and miss Kallier, oh,
- 10:48Speaker 3: he used the right adjuctant to believe.
- 10:49Speaker 7: Me I'd loved you. But I can't, mister Dunn, because
- 10:54Speaker 7: Pollard Chindler never saw me in his life. All our
- 10:57Speaker 7: business was done by telephone.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Okay, my mistake. I'm Philip Marlow, honey, and I want
- 11:02Speaker 3: to know when we rendezvo at forty four Diamond Head
- 11:04Speaker 3: Circle for the Club of Ka Mayor.
- 11:07Speaker 7: Look, you're no more Philip Malo than you, Alieland Dunn.
- 11:11Speaker 7: And if you need a reason, it's because I just
- 11:13Speaker 7: left Philip Marlow's tape.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Look, baby, there's only one Mallow. That's me. I can
- 11:16Speaker 3: prove it.
- 11:17Speaker 7: I'll bet you can forge papers and all. I've already
- 11:20Speaker 7: been warned to watch for imposters, So quit wasting both
- 11:23Speaker 7: your time and mine and.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Get out of my way. I've got things to do.
- 11:27Speaker 7: Saw proof that you were actually Commanda himself.
- 11:30Speaker 2: No thanks, mister s.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Now. I had two clues. One an obvious party would
- 11:40Speaker 3: assume the name of Philip Malo, and the other Ronny Callier,
- 11:43Speaker 3: less obvious, more intrigument So figuring the road company, Mallow
- 11:47Speaker 3: would keep by followed line. Why this time it was
- 11:50Speaker 3: getting into a long yellow covertible. Before I got to her,
- 11:53Speaker 3: she lurched from the curb, So I ran across the
- 11:55Speaker 3: street to what I thought was a taxi. I was wrong,
- 11:58Speaker 3: because it turned out to be a showpen women's either
- 12:00Speaker 3: being helped in by a small swarthiat of a dubious
- 12:03Speaker 3: lineage in a wrinkled cotton uniform was the Chinese and
- 12:07Speaker 3: gay Gabadeen and Panamata match who had been sitting near
- 12:10Speaker 3: us in a Lunai. What counted mall was that he
- 12:12Speaker 3: obviously sensed my problem. You wish to follow the girl, sir, Yeah,
- 12:17Speaker 3: you know it's a it's a love dispatch. You know
- 12:19Speaker 3: what I mean?
- 12:21Speaker 5: I think so Judah quickly, Yes, sir, you know where
- 12:29Speaker 5: she's going to?
- 12:29Speaker 3: I'm not sure. Maybe diamond head circles. Maybe it's cleaning
- 12:33Speaker 3: to well, let's make a diamond head circle. Is there
- 12:35Speaker 3: a fast away? They are a short cut?
- 12:36Speaker 5: Oh, yes, there is, Judah begayl yep, yep, which means
- 12:41Speaker 5: what means never mind diamond head circle.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Drive fast to the factory instead, and do not move mister.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Monow follow Oh heybe artillery? Okay, fu manshew? What's with
- 12:53Speaker 3: the factory?
- 12:54Speaker 5: You out of the way until the cloak of Kamehameha.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Is mine, which won't work, believe it or not. Clever one,
- 13:00Speaker 3: there's another fill of molow at the moment is a
- 13:01Speaker 3: lot closer to that collection of fancy feathers than either
- 13:03Speaker 3: of us. Love this stupid bit for freedom.
- 13:07Speaker 2: They will not get you anymore.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Got up, we hit. I slipped with this gun and
- 13:16Speaker 3: jok the handle of the door and jumped. I got
- 13:18Speaker 3: the night feet I was on the side walking broad
- 13:19Speaker 3: but better off in the China Boy. It was right
- 13:21Speaker 3: over the back of the front seat. A crowd that
- 13:23Speaker 3: included a towering Hawaiian policeman who promptly told my hostman
- 13:26Speaker 3: shut up, gathered in that hurry. So I ran for
- 13:28Speaker 3: a cab, gave the driver a ten bucks. The address
- 13:30Speaker 3: I wanted and took off. The street on which Lena
- 13:38Speaker 3: Caya lived was a neat curving strip that rose sharply
- 13:41Speaker 3: from sea level up into the shadow of Diamond did itself.
- 13:44Speaker 3: We were there in less than ten minutes, finding number
- 13:47Speaker 3: forty four was something else. Another thirty minutes disappeared before
- 13:51Speaker 3: we finally parked away from the place, which was glass
- 13:53Speaker 3: in ConA wood but behind a thick grove Dave Parks.
- 13:57Speaker 3: I told the driver to back down the hill without
- 13:59Speaker 3: using this motor, and I slipped into the grounds and
- 14:01Speaker 3: carefully moved toward the house until what I thought was
- 14:04Speaker 3: the trunk of another palm stepped into my path. I
- 14:07Speaker 3: stop where you are, which was over six and a
- 14:11Speaker 3: half feet. There was a shock of fighting red. The
- 14:14Speaker 3: whole frame was half covered in dirty yellow shirt. Once
- 14:16Speaker 3: upon a time, white ducks and bedded brown sandals who
- 14:19Speaker 3: are you someone with an appointment to see miss Callier?
- 14:22Speaker 3: Why you belong to this place? Yes? And this place
- 14:25Speaker 3: belongs to me as well, all of it, Miss Collier included,
- 14:28Speaker 3: She's mine to protect you. Understand that Malay Heini Malowitch
- 14:33Speaker 3: l Lahiney Greenhorn tourists a kind that I hate, A
- 14:36Speaker 3: kind that's ravaging all that beautiful, steering the islands from
- 14:39Speaker 3: those they belong to. Take it easy, Red, I'm not
- 14:41Speaker 3: here to stick your pretty island in my pocket when
- 14:43Speaker 3: you're not looking well. I want his words with Monny Collier,
- 14:46Speaker 3: he like the rest and trying with cunning in the
- 14:48Speaker 3: seat to turn her head away from these shores and
- 14:51Speaker 3: toward the mainland where you come from. I won't stand
- 14:53Speaker 3: for it. I know we break this round table up
- 14:56Speaker 3: and get to the house. I'm in a hurry, but
- 14:59Speaker 3: I'm sure that Lani will be on my side, so
- 15:02Speaker 3: sure and fact that we really shouldn't disturb the flower?
- 15:05Speaker 2: Should we?
- 15:17Speaker 4: In just a moment the second act of Philip Marlow.
- 15:19Speaker 4: But first, this Wednesday night, Fred Allen will be bing
- 15:22Speaker 4: Crosby's special guest under Bingals CBS half hour of Laughter
- 15:26Speaker 4: and Music. Earlier this Wednesday The winner of the one
- 15:29Speaker 4: thousand dollars prize and the Doctor Christian Prize contest will
- 15:33Speaker 4: also be announced by Gene Herscheld, star of CBS's Doctor
- 15:36Speaker 4: Christian Show and Don't Forget That Drout Show. Marx and
- 15:39Speaker 4: Burns and Allen will also be here on most of
- 15:41Speaker 4: these same CBS stations this Wednesday.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Now with our star Gerald Moore.
- 15:47Speaker 4: The second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story, The
- 15:50Speaker 4: Cloak called Kamea.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Maya red headed lunatic with a slow, soft voice and
- 16:05Speaker 3: fast hard fit, took me by surprise. I wound up
- 16:08Speaker 3: flat on my back before I realized he so much
- 16:10Speaker 3: as moved. By that time, I got to my feet
- 16:12Speaker 3: and took after him. It was spreading for a vando
- 16:14Speaker 3: a thicket and had a thirty yard lead, so all
- 16:17Speaker 3: he needed to lose me completely, and I finally untangled
- 16:20Speaker 3: myself from the jungle. I came out on the road.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Then I heard a motor behind me, so I do
- 16:25Speaker 3: for the underbrushing angel with the heavy car wrought line.
- 16:32Speaker 3: I had seen it before, in fact, I'd been in.
- 16:35Speaker 3: It was a limousine that belonged to the Chinese. The
- 16:38Speaker 3: back seat was empty, but the half cash show for
- 16:40Speaker 3: Jolo was crouched behind the wheel, like his life to pandodize.
- 16:44Speaker 3: And as I walked back toward the house, I saw
- 16:46Speaker 3: that the door was standing open, spilling a shaft of
- 16:49Speaker 3: yellow light across the tor crowns. I started up the
- 16:52Speaker 3: walk when it came a second later, Ani kaye first
- 16:55Speaker 3: into the path of light and ran to the open door.
- 16:57Speaker 3: I went after a quarter of my one armage front
- 16:59Speaker 3: of a round.
- 17:00Speaker 2: No, let me go.
- 17:01Speaker 8: What happened?
- 17:01Speaker 3: Why you scream?
- 17:02Speaker 2: Line?
- 17:03Speaker 9: Back there in the pond, I heard a noise. When
- 17:05Speaker 9: I came outside, I found him there.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Oh, come on, show me.
- 17:12Speaker 9: I talked to him just a few minutes ago. Yeah, no,
- 17:17Speaker 9: it's gone. He is dead with a knife in his Yeah.
- 17:23Speaker 9: Looked down in the water.
- 17:29Speaker 6: Yes, my.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Skin on my neck crawl As Lunny tagged the thing
- 17:39Speaker 3: in the lily pond with my name. He was faced
- 17:42Speaker 3: down in the shallow water and three inches of crooked
- 17:44Speaker 3: steel and the ugly curved handle of a crisp stuck
- 17:47Speaker 3: straight up between his shoulder places. Somebody had made a
- 17:51Speaker 3: very grim mistake. It took five minutes of argument, my
- 17:54Speaker 3: thorough checking of all the credentials I carried convinced the
- 17:57Speaker 3: badly frightened lunny right body out of the water and
- 18:00Speaker 3: up onto the grass, and I went through his pockets.
- 18:04Speaker 3: What did you find the god the Hawaiian Island Art
- 18:08Speaker 3: Products Company Limited Number twelve harve the street mean anything? No,
- 18:14Speaker 3: I've never heard it. What's that on the back flight
- 18:17Speaker 3: number and departchet time of the plane I was supposed
- 18:19Speaker 3: to take out of Los Angeles very easy. He's been
- 18:23Speaker 3: one jump ahead of me all the way right up
- 18:25Speaker 3: to your lily pond here? Tell me, was anyone with
- 18:27Speaker 3: him when you getting the cloak? A half cast in
- 18:29Speaker 3: a shelfy's uniform.
- 18:30Speaker 7: No, I gave him the cloak just Schindler had instructed
- 18:34Speaker 7: me too.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I listened, Lennie, there was a down at the heel
- 18:36Speaker 3: redhead here just before you came out. He claimed to
- 18:39Speaker 3: be a friend of yours.
- 18:41Speaker 7: Yes, that must have been Lawrence conquering.
- 18:42Speaker 3: The pot, making him runt it these days. Lawrence wrote
- 18:46Speaker 3: one great.
- 18:47Speaker 7: Poem years ago about two lovers who leaped to death
- 18:50Speaker 7: over the valley keep from being separated, and the soul
- 18:54Speaker 7: was turning to birds. It's still very popular here in
- 18:56Speaker 7: the What happened? It's got the habit of rounding himself
- 19:00Speaker 7: in gym and now the natives call him Papooli crazy one.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Yeah, well that's closer. He's always hanging around.
- 19:09Speaker 7: My mother wanted me to marry him at one time,
- 19:11Speaker 7: and that she's deady, he thinks he should look after me.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Okay, Lonnie, let him keep thinking. So what do you mean?
- 19:17Speaker 3: I mean you can use a good watchdog right now?
- 19:19Speaker 3: So when Cochrane comes back, make him park on your Doorstef,
- 19:21Speaker 3: you stay inside and be careful. A guy's named Philip
- 19:25Speaker 3: Marlow getting knives in that back. So I've got a
- 19:26Speaker 3: few things to do myself. But fat I could borrow
- 19:29Speaker 3: that souped up convertible of yours.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Where you're going?
- 19:31Speaker 3: Number twelve Harvest Street and the Hawaiian Island Dodd Products
- 19:34Speaker 3: Company Limited. Harper Street was a narrow, twisting alley two
- 19:45Speaker 3: blocks below King Street. A social saw guessho where the
- 19:49Speaker 3: derelicts the specific quietly founded and died. Those were the
- 19:53Speaker 3: damned crevices between warehougers. However, Number twelve turned out to
- 19:57Speaker 3: be a practically blank wool. There was one small window
- 20:01Speaker 3: high up the door, with a heavy iron grill over
- 20:04Speaker 3: the glass. On which Hawaiian Island, Dot Products Limited. Ik
- 20:07Speaker 3: Lee President was made. It in small black letters and
- 20:10Speaker 3: a thin passageway blocked by an iron gate at the
- 20:12Speaker 3: side of the building. A light burned inside, but the
- 20:15Speaker 3: door was locked. So after I'd ruined my shoe shine
- 20:18Speaker 3: and skinned all my knuckles, I managed to climb over
- 20:20Speaker 3: the gate and edge down the passageway to the rear.
- 20:24Speaker 3: I could hear water running. It's a marble pomfrom the plague.
- 20:27Speaker 3: In the center of a walled garden as oriental as
- 20:29Speaker 3: the Forbidden City. I eased across its rigid datd insto
- 20:34Speaker 3: an open door, peeped in, and then gaged for my gun,
- 20:38Speaker 3: because sitting inside at the sleek, white mahogany desk was
- 20:42Speaker 3: the Chinese in the Panama.
- 20:45Speaker 5: Well, this is it somewhat unexpected donal events. See, be
- 20:51Speaker 5: careful with that gun, won't you.
- 20:53Speaker 3: You'll be carefull, Lee, You won't have to worry about
- 20:55Speaker 3: the gun. Tell me something. Why'd you break in next
- 20:58Speaker 3: to get Kimmaa's cloak. You know it will happen if
- 21:01Speaker 3: you try to sell it.
- 21:02Speaker 5: My good man, I can sell that cloak every day
- 21:05Speaker 5: for the rest of my life. A few feathers at
- 21:07Speaker 5: the time.
- 21:08Speaker 3: The world must be full of feather collectors.
- 21:12Speaker 5: I manufacture the beautiful feather lace that islanders way on
- 21:16Speaker 5: the head. And while the bird is extinct, desire for
- 21:20Speaker 5: its leaving feathers, is not one or two golden mammo
- 21:24Speaker 5: feathers in each lay. And instead over me one hundred
- 21:27Speaker 5: dollars apiece, I can get double that triple. Now do
- 21:32Speaker 5: you understand, mister Moller?
- 21:35Speaker 3: And you know you got things a little mixed up,
- 21:37Speaker 3: haven't you? Licha, your boy Marlow is dead Atlantic Cartier's place.
- 21:43Speaker 5: Oh no, that was a mister blake and easily accessible gentleman.
- 21:48Speaker 5: I hired a main street in Los Angeles. He only
- 21:52Speaker 5: pretends to be for obvious reasons.
- 21:55Speaker 3: The feather cloak.
- 21:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I've known all about Parlor Chindler's land since the inception.
- 22:02Speaker 3: I followed every move he made.
- 22:04Speaker 5: In fact, was I who caused all your trouble on
- 22:07Speaker 5: the way to the airport this morning by means of
- 22:09Speaker 5: a bribe to your driver.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Too bad, you won't be able to keep your nest
- 22:12Speaker 3: line with Kamanda's bathrobe after all, Lee, because I'm gonna
- 22:16Speaker 3: walk out of here with it all big chunks of
- 22:18Speaker 3: your face, your name it, where's the cloak? Now?
- 22:22Speaker 2: I gather from this that you do not have it, mister.
- 22:25Speaker 3: That's what's known as a shrewd observation.
- 22:28Speaker 5: And that mister Schindler, as I suspect, as tricked as
- 22:32Speaker 5: both just stolingly.
- 22:33Speaker 3: I'm wanning and start talking.
- 22:34Speaker 2: That's all I.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Wanted to find out. Almost black magic Jona can break
- 22:49Speaker 5: him back if I tell your behave Schindler has the cloak,
- 22:55Speaker 5: no doubt about it. So I must find him at
- 22:58Speaker 5: what with no interference from you to marrow.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Uh jodo. You heav his gun, so lock him inside.
- 23:08Speaker 3: I may meet him later. Something that half cast it
- 23:14Speaker 3: under my spine at the edge of his hand. My
- 23:17Speaker 3: legs were paralyzed. I felt like the practice done me in.
- 23:21Speaker 10: A school for chiropractice ridoyed my body when I moved,
- 23:27Speaker 10: so I didn't move until the feeling who's back into
- 23:30Speaker 10: my legs.
- 23:32Speaker 3: And I wabbled to my feet and looked around. It
- 23:36Speaker 3: was a small high window i'd seen from the street,
- 23:39Speaker 3: a heavy chair, a desk with a lamp, and something
- 23:41Speaker 3: like a like a picture framed a bamboo on the wall.
- 23:46Speaker 3: I glanced at him fresh kept looking hard for a
- 23:51Speaker 3: long long time, until I finally realized what it meant.
- 23:54Speaker 3: The answer to the whole thing was contained in that
- 23:56Speaker 3: bamboo frame. I had to get out and get out fack.
- 24:02Speaker 3: I unplugged the lamp, plasted my back against the wall
- 24:04Speaker 3: next to the door, and tapped on the lamp shade
- 24:06Speaker 3: to intrigue Joelo at the coming in. It worked, and
- 24:09Speaker 3: I turned slowly. I threw the lamp op at the window.
- 24:12Speaker 3: The crash brought the door open with a jerk, and
- 24:14Speaker 3: the jerk stepped in with my gun in his hand.
- 24:16Speaker 2: What going on here, mister? Where are you? Hansome?
- 24:20Speaker 3: Right here? Joe? Okay, I get up. I got the
- 24:23Speaker 3: magic to show you a trick I learned in Kansas.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Call the haymaker. Ran down the wall of the street
- 24:31Speaker 3: door and out of the cubs with no traffic problem
- 24:33Speaker 3: with that hour. So I channed the gas fed with
- 24:35Speaker 3: the floor and held it there right through the heart
- 24:37Speaker 3: and Mount Logo and up the twisting road that led
- 24:39Speaker 3: to the mountains back of the city, the echoing Road,
- 24:41Speaker 3: the motorist and tunnel through the forest lining the road
- 24:43Speaker 3: was finally replaced by another row within the unending gale,
- 24:47Speaker 3: which shrieked through a precipitous past three thousand feet above
- 24:50Speaker 3: the city a polly. I swung the car to the
- 24:53Speaker 3: side of the road and ran the rest of the
- 24:54Speaker 3: way out to where the rocks rose to a knight aage.
- 24:58Speaker 3: They dropped the sheer a thousand feet of the Then
- 25:01Speaker 3: I spotted him, Donnie, lying at the cliffs agent's handing
- 25:04Speaker 3: over us, his red hair ripped by the wind, with
- 25:06Speaker 3: the mad island toys concas the lord and flapping around
- 25:09Speaker 3: his shoulders like a pair of huge gold wings as
- 25:12Speaker 3: a cloak of command.
- 25:13Speaker 8: Man, Oh, no, no, no, don't weep my I alayil
- 25:19Speaker 8: afraid of the first come loney, don't let me because
- 25:25Speaker 8: you're down. No, Laddy, you're the man one. You think
- 25:29Speaker 8: you're gonna tell your treasures and leave the island. Your
- 25:33Speaker 8: destiny is not.
- 25:37Speaker 9: Yours.
- 25:38Speaker 2: None try to warn.
- 25:40Speaker 8: Ship there, for the four kept on might kill his pannier.
- 25:44Speaker 8: The man you gave the cloak too, and I kill
- 25:47Speaker 8: a thousand times again. Keep you here with me.
- 25:51Speaker 2: You belong to the island.
- 25:53Speaker 8: Money like this cloke, lie.
- 25:56Speaker 5: We must never leave.
- 26:00Speaker 8: Over soon, and our souls will try the bird and
- 26:04Speaker 8: live forever. This holiday, I.
- 26:10Speaker 5: Don't back money. Hello, I know, I know.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Are you all right?
- 26:20Speaker 5: Money?
- 26:22Speaker 2: I am all right.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Look the cloak how my subaster as he felt the
- 26:29Speaker 3: wind brought it back to me.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Strange.
- 26:33Speaker 7: I don't want to touch it ever again.
- 26:36Speaker 3: I know, I know what you mean. I'll carry it.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Come on, money, let's carry.
- 26:54Speaker 5: And nothing like ham and eggs and put black coffee
- 26:56Speaker 5: in the morning fronts big one forgetting ugly night, write
- 26:59Speaker 5: my things.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Right, mark coffee film. Oh thanks, Lenning. So Lee was
- 27:06Speaker 3: picked up by the Hanolulu police. Huh sure, I had
- 27:09Speaker 3: to all set up.
- 27:10Speaker 2: You spent some time in prison, and by the way,
- 27:16Speaker 2: he was still unconscious, and.
- 27:18Speaker 3: He got to him. What in the world to hit
- 27:20Speaker 3: jo with?
- 27:21Speaker 2: Marlow?
- 27:22Speaker 3: Enthusiasm mainly, And that's when you got away and came
- 27:26Speaker 3: up to the Pariay, well, how did you know.
- 27:29Speaker 2: It was Laurence?
- 27:30Speaker 3: And well it's all tied with that one popular poem
- 27:33Speaker 3: that Cochrane had written, Leanni. That anonymous letter you've got
- 27:36Speaker 3: in Los Angeles, mister Shendlow was a line from that poem, Oh.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Kabah house, floake of golden feathers ring, no list? How
- 27:49Speaker 2: did you find it out? Marlow?
- 27:51Speaker 3: I see when I was locked up in Lee's factory.
- 27:53Speaker 3: I saw a full copy of the poem on the
- 27:54Speaker 3: wall in a little bamboo frame. When I came to
- 27:58Speaker 3: that line you just quote it stuck out like it
- 28:00Speaker 3: was pointed in Neon. See for me that peg Cochran
- 28:03Speaker 3: is the killer going on that hun shy. I try
- 28:06Speaker 3: to look at things from his angle. He was a murderer,
- 28:08Speaker 3: sure to be caught, desperately in love, insanely possessive of
- 28:12Speaker 3: everything he thought belonged here in the islands. He was
- 28:14Speaker 3: no unbalanced lush as well the rest of its figured.
- 28:17Speaker 3: That's all my se. Mohney was cornered.
- 28:21Speaker 7: He went back to the one important thing that he'd ever.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Done, exactly, Lanni. He was lost. So he identified himself
- 28:27Speaker 3: with the hero of his poem and sook that is
- 28:29Speaker 3: the only way out.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Amazing, truly an amazing thing.
- 28:34Speaker 7: It's a terrible thing too, mister.
- 28:36Speaker 3: Yeah, we all got what we went after, didn't we,
- 28:39Speaker 3: each of us, even Lawrence cockran after Schindler left to
- 28:54Speaker 3: catch a plane to the mainland. Lanni said Aloha and
- 28:58Speaker 3: left to get ready for our date. I sat on
- 29:00Speaker 3: the Lanaia the hotel and watched the sweep of the Pacific,
- 29:02Speaker 3: from Diamond Head to the hills across the harbor, A
- 29:06Speaker 3: white slam of white ke green shallows of the reef,
- 29:10Speaker 3: the purple depths beyond. As a warm wind whispered through
- 29:14Speaker 3: the ponds. From somewhere, I heard the sound strum of
- 29:18Speaker 3: the ukulelean. It suddenly occurred to me it doesnt Lohart
- 29:23Speaker 3: really mean?
- 29:48Speaker 4: The Adventures of Philip Marlowe Bringing You Raymond Chandler's most

- 30:14Speaker 4: Richard Urunt. He showing me witness again next week, when.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Philip marlow says, this time a dead witness, one hundred
- 30:25Speaker 3: thousand dollars bribe, the eyes of a beautiful dreamer and
- 30:28Speaker 3: a corpse in a tool bin. We're all tied tight
- 30:31Speaker 3: to the same thing, a fox's tale.
- 30:50Speaker 4: This is Roy Rowan speaking for CBS. The Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 31:09Speaker 4: This is Andrew J.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Graham, author of the web surface series Oh and a
- 31:13Speaker 3: Man AND's Wife.
- 31:14Speaker 10: You're listening to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well for listeners who have been listening to
- 31:28Speaker 1: the show for a while, this may seem a familiar story,
- 31:31Speaker 1: and with good reason. The script was originally used on
- 31:37Speaker 1: the Adventures of Philip Marlow back on April the twenty
- 31:41Speaker 1: third of nineteen forty nine. Because of lost episodes and such,
- 31:47Speaker 1: we actually played that episode back on October the twenty
- 31:53Speaker 1: second of note of two thousand and fourteen, so it's
- 31:58Speaker 1: been a little less than a year for us. But
- 32:01Speaker 1: still this is a storyline worth repeating, with a lot
- 32:05Speaker 1: of mystery, intrigue atmosphere, just a great tale. Of course,
- 32:11Speaker 1: there had been a couple of scripts that were somewhat
- 32:13Speaker 1: derivative of prior episodes, but this was the first full
- 32:19Speaker 1: out and out repeat and it was, as I said,
- 32:23Speaker 1: a very well done story and worth playing again. All right, Well,
- 32:27Speaker 1: now we turn to listener comments and feedback, and we
- 32:32Speaker 1: start with a comment email from Catherine, who writes, I
- 32:37Speaker 1: could swear that Missus Demrist was voiced by Lucille Ball
- 32:42Speaker 1: on this week's Adventure of Philip marlow Do you have
- 32:45Speaker 1: any way to verify that love your podcast? Keep up
- 32:50Speaker 1: the good work, well, Kate. An answer to your question now,
- 32:54Speaker 1: I do not believe that Missus Demerist was voiced by
- 32:58Speaker 1: Lucille Ball. This episode that you're referencing was The Seahorse Jockey,
- 33:05Speaker 1: which aired in nineteen fifty. By that point in her career,
- 33:09Speaker 1: Lucille Ball was already a pretty established star. She hadn't
- 33:13Speaker 1: made I Love Lucy yet, but she was the female
- 33:18Speaker 1: lead on My Favorite Husband and had been in a
- 33:21Speaker 1: lot of movies. Simply put, if Lucille Ball was starring
- 33:25Speaker 1: on Adventures of Philip Marlowe at that point in her career,
- 33:29Speaker 1: we would definitely know about it, because I would have
- 33:32Speaker 1: been named in the credits, and the CBS probably would
- 33:36Speaker 1: have made a big deal about it. There's a certain
- 33:39Speaker 1: economics when it comes to the way that detective shows
- 33:44Speaker 1: tended to function. You would have the star of the
- 33:48Speaker 1: show who would earn a decent salary. Em and O'Brien
- 33:52Speaker 1: during his time on Johnny Dollar, for example, earned five
- 33:57Speaker 1: hundred dollars a week. It was a pretty good money
- 34:01Speaker 1: back for nineteen fifty nineteen fifty two, and generally you
- 34:07Speaker 1: would have the lead actor. Maybe some of the actors
- 34:11Speaker 1: who have recurring roles paid a bit more, but everyone
- 34:15Speaker 1: else would be paid by union scale. And if you
- 34:18Speaker 1: only worked one radio show a week and you got
- 34:22Speaker 1: paid union scale, you could probably eat, but you wouldn't
- 34:26Speaker 1: eat too well. However, the nature of radio work was
- 34:30Speaker 1: it didn't require a whole lot of rehearsals. There may
- 34:34Speaker 1: just be one rehearsal and then recording, and if you
- 34:38Speaker 1: appeared on enough of these shows in a given week,
- 34:42Speaker 1: you could make a very good living. And that's why
- 34:46Speaker 1: we have so many episodes where Harry Bartel, or Herb
- 34:50Speaker 1: Vigrant or Howard mcneer make an appearance. These are people
- 34:54Speaker 1: who knew how to act, were professionals in the radio industry,
- 34:58Speaker 1: and could play a wide variet character roles and could
- 35:02Speaker 1: do several in a week and manage to make that
- 35:05Speaker 1: union scale work. You wouldn't have Lucille Ball coming out
- 35:10Speaker 1: to appear on a detective show, Philip Marlow or anybody
- 35:14Speaker 1: else's to work union scale in nineteen fifty The shows
- 35:20Speaker 1: that you would hear Lucille Ball in would be an
- 35:23Speaker 1: episode of something like suspense or locks radio theater. Who
- 35:28Speaker 1: would give her real star money. Outside of those big
- 35:32Speaker 1: anthology shows, when we're listening to a great detective story,
- 35:38Speaker 1: the big thing you can spot are the character actors,
- 35:40Speaker 1: the alan reives and that sort. Then we also do
- 35:46Speaker 1: have a comment on Facebook where Francis says love Gerald
- 35:52Speaker 1: Moore's voice. Well, thanks so much for your comments. That
- 35:55Speaker 1: will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with
- 35:58Speaker 1: Nick Carter and join us again next Wednesday for another
- 36:02Speaker 1: episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. In the meantime,
- 36:05Speaker 1: send your comments to Box thirteen at Greatdattractives dot net,
