- 0:00That arrow fire moment coming back into Queen of Shadows, your
- 0:03breath thrown a glass shout out. That one class inspired me to be
- 0:06like Heather when you're out about, like, fuck around a
- 0:09little bit. Magic of to move that class,
- 0:11really. Sad about applying to be on
- 0:14Survivor. I got a client that tells me
- 0:17that I need to do survivor like all the time.
- 0:19Like crawling through this muddy Creek bed.
- 0:24Look at all. These sticks, so many sticks.
- 0:26Living. Sticks, sticks, welcome to the
- 0:28Go Wildly podcast, where the trail or river is our studio and
- 0:33the outdoors is where the story all unfolds.
- 0:35I'm Heather. And I'm Emily.
- 0:37And at the heart of it all is. One big.
- 0:39Question we ask our guests What is that one pivotal outdoor
- 0:44story that changed the course of your life?
- 0:46From transformative hikes to river epiphanies and everything
- 0:50in between, stories like these remind us how nature shapes who
- 0:54we are. So thanks for being here.
- 0:56Stick around and together we're go wildly.
- 1:00Thanks. Guys.
- 1:01We love you. Today on the Go Wildly podcast,
- 1:05we have Diana Mutula, A clinical herbalist, certified movement
- 1:09coach, an all around earthy. Powerhouse.
- 1:12She's a Level 3 move not trainer, restorative exercise
- 1:15specialist. And Anas.
- 1:18M Certified personal trainer who blends natural movement with
- 1:22herbal medicine to help people reconnect with their bodies in
- 1:25the wild world around them. In Part 1, we deep dive into her
- 1:28experience earning her Move Not certifications, What it's really
- 1:32like attending one of her Move Not classes, and the community
- 1:35that she's built around that. Don't forget to watch our
- 1:37YouTube companion film to this episode where we dig deeper with
- 1:41Diana and hike the amazing Bolt Mountain in Southern Oregon.
- 1:45Here we go. So, yeah, so OK, now that we're
- 1:50at the summit here, let's hear about how you became an outdoor
- 1:55professional and what your relationship with the outdoors
- 1:59is now that you're an adult. Your childhood started very
- 2:03infused in outdoor experiences. And how have you maintained that
- 2:09into your adult life and why? And how do you stay wild?
- 2:15Yeah. Let's see, how do you how do you
- 2:17go wildly? Well, once I started doing some
- 2:24certifications in national movement, first it was really
- 2:28just to learn about my own body and to be able to move better
- 2:33for the things that I was doing at the time, which was farming.
- 2:36And then I just got so passionate about it that I was
- 2:40like, wait, this is all I want to do.
- 2:41I want to learn more about this and I want to ultimately then
- 2:45teach other people about it. And so after I did the
- 2:48restorative exercise certification with Nutritious
- 2:52Movement Institute that was talking again about more
- 2:55alignment and corrective exercise and lifestyle and
- 2:59really foundational like baseline micro movements that
- 3:07become distorted because we're not most people aren't living a
- 3:11lifestyle that's rich in natural movement.
- 3:15Then I got after I finished that, I got inspired to do the
- 3:19move net certification because that addresses bigger movement
- 3:23skills and was the more exciting thing really.
- 3:27But I felt like I finally developed the confidence in how
- 3:32to just exist as a person and how to stand and walk and sit
- 3:37and live in my house and and then do my farming too in a
- 3:42better way. It's better bio mechanics.
- 3:44But then I did the move out certification and I was like, Oh
- 3:46my God, this is absolutely everything.
- 3:48This is the end all be all. This is all I want to do now.
- 3:51Move not is a natural movement based fitness system that really
- 3:57is meant to be expressed fully in an outdoor environment.
- 4:02And so their idea is that nature is the ultimate training
- 4:06environment because nature has the ultimate amount of diversity
- 4:10in it. Different textures, different
- 4:13obstacles, different scenarios, balancing scenarios, climbing
- 4:17scenarios, lifting and carrying scenarios, that climbing
- 4:21scenarios that you would encounter if you're just an
- 4:24outdoorsy person. And if you did end up in a
- 4:30survival situation, those are also the skills that you would
- 4:32absolutely need to get yourself to safety and, and to survive.
- 4:37So then I just got really excited about applying the
- 4:39natural movement skills that I was learning and also
- 4:43integrating that into my own hobbies of just hiking and
- 4:48camping and backpacking. And so it kind of all came
- 4:50together. And now I coach people on the
- 4:56skills and show them the corrective exercises and talk to
- 5:01them about lifestyle. But I also like to practice that
- 5:04in, you know, my daily life and make an make outdoors a bigger
- 5:09part of my life so that I can continue to practice the things
- 5:13that I coach people on as well. So it's a hobby, it's a
- 5:16profession lifestyle, it's a practice, it's a lifestyle.
- 5:21And I also really like to take people that I'm coaching out
- 5:25into the outdoors and have them get to implement it.
- 5:30So I do hikes and trail runs with groups of people and it
- 5:36gets to really like express what we learn in a gym setting.
- 5:41So if you work in the gym, you can replicate natural movement
- 5:44scenarios with, you know, gym equipment.
- 5:46And so that's where you can like probably get to implement your,
- 5:52your training of natural movement in a way that's a
- 5:55little bit more achievable, doable and realistic to like
- 6:00integrate into daily life. If you can't always get outside,
- 6:04you can always take it in an into an outdoor setting.
- 6:06And then that's when it's at its ultimate peak expression.
- 6:10So cool. Yeah, because it is the
- 6:13lifestyle of moving naturally. It applies in every living
- 6:19scenario. It applies from getting your
- 6:22groceries from the store into your house and putting them
- 6:24away, to chopping wood and filling your woodshed, to
- 6:30lifting and carrying your kids from the car into the classroom
- 6:36into chasing kids around. And it's all, it's all
- 6:40integrative into just real human life.
- 6:44Yep. Real human experiences getting a
- 6:46frisbee out of a tree in the park.
- 6:48You know, I get a lot of questions about like, why would
- 6:50I need this skill? Why would I need this movement?
- 6:53Why would somebody need to vault over something?
- 6:57It's like, first of all, maybe you never will.
- 7:01But. Wouldn't you like to be able to
- 7:03if you had to, or if you just wanted to?
- 7:05Because it is fun, and it's also useful and practical.
- 7:08I felt when I did the class, even though it's a little bit
- 7:12avant-garde from your normal routine of movement, I totally
- 7:17felt like a kid again. Yeah, doing like kid movements.
- 7:20And I was just, it kind of unlocked something in my brain a
- 7:23little bit of like, I need to be doing these.
- 7:26Like why? Why shouldn't, why can't I?
- 7:28Why like, why haven't I been doing these funky little
- 7:31movements and they're so weird and fun and I'm a kid again and
- 7:36with all the agility of a little spry little kid.
- 7:39So it's really cool. I was like I said, when I get
- 7:42some moolah, I know that's such a it's, you know, but that's.
- 7:48Once you learn it, then you just apply it everywhere, right?
- 7:52Like you don't need, I mean, you need money to, you need money to
- 7:55benefit from Diana's wonderful coaching, but you don't need
- 7:58money to move naturally in your life.
- 8:01Exactly, You don't need money to go outside and.
- 8:05Pick up a rock and walk around with it.
- 8:07A heavy rock. Not a, not a, not a Pebble.
- 8:10To step up and down and over things and balance on things.
- 8:13And so you can, you can practice it in all these different ways.
- 8:16You can practice it in a self-guided way.
- 8:18You can practice it in an explorative way with a lot of
- 8:21curiosity. Well, just fun it.
- 8:24Kind of inspired me that one class inspired me to be like,
- 8:28Heather, when you're out about like fuck around a little bit
- 8:30more, you know, just like have fun and like, what is that like,
- 8:33OK, cool, pick up the rock. OK.
- 8:35Do you know play on the playground with my kids?
- 8:38You know, like. Balance on the sidewalk as
- 8:40you're walking down, or on the curb as you're walking.
- 8:42Down the street that inspired me for that However, I do would
- 8:47like to say that that was my friend I was talking about.
- 8:51I would like to say that like being in that group environment,
- 8:55it was such a fun class to be had that was like the, you know,
- 9:00gym based natural movement fun like and I would love when I do
- 9:06get some money to be involved because it was very community
- 9:08centered as well. Like everybody was homies.
- 9:11I didn't feel weird. It wasn't like, I don't know,
- 9:14the gal that has the yoga mat next to me.
- 9:16It was awesome. Right.
- 9:18So that is one that is everything you were saying is
- 9:22the reason why I love movement. Natural movement, of course is
- 9:28just something that is every like accessible to everyone and
- 9:32so is move not to. But to distinguish move not is a
- 9:36company, a fitness system that I am an instructor for, that I
- 9:40teach certifications for and that I'm certified, certified in
- 9:44to teach the method. So it's a method and system of
- 9:48organizing natural movement into categories and into principles
- 9:55and into a curriculum that then we can teach in classes.
- 9:59And so that's just the distinction.
- 10:01And so I teach a move not class. What was I going to say about
- 10:06that? Oh, and it's just a really great
- 10:09way to, yeah, to showcase the move Not methodology that
- 10:14ultimately delivers like what natural movement has to offer.
- 10:18And Move Not has developed these.
- 10:21I think there's over 10 principles.
- 10:23I'm not going to be able to remember all of them, but they
- 10:27kind of highlight the essence of what natural movement is because
- 10:31sometimes it's hard to explain. So some of the things that are
- 10:36the principles for natural movement in the Move Not system
- 10:38are, first of all, Move Not is evolutionary or sorry, natural
- 10:44movement is evolutionary. It means we evolved doing these
- 10:47types of movements. It's what our bodies are
- 10:50designed to do. They're designed to move
- 10:52naturally, which includes all these different types of
- 10:54movements, different categories of movements like getting up and
- 10:58down, moving on the ground, crawling, balancing, stepping
- 11:02over, under, across things, climbing, vaulting, jumping,
- 11:08lifting and carrying things, manipulating things, throwing
- 11:11and throwing and catching things, etcetera.
- 11:14So evolutionary and then universal is along with that,
- 11:20where it applies to every single person in the whole world.
- 11:23It's for everybody. And then there's a collaborative
- 11:27nature to it. So that's what you were talking
- 11:28about as well, where natural movement is collaborative.
- 11:31You need to be able to exist with other people, and sometimes
- 11:36you need to move things with other people or you're all doing
- 11:40collective tasks together where some people are doing one type
- 11:43of national movement, the others are doing another.
- 11:45And again, it goes back to being evolutionary, where it's like
- 11:48ultimately a village. We evolved as a village to
- 11:52gather resources collectively together.
- 11:55So then there's other parts of the principle that have to do
- 12:00more with it being playful and fun and it being something that
- 12:05you can get curious about. And I love that too, because
- 12:08people do say that and it feels like getting to be a kid again.
- 12:12And I think that first of all, part of that is just because we
- 12:15are reconnecting with movement that we did as a kid and that we
- 12:18stopped doing. So in that way it helps us be
- 12:20like a kid. And in that way, I kind of wish
- 12:23it, it had been something that we've been continuing to do this
- 12:26whole time. But if you look at it through
- 12:28bringing in that aspect of exploration and curiosity and
- 12:33play, then 100% that's what every almost everybody says when
- 12:38they come to the classes is that get to feel like a kid again.
- 12:41And they get to just explore and find out what they can do and,
- 12:46you know, try, just try things, really.
- 12:48Just try. Yeah, I just was like fucking
- 12:51around. Exactly.
- 12:52So fun to like. Well, just in that particular
- 12:55class where it was, you know, a more funky class than your
- 13:00normal structured situation. But like those movements, we
- 13:03were just, we were all figuring them out at the same time, which
- 13:06was really cool. And it's so different than other
- 13:09fitness modalities that most people are doing traditional
- 13:12strength training. Pilates.
- 13:14High intensity interval training or CrossFit or Pilates or yoga,
- 13:18like those are all movements and there's movements in all of them
- 13:24that translate into the other systems.
- 13:27But they are even in like a yoga community, it is still like
- 13:31you're alone on your mat and you're not interacting with the
- 13:34person next to you. When your strength training,
- 13:37you're like in the zone, you're on your move and you may be
- 13:41building gym community. But when you're in this group,
- 13:46small group fitness class, like you're with each other in every
- 13:51single village, right? It's when I first started the
- 13:55class, I was coming from that traditional, modern, traditional
- 14:00fitness where like I know people in the gym, but I was working
- 14:04out on my own and I was like, these are gym people.
- 14:07These are the people I'm going to see at the gym.
- 14:09And that's where our relationship will stay.
- 14:12And, and after like four or five months, I was like, Oh no, these
- 14:16are my friends and I see them, I talk to them every single day.
- 14:20I see them minimum three days a week.
- 14:23And like, they very quickly became some of the most involved
- 14:28people in my life. Like they know more, they know.
- 14:32About what's going on in my life before.
- 14:34Like my best. That doesn't happen in a yoga
- 14:36class really, unless maybe you go to a like a.
- 14:39If you go to a yoga. Teacher.
- 14:41Training and like you're in this collaborative learning
- 14:44environment for a short period of time you may build those
- 14:47relationships and just. To put it in perspective, this
- 14:50move not class is at one of our like premier gyms in the area.
- 14:55And so there's like the class within this bigger gym and I
- 15:00have gone to the this gym, you know, on and off for years.
- 15:05And I've never experienced the sense of fun and community in
- 15:09their yoga class, right, that this class has.
- 15:14I'm so happy. To hear that stick up the move
- 15:16that class really. And I do think that there is a
- 15:20uniqueness that your guys are describing that is specific to
- 15:24the class that that like to our group originally I created and
- 15:28then now it's even the class is a collaborative class.
- 15:32Like I take requests from people constantly from participants and
- 15:38get feedback and the class starts to just like evolve.
- 15:42It has evolved over time. Like I love being able to be
- 15:45like, hey, I did this movement in my real life today and I felt
- 15:51tired by it. Or I feel like I'm missing some
- 15:54kind of strength there. Can we do something in class
- 15:57that enhances this? Like the other day I was like I
- 16:00just got tired like shaking out my comforter.
- 16:04How can I build strength in this way in class battle ropes.
- 16:09Like OK, now I'm shaking these fucking. 4050. # ropes and now
- 16:14when I go to shake out my comforter like I have the
- 16:17muscles and strength to do that more effectively.
- 16:21And you can play around with the technique and make it more
- 16:24efficient and build the strength and the muscle memory.
- 16:28I also love one of the things that I love about just being a
- 16:30personal trainer. First off, whether I'm working
- 16:33with an individual person or the group in the move not class is
- 16:37like solving puzzles like that. Survivors.
- 16:41Movement, that is my favorite. Something you're saying you're
- 16:45doing in real life. How can we replicate that?
- 16:48How can we recreate it and like? Pulling somebody out of the
- 16:51water when you're in your raft. What?
- 16:53Do you thought it was a fun day have?
- 16:54You thought about applying to be on Survivor?
- 16:58I have a client that tells me that I need to do survivor like
- 17:01all the time. I'm obsessed with survivor, so
- 17:03that's why I like put it out. I have I like grew up on
- 17:06survivor so but but you would do so good.
- 17:09Well, I don't know about the social.
- 17:10I don't manipulative actual. Part either, I kind of don't
- 17:13want to deal with any of that. Yeah, I would like go for the
- 17:16fun, fun to doing the physical challenges.
- 17:18Yeah, I tell Sean I'm like I my dream job is working on Survivor
- 17:22as like one of their testers of all the challenges.
- 17:25I know that'd be cool. The thing is that I get to do to
- 17:29a certain extent a lot that in my move now class already like
- 17:33of course we're not on an island with water underneath us, but
- 17:37we. Do go.
- 17:38On adventures, on the weekends, we go trail running weekly.
- 17:43That's like a bonus activity that we've all just done as a
- 17:47community, just for free and as friends, but it's open to
- 17:51whoever wants to come along. And then sometimes like once a
- 17:54month, ideally once a month, we'd be going for a hike.
- 17:58Like I think of them as like move, not outings.
- 18:01We're going on move not adventures where the people who
- 18:04do my class and or people that hear about the free offerings
- 18:08can join in. And then we actually do go do
- 18:11this in outdoor settings and. Well, I think that creates
- 18:14goodwill too in a marketing standpoint.
- 18:17It is so nice to have something where like people can just like
- 18:21get a sense of the community first.
- 18:22Maybe that's what they are thinking about.
- 18:26Like right now in my lull of my monies, I'm like, oh, I can
- 18:32still go on the group run and be with this community that's
- 18:35really cool. And then like still be connected
- 18:37to them. Yeah.
- 18:39I told Mitch that we do a trail run also as a like, hey, if
- 18:43you're not quite ready to engage in the class setting or that
- 18:47timing doesn't work for you, like we also do this trail run
- 18:49on Saturdays. And yeah, anybody's welcome to
- 18:52join. Yeah.
- 18:52OK. Should we do these fun little
- 18:54questions that I have brought? Let's do this kind of just like
- 18:57fun try to, you know, have a nice rounded out so it's
- 19:04concise. You know how podcasts.
- 19:06I'm not super long winded answers that's hard for me.
- 19:09I will try to do my. Best.
- 19:10You're doing great. I think you're doing really good
- 19:12so far. I just want to be.
- 19:14Yourself. Gemini totally don't.
- 19:16Yeah. I just want to make sure it
- 19:17like, you know, all comes together.
- 19:21If you, if the land could write your biography, what chapter
- 19:27would it be on right now and what would the title be?
- 19:31How fun. Oh my goodness, I have no idea.
- 19:35I know, I know. I thought about this, Emily.
- 19:37I'm like, I should have, we should give these these fun
- 19:40questions ahead of time so we can kind of like think about it
- 19:43a little bit. But also, it's kind of, I mean,
- 19:45you don't have to like have an answer on the show.
- 19:46Like, it's OK. It's natural to like, take a
- 19:49minute. I'm in.
- 19:50Taking the view. I'm in the middle for sure.
- 19:53How old are you? 35, Cool.
- 19:56I'll be 36 this summer. Nice.
- 19:58Yeah, few months actually. July or well or June?
- 20:01July. June.
- 20:01Okay. June 30th.
- 20:02I'm July 4th. Our birthdays are so close
- 20:05together. And you're gonna turn 36.
- 20:07Yeah. What?
- 20:08Yeah, Oh my gosh. For birthday buddies, I finally
- 20:12found a well. If you want, we're going.
- 20:14I know this is totally tangent, but we're going to the Cowboy
- 20:18Dinner tree. Have you ever tried the Cowboy
- 20:19Dinner tree? Over there.
- 20:20Have you ever heard of that? OK.
- 20:22Should I explain it a little bit?
- 20:23Yes, yes. And you were invited as well.
- 20:26So it's this little off grid hole in the ground like Cowboy
- 20:32did like hole. In the ground, not a hole in the
- 20:34wall. Hole in the ground.
- 20:36Well, there is a hole in the ground over there in that area,
- 20:39but it's a, it's like east of Bend.
- 20:43Yeah, east of Bend And it is. It's a.
- 20:49It's a. Insect, I believe.
- 20:53Oh really? I don't I think so.
- 20:54It's either an insect or AI love it or I love that sound.
- 20:57OK so it's a hole in the wall type of restaurant but cowboy
- 21:02dinner tree it is literally what you think it is.
- 21:05So you call and you make a reservation and you get 2
- 21:08choices and it's either chicken or steak.
- 21:12They bring out you a whole. Chicken or.
- 21:15And, and it's all like in like courses and or a like huge 48
- 21:22ounce steak, like giant. It's pretty expensive too.
- 21:26I can't remember how much my dad said that it ended up being,
- 21:29but, and I've gone there a couple times on my birthday,
- 21:32like always on my birthday. I've gone there twice on the 4th
- 21:34of July, so this will be my third time.
- 21:36And but it is like crazy like the wood creeks.
- 21:41There's like it's like kind of dusty.
- 21:42It looks like an old saloon. There's teepees out front.
- 21:46They cook everything like non electric.
- 21:49So they bake the bread or they're like dinner rolls are
- 21:52like giant. And I think it's like in some
- 21:54sort of like a wood or old school oven type of thing.
- 21:58It's great. It's cool.
- 21:59But we're going to go over there and do some like, like what is
- 22:03it called? I forgot what the kind of
- 22:05camping is called. Not in a campground.
- 22:07Glamping. No, not glamping.
- 22:08It's boondocking. Boondocking.
- 22:10Yeah, boondocking over there. And then we're also going to go
- 22:13to the. We don't know if it's open, but
- 22:16it's like the oldest bar in Oregon in Paisley OR Saloon.
- 22:21We're going to try to hit that. And then there's the Summer
- 22:24lake. We're going to go to Summer
- 22:25Lake. So the Summer Lake.
- 22:28I've been wanting to go there. And then we're just going to
- 22:30kind of tool around. My dad and I are going to set up
- 22:32a anyway. So birthdays are very close
- 22:34together if you don't have anything planned for doing.
- 22:36That I don't get. Are you going on 4th of July?
- 22:40Yeah, we have the reservations on 4th.
- 22:43Nice, I'm at cancer kayak camp all of July so I I can't do
- 22:48anything in July pretty much. Except some random pods.
- 22:52Yeah. I'll come meet you down at
- 22:54Muriel. Yeah, for a pod.
- 22:55Well, I'll be I'll be at like just below Almeida, so.
- 22:59OK, cool. Yeah, OK, that sounds amazing.
- 23:03I don't have any plans. I think about it.
- 23:05I will think about it. And I've been wanting to go to
- 23:07Summer Lake, so it's gonna be pretty.
- 23:08Fun. I'm excited.
- 23:10Yeah, that sounds really fun. Last year, for Diana's birthday,
- 23:13we hiked. Mount McLaughlin.
- 23:14We hiked. Mount McLaughlin, It was the
- 23:15major movement outing of the year that we trained for, at
- 23:20least that we had in mind that we were training for.
- 23:22So that's cool. I would do it again.
- 23:24Yeah. That's not everyone wanted to do
- 23:25it again. I would do it again.
- 23:27I don't think I, I think I'd. Do it again now.
- 23:30Like right when we were doing it and when we finished it, I was
- 23:34like, fuck no, I'm never doing that again.
- 23:35But take a. Break for our phones.
- 23:37Just because. It OK, yeah, I think I could
- 23:39answer your question though. Let's do it.
- 23:42Yeah, you had some time to. Oh, wait.
- 23:44So let's here I'm gonna. I think that I would do it.
- 23:48I think I've built enough strength and endurance now more.
- 23:54I've built more strength and endurance now that I could.
- 23:59I could do it and I would have a lighter pack.
- 24:02For sure. And that's, you know, we look.
- 24:04That's on my bucket list this year if I can get over my
- 24:07migraine situation. Right.
- 24:09But hit us up for sure. Yeah, we've done it and.
- 24:13I would do and I want to do Thielsen too.
- 24:15I want to do Thielsen too. Yeah, there's another girl in
- 24:17the class, Gabby. She's been saying that she wants
- 24:19to do. Cool, cool.
- 24:21OK. So let me read again chapter.
- 24:23Diamond the Land could write your biography.
- 24:27What chapter would you be on right now and what would the
- 24:29title be? Yeah, I would definitely be in
- 24:32the middle. I don't know about the title,
- 24:34but I'm definitely in the chapter where like the female
- 24:38main character has discovered her powers are like a lot
- 24:44stronger than she originally thought, you know, and and then
- 24:49she's training them and she's she's already gone through quite
- 24:53a few of the like, training montages.
- 24:56And so now she has some, like, missions and she's prepped and
- 25:00ready for them. Cool.
- 25:01And she's going to go take them on hills, tackle some
- 25:05challenges. So yeah.
- 25:09Is this a multi book series or is this one long always?
- 25:15Great. I mean, I guess like it's if you
- 25:19think of the different eras of your life as like different
- 25:22books, then it would be a multi book series for sure.
- 25:27I'm thinking which? Book in the series Are we at?
- 25:29Four out of eight. OK, you know an air of fire
- 25:35moment coming back into Queen of Shadows.
- 25:37If you regret throwing a glass, shout out.
- 25:38Oh my. God, Dan is obsessed.
- 25:43I'm obsessed. I.
- 25:43Need to I'm so. On my everyone.
- 25:46Needs to read this book. Series every female at least
- 25:51yeah. Title.
- 25:52Hmm. So if Selena is the Queen of
- 25:55shadows and I would be the queen of barefoot, queen of feet, I'm
- 26:02like thinking of like mountains and sun and barefoot, barefoot
- 26:08sunshine. Badass queen goddess energy.
- 26:13Yeah. I love that.
- 26:15But like fitness too. But like.
- 26:19This footness. OK, here's another one that I
- 26:22think will get us a little deeper.
- 26:25What's 1 pivotal outdoor moment, big or small, that rerouted your
- 26:32internal compass forever? It's a good core.
- 26:37Memory, well move not Level 3 is the hardest certification and
- 26:42move not system it's the advanced certification.
- 26:46It's like 5 days long, done only once a year and it's pretty big
- 26:52deal. And I signed up for it in 2019
- 26:58and I had only just done the 1st 2 levels earlier that year.
- 27:01So it's a little bit of a fast trajectory to try to go right
- 27:05into Level 3 for contacts. Level 1 and 2 are done in a gym
- 27:11setting with visits to the park to kind of play around and get
- 27:14some outdoor time. Level 3 is entirely outdoors and
- 27:19you're camping pretty much the whole time.
- 27:21So it was pivotal because I in hindsight, like I didn't, I
- 27:28wasn't actually like really physically ready for it yet.
- 27:32But I also was because you don't need to go to Level 3 knowing
- 27:39that you can for sure do every skill that they're going to
- 27:43cover in it. And so I didn't pass the
- 27:46certification in the moment, but also hardly anybody does, like
- 27:51probably 5% of people that attend actually pass while
- 27:55they're there. So I think it's more of an
- 27:58experience of self discovery and assessment of where you're at.
- 28:01And also just to gain so much inspiration because I was
- 28:07learning a lot while I was there and I hadn't really known what
- 28:11to expect. So I got introduced to skills
- 28:14that I've never done before, like balancing really, really
- 28:21high up off the ground, like 6 feet off the ground on a narrow
- 28:26rail. And then having to do that while
- 28:30also like incorporating like lowering down your center of
- 28:33gravity, crawling on it, coming down into a hang, doing a
- 28:38strength climbing skill to get back up on top of the rail and
- 28:41then keep walking. And like, I didn't know that
- 28:43that was what we were going to be tested on.
- 28:45You just are supposed to do it in hindsight, like I could have
- 28:50asked more questions to find out what I was supposed to do.
- 28:53But things like that. There was the last day of the
- 28:58event was this barefoot hike that we all did as a group.
- 29:02And it was, it was actually a barefoot run that was led by the
- 29:06instructors, like running ahead of us.
- 29:08And then kind of like they had one person behind at the end
- 29:11catching the, the people at the end.
- 29:13But they're, they would like tell us like, OK, get down and
- 29:16crawl on the ground. And we'd be like crawling
- 29:19through this muddy Creek bed. And then we'd be like, all
- 29:23right, now find a partner and carry one person on each other's
- 29:26back, you know, piggyback carry or whatever for 100 yards.
- 29:30And then right now everybody crawl up a hill and crawl back
- 29:36down and like we're just all getting covered in mud and
- 29:39sticks everywhere. Then we did a breath hold test
- 29:41where you had to put your face in the water just like face
- 29:44down, try to hold your breath for a minute.
- 29:47I had not done any training with cold water or breath work, so I
- 29:51did not pass that. I was like.
- 29:56But now you have but I. Learned that and there's.
- 29:58A lot of fear in putting your face in water, maybe not for
- 30:01you, but for a lot of people. Like, that's the first thing we
- 30:03do in kayak training is like, before you even learn how to
- 30:08roll, you just have to put your face in the water and hold your
- 30:12face there and like just get comfortable with your face being
- 30:17submerged. And people freak out.
- 30:20People are so nervous to do that, to just wow.
- 30:24I didn't know that was a thing. I don't actually have a lot of
- 30:28fear and anxiety that comes up for me when I do movements, but
- 30:31I definitely will immediately gas out or if I'm not adapted to
- 30:36something, it's just immediate fail.
- 30:39So I could only hold my breath for 30 seconds and I was like,
- 30:42I'm done. I'm looking around and I'm like,
- 30:45there's a few people whose heads are still under.
- 30:46That's impressive. And just crawling up like wet
- 30:51boulders. And again, everybody is barefoot
- 30:54and was. There anyone that got hurt?
- 30:56At all. No, nobody got hurt.
- 30:58Because you level to that point, Yeah, knowing like what to do.
- 31:01Cool. Nobody got hurt at my level 2 or
- 31:04Level 3 certification other than what we would call move nut
- 31:08tattoos, which are just like some bruises and.
- 31:11Scrapes. You know, there was a rope
- 31:14horizontal rope climb that we did that some people got like
- 31:19rope burn on their inner thighs. Luckily I was wearing leggings
- 31:23so that that didn't happen to me.
- 31:24And then some people's feet on the barefoot run who had not
- 31:28been like, truly barefoot run training yet, they were like
- 31:34hobbling just because their feet were so sensitive and tired that
- 31:39they couldn't, they couldn't go with the pace that, wow, they
- 31:43should. Crazy.
- 31:44Probably. Yeah.
- 31:45Hopefully have been able to do so.
- 31:46So you think that the whole that whole experience of going to
- 31:51that of course just totally flipped, yes, your switch on
- 31:55like that? Was what I was like cuz what
- 31:56level 1 and level two were fun and and doable and I passed both
- 32:00of them and I was like OK great. But also like then you want to
- 32:04know what's next? What's the next level?
- 32:08Is there something that I can work towards if I can, if I find
- 32:11out that I actually am already without even trying because
- 32:15probably of my background in gymnastics and athletics and
- 32:19hiking and trail running, like level 2, I'm already there.
- 32:23But so what's next? OK, Level 3 is like a whole
- 32:26other beast. Yeah.
- 32:27Humbling. It's humbling.
- 32:30And it's all outdoors and you're there spending, you know, every
- 32:35day, every night with all the participants too.
- 32:38So you really get that. Did you make any good friends?
- 32:41Camaraderie yes, I did those are some of the people that I've
- 32:44kept in touch with like great the most.
- 32:46And even if I haven't kept in touch I like I care about them a
- 32:51lot I remember them all yeah. And it's a really powerful
- 32:55bonding experience for sure. That really sealed the deal.
- 32:59The deal for me where I was like, I am pivoting and going to
- 33:05do this. Like this is what I want to be.
- 33:08I want to I want to be those instructors.
- 33:10It's basically I was like, I want to be the people who are
- 33:12running this event, that's cool and teaching the skills.
- 33:15And is that is there any higher levels?
- 33:17No, that's it. There are two specialty
- 33:20certifications. There's a combative
- 33:23certification, which I highly recommend self-defense and how
- 33:28to not be a target for victim. And then there's a an aquatic
- 33:33certification. I haven't done that 1 yet.
- 33:35And it's less, it's done less frequently.
- 33:40And so I've it's never worked out for me to take it.
- 33:43Do you have to be at a beach location?
- 33:46And it's done in open water. Maybe sometimes they do it in a
- 33:49swimming pool, but they haven't been running them as often so.
- 33:53We've been encouraging her to do it because we live on the river
- 33:58and how valuable to bring that move now Aquatics into our
- 34:02environment here to be able to apply to our rivers and lakes
- 34:07and streams. Yeah, so that kind.
- 34:09Of goes into river safety and stuff that too because I was
- 34:11just thinking I'm like yeah when I was a kid I was like swimming
- 34:16across the river when then there was somebody that like died like
- 34:22a year later from doing that and I'm like gosh, thank God I was
- 34:25like I have my like you're. Strong enough swimmer.
- 34:29Going back to the. Water rescue and how to do it.
- 34:32Going back to those movement principles, one of them is that
- 34:35it's vital these skills are actually like essential and
- 34:39potentially life saving skills. So some people I would argue
- 34:44like natural movements, not optional.
- 34:46It should be necessary, it should be required.
- 34:50People should ideally feel personally obligated to to be
- 34:59proficient and have that baseline capability to be
- 35:05useful. So there's a couple unhelpful,
- 35:08there's a couple of different slogans that movement has strong
- 35:11to be useful and strong to be helpful.
- 35:14Oh, that's cool. Yeah, that's awesome.
- 35:16I'm going to. I'm going to pause the.
- 35:18Hang on. Yeah, I'm going to pause the our
- 35:21iPhones just so we don't lose all the power because that sucks
- 35:24the battery. OK, OK, so.
- 35:27Clearly, we went full. Barefoot rabbit hole.
- 35:30On this one, so we're slicing it into two parts.
- 35:33Consider this your mid hike snack break.
- 35:35Part 2 will be dropping next week and it's even better.
- 35:38We're talking cold plunges, weird Wellness stuff, and
