Latest / The Scene Projects / MAKO Girls on Inspiration, Collaboration, and Shaping Their Narrative
Transcript
- 0:17Welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:19I'm your host, Bubba Starts, and it is my great pleasure to welcome in the Mako girls.
- 0:25Welcome to the show.
- 0:29So excited.
- 0:30Well, I know we have Mimi, Anai, and Kina here with us today.
- 0:35This is a little bit more difficult, but I'm sure you guys are used to this, you know,
- 0:41speaking in tandem like this.
- 0:42But off the top of the show, I always like to get a little bit of the backstory on the
- 0:47groups.
- 0:47And I don't know if you want to go kind of individually and give a little bit of your
- 0:51individual backgrounds and then coming together or how you wanna do it, but I'm gonna let you
- 0:55figure it out.
- 0:56Alright.
- 0:57That's perfectly fine.
- 0:58We're actually sisters, so our start is all pretty much the same.
- 1:01Right.
- 1:02Yeah.
- 1:02We were inspired by the boy group model's behavior in 2012, honestly, to just actually
- 1:08because we was entertaining for fun.
- 1:10But seeing their process and their documentary inspired us to create it I mean, to do music as
- 1:14a career.
- 1:15Mhmm.
- 1:15So literally after seeing them, after watching their process, we started looking for our
- 1:19vocal coach.
- 1:20And now I found our vocal coach.
- 1:21She found at 10 years old, we really started, taking more dance classes, like, just trying to
- 1:26actually put the package together, what Makeover Girls is gonna look like.
- 1:30And literally after, I would say, 2014 having our first single, we was getting the ball
- 1:35rolling, doing different shows, talent shows, just getting our name out there.
- 1:40Incredible.
- 1:41Yeah.
- 1:41So you've been at this for a little while now, but you've always had this vision for what it
- 1:47should be.
- 1:48Right?
- 1:48It it was never, you know, in question what you wanted to do.
- 1:53It was just a matter of how you're going to get there.
- 1:55Obviously, you know, having, you know, 2020 hit in the middle of your career, right, as I'm
- 2:01sure you're starting to build momentum and that kind of crushing everything as it did for so
- 2:05many people in the music business.
- 2:08But now you're back.
- 2:09You're you're nominated for the Southern Entertainment Awards, best girl group.
- 2:13Was that the nomination?
- 2:14Yes.
- 2:15It was.
- 2:16Yeah.
- 2:17Incredible.
- 2:18Talk about what it means for you.
- 2:20I mean, you've been doing this for over a decade.
- 2:22Talk about what it means to be nominated for an award like this.
- 2:27Oh, I feel like it's like a recognition of our hard work since we've been doing it for, like,
- 2:31twelve years.
- 2:32It's like twelve years of work finally put into the forefront.
- 2:35I think it's actually giving like, typically, when you are, like, doing like, in the music
- 2:39industry in general, you never really acknowledge, like, at least how you are, who
- 2:44you are, the the type of influence that you do have in the industry.
- 2:47And so to be able to just be nominated, like, hey.
- 2:50These are, like, one of the best girl groups out here.
- 2:52I'm just like, oh, they see what we're doing.
- 2:54So we're on the right path, but we just gotta keep moving and keep grinding.
- 2:57And so it really feels nice.
- 2:59Even if win or don't win, the fact that we're being acknowledged as one of the best is always
- 3:02an honor.
- 3:04Yeah.
- 3:04I I think that's so important that, like you said, even if you don't win the acknowledgment
- 3:10and and the separation of you from the rest of the people that are out there and working,
- 3:16especially in such a, an amazing music community like Atlanta is, it could be hard to
- 3:21separate yourself from the local scene.
- 3:24Right?
- 3:24Like, I live in South Dakota.
- 3:26Right?
- 3:26There's just not a lot of people, period.
- 3:28So we we kinda stand out wherever we go.
- 3:31But having been on this tour, you know, going through a place, you know, a city like Dallas
- 3:36or Austin or, you know, Atlanta that it can be super difficult to even separate yourself from
- 3:44the rest of those, and part timers don't make that happen.
- 3:48I mean, we we see the professionalism, from just looking at your home studio there.
- 3:53That is not an AI backdrop there.
- 3:55No.
- 3:56This this
- 3:56is the workspace, the lab, the battle station, whatever you ladies call it.
- 4:02But that's where you you're creating this.
- 4:05So are you self producing your music as well?
- 4:08No.
- 4:08I wish we was having all the skills.
- 4:10You know?
- 4:11We had everything in our bag.
- 4:12We'll be set to go.
- 4:13But, no, we work with a lot of different, producers.
- 4:16Our engineer comes here, spends a lot of nights with us in this studio.
- 4:20We could send demos.
- 4:21We write with other writers coming in the studio.
- 4:23So it's a whole collaborative experience when we're making music, and, like, this is just the
- 4:28hub for where it all happens.
- 4:29Right.
- 4:30Yeah.
- 4:31What a major leg up, though, to have the space that people could come into.
- 4:35I mean, that's at least one less thing to have to worry about.
- 4:39Yeah.
- 4:40One less ticket to pay for, honestly.
- 4:42Yeah.
- 4:43Yeah.
- 4:43And I would say that it you know, cheaper to build your own and to have it permanently,
- 4:48although the upfront cost is there.
- 4:51You can now create for decades to come inside of your space and then only having to hire the
- 4:57talent behind the board, and and also having those relationships with people.
- 5:01Like you said, your engineer spends a lot of time sitting in that chair staring at those
- 5:06screens in that board.
- 5:07Yes.
- 5:08Oh, yeah.
- 5:08All the time.
- 5:09And, honestly, when we are having our show, our creative director, her and her team will come
- 5:14in.
- 5:14We'll just talk about how we wanna do our show set, and they'll come in here.
- 5:18We'll just vibe out to the music.
- 5:19Our manager and our engineer work together with the sound company, so they bring all they sit
- 5:24in here a lot of the times too just to No.
- 5:26We have some more speakers.
- 5:28Like, you know what
- 5:28we need?
- 5:29Some more speakers.
- 5:30Yeah.
- 5:30Did you see our practice room?
- 5:32Because it's also in our house as well.
- 5:34We used to have speakers lining the walls, like, barely any room to actually practice,
- 5:37practice, but we covered our mirrors.
- 5:40We was prepared for anything, honestly.
- 5:43Well and you have to be in this day and age and with the huge vision that you have for your
- 5:49careers and and where it's going is that you need to have all of the things in place.
- 5:55It it can be so hard to do it all.
- 5:59Does do you find it to be advantageous?
- 6:01I know your sisters and you grew up together, but to have such a tight knit team even beyond
- 6:07the, you know, the three of you, it sounds like you have a pretty awesome team around you.
- 6:12Yeah.
- 6:12I think it's the best thing because everybody knows the vision.
- 6:15They know us personally.
- 6:17Yeah.
- 6:17So that way they know how we work.
- 6:19They know what we struggle in.
- 6:21Honestly, they know
- 6:22us enough.
- 6:23The things out of us
- 6:24that need.
- 6:25So they know us enough to actually get the results we're looking for, and we're all on the
- 6:29same page.
- 6:30Like, I think that's the only way we wanna work is if somebody is on the same page with the
- 6:34vision we see for ourselves because there's times when we sometimes feel down.
- 6:38So having them around to be like, y'all, I got this idea or, hey.
- 6:41This song is perfect.
- 6:42Let's do this.
- 6:43Like, pushing us like, lifting us back up on the days we feel down is, like, the best to
- 6:47have that team.
- 6:48Say, like, our team has the best, like, communication.
- 6:51Yeah.
- 6:52They like, our dynamics, we literally are able to pull from everybody or just draw inspiration
- 6:57from everyone that we work with and then even just, oh, like, come meet me saying you for
- 7:01feeling down.
- 7:02They're like, no.
- 7:02I see this for you.
- 7:03Like, if you don't stay down there, you get up because we believe in your vision.
- 7:07We're push you to make sure you get there.
- 7:09Like, it's so they're so supportive.
- 7:10Like, we absolutely They
- 7:12They get us hype all
- 7:13the time.
- 7:13Even with the writing process because sometimes we'll we're all sisters.
- 7:16So we all kinda link, sync up, and every time when we're writing songs, it's like, we're
- 7:21stuck in that same process.
- 7:22There'll be some people that are like, okay.
- 7:24Let's just try this.
- 7:25Let's let's throw something new in there and that helps get the creative juices flowing as
- 7:29well.
- 7:30Right.
- 7:30And because you've grown up creating together that that sometimes, like you said, you can get
- 7:35that stuck in that rut altogether as well.
- 7:38So you need some outside influence to to bring in and to kinda shake things up and give you a
- 7:44little bit different perspective.
- 7:45Oh, yes.
- 7:46For sure.
- 7:46I feel like we all live the same lives and different thoughts.
- 7:49So somebody different with other life experiences, hey.
- 7:52Bring them on.
- 7:53We wanna hear it all.
- 7:55Right.
- 7:55And and exactly what you just touched on was a big impetus for why I started the scene
- 8:01projects.
- 8:02Obviously, with so many independent creators out there and in the Midwest, we aren't
- 8:06congregated in one small scene.
- 8:09Right?
- 8:09We're we're not in a small geographical area where we can, oh, I'm just gonna cruise over to
- 8:14their place or I'm gonna go to this show or that show.
- 8:17It was really spread out across a a wide, geographical area.
- 8:21It So became really important to me to build that community online, whether it's, you know,
- 8:26through the podcast or Facebook groups or whatever we're doing to kind of be the team,
- 8:32right, without being official with a a lot of people that we can loosely be associated with
- 8:37one another and can offer that encouragement or advice where it's not always readily available.
- 8:43Yeah.
- 8:44Yeah.
- 8:44That's true.
- 8:45That's a good good concept.
- 8:46I like it.
- 8:47So flip side of the coin, how do you handle conflict, with one another?
- 8:53Because I'm sure there is some.
- 8:55Is it, drawing straws, or is it kind of, yeah.
- 8:59How how do you handle that being so tight knit?
- 9:02I'm sure there's times where everyone's not in exact alignment as well.
- 9:06Oh, yeah.
- 9:07We get into the fist fight, I'm doing that.
- 9:08It'll be over things like, okay.
- 9:13Who has okay.
- 9:14First off, what we learned growing up from our mom, she preached this heavily to us is that,
- 9:19like, your sisters are all that you have in this life, and so, like, you have to treat one
- 9:23one another with one respect.
- 9:25And then the main thing is to have great communication across the board.
- 9:28So, like, when we speak to each other we're never speaking to each other out of, like, mal
- 9:33intent.
- 9:33Like, we're really just over here, like, hey.
- 9:35I'm letting you know this because I care about you.
- 9:37This is how I feel about certain situations.
- 9:38Like, we
- 9:39know when or we're like, hey.
- 9:40I'm telling you this because it's wrong.
- 9:42I'm not telling you this just to be saying it.
- 9:44Like, we're pretty upfront with each other, but we just learn how to communicate and how each
- 9:49person likes to be communicated to to actually, like, be more effective and things like that.
- 9:54So we're we're sisters at the end of day, so very upfront with each other all the time.
- 9:59But I think overall, we have really good communication.
- 10:02So if we are into it about anything,
- 10:04not just who took the charger.
- 10:06That's why I serve.
- 10:07Or if there's an
- 10:08adding care item, An attitude that day, I'll just talk to you in a couple hours.
- 10:12Like, I I don't wanna deal with you
- 10:13right now.
- 10:14Me just take it real quick.
- 10:15Let me process.
- 10:15I'll I'll get back to you, like, one to two business days.
- 10:18No.
- 10:18But yeah.
- 10:19So how do you handle the duties of singing?
- 10:23That's kind of interesting to me.
- 10:25Is there one of you that is kind of the lead or is everyone kinda taking their parts and
- 10:30singing backgrounds at different times and harmonies?
- 10:33Like, what is the sound?
- 10:35How is that affected by being a trio?
- 10:38Oh, yeah.
- 10:38So cool thing
- 10:39about leaders.
- 10:40Right.
- 10:40The cool
- 10:40thing about our group is that we each literally do it.
- 10:43And it's also dependent upon the song in all honesty.
- 10:46Like, there is no key.
- 10:48Like, maybe you're gonna be, like, the lead, and then Kina and I are gonna handle, like,
- 10:51backing and stuff like that.
- 10:52It's like, okay.
- 10:52Whose voice fits this song the best?
- 10:54Alright.
- 10:54So I can roll low register.
- 10:56Are we we're gonna throw either Mimi or Kina on the song?
- 10:59Or if it's,
- 11:00like, in a higher register, then Anais, this is all you.
- 11:03Like, a lot of times we play to each other's strengths, or a lot of times if we hear a song,
- 11:07we're like, hey.
- 11:07I really love this part.
- 11:09Can I call this go ahead and take this one?
- 11:11We will do that in a heartbeat if we're
- 11:13That's when the fist to cuffs come out.
- 11:16Oh, yeah.
- 11:16Yeah.
- 11:17Start knocking teeth.
- 11:17No.
- 11:18Yeah.
- 11:18We actually just did that first song that we're currently working on.
- 11:21There was, like, one part of the, like, rap, and I was like, I actually wanna do this.
- 11:24Like, guys, please let me get the chance.
- 11:26Give me the opportunity.
- 11:27I swear I'll do good.
- 11:29Yeah.
- 11:29We're we're big on, like, hey.
- 11:31If you want a part, say it.
- 11:32And then if not, if everybody's just free for all, then we'll just split it up for, like,
- 11:36nice day for whoever's voice fits it best.
- 11:39Well, and the advantage of having the home studio is that you could all three record the
- 11:44same part if you wanted to and kinda pick and choose from that as well instead of kinda being
- 11:48under the gun in a studio that's costing several $100 an hour that you don't always have
- 11:54that capability even if you might have to sneak in, like, after dark sometime to record it so
- 11:58you're not
- 12:02The only person who probably could get away would be me because I'm learning how to record
- 12:06myself.
- 12:07So our engineers send me a template I can learn, and he's teaching me.
- 12:11So I'll be in here a lot of the times just like, hey.
- 12:13I wanna record these backgrounds and see what they sound like when nobody else listening.
- 12:18I'm trying to pull them in because it's so fun when you can actually working on me.
- 12:21It's working on Kino.
- 12:22But you slowly just come in here and you don't have no pressure because there's no we're not
- 12:26really recording a song for real.
- 12:28Like, we're just throwing out ideas, so you have the freedom to just do whatever.
- 12:31But I personally would be that one in here sneak it to 5AM in the morning.
- 12:35If the party is gonna be right.
- 12:36I'm going downstairs to get some snacks, and I just see Mimi downstairs in the studio.
- 12:40Just like, girl, go to bed.
- 12:42My blanket didn't all.
- 12:43I get comfortable.
- 12:44I have my whole setup.
- 12:45Yeah.
- 12:46Well, and it can be addicting, especially learning a new process in that as a creative
- 12:51person.
- 12:52And I admire you for for taking that chance.
- 12:54Even though you have the team around you and people to do that, you still want to learn
- 12:58knowing that, you know, maybe if it's not helping this band, maybe you can help others in
- 13:05the future.
- 13:06You have this beautiful space.
- 13:08I mean, you could be recording that next generation of of sisters that are coming along
- 13:12that want to be big stars as well.
- 13:15And maybe your mind's not there, and I'm just kinda planting that seed with you now.
- 13:19Be big.
- 13:20I like that.
- 13:21Yeah.
- 13:21Well, I'm I I just I'm a little bit older than you gals.
- 13:24Alright?
- 13:24I'll be 40 in May, and I'm starting to look at my career and what I do a lot differently that
- 13:30everything that I do now is about empowering this next generation.
- 13:34While I still have my own musical career and I go out and play some shows occasionally and I
- 13:38still write and do that, my dreams of chasing, like, a large scale touring lifestyle, that's
- 13:46just about me, I'm just kinda beyond that.
- 13:49Right?
- 13:49Like, I tried that.
- 13:50In 2024, I went out with my band and I had some five, six night runs that were going, and I
- 13:55literally got there and was like, I don't want this bad enough.
- 13:57Right?
- 13:57Playing in bars for 20, and I was just like, yeah.
- 14:01I'm not into this anymore.
- 14:03I I I'm way beyond my, you know, partying phase, and I unlike Mimi, I'm not up at 2AM,
- 14:10ever.
- 14:10So, regardless of what there is to do, that is that is definitely when I'm sleeping.
- 14:16So, like, going out and performing just wasn't for me anymore.
- 14:20And I was very blessed to find not just podcasting, but a little bit of mentorship and
- 14:25using the twenty five years of knowledge I have about the music business, albeit never at,
- 14:31like, the top level.
- 14:33I know what it's like to be in the grind and to be in that and can offer something to people
- 14:39who are just starting out.
- 14:41Oh, yeah.
- 14:41And I think we've had a, a the great opportunity to do that as well.
- 14:45We have our annual carnival glow party that we were doing every year, and we would put other
- 14:49youth artists on to open up for us.
- 14:52Because when we were performing, it wasn't a lot of places for young artists to perform.
- 14:56Clubs or, like, the really kiddie
- 14:58Kiddie events.
- 14:59So we was kinda like that middle ground and people who were just above I think it was,
- 15:03like, teenage years.
- 15:04As long as they were in their teens, they was able to perform, and we would give them an
- 15:08opportunity to showcase their talent.
- 15:10And anytime we have an event, if we know any artists, we always are like, hey.
- 15:14Let's put you on because we know what it's
- 15:16like to like your stuff.
- 15:17We know that we can see you going places.
- 15:19Yeah.
- 15:19Yeah.
- 15:20Nothing replaces that stage experience.
- 15:22Yes.
- 15:24Not a not a thing.
- 15:26Incredible.
- 15:27We've talked a lot about the advantages of of working together, being family, and being close
- 15:32knit.
- 15:33Are there any, I I and maybe it might be a question for someone else from the outside, but
- 15:38do you feel like there's any disadvantages to being as close as you are?
- 15:43Honestly, there there is.
- 15:44You would think it's not, but there really is.
- 15:47Just because everything is done in house, it's kinda hard to separate, like, work and just
- 15:53your time as family and sisters.
- 15:56And we struggle with that for years of just like, okay.
- 15:58When to cut off the conversation about Mako Girl?
- 16:01Let's not immediately start our morning about work.
- 16:05Like, that was really the challenge for us is just balancing, when we wanted to, like, put
- 16:11our Mako hats on and then taking them off or even just finding the time to we're getting
- 16:15older now.
- 16:16So a lot of the stuff that we're doing even with us being a family is, like, I'm still
- 16:20growing up as well as trying to be a unit with my sister.
- 16:24So you're trying to balance the growth rate of yourself and what you wanna do with your life
- 16:28on top of how you're going to make it work within the group.
- 16:31So I feel
- 16:31like have, like, similar lives.
- 16:33We also have, like, different social groups and stuff as well.
- 16:36Like, we also have, like, a little close knit friend group.
- 16:39Mhmm.
- 16:39But outside of that, we have, like, friends from like, for me, I have friends out of state.
- 16:43I go to cons and stuff like that.
- 16:45Or Mimi will have, like, other friends other places, so she'll hang out with her boyfriend.
- 16:49Anai, that's Muay Thai.
- 16:51So she'll go out and hang out with her Muay Thai friends and, like, go out and do other
- 16:55things.
- 16:55So it's kinda like scheduling how we can hang out with our friends, our family, and Dumiko
- 17:00girls as well.
- 17:01Nobody's fighting Anai for a part.
- 17:03No.
- 17:05No.
- 17:05She likes to practice all her moves on us, and we're like, that's enough.
- 17:09Okay?
- 17:09You whatever you want, you got it.
- 17:11Because All you hear
- 17:12is like, hey.
- 17:12Come here real quick.
- 17:13I wanna learn.
- 17:13So I don't I
- 17:14wanna try this move
- 17:15out real quick.
- 17:15I'm like so you earn respect in the group.
- 17:20Now I and not that I'm trying to, like, break up the band or anything, but have any of you
- 17:25ever gone out and done anything solo projects even if it's just, like, collaborating with
- 17:31with someone else as, like, a feature on something, or is it always Mako girls as a
- 17:36unit?
- 17:37And I left us for Netflix.
- 17:38Oh my god.
- 17:39That's our cosplay thing.
- 17:41No.
- 17:42Not really, actually.
- 17:43Like, no.
- 17:44Official ones.
- 17:45But even if we do, like, solo projects or just stuff with working with other artists, it
- 17:50really just expands who Mako girls are.
- 17:52So we're not just limited to, like, all the trio sisters.
- 17:55Like, you're able to pull stuff from Mimi because she has different interests from me.
- 17:59I have different interests from Kina, and so we're able to just kinda add more to our brand
- 18:04when we do go out to do solo work because, hey.
- 18:06This is Anai, but then Anai is also part of Mako Girls, so you're tapping into both realms
- 18:10in a way.
- 18:10Yeah.
- 18:11So we haven't done it musically, but I know, like, Anai and Kina have a really strong fan
- 18:16base and community in, like, anime and gaming and cosplay.
- 18:19So a lot of those people who love them for what they do online literally come and see us
- 18:25perform, or they're always like, oh my god.
- 18:27I can't believe it's y'all, and we go to different events as well.
- 18:30So that type of branching off we would do.
- 18:32And then, like you said, all the interest kinda helps add to Mako girls and who we can actually
- 18:37reach when we're creating.
- 18:38Right.
- 18:39But it's always, all roads lead back to Mako girls.
- 18:43Yeah.
- 18:43Pretty much.
- 18:46Exciting stuff.
- 18:47So talk about the music a little bit and what you got coming up.
- 18:51Obviously, the nomination is is huge, but what have you got?
- 18:55Any any new music that's coming out soon or that recently came out?
- 19:00Oh, yeah.
- 19:00We definitely had our we had our first official CD signing at DBS Sounds for our single chasing
- 19:06a dream.
- 19:07Basically, the song is literally talking about our passion and how much we sacrificed and the
- 19:11work we put in and how dedicated we are to our dream.
- 19:14We put so many years in.
- 19:16We're still going hard for the vision that we see
- 19:18for ourselves.
- 19:19We also have a docuseries coming out for the, release as well.
- 19:23It's gonna be released on YouTube.
- 19:25It's a three part episode, so stay tuned for that as well.
- 19:28Able to see the process of how literally we grew up from, like, when we were 10, 12, and
- 19:3214.
- 19:3310 to old.
- 19:34Right.
- 19:34Right.
- 19:34All the all the crazy stuff.
- 19:36The improvement of, like, where we are now, where we're looking to go, you'll be seeing all
- 19:41of that in our YouTube docuseries.
- 19:43Our channel is official Mako girls, and we have a lot more music that's gonna be dropping this
- 19:47year.
- 19:48We're really gonna be in our people's faces this year to let them know that this is gonna
- 19:52be a Mako takeover.
- 19:53So, y'all, wherever y'all see us at, like, go ahead hop on.
- 19:57Join our Mako Maniacs because we're be going crazy with you guys.
- 20:00Yes.
- 20:00And we're dropping so much merch.
- 20:01We're so excited because we have visions for what we wanna see.
- 20:05Our Mako Maniacs wear, like, our style, we wanna make sure we can make that for you guys.
- 20:09So we're gonna be doing merch.
- 20:10We have we're dropping singles, like, every month, so we're really getting excited and
- 20:14ready.
- 20:14Summertime is honestly when we outside, so we got to be outside with our merch, with our
- 20:19performance.
- 20:20Just really, like, a nice and take it over.
- 20:24Yeah.
- 20:24And you have all this momentum, and the the nomination seems like it's a small part now of
- 20:30the year that you were going to have anyway.
- 20:33Right?
- 20:33So much of this was happening regardless, but you're able to tap into, you know, a nomination
- 20:38and hopefully a big win at the SEA and kinda put that feather in your cap as you go along.
- 20:44There's really nothing that can stop you girls.
- 20:47A friend once told me if, most people, if they put their mind to something, are going to
- 20:52accomplish that.
- 20:53It's a matter of time.
- 20:54Right?
- 20:55Well, when you add a second person to that, you probably cut your time in half.
- 20:59When you add a third person into that, it it substantially, exponentially decreases the
- 21:05amount of time that it takes because you're increasing the amount of energy that you have
- 21:09to give to it.
- 21:10And I've seen that in our own, I've been able to accomplish so much more in 2025, in the back
- 21:17half of '25, into '26 because of the team that are now coming out to support that.
- 21:22And I think it's really cool that you're you're you're multimedia.
- 21:27Right?
- 21:27You're gaming, your videos, and the movie, and the docuseries.
- 21:31You're really far ahead of and doing it.
- 21:34I think a lot of artists out there and people that I've spoken to, like, they want to do
- 21:39that, but either they don't know how or aren't learning how to do it, and it's stuck in that.
- 21:45And I feel like, especially with you, that action is a key component of Mako girls, that
- 21:52it's not just talk about doing it.
- 21:54It's get out there and accomplish the goals.
- 21:57Oh, yes.
- 21:58You're absolutely right.
- 21:59Hit the nail on the head, honestly, because with our docuseries, we literally shot the
- 22:04confessionals ourselves.
- 22:05We got some mics from our TikTok shop and literally was like, let's do this because
- 22:10down all the questions.
- 22:11Down all the questions, got the script,
- 22:13got mood board and everything.
- 22:14Everything.
- 22:15Literally, that's how we run a lot of our stuff.
- 22:17So if anything we wanted to accomplish when it comes to releases or projects, if we wanna do
- 22:22it nine times out of 10, we're back behind the scenes making sure every little case is there
- 22:28and learning through the process so people can see it come to life.
- 22:32Yeah.
- 22:32Incredible.
- 22:33I mean, that's why I talked a little bit off camera about the tour that we just came off of,
- 22:38but for the same reason where I was like, look.
- 22:40This is what we wanna do.
- 22:42It's getting tiresome, like, telling people what we want to do.
- 22:45I'm just gonna go out and do it.
- 22:47I'm gonna roll tape the entire time, and then I'll make my own docuseries or whatever off of
- 22:53that to be able to, like, here.
- 22:55You wanna know what we do?
- 22:56Here it is.
- 22:57Right?
- 22:58Go watch this fifteen minute video, and you'll have a much better idea of what the scene
- 23:03projects are and and who Bubba starts is after that.
- 23:08And and for me, it was imperative to just get that done.
- 23:12I get tired of talking.
- 23:13Right?
- 23:14I talk all the damn time.
- 23:15Alright.
- 23:15Great.
- 23:16I wanna be able to just send you a link and be like, yeah.
- 23:18If you wanna work with us, get back to me.
- 23:20I just don't have the time.
- 23:21Oh, I feel that.
- 23:22I feel that.
- 23:23Yeah.
- 23:23For us, it was just people know us, but they don't know our story, or they don't know how
- 23:28many how much we'd actually put in behind the scenes to get to where we are.
- 23:32So we are like
- 23:33Oh, sorry.
- 23:33Oh.
- 23:34We just go ahead.
- 23:35Yeah.
- 23:35But I was saying it
- 23:36seems like they don't wanna get to know the story because there'll be certain people
- 23:39that'll be like, okay.
- 23:40Like, I see it, but we wanna change it up.
- 23:43We wanna make out do this or look like this or sound like this.
- 23:46And it's like, well, that's not what we're going for.
- 23:49Yeah.
- 23:49I feel like for us, we just was prepared to tell our story though and had having control of
- 23:54how we wanted to tell it instead of, like, just waiting for somebody to come find out that they
- 24:00wanna tell our story.
- 24:01Now when they wanna come and, like, make it grand, like, we can do that, but we kinda have
- 24:05the vision of what we're looking for and what we want people to see and know about, like, the
- 24:10process that we go through behind the scenes to do what they see every time we, like, step
- 24:15outside.
- 24:16Yeah.
- 24:17I think that's an incredible lesson for any artist out there that don't look for somebody
- 24:22to do things for you.
- 24:23You wanna control your narrative as much as you can and to control the process as well.
- 24:30And now that you've done it one time to not, you know, go back and recreate, you don't need
- 24:35a new, you know, behind the music.
- 24:37Yeah.
- 24:37But you can take what you've learned now and apply that to future releases in every single,
- 24:43and maybe it doesn't get a three parter, but you're able to put something together now for
- 24:47each because it's it's so important now.
- 24:50You have to be engaging with people besides just the music, you know, people thinking that
- 24:55they're gonna come out and record a song, and and that song's gonna become a hit, they're
- 24:59gonna get signed to a label.
- 25:01And, like, that is it's not even a dream anymore.
- 25:04Right?
- 25:04Like, it doesn't exist.
- 25:06It's not reality.
- 25:07Not at all.
- 25:08Not at all.
- 25:09It's literally trial and error,
- 25:10trial and error.
- 25:1120,000,000 trials, and then something just sparks, yeah, after after all the work that
- 25:17goes in behind it.
- 25:18Sometimes some people do get like, end up getting lucky and just like, oh, hey.
- 25:22This actually blew up.
- 25:23But for a majority, it really is just a dedication of the.
- 25:28Like, you had to just keep doing it over and over and over again, and then eventually, it
- 25:32will take off.
- 25:34Right.
- 25:34Yeah.
- 25:35Great great advice here.
- 25:36I I love to see, young people like yourselves that are just out there doing it, especially
- 25:41young women.
- 25:42I think it's so empowering for other, you know, girls that are growing up now.
- 25:46My daughter's nine.
- 25:47She wants to be as famous as Taylor Swift.
- 25:50I was like, okay, honey.
- 25:51Well, that daddy might have to do a lot of work before I can do that for you.
- 25:57But teaching them the work, I think and the work ethic is almost something that you can't
- 26:02teach.
- 26:03Where does that come from, from you girls?
- 26:05You you mentioned your mom being very on, I would say, like, the emotional intelligence
- 26:10part of teaching you early on to respect one another at the at the very least.
- 26:15But where does your work ethic come from, and what keeps you going?
- 26:18Right.
- 26:18That means they are fucked.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:20Our our Caribbean faults.
- 26:22That is where that work ethic come in.
- 26:25Okay.
- 26:25Caribbean people, we work at two, three jobs, but they, like, stay on it.
- 26:28Like They're on top of everything.
- 26:30Our dad, he always would instill in us.
- 26:33Like, there's just certain things, like, hard work.
- 26:35Like, he always told us, especially me when growing up before we was even in Mako girls
- 26:40Yeah.
- 26:40He would tell me, like, oh, like, don't quit.
- 26:42Like, don't give up on something.
- 26:43Like, always see, like, see it through to the in a way.
- 26:46Like, he never let me quit.
- 26:47Yeah.
- 26:47And then and then we decided to do makeup girls.
- 26:50Like, they truly invest so much into us, like, day in and day out.
- 26:54Like, they're always working on just coming up with new things or strategies to apply for us,
- 26:59promoting our stuff even while they're at work.
- 27:01Like, they've always just shown that kind of hustle mentality in a way because even with him
- 27:05growing up, he had to do that.
- 27:07And so he went to instill in us to be able to have that extra grind or that hustle to be
- 27:12like, okay.
- 27:12I wanna put myself out there.
- 27:14I want to get to this next level or this anywhere in the world or in the industry, and
- 27:19so we have to constantly work for that.
- 27:20Like, it's not just gonna be handed to us.
- 27:22You have to get out there actively and promote yourself.
- 27:25You know?
- 27:25Just show the people who you are and just constantly just push yourself, yeah,
- 27:29all the time.
- 27:30No pudding.
- 27:30Yeah.
- 27:30No.
- 27:31Ironically, like, that's the, like, that's the best part to us is that, like, work.
- 27:35Because, like, even when we're going to, like, rehearsals Yeah.
- 27:38Where that's the most exciting part for us to work on new things, to come up with new ideas,
- 27:43to, like, see the whole process go throughout.
- 27:46And come to life.
- 27:47Yeah.
- 27:47I feel like a lot of people we work with when we're doing any type of choreography, any type
- 27:52of boot camp, they're like, y'all work ethic is unmatched.
- 27:54Like, y'all are not shying away from anything y'all never done before.
- 27:58Y'all are like, let's do it.
- 28:00Y'all gonna keep trying until we do have to switch something up.
- 28:02Like, I think that's our best, like, attribute.
- 28:05Like, when we're going to different places or working with different people, they're just
- 28:08like, y'all just don't stop.
- 28:10And I feel like, again, it's from our parents because they both run they both ran multiple,
- 28:15like, like, their own businesses.
- 28:17So we've seen them just grind and build their own clientele doing different things, and I
- 28:22feel like watching them and even in this day and age, seeing all these different people
- 28:26starting their own companies and doing their own thing, it kinda makes you know, like, you
- 28:30can do it too.
- 28:31Like, just whatever you wanna do, everything gonna take hard work.
- 28:34You might as well do it for something you love doing.
- 28:36So I feel like we put that into my play every time we're hitting the stage or rehearsing or
- 28:43anything like that.
- 28:45Yeah.
- 28:45You earned the Mako name.
- 28:47That's for sure.
- 28:48Yes.
- 28:49Definitely did.
- 28:51I love it.
- 28:52Well, I think that's a great point to kinda cut this off.
- 28:55I would love to invite you girls back for an episode of one of our other shows we call Love
- 29:00Noise, which, we livestream on Wednesday nights.
- 29:04And, we'd love to have you bring in a couple of your songs so we can listen to them live and
