Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: A lot going on in the world
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Prime Minister is jetting off on a diplomatic mission
- 0:02Speaker 1: this week, heading into a decidedly undiplomatic world. Israel and
- 0:06Speaker 1: Irana hammer and Tong's Netanya, who says Tehan is close
- 0:11Speaker 1: to producing a nuclear weapon. As the missiles and the
- 0:14Speaker 1: drones fly across the Middle East, talks of a nuclear
- 0:18Speaker 1: deal in Oman are on hold, the UK's mobilizing fighter
- 0:22Speaker 1: jets in the region as Iran warns it'll strike the
- 0:24Speaker 1: Western targets if they dare to support Tel Aviv. Israel's
- 0:29Speaker 1: blockade of Gaza continues. That's despite protests from this country
- 0:33Speaker 1: and most others through the UN and sanctions talks in
- 0:37Speaker 1: Turkey to when the war in Ukraine haven't stopped the violence.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Diplomacy has so far failed. China continues buying all from
- 0:46Speaker 1: Russia and tacitly, keeping its war in Europe alive. The
- 0:49Speaker 1: US continues supporting Israel, keeping its wars in Gaza and
- 0:54Speaker 1: on Iran alive. China and the US themselves are doing
- 0:58Speaker 1: direct battle of a different on trade. We've got politically
- 1:02Speaker 1: motivated assassinations in America, Marines and National Guard troops on
- 1:05Speaker 1: the streets of Los Angeles. All this as the global
- 1:09Speaker 1: economy splutters along under the weight of it all. And
- 1:12Speaker 1: I haven't even mentioned Pakistan and India. Thank god they
- 1:15Speaker 1: sorted their stuff out a couple of weeks ago. As
- 1:18Speaker 1: luxA prepares to meet with Shujinping and then attend a
- 1:21Speaker 1: NATO leaders meeting in the Netherlands, the big question is
- 1:24Speaker 1: not what to do, but where to start. New Zealand's
- 1:28Speaker 1: influence in all of this is, of course limited. Most
- 1:32Speaker 1: of these conflicts date back further than the birth of
- 1:35Speaker 1: our nation. We rely on the United Nations, whose P
- 1:40Speaker 1: five veto power renders it about as useful as an
- 1:43Speaker 1: ashtray on a motorbike, utterly useless. This is not the
- 1:48Speaker 1: first time the world has faced a collision of crises
- 1:51Speaker 1: involving wars backed by competing global superpowers. While diplomacy has
- 1:58Speaker 1: failed to prevent them, the history tells us it's also
- 2:02Speaker 1: the best and only way to eventually solve them. For
