- 0:00Speaker 1: Good afternoon, Austin, Texas. Andrew Zimmol back in the chair,
- 0:04Speaker 1: hanging out with you on a Friday edition of The
- 0:08Speaker 1: Craigway Show. Want to thank you guys for hanging out
- 0:11Speaker 1: with us on a Friday. Hey, maybe this is the
- 0:15Speaker 1: end of the week. Maybe this is the beginning of
- 0:16Speaker 1: your week. Either way, thanks for taking a little bit
- 0:20Speaker 1: of time out of your day to hang out with us.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Craig Way joins the program at three seventeen, and we
- 0:26Speaker 1: got a lot to talk about. The good, the bad,
- 0:28Speaker 1: the ugly, and the sad. Craig joins at three seventeen
- 0:32Speaker 1: to talk about game number two of this series against
- 0:35Speaker 1: the Arkansas Razorbacks the Longhorns last night. We'll start with
- 0:39Speaker 1: the the ugly and sad. The number one ranked Texas
- 0:43Speaker 1: Longhorns had a ten game winning streak and this is
- 0:46Speaker 1: really where I start worrying about my job security. To
- 0:49Speaker 1: be completely honest with you, I'm worried about me Andrew
- 0:51Speaker 1: Zimol's job security. As the fill in for the Craigway Show,
- 0:54Speaker 1: because if you go back in the way back machine
- 0:56Speaker 1: and you'll remember the last ten game plus win streak
- 1:00Speaker 1: the Longhorn baseball team had. It was a seventeen game
- 1:02Speaker 1: win streak, and I came on the radio and I
- 1:04Speaker 1: said to you, I'm feeling really good. We're not gonna
- 1:07Speaker 1: talk about the win streak. We're gonna keep it low key.
- 1:10Speaker 1: And then immediately Longhorns lost. And then yesterday, ten game
- 1:14Speaker 1: win streak on the line, I said, hey, don't want
- 1:18Speaker 1: to make any big proclamations here, don't want to draw
- 1:21Speaker 1: any attention to it. Ten game win streak on the line.
- 1:24Speaker 1: In Fayetteville, Longhorns lose lost by to number eleven Arkansas,
- 1:30Speaker 1: nine to zero on Thursday Nights, the first loss the
- 1:34Speaker 1: Longhorns have had since April twelfth, ending the second double
- 1:38Speaker 1: digit win streak of the season. The previous five losses
- 1:42Speaker 1: on the season combined eleven runs for Texas. Last night's loss,
- 1:47Speaker 1: of course, nine runs. Eight of the nine Razorbacks recorded
- 1:51Speaker 1: hits as one of the top offensive teams in the country,
- 1:55Speaker 1: chased my Guy ro Hosts off the mound in the
- 1:58Speaker 1: fourth inning. He entered tied in the six nationally for wins.
- 2:02Speaker 1: He logged his first defeat since March eighteenth, and Longhorns
- 2:07Speaker 1: looked to even the series tonight. First pitch, seven PM
- 2:10Speaker 1: six forty five air time on one oh three one,
- 2:12Speaker 1: Austin's eighty station. Okay, so let's get that out of
- 2:16Speaker 1: the way. Okay, we'll talk to Craig about Texas baseball
- 2:19Speaker 1: later in the show an hour number two.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about the good.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Okay, Texas softball rallying back today a big win against
- 2:30Speaker 1: Kentucky seven to six, after a win yesterday afternoon, a
- 2:34Speaker 1: nine to one win in five innings, and this is
- 2:38Speaker 1: kind of getting back on the right side of things
- 2:41Speaker 1: for Mike White and for the Texas Longhorn softball team
- 2:44Speaker 1: that has looked really good throughout most of the year
- 2:46Speaker 1: over the last calendar though forty four to nine on
- 2:50Speaker 1: the season, eight or fifteen to eight overall in conference play,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but in the last couple of games, struggled against Oklahoma.
- 2:59Speaker 1: The bats really weren't waking up against the Tigers in
- 3:04Speaker 1: that last series two weeks ago, three weeks ago, and
- 3:09Speaker 1: we were starting to get a little concerned, especially with
- 3:12Speaker 1: the SEC Softball tournament coming up next week. You start
- 3:16Speaker 1: worrying about, Hey, you know, did we peak too early?
- 3:18Speaker 1: What's going on here? A win today against Kentucky now
- 3:22Speaker 1: wins the series. You go into the SEC Tournament next
- 3:25Speaker 1: week in Athens, Georgia. Feeling a little bit more pepped
- 3:28Speaker 1: than the step, a little bit more excited. So that's
- 3:29Speaker 1: the good. Now, let's talk about some of the sad.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It was reported earlier today, just a couple hours ago,
- 3:36Speaker 1: so it's not necessarily right off the press steaming hot news,
- 3:40Speaker 1: but it is still hot news, and we'll get into
- 3:42Speaker 1: more of it as the show continues, because I have
- 3:44Speaker 1: a lot of thoughts on the breaking news out of
- 3:47Speaker 1: San Antonio, my hometown, my home city, the San Antonio
- 3:52Speaker 1: Spurs and Greg Popovich. It's not goodbye. It is a
- 3:59Speaker 1: new though for an organization. After twenty nine years, Greg
- 4:03Speaker 1: Popovich no longer the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs,
- 4:08Speaker 1: Greg Popovich transitioning to a full time role as team's
- 4:12Speaker 1: president of basketball operations. The team announced today now Mitch Johnson,
- 4:17Speaker 1: who was the interim head coach the acting head coach
- 4:20Speaker 1: after Popovich suffered a mild stroke in November. If you
- 4:22Speaker 1: remember we were on the air talking about that together,
- 4:26Speaker 1: he now takes over full time coaching duties. I will
- 4:29Speaker 1: talk to you, I will get you through the play
- 4:31Speaker 1: by play of how this all went down for me.
- 4:34Speaker 1: So I'm in the studio, I'm doing what we do
- 4:36Speaker 1: in the radio world. It's a Friday. It's kind of
- 4:39Speaker 1: a laid back Friday. You look out in the parking lot,
- 4:41Speaker 1: there's like three cars, including mine, and then this news
- 4:45Speaker 1: breaks and then the phone lines are lighting up, and
- 4:48Speaker 1: then the emails are getting shot off. Who is what's
- 4:51Speaker 1: going on? Who's going to be the next head coach?
- 4:52Speaker 1: But does this mean for the Spurs? So what turned
- 4:54Speaker 1: out not to be a laid back, easy going Friday
- 4:58Speaker 1: for those of us in Saty is now all gung ho.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And luckily the Spurs did what the Spurs do. They
- 5:06Speaker 1: already had a contingency plan in place. Okay, Hey, we
- 5:09Speaker 1: knew that, Greg Popovic, if it wasn't the end, it
- 5:11Speaker 1: was nearing to it. We knew that there was gonna
- 5:13Speaker 1: have to be some sort of succession plan. Other organizations,
- 5:17Speaker 1: other franchises don't have that. They don't have the foresight
- 5:21Speaker 1: or the wherewithal to set it up. Hey, we're gonna
- 5:23Speaker 1: go from this point to this point. Hey, we know
- 5:25Speaker 1: how we're going to pass the baton going forward, And
- 5:28Speaker 1: of course the news drops eleven am Central noon Eastern.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Greg Popovich moving into a president of basketball operations role,
- 5:37Speaker 1: and then thirty minutes later, Hey, Mitch Johnson's gonna be
- 5:40Speaker 1: the head coach. We're gonna give you thirty minutes for
- 5:43Speaker 1: all of you media type, for all you fan types
- 5:45Speaker 1: to run around with your head's chopped off like chickens
- 5:48Speaker 1: with your heads chopped off, clucking around trying to figure
- 5:50Speaker 1: out what the next move is going to be. And
- 5:52Speaker 1: then we're gonna tell you, Hey, it's gonna be Mitch Johnson.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Don't worry about it. There is steady hands still on
- 5:57Speaker 1: the wheel. And I said, when this happened in November
- 6:01Speaker 1: the health scare with Popovich, that there's other head coaches
- 6:05Speaker 1: who have done similarly to what pop has done.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:10Speaker 1: You think about pat Riley in Miami. Pat Riley was
- 6:12Speaker 1: on the sidelines in Miami. He had known that he
- 6:15Speaker 1: was a legend of the game. He won rings in
- 6:17Speaker 1: LA he got the Knicks back to where the Knicks
- 6:20Speaker 1: were in the nineties, a legendary franchise back near the pinnacle.
- 6:24Speaker 1: And he goes to Miami and he says, you know what,
- 6:27Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a step back. I'm not doing the
- 6:30Speaker 1: forty one games on the road. I'm going to go
- 6:33Speaker 1: into a president of operations mode. I'm going to help
- 6:35Speaker 1: become the general manager. I'm gonna get this team titles.
- 6:38Speaker 1: From a front office point of view, red Arbach is
- 6:42Speaker 1: another name that I thought of when this health scare
- 6:44Speaker 1: happened with Popovich in November. Red Arbach legendary coach more
- 6:49Speaker 1: rings than he has fingers. Okay, he takes a step back,
- 6:55Speaker 1: he goes into the front office. He's still pulling the strings.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Casey Jones is the head coach of those eight these
- 7:00Speaker 1: Celtics teams. You remember the ad Celtics, l Larry Bird Celtics,
- 7:04Speaker 1: the Kevin McHale, the Robert Parrish Celtics. Red Arbach's pulling
- 7:08Speaker 1: the strings. Casey Jones is the head coach, but Red
- 7:11Speaker 1: Arbach is pulling the strings. And that's kind of how
- 7:13Speaker 1: I look at this Papovich move, is that he's taking
- 7:15Speaker 1: the red Arbach pat Riley game plan blueprint. He's of
- 7:20Speaker 1: course going to have his fingerprints. He's going to do
- 7:22Speaker 1: things differently because he's pop He's gonna do things differently
- 7:24Speaker 1: because it's the Spurs. He's gonna do things the right
- 7:28Speaker 1: way because he's both of those things as well, and
- 7:32Speaker 1: you now have a head coach that he is hand
- 7:34Speaker 1: picked in Mitch Johnson, to run the organization, to run
- 7:38Speaker 1: the day to day operations of the Spurs, to run
- 7:41Speaker 1: what is the Wimbin Yama era going to look like
- 7:45Speaker 1: in the Alamo City. Popovich has decided that Mitch Johnson
- 7:49Speaker 1: the new acting head coach, the new head coach of
- 7:52Speaker 1: the Santoie Spurs. We'll talk about that a little bit
- 7:54Speaker 1: more as the show continues as well. And then fun now,
- 7:58Speaker 1: I said yesterday, we spent a little bit of time
- 8:01Speaker 1: talking about the debate that has been raging on the interwebs,
- 8:05Speaker 1: a debate that has kind of taken a back seats
- 8:07Speaker 1: now that the NBA playoffs are heating up. We had
- 8:09Speaker 1: a great game winner yesterday from Jalen Brunson. Which will
- 8:12Speaker 1: you and I have to talk about.
- 8:14Speaker 2: We have.
- 8:16Speaker 1: The Eastern Conference semifinals and the Western convers seventy the
- 8:20Speaker 1: semifinals almost locked in. Now we still have to figure
- 8:23Speaker 1: out if Houston is going to force a game seven
- 8:26Speaker 1: tonight or if Golden State back in Oakland or I'm sorry,
- 8:29Speaker 1: back in San Francisco. We'll get the job done to
- 8:33Speaker 1: lock up the Western conference. We still have to figure
- 8:35Speaker 1: that all out. But the debate that was raging for
- 8:38Speaker 1: most of this week was one hundred v one man
- 8:42Speaker 1: versus gorilla. And we talked about a little bit yesterday.
- 8:44Speaker 1: But I told you that if we had the way
- 8:46Speaker 1: back machine, if we had the time machine, and we
- 8:48Speaker 1: could go and we could grab one individual, historically speaking,
- 8:52Speaker 1: one guy that I can bring into this fight for mankind,
- 8:56Speaker 1: one hundred men versus one gorilla, who would I pick?
- 8:58Speaker 1: And I picked William Wallace and I offered.
- 9:00Speaker 2: It up to you.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I said, you got twenty four hours, text me, DM
- 9:04Speaker 1: me use the free iHeartRadio apps talkback feature to give
- 9:08Speaker 1: me some suggestions. And we got one from our friend Richard,
- 9:11Speaker 1: and I'm going to play it for you here. Richard,
- 9:14Speaker 1: I picked William Wallace from Scotland to lead us into
- 9:17Speaker 1: this fight. I said, we needed somebody who is going
- 9:20Speaker 1: to get everybody hyped up, everybody on the same page.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It doesn't matter if we have a super great game plan.
- 9:27Speaker 1: I just need somebody that's going to inspire the troops,
- 9:29Speaker 1: inspire the men before we go into this. Richard has
- 9:33Speaker 1: a pretty good answer. I almost think Richard's answer is
- 9:35Speaker 1: better than mine.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Let's hear it.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Hey, Andrew, this is Richard. I choose Spartacus. I think
- 9:42Speaker 4: Spartacus could rally everybody. He rallied the slaves and almost
- 9:47Speaker 4: defeated the Roman Empire.
- 9:48Speaker 2: So that's my choice. Spartacus.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I love this, answered Richard. This answer is almost as
- 9:53Speaker 1: good as my answer. Maybe I might give you the
- 9:56Speaker 1: slight edge because Spartacus had this same type of vibe
- 10:01Speaker 1: that William Wallace did. Hey, we're all ganging together. We
- 10:05Speaker 1: got to get into that. We can't have somebody going halfway.
- 10:07Speaker 1: We can't go fifty percent against man versus grill. We
- 10:10Speaker 1: have to have one hundred dudes all the way bought in.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Spartacus would be the type of guy who could get
- 10:15Speaker 1: us all the way bought in. So I like that answer, Richard.
- 10:18Speaker 1: If you have an answer, use the free iHeart radio
- 10:22Speaker 1: apps talk back feature. You open up the iHeart Radio app,
- 10:25Speaker 1: You go to AM thirteen hundred zone. You click on it.
- 10:28Speaker 1: There's a little red microphone. You click on the little
- 10:31Speaker 1: red microphone. You got thirty seconds. Who would you pick
- 10:34Speaker 1: if you could go in history? You get one, So
- 10:36Speaker 1: it's you, ninety eight other guys, and this one historical
- 10:40Speaker 1: figure against the Gorilla. Let's hear it as the show continues.
- 10:44Speaker 1: We'll play some of them for you on The Craigway
- 10:46Speaker 1: Show when we come back. We'll talk a little bit
- 10:48Speaker 1: more about this Popovich move to the front office, where
- 10:52Speaker 1: the Spurs go from here. Are there more moves that
- 10:55Speaker 1: are happening in the background. We'll get into all that
- 10:57Speaker 1: next on The Craigway Show. On sports Radio are two
- 11:00Speaker 1: hundred The Zone Sports Radio AM.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Andrew Zimmill hanging out with you on a feel good
- 11:07Speaker 1: Friday edition of The Craig Wave Show. Our guy Marcus
- 11:11Speaker 1: Spears is hanging out with us as well in Austin,
- 11:16Speaker 1: making us sound as pretty as we can. We try
- 11:20Speaker 1: our best over here on AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Marcus,
- 11:24Speaker 1: here's the deal today. It's a day of not morning,
- 11:28Speaker 1: but change in the Alamos City.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Man.
- 11:30Speaker 1: This is a day that Greg Popovich is moving from
- 11:34Speaker 1: the sidelines now into the front office. And Sean Serrani,
- 11:39Speaker 1: the newsbreaker for ESPN, he's the guy that had this first.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Let's hear what he had to say.
- 11:48Speaker 2: His first facility in the last few days.
- 11:49Speaker 5: So as steven A just said, and as I reported
- 11:51Speaker 5: he will still be involved, very hands on, a vital
- 11:55Speaker 5: member of their day to day operations.
- 11:58Speaker 2: And from my understanding, as.
- 12:00Speaker 5: As much as Greg Popovich wanted to continue to coach,
- 12:02Speaker 5: he wanted to be back on the sidelines really badly.
- 12:05Speaker 5: He said it in multiple statements this year. The conclusion
- 12:08Speaker 5: that he came to is that it essentially was just
- 12:11Speaker 5: going to be too taxing for him. The NBA grind
- 12:15Speaker 5: as a head coach. It's a difficult one. And he's
- 12:18Speaker 5: someone that is recovering from the stroke in November and
- 12:21Speaker 5: he's making strides. He's on a human level that's very important.
- 12:25Speaker 5: On a human level, he is doing much better. He's
- 12:27Speaker 5: in a good place, and he is showing up to
- 12:30Speaker 5: the facility. He is a part of what's going on
- 12:32Speaker 5: with the Spurs every single day. He'll continue to be
- 12:34Speaker 5: along with their CEO Rcbufer. Those are the two architects
- 12:38Speaker 5: of everything that goes on in San.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Yeah, everything that's going on in San Antonio runs through
- 12:45Speaker 1: Greg Popinch. You gotta go all the way back to
- 12:48Speaker 1: nineteen ninety six, the last time the Spurs were not
- 12:53Speaker 1: coached by Greg Popovich. That's how long that he's been
- 12:57Speaker 1: doing this. There's entire lifetimes in the NBA. Guys came
- 13:01Speaker 1: in the league and retired in the time that Greg
- 13:04Speaker 1: Popovich was on the sideline for the San Antonio Spurs.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Now this means that Eric Spolshra in Miami is now
- 13:10Speaker 1: the longest tenured head coach in the NBA, which is
- 13:15Speaker 1: hard to believe because I remember when Spoe got hired
- 13:18Speaker 1: in Miami and now, and I remember the Heatls and
- 13:21Speaker 1: I remember in the twenty twenty Finals. It's weird to
- 13:23Speaker 1: think that now he's the longest tenured head coach. Here's
- 13:26Speaker 1: another hashtag stat for you as well. Three hundred and
- 13:30Speaker 1: three coaching changes in the NBA in the Greg Popovich
- 13:35Speaker 1: era in the time that pop was the head coach
- 13:38Speaker 1: of the Spurs twenty nine seasons in that time, three
- 13:42Speaker 1: hundred and three changes across the NBA when it comes
- 13:47Speaker 1: to new head coaches, which is absolutely wild to think about. Now,
- 13:53Speaker 1: he is the all time career wins, the leader with
- 13:55Speaker 1: one thousand, four hundred and twenty two regular season victories,
- 14:00Speaker 1: five NBA titles, three Coaches of the Year, and he
- 14:04Speaker 1: is if he's not the goat, he is on the
- 14:08Speaker 1: Mount Rushmore. When it comes to NBA head coaches. He
- 14:11Speaker 1: also won a gold medal. If he's not the Goat,
- 14:14Speaker 1: he's on the Mount Rushmore. I could make a case
- 14:16Speaker 1: that he's the greatest NBA coach of all time. I
- 14:19Speaker 1: can make the case that he might be the greatest
- 14:21Speaker 1: North American head coach.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Of all time.
- 14:24Speaker 1: This guy in San Antonio absolutely changed the way that
- 14:29Speaker 1: the NBA looked at the Spurs. He changed the way
- 14:33Speaker 1: that fans looked at consistency and success. Hey, you want
- 14:37Speaker 1: to have a decade of success, that's cute. You want
- 14:39Speaker 1: to have fifteen years of success, that's fine. You want
- 14:42Speaker 1: to have almost three decades, three decades of continued success.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Then you're looking at the San Antonio Spurs and you're
- 14:50Speaker 1: looking at Greg Povich and the only drawback I have,
- 14:54Speaker 1: the only thing that makes me shed a single tier.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Not only I'm not crying because it's it's over. I'm
- 15:00Speaker 1: I'm I'm happy because it happened, right, That's the saying,
- 15:03Speaker 1: don't cry, becaus over, smile because it happened. The only
- 15:06Speaker 1: tier I shed is because I was hoping to see
- 15:10Speaker 1: women Yama and pop at least a couple more games.
- 15:14Speaker 1: I wanted at least another season of Popovich coaching, Molding
- 15:20Speaker 1: teaching Victor women Yama and I wanted one more season
- 15:23Speaker 1: of wimby learning at the feet of one of the
- 15:26Speaker 1: most analytical, driven, forward thinking coaches in the NBA in
- 15:34Speaker 1: professional sports. Greg Popovich was the reason and is the
- 15:38Speaker 1: reason that the Golden State Warriors won the titles that
- 15:40Speaker 1: they were able to win over the last decade because
- 15:44Speaker 1: Steve Kerr learned at the feet of Greg Papovic. Steve
- 15:47Speaker 1: Kerr says, hey, I have two incredible let's hear it, Marcus,
- 15:51Speaker 1: what you got.
- 15:52Speaker 6: You don't think that Greg will still giving and Sam
- 15:56Speaker 6: put here and that is just on an advisory row.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I think, okay, so this is where I'm going with that.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I said earlier. I think that he's going to be
- 16:04Speaker 1: like a Red Rbach type. Okay, like, yeah, he'll be
- 16:07Speaker 1: in advisory role. But I think for the Spurs in particular,
- 16:12Speaker 1: you can't have him lingering too much. We want a
- 16:16Speaker 1: little bit of separation of church and State. I want
- 16:18Speaker 1: a little bit of separation between Popovich and miss Johnson
- 16:22Speaker 1: because Mitch has to run and walk and learn on
- 16:25Speaker 1: his own too. Here, like if it is truly his
- 16:29Speaker 1: show now and Mitch Johnson is truly the head coach
- 16:33Speaker 1: of the Spurs. You can't have big brother hanging over you.
- 16:37Speaker 1: You can't have the shadow of the legend hanging over you.
- 16:41Speaker 6: I say it more like a Pet Raleigh sposal. When
- 16:45Speaker 6: Sposial started becoming a head coach death form, and then
- 16:49Speaker 6: as Tom wears on, it becomes more and more by
- 16:52Speaker 6: the Mitchell That's what I can see.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Happy, that's a fair point. That's a fair point, and
- 16:57Speaker 2: I like that too.
- 16:58Speaker 1: But you gotta remember that pat Riley so Spoe early
- 17:00Speaker 1: into the time, early into his tenure as the head coach. Hey,
- 17:03Speaker 1: don't look over your shoulder. Hey, I am the parent
- 17:06Speaker 1: with the hand on the back, but you're riding the
- 17:09Speaker 1: bicycle kid like it is your show. And I can't
- 17:12Speaker 1: have the Greg Papovitch shadow. You don't want to ever
- 17:16Speaker 1: follow the goat in any sport, in any facet, Right, Hey,
- 17:21Speaker 1: we had an incredible CEO over here, and now I'm
- 17:23Speaker 1: the guy that has to follow that act.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:26Speaker 1: There's a reason that Bruce Springsteen's the headliner. There's a
- 17:29Speaker 1: reason that you don't have anybody that comes up after
- 17:32Speaker 1: the boss. Okay, you don't want to be the guy
- 17:35Speaker 1: who has to fill those shoes now, Mitch Johnson, he
- 17:37Speaker 1: has that unenviable position now to be the next guy.
- 17:42Speaker 1: And this is where things get really interesting to me,
- 17:44Speaker 1: because right we had that thirty minute window. We had
- 17:48Speaker 1: that thirty minute window where we didn't know what the
- 17:50Speaker 1: Spurs were really gonna do. Hey are they gonna go out?
- 17:52Speaker 2: Look?
- 17:53Speaker 1: Because we have a coaching tree, and I saw earlier
- 17:56Speaker 1: today on Twitter the coaching tree for Greg Papovic is
- 17:59Speaker 1: like twenty something on head coaches. It's astronomical the amount
- 18:03Speaker 1: of gms and head coaches who have come through San Antonio.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Sam pressI being probably the most famous for an office
- 18:10Speaker 1: guy now with the Oklahoma City Thunder. But Mike Malone,
- 18:13Speaker 1: right wins a championship in Denver. Well, he comes from
- 18:17Speaker 1: the Greg Popovich school of thought. So Mike Budenholzer another
- 18:20Speaker 1: NBA championship head coach who's gonna be looking for a
- 18:23Speaker 1: job here pretty soon from the Greg Popovitch tree. Becky Hammond,
- 18:27Speaker 1: who won a championship in the WNBA, who played her
- 18:30Speaker 1: professional career in San Antonio, again from the Greg Popovitch tree.
- 18:35Speaker 1: She coached as an assistant in San Antonio. So There's
- 18:37Speaker 1: a lot of options of successful coaches who have come
- 18:42Speaker 1: from the Greg Popovitch line, but he decides to go
- 18:46Speaker 1: with Mitch Johnson, who's a young, relatively unproven head coach
- 18:52Speaker 1: thirty one and forty five this season when he was
- 18:54Speaker 1: at the helm of the Spurs. But you have to
- 18:57Speaker 1: imagine in the current NBA, in the current world we
- 19:02Speaker 1: live in, even you're not making a move like this
- 19:05Speaker 1: without calling Victor Wombenyama. The first call I'm making when
- 19:09Speaker 1: I say, if I'm Peter Holt, they head the owner
- 19:11Speaker 1: of the Santonio Spurs, but Marcy Buford or the GM
- 19:16Speaker 1: of the Spurs, I'm making the first call to women
- 19:18Speaker 1: Yama after I know, hey, we're moving into a different
- 19:20Speaker 1: direction with Pop and yeah, Pop is going to get
- 19:23Speaker 1: a huge say, right, He's going to sit at the
- 19:25Speaker 1: table decide who's going to be the heir apparent to
- 19:28Speaker 1: the franchise as the head coach. The first call I'm
- 19:32Speaker 1: making is to Victor women Hey, what do you want buddy?
- 19:35Speaker 2: Hey, big fella, how you doing.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Hey?
- 19:36Speaker 1: I saw you the other day with the Rookie of
- 19:38Speaker 1: the Year. He looked really good. Who do you want
- 19:41Speaker 1: to be the next head coach. What are you feeling?
- 19:43Speaker 1: How do you like minched this year? Do things work
- 19:45Speaker 1: the way that you went too? What can we change?
- 19:47Speaker 1: I'm appeasing the guy who's making sure all of us
- 19:50Speaker 1: stay employed. I'm appiece of the guy who makes sure
- 19:53Speaker 1: that we're going to contend for titles not only next
- 19:55Speaker 1: year but in the foreseeable future. That is who I
- 19:59Speaker 1: am playking to. Well, that's who I want to get
- 20:01Speaker 1: input from. And according to reports from San Antonio, it
- 20:05Speaker 1: sounds like that's exactly who Victor Webinyama wanted.
- 20:09Speaker 7: That.
- 20:09Speaker 1: It sounds like from the things that I'm reading, the
- 20:11Speaker 1: things that I'm seeing across my timeline, that this was
- 20:14Speaker 1: the hire. This was the decision that across the board
- 20:18Speaker 1: everybody agreed on, which should make Spurs fans rest easy
- 20:21Speaker 1: at night when you go to bed tonight, if you're
- 20:23Speaker 1: a Spurs fan, you should be yeah again. Don't cry
- 20:28Speaker 1: because it's over, Smile because it happened. Don't worry about
- 20:32Speaker 1: where this franchise is going. You were in very capable hands.
- 20:36Speaker 1: You're in the hands of Greg Povic, who's still going
- 20:38Speaker 1: to be part of the organization in the role of
- 20:40Speaker 1: President of Basketball Operations. You're in capable hands with RC Buford,
- 20:45Speaker 1: who helped build this entire thing, with Michael Wright, the
- 20:50Speaker 1: general manager, and you're in the very capable, very large
- 20:54Speaker 1: hands of Victor Webinyama. Do not worry if you're a
- 20:58Speaker 1: Spurs fan about where this this organization is going. I
- 21:03Speaker 1: have been more confident now than ever, and we're gonna
- 21:05Speaker 1: get into big moves happening in this offseason because there's
- 21:08Speaker 1: a small market superstar, a small market MVP Defensive Player
- 21:12Speaker 1: of the Year champion who might be donning a new
- 21:16Speaker 1: jersey at the beginning next year, and it's the decision
- 21:20Speaker 1: of two franchises to try to make that happen. We'll
- 21:23Speaker 1: talk to you who that is who might be coming
- 21:26Speaker 1: to the Alamo City this offseason. Now that Pop is
- 21:29Speaker 1: the president of basketball operations in Mitch Johnson now officially
- 21:32Speaker 1: the head coach going forward, now you start to figure
- 21:35Speaker 1: out what is the twenty twenty five twenty six season
- 21:38Speaker 1: gonna look like for the Spurs. We'll tell you about
- 21:41Speaker 1: that later in the program, But coming up next, it's
- 21:43Speaker 1: a Florida man Friday, and boy do we have some
- 21:45Speaker 1: good stories for you. It's inconceivable. Up next on Sports
- 21:48Speaker 1: Radio and thirteen hundred zone inconceivable, inconceivable, inconceivable, inconceivable.
- 21:56Speaker 2: In the fourth I don't think I miss what you think.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the zone not inconceivable for
- 22:07Speaker 1: andrews Zima to be sitting in the big chair on
- 22:09Speaker 1: a Florida Man Friday edition of the program, we take
- 22:14Speaker 1: you to the lowest of the lows of the Continental
- 22:20Speaker 1: forty eight. All right, let's start here A Florida alligator trapper.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Now you might have seen this video on social media already.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I watch a little bit of it. It really incapsulates
- 22:32Speaker 1: the Florida Man spirit, Florida Man Trapper, alligat trapper. He
- 22:36Speaker 1: teamed up with local authorities to capture the large reptile,
- 22:42Speaker 1: the alligator and the media.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Of a highway.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Jacksonville Sheriff's Office posts the video on social media, showing
- 22:48Speaker 1: Mike Drich, a wildlife trapper, known as colloquially on the
- 22:53Speaker 1: social media streets as quote the blue collared brawler.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Yeah, media wrestle Raatis.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Oh you gotta love that, Marcus the blues collars. He
- 23:09Speaker 1: wrestled the gator on Interstate ninety five to the south
- 23:13Speaker 1: side of Jacksonville. Quote, we were cruising down I ninety
- 23:16Speaker 1: five on the south side yesterday, and I thought I
- 23:19Speaker 1: saw a barefoot man wrestling the giant alligator in the median.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Nope, your eyes didn't trick you. It really happened.
- 23:26Speaker 1: The post Red deputies worked together with the Florida Highway
- 23:29Speaker 1: Patrol the Florida Highway Patrol to make sure they were safe.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Now the rich made headlines earlier this year. The Brawler
- 23:39Speaker 1: made headlines in April when he left his family's Eastern
- 23:42Speaker 1: dinner to capture a gator that climbed a fence into
- 23:46Speaker 1: Jacksonville woman's backyard. In the incident, he was able to
- 23:49Speaker 1: contain the reptile in the homeowners trash can. Now, I
- 23:52Speaker 1: ask you, Marcus, if you saw a gator, how far
- 23:56Speaker 1: away are you stand from it? You're getting close? You
- 23:58Speaker 1: want to brawl with it, you want to wrest it?
- 24:00Speaker 2: What are you thinking? Nah, I'm tagging that.
- 24:03Speaker 6: I'm gonna point to the other guy over there in
- 24:05Speaker 6: the corner.
- 24:06Speaker 2: I'm looking at this guy right now.
- 24:08Speaker 6: How Yeah, he's he has it pinned down pretty good.
- 24:13Speaker 2: He looks like he knows.
- 24:13Speaker 8: What he.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Looks like he knows what he's doing. I gotta give
- 24:18Speaker 1: the hats off to him. But again yaester day we
- 24:20Speaker 1: talked about the seagull Boy, the guy who won an
- 24:22Speaker 1: award for the closest seagull impression. I said that to
- 24:26Speaker 1: that kid, all right, you gotta practice that, which I
- 24:28Speaker 1: would imagine be very annoying in any family A friend
- 24:32Speaker 1: event to have a kid that can make an eagle screech?
- 24:34Speaker 1: How do you learn that you can wrestle alligators? You
- 24:37Speaker 1: gotta practice it, right.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Yeah, you gotta have that. What's that first time? You
- 24:44Speaker 2: gotta have that dog in you? All right?
- 24:46Speaker 1: Speaking of dogs, a Florida woman protected herself and her
- 24:50Speaker 1: small dog from a bear.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Okay, now how did.
- 24:54Speaker 3: She do it?
- 24:55Speaker 1: Was it with a stick a trash can?
- 24:58Speaker 3: No?
- 24:58Speaker 1: It was with a bad of cookies. Yes, Kristin Savage said.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Her and her Chihuahua mix and you gotta love the
- 25:06Speaker 1: name here Ringo. The Chihuahua Mixed Ringo were walking near
- 25:10Speaker 1: their home in mark Him Woods, near Sanford when the
- 25:13Speaker 1: close encounter with a wandering bear. I heard a bird,
- 25:17Speaker 1: and I was looking for a bird in the tree,
- 25:19Speaker 1: and then I saw this black thing coming at my leg,
- 25:22Speaker 1: she told the local TV department. I thought it was
- 25:25Speaker 1: an off the leash dog at first, and then I
- 25:28Speaker 1: realized it had a giant head. Okay, I have to
- 25:31Speaker 1: give her a little bit of credit.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Here.
- 25:33Speaker 1: The bear comes at you, and your first thought is
- 25:36Speaker 1: I guess it's a dog coming up to me.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Nope, it's a bear, all right. She said.
- 25:40Speaker 1: This particular bear was an interest in her thirteen pound dog, Ringo. Yeah,
- 25:44Speaker 1: he probably looked at it and said, you know what, lunchtime.
- 25:48Speaker 1: I hauled him like a pinata in the air and
- 25:51Speaker 1: spun to get away, she told the local TV department.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Savage said she kept spinning to keep Ringo away from
- 25:57Speaker 1: the bear, causing her to fall and curring bruises and
- 26:00Speaker 1: scrapes on her leg. Now, she said, her mom lives
- 26:04Speaker 1: down the street. She had just stopped and handed me
- 26:06Speaker 1: a bag of cookies for my kids. When I remembered
- 26:09Speaker 1: I had them in my hand, I took the bag
- 26:11Speaker 1: and whacked the bear across the face with it and
- 26:14Speaker 1: then threw it.
- 26:15Speaker 2: She said.
- 26:16Speaker 1: She came forward and then sniffed, put her head down,
- 26:18Speaker 1: sniffed the cookies, and ran away from the front door. Okay, Now,
- 26:24Speaker 1: I love cookies as much as the next guy, but
- 26:27Speaker 1: I have to say this. I think I would have
- 26:30Speaker 1: spun and hit the bear with my cookies as well. Marcus,
- 26:32Speaker 1: what do you think.
- 26:34Speaker 6: I'm more concerned about bears Mimican bird sounds.
- 26:40Speaker 1: I think that the bear. I think that the bear
- 26:43Speaker 1: has nothing to do with the bird. I think she
- 26:45Speaker 1: was distracted by the birds, and then the bear noticing
- 26:49Speaker 1: that this ringo, this Chihuahua mix is on the leash,
- 26:52Speaker 1: and hey, it's dinner time, baby, thirteen pound s hihahuah mix.
- 26:56Speaker 1: If I'm a black bear, I'm going after that thing.
- 26:58Speaker 1: This is easy pickens. Luckily for her, she had the
- 27:02Speaker 1: cookies to fight off the bear. This is one of
- 27:04Speaker 1: those two truth and the live thing though, that you
- 27:07Speaker 1: gotta love. Now, the next time that she's at like
- 27:09Speaker 1: a company function, she'll go, like, my middle name's Teresa,
- 27:13Speaker 1: I fought off a bear and I love long walks
- 27:17Speaker 1: on the beach. And you know, it turns out Teresa
- 27:20Speaker 1: isn't her actual middle name. What a job by this
- 27:24Speaker 1: Florida woman. Now, finally, again we've mentioned this before, but
- 27:29Speaker 1: my favorite stories are when wild animals are used as
- 27:32Speaker 1: pets and then then they get out right residents of
- 27:34Speaker 1: this Florida neighborhood reported citing a monkey on the loose,
- 27:38Speaker 1: which promoted officials.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Prompted officials to.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Warren locals to keep their distance the Solon Ranch neighborhood.
- 27:44Speaker 1: A homeowners association set out a warning letter to residence
- 27:48Speaker 1: you love that you pay for an hoa to get
- 27:50Speaker 1: the warnings about the loose monkeys this week, reporting some
- 27:53Speaker 1: locals had seen a monkey in your retention pond in
- 27:57Speaker 1: the backyard of Sulifon Ranch. The hoa Warren locals do
- 28:00Speaker 1: not attempt to approach or capture the loose primate.
- 28:04Speaker 2: The evils said.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Local animal control officials were investigating the sighting. The monkey
- 28:09Speaker 1: reports come exactly one year after a string of sightings
- 28:13Speaker 1: in Lake County, Okay. So the monkeys are not native
- 28:16Speaker 1: to Florida. Obviously, the population of this monkeys they live
- 28:19Speaker 1: in a wild in the state for about a decade.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Talk about an invasive species. Huh, you bring some monkeys over,
- 28:27Speaker 1: you accidentally let one of them go, and now the
- 28:28Speaker 1: next thing you know, your neighborhood's full of these little
- 28:31Speaker 1: primates climbing up around trees. Now, Marcus, you live in Austin.
- 28:35Speaker 1: What is the most annoying critter that lives in your area.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Do you have any Do you have any annoying critters?
- 28:41Speaker 1: Maybe possums, raccoons, anything like that.
- 28:46Speaker 6: I'll see apossumator once in a while, but that's about it.
- 28:51Speaker 6: Maybe maybe straight cats, some straight cats, huh.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Would you trade the vermin that you have hanging around
- 28:58Speaker 1: your place for the potential of these wild monkeys?
- 29:02Speaker 6: As I look at the BCS standings of criticisan area, No,
- 29:06Speaker 6: I would not make that trait.
- 29:09Speaker 1: The BCS standings, the computer ranked all of the critters
- 29:15Speaker 1: in your neighborhood. Whitetail dear, They're an easy easy, don't
- 29:19Speaker 1: even make the top twenty five. I would not want
- 29:22Speaker 1: anything that can get into my trash.
- 29:24Speaker 2: I've had different vermin and.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Stuff go through the garbage cans before you come out
- 29:29Speaker 1: the next morning.
- 29:29Speaker 2: You see the little footprints of the raccoons.
- 29:31Speaker 1: To have something with opposable thumbs being able to move
- 29:35Speaker 1: and get into things, I'm okay, you can keep that
- 29:37Speaker 1: those which gu Marcus is the most inconceivable.
- 29:47Speaker 6: I'm going story number one, even though I see footage, but.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Still the Florida man who is a brawler, the blue
- 29:58Speaker 1: collared brawler wrestling gators in Florida. Well, I'll do it
- 30:02Speaker 1: for a quarter man Friday on what you got for me?
- 30:05Speaker 6: I still want to see if this guy's an actual wrestler,
- 30:08Speaker 6: because I have the strangest feeling he actually wrestles.
- 30:12Speaker 2: That's his that's his night job, that's his side job.
- 30:14Speaker 3: All right.
- 30:14Speaker 1: When we come back, we'll wrap up our number one
- 30:17Speaker 1: and get you ready for some Texas baseball tonight. All
- 30:20Speaker 1: coming up next on The Craig Way Show Sports Radio
- 30:22Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred, The Zone Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
- 30:26Speaker 1: and The Zone. Andrew zimmeill hanging out with you this Friday,
- 30:30Speaker 1: Feel Good Friday Edition. Marcus spears on the ones and twos,
- 30:33Speaker 1: making this sound pretty In Austin, Texas and three seventeen,
- 30:37Speaker 1: Craig Wait joins the program to talk Texas Baseball tonight's
- 30:41Speaker 1: first pitch in game number two of the series in Fayetteville.
- 30:44Speaker 1: You can hear the game on one O three one,
- 30:46Speaker 1: Austin's eighty station six forty five ERA times seven pm.
- 30:49Speaker 1: First pitch, Craig and Keith Moreland will be on the
- 30:52Speaker 1: call from Arkansas and last night, Oh, They're going to
- 30:57Speaker 1: take me out of here in handcuffs if I keep
- 30:59Speaker 1: talking about Longhorns and winning streaks because it never fails.
- 31:02Speaker 1: It seems that every time on the jinks and I
- 31:05Speaker 1: get it, and some people don't believe in the announcer jinks.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Some people think, you know what, it's fine, the team
- 31:11Speaker 1: has to play the way they have to play. I
- 31:13Speaker 1: believe in the jinks, and I still end up walking
- 31:16Speaker 1: into it. So that tells you how smart a guy
- 31:18Speaker 1: I am. Number one rank Texas. Last night they had
- 31:22Speaker 1: a ten game win streak snapped to number eleven. Arkansas
- 31:26Speaker 1: lost a series opener nine zero on Thursday Night. Now
- 31:29Speaker 1: Longhorns picked up their first loss since April twelfth, and
- 31:33Speaker 1: the second double digit winning streak of the year. The
- 31:36Speaker 1: only similarity between last night's game and the game that
- 31:39Speaker 1: they had earlier this year, when they snapped a seventeen
- 31:41Speaker 1: game win streak.
- 31:42Speaker 2: You're right, Andrew Zimbolo on The Craigway Show.
- 31:44Speaker 1: So Arkansas scored nine runs across the first four frames,
- 31:50Speaker 1: four extra base hits. Eight of the nine Razorbacks recorded
- 31:55Speaker 1: hits last night. One of the top offensive teams in
- 31:58Speaker 1: the country just got all over my guys, rehost. He
- 32:04Speaker 1: entered tied six Nashally and wins his first loss since
- 32:08Speaker 1: March eighteenth. Now, Marcus, we have Jim slashtangle last night
- 32:12Speaker 1: from the broadcast in his post game with Keith Morland.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Right, yes, let's hear it.
- 32:22Speaker 9: You know, anytime you run into a ballgame, there are
- 32:25Speaker 9: times when something just happens to you and you could
- 32:27Speaker 9: can't overcome it.
- 32:29Speaker 2: And that's what happened tonight. Ruger just didn't have his
- 32:31Speaker 2: normal stuff, But Cody gave you something at the end
- 32:34Speaker 2: to let you rest your bullpit.
- 32:36Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, tonight was about Arkansas. You know, they
- 32:40Speaker 9: got rained out on Tuesday. They've lost what three consecutive series.
- 32:46Speaker 9: They got a chance to regroup, go to work, and
- 32:51Speaker 9: they're obviously ready.
- 32:51Speaker 3: Tonight Zach roots the story. He was awesome.
- 32:54Speaker 9: We didn't really put up much of a fight against him,
- 32:56Speaker 9: but I don't think it's not like we weren't ready
- 32:59Speaker 9: to play.
- 32:59Speaker 2: I feel really good about that.
- 33:00Speaker 9: Is is he made really good pitches and and then
- 33:03Speaker 9: you know, Ruger left some balls up.
- 33:04Speaker 3: This it's a really good team.
- 33:06Speaker 9: I mean, and and uh that this is this happens
- 33:10Speaker 9: in this league. It's way more about how how we
- 33:12Speaker 9: respond to it than it is what happened.
- 33:15Speaker 2: I'm gonna take what you just said right there?
- 33:17Speaker 9: How do you respond to What will you say, Joe
- 33:19Speaker 9: in response to this? Yeah, I mean I'm not big
- 33:21Speaker 9: on meet I mean me, I'm not big on meeting.
- 33:24Speaker 2: But I mean I'll just.
- 33:25Speaker 9: Say that, like, hey, you know, yeah, you tip your cap.
- 33:28Speaker 9: They shoved up our rear end the night in every
- 33:30Speaker 9: sense of the word, and so we're gonna be ready
- 33:32Speaker 9: to go tomorrow being there. I mean, they only use
- 33:35Speaker 9: two pitchers and they have a lot of pitching and
- 33:37Speaker 9: we have a lot of pitching. But uh, we'll be fine.
- 33:41Speaker 9: But it's this This league is about when you take
- 33:43Speaker 9: those gut punches, can you come right back? And this
- 33:46Speaker 9: is the first one we've had all year that was
- 33:48Speaker 9: out of hand early, right, So all the other losses
- 33:51Speaker 9: I think have been pretty been except for the l
- 33:54Speaker 9: s u of Kate Anderson game. That one wasn't that close, uh,
- 33:57Speaker 9: but everything else has been super tight.
- 33:59Speaker 3: So it's okay.
- 34:00Speaker 9: You know, we'll let Arkansas celebrate tonight and we'll be
- 34:03Speaker 9: ready to play tomorrow.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Thanks for taking this to Thanks you feel good. That
- 34:07Speaker 1: was Keith Morland on the broadcast last night. Texas loses
- 34:10Speaker 1: nine to zero to Arkansas in game one of the
- 34:12Speaker 1: three game series. Game two tonight, six forty five eartime,
- 34:16Speaker 1: seven pm, first pitch on one of three to one.
- 34:18Speaker 1: But there's a lot to break down in that Slashdangle
- 34:22Speaker 1: post game interview. First off, you have to give your
- 34:24Speaker 1: hats off. You gotta tip your hats to Arkansas when
- 34:27Speaker 1: you consider the last losses that the Longhorns have had.
- 34:30Speaker 1: If you compile all of those other losses together, it's
- 34:34Speaker 1: a combined score of eleven runs. So it's not like
- 34:37Speaker 1: the Longhorns losing games of this season. Even the LSC
- 34:41Speaker 1: LSU eight two loss at home is a six run game.
- 34:45Speaker 2: You feel okay about that.
- 34:46Speaker 1: It's eleven combined runs in their five previous losses.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Last night, it gets out of hand.
- 34:51Speaker 1: This is a team in Arkansas that was going to
- 34:54Speaker 1: be able to or going to try to exploit some
- 34:58Speaker 1: of those injuries the long Horns have had. When you
- 35:01Speaker 1: have your Day one starter and Spencer out for the
- 35:03Speaker 1: rest of the season, Max Blue with a thumb injury
- 35:06Speaker 1: out for a long period of time a foreseeable future.
- 35:09Speaker 1: You don't know when you're going to get your left
- 35:11Speaker 1: field or back. The injury bug comes for everybody, right
- 35:14Speaker 1: Injuries happened across That's not an excuse, but it's a
- 35:17Speaker 1: fact of life. Okay, you're going to end up slipping
- 35:21Speaker 1: up and losing games. I would rather lose a game
- 35:23Speaker 1: on the first of May than on the first day
- 35:26Speaker 1: of June.
- 35:27Speaker 2: That's kind of how I look at it.
- 35:28Speaker 1: I would rather find out, take some of those lumps,
- 35:31Speaker 1: take some of those losses now, then later. The one
- 35:34Speaker 1: thing I will say, we talked yesterday to Craig before
- 35:37Speaker 1: game number one, and we said, this is going to
- 35:39Speaker 1: be very difficult series. This isn't going to be a
- 35:42Speaker 1: razorback team that's going to roll over for Texas. And
- 35:46Speaker 1: the Longhorns had a five game lead in the standings
- 35:48Speaker 1: prior to last night's loss, with nine games, well, eight
- 35:51Speaker 1: games remaining. Now, you would think, to your eight games
- 35:54Speaker 1: remaining in SEC play, you would think to yourself, we
- 36:00Speaker 1: feel pretty confident that this is a team that could
- 36:03Speaker 1: get the number one seed going into the SEC tournament.
- 36:05Speaker 1: But she can't guarantee anything. You cannot count your chickens
- 36:09Speaker 1: before they hatch. I have been very guilty of doing
- 36:12Speaker 1: that because in a game like baseball, where it's very
- 36:16Speaker 1: very easy to become complacent, you have to treat every
- 36:19Speaker 1: single one of these teams in the SEC like they
- 36:22Speaker 1: can knock you off, because they can. It's the best
- 36:26Speaker 1: conference for baseball, point blank period. So you have to
- 36:29Speaker 1: be able to come back and find a way tonight
- 36:34Speaker 1: to win. Despite the setbacks of Longhorns are one of
- 36:37Speaker 1: four teams to start nineteen and three or better in
- 36:40Speaker 1: the SEC play since the league expanded to thirty games
- 36:44Speaker 1: back in nineteen ninety six. Now you go back and
- 36:46Speaker 1: you look at some of those other teams who were
- 36:49Speaker 1: winning games or who had a nineteen and three record
- 36:52Speaker 1: or better. It was two thousand, South Carolina twenty thirteen,
- 36:55Speaker 1: Vanderbilt twenty twenty two, Tennessee, all teams who made deep
- 36:59Speaker 1: runs in the SEC in deep runs eventually in the
- 37:04Speaker 1: College Baseball Playoffs Regionals, and to Omaha. So we'll talk
- 37:07Speaker 1: to Craig about that later. At three seventeen, he joins
- 37:12Speaker 1: the program to preview game number two, give us a
- 37:14Speaker 1: little bit of recap of what happened last night, and
- 37:17Speaker 1: I gotta get his thoughts too, as the biggest news
- 37:20Speaker 1: of the day is the movement from Greg Popovich from
- 37:24Speaker 1: the sidelines of the Spurs to now the front office
- 37:26Speaker 1: to be the team's president of basketball operations. That news
- 37:29Speaker 1: came down earlier today. Miss Johnson, congratulations, you are now
- 37:33Speaker 1: the head coach of the Spurs. All right, our number two.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Speaking of basketball, let's talk Knicks. New York Knicks. They
- 37:41Speaker 1: punched their tickets to the second round. They did it
- 37:43Speaker 1: with a jumper from Jalen Brunson. We'll talked about it
- 37:47Speaker 1: next on The Craigway Show, sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
- 37:50Speaker 1: of Zone, our number two of The Craigway Show on
- 37:54Speaker 1: sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrew Zim will
- 37:57Speaker 1: hanging out with you on a feel Good Friday edition
- 38:00Speaker 1: of The Craigway Show. We are feeling pretty pretty pretty good.
- 38:06Speaker 1: If you want to be part of the show, use
- 38:08Speaker 1: the free iHeartRadio apps talkback feature. You can get your
- 38:11Speaker 1: voice on there. We heard from Richard earlier today. We
- 38:14Speaker 1: gave you twenty four hours to think, to contemplate, to
- 38:18Speaker 1: game plan, even about who you would take if you
- 38:21Speaker 1: had to go on the way Back Machine, if you
- 38:22Speaker 1: got the time machine. In the debate that's raging online,
- 38:27Speaker 1: the one hundred men versus one gorilla, who could you
- 38:30Speaker 1: go back in time and go grab if you wanted.
- 38:32Speaker 1: I picked William Wallace, our friend Richard pick Spartacus. We
- 38:36Speaker 1: want to hear from you. If you have an answer,
- 38:38Speaker 1: please use the free iHeartRadio apps talkback feature the little
- 38:42Speaker 1: red button. Press it you have thirty seconds. You can
- 38:44Speaker 1: be part of the Craigway Show. Marcus is on the
- 38:47Speaker 1: ones and twos making this sound pretty in the free
- 38:51Speaker 1: State of Austin, Texas, which is a ton of fun.
- 38:54Speaker 2: And so speaking of this topic, I got a impus.
- 39:00Speaker 6: How about WWF Hall of Fame wrestler Gorilla?
- 39:05Speaker 2: Monsoon get a Gorilla.
- 39:10Speaker 1: So, Marcus, you were on the morning show with Mike
- 39:13Speaker 1: Carballharge and Mark Henry the World's Strongest Man seven to
- 39:16Speaker 1: nine AM right here on the zone, and I heard
- 39:19Speaker 1: Mark Henrick talking about this debate and he was saying
- 39:22Speaker 1: that if he was in the last twenty five, he
- 39:24Speaker 1: felt pretty good.
- 39:26Speaker 6: Uh yeah, Mark said he's gonna sit back. So Mark
- 39:31Speaker 6: sitting back, I'm sitting back.
- 39:34Speaker 2: I said.
- 39:35Speaker 1: When I originally brought this topic up, I was talking
- 39:37Speaker 1: to somebody and I heard Mark talk about it, and
- 39:39Speaker 1: he was like, Okay, I'm gonna sit back. But then
- 39:41Speaker 1: final twenty five I'm jumping in there. I said, if
- 39:44Speaker 1: I could go get Prime Mark Henry in this group,
- 39:47Speaker 1: you know, say a prayer for the gorilla because it's
- 39:48Speaker 1: over Prime Mark Henry.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's good. That's what do you do. That's
- 39:52Speaker 2: what he does. That is what that is what he do.
- 39:55Speaker 2: All right.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Speaking of guys going absolutely as hard as it can
- 40:00Speaker 1: in the paint, let's talk New York Knicks basketball. So
- 40:04Speaker 1: the Knicks, for the longest time, probably the majority of
- 40:07Speaker 1: my lifetime, have been a laughingstock. They finally got their
- 40:11Speaker 1: head coaching Tom Tambodeau, they finally got their star in
- 40:14Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson, and they were able to move past the
- 40:18Speaker 1: Detroit Pistons last night won sixteen one thirteen to win
- 40:22Speaker 1: the series to now go up against the Boston Celtics. Now,
- 40:26Speaker 1: this is how that final play, that final shot from
- 40:29Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson sound Mike Breen on the call.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Brunson holder, thanks, trying to wait till the ends. Bronson
- 40:36Speaker 2: puts up a three dang.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Jayleen Bruns the rare double bang from Mike Breen on
- 40:45Speaker 1: the call on ESPN that, my friends, was one of
- 40:49Speaker 1: the best shots in Knick's history. This is what you
- 40:52Speaker 1: come to the NBA Playoffs. For all of that extra
- 40:55Speaker 1: talk during the regular season, all the ratings are down,
- 40:57Speaker 1: all the products thinks, all the guys are two friends
- 41:00Speaker 1: with each other. We got two teams in New York
- 41:03Speaker 1: and Detroit who did not like each other. We got
- 41:06Speaker 1: two teams in the Knicks and the Pistons, who were
- 41:08Speaker 1: playing the closest you are going to get to nineties basketball.
- 41:13Speaker 1: You want bad boys, here's Isaiah Stort. You want big
- 41:17Speaker 1: name star, here's Jalen Brunson. Now, has it gotten a
- 41:20Speaker 1: little bit too much for me? Has it gotten a
- 41:22Speaker 1: little bit too much? And we crossed the line a
- 41:24Speaker 1: little bit here, maybe because I'm hearing people compare Jalen
- 41:28Speaker 1: Brunson to Clyde Fraser or I'm sorry, Walt Fraser, Clyde
- 41:34Speaker 1: and Patrick Ewing.
- 41:35Speaker 2: We're getting a little bit too far. Let's let's try
- 41:37Speaker 2: to win.
- 41:37Speaker 1: A couple series in a row before we start anointing
- 41:40Speaker 1: and putting jerseys and or rafters. But the Knicks get
- 41:44Speaker 1: the win, and in victory, we got an incredible quote
- 41:50Speaker 1: from Jalen Brunson.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Here it is.
- 41:51Speaker 1: This is from the post game, talking about that final
- 41:53Speaker 1: play with a Zar Thompson on him Jalen.
- 41:57Speaker 10: Obviously people are gonna be talking about your shot and
- 42:00Speaker 10: the move for god knows how long. But with a
- 42:03Speaker 10: defender like les Are and the way he was playing,
- 42:05Speaker 10: you're just what made you go to that move?
- 42:07Speaker 2: That snatchback?
- 42:08Speaker 3: What?
- 42:09Speaker 10: There was so many things that you could have done.
- 42:10Speaker 10: Did you know that that was going to work? What
- 42:12Speaker 10: made you pick that movie?
- 42:13Speaker 11: I don't really go and think, all right, I'm going
- 42:16Speaker 11: to make this move right here, It's just an instinct.
- 42:19Speaker 11: He beat me to the spot, he took me off,
- 42:22Speaker 11: just went back the other way and I found a
- 42:24Speaker 11: lot of space and those to take a shot. Man
- 42:29Speaker 11: was tough to play on c He's big time and
- 42:33Speaker 11: I told him straight towar his face after the series,
- 42:35Speaker 11: I mean, and he made me work.
- 42:36Speaker 2: So I got a lot of respect from him. And
- 42:39Speaker 2: that's what I like to see out of Galen Brunson.
- 42:42Speaker 1: To be completely honest with you, I was worried that
- 42:44Speaker 1: he was going to try to get on some sort
- 42:45Speaker 1: of like Hey, I owned him the entire series. Hey,
- 42:48Speaker 1: I absolutely demolished the Pistons because if we're being completely honest,
- 42:53Speaker 1: he played Azar Thompson played an incredible series on bruntson
- 42:58Speaker 1: Now if you go through and you look the amount
- 43:00Speaker 1: of points that they have had the seed of the
- 43:03Speaker 1: series Brunson last night forty points in the victory. But
- 43:08Speaker 1: you go through some of those shooting performances, where as
- 43:11Speaker 1: Zar Thompson was his primary defender nine of twenty four
- 43:16Speaker 1: of sixteen. So Thompson in year number two. I love
- 43:19Speaker 1: his brother Amen in Houston. I continue to tell people
- 43:22Speaker 1: that if you are a Rockets fan, you have a
- 43:25Speaker 1: great one in a men Thompson. But Bizarre has been
- 43:27Speaker 1: more of a role player type. I don't see the
- 43:30Speaker 1: same star potential out of him. What I do see
- 43:33Speaker 1: is a lot of the Tayshawn Prince, a lot of
- 43:35Speaker 1: the defense. Hey, I'm gonna go do the dirty work.
- 43:37Speaker 1: I'm not afraid to get in there and die for
- 43:39Speaker 1: loose balls. And when he was the primary defender on
- 43:42Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson this series, he made his life very difficult.
- 43:47Speaker 1: So I like that Brunson in victory, you gotta be
- 43:49Speaker 1: humble in victory, you gotta tell him, hey, he did
- 43:52Speaker 1: do an incredible job, and hey, he is one of
- 43:54Speaker 1: the younger players in this league who has a future
- 43:57Speaker 1: in this league. I loved the way the Knicks played
- 44:01Speaker 1: last night, but it did come down to one final
- 44:04Speaker 1: shot for the Pistons.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Let's see it. This is the last play of the game.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Let's hear it.
- 44:11Speaker 9: Timingham looking looking fights hardaway by the way back to Cunningham.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Final seconds over to Beastley.
- 44:17Speaker 5: He lost it out of bounds, put four tens in
- 44:20Speaker 5: a second.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Romating he was open, he was open, was.
- 44:24Speaker 8: Looking a shot before he caught it fixed in annobia.
- 44:27Speaker 3: That's it.
- 44:28Speaker 2: It's over now.
- 44:31Speaker 1: We talked all how great the Knicks are. It was
- 44:34Speaker 1: a three point game. It came down to this final play,
- 44:38Speaker 1: and that has to be We talked about the worst
- 44:40Speaker 1: ways to lose a basketball game. We talked about the
- 44:43Speaker 1: worst ways for your season to end. Can you imagine
- 44:46Speaker 1: being a Piston fan last night watching your team with
- 44:50Speaker 1: a chance to win it lose like that. Now, I'll
- 44:54Speaker 1: be honest. It was a wide open shot. You can't
- 44:57Speaker 1: be mad at Keith Cunningham for passing the ball off.
- 45:00Speaker 1: He can't be mad at him for finding an open Beasley,
- 45:02Speaker 1: who is a pretty good shooter who in situations like that.
- 45:06Speaker 1: I'm not saying he's gonna knock it down one hundred
- 45:08Speaker 1: percent at the time, but you feel pretty good when
- 45:09Speaker 1: he's shooting about a thirty five thirty percent clip for
- 45:12Speaker 1: the series from behind the Arc, that he's gonna knock
- 45:15Speaker 1: that shot down, wide open, empty gym type of situation
- 45:19Speaker 1: in front of your home crowd. The ball goes off
- 45:22Speaker 1: your hands to end the game, to end your season.
- 45:27Speaker 1: There's a lot of bad ways to lose basketball camps.
- 45:30Speaker 1: There's a lot of bad ways to lose games that,
- 45:34Speaker 1: my friend, might be the worst way to lose because
- 45:37Speaker 1: you didn't even get a shot off. It's not like
- 45:39Speaker 1: Kate Cunningham, future point guard legend for the Pistons. This kid,
- 45:44Speaker 1: if you watched him in this series, if you watched
- 45:45Speaker 1: them this season, I kind of rolled my eyes when
- 45:48Speaker 1: people were comparing him to guys like Magic Johnson, Lebron
- 45:52Speaker 1: James with the playmaking, I said, Okay, let's pump the brakes.
- 45:55Speaker 1: He's a really good playmaker, he's a really good defender,
- 45:58Speaker 1: and he made the right basketball player, which is what
- 46:00Speaker 1: you have to want out of your start, right. Okay, Hey,
- 46:03Speaker 1: I want a guy who can throw up shots and
- 46:05Speaker 1: they're gonna fall every time. I want a guy who
- 46:08Speaker 1: can posterized dudes like Anthony Edwards Kate Cunningham's not doing
- 46:12Speaker 1: any of that, but he's making smart basketball plays. He's
- 46:15Speaker 1: playing winning basketball. Beasley wide open, that's a winning play.
- 46:19Speaker 1: You give it to your guy. You just have to
- 46:21Speaker 1: hope that he's gonna catch it. It was a perfect pass.
- 46:23Speaker 1: If you saw it. It went off his arms. You
- 46:26Speaker 1: couldn't have put the ball in a better spot. And
- 46:30Speaker 1: the moment just was too big for the Pistons. Now,
- 46:32Speaker 1: this is the first time that they're in the playoffs
- 46:34Speaker 1: after a long drought, about a decade rout of missing
- 46:37Speaker 1: playoff games, missing a chance to play in meaningful basketball games.
- 46:42Speaker 1: So there's a lot of runway for this team. With
- 46:45Speaker 1: Azar Thompson and Kate Cunningham and the rest of those guys.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Tim Hardaway Junior is relatively young as well. There's a
- 46:51Speaker 1: lot of room for this team to grow and to
- 46:53Speaker 1: learn from this. But to push the Knicks, who were
- 46:58Speaker 1: the three seed, to the brink, to make it a
- 47:01Speaker 1: serious as close as it was, and to give us
- 47:04Speaker 1: exciting basketball in the first round, like this first round
- 47:06Speaker 1: of the NBA Playoffs is about as good as it's
- 47:08Speaker 1: going to get. I went back and I was thinking
- 47:11Speaker 1: through my brain, Hey, when's the last time we had
- 47:13Speaker 1: games that all every one of them felt like they
- 47:16Speaker 1: could be Eastern Conferce Finals games. Every one of these
- 47:18Speaker 1: teams feels like they could have had a chance. You
- 47:21Speaker 1: could talk me into winning a title now, Miami, no Milwaukee. Like,
- 47:27Speaker 1: I probably don't feel as happy about it as high
- 47:29Speaker 1: on those teams who end up losing the first round.
- 47:32Speaker 1: But if you told me that the Pistons would have
- 47:34Speaker 1: gone through New York and then beat up on a
- 47:36Speaker 1: team that in Boston that's a little bit beat up,
- 47:38Speaker 1: and you go and you take on the Cavs team,
- 47:41Speaker 1: you could have talked me into it. It would have taken
- 47:43Speaker 1: a little bit of convincing, but you could have talked
- 47:45Speaker 1: me into the Pistons being a team that could be
- 47:48Speaker 1: there at the end.
- 47:49Speaker 2: So I like the future for Detroit.
- 47:51Speaker 1: And now this series Nixon Celtics, this is going to
- 47:55Speaker 1: be box office. This is going to be absolutely there's
- 48:00Speaker 1: gonna be blood, there's gonna be tears, there's gonna be profanity,
- 48:03Speaker 1: it's gonna be put the kids to bed early type
- 48:05Speaker 1: of series between the Knicks and the Celtics. These are
- 48:08Speaker 1: two teams that do not like each other. These are
- 48:10Speaker 1: two cities that hate each other, and it doesn't get
- 48:12Speaker 1: better than that for a sports fan, for somebody who
- 48:15Speaker 1: doesn't have super invested interest, I'm coming just for the entertainment.
- 48:20Speaker 1: I'm coming just to the Gladiator of Calisseum to see
- 48:23Speaker 1: two teams fight it out, to duke it out, the
- 48:26Speaker 1: defending champs versus the up and coming Knicks.
- 48:29Speaker 2: I'm here for it. I love it now.
- 48:31Speaker 1: Speaking of two teams who have a lot on the line,
- 48:34Speaker 1: the series could be one or loss tonight as the
- 48:37Speaker 1: Texas Longhorns lose last night nine to zero. Game number
- 48:41Speaker 1: two Tonight, seven pm, First pitch six forty five, airtime
- 48:43Speaker 1: one O three one, Austin's eighty station. Craigway is on
- 48:46Speaker 1: the call. He joins us next to give us a
- 48:48Speaker 1: preview of tonight's Game two against the Razorbacks.
- 48:52Speaker 2: We'll have it all next. Craig Wait Show rolls on.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Andrews almost sitting in on The Craig Way Show on
- 48:56Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred, The Zone of Course Radio
- 49:01Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred The Zone edders and will hang out
- 49:03Speaker 1: with you on a feel good Friday edition of The
- 49:06Speaker 1: Craig Ways Show, and Craig Are We feeling good as
- 49:08Speaker 1: Game number two rolls on today seven pm, First pitch
- 49:11Speaker 1: six forty five air time on one oh three one,
- 49:15Speaker 1: Austin's eighty station and Craig, how are you doing today?
- 49:19Speaker 8: Listen anytime you can move on past the game like
- 49:23Speaker 8: last night. Yeah, it's good. Hey, it's it's a good
- 49:25Speaker 8: day because it's Friday. And also, the best news really
- 49:29Speaker 8: we're surrounding this series is that it looks like all
- 49:32Speaker 8: three games of the series will start at their appointed
- 49:36Speaker 8: times and be played at their scheduled times. And what
- 49:39Speaker 8: I mean by that is when I flew in on
- 49:43Speaker 8: the charter with the team on Wednesday night we land
- 49:45Speaker 8: or Wednesday afternoon, when we landed, it was just torrential rain.
- 49:50Speaker 8: It was pouring, it was in sheets, but it cleared
- 49:52Speaker 8: out by Wednesday night.
- 49:54Speaker 3: It was beautiful conditions.
- 49:55Speaker 8: Obviously, the game from the Texas perspective was not beautiful,
- 49:59Speaker 8: but the otherwise it was a gorgeous evening for baseball
- 50:05Speaker 8: in an absolutely beautiful ballpark. And it's hard to ask
- 50:09Speaker 8: for more than that, you know, other than having a
- 50:11Speaker 8: chance to try to win a game. And then the
- 50:14Speaker 8: other concern was for tonight's game because yesterday they were
- 50:18Speaker 8: calling them for an eighty five percent chance of rain,
- 50:20Speaker 8: but we were told that there was a decent chance
- 50:23Speaker 8: it might clear out by mid afternoon. Well that's largely
- 50:28Speaker 8: what's happened. It's still overcast, but it's not raining, and
- 50:32Speaker 8: there was a lot of rain last night. It's not raining.
- 50:35Speaker 8: It's like sixty eight degrees here, so it's nice in
- 50:38Speaker 8: that respect. And it's supposed to get even a little
- 50:40Speaker 8: clearer by game time tonight with the game starting one
- 50:43Speaker 8: hour later than last night's game, and that was scheduled
- 50:47Speaker 8: that way. It'll start at seven o'clock, so it looks
- 50:50Speaker 8: great for that. In tomorrow afternoon's supposed to beautiful day,
- 50:53Speaker 8: sunny day for the finale of the three game series.
- 50:56Speaker 8: So you can hardly ask for anything more than that,
- 50:58Speaker 8: the fact that they're going to get to play all
- 51:01Speaker 8: three games that they're appointed star times.
- 51:03Speaker 1: So I gave myself a little bit too much credit.
- 51:05Speaker 1: It sounds like I was saying that it's my fault
- 51:07Speaker 1: of the Longhorns ten game win streak got snapped because
- 51:09Speaker 1: I talked about it, and superstition says, don't say anything
- 51:12Speaker 1: during a no hitter, don't say anything during a win streak,
- 51:15Speaker 1: but you're giving more credit to zach Rut.
- 51:19Speaker 8: If I'm looking at zach Rut and your irrational, erotic superstitions,
- 51:25Speaker 8: I'm going with zach Rut was he was some kind
- 51:29Speaker 8: of marvelous best picture of the Long Orange have face
- 51:31Speaker 8: this year without question. Now, and let me make sure
- 51:34Speaker 8: I got something straight on this m Did you say
- 51:37Speaker 8: the last time that you were talking about this, Texas
- 51:40Speaker 8: had a seventeen game winning streak. Snap, Does that correct?
- 51:42Speaker 2: I believe so?
- 51:43Speaker 3: I believe so. Okay, that was the LSU game.
- 51:47Speaker 8: Now think about that against two of the best teams,
- 51:50Speaker 8: the teams that were tied for second coming into this weekend,
- 51:53Speaker 8: and a team that had an incredible starting pitcher in
- 51:59Speaker 8: Kate Anderson, who was as good as anybody the Long
- 52:02Speaker 8: Orange had faced this season up until last night. And
- 52:05Speaker 8: Zach Route was tremendous. He scattered two singles, that's all,
- 52:08Speaker 8: it was, two singles. Through eight innings. He struck out eleven.
- 52:13Speaker 8: Was just lights out at times. He mixed his fastball
- 52:18Speaker 8: with a devastating curve and an effective change up to
- 52:23Speaker 8: the point where you could just tell when the long
- 52:24Speaker 8: runs are coming to the plate. It was almost like
- 52:27Speaker 8: a guessing game, what's he going to throw me next?
- 52:29Speaker 8: And Keith Morland, new of course was an All American
- 52:32Speaker 8: at Texas and was a major leaguer, you know, for
- 52:37Speaker 8: the better part of thirteen years, said there are nights
- 52:40Speaker 8: when you go to you've done all the scouting report,
- 52:44Speaker 8: you know what the guy's going to throw, but yet
- 52:46Speaker 8: when you walk to the plate, you're completely off balanced
- 52:50Speaker 8: for whatever reason, and you're expecting fastball, and you get
- 52:53Speaker 8: a curveball, and you're expecting curve and you get the change.
- 52:55Speaker 3: You expect change, you get the fastball.
- 52:58Speaker 8: They just could not get him figured out last night,
- 53:02Speaker 8: and he just well placed pitches very very well. That's
- 53:06Speaker 8: on the defensive side, and it really set the table
- 53:08Speaker 8: for what their offense does. Their offense came into this
- 53:11Speaker 8: weekend series batting three twenty as a team and three
- 53:16Speaker 8: thirteen in conference play.
- 53:17Speaker 3: They looked every bit the part. Last night.
- 53:20Speaker 8: Rugeri Ojas had a one two three inning, but after
- 53:23Speaker 8: he struck out the leadoff guy in the second, he
- 53:25Speaker 8: gave up a double, a two run homer, and a
- 53:27Speaker 8: base hit before he got out of the inning with
- 53:29Speaker 8: a double play and thought, okay, well, maybe it is
- 53:31Speaker 8: settled into that. But then in the third he hit
- 53:34Speaker 8: the leadoff batter, struck out the next then had a
- 53:39Speaker 8: pass ball that allowed the leadoff guy to get the
- 53:41Speaker 8: second walk the next guy, and then a flyball out.
- 53:44Speaker 8: There were two down and he had an to two
- 53:47Speaker 8: count on cam Kozl. If he gets his strike out
- 53:50Speaker 8: there and leaves it at to nothing, who knows if
- 53:53Speaker 8: it changes things. Instead, Kocher was able to work it
- 53:56Speaker 8: back full and then blasted a three run homer.
- 53:58Speaker 3: It was five to nothing.
- 53:59Speaker 8: And then after that, as the old high school football
- 54:02Speaker 8: coaches would say, it was shows he'd get the sweeper,
- 54:04Speaker 8: because it was from there on out it was the
- 54:07Speaker 8: Razorbacks were in control of the ball game. It's a
- 54:09Speaker 8: really good ball club. Yeah, they'd lost their last three series,
- 54:12Speaker 8: three heart fault series to two of three really good
- 54:17Speaker 8: ball clubs in Georgia and Texas, A and M in Florida,
- 54:20Speaker 8: teams in the upper half of the conference standings. But
- 54:23Speaker 8: we've known all along this is a really, really good team.
- 54:25Speaker 8: They had their shot earlier in the season. They were
- 54:28Speaker 8: the number one ranked team in the country. So yeah,
- 54:31Speaker 8: it's we said this was going to be a difficult
- 54:34Speaker 8: series going into the weekend. It's proven it through part one.
- 54:36Speaker 8: Now we'll see what happens in part two tonight.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Now you're bging the drum Yachday. You said, hey, this
- 54:40Speaker 1: is not going to be an easy series. I agree
- 54:42Speaker 1: with you. I'm worried though, that there's starting to become
- 54:44Speaker 1: a blueprint. And again it's you know, you get the
- 54:47Speaker 1: number what three pitcher in the SEC maybe en route
- 54:51Speaker 1: you get a top guy. I'm worried that if this
- 54:54Speaker 1: starts turning into a blueprint that hey, this is how
- 54:56Speaker 1: you beat Texas.
- 54:58Speaker 8: How you beat Texas you get a really good pitcher
- 55:00Speaker 8: to start off with, and then and then and then
- 55:03Speaker 8: you go after I will say this too as Zim.
- 55:06Speaker 8: Here's something else. Keep in mind, it's not like log
- 55:10Speaker 8: worns have been exactly living a charmed light with all
- 55:16Speaker 8: the key injuries that they sustained. Oh bump and make plays,
- 55:22Speaker 8: get a crucial hit, come up with a big out
- 55:25Speaker 8: of the bullpen. We talked about that win any way
- 55:27Speaker 8: mentality or win any way mentality yesterday.
- 55:32Speaker 3: But maybe maybe the.
- 55:35Speaker 8: Lack of top of the lineup guys is starting to
- 55:39Speaker 8: catch up a little bit as they as they close
- 55:41Speaker 8: with this grind.
- 55:42Speaker 3: We'll see now they hope to get Max Blue back.
- 55:45Speaker 8: I think my conference tournament play maybe incredibly optimistically, thinking
- 55:52Speaker 8: maybe even for the Oklahoma Series in a couple of weeks.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Uh.
- 55:55Speaker 8: But that's that's, you know, again looking at the glass
- 55:58Speaker 8: half full and hoping for the best on that. But
- 56:00Speaker 8: I think a more realistic projection might be for the
- 56:03Speaker 8: conference tournament the following.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Okay, that's one guy.
- 56:06Speaker 8: You know, they know they're not going to get Jared
- 56:08Speaker 8: Spencer back, And I'll get back to the pitching in
- 56:10Speaker 8: a minute. The other two guys, Adrian Rodriguez, of course,
- 56:14Speaker 8: is still has that sore hamate that has prevented him
- 56:18Speaker 8: from being able to swing the bat right handed. Now
- 56:21Speaker 8: he's made adjustments against left handed pitching and he got
- 56:24Speaker 8: one of the two long warned hits last night, and
- 56:26Speaker 8: it was against a left hander. He will be facing
- 56:28Speaker 8: a right hander tonight, so that's that's better because he's
- 56:31Speaker 8: batting well over three hundred against right handers and he's
- 56:34Speaker 8: able to play a fielding position, but still not one
- 56:37Speaker 8: hundred percent in that he's able to bat right handed
- 56:40Speaker 8: against left handed pitching. And then they have Ethan Mendoza,
- 56:44Speaker 8: who was really a glue guy in the infield, but
- 56:47Speaker 8: since he injured the shoulder in the Kentucky Series three
- 56:49Speaker 8: weeks ago, has been limited only to dhing And you say, okay, well,
- 56:53Speaker 8: he still has the bat in there and he's leading
- 56:55Speaker 8: the long runs in batting average. Absolutely true, and I
- 56:58Speaker 8: think they'd really be in a lot of trouble they
- 57:00Speaker 8: didn't have that part of it. But what it does
- 57:02Speaker 8: do is it forces Jim slash Eagle to use that
- 57:07Speaker 8: DH spot where he might be able to use it
- 57:11Speaker 8: in a different spot and play him instead play Mendoza
- 57:14Speaker 8: at second base, but he's unable to do that right now.
- 57:18Speaker 3: Now.
- 57:18Speaker 8: We saw Jona Williams get the other hit for Texas,
- 57:21Speaker 8: and he's an exciting youngster, but he still has a
- 57:25Speaker 8: long ways to go. So the mixture of the veterans
- 57:28Speaker 8: and the younger guys and the transfers and all that stuff,
- 57:31Speaker 8: sometimes eventually you do hit a little bit.
- 57:33Speaker 3: Of a wall there.
- 57:34Speaker 8: I don't think that was necessarily the case last night.
- 57:37Speaker 8: That was more about Zach Roots, But the rest of
- 57:40Speaker 8: the weekend may give us more of an indication of
- 57:44Speaker 8: where Texas is going into the final two weekends.
- 57:47Speaker 3: The next two weekends, I.
- 57:48Speaker 8: Still think this as we look at it, Andrew, if
- 57:52Speaker 8: they win even one game this weekend and maybe to
- 57:55Speaker 8: the next weekend, won the following week when I still
- 57:58Speaker 8: think they're going to wind up being the number on
- 58:00Speaker 8: overall seat because they're gonna win the SEC with that combination.
- 58:03Speaker 8: And uh, and there's a you know, a better than
- 58:08Speaker 8: reasonable chance that which whichever team wins the SEC regular
- 58:13Speaker 8: season title is going to be the number one all seed,
- 58:15Speaker 8: number one overall seed for the NCAA tournament.
- 58:17Speaker 1: I agree with you. I like where your heads at.
- 58:19Speaker 1: I do worry about limping into the SEC tournament. I
- 58:22Speaker 1: would like I would like.
- 58:23Speaker 3: To limping right now. That's that's true.
- 58:25Speaker 8: They're limping, and and and uh that the hope is
- 58:29Speaker 8: is that they'll be less limping by the time they
- 58:32Speaker 8: get to the tournament. That they may have Blue back
- 58:34Speaker 8: in the lineup, and that and that may be Mendoza
- 58:37Speaker 8: or or Rodriguez is able to bout ride handed that time. Uh,
- 58:43Speaker 8: they're really hoping time heals the wounds. In this case,
- 58:46Speaker 8: they have no choice to have to go. And let
- 58:48Speaker 8: me also say this, Uh, other guys have to step up.
- 58:51Speaker 8: There's there's there's guys.
- 58:52Speaker 3: Uh.
- 58:53Speaker 8: They quite frankly, Uh they've got some guys who, uh,
- 58:58Speaker 8: we've seen perform much better at the plate than they
- 59:02Speaker 8: have been of late. Jalen Force comes to mind, Will
- 59:05Speaker 8: Gasparino comes to mind, even Casey Borba comes to mind.
- 59:08Speaker 8: There's are guys batting in the two hundreds right now,
- 59:11Speaker 8: they're not batting in the three hundreds, and.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Craig is still there. Looks like we lost Craig. We'll
- 59:21Speaker 1: try to get it back here pretty soon. It's interesting
- 59:25Speaker 1: because I wanted to talk to Craig about the pitching
- 59:27Speaker 1: lineups tonight and who's lined up to start for the
- 59:30Speaker 1: University of Texas and who's lined up to start for Arkansas.
- 59:34Speaker 1: I was getting curious, so I wanted to hear what
- 59:36Speaker 1: he had to say when it came to who else
- 59:38Speaker 1: needs to step up?
- 59:39Speaker 2: Here?
- 59:39Speaker 1: It is I'm here connected again. Okay, we dropped out
- 59:42Speaker 1: a little bit there, Craig. You were talking about guys
- 59:44Speaker 1: who need to step up hitting the two hundreds, need
- 59:46Speaker 1: to hit the three hundreds.
- 59:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, And I think that's that's part of it.
- 59:49Speaker 8: I do think that I think that those guys do
- 59:55Speaker 8: have to step up in addition to the ones that
- 59:57Speaker 8: have to get healthy.
- 59:57Speaker 3: You have to do that and then the other. The
- 59:59Speaker 3: one other piece of that is.
- 1:00:02Speaker 8: How comfortable does Jim Schlasnagel and Max Wiener feel about
- 1:00:07Speaker 8: the rotation right now because that third starter has been
- 1:00:10Speaker 8: put into question because of the season ending injury to
- 1:00:15Speaker 8: Jared Spencer. It's kind of TBA Tomar. It could be
- 1:00:19Speaker 8: Jason Flores, uh, but it could be somebody else depending,
- 1:00:22Speaker 8: So I think I think there's some questions that they're
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: looking to get answered there.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Also, Well, it's funny too, Crec, because we were talking earlier.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: I think this season, I said, hey, do we have
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: a third guy? We were trying to figure it out.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: We found our third guy, and then now injuries, we're
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: looking for the third guy again. Tonight's matchup Texas lefty
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Luke Harrison versus Arkansas right handed pitcher Gauge Wood. What's
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: the deal, root Wood? What what's tomorrow?
- 1:00:44Speaker 8: It's the the pitcher uh tonight?
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: Uh?
- 1:00:48Speaker 8: For for the Razorbacks, I believe. Let me just double check,
- 1:00:54Speaker 8: because they may have made a change on what they
- 1:00:57Speaker 8: were going to do with their with their st rarnning
- 1:01:00Speaker 8: lineup and their starting rotation. Tonight, we've seen two guys.
- 1:01:04Speaker 8: I would tell you that the other. The guy who's
- 1:01:07Speaker 8: going to start for Arkansas tonight is Gabe Gackle. He's
- 1:01:10Speaker 8: a right hander. Gackle is from what I've been told,
- 1:01:15Speaker 8: Wood has has started now. Having said that, well we'll
- 1:01:20Speaker 8: wait and see, because, like you, I saw Gage Wood
- 1:01:22Speaker 8: listed on one set a publication, then I saw Gackle
- 1:01:27Speaker 8: list on the other, so we'll double check on that.
- 1:01:29Speaker 8: But both are right handers, and both are guys who
- 1:01:34Speaker 8: who have you know, fastball slider change. They're not, they're
- 1:01:38Speaker 8: not incredibly confusion guys. So the left handed hitters in
- 1:01:43Speaker 8: the Texas lineup will need to step up. We know
- 1:01:45Speaker 8: Luke Harrison is starting for the Longhorns tonight, and he's
- 1:01:48Speaker 8: got to be able to get the breaking ball over
- 1:01:50Speaker 8: and try not to hit batters. He's hit fifteen this year,
- 1:01:54Speaker 8: so so they, you know, if they can then get
- 1:01:58Speaker 8: that kind of consistency. And he gave them a marvelous
- 1:02:02Speaker 8: effort in the win over Texas A and M last Saturday,
- 1:02:05Speaker 8: so they need another effort like that tonight.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: All right, well, Craig, you're on the calls. It's forty
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: five hour times seven pm. First pitch from Fayeville, Arkansas, Texas,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: one of three to one Austin's ASA stations where you
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: can hear it.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: Thanks so much. Do I missing anything?
- 1:02:17Speaker 8: Yeah, you didn't ask me about the biggest story of
- 1:02:19Speaker 8: the day.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: Which would be the Popovich story, or is it?
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 1:02:23Speaker 8: I was talking about Texas Beach Volleyball winning their first
- 1:02:26Speaker 8: ever NCAA Tournament match today hey Stein Metzger's team, first
- 1:02:31Speaker 8: time ever in the NCAA tournament, first time to be
- 1:02:35Speaker 8: eligible to be in.
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: The NCAA tournament.
- 1:02:37Speaker 8: And they go to golf Sours, Alabama play cal and
- 1:02:41Speaker 8: it comes down to the final game in the final
- 1:02:44Speaker 8: match to win the duel, and they do it, and
- 1:02:47Speaker 8: they wind up winning the match three two, and Texas
- 1:02:51Speaker 8: Beach Volleyball will play TCU in the quarterfinals tomorrow. That
- 1:02:55Speaker 8: was you know, it's partly tongue in cheek, but I
- 1:02:58Speaker 8: know folks are very very excited about that. That's a
- 1:03:00Speaker 8: great step forward for that Texas Softball. By the way,
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: one over Kentucky that they were in a grinder and
- 1:03:05Speaker 8: they won seven to five, So they won the first
- 1:03:07Speaker 8: two games of that series. But yes, with regard to
- 1:03:09Speaker 8: Greg Popovich, you and I were talking about during a break,
- 1:03:13Speaker 8: I think it's you know, I think we all knew
- 1:03:17Speaker 8: it was coming at some point, and still at all
- 1:03:19Speaker 8: it's kind of jarring considering he's been the coach since
- 1:03:22Speaker 8: what ninety seven, so it's been a long time and
- 1:03:27Speaker 8: now this will be a whole new world for the
- 1:03:30Speaker 8: Spurs and for Spurs fans.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: This is why he is a radio Hall of Famer.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: It's Craig Way. Craig, thank you so much, man, my pleasure.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: He's on the Call to the Night six forty five
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: ever times seven pm. First Pitch from Arkansas one O

- 1:04:32Speaker 1: raging all week long.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: I gave you.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: Twenty four hours to think about it. I have picked
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: my time traveler. If I had to have one to
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: fight in the one hundred v one battle against a gorilla,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: one hundred of mankind's best, maybe not brightest against a gorilla,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: who would you pick? If you get one historical figure,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: who would it be? You can use the free iHeart
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: Radio apps talkback feature to give us your answer. I
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: picked William Wallace Marcus. You picked a WWF wrestler. Am
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: I correct? The gorilla man?
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: Gorilla? Monsoon there you go.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: And our friend Richard used the talkback feature to send
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: in Spartacus, which I don't think is a bad idea either.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: If you have a better one, send it in. Use
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: the free I Heit Radio apps talkback feature. That is
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: the way to do it. Okay, a lot of things changing,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: a lot of things moving. It's not springtime, it's summertime
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: now and the NBA is in their playoffs. Change is occurring.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Things are happening. Teams are getting knocked out, other teams
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: are making moves. The Spurs decide to move on from
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Greg Povich, who's going to be the president of basketball Operations,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: announced today he's moving away from the sideline into the box.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: He's still going to be very involved in the team,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: but he is no longer on the sideline. Mis Johnson,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: who is the acting head coach, last season thirty one
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: and forty five record in the Greg Popovic absence. He
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: will now be the head coach of the San Antonio
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: Spurs moving forward. Another team that might be making some
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: changes is the Milwaukee Bucks after losing in five games
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: to the Indiana Pacers a gentleman's sweep. Is Jannis Tukupo Happy,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: the former MVP Defensive Player of the Year and champion
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: of the Bucks. It appears that he might be on
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: the move, and one Brian Winhorse from ESPN spoke on
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: Get Up this morning about two Texas teams that could
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: have their eye on the Buck.
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: I want to point two teams out to you, the
- 1:06:37Speaker 7: San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets. Both of them
- 1:06:41Speaker 7: are in the lottery. San Antonio, I know, Houston still playing.
- 1:06:44Speaker 7: They might win tonight. They're in the lottery. They have
- 1:06:46Speaker 7: Phoenix's pick, which is a whole other problem. They have
- 1:06:49Speaker 7: a whole bunch of pieces on their roster. What if
- 1:06:52Speaker 7: they hop up into that top four? Look out there.
- 1:06:55Speaker 7: The other one is the San Antonio Spurs. They have
- 1:06:58Speaker 7: two picks in this in this lottery. Now combine, there're
- 1:07:02Speaker 7: only a thirty percent chance of getting to the top four.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: What if one of them does? What if both of
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: them do?
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: All of a sudden, you've got San Antonio with Victor
- 1:07:10Speaker 7: Webbin Yama, Daron Fox, and potentially a game changing draft
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: pick with the rookie of the years to Fan Castle
- 1:07:16Speaker 7: sitting there as well. So first, we're going to watch
- 1:07:19Speaker 7: the lottery that and so is Giannis. After that we're
- 1:07:21Speaker 7: going to reevaluate. But we're going to see a lot
- 1:07:24Speaker 7: of things present themselves for the Bucks and Giannis over
- 1:07:27Speaker 7: this next month.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: I used to think guys like Brian win Horse and
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: other NBA insiders quote unquote, we're just like you or
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: me gas bags.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: I always just expected them.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: Okay, they might have a little bit more insight, but
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: let's actually see where this goes. And for Brian Windhorse,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: who is number one beat since being at ESPN, his
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: beat has been Lebron James, he of anybody at that
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: network would be pretty tapped in on what a superstar
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: is going to do. Right, I feel very confidence say
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: that where there's smoke, there is fire. And if Windy
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: is speaking as I would say assuredly as he is
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: about the potential for women yacht or for a Victor
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: Ontotakupo to goes somewhere, I think that there's a little
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: bit of fire there in the world where he does
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: get moved. It makes the most sense to go to
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: a team that has the most assets, and not only
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: assets that you're trading away potentially, but assets you could
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: pair him next to Giannis does not want to get
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: traded for your entire team, And then what now I
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: have to be on a different team, but we're still rebuilding.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: There's nothing new, and also we don't have any of
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: our picks. You gave all your picks away to bring
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: me in. No, I want to go to a team
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: where there's a young asset. I want to go to
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: a team where there's a young asset and a young
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: head coach and a potential to win something. That's my
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: end goal. If I'm onto Takoupo, my end goal is
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: to continue to collect trophies. That's what I play the
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: sport for. I want to go somewhere and win. Obviously,
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: Victor Women would not be in any sort of trade
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: for a guy like Giannis. Obviously a guy like Shanegoon
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: or Jalen Green probably wouldn't be in a move for
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: a guy like Giannis. But those future Houston Rockets players,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: those future San Antonio Spurred players would be in a trade.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: The one hiccup I have after Steph Castle wins Rookie
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: of the Year, I don't really want to let him go.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: I like Steph castle rookie contract. He obviously has shown
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: that he is the next big thing. He could be
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: that type of point guard that you're looking for. The
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: type of guard you're looking for plays two ways incredibly well,
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: and I really want to give him up for a
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: guy like Yiannis. I know, Sue Me. I like Giannis.
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: I think he's a great player, top five player, in
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: the world right now. But do I want to give
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: up a guy like Castle for him? That would be
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: my only hiccup. And we'll see. Time will tell. The
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: NBA draft and lottery both down the line. NBA playoffs
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: are here, curly, so I'm gonna sit back. I'm gonna
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: watch the playoffs and see how those teams develop, see
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: how the teams that are still in it play. Before
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: I get to excited about a guy like Yeah, it's
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: potentially dawning the Silver and Black, all right. When we
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: come back, we'll wrap up our number two Texas Baseball
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: tonight six forty five airtime seven pm. First pitch one
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: oh three to one. We'll talk a little Texas baseball
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: next on The Craigway Show on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: hundred The Zone. Were wrapping up our two of The
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Craigway Show on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: Andrews and We'll sitting in for Craig this afternoon. Craig
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: on the call tonight as number one Texas takes on
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: the Arkansas Razorbacks. Last night, kind of ugly nine to
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: zero loss for the Longhorns. In that loss, though, Zach
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: Root the left handed pitcher for Arkansas. Well, he played
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: pretty pretty pretty good ninety nine pitches to lead fifth
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: ranked Razorbacks over top ranked Texas.
- 1:10:57Speaker 8: Uh.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: You heard him, Craig talk about a little earlier this hour.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: Had a career high in innings pitched and strikeouts eleven,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: allowed two hits and two walks in the wind for Arkansas. Now,
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Texas had a ten game winning streak snapped. And I
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: was telling you earlier today as well that I take
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: a little bit of credit for that.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: Because I jinxed them. That's on me. I'm superstitious.
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: Now.
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: It's funny, is everybody else in my life is very
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: anti superstition. I don't understand it. Maybe it's because, let's
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: think about this, talk it out. A lot of my
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: friends are broadcasters. That's what happens when you work in radio.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: You start making friends with the same people who do
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: the job with you. And all of my friends are
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: very anti superstition. They say, you know, the announcers jinks
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: isn't real when it comes to hey, this guy hasn't
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: missed a field goal from this distance all season long.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: Don oh, well, there's first time for everything. I think
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: maybe that's what it is that they don't want to
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: take credit or blame for when they jinx a certain
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Now again, you think about it, you think it through
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: all right. A lot of my friends are broadcasters. They
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: don't want to take credit or blame for these type
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: of things. They aren't going to buy into the fact
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: that andrews Zimmo goes on the radio on sports Radio
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred zone on the flagship for the Texas
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: Athletics and talks about a ten game win streak and
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: then immediately gets snapped. And not only snapped, but he
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: is a loss that's unlike any other loss this season.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: Longhorns lost five games up until that point. Yesterday, combined
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: run differential eleven take all five of the losses the
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: eleven run difference. Last night they lose nine to zero targets,
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: so they get shut out for the first time this season. Again,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: I'm just trying to give credit where credit is due,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: and sometimes not all.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: Credit is good credit.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: You're just putting it out there now, Marcus, what is
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: your take on this? Marcus is running our board here
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: in Austin. Do you believe in the announcers jinks? Do
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: you think that when an announcer comes on and talks
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: about a no or mentions the teams on a win streak,
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: or mentions a guy hasn't missed a kick. Do you
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: believe in that jinx that sometimes, you know, the powers
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: that be, the football gods of sports gods, will play
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: with the results because of the announcer.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: Oh, one hundred percent.
- 1:13:18Speaker 6: Do I can give you exact moments of jinx back
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: in like nineteen, I want to say, ninety nine when
- 1:13:26Speaker 6: the Falcons played the Minnesota Vikings JC champions.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: Oh, it was ninety eight. Yeah, and they.
- 1:13:34Speaker 6: Kept putting up Anderson's streak of how many he hit
- 1:13:41Speaker 6: in a row or I think he had missed any
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: the whole year. And that's when and I remember a
- 1:13:47Speaker 6: buddy of Mines said right next to me, said, he's
- 1:13:49Speaker 6: gonna miss one of these field goals because they keep
- 1:13:52Speaker 6: they keep mentioning it.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: And that's exactly what happened.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: Now, Marcus, you might not know this about me, which
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: makes us that much worse. I'm a diehard Vikings fan.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: I've been a Vikings fan my entire life. That right there,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: unknown to you. You didn't know that. You just brought
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: that up organically. You just said, Hey, here's the most
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: obvious announcers jinks of all time.
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: Unbeknownst to you, you.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Were talking to the person who has been hurt maybe
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: the most from that announcer's jinx. This is truly an
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: incredible moment in sports talk radio history, Marcus, that you
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: would bring this up, that you would say, Hey, the
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: one time I remember this so vividly remember this. Yeah, no,
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: I agree with you. That is an announcer's jinks. And
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: it does sit very very hard. It rolls around my neck.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: That's the type of paint Brandt's.
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: So you have to learn to use your powers for good.
- 1:14:45Speaker 6: So you have to jinx the other teams. I'm a
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: big Rockets fan, So if you got anything on Steph
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: Curry or you know, Draymond Green or any one of
- 1:14:57Speaker 6: those Warriors, you can just don't spit that right now
- 1:15:00Speaker 6: about how hot they are in the playoffs or how
- 1:15:03Speaker 6: many years they've been successful.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: And let's do it all right, let's we'll do that
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: to wrap up hour number two.
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: Now, there were Houston Rockets.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: I was trying to compare them last yesterday to what
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: type of rivalry does one side never win?
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: You think the Coyote and the road Runner in Loonitunes.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: It's a rivalry, but it's really one sided. The Roadrunner
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: doesn't lose to the Coyote, And so far throughout the
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: history of the last decade of Warriors basketball, they really
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: haven't had a rival You want to say the Cleveland
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: Cavaliers beating them three to one, that's fine, But the
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: Houston Rockets were the only team in the Western Conference
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: that really tried, really pushed them to the break to
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: try to make something happen. So when you take history
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: into account, when you think about the last decade of
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: basketball in the NBA and how many great players have
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: come through the city of Houston, and how many great
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: coaches and games have happened in Houston, you think to yourself, well,
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: there's no way at the Houston Rockets win this series,
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: being down three to two and the you know what,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Marcus for you, I'll jinx it right now. They play tonight.
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: It's eight PM. It's game number six. The Rockets are
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: down three games to two. Bye bye, good night, it's over.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: You can count it now. The Warriors the seventh seed.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: They'll advance. It'll be a low seeded Western Conference semifinals.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Six seeded Minnesota versus seven seeded Golden State. I'm jinxing
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: for you here, Marcus, You're welcome. It's the reverse jinks
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: for you. Put it to bed, Houston Rockets. It's over,
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: it's done. Good night, all right. When we come back,
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: our number three of the Craigways Show rolls on. Speaking
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: of saying goodnight, the Denver Nuggets they're holding on game
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: number seven Clippers waiting yesterday. Game number seven happening on Saturday.
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: Will get you ready for it.
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: Next.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: Andrew's almost sitting in for Craigway on sports Radio AM
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: thirteen hundred.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: The Zone.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred is Zone. Happy Friday to you.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: Hopefully you're having a good one. If this is your
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: final day of the week, congratulations. If this is where
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: your week starts, well thanks for starting it with us. Andrews,
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: I will sitting in for Craigway as we were going
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: to our number three of the Craigway Show.
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: If you miss any of the.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Program, feel free to go back and listen to it
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: on the free iHeartRadio app the podcast page. We podcast
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: the entire show for you. If you miss any of
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: the fun, don't feel bad. You can jump in you
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: can listen to it. We're also taking your talkbacks today.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: We have been debating it all week on the interwebs.
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: The debate has raged on one hundred v one man
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: versus gorilla. I know it's kind of silly, it's kind
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: of crazy, you know what. This type of conversations that
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: really get the juices flung, and it tells me a
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: lot about you. It's one of those questions that if
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: I ask you at a dinner party, what do you
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: think I'm going to know a lot about you off
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: of your answer. If you're somebody that says, you know,
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: I don't know one hundred, but it's a gorilla. I'm
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: taking the gorilla. I know about your spirit. I know
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: that you're not competitive. I know that you don't have
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: that spirit of competitiveness that you need to have. If
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: you and ninety nine of your friends want to take
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: on a gorilla, all right, that's all I gotta say. Marcus,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: you guys have debated on the Morning show. Have you
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: decided what side you're on?
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: I look at it realistically, it's a gorilla. A gorilla
- 1:18:29Speaker 6: is basically a tank. But if I'm like a coach,
- 1:18:33Speaker 6: then I picked some plills I'm not volunteering myself in it,
- 1:18:37Speaker 6: but I picked some plills if they game to do it.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: See, we talked about it on the off air. I
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: mentioned to a couple of people. We've also said that
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: if you could go back in time and take one person, now,
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: I pick William Wallace. Our listener Ronald called in or Yeah,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: Ronald called in on the talkback feature and said he's
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: taken Spartacus.
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: Both similar in mindset.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: I'm not looking for somebody who's gonna knock the gorilla
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: out one punch. And you know, I've seen Mike Tyson
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: talked about I've seen other people talked about, Uh, I'm
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: taking somebody who's going to be able to get everybody
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: on the same page. I'm looking for a leader who's
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: not afraid to get in there and get their hands journey.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: I like to think I have a little bit of
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: William Wallace, a little bit of Spartacus in me. But
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: it's nice to have that guy who we're saying, all right, hey,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: that's the dude, he's going in there, I'm following him.
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: We're looking for somebody who can take the lead and
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: get the rest of the troops going. That guy for
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: the LA Clippers. Let's hear it.
- 1:19:34Speaker 6: Oh, I got a second pick because we'll go stay
- 1:19:37Speaker 6: with the thing with you know, I said Gorilla Monsoon,
- 1:19:40Speaker 6: I'm gonna go with the Phoenix Sun Gorilla.
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: Okay, all right, this will sign him up, all right.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: Speaking of guys to lead you into battle, Tyron Lou Tylu,
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: the LA Clippers head coach, he rattled the cage for
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: him team. His team had their back against the walls,
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: three two series lead for the Denver Nuggets going into
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: a pivotal a pivotal Game number five. All right, this
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: is where I'm sorry. Game number six. All of the
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: marbles were on the table. You needed to come out
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: of it with a win. And that's exactly what the
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: Clippers did. They got a huge win, a must needed
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: win against the Denver Nuggets in Game number six to
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: get this series tied up at three games a piece.
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: Now.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: In that win for the Clippers, James Harden showed up
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: and showed out twenty eight points and eight assists. After
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: showing up or after not showing up in Game number five,
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: he comes out has a great performance. Kawhi Leonard twenty
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: seven points and the Clippers forced a seventh game of
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: the first round series at a one to eleven one
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: oh five victory over the Denver Nuggets.
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: Now Norma Powell.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: He has been a sneaky big player for the Clippers
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: this season, this entire year. With the Tray Paul or
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: the the exit of Paul George to the seventy six ers,
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: a lot of people wondered who would be that guy
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: to step up for LA. You're losing a lot of
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: regular season production. Norman Palace stepped up in a big
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: way in the regular season and in the playoffs. He
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: rebounded very well twenty four points in last night's winning
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: played excellent defense on Nikolai Yokic, who scored twenty of
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: his twenty five points in the first half, held him
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: to five points in the second half. The Tyrone Louse
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: spoke after the game of what worked against the Nuggets.
- 1:21:30Speaker 12: I thought James did a great job setting the tone early,
- 1:21:34Speaker 12: scoring the basketball, getting downhill, making the right play. Norman
- 1:21:37Speaker 12: makes some big shots at the end, and Kawhile just
- 1:21:40Speaker 12: kind of stayed throughout the game. But I thought those
- 1:21:42Speaker 12: three guys really stepped up came to play. I thought
- 1:21:45Speaker 12: Zoo was a monster on the defensive end. Tonight getting
- 1:21:47Speaker 12: closer to the joker. I'm not giving as much space
- 1:21:50Speaker 12: and man, jokers just it's just hard. You know, if
- 1:21:54Speaker 12: you if you double team home, he's gonna pick your
- 1:21:56Speaker 12: part with his passing. If you stay at home, he's
- 1:21:59Speaker 12: gonna score.
- 1:21:59Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:22:00Speaker 12: So I give my guys credit to staying with it,
- 1:22:02Speaker 12: you know, don't get deflated.
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: And you know, we did a good job just keeping
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: our head.
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: Now we talk a lot about the Giannis conversation about hey,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: the Bucks, they won the championship in twenty twenty one,
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: but since then injuries and coaching and then not being
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: able to get back to that point. Well, the Denver
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Nuggets might be in a similar trajectory. Now listen to this.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: Jamal Murray scored twenty one points last night for the Nuggets.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: It lost a potential series clinching playoff game for the
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: fourth time in five tries over the last two seasons
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: since they won the title in twenty twenty three, four
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: losses in five attempts to close out a series. Denver
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: blew a three to two series lead last year against
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round. This is getting
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: to be a problem, guys. This is getting to be
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: an issue if you're the Denver Nuggets, especially when you
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: consider they fired Mike Malone before the playoffs even started.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: They have an interim head coach sitting on the sideline.
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: You need to come in with some tenacity. You need
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: to come in with some heart, some drive. This is
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: not the type of team that you'd want going up
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: against a gorilla, let alone the LA Clippers.
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: You gotta have some heart, you gotta have some drive.
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: This is what this Denver Nuggets team is lacking. The
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: Nuggets haven't won a game seven since twenty twenty. It's
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: been five years since the Nuggets have won a game seven,
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: winning Alice of the Clippers from the Conference semifinals in
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: the Florida Bubble. Hey remember that, Remember the bubble, Remember COVID.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: This is a problem obviously, the fact that the Nuggets
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: couldn't get the job done last night. I brought this
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: up yesterday to you. I said, you need to be
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: able to win these type of games, because for the Nuggets,
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: this is a team that's a little bit older, not
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: but older experienced, Okay, with a championship under their belt.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: You're going up against the number one seed. If you
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: win this series, you're going up against the Oklahoma State Thunder,
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: a team that won sixty plus games this year, that
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: has the MVP on their squad in SGA. And for Jokic,
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: who down has three MVPs, who is I think universally
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: considered the best player on the planet. What does it
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: say if you can't get out of the first round?
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: What does it say if you can't get out of
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: the first round. Look, I'm not saying that this Nuggets
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: team is built to win a title. When they fired
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: Mike Malone, I said, okay, well there goes the title shots.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: It's out the window. There's no shot of them making
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: anything happen. Now, you can't win a championship with an
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: interim head coach. It's just not done. It's just not done. So, okay,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: you're not gonna win a title, but I need you
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: to have a little bit of life, a little bit
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: of heart, a little bit of drive, and you can't
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: get the job done in Game number six against a
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: Clippers team that Let's be real here, they've got some
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: playoff chokers.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: I like Kawhi Leonard.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Right, this is a guy who won the championship in
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: twenty fourteen for my San Antonio Spurs. He took the
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: Toronto Raptors to the Promised Land in twenty nineteen. He's
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: one of the best playoff performers that we have in
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: the game, So I'm leaving him off the list of
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: playoff chokers. But to balance it out, we have James Harden,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: who sometimes has been known to disappear. He has a
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: very good way of becoming the invisible man come playoff time.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: If James Harden is showing up, if James Harden is
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: the reason you're winning games, if James Harden is getting
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: shoutouts from his head coach Tyler Low in the post
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: game saying, hey, what worked for us tonight was the
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: fact that Harden had twenty eight points. That's a problem.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: And in the final seconds of that game, in the
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: final seconds of or a Nuggets loss to the LA Clippers,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: you know who wasn't on the court, Michael Porter Junior.
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: And this is really where things become concerning to me.
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: If I was a Nuggets fan, if I was somebody
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: who was rooting for the Nuggets, does it concern me
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: that we fired our head coach before the playoffs? Yes,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: this is a concern me that Jokic has multiple MVPs
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: now and only one title to show for. Yes, does
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: it concern me that we didn't have a very good
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: title defense, let alone trying to get back to that
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: point to become a title contending team again. Yes, But
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: Michael Porter Junior is supposed to be your third star
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: in a league that you need to have multiple guys.
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: You can throw out a problem, Hey, I have an
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: issue in the playoffs. I have Anthony Edwards on my team. Hey,
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: I have Rudy Gobert, and I have Julius Randall. I
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: have j McDaniels, I have Nas Reed. Now, granted, none
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: of those guys are super duper stars. None of those
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: guys are lighting up a universe the way that Yo
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: Kicher and Anthony Edwards does.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: But can you light up a room? Can you?
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: Can you bring me a little bit of light? Can
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: you can you give me something in the playoffs? Michael
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: Porter Junior, his struggles in this series are going to
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: be the reason that the Nuggets lose this series. You
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: don't want to point figures. You want to say, this
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: is the reason that these guys are losing games. But
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: Michael Porter Junior not being that secondary Star is going
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: to be a problem. Last night two of five shooting
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: minus twenty four. When he's on the floor with for
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: five points. You can't win games like that. When your
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: third most important player doesn't play defense, You got to
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: pull them off the court in the last couple seconds and.
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: Isn't hitting shots.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: The thing that we're asking you to do is just
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: stand in the corner and make some threes, and you
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: can't even do that. That's a problem. Now, other guys
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: that showed up, Aaron Gorton, he played very well last night.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: Jamal Murray had twenty one points, the Jokic twenty five,
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: eight and seven. That's what I went out of my MVP.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: That's what I went out of my super Duperstar. But
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: the rest of the guys need to show up. And
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: when we talk about Giannis and his ability to maybe
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: get moved off the Bucks and how teams are starting
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: to put packages together to go potentially go trade for him,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: you don't want to break up what Denver has right now.
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: But Jokicic cannot be happy with the way that this
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: team is going out to force a game seven, to
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: be forced into a game seven, it's a problem. And
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: again you got the big bad Oklahoma se thunder who
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: won sixty plus games waiting for you in the second round.
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: So this is a problem. Is something that we got
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: to keep an eye on. Game number seven on Saturday
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: in Denver. All Right, when we come back, big moves
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: in San Antonio. Breaking news out of San Antonio, Greg
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: Popovic moving from the sidelines into the front office to
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: become the president of basketball operations. We'll talk more about
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: it up and next on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: The Zone. Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: I want to make quick.
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: Correction here for Michael Porter junior, who is scheduled to
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: have a shoulder surgery after re injuring that shoulder. I
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: believe so he's out for the remainder of the playoffs.
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: It sounds like and gonna be important for the Nuggets
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: to find a way to fill that hole that a
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: junior Porter junior brings to the table. This is gonna
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: be you hate to say it, in a game number seven.
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: You're gonna need Russell Westbrook to step up. I think
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: which you're really asking. Your higher season is now on
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: the fulcrum of a guy who sometimes will show up
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: and play incredible basketball, and sometimes he makes plays that
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: you're wondering, what were you thinking there? So it might
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: come down to how good Russell Westbrook plays in Game
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: number seven against the Clippers. Now reminder that game Saturday
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: in Denver.
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: All Right.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: News broke earlier today out of San Antonio. One of
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: the longest tenured head coaches in professional basketball history, the
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: winningest head coach in basketball as well, Greg Popovich no
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: longer the head coach of the San Antai Spurs, transitioning
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: to a full time role as the team's president of
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: basketball operations. That was announced earlier today from Popovich in
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: a statement put out by the San Antonio Spurs. Quote,
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: While my love and passion for the game remain, I've
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: decided it's time to step away as head coach. I'm
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: who allowed me to serve them as a Spurs head coach.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: And I'm excited for the opportunity to continue to support
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: the organization, community and city that's meant that are so
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: meaningful to meeting. So the Spurs now with head coach
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: Mitch Johnson, Congratulations, We take the acting part off of
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: the title is now head coach Mitch Johnson. Now Johnson
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: this season in San Antonio thirty one and forty five.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: In Papovich's absence, he spent about a decade as an
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: assistant for the Spurs organization. After a collegiate career at Stanford,
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: he played for the Oklahoma City Thunder's G League affiliate,
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: went to play professional basketball for three years in the
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: G League and then abroad. He joined the Spurs as
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: an assistant coach for the team's Austin G League team
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: back in twenty sixteen. Now, Popovich, it seems probably hand selective,
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: miss Johnson, if you remember when he had the mild
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: stroke in November, Mitch Johnson was given the title of
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: acting head coach and now given the title of head
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: coach of the Santaia Spurs. It carries a ton of weight.
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: This is one of the best jobs in basketball, not
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: only because it's in community in San Antonio and a
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: computer team that has won multiple championships and it was
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: the winningest franchise over the last twenty years. Not only
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: all of that, but you also have the future face
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: of the league in Victor women Yama. You have a
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: Daron Fox Rookie the Year, Stefan Castle, Devin Masel. This
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: team not only is one of the legendary standard bearers
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: of the twenty first century basketball. You couldn't talk NBA basketball,
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: You couldn't talk NBA championships in the two thousands without
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: mentioning the San Antonia Spurs.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: So you were.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: Given the keys to one of the best franchises, and
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: on top of that, you have a treasure chest of
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: picks and assets and you can figure out where you
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: want to go from here. We were comparing it to
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: other organizations other times that this has happened. It happens
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: in basketball a lot more than other sports. You don't
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: have a lot of times where the manager of a
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: baseball team will say, here's the next guy up, here
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: is my hat, I'm giving it to this. You don't
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: get that a ton in football. A lot of football
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: coaches don't get to hand the whistle off to the
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: next guy. Basketball, though, it seems that you're able to
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: kind of pick your successor a little easier. It's a
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: little little easier of a transition. If I'm saying, hey,
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: I'm going from this role of head coach into a
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: front office position, and by the way I'm moving my
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: lead assistant into the spot as well. You have to
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: remember too that Popovich started his career is and for
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: the Spurs, at least in that front office type of role.
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: That he came out of the front office to coach
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: the Spurs, and in that nineteen ninety seven season that
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: they struggled and David Robinson had a back injury and
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: the Spurs end up with a number one overall pick
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: in Tim Duncan, and then boom, you're off to the races.
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: You add on Tony Parker managed nobly, and then a
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: Kawhi Leonard a couple decades later, and then boom, you're
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: a five time champion with Hall of Fame players that
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: you've coached throughout your entire career. So this is a
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: huge move for the Spurs. Obviously, this is a turning
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: of the page as well. You think to yourself, Okay,
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: there's the mild stroke. In November, Papovich was able to
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: rehab get back. There was a lot of signs pointing
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: that the rehabilitation was going very well, and it was
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: had a schedule in a lot of conversations that we
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: heard from behind the scenes, and then there was the
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: medical issue a couple of weeks ago that you saw
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: on TMZ and now we're turning the page completely. And
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: obviously for Spurs fans, this is a very big day,
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: a momentous occasion, and a lot of people were writing
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: the obituary for Greg Popovich's coaching career way too soon.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: Like I was seeing those in early December, people saying, Okay,
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: it's never going to come back, and I said, Okay,
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: let's pump the brakes. Let's wait and see, let's get
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: all the information before we make broad, very broad, very
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: you know, big statements. And now that the day is
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: finally here, we can start making some of those that
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: I think that this is a good place for the
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: Spurs to beat as the next era changes. Right, the
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: Victor Womenyama era of Spurs basketball has officially begun. Okay,
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: this is a guy that if he was able to
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: play enough games this season, he would have been the
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: decisive defensive player of the year if the Spurs had
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: women Yama for the majority of the season, if he
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: didn't miss as many games as he did, They're probably
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: a play in team, let alone, maybe even a playoff
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: team if we're being really generous and then Stefan Castle
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: has a Rookie of the Year campaign that Okay, let's
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: be fair. This rookie class wasn't then, wasn't not the
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: nineteen ninety six rookie class. We'll put it that way,
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: wasn't the three rookie class. Okay, this is a good
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: rookie class. This wasn't an all time great rookie class.
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: But Stefan Castle rose above his peers and was the
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: Rookie of the Year. So now you have a lot
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: of talent on a roster for Mitch Johnson that the
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: expectation in San Antonio is and will continue to be championships.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: It's not fair. It's never fair to have championship or
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: bust mentality. But that is what happens when you win
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: five championships. That's what happens. When you're in the playoff
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: for twenty straight seasons. That's what happens. When you have
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: a guy and Tim Duncan who gets you fifty wins
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: a season, the standard is win a championship. Is it
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: fair to Mitch Johnson year one of him being the
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: head coach for that to be the expectation. Probably not,
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: but that's what it is. Going to be Now turns
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: into how do I get to that point? How do
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: I get the San Antonio Spurs in year one of
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: Mitch Johnson, year three of Victor win mi Yama, in
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: year two of Stefan Castle, and year one of all
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: of these guys being able to play together, the Aaron Foxes,
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: the Chris Pauls, the Harrison Barns of the world, the
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: Cells of the world. Now that I have all you
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: guys together, how am I able to maximize that talent
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: and get you to the next level? And I think
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: back to those coaches who I mentioned previously moved off
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: of their legendary teams, championship winning teams into front office roles.
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: The first one was Red Aurbach. He hands the keys
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: over to Casey Jones. It's a little different because Casey
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: played for Red. But he gives the keys to a
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: guy who says, Okay, now you run my operation. Now
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: you're going to be the day to day head coach.
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: I'm still here. I'm still the puppet master. I'm still
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: the guy who's evaluating draft picks, who are evaluating free agents,
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: who's helping run the organization. But you're going to deal
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: with the on the court in game situations. Casey Jones
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: won championships for the Boston Celtics, so it makes sense. Okay,
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: Miss Johnson did not win championships with the San Antonio Spurs.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: Then you think back to Eric Spoulster in Miami, a
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: guy who works his way up kind of similar to
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: what Miss Johnson did work as the G League team,
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: gets to be the head coach of the Spurs, working
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: in the video room, becoming the head coach of the
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: Miami Heat, pat Riley says, you know what, this is
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: a lot of work. I'm an older man. I've won
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: my titles, I've done my thing. My favorite prints are
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: all over the league. I'm going to move into a
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: front office role. I'm going to have my hand picked
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: successor on the sideline and I'm going to give him
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: all the freedom in the world. And that's the most
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: important thing here is that Mis Johnson has enough freedom
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: to become his own man. Spurs fans, in that thirty
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: minute period between the announcement that Greg Popovich was going
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: to take a front office role and the announcement that
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: miss Johnson was the new head coach of the Spurs,
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: the thirty minute window there I saw more coaching suggestions
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: that I've seen in my entire life. I saw more
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: coaching suggestions for who this next Spurs head coach was
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: going to be that I saw for the Lakers last season,
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: which is saying something, But this is a hand picked successor.
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: You feel very confident in Greg Popovich's ability to pick
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: a guy who's going to help run the team, because
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: you got to give credit where credit is due. He
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: saw in Tim Duncan what everybody else saw. Hey, this
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: is a proven talent. This is the guy who's going
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: to be able to come in and make an impact immediately.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: He saw that in Victor Wemenyama. This is the guy
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: who's able to make an impact immediately on this team.
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: And he knows Papovich knows what went into his decision
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: making when he was building those teams in the late
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: nineties early two thousands, and he's gonna be able to
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: be there and help shape and craft and help shift
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: where this organization goes. But it's up to miss Johnson
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: too to have that, say, to have a seat of
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: the table, to make his voice hurt. And that is
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: where Spurs fans are going to see the real Mitch
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: Johnson and now that's how I'm excited to find out.
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: I'm excited to see who the real guy is because
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: when we take away the acting head coaching title from
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: him and now he's just the head coach of the
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: Spurs now with the expectations and with this team, now
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: we'll find out who the real Mitch Johnson is. And
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: I'm excited to find out. I'm excited to meet him.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: I'm excited to know where this team is gonna go. Look,
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened. It's
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: a new day in Santanio. It's a new day for
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: the Santonio Spurs. I'm excited for what they're able to
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: do down there. All right, we come back. Put on
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: your funny hats. It's Kentucky Derby Weekend as well. You
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: thought we forgot about it. Coming up next Kentucky Derby
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: Talk on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone Sports Radio

- 1:39:20Speaker 1: you missed any of the program, go back and listen
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: to the free iHeartRadio apps podcasts Number one podcast app

- 1:39:35Speaker 1: them a pre set six forty five air time, seven pm,
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: first pitch, Craig Way and Keith Morland on the call.
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: All right, I have my funky hat on. We're ready
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: for it. It's the Kentucky Derby this weekend. It begins,
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: it starts the twenty twenty five competition for horses Triple Crown.
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: Nineteen horses are set to race in the annual Run
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: for the Roses. Now, what's interesting. We go through the horses,
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: and you know, sometimes you're not really interested in who's
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: going to have the best odds, who's going to be
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: You're interested in the names. You're interested in the names. Now,
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: all right, Marcus, we'll start with you. If you had
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: to name a racing horse, Marcus Spears running our ones
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: and twos in Austin, making this sound pretty Marcus, if
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: you had to name a racing horse, what would your
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: horse races name or horse's name be?
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: Oh? Man, uh, I don't know.
- 1:40:34Speaker 6: Take off, I don't I had never even thought about
- 1:40:36Speaker 6: that one, but take off.
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: We've been we've been going back and forth about the
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: the spirit of man to come up with the idea
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: that one hundred of us could take on a gorilla.
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: And this is the spirit of capitalism here. You got
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: to be a multi billionaire to own one of these
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: race horses. These race horses cost millions and millions and
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: millions of dollars. It's hard to believe, but it's true.
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: Millions of dollars goes into these race horses. So it's
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: almost like what would you name your yacht when you
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: come up with what would you name your racehorse? There's
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: some pretty good ones in this year's racing class. Let's
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: go through.
- 1:41:13Speaker 6: So there's just one in particularly I saw already that
- 1:41:16Speaker 6: I like that name.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: Okay, all right, you want to hear this? And bull Yeah, well,
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: I want to go through. Let's actually, you know what,
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: let's go let's hear it. What's your number one in
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: this year's Kentucky Derby off horses races names?
- 1:41:30Speaker 6: Since I have a journalism degree at the University of
- 1:41:35Speaker 6: I'm going to go with journalism.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: Yes, and journalism is a heavy favorite as well. Three
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: to one favorite to win this year's Kentucky Derby. People
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: love this one. People really like the name journalism for
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: the name of the horse, and I like it. I
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: like it a lot. That's not a bad name for
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: a racing horse, because the thing is, you can say
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: journalism for the wind, journalism down the stretch, for the wind,
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: and it feels good right now. What happens though, if
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: something happens to journalists, Oh, journalism fell off, Oh, journalism
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: out of the gates.
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: Slow, Oh, journalism.
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: That's where I get kind of like, oh, you know,
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: it's a good name if it's a winner, not that
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: great name. If we say, coming in fifteenth place, journalism.
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: You know, journalism fails to report. Well, it was supposed
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: to be twenty horses. One horse can canceled, So yeah,
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: one horse did fail to report already, all right. So
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: citizen Bull is another one that I like. Final gambit
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: is one American promise? Is that to anything? Forty Marcus
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: American promise? Feel pretty good about that name. Yeah, that
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: one's a little proud for right though. Then of course
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: we have Birmingham Square Flying Mohawk. I like that one
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: feels pretty good. East Avenue Publisher, which I believe is
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: a sibling of Journalism Rendered Judgment. Yeah, feeling pretty good.
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: Cold battle Sandman. Sand Man enters the race. Okay, feeling
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: pretty good. Sovereignty, chunk of Gold, owing Almighty, not that.
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: Not bad names for some of these horses. Now, I
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: will always feel that American Pharaoh is probably the best
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: racing horses name of the last like twenty years. That
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: was just like a perfect name for a winning horse,
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: American Pharaoh.
- 1:43:21Speaker 2: Do you agree, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's that's a
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: good one, right though.
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: Now the Derby field has been capped to twenty horses
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: since nineteen seventy five. Most of the horses become eligible
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: through the Derby because I know you're wondering, how do
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: you get to be in the Kentucky Derby, So most
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: of these horses are eligible. They earn points in a
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: series of races in the United States starts last September.
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: Journalism your horse Marcus worked his way up the leaderboard
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: in California one at Los Alamos Steaks in December, and
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: then also worn one marches San Felipe State last month. Okay,
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: so we're feeling pretty good now. This is the first
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: leg of the Triple Crown. I had a person come
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: up to me the other day and ask about because again,
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: probably the most famous racing horse of all time is Secretariat,
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: and now we are I think it's like eight generations removed.
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: Maybe it's ten generations. I have to double check that one,
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: but it's where generations removed away from Secretariat winning. And
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: we were talking about because the Kentucky Derby always comes
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: up and it's almost like talking basketball, and you have
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: to start talking about Michael Jordan. That's how what Secretary
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: is to horse racing. You have to mention Secretariat if
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: you're going to talk horse racing, at least at a
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: casual level. And we're going back and forth, and I
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: was talking about Sports Century, which ESPN did at the
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: end of the twentieth century.
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: Marcus, have you remember do you remember this? Do you
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: remember Sports Century?
- 1:44:48Speaker 3: Oh?
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember that show.
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: Okay, So they did the documentary on the biggest Athletes, right,
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: So Magic Johnson got one, Hank Garon got one, Jackie
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: Robinson got one, and they ranked They had a bunch
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: of the ESPN pundits at the time rank their athletes.
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: So of course, you know Ali is in that conversation,
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: Jordan Gretzky and one person put Secretariat in their top
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: ten for athletes of the twentieth century. That should go
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: to tell you how impressive Secretariat is. That they felt
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: that they could put him in the same conversation as
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: the Great One and his airness and the grace of
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: all time, that Secretariat is at that level. But we
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: were going back and forth and we were talking about Secretary,
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: and I said that in the time where horse racing
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: is almost like a sideshow, where racing at one point,
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: horse racing and boxing and baseball were the big three,
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: and now I think it would be hard. I think
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: most people wouldn't know where to watch the Kentucky Derby
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: this weekend if you asked them. In a world now
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: where horse racing has obviously taken a very big backseat,
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: what would somebody like Secretariat do to the sport? Would
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: they be able to bring up and revitalize and breathe
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: a breath of fresh air into the sport of horse racing?
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: I wonder though, because again, Secretary was the biggest thing
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: at one point. Would a horse like that be able
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: to come in in today not only compete but dominate
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: the way that Secretariat did. I don't know, And I'm
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: curious because you think back Okay, show Heyo Tani and baseball.
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: Baseball used to be the national pastime and now it's
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: very much a regional sport. But a guy like Otani
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: shows up who's unique and who is gifted, and who
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: can play both positions pitcher and hit her and do
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: something that nobody else has done since. Again, like Babe Ruth,
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: he's able to breathe life into the sport and make
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: it a national conversation that you can talk to a
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: guy in Atlanta, Georgia, or Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, or you know, Bozeman, Montana,
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: and you know who they're talking about because they're that
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: big of a deal. Would a horse like Secretary be
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: able to do the same thing to horse racing today?
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: I wonder, you know, how big of a star, how
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: big of a story? Would it have to be a
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: horse beating other competitors by multiple, multiple lengths? Would that
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: be enough? Is Secretary a big enough person if you
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: put them back into today's time, would that be enough
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: to make horse racing a big enough sport that you
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: would care about it that the Kentucky Derby comes and goes,
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: and you know, people barely blink unless you know somebody
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: in your life who's degenerate gambler or somebody who's ultra
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: wealthy and is going to Churchill Downs. It doesn't I
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: don't think move the needle for most people. That's that's
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: where we're at right now with horse racing in America.
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: So all right, I thought I could get a response
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: out of the markets. All right, that's fine.
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: Oh I didn't know. No, I was my opinion on it.
- 1:47:56Speaker 6: The problem is with horse racing is they only run
- 1:48:01Speaker 6: for a year. It's like you dominate that one year.
- 1:48:04Speaker 6: It's no follow back. It's like when if you, oh, Tony,
- 1:48:08Speaker 6: we can watch them next year, we can watch them
- 1:48:10Speaker 6: a year after. Uh, you get a great boxer, you
- 1:48:13Speaker 6: can watch you could you get a great boxer knocking
- 1:48:16Speaker 6: people out, you, you're gonna see them year after year.
- 1:48:20Speaker 6: With horse racing, you see one dominant year and then
- 1:48:23Speaker 6: it's like thingos, it's over.
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: I love that, Joe. You want to see a dynastic run.
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: I understand that. I can get behind that. I can
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: understand wanting to see a horse run year after year
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: after year. All right, well, Kentucky journey. Yeah, let's hear
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: it now.
- 1:48:42Speaker 6: If you continuously have a horse dominate year after year
- 1:48:46Speaker 6: like another horse dominate the next year, then you start
- 1:48:49Speaker 6: to draw some interest. But then again, if that happens
- 1:48:53Speaker 6: too long, then you don't lose that interest. But you
- 1:48:56Speaker 6: might need to have a run of triple crown winners
- 1:48:59Speaker 6: and some dominic triple crown win us to draw ad attention.
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: We will see can horse racing be saved? We'll figure
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: it out. Next next show, All right, Kentucky Derby this
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: weekend Saturday, NBC. You can also stream it on Peacock

- 1:49:42Speaker 1: on The Craigway Show. Craig will be back in the
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: Big chair on Monday. Tonight. Texas Baseball plays Arkansas seven pm,
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: First pitch, six forty five air time on Sports or
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: on a Austin's ay station one O three one FM.
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: You can listen to it on the free iHeartRadio app
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: as well. All right, we were talking about Secretary in
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: the last segment, and I found this incredible stat for
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: you here. It is, more than fifty years after Secretariat's
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: record breaking performance in the nineteen seventy three Kentucky Derby,
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: his bloodline is still featured prominently in American horse racing.
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: In fact, each horse in this year's Kentucky Derby has
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: Secretariat pedigree. Can you believe that of the twenty horses
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: that are qualified for the Kentucky Derby this weekend at
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, all twenty are related to Secretary. Now,
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: that doesn't mean that they're all direct descendants of Secretary.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: That's not saying that all of these are clones genetic clubs. No,
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: they're all cousins. Because of the way that horse racing works.
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: When you are a champion like Secretariat was in nineteen
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: seventy three, you go to a little bit of a
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: breeding farm and you get a lot of money for
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: your horse. By the way, when you do that, but
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: all twenty of the horses that qualified for the Derby
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: this year.
- 1:51:04Speaker 2: Are all cousins. Isn't that interesting? Find that interesting, Marcus, that.
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: They all talk about Secretary, all of them are related.
- 1:51:13Speaker 6: It's kind of funny because it's like when Secretary was
- 1:51:15Speaker 6: hanging out growing up. It's like his homeboy was able
- 1:51:19Speaker 6: to get a little piece because of what Secretarist.
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: Did exactly exactly.
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: It's truly remarkable horse racing something that more people need
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: to be paying attention to.
- 1:51:31Speaker 3: I think.
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: All right, So Texas baseball tonight. They lose yesterday nine
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: zero shut out for the first time this season against
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: an Arkansas team that is still vying for a spot
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: in the top five in the SEC Baseball standings. This
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: is a very good ball club in Arkansas. Craig Way
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: will be on the call. He talked to us a
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: little bit earlier in the program. If you missed, you
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: can go back and listen to the podcast. But he
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: was giving a lot of love to Zach Route, who
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: pitched marvelously last night, allowing only two hit and two
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: walks and eight innings of work. And the Longhorns this
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: season when they face off against a pitcher like that,
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: when you're talking about a guy who's probably top three
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: to five in the SEC and probably top fifteen across
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: college baseball. You're gonna have trouble with that. But the
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: real thing that's gonna come down to this series is
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: when a team like Arkansas can throw out that first picture,
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: what are you able to do with pitchers two and three?
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: Because when you play in a tournament like the SEC
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: tournament or in Omaha, you're not going to see every
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: team's best player, our best pitcher, I should say, you're
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: going to see the best picture maybe once you hope
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: that that is a position that you rise to the
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: occasion of and rise to the occasion of playing them
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: and knock him off the hill early, hopefully. But you
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: only see that guy once in a series. You're not
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: gonna be able to see him again. He's not gonna
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: pop up his head up in a game later down
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: the road.
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: For you.
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: You're gonna see him once and do what you need
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: to do to get past him in that spot, and
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: then you see where you can go from there. How
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: long how Texas plays tonight and Saturday is going to
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: give a real uh. I don't want to call it
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: a test because you're testing every single game in the SEC,
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: but it is a good benchmark, I think, a good
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: high water mark for where this team is. Right, you
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: can kind of do a little bit of experimentation, you
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: can kind of see where we are as a program.
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: Because while every team deals with injuries, and you don't
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: want to make that excuse. You don't want to say like, well,
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: we were injured. Oh, you don't want to make that
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: a talking point when it comes to teams rises and
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: falls during the season, because everybody deals with them. Texas
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: is uniquely positioned because they lose their starter and spencer
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: for the season with his shoulder injury, and then you
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: lose Max Blue for six weeks with a thumb injury.
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: Now according to Krag and according to reports, he will
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: be back hopefully by the SEC Tournament, maybe a little
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: bit later. But you would like to not deal with that.
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: And if you're gonna deal with it, if you're gonna
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: take your lumps, let's take them now a couple of
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: weeks prior to the SEC Tournament, then during the SEC
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: tournament or later down the road, like let's figure out
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: what this team is.
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: Let's lock in.
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: And again I agree with Craig when he says we
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: need to see Longhorns step up in a big way
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: in the series against Arkansas. Start getting your confidence going. Hey,
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: I know that Max Blue was the big bopper. I
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: know he was a guy that was hitting the long
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: ball for the majority of the season. But he's not
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: coming through those doors. Who's gonna step up? Who's gonna
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: show up? Flores has been the guy that has kind
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: of been pegged as hey, he needs to be the
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: guy who steps up in this series against Arkansas and
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: then against Florida and Oklahoma and the two following SEC
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: series the next two weekends. But Longhorns Tonight six forty
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: five airtimes seven pm, first pitch one oh three one.
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: That is where you're going to want to listen and
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: find out because today's a pivotal day. It's game two
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: of a three game series. You're gonna find out where
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: the series is gonna go after tonight's matchup. So all right,
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: that will do it for The Craigway Show this Friday,
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: the Friday edition of The Craigway Show. I'm glad that
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: you guys were able to hang out with us. I'm
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: glad that you spend a little bit of time with us.
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: Game tonight, game tomorrow. Don't want to miss either one
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: of those. And I gotta give it a big shout
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: out to Texas softball battle back against Kentucky Day got
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: a good win against the Wildcats. Back to back wins.
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: They're getting back in their mojo. They're feeling pretty good, Marcus.
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: Any big weekend plans.
- 1:55:30Speaker 6: Uh, watch some basketball, watch some Probably gonna watch a
- 1:55:35Speaker 6: fight this weekend, Canelo Alvarez fight.
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: I think this.
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: Weekend all right? We love to see its fiesta in
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: San Antonio. Hopefully the weather holds up for me down
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: here and I can I can do some stuff Until
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: next time. Kids, I'm Andrew ZIMML. Don't forget. I'm not wrong.
