- 0:00All right, back on the road. Uh, I think
- 0:02it's our third and four on the road. Um,
- 0:06you know, obviously playing at a really
- 0:09tough spot. Um, you know, Tennessee is
- 0:11obviously really good at home. Um, you
- 0:13know, really good in general this year.
- 0:15I think they've only lost one at home.
- 0:17Um, coming off two huge wins, um, both
- 0:21on the road at Alabama and at Georgia.
- 0:25um you know had a lot of step up in
- 0:27those games and you know kind of similar
- 0:28to us last week when you know we won two
- 0:32on the road you know kind of changed the
- 0:33trajectory of of their season and you
- 0:35know um they've physically just kind of
- 0:38went in there and punked both teams um
- 0:40and that's what they're really capable
- 0:41of doing have some really good pieces
- 0:44you know Jacobe Gillespie and Native
- 0:45Mint are an absolute handful um you know
- 0:48they're combining for you know half
- 0:50their points essentially uh in
- 0:52conference so far this
- 0:54uh both, you know, bring different
- 0:56dimensions to what they do and uh you
- 0:58know, we're going to have our hands full
- 0:59trying to guard those guys and then they
- 1:01got a bunch of guys that just know what
- 1:03they're supposed to do and uh you know,
- 1:05they do a great job at it. So, best
- 1:08offensive rebounding team in college
- 1:09basketball. Um you know, in their SEC
- 1:12wins, they're averaging 20 offensive
- 1:14rebounds per game, which is nuts. Um,
- 1:18so, you know, we're uh while Florida was
- 1:22a battle, uh, this one's, you know,
- 1:24going to be that and some as far as
- 1:26trying to keep these guys off the
- 1:27offensive glass. Um, uh, so, you know,
- 1:30and then, you know, historically we've
- 1:32had a hard time scoring on Tennessee,
- 1:33you know, told our guys if you want to
- 1:35do something that last year's team
- 1:36couldn't do, and that'd be like score
- 1:38more than 50 points on Tennessee because
- 1:40we just we couldn't do that last year.
- 1:41Um, so Coach Barnes has done an
- 1:44unbelievable job. Um, you know, with
- 1:48everything that they've accomplished and
- 1:49all the success that they've had, they
- 1:51play with a different level of toughness
- 1:52and physicality and grit and, uh, you
- 1:55know, it served them well. So, another
- 1:57phenomenal opportunity for our guys, um,
- 2:00you know, to
- 2:02try and beat one of the best programs,
- 2:05uh, in our league over the last, you
- 2:06know, 10, 11 years. So, take any
- 2:08questions,
- 2:08>> Justin?
- 2:11Steve, you talked about, I think, a
- 2:13couple of times after Florida and after
- 2:14this last game where you're not sure if
- 2:16this team would have won that game two
- 2:17weeks ago, three weeks ago. Do you
- 2:19attribute that to the middle on the
- 2:22court, a mental thing, maybe just a
- 2:24belief in what they're doing and then
- 2:26could you go back three weeks and see it
- 2:28coming? Like were there small things you
- 2:29think back and go, there's a thing I saw
- 2:31or a thing that happened that now
- 2:33looking back I can connect to what
- 2:35they're doing now? I think we've just
- 2:38been really consistent in our routine as
- 2:40far as what we've been doing after every
- 2:42game as far as learning um from our
- 2:46mistakes and learning from the good
- 2:49things that we did and all that means
- 2:51nothing if you don't apply it to the
- 2:52next game. I think our guys have done a
- 2:54good job of applying it to the next game
- 2:55for the most part. Um, you know, after
- 2:59we started 0 and2, um, you I kind of I
- 3:02was we were one and three and I was
- 3:04like, we're getting better and no one
- 3:06wanted to hear that and, you know,
- 3:07everybody thought I was crazy for saying
- 3:08it, but like, you know, I saw what
- 3:11practice was like every day. We had
- 3:12great energy in practice and and the
- 3:14guys were just, you know, locked in. Um,
- 3:17and uh, you know, just stayed consistent
- 3:19with our film prepared in film, our
- 3:22preparation in the scouts. and uh
- 3:24ultimately it's led you know to four
- 3:26straight and five out of our last six.
- 3:28So I just think more than anything
- 3:30through ups and through downs we've been
- 3:32consistent in conference play in
- 3:34everything that we've done and we got to
- 3:36continue to do so if we want to, you
- 3:37know, keep trying to get better.
- 3:40>> You mentioned the rebounding,
- 3:41[clears throat]
- 3:41but is this another one where you kind
- 3:43of go in like the Florida game and be
- 3:45like, "All right, if you don't check out
- 3:46on every possession, they're just going
- 3:48to throw it off the backboard against
- 3:49y'all."
- 3:49>> Yeah. Um, if if winning is important to
- 3:52you and that's what you that's what
- 3:55matters, then you'll check out every
- 3:56possession. If you don't, they're going
- 3:58to make you look stupid. You know, they
- 3:59had 26 offensive rebounds at Georgia.
- 4:02Um, made them I mean, if Georgia gets
- 4:05one, if they get one less offensive
- 4:07rebound, Georgia probably wins the game.
- 4:10It's not just offensive rebounds, you
- 4:12know, in their in their SEC wins, 20
- 4:15offensive rebounds and they're scoring
- 4:16like 18 second chance points off those.
- 4:18So, it's like it's it's turning into
- 4:20points. So, you know, if Georgia could
- 4:23have just held them to one less, they
- 4:24probably win that game. So, it's a
- 4:26really important part of the game. Um,
- 4:28and they do such a good job of just
- 4:30physically crashing every single
- 4:32possession. And, um, you know, they have
- 4:35multiple bigs that can just kind of come
- 4:36in droves and be effective. They had two
- 4:39guys that had seven offensive rebounds
- 4:40in the last game. Just nuts. So, um,
- 4:44yeah, if winning is important to our
- 4:45guys, you know, we'll physically check
- 4:47out every possession. If it's not, then,
- 4:50you know, we'll look silly.
- 4:53>> Ted's got here in the notes, you guys
- 4:55are 55% from the floor in the second
- 4:57half in your wins this season. I know
- 4:59you talked about, you know, Berggo and
- 5:01how good of a job he did in that Texas
- 5:02game, but just how nice has it been this
- 5:04season to not only have somebody that
- 5:06you trust so much to to make adjustments
- 5:08offensively, but somebody that you're
- 5:10very familiar with in terms of you all
- 5:12coaching together?
- 5:13Yeah, I mean it's uh it's one testament
- 5:17to Mike and you know making adjustments
- 5:19at halftime, but two it's you know I
- 5:20think our guys have done a good job of
- 5:22understanding that early in games teams
- 5:24are fresh and teams are going to guard
- 5:26you a little bit differently than they
- 5:27will in the latter 20 minutes and as
- 5:29long as we stay as long as we trust what
- 5:32our game plan is and just continue to do
- 5:34those things like ultimately teams will
- 5:35break down and when teams get tired what
- 5:37do they do? They foul and that's what's
- 5:40kind of happened in the second half of
- 5:41games this year. Um, so you know, Mike's
- 5:44done a great job making adjustments and
- 5:46our guys have done a great job of just
- 5:47being locked into the things that we
- 5:49need to continue to do um, in order to
- 5:51to attack what they do. Tennessee
- 5:54historically has been one of the best
- 5:55defenses in college basketball every
- 5:57single year and they've given us a ton
- 5:58of fits on the offensive end and we've
- 6:00struggled to manufacture points. So,
- 6:03it's going to be another challenge, you
- 6:05know, um, uh, tomorrow, you know, in
- 6:08Knoxville because they do such a great
- 6:09job of one plugging gaps, making you
- 6:12pass the ball. And, uh, you know, we
- 6:14have a team that has, we have a bunch of
- 6:16guy, not a bunch of guys, we have guys
- 6:17that can go get their own. You know, we
- 6:19got to do a really good job in this game
- 6:21of being willing to share the basketball
- 6:22and get off it once we draw multiple
- 6:24defenders because that's what they're
- 6:26going to do. and they just make multiple
- 6:27efforts and they um fly around and um
- 6:30you know it's going to require guys to
- 6:32knock down shots and uh you know we just
- 6:34got to stay consistent with the things
- 6:35that we've been doing.
- 6:38>> Coach, knowing your player history with
- 6:39the University of Tennessee, how
- 6:40emotional will it be, you know,
- 6:42returning back to Knoxville this time as
- 6:43a head coach?
- 6:45>> Yeah, I mean I don't want to make it
- 6:46about me. Um you know, I've been there
- 6:49before as an assistant, so I don't think
- 6:51the emotions will be much different. you
- 6:53[clears throat] know, um, played five
- 6:55years there and gave, you know, all my
- 6:58blood, sweat, and tears to that
- 6:59university and had a lot of great times
- 7:02and won a lot of games and, you know,
- 7:05everything's connected. You know, I
- 7:07don't meet my wife if it wasn't for the
- 7:08University of Tennessee because I went
- 7:10to Nashville to visit a former teammate,
- 7:12Jordan Hal, and a buddy of mine, Bubba
- 7:16South, whose parents might be sitting
- 7:18right next to our bench actually on
- 7:19Saturday, which would be cool. um he was
- 7:22the one that was working out at
- 7:24Britney's gym and he was like, "You need
- 7:25to come meet this girl." So like if I
- 7:28didn't play basketball at Tennessee, I
- 7:29don't meet my wife, I don't have my
- 7:31daughter, you know, it's all it's all
- 7:33connected. So like, you know, from that
- 7:35standpoint, you know, and half half my
- 7:37groomsman I went to Tennessee with like
- 7:40that was that that was the best thing
- 7:42that ever happened to me was being, you
- 7:44know, in Knoxville. And then if they
- 7:46hadn't fired our asses, like we wouldn't
- 7:48be here. So like best thing that's ever
- 7:50happened to me is being in Auburn too.
- 7:52So it's like I can't I mean I can't
- 7:54thank him enough for everything that
- 7:55happened in Knoxville. Best f best years
- 7:57of my life, you know? Did medical sales
- 7:59for three and a half years. I learned
- 8:02from one of the greatest sales reps in
- 8:04medical sales history, Ron Barzac. I
- 8:05know I'm giving you a lot of names you
- 8:06don't give a about, but like that
- 8:10all correlated to me understanding how
- 8:12to recruit sales and like so you you
- 8:14know what I mean? There's so many things
- 8:16that happened at Tennessee that have,
- 8:19you know, shaped my life to what it is
- 8:21today. So, I'm I'm eternally grateful. I
- 8:24would like a letterman's jacket at some
- 8:25point cuz I still haven't gotten that.
- 8:27But, like, my years there, like, you
- 8:30know, were some of the best of my life
- 8:32personally because it shaped the man I
- 8:33am today. And, you know, a lot of things
- 8:36kind of fell in place for me to, you
- 8:37know, be where I'm at in this year.
- 8:42I was going to ask about Nate for them.
- 8:44Seems like really in SEC play he's
- 8:46starting to kind of get going, you know,
- 8:48even more. What have you seen out
- 8:49[clears throat] of him? Just the
- 8:50challenge he faced. He's really
- 8:51talented, but also really large as well.
- 8:54>> You know, Coach Barnes and his staff
- 8:56have done such a good job with him. Um,
- 8:58you know, early in the year when you
- 8:59watched him, he was upright and he
- 9:01didn't really get in a stance and play
- 9:03physically offensively and people were
- 9:04kind of knocking him off his spot. And
- 9:06as the years gone on, you can just kind
- 9:08of see his progression of being way more
- 9:10aggressive and way more physical in what
- 9:12he does. And there was no better game to
- 9:14look at than the Alabama game. He was a
- 9:16monster in that game. And he's just
- 9:19gotten way more confident and way more
- 9:21aggressive in what he's doing
- 9:22offensively. And that's a testament to
- 9:24to coach and his staff just continuing
- 9:26to work with him every single day. And,
- 9:28you know, um they're going to have that
- 9:30kid ready for, you know, the NBA draft
- 9:32come June. And uh you know, he's going
- 9:34to be a handful. So, um, you know, we we
- 9:36got to do a great job of just trying to
- 9:38be physical with him and not let him get
- 9:41to his spots on the floor cuz when he
- 9:42does, like, you know, he's legit 610,
- 9:44611. He's going to shoot right over the
- 9:46top of you. So, you know, they're like,
- 9:48if you were going to compare him to
- 9:49somebody, you know, he's not as good of
- 9:51a shooter as Jabari, but like he's got
- 9:52some of like a lot of that in his game,
- 9:54you know what I mean? And um that's what
- 9:57makes him, you know, such a tough
- 9:58matchup because if you put a guard on
- 10:00him, he's going to post up, shoot the
- 10:01top of you. If you put a big on him,
- 10:02he's able to, you know, drive around
- 10:04you. So, he's a great player and uh you
- 10:06know, I know our guys are excited about
- 10:08the matchup.
- 10:09>> Yeah,
- 10:09>> that was my question as well. Just I
- 10:11didn't know if he gave you any Jabari
- 10:13vibes and asked an answer.
- 10:15>> Yeah. No, I mean he's he's he's a super
- 10:17talented player. Doesn't doesn't shoot
- 10:19the same volume of threes that Jabari
- 10:20did. Um but you know that his mid-range,
- 10:24you know, turnaround jump shot that
- 10:26Jabari had was so good. Um he he has
- 10:29that. So, um, you know, special player
- 10:33and, uh, you know, big- time talent.
- 10:36>> Stephen, you talked earlier in this just
- 10:37today about getting in the gaps. I've
- 10:39heard you say that. I heard a lot of
- 10:40other coaches say that. It's a new
- 10:41phrase to me. Is it a new paradigm like
- 10:44defensively to get in gaps? Patino used
- 10:46to talk about got to get deflections. Is
- 10:48it the same concept basically?
- 10:49>> Yeah. I mean, part of being in gaps is,
- 10:51you know, deflections is more stuff like
- 10:53on the ball, but, you know, being in
- 10:55gaps is more just about offering, you
- 10:58know, help to the guy that's on the
- 10:59ball. Um, Tennessee does such a great
- 11:02job of assisting the basketball that
- 11:04that might, you know, that could be a a
- 11:06challenge because anytime teams are in
- 11:08gaps, they do a great job of getting off
- 11:09it to the next guy and they make shots.
- 11:11So, um, but what we've been doing as far
- 11:14as loading the ball since we don't have
- 11:16great rim protection has been really, I
- 11:17mean, it's been the reason why we've won
- 11:18five out of the last six because we've
- 11:20just really offered help, loads the ball
- 11:22and and made teams settle for for
- 11:23contested threes and uh, you know, while
- 11:26teams are shooting a good percentage
- 11:27against us from three. Um, you know, you
- 11:30got to kind of trust what it does over a
- 11:3340-minute game. And um you know it
- 11:36burned us at Missouri uh cuz they made
- 11:38seven in the first half, but I think for
- 11:40the most part it's it's been really good
- 11:41and it's given our guys more confidence
- 11:43guarding the ball. They know there's
- 11:44somebody to their right and to their
- 11:45left just in case their guy does drive
- 11:47by. And um so it's something that this
- 11:49team that it's been the identity of this
- 11:51team and it's one one that we got to
- 11:52continue to build on.
- 11:55>> Then I was I was ask for them. He never
- 11:58comes off the floor and he's been really
- 11:59shooting well at [clears throat] home
- 12:00especially this year. How big is he and
- 12:02know what kind of challenges he bring? I
- 12:04mean, he leads them in points, he leads
- 12:06them in assists, he leads them in
- 12:08steals. Um, you he does everything for
- 12:11them. Um, you know, they're probably
- 12:13their he's their best volume three-point
- 12:15shooter. Uh, he's got a lot of, you
- 12:19know, he's really shifty with his
- 12:21handle, can go either direction. Um,
- 12:23does a great job of setting the table
- 12:25for the rest of those guys, getting
- 12:26other guys involved. So, you know, one
- 12:28of the best guards in our league. Um,
- 12:30but you're right, he's going to play the
- 12:31entire game. So, you know, our guys have
- 12:33to do a great job of defending him
- 12:35without fouling and, you know, try and
- 12:37wear him out with uh the things that
- 12:39we're doing defensively and, you know,
- 12:40you got to make him cover a little bit,
- 12:41but, you know, he's just another guard
- 12:44that Rick's brought in that's just
- 12:45seamlessly fit into that role and, you
- 12:47know, he's done a great job for him. So,
- 12:49um, really good player and, uh, you
- 12:52know, just has such a big impact on on
- 12:54what they do as a whole.
- 12:56You guys compared Sway a couple times in
- 12:59the summer kind of having the skill set
- 13:00of Isaac Aoro and there were a couple
- 13:02possessions in the Texas game where you
- 13:04could really almost felt like you were
- 13:06watching Isaac there. How much of a of a
- 13:07boost is it for you as a defensive
- 13:09minded coach to have a guy developing
- 13:11like that that you can sort of deploy in
- 13:13a lot of different ways?
- 13:14>> It's great because you can get in film
- 13:16and just like watch 30 seconds of
- 13:18Sebastian guarding um Jordan Pope
- 13:21one-on-one and be like that's what it
- 13:23looks like. So if you guys want to play
- 13:26in the NBA like he is one day guard like
- 13:28him. Um you know so it it it makes
- 13:32everyone be more accountable for their
- 13:34one-on-one defense. He covers up so many
- 13:36mistakes you know just because he makes
- 13:38multiple efforts. Um and he's just a
- 13:40willing learner. You know while he made
- 13:41some mistakes as well like he's the
- 13:43first one to try and figure out what
- 13:45he's got to correct and how to be better
- 13:46at it. So he just you know it a lot of
- 13:49his impact doesn't show up in a box
- 13:51score. Um, but man, as as a freshman,
- 13:54like him and Isaac are two of the most
- 13:55impactful freshman that, you know, we've
- 13:57ever had. And, uh, you know, he's the
- 13:59difference between winning and losing.
- 14:01So, um, he's been great. And, uh, you
- 14:04know, I just know he'll continue to
- 14:05improve as the year goes on.
