- 1:17Speaker 1: here is the Big in Laws.
- 1:28Speaker 2: The story you were about to hear is true, only
- 1:31Speaker 2: the names have been changed to protect the innocent. You're
- 1:42Speaker 2: a detective sergeant here assigned a robbery detail. A gang
- 1:46Speaker 2: of hijackers is set up operations in your city. Truckloads
- 1:50Speaker 2: of merchandise worth thousands of dollars vanished completely. The criminals
- 1:54Speaker 2: know their business, their system appears foolproof.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Your job stop them.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Drag met the documented drama of an actual crime. Well,
- 2:13Speaker 4: the next thirty minutes in cooperation of the Los Angeles
- 2:16Speaker 4: Police Department. You will travel step by step on the
- 2:19Speaker 4: side of the law through an actual case transcribed from
- 2:21Speaker 4: official police by us. From beginning to end, and from
- 2:25Speaker 4: crime to punishment. Drag Net is the story of your
- 2:28Speaker 4: police force in action.
- 2:33Speaker 5: It was Saturday, November eight, was foggy in Los Angeles.
- 2:36Speaker 5: We're working the day watch out of robbery detail. My
- 2:39Speaker 5: partner's Ben Romero. The boss's captain Didion. My name is Friday.
- 2:42Speaker 6: I was on the way back from R and I and.
- 2:44Speaker 5: It was eleven twenty three am when I got THROUGHOM
- 2:46Speaker 5: twenty seven eight robbery detail.
- 2:49Speaker 7: Joe, Hi, where you've been anyhow? I've been sitting here
- 2:52Speaker 7: twenty minutes waiting for you.
- 2:53Speaker 6: I'm sorry.
- 2:54Speaker 5: I've been checking a couple of names through and I
- 2:55Speaker 5: took a little longer, and I figured.
- 2:56Speaker 6: At least you could do is leave a note in
- 2:57Speaker 6: the book. I do the same for you. I've been
- 2:59Speaker 6: sitting here, George. I'm sorry. What's the matter? You feeling well? No,
- 3:02Speaker 6: I'm alright. It just like a little cooperation, Joetso what's
- 3:06Speaker 6: the matter with you? Oh? I don't know.
- 3:08Speaker 7: I guess I was mad when I woke up at
- 3:10Speaker 7: a crazy house. What's the trouble? You have an argue with
- 3:12Speaker 7: your wife in laws? They're visioning again? Sex of them?
- 3:14Speaker 6: Or were they sleeping all over the place?
- 3:16Speaker 7: For adults? Two kids in a great Fox terrier. He's
- 3:19Speaker 7: not even house broken. How long are you gonna stay?
- 3:21Speaker 7: A couple of days?
- 3:22Speaker 6: Two weeks? I don't know how I can last about Joe.
- 3:24Speaker 7: They're crawling all over the place, kids, gleaming dog caring
- 3:26Speaker 7: up the front room.
- 3:27Speaker 6: No privacy.
- 3:28Speaker 5: I don't know what I'm gonna do. Well, why don't
- 3:29Speaker 5: you just level with him? Ask him they wouldn't mind
- 3:31Speaker 5: standing at a motel for a couple of days. I
- 3:32Speaker 5: suggested that to the wife this morning. What do you
- 3:34Speaker 5: think that's when the argument's started? Hey, I almost forgot
- 3:38Speaker 5: to tell you that.
- 3:38Speaker 7: Truck driver finally showed up at uh Frank Burns.
- 3:41Speaker 6: Oh yeah, it's about time. Where is?
- 3:42Speaker 7: He took him across the hall of the mug room,
- 3:44Speaker 7: got him checking out some coming out mug books.
- 3:46Speaker 6: I guess we better see how he's doing all right?
- 3:50Speaker 7: He sure took his time to get away, didn't He
- 3:52Speaker 7: didn't offer any excuses. He's no more help than he
- 3:54Speaker 7: was yesterday, surly not very cooperating.
- 4:00Speaker 6: How you doing, mister Burros?
- 4:02Speaker 7: You'n't limber my partner story of Friday. I got a headache.
- 4:07Speaker 7: This is just a waste of time waiting through all
- 4:09Speaker 7: these pictures. I've been through two of these books already.
- 4:11Speaker 7: I couldn't identify any of the guys.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Yeah, we know it's pretty tedious. We'd just like to
- 4:15Speaker 5: have you check through a few more volumes if you
- 4:16Speaker 5: wouldn't mind. Look, I don't mind giving you a hand
- 4:18Speaker 5: when I got time, but I got things.
- 4:20Speaker 6: To do today. I got some on for the night,
- 4:22Speaker 6: have to get a haircut, my suit pressed. Well, this
- 4:25Speaker 6: thing's pretty important to us. Burroughs. I know we're putting
- 4:27Speaker 6: you out, but we need every lead we can get.
- 4:28Speaker 5: We'd certainly appreciate it if you could just give us
- 4:30Speaker 5: a little more cooperation.
- 4:31Speaker 7: I don't know what else I can do. I told
- 4:33Speaker 7: you everything, I know, just what happened. A few more
- 4:35Speaker 7: things we'd like to ask you about. Is there some
- 4:37Speaker 7: of the details you didn't make quite clear?
- 4:39Speaker 6: What details? How do you mean details about the hijacking?
- 4:42Speaker 6: Mind going over with the gain voice?
- 4:44Speaker 7: Well later it out for you. The last time he
- 4:45Speaker 7: talked to me just the way it went. It's the
- 4:47Speaker 7: same as the rest. Well, how do you mean the
- 4:49Speaker 7: same as the rest?
- 4:50Speaker 6: Well, the other hijackings are the same as though it
- 4:52Speaker 6: was no different. You're pretty familiar with the other jobs,
- 4:54Speaker 6: aren't well?
- 4:54Speaker 7: Follow them in the paper or the bullet and the
- 4:56Speaker 7: cops got out on him. It's up on the dispatch
- 4:58Speaker 7: board in the garage. Is that fresh water?
- 5:01Speaker 6: And I coud over there? Yeah? I think so happens
- 5:03Speaker 6: to night. I have a pup last one for his headache.
- 5:07Speaker 6: Can't take asphin it's not water. You know you've been
- 5:16Speaker 6: driving a couple of years for Lavell Trucking Line. Is
- 5:18Speaker 6: that right, bros?
- 5:19Speaker 8: That's right?
- 5:20Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 5:21Speaker 5: What if you'd mind running it through for us again? Bro,
- 5:23Speaker 5: Maybe there's a few details about the thing that you
- 5:25Speaker 5: forgot to mention.
- 5:26Speaker 7: It won't be any different. And last time I pulled
- 5:28Speaker 7: out from the load and dock about six o'clock yesterday
- 5:31Speaker 7: morning hauling a load of Scotch whiskey over to Phoenix,
- 5:33Speaker 7: pulled up for the red lighted Alameda and Jackson. That's
- 5:36Speaker 7: when the guy pulled open the door and got in
- 5:37Speaker 7: next to me, put a gun in my ribs told
- 5:39Speaker 7: me look straight ahead. The first thing he did was
- 5:41Speaker 7: hand me the pair of goggles and tell me to
- 5:42Speaker 7: put him on same kind of the welders use. Front
- 5:45Speaker 7: of the lens was covered with the tape. I put
- 5:47Speaker 7: him on.
- 5:47Speaker 6: I couldn't see a thing. Guy took over the wheel
- 5:49Speaker 6: and started driving. Well, does you have any idea what
- 5:51Speaker 6: direction you were heading in? Not with the goggles on.
- 5:53Speaker 7: I tried to follow it first, but I got all
- 5:55Speaker 7: mixed up, couldn't tell where he was driving, made quite
- 5:57Speaker 7: a few turns. He drove about twenty twenty five minutes,
- 5:59Speaker 7: I guess before we pulled up that's where the switching
- 6:02Speaker 7: point was. Two more guys met us there. I could
- 6:04Speaker 7: only tell by the voices. They put me out of
- 6:06Speaker 7: the truck and put me in a car.
- 6:07Speaker 5: Well, can you tell us anything at all about that
- 6:09Speaker 5: transfer point? I mean, were there any sounds or anything
- 6:12Speaker 5: like that that give you an idea that maybe.
- 6:13Speaker 6: Where you were?
- 6:14Speaker 7: Well, I figure it must have been someplace out in
- 6:16Speaker 7: the valley, pretty far out, no traffic sounds at all,
- 6:19Speaker 7: just cricket scene and things like that. You got me
- 6:21Speaker 7: in that car, drove around about an hour, I figure,
- 6:24Speaker 7: and they put me on out side of the road,
- 6:26Speaker 7: told me to leave the goggles on for ten minutes,
- 6:28Speaker 7: and then they drove off.
- 6:28Speaker 5: Well, how about those two men at the transfer point?
- 6:31Speaker 5: If you heard their voices again, you think you could
- 6:32Speaker 5: recognize them.
- 6:33Speaker 6: I don't No, I dit it. I didn't say too much,
- 6:35Speaker 6: not that I heard anyway.
- 6:36Speaker 7: I'm just curious, Bruhs, how is it you thought of
- 6:38Speaker 7: calling your company first instead of the police. Well, it's
- 6:40Speaker 7: their cargo, hold old a whiskey. If somebody hijacked that,
- 6:43Speaker 7: I figured the company ought to be the first to know.
- 6:45Speaker 5: I like to ask you just one more question. There's
- 6:47Speaker 5: no offense intended here. Yeah, have you ever been arrested?
- 6:51Speaker 2: Why?
- 6:51Speaker 6: What'd that have to do with? Probably nothing at all.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Have you ever been arrested?
- 6:54Speaker 7: I'd like to set you straight on it right now.
- 6:56Speaker 7: If you think I was working inside on this thing,
- 6:58Speaker 7: you got it wrong. I didn't have anything to do
- 6:59Speaker 7: with it, and there's nothing to worry about it, all right. Yeah,
- 7:03Speaker 7: I've been arrested that Burroughs about ten years ago. It
- 7:05Speaker 7: was back east West Virginia. What was the chart hijacking?
- 7:10Speaker 5: Our records showed no previous arrests for Frank Burrows for
- 7:13Speaker 5: the next few days.
- 7:14Speaker 6: He was kept under observation.
- 7:16Speaker 5: When we got the kickback from Washington, it showed Burrows
- 7:19Speaker 5: had one previous arrest, the one he told us about,
- 7:21Speaker 5: for hijacking. We checked all his friends, relatives and associates.
- 7:25Speaker 5: We found nothing suspicious. His employers said that they were
- 7:28Speaker 5: aware of his police record, but they told us that
- 7:30Speaker 5: Burrows was one of the best drivers they had. There
- 7:33Speaker 5: was nothing to link him with a series of hijackings
- 7:35Speaker 5: which had been going on all over the city for
- 7:37Speaker 5: the past month.
- 7:39Speaker 6: Our crime lab checked the pair of goggles which Burrows
- 7:41Speaker 6: had been forced to wear during the hijacking.
- 7:43Speaker 5: They were an ordinary industrial type, easily obtained and impossible
- 7:47Speaker 5: to trace other than those belonging to Burrows. There were
- 7:50Speaker 5: no fingerprints on them. Late that afternoon, the missing truck
- 7:53Speaker 5: and trailer was found empty in a deserted section of
- 7:56Speaker 5: the valley, no latent, fingerprints or other physical evidence.
- 7:59Speaker 6: Nine am the next morning, we met with Captain Dideon.
- 8:03Speaker 7: Carcos going on how to trace something that said Skipper
- 8:05Speaker 7: High Great Scott's Whiskey. One hundred and fifty cases you
- 8:08Speaker 7: got out of bullets and all the liquor wholesalers, serial numbers, listening.
- 8:11Speaker 6: That ex con Burrows. Nothing turned up on him, No, nothing,
- 8:13Speaker 6: We double checked. Everything about him is clean. You didn't
- 8:15Speaker 6: get anything off, had abandon the truck, no prints, no
- 8:18Speaker 6: physical evidence. Seems like they got it down to a science.
- 8:20Speaker 6: Sound like the fad Brown.
- 8:21Speaker 7: He's getting all the kicks from the warehouse operators. Thirty
- 8:24Speaker 7: days and six hijackings. How about moving faster? Well, as
- 8:26Speaker 7: you know, we got twelve steakhouts running down freight load
- 8:29Speaker 7: skipper Yeah, incoming out going, got three girls in the Stat's.
- 8:32Speaker 6: Office doing nothing but making runs for us. No news respect.
- 8:34Speaker 6: We've got a meeting with an informant after lunch. He
- 8:36Speaker 6: figures he may have something. There's nothing to bank on it.
- 8:38Speaker 7: How about an inside tip off on these jobs? Any
- 8:40Speaker 7: indication the gang's working something like that. No, nothing, Definitely
- 8:43Speaker 7: skipper jobs seem to be pretty well cased.
- 8:45Speaker 6: Though.
- 8:46Speaker 7: We've checked out everybody with a record working.
- 8:47Speaker 6: For the trucking lines. No reason to think any of
- 8:49Speaker 6: them had to end in it.
- 8:51Speaker 7: Excuse me a minute, didion Yeah, live Oak near Trenton, happening, Yeah,
- 8:59Speaker 7: I got it right, Thank you. Yet another truck earl
- 9:03Speaker 7: this morning, where there's a location. Better move on. It
- 9:06Speaker 7: looks like they got their signals crushed. Honey, mean, it
- 9:08Speaker 7: doesn't make sense. The cargo of the hijack, what was it?
- 9:10Speaker 7: A load of toothbrushes?
- 9:15Speaker 5: Nine three am, Ben and I drove to the intersection
- 9:18Speaker 5: of Live Oat Drive and Trenton Avenue in the Hollywood Hills,
- 9:21Speaker 5: where we located the latest driver to.
- 9:23Speaker 6: Fall victim to the gang of hijackers. His story was
- 9:26Speaker 6: the same as the others.
- 9:27Speaker 5: He'd stopped his truck for a red light at a
- 9:29Speaker 5: deserted intersection when a man jumped on the running board
- 9:32Speaker 5: and pointed a gun at his head. The man with
- 9:34Speaker 5: the gun took over the wheel and forced the driver
- 9:36Speaker 5: to put on a pair.
- 9:37Speaker 6: Of black dot welders goggles.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Then the truck was moved to a remote spot where
- 9:41Speaker 5: the driver was transferred to a car and later released
- 9:44Speaker 5: in the remote section of the Hollywood Hills. The hijack
- 9:47Speaker 5: truck was found empty a day later, and again there
- 9:50Speaker 5: was no physical evidence, no fingerprints.
- 9:52Speaker 6: The driver could add little to what we already knew.
- 9:55Speaker 5: The only point that made the case any different from
- 9:57Speaker 5: those that had gone before was the cargo that had
- 9:59Speaker 5: been stolen.
- 10:00Speaker 6: A load of toothbrushes.
- 10:02Speaker 5: We began an immediate check of the neighborhood where, according
- 10:04Speaker 5: to the driver, he was first held up. It was
- 10:06Speaker 5: a fairly remote intersection in the San Fernando Valley. After
- 10:10Speaker 5: four hours of interviewing ranchers and gas station attendance, we
- 10:13Speaker 5: talked to the operator of a practice driving range for
- 10:15Speaker 5: golfers located just off the highway.
- 10:17Speaker 6: His name was Fred Garrison.
- 10:19Speaker 9: As a matter of fact, I did notice something out
- 10:20Speaker 9: of the ordinary this morning, a little four to six am,
- 10:22Speaker 9: I think, spotted this big semi turning off on that
- 10:25Speaker 9: dirt road down the highway there.
- 10:26Speaker 6: Now which dirt road is that, miss Garrison?
- 10:28Speaker 9: Oh, right up the highway there? Shit, Oh, it turns
- 10:31Speaker 9: off by that clump of trees. Couldn't figure out why
- 10:34Speaker 9: a big truck and trailer be taken that road. Doesn't
- 10:36Speaker 9: make sense.
- 10:36Speaker 6: What do you mean?
- 10:37Speaker 9: What's the dead end? No reason why a driver turned
- 10:39Speaker 9: off there by mistake. There's a big sign right there
- 10:41Speaker 9: at the intersection says not a through street right there?
- 10:44Speaker 9: See it plainnessday.
- 10:45Speaker 6: I wonder if he could describe the truck force, mister Garrison.
- 10:47Speaker 9: It was pretty good size, one of those big aluminum jobs.
- 10:50Speaker 9: Black lettering on the side. I think, yeah, it turned
- 10:52Speaker 9: off the highway, went down the dirt road a little ways,
- 10:54Speaker 9: and then it turned off into that grove of trees
- 10:56Speaker 9: and the driver cut the lights.
- 10:57Speaker 7: Did you notice any activity going on in Goo?
- 11:00Speaker 6: No?
- 11:00Speaker 9: No, I didn't. Oh maybe I should have walked over
- 11:03Speaker 9: and checked it. I figured it was just some truck
- 11:04Speaker 9: driver pulling up to catch a few weeks asleep.
- 11:06Speaker 6: And I see my boy Dave was with me at the.
- 11:08Speaker 9: Time, wanted to check it, but I told him to
- 11:10Speaker 9: mind his own business.
- 11:11Speaker 6: He says. A couple of minutes.
- 11:12Speaker 9: After the truck pulled in, he saw Gray s Dan
- 11:14Speaker 9: come down the road and park next to the truck,
- 11:15Speaker 9: right in that same clump of trees.
- 11:17Speaker 6: Well, I didn't always look a little suspicious to use her.
- 11:19Speaker 6: Oh I suppose so, and away.
- 11:21Speaker 9: I just don't like the metal where it's not my business.
- 11:23Speaker 6: That's awful. Did your boy Dave get a good look
- 11:25Speaker 6: at this grace oft and you.
- 11:26Speaker 9: Know you want to come in the officer sit down?
- 11:29Speaker 6: Sure?
- 11:29Speaker 7: Oh huh, hey, sit right there if you like.
- 11:36Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 11:38Speaker 7: Let's see now where worry about your boy Dave's Oh yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 7: you said that he saw Gray sa'dan pulling next to
- 11:43Speaker 7: the truck over in that plump of trees.
- 11:45Speaker 5: Did he mention anything else that he noticed about the car,
- 11:47Speaker 5: I mean, other than the fact that it was a
- 11:48Speaker 5: gray Sedan.
- 11:49Speaker 9: Well, yeah, I think he did say something else about it.
- 11:51Speaker 9: Let's see, I wasn't listening too close at the time.
- 11:54Speaker 9: Dave's doing some arians downtown for me right now. He'll
- 11:57Speaker 9: be phoning in pretty soon, though I can ask him
- 11:59Speaker 9: about it. Then he paid a lot more attention to
- 12:01Speaker 9: the thing than I did.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Well, how long were the truck and trailer in the
- 12:04Speaker 5: Saedan park in the grove of trees?
- 12:05Speaker 6: Do you remember there?
- 12:06Speaker 9: Well, not too long, maybe fifteen twenty minutes. The car
- 12:09Speaker 9: pulled out first and took off down the highway away
- 12:12Speaker 9: from town that way, see, and the truck and trailer
- 12:14Speaker 9: left few minutes after waste.
- 12:16Speaker 7: Figure they were up to And we've got an idea
- 12:18Speaker 7: what time was that Againza, when you saw the truck
- 12:20Speaker 7: turn off the highway onto the dirt.
- 12:21Speaker 9: Room, About six am, maybe a few minutes one way
- 12:24Speaker 9: or the other.
- 12:25Speaker 6: I wonder if you'd show us the exact spot where
- 12:27Speaker 6: you saw that truck park, would you? Oh?
- 12:28Speaker 2: Sure?
- 12:28Speaker 9: Here you want to come over here with me to window.
- 12:31Speaker 6: Huh.
- 12:33Speaker 9: Now you see the clump of trees there?
- 12:36Speaker 6: Yeah, how you glipped? How they bought it right on
- 12:38Speaker 6: the road.
- 12:38Speaker 9: Yeah, maybe that's him now, yes, fair ways? Oh yeah, Dave,
- 12:44Speaker 9: how'd you make out? M oh fine, no, no, no, listen.
- 12:49Speaker 9: A couple of policemen here now. They're asking about that
- 12:51Speaker 9: truck and that gray Saedan you saw up on the
- 12:53Speaker 9: road this morning. I want to know what you noticed
- 12:55Speaker 9: about the Sadan besides the color a I.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Oh you did?
- 13:01Speaker 9: Uh huh, yeah, Well you better head back here. They
- 13:04Speaker 9: probably want to talk to you about it. All right, Davy?
- 13:07Speaker 6: Bye, what do you have to say?
- 13:09Speaker 9: I'll hear be back in about twenty minutes. I figured
- 13:11Speaker 9: you want to talk to him?
- 13:12Speaker 6: How about the sedan? Said, you get a pretty good
- 13:13Speaker 6: look at it? Did he say? Yeah?
- 13:14Speaker 9: I guess so he got part of a license number.
- 13:20Speaker 5: Red Garrison's son, Dave returned and gave us all the
- 13:22Speaker 5: pertinent facts about the truck and the gray Sedan which
- 13:25Speaker 5: he'd noticed in the neighborhood.
- 13:26Speaker 6: Early that morning.
- 13:27Speaker 5: His description of the truck and trailer what he saw,
- 13:29Speaker 5: but anyway, Matt's closely with that of the latest vehicle
- 13:32Speaker 5: to be hijacked. He described the car as a gray Sedan,
- 13:35Speaker 5: and he said it looked to him like it was
- 13:36Speaker 5: a late model Nash, but he couldn't be sure.
- 13:39Speaker 6: He said.
- 13:39Speaker 5: The first three units on the license plate were seventy seven.
- 13:43Speaker 5: The location in the grove of trees where the truck
- 13:45Speaker 5: had been spotted was checked thoroughly. Outside of some indefinite
- 13:48Speaker 5: tire tracks, there was no physical evidence. Four ten PM,
- 13:52Speaker 5: we put in a call to DMV and asked for
- 13:54Speaker 5: a rundown on the three license plate numbers. The next morning,
- 13:57Speaker 5: DMB returned to us a list of more than a
- 13:59Speaker 5: thousand auto registrations, which began with a figure seventy seven.
- 14:03Speaker 5: We went down the list and gradually eliminated six hundred
- 14:06Speaker 5: of these as not being physically close in description to
- 14:08Speaker 5: the car scene by Garrison's boy Dave.
- 14:11Speaker 6: We kept checking.
- 14:12Speaker 5: Almost three hundred more on the list were registered in
- 14:15Speaker 5: distant parts of the state. That left us with over
- 14:17Speaker 5: one hundred vehicles registered in or around Los Angeles to
- 14:20Speaker 5: check out.
- 14:21Speaker 6: It went slow. Three weeks passed.
- 14:24Speaker 5: We narrowed the list down to twenty three possibles. Tuesday,
- 14:27Speaker 5: December tenth, we were checking registrations with addresses in the
- 14:31Speaker 5: east end of the city.
- 14:32Speaker 6: It's a name on this one against Perry or Water
- 14:43Speaker 6: Straight back to drive. There's a car park and yeah,
- 14:46Speaker 6: let's try the bell again. Let me say, let's give
- 14:55Speaker 6: the car look. Be pre sure to get care. Nobody home,
- 15:00Speaker 6: garage wide open cars. Isn't they qualify so far? You

- 15:49Speaker 9: print evenly. The o's and the a's are clean. No,
- 15:53Speaker 9: this isn't the typewriter we're looking for. Yeah, capitals print high,
- 16:09Speaker 9: asianos are solid, peace slanted.
- 16:12Speaker 6: This is the.
- 16:12Speaker 10: One Tuesday, December tenth, two fifteen DM.
- 16:23Speaker 5: A pair of goggles found in the automobile registered to

- 16:33Speaker 6: Ben and I searched the car, but we failed to
- 16:35Speaker 6: come up with any additional physical evidence.
- 16:37Speaker 5: We left the garage, checked the house again to make
- 16:40Speaker 5: sure that there was nobody at home. Then we went
- 16:42Speaker 5: down the street close to the house to where we
- 16:44Speaker 5: parked our car. We put in a call to R
- 16:46Speaker 5: and I and requested a make on water ar Perry.
- 16:49Speaker 6: He had no previous criminal records.
- 16:51Speaker 5: A few minutes later, we spotted two women loaded with
- 16:54Speaker 5: grocery bags come down.
- 16:55Speaker 6: The street, go up the stairs at the Perry house
- 16:57Speaker 6: and let themselves in with a key.
- 16:59Speaker 5: Went up to the front door, rang the bell, and
- 17:01Speaker 5: the younger of the two women answered, dark brown hair,
- 17:04Speaker 5: blue eyes, about five foot six, twenty eight twenty nine
- 17:07Speaker 5: years old. We identified ourselves and she showed us into
- 17:10Speaker 5: the living room. She told us her name was Leona
- 17:12Speaker 5: Perry and that Walter Perry was her husband. They'd been
- 17:15Speaker 5: married eleven years, no children. We asked her where her
- 17:18Speaker 5: husband was, and she said he was out of town
- 17:20Speaker 5: on a business trip up north com outa Vista, California.
- 17:23Speaker 6: We asked her what line of business he.
- 17:25Speaker 11: Was in, Well, right now, will Is Jewelry Sales me

- 17:33Speaker 8: Yes, that's right.
- 17:34Speaker 6: How do you go up north Man to do well?
- 17:36Speaker 8: I think he went up by train. I'm not sure I.
- 17:38Speaker 6: Have any idea how we might contact your husband of.
- 17:40Speaker 11: North No, I'm afraid I don't. He said he had
- 17:43Speaker 11: a couple of business apartments in different towns in that
- 17:45Speaker 11: area up there. He didn't tell me where he'd be staying.
- 17:48Speaker 11: What's it about, sarge, mister routine check and miss Perry?
- 17:52Speaker 6: Is that a photograph of your husband over there at
- 17:53Speaker 6: the piano? Yes, one's he expected back to know.
- 17:57Speaker 8: Let's see, this is Tuesday, should home sometimes Thursday?
- 18:02Speaker 6: A minute ago? You said, right now, your husband's a

- 18:06Speaker 8: No, world is a truck driver.
- 18:07Speaker 6: He worked here in Los Angeles.
- 18:09Speaker 8: No, he groves for company up north in the Bay area, Oakland, Berkeley.
- 18:12Speaker 8: He had that job for ten years, almost from the
- 18:14Speaker 8: day we were married.
- 18:16Speaker 11: And then last December he had a fight with the
- 18:18Speaker 11: boss and clips we moved down here to find work
- 18:20Speaker 11: butt and just pretend to get placed.
- 18:22Speaker 6: How long has he been selling jewelry.
- 18:23Speaker 11: Now it was about eight months. I'd say you're doing
- 18:27Speaker 11: very good at it. You have more now than when
- 18:29Speaker 11: he's driving a truck, a lot of.
- 18:31Speaker 6: Money to Jeers. And it's just you and your husband
- 18:33Speaker 6: living here, is that right?
- 18:35Speaker 8: No, my mother lives with us too. We just got

- 18:42Speaker 6: I don't say. That's all right, ma'am. I think you
- 18:44Speaker 6: can give us the information we need.
- 18:46Speaker 11: Well, I'd like to know what this is about. I'd
- 18:48Speaker 11: appreciate it if you'd tell me. World isn't in any kind
- 18:51Speaker 11: of trouble?
- 18:51Speaker 7: Is he just a routine investigation, Miss Perry, doesn't necessarily
- 18:55Speaker 7: mean your husband's in law.
- 18:56Speaker 8: I want to tell you right now my husband was involved
- 18:58Speaker 8: in anything. I had trouble with the police. Is like
- 19:01Speaker 8: water have trouble with the police.
- 19:02Speaker 6: What is it?
- 19:02Speaker 8: Letter, It's nothing. Mabby's policemen want to talk to wald
- 19:05Speaker 8: and I just want to ask him a few questions
- 19:06Speaker 8: and all. This is my mother, missus Burt, this is
- 19:10Speaker 8: it's Friday, mister Marr.
- 19:11Speaker 12: I told you, leone, I felt it all day.
- 19:13Speaker 8: Something's wrong.
- 19:14Speaker 12: Walter's done something.
- 19:15Speaker 8: There's don't decide to let it get him off.
- 19:16Speaker 6: Please.
- 19:17Speaker 12: The officers told me.
- 19:18Speaker 8: They want to talk to all episode.
- 19:19Speaker 12: But forth he hasn't done anything.
- 19:20Speaker 6: Why do they want to talk to it routine judy, ma'am.
- 19:22Speaker 6: There's nothing to get excited about it.
- 19:23Speaker 12: I know what happened. I felt it all the time.
- 19:25Speaker 13: That funny job he has selling jewelry, going out at
- 19:27Speaker 13: all hours couldn't fool me.
- 19:29Speaker 12: I knew it wasn't right. What's he done?
- 19:31Speaker 9: Where he's relative?
- 19:32Speaker 6: Was?
- 19:32Speaker 12: We got a right to know?
- 19:33Speaker 6: There's nothing we can tell you, definitely, ma'am.
- 19:35Speaker 5: How about these odd working hours your husband has missus Perry,
- 19:38Speaker 5: what's the reason for that?
- 19:39Speaker 6: Could you tell us? Why don't know?
- 19:41Speaker 12: Water works for himself.
- 19:42Speaker 8: He just has to make business contexts when he can.
- 19:44Speaker 6: That's all.
- 19:45Speaker 8: Sometimes it's late at night, sometimes early in the morning.
- 19:49Speaker 12: Why don't you stay out of it?
- 19:50Speaker 8: After all, it's our.
- 19:51Speaker 12: Business, wall is mine? Just mark my wordly wan to
- 19:53Speaker 12: find out about this. That husband yours has done something

- 19:57Speaker 12: I felt it all along. Please take these jewels. Business
- 20:00Speaker 12: is big money. I should have left and taken you
- 20:02Speaker 12: with me that they.
- 20:03Speaker 9: Started Waters a truck driver.
- 20:04Speaker 12: It's all you'll ever be. It's where he should have stayed.
- 20:06Speaker 12: There are you always picking out Water?
- 20:07Speaker 6: Why?
- 20:08Speaker 13: Because I told you in the first place you never
- 20:09Speaker 13: should have married him. Eleven years ago I told you
- 20:12Speaker 13: I never should have come.
- 20:12Speaker 12: To stay with you.
- 20:13Speaker 13: You couldn't go and marry one of those nice boys
- 20:15Speaker 13: you met at school. It had to be Water Perry. Well,
- 20:17Speaker 13: maybe you'll see now trouble with the police. Now you'll
- 20:19Speaker 13: see what kind of a man you shut up for.
- 20:21Speaker 8: Sorry, I'll.
- 20:25Speaker 6: Well, I'm afraid that isn't helping much.
- 20:26Speaker 12: Miss burg was What is it that can help?
- 20:30Speaker 9: Kids?
- 20:30Speaker 12: Should try to tell him something, make it easy for him.
- 20:32Speaker 7: Never listened that gray sedan back in the garage? Man,
- 20:35Speaker 7: does anyone else drive it besides mister Perry?
- 20:37Speaker 6: Do you know?
- 20:37Speaker 12: No, Leona doesn't drive. World is the only one who
- 20:39Speaker 12: runs it.
- 20:40Speaker 6: He drives it to all these business appointments. He has
- 20:42Speaker 6: it ought out, It's right?
- 20:43Speaker 12: How many times he doesn't take it so when he's
- 20:45Speaker 12: out of town.
- 20:46Speaker 6: You ever seen this pair of goggles before? Man?
- 20:49Speaker 12: No, I never hear What does it mean that tape
- 20:51Speaker 12: all over in front of him.
- 20:52Speaker 6: How about your son and last friends? Do you ever
- 20:54Speaker 6: bring any of them here to the.
- 20:55Speaker 13: House since I've been staying here the last six months.
- 20:58Speaker 13: Call him on the phone, He goes out, doesn't bring
- 21:00Speaker 13: anyone around though.
- 21:01Speaker 6: I'm just sick.
- 21:02Speaker 7: Well, can you tell us anything about this jewelry business
- 21:04Speaker 7: mister Berry's working here.
- 21:05Speaker 12: I don't even want to think about it.
- 21:07Speaker 13: I raised four daughters, nice girls, every one of them, attractive,
- 21:11Speaker 13: plans for them, and you want them to be happy
- 21:12Speaker 13: and marry some nice fellow, have a nice, comfortable home.
- 21:14Speaker 13: You try to tell them.
- 21:15Speaker 6: They never listen about the car man.
- 21:17Speaker 13: You get to be seventeen and they know everything. My
- 21:19Speaker 13: girls could have married wealthy if they were smart. A
- 21:21Speaker 13: lot of other girls have done it.
- 21:22Speaker 12: They had nice clothes, they got through business school, good
- 21:24Speaker 12: home training. All us talk about love.
- 21:26Speaker 6: They're also smart.
- 21:28Speaker 12: They know everything, and they know nothing. This is what happens.
- 21:31Speaker 12: We wake up and find out.
- 21:32Speaker 8: Would you finish putting a girl through the way?
- 21:34Speaker 12: Move totally off anything you wild? Leona didn't mean to
- 21:37Speaker 12: upset you. Maybe things will be all right.
- 21:39Speaker 6: And just a few more questions, Miss Verry, that's all.
- 21:41Speaker 8: Well, whatever it is, I know long hasn't done anything wrong.
- 21:44Speaker 8: He wouldn't do anything wrong.
- 21:45Speaker 12: It doesn't make sense.
- 21:46Speaker 8: There's just no reason for it.
- 21:47Speaker 12: I remember your father ly on us sixteen years.
- 21:49Speaker 6: We were married.
- 21:50Speaker 12: One night he packed up and left me. There wasn't
- 21:51Speaker 12: any reason for that either, wasn't the move.
- 21:58Speaker 5: We continued questioning a whyfe and the mother in law
- 22:01Speaker 5: of the suspect, Walter Perry. From the wife, we got
- 22:03Speaker 5: the names and addresses of four close friends of Perry's
- 22:06Speaker 5: who were supposed to be associates of his in the
- 22:07Speaker 5: jewelry business.
- 22:09Speaker 6: In the basement and in.
- 22:10Speaker 5: A loft over the garage, we found more than a
- 22:12Speaker 5: dozen cases of high grade scotch whiskey, cases of expensive furs,
- 22:16Speaker 5: and other loot taken in the hijackings.
- 22:19Speaker 6: Missus Perry said her husband told Harry was storing his
- 22:21Speaker 6: stuff for some friends. Was only a small portion of
- 22:24Speaker 6: the taake.
- 22:25Speaker 5: We called the office and got out a broadcast and
- 22:27Speaker 5: an APB in the suspect and arranged for an immediate
- 22:30Speaker 5: stakeout on the Perry house. And then together with Matthews
- 22:33Speaker 5: and Gonzales from Robbery Detail, we began checking out the
- 22:36Speaker 5: four close friends of the suspect. We could locate only
- 22:38Speaker 5: two of them, but those two paid off in the
- 22:41Speaker 5: basements and garages of their homes, we found.
- 22:43Speaker 6: Another portion of the loot, along with.
- 22:45Speaker 5: Evidence that showed that both men had taken active parts
- 22:47Speaker 5: in the hijackings. They were booked at the main jail
- 22:50Speaker 5: on suspicion of two to eleven PC. A full week
- 22:53Speaker 5: went by, the stakeout continued on the Perry house, still
- 22:56Speaker 5: no sign of him. Saturday, December twentieth, four five pm
- 23:01Speaker 5: we checked back in at the office.
- 23:04Speaker 6: This thing shorte Dragon. I don't it would be nice
- 23:06Speaker 6: to wrap it up before Christmas. We'll then get it
- 23:08Speaker 6: all the way. Might working a couple of days off? No,
- 23:10Speaker 6: I don't know if I'm too interested, Joe or the
- 23:12Speaker 6: days off. I mean, we've got visitors on the wear again.
- 23:14Speaker 6: They mean for the holidays.
- 23:15Speaker 7: Who's kind the same old bunch. My brother in law
- 23:17Speaker 7: and his wife and his kids and that little doll there. Well,
- 23:19Speaker 7: they were just leave you for three weeks worth. They
- 23:21Speaker 7: what's the deal?
- 23:22Speaker 6: Oh, brother in law got home finally notice from his
- 23:23Speaker 6: company he's been transferred out here.
- 23:25Speaker 7: They're going to stay with us all through the holidays
- 23:27Speaker 7: and then they'll start house hunt. How about man, he's
- 23:30Speaker 7: got a problem. He's got a new rug in the
- 23:32Speaker 7: living room. How about twenty to one on it? Jill,
- 23:35Speaker 7: what's a little fox?
- 23:37Speaker 6: Teary? Oh?
- 23:38Speaker 7: Hi skipper? Anything before we check out? Be's the news
- 23:41Speaker 7: for you? Just talk to the Ventoria Sheriff's office.
- 23:43Speaker 6: We all my favorite. What do you mean? They grabbed
- 23:45Speaker 6: Walter Perry half an hour ago.
- 23:50Speaker 5: Monday, December twenty second, So I suspect Walter Perry was
- 23:53Speaker 5: returned to Los Angeles.
- 23:54Speaker 6: He was taken to the interrogation.
- 23:56Speaker 5: Room when Captain Diddyon then and I questioned him for
- 23:58Speaker 5: almost two hours. He was confronted with the evidence and
- 24:01Speaker 5: testimony against him, and after another hour and a half
- 24:03Speaker 5: of interrogation, he broke. He gave us a full signed
- 24:07Speaker 5: statement describing his part in the campaign of hijackings. He
- 24:10Speaker 5: also gave us the names of everyone in the gang,
- 24:13Speaker 5: how they participated in to what extent he said. Most
- 24:16Speaker 5: of the property looted from the hijacked trucks was stored
- 24:18Speaker 5: in a rented barn located at the north end of
- 24:20Speaker 5: the San Fernando Valley.
- 24:22Speaker 6: The detail of men checked it and confirmed the information.
- 24:25Speaker 5: The suspect's wife, Leona, was notified of her husband's arrest.
- 24:29Speaker 6: One thirty five pm. We completed our interrogation. That's it,
- 24:33Speaker 6: very nice, goough. You asked me a lot of questions.
- 24:35Speaker 6: How about it? Can I ask you with? What's it? Well?
- 24:37Speaker 6: Why do you think I did it? Why I got
- 24:38Speaker 6: mixed up in this? Well? According to your statements, you
- 24:40Speaker 6: wanted the money a minute or you've been out to
- 24:41Speaker 6: my house? Haven't you?
- 24:42Speaker 7: You met my wife? And answer, I guess you met
- 24:44Speaker 7: a mother too. Yeah, well, then you've got it. Nobody
- 24:47Speaker 7: in the work would make me go for a hijack deal,
- 24:49Speaker 7: but she could. I remember the morning I admit up
- 24:52Speaker 7: my mind to do it her. I was out the
- 24:53Speaker 7: kitchen here yapping at Leona in the other room, the
- 24:56Speaker 7: same old roasting abous, the truck driver that was me
- 25:00Speaker 7: eleven years. The wife and I've been married, Her mother
- 25:01Speaker 7: lived with us, nine of them. Didn't get any better,
- 25:04Speaker 7: didn't get any worse, Just the same old yapping her
- 25:06Speaker 7: and her four girls. Why couldn't they listen to her?
- 25:08Speaker 7: They were the best girls in the world. Why couldn't
- 25:10Speaker 7: they marry money?
- 25:12Speaker 6: Why don't it to be guys like truck drivers? Stupid
- 25:14Speaker 6: truck driver, same thing every day, always the same, nine
- 25:17Speaker 6: years of it day. So I wanted to get enough
- 25:20Speaker 6: money to rub in her face, enough to make a
- 25:21Speaker 6: choke on. You can hate somebody for that. I don't
- 25:25Speaker 6: know how many years they'll give me, but I'm going
- 25:26Speaker 6: to hate her.
- 25:27Speaker 9: Everyone remained jail wasn't ready to go.
- 25:31Speaker 6: I want to be a minute. Backs. Thank you all right, Gord? Yeah, uh, Sergean.
- 25:38Speaker 6: My wife's been told her. She knows about it. She's
- 25:40Speaker 6: waiting outside in the hall with her mother, and you
- 25:42Speaker 6: can see him on the way.
- 25:42Speaker 14: Out, and a lot of thanks. Hi, honey, I'm sorry.
- 25:53Speaker 14: Why did you do ask him when they're they're honey?
- 25:55Speaker 7: You heard as much of it as I did, nine
- 25:57Speaker 7: years worth of I guess it finally got me sick.
- 25:59Speaker 6: She wanted you to have money, so I want have
- 26:00Speaker 6: to get it. You come and see me when you came.
- 26:04Speaker 12: Yeah, I wasn't going to any jail to see you.
- 26:06Speaker 12: I knew it all along. I knew what you would
- 26:08Speaker 12: the truth. She never should have married you.
- 26:10Speaker 6: All right, pray, let's go.
- 26:14Speaker 9: Fine.
- 26:18Speaker 6: How are you figuring? I don't know. How about some coffee? Okay?
- 26:25Speaker 6: She is funny.
- 26:26Speaker 7: You see other people sweating that your troubles looked like nothing.
- 26:29Speaker 7: I'm just thinking about what's that those in laws in
- 26:32Speaker 7: what about it? Yes, I hadn't got it half.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Then the story you have just heard was true, only
- 26:45Speaker 2: the names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:47Speaker 4: On March fifth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
- 26:50Speaker 4: eighty seven, City in County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:53Speaker 4: In a moment the results of that trial, Walter Richard
- 27:05Speaker 4: Perry was tried and convicted on several counts of robbery
- 27:07Speaker 4: in the first degree. He was sentenced to the state
- 27:10Speaker 4: penitentiary for the term prescribed by law. First degree robbery
- 27:13Speaker 4: is punishable by a term of five years to life.
- 27:16Speaker 4: His accomplices received similar sentences, Ladies and gentlemen, As we know,
- 27:21Speaker 4: thousands of people in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Illinois have
- 27:24Speaker 4: been driven from their homes by floodwaters.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Many are being sheltered and fed with a Red Cross.
- 27:29Speaker 2: All Americans are urged to give through their local Red
- 27:32Speaker 2: Cross chapters. Your contribution of just a dollar will give
- 27:35Speaker 2: you a feeling of justifiable pride.
- 27:46Speaker 4: You have just heard drag Meth a series of authentic
- 27:49Speaker 4: cases from official filets technical advice comes from the office
- 27:52Speaker 4: of Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 27:58Speaker 6: Stay tuned for Counterspy Next time, NBC.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Welcome Back. I was wondering how Romero's in laws would
- 28:12Speaker 1: come back into the tititle, and of course it turns
- 28:17Speaker 1: out it has to do with both Romero's in laws
- 28:22Speaker 1: and the perpetrators. I guess in some ways, Romero's reacting
- 28:27Speaker 1: to other people's family troubles the same way that people
- 28:31Speaker 1: in the nineties did when they watched those sort of
- 28:35Speaker 1: daytime talk shows, or today when people watch reality TV
- 28:39Speaker 1: shows and they see people behaving so crazily and they're like, Okay,
- 28:44Speaker 1: my family is messed up, but at least we're not
- 28:47Speaker 1: that bad now. I do sympathize with the perpetrator a
- 28:52Speaker 1: little bit, but I don't like the idea of, particularly
- 28:58Speaker 1: in a case like this, of someone driving someone else
- 29:03Speaker 1: to commit a crime, which is essentially what he did
