- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. Happy Monday.
- 0:06We've got a new week, fresh start, and just more
- 0:10opportunities to walk closely with the Lord and learn more
- 0:14things. So today we are going to be
- 0:17talking about something that is so simple, it's only a few
- 0:22verses, but also they are so deeply convicting if we truly
- 0:26sit with it. So I'm going to go ahead and get
- 0:29right into today's passage. We're going to be in first John
- 0:32chapter 2, reading through verses 28 to 29.
- 0:38And now, dear children, remain in Him so that when He is
- 0:42revealed, we may have joyful confidence and not be ashamed
- 0:47when we stand before Him at His appearing.
- 0:51If you know that He is righteous, you may be sure that
- 0:54everyone who practices righteousness has been divinely
- 0:58fathered by Him. Now there is a keyword here that
- 1:03we cannot miss, remain or continue.
- 1:08Abide. We just talked about remaining
- 1:12in Him in the last podcast episode, but now this is taking
- 1:16it a step further, continuing in Him.
- 1:21This is daily. It's ongoing and consistent,
- 1:25meaning it's not seasonal or occasional.
- 1:28It's not just when it's convenient for you or when you
- 1:32feel like it. It's every single day because
- 1:37the visible proof of a true follower of Christ is righteous
- 1:42behavior. That does not imply perfection,
- 1:46but direction. And when God gives you a new
- 1:50heart, it births new desires, which then leads to new actions.
- 1:58Yes, you still face your flesh's desires, but your greatest goal
- 2:03becomes not to please yourself, but to please God.
- 2:09And behavior is not ultimately what saves us.
- 2:13Ephesians 28 makes that so clear that it is only God's grace and
- 2:18we receive that in faith. But behavior does show if our
- 2:23faith is genuine. That's what James chapter 2
- 2:27verses 14 to 17 goes into. It talks about how you can do
- 2:32good things but with no real faith.
- 2:36Or you can claim to have faith but have no evidence of it in
- 2:40your life. And both are super dangerous
- 2:44because both can lead to shame when Jesus returns.
- 2:50But those who have faith and those who consistently pursue
- 2:54what is right and good, those are the people living
- 2:59authentically in Christ. And I want to sit with this for
- 3:04a second because continue obviously comes from continuous.
- 3:11So that means it's not just showing up during certain
- 3:15seasons of your life, like at Christmas time when you serve or
- 3:20when life slows down and you have more time.
- 3:24It's not just when you feel spiritually motivated or on a
- 3:27high. It's not just when it fits your
- 3:29schedule or energy. Following Jesus is a daily
- 3:34decision. Jesus tells us to take up our
- 3:37cross every day, so we get to choose Him every single day,
- 3:42even when it's hard and even when it's costly.
- 3:46And part of continuing in Him means this.
- 3:50You do not go back to what He has already called you out of.
- 3:54You don't return to what was killing you.
- 3:58So old habits, toxic mindsets, environments, places, people are
- 4:05patterns that you know are going to tempt you and lead you into
- 4:09sin. During my quiet time this
- 4:12morning, God gave me this picture and I don't know if it's
- 4:17because I've been thinking of spring shopping, but I really
- 4:19like it here. Why would you go back to your
- 4:23grave clothes when Christ has already clothed you in
- 4:27righteousness? Scripture talks about this in
- 4:31Isaiah 61 verse 10, that we have been given the garment of
- 4:36salvation and the robe of righteousness.
- 4:40So here is what makes this even more powerful.
- 4:45The process of sanctification is God daily making you more into
- 4:50His image, into the image of His Son Jesus.
- 4:54So you are not who you used to be, you're being transformed.
- 4:59So of course, those old clothes, your past life, they're not
- 5:04meant to fit you anymore. They're not made for who you're
- 5:08becoming. And just like you would not try
- 5:11to squeeze into clothes from middle school or maybe high
- 5:15school, because you have grown and matured, your spirit has
- 5:20grown too. You have outgrown those old
- 5:23ways, those old habits, so stop trying to go back and wear what
- 5:30no longer fits who you are in Christ Jesus.
- 5:34Let's bring this into today's culture for a minute.
- 5:38Who would choose a fake designer bag or shoes or clothes, a nicer
- 5:44brand if you were actually offered the real one?
- 5:49I doubt anybody would. So why do we do that spiritually
- 5:53sometimes? Why do we return to the lie when
- 5:58we've actually been freely given the truth?
- 6:01Why do we settle for temporary pleasure when we have access to
- 6:06something real? It's through the great exchange
- 6:11that we see in 2nd Corinthians 5 verse 21, that Jesus took on our
- 6:17sin and gave us His righteousness, His purity
- 6:21instead. So with that, we are called to
- 6:26live in it. And Jesus is the very embodiment
- 6:30of righteousness. So if you're living in him,
- 6:34you're walking in it. I heard the Lord say to me, you
- 6:40are a daughter of the king, so carry yourself like it.
- 6:45If you're a guy listening to this, you are a son.
- 6:49So live like it. Not with pride, but in humility,
- 6:55with confidence and freedom. Not shrinking back in shame, not
- 7:00hiding, not going back because we now know the truth.
- 7:06So don't return to the lie or the false identity that you once
- 7:10had. And I just want to ask you guys
- 7:15something. Do you just know this truth or
- 7:19do you actually know and believe it?
- 7:22Are you truly receiving it in your heart?
- 7:24Because there truly is a difference.
- 7:29And as you go throughout your day, pay attention to this.
- 7:33Is there anything in your life currently that is keeping you
- 7:37from walking in freedom? Anything that is hindering you
- 7:43or pulling you back into old patterns, old mindsets, your old
- 7:47grave clothes. What voices are you allowing to
- 7:53shape your thoughts? Are they rooted in the Word of
- 7:57God or are they just adding noise, confusion, or maybe even
- 8:01condemnation? Because if it is not from the
- 8:06Lord, it's not truth. And finally, I just want all of
- 8:12us to sit and reflect with this. If Jesus returned in a few
- 8:17hours, literally today, would you be sprinting to him?
- 8:23Would you run to Him with that joy, confidence, and freedom?
- 8:29Or would something in you possibly hesitate, wishing that
- 8:32you would live differently, wishing that you had chosen Him
- 8:36more? This is not meant to instill
- 8:40fear, but to remind us that we are to continue in Him every
- 8:47day, step by step, not in perfection, but inconsistency.
- 8:56So let me go ahead and close this out in prayer.
- 9:01Dear Jesus, thank you for making us new, for clothing us in Your
- 9:08robe of righteousness. I pray that You would aid us in
- 9:15not going back to what we have already been freed from.
- 9:19Would You strengthen us to continue in You every single
- 9:23day, Not periodically, not just when we feel like it, but daily
- 9:29to choose You over ourselves, over sin, over comfort?
- 9:35Would you transform us by the renewing of our minds?
- 9:38Lord, shape our hearts and make us more like you every day.
- 9:45I pray that we would walk confidently as your children,
- 9:50whether as a daughter or as a son of the Most High.
- 9:54Free us from any shame and may we live fully alive in you.
- 10:00Jesus, we surrender this week to you.
- 10:03We give you this day and we just praise you and we offer
- 10:09ourselves to you as a fragrant offering.
- 10:13We love you, Jesus, in your name.
- 10:16Amen. OK you guys.
- 10:18Well that's today's episode. Have a great rest of your Monday
- 10:22and I will see y'all on the next one.
