- 2:19Speaker 1: highs and lows that come with having a sport as
- 2:23Speaker 1: your career, the difficulties that go with shulting on yourself,
- 2:28Speaker 1: and how Chase has used some of her biggest letdowns

- 3:43Speaker 1: Let's get to hurdling. I am sitting down with Chase Ealy.
- 4:02Speaker 1: You may know her as a world champion shot buttter.
- 4:06Speaker 1: How are we doing today?
- 4:07Speaker 2: I'm doing great. You've taught me at a good time.
- 4:10Speaker 2: I'm settling down and I got my wine preseason.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Pre season. That's the best and the best. I've been
- 4:20Speaker 1: looking forward to this conversation all week because you're just
- 4:24Speaker 1: such a ray of light and your episode was one
- 4:27Speaker 1: of the most listened to episodes of Hurdle from twenty
- 4:30Speaker 1: twenty three.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I don't know why I'm not that interesting.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I completely disagree. This series that we're recording for is
- 4:41Speaker 1: really like a moment for us to recap, take a break,
- 4:45Speaker 1: do some reflection, So general feelings on the past three
- 4:49Speaker 1: sixty five. Talk to me about where you're at.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I think last year was was good for me and
- 4:53Speaker 2: like journey wise, because I kind of had like a
- 4:57Speaker 2: lull and wasn't I wasn't competing bad meaning great was I.
- 5:01Speaker 2: And we kind of chatted and I was telling you
- 5:04Speaker 2: about like how I was feeling going into worlds and
- 5:05Speaker 2: stuff and wanting to win, and you know I did,
- 5:08Speaker 2: and I think I I'm still I'm still trying to
- 5:14Speaker 2: like like let all the feelings, you know, take over,
- 5:17Speaker 2: because it's so hard. I always talk about it like
- 5:21Speaker 2: in sport, you kind of have to be a goldfish
- 5:23Speaker 2: and that goes with it good or the bad. You know,
- 5:25Speaker 2: that's like one of my things. So your gold fit.
- 5:27Speaker 2: If something bad happens, you gotta just forget it. When
- 5:30Speaker 2: something good happens, you kind of do too, because you
- 5:32Speaker 2: got to move on. Like I'm like, ooh I won World,
- 5:34Speaker 2: but I have the Diamon League final. Oh I got
- 5:36Speaker 2: the national record. Oh but I got I got approach
- 5:38Speaker 2: for the Olympics. Now, you know, like it can be
- 5:41Speaker 2: kind of depressing sometimes, but I feel like now in
- 5:45Speaker 2: this off season, I've had a lot more time to
- 5:49Speaker 2: feel those feelings I needed to feel. But yeah, it
- 5:51Speaker 2: was a good year overall.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I love the idea of the goldfish mentality. I've never
- 5:56Speaker 1: heard any athlete talk about that before. That's something that
- 6:00Speaker 1: you kind of concepted and came up with on your
- 6:03Speaker 1: own time, or something that came from a conversation with
- 6:05Speaker 1: somebody else.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I think it was with my old coach Ryan, because
- 6:10Speaker 2: he was like an ethic too, and I don't know
- 6:11Speaker 2: where he heard it from, but I think it's just
- 6:13Speaker 2: something that's kind of gone down and you know, like
- 6:16Speaker 2: gone down in the in the ranks because he was
- 6:18Speaker 2: like a pro as well, and it's just like that
- 6:20Speaker 2: knowledge that you spread. But yeah, I think he was
- 6:23Speaker 2: the one who who told me that, and I kind
- 6:25Speaker 2: of was like, oh yeah, and I remember I had
- 6:28Speaker 2: like a bad meat and he was like, you know,
- 6:30Speaker 2: you gotta it's like you gotta be like a go
- 6:32Speaker 2: old chick. You gotta forget it. And I was like okay,
- 6:33Speaker 2: and then I had a good meet and I was
- 6:34Speaker 2: like whoa wooh woo, you know, and I like was like, oh,
- 6:37Speaker 2: but I had this good meet and he's like, you
- 6:39Speaker 2: also have to forget that because now you get to
- 6:40Speaker 2: go into the next thing fresh and new, and you
- 6:43Speaker 2: can't have any anything really clouding that.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, when you say you're kind of experiencing the feels,
- 6:51Speaker 1: now articulate that a little bit more. What kind of
- 6:54Speaker 1: feels are we experiencing?
- 6:56Speaker 2: It was it's it's more so for twenty twenty two
- 6:59Speaker 2: and twenty twenty three, and I finally got because of
- 7:03Speaker 2: you know, the virus who shall not be named. Obviously
- 7:06Speaker 2: we have a lot of we've had a lot of
- 7:09Speaker 2: meats in a row for track and field. It was
- 7:11Speaker 2: because the Olympics got pushed back and World's got pushed back.
- 7:14Speaker 2: It was like World's worlds Now, it's World Indoors Olympics.
- 7:17Speaker 2: So it's like three years of straight majors, which never happens.
- 7:21Speaker 2: It's not what we're used to. It's usually one year
- 7:23Speaker 2: on one you're off of majors, and so like after
- 7:27Speaker 2: twenty twenty two, you like, I didn't get that loll
- 7:29Speaker 2: period of like you're world champion, you just go into
- 7:31Speaker 2: the next year and then it's immediately defend your title.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I didn't get what everyone else has where you have
- 7:36Speaker 2: that year where you're a world champion no matter what.
- 7:38Speaker 2: All year, I had to go straight into you got
- 7:40Speaker 2: to defend the title now like months later and you're like,
- 7:43Speaker 2: oh gosh, Like that's stressful. And so I think now
- 7:47Speaker 2: that I've got like I've gotten this moment, it's kind
- 7:50Speaker 2: of like, oh, I get to be like, wow, I'm
- 7:53Speaker 2: a two time world champion, I'm a two time Diamon
- 7:55Speaker 2: League champion, Like I'm a national record ho, Like I
- 7:57Speaker 2: get a hold that in a bit more. I think
- 8:00Speaker 2: it's resulted in, like my training's a lot better. I
- 8:02Speaker 2: think it's been a smoother transition into my my preseason
- 8:07Speaker 2: for the Olympics now because I've gotten to have my
- 8:10Speaker 2: moment and now I'm like okay, and now I can
- 8:12Speaker 2: just ease back in the training.
- 8:15Speaker 1: When you say it was stressful, do you think that
- 8:18Speaker 1: stress was the culmination mostly of internal pressure or external pressure.
- 8:24Speaker 2: On nder internal I was talking about this was I
- 8:27Speaker 2: went to Malta to do just like talk to some
- 8:31Speaker 2: kids and do kind of like a thing there with
- 8:33Speaker 2: my coach, and I was talking to them and a
- 8:35Speaker 2: lot of them asked me like, oh, like how do
- 8:36Speaker 2: you deal with it? And I was like, it's something
- 8:38Speaker 2: like it's different for everybody, but I was like, I
- 8:40Speaker 2: find that I've surrounded myself with the perfect people. My
- 8:44Speaker 2: coach doesn't put pressure on me, my family's really nice
- 8:47Speaker 2: about it, like my my husband will future husband is
- 8:51Speaker 2: really great, and so most of my stress and pressure
- 8:56Speaker 2: comes from with it. And I think that's true for
- 8:58Speaker 2: most athletes because I I remember going into world like
- 9:02Speaker 2: all year. It wasn't even until I got to Worlds
- 9:05Speaker 2: when I finally kind of eased out of that. But
- 9:07Speaker 2: all year it's like you're the world champion. You have
- 9:09Speaker 2: to win, says who you know? Says me in my brain,
- 9:12Speaker 2: Like nobody said that anywhere, just me, Like to me,
- 9:16Speaker 2: I was like, you have to win. And then when
- 9:17Speaker 2: I didn't win just the one time, it was kind
- 9:20Speaker 2: of like dominos.
- 9:22Speaker 1: For a few months, like you just said just that
- 9:25Speaker 1: one time. It's like one performance depending on when it
- 9:30Speaker 1: happens in the course of your year or your career,
- 9:33Speaker 1: could do so much to or for you, depending on
- 9:37Speaker 1: how you look at it.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred percent. That's kind of like what happened
- 9:42Speaker 2: to me, Like I had an injury indoors, and then
- 9:45Speaker 2: when I lost that first indoor meet and had a
- 9:47Speaker 2: bad result, Immediately it was negative, right because you just, oh,
- 9:52Speaker 2: you just lost to a bunch of people, Like you
- 9:54Speaker 2: just threw really bad, like your distance was two meters
- 9:56Speaker 2: less than what you've ever thrown. So immediately the negative
- 10:01Speaker 2: comes in. You don't think, oh, well I'm injured, Oh
- 10:04Speaker 2: well I don't have to win every time. Oh the
- 10:06Speaker 2: rule of thirds, none of it, Like all of that
- 10:08Speaker 2: goes out the window because you immediately in your head
- 10:11Speaker 2: are now you're going to put yourself down, aren't you.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I love that rule of thirds reference. For those of
- 10:16Speaker 1: you that are unfamiliar, this is an Alexi papus gem.
- 10:20Speaker 2: It's a third of the time it's gonna be bad,
- 10:22Speaker 2: a third of the time it's gonna be okay, and
- 10:24Speaker 2: a third of the time it's gonna be good.
- 10:27Speaker 1: And when you divide it up in that way. In
- 10:30Speaker 1: that format, you realize that so many of us that
- 10:34Speaker 1: have this expectation that it's going to be really good
- 10:37Speaker 1: ninety nine point nine percent of the time, we're kind
- 10:39Speaker 1: of fooling ourselves. So to have that amount of grace
- 10:42Speaker 1: and compassion to break it up in that rule of thirds,
- 10:45Speaker 1: it allows you to proceed with a much lighter conscience.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Yeah, totally. I think me and my coach, like, we
- 10:53Speaker 2: talked about this last time because I was kind of
- 10:56Speaker 2: talking about how I was having like the bad season,
- 10:58Speaker 2: you know, when things were terrible, but they weren't moving
- 11:02Speaker 2: in a way where you go, this girl's going to
- 11:04Speaker 2: defend her title and it's going to be amazing. And
- 11:08Speaker 2: we talked about it because of that, and my coach
- 11:10Speaker 2: is big on that. Like even just the other day,
- 11:12Speaker 2: my last training session was like really good, but the
- 11:15Speaker 2: one before that was like and my coach just said,
- 11:18Speaker 2: you know that was a bad one. Yeah, bad file
- 11:23Speaker 2: for now, put it in the bad file and then
- 11:25Speaker 2: we'll move on. I was like, yep.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And what's so interesting for those that don't have the context.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Chase mentioned that she has the American record for the
- 11:36Speaker 1: farthest shot put at twenty point seven to six meters,
- 11:39Speaker 1: So when she says, like I threw two meters short,
- 11:43Speaker 1: it's still like an inhuman amount of distance to make
- 11:48Speaker 1: that ball move.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the problem too, is you get that one
- 11:54Speaker 2: distance and then all of a sudden, you hold your
- 11:57Speaker 2: weight to that distance or that time or that measurement.
- 12:00Speaker 2: You hold your entire like like self worth to that
- 12:05Speaker 2: as an athlete at least. And so instead of being like, oh,
- 12:09Speaker 2: if you peb'd every friggin time you went out there,
- 12:12Speaker 2: everyone would do this, right, because you just run off
- 12:15Speaker 2: into infinity until you're throwing to nothing that you're thrown
- 12:19Speaker 2: into space at that point. And so like, I mean,
- 12:22Speaker 2: you think about it in hindsight twenty twenty, isn't it,
- 12:25Speaker 2: But like in the moment, you're like, why am I
- 12:29Speaker 2: not throwing this measurement all the time? And it's like,
- 12:31Speaker 2: because that's your best. So there's a reason at your best. Sure,
- 12:34Speaker 2: you increase your best, but like you got to work
- 12:36Speaker 2: to that. But in your head you go, oh, my gosh,
- 12:39Speaker 2: why am I not write at my best all the time?
- 12:41Speaker 2: Because if you were, everyone would do everyone would do
- 12:44Speaker 2: it all the time, and people wouldn't look up to
- 12:46Speaker 2: you like because anybody could do it.
- 12:49Speaker 1: And especially when you get to this level where you
- 12:51Speaker 1: are the world champion and you have these back to
- 12:53Speaker 1: back wins, it's like you've really excelled at this point
- 12:58Speaker 1: beyond everyone else. So knowing that it's hard not to
- 13:04Speaker 1: want to keep going for more, but there also needs
- 13:07Speaker 1: to be an understanding that it took you your entire
- 13:10Speaker 1: career up to this point to get to this distance.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Yeah, totally, Like that's such a like you don't think
- 13:18Speaker 2: of it like that to you, Like you just said that,
- 13:20Speaker 2: and I'm like, why don't I just go like girl, like, yeah,
- 13:24Speaker 2: it's it's cool now, but like you all this work
- 13:27Speaker 2: got to that. It wasn't like it just happened and
- 13:29Speaker 2: now you can just keep doing it because if it
- 13:33Speaker 2: was like that, it wouldn't have taken you fifteen years
- 13:35Speaker 2: to do it, wouldn't.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I feel as though sometimes when it comes to these
- 13:38Speaker 1: moments where we exceed even our wildest expectations of ourselves,
- 13:42Speaker 1: it feels like it's a fluke, and rather than getting
- 13:45Speaker 1: to a place where you're like, no, like I worked
- 13:48Speaker 1: my ass off, like I earned this distance, or I
- 13:51Speaker 1: earned this time in a marathon, or I earned this promotion.
- 13:54Speaker 1: It's like, no, like one day this thing just happened
- 13:57Speaker 1: to happen, and now it's like a new thing that
- 13:59Speaker 1: can be part of my story.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's so true too. Like I just like
- 14:05Speaker 2: the way you said that. That like when sometimes you
- 14:07Speaker 2: say stuff like this happened last time too, but you
- 14:09Speaker 2: say something like resonates and I'm like, I'm gonna write
- 14:12Speaker 2: that down. I'm like, where's my comb I need my note.
- 14:14Speaker 1: But it wasn't a flukee tase. You worked for that.
- 14:17Speaker 1: You worked for that twenty point seven six. So, like
- 14:21Speaker 1: I said, big purpose of this episode to do some reflecting,
- 14:24Speaker 1: which well we are already knee deep in. So I'm
- 14:27Speaker 1: gonna ask you the first question of the set here.
- 14:30Speaker 1: If you had to choose a theme of the last
- 14:33Speaker 1: three hundred and sixty five days, what theme would you choose?
- 14:38Speaker 2: To me? It kind of it's like a play on
- 14:40Speaker 2: words too, like the struggle to success, right, because there
- 14:43Speaker 2: was a struggle to it, but also I was struggling
- 14:45Speaker 2: and then I succeeded, So it's like kind of how
- 14:48Speaker 2: I feel about both of it, Like there is such
- 14:51Speaker 2: a struggle to success like that, it's like a fight
- 14:56Speaker 2: isn't it. But also I was struggling for like the
- 15:00Speaker 2: beginning like a majority of the year less year, I
- 15:02Speaker 2: would say with like how I was training, and pretty
- 15:05Speaker 2: much the overall my training was wasn't where it was
- 15:08Speaker 2: the previous year, So I wasn't feeling confident going into
- 15:11Speaker 2: like the biggest part of my career, which is Worlds.
- 15:15Speaker 2: But then you know, having it was like four weeks
- 15:19Speaker 2: with my coach of just like true training, like I've
- 15:23Speaker 2: never I think it was like the most locked in
- 15:26Speaker 2: I was I was ever, and I'm pretty sure my
- 15:28Speaker 2: coach as well, Like I think we were both so
- 15:31Speaker 2: locked in to being like forget the struggle, like let's
- 15:35Speaker 2: just go to do the one thing. And then I
- 15:37Speaker 2: think we did it, And like I think that's like
- 15:40Speaker 2: what I would call it, because it's it's like I said,
- 15:42Speaker 2: it's the struggle to the success, but also struggle and
- 15:47Speaker 2: then success, you know what I mean. So, yeah, I
- 15:49Speaker 2: think I'd totally put it there.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I hear you. I think that the thing about
- 15:55Speaker 1: success is success most typically happens when you find confidence, right,
- 16:00Speaker 1: and confidence is gained by confidence, and you get confidence
- 16:05Speaker 1: from putting in the practice. So it's hard when the
- 16:09Speaker 1: reps that you're putting in, the practices and whatnot, they
- 16:11Speaker 1: feel as though they're not going how you want them
- 16:14Speaker 1: to go. But the reality is is that even though
- 16:17Speaker 1: it might not feel like it's hitting in the moment,
- 16:20Speaker 1: you're still doing enough work. You're putting in the reps
- 16:23Speaker 1: to get to a place where you can stand on
- 16:25Speaker 1: your own two feet.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you need to write a book.
- 16:29Speaker 1: It's coming, girl, I'm coming.
- 16:31Speaker 2: I would read it multiple times a year.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Maybe it'll be called Struggle to Success, and then I'll
- 16:37Speaker 1: give you royalties.
- 16:39Speaker 2: That's fine, that's okay. So sometimes you say stuff, but
- 16:43Speaker 2: I'm just like, yes, I can't respond. I'm just like
- 16:46Speaker 2: period like.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Yes, I'm just absorbing. I'm absorbing. So, knowing that your
- 16:51Speaker 1: theme for the year struggle to Success, what would you
- 16:54Speaker 1: say your proudest moment was from twenty twenty three?
- 16:58Speaker 2: Probably record. It was something I've fought for for a
- 17:02Speaker 2: long time, and I think the reason I'm so happy
- 17:06Speaker 2: about it as well is I've always been like someone
- 17:12Speaker 2: who trains further than their where they compete. So where
- 17:17Speaker 2: I was training wasn't exactly screaming you're about to throw
- 17:21Speaker 2: the furthest throw of your life. But I went into
- 17:23Speaker 2: that meet and I told my coach, and I told
- 17:25Speaker 2: my fiancee, and I told my friends, and I told
- 17:27Speaker 2: my mom, I'm gonna feel the National record like I'm
- 17:30Speaker 2: doing it, like I'm feeling it. I'm feeling myself. My
- 17:34Speaker 2: pre meat wasn't good. I still said, it doesn't matter,
- 17:37Speaker 2: like I'm doing this, And I think that's why I
- 17:40Speaker 2: would definitely call it my proudest moment. Worlds is obviously amazing,
- 17:44Speaker 2: but like there's certain things that you hold like dear.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Everyone has that one thing, and I think for me,
- 17:49Speaker 2: the National Record has been that one thing that like
- 17:52Speaker 2: I've just been looking at and being like I want that.
- 17:54Speaker 2: I want my name on the record book. I want
- 17:56Speaker 2: it to say in our and then my name right.
- 18:00Speaker 2: And so I think that was it was like a
- 18:02Speaker 2: really pivotal point I think for me as an athlete
- 18:05Speaker 2: as well.
- 18:07Speaker 1: At the time that I'm gonna get this today, this
- 18:11Speaker 1: is mine. Do you think that was strategic, like a
- 18:16Speaker 1: mental play or was that one hundred percent just simply
- 18:20Speaker 1: how you were feeling It.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Really was just like it was definitely not that just
- 18:27Speaker 2: I know I'm big on manifesting, but there was like
- 18:30Speaker 2: something different about that, Like there was something different where
- 18:33Speaker 2: I remember like feeling it like I felt like that
- 18:37Speaker 2: was gonna happen, Like it wasn't just I'm saying it.
- 18:40Speaker 2: I'm faking it till I make it right. It was
- 18:42Speaker 2: so real to me, And like the Diamond League was
- 18:45Speaker 2: like in the US, I was like, its just all
- 18:49Speaker 2: of it where it all happened. The Diamonague files in
- 18:51Speaker 2: the US. It's run by Nike, my sponsor. I'm doing
- 18:55Speaker 2: a bunch of stuff with them, Like we did all
- 18:57Speaker 2: this stuff and everything for this beauty thing, which is
- 19:01Speaker 2: very me like female athletes, female empowerment. It was this
- 19:04Speaker 2: whole thing, and I just there was just all this
- 19:07Speaker 2: environment that just like even fed more into that, and
- 19:11Speaker 2: I just felt it like it wasn't just like this
- 19:14Speaker 2: this is gonna happen, like where you're just like I'm
- 19:16Speaker 2: manifesting this thing. I like genuinely was like I'm getting it,
- 19:19Speaker 2: Like I told everyone, well, I'm gonna get it. So
- 19:21Speaker 2: like ever and like all the people who this is
- 19:24Speaker 2: how I know I have the right people around me,
- 19:25Speaker 2: they all just said yeap, okay, yep, you are, like
- 19:29Speaker 2: we believe you. Like no one was like well, you
- 19:32Speaker 2: know I didn't get that. Well, have you thrown it
- 19:35Speaker 2: in training? Which is my favorite? And I was like, no,
- 19:38Speaker 2: I hadn't leading up to it, But I felt.
- 19:41Speaker 1: I love this for your most proud more of the
- 19:43Speaker 1: year because it's you being your whole, authentic self and
- 19:48Speaker 1: like showing up to this moment and being so in
- 19:50Speaker 1: alignment and being more than just Chase the athlete, like
- 19:53Speaker 1: identifying with all these other things that make you excited.
- 19:57Speaker 1: When you talked about getting to this place where you
- 20:01Speaker 1: truly believe that this was happening for you and you
- 20:04Speaker 1: were gonna get this record. I feel as though there
- 20:06Speaker 1: are probably people listening to this who have showed up
- 20:09Speaker 1: in some similar fashion to something that they were really
- 20:13Speaker 1: excited about, whether it was an athletic feat or not.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Have you been in a situation where you felt so
- 20:20Speaker 1: strongly like this before and it didn't go how you
- 20:23Speaker 1: had hoped?
- 20:24Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely like that. That's why it's it's so important
- 20:29Speaker 2: to me to like not let those failures in quotes,
- 20:33Speaker 2: as we say, because nothing's really a failure those learning experiences.
- 20:37Speaker 2: But you know what I mean, Like going into Doha
- 20:40Speaker 2: twenty nineteen, which is where I was like a favorite
- 20:42Speaker 2: I had. I think I had the Furthest throw of
- 20:46Speaker 2: the year or second Furthest and I'd won everything and
- 20:50Speaker 2: I I choked, And but I went into that like, oh,
- 20:54Speaker 2: I'm gonna do it, you know, manifesting and pushing it,
- 20:56Speaker 2: and it just didn't happen. But I think what's important
- 20:59Speaker 2: in that moment is not to be like, well, it
- 21:02Speaker 2: just doesn't happen if you don't do it, Like that's
- 21:03Speaker 2: not necessarily true, is it? Like like there's one thing
- 21:07Speaker 2: about like manifesting. But it was also my first major right,
- 21:11Speaker 2: so like I couldn't control the fact that, like there
- 21:15Speaker 2: was nerves I'd never experienced in my life. Like and
- 21:18Speaker 2: I think I've talked to people about that now, like
- 21:21Speaker 2: I'm throwing great, I'm throwing far right now, I've just
- 21:24Speaker 2: one world I threw. I threw one of the Furthest
- 21:27Speaker 2: stores in almost a decade, Like I'm in that zone, right,
- 21:31Speaker 2: But like I've talked to all my friends who are
- 21:33Speaker 2: Olympians and stuff. They're like the minute you walk in though,
- 21:38Speaker 2: and you're at the Olympics, it's different, isn't it, Like
- 21:41Speaker 2: and that's completely what happened. I'd competed against these people
- 21:44Speaker 2: all year and I was like, oh, I'm gonna win.
- 21:47Speaker 2: I'm gonna win. But that moment of my first like
- 21:50Speaker 2: world championship, those nerves and so like, That's why I
- 21:54Speaker 2: think it's good that I had that moment because instead
- 21:56Speaker 2: of being like, wow, I just failed, what I did
- 21:58Speaker 2: was realize, Okay, so now I'm going into my first Olympics,
- 22:02Speaker 2: same thing. But now I've learned from what happened last time,
- 22:05Speaker 2: and now I can use that for something even bigger
- 22:08Speaker 2: and greater and use that.

- 24:15Speaker 1: do you lean into to get through tough hurdle moments?
- 24:19Speaker 1: Like what happened for you in Doha.
- 24:22Speaker 2: I mean in the moment, I can't pretend like I'm
- 24:25Speaker 2: always straight up, can't. I Like, I typically there's definitely
- 24:30Speaker 2: a wobble. There's always like the wobble when you're handleb
- 24:33Speaker 2: our shirt to go, you know, But yeah, I definitely
- 24:36Speaker 2: typically after those moments wobble, I struggle. But then I
- 24:42Speaker 2: think what's good for me is like having the right people.
- 24:46Speaker 2: And I always say this to everyone I talked to.
- 24:48Speaker 2: I was talking to the young athletes too, and I said,
- 24:51Speaker 2: I said, sometimes there's people you need with you that
- 24:53Speaker 2: like you, that tell you the truth, right, And so
- 24:58Speaker 2: I think the good thing about I'm not trying to
- 25:00Speaker 2: hype him up because ugh, but my coach, like, he
- 25:03Speaker 2: always tells me the truth. So like since the beginning
- 25:08Speaker 2: he's told me. If I said, oh, like what about this,
- 25:11Speaker 2: he'd be like, no, it's bad, right, which means that
- 25:14Speaker 2: when he's telling me it's good, I now trust him.
- 25:18Speaker 2: So like in those moments I can turn to him
- 25:20Speaker 2: and be like, ooh that was this, and then whatever
- 25:23Speaker 2: he says, I now trust because I know he's not
- 25:25Speaker 2: gonna lie to me. And that's kind of what I've
- 25:29Speaker 2: done is make sure that the people around me can
- 25:32Speaker 2: support me through those moments. And I think that's what's
- 25:34Speaker 2: been helping me because personally, I have a lot of
- 25:38Speaker 2: weakness in that. I think some people can do it themselves,
- 25:42Speaker 2: which is girl, more power to you, but I struggle
- 25:47Speaker 2: with it, like I definitely need help through those moments
- 25:49Speaker 2: because I have anxiety and stuff like I have anxiety disorder,
- 25:53Speaker 2: so like sometimes small things are huge to me and
- 25:57Speaker 2: stuff like that. But because I surround myself with the
- 25:59Speaker 2: right people and I make sure that I don't surround
- 26:02Speaker 2: myself with people who are yes men or any of that,
- 26:07Speaker 2: I think that that's helped me through a lot of
- 26:08Speaker 2: those moments because I can turn to certain people and
- 26:11Speaker 2: I say, is this happening? And if they'll tell me yes,
- 26:14Speaker 2: if it is, or they'll tell me now you're fine.
- 26:17Speaker 2: And then I go, well, they've never lied to me before.
- 26:19Speaker 2: They've told me when I look shitty in that dress,
- 26:21Speaker 2: you know, so like why would they Why would they
- 26:23Speaker 2: lie to me now? So that's kind of like what's
- 26:25Speaker 2: always been for me. And I know it's different for everyone.
- 26:28Speaker 2: That's it's crazy, but I can't lie and say like
- 26:31Speaker 2: a lot of it's internal for me because it's just
- 26:34Speaker 2: something I've always struggled with.
- 26:36Speaker 1: I appreciate you sharing that, and I think it's super relatable, right,
- 26:39Speaker 1: knowing that sometimes it's just you need someone to tell
- 26:42Speaker 1: you the truth. You need to be like, am I
- 26:44Speaker 1: literally losing my mind? Because when you do have anxiety
- 26:47Speaker 1: or you are dealing with some other sort of mental
- 26:51Speaker 1: health battle on your own time, it can feel difficult
- 26:55Speaker 1: because it's hard to distinguish what is fact versus what
- 26:59Speaker 1: is fixed, whereas other people might not have as much
- 27:02Speaker 1: difficulty doing that. You mentioned that you have been recently
- 27:08Speaker 1: throwing farther and better and really really well. I know
- 27:12Speaker 1: that this month this is coming out in January, this
- 27:15Speaker 1: month you're getting married. You're in like a very high
- 27:18Speaker 1: time for your personal life. Do you think that they
- 27:21Speaker 1: go hand in hand your performance and feeling in a
- 27:25Speaker 1: good place personally?
- 27:27Speaker 2: Oh totally, I'm definitely. Like I'm as much as I
- 27:33Speaker 2: was talking about this before we started, Like the wedding
- 27:35Speaker 2: planning can be stressful and all that, but like there's
- 27:37Speaker 2: like an excitement about it. I'm about to be married
- 27:40Speaker 2: to like an amazing dude. I have great friends now,
- 27:44Speaker 2: I have a great like support system, Like everything is
- 27:48Speaker 2: plays into that, and it's nothing different than what I
- 27:52Speaker 2: had at the beginning of last year. The difference is
- 27:55Speaker 2: I had a bit of an injury, and like every athlete,
- 27:58Speaker 2: I go, but it's only this little injury, like what's wrong,
- 28:01Speaker 2: But like now I'm healthy. I'm sorry I had a
- 28:05Speaker 2: knock on wood athlete thing, but yeah, I have the
- 28:10Speaker 2: same people. But like, everything's just smooth right now. And
- 28:13Speaker 2: I think when when your regular life is smooth, the
- 28:17Speaker 2: athlete life runs a lot better. Yeah, so everything's going smooth,
- 28:22Speaker 2: So I think my training is just doing a lot
- 28:27Speaker 2: better because of it.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I'm all fir smooth sailing. As we move
- 28:31Speaker 1: forward here, we talked about your proudest moment, so now
- 28:35Speaker 1: I've got to ask you about what your most difficult
- 28:38Speaker 1: moment was in the last three sixty five.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's easy. My very first indoor meat and I
- 28:47Speaker 2: think we talked about this last time, where sometimes it's
- 28:49Speaker 2: hard for athletes of any level to distinguish themselves from
- 28:56Speaker 2: who they are outside of athletics and who they are inside.
- 29:00Speaker 2: And I think I really struggled because it was my
- 29:03Speaker 2: first meet I was dealing with like a little a
- 29:07Speaker 2: little injury, and I did really bad. And I remember
- 29:13Speaker 2: before the meet they asked me to do this stage
- 29:16Speaker 2: thing and I kept saying, well, I have time to
- 29:17Speaker 2: warm up. And it's a long story, but turns out
- 29:21Speaker 2: I went and did this presentation and I had to
- 29:23Speaker 2: go back and I had like two throws to warm up,
- 29:25Speaker 2: and instead of rolling with it like I normally would
- 29:29Speaker 2: because I had a lot of negative things going on,
- 29:32Speaker 2: I immediately was like, well I didn't get a warm up,
- 29:34Speaker 2: this is happening, and it was just it's that stack.
- 29:36Speaker 2: You keep stacking this thing on top of you. And
- 29:39Speaker 2: I got all stressed, and I remember the meat was
- 29:41Speaker 2: over and I called my coach and I was crying
- 29:44Speaker 2: and he just kind of listened to me because I'm
- 29:45Speaker 2: just sitting there just they didn't let me warm up,
- 29:49Speaker 2: just complaining, whining, not really being myself as a person
- 29:52Speaker 2: or an athlete. And it was that moment where like
- 29:56Speaker 2: it's that mix where like I was so disappointed myself
- 30:00Speaker 2: as an athlete, I then forget that, like I'm outside
- 30:04Speaker 2: of that, and it just brought me down as a
- 30:06Speaker 2: person for like a month, So my training was struggling.
- 30:11Speaker 2: I was a lot more of a bad athlete in
- 30:14Speaker 2: training because I was just in a mood I was
- 30:16Speaker 2: I was a bad fiance, like just that one little
- 30:20Speaker 2: meet made me like not happy for like way too
- 30:26Speaker 2: long for something so little and so small, and it
- 30:30Speaker 2: was that I think it was that gray area where
- 30:33Speaker 2: you lose yourself. And so the one mess up I'm
- 30:38Speaker 2: a world champion I failed, carried into my personal life.
- 30:42Speaker 2: So I'm being a bad friend. I'm being a bad
- 30:44Speaker 2: athlete to my coach. Like I just remember being rady
- 30:47Speaker 2: with my coach for like way longer than normal, Like
- 30:51Speaker 2: sometimes you have ratty days. Everyone does, like, yeah, it's fine,
- 30:54Speaker 2: but every day, every training session just seemed like that's
- 30:58Speaker 2: not what I need to do. No, no, you know,
- 31:00Speaker 2: like and just like I said, not being because that
- 31:06Speaker 2: carried into everything and it was just it was just
- 31:10Speaker 2: not a good space to be. And but like I said,
- 31:11Speaker 2: I have the right people around me. Instead of like
- 31:15Speaker 2: adding to the negativity, they really helped me work through it.
- 31:18Speaker 2: But I think that was probably the worst time, and
- 31:21Speaker 2: that was probably like February of last year. And I
- 31:24Speaker 2: have got in that space again because I've become aware
- 31:27Speaker 2: of it. But it was just a long time of
- 31:30Speaker 2: being kind of a crap person.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's understandable. Right when something goes not
- 31:38Speaker 1: as we hoped, we aren't going to be ecstatic about it,
- 31:43Speaker 1: But then you have the opportunity to reflect on it
- 31:47Speaker 1: moving forward, so you can decide how you want to
- 31:49Speaker 1: react the next time something similar goes down. So having
- 31:53Speaker 1: been removed from that situation in particular for quite some time, now,
- 31:58Speaker 1: what would you say the biggest learning was in reflection
- 32:02Speaker 1: of this quote unquote Braddy time.
- 32:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I think leading into outdoors. Then after kind of
- 32:08Speaker 2: realizing it through the indoor season, like what happened, I
- 32:11Speaker 2: was able to like separate that. So like I would
- 32:13Speaker 2: have a bad meat or like bad to me, I
- 32:16Speaker 2: would say me, but then I would I brought back
- 32:20Speaker 2: the goldfish, didn't I? I put it away and then
- 32:22Speaker 2: I'm back to Okay. That just means train harder, That
- 32:26Speaker 2: just means this, I don't carry that into my day
- 32:29Speaker 2: to day and stuff like that. So I think that
- 32:31Speaker 2: really helped. It was like a shitty moment, but like
- 32:35Speaker 2: it carried into being like like we said, if you
- 32:39Speaker 2: can learn from it, it makes it worth it. But
- 32:42Speaker 2: if you can't, then it kind of ruins it sad.
- 32:46Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I totally hear you. So the next thing here,
- 32:50Speaker 1: are you a swift ye? Yes? Or now?
- 32:53Speaker 2: Well like Taylor Swift? Yeah?
- 32:55Speaker 1: What else would swift bed.
- 32:58Speaker 2: I used to be and choose a country singer?
- 33:01Speaker 1: Ah okay, a little shade coming from Chase Eely on
- 33:05Speaker 1: Taylor Swifts. Well, as you know Taylor Swift Times person
- 33:09Speaker 1: of the Year. If Chase Eely had to choose a
- 33:12Speaker 1: person of the year, who is it?
- 33:15Speaker 2: When I get these questions all the time, right and
- 33:17Speaker 2: I'm in this podcast, what I'm trying to think is like,
- 33:20Speaker 2: go outside of athletics, but your brain immediately goes, oh,
- 33:23Speaker 2: I'm doing this thing and I'm this thing. And that's
- 33:25Speaker 2: the exactly what I'm talking about, where it's like instead
- 33:27Speaker 2: of me being able to be like think outside, all
- 33:30Speaker 2: I'm thinking is like what athlete? And it's like just
- 33:34Speaker 2: back out of it for five seconds, and I just
- 33:37Speaker 2: never can, like because you know, it'd be like my
- 33:40Speaker 2: mom like no, Like I want to be real. But
- 33:43Speaker 2: it's just so hard sometimes because I'm like, who am I?
- 33:47Speaker 1: Well, because you're immersed in it, like you're literally immersed
- 33:50Speaker 1: in your athleticism every single day. It's a huge part
- 33:52Speaker 1: of how you show up every day. It's your job, right,
- 33:55Speaker 1: and when you spend a third of your life doing
- 33:57Speaker 1: what you do for work, a third of your life
- 33:59Speaker 1: sleeping only leaves one other third. So in between those
- 34:02Speaker 1: two thirds of when you're awake, it's more often than
- 34:05Speaker 1: not that something you're gonna think about is gonna have
- 34:07Speaker 1: to do with your athleticism.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Okay, I'm gonna let you marinate on that for early night,
- 34:11Speaker 1: but I'm gonna have you come back to it please.
- 34:14Speaker 2: I need a minute.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Okay, what is something you want to do more of
- 34:18Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four?
- 34:19Speaker 2: I feel like I don't let my I don't want
- 34:24Speaker 2: to say audience because that sounds like I have an audience,
- 34:27Speaker 2: but like the people that like follow me and want
- 34:30Speaker 2: to know about me. I feel like I don't show
- 34:32Speaker 2: enough of my personal life. So I think I've been
- 34:35Speaker 2: talking to my fiance about that a lot, Like I
- 34:37Speaker 2: really want to do more stuff to show people who
- 34:43Speaker 2: I am as a person outside of stuff like this,
- 34:45Speaker 2: which I think usually like people receive me really well
- 34:49Speaker 2: and stuff like this, but I'm like, well, maybe they
- 34:52Speaker 2: could see me in the day to day too, and
- 34:53Speaker 2: I could show them, Like, you know, I don't just
- 34:56Speaker 2: throw metal ball for a living, so that's definitely something
- 34:58Speaker 2: I want to do.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Why do you think that's important to you?
- 35:01Speaker 2: I just think, like it's just like when I was
- 35:03Speaker 2: talking to those young athletes and all of them were
- 35:07Speaker 2: it was so cute, and there was like this competitiveness
- 35:10Speaker 2: with them, and it was just this like I saw
- 35:12Speaker 2: myself and a lot of them, and all I could
- 35:15Speaker 2: think was, like, how much I struggle with We talked
- 35:18Speaker 2: about this a lot the last time, but how much
- 35:20Speaker 2: I struggle with who I am outside of being an athlete.
- 35:24Speaker 2: And I've always struggled with that, like my whole life,
- 35:26Speaker 2: because I've always been this competitive kid. And I think
- 35:28Speaker 2: it's important to show people like who you are outside
- 35:32Speaker 2: of sport, that like, oh, like you can you can
- 35:36Speaker 2: do this, you can have a glass of wine and
- 35:39Speaker 2: it's not the end of the day. You know, Like
- 35:41Speaker 2: you can do these things. And I think that's really
- 35:44Speaker 2: important for everyone to see that, like you, you can
- 35:48Speaker 2: be somebody outside of what your main job is or whatever.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Or just of like what people expect of you.
- 35:56Speaker 2: If people don't listen to this stuff, if people just
- 35:58Speaker 2: see me like on Instagram, for since I don't think
- 36:01Speaker 2: they know like me as much as they could or
- 36:05Speaker 2: should as much as I don't show them enough of me.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Okay, so this is an interesting follow up question me
- 36:12Speaker 1: telling myself my question is already interesting.
- 36:14Speaker 2: So interesting?
- 36:16Speaker 1: What is your assumed perception that they think of you?
- 36:21Speaker 2: Like?
- 36:21Speaker 1: What do you think your audience thinks of you?
- 36:24Speaker 2: I think everyone knows like that I'm a bit more
- 36:26Speaker 2: down to earth for sure, but like, I don't know.
- 36:30Speaker 2: I think I hope they think I'm like D DTE
- 36:36Speaker 2: and funny, you know, I hope.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Pause pause, I'm sorry, maybe I'm not millennial enough.
- 36:43Speaker 2: What's DT? Down to earth? You know what I'm talking about?
- 36:47Speaker 1: Girl?
- 36:47Speaker 2: Period?
- 36:48Speaker 1: I dt F, don't don't wait?
- 36:53Speaker 2: Delete re whyry over the camera dead?
- 37:08Speaker 1: I oh, this is the best recording. I've done it
- 37:12Speaker 1: a long time. I was, what's D And why have
- 37:17Speaker 1: I never heard this phrase before?
- 37:19Speaker 2: Oh? My god, I know that they think you DT?
- 37:22Speaker 2: I hope. So I was talking about this with someone
- 37:26Speaker 2: I did, like stuff with kids and stuff, and they're like,
- 37:30Speaker 2: it's so weird because some of the n actual athletes
- 37:32Speaker 2: tend to be a bit more stuck up and whatnot.
- 37:34Speaker 2: But like, I'm like running around the kids, they're like
- 37:37Speaker 2: race me. I was like, let's go. Like I was like,
- 37:41Speaker 2: you best get on the line, and I'm not holding back,
- 37:43Speaker 2: you know.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Like yeah, what I love personally about you and your
- 37:46Speaker 1: personality is like, yes, you are bold, which lack definitely
- 37:50Speaker 1: comes through on your social But I love seeing the
- 37:53Speaker 1: little things that make Chase Chase. Like I love how
- 37:56Speaker 1: when we get on the podcast and you're like, well,
- 37:58Speaker 1: I was just playing video games for an hour where
- 38:00Speaker 1: we did this, or you're talking to me about like
- 38:02Speaker 1: how you're really excited to get your dress tomorrow. Like
- 38:05Speaker 1: these are the things that make Chase like a holistic
- 38:07Speaker 1: human beyond whatever it is that we see on Instagram.
- 38:10Speaker 1: And to your point, I do think that it's really
- 38:13Speaker 1: awesome to have the opportunity to share that side of
- 38:15Speaker 1: yourself with these people.
- 38:16Speaker 2: People know it and hear it and see it. But like,
- 38:18Speaker 2: I really want it to come from me, you know
- 38:20Speaker 2: what I mean?
- 38:21Speaker 1: Yeah, totally.
- 38:22Speaker 2: So I think it's I think people know I'm cool,
- 38:25Speaker 2: but like I want I want, I want me to
- 38:28Speaker 2: tell them I'm cool.
- 38:29Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, Chase Eely DT. That's going
- 38:32Speaker 1: to be the title.
- 38:34Speaker 2: That be my book title. Episode.
- 38:36Speaker 1: There you go, there you go. Aside from your pending nuptials,
- 38:41Speaker 1: what else excites you right now?
- 38:43Speaker 2: I'm really excited for this season, Like I haven't been
- 38:46Speaker 2: excited this excited first season in a long time, like
- 38:49Speaker 2: without a lot of nerves. So I'm excited for the Olympics.
- 38:52Speaker 2: I don't want to be Olympic champion. Very excited.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, the Olympics are coming in hot Chase.
- 38:59Speaker 1: So here.
- 39:01Speaker 2: It was like they kept saying, like, however many months
- 39:04Speaker 2: and now it was like nine months, and I said,
- 39:06Speaker 2: come again, it's how.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Many Well I'm so excited for you too. I'm gonna
- 39:11Speaker 1: give you one last chance to tell me if you
- 39:13Speaker 1: can think of anyone that you would name for the
- 39:15Speaker 1: person of the year.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Who would you? How about I turn this around? How
- 39:19Speaker 2: about that?
- 39:20Speaker 1: Look at how empowered she feels now, like, look who
- 39:23Speaker 1: the host is? Huh. I'm gonna say this one of
- 39:26Speaker 1: my people of the year. I think there are a few,
- 39:29Speaker 1: but I'm gonna go with Ali Kreeger. Ali Kreeger is
- 39:33Speaker 1: in the middle of a renaissance for her being just
- 39:37Speaker 1: getting out of a marriage. She had her retirement season.
- 39:42Speaker 1: She played unbelievably. I loved, like been loving every single
- 39:46Speaker 1: brand partnership she does, Like, I'm just team Kreeger, so
- 39:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with Ali Creeker as Person of the Year.
- 39:53Speaker 2: That's not fair. You just like immediately, just like busted
- 39:56Speaker 2: out with that.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Well, Chase, always a pleasure. I love sitting down with you.
- 40:01Speaker 1: I have so much fun whenever we get to connect.
- 40:04Speaker 1: I'm hoping that I'm gonna be there cheering you on
- 40:06Speaker 1: IRL comparis. But regardless, I couldn't be happier for all
- 40:11Speaker 1: of your continued success. For those of the hurdlers that
