- 0:12Hello friends. Yep, you guessed it.
- 0:15It's shown here and it is a Friday and you've made it to the
- 0:19end of the week. Well done, you.
- 0:23I hope that the weekend ahead has filled with some promise in
- 0:26our part of the world. It's even a long weekend to look
- 0:28forward to, which is pretty spectacular.
- 0:32But wherever you are and whatever you have got planned
- 0:35for today and the days ahead, I'm glad that you have found
- 0:39this moment to join me, to read Assam together.
- 0:42And today we begin the final of the five books of Psalms,
- 0:48reading some 107. This is a sum of praise as the
- 0:53Psalmist looks back over Israel's long history and all
- 0:57the times where Yahweh has saved them from all sorts of people
- 1:01who are trying to oppress them. This is a very grateful psalmist
- 1:05praising a very big and faithful God.
- 1:09Not a bad way for us to end the week as we reflect on all the
- 1:14times that God has been faithful to us.
- 1:18Providing answers, providing friends, providing love,
- 1:23providing forgiveness, providing an identity when we weren't
- 1:27quite sure how we fit in. Yep, we have a very good God.
- 1:32So this Friday, let us put down all those things that are
- 1:36weighing us down or drawing us forward or casting us back.
- 1:41And let us be here, present in this moment.
- 1:43Holy Spirit, come they praise for you overflow from our heart,
- 1:52from the tips of our toes all the way up to the hairs on our
- 1:55head, as we sing and share this sum together in our hearts.
- 2:03What more is there to do other than to share the same?
- 2:08Psalm 107. Give thanks to the Lord, for he
- 2:23is good. His faithful love endures
- 2:26forever. Has the Lord redeemed you?
- 2:30Then speak out. Tell others he has redeemed you
- 2:33from your enemies. For he has gathered his exiles
- 2:37from many lands from east and West, from North and South.
- 2:42Some wondered in the wilderness, lost and homeless, hungry and
- 2:46thirsty. There nearly died.
- 2:48Lord Help, they cried in their trouble and he rescued them from
- 2:53their distress. He led them straight to safety,
- 2:57to a city where they could live. Let them praise the Lord for his
- 3:01great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.
- 3:06For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good
- 3:10things. Some sat in darkness and deepest
- 3:14gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery.
- 3:18They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the council of
- 3:21the Most High. That is why he broke them with
- 3:25hard labour. They fell, and no one was there
- 3:28to help them. Lord, help.
- 3:31They cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their
- 3:35distress. He led them from the darkness
- 3:37and deepest gloom. He snapped their chains.
- 3:41Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful
- 3:46things he has done for them. For he broke down their prison
- 3:50gates of bronze. He cut apart their bars of iron.
- 3:56Some were fools. They rebelled and suffered for
- 3:59their sins. They couldn't stand the thought
- 4:02of food, and they were knocking on death's door.
- 4:05Lord help, they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from
- 4:11their distress. He sent out His word and healed
- 4:15them, snatching them from the door of death.
- 4:19Let them praise the Lord for His great love and for the wonderful
- 4:23things He has done for them. Let them offer sacrifices of
- 4:27Thanksgiving and sing joyfully about his glorious acts.
- 4:32Some went off to sea and ships, plying the trade routes of the
- 4:36world. They too, observed the Lord's
- 4:39power and action, his impressive works.
- 4:42On the deepest seas he spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up
- 4:48the waves. Their ships were tossed to the
- 4:51heavens and plunged again to the depths.
- 4:54The sailors cringed in terror. They reeled and staggered like
- 4:58drunkards, and were at their wits.
- 5:00End. Lord help, they cried in their
- 5:03trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
- 5:08He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves.
- 5:12What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them
- 5:16safely into harbour. Let them praise the Lord for his
- 5:20great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.
- 5:24Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and
- 5:28before the leaders of the nation.
- 5:32He changed his rivers into deserts and springs of water
- 5:36into dry, thirsty land. He turns the fruitful land into
- 5:41salty wastelands because of the wickedness of those who live
- 5:45there. But he also turns deserts into
- 5:49pools of water, the dry land into springs of water.
- 5:55He brings the hungry to settle there and to build their cities.
- 6:00They sow their fields, plant their vineyards and harvest
- 6:04their bumper crops. How he blesses them.
- 6:09They raised large families there, and their herds of
- 6:13livestock increase when they decrease their number and become
- 6:18impoverished through oppression, trouble and sorrow.
- 6:22The Lord pours contempt on their princes, causing them to wander
- 6:27in trackless wastelands, but he rescues the poor from trouble
- 6:32and increases their families like flocks of sheep.
- 6:36The godly will see these things and be glad, while the wicked
- 6:40has struck silent. Those who are wise will take all
- 6:45this to heart. They will see in our history the
- 6:49faithful love of the Lord. You are a faithful God.
- 7:04You are present when we find ourselves in the darkest
- 7:08valleys, when we but our heads up against brick walls and find
- 7:14there's no way out. There you are, with your arms
- 7:19open wide. You know exactly what it's like,
- 7:23Lord, to be at the bottom of the deepest, darkest valley.
- 7:28That's where you placed yourself, so that you could be
- 7:31there to welcome us and to love us.
- 7:35And as this Psalmist writes again and again to deliver us,
- 7:40to give us hope, to give us joy, even when we have no right to
- 7:45feel joyful, you save us, and you remind us that you have won
- 7:52the war and you hold us safely in the palm of your hand.
- 7:58You are a mighty mighty God and we just fall before you in
- 8:04worship and we pray all of this and the saving name of Jesus.
- 8:13Ah man.
