- 0:01Do you actually have to be on cocaine
- 0:21A great day, dirty. Lazy boy.
- 0:33What's up everybody, you're listening to yet another edition
- 0:36of Cocaine Willie, the official K state representative on the
- 0:39college huddle. I am your commissioner Bob
- 0:41Trollsby. And as always, I'm not joined by
- 0:44my Co host actually this time. So the good chef Andre Napier
- 0:47and fireball Matt Margosini are not here.
- 0:50But I am joined by the Colorado Buffaloes representative on the
- 0:54college huddle. David talks Buffs is joining us
- 0:57for his first, his second time on the pod, so first time as a
- 1:01recurring guest. David, how are you doing and
- 1:03what are what are your Thanksgiving plans this week?
- 1:06Oh man, just watch some football and just try and get out of this
- 1:10alter ego that I've become now. David cries Buffs.
- 1:13That's what I've been all season, man, this has been a
- 1:15season. Another season from hell.
- 1:17But thanks for having me back on Mr. Trollsby.
- 1:19Can't wait to talk about it. Of course, of course, before we
- 1:23get into the episode, this beer crack is brought to you by
- 1:26Auntie Maze Parlor, located at 616 N 12th St. in the heart of
- 1:31Aggieville. Auntie Maze has been in business
- 1:33for 51 years. They are an absolute must visit
- 1:36destination in Aggieville on game days and school nights
- 1:40alike if you are going to be in town for the game this weekend.
- 1:43If you are a Buffs fan making the trip to Manhattan.
- 1:46First trip since what, 2920? Ten Whenever that last trip was.
- 1:52Make the trip if you are. If you don't have Thanksgiving
- 1:55plans, stop by Auntie Maze. It's a great bar dive bar feel.
- 1:59Probably similar to a couple of different places I've been to in
- 2:02Boulder that I would definitely recommend.
- 2:04But definitely stop by. Be sure to tell them Cocaine
- 2:08Willie sent you. They've got comedy, live music
- 2:10and all sorts of other events most nights, but basically every
- 2:14single week, a lot of stuff with Thanksgiving kind of throwing a
- 2:18wrench in any event plans that they have.
- 2:20But next week, next Thursday is the 35th annual Christmas
- 2:24lighting. Dirty Spoons is going to be
- 2:26playing at the Christmas lighting.
- 2:27So a lot of good stuff going on at the Parlor, but 616 N 12th
- 2:32Street, right in the heart of Aggieville.
- 2:34Be sure to tell them cocaine really sent you if you're
- 2:37stopping by. David I, I have to, I have to
- 2:41talk just big picture here. So this is the 67th meeting
- 2:46between Colorado and K State over the course of the last I, I
- 2:49guess hundreds, 100 some years. K State's won four of the last
- 2:53six dating back to 2006. Yes, I cherry picked that stack.
- 2:58I could go back a little bit further, but it would wouldn't
- 3:00be as fun for me to do that. Deion Sanders is 16 and 20 now
- 3:07in his last three seasons at the helm in Boulder, Co Currently
- 3:11three and eight this year after a nine and four campaign last
- 3:14season and is one in seven in Big 12 play.
- 3:17But I want to talk about the offseason because living in
- 3:21Denver myself, I hear altitude sports radio, I listen to the
- 3:25sports talk in the area. So I hear a lot about what goes
- 3:28on at CU. But Deion gets a contract
- 3:32extension, making him the 14th highest paid college football
- 3:37coach. He's only 25 grand, 25 grand
- 3:40behind Lane Kiffin currently, who's in 10th place.
- 3:44He got Shidor and Travis into the Ring of Honor with jerseys
- 3:48retired, which is also just unheard of.
- 3:51There are multiple other guys that that probably should be on
- 3:54that list ahead of them. Not to say that Travis isn't
- 3:58deserving. He's absolutely deserving as a
- 4:00Heisman winner. But Shidor, you know, I have my
- 4:03own issues with that. Maybe even as even as an
- 4:05outsider looking at and then Dionne has some of these issues
- 4:09with his health. We hear about.
- 4:10He's spending his offseason in Texas for the most part.
- 4:13He has about with bladder cancer that he survives, which is
- 4:16amazing, but more surgeries to remove blood clots.
- 4:20Just felt like a really weird offseason that has played into
- 4:23what's been a really strange season, even from, you know, 3
- 4:27quarterbacks getting different starts throughout the season so
- 4:30far. Wins against Delaware, Wyoming
- 4:33and Iowa State with the storming of the field against Iowa State.
- 4:36Just a weird, a weird season across the board.
- 4:39I, I, I'm going to open it up with that and tee it off and I'm
- 4:43going to let you just run. What's the vibe around the
- 4:46program in Boulder right now? This was a bad acid trip, man.
- 4:52This whole year. Just a terrible bad acid trip,
- 4:56man. If you can think about it going
- 4:58wrong, man, it pretty much has man, where do I even start?
- 5:03I'll, I'll say this. When you're paid the way that
- 5:07you're paid now, the expectation is that you will build off of a
- 5:13nine and four season, not necessarily repeating 9:00 and
- 5:174:00, but you know, the foundation continues to be laid.
- 5:21And that's our thing. Like I'd see you, you know, in
- 5:232016, we had a 10 win season. Follow that up with handful
- 5:27losing seasons, you know, we're never able to build on success
- 5:32for whatever reason. And I will say the reasons that
- 5:38the program isn't building on success right now are different
- 5:42than what it was the reasons maybe in 2017 or you know, in
- 5:472021, right? Like different.
- 5:51I'll say this and Coach Prime is admitted to.
- 5:55We missed on a lot of guys in the portal, OK, We're not
- 6:00vending these guys characters at all, man.
- 6:02Not at all to the the guys that we dropped the two biggest bags
- 6:05on this year. Starting quarterback assumed
- 6:08coming in here to Kane Salter and interior defensive lineman
- 6:13from Alabama, Jahim Otis, dude. Jahim Otis can barely get more
- 6:16than 5 snaps on a decimated defensive line this year, dude.
- 6:22And yeah, this guy's making big bucks.
- 6:26Then when you go again, you pay Kane Salter.
- 6:28Dude, this guy's crying, sulking when things aren't going his
- 6:33way. He wasn't even named A-Team
- 6:34captain after being here since January.
- 6:36So that was a red flag that he just wasn't handling himself
- 6:41like the face of a program should as a fifth year senior.
- 6:45And I'll say this man, too, you know, I was like, Kane Salter
- 6:50had a great year in 2023. And the fan of me is like, dude,
- 6:54oh dude, his team just sucked in 24.
- 6:56Like, of course the, you know, the stats weren't that great,
- 6:59but I'm going to disregard that. It's one thing when I say that
- 7:04as a YouTube. It's another thing when clearly
- 7:07that's what the recruiting staff thought as well.
- 7:09They're like, team just wasn't that good, man, whatever.
- 7:12Look at 2023. Look at 2023 and it was a
- 7:19disaster, man. We threw away all that film.
- 7:22Maybe the reason they weren't good in 2024 was because he
- 7:25sucks and that's what we found out.
- 7:29So anyways, where do I go from here?
- 7:37It's been a disaster ever since. Coach Prime missed months and
- 7:40months and a lot of the spring portal, the summer recruiting,
- 7:44it was left up to the staff, the coaching staff, the recruiting
- 7:47staff. And I think what we realized, at
- 7:50least in my opinion, you might have to edit this out, but we
- 7:54got a bunch of lazy motherfuckers on this staff,
- 7:57man, that don't know how to do their job when they're going
- 8:00Coach Primes out of here. Man, what a slap in the face.
- 8:02Dude. This guy's battling cancer.
- 8:04And these, these staff members and these players do just lay
- 8:09consistent eggs after eggs after eggs, dude.
- 8:13These guys are an embarrassment. Dude.
- 8:15Usually something like this when your head coach says, you know
- 8:18what, I'm going to remove my bladder instead of just getting
- 8:22chemotherapy because I want to be back to coach.
- 8:25OK, you can criticize prime for a he's made some bad mistakes as
- 8:30a coach, man, he is not a perfect coach at all.
- 8:32No, no, no, no, no, But I can genuinely tell you he loves
- 8:38doing this job like he loves being a coach.
- 8:42And to just get this kind of hell no, dude, it was like a
- 8:47flaccid like not even blue balls, man, like I was.
- 8:51It was just a flaccid football season, dude.
- 8:53None of it made any sense. I've never seen against
- 8:56Delaware. You're two games in right and
- 9:00you're you're doing a a quarterback musical chairs
- 9:04against Delaware and you know. Not even that, but you bring 2
- 9:09quarterbacks to Big 12 Media Days, which I think I think the
- 9:13last time that happened, it was actually K State that did it and
- 9:17it was when we had Alex Dalton and Skyler Thompson in 20.
- 9:21It it was Snyder's last season. I think yes, yes.
- 9:26And K State fans all know how that turned out.
- 9:28It was it was not good. Yes, and.
- 9:33Again, he wasn't named a captain.
- 9:36There was just never any plan. There was never any plan for
- 9:39Julian Lewis. And I think like that's the
- 9:41theme, dude. And there was no plan like Pat
- 9:44Shermer bringing in Kaden Salter, dude.
- 9:48This guy didn't fit the offense at all.
- 9:50And he didn't change the offense to fit his skills whatsoever.
- 9:54So it was just a bad fit all around.
- 9:57Coaches, players, the vision, dude, everything was just so
- 10:01broken this year. And I think like, but coming off
- 10:05of a nine and four season, one that we felt really proud of a
- 10:08Heisman winner, they're like really the only two things that
- 10:13I can be happy about is that we saw improvement with the
- 10:16offensive line and we finally got to see hopefully what you
- 10:21know, can come in the future with Julian Lewis at
- 10:23quarterback. But that all hinges on Coach
- 10:25Prime making right hires, dude. And I think that he's hired a
- 10:30lot of guys that I've been comfortable in this role, in
- 10:32these roles. It's one thing for Coach Prime,
- 10:35dude, not to. He's sick.
- 10:38All these different things, not hitting the recruiting trail
- 10:40super hard. All these other dudes that he
- 10:42hired, dude, they're just sitting back on vacation to
- 10:46fishing like their Coach Prime. That's my issue, dude.
- 10:50None of these other guys are are taking this role seriously.
- 10:53Like their career and their livelihood depend on it, dude.
- 10:56You don't have enough hunger, dude.
- 10:58They're treating this thing like Coach Snoop, like, you know, I'm
- 11:00going to give it my all. But you know, at the end of the
- 11:03day, dude, I'm still Pat Shermer.
- 11:04I coached 20 years in the NFL. I'm totally fine and I'm still
- 11:06Warren Sapp. You know, the defensive line was
- 11:08atrocious this year. But hey, you know, I'm a I'm a
- 11:11Hall of Famer. I got money, whatever.
- 11:15You know, I'm Coach Prime's buddy from, you know, his high
- 11:18school coaching days. I'm just happy to be here, dude.
- 11:21You got a lot of guys that are happy to be here and not a lot
- 11:24of guys fed up with losing that hate to lose.
- 11:28And word is is that the staff is going to get blown out.
- 11:33We'll see what happens after Kansas State.
- 11:39I mean, it's not something he's been afraid to do in the past
- 11:42because you see in the first season he switched play callers
- 11:45halfway through the season. So I, I would almost have the
- 11:48expectation Pat Shermer's gone, Warren, maybe Warren Sapp, but
- 11:53definitely expecting some, some big changes there.
- 11:56I, I want to talk about the offense big picture now, now
- 11:59that we mentioned Pat Shermer a little bit, but this is a far
- 12:03cry from from the offense we saw the past two years.
- 12:06Wish adore at quarterback and Travis Hunter involved in the
- 12:09wide receiving game, averaging 21 1/2 points per game.
- 12:13That's 102nd nationally, 300 and 29329 yards per game.
- 12:18That's 104th nationally, 4.8 yards per play.
- 12:22That's good for 108th nationally, 87.8 in red zone
- 12:26scoring percentage. That's 45th nationally,
- 12:28surprisingly enough. And then Pat Shermer is still
- 12:32the primary play caller in Boulder.
- 12:34But. But my question is, what's been
- 12:35the biggest ingredient in Colorado's regression?
- 12:38Is it strictly a change in personnel when you lose that
- 12:43core in that leadership of Chador and Travis who and and
- 12:47multiple other guys that went to the NFL with the attrition at
- 12:50key positions there from last year to this year?
- 12:53Is it more of a problem of leadership and play calling?
- 12:56You kind of alluded to it with coaching and maybe you've got
- 12:59Pat Shermer, some of these other guys going out fishing while
- 13:02Coach Prime's going through through cancer rehabilitation.
- 13:05Just tell me what what's been the biggest ingredient to that
- 13:07regression in in the offensive production?
- 13:10Well, let's talk about the lack of leadership in the room.
- 13:15I think again, retaining Coach Shermer do is just horrible this
- 13:19year. But what?
- 13:21Yeah, let's talk about the lack of leadership.
- 13:26You lost a ton of receiving production.
- 13:29You know 3 wide receivers drafted.
- 13:32Think Will Shepherd's now on the Packers 53 or something like
- 13:36that. So you you lose 4 pro wide
- 13:38receivers, you lose Shidor, who's now starting for the
- 13:41Browns, and of course Travis Hunter.
- 13:46This is what happens though, dude, when you recruit small
- 13:51numbers and those guys don't come up in the culture because
- 13:56we're missing a ton of key positions that need to be filled
- 13:59through the transfer portal. But all these guys are new,
- 14:02dude. All these guys are new outside
- 14:05of Jordan Seaton essentially. And you know, you can only be a
- 14:08leader so much as the offensive lineman.
- 14:12And again, coach prime out of quote today.
- 14:16Well, you got to look at the numbers.
- 14:17You recruit 30 guys and then you know 15 are gone in the next two
- 14:20years. Well, you recruit 10 guys and
- 14:23five guys are gone in the next, you know, two years.
- 14:26So then where is your foundation of leadership?
- 14:31And again, I think that with having a, you know, a couple
- 14:37small poor recruiting classes in terms of, you know, numbers and
- 14:42not recruiting positions out of high school every single year,
- 14:47it just became another transient team without really any
- 14:52identity. And when you're new again, you
- 14:54would love to think that a fifth year senior quarterback could
- 14:57come in here and be that guy. I would think so.
- 15:00But when you're not vetting who he is or why Liberty was happy
- 15:04to get off of them, this is what happens.
- 15:08So there was no accountability, dude.
- 15:10And one thing that was so disgusting was against Iowa
- 15:14State Coach Prime's first ranked victory since the the first game
- 15:18against TCU few years ago. We hit a bye week and Omari
- 15:24Miller and Joseph Williams show up late, dude.
- 15:27They get suspended for the next game coming off the bye week.
- 15:32And so when you have some of your most talented players
- 15:36coming off of their biggest win, like with that stuff happening,
- 15:42you got a bunch of guys that aren't taking this thing
- 15:44seriously that are just happy to be there and you lack player
- 15:47accountability. Dude, the coaches can only do so
- 15:50much. I'll give them that much.
- 15:52You know, the players got to want it too.
- 15:55And I think again, it's cool, like I understand you got to
- 15:59live in in the portal, right? But you can't build your
- 16:03foundation on the transfer portal.
- 16:06And essentially that's what we had to do because we recruited
- 16:12small numbers over the last couple years.
- 16:15And now we're kind of in a spot again where Coach Prime was at
- 16:20taking over in 2023. We're going to have to bring in
- 16:25like 50 new players and will we even fill the full scholarship
- 16:30amount? We didn't this year.
- 16:31We had 75 scholarship players. That doesn't tell you that's a
- 16:34lazy on the recruiting staff. I don't know what does.
- 16:37That's that's crazy, especially with 105 person roster limit
- 16:41that you can now have now and and effectively all those guys
- 16:44can be scholarship athletes that that that's definitely says a
- 16:48lot there looking at the offensive line 104th nationally
- 16:53in offensive efficiency. Oh, we've got we've got fireball
- 16:56Matt here. He's he's he made it.
- 17:00How you? Doing Matt.
- 17:02I'm good, I'm good. Glad to be on.
- 17:05Glad to be on indeed offensive line there. 104th nationally in
- 17:10offensive efficiency and 110th in rushing, which is what I
- 17:13really want to hone in on here. Currently Colorado's 124th
- 17:19nationally of 136 teams and average sacks allowed per game.
- 17:2336 total sacks allowed through 11 games, 98th and average
- 17:28rushing yards per game, and both in sacks and rushing yardage
- 17:32yardage. The numbers seem to indicate
- 17:34that Colorado's offensive line issues that we've seen through
- 17:37the course of the last two or three years now, they've only
- 17:40persisted, if not gotten worse in 2025.
- 17:44And that's despite having a guy like Jordan Seton on the
- 17:46offensive line. It it, it feels like maybe
- 17:49there's lack of gelling or cohesion really around Jordan
- 17:52Seaton at some of those other positions.
- 17:54But what would you say have been the biggest glaring flaws with
- 17:56the offensive line this year? Yeah, the the offensive line is
- 17:59weird because, yeah, as you pointed out, like the numbers
- 18:02don't exactly point to an improvement.
- 18:05But when you're watching when when you're watching the team,
- 18:09it's definitely been drastically improved with what they're
- 18:12doing. We just don't run the ball
- 18:14enough. That's the other thing, like I,
- 18:18I feel like we've run more efficiently, much more
- 18:21successfully throughout this year than in the past.
- 18:23Like I think we have over 1200 rushing yards as a team, which
- 18:29is an improvement over where we were at last year, I think.
- 18:31But yeah, Kane Salter ran into a lot of sacks this year holding
- 18:38on to the ball like that. I think a lot of it had to do
- 18:42with the quarterback play for where the offensive line was at
- 18:45this year. But there was, it wasn't nearly
- 18:48like what we've seen at different points where it's
- 18:51like, dude, once the snap happens, there are guys in the
- 18:54backfield. That hasn't happened.
- 18:58But I will say we haven't served the offensive line well with we
- 19:03never, we never figured out what we wanted to be like.
- 19:07We didn't have an identity on offense, whether it was passing
- 19:10or are we going to be a running team or are we going to be a
- 19:12Smash Mouth team? You know, they we still don't do
- 19:15a lot of the stuff that you'll see probably K State and other
- 19:18Big 12 teams do is just, you know, intricate blocking schemes
- 19:22and running counter duo like these sort of things.
- 19:25Like we have like 4 running plays.
- 19:27You know, with having Pat Shermer here, you know, that's
- 19:31just that was unacceptable and we really need to hire a new OC
- 19:35this year that will we saw fired him.
- 19:38So coach prime stripped his play calling duties.
- 19:42But, you know, still leaves it acceptable to keep him around.
- 19:47You know, you can still keep your job if you're mediocre, I
- 19:49guess. You know, it just irks me that
- 19:52he's, like, still around on staff right now after all.
- 19:56That's just a disaster. So yeah, like we just run a
- 20:02bunch of basic stuff and that is an issue.
- 20:09Well, let's get into the quarterback position and some
- 20:11news today that your your five star quarterback that has had
- 20:19some play this season, Julian Lewis is going to be red
- 20:21shirting this season so will not be playing in the game on
- 20:25Saturday. So let's talk about two of the
- 20:27quarterbacks that did get some more playing time.
- 20:31You mentioned Kaden Salter, he's a Liberty transfer who started
- 20:34the season. He's had about 1200 / 1200
- 20:40passing yards this season on 179 attempts, 10 touchdowns, 6
- 20:45interceptions through eight games.
- 20:48And then you had Ryan Staub, who, you know, you think about
- 20:51that Houston game, he had a pretty, you know, was pretty
- 20:55decent, you know, 200 yards passing through 35 times.
- 21:00But, you know, it just seems like the quarterback position
- 21:04has not necessarily maybe been the way that it was anticipated
- 21:09this season, especially with Kaden Salter coming in from a
- 21:12really good career at Liberty. So, you know, watching this team
- 21:16this year, you know, what's your assessment of the quarterback
- 21:20situation, the guys that have played and maybe some reasons
- 21:24why it's been so unstable this season?
- 21:27Well, I touched on this earlier. You know, Kaden Salter, dude, he
- 21:30just, he just doesn't have the mental makeup for this level
- 21:33dude. He just doesn't.
- 21:35He folds under pressure when the moment is at its biggest, he
- 21:39folds and he's done that all throughout the season.
- 21:41And and then I'll get on the mic and say, well, you know, being
- 21:44benched a few weeks ago, didn't you know, it kind of messed,
- 21:47messed my head up a little bit. Dude, you're getting paid close
- 21:51to $1,000,000. Shut up.
- 21:53Like that's how I feel about it. Like, what are we doing?
- 21:56Stop complaining, stop sulking on the sideline when you know
- 22:00you're not playing. So the vibes, the good vibes
- 22:03there from him as a fifth year senior just did not.
- 22:06They were not there. The leadership was not there.
- 22:09And again, I wanted to stay optimistic.
- 22:13But when you're entrusting your quarterback development to Pat
- 22:16Shermer, that is a viable offense in itself.
- 22:19And yes, Pat Shermer is a disease on this team that
- 22:28hopefully I'll never have to see again after this Kansas State
- 22:32game. Man, I'm dark side Dave today.
- 22:37David, David cries buffs. There we go, running back
- 22:42position. So Michael Welch and Alan Hayden
- 22:45to well, at least Alan Hayden. That's a guy we chatted about
- 22:48last year pretty significantly. Those are the 2 two leading
- 22:52running backs despite the fact they are not the two leading
- 22:55rushers. Kaden Salter actually the second
- 22:57leading rusher on the team with only eight games under his belt,
- 23:01which which tells me a lot about the rushing stats on this team.
- 23:05Welch has 364 yards on 86 carries with two touchdowns,
- 23:09averaging about 4.2 yards per carry.
- 23:12Dallon Hayden with 260 yards on 55 carries and a touchdown.
- 23:16He's averaging about 4.7 yards per carry.
- 23:19But it's safe to say that Dion and Pat still haven't quite
- 23:22figured out the rushing game. Would you would?
- 23:24You and now Brett Bartolone is calling plays.
- 23:27So I mean, who knows what we're going to get?
- 23:29You know, he hasn't really been much better.
- 23:31So yeah, you got that three headed monster coming up with
- 23:35offensive game plans right now. You know, they're talented
- 23:38running backs. But again, last week in crunch
- 23:43time, they're averaging 6 yards of carry over the game and Coach
- 23:45Prime just puts in a walk on wide receiver running back that
- 23:49fumbles the game away and then they Arizona State rushes for a
- 23:5490 yard touchdown. So yeah, they're talented, but
- 23:58with your game plan this week with Kane Salter starting should
- 24:01just be stack, Stack the box, stop the run and force Kane
- 24:05Salter to beat you with his arm. Because you know, he can throw a
- 24:07nine round and he can throw a screen pass and he can make a
- 24:14play on the run every now and then.
- 24:15But that's really about it. So that should be your game plan
- 24:19without Julian Lewis. It did open things up a little
- 24:21bit just because of his arm talent downfield.
- 24:23So I think it opened up some stuff in the run game for us,
- 24:26which was nice last week against Arizona State.
- 24:30But yeah, they're talented. But you, you're not going to see
- 24:33them. I don't think either of them
- 24:35ball out against your defense, man.
- 24:37I know y'all about it down here on defense, but I mean, that's
- 24:41how that's how sick I am after this Arizona State game, man.
- 24:45From a, from a rushing perspective, though, it does
- 24:47look like a few of those guys that you've got a handful of
- 24:50guys on, on this, on this depth chart who have had runs OF203040
- 24:57plus yards. So it, it does look like they've
- 24:59been able to get some explosive plays here or there.
- 25:02What have been the situations where they've been able to, you
- 25:05know, pop off a run for 36 or 40 yards here or there?
- 25:10Yeah. I mean, usually light boxes
- 25:13help. Usually facing light boxes has
- 25:16definitely helped or just like not insanely stacked boxes right
- 25:20now. We got Jordan Seaton out with an
- 25:23angle injury. And so you're going to see some
- 25:27backup offensive lineman, probably two or three playing
- 25:29starting in this game. And so that's going to be
- 25:32another factor in which I think that we're going to have to
- 25:35overcome in the running game. But we don't really do you know,
- 25:40much misdirection or anything like that.
- 25:42You know, if if you guys are disciplined and your linebackers
- 25:46are are disciplined, you guys shouldn't have a issue, I think,
- 25:49stopping the run game. So yeah, Arizona State,
- 25:53unsurprisingly, you know what up some big runs to us last week
- 25:57and it gave us an opportunity to hang in the game.
- 26:01So yeah, if if our running backs get off, that's that's going to
- 26:06be the factor. And if if we're going to upset,
- 26:08I guess is we run for like 300 yards on Y'all or something like
- 26:12that. But I mean, y'all could run for
- 26:14about 600 yards on this defense. Who knows, We'll, we'll talk a
- 26:20little bit about your, you know, defense here in a little bit.
- 26:24But I do want to talk about the wide receivers.
- 26:27This is a position group that, you know, in Dion's tenure, he's
- 26:31had really, really great talent. And it all starts really with a
- 26:34Marion Miller who had a great game against us last year.
- 26:39I think he had it was like 100 and 4000 and 45 yards against us
- 26:45in the game in Boulder. But he seems like he's kind of
- 26:48the main guy who's had a lot of success. 8 touchdowns this year
- 26:53on 37 receptions. So, you know, he's been been
- 26:57really good. You also have Joseph Williams,
- 26:59who has almost 500 yards receiving this year, 4
- 27:02touchdowns also on 37 receptions.
- 27:06Kind of outside of that, you know, I think for K State fans
- 27:08who maybe haven't watched a lot of of Colorado football this
- 27:12year, you know, yeah, we might know Marion Miller.
- 27:15But, you know, talk to us a little bit about some of the
- 27:18other wide receivers, maybe some of the tight end, other tight
- 27:21ends, you know, who may have an impact in a game like this
- 27:25where, you know, since it's the last game of the year, you
- 27:28really want to try and make, you know, a big impact and, and, and
- 27:31put on some good tape here for the last game.
- 27:34Yeah, of course #4 Mari Miller, he's our best wide receiver.
- 27:38He can make great plays downfield, great contested catch
- 27:41guy. Joseph Williams, number 8, he's
- 27:44the next talented guy, man, And he can, he plays in the slot
- 27:48quite a bit, kind of taller slot wide receiver.
- 27:52But as the speed, you know, all these guys got serious speed.
- 27:55It's just a matter of getting the ball to them.
- 27:57That's been the issue this year. Watch out for true freshman
- 28:00Quentin Gibson. See if you get some snaps this
- 28:02week. He's a #15 kind of small, speedy
- 28:06guy, kind of like a built in that Jimmy Horn type of mold who
- 28:10played for us the last couple years.
- 28:11So yeah, these are guys that I mean, with Kane Salter, I would
- 28:16assume that the game plan is going to be, you know, some deep
- 28:19throws off of play action and then some screen throws.
- 28:23So very little in the intermediate game, it's going to
- 28:26be about stopping those those big plays downfield.
- 28:31All right, moving over to defense and, and we will talk
- 28:34about Quentin Gibson a little bit more when we talk about the
- 28:36return game with with special teams.
- 28:38But looking at the defense, they are currently ranked 105th in
- 28:42opposing points per game with 31.1 points allowed per game,
- 28:47112th in opposing yards per play, had at six point, 132nd in
- 28:53opposing rushing yards per game with 224, and then 69th.
- 28:57Very nice overall in defensive efficiency. 60th versus the past
- 29:0278th versus the rush 32nd in opposing third down conversion
- 29:06percentage. So they actually look pretty
- 29:08good at third down or third down conversion percentage and 43rd
- 29:11in opposing Redstone scoring percentage.
- 29:13So it it's weird because it they seem to give up a lot of points
- 29:17and they don't protect against the Russian game really well at
- 29:20all, but have had success on limiting third down conversions
- 29:24and Redstone scoring. So how much truth would you say
- 29:27there is to the numbers there and, and the I, I, I guess,
- 29:32yeah, let's just start with that.
- 29:33How much truth do you think there is to the numbers there?
- 29:35Because I I. It really doesn't make sense.
- 29:37I I think there is truth, man, because yeah, on 3rd down in
- 29:40passing situations like yeah, we've been pretty good in that
- 29:45aspect of things relative to where we are and a lot of other
- 29:48categories. But where we have just been
- 29:51atrocious is getting gashed for big running plays, just
- 29:57absolutely obliterated in giving up big rushing plays.
- 30:01Like every game there's usually, you know, a chunk, you know, two
- 30:05or three. I feel like that we give up.
- 30:07So when you're on 3rd down, you're probably not going to
- 30:11have a big running play for like 50 yards.
- 30:15And then in the red zone, you know, the space is just more
- 30:17condensed. So you can't give up a 90 yard
- 30:19touchdown run. That's kind of, that's kind of
- 30:23how I see things. But yeah, when there's a lot of
- 30:26field in front of you, that's when we've been at our worst in
- 30:32the run game is, yeah, our linebackers will go to the same
- 30:35hole or they won't understand what's going on, or we'll have
- 30:3810 guys on the field and you'll just gash us for a 60 yard play.
- 30:43And we've also had trouble just stopping like basic stuff like
- 30:48zone read, like our linebackers just cannot read that to save
- 30:53their life. Zone read play.
- 30:55Yeah. So I would assume Avery Johnson
- 30:58to have, you know, lots of opportunities to rush on this
- 31:02team for a lot of a lot of yards.
- 31:05It's kind of like me playing NCA football.
- 31:08It's exactly like me playing NCAA.
- 31:10Football can't, can't stop the zone.
- 31:12I want to get a talk a little bit about the defensive line and
- 31:15linebackers and again, kind of comparing this team to last
- 31:19season when I was watching them in Boulder.
- 31:23You know, this has been a, a, a defensive line and linebacking
- 31:26group, as you said that that has struggled in certain areas.
- 31:30You have some guys who have some solid numbers, Keaton Wade and
- 31:34Arden Walker, strong tackle numbers and seem to be your sack
- 31:40leaders. 2 1/2 sacks apiece on the linebacking side.
- 31:44Jeremiah Brown, Reginald Hughes, Jeremiah Brown 61 tackles.
- 31:48He has two sacks on the year. Reginald Hughes, 48 tackles.
- 31:52So, you know, you look at those numbers and they look, they look
- 31:55pretty decent, you know, albeit the, you know, the defense has
- 31:59struggled kind of as a whole this year.
- 32:01So, you know, with some of those guys, maybe some other names,
- 32:05you know, who are, who are some guys that might be able to wreak
- 32:08a little bit of havoc against the K State offensive line that
- 32:11has been very up and down over all this season.
- 32:14Yeah, look out for some of our young guys, our young edge
- 32:17players, London Merritt #44 and Alexander McPherson, number 98.
- 32:21There are defensive ends. They're both true freshmen from
- 32:25IMG and they've had, you know, fantastic freshman year.
- 32:28So yeah, they, I don't know if they got like the numbers that
- 32:32might, you know, pop off the stat sheet or whatever, but they
- 32:36have been very impressive in their capacity.
- 32:38I'd love to see them get more snaps this week.
- 32:42Yeah, Because you got to have somebody to make the tackles,
- 32:45right? You know, I guess eventually.
- 32:47But yeah, like, none of these guys have been overwhelmingly
- 32:51impressive really at all. Reginald, he's been an absolute
- 32:54disaster at a inside linebacker. So you might see a guy like
- 32:58Mantrez Walker. I'd really love to see him play.
- 33:02He's a red shirt freshman. But I tell you what, we haven't
- 33:05even seen him on the field all year.
- 33:06So I, I don't know. The best linebacker that we've
- 33:09had has been #40 Shawn Meyers. And he, why hasn't he been
- 33:14starting the whole year, man? I don't know.
- 33:16But he's really come along over the last few games throughout
- 33:19the season. So, yeah, you'll still see
- 33:23Reggie Hughes out there #50 calling the defense.
- 33:25But that that is not a good thing, not a good thing for us.
- 33:34Well, maybe the DBS are, I don't know are the DBS?
- 33:37Game. No man, they're BBQ chicken.
- 33:40We got everybody hurt. Ivan Yates #29 he'll be OK DJ
- 33:45McKinney is out hurt. The safeties are a disaster
- 33:49because we lost our MVP of the season to feed by our two wrist
- 33:52injuries. So once he went out in that game
- 33:56against Arizona State, he's the guy mainly kind of making up for
- 34:00the linebackers in the run game. And with him out, I don't even
- 34:05know who's going to get the started safety.
- 34:07It might be Carter Stoutmeyer, and he's just stiff.
- 34:11So yeah man, after I saw the running totals y'all had, man,
- 34:21you guys should feast on us this week.
- 34:23It sucks going into this matchup like feeling hopeless, but
- 34:27that's exactly how I feel without Julian Lewis at
- 34:31quarterback. Dude, we got nothing to play for
- 34:33anymore. Man, this has been I, I mean,
- 34:37I've been on for half of the call and half this and I didn't
- 34:42even want, you know, I will preface, I was actually gone on
- 34:45Saturday. I did not watch any of the K
- 34:47State game at all and I didn't really catch up with anything
- 34:50from Big 12 football. And so, you know, when I saw the
- 34:55stat sheet for the Colorado Arizona State game, I mean, you
- 34:59know, with kind of how Colorado been playing all year, you know,
- 35:03it was very interesting to kind of see some of the stats with it
- 35:06and, you know, try and at least figure out maybe what are some
- 35:10things at K State might, you know, have some weaknesses
- 35:13against Colorado for this game. And you're making it seem like
- 35:17there are not. There aren't too many.
- 35:22I do want to talk though, about chef's favorite piece of the
- 35:25puzzle, which is a special teams.
- 35:27So you have Alejandro Mata. He's only missed 1 field goal
- 35:31and one extra point this year. He's been pretty solid.
- 35:34And I know he was the starting kicker last year.
- 35:36I remember him in Boulder. But you know, K State is, is
- 35:42really kind of struggled this season from a special teams
- 35:44perspective. We made some bad mistakes,
- 35:47especially, you know, trying to guard, you know, kick returners.
- 35:50And so Quentin Gibson on the Colorado side, you know, he's
- 35:54been all right. So chef's favorite kind of part
- 35:59of the show is always talking about the opposing team, special
- 36:02teams. We definitely want to we speak
- 36:05about, you know, from a kicker perspective.
- 36:09Alejandro Amada, one of your your your main kicker this
- 36:12season. We saw him last year, he's only
- 36:16missed 1 field goal this year and one extra point.
- 36:18So he's really been been very solid, very reliable as a
- 36:21kicker. But one of K State's really big
- 36:25miscues, at least on the special teams side, is giving up long
- 36:28kick returns. And unfortunately, Colorado has
- 36:30a guy who's third in the nation in return yardage this season.
- 36:35He has 597 kick returns on 25 overall returns this season.
- 36:40So, you know, thinking about potentially what are some things
- 36:44that Colorado is going to need to do to really take advantage
- 36:47of some of their strengths and maybe in the special teams area.
- 36:49So just give us a little bit of insight like what you've seen
- 36:52from from those guys and maybe, you know, is this Quinton
- 36:56Gibson's opportunity to maybe make some big plays to get
- 36:59Colorado on the K State side of the field?
- 37:01Dude, man, I sure hope so. I got to put the horns on and
- 37:05get a little positive about this team, right?
- 37:08But yeah, we call Quinton Gibson, you know, his nickname
- 37:12in high school is Q for Six. I don't think he's got a
- 37:15touchdown on the entire year, which has been like, can't call
- 37:19you Q for 6:00 and you're not scoring touchdowns, dude.
- 37:21It's going to happen eventually, man.
- 37:23You know, I would. I would like to see it happen.
- 37:26He's had a lot of opportunity. We've had a lot of points scored
- 37:30against us, so he's got to bring one back eventually.
- 37:35Yeah. Return games been good, kicking
- 37:38game pretty good. You know, we don't really take
- 37:40long field goals. Matt Matt has been good.
- 37:43He kick him low though. He'll kick him low.
- 37:45You could you could block one. But probably the best player on
- 37:49our team guys. And this is how you know you got
- 37:52a three win team. The best player on our team's
- 37:55been our punter, Damon Grieves. I'm.
- 37:58Dead ass serious dude. Damon Grieves should be at least
- 38:04at least second team all Big 12 punter.
- 38:07Dude. He's been a fantastic punter,
- 38:09putting those things in between the 20 inside the 20.
- 38:13Just big booter, booming, booming at altitude.
- 38:16He's been great. You're going to probably see a
- 38:18lot of them on Saturday. He's been able to flip field
- 38:21position for us, man. He's been awesome and Aussie.
- 38:26Aussie. So he's a what do they call him?
- 38:29Not a lad, right? They call him something else.
- 38:31What do they call Aussies? No.
- 38:36I don't. I don't even know.
- 38:37I don't. Know yeah, maybe it is like big.
- 38:39But maybe it is a lad. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:41Maybe that's that's Irish though.
- 38:43Yeah, I don't know. But anyways, Damon Grease, the
- 38:45best punter in the world, that's how I feel about it going into
- 38:48this game. And I mean how many wins y'all
- 38:51got 4? How many wins?
- 38:56Yeah, we have 5. Y'all got five wins.
- 38:59We have 5 we're playing. Ball.
- 39:00Yeah, yeah. Y'all are going to obliterate
- 39:02us, man. Y'all are playing for a bowl
- 39:03game. Yeah.
- 39:05Oh my God, yeah. You're going to see a lot of
- 39:07Damon Grieves this Saturday, man.
- 39:08Bloke. We're just looking at synonym,
- 39:12Yeah, I'm looking at what did the Aussie say for.
- 39:14Laughs. What?
- 39:15What? What a good term.
- 39:17You. Know bloke I I don't know.
- 39:20Bloke Hey, that's where I get the shame.
- 39:26Dude, bloke, mate and ashay. Mate, mate.
- 39:29Yes, mate, mate. He's a mate, mate.
- 39:32Good night mate. Good night.
- 39:36Mate, Oh jeez. Well, if if Colorado's going to
- 39:39have any chance to win on Saturday, what do you think is
- 39:42the key to them winning? You mentioned a few things, but
- 39:44if you were to distill it down to to a couple things, what
- 39:47would you say it is? Sports gambling, man, Really.
- 39:53That's it, man. I got to hope that some of your
- 39:55players have, you know, they want to make a quick extra buck
- 39:59on throwing this game. How about that?
- 40:02We get we we get Kansas State into some Chauncey Billups
- 40:05problems. That's what I'm talking about.
- 40:08But yeah, to be honest, dude, that's really the only chance we
- 40:12got to win this game. Unless somehow Kane Salter plays
- 40:16way better than what he's played throughout the entire year.
- 40:19Man, It's just. Man, we got nothing to play for
- 40:24anymore. Got nothing to play for.
- 40:25So man, I just hope we cover the spread.
- 40:29What's the spread? I've even looked at it, man.
- 40:31That's how bad I feel about we. Have a 1717 1/2.
- 40:36Dude, I don't know if we cover the spread man.
- 40:38I don't. Know if we.
- 40:38Cover the spread man. And how many running yards did
- 40:42y'all run for last last week? Set a school record Guy 400.
- 40:46And. 425 or something isn't. More than that.
- 40:53Yeah, yeah, yeah. But y'all don't need Dylan
- 40:55Edwards to do that either, man. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:58Oh, yeah. He y'all, dude.
- 41:00We can bond over that dude. What?
- 41:02Dude, this guy. Smile on your face, dude.
- 41:05Snake. He's a snake.
- 41:06He'll stab you behind the back. And you know, good luck to him
- 41:10being a corn muncher or whatever.
- 41:11He becomes this for this season. Ain't going to miss him.
- 41:15God, God. He knows.
- 41:17Nebraska. Yeah, you know, that that whole
- 41:19situation has been very interesting.
- 41:21And obviously, you know, Colorado, you kind of saw it
- 41:24first. And, you know, I, it'll be very
- 41:28interesting to see where he ends up, you know, from from our
- 41:32perspective. But just want to kind of end the
- 41:36the recap. And we always kind of ask for,
- 41:39you know, what you think the prediction for the game is going
- 41:41to be. You know, I don't mind starting.
- 41:46Oh, hello. I don't mind starting just to
- 41:51provide a little kind of Comic Relief.
- 41:54You know, I so I was in Europe this past week and I didn't get
- 41:58to watch the K State game. I went to bed, you know, game
- 42:02started at 10:00 and I had a 6:00 AM wake up call.
- 42:06I was like, you know what, we're going to lose the Utah, but
- 42:08whatever. So to see us be able to score 51
- 42:10points or, excuse me, 47 points, you would assume you'd get a
- 42:14win. And then you don't you get, you
- 42:15know, give up 51. There's been a lot of, you know,
- 42:20things going on in the program this week with Chris Kleiman
- 42:23and, you know, kind of how his press conference was, you know,
- 42:27kind of taken from people all across the fan base and this and
- 42:30that. But overall, I think this is a
- 42:32game that, you know, they want to win just to get the bowl
- 42:35eligibility. You know, you get some extra
- 42:37practices with your group, you know, and you get to see a lot
- 42:39of the young players. But I think coming from that
- 42:42Utah game, that's a game where they they really fought, you
- 42:47know, for it seemed like for, you know, for the entire game.
- 42:50So I think this is going to be a little bit of a comeback game
- 42:53for this this group. It's not as much about Colorado.
- 42:58I think, you know, I know Colorado has had some struggles
- 43:00this year, but I think K State is really going to come out and
- 43:02try and, you know, make a really big effort to show strength in
- 43:07this game. So I think it's going to be 45
- 43:10to 17. I, I just think K State, you
- 43:14know, showed a lot on the rushing, you know, rushing area.
- 43:17It seems like it's a little bit too little too late for the
- 43:19season. But you know, they, they made
- 43:21something work against Utah, who had a very, very strong defense.
- 43:25And I know that Colorado has some holes in the defensive
- 43:27side. So I think K State will have a
- 43:30pretty, pretty big game in this one.
- 43:32So I'm thinking 45 to 17, David, if you want to, you can go.
- 43:37Yeah, go ahead, dude. You might score 45 points in the
- 43:40first half. Like that has been kind of on
- 43:42par with these offenses like the states that we faced this year,
- 43:47like Utah, dude, they, I think they had almost 50 points on us
- 43:50in the first half. So yeah, this we've had a we had
- 43:55back-to-back 50 point losses or games in which we gave up fifty
- 44:00points. I see you guys eclipsing 50
- 44:03points in this game as well. So I'm going to go with 55 to 21
- 44:11KSU. That's ah dude, that sucks to
- 44:15say. Sucks to say.
- 44:18Hey y'all, use that code DTB on calci, get yourself 10.
- 44:22Dollar bonus and. Put some money and dude on it.
- 44:26So yeah, like, that's how I see this thing going, dude.
- 44:31It's going to be like a funeral for what has been a horrible
- 44:34football season. So yeah, can't wait.
- 44:38Can't wait for it to be over. Yeah, I, I, I'm also in a place
- 44:43where, you know, the Utah game was great and it gave me a lot
- 44:45of hope, but it, but I'm also just kind of, I feel like this
- 44:48team needs to, needs to be put out of their misery a little
- 44:51bit. Like, let's just get through
- 44:52this game, get through the bowl game reset and then we'll figure
- 44:55out next year. But I, I, I think the Cats are
- 44:58going to run, run away with this one.
- 45:00I've got the Cats winning 42 to 14.
- 45:04So yeah, I, I just feel good about them bouncing back from
- 45:07that very emotional game in Utah, Senior nights in
- 45:10Manhattan. If it's inclement weather,
- 45:13though, who knows? Colorado could get there because
- 45:17we do not play well in the inclement weather at all.
- 45:20I mean, we don't play well in any game.
- 45:21So I, I, I think y'all got a good opportunity here to get to
- 45:26a bowl game. That'll be that's fantastic.
- 45:29You guys got so much more to be playing for.
- 45:32Again, I think it would feel different, dude, if we had
- 45:34Julian Lewis playing this game. It's like you got the youthful
- 45:36energy and all that. But we played them for two
- 45:39series against Delaware for some reason.
- 45:41And so now we're here. Yeah.
- 45:46Well. Yeah, yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm ready
- 45:50for the game. It's going to be fun, I hope.
- 45:53But anyway, David, thanks again for coming on Recurring Guests.
- 45:57Now, recurring guests let the people know where they can find
- 46:01you, and we'll give you the final word here.
- 46:03Before we get guys, I love the Cocaine Willie podcast.
- 46:06I'm sorry my team sucks so bad. I can't come on here and talk a
- 46:12little bit of smack and make this thing really interesting
- 46:15and predict KSU to lose. The only thing I can predict are
- 46:19some suspensions from throwing the game this Saturday.
- 46:22Hopefully, but hopefully next year you can have me back on.
- 46:27David talks buffs on YouTube. David talks sports now on
- 46:31Instagram and Tiktok. We're going viral every day,
- 46:34baby, and David Talks Broncos on YouTube.

- 46:42you know, Super Bowl, Super Bowl expectations now with the
- 46:47Broncos, you can find me at David Talks Broncos.
- 46:50It's a new era, bone Knicks. Patrick Mahomes is regressing
- 46:54just like Russell Wilson because it can't be bailed out by that
- 46:57elite defense anymore like Russell Wilson had in Seattle.
- 47:00It's a new era in the AFC. What?
- 47:05I have to say, I have to say y'all are getting a little
- 47:08chirpy living in the Denver area.
- 47:10You're getting a little chirpy and you're you're very quick to
- 47:14forget the 16 game losing streak.
- 47:16I'll, I'll just say that. Dude, I, I buried that away out
- 47:20of PTSD, man. We don't, we don't remember
- 47:24that. We don't remember that it's a
- 47:25new era, baby. I got to say that that win last
- 47:28week, it almost made me forget this whole college football
- 47:32season. So thanks for having me on,
- 47:35guys. I I really do wish you all the
- 47:37best. And yeah, more K State fans.
- 47:41They need to follow you. I Yeah, they need to follow you
