- 0:47Speaker 2: five time All Star, top five in the cy Young
- 0:51Speaker 2: three different times, two hundred career wins, and an insane
- 0:55Speaker 2: four and one world series record with a one seven
- 0:58Speaker 2: seven e r A and fell little cancer survivor, Johnny
- 1:02Speaker 2: fucking Leicester.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Yes, number thirty four in your programs, number one in
- 1:09Speaker 4: our hearts.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Just so, I appreciate that.
- 1:12Speaker 3: I appreciate the left hander.
- 1:13Speaker 4: We got so many we got so many nicknames for you,
- 1:16Speaker 4: but we got to set the scene.
- 1:18Speaker 3: All right, We're here.
- 1:19Speaker 4: At John's Farm Sanctuary Sanctuary thirty one thirty Boston days.
- 1:24Speaker 2: We think it should be thirty four, but.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Hey, there was a time and a place when it was.
- 1:28Speaker 3: He started making money early.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Actually, on that note, John, how rich are you?
- 1:34Speaker 1: Well, Rossie, I'm not rich.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I'm wealthy. I have rich people that work for me.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I've lived my life by that quote. I don't have
- 1:40Speaker 2: any rich people really working for me, so I don't
- 1:42Speaker 2: really know where I.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Can't fully take that.
- 1:45Speaker 5: I stole it from Josh Beckett, so I got to
- 1:47Speaker 5: give him credit for that saying.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I learned that a long time ago from him.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, your your cast of veterans that you played with
- 1:57Speaker 2: are so intimidating to me years later. Yea, And like
- 2:01Speaker 2: any time I ever see Tim Wakefield or Rest in
- 2:04Speaker 2: Peace Waki, but Beckett, who is a Josh Tomlin, Timlin,
- 2:10Speaker 2: Mike tim Mike Timlin, I'm just terrified of all those
- 2:14Speaker 2: guys because of the stories I heard from you. And
- 2:15Speaker 2: I walked into that clubhouse one time and Beckett was
- 2:17Speaker 2: on the table when I was when you're taking me around,
- 2:19Speaker 2: which we'll get into, and I was like so terrified
- 2:22Speaker 2: walking to that clubhouse. But do you think I felt, Noah,
- 2:25Speaker 2: I know, I've heard all the stories. Johnny. You signing
- 2:30Speaker 2: in Chicago in fifteen was it's the greatest signing in
- 2:35Speaker 2: Cubs history. And what that simplified for our team was
- 2:41Speaker 2: the most amazing feeling. As someone who was there, who
- 2:44Speaker 2: lost one hundred games and we stunk and we were
- 2:47Speaker 2: getting better, and then all of a sudden, we get
- 2:50Speaker 2: Joe Matt and that signs out of nowhere, and then
- 2:53Speaker 2: the biggest freege on the market, John Lester, comes and
- 2:56Speaker 2: signs with us, and we're like, what is going on?
- 3:00Speaker 2: Take us through that free agency process? Take us why
- 3:03Speaker 2: you believed in us? Because we stunk and you were
- 3:07Speaker 2: the best picture on the market, So why why did
- 3:09Speaker 2: you sound with us? How did that go?
- 3:11Speaker 3: Man?
- 3:11Speaker 5: I mean, it wasn't an easy process. It was a
- 3:16Speaker 5: fun process. Looking back on it, I wish I would
- 3:20Speaker 5: have kind of relished in it a little bit more.
- 3:22Speaker 5: It was you know, at the time, when you're going
- 3:23Speaker 5: through all of that, it's very stressful because you know,
- 3:28Speaker 5: I mean, at the end of the day, I got
- 3:30Speaker 5: traded to Oakland and I wanted to go back to Boston,
- 3:33Speaker 5: right like, hey, yeah, trade me, we stink. Make your
- 3:37Speaker 5: team better, hopefully, and then we'll come back in a
- 3:40Speaker 5: few months and make it, make it right right, Like
- 3:42Speaker 5: we'll go back to winning. And you know, it's kind
- 3:47Speaker 5: of like you break up with your first girlfriend. She
- 3:49Speaker 5: dumps you, and then she kind of gives you a
- 3:51Speaker 5: glimmer of hope that you might get back together and
- 3:53Speaker 5: then stabs you in the back again.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Oh you know, so been there right?
- 3:57Speaker 5: I mean, am I saying anyway? But during the whole process,
- 4:03Speaker 5: it was the Red Sox the whole time. And then
- 4:05Speaker 5: we went up to Chicago met with THEO and Tom
- 4:09Speaker 5: and Crane and you know, all the whole cast. And
- 4:14Speaker 5: as you guys know, THEO, I think can sell ice
- 4:16Speaker 5: to an Eskimo, you know, and sitting in there and
- 4:19Speaker 5: seeing what they were doing with Wrigley and Wrigleyville and
- 4:22Speaker 5: the team and the vision and all this stuff and
- 4:26Speaker 5: no offense to rendery I don't know the man. But
- 4:30Speaker 5: once they hired Joe, it was kind of like, all right,
- 4:33Speaker 5: this is real, you know what I'm saying. And I
- 4:38Speaker 5: mean THEO made it hard not to turn down.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I mean what made it hard? John? The was it
- 4:45Speaker 2: one hundred and eighty seven million?
- 4:47Speaker 1: It was fifty five.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Okay, sorry, was it the private jet hours that you
- 4:52Speaker 2: threw into your contract?
- 4:53Speaker 5: Okay, So I'll tell you funny story. What was what
- 4:55Speaker 5: was the I'll tell you a funny story about the
- 4:57Speaker 5: private jet deal. So we agreed to the deal. Me
- 5:00Speaker 5: and my family go out to dinner. We celebrate. You know,
- 5:02Speaker 5: it hasn't been announced yet. I think they've only told
- 5:06Speaker 5: or like we've only told THEO or whatever. Had too
- 5:11Speaker 5: much to drink at dinner, go to bed, wake up
- 5:13Speaker 5: the next morning, turn on MLB channel and they're you
- 5:17Speaker 5: know how the MLB channel. They scroll across the bottom,
- 5:20Speaker 5: like the details of the contract. So I'm sitting there
- 5:23Speaker 5: watching it, take kids to school, watching it, and I
- 5:26Speaker 5: see twenty five hours on NetJets. I'm like, huh wait
- 5:30Speaker 5: a second, pull a phone call my age and I'm like, dude,
- 5:33Speaker 5: I got twenty five hours on net jets.
- 5:35Speaker 1: He goes, yeah, we kind of got that in there.
- 5:38Speaker 5: I had no idea that was part of the deal
- 5:41Speaker 5: when it went down, but that was I mean, to
- 5:44Speaker 5: be honest with you, that was the best thing.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Well, you had a hard time. I remember coming to
- 5:50Speaker 4: the Christmas party you had. Yeah, and San Francisco you said,
- 5:54Speaker 4: pitched a really nice buster and Boach came in and
- 5:58Speaker 4: pitch it.
- 5:58Speaker 3: And then you were like, hey, what do you think Chicago.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Yeah, and like from then on you were just quiet
- 6:04Speaker 4: and it was all it was all working.
- 6:06Speaker 3: But like that was that was a really big decision.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I remember how much of weighing on you.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Yeah, and all your history, your kids growing up, being
- 6:14Speaker 4: born in Boston, and.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Haven't you had a house there.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yes, we had a house there.
- 6:18Speaker 5: And you know, I mean, at the end of the day,
- 6:22Speaker 5: I don't want to say the Red Sox made it
- 6:24Speaker 5: easy just based on how they were operating at the time,
- 6:27Speaker 5: but they made it easier. The hard part of the
- 6:29Speaker 5: end is, you know, when you're at that point in
- 6:32Speaker 5: your career, you want you have a vision of kind
- 6:34Speaker 5: of how long you want to play for, right, and
- 6:38Speaker 5: mine was seven. I wanted seven years, however that looked whatever,
- 6:42Speaker 5: however structure you wanted. I thought, Okay, seven years gives
- 6:45Speaker 5: me the best opportunity in the city to hopefully win,
- 6:49Speaker 5: do some personal things kind of.
- 6:53Speaker 1: You know, get your.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Roots in that still legacy. Yeah, like you did get
- 6:56Speaker 2: your legacies in Boston and have legacies in Chicago, and
- 6:59Speaker 2: you have a small see in Oakland.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Small, very small, and DC and even a smaller one
- 7:03Speaker 5: in Saint Louis too, But you know, San Francisco comes
- 7:08Speaker 5: in and they they're at six years, six years, six years,
- 7:11Speaker 5: and all of a sudden they come they go, all right,
- 7:12Speaker 5: we'll give you the guaranteed seventh and you're like, hmmm,
- 7:16Speaker 5: I don't want to go back out to the West Coast,
- 7:17Speaker 5: even though I'm from there. My family's here, you know,
- 7:20Speaker 5: and it's like, how do you do this? How would
- 7:22Speaker 5: you navigate it? And all that, And then ultimately it
- 7:26Speaker 5: was like, you know, we'll just play the cards and
- 7:29Speaker 5: see how they fall, and hopefully I'm good enough at
- 7:32Speaker 5: the sixth year where my option gets picked up and
- 7:34Speaker 5: we right off into the sunset. You know, obviously that
- 7:37Speaker 5: didn't happen, but I mean I don't obviously don't regret
- 7:41Speaker 5: the decision of coming over.
- 7:43Speaker 4: So you go to Chicago, you have your signing, A
- 7:48Speaker 4: big group of you guys went out to celebrate that night.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I know where you're going with this.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Can you walk me through what happened that night?
- 7:56Speaker 2: So we go.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I forgot even where we were.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I'm assuming you were overs bub.
- 8:01Speaker 5: City, bub City Bubs shout out bub City best fireball
- 8:05Speaker 5: in town.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It's to home made.
- 8:07Speaker 5: In case you guys didn't know, it's their own recipe.
- 8:09Speaker 5: Really yeah, it's it's pretty.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So we go to bub City.
- 8:14Speaker 5: It's THEO Jed me, my family, my agents, and we're
- 8:20Speaker 5: sitting there talking and we're going over like kind of
- 8:24Speaker 5: new place like what they need to kind of fill
- 8:27Speaker 5: the roster for the team. And I'm like, y'all got
- 8:29Speaker 5: a backup catcher and they're like, they go, no, I go,
- 8:33Speaker 5: you need to sign Rossie.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I forgot who said it.
- 8:36Speaker 5: They're like, well, you know his ops and this and
- 8:38Speaker 5: that has gone down over the last couple of years.
- 8:40Speaker 5: And I'm like, yeah, but you need you need a veteran,
- 8:43Speaker 5: veteran dude that knows what his role is when he comes,
- 8:46Speaker 5: when he walks through that door, there's no I'm competing
- 8:48Speaker 5: for the starting job.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I'm this is my job.
- 8:52Speaker 5: I'm here to pick up I think I think we
- 8:54Speaker 5: had traded for Meggy at that time. Yeah, yep, I'm
- 8:58Speaker 5: here to pick up Meggi when he needs a break.
- 8:59Speaker 5: And then he would obviously catch me. So I get
- 9:03Speaker 5: to I mean, I'm bugging the hell out of THEO
- 9:07Speaker 5: And finally he's.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Like, it's two in the morning.
- 9:09Speaker 5: We're the only people in Bob City, and he goes,
- 9:12Speaker 5: you get him on the phone. We'll work a deal out.
- 9:16Speaker 5: As a kid say bet all right, your culture prove it?
- 9:20Speaker 1: Like here, okay, here we go. Pull the phone up.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Three in the morning, Florida time.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, I forgot that. So two in the
- 9:26Speaker 1: morning and three in the morning. There I called his
- 9:29Speaker 1: phone seven times.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Now I'm waking up, going, oh John's drunk.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, like this is the this is I mean,
- 9:35Speaker 1: what are you doing? Fo call?
- 9:36Speaker 5: But so I'm like, I go, Fair, do you have
- 9:40Speaker 5: highless number? And she's like, yeah, I go call her
- 9:45Speaker 5: right now.
- 9:46Speaker 3: How it goes this is that's that's Era's calling me.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Because I was like, who is that? I was like,
- 9:50Speaker 3: it's John. He's hammered. She said it's fair. I was like, okay,
- 9:55Speaker 3: I should probably answer this.
- 9:57Speaker 2: What if you didn't answer, think about how history is yeah,
- 10:00Speaker 2: not written the way it looks.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Yeah, thank God for Pharaoh. We can pay her for
- 10:03Speaker 3: a long yeah damn.
- 10:04Speaker 5: So he answered. He highly gives him the phone. I'm like, hey, bro,
- 10:07Speaker 5: I'm sitting here with THEO. Do you want to come
- 10:09Speaker 5: to Chicago. And he's like, fuck yeah, let's do it.
- 10:13Speaker 5: So I'm sitting He's like, I'm all right, what would
- 10:15Speaker 5: it take to get here? He goes, man, if you
- 10:17Speaker 5: get me five and a half, that'd be great, or
- 10:19Speaker 5: six you started at six? He goes two for six,
- 10:24Speaker 5: So mind you, and I don't remember bub City having
- 10:26Speaker 5: these after the fact, but THEO had this mug, like
- 10:30Speaker 5: an october Fest mug of beer.
- 10:33Speaker 1: And I'm on the phone in one of those boosts.
- 10:36Speaker 5: And THEO standing there at two am at two am,
- 10:39Speaker 5: all right, and I go, hey, he wants two for six,
- 10:44Speaker 5: And THEO starts drinking his beer.
- 10:47Speaker 1: He just goes. He just keeps doing this over.
- 10:51Speaker 5: And wouldn't say a word, just keeps going two five
- 10:55Speaker 5: to five.
- 10:56Speaker 1: So I'm like, uh ROSSI He's saying two five.
- 10:58Speaker 2: He's like, all right, see you can get me five.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I'm like you can't. Real quick.
- 11:03Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm going with Leicester to Chicago. Let's go.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I was like, I was like, dude, deal he wants
- 11:08Speaker 1: to he wants five and a half. He just he's
- 11:10Speaker 1: still this beer.
- 11:12Speaker 2: What a what a g dude?
- 11:14Speaker 1: Two for five?
- 11:15Speaker 5: Just back and forth and I'm like, damn it, Rossi's
- 11:18Speaker 5: he's five.
- 11:19Speaker 2: This is one of the most established baseball executives of
- 11:23Speaker 2: all time, and this is how he's negotiating. Yeah, I'm
- 11:26Speaker 2: gonna start doing that for now on.
- 11:27Speaker 5: And he don't say a word, and he sits there
- 11:29Speaker 5: and he just keeps doing it, and I tell I
- 11:31Speaker 5: tell a Rossia, goo, man, he's two for five.
- 11:35Speaker 1: He's like, all right. It's like silence. I think.
- 11:38Speaker 5: I'm like, it's still good. You got the phone. He goes,
- 11:42Speaker 5: all right, I'll take it. See if you can get
- 11:43Speaker 5: me a suite on the road.
- 11:46Speaker 3: I will go to the next morning.
- 11:48Speaker 4: My agent was so, I said, I think I just
- 11:50Speaker 4: came I remember we had the same agent.
- 11:54Speaker 3: I think we just came to terms with Chicago two
- 11:57Speaker 3: for five. He's like, what what are you talking about?
- 11:59Speaker 3: You get on the phone, cust them out.
- 12:01Speaker 4: But bro, you that that is like, that's like, it's
- 12:04Speaker 4: so funny how that went down to me, like nobody
- 12:08Speaker 4: would ever. I don't think we've told that story.
- 12:10Speaker 2: You came in, though, and you completely shifted the culture there.
- 12:14Speaker 2: And we had great veterans before, I mean with Soriano,
- 12:17Speaker 2: Seln cashtro Edwin Jackson, Reed, Johnson, Jeff Baker, Dempster, great veterans,
- 12:23Speaker 2: but when you walked in that door, it changed. Yeah,
- 12:27Speaker 2: And I don't know if you ever knew that. I
- 12:29Speaker 2: don't think you ever got the actual proper respect and
- 12:32Speaker 2: runway that how much you changed that culture. But being
- 12:36Speaker 2: there for the time I was there beforehand and you
- 12:39Speaker 2: coming in was like, this is real and we're gonna
- 12:43Speaker 2: win now because you're a winner. And you bring in
- 12:46Speaker 2: h soon to be Grandpa Rossi with you and he's
- 12:50Speaker 2: a winner. And the respect to you guys, deem dude.
- 12:53Speaker 2: That first spring training, that first day in twenty fifteen,
- 12:57Speaker 2: I think you threw a live VP and it was
- 12:58Speaker 2: the most electric, intense live batting practice till this day
- 13:04Speaker 2: I've ever seen. And I was like, holy shit, Like
- 13:08Speaker 2: these two are legit.
- 13:10Speaker 3: I think I have a lot more than me.
- 13:12Speaker 5: I think that's part of you know, growing up in
- 13:14Speaker 5: Boston though too, right, Like you get to Boston and
- 13:19Speaker 5: the media microscope there and the fan microscope is I mean,
- 13:23Speaker 5: it's so honed on you that when you show up
- 13:26Speaker 5: to spring training, it's not like I tell this story
- 13:29Speaker 5: about demp Ryan Dempster twenty thirteen or two thousand yeah, thirteen.
- 13:36Speaker 5: So we're coming off twelve. It's my worst year of
- 13:38Speaker 5: my career and we got our asses kicked all year.
- 13:43Speaker 2: That was your boy, right, Yeah, that was the whole disaster.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:47Speaker 5: And so we get to spring training and dude, I've
- 13:50Speaker 5: been throwing bullpens for like a month and a half.
- 13:52Speaker 5: And when I mean bullpens, like the last six bullpens
- 13:55Speaker 5: I faced hitters before I left home and got to
- 13:59Speaker 5: spring training. So first day of bullpens, you know, I'm
- 14:03Speaker 5: telling the pitching coach Juandi Avez at the time, I'm like, hey, dude,
- 14:10Speaker 5: I'm throwing a fifty or sixty pitch bullpen. Like I'm
- 14:13Speaker 5: we're getting locked in and demp said on the other
- 14:16Speaker 5: end of the six pack or whatever. And he hears
- 14:19Speaker 5: me say that, and he walks down. He goes, you're
- 14:20Speaker 5: throwing what. He goes, this is the first day of camp, Dude.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I go, yeah, what about it?
- 14:26Speaker 5: He goes, I haven't thrown off the mound yet. You
- 14:30Speaker 5: know what I'm saying, like, nothing against them. He was
- 14:32Speaker 5: a little bit older in his career.
- 14:34Speaker 1: He knew it worked for him and that's how he
- 14:36Speaker 1: did it.
- 14:37Speaker 5: But I was so upset about the way the year
- 14:39Speaker 5: went before and got you know, crushed and all that
- 14:42Speaker 5: stuff for my performance, which I deserve. But it was like,
- 14:46Speaker 5: all right, the accountability needs to be I need to
- 14:48Speaker 5: be ready. I need to be accountable for what happened
- 14:50Speaker 5: last year, and I need to get off to a
- 14:51Speaker 5: good start. The point I'm trying to make is Boston
- 14:55Speaker 5: makes you think that way. Even though it's day one
- 14:57Speaker 5: of spring. There's fifty So I'm on media people sitting
- 15:01Speaker 5: there and they're looking at you, seeing how you throw
- 15:03Speaker 5: your bullpen.
- 15:03Speaker 2: And how you do about It's another level.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:06Speaker 5: And so coming to Chicago, you know, talking to him
- 15:10Speaker 5: and a few other people getting there, it's like, hey, dude,
- 15:13Speaker 5: just be yourself, dive into your routine, dive into what
- 15:17Speaker 5: you do.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I probably wasn't the most sociable person, but I disagree.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah, you just got to get break down the barriers.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to get past the resting bitch face.
- 15:26Speaker 1: But other than that, you're good.
- 15:29Speaker 2: But don't go I don't ever get any compliments.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I was like, why is everybody like you?
- 15:33Speaker 3: Guys like cause that's smile at him, Johnny.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I just bro We were in whenever we went back
- 15:38Speaker 2: to Boston. I was with uh he was a Cubs
- 15:42Speaker 2: employee at the time. Jeff McGee one of our good friends,
- 15:46Speaker 2: and we were in like a little dive bar with
- 15:48Speaker 2: all his friends and they're from like Lowell, Massachusetts. They
- 15:51Speaker 2: have the thick accents and we're boozing a little bit
- 15:54Speaker 2: is after a game and his boys are just like,
- 15:57Speaker 2: we're talking about you, and they're just pissed off that
- 15:59Speaker 2: the Red Sox in a sign you back. And they're like,
- 16:01Speaker 2: there's no fucking price for Johnny Lester. I should have
- 16:04Speaker 2: got him when he was on sale, referencing they signed
- 16:07Speaker 2: David Price and Chris Sales and they just kept the
- 16:11Speaker 2: whole There's no fucking price for Johnny Lester. You should
- 16:14Speaker 2: have got him on sale. And like bro, these thick
- 16:17Speaker 2: they're passionate fans. There's only so many fan bases like that.
- 16:21Speaker 2: You've played for two, I played for two, You've played
- 16:24Speaker 2: you know, it's just it's different.
- 16:26Speaker 1: It's different.
- 16:26Speaker 2: It's different. And Chicago was one of those places as well.
- 16:29Speaker 5: It very much is, and you know, it's it's a
- 16:31Speaker 5: little bit easier just because like the way I like
- 16:34Speaker 5: to talk about it is you got the Midwest people
- 16:36Speaker 5: a little more laid back kind of a little bit.
- 16:40Speaker 5: And then you got in the Northeast, which is you know,
- 16:43Speaker 5: you cross the street wrong and you're getting you know,
- 16:45Speaker 5: you're getting rid of culed about it.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Well, you guys had a Boston connection you should talk about.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Well did the dude you signing too? Was like full
- 16:53Speaker 2: circle moment for me because in eight when I was
- 16:56Speaker 2: diagnosed with cancer, John was my It was part of
- 17:00Speaker 2: my inspiration. It was Lance Armstrong and John Lester. Yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 2: and I was in Boston and there was a rain
- 17:06Speaker 2: delay at the stadium in THEO. I said, Hey, do
- 17:08Speaker 2: you want to go down and meet Lester and Tito
- 17:12Speaker 2: and see the clubhouse and stuff? And I was like
- 17:14Speaker 2: absolutely So little does John know that he's bringing some
- 17:18Speaker 2: minor leaguer in that's gonna pep them up, like probably
- 17:21Speaker 2: get word, Hey, this kid just got diagnosed with cancer.
- 17:24Speaker 2: And he brings me in and changed my life. He
- 17:26Speaker 2: tells me, hey, man, like you're gonna go through this,
- 17:28Speaker 2: You're gonna feel good, You're gonna feel bad on days
- 17:30Speaker 2: you feel good, Go out and be yourself. Go be
- 17:33Speaker 2: a kid. And like I still send that message every
- 17:37Speaker 2: single kid I ever talked to, because it's true.
- 17:41Speaker 5: Well, and especially with cancer, man, it's so hard because
- 17:43Speaker 5: you're going through the treatment and you know the feeling
- 17:45Speaker 5: of it where you know, some days after treatment you
- 17:48Speaker 5: wake up you're like, man, I could go do my
- 17:51Speaker 5: normal training and hit and run and do all that stuff.
- 17:53Speaker 5: And then some days you feel like you can't get.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Out of bed. Yeah, like you were just like to
- 17:57Speaker 2: go to the.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Bathroom is a damn I'm you know, spectacle.
- 18:03Speaker 2: So you you telling me that though, and you kind
- 18:06Speaker 2: of showing me that way.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Was this before or after you fainted exactly?
- 18:10Speaker 2: So I'm in We're in. Yeah, bro, it was because
- 18:14Speaker 2: I just had my first treatment like a day before,
- 18:16Speaker 2: but it does. Your first one doesn't kick in for
- 18:18Speaker 2: like two or three days. So we go to the game,
- 18:21Speaker 2: and I'm like trying to be strong, right, I'm eighteen
- 18:23Speaker 2: years old. I'm on top of the world, Like I've
- 18:26Speaker 2: got to show these executives that like I'm the guy
- 18:29Speaker 2: right like, and he's showing me around and then we're
- 18:32Speaker 2: talking and he's telling me all this stuff and it's
- 18:34Speaker 2: all hitting me like I have fucking cancer, Like I
- 18:38Speaker 2: didn't even know what cancer was. And all of a
- 18:41Speaker 2: sudden we're in like this little hallway. I just like
- 18:43Speaker 2: drop and John just goes, can we get this kidd
- 18:47Speaker 2: of water?
- 18:48Speaker 3: Bro?
- 18:48Speaker 2: I'm not kidding, like I'm so embarrassed right, and everything
- 18:54Speaker 2: hits me and I just fall down to my knees
- 18:56Speaker 2: and like thought I was gonna die. And he's like,
- 18:59Speaker 2: can we get him a water? And then fast forward
- 19:02Speaker 2: to spring training next year. John is it's a spring
- 19:06Speaker 2: training game. I don't know what the team must have
- 19:08Speaker 2: been on the road. He didn't feel like going or something,
- 19:10Speaker 2: so he's pitching on the back fields. So I was
- 19:13Speaker 2: back in camp and they called me over one of
- 19:15Speaker 2: the minor league, you know, slap dicks, to come over
- 19:18Speaker 2: and face him. And I was so excited. And I
- 19:23Speaker 2: got two at bats off John Lester. I was like, fuck, yeah,
- 19:26Speaker 2: I'm pumped, Like I wonder if he remembers me. There's
- 19:28Speaker 2: no way he remembered me. I get two at bats,
- 19:31Speaker 2: I see six pitches and I strike out twice, strike one,
- 19:35Speaker 2: strike two, strike three twice, and I got home. I
- 19:40Speaker 2: got home and I called my mom and dad and
- 19:42Speaker 2: I was so excited. I was like, guys, they picked
- 19:45Speaker 2: me to face John Lester, Like do you think he
- 19:48Speaker 2: remembered me.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Now that you say that, I actually no, I do
- 19:51Speaker 1: remember it.
- 19:52Speaker 5: But now that you say that it was the six pitches,
- 19:55Speaker 5: I think that's where where Tech invented the front hip cutter.
- 20:00Speaker 2: At that makes sense.
- 20:02Speaker 1: We've been Yeah, we've been working, you know, I've been.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Just for me.
- 20:05Speaker 3: I ever seen that in the minor league.
- 20:08Speaker 5: Never, And I think they called you over because you
- 20:10Speaker 5: were lefty, and it was like, all right, we're throwing
- 20:12Speaker 5: the front.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Please John, don't. This is why they say don't meet
- 20:15Speaker 2: your heroes, just give it to me. But then in
- 20:20Speaker 2: twenty fourteen, we're at the same All Star game and
- 20:23Speaker 2: another full circle moment for me. Right, this is a
- 20:25Speaker 2: guy I like leaned on hard through my cancer treatment
- 20:29Speaker 2: and process, and I like go up to him like, hey,
- 20:32Speaker 2: like kind of remember me, and he did or he
- 20:35Speaker 2: played it off like he did.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I did.
- 20:36Speaker 2: You still play it off and we're talking. I'm just hey, man, like,
- 20:41Speaker 2: Chicago's a great place, trying to recruit him that in Minnesota,
- 20:44Speaker 2: and then you sign it. It's just like it was
- 20:48Speaker 2: the best feeling ever, but I left out after I fainted.
- 20:53Speaker 2: His very next start was his arguably most special start
- 20:57Speaker 2: of your career. Which I take full credit for. He
- 21:01Speaker 2: threw a no hitter. You remind me he threw a
- 21:03Speaker 2: no hitter after he met with me and the Italian
- 21:06Speaker 2: family that I have. It's all numbers and signs, So
- 21:10Speaker 2: him throwing the no hitter was signs from the heavens.
- 21:13Speaker 2: It was all for me.
- 21:15Speaker 3: It felt bad for you. Yeah, yeah, a little vand
- 21:17Speaker 3: in front of that's so great?
- 21:20Speaker 4: All right, I want to fast forward to sixteen. All right, Yeah,
- 21:24Speaker 4: we talked a little bit about that. I'm going to
- 21:26Speaker 4: read off your stats nineteen and five a two O
- 21:30Speaker 4: two era thirty two games started, two hundred and two innings,
- 21:33Speaker 4: second in the cy Young lowest era, and whip of
- 21:37Speaker 4: your career two complete games, three and one in the playoffs,
- 21:42Speaker 4: six games five started, thirty five innings in the postseason
- 21:47Speaker 4: with a two to oh two.
- 21:49Speaker 3: What's your favorite stat in that?
- 21:51Speaker 1: Seriously, two hundred inings.
- 21:52Speaker 3: I knew you were going to say that you loved posting, bro.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Why, I know why.
- 21:59Speaker 5: If you would have read this starts, I probably would
- 22:01Speaker 5: have gone one one A starts and then one B
- 22:04Speaker 5: innings because it means you means that I'm accountable for
- 22:10Speaker 5: my teammates. The hardest part of a picture. So like
- 22:15Speaker 5: you guys, you know later in your career you didn't
- 22:17Speaker 5: play every day, but you had to post every day
- 22:19Speaker 5: right like you were there, something hits the fane. You
- 22:22Speaker 5: got to go in the game. You gotta be ready
- 22:24Speaker 5: my ass for four days, go team, I have no
- 22:30Speaker 5: I have If.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I don't know, I mean I saw your skip for
- 22:34Speaker 2: those four days and it was literally a dream golf
- 22:38Speaker 2: Come on now. The next day was some sort of
- 22:41Speaker 2: fast food in the clubhouse. The myth issue.
- 22:44Speaker 5: If it was a day game, yes, If it was
- 22:46Speaker 5: a night game, well probably feels golfing.
- 22:48Speaker 2: But definitely you know what you know you taught me,
- 22:53Speaker 2: which you never even talked about this. It was just
- 22:55Speaker 2: by example. And leading by example is you literally, as
- 23:00Speaker 2: a pitcher would stay out all night. You'd have fun
- 23:04Speaker 2: and enjoy. But the next day I saw you one
- 23:08Speaker 2: of the first guys in the weight room busting your ass,
- 23:11Speaker 2: and it's like you didn't need to do that, Like
- 23:13Speaker 2: your resume and your pedigree spoke for itself, but to
- 23:16Speaker 2: see you do that after the night out meant more
- 23:19Speaker 2: than just to see you do it after a good
- 23:21Speaker 2: start or something, because that's what it takes to be
- 23:23Speaker 2: a professional, and seeing you do that every day, weekend
- 23:25Speaker 2: and week out was like, it was so cool to
- 23:28Speaker 2: watch you.
- 23:28Speaker 5: And I mean they learned that in Boston with you know,
- 23:31Speaker 5: with Beckett, and you know, I kind of got thrown
- 23:33Speaker 5: under his his wing early in his in my career,
- 23:37Speaker 5: early in his career, and Beckett was that way. It
- 23:41Speaker 5: was just hey man, you got to out prepare the
- 23:43Speaker 5: other guy, you know. And I never looked I wasn't
- 23:47Speaker 5: like Sheill would always look at who he was facing
- 23:50Speaker 5: in five days and be like, all right, I'm gonna
- 23:53Speaker 5: he wasn't. He was big in the weight room, but
- 23:55Speaker 5: not big in the weight room. He was more of
- 23:58Speaker 5: a I'm gonna outstudy this guy. I'm going to have
- 24:01Speaker 5: a better game plan than him, I'm going to last
- 24:02Speaker 5: longer in the game than him, and I'm I'm just
- 24:05Speaker 5: going to outperform him. He was thinking, like I'm competing
- 24:09Speaker 5: against that guy. I never liked that analogy. I like
- 24:13Speaker 5: because I don't ever face that dude, right, Like, I'm
- 24:16Speaker 5: not I'm not going against him, he's pitching on the
- 24:20Speaker 5: other side. I'm going against the team, right And so
- 24:23Speaker 5: like I learned that if I'm prepared, and my teammates
- 24:27Speaker 5: know I'm prepared, they're going to play harder behind me.
- 24:31Speaker 5: Not to say that people take games off or plays
- 24:33Speaker 5: off or whatever, but we were ready.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Yeah, you took what I'm saying, like you knew that
- 24:38Speaker 1: I had ready.
- 24:38Speaker 2: We had you and we had him, so we knew
- 24:41Speaker 2: we were What was the line you said yesterday with
- 24:43Speaker 2: the three pound fishing pool.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Oh you couldn't put a three pound fishing line in
- 24:46Speaker 1: my ass.
- 24:46Speaker 2: That was That was all most of the defenders, like
- 24:50Speaker 2: everyone was on edge as far as like you better
- 24:53Speaker 2: be fucking ready and the same with life you you, Yeah,
- 24:56Speaker 2: like the Cowboys demanded that respect and it it was real.
- 25:00Speaker 4: Well when you guys, you we watched you prepare obviously
- 25:04Speaker 4: like I just caught you, but like you had a
- 25:07Speaker 4: you were the most routine oriented pitcher I've ever been around.
- 25:11Speaker 2: I could take it through your entire routine right now. Yeah,
- 25:13Speaker 2: it starts the day before you're doing your film, sometime
- 25:16Speaker 2: before the game, uh after the game, the night before
- 25:20Speaker 2: you start, you pour yourself a stiff crown in sprite,
- 25:25Speaker 2: right as a sleeper. As a sleeper, you get in,
- 25:29Speaker 2: you do your.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Flush day right. It's like you it was that the treadmill.
- 25:33Speaker 2: No, this is this is the start day, the start day.
- 25:35Speaker 2: You get in, you do your bobs. Tewksberry shout outs,
- 25:38Speaker 2: one of the greatest sports psychologists.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Put his headphones in.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Headphones, do your cards, go over your skinner report again,
- 25:44Speaker 2: take your little cat nap and then you throw on Well,
- 25:48Speaker 2: first off, I forgot the Superstition's boxers. Are you wearing
- 25:52Speaker 2: those today?
- 25:52Speaker 1: No, I'm not.
- 25:53Speaker 2: John had these boxers that he wore that two pair,
- 25:56Speaker 2: one pair.
- 25:56Speaker 5: I wore so much the crops got worn out of
- 25:59Speaker 5: them and I actually took them to a tailor had
- 26:04Speaker 5: new fabric put in them.
- 26:06Speaker 3: And then you're a lucky boxer.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I hadn't heard that.
- 26:08Speaker 5: And then, uh, for Christmas one year, my wife got
- 26:12Speaker 5: tired of seeing these holy boxers, so she got me
- 26:15Speaker 5: a set. So normally I wear like the tight ones,
- 26:19Speaker 5: the briefs or whatever they're called.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Yeah, but on start Day they're like the loose the
- 26:22Speaker 2: loose ones.
- 26:23Speaker 5: Okay, And so one Christmas she gets me these this
- 26:26Speaker 5: box of three from Ralph Laurin or whatever, and gets
- 26:29Speaker 5: the Sanctuary logo put on them. And they're all three
- 26:32Speaker 5: different colors. So in spring training that year, I had
- 26:34Speaker 5: test runs, so like I wore.
- 26:37Speaker 1: This pair, Yeah, which one?
- 26:39Speaker 5: If I pitched good in this one, all right, we're
- 26:41Speaker 5: gonna give this one another run if it doesn't go
- 26:43Speaker 5: well to the next one. And then by the season
- 26:45Speaker 5: I had a pair and then I wore that pair
- 26:47Speaker 5: of the rest of the time.
- 26:48Speaker 3: And the end the Camo cam.
- 26:51Speaker 2: That was like I remember too, like you being one
- 26:54Speaker 2: of my guys. I looked up to the most and
- 26:57Speaker 2: I tried to get that and you had the lifts
- 27:00Speaker 2: cleats that one year. It was like we did that
- 27:02Speaker 2: a couple of years.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it was cool.
- 27:04Speaker 2: But then you do that, then you then you just
- 27:07Speaker 2: start with the laser focusing in yeaheah.
- 27:10Speaker 6: But your superstition five o'clock, the five o'clock five o'clock
- 27:13Speaker 6: is I always had to go to you and do
- 27:15Speaker 6: the scouting report because he'd be getting rubbed down on
- 27:17Speaker 6: the table and we just go over the scouting part
- 27:19Speaker 6: again for like you had already done it and you
- 27:22Speaker 6: were if you had anything, it was it was like, hey,
- 27:25Speaker 6: we want to throw this guy cut her in.
- 27:27Speaker 4: He'd be like no, no, Back'd be like no, no, no, babies,
- 27:29Speaker 4: no babies.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Back the no babies, back door no babies. I was like, okay,
- 27:32Speaker 3: we're throwing the back door cutter. This guy it was
- 27:36Speaker 3: you were you were you? Weres a professional well of
- 27:39Speaker 3: a play.
- 27:39Speaker 5: But also too like I realized at an early age
- 27:41Speaker 5: with the routine. You know, I get kind of thrown
- 27:44Speaker 5: in to Game four of the World Series and seven.
- 27:48Speaker 5: You know, I'm twenty two years old and I'm in
- 27:51Speaker 5: the bullpen coming off cancer. The year before, Yeah, coming
- 27:53Speaker 5: off cancer. I had no eyebrows. I had less hair
- 27:55Speaker 5: than I have now when I showed up the spring
- 27:57Speaker 5: training and you know, go through the season, up and
- 28:02Speaker 5: down the season, like just physically mentally, get called up,
- 28:07Speaker 5: went down for a start, YadA, YadA, get to the playoffs,
- 28:11Speaker 5: and you know, luckily John Ferrell I heard this later on.
- 28:15Speaker 1: He fought for me to be on the roster. Fought
- 28:18Speaker 1: he wanted to be on the roster.
- 28:19Speaker 5: He thought that I could be, you know, some sort
- 28:22Speaker 5: of guy in the bullpen that could help out or whatever.
- 28:26Speaker 1: So I'm in the bullpen.
- 28:28Speaker 5: Way he pitches game I think it was Game four
- 28:31Speaker 5: in Cleveland and comes out because he's hurt. He hurt
- 28:35Speaker 5: his arm, and so I get called in the office
- 28:40Speaker 5: after we win, and they're like, hey, you're going to
- 28:42Speaker 5: get a start in this series at some point.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Well, now I'm back to being a starter.
- 28:46Speaker 3: So what do you do?
- 28:47Speaker 5: You immediately fall right back into your routine, right, And
- 28:51Speaker 5: I just remember being so nervous going out there. But
- 28:53Speaker 5: I'm like, all right, I have you know, lake kicks here,
- 28:56Speaker 5: I have this stretch or I have just kept falling
- 29:00Speaker 5: back to that, right, Like I'd get to the outfield
- 29:03Speaker 5: and I'd look around and start, you know, getting the jitters.
- 29:07Speaker 5: All right, what am I doing? What is my warm
- 29:09Speaker 5: up routine?
- 29:09Speaker 2: Coming back?
- 29:10Speaker 5: And then now you start throwing, and first throw you're like,
- 29:15Speaker 5: oh god, okay, all right, where do I go from here?
- 29:18Speaker 5: You know, I do ten throws here, and then I
- 29:20Speaker 5: go here, and then I then you get into the
- 29:22Speaker 5: bullpen and now, like my routine was so locked in
- 29:25Speaker 5: from my warm up that everything just went away. Now
- 29:28Speaker 5: it's like, all right, three fastballs, three fastballs, this.
- 29:31Speaker 1: This boom boom boom. Now you get in the game.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Now you're pitching.
- 29:35Speaker 5: And so at an early age, I learned like all
- 29:38Speaker 5: the routine actually calms you down, you know what I'm saying.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Like, So then from that moment on I was like,
- 29:44Speaker 1: this is what I'm doing.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Yeah, it prepares yes, way to handle it.
- 29:48Speaker 2: So what happened with what got lost? Between spring training
- 29:53Speaker 2: all the PFPS and backfield work. What happened? Where was
- 29:58Speaker 2: the routine on pickoffs?
- 30:00Speaker 1: There was an o routine?
- 30:02Speaker 2: No I know, but we did it. We nailed it. Yeah,
- 30:04Speaker 2: we did it. Took a very long time, we got it.
- 30:07Speaker 2: But what the fuck happened?
- 30:10Speaker 5: So I tell people this, if I knew, I would
- 30:13Speaker 5: fix it.
- 30:14Speaker 2: We fixed it, though, Well, it's.
- 30:16Speaker 5: Easy when it's just like when you go, you know,
- 30:18Speaker 5: I tell I have you know, playing golf and stuff
- 30:21Speaker 5: with people and you get to know new guys and
- 30:25Speaker 5: you know, they get a few beverages in them and
- 30:27Speaker 5: they think they could have liquid courage and ask whatever
- 30:29Speaker 5: they want. And they ask about that, and I go, hey,
- 30:31Speaker 5: with all due respect, with all due respect, I'm like, hey, dude,
- 30:33Speaker 5: have you ever stood over a chip and you're like,
- 30:34Speaker 5: I got this and then all of a sudden you
- 30:37Speaker 5: spas them and you can't hit it.
- 30:39Speaker 1: They go, oh yeah all the time. I go like,
- 30:42Speaker 1: it's the same thing.
- 30:43Speaker 2: What did it feel like?
- 30:44Speaker 3: Though?
- 30:44Speaker 2: When we picked off Tommy Famo that later the announcers
- 30:48Speaker 2: were talking shit too.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Oh Tommy fans just steal Timcarver.
- 30:53Speaker 2: I'm over there literally like John, I got you, just
- 30:56Speaker 2: throw it.
- 30:57Speaker 4: And I hate it when we started throwing over because
- 30:58Speaker 4: I'm like, I love throwing these guys out there trying
- 31:01Speaker 4: to He's like under a one to the plate, you know,
- 31:03Speaker 4: like yeah.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Well, and that's so good.
- 31:05Speaker 5: That's the other part. Yeah, like the reporters out throwing over.
- 31:09Speaker 5: The reporters ask you about it, and I'm like, listen,
- 31:11Speaker 5: you know, in life, if you're not good at something,
- 31:13Speaker 5: you try to get better at something else to basically
- 31:16Speaker 5: negate that.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Sure, right, So I knew I was not good at that.
- 31:21Speaker 5: Okay, Well, not good is probably not the right word
- 31:23Speaker 5: to say terrible at that, And I knew, okay. In
- 31:27Speaker 5: order to hopefully fix this, if some capacity also shout
- 31:33Speaker 5: out to Joe, Joe was great with it. If there
- 31:36Speaker 5: if there was any other manager, it would have been
- 31:39Speaker 5: way worse. We would have been an issue and it
- 31:41Speaker 5: wouldn't have been handled properly. Joe handled it great, and
- 31:45Speaker 5: he's the one that taught me. He's like, if you're
- 31:46Speaker 5: not good at something, get better at something else. So
- 31:49Speaker 5: I said, okay, I'm going to and you know in
- 31:51Speaker 5: today's game with the pitch clock, obviously it would be
- 31:54Speaker 5: Nolan Boyd. But I got better at holding the ball
- 31:57Speaker 5: bar in my look, slidestepping. We implemented the the modified
- 32:02Speaker 5: pitch out. You know you did things over at first base,
- 32:08Speaker 5: having hobby at second base with the tag.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Oh no, we may do. Yeah, yeah, we may do.
- 32:12Speaker 5: But like so twenty fifteenth, for example, I think gave
- 32:14Speaker 5: up like forty stolen bases led the league in that.
- 32:17Speaker 5: So I had to come to Jesus in the offseason,
- 32:20Speaker 5: all right, if I'm not good at this, what can
- 32:22Speaker 5: I do? And worked on those things. I think the
- 32:24Speaker 5: next year we gave up twelve.
- 32:25Speaker 4: Yeah, and I stunked to start it too, Like I
- 32:27Speaker 4: wasn't throwing good. I remember to start that season, had
- 32:30Speaker 4: had to do a lot of that was just you know, you.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Found your you.
- 32:33Speaker 4: We worked on it in spring training. Remember we started
- 32:35Speaker 4: like the bounce pass on some of the bunks and
- 32:37Speaker 4: different stuff like, but it was we knew they were going.
- 32:41Speaker 4: It was like and you were so fast.
- 32:43Speaker 3: It was funny. We had, like you said, we had
- 32:44Speaker 3: risen hobby.
- 32:45Speaker 4: It made it a lot of fun I want to
- 32:47Speaker 4: go back to we talked about those stats, and I
- 32:51Speaker 4: look back.
- 32:52Speaker 3: On twenty sixteen. Do you have a favorite start outside
- 32:55Speaker 3: the let's let's put the playoffs aside. Do you have
- 32:57Speaker 3: a favorite start that year?
- 32:58Speaker 4: Because you got off to a little you put so
- 33:00Speaker 4: much pressure on yourself. Yeah, you came in there. I
- 33:03Speaker 4: remember coming in the dugout once that was like a
- 33:05Speaker 4: third start, and you you were just okay, and you
- 33:09Speaker 4: came up in the dugout and you were like you.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Got anything, you see anything? And I was lost.
- 33:14Speaker 4: I was like, compete, just fucking I was losing my
- 33:18Speaker 4: mind because if if you got take another game, didn't
- 33:22Speaker 4: do good. I didn't get to play, Just so we know,
- 33:25Speaker 4: I didn't get my last at bat. If he came
- 33:26Speaker 4: out of the game, it wasn't any did you get to.
- 33:28Speaker 5: Play if it was the bus, or if it was
- 33:31Speaker 5: a hotel room, or if it was in the club.
- 33:33Speaker 5: I think it was in the clubhouse because I think
- 33:34Speaker 5: you kind of embarrassed me in front of everybody.
- 33:37Speaker 1: But he comes in and one of those mediocre starts.
- 33:41Speaker 5: And you know, I think we're all we ended up
- 33:43Speaker 5: winning the game, we're all high five and afterwards doing
- 33:45Speaker 5: the party thing. And he comes in and he goes,
- 33:48Speaker 5: damn it, John, He goes, if you would pitch better,
- 33:50Speaker 5: I could get more at bats.
- 33:53Speaker 3: He goes, if you stink, I don't get to hit.
- 33:55Speaker 2: I remember it well. But you said the story about
- 34:00Speaker 2: was it coming into thirteen being like accountable, And I
- 34:04Speaker 2: know you weren't happy with your twenty fifteen year, which
- 34:07Speaker 2: ended up being a really good year. It was just
- 34:09Speaker 2: it was a grind for you all year, right, like
- 34:12Speaker 2: peaks and valleys, but ended up being a solid year.
- 34:15Speaker 2: When we get swept by the Mets, Fucking Daniel Murphy
- 34:19Speaker 2: still have nightmares. But we come into spring training in
- 34:22Speaker 2: sixteen and everyone's like, we're we have already won the
- 34:27Speaker 2: World Series, and that really started with you. You're like,
- 34:29Speaker 2: we already won. Just press play like the script. He
- 34:33Speaker 2: had shirts for us made literally with buck boats.
- 34:36Speaker 5: On them, right, that's a Johnny Gomes thing. Yeah, to
- 34:39Speaker 5: go back before I answer that, To go back to
- 34:41Speaker 5: your question, there's two starts that stand out in my mind.
- 34:45Speaker 5: One ended up being a good start, didn't start out
- 34:47Speaker 5: very well. The other one was probably my favorite one
- 34:50Speaker 5: because I didn't expect to get the opportunity to finish
- 34:53Speaker 5: the game. But we had a late season game in Pittsburgh,
- 34:57Speaker 5: tight race, two to one game.
- 35:00Speaker 1: I get in.
- 35:01Speaker 5: A jam in the eighth, end up punching out the
- 35:05Speaker 5: dude that uh Coglin broke his leg the shortstop. Yeah yeah,
- 35:14Speaker 5: Kim South Korean Korean and struck him out. Big situation.
- 35:21Speaker 5: I'm out already at like I think I'm at like
- 35:23Speaker 5: that hundred mark fist pump fuck. Yeah, let's go give
- 35:28Speaker 5: it to the closing. Like I'm walking off the mountain
- 35:30Speaker 5: thinking because Joe usual didn't let you go, especially a
- 35:32Speaker 5: close game. I getting the DOUG and I sit down.
- 35:35Speaker 3: I'm like, somebody shake my hand.
- 35:41Speaker 1: I'm like Boss, Joe, nobody, all right, here we go.
- 35:46Speaker 5: And then Boss comes down with like one out or
- 35:48Speaker 5: two outs and he's like, hey you good. I said, yeah,
- 35:50Speaker 5: let's go. And we end up finishing that game, and
- 35:53Speaker 5: I like, not that I was happy he gave me
- 35:56Speaker 5: the opportunity, but I was happy he gave me the
- 35:59Speaker 5: opportunity to finish that game.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Then the other one September two September, it was a priority.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Clinched about it, No.
- 36:05Speaker 1: We were.
- 36:06Speaker 2: It was on the verge.
- 36:07Speaker 5: Yeah, it wasn't quite there, but it was a big
- 36:09Speaker 5: game against them, and you know, one of those deals,
- 36:12Speaker 5: the other one ended up being a good game. Uhnck
- 36:16Speaker 5: went seven, seven or eight? Day game in Atlanta home?
- 36:22Speaker 3: Was that the Freddie Freeman day? Oh my gosh.
- 36:24Speaker 5: So we're in the I'm in there getting rubbed down
- 36:26Speaker 5: before the game. ROSSI comes in. We're going over the thing,
- 36:29Speaker 5: and I'm like, hey, I like, I like.
- 36:30Speaker 4: First of all, he hometown, like, lives in Atlanta, wants
- 36:34Speaker 4: to beat him bad day game. I was a brave
- 36:37Speaker 4: You always want to beat your former team, right, Like,
- 36:39Speaker 4: it's just kind of natural.
- 36:40Speaker 3: So we're locked in day game. It's hot as heck,
- 36:43Speaker 3: and it's one hundred and sixty four agre.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, you're seven feet from hell Ol Turner.
- 36:49Speaker 5: Oh yeah, so actually that wasn't sixteen, that was fifteeneen.
- 36:53Speaker 1: So anyway, sorry, I got me years wrong, but played.
- 36:57Speaker 5: Yes.
- 36:57Speaker 1: So we go over the.
- 36:58Speaker 5: Thing and I'm like, hey, I like two strike breaking
- 37:00Speaker 5: ball to Freddy like Chase. He goes, no, you cannot
- 37:03Speaker 5: throw a strike breaking ball to him?
- 37:05Speaker 2: You can?
- 37:05Speaker 4: He murders, well, yeah, vers is forty seven miles.
- 37:11Speaker 3: I mean you can't.
- 37:14Speaker 5: So it's not about man, It's not about so anyway.
- 37:17Speaker 5: So first inning, something happens. Guy gets on second base,
- 37:21Speaker 5: two outs, Freddy's up, and I'm shaking and shaking and shaking,
- 37:26Speaker 5: and you can see ROSSI. He's just sitting back there,
- 37:28Speaker 5: going and keeps throwing stuff down and he won't put
- 37:31Speaker 5: down curveball time.
- 37:34Speaker 1: He looks at me. He goes, curveball, yep, don't bury it.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Base it the right. We're down one nothing. We come
- 37:44Speaker 1: in the dugout. He yard sales his whole catcher's gear here.
- 37:49Speaker 1: He goes, fuck it.
- 37:50Speaker 3: Just throw it, just throw whatever you want.
- 37:52Speaker 5: I'm not putting down any more. Signs you throw it,
- 37:55Speaker 5: I'll catch it. And I'm like following him like a
- 37:57Speaker 5: lost puppy dog. Come on, bro, don't give up on me.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Don't give up.
- 38:00Speaker 5: Almost that I meant to bounce it. He goes, but
- 38:02Speaker 5: I told you no strike breaking both John.
- 38:04Speaker 3: We just went over it.
- 38:05Speaker 2: We just went Do you think I did it on purpose?
- 38:09Speaker 1: He goes, no, but throw whatever you want.
- 38:11Speaker 5: So we sit down. We're in the air conditioning, we're
- 38:13Speaker 5: all drinking our water. Three outs, go to run out.
- 38:17Speaker 5: He goes, all right, we're good.
- 38:21Speaker 2: You had to get off your chest.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it was that was so mad.
- 38:26Speaker 5: It was I mean, it was hot, it was all this,
- 38:28Speaker 5: but you pitched, you did pitch. We we end up
- 38:30Speaker 5: winning the game.
- 38:31Speaker 2: We get off to historic twenty seven to nine start.
- 38:36Speaker 2: We're rolling, right what it was? Yeah, we were, we
- 38:38Speaker 2: were rolling, Yeah, and everyone, I mean spring training, we
- 38:42Speaker 2: already had the mindset of we're winning the World Series,
- 38:45Speaker 2: there's no one stopping us, and we get off to
- 38:46Speaker 2: this start. For me, there was a few games that
- 38:49Speaker 2: set out early on, but I want to know from
- 38:51Speaker 2: you what stood out on that team early that was like,
- 38:54Speaker 2: holy shit, we're gonna We're gonna do this.
- 38:57Speaker 5: I just feel like we were relentless early, you know
- 38:59Speaker 5: what I mean, And like when we had a chance
- 39:01Speaker 5: to step on somebody's throat, we stepped on it early
- 39:03Speaker 5: and we made a point and Joe Joel was harped
- 39:06Speaker 5: on it. I remember Joe spring training, He's like, all
- 39:09Speaker 5: I care about y'all get off to a fast start. Yeah,
- 39:12Speaker 5: that's all he talked about. Quick start, because if you
- 39:16Speaker 5: don't get off to that quick start, there's gonna be
- 39:18Speaker 5: a team that does. And now you're chasing and that's
- 39:20Speaker 5: hard to do. But I just remember we freaking we
- 39:24Speaker 5: came out and it was like, I mean we were
- 39:28Speaker 5: in LA and it was like.
- 39:32Speaker 2: And we just went dinner. How much did we spend
- 39:34Speaker 2: out that team dinner?
- 39:35Speaker 5: Well, we talked about last night. I thought it was more,
- 39:37Speaker 5: but I think we agreed it was fifteen.
- 39:38Speaker 4: It was it was over fifteen because I think THEO
- 39:41Speaker 4: had told us like, hey, we're going to give you
- 39:43Speaker 4: this much money.
- 39:43Speaker 3: We're coming from Vegas.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Let's losch So we have spring two spring training games
- 39:48Speaker 2: in Vegas, which we blow it out on. But they'd
- 39:52Speaker 2: only wanted us there for one or two nights, not
- 39:54Speaker 2: the third night. We had it off heay, so they're like,
- 39:56Speaker 2: all right, we're gonna like they're forcing us to go
- 39:59Speaker 2: to Anaheim. Whin whole team wanted to stay in Vegas
- 40:01Speaker 2: because we all wanted to enjoy. And so THEO and
- 40:05Speaker 2: mister Ricketts agreed that they would buy us a huge
- 40:07Speaker 2: team dinner, which once John came over, he was usually
- 40:10Speaker 2: the one him and Lackey would fight for who's paying
- 40:12Speaker 2: for the team dinners. And we have this beautiful team
- 40:15Speaker 2: dinner and then we go out we roll.
- 40:19Speaker 1: L Angels Angels. Yeah, it was the Angels.
- 40:22Speaker 2: We take I think two three I'm saying from the Diamondbacks.
- 40:27Speaker 3: Sure, we got hurt.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Shore, we got hurt. Lacky gave up like five.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Or six early, and we end up winning that game.
- 40:32Speaker 2: We ended up destroying them in that game.
- 40:35Speaker 1: A lead off homer, yeah, he was.
- 40:37Speaker 4: He never does that first fastball. Here it comes and
- 40:40Speaker 4: he nobody ever swings. Yeah, and he gave them a homer.
- 40:43Speaker 2: But what was were some things just being relentless.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:47Speaker 2: And then because getting off to the good start was
- 40:50Speaker 2: key because I thought.
- 40:51Speaker 4: The messaging in spring training you're talking about, Joe, The
- 40:53Speaker 4: messaging in spring training was so like, expectations are good. Embrace, yeah, right,
- 41:00Speaker 4: embrace it embraced the targets, target which the targets on
- 41:02Speaker 4: our back because we went so far and everybody came
- 41:04Speaker 4: in hungry. So that was the most fun spring trade
- 41:06Speaker 4: decks came back.
- 41:07Speaker 2: We had a decks from that.
- 41:09Speaker 3: I was retiring. You guys make it fun.
- 41:10Speaker 2: We had all the skits with Bussy singing, the Kawasaki singing, Yeah,
- 41:18Speaker 2: the karaoke, the karaoke played drops of Jupiter on the
- 41:21Speaker 2: piano about me.
- 41:23Speaker 3: It was a good time. It was a good time.
- 41:24Speaker 3: I want to go back.
- 41:25Speaker 4: You brought up something that we're just thinking about stories here.
- 41:28Speaker 4: But you said Pittsburgh. Yeah, I want to hear I
- 41:31Speaker 4: want to hear the Pittsburgh story when you came in
- 41:34Speaker 4: yelling at Riz bro We so.
- 41:38Speaker 2: That was right before the All Star break, right, and
- 41:40Speaker 2: we said Sunday morning before the All Star break. Keep
- 41:43Speaker 2: in mind, now we have two birds, because there's twelve
- 41:47Speaker 2: of us going to the All Star Game or whatever.
- 41:49Speaker 2: We have two private planes waiting for us after the game.
- 41:52Speaker 2: The morning of the game we roll in. We lost
- 41:55Speaker 2: nine of ten. We're getting shelled. If the offense does well,
- 41:59Speaker 2: the pitching sucked. Pitching does well, offense sucked. I'm riding high.
- 42:05Speaker 2: I go into the All Star break raaking. I'm like fourteen.
- 42:09Speaker 2: I'm like twelve or fifteen in that series, like on
- 42:12Speaker 2: a high. The game before John gives up three or
- 42:15Speaker 2: four runs, we end up losing. I go four for
- 42:17Speaker 2: five in the game.
- 42:18Speaker 1: I think I give up six with a homer.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Yeah, homer, shy of the cycle. It's not about.
- 42:25Speaker 5: I have not.
- 42:28Speaker 3: Remember well.
- 42:28Speaker 2: I remember this because I'm in the weight room the
- 42:32Speaker 2: Sunday morning before they all staring, and I knew that
- 42:35Speaker 2: night when the quote came out, I was like fuck.
- 42:37Speaker 2: I texted our media relations guy, Peter Chase, and I
- 42:39Speaker 2: was like, hey, this came out wrong, Like, is it
- 42:42Speaker 2: that bad? He's talking me off the ledge because I
- 42:44Speaker 2: know what's what's coming. So you read the quote please, Yeah,
- 42:47Speaker 2: I have the quote here.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Well before you read the quote, do you know how
- 42:52Speaker 1: I found out about that?
- 42:53Speaker 5: Oh?
- 42:53Speaker 2: I know, fucking Travis Woods. I know. I know. This
- 42:59Speaker 2: game isn't easy, said Anthony Rizzo, who went four for
- 43:02Speaker 2: five and was a home run shy of the cycle.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Feel myself, it's impossible to boat race the whole season
- 43:08Speaker 2: like we were doing. We just have to clean up
- 43:10Speaker 2: our pitching a little. We're talking, we're walking too many guys,
- 43:15Speaker 2: and that's not the formula. We've had a formula playing
- 43:17Speaker 2: good baseball, and we don't have it right now. Maybe
- 43:20Speaker 2: we have to mix a few cocktails together and figure
- 43:22Speaker 2: it out. But that's what it comes down to. I
- 43:25Speaker 2: knew right away when I said the pitching.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Also, if you read the whole thing, it's not as bad.
- 43:31Speaker 2: But John comes in Wood. He showed me John comes
- 43:35Speaker 2: in the next day start before the all stream. He's
- 43:38Speaker 2: not pitching the all Stagram right, No, So he's had
- 43:41Speaker 2: a good night, And I'm in the weight room. We're
- 43:45Speaker 2: watching Me and Tim Buster are watching Joel Ostein. Right,
- 43:48Speaker 2: it was like our Sunday mornings. They have a small,
- 43:52Speaker 2: little small weight the tiny little screen and Joel Ostin's on,
- 43:56Speaker 2: or one of the shows are on. And I'm rolling
- 44:00Speaker 2: on the ground like socks, just shorts and like maybe
- 44:03Speaker 2: a shirt and foam, rolling in such a vulnerable position.
- 44:07Speaker 2: And John comes in after Travis wood runs John, look
- 44:11Speaker 2: what Anthony said, Look what Rizzo said, like your little brother.
- 44:15Speaker 2: And he comes in. I've never seen him, this mad face,
- 44:19Speaker 2: beat red, lip quivering, standing over me.
- 44:23Speaker 7: If you ever fucking talk about our pitching staff again,
- 44:26Speaker 7: I'll fucking kill you.
- 44:27Speaker 2: And I was like, I'm so vulnerable, Like.
- 44:33Speaker 5: It wasn't the best choice of words that I said,
- 44:36Speaker 5: but obviously the night before was my start, so I
- 44:40Speaker 5: was still pissed. Sure, Like I said, if you read
- 44:44Speaker 5: the whole when you just read that off, that's the
- 44:46Speaker 5: first time I've ever heard the whole thing, of course,
- 44:48Speaker 5: because what it doesn't sound as bad as when Woody
- 44:51Speaker 5: just shows you we need to clean up our pitching staff.
- 44:55Speaker 7: If you we need to clean up our fucking you
- 44:57Speaker 7: never fucking talked about and I'm just looking at him like,
- 45:00Speaker 7: and I just remember the only thing I said to him,
- 45:02Speaker 7: and he couldn't do anything about it, say I'm sorry, John, I.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Messed up, and he didn't know what to do, and
- 45:08Speaker 2: he just kept quivering and he just walked out and
- 45:10Speaker 2: like the whole Later on we hugged it out and
- 45:13Speaker 2: calmed down, but I.
- 45:14Speaker 3: Was so stift.
- 45:15Speaker 4: Part of that is when you bring over winning players
- 45:18Speaker 4: and re establishing culture, right, It's like, you know, we
- 45:22Speaker 4: used to get pissed if somebody had a is always
- 45:25Speaker 4: there in front of their locker in.
- 45:26Speaker 3: A good game. You got to be there in the
- 45:28Speaker 3: bad game, you know what I mean?
- 45:29Speaker 4: Like you got to talk to the media like that's
- 45:30Speaker 4: a thing you're establishing as winners. And that's basically as
- 45:34Speaker 4: a veteran, a guy with two World Series rings coming
- 45:36Speaker 4: in and going, hey man, we don't bash each other
- 45:39Speaker 4: and that we're don't bash each other, and to the
- 45:41Speaker 4: media like you got like, I no shit, I wasn't
- 45:44Speaker 4: any good, you know, But that's that's the standard you
- 45:47Speaker 4: were brought up with in the winning culture. And it's
- 45:50Speaker 4: like that's how I think, that's how winning basically you.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Taught me a lesson that day that I carried with
- 45:55Speaker 2: me for the rest of my exactly career. And by
- 45:58Speaker 2: doing that, I grew up and I became a better leader.
- 46:02Speaker 2: And when it was my turn to go talk to someone,
- 46:05Speaker 2: I didn't scream at him, because as I got older,
- 46:08Speaker 2: the culture changed and you can't get the old school cowboys.
- 46:11Speaker 5: But I also knew at that time in our in
- 46:14Speaker 5: our relationship and our friendship. I knew that by me
- 46:17Speaker 5: saying that to you, in five minutes, you would be
- 46:22Speaker 5: fine with it, and in five minutes I would be
- 46:24Speaker 5: fine with it.
- 46:24Speaker 1: If I did that to.
- 46:25Speaker 5: Another player, yeah, it would be a long thing for
- 46:29Speaker 5: the whole you know, like I knew. And also too,
- 46:31Speaker 5: I knew if I did it loud enough that somebody
- 46:33Speaker 5: out here might hear it and be like, what did
- 46:36Speaker 5: Anthony say and look at it and go, oh, okay,
- 46:38Speaker 5: I need to pay attention to what I'm saying now, right.
- 46:43Speaker 5: I hate the fact that you were the guinea pig
- 46:44Speaker 5: on it, but no.
- 46:45Speaker 2: I love it.
- 46:45Speaker 1: You know, it is what it is.
- 46:47Speaker 3: I was. I was so it was like that your career.
- 46:50Speaker 2: I was eating dog. After that, I was so scared.
- 46:53Speaker 2: But again and then after we go to the All
- 46:55Speaker 2: Star Game and we have a great time.
- 46:57Speaker 1: I mean ten minutes later, we're fine.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Yeah, because that's what that team was. That was the
- 47:02Speaker 2: bond we had. And then we go into the All
- 47:04Speaker 2: Star Game, and then we go into the end of July.
- 47:08Speaker 2: We're playing the Mariners Sunday Night Baseball. We have a
- 47:12Speaker 2: huge i mean, I'm talking the biggest road trip of
- 47:15Speaker 2: the year coming up right, that's been playing out for
- 47:20Speaker 2: numerous reasons, for numerous reasons that we're going to get
- 47:22Speaker 2: to after the this play, and THEO calls you guys
- 47:26Speaker 2: into the office with Joe and they they're playing Seattle
- 47:31Speaker 2: Sunday Night Baseball and they want to give the starters
- 47:33Speaker 2: a rest, right.
- 47:34Speaker 1: And I think we had won the first two games.
- 47:36Speaker 1: We're going for the sweet.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Oh bro, we were rolling.
- 47:38Speaker 3: We're rolling.
- 47:38Speaker 2: We were rolling, we were rolling. So we bring up
- 47:41Speaker 2: a starter to a spot start.
- 47:44Speaker 5: And also, nothing against Brian Matis. It's not Brian Madis's fault.
- 47:48Speaker 2: No, it's just our team. Read our team was so solidified, right,
- 47:53Speaker 2: there's nothing that can break us. Well, we bring up
- 47:57Speaker 2: us for a spot start to give the guys a arrest,
- 47:59Speaker 2: and everyone's like, why fuck with why fuck with us?
- 48:02Speaker 2: Like this is working, and he ends up giving up
- 48:05Speaker 2: a bunch of runs early and we come back, and
- 48:09Speaker 2: that comeback was like probably the biggest moment I think
- 48:13Speaker 2: of the season for us, of like nothing can stop
- 48:16Speaker 2: us because I know this. The starters were all kind
- 48:19Speaker 2: of pissed off, like you're skipping my turn, like you're
- 48:22Speaker 2: messing with our routine. You guys are creatures of habit.
- 48:24Speaker 5: When it wasn't only that, it's the fact that it's
- 48:26Speaker 5: almost like when you're rolling and Joe's like, hey, I'm
- 48:29Speaker 5: gonna give you a day.
- 48:30Speaker 1: No, no, no, it didn't happen.
- 48:32Speaker 2: It didn't happen.
- 48:33Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying, Like, no, now, it's not
- 48:35Speaker 5: when I'm rolling, you roll me out there until I
- 48:38Speaker 5: don't have it anymore. And that's kind of the starter
- 48:41Speaker 5: because we had pitched so bad leading up to the
- 48:43Speaker 5: break and we all came back and it was like
- 48:47Speaker 5: we're back.
- 48:47Speaker 2: They were pissed. Yeah, well I remember the starting staff
- 48:50Speaker 2: and it wasn't like legit, man.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it's because we were we were back. We were rolling.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Everybody was.
- 48:56Speaker 5: It was we were feeding off each other, it was going,
- 48:58Speaker 5: it was it was good vibe, and we all knew
- 49:00Speaker 5: we had that off day coming up. And then every
- 49:02Speaker 5: you just follow the off day, right, everybody just gets
- 49:05Speaker 5: that extra day. Well, they wanted to give us two
- 49:07Speaker 5: extra days. Yep, because go ahead, Sorry.
- 49:10Speaker 2: No, no, it's And so we come back in this
- 49:13Speaker 2: game on Sunday Night baseball, which at the time was
- 49:15Speaker 2: the biggest deal to have Sunday Night baseball. And we're rallying, right,
- 49:21Speaker 2: and the old school away. When you're rallying, the starters
- 49:24Speaker 2: are in the clubhouse, throwing back some pops, having some
- 49:27Speaker 2: rally beers. So not only did you have a suicide squeeze,
- 49:30Speaker 2: but I want to know, a.
- 49:32Speaker 4: Suicide squeeze to win the game. I've still got my shirt.
- 49:34Speaker 4: I shud broad day bunt to win?
- 49:36Speaker 2: Johnny, we bring Lester in. It was like the tenth
- 49:39Speaker 2: or eleventh, isn't extra inning, Well, we'll check the tap.
- 49:43Speaker 2: Suicide squeezed, walk off wind Like big comeback had to
- 49:49Speaker 2: be a few pops deep because you were always for
- 49:51Speaker 2: the boys. But it was such a significant moment for
- 49:56Speaker 2: us looking back because of the unity that we all
- 49:59Speaker 2: came afterwards. What happened afterwards is something you never see
- 50:03Speaker 2: and you probably will never see again with walking into
- 50:05Speaker 2: the clubhouse with THEO.
- 50:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I got so much respect for THEO to that.
- 50:11Speaker 5: I mean I had respect for him, you know before
- 50:13Speaker 5: and in any profession, you're gonna have disagreements with your bosses, right,
- 50:17Speaker 5: like total nature, that's life.
- 50:19Speaker 1: But for him to come down and be like, hey,
- 50:22Speaker 1: that's on me.
- 50:23Speaker 2: He was apologizing to our team, to the whole team. Yeah,
- 50:26Speaker 2: and it wasn't anything against Brian mattis great dude. Yeah,
- 50:31Speaker 2: it was just what our team was building. And then
- 50:34Speaker 2: you just he kind of they claimed off waivers and
- 50:37Speaker 2: he came up for just a spot start, and it
- 50:39Speaker 2: was like him saying that to us was like wow,
- 50:42Speaker 2: like this is this is another reason why we're so special,
- 50:45Speaker 2: another reason why we're going to win the last game
- 50:48Speaker 2: of the year.
- 50:48Speaker 3: Yeah, his accountability in that moment.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Was which you just don't see. He's stele Epstein, he's
- 50:53Speaker 2: you know prom Yeah, he's a Hall of Famer and
- 50:56Speaker 2: he's incredible. So come to find out the next trip,
- 51:00Speaker 2: which we all knew was going on, mister Lester, the
- 51:04Speaker 2: most generous player I've ever played with in my entire career.
- 51:06Speaker 3: The greatest road trip of all time.
- 51:08Speaker 2: Of all time. We're going out west. We're going to Oakland.
- 51:10Speaker 2: We have an off day in Oakland, Thursday off day.
- 51:12Speaker 2: So we fly out Wednesday, Wednesday night we land or
- 51:16Speaker 2: Wednesday day game. We land Thursday. At San Francisco Airport.
- 51:20Speaker 2: John has a private plane for all the boys, the
- 51:23Speaker 2: eight of us to fly to Pebble Beach to play
- 51:27Speaker 2: Bebble Beach two nights day.
- 51:29Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, we got in that night, played the next day. No.
- 51:34Speaker 5: Yeah, because I that's that was the whole point of
- 51:36Speaker 5: the of the of the why I got mad of.
- 51:39Speaker 1: The pitching change. Okay, yes, we were rolling.
- 51:43Speaker 5: Personally, I was mad because I was supposed to pitch
- 51:48Speaker 5: the following day, I think the second day in Oakland,
- 51:54Speaker 5: but because of the pitching change, my day got No,
- 51:57Speaker 5: that doesn't make sense. I was supposed to pitch the
- 52:00Speaker 5: Wednesday day game, That's what it was, and because of
- 52:03Speaker 5: the start on Sunday, I get pushed back to the
- 52:04Speaker 5: Friday game in Oakland. So THEO tells us this, this
- 52:08Speaker 5: is before the whole Sunday night baseball game, and I
- 52:12Speaker 5: go I just I raised my hand. He's telling us,
- 52:14Speaker 5: I'm like eighth grader. Hey, THEO, I have a question. Listen,
- 52:19Speaker 5: I have set up around at Pebble Beats for eight dudes. Okay,
- 52:23Speaker 5: we have hotel rooms for staying there. I've got the
- 52:26Speaker 5: rounds taken care of, and I got a plane picking
- 52:29Speaker 5: us up and off and dropping us off.
- 52:32Speaker 1: Mind you, it's a twenty seven second flight.
- 52:36Speaker 5: And he looks at me and he goes, so you're
- 52:39Speaker 5: playing golf on Thursday. I said, well, that's my question.
- 52:42Speaker 5: I'm supposed to pitch on Friday now because you's fucked
- 52:44Speaker 5: with the rotation.
- 52:46Speaker 3: You fuck with my golf.
- 52:47Speaker 1: You fuck with not my balhap you fucked with Pebble right, yeah.
- 52:52Speaker 5: So and all the boys and all the boys, and
- 52:53Speaker 5: I'm like, THEO, I can't possibly sit on the plane
- 52:57Speaker 5: and watch seven guys get off a plane and walk
- 53:00Speaker 5: onto a plane and fly down.
- 53:01Speaker 3: There with that. I'm paying for it.
- 53:03Speaker 2: And he goes, Tom was.
- 53:06Speaker 1: The flight he was?
- 53:09Speaker 5: And I go theel dude, like, what do you got?
- 53:12Speaker 5: He goes, well, are you good to play? Your body?
- 53:16Speaker 1: Fine? I said, yeah, he goes go play.
- 53:20Speaker 3: I love him.
- 53:21Speaker 2: I was like all right.
- 53:22Speaker 5: He goes, when are you guys getting back? I go,
- 53:23Speaker 5: we'll be back as soon as we're done. We're flying back,
- 53:25Speaker 5: we'll be in. We got back for dinner.
- 53:27Speaker 2: We went on. Yeah, John paid, We're all together, We're
- 53:31Speaker 2: all this is this is now August like we're together forever.
- 53:37Speaker 2: And we go to Pebble Beach. We play. We hang
- 53:40Speaker 2: out all night there like till the wee hours of
- 53:42Speaker 2: the morning. There we play golf, fly in on the
- 53:47Speaker 2: on the patio, fly in that night, and we still
- 53:50Speaker 2: go to dinner. That's how much we wanted to be together.
- 53:54Speaker 2: And we were there. John as great as he was,
- 53:59Speaker 2: he's sometimes cut some corners, and he not only did
- 54:03Speaker 2: he buy us all eight rooms, but I was the
- 54:05Speaker 2: guy who kept him in check. He got us partial
- 54:08Speaker 2: view rooms. And it was like, John, if we're gonna
- 54:11Speaker 2: do this, you got the plane, You're gonna give me
- 54:13Speaker 2: a partial view, like a partial view suite. It was
- 54:16Speaker 2: a sweet but before partial view. So I'm just wearing
- 54:19Speaker 2: them out right, partial view, partial view. And we get there.
- 54:24Speaker 2: The partial view is like there's a little parking lot
- 54:26Speaker 2: and then it's all ocean and cliffs.
- 54:28Speaker 5: It was a view of a parking lot with a
- 54:30Speaker 5: little bit of ocean over the top of it.
- 54:31Speaker 2: No, it was more ocean than but I panned and
- 54:34Speaker 2: like made it look like John this partial fuse bullshit,
- 54:37Speaker 2: like look at these rooms and he wore me out
- 54:40Speaker 2: and I wore them out about having to walk. But
- 54:42Speaker 2: that trip, I still have that picture of all of
- 54:45Speaker 2: us in the sand in.
- 54:47Speaker 3: The house. Everybody's posing, skis posing. It was me us three,
- 54:53Speaker 3: Maggie kb hen Ski Area, Lackie right, and I three. Unbelievable.
- 55:00Speaker 4: And we left there, went go to dinner, go to dinner, win,
- 55:04Speaker 4: beat the ship out of Oakland.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Friday night day game sevendy.
- 55:07Speaker 2: While we're in the middle right now of what turned
- 55:10Speaker 2: out to be thirteen out of fourteen, and this was
- 55:12Speaker 2: we were on eleven row, and this is all the
- 55:14Speaker 2: stuff that's going on off the field.
- 55:16Speaker 3: Saturday, we have a day game, we beat Oakland.
- 55:20Speaker 4: John's got a boat race, and we got a sprinter
- 55:23Speaker 4: van that sends us down to San Francisco.
- 55:26Speaker 3: Forty nine ers, big up, the VJ police.
- 55:29Speaker 2: Escort, escort, Kenny Chesney concert.
- 55:32Speaker 4: Chesney concert, met the head coach, walks around the facilities,
- 55:36Speaker 4: party with Chesney.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Sammy Hagar's. There were hanging out back stage.
- 55:40Speaker 4: Go back sweep Oakland on Sunday and head home Like
- 55:45Speaker 4: that was like literally the best road trip.
- 55:48Speaker 1: That was a good one.
- 55:48Speaker 2: It was a street that was the best one.
- 55:50Speaker 3: Bro.
- 55:52Speaker 2: I think what people don't understand is how much we
- 55:54Speaker 2: enjoyed life that year off the field. Like it was
- 55:58Speaker 2: like we would got to the field and we were
- 56:00Speaker 2: excited to play together and we were equally excited for
- 56:03Speaker 2: what was about to happen. Yeah.
- 56:05Speaker 4: Well, I don't think Joe gets enough credit for the
- 56:08Speaker 4: mindset of which he created of be yours have fun
- 56:12Speaker 4: off the field, and you're going to be better at
- 56:13Speaker 4: your job when you come to work. Like that was
- 56:16Speaker 4: such a different kind of mindset than a lot of managers.
- 56:19Speaker 4: Like living and breathing Baseball twenty four to seven, it's
- 56:21Speaker 4: nice like coming to work every single day knowing it's like, yeah,
- 56:25Speaker 4: we've done a lot of fun stuff and off the
- 56:27Speaker 4: field that when we come we still want to hang
- 56:29Speaker 4: out and now we were a tighter knit group when
- 56:31Speaker 4: you come together and want to get to work and
- 56:34Speaker 4: play hard.
- 56:34Speaker 5: Focus for and to your point to that, I think
- 56:36Speaker 5: Joe did a really good job with the schedule and
- 56:38Speaker 5: the times of which we got to the field. Sure right,
- 56:41Speaker 5: Like it's on a random Tuesday and we've got a
- 56:44Speaker 5: seventy eight seven pm game, and he's like, all right,
- 56:48Speaker 5: Little League Week show.
- 56:49Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, American Legion Week.
- 56:51Speaker 2: Shout out to Davey Martinez too. Yeah, Joe handled the
- 56:54Speaker 2: media so well in US, But Davey ran that asylum
- 56:57Speaker 2: of communicating.
- 56:58Speaker 1: You love the asylum.
- 57:00Speaker 2: Prisoners run the asylum. I've said it my whole career.
- 57:03Speaker 2: If they don't, it's not a good team. If the
- 57:05Speaker 2: team's not controlled from within, it's not a great team.
- 57:09Speaker 2: But Joe, but I remember coming in one day. I
- 57:12Speaker 2: think I was at your house or something, and we
- 57:13Speaker 2: were just pounding wine. I think, what was the screaming.
- 57:20Speaker 1: With this?
- 57:20Speaker 2: You opened up a screaming eagle for us or something,
- 57:23Speaker 2: a crazy bottle of wine, and I thought, I thought
- 57:28Speaker 2: it could have been the potatoes or the steak that
- 57:30Speaker 2: we had that night that made me a little fuzzy
- 57:31Speaker 2: the next morning.
- 57:32Speaker 1: But it's always the steak.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it could have been the wine. I go into
- 57:35Speaker 2: Joe's office and I'm able to have a conversation with
- 57:39Speaker 2: him like a friend, and I'm like, Joe, last night
- 57:42Speaker 2: we were at Lester's I believe it was there, and
- 57:45Speaker 2: we drank so much wine as oh brother, He's like,
- 57:47Speaker 2: how do you feeling it. I'm like, I'm good, Like,
- 57:50Speaker 2: just get through it, You'll be fine. I go out
- 57:51Speaker 2: and have a great game. But how can you say
- 57:54Speaker 2: that to your manager, because that's the environment he created. Sure,
- 57:57Speaker 2: you know what I mean. It was like, there's nothing
- 57:59Speaker 2: better than that.
- 58:00Speaker 4: I want to get to one of my favorite games.
- 58:02Speaker 4: Because I've never asked you the story that the last
- 58:05Speaker 4: game of the season, Sunday Night Baseball Saint Louis, we're
- 58:09Speaker 4: going on the postseason and Joe takes me out of
- 58:13Speaker 4: the game.
- 58:14Speaker 3: Joe comes out. You're carving.
- 58:16Speaker 4: We're up and three to one, like the seventh, right,
- 58:21Speaker 4: it was late and you still had your pitches were
- 58:23Speaker 4: down Joe. I think we got one out and Joe,
- 58:26Speaker 4: here comes Joe out of the dugout. I look over,
- 58:28Speaker 4: I'm like, we got two, we got two out, we
- 58:30Speaker 4: got two out.
- 58:31Speaker 3: I'm like, what the fuck's he doing out here?
- 58:33Speaker 4: Like Johnny's rolling like so I'm like on one of
- 58:37Speaker 4: my pissed, like I played mad right, like I was
- 58:39Speaker 4: definitely all we know, we know, I know, I know,
- 58:42Speaker 4: I get this reputation.
- 58:43Speaker 3: Of like, oh, Rossie's so nice, grandpa blah blahah. These
- 58:46Speaker 3: guys hated me, so everybody knows I love you. It's it.
- 58:52Speaker 4: He's coming out and I'm on one of my my
- 58:54Speaker 4: rants to the mound and you're just you're staring at me,
- 58:57Speaker 4: and I'm thinking, what's he doing?
- 58:59Speaker 3: What's Joe doing? And You're like, uh, he's taking you
- 59:02Speaker 3: out of the game. Or Joe grabs me.
- 59:03Speaker 4: He's like, hey, I've never done this before. You went
- 59:06Speaker 4: in his office and told him to take me out
- 59:08Speaker 4: of the game. I want to know how that whole
- 59:09Speaker 4: thing went down.
- 59:11Speaker 1: So night.
- 59:11Speaker 4: I appreciate I appreciate that, but I've never heard how.
- 59:17Speaker 4: I can imagine a player coming into my office and going, hey,
- 59:20Speaker 4: we're gonna take this wen, take this guy out of
- 59:22Speaker 4: the game.
- 59:22Speaker 1: So night before.
- 59:25Speaker 5: I send it home, you know, we're fair and I
- 59:28Speaker 5: are just talking or whatever, and I look at her
- 59:31Speaker 5: and I go, hey, what do you think about this?
- 59:34Speaker 5: I said, if everything goes well tomorrow, having Joe taken
- 59:39Speaker 5: Rossi out of the game before he takes me out,
- 59:41Speaker 5: I was like, but it's got to go perfect.
- 59:44Speaker 1: It can't be.
- 59:44Speaker 5: It can't be the fourth inning when I've got eighty
- 59:46Speaker 5: seven pitches and we're losing six to three or whatever.
- 59:49Speaker 5: I said, it's got to go perfect. And she's like, yeah,
- 59:51Speaker 5: go talk to Joe. See what he says.
- 59:53Speaker 2: Said Okay.
- 59:54Speaker 5: So I get there early the next day, planning on
- 59:57Speaker 5: having to talk to Joe for like thirty forty minutes
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: right like give him the whole spiel. He's gonna talk
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: me down off this ledge and analytics say you can't
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: do this or whatever, and I go into jug Hey, Joe,
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: I got an idea, he said, yeah.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: I said, now, same thing.
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: If everything goes perfect tonight, what do you think about
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: taking ROSSI out for his last game before you take
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: me up?
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Let him get let him walk off the field, get
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: his love, because I love it.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: That's all he said.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: And I said, any idea you ever brought to Joe? Yeah,
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: he was like.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: And I sat there.
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: I was like, I just can't imagine how that's it,
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: and he goes, yeah, love.
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: I remember starting to pulling the mask down, starting to
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: cry right in front of you, guys.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: You had a home of that game.
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: Joe's like this, it's like in your face and you
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: got your mask off and you're like looking at me
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: and looking at him, and he goes you taking it
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: out of the game, and you didn't know what to do,
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: and I'm like waiting for like a hug or like
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: a bro dap or something, and you just go, I
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: love you, guys.
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: I was about to melt down, like I like, I
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: saw all the look in you guy's face and you
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: were just like staring through me, and I'm like.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: About I almost forgot to hug Joe and everything.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: It's another example of the things that John did for
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: us that no one knew about. Exactly, no one knew
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: that John did that, Like no one knew that you
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: went to Joe's office and pulled him out, and nor
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: did you want the credit for that afterwards too. But
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: these are all the things behind the scene that make
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: a championship team that it doesn't you can't quantify it.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: It just happens. And for Joe to do that, for
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: you to be able to have the confidence to go
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: tell Joe this right, it's just all of these things
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: come together to make it where the reason you want
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: to do that for him is because you guys were
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: brothers on the field and you care about him, and
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: you got your runway of your hundredth home run, the
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: Grandpa Rossi, the whole retirement tour, it's no, it's not
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: about you. But let's get back to no one gives
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: the stanting ovation to a backup catcher. Great point, you
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: know what I mean? Point that doesn't even get to
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: get all of that bats right exactly because of John.
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: So we go into the playoffs and playoffs and you
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: put us on your back, bro, Like I mean, we
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: had obviously our whole pitch staff was really good and
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: the areata was on a two year run that like
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: I've never seen. And you you're different in the playoffs, right,
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: Like what is that?
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: Like?
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: I think people need to learn from your mentality and
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: you're talking about routine, You're talking about your experiences.
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: I always have a lot of lot to do with that.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: But Bro, you're dominant in the postseason.
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: Looking back on it, I think a little bit of
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: a little bit of it is like I said, I'm
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: not I never look to see who I was pitching against.
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: I didn't care, right like Adam Wainwright, Annabelle Sanchez, Joe
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: Shitt the barber, It doesn't matter, right, Like I'm not competing.
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: I'm competing against him, but I'm not pitching against him,
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: So that in my mind never scared me. You know
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: what I'm saying, and then I just I loved when
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: it mattered, right, Like, the season gets so long. Beginning
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: of the season, you're so hyped, you're ready to go,
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: you're amped, you feel good.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: You should be somewhat locked in with your stuff.
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: You get to the middle of the season, it's kind
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: of dictating which way the year is going for you.
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: Whatever you get to August, you hate everybody.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: Sure, angry August say angry August.
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: You hate everybody. You hate your family, you hate your
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: your teammates, you hate to say whatever you want, and
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: it's you hate everybody. September comes around, you get that
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: little boost where you call up the young fellas. They're there,
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: they're getting to especially in our situation to sixteen. Those
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: young guys got to experience some first for them, which
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: is cool. You're in a playoff hunt. You're in a
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: playoff hunt. We clinch early. When you clinch early, it's
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: good and bad because then you're like, all right, I'm preparing.
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: I'm still trying to win the games, but I'm also
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: not trying to get hurt, you know, So you're kind
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: of dodging and weaving your way through September. Now, those
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: lights come on, and the weather changes. It's getting dark early.
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: You have flyovers all of a sudden. You know, you
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: got the big flag for the anthem. People are there.
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: The stadiums filled before the Yeah, the stadiums feel before
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: the first pitch. Everybody's asses in their seat before the
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: first pitch because they want to see playoff baseball.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: The crowd is into it.
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: First inning, two outs, three to two, right, like now
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: you your senses are amps romantic.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: It is right, you're really they're getting me gone on.
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: That's why I love baseball though, especially like I got
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: spoiled early in my career to go to playoffs so
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: much and be a part of it and have responsibility.
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: You know, I wasn't a fourth I wasn't you know.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: The you're you're the guy.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it was here. Here's game one, Go get
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: them kid.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: Let's talk about game one because it it was cold,
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: it was windy. Which Game one in NLDS twenty.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: Sixteen, Oh at Wrigley, at Wrigley.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: We're playing the Giants. The Giants are coming off their
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: even year. Was it three years in a row? Three
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: even years in a row. So we're now sixteen. This
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: is gonna be their fourth they won in fourteen, and
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: that's real, and it's real that we have one hundred
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: and eight year curse over us too, which we handled
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: really well. But that shit was real because we didn't win,
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: and you get asked about all the time, and you
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: just add a little bit of extra juice. So we
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: go into game one and John shoves where do you go?
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: You go eight innings, five strikeouts, We end up winning
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: the game one nothing on Hobbiesbby.
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: Hit a six mile homer that hit the basket.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: Hit the basket, barely got in.
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: I mean, he's the fuck out and I still don't
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: think he's touched first base.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Still he's still standing at home.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: We all knew it was a homer too, and it
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: barely got over and we win one nothing. But the
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: tone that you set for that game set the tone
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: for the rest of the playoff us because we do.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: We we boat race pretty much all season. We have
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: a little hiccup in July, we have a great second half,
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: we kind of start amping up for the playoffs, and
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: then Game one, boom, we get hit in the face
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: of quato and we win one nothing. But that game
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: set the tone that the energy there. We had a
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: backpick there game one that no one knows, like, this
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: is how fearless we were, and this is how amazing
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: Joe was that he trusted us. We do a back
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: pick in game one where a guy's bunting. I come
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: up in the guy's face. The guy at first takes
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: a big lead. Hobby comes around on the.
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: Back and you trust Hobby, You trust Hobby, you trust John,
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: you trust.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: You're trusting four guys there to do their job, and
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: we get a huge backpick there. That just another example
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: of us playing fearless, us being too young, we're too
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: dumb or what did you always.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: Say about saying young and young and dumb.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: That was John's favorite line, because we were all I
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: think twenty six or twenty five and under. We did
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: second youngest team. But that sets the tone. We win, then,
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: i'ds we go into game one of the NLC US
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: Dodgers and you set the tone again. There, you remember
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: what you did there.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: I remember Game five more than I remember Game one.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Let's see Game one of the NLCS six innings, one run,
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: we went eight four, Maggie Montero, grand Slam, Joelton, Joe.
- 1:07:29Speaker 8: Joe Blain chess match between Joe and Dave Roberts, Jiggy Miggie,
- 1:07:35Speaker 8: and we'll get to this when we talked to Miggie,
- 1:07:37Speaker 8: But Maggie was for the whole team.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: If you weren't playing, you had a mission, and that
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: was to get runs. And how do we get runs?
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: John a little some we like to call rally beers.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: Rally beers or shots or because in sixteen I believe
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: it started in fifteen when we swept a series, the
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: boys would take shots. And if we ever got to
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: a little rut and we were kind of grinding, those
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: shots became instead of after the game, sometimes they were
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: before the game on occasion, on.
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: Occasion, not very often, but it happened.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: It did happen when we needed it. You can't go
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: to the well too much or it doesn't work.
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: And the crazy thing about Mickie is, I think earlier
- 1:08:17Speaker 5: in that day he couldn't walk.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: He just got a courtizone shot.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Yeah, hey, it was that day, right, yeah, And he.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: Was still rallying for the boys. So he comes in
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: and it's that grand slam. I don't even think he
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: really knew his name at the time.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: Joe, Joe should have thrown the heater.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: Yeah, he hung but that was electric.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: I mean, dude, the whole playoff scene like whether and
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: and don't take this wrong way. But whatever side you're on,
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: whether you win or you lose, you will never forget
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: being in the playoffs, right, it never. And the further
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: you go, the more electric and the more your senses
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: are away, like you're you're you're hyped. You get to
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: the field, You're hyped as soon as you get there.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: The closer you get with your teammates, yeah, close to
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: the families get because all the families are rallying together too.
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: And the fans. You're getting out of your car, the
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: fans are there. What's that in the playoffs? Like you're
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: getting out of your car.
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: Like the That's what I'm saying, Like, I'll never forget.
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: I'll never forget Game five. I'm jumping ahead of the
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: of the CS. But Game five of the World Series.
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: You know, not very often at Wrigley do you walk
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: out of the of the dugout to go warm up,
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: which was if I think when we played seven o'clock
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: games during the play Yeah, because Chicago's seven behind some seven,
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: so I'd be out there at six twenty walking out
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: of the dugout right, you couldn't see a seat in
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: that place, Wrigley Special and they were I mean, bro,
- 1:09:39Speaker 5: that and I see everybody was standing, but you couldn't
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: see seats.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: What I'm saying, I guess for warm ups.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: We hadn't been to the World Series and sixty No,
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: I get that. I know it's a series and what
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: I'm saying, and then I'll see, yes, you haven't at
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: that point, have gone. So when we win, you win
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: Game five, right, and then game six we win, we'd
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: beat Kershaw double play and the game to.
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: Go back to Game five, I think probably one of
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: the best postseason games I've ever thrown.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: Bro, you dominate it.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: That's that was like I knew going into that game.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: I was lost.
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: I want to talk about let's let's walk the I
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: think like you got a four to one record in
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: World Series games and the one loss in Cleveland Game one,
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: we went, I went us together, so heavy scouting report
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: and what did we say after that game? Like you
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: were having to throw it in a dixie cup by
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: the second time through the lineup because we're sinking away.
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: We're change up back door, trying to cut it in off.
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: They were giving up on the end, and your bread
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: and butter was I'm going to establish I rememb We
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: got an argument in Boston about it. I'm going to
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: establish my four seamer in that's when I'm at my best.
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: That locks me in mechanically, and that gets everything everybody
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: looking in for my and then I can go cutter
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: off that I can sink away. Everything works after that,
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: and I learned that over time, and then got to
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: the World Series in game one and we went so
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: heavy scour report. Remember everybody, everybody was like, sink down
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: the way, no strike breaking balls, change up, different things
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: like that.
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: And we had you had to grow. He grinded through
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: that game. You grinded.
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: But you say, we just said something. It reminded me.
- 1:11:16Speaker 5: And I don't know if you remember this. The reason
- 1:11:19Speaker 5: I said that to you is because the very first
- 1:11:21Speaker 5: time you caught me in twenty thirteen, Yeah, I know,
- 1:11:23Speaker 5: you came back. He was on a Hawaiian vacation all
- 1:11:27Speaker 5: year with his I had a good cushion, had scrambled brow.
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: He had both of us there for years.
- 1:11:35Speaker 5: He didn't know what planet he was on, and went
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: to Hawaii, came back all tan, you know, and the
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: gonna lie. The tan line was a little weird when
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: we got in the shower, That's all I'm saying.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: It was a little awkward. I didn't know what kind
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: of bathing suit he had.
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: So thirteen started out really good for me, and then
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: I hit a lull, kind of like we're talking about
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: in sixteen for us. In July whatever struggled beginnings of Timber.
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: We're facing Detroit. Do you remember this? Facing Detroit. I
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: know I'm getting off topic. We'll get right back there.
- 1:12:08Speaker 5: Never caught me except for spring training comes in.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: This is.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: When this is when Detroit is rolling.
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: They got Sanchez, they got Prince Torry hunterlin Uh, Victor Martinez, miggi.
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: Omarvion Vonte, a really good player.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: Like murders Row.
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: Okay, no disrespect to the Yankees. But so we get
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: in there and I'm dude, I'm like, I don't know
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: what I'm gonna do. Like these guys plus Victor Martinez,
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: Tory Hunter, and Miguel Cabres ops against me is a
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: combined seven million love when you pitched seven million. Okay,
- 1:12:50Speaker 5: So we sit down and I've got all my fucking
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: notes and I look at Rossi and he goes, hey,
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: this is what we're gonna do. He goes every every
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: bit of film I watched, everybody kind of dicking off
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: with these guys. They're going back door breaking ball, this, this, this, this,
- 1:13:06Speaker 5: they fall behind two to one, two oh three to one.
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: Then guess what happens, Pakaye Right like, now that's where
- 1:13:14Speaker 5: the damage comes. He goes, We're gonna come out and
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: we're gonna throw the ball as hard as we can,
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: and we're gonna throw it right at their hands till
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: they make an adjustment.
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: Cool.
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: The only left in the lineup was Prince Fielder. All right,
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: here we go, Rossie, step back there.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: Peterran until over and over again, and.
- 1:13:36Speaker 5: Just the first three innings, and like I was pissed,
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: like I was still trying to figure it out. I
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: was blowing like ninety six, ninety five, ninety six, just
- 1:13:45Speaker 5: Miguel's jumping out of the way. Next thing you know,
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: got curveball under Chase. We end up winning the game.
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: And at the cutter.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: What that did in thirteen was then all right to go.
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: Back about statish, establishing your fastball, stamaging your cutter, which
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: made everything else.
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: And it locked you in mechanically and you learned later
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: on too.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: It's like, just so we roll up game six at
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: Wrigley for the NLCS, right, you just win game five,
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: you go seven innings, I think one run. We have
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: a chance to go to the World Series and we
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: fell short the year before. We have first ballot Hall
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: of Famer Clinton Kershaw on the mound and we roll
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: him right and.
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: Wow, Hendricks deal.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: Yeah, the professor went deal. Our whole staff, he dealt
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: two games. He got the loss in the in game two. Yeah,
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: well we were down to one of that series. Right,
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: so we win off Kershaw the double play, and I
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: just remember Wriggly being so loud and that's celebration and
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: you winning the MVP, call m MVP of that series,
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: and it's like, what does that mean to you? You
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: sign there, you have this massive deal. You put so
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: much pressure on yourself. In fifteen, we exceed all expectations.
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: We're going to the World Series. Job's not finished. One
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: hundred and eight year curse. You're the guy you just
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: went MVP. Like, what are you feeling?
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: I feel like I'm feeling at the time, like I'm
- 1:15:12Speaker 5: doing my job, you know what I'm saying, like, not
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: to downplay it, but I feel like I'm.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: Doing what I was supposed to be doing.
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: You know, I think in fifteen, I know we're jumping
- 1:15:25Speaker 5: around a lot, but in fifteen I felt like I
- 1:15:28Speaker 5: needed to win the World Series in April.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: Yeah I remember that.
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: Yeah, make sense, like you're trying to live up to
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: that contract.
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I'm trying to make I'm trying to make.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: You're still new. You're also grumpy and unapproachable and all these.
- 1:15:39Speaker 5: Things allegedly, but yeah, I mean all those things. Thanks Ris,
- 1:15:47Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean I feel like at the time,
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: you're like, all right, I'm on a personal level, You're like,
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: all right, I'm doing.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: What I'm supposed to be doing, right, Like the.
- 1:15:58Speaker 5: Pieces are falling now at the end of the day,
- 1:16:02Speaker 5: I'm just throwing this out there.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: I'm three for three on World Series.
- 1:16:05Speaker 5: Okay, I've never gone to the World I just wanted
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: Black's famous line.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: Black famous line.
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: Remember he said when we got to the World Series,
- 1:16:13Speaker 5: he said, hey, Tony, I ain't never been to a
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: World Series.
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: I hadn't won, so I have how's that second place ring?
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: Anyway?
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: So one of that.
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: So anyway, I just feel like at the time, I'm like,
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: all right, we've accomplished half of the goal. We've got
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: to the World series, right, that's sometimes that's half the
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: battle total is getting there. All jokes aside, but we've
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: got there. Okay, we've accomplished goal one of getting there. Now,
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: goal too is to win the motherfucker right, Like, like,
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: we didn't come here for to lose, right, we came
- 1:16:55Speaker 5: here to win.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: Probably in my obviously I'm bias to this, but I
- 1:17:01Speaker 5: think one of the greatest World series in the history
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: of the game.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: Oh, hands down, hands down. There's not even the ups
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: and downs, the droughts, both teams, both.
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: Teams, the cat and mouse game, two great managers going
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: at each other, as far as game planning, pitching, matchups,
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: you know, all this stuff starting pitching, offense, stolen bases, everything.
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: Like then it ends up at game seven, which is
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: my first Game seven, it was incredible. Oh, roller coaster
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: of emotions.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: That's not skip out. You win the MVP of the
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: NLCS that night. That party at John's house was elite. Okay, basically,
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: the whole team's there, the whole city's rioting. Everyone's just
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: happy to be back in the World Series. We still
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: know we have a job to do, but we celebrate,
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: celebrated everything.
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: Then it felt I don't know how you guys felt
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: when we won the CS, because we had lost it
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: the year before. I felt like boom, like that was
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: that was a sense of relief for me. It was like, Okay,
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: now we're going to the World Series. Just roll it
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: all out there.
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: But getting further than we did in fifteen to me
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: was so important because of the steps we had taken so.
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: Fast growing and especially for the young guys, it's like
- 1:18:24Speaker 5: confidence right, Like you feel like and I know there's
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: guys that have done this where it's like I.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: Can't get past the DS. You know what I'm saying.
- 1:18:32Speaker 5: There's a roadblock there, and maybe that's why that roadblock.
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: It's like, oh, oh well here it is still the
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: same game.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: We're good. It's a funny story. After a game six
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: we win, celebrate all that stuff. Drive back to that.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I lived a mile from Rapley.
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: Wife calls me and says, hey, there's a group of
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: people in the front yard tepeeing our tree.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: I remember this.
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: Pulled around.
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: We've got a alley way that you pulled into the garage.
- 1:19:01Speaker 5: Berteaux that we lived on was a one way street
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: going that way. Pull around, go down the one way
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: street this.
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: Way, pull up.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, what are y'all doing?
- 1:19:10Speaker 5: Oh, we just wanted to celebrate, and I go by
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: t peeing my tree.
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: Didn't you invite him in for a beer? Yeah?
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: I go.
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: If you guys want to celebrate, I go.
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: You guys want to celebrate and knock on my damn door,
- 1:19:20Speaker 5: I'll come have a beer with you.
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: And the one lady goes, we are so sorry, we'll
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: start cleaning up. They cleaned up all the.
- 1:19:30Speaker 5: Well. I parked and came out and we cheers and
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: had a drink and then when went.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: Well, that party was. First off, I have to tell
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: you set the scene on John's house. John bought. Not
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: only did John buy a house, he bought the lot
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: next door. It was a house as well. He knocked
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: it down till his dog famously quoted and I quote,
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: I knocked it down so my dog had a yard
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: to shit it. Okay, that's the type of I may
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: have just told you that, but okay, well.
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: I'm not anymore.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: This is what the this is what the people get John.
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: But John has this party and we're all there and
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: we're all celebrating, and next thing you know, we're on
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: the back patio. Rossi's playing the guitar. My dad's there
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: playing the guitar. Eddie Vetty Eddie Vedder is there, starts
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: jamming out for us in the backyard, like I think
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: he's saying, what the Cubs go all the way right?
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: Someday we'll go all the way? Yes, And he's just
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: doing an acoustic Rossi's playing, my Dad's playing. This one
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: of my greatest memories because my dad loves playing the
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: guitar too, and all of us coming together there and
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: just knowing that the job's not finished, but we're we
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: we got this like we were sew together.
- 1:20:43Speaker 4: And then we roll into game one, well because I
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: because me and your dad were playing our thing. Now
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: is we open for Eddie Vedder? Just so everybody did
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: you did? I opened?
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: You're an opener, I'm an o and we go we
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: go into game one of the World Series. You're setting
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: the tone for us.
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: Didn't do a very good job.
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: We don't. We said the tone.
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: That was my fault. I take the responsible Me and
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: me and Borsello Mike Borsello. Yeah, and we went so
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: scouting report.
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: But then in game five you came out and we
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: you fucking punched out the side going I'm being.
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: Me, I'm being Game five was the hardest game of
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: the series, hands down. Game seven was its own fairy tale,
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: but game five. But let's go back to game three.
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: At the first game at Wrigley in what sixty plus years,
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: the atmosphere there was so like dead coming off the
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: NLCS at everyone party in Suburn, and it was like,
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: we get there. In game three, we're tied one to one,
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: and the atmosphere was almost like everyone was just so nervous,
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: Like I don't know if it was just me and
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: I was projecting on the fans, but like the energy
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: in the stadium was flat. We didn't really give them
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: a lot to cheer for, granted, but we go down.
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: We lose Game three, we lose Game four, and we're like, fuck,
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: like we just got swept the year before. Ain't doing this.
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: And you come out in game five and we get
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: I think we gave you an early early lead.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: How could you at home?
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: Well, you got us through the first An early lead
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: is the first three innings. John oh, man, I thought
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: hit a homer.
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: No, it wasn't until the fourth or fifth inning.
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: Third base hit a hit a homer.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: Second inning.
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: Remember, we went in so much and finally I was like, okay,
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: we've established in when Ramirez hit hit a solo home run,
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: went heat her in second one heater in homer.
- 1:22:36Speaker 3: I was like, okay, now we've established that.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: Game was now we go. That game was a gauntlet.
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: We won three two, You go six innings, one run,
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: Chappie comes in, I think goes two plus.
- 1:22:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll tell you this, h I don't want to
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: say it's the only game but I think it's one
- 1:22:53Speaker 5: of the only games that I have looked at the
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: pitching coach and taken.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: Myself out of the game. Your guest was really stick
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: with Yeah. It was realistic with myself.
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: Thank god. Yeah, because six innings, one run, we're right
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: at your ball.
- 1:23:07Speaker 5: I just giving up the second run. I grind it
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: in the sixth and somebody hit a base hit up
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: the middle. They scored, and I want to say it
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: was no, Yeah, Lindor got the base hit up the middle,
- 1:23:20Speaker 5: and then you threw him out a second to get
- 1:23:22Speaker 5: out of the inning, and we got down there and
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: Boss came to check on me. I was at like
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: ninety something pitches and I go Boss. I said, I'm
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: I can give you as much as you want next inning,
- 1:23:35Speaker 5: but also don't put me in there. And if I
- 1:23:38Speaker 5: give a base hit, take me out and and have
- 1:23:41Speaker 5: that reliever come with somebody on.
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: I said, if if, if.
- 1:23:44Speaker 5: You guys are questioning it, give that guy clean inning.
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: And he's like, all right, fair enough, and so he went.
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: And they so much emotions leading up to that game.
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: That was, well, we knew, we knew. We win game five,
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: we're going to roll in game six. That was our
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: mentality because we saw Tomlin. He kind of diced us
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: up a little bit and game remember the win was
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: going out and it was him and Hendricks, and.
- 1:24:08Speaker 4: I was like, oh, take the over in this game. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: game games. Yeah, it was like two to one one
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: game six.
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: In game six, after we won Game five was a
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: huge exit, like, oh funk, we're gonna roll game six.
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: Game seven is a crap shoot, right, And we did.
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: We came out, We came out in game six and
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: we popped off and we're all celebrating early and I
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: remember ROSSI being so pissed off that like we're all
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: like happy games, pacing up and down the doug Ount
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: even though I don't even think you were playing. I was, yeah, exactly,
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: and we go up all the way to go was
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: the seventh or eighth and eighth in and I think,
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: and again, this podcast is not about me. It's about
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: the reunion. But I had a home run World Series
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: home run and we go up like five, five or
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: six runs and Joe left champion. And that was like
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: the first real time, first time where like you know,
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: during the year, you get a lot of bicker and
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: everyone questions the manager at some point, but that was
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: the first time where like the whole dugout came together
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: and was like, Joe, get this fucking guy out of
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: the game, Like we this game's over, Chappie's still in,
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: Like let's get him out. Get Travis Wood up.
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: Like your homer made it over when you hit the
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: homer boom, got it.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: Mike dropped and I dropped a bat too. Again, it's
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: really not about me, but I did drop. It's it's
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: a good picture I have in the office. But that's
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: like the first time where we were like, get him
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: out of the game. Right, because Chappie was our dog,
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: he was our he came over at the deadline and
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: just what he did for us, the respect I have
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: for him. Yeah, and then we go into game seven.
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: We're all ready to go, right.
- 1:25:51Speaker 5: Like baskets of emotions, game bro.
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: That game was. But what was your what was your
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: mindset like mine because you just pitched, so you're kind
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: of on short rest.
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: Me you lackey in area to go down.
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: Well before that hold on game six we win, Joe
- 1:26:10Speaker 5: calls me in the office, Hey, how are you fine?
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: Wow?
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: What do you need?
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: We're this is what we're doing tomorrow.
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: Kyle's gonna go five and you're gonna either four or
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: five and you're going to bridge to Chappie and then
- 1:26:25Speaker 5: hopefully we got the trophy. Right, That was Joke's what
- 1:26:29Speaker 5: Joe said. I said, Cool, Skip, I'll be ready and
- 1:26:31Speaker 5: I'll be ready whenever you need me.
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: Cool.
- 1:26:34Speaker 5: So now I'm going to bed knowing I'm pitching, which
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: I think, looking back on it was a blessing because
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: now your nerves go down.
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: There's no question, there's no wedding.
- 1:26:45Speaker 5: Yeah, Like I'm not walking down there and going when
- 1:26:48Speaker 5: the phone rings, you know, So like that helped, so
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: go ahead.
- 1:26:52Speaker 4: Sorry, no, but well going down there and I went
- 1:26:55Speaker 4: down there with you guys, and I remember.
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: You were like the actual He was like, they really
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: the decision making.
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: Because yeah, bought.
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: You got down there and just started like throwing a
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: little bit. You want to take a while to warm up.
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: And I remember catching you and getting ready, and then
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: I was going down early and you were still going
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: to be warmed up, and Noble was catching you and
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: I'm watching you pitch. I'm like, he's throwing bebies. Like
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: if this goes too long, he's gonna be gassed. It's
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: with in my mind right like.
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: He is down a boom boom. No.
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: I went in at the end of the inning and
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: Joe and Boz came up to me. It was like,
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: how's he look I'm like, he looks great. But I
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: wouldn't just extend this was my advice. I was like,
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: I wouldn't have him sit down there and throw bullets,
- 1:27:44Speaker 4: like the bullets are coming out good.
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: Whenever you're ready to bring him in, he's ready, like,
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: don't wait two innings.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: Well, you're supposed to come in on a clean inning,
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: supposed to come on a clean come in with what
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: running around.
- 1:27:55Speaker 5: We're all went first, first, We're all went to ry
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: was the third inning where Kyle kind of gave up
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: a little bit of hard contact and they scored the run.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: So it was one one.
- 1:28:05Speaker 5: And the next they called down then and they're like,
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: go get ready, mind you before all of this started,
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: before the game, I told Travis wood I said, Woodie,
- 1:28:18Speaker 5: I don't know what the fuck I'm doing down there. Okay,
- 1:28:22Speaker 5: I said one, I said, one's the World Series.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: Two, I'm in the bullpen. I have.
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: I have my routine that I'm going to try to
- 1:28:30Speaker 5: stick to, but you can't because it's it's a it's
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: a damn.
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: And now could go the season.
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: And then once the phone rings are grenade goes off
- 1:28:42Speaker 5: and everybody goes everywhere, and you're like, what do I do?
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: And so I told Woody before the game, I said,
- 1:28:48Speaker 5: if you you watch how many pitches I'm throwing. If
- 1:28:52Speaker 5: I get to a point where I've thrown too many pitches,
- 1:28:54Speaker 5: I want you to stand directly in front of me
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: where I can't throw another pitch.
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: So you imagine that I do. On the broadcast what
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: he's saying, wish like John.
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: I wish I wish they would have got it. But
- 1:29:06Speaker 5: there was a point where when you left and I
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: was down there and it was just aimless throwing.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: Then I was just throwing to throw.
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: You were loose.
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: When I left Wood, he came over and literally stood
- 1:29:17Speaker 5: not like not like face three face, but like he
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: kind of stood off to my side where I knew, okay,
- 1:29:22Speaker 5: I'm done, damn. And he stood there and then like
- 1:29:25Speaker 5: I went to throw, he would be like, nope, uh huh.
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: He's like when that phone rings and they say that
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: you're coming in, you fire three or four as hard
- 1:29:34Speaker 5: as you can.
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: And then you go in. And that's what we did.
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: And then you came in and I fucked it all
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: and you you died.
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: Bro, he died twice. He died was killed me, bro kipness,
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: what was it a swinging bar or did he swinging.
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: Button swinging to strike cutter away and pulls off.
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: But it went like this, I bust out, I blew
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: a handy and then and the and the process spin
- 1:30:00Speaker 4: row air mail.
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: He kiveness runs into him. I'm like, I just got give.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: This a bowling ball.
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: Bro.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: He's short in compact, yeah, like and I always said
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: too as a first baseman because when balls go up
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: the line, like when it really matters, I'll.
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: Stay in there.
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: I'll stay in there.
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: Yeah, you hung in.
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: And I felt so proud afterwards because I actually did.
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: But that bro, he ran me over.
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm feeling great.
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: I just got in this thing. Then no strike breaking ball?
- 1:30:27Speaker 4: Who got a theme here? No strike breaking ball? Still
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: indoor and you shake to the breaking ball and I'm like.
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: All right, he's gonna bounce forty seven feet and literally
- 1:30:35Speaker 5: kill you.
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: You died all.
- 1:30:37Speaker 4: Of the mass, roll, roll my ankle, go to get up.
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: Doc Adams saying, I'm concuss I'm stumbling everywhere.
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: Two runs scored.
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: Two runs score on a pass ball probably never happened
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: in world serious history before.
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: And I'm thinking, I just got in stand I'm the
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: defensive guy, and I just fucked.
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: This all up. Like what happened?
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: Then you let off the next inning? Right? Was that
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: your last?
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: About second second? I think I hit second the next inning?
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, Andrew Miller, Andrew Miller and Miller and.
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: I was why did you show emotions? I'm like, thank
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: god I got one back. It's let into so bro.
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: You fucking threw what three and the third what was it?
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: And the third to bridge the gap? To bridge the gap?
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: Happy, ye, And I wish he wouldn't have taken me
- 1:31:19Speaker 5: out because because Jose Ramiers does have good numbers. Off me,
- 1:31:22Speaker 5: I think he's only got the one homer, but he's
- 1:31:24Speaker 5: got some hits. But we had two outs in that
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: inning and we're up six to two or three at
- 1:31:29Speaker 5: the time, yeah, six or three.
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: Well yeah, so I would coming in after.
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: The crazy inning we came in.
- 1:31:38Speaker 4: I had to hit him taking off my stuff, and
- 1:31:41Speaker 4: you looked at me, it's like look.
- 1:31:44Speaker 3: I was like, bro, you're fine, your ship's great. I
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: fucked that up like he's like, looked. I was like, bro,
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: you're throwing great, just like.
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: Other than the forty seven foot curve ball that killed him.
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: But he had nasty So you were loved.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: You were loved. It was good, I mean.
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: And then and then we went We went right, Chappie
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: comes in, Raja Davis, HiT's the homer. We go down,
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: let's go before we heard that story. Have I told
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: you that story when Rocher Davis at Homer? Oh god, no,
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: but I do know that what you no one knows.
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: Sorry to cut you short. You Grandpa that that feels aggressive.
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: I'm attacking you or the trust trate. You didn't call
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: a slider? Yeah, all well, playoffs twelve years or all this, Chapman.
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: Well, so, like going back, one of my things that
- 1:32:31Speaker 4: I held was I got taken out a lot when
- 1:32:34Speaker 4: Chapie came in and he would do Miggy or Wilson,
- 1:32:37Speaker 4: and so I didn't The scouting report for Raj was
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: the slider coming into him was bad and change.
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: Us for good.
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: Well, I had never caught Chappy splitty, and I didn't
- 1:32:50Speaker 4: trust to throw it myself right, especially with runners of
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: scoring position. So I was just like and in San
- 1:32:56Speaker 4: Francisco it worked great. I just threw heaters down and
- 1:32:59Speaker 4: it was punchy, punchy punt or whatever it was. And
- 1:33:02Speaker 4: so I'm just like, guy a second r I look
- 1:33:05Speaker 4: at his bat. He's choked up, this fall, this far
- 1:33:08Speaker 4: up on the bat, and I'm like, he's got to
- 1:33:11Speaker 4: pop one of these heaters up right, it's one hundred
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: and three like back then, not nobody threw on it right,
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: And I'm.
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: Like he's got two people.
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: Yeah, And I'm like, so I'm just keep throwing down
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: heaters and I'm like I remember getting in. I was
- 1:33:23Speaker 4: like to Mike Borsellar catching guys, I was like, fuck,
- 1:33:26Speaker 4: it should don't slider.
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: He's a slider. What the pitch? Don't splitty. I'm like,
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: I was bar.
- 1:33:31Speaker 4: But I'm like, well, I have never even caught I
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: didn't catch him that much. So it was like an
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: insecurity of mine of coming out in that moment of
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: not not knowing what to what to.
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: Do, and all the credit to Rajer.
- 1:33:43Speaker 5: Like yeah, I was to say, also, let's let's call
- 1:33:46Speaker 5: spade a spade here, Like Chappy threw the perfect pitch
- 1:33:50Speaker 5: with him choked up down to his bat path that
- 1:33:55Speaker 5: he hit perfectly for a home run.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: Sure you know what I'm saying, Like.
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: But you're right, I called I think it's twelve. We
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: should go back county twelve. Heaters around. But then when
- 1:34:07Speaker 4: Miggie came in, he threw almost all sliders. Remember that
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: Chappy stayed in another inning and threw it on the sliders.
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: The fact that Chappy got through, that's is the unsung
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: hero of the entire game.
- 1:34:18Speaker 5: Imagine, imagine your your emotional baggage. Bro, you just gave
- 1:34:22Speaker 5: up the game, tying homer and now you've got to
- 1:34:24Speaker 5: go out for another inning and try to get three out.
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: Bro.
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: Every every time as a kid watching that, ten out
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: of ten times the guy comes back out, he's gonna
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: give it up ten out of ten. So the fact
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: that he was able to do.
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: That, And that's what I don't like though, is everybody
- 1:34:38Speaker 5: wants to talk about about Chappie giving up that homer
- 1:34:41Speaker 5: to tie the game. Let's let no forget that. Let's
- 1:34:46Speaker 5: talk about him coming out and going one, two, three
- 1:34:48Speaker 5: the next inning. Yeah, because that takes the freaking cohonents.
- 1:34:51Speaker 3: Bro We rode like they him, I mean.
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: He out more a tagging up are the two biggest
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: Yeah moment you talk.
- 1:34:57Speaker 5: About baseball people, that was the wrong thing to do
- 1:35:01Speaker 5: is bringing back out.
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: No, no, no, I'm more taken out.
- 1:35:04Speaker 5: Yeah, it's in the baseball like if you talk like no,
- 1:35:06Speaker 5: you don't tag up on that.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: And I'm more tagged up and got the second.
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: And more tagged up on a deep fly ball by
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: KB which earlier in the game the win turned around,
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: which would have been a home run that and al Mora,
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: who was a rookie, had the wits about him to
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: read where that ball was going, understand that it's either
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: a homer and out or probably homer and out.
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: How high body contributed on that.
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: It goes and tags up and gets the second base
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: and then the rest of most.
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: Coaches are going to tell you halfway yeah, and he
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: went back and tagged out.
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: Yeah, which is the baseball with the base open, walk
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: me and then goes over us and the rest is history.
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: But the fact that Chappie can get through that, then
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: we have a seventeen minute rain delay. But when Raja
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: hit that home run?
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: What do you think before Raja hit the homer after?
- 1:35:53Speaker 5: You know, because kind of the rule of thumb is
- 1:35:55Speaker 5: if you as a as a pitcher, if you get
- 1:35:57Speaker 5: taken out of the inning and you have a runner on,
- 1:35:59Speaker 5: that's yours you stay. You have to stay in the
- 1:36:01Speaker 5: dugout till that run scores or they get out of
- 1:36:03Speaker 5: the inny.
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: So I gave up the hit to Jose Ramirez.
- 1:36:10Speaker 5: Uh, who's their damn guy or Brandy Geyer. He could
- 1:36:16Speaker 5: hit a damn cannon ball for as long as that
- 1:36:18Speaker 5: cannonball is coming from the left side, he could hit it.
- 1:36:20Speaker 5: Hits the ball in the gap, hose Airmera scores, So
- 1:36:24Speaker 5: it's six to four now right, he had a two
- 1:36:28Speaker 5: run homer, right, yes, yep, so he hit the double.
- 1:36:33Speaker 5: So I'm I'm like, all right, I'm good. I'm going
- 1:36:35Speaker 5: to the clubhouse. Well, I go into the clubhouse. You know,
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: Cleveland's clubhouse. You got to go down five stairs and
- 1:36:41Speaker 5: up three hundred and forty two stairs to get up there.
- 1:36:45Speaker 5: Welly get up there. They've got the damn champagne. Oh
- 1:36:47Speaker 5: my god, I fuck, they got the signs World Series champs.
- 1:36:51Speaker 5: They've got they walk to the clubhouse too. They've got
- 1:36:54Speaker 5: the damn what you mud call it, the saran wrap
- 1:36:57Speaker 5: overall lockers, the whole thing.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:37:00Speaker 5: So I kind of come in and I'm like, this
- 1:37:01Speaker 5: is weird.
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: You know, how are you going in there?
- 1:37:05Speaker 5: I'm just curious because I was done and I was
- 1:37:06Speaker 5: gonna go get out of my stuff and then come
- 1:37:09Speaker 5: back down really well, and I have a pop too.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: Okay, I'm done for the day, dude. I'm it's it's.
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: It's literally, your job is season's over.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: My season's over.
- 1:37:19Speaker 5: I cannot re enter and there's no game eight. Okay,
- 1:37:23Speaker 5: So I get in there and I'm taking my I
- 1:37:26Speaker 5: take one cleat off, I get my ankle tape off,
- 1:37:28Speaker 5: and you know, Raja's got pitch thirty seven from Chapman
- 1:37:33Speaker 5: that he keeps filing off or whatever. And I go
- 1:37:35Speaker 5: to untie my second shoe, and I hear the crack
- 1:37:39Speaker 5: and I look up and I just see the ball
- 1:37:43Speaker 5: going over the fence.
- 1:37:45Speaker 3: Oh, I take my shoe off.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: What was the cluby's name, Willie? I take my shoe off, and.
- 1:37:52Speaker 5: I they had the entrance right there. I didn't know
- 1:37:55Speaker 5: he was coming around the corner. I throw my shoe
- 1:37:58Speaker 5: as hard as I can the entrance. I go, wille
- 1:38:02Speaker 5: what he comes around the corner. The cleat missed him
- 1:38:05Speaker 5: by this far.
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: That's great.
- 1:38:07Speaker 5: I go get this fucking ship down. There was people
- 1:38:11Speaker 5: that came out of places in that clubhouse I've never
- 1:38:13Speaker 5: seen before. Champagne gets put up saran wrap over the top,
- 1:38:20Speaker 5: signs down the whole thing. And then so I changed
- 1:38:24Speaker 5: and I come back down to the to the dugout.
- 1:38:26Speaker 5: But he was not happy with me. I apologize to
- 1:38:29Speaker 5: him after the fact.
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: But what what do you remember when we had the
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: rein delay? Where were you at first? Were you?
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: Were you in the dugout?
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: So when you came into the weight room, was it
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: after the fact, when everyone's coming in or like, what
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: what's your biggest.
- 1:38:42Speaker 5: I followed everybody in there, so we all went in there,
- 1:38:47Speaker 5: and I remember it kind of being at first a
- 1:38:50Speaker 5: little somber, you know. Everybody kind of got in there.
- 1:38:54Speaker 5: It was almost like a simultaneous deep breath, you know, sorry,
- 1:39:00Speaker 5: And I remember sitting there for a second kind of
- 1:39:05Speaker 5: you know, one of these like all right, like you're
- 1:39:08Speaker 5: kind of you went back in your corner as a fighter,
- 1:39:11Speaker 5: you know what I'm saying, Like I got my breath,
- 1:39:12Speaker 5: I'm gonn get a drink of water, maybe Miller light.
- 1:39:15Speaker 5: And I just remember Jay, Hey, I remember Jay start talking,
- 1:39:23Speaker 5: And at first it really surprised me because Jay doesn't
- 1:39:27Speaker 5: talk right, Like Jay's not a vocal guy. And I
- 1:39:31Speaker 5: kind of sat up and I looked at him, and
- 1:39:34Speaker 5: I don't remember I think him speaking surprised me, you know, like,
- 1:39:40Speaker 5: holy shit, what's he saying? What's he saying? But I
- 1:39:42Speaker 5: don't remember the words of what he said. I just
- 1:39:45Speaker 5: remember him saying, all right, fuck it, guys, we have
- 1:39:49Speaker 5: a restart were zero zero. It's kind of what I remember.
- 1:39:52Speaker 5: I don't know if that's exactly what he said. You
- 1:39:54Speaker 5: guys can correct me and then the best part of
- 1:39:57Speaker 5: the whole meeting was they're like, hey, they're pulling on
- 1:40:00Speaker 5: the tart and Schwarver's.
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: Leading off and he walks out and he goes, I'm
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: gonna get a hit.
- 1:40:04Speaker 5: You drive me, you you fucking drive me in to
- 1:40:07Speaker 5: whoever he was talking to.
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: He got the lead off single.
- 1:40:10Speaker 3: Yeah, he came by me. I was selling the bench.
- 1:40:12Speaker 4: He had his bank gloves on, and Shawl was pitching
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: me the cutter guy, and he goes, this guy.
- 1:40:16Speaker 3: Throws me and fucking cut her in.
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: I'm want to knocked off the buck got at.
- 1:40:19Speaker 3: It right in my face.
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: His fucking second year Kyle Schwarmer broken knee, just came
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: back the third game of the season. Came back as
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: like the fact that they let him come back, I
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: think speaks volumes to us too, because our belief in him. Yeah, right,
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: Like if we didn't, I think if the boys didn't
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: believe that.
- 1:40:39Speaker 5: There's no other young guy, no way that would have
- 1:40:42Speaker 5: come back and been allowed in that clubhouse like Swarber was.
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: And he hit the ball so hard.
- 1:40:46Speaker 4: Kimnus was in the grass with a shift and I
- 1:40:48Speaker 4: swear it's like a foot to his right or left
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: and didn't been time to get it.
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: Yeah, so we reset. I remember in the dugout in
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: the ninth when we were hitting in the ninth, everyone
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: was fucking white as a ghost, bro, because I was like,
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: even me, I was, bro, I'm sitting there at first,
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: I'm like, this curse is fucking real. I'm just playing
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: with dirt like I couldn't feeling. I couldn't even hear myself.
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: I couldn't hear anything. I was literally numb. And we
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: get into dugout and everyone's white as a ghost. And
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: then Chaddie gets us through it and we give this
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: the rain delay and then we ended up going out
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: scoring winning.
- 1:41:25Speaker 3: Another one that Miggie doesn't get enough love that second
- 1:41:27Speaker 3: base hit never of.
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: Course, yeah, because they ended up scoring a run in
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: the ninth one. Yeah, yeah, you know what I mean.
- 1:41:32Speaker 4: Er was on first and I'm like he's fixing the
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: steel and going back to that. I remember that home
- 1:41:37Speaker 4: run like usually I could turn the page really fast
- 1:41:39Speaker 4: and like okay, on to the next thing, like I
- 1:41:41Speaker 4: was legit. Could not get that out of my head
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: catching for the rest of that inning, like it was
- 1:41:45Speaker 4: just like.
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: The rest of my life.
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: Bro, Damn.
- 1:41:47Speaker 2: I mean, I know we won, but I still see
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: Rajer was a special assistant for MLB, and I saw
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: him a lot, especially when I was at the Yankees
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: bro Every time I saw him, I got like, you
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: know what I mean? We won, Like, so we win again,
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: let's go back. KB gets the round, ber I got,
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: I catch the last out. Where are you? What are
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: you thinking? This is now your third World Series championship,
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: one hundred and eight year curse.
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: I was not well in the dugout. Was not well.
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: You hate side note, you hate sitting the bench.
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: He like he can't handle the nerves, all right, you'd
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: go to your routine during the game.
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: It's one of the greatest left handed pictures of all time.
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: Just does not on an actual serious note, dealing with
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: his own demons of like nerves routine to get him
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: in the one of the greatest left handed pitchers of
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: all time Hall of Fame pitcher, and everyone goes through that, you.
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: Know, like, I didn't like so.
- 1:42:51Speaker 5: I played in two incredibly historic stadiums, Okay for the
- 1:42:56Speaker 5: majority of my career, even when Rick redid their dugouts,
- 1:43:02Speaker 5: two of the worst places to sit in the dugout
- 1:43:04Speaker 5: and watch the fucking the game.
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: You're we're in Cleveland, John, Well.
- 1:43:10Speaker 5: I'm just saying, well, hold on, normally, I'm talking about normally.
- 1:43:14Speaker 5: Wrigley is four and a half miles from home plate. Okay,
- 1:43:19Speaker 5: Fenway is twenty seven feet from home plate, and you
- 1:43:23Speaker 5: can't see anything.
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: All right. Yah.
- 1:43:28Speaker 5: I know it looked as if I wasn't a great teammate,
- 1:43:31Speaker 5: but I liked being able to see what was actually happening,
- 1:43:36Speaker 5: because you know how it is. You sit on the bench,
- 1:43:38Speaker 5: guy gets wrung up on a call. The guy goes, oh,
- 1:43:40Speaker 5: that's not a strike. Now, everybody in the dugouts like that.
- 1:43:42Speaker 5: Get your shit together, right. Well, when you're sitting in
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: downstairs and you watch the TV like, no, that's a good pitch.
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: So you were downstairs when we wanted them.
- 1:43:48Speaker 5: No, hold on, I was just saying, I gotta know, John,
- 1:43:51Speaker 5: this is why I was not well. I was up there.
- 1:43:54Speaker 5: We bring in Carl Edwards Junior to finish the game. Okay,
- 1:43:59Speaker 5: I'm going back. The only way to call my nerves
- 1:44:02Speaker 5: is I'm going to boresy, and I'm looking at the
- 1:44:03Speaker 5: scouting report with boresy like, all right, I know this
- 1:44:05Speaker 5: dude only throws cut or curveball. What do we got
- 1:44:09Speaker 5: And he'd be like, all right, we've got X, Y
- 1:44:11Speaker 5: and Z.
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: Mike Borzello was our like our scouting report coordinator, but
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: such good game call.
- 1:44:18Speaker 5: So so that, yeah, that's I should have said that first.
- 1:44:21Speaker 5: But so anyway, I'm going to him to where I'm
- 1:44:23Speaker 5: like trying to call the game, trying to take my
- 1:44:26Speaker 5: mind off of what's going on, and I'm literally pacing
- 1:44:29Speaker 5: from him to the end of Doug, him to the
- 1:44:31Speaker 5: end of Dougah. So Carl gets two quick outs and
- 1:44:34Speaker 5: I'm like, let's go, we got to get one more
- 1:44:37Speaker 5: infield pop up. Let's just make it simple. Okay, I
- 1:44:42Speaker 5: think he walks. Somebody walks. Now we bringing Mike Montgomery.
- 1:44:48Speaker 5: No offense to Mike Montgomery. Okay, but I look at
- 1:44:52Speaker 5: Borsy and I go, what are we doing.
- 1:44:56Speaker 3: I'm like, we got no fend.
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: Like I said, no fense.
- 1:44:58Speaker 5: We're in the tree trope, roundant and closed for us
- 1:45:01Speaker 5: for three quarters of the year until we got Chappie, we.
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: Got Woody, we got other area and lack here down there.
- 1:45:07Speaker 5: Yeah, Arieta, like we got these people once again, Mike,
- 1:45:10Speaker 5: no offense, But well.
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: I love you.
- 1:45:14Speaker 5: We've got, We've got.
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: He was one of their bench players.
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: Michael Martinez. Ye.
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: First the Battle World series.
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: World series, mind you.
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: Because they made a switch when he brought on the left.
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: Remind me to go back to that hold on.
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: Who was it, Coca Coca Chris.
- 1:45:31Speaker 5: That's right, he took Coco out. We did something I
- 1:45:35Speaker 5: can't remember what we did. We made a pitching change.
- 1:45:37Speaker 5: They brought Coco in for that guy. Coco only was
- 1:45:41Speaker 5: hitting left handed, and then we brought in Mike Martinez,
- 1:45:45Speaker 5: so they took Coco out. And so anyway, I literally
- 1:45:51Speaker 5: take one step, I come off the rail. I take
- 1:45:54Speaker 5: one step to boards. eCos, don't worry, we have spin.
- 1:45:58Speaker 5: And I'm like that sounds. I go, oh, Montgomery is
- 1:46:02Speaker 5: a badass.
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: Curveball. We're good.
- 1:46:04Speaker 5: Let's go first pitch curveball, roll over to KB. I
- 1:46:08Speaker 5: did everything I could to hurdle that thing. I went
- 1:46:12Speaker 5: to jump and I was like nope, and put my
- 1:46:14Speaker 5: foot down and then jumped. And then as I did
- 1:46:17Speaker 5: that and landed, Jason Hammill face plants right next to me,
- 1:46:19Speaker 5: and I'm like, I am so glad I put my
- 1:46:21Speaker 5: foot on the rail because that would have been me.
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: Oh bro, that's celebration. The celebration that night was special.
- 1:46:30Speaker 2: We party, we pop champagne, we fly back to Wrigley,
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: we get we're all blitzed, right, And I remember getting
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: off the bus at Wrigley. Well, I remember on the
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: field giving you this big hung bro, like it felt
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: so good, Like you win the World Series and first
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: off your gas run a two year run for me
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: at least, like I just learned how to win fifteen.
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: All my energy now is winning the World Series this year.
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: It's like a lot make or break so game sen
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: of the World Shiti. I actually remember talking to this
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: at second base at some point during the same seven
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: I'm like, bro, thank god, the season's over tomorrow. Like
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: win or lose, right, We're still at the heat of
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: the battle, but like to be able to just turn
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: off for a second and talk to him. Giving you
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: guys a hug, right, is the best feeling in the world.
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: We party with our families the plane ride, have great
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: pictures of my parents and Emily, my girlfriend then soon
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: to be fiance, and my wife baby Mama love her.
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: But just the celebration of the families. And then we
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: get home to Wrigley and I have the trophy. So
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: I walk off the bus with the trophy and like
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: there's fans outside of Wrigley and it's great. And I
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: look at VJ Air traveling secretary. I'm like, hey, like,
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: what do I do with this now? I don't know?
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: So I just took it home. I took the trophy home. Well, bro,
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: what's so mad? I not only going to make it
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: so mad. I get home at like six thirty. We
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: lay down for like, I don't know, an hour and
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: a half, like that's the only sea behalf for like
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: four days. Get text phone, I'm up and Vj's like, hey,
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: John's pissed off. He took the trophy home. And I'm like,
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: how the fuck? First off, how the fuck does John
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: know I have the trophy? It's thirty in the morning,
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: and I'm like, I don't really care, Like the trophies
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: in my bed overlooking the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Right,
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: So I'm like, fuck, John's mad at me. Right, I'm like,
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: all right, So I get up, which was a great
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: reason to get up.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: It was love mad. It was yeah, no, I know,
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: it wasn't bring.
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: The trophy back to Wrigley. And then I think it
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: was like nine thirty or ten am. Emily and I
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: got to the bar Bottle blonde O. Our guy Eric
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: Farron opened up. I texted him, hey, you opened up.
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: He's big Cubs fan. And we sat at the bar
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: from like ten am to like two am, and then
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: from two am we went to underground and just went
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: till like the next morning, and like throughout the day
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: everyone started coming and partying. But for me, it was
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: like it was just I was in heaven.
- 1:48:59Speaker 3: Bro.
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: It was like my dream came true, right and I'm
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: with all my friends and family. But where what were
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: you doing after? What were you doing that you texted
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: at eight thirty in the morning saying you're mad at
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: me for taking a trophy?
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: And I don't know if I went to sleep at
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: that particular time.
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: Air was pregnant. It was now sy Sy Elizabeth soon
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: to be nine, soon to be nine, which is crazy,
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: So I.
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: Don't, I don't.
- 1:49:29Speaker 5: There's a little bit of a blur there one sleep
- 1:49:33Speaker 5: deprivation to some beverages were in involved there. I I
- 1:49:43Speaker 5: just remember, I don't know how I even came to
- 1:49:46Speaker 5: about it. I was like where somebody might have said
- 1:49:48Speaker 5: something to me, and I was like, where's the trophy?
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: BJ?
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: And he goes Riz took it home and I got mad.
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: Fucking right, I took it home. Bro, I was there
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: with the one hundred lost team.
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: Well that's not my him, it really is all. It's
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: not my fault. I had you got to pick better.
- 1:50:04Speaker 3: Timy agreed, agreed, whatever, John.
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: Anyway, let's get let's get to the parade.
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: What what happened?
- 1:50:15Speaker 5: Rossie almost died? We're on the We're on the bus
- 1:50:17Speaker 5: so well, Rossi lack and Woody almost died.
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: I'm on the second last bus with KB and the
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: country cowboys.
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: Get right here, didn't you?
- 1:50:24Speaker 3: I had my nose almost.
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: We're pulling out a Wrigley and we're getting like these
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: look granted. Meanwhile, this is the first time the Cubs
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: have ever done a parade, right, Like, no one knows
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: what the last parade was like. So we have we
- 1:50:39Speaker 2: have the buses, the double decker buses, and we have
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: like our guides on.
- 1:50:42Speaker 5: There not getting rupty. But do you remember when we
- 1:50:44Speaker 5: got to the clubhouse and I had that whiskey. I
- 1:50:48Speaker 5: never told you this. I had somebody date that whiskey.
- 1:50:53Speaker 5: It was from nineteen oh eight.
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: No shit, really. I had a whiskey too from nineteen
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: o eight that I took a shower of my dad
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: after we won.
- 1:50:59Speaker 5: So that remember that and my locker I had the
- 1:51:01Speaker 5: old bottle that had the messed up thing. It was
- 1:51:03Speaker 5: from nineteen oh eight and you'r me, you your dad
- 1:51:06Speaker 5: my Oh yeah yes, And we all took like the
- 1:51:09Speaker 5: cork was like dissolved in it, and we're like, well,
- 1:51:11Speaker 5: we're either gonna that.
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: That moment at Wrigley where we were all there, yeah, yeah,
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: that was cool.
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: Everybody's family.
- 1:51:17Speaker 2: I have a I had a guitar signed by all
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: the boys with the World Series patch.
- 1:51:22Speaker 3: That's what I've got. He gave that to me. He
- 1:51:24Speaker 3: gave me. We had my favorite thing I've got.
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: Everyone was there and it was just so special. And
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: we get on the buses and we have like our
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: like almost tour guide on the bus basically giving us
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: like a tutorial, like, hey, when we get out of Wrigley,
- 1:51:37Speaker 2: the power lines are really low, so there's gonna be
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: a few times we have to dock on.
- 1:51:40Speaker 3: We didn't get that message.
- 1:51:43Speaker 4: We had camera cruit on ours, okay, and these these
- 1:51:47Speaker 4: wires that pulled a sheet so we could walk from
- 1:51:49Speaker 4: the parking lot to the to the States. So there
- 1:51:52Speaker 4: was these these steel wires that held the curtain up. Well,
- 1:51:57Speaker 4: everybody had forgotten. They didn't tell us this, but everybody
- 1:51:59Speaker 4: for gotten.
- 1:52:00Speaker 5: Everybody's excited, Yeah, how are we doing it?
- 1:52:06Speaker 4: Comes we go to that and the camera guy was
- 1:52:08Speaker 4: facing us, having a camera shooting us on the back
- 1:52:12Speaker 4: of the bus.
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: There's footage of this, and I've never seen it.
- 1:52:17Speaker 3: I hadn't seen it.
- 1:52:17Speaker 4: I han't seen it, but I know the camera guy
- 1:52:20Speaker 4: got hit first. His camera caught and the thing pulled
- 1:52:23Speaker 4: really taut right as we're driving, and so his camera
- 1:52:27Speaker 4: goes boom and falls and then whips the line right
- 1:52:32Speaker 4: across Lackey's hat.
- 1:52:33Speaker 3: Sunglasses went off. He got hit across the face. I
- 1:52:35Speaker 3: got hit right in the nose, nose bleeding, Thank god,
- 1:52:38Speaker 3: if it would hit me. Here we go off the
- 1:52:40Speaker 3: back back dead. Probably I probably got a statue.
- 1:52:45Speaker 5: And I don't know what happened, but I kind of
- 1:52:47Speaker 5: went like this, like I don't know why you escaped.
- 1:52:51Speaker 5: Had I had a damn gouge in the top of
- 1:52:54Speaker 5: my head right here for like.
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: Six I remember seeing you guys bleeding because I was
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: in the bus and front of you.
- 1:53:00Speaker 4: Yeah, that was I had my wife at the time
- 1:53:03Speaker 4: breaking out tampons and stick up my nose.
- 1:53:06Speaker 3: It stopped bleeding. I could wave to the fans.
- 1:53:09Speaker 2: I was five million people.
- 1:53:11Speaker 3: Five million people stage was crazy.
- 1:53:14Speaker 2: I'm sure the Boston parades were insane, the duck boats,
- 1:53:17Speaker 2: the passion, but it wasn't It wasn't bro that. Our
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: parade was like it went forever and the fans and
- 1:53:24Speaker 2: then we get on stage, what like, what's your what
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: do you take away from all that?
- 1:53:29Speaker 5: So I say this when we were on stage and
- 1:53:31Speaker 5: they were like calling people up there to like say something.
- 1:53:34Speaker 5: When you're standing there and you're with your boys and
- 1:53:37Speaker 5: you're like kind of away from you. You know you're there,
- 1:53:40Speaker 5: but you're removed, you know what I'm saying, Like you're
- 1:53:42Speaker 5: not having a microphone in front of you and having
- 1:53:44Speaker 5: to talk.
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: You're like, damn, that's a lot of people. You're kind
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: of like, that's a lot of people.
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: There's people in fucking trees.
- 1:53:50Speaker 3: That's all I remember was heads and then the tree top.
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: But deep remember crossing the Chicago River that it was blue.
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: They died of the river blue.
- 1:54:00Speaker 5: So Big Gem's like, hey, John, you're next I'm like, yeah,
- 1:54:03Speaker 5: cool man, I've got enough liquid courage.
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: We're good. I don't like talking in front of people.
- 1:54:08Speaker 5: And five million people, five million people have a million
- 1:54:11Speaker 5: and he calls me like somebody talks.
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: I think it was you. I think it went after you.
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: And he's like, you're up, let's go, well, stumble up there,
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: get up to the podium and you look up and
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: I was like, uh, I don't know what to say.
- 1:54:29Speaker 5: There's a lot there's a lot of damn people out here.
- 1:54:32Speaker 5: From five feet right, you're staying with your boys like
- 1:54:35Speaker 5: you're good, you no problem. You're like, damn, that's a
- 1:54:38Speaker 5: lot of people. You get up and you're like, holy fuck,
- 1:54:41Speaker 5: what is this? And then all I said was how
- 1:54:44Speaker 5: about this shit? That's what came out of my mouth.
- 1:54:49Speaker 5: That was that was my how about this ship? And
- 1:54:53Speaker 5: of course as soon as I say it, I look
- 1:54:56Speaker 5: right there and there's like a nine year old kid
- 1:54:58Speaker 5: just looking at me like.
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: That, I'm.
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: Once again the asshole.
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: Sorry, we want when you win, you can do anything.
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: Yeah, you should have said.
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: I mean you used to always tell me though, winning
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: solves everything. It's all when you win. And I tell
- 1:55:10Speaker 2: us all young players that I play with, especially now
- 1:55:12Speaker 2: in the social media air days, like winning solves all
- 1:55:17Speaker 2: your problems and you said that where it's like you
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: can come up and have this whole social media following
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: and do all this stuff. But when you win, that's
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: how you make the real money, like, because when you win,
- 1:55:29Speaker 2: you can do whatever you want.
- 1:55:30Speaker 3: That was my saying being a backup catcher. It's like
- 1:55:34Speaker 3: everybody wants a winner. Everybody wants a winner. You're on
- 1:55:36Speaker 3: a winning team, you're just gonna you know, solves everything.
- 1:55:39Speaker 5: And the guys so they had to keep playing, you know,
- 1:55:41Speaker 5: Like you're looking at sures Er Verlander right now, like
- 1:55:43Speaker 5: they're forty two, forty whatever, forty one forty two still pitching.
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: Well, they're pitching because they've won right right right. And
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: I'm not saying they don't have good stuff and they
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: shouldn't be pitching. They still have good stuff.
- 1:55:54Speaker 5: But teams want those jokers around because they've won right
- 1:55:59Speaker 5: right right right. Like you, if you win, people want you.
- 1:56:04Speaker 3: And there's a lot of knowledge in winning and experience
- 1:56:06Speaker 3: and having that no doubt.
- 1:56:08Speaker 4: I want to know because we're going down that road
- 1:56:11Speaker 4: looking back at everything. Right, you're retired, you've been home
- 1:56:14Speaker 4: raising kids, enjoying your life, Like looking back ten years ago, Now,
- 1:56:22Speaker 4: what would you tell John Lester than that, you know,
- 1:56:27Speaker 4: now enjoy it more.
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: Yeah, you fucking enjoyed it though.
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: Man, I did enjoy it, but I didn't. I didn't
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: relish in it.
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:56:38Speaker 5: Like I had this conversation with ROSSI one day, and
- 1:56:41Speaker 5: I'm kind of envious of like the relationships that he has,
- 1:56:44Speaker 5: which obviously little different personalities.
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: Okay, like lately more vivacious.
- 1:56:50Speaker 2: Like Dancing with the Stars. Yeah, yeah, you know, Dancing
- 1:56:53Speaker 2: with the Stars lives in the middle of nowhere.
- 1:56:55Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, but my thing is is like and
- 1:57:00Speaker 5: I'll never forget this. So it's Game one of the
- 1:57:02Speaker 5: twenty thirteen World Series. Okay, Fenway Park, Me and you
- 1:57:07Speaker 5: were getting ready to go out, and their weight room
- 1:57:11Speaker 5: is upstairs, and where the lounge cherry to hang out
- 1:57:14Speaker 5: was upstairs. Well, I walk through, and I come up
- 1:57:16Speaker 5: the stairs and I hear music playing. It sounds like
- 1:57:18Speaker 5: radios is playing in the or the you know, speakers
- 1:57:22Speaker 5: playing in the weight room. And I get up there
- 1:57:24Speaker 5: and fucking Kenny Chesney has like ten dudes around him
- 1:57:28Speaker 5: just jamming big Green tractor, And I look at those guys,
- 1:57:32Speaker 5: and I'm like, man, that sure looks fun. I had
- 1:57:35Speaker 5: to go hop my ass on the bike and get
- 1:57:37Speaker 5: ready for game one.
- 1:57:38Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:57:39Speaker 5: Point of what I'm trying to make is I'm not
- 1:57:41Speaker 5: saying that's the time to relish in it, but the
- 1:57:43Speaker 5: times that Dabbo comes into the clubhouse, or Brett Eldris
- 1:57:50Speaker 5: comes in the clubhouse or eighty Vet or Bill Murray
- 1:57:53Speaker 5: or whateva, taking ten minutes and going over there and
- 1:57:57Speaker 5: talking to him, stopping what I'm doing and going and
- 1:58:00Speaker 5: talking to him. But also too, I know in the
- 1:58:03Speaker 5: back of my head, if I stop what I'm doing,
- 1:58:05Speaker 5: I'm not going to go back and finish it.
- 1:58:07Speaker 3: Yeah, you know so, but that's what made you great too.
- 1:58:10Speaker 3: So it's like I definitely, I definitely.
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: Get that, but I do.
- 1:58:15Speaker 5: Wish I would have put just to tick more effort
- 1:58:18Speaker 5: into some relationships in my when I was playing.
- 1:58:23Speaker 4: That's what's all about, right, We're talking about all these
- 1:58:27Speaker 4: stories we're going to tell throughout this series. Is like
- 1:58:32Speaker 4: it takes a group of special men to come together
- 1:58:35Speaker 4: and you create it. We're brothers for life, right, and
- 1:58:37Speaker 4: so those are racist ships are special and I think
- 1:58:40Speaker 4: they grow.
- 1:58:40Speaker 3: But when you're in the middle of it. You're just
- 1:58:42Speaker 3: in the middle of it. You're doing you bro, You're
- 1:58:43Speaker 3: doing You're You're you.
- 1:58:45Speaker 4: You were brought in at a high price tag to
- 1:58:47Speaker 4: establish what winning is and this is how we go
- 1:58:50Speaker 4: about our ship. And THEO recognized that because he had
- 1:58:54Speaker 4: been around you, and you had been around great players,
- 1:58:56Speaker 4: and that's the great thing about being a veteran and
- 1:58:58Speaker 4: passing that stuff down. So the reason why you get
- 1:59:00Speaker 4: the ball in game seven and we are all i mean,
- 1:59:02Speaker 4: going game one of each freaking series. It's like, this
- 1:59:06Speaker 4: is the writer, die dude, that's putting us on our back.
- 1:59:08Speaker 4: This is a motherfucker that here we come right and
- 1:59:10Speaker 4: after him, we got another good one, you know, and
- 1:59:12Speaker 4: we got another good one.
- 1:59:13Speaker 2: John, you single handedly, I said at the beginning, you're
- 1:59:16Speaker 2: the best freeing and signing in Cups history. You brought
- 1:59:19Speaker 2: winning single handedly to an organization, from your leadership on
- 1:59:26Speaker 2: how you went about your business, from how you treated
- 1:59:28Speaker 2: everyone else, from how you were like a giant teddy
- 1:59:32Speaker 2: bear at times but also a prick as well.
- 1:59:35Speaker 3: So generous every team dinner, like all.
- 1:59:39Speaker 2: My cowboy boots are from John. On John's dime, I
- 1:59:41Speaker 2: have two pairs of these have a Rolex two hundred,
- 1:59:43Speaker 2: und win rolelegs, private jet hours, you flew me an
- 1:59:46Speaker 2: Emily home on your dime, blew Grandma passed away. Like
- 1:59:51Speaker 2: all of these things just created so much love and
- 1:59:55Speaker 2: within and brow through one sixty.
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: Two also to man like.
- 2:00:01Speaker 5: You're my boys, Like you know what I'm saying, Like
- 2:00:03Speaker 5: E like yeah, but like everybody's my Like if you're
- 2:00:06Speaker 5: on my team and we're doing it like we're we're
- 2:00:10Speaker 5: we're supposed to be in this together. I spend more
- 2:00:12Speaker 5: time with you than my family, right, So I didn't
- 2:00:18Speaker 5: care if it were in the tree, no offense. I
- 2:00:21Speaker 5: didn't care if it was your grandmother or if it
- 2:00:23Speaker 5: was the twenty sixth man on the roster's grandmother.
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: If you need to get home, I've.
- 2:00:28Speaker 5: Been blessed with this perk, right, Yeah, I put in
- 2:00:32Speaker 5: the work and I got it and whatever. But at
- 2:00:34Speaker 5: the end of the day, that's not like you should
- 2:00:38Speaker 5: go home and if you got to go home at
- 2:00:40Speaker 5: midnight and get on you go. Like That's the way
- 2:00:43Speaker 5: I look at things. And I didn't do it because
- 2:00:46Speaker 5: I wanted the fucking story on ESPN. Never because I
- 2:00:50Speaker 5: loved every I loved you guys. I showed my love
- 2:00:53Speaker 5: in different ways. Wasn't the nicest person sometimes, but I
- 2:00:59Speaker 5: cared about what I did, and I cared about you guys,
- 2:01:01Speaker 5: and I cared about fucking winning, dude, Like you play
- 2:01:04Speaker 5: fucking sports to win. He said, that's right, bro, played
- 2:01:08Speaker 5: to just go participate.
- 2:01:11Speaker 2: In an air of In an air of social media,
- 2:01:15Speaker 2: all the things you and Pharah and your family have
- 2:01:18Speaker 2: done are It's like Instagram versus reality.
- 2:01:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:01:22Speaker 2: You have people who put stuff on Instagram and think
- 2:01:24Speaker 2: they're living this lavish life. You lived it behind the scenes,
- 2:01:27Speaker 2: and you have done the coolest things that nobody's ever
- 2:01:31Speaker 2: heard of doing and literally changed my life on that
- 2:01:35Speaker 2: because when I was younger, it was like, you know,
- 2:01:36Speaker 2: you want to flaunt a little bit, like I'm in
- 2:01:38Speaker 2: the big leagues, I'm young, I'm single. It different, and
- 2:01:40Speaker 2: then I see you and fifteen come over and it
- 2:01:43Speaker 2: was like from that day on, like I rarely ever
- 2:01:47Speaker 2: post anything I'm really doing because of how you went
- 2:01:50Speaker 2: about it and like how you shape my life as
- 2:01:52Speaker 2: a twenty five year old. Now I'm thirty six, you
- 2:01:56Speaker 2: know what I mean. So it's like I don't think
- 2:01:58Speaker 2: you really understand how much, John, I don't think you
- 2:02:03Speaker 2: understand how what you mean to me? All right? I
- 2:02:07Speaker 2: got one one question too, because he asked about the
- 2:02:10Speaker 2: ten years. If you can go back to that season,
- 2:02:15Speaker 2: playoffs or regular season, what's one moment you go back
- 2:02:18Speaker 2: to that stands out, that's like, you'll never forget.
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: The whole season, the whole.
- 2:02:26Speaker 2: Season, spring training, regular season, postseason, whatever.
- 2:02:34Speaker 5: I think the feeling I had walking out of the
- 2:02:38Speaker 5: dugout with Rossy in Game five of the World Series, damn,
- 2:02:43Speaker 5: and like stepping on that top step. It was the
- 2:02:45Speaker 5: old dugout. I always went on the left side and
- 2:02:51Speaker 5: stepping out. I always tried to make it a point
- 2:02:54Speaker 5: when I stepped out to look around. And I got
- 2:02:57Speaker 5: out and I started in left field, and I looked.
- 2:03:01Speaker 5: I didn't go behind me, but I looked all the
- 2:03:03Speaker 5: way as I'm walking, I looked as far as I
- 2:03:06Speaker 5: could look this way, and I was like, there is
- 2:03:09Speaker 5: not an empty fucking seat in this place.
- 2:03:12Speaker 1: Wow, like that feeling, that's a badass feeling.
- 2:03:17Speaker 3: Your fucking song came on. I was so emotional.
- 2:03:19Speaker 4: I was singing, Jason Alden, you no, We're here at
- 2:03:22Speaker 4: the top of my fucking lugs.
- 2:03:24Speaker 3: For hide my mask just so you could a go wreck.
- 2:03:26Speaker 4: Because I was just like my heart was on another
- 2:03:28Speaker 4: level and you're out there just like here we freaking go.
- 2:03:32Speaker 5: So I think I was on like pitch three and
- 2:03:34Speaker 5: it's like a point where like the drums come in
- 2:03:37Speaker 5: or whatever, and you know, I had my little routine
- 2:03:41Speaker 5: that I did.
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: I looked down or I do this look down. I
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: never put the ball on my glove and then I'd
- 2:03:47Speaker 1: lift my leg.
- 2:03:48Speaker 5: Tap the ball or tapped the glove and then look
- 2:03:50Speaker 5: home and ROSSI is back there before I throw the ball.
- 2:03:54Speaker 3: And he'said, I had to get out on the Uh.
- 2:03:59Speaker 3: We've got a couple that.
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: Was like that. We were talking about this last night.
- 2:04:05Speaker 5: That moment, like I'll that moment is like ingrained in
- 2:04:09Speaker 5: my head. And then the other moment was we were
- 2:04:11Speaker 5: talking about last night the thirteen World Series for Game
- 2:04:13Speaker 5: one and national anthem plays and the flyover was late
- 2:04:20Speaker 5: and you know, I'm getting ready to throw a pitch
- 2:04:23Speaker 5: and all of a sudden, you just hear you know,
- 2:04:25Speaker 5: it's it's pitch black.
- 2:04:26Speaker 3: You can before the game, yeah, Mary J. Blige whales, Yeah,
- 2:04:30Speaker 3: And then this flyover while all you see.
- 2:04:33Speaker 5: Is the after burners as they passed Fenway and just
- 2:04:36Speaker 5: do this and it's loud and you just like you
- 2:04:39Speaker 5: could feel them. And I was getting ready to throw
- 2:04:41Speaker 5: a pitch and I put my foot back down and
- 2:04:44Speaker 5: I love planes. I love flyovers, and so I'm like
- 2:04:47Speaker 5: looking for him, just trying to see what kind of
- 2:04:49Speaker 5: planes they were or whatever, and I, you know, kind
- 2:04:52Speaker 5: of dig back in and I looked down and Rossie
- 2:04:54Speaker 5: and ROSSI squatted down. He's like yeah, but like at
- 2:05:00Speaker 5: the same time, it's like, you know, like you're having fun.
- 2:05:04Speaker 5: You're having fun. It's a grind, but it's it's the
- 2:05:06Speaker 5: best man like, when you're in that moment. I wouldn't
- 2:05:12Speaker 5: I wouldn't trade that, yeah for anything.
- 2:05:15Speaker 2: Cheers for ten years, ten years? How about that? Hey?
- 2:05:21Speaker 2: By the way, this is John's famous line. Hangovers or
- 2:05:24Speaker 2: ten hangovers are temporary legends last forever, and for us winning,
- 2:05:28Speaker 2: we last forever.
- 2:05:30Speaker 3: Fuck yeah, Johnny Man, that's a wrap.
- 2:05:34Speaker 1: I think that's all you guys are gonna.
- 2:05:38Speaker 3: How long are you talking? Seven hours
