- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Hey Darlene, thanks for joining me.
- 0:06Speaker 3: Thanks for having me.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Darling Czeck, worship leader and singer who is part of
- 0:11Speaker 2: a new film, The House of Worship, that brings together
- 0:14Speaker 2: twenty five years of worship music's most influential artist to
- 0:19Speaker 2: celebrate songs that have shaped generations. Darlene, You've influenced me
- 0:24Speaker 2: and my faith over the years, and you've You've penned
- 0:27Speaker 2: so many incredible worship anthems or worship worthy as the
- 0:31Speaker 2: Lamb Victor's Crown Shout to the Lord. I'm curious, Darling,
- 0:35Speaker 2: when you hear people singing your music and in church today,
- 0:39Speaker 2: what goes through your mind?
- 0:41Speaker 3: Oh? It's funny, isn't it? Because I just kind of
- 0:43Speaker 3: get caught in the moment. I don't really think about
- 0:46Speaker 3: Oh I wrote that. Actually, a lot of times I
- 0:51Speaker 3: totally forget. I'm like, I just get caught in the
- 0:54Speaker 3: worship of God. But you know, it's very humbling, I
- 0:57Speaker 3: will say, And yeah, like just to be a tiny,
- 1:02Speaker 3: tiny part of bringing a prayer to God, that is
- 1:06Speaker 3: the you know, that is a great privilege. So I
- 1:08Speaker 3: never I pray, I never take it for granted.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Anyway.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I think anybody watching this interview is going to want
- 1:14Speaker 2: me to ask you to wanting me to ask you
- 1:16Speaker 2: about Shout to the Lord. It's more than three decades old. Now,
- 1:20Speaker 2: what was in this inspiration for that song when you
- 1:22Speaker 2: were writing it? What were your what was going through
- 1:25Speaker 2: your mind when you wrote it?
- 1:26Speaker 3: Yeah, we had it was a pretty tough time. I'm
- 1:31Speaker 3: going to say, you know that probably lots of people
- 1:34Speaker 3: face it when you want to be in like full
- 1:37Speaker 3: time church ministry and you got to speak dream in
- 1:41Speaker 3: your heart. And there's literally no way I was singing
- 1:44Speaker 3: jingles advertisements, you know, to help, you know, earn money.
- 1:49Speaker 3: You had two little kids, Mike, we had a business
- 1:51Speaker 3: that was not doing great, and you know, we're just
- 1:55Speaker 3: probably too busy. And I just went to the Lord
- 1:58Speaker 3: one day, sat it my piano, opened up the Bible,
- 2:02Speaker 3: kind of just pouring out my heart and you'll find
- 2:05Speaker 3: Shout Lord between some ninety six and summer hundred. And
- 2:09Speaker 3: I say to people, I didn't so much write it
- 2:11Speaker 3: as sing it. I think it took twenty minutes and
- 2:15Speaker 3: I just sang it, and I sang it and I
- 2:17Speaker 3: sang it, and it was just a prayer to the Lord.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I didn't play it to worship Pasta. At the time,
- 2:24Speaker 3: I wasn't a confidence songwriter. So when I finally did,
- 2:28Speaker 3: because I said, oh, I think I might have a song.
- 2:31Speaker 3: It's you know, I've been singing it at home. And
- 2:33Speaker 3: when I finally played it to them, I had them
- 2:36Speaker 3: turn around with their backs to me because I was
- 2:38Speaker 3: so embarrassed, and I'd be like, my Jesus, nice to
- 2:42Speaker 3: you if you change it, if you want to, I
- 2:44Speaker 3: know it's not very good, like this was me every
- 2:47Speaker 3: couple of lines. And so when we finally I finally
- 2:51Speaker 3: got to the end of the song our worship pasta
- 2:53Speaker 3: at the time, Jeff Bully turned around and he had
- 2:55Speaker 3: tears in his eyes. He's like, we're doing that this weekend.
- 2:59Speaker 3: I'm like, why, what, don't you want to fix it?
- 3:02Speaker 3: But he's like, no, we're doing it. And that was that.
- 3:05Speaker 3: It kind of left my mouth and left my life.
- 3:08Speaker 3: And this was before this is what I love. And
- 3:10Speaker 3: I keep telling people, don't worry about promotion or self promotion.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Like people that really caught on it, I said, but
- 3:19Speaker 3: I existed before there was all of the internet ability,
- 3:25Speaker 3: and God took a song and just breathed on it,
- 3:30Speaker 3: and before I knew it as getting letters from around
- 3:32Speaker 3: the world. I didn't even know how they would have
- 3:34Speaker 3: heard it. Like when God wants something out there, he
- 3:39Speaker 3: can do it so encouraging.
- 3:42Speaker 2: So you didn't realize what you had at the time.
- 3:45Speaker 2: What point did you realize this could go worldwide? I mean,
- 3:49Speaker 2: was it the first time you heard it maybe on
- 3:50Speaker 2: the radio, or the first time that somebody wrote you
- 3:53Speaker 2: from another country?
- 3:55Speaker 3: Yeah, probably a bit of all that. And to be honest,
- 3:59Speaker 3: I was like, what are they doing with this song?
- 4:01Speaker 3: How did they get this song? More than oh, this
- 4:03Speaker 3: is gonna blow up? You know? I just I kind
- 4:06Speaker 3: of don't really live in that space. So at the
- 4:10Speaker 3: they sang this song the first time over and offering, right,
- 4:15Speaker 3: and we were out of our church building that wee
- 4:17Speaker 3: can We were at a race course, right, we're going
- 4:20Speaker 3: to do horse races. We were rented the building, and
- 4:24Speaker 3: they sang it over the offering and by the end
- 4:26Speaker 3: of the offering, everybody was standing up with their hands
- 4:29Speaker 3: in the air. And I remember the minister who was
- 4:32Speaker 3: visiting that day. He was the one that said this
- 4:36Speaker 3: song is going to go around the world and quickly,
- 4:40Speaker 3: and I'm like what, So, you know, it was just
- 4:44Speaker 3: it was a real miracle of God, and it was
- 4:47Speaker 3: lumpy and there was no kind of you know, master plan,
- 4:52Speaker 3: and I really liked that because none of us can
- 4:56Speaker 3: take credit for it. It was really magnificent.
- 5:00Speaker 2: You're part of the early era of this modern worship movement.
- 5:04Speaker 2: What do you remember about that season and why do
- 5:06Speaker 2: you think this style of music took off?
- 5:10Speaker 4: What's happened in the past, you know, twenty five so
- 5:12Speaker 4: years to kind of help this music boom.
- 5:25Speaker 3: One of the beautiful things when I looked at all
- 5:27Speaker 3: these songs we're going through. These songs, they're all songs
- 5:32Speaker 3: for the local church, written by people within the local church.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Singable songs, you know, songs that give people the ability
- 5:41Speaker 3: to release the cry of their heart and maybe they
- 5:45Speaker 3: have been aching for that ability, and these we were
- 5:48Speaker 3: trying to gather songs from that era that have stood
- 5:51Speaker 3: the test of time, that give the average day to
- 5:57Speaker 3: day person an easy way to express the depths of
- 6:03Speaker 3: their hearts to God. And I think being a part
- 6:07Speaker 3: of that time, like in Australia, and we were a
- 6:10Speaker 3: long way from anybody, you know, there were real revival days.
- 6:15Speaker 3: When I look back now, and even though it was
- 6:17Speaker 3: it got crazy and busy and crazy, but we were
- 6:21Speaker 3: living in revival days and just seeing you know, with
- 6:26Speaker 3: lead worship and rather than polite flap and someone walks
- 6:31Speaker 3: up and preaches lead worship and someone would do an
- 6:34Speaker 3: old call and heaps of people would come and get saved.
- 6:39Speaker 3: And it was There's a line in one of the
- 6:42Speaker 3: early songs that Russell Frager wrote and he said, anything
- 6:46Speaker 3: can happen, and probably will. That's what it was like.
- 6:51Speaker 3: And yes there was some messiness later, but I wouldn't
- 6:58Speaker 3: be sitting here today with you without those days where
- 7:01Speaker 3: God really shaped us as a community of faith. He
- 7:07Speaker 3: shaped us as a community of worship, leaders of worship,
- 7:12Speaker 3: you know, musicians, production writers. We were being formed and
- 7:17Speaker 3: forged together in this real and it was a blessing
- 7:20Speaker 3: because no one knew who we were. It was fantastic
- 7:23Speaker 3: and it was just it was like God hit us
- 7:26Speaker 3: through a season while the roots went down deep. And
- 7:30Speaker 3: I'm so thankful for those days, like really, and then
- 7:35Speaker 3: we hear these new songs coming through, and seriously, I
- 7:39Speaker 3: am in awe of some of these songwriters now that
- 7:42Speaker 3: are picking up these new frequencies. But their job is
- 7:45Speaker 3: still the same, you know, when we're when we're creating
- 7:48Speaker 3: worship for the church, you know, we're not trying to
- 7:52Speaker 3: be clever. We're trying to release something out of people.
- 7:56Speaker 3: And so when I hear some of these songs now,
- 7:57Speaker 3: I'm like, sheesh, guys, go go get on our shoulders
- 8:02Speaker 3: and go as high and as wide as you can
- 8:05Speaker 3: because we're in these light revival days again, and the
- 8:11Speaker 3: new song has always coexisted with a fresh revival on
- 8:17Speaker 3: the earth. Wherever it was, it was always a new
- 8:19Speaker 3: song that accompanied, you know, historical revivals. And we're there again,
- 8:24Speaker 3: and it's oh, man, I could talk to you about
- 8:26Speaker 3: this for hours. It's so exciting.
- 8:28Speaker 2: It is it is. Let me ask you one on
- 8:30Speaker 2: a question, and I'm asking maybe one of the most
- 8:34Speaker 2: well known worship leaders in the world. What makes a
- 8:37Speaker 2: worship song? Is it the lyrics? Is it the heart?
- 8:40Speaker 2: Is it it's used in the church. How would you
- 8:43Speaker 2: define that or is it definable?
- 8:46Speaker 3: It's a really good question. Well, I would say, does
- 8:49Speaker 3: it reveal Christ? Does it exalt Jesus? I mean that's that's.
- 8:55Speaker 2: What you know.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Worship is worthship that songs will express every think, our feelings,
- 9:00Speaker 3: our emotions, a time, a memory, But actually worship reveals Christ.
- 9:07Speaker 3: That's the Holy Spirit's job is like. And when we
- 9:11Speaker 3: enter His gates with thanksgiving, we're not going in because
- 9:15Speaker 3: of how great we are. We're going in because of
- 9:18Speaker 3: how great He is. So, you know, if you look
- 9:20Speaker 3: at the lyric content of these songs, they're just and
- 9:26Speaker 3: Jesus be glorified. You know, we can get into the
- 9:30Speaker 3: semantics of what it is. But does it exalt Jesus?
- 9:34Speaker 3: Does it give you a pathway of expression to say,
- 9:41Speaker 3: in the safety of the presence of God, Jesus, I
- 9:46Speaker 3: love you, Jesus, I trust you, Jesus.
- 9:48Speaker 2: I thank you.
- 9:49Speaker 3: And I think you know, the more pathways we make
- 9:52Speaker 3: where people we just reveal the worth of God. Yeah,
- 9:56Speaker 3: I think we're on the brink of something so magnivous.
- 10:00Speaker 3: And the worship is timeless and eternal. That's the other thing.
- 10:03Speaker 3: We'll see some of these songs, you know, they just
- 10:07Speaker 3: they're like standards in our life because every time you
- 10:10Speaker 3: see them, they will do the same thing. They'll reveal Jesus.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Darlene check with the new movie The House of Worship.
