- 0:00SPEAKER_00: You the adventurer?
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, you.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Do you desire knowledge of immense worlds and arcane power?
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: A codex of untold stories and lore?
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Or perhaps simply easy listening for your daily commute?
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: And feast your eyes.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Or more accurately, yes, upon Dungeon Pedia.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Shit's about to get nerdy in here.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: And I'm Travis Peasley.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: I don't know what that weird on the end of the word.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: I don't know what that weird thing I did in there was.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: Like, I was just talking and then I did a weird little lilt.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: I promise I'm not trying to do anything new, guys.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: It's okay.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Uh this has not been a week for trying very many new things.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Uh well, actually, I say that.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: I I mean it's not new, but I've, you know, I've uh basically this whole week I have just been alternating between research and art about Dungeons and Dragons.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: So it's pretty much been a DD filled week for myself.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: I tried a new kind of puff pastry from the grocery store bakery.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: So I tried something new this week.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Well, congratulations.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: I have tried nothing new.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: I have just been exhausted all week from work.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: And occasionally playing video games.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Occasionally.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: It do be it do be that way.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: But I have also been been working.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm sorry, you guys.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: It's okay.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, if it makes you feel better, um, I have been working really hard on research.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: I put in overtime.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: You really did.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: Um what do you what do you mean by that?
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: So I did my research for the episode.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: And then I kept researching because I kept finding more and more cool stuff.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: And like the stuff I was researching, I really don't think it could be an episode, but honestly, I think it could be some bonus content.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: Oh, hmm.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: I I don't know for sure exactly what I'm gonna do with it, but it's I'm putting it out there.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm gonna do something with it.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Basically, it's just it it the format is not good for a full episode, but I'm gonna do something.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: That's dangerous to put that out there.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: It because people can hold me accountable.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like the the two of us heard that, and all of our listeners heard that.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: So that's dangerous.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: That's bold what you just did.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: That's why see, that's why I just don't promise things.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Well, see, the good thing is I already uh I are I already did most of the research.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, fucking fair.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: Well, what are we talking about?
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Um, well, because I mean I I kind of uh told you guys this last time, although that was about a month ago.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Last time I did the research.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Um, we're gonna continue on with fiends-ish.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: So uh for my own sanity, by the way, I'm I'm going to be using the term infernals from now on to mean anyone of well, infernal heritage.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Like, yes, it's fiends, but it's not fiends.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Fiends lowercase f and fiends uppercase f.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna use infernals for that.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: I didn't know you had any sanity left.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: So I don't know why that's a factor.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: That's fair.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: So we're we're continuing on down that road.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: Okay, so so where are we going on that road?
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Well, when we last left off, we had started down the highway to hell.
- 3:50unknown: Yes.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: God.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: Title of this episode.
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: Maybe.
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: Um maybe not.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: We'll we'll see.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: You'll you'll find out.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: You'll know.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: We covered the majority of devils, uh, the lawful occupants, lawful evil occupants of the nine hells of Bator, the Betazoo.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: So exactly where we left off was along the hierarchy of devils.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: We finished with the Gelugon, the ruthless, cold, literally icy commanders of Hell's Legions.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: I had mentioned that they the Gelugons were deeply jealous and desired the powers of their superiors, the Pitfiends.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: That's where we can.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: Okay, yo, I I remembered Pitfiends.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Uh the this this has been your devil refresher course.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: Previously on Dungeon Pedia.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: So Pitfiends were introduced in the very first monster manual in 1977, alongside a smaller collection of the Beta Zoo.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Um, on their first introduction, they were simply powerful devils who were as Modius' personal servants, but that definition quickly evolved.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Aside from obvious how higher ups, pitfiends are in essence the overlords of all devils.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: They are 12 feet tall, 800 pounds of muscle, their bodies have a natural armor and massive scales.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: They have this typical gargoyle-ish appearance.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, nice.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Jesus.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: These things are huge.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I did not imagine them being that big.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Massive bat wings, giant fangs, horns, preensile tails, and a typical red skin, which literally inflamed when angry or excited.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: So very classic devil.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: Classic devil.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Mixed with gargoyle.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: Um, so in that, in many ways, a pit fiend is exactly what you think of when you picture a devil.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: They share a lot of traits with a majority of the arch devils, both physical and mental.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: They're, without exception, incredibly intelligent, enigmatic, tyrannical masterminds who have an unwavering, inflated sense of superiority.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: Nice.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Some of that was taken directly from a monster manual, by the way.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Um as of 5th edition, they're officially established as the nobles of the devil hierarchy, forming the elite aristocracy of greater devils.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: So so they're like the the top tier of the devils, but then you also have arch devils.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: So it's kinda, yeah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, pretty much.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: Gotcha, gotcha.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, because they're all devils, but the arch devils are just special devils.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Well, and it's not and the the the pit fiends are there are are they just pit fiends?
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: It's not like a line of promotion.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: We're not part of the bait to zoo.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Well, no, they they are.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: They are.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: They're the final step in that line.
- 6:49SPEAKER_03: Okay, so you it is it is a promotion.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Okay, gotcha, gotcha.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Um, so and I could have probably put this in the last episode because that was mostly about the Peytazoo, but I feel like they are a better transition into the arch devils.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: So you're telling me if I work really hard and believe in myself, I could be a pipe in one day.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: Cool, gotcha.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Uh in fact, really, the way that the nine hells works is that if you work hard and are really fucking lucky, you could out uh legally it in the eyes of of the devils, oust Osmodius one day because they have this line of progression.
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: This system, yeah.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: And it's not technically illegal to overthrow Osmodius.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: He doesn't like it, but it's not technically illegal.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Well, it's kind of like the the Sahouagan in a way.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Like you can definitely challenge your superiors.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: So, like, even though they they kind of they value that structure, it's not it's it's not a thing to or it's not not a thing to challenge your superior or whatever.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: That's that's okay, that's interesting.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: But the Pitfians importance in hell showed even in where and how they traveled, they were rarely they were rarely in the upper levels of hell, as well as the colder ones, so this may have just been a personal preference.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: They didn't like the cold.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: Oh, so up upper levels are less bad.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: They're well, more accurately, they're less important.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: They're they're closer to the ruler.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: No, no.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Um, so the the higher the level, the closer the prime.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, so I thought you were saying the pit fiends are closer to the prime.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: Oh no, no, no.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: I meant the the higher the level, the closer the prime.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: Kind of like quote unquote real hell.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: Well So it's like at the at the top, not not in Dungeons and Dragons, but like higher would be like purgatory.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: In real hell, quote unquote real hell.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Um, so in the way that um the Nine Hells works, essentially, is there is one entrance in and it's Avernus.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: And all the other layers lead down to the deepest layer, which is the name?
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: Treachery.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: No, um, I didn't put it here because it's uh at the end of my notes.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Uh give me a sec.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: Um is Nessus, uh, which is the layer that as Modius rules.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: And the only way you can get through to it is through each individual layer.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: And there's only one entrance between each layer, correct?
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: Or there are multiple?
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: Actually, I don't know.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: I couldn't find that in my research.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: I know for a fact that there's only one entrance between between Avernus and the layer underneath it discs.
- 9:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because that's where that's where Tiamat hangs out.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: She guards that entrance.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: See, I knew that.
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: So maybe maybe that is the case.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: But there's not a shortcut to the very bottom of the nine house.
- 9:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:56SPEAKER_03: Is kind of the idea, gotcha.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: Pretty much.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: So they like they pretty much just stuck to the lower levels, avoiding the cooler, colder ones.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Fair.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: Just because they can and they're important, so they get to kind of dictate that.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they can just kind of live wherever they want.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: Uh they were in the greatest number in the lowest level of hell, Nessus.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Wherever they went, even outside of hell, hordes of lower devils followed to attend and listen to their orders.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: It's like, okay, I I I know what they said that they do, but I feel like I just imagine them as like groupies.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: Like they see this big, tall, strapping, like pit fiend, you know, come through their little podunk hell town, and they're just like, oh my god, oh my god.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: So in addition to all the terrifying muscle and fire and everything, they're also venomous.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: And in addition to all that, to scare the shit out of you, they also have a fear aura.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, the fear aura makes sense.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Well, specifically a magical one.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: The venomous part I didn't really suspect.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: How do they deliver this venom?
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: Through their fangs.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, oh, they have oh, they have fangs too.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, do they like long walks on the beach?
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: Or like, what kind of movies do they like?
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: Like Lewin's ready.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: I'm ready.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: Take me to hell.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: Drag me to hell.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: Well, take your adventure party and go find a pit fiend.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Luckily, pit fiends are often too self-absorbed in their own tasks to bother with the average adventurer.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Just don't piss them off.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Because if they have a personal vendetta, so they like won't even go, they don't even care.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, like, if you're in hell, they'll probably just send someone else after you.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: Because it's like you shouldn't be here.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: But I'm not gonna bother doing it because I'm not gonna do that.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: So the pit fiends are kind of all one class except for the dark eight, which are just basically eight special pit fiends at the top.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: Why aren't there nine?
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: There should be nine.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: Well, because it's like oh, it's so close.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Because Zasmodus is the ninth one.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: No.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Because they're uh below, so I don't know.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: That would that would have been that would have been it.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'm sorry.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: No, you're just I didn't think about that until just now.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: But above them in the hierarchy are of course the arch devils.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Even those are in their own hierarchy.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: It's hierarchies all the way down.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I yeah.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: So archdevils who are not the lord of a particular layer hold the title of Duke or Duchess, or otherwise generals or bureaucrats if the job is so inclined to a different title.
- 12:51SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Above them are, of course, the lords of each layer called the Lords of the Nine.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: So that there's your nine.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: And they're in turn ruled over by the indisputable but often plotted against King of the Nine Hells, Asmodeus.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Yes, the main man.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: Often plotted against, but never overthrown, it seems.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: The big guy.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Pretty much, yeah.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: He's uh he's got a lot going for him.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: DD campaign.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: You, your party starts out as like minor devils in the highest layer of hell, and you work together to overthrow Asmodius.
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: Oh god.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: That would actually be pretty cool.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: That would be kind of that would be a really cool one.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: And so then at the butt you know, then maybe at the end, it's the kind of dynamic of like, do you wanna like kill or sell out your friends or something like that, so that way you can have it all?
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's like, do you maybe wanna, you know, share something and you know, maybe change up the way hell is run or something?
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: You guys are gonna have a bit more inspiration on that uh oh no!
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: Oh no, and by no I mean yes.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: So, as is the nature of promotion and demotion in the Nine Hells, being a lord of a lair does not grant you promise that you will always be that rank.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: Earning Asmodeus a scorn or behaving unlawfully might earn you a demotion or worse, a punishment.
- 14:14unknown: Oh no.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: All arch devils are incredibly powerful on a plane of incredible power, and on some level are either deities in their own right, such as Osmodius or damn near.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Uh they can even do wish fulfillment uh along the lines of a wish spell.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: Usually this is sequestered only for deities, but any archdevil can do it.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: That's a lot.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: I would assume that you would have to appease them a whole lot for that to be a thing.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: Usually that just means offering over your soul.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's easy enough.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, yeah.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Who needs a soul?
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: True.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: So each archdevil has a pretty unique story, and many have multiple unique origins.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: I genuinely wish that I could devote a whole episode to each of these characters, even just to read exactly what's in the various sources.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: This is what I was talking about at the beginning of the episode.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: Oh, that sweet, sweet bonus content.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: It's just so good.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, I can't do that now.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: So I'm just gonna go over what I can layer by layer.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: So do the no, you're probably gonna answer this question as we go on.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: I'll hold it.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: I'll hold on to it.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Hold on to your questions until we Okay.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: Hold your questions, please.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: On the first level of Hell, Avernus, we have Zariel, the Lord of Avernus, and her general Belle, who actually used to be lord of it himself.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, and he's a real devil.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're all real devils.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: Well n okay.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: That that was okay.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: Well, Bell is one that I had heard of.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, oh, as in real life.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: Sailor, I hate to break it to you.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: DD is not real life.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Some of them are.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'm I'm sure that maybe all of them might have something somewhere, but Bell or or you know, Ball is a very prominent one that I've heard of.
- 16:04SPEAKER_03: I play like that.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: This one is actually spelled B-E-L.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: Um so Zariel was once an angel, a solar more specifically, one of few arch devils who are are actually referred to as former angels in every single origin story.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, nice.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Zariel was an angel who was assigned to watching the Blood War by the Celestials, who, regardless of origins, were very interested in making sure the devils and demons fought each other forever.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: Um That's so that's so underhanded.
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, like, I get it, but you know, it's still just it it and it doesn't fit the squeaky clean thing.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: Which I mean, like, I like that.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: I think that's that's interesting.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: But the idea is just kind of it it's kind of it is very interesting because it kind of I would say that there are multiple iterations of that.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: It's not just like, oh, it's really funny when the squeaky clean guy gets his uh hands dirty.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: It's also, I think, really interesting when a an otherwise horrible person has moments of compassion and genuine genuine kindness.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: Defo.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: It makes things more complex.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Um, so Zariel was corrupted by the plan of Beethur, as well as a growing obsession with war corrupting her as well.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: She was frustrated that the powers that be on Celestia refused to battle, despite her certainty that the host of Celestia could wipe out both sides if they only would do it.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: She repeatedly asked to join the battle, denied each time, and so she decided to take up a mob of mortal followers and made her own attack.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Oh, sweet.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: She cut through legions of devils and demons before she was overwhelmed by sheer numbers.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: After the battle, Asmodeus allowed her to recover, having found her unconscious atop a mountain of her dead foes.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: After she recovered, Asma Asmodeus made her Lord of Avernus and his champion, leading the armies and guarding the only entrance to the rest of the Nine House.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Dang.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: Like, I know that it's like the highest level, which I feel like, you know, in in like you said, it kind of translates to importance.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: But I feel like that's very interesting that that was like kind of someone's entry.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: Entry, like someone's starting point in their, you know, like hellish career is like, hey, you're a fallen angel.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: Why don't you guard the entrance to my entire realm?
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, she wiped out legions of demons and devils.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: And pretty much just like passed out from exhaustion at that point.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: On top of a mountain of her enemies.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: So I can see why he decided to choose her to Yeah, that's a very impressive resume.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: But also And at this point, like I there's some beautiful art behind it.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Um at this point, she's kind of been physically corrupted in the manner that um that origin story from last time depicted uh Esmodius being transformed.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, gotcha.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: So she kind of bears the that that look of like evil angel.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: And it's a whole lot easier to it's a whole lot easier to convince a lawful good person to come to the side of lawful evil than it is to like go to the diagonals.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: Than to than to sway them to the chaotic evil.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: And she's certainly not allowed back in Celestia.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: I mean Yeah, no, not after she like kind of went and did their job for them.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: So there's a whole bunch more and a lot of story with her general her and her general Belle, but suffice to say, there's a lot of bad blood and betrayal.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: Well, so was Belle the the Lord of Avernus at that point?
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: Yes and no.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: It it's a whole thing.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: Because I can imagine Asmodeus just like seeing this, this, this person and being like, yeah, you can you can you know run this one layer, and then Belle's just like on the other like end of the table, like, uh Excuse me, that's mine.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Hello?
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: I'm right here.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: So um at one point Asmodeus m had made Tiamat the actual lord of Avernus, but she didn't do a very good job.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: So she was reduced to guarding the gate to death.
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: She uh she was she's she just spent too much time rubbing.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just reveling in hedonism to actually do anything.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: Why do why why is Tiamat lawful evil?
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: Anyway, I'm sorry.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: Go moving on.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: Why is Tmot?
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: The lawful evil god of chaos.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Anyways, I'm not gonna get you off because if we do, we're not gonna have time.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this this is not the this is not the episode for that.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: So Dis was ruled over by Dis Vader.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: Uh he was an archdevil of extreme paranoia, reclusive to his iron tower, and employing spies and informants and overseeing production of weapons for the devil hordes.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: Mood.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: He also deals in trading for souls and secrets.
- 21:11SPEAKER_03: Ooh, that's interesting.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: Very.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it's uh well every time I I hear secrets in that kind of context, I'm just like, oh, Vecna.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Um, other uh notable arch devils of diss include Despader's consort and spy master, Lilith, their daughter, Malak I practice this word Malaclabra, Malaklabra, and Despader's most trusted advisor, Titivlus.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Which again, not gonna get into it too much, but there's this really interesting theory in Mordecindan's Toma Foes that he is actually De Spader's either second form or that Titivus has already disposed of DeSpader and uh is impersonating him.
- 21:59SPEAKER_03: Oh, like uh Like a sh like a shadow broker situation.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: Well, precisely like that.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: Sorry, spoilers from Asspect 2 DLC.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, not really.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: All I really said is that it exists, but so um the next level is Minoris.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: And the lord of Minoris is Mammon, the patron of greed.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: That name also sounds familiar.
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: I think that's another one.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: Devil.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: Whatever.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: He okay, so he was literally and figuratively a two-faced, utterly selfish being.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: Mood.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Literally everything has a price to him.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: And despite being the richest entity in all of the plains, he spends very little of it on maintaining his own domain.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: So much so that the sinking city, what the area is called, is constantly on the edge of collapse.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: No.
- 22:49SPEAKER_03: The richest being in all the plains?
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: Yes, legitimately.
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: Like that that they said that that's crazy.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: It said perhaps, but you know what they mean.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, like, yeah, he has a lot of money.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: Also, that doesn't remind me of anything in real life at all.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: No.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: So, quick fun thing about the sinking city.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: It has a soul marketplace for devils and fiends to trade souls.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: No.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: No.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it functions just like a regular marketplace.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: There are other types of stalls and stuff, but it's a soul marketplace.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: I would be pissed if I sold my soul to one demon, and then like whenever I finally died, it's like, nope, you're owned by this one now.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Like, what the fuck?
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: Like, hi, he sold you to this street vendor for one corn chip.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: Congrats.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: That's how much you're worth to him.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: So now, so now you live in this shitty like shanty in like a jar.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: That's what that's all I can imagine they do with the souls is just like put them in jars.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I nothing to dispute that.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: What do you do with a soul?
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: You turn it into whatever you want.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: More on that later.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: Consume them to get power.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: Also that.
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, that's true.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: I guess you could do that too.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: So all of the previous arch devils had their that traditional humanoid with bat wings, cloven hooves, and horns kind of thing.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, but Mammon resembles a half serpent, like a Yonti.
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Uh with yellowed skin and bony spines, thin horns on his bald head, and a forked tongue.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: Wait, doesn't he have two faces?
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: Two faces, one head.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: Oh, duh.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay, okay.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: For some reason, I was imagining like a two-headed like that one guy from Star Wars.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, that would be cool too.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Or like he uh he also has two forms because he had an original form, but that's no different than everyone else.
- 24:38SPEAKER_03: And I mean, I feel like they're they're arch devils.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: They can look however they want.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Again, yes and no.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: That'll be discussed later.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: There's a lot in this episode.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Damn it.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: So uh the most notable arch devil on Minoros, other than uh Mammon, is Bale.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: B-A-E-L, who is Mammon's gr great general of noted acclaim that he utterly relies on.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Because Mammon won't lift a fucking finger to do anything other than obtain more riches.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Dang.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: So he makes Bale do everything else, including guard his riches.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: So Bale probably likes conjecture.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: Bale probably fucking hates him.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Bale isn't an as ambitious as a lot of other devils are.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: He is perfectly content to rule over his armies.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: Good for him.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: I'm glad he found the place where he was happy, and then he's like, Yeah, you know what, I'm just gonna stay here.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: Good for him.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: I'm glad that somebody found fulfillment in their work in the Nine Hells.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: And they're not constantly trying to step on somebody else to or, you know, like in the like with the Sahuagan, fucking eat somebody else to hit the biggest.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: So good for him.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Good for Bale.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: The next layer is Phlegathos, and it's officially ruled by the archdevil Fierna.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: Officially.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: Officially.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: She rules in a sort of tandem with her father, Belial.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, Belial, that's another real devil.
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: Real, quote unquote.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Sorry, I just I hear something that I know anything about and I get excited.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, I'm I'm really glad that you're actually pointing this out because I forgot to go through and point out which ones that I knew came from uh the the like real the world.
- 26:21SPEAKER_03: Belial was the Lord of lies?
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: I think he he he just he was the one who destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, right?
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: He had something I think he I want to say he had something to do with Sodom and Gomorrah, but I mostly just know these things because I play a lot of Shimagami Tensa.
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: Gotta be honest.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: So Fierna and Belial are partners, rivals, and a kind of paradox in hell, which is built upon this hierarchies and no share of power.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: Fierna is unbelievably charismatic on top of being, you know, a sexy archdevil lady.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: And she was brilliant at manipulating hearts and minds.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Belial, on the other hand, is a hardworking genius who is constantly doing the ins and outs of stuff.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: They seem to hate and admire each other, but they also rely on and want to get rid of each other.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: So it's this constant ebb and flow of control for them.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: But it works.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: They get everything done.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: So a father and a daughter having a complicated and somewhat unhealthy relationship.
- 27:27SPEAKER_03: Groundbreaking.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: I'm sure.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: I'm over here.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Like, this is such an interesting thing.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: I can't wait to talk about this.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: No, I mean it it it is interesting.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: I was jokes.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: No, you're I was I was jokes.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: So the fifth layer, I see Stigia, is ruled by Levisus.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: Levistus is one of those stories that genuinely I want to tell you all of it.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: But unfortunately, due to the time restraints, I can't.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: So for a quick rundown, he was an am he was ambitious to the point of refusing to play by the rules.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: Basically, social suicide in devil society.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because lawful.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: It it is one of those things where if he's like on the scale of law and chaos, he's like in law, but he's approaching chaos.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: So he ousted the previous lord, which is fine.
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: And the two but the two fought and the two fought each other constantly for control.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: But that wasn't enough.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: Levis just wanted more.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: In an attempt to overthrow Asmodeus, he also killed the king's consort.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: Ooh, uh-oh, spaghettios.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: Asmodeus doesn't take kindly to being overthrown.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: He likes his consorts for various reasons, but he especially does not like it when you violate the law.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: God.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Was that a violation of the law?
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: That was a violation of the law.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: That's like the whole like Morticia Adams monologue where it's like, you killed my consort, you tried to overthrow me.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: All that I could forgive, but breaking the law?
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: Oh god, Asmodeus is a fucking loser.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: For breaking the law, he was made into an example.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: Asmodeus imprisoned him in an unbreakable iceberg where he could still issue commands from, but he couldn't scheme or attain freedom.
- 29:21SPEAKER_03: Oh god! He's in charge, but he's going nowhere.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, so he's kind of like it's not even like a figurehead, but it's like a oh fuck, that's good.
- 29:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: He's just a talking iceberg.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: He was literally locked into his position forever.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: Figuratively and literally.
- 29:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:38SPEAKER_03: Also, Stigia is where the Sahuagangod lives.
- 29:41unknown: Nice.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: I suppose unless someone does actually overthrow Asmodee, then they could probably summon the power enough to unlock him.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Another notable archdevil in this layer is Garion, who had previously fought Levis for control of Stigia.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: He was the previous lord.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: Oh he can't exactly do that now that Levistus is protected by impenetrable ice.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: So he follows Levistus' orders and seeks to oust him.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: And to do that, he has to get him out first.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: He's just like standing on the outside of the iceberg and he just like puts up a middle finger.
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: Probably.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: All I can think of is the various scenes from Supernatural where they're trying to actually figure out how to get the devil out of the cage in hell.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: And just like walking around it or pacing around trying to figure out what to do.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: I have seen one episode of Supernatural.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: And it wasn't that one?
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: No, it was not that one.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: Um, real quick, Garyon has this cool, for the most part, they all have the a humanoid thing.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, Garyon, sorry.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: Garion has this cool lower body of a serpent, but at the end of the tail is like a scorpion stinger.
- 30:50SPEAKER_03: Ooh.
- 30:51SPEAKER_03: Nice.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: Interesting.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: He he does look really cool.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: Um so the next layer is Malb Malbulg.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Um I I almost was like Malbolger, but it I'm pretty sure it's pronounced Malbog.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: Malbolger.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: And it's ruled by none other than the princess of the nine hells, as Modius' daughter, Glacia.
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: Ooh.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: She has a long history of rebellious activities, especially when it came to her father.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: I was gonna ask why she was so high up, but I mean that probably explains it.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: I mean her her daddy owns the company.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: That's why she's so high up.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: Like, you know?
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Or did you mean high in the bad sense?
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: High in the bad sense, like it's because, yeah, you you figured it out.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: It's because she's a rebellious She's not of like the lower like levels.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Where are we?
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: We're firmly in the middle.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay, okay.
- 31:45SPEAKER_03: For some reason I thought we were we were deeper than we were.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: Nope.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: So it's the kind of thing where like she has a job because daddy owns the company, but she's not too high up because daddy owns the company.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: It's even more interesting than that, too.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: Oh shit.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: Um, so she bends laws, but she doesn't break them.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: She delights in shocking others and is basically as chaotic as you can get without actually being chaotic.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: Oh man, that's fun.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: Before she was Lord of Malbul, uh, she ruled Hell's first organized crime syndicate.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: Beautiful.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: She used her followers to purchase souls on her behalf using gold that she had transmuted from lead.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: When the spell ended, the unwitting soul merchants were left with useless coins.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Technically, it was a loophole in the way that the law had been written.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: And Asmodeus couldn't punish her for breaking the law because it wasn't broken.
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: Asmodeus was like, damn it.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: I knew I shouldn't have paid her to pay her way into law school.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: Damn it.
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: Literally.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: Um But basically the law stated that it was that the currency is given its value when it's minted, and that value is established then.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter if it's made from something that's transmuted.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: But then when it transmuted back, this is useless.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: No one's going to accept this.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: It's no longer minted at the value that it was because it's not gold.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: Gold.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: I kinda I kinda love her.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: A little bit.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: Um, so he couldn't punish her.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: But he decided I'm gonna promote you to Lord of the Realm, tying her to a single layer of hell and giving her responsibilities to keep her busy.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, can they not leave their layers?
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: They can, but to do so would basically be abandoning your post.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: Which I'm going to assume is against the law.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 33:47SPEAKER_03: Um and also, like you said, responsibilities.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: So on Malvolg, the prison layer, Glacier is both warden and prisoner.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's oh that's good.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: Themes.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: Themes.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: Themes.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: So the next layer down is um Malodomini.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: I said it right.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: I practiced it.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: I said it right.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: Good job.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: Wait, who do they put in prison in hell?
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, people who break the law.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: Duh.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: Laws.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: Moving on.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: And uh Malodomine is ruled by Belzibal.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, Lord of the Flies.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Uh he was called Lord of Lies first, and for good reason.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Belzebal once ruled over Mount Malodomine as well as Malbolg.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: Ooh.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, in an attempt to overthrow Asmodeus, notice how all of these say attempt, uh, and paint him as incompetent, he altered documents, breaking the law.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Asmodeus stripped Malbog from his rule and cursed him so that every time he lied to a devil, he would turn into a slug for a year.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: Including retroactively.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: Is he just a slug?
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: It would take millennia to work that off.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: He literally just looks like a slug.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: Is he at least like a big slug?
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, I mean it's a big slug.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: He's like but he's just a slug.
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: As far as slugs go, he's an impressive specimen.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: But a massive slug that attracts flies.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: For this, people took the name Lord of Lies and made the nickname Lord of the Flies.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, oh, uh, uh, uh, Chef's kissing.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: Now you guys can see why I was so excited for all of this.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: No, so would you say that that encounter might have left him a little salty?
- 35:33SPEAKER_03: Looks into the camera like I'm on the office.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, it did.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: See, at that point, that's just rubbing salt in the wound.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: That would have been a better joke.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: This is actually rubbing salt in the wound.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, he's also unable to strike deals without consequences for the other side.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is one of the punishments that Asmodeus gave him.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: So, because Asmodeus did this and also told everyone about it, no devil devil will bargain with him.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: Ah man.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: So the next layer below is the freezing cold layer of Canea.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: Or Cania.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: Canada.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: Canada.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: Uh Canada is hell.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: This just in.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, I just said that because it's cold.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: Uh Cania, um, who is and the ruler of Cania is Mephistopheles, the Lord of No Mercy.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: He was once a court magus in service of Asmodeus and sees rule of Cania from Rimen, who has almost no information about him because he was in charge for such a short amount of time.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: I he was just there to be ousted.
- 36:39SPEAKER_03: Pretty much.
- 36:40SPEAKER_03: Like they just created him to have someone oust him.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: Uh Mephistopheles will not did not ever take visitors, and is the final protection between Asmodeus and the rest of the planes.
- 36:51SPEAKER_04: Ooh.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: He allows nothing to distract him and devotes himself almost fully to his research, killing minions without a thought for simply suspecting them of annoying him.
- 37:03SPEAKER_03: Suspecting them of annoying them.
- 37:05SPEAKER_03: Of annoying him.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, I've been pre-annoyed before, but I've never killed someone over being pre-annoyed.
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is kind of where the Lord of No Mercy comes from.
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: Uh so he his research is in new spells, magical items, that sort of thing.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: Uh he's obsessed with magical advancement.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: Fair.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: He's also reliant on his servant, Huda Jin, uh, to take all important information for him so that he would not be interrupted, and also sometimes to kill because he's so focused on something and someone dared to bother him.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: He he can't even tear himself away for the second that it would take to just eldridge blast somebody into oblivion.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: So like him killing these random minions just for annoying him isn't against the law.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: I had that thought.
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: Isn't it?
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: No, because they're below him.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: Um, I would say that a consort for the king is probably equal to a lord of a lower of a higher lair.
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: Okay, alright, fair.
- 38:02SPEAKER_03: So it's like uh it's like how it was a whole thing in like Hammurabi's code that it was like it was different for like a noble person to kill someone of lower stature than it was for or maybe the the idea is that Hammurabi's code didn't have that precedent that was there before.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: But I know that there's been plenty of of social contracts that are to do basically with like if you took out the eye of like a a you know, a slave or something like that, you only had to like pay for it instead of like Yeah, it it's kind of like that.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: Basically, the people below you are completely uh indispensable, but the people above you, you better have a damn good reason for doing anything.
- 38:42SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 38:43SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: I excuse murder, but I draw the line at forging documents is how Ismodius feels about that.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: Um so uh Mephistopheles is also known to have at least one son with a mortal woman.
- 38:58SPEAKER_03: At least.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: Who was referred to b interestingly enough as both a tiefling and a cambian.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's like Asteric, a little bit.
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: Like I think Asteric is formally a k I I don't know.
- 39:11SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 39:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:12SPEAKER_03: Basically they're just Also, that's the only that that distracted him from his research, but not anything else.
- 39:19SPEAKER_03: Listen, it's like he What tore him away from his research long enough to flip?
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: She was really hot.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, listen, I get it.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: Or maybe it was for magical advancement.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: Maybe so.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: He did sacrifice the son, so it probably was.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay, yeah.
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: The okay, probably, yeah.
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: So uh Can you imagine being that woman in the probably good.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: Anyway, moving on.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: So we're about to get to the final layer of hell.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: But first, we're gonna take it.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: No! Sorry.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: Damn it.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: Damn it.
- 39:52SPEAKER_03: This is my personal hell, this break.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: Hey everybody, thank you so much for listening to our second devil's episode.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's a lot.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: It's a lot, yeah.

- 40:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we still need to harass her enough to do that.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, by the time this airs, we might have harassed her enough, but like still harassing.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: Still harassing.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: This is one of those times that it's okay.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: Um, and that's at MetallicDiceGames.com, offer code Dungeonpedia.

- 41:11SPEAKER_01: This reminds me that I need to go post the devil's um uh research notes in there.
- 41:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:17SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, if you want to consider contributing to our Patreon, we would really appreciate it.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: Uh, we are still working on posting our actual play podcast, Projectile Dysfunction.

- 42:29SPEAKER_02: And also spreading the word, telling everyone that might be interested would be very helpful as well.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: We would really appreciate it.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: Or even if they're not interested.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, that's the best way I annoy my friends.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: Just be that person.
- 42:41SPEAKER_03: Also, thank you to Alexander Nakarata for the use of our theme song Blacksmith.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: And uh with that, let's get back to this delightfully devilish episode.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: Nice.
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: Thanks.
- 42:55SPEAKER_03: Alright, the the ne not Nexus.
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: Nessus?
- 43:00SPEAKER_03: Nessus, Nessus is what it was called.
- 43:02SPEAKER_03: I was like, it was something like Nexus.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: On the final lair of hell, Nessus, Asmodeus rules.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: As he rules everything, though, but he's also mostly in charge there.
- 43:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, is the the influence is the strongest there.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: So Asmodeus is really complex and v very interesting.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: Before I started on this infernal research, I had so little interest in him.
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: That was changed drastically.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: He's his own episode in its own right, and honestly, props to all the writers who have made this guy intriguing to him.
- 43:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I feel like Asmodeus could maybe even be a multi, like you would want to do more than one part, I would imagine.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: Um, so I covered a lot in the last episode, but getting right down to it, Asmodeus wants to rule the cosmos.
- 43:50SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: He genuinely believes that the universe would be better if he was in charge.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: Of course he does.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: Because he would rule it within an iron.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Lawful fist and he is opposed to the the chaos, the entropy.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: Everything else.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: Pretty much.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, and the thing is, is if you take Pact Primeval into account, he is an evil man, yes, but he is not inherently opposed to good.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: He just thinks that it in and of itself on it on its own with no evil is dumb as shit and uh I mean fair and gets you nowhere.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, yeah, I I I get and that's the worst part about people like that, is because like he legitimately believes that.
- 44:41SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 44:41SPEAKER_03: Like he believes that that you know the universe would be better under his control, guided entirely by his principles.
- 44:49SPEAKER_03: Like it's not even just like a a cover that that he has because he wants to fuck shit up, which is how it is for some people.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: Like he legitimately believes that.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: And I say the worst thing.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: I find that really interesting, but it's also like it sucks because you can ever sit convince these people to see the error other ways.
- 45:06SPEAKER_01: Precisely.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: Um, and that that's just it.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: Is like in part it is genuinely like he is that committed and stuff, but there's also a lot of narcissism that kind of comes into play.
- 45:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 45:19SPEAKER_03: It's the whole thing, like, you know.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: He believes that he's the only person with enough charisma, strength, and insight to usher in this ideal future where law reigns supreme.
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: Which I mean, if we look at almost anything that DD shows us, it's that all of the extremes are bad.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, precisely.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: Well, when you go far enough to the extreme, rather.
- 45:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 45:44SPEAKER_03: Because I mean, like earlier we talked about, and you know, you said that there were also kind of um variations of how this was being told.
- 45:51SPEAKER_03: But, you know, you had the archons who were just kind of sitting on their hands.
- 45:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, and and Zaryel was like, hey, let's go take care of this, and they were like, no, let's just let it happen.
- 46:02SPEAKER_03: So, you know, they're they're sitting on their hands, which you know, you could maybe interpret it as being because of the red tape that is seems to be a theme for how the archons do things.
- 46:12SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 46:13SPEAKER_03: No, you're good.
- 46:14SPEAKER_03: Extremes are bad.
- 46:14SPEAKER_01: Extremes are bad.
- 46:15SPEAKER_03: And also, here we have Asmodius, who's a piece of shit.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I mean, in his mind, Asmodeus has been chosen by the universe to protect it from annihilation.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: Um, funny enough, do you know what the um what Asmodeus is the god of?
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: I do not.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: He's the god the Pherunian deity of indulgence.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: What?
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 46:40SPEAKER_01: What?
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, as of the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, and he is the Pherunian deity of indulgence.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: How?
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: What is what what does uh Esmodius indulge in?
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: Himself.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: He is obsessed with himself.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: Waka waka.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I like I I was against it when I first read it, but I mean it it's his own thing, so no, and like I I I actually had that thought before you specifically like posited the question, what does he indulge in?
- 47:15SPEAKER_03: I was like, he indulges in his own like self-importance.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: He like this is taken directly from Mordecinen's Toma Foes.
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: He's perfectly capable, and if it he were any less capable, his arrogance would have been led to his undoing long ago.
- 47:30SPEAKER_01: This just perpetuates it in his head that like he thinks that he is the chosen of the universe.
- 47:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:40SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: That is basically the the thing that I wanted to get across about Asmodeus.
- 47:48SPEAKER_01: Um is for as evil as he is and as twisted as he is, at his core, he is someone who has a lot of arrogance and a lot of beliefs about how things should be done.
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:59SPEAKER_03: I mean he's he's principal, I'll give him that.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: Um, I will say um I don't like something that was included about Asmodeus' like development, but I'm going to describe it anyways.
- 48:16SPEAKER_01: Um I don't recall if it was mentioned at any point before fifth edition, but in Mordechinan's Tome of Foes, one of a few potential origins has um Asmodeus against the angels of Celestia, and he goes to court with them.
- 48:34unknown: Oh god.
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: Like in the last one, but the person who's in charge there is Primus, the leader of the Modrins, because he can be impartial.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: Alright.
- 48:45SPEAKER_03: Makes sense.
- 48:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: Um Primus basically says the angels are are wrong.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: You're not violating the law.
- 48:54SPEAKER_01: But he did punish, or he didn't punish Asmodeus for his evil ways, but he did order Asmodeus to forever carry an artifact called the Ruby Rod that would guarantee his adherence to law.
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: Asmodeus' Ruby R.
- 49:11SPEAKER_03: Okay, sorry.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: But I I don't like that because I like the idea of Asmodeus being this principled guy who's also evil.
- 49:21SPEAKER_03: I really don't.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: I've just like on his own will, he's lawful.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because I mean that that to me is is more like not only comp compelling in general, like on a character level, but I feel like it makes more sense to me that the ruler of like the lawful evil plane, it like is that way at their core.
- 49:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah not that they are being made to be that way in some kind of way.
- 49:51SPEAKER_03: Also, can I just say, as Modius, in the court of the angels, being presided over by the leader of the Modrons, that is my personal hell.
- 50:03SPEAKER_03: That like that's all the lawful people all together arguing.
- 50:09SPEAKER_03: That's my personal hell.
- 50:11SPEAKER_03: Like, that is what hell will be for me when I die.
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: So, um because I'm going there probably.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: But that's all I want to talk about about Asmodeus in this episode.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: Okay, because again, it's not just about Asmodeus.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: Because again, I mean, and like you said, Asmodeus could be his own episode.
- 50:28SPEAKER_03: But yeah.
- 50:29SPEAKER_03: That Ruby rod's stupid, in my opinion.
- 50:32SPEAKER_01: Um he the reason why he is so important to understand is that he basically started the whole rest of the everything and established the hierarchy and everything.
- 50:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, in several of his origins, uh, it basically says that he started it from nothing.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: Um and as I mentioned before, the Beta Zoo specifically are deeply entrenched in that hierarchy.
- 50:59SPEAKER_01: I want to talk a little bit about some of the alternative processes of promotion because uh only once are uh devils chosen by chance, which is when they start.
- 51:13SPEAKER_01: After that, it's all broken down and seeing what they can what they can handle.
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 51:20SPEAKER_01: Gotcha.
- 51:20SPEAKER_01: So the promotion varies a lot.
- 51:24SPEAKER_01: Um Beitazoo are some Betazoo are thrown into a pit of flames and um their impurities are burned away for 1,001 days.
- 51:35SPEAKER_01: And classic.
- 51:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 51:38SPEAKER_03: Classic purification by fire.
- 51:40SPEAKER_03: Love it.
- 51:40SPEAKER_01: And this is only done to Gelugons and Arane because they are the only ones who can survive that.
- 51:49SPEAKER_03: Stru struggles to remember which ones those were.
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: Uh the the really sexy ones are the Aranye and the Gelagons are the cold.
- 51:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:58SPEAKER_03: I I do remember those because you mentioned them at the top of this episode.
- 52:01SPEAKER_01: Uh that's how you can get pit fiends.
- 52:04SPEAKER_01: The other way to get a pit fiend is directly from Asmodeus' blood.
- 52:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, what?
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: You can just create them.
- 52:10SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's that's no that's That sounds like the easier way to go.
- 52:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, if Asmodeus wants it, but yeah.
- 52:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, I feel like there there also is maybe something to the to the effect of like, you know, having having someone who maybe had that experience in in in life, life.
- 52:32SPEAKER_03: But you know, besides just like Asmodeus is like, oh, I want to make a new pit fiend, let me just prick my finger, and then all of a sudden just sprouts fully formed from the drop of his blood kind of thing.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: Pretty much, yeah.
- 52:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 52:46SPEAKER_01: Um, so um, just a couple of others, real quick, just to talk about their society, basically.
- 52:54SPEAKER_01: So um a spinagon is that really cool bat one from last time.
- 52:58SPEAKER_03: I do remember those.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: Um, and if you're chosen to become a spinagon, you have to fight in a gladiator gladiatorial combat with others.
- 53:07SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 53:08SPEAKER_01: And the winner is then carted off and the skin peeled off its body.
- 53:11SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: And then it reveals a spinogon that has formed inside the wax-like shell.
- 53:18SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:19SPEAKER_02: Your skin is just a wax-like shell.
- 53:22SPEAKER_01: That's a point, yeah.
- 53:24SPEAKER_03: That holds a spinagon within.
- 53:26SPEAKER_02: Hmm.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: Um Abishai.
- 53:30SPEAKER_03: There's a Spinagon inside all of us.
- 53:32SPEAKER_01: And uh Abbechai that are selected to become Airnier, uh therefore taken from Tiamat, uh, must submit to um the Knoll of Blades who rearrange the features of the feed to make it into um basically another thing by uh yeah, cool sword.
- 53:55SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 53:56SPEAKER_03: Uh um just a little uh cool, all right, gotcha.
- 54:00SPEAKER_03: Also, the Abishai were the really cool, essentially devil dragons, right?
- 54:04SPEAKER_03: Okay, cool.
- 54:05SPEAKER_03: Because like I like I know the whole promotion thing, but like and the the whole ambition.
- 54:10SPEAKER_03: But like if I were an Abbeyshai, I'd be like, I'm good.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: That's actually what most Abishai are like, but the problem is you can't really turn down a promotion.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 54:19SPEAKER_03: But yeah, like uh just for the record, if I was an Abbeyshai, I would be like, I'm good.
- 54:23SPEAKER_03: I'm a devil dragon, I'm good.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: Um, there are other stories of being thrown into the river sticks and seeing if you manage to come out.
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: Stuff like that.
- 54:38SPEAKER_03: Um It's like the whole, would like, were they a witch?
- 54:42SPEAKER_03: So you throw them, except this time they're like sad when you don't come back up.
- 54:46SPEAKER_03: They're like, oh, she wasn't a witch.
- 54:47SPEAKER_03: Damn.
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: So each Beta Zoo step has a lesson attached to it.
- 54:55SPEAKER_03: Ooh.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: Um, so let me read those off real quick.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: And this comes from Planescape.
- 55:02SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's I love I love lessons.
- 55:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: I love when there's a neat little bow you can put.
- 55:09SPEAKER_03: Uh there's a neat little lesson in the uh episode of the children's show to tie it all together.
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: Well, I say each.
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: Um each of the ones that you actually have to try for.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: The first couple don't really have a lesson because you're just there.
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: Um so the lesson of the Spinagon is to best succeed early and avoid the trouble of dealing with the in-betweens.
- 55:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 55:34SPEAKER_01: The lesson of the Abishai, that through determination and clever thinking, even early mistakes can be overcome.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: That's that's nice.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: That's just good life advice.
- 55:45SPEAKER_01: The twin lessons of the Barbazoo, savage determination drives one quite efficiently, and it takes more skill than luck to survive.
- 55:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, the lesson of the cockan, take pains to induce in others respect for a being of obvious skill.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: The lesson of the Arane, cunning and creative thinking earn great rewards.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: The lesson of the Osoloth, learn to love and uphold the law.
- 56:11SPEAKER_01: Boo.
- 56:13SPEAKER_03: Like I was I was pretty with it, but that one's boring.
- 56:16SPEAKER_01: The lesson of the Hamatula, loyalty and service earn many privileges.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: The lesson of the cornogon, command is another form of service, and service leads to greater command.
- 56:28SPEAKER_04: Ooh.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: The lesson of the Amnizu, no matter how high you rise, there's always someone or something higher.
- 56:34SPEAKER_01: The lesson of the Gelagon, a thing coveted is worth the wait.
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: The lesson of the pit fiend is power clarifies, and absolute power clarifies absolutely.
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: And that's it.
- 56:45SPEAKER_03: Pieces a lot, there's only passion.
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: Um, it basically boils down into how to be a devil.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: Um, and that's pretty much their society.
- 56:56SPEAKER_03: That that some of those were very uh evocative.
- 57:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 57:01SPEAKER_03: I really liked the one about command as is a type of service.
- 57:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 57:06SPEAKER_03: Because it's like, yeah.
- 57:08SPEAKER_03: It it do be that way.
- 57:10SPEAKER_01: It do be that way.
- 57:11SPEAKER_03: It do be that way so much.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: Um so other non-beitzisu, real quick.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: Um those got me.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: I don't know why those got me.
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: I'm glad.
- 57:21SPEAKER_03: I was hoping like I for that kind of uh I kind of got chills a little bit.
- 57:25SPEAKER_03: Like I'm not a lawful evil person, but I kind of got chills a little bit.
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: Like some of those I was like, man.
- 57:30SPEAKER_03: Makes you think.
- 57:31SPEAKER_03: Man, someone would tattoo that on their body.
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: Fuck.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: So uh the non-Baitizo devils typically come from like souls that are sold to various people.
- 57:44SPEAKER_01: Um, and it includes imps who were basically devilish familiars.
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's cute.
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: Hellcats who served as kind of a work animal and hunters, and chain devils, who were torturers correct who were created specifically from expired soul contracts.
- 58:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, wow.
- 58:04SPEAKER_02: That's interesting.
- 58:05SPEAKER_02: How does a soul contract expire?
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: Well, basically, you get to the point where you have to pay up your soul now.
- 58:13SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 58:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 58:14SPEAKER_02: Okay, I was like, how does it expire?
- 58:17SPEAKER_02: Because someone's gonna die eventually.
- 58:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:21SPEAKER_01: And this basically just define it it basically tells you all about a little bit about how the society is run.
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: Because I didn't have time to go into all the ins and outs.
- 58:32SPEAKER_01: Like for hobbies it lists sex because that they don't reproduce sexually, but they like it.
- 58:39SPEAKER_03: Oh, wait, does it actually?
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, cool.
- 58:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: Alright.
- 58:43SPEAKER_01: And we already know well enough about their hierarchy and the fact that their economy is based primarily in souls and gold.
- 58:52SPEAKER_03: That's hilarious.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: Like that like you're you're devils.
- 58:57SPEAKER_03: Why do you care about gold?
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: It pretty.
- 59:01SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 59:02SPEAKER_03: Good point.
- 59:03SPEAKER_01: And to be fair, almost every other being in the universe uh craves it, so if you have it, you can get something from them.
- 59:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's fair.
- 59:12SPEAKER_03: Even if it doesn't necessarily mean anything to you.
- 59:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, for them, it means getting souls.
- 59:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:18SPEAKER_01: But that's it.
- 59:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, again, this is all leading up to probably the last couple of episodes will be about the blood war.
- 59:26SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 59:27SPEAKER_01: Which is the fight between devils and demons.
- 59:30SPEAKER_02: That just sounds really fucking cool.
- 59:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 59:33SPEAKER_01: But for now, that uh that's it for devils.
- 59:37SPEAKER_01: We'll revisit them in the future when we get to the blood war.
- 59:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 59:41SPEAKER_03: Man.
- 59:42SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 59:43SPEAKER_03: Man, I I gotta be honest.
- 59:45SPEAKER_03: I did not like, okay, the I don't mean this bad.
- 59:50SPEAKER_03: Um, because I mean I find everything interesting, but I did not necessarily expect to find the lawful evil setup to be as interesting as it is.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: I personally find it more interesting than law than the lawful good setup.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because it's like home monitors.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_01: But I I don't hate lawful good, especially after doing the episode on lawful good.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_01: The lawful good creatures specifically, but um, it it was really interesting, and I want to keep going into a lot of stuff.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I think I think the idea of hell being a bureaucracy is hilarious to me.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_03: Because it's like, you know, it's hell.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_03: And and again, because I think what I mentioned uh last time about how I think for a lot of people, there's this kind of intrinsic association between chaos and evil and between good and law that you know our society kind of like that's I feel like that's how it's presented for a lot of people in modern society.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_03: So I think that to, you know, have the the very strong, you know, lawful, like it's lawful and it's evil, you know, together, you know, so like they and they stuck to it so much, I think that makes it really interesting to me.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_03: Because it's like it's hell, but it's a bureaucracy.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_03: It's not just like fire and brimstone, chaos, you know, little little devils floating around like flying around and poking people with pitchforks, you know, like it's a whole it's a whole thing.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_03: I love whole things.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_01: And I will say, having peeked already ahead at um the work that I'll have to do for demons, it's even the way it's written is demons are so much more chaotic.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_01: I'm really excited for you guys to see the differences.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_03: We haven't even covered demons.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_01: Fuck.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_03: There's so much, so much evil.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_03: So much evil in the world.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: Truly.

- 1:02:08SPEAKER_03: It's very different.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_03: It's just another bad downward place.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_02: Or is it upward?
